Speaking as someone who generally dislike tumblr/twitter's brand of social justice, it's actually really funny and not surprising to discover a lot of tumblr posts and memes that became viral on other websites as "proof" that "SJWs" are reverse nazis who want to kill all cishet white men turned out to actually be satire.

The way jimin presents is much more obviously queer than any other member (purely based on mannerisms, cause if you hear joon or yoongi talking about love for a few minutes you can put two and two together). And his overt queerness makes a lot of cis hetero shippers (or kpop fans ) uncomfortable because they're forced to confront their internalized homophobia and misogyny head on. So they find a way to diminish his importance to the other members or villanise to cartoonish levels to deal with that discomfort.
(I'm the anon you responded to with this^^)
Add onto that how a lot of ARMYs seem to assume that just being a BTS fan makes you an ally/intelligent/a good person, and it's the perfect scenario for some cognitive dissonance. Only that JM haters and Tkkers don't seem to have enough cognitive for it to be anything. Even (maybe especially, even) shipping two men doesn't automatically make you supportive of the queer community and understanding of the struggles just existing as a queer person brings about.
They always clamour "but two gay men wouldn't do xyz in a homophobic country", failing to recognise that queer people have existed through so much worse and still have done things wildly more gay than anything Jikook have done.
There's also a lot of them who only see JM's gender expression and "queer subtext" (meaning fashion choices, and the whole concept of his photofolio + album) while disregarding JK's. Like, that man pulled out the most feminine look and attitude in his "bobs+bangs" Calvin Klein shoot. And he fucking owned it. But instead, at least in my perception, the fandom is split on him: one half genuinely sees and appreciates JKs expression of himself, while the other mostly memes it to death and ridding it of meaning. Any perception of JK as a potentially non-hetero man is forgotten the moment he presents as classically masculine again, aka stereotyping the whole queer community to death.
The latter doesn't happen with JM, because - like you said - he fits the common perception of a gay man. Which is all fun and games for the many "The JM effect" compilations, but for cis shippers it starts sliding into homophobia the moment they need to stop perceiving the members as Ken Dolls and instead treat them as actual human beings with all their complexities, faults and incongruent behaviour.
Which brings me onto Hobi. Now, I don't think he gets it quite as bad as JM.
One reason being that there's simply not as many Yoonminers who aren't mainly tkkers. The latter often uses the former to not be seen as a JM anti, but aside from compilations getting spread to push the "married couple" agenda, they don't focus their attention on it. (Also can the "arguing a lot = being in love/married" thing plz die? As someone whose grandparents argue every 20 minutes (real numbers) it's the actual worst and not really a reflection of romance...)
Another one is that Yoonminers do not care about original content at all. From what I've seen during my baby army days, they pick and choose everything down to the tiniest detail. So they mostly ignore that Hobi even exists as a possible variable.
Which brings me to my next point, which kinda breaks my heart: I don't think a lot of shippers in general, and the tkk/ym crowd in particular, see Hoseok as someone to focus their attention on. He gets forgotten a LOT, relegated to the fun sidekick comic relief while the ships are the mc's. (Which is why, imho, it's always his releases a lot of the fandom doesn't care about/actively ignores). The actual deep founded love every single member of BTS has for him - to the point they should actually propose - is insane. How can you think Ym is more real than Sope or Jihope? How can people be that willfully obtuse?
As someone who thinks Jikook could be real (2019, I am looking at you), I had my doubts seeing Jihope interact a few times. But what gets me is how fucking whipped Hobi gets every time he watches Jikook be all adorable. He looks at them like the proud BFF who got them together. A lot of that is his general love for the maknae line and his personality, but that level? The instances of it happening?
...
.......
This was a lot. Okay.
Tl;dr: BTS are human beings, also Hoseok is the best person on the planet probably. Be gay, do crime🏳️‍🌈
Even (maybe especially, even) shipping two men doesn't automatically make you supportive of the queer community and understanding of the struggles just existing as a queer person brings about.
This!! Is so key to everything wrong with a large group of shippers and even solo fans. This idea that because you ship on m/m ship over the other, you are no way capable of making homophobic assumptions and statements. To a lot of shippers shipping a potentially queer couple is just another way to fulfill some forbidden romance fantasy of theirs and not actual concern for the lived reality of queer couples in conservative countries.
Which is why the painful torture of two boyfriends being torn apart from each other like star crossed lovers sounds more palatable and realistic to tkkrs than a queer couple deciding to stick by each other's side through thick and thin, despite the risks. It's less spicy I guess, but who cares of queer joy when the dramatics of the other possibility is so much more enticing.
Everytime I see tkkrs make the whole, "being gay in the military is forbidden so a gay couple would never risk going together" argument, a part of my soul dies. I don’t know what's more offensive, the idea that a closeted couple will just forget how to behave around each other after potentially years of being together because Gays and their crazy sex drives, am I right?
Or the alternative explanation that queer people in conservative countries just never make risky descions for the sake of their partners because the law forbids them from even existing.
Both explanations are tone deaf and ignorant of the lived reality of queer people. Its a direct result of straight people dominating shipper spaces. I do sometimes wonder what queer tkkr shippers make of these theories (cause I'm sure they exist as well). Are they perhaps more sane or do they subscribe to this bs as well ?
And oh my gosh yes about jungkook. That boy has very vocally played about with his gender expression and has been the one ignored the most by seriously cis heterosexual fans. This daddy Dom fantasy they project onto him is a bit much though I do think he does enjoy a more masculine cool image for himself as well. Which to the straight mind is confirmation for all their wattpad inspired fantasies of him. It's unfortunate but alas, stereotypes stick , especially those made by people with a very set view of the world.
As for hobi and the ynmner /sope dilemma, I totally get it. Ynmn shippers do tend to get on my nerves from time to time as well and it no doubt does have something to do with the correlation of them to the tkkr subgroup. I have grown fond of the ynmn dynamic since my baby army days I must admit though, because you can clearly see how much yoongi genuinely appreciates jimins presence and how jimin relies on yoongi for emotional comfort. It is sweet, but yeah I don't necessarily see anything else going on there.
Same goes for sope honestly. Nothing has ever made me seriously question them, except the sunshine bf with grumpy bf dynamic they do fit into very perfectly. They also clearly rely on each other for emotional support (Bring Hobi, hes my vitamin 🥺) but yeah Nothing as eye raising ig ? But yes, i can completely see why it's so frustrating to see how Hobi is dismissed within other shipping dynamics similar to the treatment j/m has gotten. Hobi does tend to get overlooked a lot in these bts dynamic discussions when he very much does embody the heart of the group and the members love for him is so heartfelt and grand, we really seriously underestimate his significance to keeping the bts spirit in line all these years.
I love my ball of sunshine who holds and even bottles up a lot emotionally for the sake of his fans and the team. And he always deserves more appreciation by everyone in the fandom (myself included)
Ps. Jihope in that one 2020 music bank live was definitely a 👀 moment lol.

