Name: Podoboo

Debut: Super Mario Bros.

Before I start this post, I’d like to clear something up. Podoboo? Yes, Podoboo! I’m well aware these enemies are often called Lava Bubbles and that’s the name Nintendo has been trying to make standardised these days, but you know what? You can’t make me! Podoboo is a lot cuter, plus its the name I grew up with and changes in society scare me and cause me to lash out! Maybe Lava Bubble is closer to the Japanese name of just “Bubble”, but since when has that been a factor in any of the localised names? Do you really want to refer as Lakitu as “Jugemu”, huh? I’ll have you know one of my civil rights as a citizen of Wet Dry World is to refer to Mario enemies with whichever official name I please. Like it or leave it!

So this is a post about Podoboo. Do you like Podoboo? I certainly Podo-do! They are perhaps the most generic design you could give to a Mario enemy, a visibly Dangerous Thing with two eyes, but they have always charmed me! It’s the little things, like their distinct shape and the fact their pupils are somewhat wider than most obstacles like this. They bring me comfort in dire times. No matter what happens, I know Podoboo will be there, jumping at a set height in a particular spot of lava! Without them I would be nothing!

So simple is their design, isn’t it weird to think they started off as even simpler? The Podoboos in the first SMB game are completely blind, and with no eyes they may as well not be creatures at all! Of course, I’m very glad they are creatures, and their iconic behaviour was there from the start! They love to jump, of course! There is nothing they would rather be doing!

Awaken! As of Super Mario World, they have been gifted sight and are no longer blind to the sins of this world! Hurray! What do you think they see as they jump up and down? I’m surprised it doesn’t make them dizzy!

You’ll be glad to hear Podoboos have had an expansive career ever since, now with their new trademark eyes! After all, they are THE lava enemy! Anywhere you’ve got that tasty hot fire juice, these guys are soon to follow! Here they are in Super Mario RPG, called Sparkies here because they couldn’t make up their minds on a localized name and probably because they confused them with Li’l Sparkies. In Yoshi’s Story they even called them Spark Spooks! Geez, I’ll even take the name Lava Bubble over this! But doesn’t this render look nice and juicy?

Though any great career has its flops, and I have to say... I am usually the first to campaign for the unique designs from the first three Paper Marios, but I do not really like this Lava Bubble! This takes away from their distinct Mario-y charm and makes them look like a Fire Enemy you could find in any other game! Though in the RPGs they are able to float around without needing any lava, the ones in Super Paper Mario act just like the platformer ones, jumping around despite not looking like they should be doing that! Ok!

The Podoboo from New Super Mario Bros. DS just wasn’t trying very hard at all. Come on! They could’ve it a bit more justice than this!

Ah, there we go! The Podoboos in New Super Mario Bros. Wii decided to finally stop messing about and go back to what everyone loved from them in Super Mario World. I encourage experimenting with your identity, of course, but it’s good to be back, and now they are more mortal than ever! A single shot from an Ice Flower is enough to instantly vaporize a Podoboo in a puff of smoke, which is a bit scary! Are they really just pure fireballs that can be put out just like that? What a frightening life to live!

And in Super Mario Galaxy 2, they... hey, wait!! You took away their eyes again! Now you are just being inconsiderate. This outraged me as a kid! One of my most vivid memories of playing this game with my brother involved chanting “Podoboo rights! They deserve eyes!” because this upset me so much. Maybe my past as an activist is why I am so passionate about Mario enemies these days... I think I was 100 percent correct in hindsight, and now you know some of my backstory, too!

What relief it gave me to find out they were back to their usual selves in 3D Land! And they have been ever since, of course getting redesigned for the modern Paper Mario games and everything.

What’s this? Blue Podoboos! Podo-blues, even...! They show up in 3D World, in its incredibly cool-looking blue lava levels! It’s a well known fact that blue fire is objectively cooler than red fire, and it seems even the Podoboos wanted in on the action! Blue Lava is an actual phenomenon I’ve just learnt, though it’s a sulfuric fire rather than lava. Could it be that Podoboos, being made entirely of lava, adapt to their environment? I’m not sure...

As an aside, the blue Lava Bubbles aren’t to be confused with Lava Bubble (Blue), which are from Mario Galaxy and show up during King Kaliente’s fight! They hop around on the ground and have square-ish eyes, which is enough to make them different I guess!

The Podoboo’s next big appearance, in Super Mario Odyssey, was in Soup! Yes you heard me- Soup! Some delightfully pepto-bismol pink coloured soup, no less. This is why I wasn’t too sure about Podoboo’s being able to adapt to their environment earlier- the Luncheon Kingdom is a big soup volcano after all, but the fact these Lava Bubbles are able to live in it is very interesting!

There is simply no way I would talk about Odyssey here without talking about possibly its greatest achievement, the best game design decision ever made! After decades of begging from fans, they finally did the impossible- they made Podoboo playable! Now it is Podo-you! It is quite unlike the other captures in the game, since it keeps the Podoboo’s simple-looking eyes and simply adds onto it a nose and a mustache! You may very well be the world’s first Podoboo with a sense of smell! I wonder if that is a benefit or not. The constant smell of soup might be a bit overpowering.

Not only is this delightful, but it gives us more insight into the life of the humble Podoboo. First of all is the fact that they can swim around in lava, not just jump in one spot! Do you think they do this when we aren’t looking? I really hope so! Imagine a school of Podoboos swimming through molten lava in a castle’s moat. How delightful!

The Luncheon Kingdom is also home to a number of Lava cannons, marked with a Podoboo’s lovely face. These are cannons for only for Podoboos to launch themselves across the kingdom, from one body of lava to another! My question is whether this was technology made by Podoboos themselves or whether it was made by some generous Podoboo lovers as some lava equivalent to the Fish Tube. I think I would take either explanation!

And last I have a Podoboo appearance that even I, the world’s biggest Podoboo fan, didn’t know about! Paper Mario Color Splash has a Big Lava Bubble boss which speaks with you through a Shy Guy translator! It is quite upset that you barged into its volcano and decided to change the temperature. Mario, of course, kills it anyway, and also the Shy Guy translator without a second thought.

Still, just take a look at this sprite sheet! How cute! A little disappointing that they thinned out the eyes, but wow! They more than make up for it with this range of expressions! An angry Podoboo! A sad Podoboo! And my personal favorite is of course the shocked Podoboo with its assymetrical dot eyes, which might be one of the best things I’ve ever seen.

To be honest, I could talk about Podoboo forever! If you didn’t stop me, I would go on all day about their every appearance, but I kind of had to limit myself to some of the most relevant ones. I just think they’re neat! And cute! And silly! Besides, I’m Mod F Boy, so I’m basically obliged to talk about fireballs with eyes! But for now I must bid you Pod-adieu!

...Not! What, did you really believe me? Well you clicked the Keep Reading button, so you only have yourself to blame for this. Here I am talking about more Lava Bubbles from all over, because Lava Bubble’s career has taken it BEYOND the Mario series! Wow!

Podoboo’s had quite a few appearance in the Zelda series, appearing in Link’s Awakening, both the Oracle games, and even Cadence of Hyrule! Their Zelda wiki page is still called Podoboo instead of Lava Bubble, which means those Zelda fans have it better than we do. But wow, this is a pretty angry looking Podoboo! I wouldn’t mess with them!

Both the Oracle games even had a Podoboo Tower! Amazing! They look quite a lot like a Fire Snake, but they are simply a tower of Podoboos! Why don’t they do this more often?

Hm... The Cadence of Hyrule one doesn’t have any eyes. Come on guys! It’s 2019! Podoboos having eyes should be standard! Though they still made the conscious decision to call them “Podoboos” in 2019, so I can’t be too mad.

And they have even spread to Minecraft! In the Mario Mash-up Pack, they replace the Magma Cube enemies, and really there was no better choice for this. And now we have a Podoboo Cube! What more could possibly be left for Podoboo?

