I meant process on how you draw it btw ^^
Not sure if you’re talking about IZ or Ducktales, so I’m going with Zim. I wish I can go step by step, but because I’ve been so used to this style since I been drawing it at the age of 12, it just comes naturally?? I will say back when I was a teen I had to look up A LOT of references and screenshots of the show and characters to have on hand when drawing. But here’s an old sketch I did of Zim that show’s how I mostly draw him!

Haiii Smiles!! Would you mind showing your art process? (Specifically how you draw people :3) I’m recently been getting into art and am just looking at some other peoples techniques!
Tumblr media
I really wish I could explain it to you but I just cannot 😭
I did make this process for a headshot
Tumblr media
Idk how helpful it is, but yeah. I’ve been drawing for so long that I just wing it everytime 😭
But! You’re doing great with looking at different techniques! For me, there is not right or wrong way to draw. If it’s efficient and helpful for YOU, then it’s correct. You’ll see so many people say “don’t draw circles!” But I draw circles because I can and I’ve been doing it for so long that I can’t do it any other way (tho sometimes I do boxes). But some people don’t use circles for heads and stuff because they’re too focused on making it perfect!
So my advice is to look at different tutorials and try them out multiple times. You’ll eventually get into the groove of things and you’ll find the way you prefer the most!
Another piece of advice is to “copy” other people’s art styles.
“But smiles, isn’t that plagiarism?” I hear you asking
No it is not. If you’re tracing someone’s art and then posting it without credit, THAT is stealing. But copying another person’s art style to me is harmless. It’s the same thing as experimenting how someone else draws and it’ll help you find your own style! It’s best if you look at different styles you love and see which characteristics you want to use! You may love how someone does their eyes but you love how another person does their noses so you just kinda mash all your fav thins together to make your own thing! Copy art styles! And you may be able to find out how they draw!
But yeah, I wish you luck on your drawing journey!! Hope this was helpful 😭 I’m so bad at explaining things, it’s impossible for me to explain my process without going into a full on lecture, which I don’t have time or patience for haha

Sorry if i'm bothering you/ you dont have to respond, but how do you come up with cool backgrounds and ideas for your fanart drawings? Your stuff is super creative!! I was just curious because i draw characters in the same poses every day 😭❤
I check my tumblr notif every once in a few days but still missed this, so sorry if I was keeping you wait!
Thank you so much for the compliments! 💖💖💖 this makes me really happy, you’re not a bother at all.
Just speaking from my experience, but an artist usually have several ways of kicking off a drawing. If I start off drawing a character without actually knowing what I want to draw, I face the same exact problem as you where all the characters are just there! Standing! That isn’t a bad thing, however. I sketch a lot (roughly and fast ngl) so I immediately shift to the next drawing and considered those my warmups until a solid idea pops up. I love focusing emotions so I often start from drawing emotions on the character before coming up with scenarios for them.
Another way of kicking off a drawing is to start with a general idea. It can be a concept, a dialogue, or a composition.
Examples of said ideas I can recall:
•eremin kissing in a wide bloody background
•Eren holding armin’s face w that bloodied hand
•Flojean in a cell. Floch lives
•Gen with his hand as foreground
Concepts can start forming when you’re drawing so you keep adding in the details, or they can even change completely midway depends on you. No need to commit to it, these are just something to get your engine running!
I firmly believe that putting stories in art make it so much more special. My favorite artist is a comic artist, and they express so much and so well in even the smallest panel, their art is truly my inspiration! So as long as you got your story down and try to express it, every piece of your art is unique in its own way💖
(Also if you notice, all my backgrounds are suuuuper lazy made. I barely drawing them, most are a bunch of gradient and colors. But that’s the whole point, as long as the colors indicate what, where, and the atmosphere I don’t feel the need to draw them out!)
I find my art very rough most of the times, but the skill to let go “refining art” and prioritize dynamic and overall atmosphere are essential. It’s also always beneficial to practice drawing people on different angles and pose because it broadens your options for composition!
One last thing: everyone has a personal library in their head, whether it’s for stories, compositions, cool dialogues, lighting, character designs, music, or more. Your library was built according to your interests and what you consume. Personally I LOVE reading fanfics, watching films and series and animations of the genres I’m into. Watching more media will always give you ideas, once in a while you can go back to your library and think what would you like to see that suits your taste and haven’t been done yet.
OKAY, This replies become super long for some reason😭 I’m not the best person when it comes to explaining my thought process but I’ve always love art questions.
Anyway I hope this helps! May your drawing journey be filled with joy