Happy Blorbo Blurbsday!!
Do any of your character's names have a special meaning? If yes - who and what? If no - how then did you choose the names?
<3
CJ
So, most of my character names come out of random generation, but there are a few exception. Let's break it down by story.
The Archivist's Journal:
Almost all of the names in The Archivist's Journal I pulled from random dice roll tables in the back of the D&D sourcebook Xanathar's Guide To Everything. With three notable exceptions.
Pat: The friendly and nostalgic Village elder who's the first one to greet the Archivist upon washing up on the shore and repeatedly acts as a source of information and advice (albeit one fond of cryptic phrasing). His name was mostly a reference to the the book Life of Pi by Yann Martel, and its protagonist Piscine Molitor "Pi" Patel who at one point winds up on a rather strange island but who also might be phrasing the entire story as a metaphor and/or coping mechanism. There's probably also a little bit of a reference to Saint Patrick as a revered figure associated with an island.
Theo: Pat's far less cordial counterpart who's implied to be possibly immortal, or something close to it. His name's mostly a pun about the theoretical and theological implications of his existence and role in the world of the Village.
Vernon: I don't know, dude just felt like a "Vernon" to me.
Empty Names:
So, with the main cast, in my initial brainstorming document I had them listed as Characters A/B/C/D/E, and they were arranged by gender with A and E being cis but gender noncomforming, B and D being transmasc and transfemme respectively, and C being genderfluid. This is the sort of conceptual symmetry that pleases me. A became Ashan Glassheart, B became Sullivan Bridgewood, and E became Eris. C and D became Road and Lacuna respectively, breaking from that original letter association (although maybe if I ever decide on a last name for Lacuna it will start with a D).
Ashan and Sullivan's names ultimately came from https://www.fantasynamegenerators.com/, with some modification along the way. For Eris, I just started adding random syllables after the letter 'E' until something sounded good (the mythological reference was a happy accident, albeit one I embraced). Road and Lacuna's names were a bit more involved, and largely owe themselves to this post (that post also dictated which generator I used for Sullivan's name).
In trying to name Lacuna like a "22nd century cyberpunk hacker jewel thief" I remembered a word I'd been fond of ever since I first encountered it while reading Mervyn Peake's Titus Groan. It's a word that on one level just sounds really cool to me on a strictly phonetic sense, and on another level appeals to my fascination with absence/emptiness/void. I'd used it for one or two video game characters in the past and have always been on the lookout for a place to use it on a character for whom it would really fit, and I think found I finally found it with this Lacuna. Also, having named her a word meaning "an unfilled space or interval; a gap" was part of what led to the story as a whole being titled Empty Names. One part a play on Lacuna's name, and one part a reference to the linguistic philosophy/metaphysics concept of a proper name that refers to something or someone that doesn't exist. That concept in turn winds up referring in the story both to deadnames and to Road's ontological issues.
As for Road's name, that's partially a result of that previously-linked meme post about trans names commenting about non-binary names often being nouns, and partly a matter of them being a sort of spiritual successor to my oldest OC. That was a character that I'd been making up stories for since elementary or middle school (but never writing any of them down) whose thing was traveling from world to world, trying to do good, but most often by either providing additional support for the actual main character or by making some minor change that sets off a butterfly effect of consequences. They were originally a self-insert fanfic character but over time I started making up original stories just for them. Again, never wrote any of it down, just something to keep me occupied while daydreaming or trying to get to sleep that I continuously added to over time. And then in highschool I heard Greenday's Boulevard of Broken Dreams for the first time and that character suddenly had both a name and a framing device for how they got from world to world. Their name (more of a title really, not having a real name was a big part of their character) became The Walker (or just "Walker") and they traveled a seemingly infinite interdimensional highway, lined with bubbles that acted as portals to various worlds. While not the same character, Road inherited a lot of The Walker's characteristics and made the road that The Walker walked into their own name-that's-actually-just-a-convenient-alias-because-they-don't-have-a-real-Name-anymore.
The Melts:
Just a small one-off standalone story that I wrote for Halloween, but the name of the main character, Mil, has its roots in my personal life even further back than Road's.
When I was really young, I watched the movie Milo and Otis more times than I can remember. That's a movie about a kitten (Milo) and puppy (Otis) that grow up on a farm, become best friends, and then get lost and separated and grow up while trying to find their way back home and eachother. And then when my siblings and I finally talked our parents into getting us a cat, we wound up with an orange kitten that we named Milo, whom I also have a lot of nostalgia about, but anecdotes about him are a story for another time. Suffice to say, the name "Milo" and its feline association has stuck in my head for my entire life, resulting in several characters in RPGs getting named Milo (including my Guild Wars 2 charr) and an OC that was related to my oldest OC, The Walker (see the explanation on Road's name above).
Anyway, when I was coming up with the main POV character for The Melts I wanted it to be someone with biological augmentations that would be notable but not too weird. This led to the classic catgirl/catboy ears and tail; something that's just a little bit out there for a "normal" human being to have in our world, but would be considered boring and basic in that world. But I also wanted gender to be all over the place in that story, and so I made the POV character they/them nonbinary (again, simultaneously very slightly unusual in our world, but the most boring/basic/"normal" option that appears in that world story). So, the cat ears/tail led to me pulling "Milo" out as my archetypal catboy and then slicing the 'o' off of the end of the name to make it slightly more nonbinary by being less associated with a common-ish real-world masculine-gendered name.
The rest of the names in that story I left as placeholders until the entire story was written and then randomly pulled a bunch of names from babynames.com (with minor modifications) as I rushed to get the story posted in time for Halloween.

Heyho hello, I am Mia and I have finally accepted my fate! 🤪
After living in denial for the longest time, I have finally accepted the fact, that my random fandom sideblog has slowly but surely turned into my F1 RPF blog.
And because this is also where I promote my own writing, it might be time to actually introduce myself.
So here we go, I guess...
💫About Me💫
There's actually not very much to be said about me specifically.
I'm Mia (on the internet at least ;D) and I run this Tumblr account, thx byee :))
jk, here are some Tumblr-relevant facts about me:
🙆‍♀️ I'm a cis woman, going by she/her pronouns
💬 I speak English, German, French and a bit of Spanish (I don't tag posts language-specific, though)
⌛ I started my fandom journey on Wattpad and am now very happy to have deboarded that particular train for Tumblr xD
💻 I actually don't have any other social media, because I'm very susceptible to doom-scrolling (but I want memes, so I'm very thankful for Tumblr and my saviour the chronological dash lmao)
❤️ my offline hobbies include but are not limited to: reading, writing, singing, music, photography, knitting, Magic: The Gathering, nature (whatever that means)
📚 I am an indiscriminate enjoyer of all things written down, whether it be traditionally published books, comics or fanfiction
✏️ I wrote some fanfic in my teenage years, switched to poetry for a while, before coming back to long-form fandom writing
🏎️ I've always been really into motor sports of any kind, but kept it mostly offline and regional, F1 has only recently been added to the list and I am actually very surprised by how much I enjoy it (it also managed to get me over my almost decade long writers block so I think I will stay for a bit)
⁉️ Although I am an advocate for Don't like it, don't read it!, I recognize that sometimes it's not that easy. I myself have clear boundaries of what I am and am not comfortable seeing. Therefore, although I do post F1 on my main blog, I've decided to keep the rpf-side of things confined to this sideblog.
💌 I am always delighted to meet new people and make new friends, so if you want to chat, please don't hesitate to send me a DM or an ask!! <3333