The answer is obvious- Podoboo in real life! Thanks to a certain Lego Mario set, Podoboo is now real and can be in your home for the small price of 19,99 US dollars. Please give a Podoboo a home today! Just make sure you don’t own anything flammable.

let’s talk about minecraft diaries rebirth.

and why it’s literally amazing. (warning: this will contain spoilers. lots of them. also, long post ahead.)

i think a lot of people hate mcdr because they were expecting a remake; but the point of rebirth is for jess to rewrite it. it wasn't supposed to be exactly the same.

honestly i went into mcdr with a closed mind. as an og mcd fan, i thought that this was going to suck ass and that i'd rant about how bad it was to my friends later. but actually watching it, i just... couldn't help but immediately fall in love with it.

ik im probably the only motherfucker that likes mcdr, but honestly how could i not? for one, garroth and zenix actually have personalities at the beginning. AND; the villagers? actually amazing. donna made me smile, visher made me laugh and cry, brendan was just bein as good as ever. like... i even didn't despise emmalyn with every ounce of my soul like i usually do?? the characterizations of them were GOOD, man.

and honestly, aphmau like--the way she spoke, her whole thing. it was reallyyy well done in my opinion. she was oblivious to things, but it wasn't overdone and wasn't done in a way to make her annoying. she's a very appealing character in mcdr, a main protagonist i do not mind following along with. her dynamics to the characters are really cool and all very unique. gonna cut it here so i don’t clog y’all’s feed cuz i got a lot to say :)

the early use of aphmau’s powers was actually pretty cool as well, it also really showed how clueless aphmau really was to everything going on around her. AND UH, THE FACT THAT SHE THOUGHT THAT GARROTH FELT FAMILIAR? GOLDEN. absolutely golden.

AND GENE OH BOY, the early introduction of gene? ik a lot of people are upset about it, but god DAMN i love it so much. his role in the story is very important in original, and i cannot express how much joy this brought me learning that he was actually getting the proper attention for it. and the fact that gene and aphmau were working together?? i mean ik gene was just trying to use her to get back to the "shadow abyss" (pretty pog replacement for the nether, gg) but god DAMN i loved every moment of it. i found their dynamic to be pretty fuckin funny to be honest, would absolutely love to see more of it.

i might be biased considering gene is one of my absolute favorite characters, but i honestly think that introducing gene this early on in the story was a good move. again, he's literally the right-hand man to the shadow lord. it makes you really wonder why he didn't have as much of an important role in season 1 or even 2 of the original mcd plotline. also, we get some of that good-ol-fashioned exposition with seeing early on how vylad and gene interact. vylad’s at a very strange point in the story right now; his motives are unclear, even to the side he’s ‘supposed’ to be taking (aka, a shadow knight.) another early introduction to a character is zane! this, my friends, is good. really good. i’d say that zane is the main antagonist of season 1 in the original series--and he wasn’t even introduced until like, episode 50. it’s not necessarily a bad thing, but him being introduced this early on really gives the audience a better understanding of what threats are out there and what our protagonist will have to encounter in the future. in the original series, there’s not much explanation as to why lords are disappearing/dying left and right--and while yes, that was supposed to be the mystery of it, having some of that early information is a better move in terms of writing.

AND IVAN?? BEING A PART OF THE JURY OF NINE?? I COULD NOT HAVE ASKED FOR ANYTHING MORE LIKE GOD DAMN that was a very pleasant surprise i'll just say that, thank you jess :)

and no i did not loop the 4 minutes of screentime laurance got in that one episode haha who would do that i would never do that anyways

SPEAKING of laurance, im so glad jess actually wrote him in this early :) she totally could have just waited for the first time aphmau visits meteli and meets him there, but no! she put him in an early episode. i dont even care if she did it just to shut up the fans about laurance but man that made me so happy seeing him, even if it was only for a bit.

okay i kinda wanna go over the guards real fast firstly; garroth. ignoring how weird the helmet showing emotions is, i really like how garroth is portrayed. he's under a lot of pressure because the village is putting a lot of the blame on him for malik's death, and he's trying his hardest to keep things running. the fact that garroth utterly refused the to take up the position of lord and even got a little snappy about it was actually really cool to see as well. and while he doesn’t have that same “reserved, quiet, observant” feel as the original mcd version of him had, this version of garroth is absolutely awesome. he’s more direct and blunt, is significantly more sarcastic, and isn’t as stiff or as much as a pushover as he is in the original. he even has a sense of humour. also, no homo, but he’s kinda adorable. plus, the desperation that he goes through during the whole thing is just--it’s really cool to see how hard he’s trying to prove himself and help the village. my rating for mcdr garroth? 9/10. the helmet... the helmet is the main thing throwin me off, i can’t lie. next, zenix. oh BOY do i have a lot to say about this man. first of all, his and garroth’s dynamic is incredible. when i saw how the interacted with each other, my first thought was: father and son. zenix has this immaturity to him that is so fucking fun and interesting to watch, and seeing how garroth scolds him is so fuckin good man. and! seeing how he interacts with the rest of the village... honestly, if jess ever picks this story up again, i would probably cry when zenix (literally) backstabs garroth. HELL, i hope that’s something that still happens, it’d be heartbreaking to witness this character that we’ve come to love hurting his mentor, the man who took him in. he’s just a really good character all in all, and much more appealing than the original mcd zenix. ...except season 3 zenix. no zenix can be better than that one. either way, zenix is amazing written to be the comic relief and he’s just an all-out lovable character in this series. finally, dale and brian. yes i’m going to group them up because there’s not much to say regarding them, but i do want to address them. for starters, we have brian; who’s already 16 when the story starts. good on jess for doing that, because in the original aphmau watched brian be born and age INCREDIBLY quick, haha. THOUGH i do feel like there’s a slight connection lost there--one of the hardest things about brian’s betrayal in the original series in the fact that we watched him grow up in phoenix drop. we were there from the moment he was born, to the second he betrayed phoenix drop. BUT OF COURSE, this version is a lot more realistic, so it’s understandable. i just think that if it’s brian who’ll be betraying phoenix drop again (if it even goes down that same route), it won’t hit as hard unless jess really takes the time to grow the connection between brian and aphmau. as for dale; gotta admit, love it. and like, i think one of the main things about how good of a call it was to make him a drunkard from the beginning is considering how much the village is struggling. the fact that the second-in-command is literally drunk all of the time really conveys the message of, “yeah. this village needs help.” plus, he’s another good comic relief character. i loved seeing molly and dale’s relationship too, it was very funny. PLUS. we were blessed with a well scene, in which aphmau had to help villagers out of the well. i don’t know about you guys, but that was one of my favorite nods to the original series. i cannot thank jess enough for that, there was a smile on my face the entire time. another amazing thing--visher’s character. instead of just being introduced to this quirky lil merchant who only had one or two interactions with aphmau like in the first one, we got to sit there and really get a feel for someone worth remembering and worth mourning over. we had a reason to be sad over his death, it wasn’t just some npc getting blown up suddenly. this was different, and this hurt. one of the major things that i hope is to come out of this is for jess to fix the major mistakes she had when writing the first series. she’d expressed how unhappy she was with some of the decisions she made, and i’m glad that she’s getting that second chance to undo the things she didn’t like. this series also gives her a second chance to really, really dig into characters and their motives. like, gimme laurance backstory in better detail. or like, garroth and zane’s relationship from back when they were kids? or how vylad died and who killed him? etc etc. she’s already done an excellent job so far, and i can’t wait to see where this goes. that is, if she ever continues it. god, i wish there were more episodes so that i could seriously let you guys know how beautiful of a series this is. there’s so much i want to say about rebirth, but i think i’ll stop here. i might say some more shit about it later, but if there’s anything i’d want you to take away from this, it’s: give minecraft diaries rebirth a chance. there’s a lot of potential, and this is a chance for jess to really change things for the better! ... but again, that is if this ever is continued.

I’m a giant nerd, there’s no place in my room that’s not full of merchandise.

I prefer to read stories that are self-published, for example here on Tumblr or on other sites, rather than real books.

I have a problem with jackets, I have tons of them.

I usually dye my hair according to the colors of characters I like.It all started with green/purple - because of the Joker. And the last color I have at the moment is all green because of Joker / Loki from Marvel (Oups)

Almost all tattoos I have are about fictional characters (also Oups)

No one, really nobody knows what books/stories I read because that’s something very private to me.

I listen to music 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Also, it’s hard for me / I don’t like to talk about the music I listen to because this is very intimate for me for some reason.

When I watch a series, it’s at least 2 times behind each other, sometimes more often. But never just once.

