And it's another rainy day here in The Bay Area, perfect for hangin' out inside, sippin' coffee and playin' records. Mr. Baggins here with Morning Coffee Music to get us in gear and in good cheer. I found a copy of this album in a small record shop that seemed to open up and close within a year's time. I was glad I snagged my prize when I did, because it opened the door to this amazing pianistic force of nature, the immortal Art Tatum. Pour a cup and enjoy.

One of the frustrations about this youtube format is that actual "full album" recordings are now rare...now it's mostly a song at a time or a movement from a work at a time. And in this case, the album did not make the translation from vinyl to CD/Digital in the same form. I did find a "playlist" that has the tracks I wanted to share with you this morning. Let's pick it up at item number 40, Charlie Parker Quintet on Dial Records in 1946-47. Let's start with the divine "Bird of Paradise" and let it play through from there. This is my favorite Bird of all time. I do hope you enjoy.

Here's another thrift-store find, although in slightly different form. This is my absolute favorite Duke Ellington. Trio setting, recorded in 1953. Pure magic.

Now let's go all the way back to 1939, when an amazing, fresh-faced and fresh-voiced Ella Fitzgerald charmed everyone as the canary for The Chick Webb Orchestra. I could listen to this stuff endlessly...here's the first set of Decca singles, from '39 to '41, just the first sampling from this collection we'll dip into again and again.

Now let's jump forward in the timeline to '54, when The Dave Brubeck Quartet gave us "Jazz Goes To College"

And here is what has to be my favorite Billie Holiday album. From 1954, it was a hits re-package that has the BEST versions of some of her signature tunes, recorded mostly in the mid-'40s, before her voice was destroyed. She is at her mature best here. Pour another cup and enjoy.

Here is another incomparable jazz vocalist who had her own musical compass and followed no one. This is probably one of the most comprehensive albums, from WWII-era, a year or two forward. Here is Anita O'Day.

And here's one of the truly pioneering female jazz vocalists, the legendary Ivie Anderson, who was Duke Ellington's canary of choice. This is a decent collection of some of her best recordings with Ellington in this playlist, so pour another cup and let it play through.

Back in the '70s, there was an independent label release double-album, gatefold cover, called "Jazz Women (A Feminist Retrospective)", Stash Records 109, released in 1977, which included tracks from these ladies. I couldn't find that record out there on YouTube, but I did find this! Here are "The International Sweethearts of Rhythm".

Here is my go-to album to introduce people to Dardanelle Brackenbridge (or Breckenridge), or just plain 'Dardanelle". She was a female jazz pianist who played with Lionel Hampton in the '40s and who has one song on the above two-record set. Here she is, with her album "Swingin' in London". The best lady pianist you never heard of!

WHAT YOU WEREN'T MEANT TO DETECT BIAS