My own two cents are organized like this:
✨ #mia screams into the void but in a different direction for original posts
✨ #mia throws writing into the void for my writing (can also be found on Ao3)
✨ #oh don't go breaking my heart for all the heart-break
✨ #wtf did i just witness for all the mind-break
✨ #oh…oh no for all things 'this is very funny but also wtf people'
✨️ #insane. the lot of them for 20 millionaires going vroom vroom in circles every second weekend being absolute menaces to society
✨️ #lights out and away we meme for...well...memes
✨️ #braking news and griddy rumours for newsies, silly season shenanigans and all other season-related stuff
✨️ #*write write write* for general fandom and writing related posts/memes
✨️ #artsy for anything art (drawings, writing, edits, gifs, ...)
✨️ #smiley (っ´ω`c)♡ for smiley people (mostly Max lol)
I might come up with some more things to differentiate between stuff.
If you have read this far I am very grateful! Thank you for giving me the time of day, I am so glad you exist! (also pls come and chat with me if you want) 🥰🥰

⚰. →  camila mendes   :  cis woman  :  she/her :   el paso by marty robbins  —  looks like feleena has been driven to mystic falls. the 21/170-year-old vampire is  known  for  being  vivacious on  a  good  day  and  flippant  on  a  bad  day .  now that you mention it, when i think of them i think of A CRAZY DREAMING RUNAWAY, DANCING & LAUGHTER, WICKED EYES THAT GET WHATEVER THEY WANT, and FALLING HARD AND FAST, FOREVER. lets hope they enjoy small town mystic falls, whilst they still can. ( michael ● 28 ● ctz ● he/him )
Currently: In Mystic Falls to mentor her newest sire, Lizzie Saltzman. "Renting" a large property on the edge of town, from where she routinely hosts crazy parties.
Born: 1864 Turned: 1885
Canon Change: For her origin, Marty tells it the best. But her tall and handsomely dressed cowboy was a vampire come to town. The man he felled in Rosa's Cantina was not with a shot — he had ripped out his throat. The cowboy had to flee, and despite her broken heart, Feleena knew there was no other choice. The morning he couldn't help but come back for her.. only to die in her arms with one final goodbye. Feleena couldn't bear the loss, and used his pistol to end her pain. After waking, in transition from the blood he used to heal her whenever he fed, she wreaked havoc on the men who shot her cowboy down. And with every man who knew of her demise gone, she simply returned to Rosa's the very next day.
Feleena made El Paso her own. There was nothing she didn't know, nor anything she couldn't do, and she stayed as long as she could. But her everlasting beauty became too hard to explain away, and she sought another home. Her next stop was New Orleans, where the many stories had carried across the plains, and she left West Texas — and Rosa's Cantina — in 1906. This kind of nomadic lifestyle carries on, and she finds herself in new, exciting places frequently. What once used to be decades quickly became a handful a years, and as her thirst for adventure grows, she has found herself even more mobile across the land.
Wanted Dynamics / Connections: She was in attendance at the the 1914 Christmas Party (the same Freya first met her family) and I'd love to have some NOLA connections with her! She spent longer in there, maybe 15-30 years, because she actually got to meet and interact with other vampires and would've absolutely been caught up in Marcel's war for control.
As for her wild-ridin' cowboy, I figure it can be swung either way. Was it hunters that gunned him down, or just the town avenging their friend? Is he REALLY dead, or is it more complicated than that? (There's a lovely sequel song to the whole ordeal, where it is implied the cowboy is resurrected and feels a connection to the town.) Feleena doesn't know for sure, she just assumes he must be dead. She didn't even know that his blood in her system would turn her.

hey king, during this lovely pride month I told my dad I'm not cis, im nonbinary. It went well yay! but I knew it would go well but I'm not sure he fully got what non-binary meant (tbf I could've done better with the explanation too but nerves I guess), do you know a nice meme or like a simple thing that would kinda explain it?
First off, congrats!! I'm glad the conversation went well 😊 I kind of found myself in the same boat with my parents when I came out as nonbinary and gave them a very quick rundown on what that meant for me. They were honest with me in that they may need a minute to fully grasp nonbinary as a concept, because at the time they'd literally never heard of it, but they've always been open to learning more since then and have asked genuine questions when they have them so everything has worked out. Hopefully that'll be the case with your dad too!
As far as simple ways to explain it to someone who isn't familiar with the concept, that can definitely be tough since nonbinary is an umbrella term that covers an incalculable number of different gender experiences, with the unifying idea just being that the experience is outside of the usually thought of male-female binary model. There have been memes about being nonbinary that I've seen made by other nb people that haven't vibed at all with the way I experience gender, and I'm sure that my own experience doesn't vibe for every single other nb person out there too.
For myself, both when I came out to my parents and my coworkers, I actually ended up leaning more on the historic facts side of things because that's always been how my brain best wraps itself around new concepts. Nonbinary genders have existed throughout recorded human history, across many different cultures all over the world, so the idea that the male and female binary model is the "one original and true" way of experiencing gender just isn't factually correct and apparently that actually was hugely enlightening for a number of my older coworkers.
Tumblr media
There have definitely been plenty of memes out there that try to break it down into a more simple concept for people trying to learn about what being nonbinary means, like the 2 below here
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but they may very well not fit the way that you experience being nonbinary so don't feel like you have to necessarily rely on explanations or memes made by other people that don't actually fit for you. There's plenty of time for your dad to learn and grow and it's gonna be a journey for both of you in a lot of ways! Like I know I've sometimes showed clips from shows to my parents when a nonbinary character or actor shows up because that sort of thing helps reinforce for them that their kid isn't alone out here in this experience, just as an example.
There was a post on here going around for a little while (and for the LIFE of me of course I can't find it now, or remember the op, so if anyone knows the post I'm talking about and could link it as a reply please do and I'll do the same if I come across it later!) where basically the op framed it as "if being male is being in California on a map of the US, and being female is being in NY, I'm somewhere off in <insert other location between those two here>" So that's also another kind of framing option for you if that sounds like it would fit your experience. Basically any format where you frame it as "rather than being stuck between 2 ill fitting options, being nb means there's tons of other options just like XYZ thing in our world already" can help, in my experience at least.
I hope some of this helps anon - I know it was probably a lot more rambling than you may have expected lmao, and again huge congrats on coming out and it's awesome that your dad is accepting and supportive right out the gate, even if he's still learning as he goes!