Films that I watch for the first time and that excite me, I watch every second that I have time. When the movie is over, I start again unless there are several parts. But then I always watch my favorite one 500 times.

Okay: As some might know, I’m a big fan of The Joker by DC.🃏Well, in 2019, the Joker movie with Joaquin Phoenix came to the cinemas and I was at the cinema premiere with my best friend. And the movie was absolutely amazing. I really wanted to watch the movie again..Aaaaand I was lucky because my best friend’s boyfriend also wanted to see the movie in the cinema so I went back to the cinema 5 days later to watch the movie again. I was so excited and so extremely happy that I trembled and could not stand still. xD And for these two reasons, I accidentally dropped my not really old phone. It just fell straight down on the stones in front of the cinema and the display was completely broken..Well, what can I say? I needed a new one.. 😂😅But the movie was still fantastic!😍🤭This is actually one of the stupidest things that ever happened to me. xD

Hey Ho! In fact, I haven’t experienced any paranormal things. Which is probably also because I don’t believe in that and I’ve found a rational cause for everything so far. (Important: I don’t believe in it, but I don’t say it doesn’t exist, I don’t want anyone to feel attacked)

And a nightmare I’ll never forget? In fact, I can’t think of any one. There’s a dream I’ve have since I was a kid: It’s about two little wolves trying to eat me. xD And I can even tell where that came from.

The movie to blame for this is: Twilight xD

Yep… When I first watched this movie, I was way too young, and as a child I was always very anxious. Just such things and horror movies in general were terrible for me (today it is actually no longer so) (Even the dream is no longer bad today and yet it has a bitter aftertaste of childhood.)

In any case, I was much too young and that did not let me go back then. xD But a really unsettling dream I had was: Well.. Do you know the Pink Panther? 😂

I once dreamed that the Panther “chased” me through an endless long corridor. It was an endless corridor in pink with countless doors. He sang the theme song and threw clocks at me…😅 And that went on all night until I woke up.

(This, by the way, had a trigger too. A German song (the rapper only took the melody of the title music and wrote his own lyrics. The text isn’t really cool though and that’s the reason)

Endwalker commentary - day 1!

SPOILER WARNING. I think I’m 1/3rd through? unfiltered first impressions

I love it so far!! I literally played the entire day and if I didn’t log in at 7:45 am like a madlad I don’t think I would’ve played at all, the queues seem so busted.

In some ways the stakes don’t feel as dire as SHB (at first, the despair starts to kick in later and I have a feeling there will be MORE despair) but I think it’s because throughout, there’s a very prevalent theme of hope despite certain doom. To fight in spite of the odds, and the lack of cynicism. I really dig that, it’s uplifting. So starting from the top!

Going to Sharlayan

I can’t help but feel a sinking sense of dread as hopeful music plays and all my comrades are cheery. I feel like someone is gonna EAT IT and I’m scared

I can’t wait to bring Florus through the zone ICly...the goddamn angst potential. Though in like, an irl year, because there’s so much other RP chaos happening in Heartwood so that’s probably how long it’ll take for me to even consider bringing him home bUT. WHEN IT HAPPENS. -kneels- hallelujah

I can’t even imagine what the final two “full” zones are, I feel like we’ve gone everywhere already. I’m scared. Urianger hold me.

Slenderman- slendy would totally be more open to you than the other pastas. He’d share his issues, and encourage you to share your own with him. He’d most definitely enjoy your company around the woods, or mansion, and would make sure you’re always comfortable in his presence.

Zalgo- this is a Yikes. He would try his best not to get so angry at you, and would give you small little pet names such as ‘princess’ or ‘darling’. Zalgo would also change his physical appearance in front of you, because he would honestly get a bit self conscious being around you in his normal demon form, yet, he might slowly learn that your accepting of his appearance no matter what and would actually get mad at you for being so friendly towards him.

Jeff- he wouldn’t be as harsh and rude to you..maybe. He might tone it down a bit, Jeff’s just a lovable asshole. He’d use to vent and strongly encourge you to wear his hoodie, even if you aren’t cold (Jesus Christ man), mainly because he’d like how it looks on you. Jeff would also go out of his way to threaten and/or hurt anyone who messes with you.

Jane- Jane would feel more comfortable around you and show you her true appearance without her mask or black wig, as she trusts you’ll still be kind and supportive. Finding out you are alright with her true appearance, whenever you and Jane have your private little hangout times she’ll show her true self to you, maybe even explain her past to you about Jeff.

Nina- when you first started out as friends she would not. shut. up. about. Jeff. Yeah she’s that type of person, yet you tolerated that and got use to her fantasizing. After a while of you two knowing each other, and Nina developing feelings towards you, she’d probably get more quiet around you, and a bit more awkward in your presence as she’s nervous around you. Jeff is already annoyed by her, so she doesn’t want to mess up with you.

Dr. Smiley- he’d go out of his way to make sure you’re always in good health, mentally and physically, and would always scold you if you injured yourself. As his lover interesting, his main goal is to make sure you’re always safe and out of harms way, as well as him regularly sharing details about his most recent ‘operations’ as he believes you’ll be comfortable with it. Let’s hope you’re ready to hear every detail.

Bloody Painter- if you even managed to get Helen to trust you in the first place you get a cookie, he’s always so closed off. His main signs will be preferring to be around you a lot, brushing his hand against yours, asking to draw you, getting a bit flustered whenever you laugh or smile, and just staring at you (not in the creepy way). He may even crack a smile near you and would probably share about his childhood.

Kagekao- honestly this guy is so open he’ll straight up drop the most obvious signs. He’ll flirt with you, play with your hair, be really touchy..you get the gist. He’s very affectionate with you after developing his crush, hell he might even following you around a bit and if you ever manage to spot him he always manages to find an excuse. Not saying it’s a good one, but it’s an excuse.

Zero- panda child? This’ll be fun. Zero, like Kagekao, will be a bit open with her feelings, but not as obvious like the wine demon. She would probably do small little things like hold your hand, ask you how your day was, and if you’re ever sad she will go out her way to hold you close and comfort you the best she can. She is a bit good with emotions, as she remembered how sad Alice would get, so she has some experience with that and would cheer you up.

Nathan- he would try his best to act sane in front of you, maybe even block out his sister’s homicidal thoughts whenever you two are around each other. Nathan would give you small gifts such as necklaces or bracelets, and, like Helen, get a bit of a red face whenever he sees your shining smile. After what happened to his sister, seeing how close they were, he would do his best to keep you out of harm and make sure you’re always safe by sending you texts about how you’re doing. If you don’t answer in about- probably five minutes- he’ll start getting worried and try to call you.

Clockwork- she’d try to deny her feelings at first, seeing as her last relationship went with her boyfriend. After finally accepting she had romantic feelings towards you, her main question to you would always be ‘you like my drawings, right? You don’t find them creepy??’ Clock would also offer to draw you some pictures that aren’t always so gore filled if you don’t like that. Your comfort and thoughts are most important to her.

Pup- poetry, songs, he’s probably the most romantic out of them all. He would always like being around you, and from his past relationship with Emra, he’d always ask you if you’ll leave him. You aren’t dating, correct, but the paranoia still gets to him that he might lose the love of his life again. He’d always second guess his word choice to you to you and keep in mind what would make you uncomfortable.

EJ- Jack would try to drop his cannabalistic acts in front of you and would always keep your comfort in his mind. He might be a bit touchy, like holding your hand, playing with your hair, or just wrapping his arms around you and simply play it off as ‘he’s just cold’. Honestly he doesn’t get cold, at all, but it’s a good excuse to hold you in his arms. He might even unmask himself in your presence as he’s confident you won’t judge his appearance.

Judge Angels- She was already sweet with you when you first started being friends, but as she developed feelings, her actions changed. Dina would often fiddle with her hands, space out a bit, and awkwardly laugh at any questions you have about her behavior. As time goes on she may get a bit more comfortable about your presence and may even give you hugs at random times and just brush it off as she needed a hug.

Jason- being as creative as he is, Jason would probably make small little toys or stuffed animals for you, and would ask for your assistance. He would try to get more used to your hobbies, and might even try them just so he can get to know you even more than he already does. As his hair is long, he might even let you play with it as you please, it’s honestly soothing to him whenever he needs to relax.