WOL as a Recruitable NPC (DA-Style)
I fell down an FFXIV blog rabbit hole and found this delightful meme by @vaniccio and wanted to do it despite the fact that I only played one DA game (Origins, which I didn’t actually finish, eheh.) and have barely any knowledge of the Tarot, aside from vague descriptions of the higher arcana.
Anyway, thank you stranger! This definitely helped me in my continuing quest to get my imagination warmed up in time for FFXIVwrite2022!

Tumblr media
Name: Falerin Arcita
Alternate Name or Alias?: None
Race & Job: Hyur Midlander BRD/SMN (for all intents and purposes)
Nickname: Fal
Default Tarot Card: The Tower
Do they have the Echo? If so, how did they discover it?: He does not, although he does have other unique talents.
How/where does the WoL meet them?: Unbeknownst to the WoL, they actually met him on the night of the Bloody Banquet in Ul’Dah, where he was a chamber musician at a pre-party. He was very taken with the WoL, and after the unfortunate events of that night, helped sabotage efforts to find them and ‘bring them to justice.’ He didn’t believe for a second that the WoL was capable of such a crime and helped engineer a sort of grassroots “no snitches” pact, particularly among the Ala Mhigan refugees, and various other folks that had been aided by the WoL.
How are they recruited into the Scions?:  Riol recruits him once the heat dies down after the banquet (sometime during HW) Officially, his abilities are information gathering and light espionage, and acting as a sort of self-appointed morale officer, keeping everyone’s spirits up with a nigh-endless supply of songs and stories. His arcane abilities (including a very unique and flexible aetherial familiar and the ability to use arcanima without a tome) also do not go unnoticed and probably clinched his membership in the eyes of the more studious Scions. This annoys him greatly as they are not what he wishes to be defined by.
Romanceable?: Yes (he’s a cis male and pansexual.)
Tumblr media
Where they are in the open world:
(As a Scion): The Seventh Heaven in Mor Dhona.
(As a NPC): Rotates between the bars/inns of the big 3 city-states.
Default saying:
(As a Scion): Hello there, friend! *smiles and does the  /welcome emote* Business or pleasure?
(As a NPC): We’ve met, haven’t we? I’d love to hear what you’ve been up to lately!
What do they typically do off-screen?: He’s usually out carousing at bars/performance venues or dropping in on friends unexpectedly (he curbs this to an extent if he becomes a Scion and will gladly go on information gathering/diplomacy missions... and combat missions as well, if its absolutely necessary.)
Things they Generally Approve of:
Sassing authority figures who abuse their power.
Aiding/protecting vulnerable people (particularly refugees)
Curiosity/an inquiring temperament.
Things they Generally Disapprove of:
Violence for its own sake.
Societies/governments that prioritize tradition/custom/tribalism over the happiness and well-being of people (any people.)
Pretentious/arrogant behavior.
Are they in a Grand Company? Which one?: He got his chocobo from the Order of the Twin Adder, but doesn’t swear fealty to them.
Friends:
Within the Scions:  Thancred (he just knows there’s a bon vivant under that dadly exterior just dying to get out again), F’lhaminn (she lost a Hyuran child, he lost a Miqo’te mother, they comfort each other) Hoary Boulder (Gods know the Scions need more cheerful folk like him) Tataru (Most underrated Scion.)  (He’d make it his business to befriend everyone else too though...)
Outside the Scions: Momodi (he enjoys trading lusty stories with her,)Tiamat (its a long story) Guydelot (fellow spoony, probably-not-heterosexual bard) Methuli (he makes and delivers leather to the Ehcatl Nine and they enjoy teasing each other.) A few of my friends’ PCs.
Small side mission:
When the WoL gains access to Sharlayan, they will be surprised to find Fal in the studium library, reading up on arcanima. If pressed about it, he’ll eventually reveal that he’s trying to find something he can talk about with his estranged-until-quite-recently father, who is a scholar living in Idyllshire. *insert some dialogue trees and travel back to Idyllshire here followed by more dialogue trees*
Ultimately it turns out Fal’s father has no desire to relate to his son in a loving parental fashion, and the reconciliation ultimately fails no matter what the WoL does. Fal acknowledges that he never thought it would work anyway, and loves (platonically or otherwise) the WoL all the more for trying.
The reward for this quest is a broken ruby statuette of a bee that considerably boosts Fal’s magical abilities.
Potential tarot card changes:
If accepted into the Scions:  The Sun
If romanced by the WoL:  The Magician
If not recruited/kept as an adventurer:  The Hermit
Might as well tag some folks?  @captainkurosolaire, @lettersnorth, @nutley-rp and @kich-rp?

Note
thanks for the eloquent humanities-STEM posts. i also saw The Post and couldn’t quite word why it ground my gears so much. having thought more it also bothers me how it conflates so many things. misogyny in STEM spaces is not a product of not taking humanities courses (???) and the anecdote recounted ironically happens to be a scenario i’ve encountered amongst philosophy majors too (sexism and all!), but as you said, my anecdote is also not data. the conflation of breaking down a hypothetical scenario for the hell of it with thinking that those hypothetical actions are practically okay is also weird. also like, minorities in stem exist. and i don’t know how they would defend their implied tenet of “you need to study concepts in college to Get Them” if it was presented to them outside of this particular argument. i hope this message was okay to send!
Appreciate you thinking it's eloquent :) (I assume you mean the expanded version and not the original; the original was an ineloquent expression of frustration that clearly missed some nuances going by the responses it's garnered and I probably wouldn't have left my clarifications in the tags + reblog if I'd known it would spread).
I do find it a bit ironic how much tumblr loves the "I don't know how to explain to you why you should care about people" meme then spreads a post implictly claiming humanities lecturers do know how to do that. (Funnily enough the original meme frustrates me too because it may be true but I am really not a fan of the concept of there being important things you either Get or Don't regardless of explanation offered; however me not being a fan of it doesn't change it. Still. Ironic.)
"I don't know how they would defend their implicit tenet of "you need to study concepts in college to Get Them" outside of this context" - yeah. That post is pretty clearly founded in a world where college is a basic level of essential education that everyone can be assumed to get, and not a place you go to deepen your understanding of a particular topic you decided you want to know to a level of specialisation beyond what the average person should ever need in their lives. And there is a place in the world for specialised ethicists; any engineering project shouldn't be one person working alone anyway, and it's probably good to have someone there trained to catch social issues others wouldn't - but that's on a "there's a subtle incentive problem/bias problem your proposal would create that you probably haven't seen" level not a "your proposal shouldn't be murder" level, you don't need training for the second. Specialised ethicists on engineering teams should really have a firm grounding in the engineering component too though so you don't get "this ai answered leading questions with the kind of philosophical ideas it found in text we fed it; clearly it's sentient and mistreated".
On sexism, tbh I can absolutely buy that stem classes are more sexist, not because they aren't taught not to be but because the gender ratio at least on the maths side of things is just ridiculously skewed, and a mostly-cis-male environment will probably be misogynistic. (Though my current course actually somehow has an almost even gender ratio - that's a far out exception though, never seen it before except at events deliberately angled at getting women into maths).
Anyway yes, of course this was OK to send, thank you for the ask.

I'm very confused on the Lindsay Ellis thing. What happened?
here’s my summary. i don’t wanna go digging for sources but they’re out there.
TL;DR:
lindsay makes a tweet about two properties starring asian characters
she gets criticized for allegedly narrow-minded racist implications
she doubles down and insults her critics before deleting her twitter
everybody gets so rabid trying to memeify her “cancelling” and dig up old dirt to mock that it overshadows the point of the original criticism
she responds to this with a 100-minute monetized video about her harassment and cancel culture that apologizes for some stuff but not all of it
her fans are insisting everybody should watch the video before getting mad at her
her critics obviously don’t want to watch the whole video
and i guess we just can’t have a productive conversation about casual racism in online leftist communities that isn’t centered around a popular white leftist’s feelings about getting called out.
longer explanation:
lindsay made a tweet comparing raya and the lost dragon to avatar the last airbender. she was trying to broadly refer to how ATLA affected fantasy media in general, but asian people criticized her because they were annoyed seeing media starring asian characters constantly compared to ATLA (one did a thread on it) and eventually everybody else followed suit. this on its own wasn't really a major issue (and decent arguments followed that ATLA and raya share massive similarities) but the fallout seems to be the real kicker.
lindsay responded with a thread that was more defensive than anything, throwing around phrases along the lines of “maybe you can see this as racist if you squint” and “i wasn’t saying what you thought i was saying, ya crazies” (she did use “ya crazies” to describe her detractors). that got more people angry, especially because of the connotations of “squint” in the context of anti-asian racism. personally, i think focusing on the “squint” thing is a bit irrelevant compared to her overall defensive tone and the fact she spent more energy explaining her perspective as a white woman than having a legitimate conversation with the asian people who criticized her thread, but i’m also a white woman so i’m not gonna judge people who found it offensive.
eventually lindsay just nukes her twitter, leaving everybody conflicted. a lot of what i saw was legitimate criticism on “left twitter” prioritizing white voices and not taking criticism from marginalized voices. however, some people took to memeing the situation, turning her into a strawman who just compares every asian thing to avatar. others took the opportunity to harass her though personally i didn’t see any of that - just people clowning on her on their own accounts.
during this time, more dirt on lindsay comes out. some of it is fairly recent, like her tweet wondering if there’s slave/slaveowner fanfiction based on the harriet tubman movie, which was intended as a joke critical of fandom, but came across as if she wanted to read that kind of fanfic. i brought up something iffy she said this past october that got on my nerves but got overlooked - namely that she claimed that, in her experience, trans men were more privileged than cis women, which i felt was very narrow-minded and dismissive of transphobia against trans men, even from somebody who tries to be a trans ally. another issue was a biphobic comment about mara wilson despite lindsay being bisexual herself, and a reported incident where lindsay brushed off her friend, a black woman, who was abused by one of their other friends.
unfortunately, this became less “let’s discuss why lindsay is so bad at taking criticism and seeing outside her own perspective” and derailed into “let’s dig up shit from 12 years ago that doesn’t reflect her current image and which she’s already removed and apologized for several times” - most infamously her “rape rap” from, like, 2009. i saw somebody make a whole twitter thread just listing everything bad she’s done, with little context on when and what it exactly was. there were also some people implying she’s just as bad as her abusive employers at channel awesome or implies that she got all this bad shit from them, which is not only unfair to her, but also absolves her of the autonomy to exist outside of her male employers.
lindsay eventually made a video about the “cancelling” situation. i haven’t watched it, but it’s 100 minutes long, apparently monetized, and apparently it’s not really an “apology” video so much as a general video on twitter culture. she does address many major issues, apologizing for some but not others, and there are apparently intimate details, including responses to the “rape rap” explaining how her own trauma from rape played into that. but naturally, people are annoyed that her response to criticism is something that would take an hour and a half to watch, is catered towards her fanbase, isn’t even an apology so much as another defense of what she was trying to say, and makes her money. her attitude seems to be “i don’t need to cater to my critics,” which would be fine if she didn’t seem to be under the impression that everybody who criticized her was an overzealous white guy trying to bring her down, as if there’s not marginalized leftists speaking up who feel alienated by their community.

Hispanic TV Shows Recs (with poc/queer rep)
I’ve decided on doing a post about the most known tv shows in Spanish and I am focusing on shows with POC and queer representation because I am POC and queer, no other reason. Enjoy!
La Casa de las Flores: A rich Mexican family discovers that the patriarch has a hidden life and a hidden family. Very entertaining series and has queer and trans characters (although the trans woman is played by a cis man, which I find... questionable, but I find the whole thing very respectful, talks a lot about transphobia and homophobia in my cis opinion), which is surprising for a series made in such a conservative country. Definitely recommend! Has been the origin material of many Mexican memes. Link to trailer
Juana Inés: Mexican miniseries about Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, from when she was a young teen until her death. Very dark academia, gorgeous cinematography and very accurate from what I could tell. Really really recommend! Link to trailer
La Casa de Papel: I haven’t watched this one but everyone I know who has is obsessed with it. It’s an heist Spanish tv series, and has good queer and POC rep. Link to trailer
Club de cuervos: This was Netflix’s first Hispanic original series. Has very famous Mexican actors and it’s about two siblings trying to take control of their father’s sports team. Link to trailer
Elite: A Spanish series about a private school called “Las Encinas” that welcomes three students from the working class. I’d describe this as the Spanish Riverdale, lots of teen drama, lots of sex and tension between students. Also has murder and investigations. Not my cup of tea but might be yours! Link to trailer
Desenfrenadas: A coming of age story about a group of four young adults that go on a roadtrip in Mexico. Good story, amazing cast, very good musical choices, original! Link to trailer
Las chicas del cable: Set in 1928 in Madrid, Spain. Four women have just been hired in a new telecommunications company. Definitely a character-focused story, but I really dig it. Has a wlw couple and strong female characters! Link to trailer
El ministerio del tiempo: The premise of this show is INSANE. A secret Spanish government organization that only very few people know about which purpose is to prevent that time travelers change the present time. I haven’t watched it either but it’s next on my To Watch list. Link to trailer
Merlí: This is a series that follows the format of “Literature/Philosophy professor challenges their students’ view of their world through knowledge”, very similar to Dead Poets Society. You will learn a lot about different philosophers! (Addition by @lookingat-the-moon: Merlí is a Catalan TV show. The OG is in Catalan and then they translated it into Spanish. After Merlí you can also watch “Merlí: Sapere Aude” that it’s like a continuation of the story) Link to trailer
La jauría: This Chilean series just came out this year and follows an all-male group that is called “La Jauría” that assault female students from a catholic school, and the investigation that follows to take them down. Very empowering and with feminist values. Could be potentially triggering but if you like crime shows this might be right up your alley. Link to trailer.
Hernán: This series is about the Spanish colonization that happened in the 15th century in American territories. I haven’t watched it because it pisses me off that the focus is on the colonizer and the event still hurts even six centuries later but I’ve heard is good! I consider it important to watch historical series about very rarely touched issues and it was extremely researched. It is still mixed people talking about indigenous people’s history but I haven’t watched it and cannot emit an opinion. Link to first episode
La Rosa de Guadalupe: I guess I don’t have to tell you what this series is about. You know, I know you know but I’ll do it anyway. Just pure madness, the craziest situations about teen pregnancy, kidnappings, anime-loving teens, predators, addictions, just everything, but manages to be funny as hell because the acting is so incredibly bad. Link to the funniest and most memeable thing you’ll ever see.
Mi marido tiene más familia: A Mexican telenovela that made news because it was the first widely distributed series with a gay teen couple. Link to all episodes
Amar a muerte: Also a Mexican telenovela, also with a homosexual relationship, but this time is between two young women, Juliana and Valentina. I think they’re making a spin-off series based only on them?? Link to trailer and the trailer of Juliantina
El chavo del ocho: Probably the most iconic children show in Mexico’s history. It started being televised in 1973 and it’s a situational comedy about a homeless child that lives in a neighborhood helped by his friends, and the funny situations he somehow gets himself in. Has had incredible impact to Mexican pop-culture. Very charming characters. Full episodes can be found on Youtube! Link to playlist
Here’s my ko-fi if you wanna compensate me for the time and effort I put into my blog!