Ben: if you’re playing video games with him, he just might let you win on purpose because he loves how excited you get when you beat him, buuuut he would also be willing to kick your ass since your pouty face is also down right adorable. He’d also do the cheesiest thing ever like moving his bed in Minecraft next to yours and probably do some hacks to get your Minecraft dog back from the dead. Smh we gotta love him 😔👊

The Rake- Rake would spend as much time with you as possible whenever you enter the woods. It’s like he can sense you. Whenever you set foot in the forest he always comes running over to you and just sits their, enjoying your company in silence as he doesn’t much prefer to talk. He might get a slight bit physical by resting his head on your arm or shoulder and will just listen to you speak, he may even fall asleep by hearing your soothing voice.

Toby- tobers would constantly be by your side and chatting with you, as he loves to hear your talk and see you light up with excitement whenever you discuss a topic of interest with him. He would try his best to control his tics and stutters, though it wouldn’t work and he’d clearly get frustrated, and embarrassed whenever he would stutter or twitch in front of you. His favorite thing to do with you as you are the love of his life would be to take strolls through parks or in the forest, as walks are always a nice way for him to clear his head and he loves the comfortable silence between you and him.

Rouge- she’d be very reluctant with her first feelings towards you, as her last relationship with her fiancé ended up with him dying. She doesn’t want her significant other leaving her like that again, so she may avoid you for some time. After finally getting some guts and accepting her feelings, she might give it a go with being around you would drop a few hints such as asking you if you want to star gaze, if there’s anything hurting or bothering you, and she’d even offer up her jacket to you if you get cold.

Kate- with how kate is, she’d deny every bit of love she feels. She may even act a bit rude towards you at first. After a week or so, she’d realize her mistakes and get really clingy with you and would just repeatedly apologize by just saying sorry, or she may get you a few gifts. It won’t take her long to finally confess her feelings to you though, as she hates just being near your presence, unable to hold you and have you not question it. (She tried it once and was awkward about making an excuse. It was a terrible one.)

Marble Hornets

Right off the bat, all four of them would avoid you because they don’t want you to get exposed to slender or get tangled in the mess.

Brian- Yes he’d be pushing you away a bit, but that wouldn’t stop him from expressing how he feels. He might send you cute little text messages or call you to check up on you. Rarely, he will stop by and visit, take you out for dinner, and maybe drop a few flirts. It’s hard for him though, as your safety is everything.

Tim- he wouldn’t spend his entire time avoiding you, though he would take caution with you. Like Brian, you’re important to him. Tim and you would probably go out for drives every so often, just to relax and escape reality for a bit, and to chat. He might even bring his ukulele along so he can play some music if you both decide to share no words at all. He might even try to teach you a bit and if you struggle, he’d just find it adorable at how hard you’re trying to learn.

Jay- he’d be the most distant of them all. And after several texts and phone calls to him, trying to find out what was wrong, he eventually just opened up about everything in his life, which he’s glad you‘re supportive and try to help. He might spend the night with you once he finally decides to make contact with you (for cuddles, or so he feels a bit more safer), he’ll go for walks around the park, and might get a bit nervous near you as he’s scared he’ll screw up with some speech or something. He might even let you wear his hat, or jacket if you ask. He’d honestly have a difficult time saying no to you. As your happiness gives him hope in the world.

Alex- he’d have more patiences with you, and might actually be more comfortable with having you close to him after a few days of completely avoiding you. Alex would show you how his camera works, and might even let you record somethings on it. He’d often give you small compliments like how amazing you are, and how sweet you act towards him, and will also get defensive to people if they give you weird looks and such.

Well this recap is massively late. Blame foolish past!me for purchasing Minecraft two days ago...

Still, deja vu, anyone? This recap feels like an almost exact play-by-play of last week’s: good second half, awful first. Honestly for those of you following my metas there’s nothing much new here to tackle, but we’ll dive in regardless.

Our episode summary asks "How far am I willing to go to win?" and Team RWBY answers with, “As far as it fucking takes.” If that attitude was directed against Salem and her subordinates or even a mess of grimm? Admirable! Now that it’s aimed at an ally and is screwing over Argus in the process? Not so much…

We open on base where a group of Atlas personnel are watching the mech fight go down, all of them cheering. I mentioned in a brief post that this is an interesting choice. No one else seems to think that Cordovin is overdoing it with the massive robot, so either a) everyone in this military is incapable of thinking through repercussions (i.e. “If we use something big and scary people will, astoundingly, get scared and draw grimm”) or b) they acknowledge that, to be frank, you kind of need a mech for this fight. Ruby says herself that they’ve fought giant monsters before. What hope does Cordovin stand against huntsmen—particularly a whole mess of them—if she doesn’t bring out the big guns? As we’ve already established ad nauseam, no military operative in their right mind is gonna go, “Sure! Cross the closed border without reason or qualifications! I’m going to 100% believe that you have a perfectly good reason for crossing, even though you won’t tell me what it is, even though you’re a bunch of armed teens, and a drunk, and a woman I despise. It’s not like this goes against common sense or anything!” Basically, Cordovin has perfectly legitimate reasons for feeling like she needs to stop this group and she’s using what’s probably the only means capable of doing that.

Interestingly, our supposed villain here remains the only one with a shred of critical thinking. She homes in on Maria, not as a rival, but as an adult who “[roped] in children to fail with you.” Cordovin is assuming, logically, that the adults are calling the shots here… because that makes sense right? The 17yo wouldn’t really be in charge of this group. And even if she were, the adults around her wouldn’t really help her with an idiotic plan like this. Cordovin is re-highlighting for the audience exactly how stupid this whole situation is.

While everyone is going gaga over the fight we pull back to see an ominous red dot heading across one of the base’s screens. Later we’ll learn it’s exactly what the fandom assumed it was: one monster of an ocean grimm. For now though, we return to Ruby still hanging off that cliff… dangling uselessly… before suddenly, miraculously pulling herself up in about three swings of Crescent Rose.

This entire setup is ridiculous. As you’ll recall, Ruby was about to get blown up by Cordovin’s cannon because she’s suddenly vulnerable, to an OOC extent. No one on the cliff helps her, she doesn’t drop down into the water, doesn’t use her semblance to fly up, and doesn’t climb the mountain like we see her doing here. This sudden ineptitude “necessitates” Oscar and Maria coming to her rescue, despite the fact that they’re supposed to be keeping the airship out of the fight. We had a cliffhanger last week that was less about whether those two are okay (we knew Oscar would be at least) and more about whether that explosion destroyed their ship. …No such luck. The airship is totally fine! As promised last recap, I’m rolling my eyes.

You’ll see throughout this episode that the plot continues to twist in on itself to ensure that the consequences of the groups’ actions are never so horrible that they’re actually forced to confront their choices—at least not yet. The airship somehow manages to survive. Maria’s eyes are working again. No one has sustained serious injuries. No one has died. The real question is whether this will continue on into the finale.

For now, Ruby has the gall to be pissed off about being saved.

Oscar: “Are you okay?”

Ruby: “Are WE okay?”

Yes, Ruby. Tell us more about how annoying it is to be rescued from death via dust cannon, even if it comes at the cost of endangering your stollen ticket out of here.

Of course, we’re immediately given another justification for Maria and Oscar’s sudden involvement: Oscar thinks he’s come up with a way to take down this mech, but they’ll need to actually use the airship to do it. We get some explanations about how the missiles are vulnerable by popping out of the mech’s arm. “We could destroy the entire cannon. Oscar that’s brilliant!”

No, that’s willful destruction of military property. Yang’s line later on about being smarter than Adam really hammers home that yes, all these kids are brilliant when it comes to battle. Jaune, Oscar, Yang, and Ruby all demonstrate fabulous quick thinking in these fights, but this volume their intellect has been limited to the literal combat. Any great leaps of thought that take long-term repercussions into consideration—like what’s going to happen if we use an invaluable question to steal our leader’s hidden past, or whether there’s a way to get into Atlas that doesn’t involve making an enemy of the world’s strongest military—go straight out the window. This is why they need Ozpin. He’s the only one in this group capable of thinking about long-term strategy. (I thought Maria was another candidate, up until she went along with this plan just so she could taunt Cordovin with more cashews.) The gang has so far been learning that instant gratification is their best policy. Well we just took Ozpin’s secret and managed to survive—never needed him anyway, right? Well we just took the airship and managed to defeat the mech—so what if it required some close calls? This is why that end grimm attack is so important. The group has got to experience a consequence that they can’t easily shrug off.