Tumblr media
The male-centered progressive left has successfully made woman-hating trendy.
Today, yet another “Karen” video went viral online. This time, it seems a woman flipped off a male driver, one Karlos Dillard, who then followed her home and filmed her as she melted down into hysterics, posting the video online, which included her home address and license plate. Over eight million views later (sure to be more by the time you read this), and Dillard is selling t-shirts based on the incident.
It seems this is a hobby for Dillard, who has posted other similarly antagonistic videos, accusing women of “racism” (despite no evidence of racism) in an attempt turn Karen virality into profit. Other t-shirts for sale on his Instagram profile include one with the words, “Karen… Are you OK?” and another reading, “Keep that same energy, Karen.”
The Karen meme has been misogynist from the getgo, originating from an anonymous male Reddit user, Fuck_You_Karen, who was angry at his ex-wife, named Karen, for taking custody of his children. In 2017, his misogynist rants became a subreddit, r/FuckYouKaren.
Recently, the meaning of “Karen” was said to refer specifically to middle class, middle aged white women who are so entitled they ask to speak to the manager when perturbed, but has since morphed into a specifically racist white woman, who “weaponizes” white, female fragility against largely black men. This connects to sexist tropes that claim women use their emotions, vulnerability, and tears to manipulate men.
What began as a joke has become more than that, and has moved into explicitly misogynist (and, in my opinion, dangerous) territory.
“Becky,” which originated as a means to refer to basic white women — the Uggs-wearing, Starbucks-buying, pumpkin spice-loving kind — probably young, probably blonde, probably not working class. Like “Karen,” I never found this to be particularly offensive, as I had little desire to defend boring people who love Starbucks, but what was once a joke has become something much more egregious.Following someone to their home, doxxing, filming, and harassing them because they gave you the finger is unhinged. People are going to act like assholes in this world, and you need to learn to deal with that. Moreover, these viral videos, like the Amy Cooper/Christian Cooper bird watching/dog-off-the-leash incident, are always decontextualized. No one really knows what happened preceding the video, nor do they know why either party reacted as they did. We all know social media leaves little room for nuance, and far too many people enjoy a rage reaction over asking questions or considering they may not know the full story. The truth is that, today, people’s lives can be destroyed in an instant, via a viral post. And our culture is wielding that power with very little care.
While those participating in the mobs targeting the subjects of these currently popular Karen videos claim some form of racial justice, this is not an accurate representation.
This has little to do with race, and everything to do with a progressive left that has adopted woman-hating as political virtue signalling.
Tumblr media
Last week, journalist and editor Jonathan Kay tweeted a “Wanted” poster he’d come across in Toronto, depicting a young, blonde, white woman. The text below her face mocked her as a “Basic Bitch” — privileged, entitled, and unwoke. The image and text presents “Becky” as dangerous — the new enemy. The A.C.A.B. (All Cops Are Bastards) logo on the poster implies it likely was produced and distributed by young anarchist men. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they were white men, considering the face of groups (or non-groups, depending on who you ask) like Antifa.
The trend of presenting women as a threat extends beyond Becky and Karen. In recent years, Antifa, anarchists, trans activists, and leftists have targeted feminists who question the impact of gender identity ideology on women’s rights as dangerous — even more so than male predators. Rhetoric that claims “TERFs kill” intentionally erases the fact that it is men who are overwhelmingly responsible for violence against both women and men (including trans-identified males). As a result, reversing this claim to say “Kill TERFs” or to show up at events discussing gender identity with cardboard guillotines with the words “TERFs and SWERFs step right up” written on them has become an acceptable form of “activism.”
This has all happened within a left that has consistently ignored and even defended the misogyny, racism, and violence of prostitution and pornography, painting women who fight the sex trade as “whorephobic” and as causing harm to “sex workers.” Everyone knows who is responsible for the abuse that happens to women in porn and prostitution. We can see it on PornHub or we can read about it in the news. Yet the left consistently fails to hold those men accountable for the harm they cause. No, no. The real problem is women. Terms like “TERF” (which means “trans exclusionary radical feminist,” but, in practice, is used to smear anyone who questions gender identity legislation or ideology) and “SWERF” (which means “sex worker exclusionary radical feminist,” but is used to smear women — even women who have worked in the sex trade — who wish to stop the universal violence and exploitation inherent to prostitution) exist to misrepresent, vilify, and end conversation. One cannot defend a “TERF” or “SWERF” any more than one can defend a “Karen” or “Becky,” unless they would like to be pilloried as unwoke and bigoted themselves.
A few years ago, trans activists and their progressive allies adopted the term “cis” to refer to those whose “gender identity matches their sex.” Putting aside the fact that no one’s “gender identity” matches their sex, as whether or not a person is male or female has nothing to do with whether or not they identify with a list of sexist gender stereotypes, the term “cis” is said to denote “privilege.” This means that a woman who understands she is female is, as per trans ideology, “privileged” over a man who desires to be viewed as a woman or who does not feel connected to masculine stereotypes. This is ridiculous, of course, as women are impacted by sexism on account of being born female, and are vulnerable to male violence regardless of how they identify. Understanding one is female does not make a woman “privileged,” it makes her a sane human being. In other words, “cis” or “cisprivilege” completely erases the reality of sexism and male violence against women. Suddenly, we are to believe women pose a threat to males who identify as transgender. Just as we are now to believe “Becky” and “Karen” are so dangerous they deserve to be hated, harassed, and destroyed. Maybe punched. Maybe worse.
This is, I’m afraid, woman-hating. And it is dangerous. The popularity of the Karen meme has led people to seek out and invent Karens in order to gain followers and profit, as evidenced by Dillard’s racket. And rhetoric that positions feminists as dangerous, harmful “TERFs” has led to the acceptance of open violent threats against women, simply for speaking out in defence of women’s rights and spaces. Karen, Becky, SWERF, and TERF are nothing more than excuses to hate women. And I am tired of people participating and defending this misogyny simply because it is on trend, and because it results in applause from the male centred left.
Yes, women can be assholes. Yes, women can be racist. No, women are not all innocent victims. But this has become about much more than calling out annoying, racist, or entitled behaviour. And, in fact, I think it was always about more than that. Let’s stop this before someone gets (literally) hurt.

Ok please if you don’t mind saying - who is Stuart semple and what did he do? I’m so confused. Like I recognise the name and I think he might the an artist or something but I have no idea
He is indeed an artist! He’s a English multidisciplinary fine artist best known for his ongoing beef with English sculptor Anish Kapoor over the 2016 exclusive licensing on the process to make Vantablack colour coating, which meant Kapoor was the only artist allowed to use it. Then Stuart Semple made Pinkest Pink pigment and said it was available to everyone but Anish Kapoor, and there was a big blowup which there’s a lot of documentation of - it was very memed.
Since then, Semple has made a bunch more pigments, most of them with the available-to-everyone-but-Anish-Kapoor disclaimer, and the beef periodically flares up, although I will say as time goes on it seems to me to have got increasingly one-sided given that Kapoor has pretty much wandered off.
(I’ve used several of his colours, btw. Pinkest Pink is pretty good. Blackest Black, his attempt to make the blackest possible paint (as opposed to Vantablack which is a nanofibre coating) I was pretty disappointed in, I’ve honestly had better light capture from mid-range art shop paints. His other pigments vary in quality - some I really liked, some I was meh on, but I think Blackest Black is the only one I was actively unimpressed by)
Anyway. Where I come in is much less exciting.
A few months ago I reblogged a post on Tumblr asking about Semple from a discourse tag (my reblog did not tag or @ anyone), and I made a glib comment where I said (very truthfully) that while I thought he was pretty decent at pigments, both his paintings and his online persona came across pretty adolescent to me.
so it turns out Stuart Semple is an inveterate name searcher (hi Stuart if you’re reading this!)
(Side note: I actually should have guessed this from 2019 Twitter when he saw and commented on an untagged thread I wrote about him and Kapoor’s beef (which was because I’d seen an article in which Kapoor, a British-Asian man, said that the racist Prevent strategy was liable to drive young British-Asian men into the arms of terrorist groups by making it clear their country hates them reblogged on Semple’s account with a caption claiming Anish Kapoor was pro-terrorism, which, while tongue-in-cheek, isn’t a neutral statement for a white person to make about an Asian person and was a pretty phenomenally bad-faith reading of Kapoor’s actual words) and in my thread I pretty much said that when the story had broken, I, like everybody else, had found it very funny and been firmly on side with Semple’s bit, but I felt that a) after a couple of years it really wasn’t very relevant any more and it had started to feel less like Fighting The Power and more like bullying the amount of Semple’s web presence was devoted to talking about Anish Kapoor; b) that it was a shame that Anish Kapoor was increasingly only known as The Vantablack Guy given that I really like a lot of his work and c) that continuing to frame a Jewish person of colour as the Face of the Artistic Elite was a bit weird given how overwhelmingly white the high-end art world is. but I digress. Semple responded to that thread, I don’t really remember what he said, it wasn’t an acrimonious response but it was a bit Oh I Didn’t Do Anything To Tag You?)
so anyway he found my reblog and commented saying ehhh I don’t remember, something along the lines of not feeling like I was being very kind and that he was trying his best. also I think he said I had accused him of being racist? which again the actual Tumblr post literally just said I thought his art and persona came across as juvenile and I think in the tags? I mentioned that I thought it was time for him to step off the Kapoor beef.
then he screencapped my post, including my profile picture and username, and posted it on all his socials with a kind of :( people are so mean on Tumblr :( caption and um
idk if you know this about Being A Public Persona With Tens Of Thousands of Followers but. if you post someone’s identity and say ‘I do not like what this person is doing’ it. can get messy fast.
uh I don’t follow Stuart Semple (see the original post I made) but he commented to make sure I knew he’d posted my post on Instagram and “all my followers like your wig :)” which. according to my partner who did go and look at the time, the Instagram comments were largely about how I was an ugly non-passing trans woman aka “man in a wig” which. throw the whole suitcase out. There were a good few days where I got a lot of angry anons, ranging from ‘stop bullying Stuart Semple!!!!!’ to ‘die in a ditch graphically’ to ‘how can you claim to have opinions on art when You Are On Tumblr’ (I have been a freelance illustrator for 7 years and I have a Masters in art and design) to ‘your art sucks and you’re fat and ugly’ and my personal favourite ‘how can u be cis and use she/her pronouns you dumb snowflake’
(within that furore was a whole branch where someone was like ‘sex worker huh bet you’re bad at it’ and I was like ‘yep! that’s why I don’t do it any more! it’s hard work and it involves a lot of self-promotion and customer skills which I don’t like and am not good at!’ and this was a Whole Thing where they kept trying to insult me (much like today’s anon) about my supposed failures as a Slut Who Is Bad At Sex and I kept going like ‘ok but here’s how that just. doesn’t make sense in reference to what sex work actually is so like, ok?’)
and Stuart Semple and I were also having a conversation which, depending on your perspective I would call his attitude either conciliatory or passive-aggressive, there was a lot of ‘me and my followers would never say rude things about you :) keep up the art kiddo :)’ and being charitable I would say he was trying to be nice while being angry, and to avoid escalating (but with the added context I got later about the wig comment, I think that interpretation of his behaviour maybe. has some cracks?) and ultimately he took down the posts, we had a brief conversation about keeping pet reptiles (apparently he has a lizard) and we left it on, if not good terms, at least peaceable ones.
however I still periodically get messages about it from angry Semple stans. and I’m not sure the argument was resolved, in that I still very much think it’s fair to make criticism, including quite harsh criticism (which I’m not sure ‘adolescent’ is), on art which is put out for public display and enjoyment, and that it isn’t a personal attack to post a criticism of someone’s public-facing work and statements on social media unless you actively target it towards them (for example, @ ing them), and Semple still thinks there’s no difference between a random blog with under a thousand followers criticising a public figure’s work and a public figure with 100k followers on most platforms criticising that blog (out of context - he clipped out the post I was reblogging from and my explanatory tags, and looking at my blog you may notice that 90% of my nuance is in the tags) while giving his followers all the information to find said blog.
(also as multiple people have remarked. if you want to say it’s an unfair criticism to call your online presence immature, being a middle-aged artist who as far as I can tell has a net worth over a million who spends your time name searching yourself in order to get mad at untagged mild criticism from strangers on the internet and share it on all your socials for your followers to join you in Being Big Mad is uhhhhhhh. it uh. it’s not like. not super thin-skinned and immature)
(also also I just googled his net worth and unsurprisingly I can’t find a source on it I’d consider reliable, but I did find multiple articles about him getting in trouble for breach of contract and nonpayment for gallery employees, including two accusations of him writing a big defensive blog post then changing it after a few hours to a very short post saying I LOVE YOU so like idk how true that is but it does seem. consistent with the above interactions.)