And, you know, the writing has to emphasize that.

Anyway, back to this current nonsense. Ruby is all gung-ho to take on this crazy dangerous task in the name of destroying the mech they shouldn’t be dismantling in the first place. I would have appreciated the parallels between “Can you make that shot?” and Ruby’s first team battle (Ruby: “Think you can make the shot?” Weiss: “Can I”), but like everything in this fight the enjoyable aspects are lost to the awful context. Despite realizing that she’ll be “Staring down the barrel of [Cordovin’s] cannon,” Ruby hops into the airship with no hesitation, leaving Qrow to reach out to her in fear.

The butchering of their relationship in the name of Ruby’s Can Do No Wrong attitude is particularly annoying, but we’ll get to that in a moment.

For now, Maria is all smiles as she flies them straight at the mech. Ruby is confident in her ability to make an incredibly difficult shot. None of them can even conceive of the idea that they’d fail, a pretty egregious position given that nothing has gone to plan since the Fall of Beacon. The only one worried is Oscar—“Are you two crazy?!”

Which… doesn’t make much sense? Oscar, this was your plan. How exactly do you hope to enact it without Cordovin preparing to shoot? That’s the entire point of all this: her missiles are vulnerable when they’re about to launch. I’m just so over these inconsistencies. Maria shouts that, “Sometimes the best approach is simply the most direct!” which had better be the theme that comes back to bite them in the finale. No. Usually the most direct approach is far from the best option. Particularly during a war.

Inside the mech Cordovin has an incoming call from the base and looks like she’s about to answer it… but at just the right second Maria starts taunting her again. Cordovin is distracted and she misses the info about an incoming leviathan.

The goading is, of course, about how they have one missile left and plan to stick it somewhere unmentionable. As the group knew she would, Cordovin reacts by pulling out her own missiles, giving them the clear shot they need. We get a long moment of Ruby setting up the perfect shot…

…and then Cordovin sees what she’s doing, pulling her missiles back just in time. The bullet bounces right off the mech’s armor.

Ruby’s little “Huh?” was amazing. Serious kudos to the voice acting because that one sound managed to encompass all that indignant surprise. I failed? But how is that possible! And like always, there’s nothing resembling a backup plan. Ruby’s confidence here—her arrogance, rather—nearly gets the three of them killed. Cordovin shoots the airship, Maria’s glasses short-circuit, and Oscar is forced to crash land them in the forest. There’s a moment afterwards where he comments that they’re all okay, but none of the shots include Maria. I honestly thought she’d been killed, or at least seriously injured, thereby hammering home that Ruby’s stupidity just lost her a new mentor.

…but no. Everyone’s fine. And trust me, Ruby is about to get a whole lot stupider.

She exits the airship and immediately makes a beeline for Cordovin, despite the fact that the plan failed and pretty much everyone is exhausted. We get a closeup on the relic as Qrow grabs her hand, “Ruby stop.” She gives her uncle another hard look and tells him he needs to trust her.

For one brief moment I thought that Ruby might put a stop to this, that her “Trust me” might be reframed as, “It’s okay, because I’m about to do what you’re going to suggest anyway.” After all, the Ruby Rose of five volumes makes empathetic and (usually) well thought out decisions. Surely she isn’t going to continue this fight out of pure stubbornness? Surely she hasn’t lost so much faith in Qrow that she won’t even listen to him when he’s (again) speaking sense? Yes, Ruby claimed that she doesn’t care what he thinks, but that was in a moment of fury. Before this we got her comment about learning so much from great mentors. Surely she’ll listen to her most important mentor now?

Nope.

Cordovin has ceased her attack, something that tells me—despite all her theatrics—that she’s got a more level head than most would assume at first glance. If she’d truly cared only about destroying this group she could have blown them all up immediately. Instead she tells Ruby to surrender and accept the punishment for her crimes. Ruby’s response?

“No!”

Everyone realizes that she comes across as a child throwing a temper tantrum, right? Ruby did something bad, started a fight to try and avoid punishment when she was caught, that failed, the adult sensibly tries to de-escalate the situation, telling her that it’s over, she needs to own up to her mistakes… and Ruby all but stomps her foot, giving an emphatic ‘Screw you.’

How are we meant to feel about this moment? Let’s take a look at the rest of the cast’s response for our cue.

Check out all those smiling faces. Yeah, screw authority and responsibility! We’ll do whatever the hell we want!

Ruby then gives another thoroughly ridiculous speech, the core of which is:

“We’re supposed to be on the same side. We’re supposed to use our power to protect people. But you just use yours to look down on everyone. We didn’t want to steal from you, we did it because you gave us no other choice. Now I’m giving you one last chance to stand down and hear us out.”

Ruby, newsflash, you’re talking about yourself. You’re the one who betrayed an ally (twice if you count Ozpin). You’re the one who is using your power to start and continue a fight. You’re the one looking down on everyone because you think your mission—the mission no one else knows about—gives you carte blanche to do whatever you want. Also, people love to paint Ozpin as the manipulator, but check out Ruby’s word choice here:

“Now I’m giving you one last chance” - What was the first chance, Ruby? Because, uh… there wasn’t one. You said, “Let us through.” Cordovin said no. You jumped straight to theft. There were no choices presented to Cordovin except the one that involves her going against a direct order for absolutely no reason.

“Hear us out” - Hear what out? There’s no argument here. “Hear us out” implies that Ruby has a persuasive stance to take, a presentation of why they should be allowed to go into Atlas. But she can’t give Cordovin anything like that unless she explains the whole Salem situation… which we know very well Ruby won’t do. In this case, “Hear us out” is just a dressed up way of saying, “Do as I say or else.” Ruby’s threatening her because as we see in a moment, she’s come up with another plan to cripple the mech.

“We didn’t want to steal from you, we did it because you gave us no other choice.” - You did have other choices. Lots of them. Not only is that a straight up lie, but Ruby tries to paint Cordovin as personally responsible, as if this one woman is the only thing standing in their way and not, you know, a whole kingdom that closed its borders. Her “We didn’t want to” tries to re-characterize the group as victims here. This sounds a whole lot like other false equivalencies, ones with a lot more weight. You know, things like, “I didn’t want to hit you. I did it because you gave me no choice.”

In fact, let’s consider the bigger issues at play in Ruby’s attitude. Bear with me a moment, but you know what all this reminds me of? Bullying. Over the last few weeks the vast majority of the fandom has been using logic often applied to bullying situations, wherein people are more focused on whether the victim had an “appropriate” response to the bullying, as opposed to whether the persecutor should have been acting upon them in the first place. Quick story time. When I was in middle school there was a kid who, looking back, had a number of behavioral problems that he chose to take out on me. Let’s call this kid Ryan. Ryan used to level a great deal of verbal and physical abuse my way, getting away with it because he was careful to do it out of earshot of teachers, careful to claim that any injury was an “accident,” and ultimately people were more willing to believe that the goody-goody teacher’s pet (me) had suddenly developed a taste for lying than accept the more complex scenario that a student was violently acting out. One day Ryan, in another “accident,” slammed into me hard enough to knock me into the gym’s concrete wall. When I got back on my feet I finally lost my temper and kicked him in the shin.

Guess which student finally got into trouble.

I chuck this story into my recap as a way of demonstrating a pattern. We tend to be far more concerned with how someone reacts to a situation than why they felt the need to react that way. Surely we’ve all heard, “You just can’t let them get to you!” placing all the responsibility on the victim to, somehow, turn off their emotions, rather than addressing the inappropriate behavior that’s causing those emotions in the first place. The fandom is applying this same pattern to Cordovin, emphasizing that she shouldn’t have gotten the mech out (a response deemed inappropriate) as opposed to acknowledging that our group shouldn’t have been lying, stealing, and beating up officers in the first place.