qibli!! for the send a char
for this meme!
Sexuality Headcanon: bi definitely Gender Headcanon: it is with a heavy heart that i say i think he is cis. but like gender non conforming about it A ship I have with said character: i think qibli/winter is fine. idk if i just think im obligated to ship it or not. i dont even like qinter that much or winter but its like, two guys and im so fucking hungry for rep. again i dont think relationships born from trauma are really great but i feel like after everythings said and done they should be happy together because they deserve it. but like, theyre both so emotionally stunted that my original thought that theyd improve each other doesnt really hash out. i dont even really like peppy/broody as foundation for a relationship. i think non canon there are a lot of fun romantic intepretations of them though. i like the sun/moon imagery! i know its more accurate to label nightwings as moon aligned, but winters white. i also think that probably qibli and winter have too much beef about like, everything, like the monarchy or how they treat their friends. yknow what i just realized i spent this entire paragraph talking about how much i dont actually like qinter but ship it anyways because im a desperate little fruit A BROTP I have with said character: i like it when qibli is friends with turtle and there should be more qibli and turtle friend momence. i think both of them are kind and observant to their friends but inclined towards unrealistic expectations, but both also not observant inwardly and outwardly level headed, leaving them in a good combination where theyre both looking out for each other where they wont take care of themselves. i also think he should hang out with sunny more A NOTP I have with said character: qibli and moonwatcher. sorry. i know theyre like “canon” or whatever but every relationship tui makes it so bland and boring. i think qiblis really unfair to have been afraid of moon in book 6 and then immediately rebound into wanting to take advantage of her power within like 5 pages; i think itd be way more cool if he was more excited about it, considering that he never felt afraid of turtle when he found out about turtles power and the immediate rebound is just inconsistent and makes him look flaky instead of understandable. i also just am not super excited to read about romance between horrifically emotionall damaged 4 yr olds who really never get better. its fine its not like i dont see it its just.. theres so little there. its not like theres negative-qibliwatcher points but i just see nothing for it. A random headcanon: i want. catholic qibli. LIKE I MEAN a qibli who disagrees with Bad Behavior like swearing and drinking and gambling and abides by morality really hard. i think itd be funny. its not even really accurate but i think if inexplicably qibli insisted upon proper behavior itd be funny because i like it. General Opinion over said character: i actually dont like him that much. hes fruity i guess, but more jockish in canon than people represent him in their fan interpretations at least at first, everyone always turns him into this slick suave and soft bubbly sort of guy when hes more rough and tumble, which i think is neat but i dont really like. and ofc tui likes her fan interpretations so he ends up getting watered down into some mischief maker joker by the end of the series where i preferred him as a good example of being raised in a rough childhood but ending up on top and being charismatic but distant from it. and i dont really like the softboy intepretation a lot of people take with him because i like canon, and it kinda spits in the face of the original idea of him being put together. like ive said before i hated cracking darkness of dragons open and its just qibli going “WAAA WAAAAA” . i think i need to reread arc 2 though

spencer was a very loved, very planned, very wanted baby, so as far as traditional “family drama” went, he had none. he and his younger sister have always gotten along well, his parents are still together and very much in love, and have always supported their children and their paths in life no matter what. they were an upper middle class family, with enough to have their needs met and most of their wants, but not enough to spoil themselves. it was very picturesque, and spencer didn’t realize how well adjusted he was until he got to college.
a lifelong band geek and first chair trumpet player with enough dorky charm to start a high school glee club without being creepy about it, it was no surprise that spencer decided to go to school for music education. ohio state university was far from home and not necessarily where he wanted to end up (who wants to end up in ohio for the rest of their lives, really) but they’d offered him a hefty scholarship and had one of the best marching bands around, so he couldn’t turn it down.
the hitch in the plan came in his sophomore year of high school, when america’s next top model decided to add guys to their roster. spencer knew nothing of modeling and had no desire to enter the industry, but after losing a dare to his frat brothers, he ended up submitting a casting video. he may or may not still have been tipsy while filming it, but he was pretty and tall and charming, so he somehow made it through to the filmed audition episodes. he made a distinct impression on the judges despite not having a great walk (miss jay, he found out later, was jumping at the chance to work his magic) and lo and behold, spencer made the top 14.
for the first few weeks, spencer mostly stayed in the background of episodes, watching the drama unfold. sure, a lot of it had been staged, but seeing how well his competitors could fall into place scared him a little (a picture of him clutching a pillow and staring at a catfight has since been turned into a viral meme). he expected to get eliminated early on, but found himself floating near the middle of the pack from week to week instead of at the bottom. the only time he seemed to stand out was the week of a late shoot, where he hadn’t told the crew about his diabetes and passed out on set after not eating for too long. (it’s still one of the most “omg moments” in top model history.)
and then the time for commercials came, and spencer’s star really started to shine. for all the things he wasn’t as polished on as the other contestants, nobody could compete with his natural charm. things started coming together for him after that, and he cracked the top four before getting sent home. still, he’d set into motion something he could never have accounted for, and suddenly everybody wanted a piece of spencer novak.
as soon as the season was done airing, spencer’s phone would not stop ringing. agents and managers and publicists, oh my!! a dare from his frat brothers had opened up a whole new world of possibilities for him, and suddenly he had a choice to make: would he continue with his plan of being a high school band director, or take the once in a lifetime opportunity of seeing where an acting career could take him?
the acting career went as most do for realty show stars. he had a staring role on a show that got cancelled after a season (too many teen dramas had saturated the market), and it seemed that all anybody wanted him to do was take his shirt off. sure, he’d packed on some muscle since being a lanky high school band geek, but it just wasn’t him. while filming another teen movie in irving (yes, he played a mermaid and yes, he was very excited about the part), he fell in love with the town. he’d never considered himself a beach guy before, but irving had convinced him. after filming ended, he decided to go back to the original plan, finished his degree and teaching certification in north carolina, and got a job at the local high school. his agent is still hounding about coming back, but he’s made his choice and he’s content with it. if you’re missing seeing him on film, though, you can still catch him on #hotteachertiktok.