Granted, Cordovin isn’t a middle schooler still learning how to manage her emotions. Are there discussions to be had about how she might have handled the situation better? Absolutely, but that conversation is tangental to the underlying issue: that RWBYJNR are the perpetrators and she (representing Argus) is the victim. Telling Cordovin she shouldn’t have gotten the mech after two of her warnings is akin to telling someone they shouldn’t have punched someone else after twice telling them to keep your hands off me. Saying that the plan might have worked is just… so far off the mark I don’t even know where to begin. Getting away with illegal activity doesn’t suddenly make it right. It certainly doesn’t change the fact that a) the relay tower still would have been disabled for who knows how long, b) Argus would still have been out of an airship, and c) they still would have realized at some point that the ship had been stollen, further damaging these relations.

“I might have gotten away with it” isn’t exactly a defense.

ANYWAY, god. Cordovin has “heard enough” (so have I) and prepares to shoot another blast directly at Ruby. And then this girl throws herself into the cannon—oh sure now your semblance works—so she can take the shot directly from inside. Once again we’re encouraged to view this as the epic, heroic conclusion: Jaune’s awed voice over explaining what she’s attempting, the close up on Ruby, the dramatic lighting, music rising in the background… She takes out the mech’s arm and does serious damage to her aura in the process, getting knocked out for a few seconds. Ruby’s lucky she didn’t die. Hell, even Nora exclaims, “She’s nuts!”

And for what? Not to take down a grimm to protect the people. Not to defend her family from Salem’s subordinates. Ruby endangered herself and her team simply because she can’t take “No” for an answer right now.

When Ruby wakes up the first thing she says is a smug, “Told you” to Qrow. I’ve never wanted to put a fictional character into time out before, but I do now.

Luckily, at this moment we return to Blake and Yang, the well constructed portion of this episode. Honestly, nothing but praise from me for what they managed to pull off in this fight. Adam starts us off by demanding to know why Blake thinks she can win this time and it’s a simple answer: Because she has to. She doesn’t have a choice. Adam himself made sure of that.

Undaunted, Adam tries to undermine that determination by pointing out that Blake abandoned him. Who’s to say she won’t do the exact same thing to Yang? Blake has another wonderful answer—she only made that promise to someone he was pretending to be—but it says a lot that this doesn’t even put a dent in Yang’s conviction. You know, the thing she’s feared since Blake originally left Beacon: abandonment. I said last time that the writers might be going full perfection with Blake and Yang’s face-off here and this episode solidifies that. Relationship perfect. Strategy perfect. Control of their anger, perfect. I still don’t think we were shown how the girls got to this place, especially so quickly, but it is still satisfying to see.

During the second half of the fight we get to see the girls doing a reverse of their standard combo, wherein Blake is the powerhouse at the end of Gambol Shroud’s ribbon and Yang is providing the momentum. Adam manages to block it though—their normal finishing move won’t be enough—and Blake takes a hard hit against the rocks. As she struggles not to go over, Adam turns his original question on Yang. You couldn’t beat me last time, why is this any different?

And for a moment Yang collapses. Her whole body goes limp in terror.

That’s what I was looking for, especially since it’s a legit question. Yang hasn’t done much training recently. Her sparing with Tai was meant to get her used to a new limb and it was primarily emotional/strategic. She missed all the practice at Haven and you can presumably only learn so much from a single battle. By all accounts Yang shouldn’t be much better, physically, than she was back at Beacon and for a second I thought the writing would just straight up ignore this.

Instead they acknowledge it, giving us Yang’s line about not needing to be faster, just smarter. She catches Adam’s blade with her new arm and then Yang revs up her semblance, hitting Adam hard enough to tear up the rock around him.

It is, without question, a pretty epic moment.

Which makes the actual finale that much softer, something I was glad for. It would have felt cheap if Adam went out in some awesome blaze of glory, given that this is what the girls do to every dime a dozen grimm that comes their way. Instead we get the reverse. When Adam makes a break for Blake’s weapon she just manages to grab it first, Yang takes the broken piece, and without hesitation they both skewer him through. Adam’s final word is a broken, disbelieving “Oh.”

I really enjoyed the composition of this shot. Both girls taking a half of a broken weapon to make a new whole, Blake getting to face Adam as he goes down, slowly watching their fighter instincts give way to horror. Adam topples over the edge of the cliff… which I have to point out is pretty convenient for them. Yes, this was 100% in self defense, but considering that the rest of the group is currently battling the military, the last thing anyone needs is for Blake and Yang to get caught with a body on their hands.

Blake takes one look at Gambol Shroud and breaks down, collapsing under the weight of it all. Which… yeah. No matter what he might have become, it was clear a part of Blake truly cared for Adam long ago. No matter that it was self defense, the girls just took their first life. That’s going to be a lot to work through, so it says a lot that what Blake first focuses on is reassuring Yang that Adam was wrong. She’s keeping her promise this time.

With the girls comforting one another we return to the main group. Makes sense. With the mech’s arm disabled and Adam dead, both of the conflicts have pretty much been resolved. What do we have to look forward to in the finale?

By the Power of Plot the airship is still somehow able to fly and for a moment it looks like everyone will just leave while they still can, especially since Cordovin is calling for reinforcements. (Seriously. Did the kids think defeating the mech would keep the rest of the military from coming after them?) However, the call reveals that Argus is in danger. A leviathan grimm is heading this way and a mess of others are coming in from the opposite direction. We see the group’s shocked faces… and then a pan to the mech, re-emphasizing that it’s now pretty useless in this coming fight.

The group ought to be disgusted with themselves for putting Argus in this position. Their fight brought the grimm to Argus, they destroyed the primary defense, and they’re all so exhausted that, presumably, they won’t be much use in this fight. I almost wish the timing was a little different and they’d grabbed Yang and Blake, flying off to Atlas. What a kick it would have been for them to reach the city and hear reports of Argus being overrun by grimm. The military was missing a crucial defense. There were no huntsmen on scene to help push back the tide.

Still, the connection between their expressions and the mech is a hopeful sign that, after an entire volume, the consequences of the nonsense they’ve pulled might finally start seeking in. I honestly never expected to go 11 episodes with them blithely ignoring the impact of their choices. In my opinion, in order to maintain their heroic status, we should have started this process immediately after the relic. I’ve heard a lot of people claim that it’s only been a few days, but as we saw with Jaune, when you do something horrible we should see regret almost instantly—if there’s any regret to see. By all means, give us a volume where the group is grappling with their anger vs. their sympathy… but that’s very much not what we got this year. Ruby, and by extension everyone following her, has become downright callous. I miss rooting for our main characters.

Actually, you know what I want at this point? Back to the basics. As other fans have pointed out, let the group get to Atlas via arrest. We close the volume on them all in a jail cell for the crimes they’ve committed. Next volume James pulls some strings to get them released, but they’re all blindsided by a lack of support beyond that. Show us a James who took Ozpin’s words to heart—don’t scare people in a time of peace—and is utterly horrified at what this group has now done in the name of their mission. After all, he might have made mistakes, but he didn’t forsake the job of a huntsmen so badly that he knowingly attacked an ally and put a whole city in danger. He was overconfident in his technology, not arrogant about his place in the world.

Frankly, I want James to throw them back into school. You want to stay out of jail? The requirement is you join Atlas Academy instead and learn everything you obviously missed out on at Beacon. There’s a reason huntsmen aren’t chucked into the world at 17 with one year of training, and you’re an A-class example of why. Want to continue the fight? Get your license first. Demonstrate that you’re responsible enough not to use the skills we’ve given you as weapons against the people. Anymore than you already have. Give me a volume where the group has to come to terms with the fact that they’ve put themselves up on a pedestal because of their super secret mission. Have them interact with students who have never seen the same sort of combat they have, but who are also level-headed enough not to use that as an excuse for any and all actions they might feel like taking. Let them start finding a balance between the near total freedom Ozpin gave them and the militaristic organization of James’ school (which probably isn’t all that different, if Neon and Flynt are any indication). In short, give the group some stability so they can get some perspective.

After all, no one knows what to do after they secure the relic. No one has even discussed yet if they want to do more. Is popping into each of the other schools just to say, “Is your relic still safe? Yeah? Great!” so important? The Salem battle is currently at a standstill until a) they figure out a way to beat her or b) she drops some hint about her next attack. So give the group some breathing room. Have this emotional growth about their attitude, yes, but also explore what it is to have Faunus students in an Atlesian academy (expanding that world building beyond just Adam and the White Fang). What it’s like for Weiss attending the school she originally rejected, so close to her father again? Give Blake and Yang time to come to terms with the fact that they killed someone, even in self-defense. Let Oscar get some actual training. Let Ozpin reconvene with his inner circle. Let Qrow get some help with his drinking. There’s still plenty of conflict to be had—be it internal, grimm, or (a good arc for the end of the volume) Watts, Tyrian, Cinder, and Neo finally showing up in Atlas. I realize that a lot of people would probably find a volume like that boring, but I think it’s needed after the mess of volume 6. If Ruby and the group ever hope to reach a place where they realize “just keep pushing forward no matter the cost” isn’t always the answer, they need to be in a space where they don’t feel like they have to push forward all the time. Peaceful Argus apparently wasn’t enough; they didn’t take that breathing room to think through a better plan. So slam them into a safe place that’s also governed by rules. Give them boundaries again.

That’s personally what I’d enjoy after all this, but I also recognize that I’m in the minority here for even thinking there are problems that need addressing.

Regardless, we still have a number of practical and thematic questions to answer. Will the group regret starting all this? Will anyone in Argus die because of this attack? Are the Cotta-Arcs in danger? (Please no). Is everyone going to be out of commission because of their aura, or will there be a very convenient second wind? Will Ozpin return in a blaze of power?

We’ll find out next week, and good thing too. I’m ready for the hiatus, folks.

Other Details of Note

Ren’s “Guys!” when he sees that Jaune and Nora are okay is the most wholesome thing. Jaune obviously took a hard hit though, further emphasizing exactly how not ready this group is for another battle.

I like how Qrow needs to jump off the cliff to transform rather than just…heading on over to his left. Like yes, I fully understand this is for practical reasons (showing us the transformation is a whole lot more complex in terms of animation), but it’s still funny in a ‘Qrow’s natural state is to be overly dramatic’ way.

RWBY’s a big fan of the split-screen this volume, isn’t it?

In case anyone missed it, Adam’s comments this episode made it pretty clear that Yang and Blake are set up to be a couple. You don’t ask an ex’s friend “What does she see in you?” That’s very much not the kind of relationship Adam is assuming they have.

In light of all the news I’ve been hearing of, I need to get this off my chest. This will be a very, very unpopular post, and I’ll probably even lose a few close friends for saying this (you know who you are), but it needs to be said.

But first, some background:

See, I grew up in a family of Jehovah’s Witnesses. As such, I was told to keep an arm’s distance away from any and all non-Witnesses. This made me a very lonely individual. Further compounding the issue was the fact that, at some point in my childhood, there was an individual who abused me to hell and back. All the while discouraging me from being close to anyone that isn’t him. Further compounding the issue was my autism making it hard to maintain what little social ability I had.

Basically, I was kept in isolation for large amounts of time at a time, resulting in me gaining a bit of a reputation of being quiet, weird, and at times unapproachable.

Then, after graduating high school, I was a NEET for about 6-8 months. I had wanted to use those 6 months to figure out what I wanted to do in life. The result is me staying at home playing nothing but Minecraft and watching MLP all day, even further ensuring my social isolation.

By the time I finally chose something for college, I was socially...stunted. I was highly combative, prone to fits, VERY distrusting of people, and just was an unpleasant individual to be around. But by this point I was used to being isolated.

An important tidbit of information here is that when I went to college, I had the whole thing paid for by my parents (mind you it was a fairly short program akin to the US’s “Community College” and I still lived with my parents for this, so the costs were kept fairly minimal).

It was also around this time I was interested in firearms (though, more specifically, air guns at this time).

This next bit of story will seem a little more familiar to the Millenials following me on this site, but with a slight variation. See, I went to school for HVAC-R (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration), and while I was able to graduate, I still had to take a test in order to be fully qualified to be a mechanic. I’ve attempted the test, and I failed three times in the course of one year, all the while keeping social interactions to a minimum. The rules state that if I fail the test three times, I basically had to go back to school to try again.

As you can see, this was a failure. My parents said they would not be helping me with payments for college. And thus, I was back in square one. This was around the time my mental health was at its lowest. And thus, I began looking for any work. Okay, that divergence point wasn’t the only point where I differ. The positive about the air gun hobby (which evolved into gun hobby) is that I was exposed to a bunch of weirdoes (of which I consider to be cool people in my life), which, in many cases, were acting as the only social interactions I had.

See, in my case, I had just a few tiny embers of motivation to keep going, even in the worst of times. In the case of, for example, the El Paso shooter, I see a completely extinguished flame of motivation to succeed in life. A pitch-black pit of ashes and soot. At best this results in suicide (of which becomes, at best, a statistic) that nobody reports on. At worst is what I’ll be talking about next:

I can’t claim to know everything that’s happened to the guy in El Paso, TX, USA (or really any of the Alt Right), but the few commonalities I’ve seen between me and these Alt Right weirdoes is indicative of a problematic pattern:

Isolationism.

Humans are social creatures, and as such talking to one another and having dialogue is crucial. And at the risk of sounding like “hurr dburr technology bad Thomas Edison was a witch”, for all the good the Internet has brought us (and it most certainly has), it’s also acted as a double-edged sword.

I’m not going into a “in the past humans spoke with each other face-to-face myeh~” because that’s, at most, only part of the issue. I don’t know when, but at some point people kept cutting more and more people out of their circles due to differing opinions. This results in those social rejects to seek out anyone to speak with, both on and offline. Now, I do know why that happens. I forget where but I read somewhere that differing opinions trigger the same brain response as when a saber-toothed tiger rushes towards you: a fight-or-flight response.

I don’t know if it’s because of deliberate actions of some nefarious actors or just something that festered over time, but at some point the talking points between these groups of rejects became very extremist. But because nobody else would dare approach them with a 50′ pole (be it because they’re just that well hidden or their actions are really just that repulsive), their views go unchallenged.

Even further compounding the issue is all the news and media attention mass shooters have had received, especially around 2008-2017, but starting from Columbine (even though mass shootings took place before then, see Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal, QC, Canada). And given the nature of Cable News around this time (24 hour coverage of everything ever), this only emboldened a lot of these killers.

Now, to their credit, they did slow down on the reporting on the mass shooters’ profile and what have you, but because there’s enough of a backlog of previous mass shooters, it’ll still be a while before it all dies down. Not helping is that these incidents are becoming weirder and crazier, with the latest one specifically targetting Latin Americans and leaving a manifesto (in the same fashion as the guy in Christchurch, also racially motivated). Why? Because they know it’ll result in The Clicks. It’ll result in The Attention.

The same Attention they never received as kids.

Mix that with the utter nihilism, and this results in a horrific cocktail of terror.

Before any of my followers to the right of the aisle say any sort of Shen Bapiro style quip of sorts, this is not limited to The Far Right. I’m bringing them up because right now that seems to be The Big Discussion Point right now.

You may have noticed that I’ve not mentioned Donald Trump or his rhetoric. Let me first make things clear: I do not like Donald Trump. I do not like a lot of what he’s done, or what he’s said.

But the reason I’ve not mentioned Trump is simple:

This shit’s been happening since at least the Clinton administration. It’s only gotten this insane because it had the time to grow over a very long time.

You may have also noticed that I’ve barely mentioned firearms. Well I can tell you from personal experience it takes more than just a drum mag to drive people to want to kill (I’m so afraid of conflicts that I kept this entire essay below a cut).

I can tell you right now, for every one drum mag used in a massacre, one thousand of them have been used strictly in the range (be it an official one, something cobbled together in some redneck’s backyard, or as gun owners call it: “innawoods”). Most gun owners don’t even like those things for the simple fact that they’re expensive, heavy, and unreliable.

Somewhat off topic, but the whole “sensible gun laws” discussion infuriates me, for the simple fact that nobody can really agree on what “sensible” even is. For some, semi is acceptable but pinned to 10 or 5. Others will say semis are unacceptable altogether. Some will say no guns longer than certain amount, others will say no shorter. Some will say only some guns are acceptable based purely on what they’ve heard, and others will flat out reject guns altogether. Some say shotguns are fine but rifles aren’t, others say rifles are fine but shotguns aren’t.

The fact that everyone wanting “sensible gun laws” have wildly varying ideas of what “sensible” is makes the whole discussion not only pointless, it also assumes that the person declaring their view of “sensible” is in charge of what is sensible, and everyone else must follow it. A very self-centred approach, if you ask me.

All the while having zero clue as to what the hell they’re talking about.

And I hate to disappoint, but I don’t really have any answers. At least, one that can be summed up in even just a paragraph. Rather, the way I see it, every individual is a different case study as it is. We all need to approach things in that manner.

Because sweeping legislation of what people can or can’t say, use, or do will only work until it is used against them.

Due to recent events, it's time I told my truth: So, we'll start from the beginning, when everyone knew me as the new affiliate on his cell phone playing Pokemon. I was honestly shocked someone would do that just to try to help. At the same time, she'd joined my old Discord. I'll get into why it's old later, trust. When she joined, she asked if she could add me as a friend so we could message each other. It seemed so harmless I immediately said yes. How was I to know any better? This was my first donation and my first real time properly using Discord. So what happened? Well, it started out harmless, as I said. She sent a picture of the shiny Mightyena she'd just captured on Pokemon X to me, helped me make a channel just to post shiny Pokemon in, and subsequently posted the same picture in there. Again, harmless at the time. Two weeks later, we'd been talking privately and learning more about each other. Apparently she was also transgender, but male-to-female. She claimed she was 19 and currently in her first year of college. Claim being the HUGE KEYWORD HERE. Seemed innocent enough, and she even sent a picture of hersrlf to confirm it. With no context she honestly looked 19. But did she act 19? Honestly, she was a bit immature. But I merely attributed it to how I am. I'm a bit immature and I won't lie about that. 2 more weeks of talking and she asked me out. Me. Me of all people. I was kind of floored as I had openly admitted I had a crush on another streamer, but it was just that, a crush. Nothing else came from it and that streamer and I remain friends. Especially in my heart, as she no longer streams or has been on Twitch in over 2 years. Now, being in this situation, getting to know this person and thinking what she claimed was the truth, she honestly seemed very sweet and I wanted to give her that chance. So I stupidly said yes. A few weeks into the new relationship and it seems to be going well. By this point, I had been gifted up to Stormblood on Final Fantasy XIV and was also gifted 6 months of subscription for the game. So that was extremely exciting and I chose to play and stream it quite often to hang out with my friends. Well, she started to get real jealous, real quick. It kind of worried me how quick. She basically didn't like my friend, who I previously stated I had a crush on, and claimed she knew 2 people that did not like her for manipulating others. Okay...? But where was the proof in that claim? I didn't really buy it either, but I let it slide. If we rewind just a bit, she'd done something that I was already weary of. So, my first game I ever streamed on the PC was Black Rock Shooter for the PSP, I did it using the PPSSPP emulator and my Xbox 360 USB controller. All seemed to go well and we had no problems. She even made me an overlay which my friends decided to have a little fun with after I set it up with my alerts. Well, Autumn upped the ante by continually donating with my friends, which started a donation war. Until she grew mad that she lost, stole money from her roommate, and called my friend a stupid slut on stream. All these donations, plus a very generous donation from my friend Chris later meant I could purchase Christmas presents for my family for the first time in a very long time. It felt nice to give back, but I also wanted to be a good boyfriend. How? By...spending $50 on Toothless from Build-A-Bear. He had chocolate scent. Toothless was apparently Autumn's favorite cartoon character and her favorite smell was chocolate. I had it sent to her and so in response, I got pictures when she received it and she actually gave me 2 $50 gift cards for my birthday and Christmas. Seems nice right? This is when things started getting noticeably bad. I was told I couldn't make any purchases without her permission. Nor could I spend any money on my mobile games. Nor could I get anything for XIV at all. And to me, that was a bit controlling and weird. But I let it slide. Remember? No one ever claimed to like me like she did before. So, I let her walk me through what she wanted it spent on. I got several Steam games I honestly wasn't interested in and....Minecraft. Yes, I had to spend $25 for the modded Minecraft. This way I could play with her on her server. This just seems controlling though? Some people are like that. Not in this case. I still haven't fully rewound so you guys would know more. I do this a lot so I can explain things. Let's head back to my birthday in 2017: The entire week, I had been told time and time again by my girlfriend that she had sent me a package for my birthday. She claimed it included a very personal letter, a ton of Reese's candies, and two large Treecko plushies she'd bought for me, as well as a Treecko poster. For those that know me well, Treecko is my all-time favorite Pokemon. Well, she promised and promised and promised it was coming, and so I was heartbroken on my own birthday to find out it never came. She claimed it was lost and sent me a tracking number. Now we return to the gift cards and Minecraft time. Oh boy. You probably can already tell where this is going, but it's my truth and this is how I choose to tell it. Anyways, Autumn had become not only controlling, but very clingy at this point. I told her several times that I was going to sleep or taking a nap in the previous week and she'd begun to act like I was avoiding her or leaving her. It was this behavior that manipulated me to begin with. I did everything I could to reassure her that I wasn't leaving her and I cared about her very much. Well, one night she got very upset with me. This was because I refused to do 2 things: Let her control me on Minecraft so she could play with her apparent ex at the same time and flirt the whole time I was there doing basically nothing but continually mining for gems and dying to lava, and I also adamantly refused to take nudes and send them to her. She'd been trying to get me to do that for a solid 2 weeks and I simply wouldn't do it at all. And that pissed her off. She called me, on Discord, apparently crying. Telling me I made her feel like shit and it was my fault. I had to beg and plead for forgiveness, for her to take me back, because I was so manipulated at that point I thought she was as good as I was going to get. She finally caved after me breaking down on the phone with her. Her claim at the time was that she never had anyone fight for her like I did, and it made her like me more. Sure it did. Mhm. Anyways, we continued to have stupid little arguments since. Mainly involving me being forced into Minecraft with her and her ex once again, me trying to play XIV with my friends that she didn't like apparently before I was gifted the game and subscription, or especially me saying no to nudes. A week before our final fight, I was actually finally able to relax and spend some time with my friends that she didnt like, but we chose to do it off stream so she couldn't snoop. I even hid myself playing games on Discord so she wouldn't know at all. Both were concerned. I didn't seem happy, or myself. It kind of seemed like I was bending to her will and it scared them. Tbh it scared me too. I told them I was scared, and I didn't know if I could leave without more problems. More problems? What do you mean? Well, the night before, obviously Autumn and I had gotten into another fight. In that fight, Autumn let it slip that she wasn't transgender, and also wasn't 19. She lied about both things to get with me, she was really 16 and apparently gender fluid. Meaning she didn't mind being addressed as male or female. It scared me because I had just turned 24, I didn't want shit happening to me because she lied about her damn age. What was worse was that she actually sent nudes in the hopes I would send her some in return. Which is why we always fought. I deleted her pictures and when they weren't in our messages anymore on Discord she got pissed and cursed me out. She would attack all my insecurities and use my bipolar depression against me as if I was trash for having it. Then I would get the blame for her having to be mean and set me right when I didn't do anything to deserve that in the first place. I'm not into nudes, it's not shocking I don't want them. Both friends encouraged me to leave her, my mother even begged me to leave her and I just...I couldn't. I was stuck in this rut. She was underage and could use that against me. I wasn't going to do any better, I was going to feel like shit forever and never be happy again. I legitimately believed this. Well, everyone around me did what they could to help me try to be happy in this shitty situation. So a week after relaxing, I decided to stream XIV again, but I twisted it so I could include Autumn. She'd gotten a free trial, so this way we could play and enjoy ourselves....so I thought. Autumn was ADAMANT about barring my friend from even playing the game. No Discord chat or game for her, that's what she wanted. No, I want her to talk to me and I want to play this game with her. That popped into my head immediately, a clear light in a seemingly endless realm of darkness. So I did, I added her to the Discord chat and Autumn lost her shit. And did everything they could to keep me smiling and happy that entire stream. So why now? Why tell us all of this now? Because abuse of any kind, it's never okay. It's not okay to defend someone like that for supposedly changing as well, especially if they victim blame as I have seen. I lived through 3 months of pure hell, never again. You are not alone.