I actually didn’t want to block you because I enjoy your posts and like you as a person a lot. I considered us as pretty close mutuals. But apparently you can’t stop posting about me so, yeah, I think that’s a little sad. I hope that you learn how to have a discussion in the future. You’re clearly still a child but I think you have a lot of potential; I still like your writing and I think we can agree on a lot of things. I don’t have anything against you as a person. Never had, never will.
That discussion had nothing to do with you and that you’re taking it this personal is really sad to me. Again, I’m sad that it ended this way, I appreciated your blog and the Nero photos you sent to me but making posts over and over again after a discussion and getting nasty during it, is really not how you should handle these things. I wish you the best, truly. (I commented this before but my comments disappear when I block you so yeah, maybe you have the chance to read this when you have time)
dude i think you literally just cannot have a proper discussion without somehow managing to tire people out 😭 it was actually crazy how you wouldn't accept poverty being a character motivator, im literally not aristotle do you think im going to focus on a characters motivations that deeply when im watching a movie, im literally going to focus on the cinematography and the score and atmosphere more because it's visually stimulating
it was actually genuinely so frustrating trying to get that through to you and trying to give you an answer that would make you stop asking pen and i the same question over and over again, oh my god 💀 ive literally seen you do the same thing with other people on ur blog that try to talk abt movies or books & the like, like you genuinely come across as someone who thinks their opinion is right, and im sorry that im saying it like this but then i really do need you to understand 😭 like no matter how much you read Aristotle or shakespeare or whatever it's not going to make you a good critic if you can't look at stuff and acknowledge the different thought processes that have gone into mediums & storytelling, looking at the skeleton of an art piece is the same as looking at nothing at all if youre not going to acknowledge the flesh of it.
like if you genuinely think that movie has bad writing I can't help you, bcs you haven't even watched it and if you're going to try and criticise it and say "oh, this is bad writing" just because one singular person on the internet gave you a motivation you didn't agree with then like,,,, Look Inwards. im not even mad that you don't like the film, im mad that a person like you who seems to look at all aspects of a movie, including its production period (see: you and amethyst discussing the Hobbit movies) suddenly hears word about it from people who are amateur writers (well i am one—pen has a whole degree) and decides yeah this movie's bad. it was such a shallow and absolute statement that you made after making me try to circle around not spoiling the whole movie for literal hours, and then YOU got mad that I was coming off as passive aggressive when i stopped caring abt how my tone may come across on pixels. i have been talking to you on and off for like more than a year, did you think that unpleasant tone came out of nowhere ???????
nobody in the whole world will care if you've read a few classics if you literally cannot apply them properly to all the media that surrounds you. you understood i was frustrated that dc didn't care about art without me spelling that out but you couldn't understand i was trying not to spoil a movie you haven't watched after making me go around in circles for so long, and then you get mad when i try to explain to you WHY i cant answer your question and then you get mad because my tone was off?? after id spent more than an entire hour trying to defend why i like a movie that i didn't even care if you hadn't watched in the first place because i just wanted to ramble about a movie to someone who i thought appreciated the arts like i do ??? art is literally not black and white but you always manage to come across as someone who views it as either very good or very bad, that is literally not how i view it and i tried to tell you that and instead of understanding where i came from you decided to become passive aggressive with me because my tone was slightly off when i tried to tell you that maybe you shouldn't have asked me that question when i wasn't even talking abt character motivations to begin with 😭
also i literally have a count of like 9 followers and all 9 of them are friends who barely even use Tumblr, I am complaining into the void 💀
tldr please like try to be more considerate the next time someones trying to talk to you abt their interests that you know nothing about it takes 2 seconds to search up the summary of the ballad of songbirds and snakes on wikipedia & i will delete those 2 posts yes that was immature of me & i apologise for not letting it go

Hi! I love your art style! What art program do you use and what sort of brushes are your favorites? Would you ever consider posting a coloring tutorial bc i think one of my favorite aspects of your art is how you put colors together! I hope you have a good day !
haiii thank u!! i use procreate !!
i’m really bad at explaining things, especially my process since i’m not a professional artist or anything and i just draw on autopilot 😭 but under the cut i tried to put some stuff together that i hope will make sense to u !!
ill put stuff in the alt text in case my handwriting is hard to read ‘^_^
first of all, these are the main brushes i use:
Tumblr media
i’m sorry but unfortunately i can’t remember where i got any of them, so hopefully if you google it u can find ones that are similar if not exact. & btw all brushes i use are free downloads so there shouldn’t be any problems if u find & want the same ones i use
i like to look for brushes for my lines that remind me of pencils & honestly i’m still looking for a perfect free lineart brush bc my current one is unsatisfactory for me sometimes in my vision for a drawing.
now for coloring i put some visual “guides” together but, like i said i’m rly shit at explaining my process so i really hope this makes sense for u:
this is normally how i color skin:
Tumblr media
& this is how i color hair:
Tumblr media
if ur confused about any of it i can truly try my best to explain but i am Truly genuinely sorry if this shit makes no sense 😭
LASTLY, this is the finishing touches i put on my drawings:
Tumblr media
i’ll try to explain further here if this is too little info.
so to begin my final touches on my art, i flatten the entire drawing into one single layer, then i duplicate that layer.
on the duplicate layer i apply this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and i look for a gradient map thing i think looks best with my coloring. occasionally (and for this drawing specifically) i look for a layer setting that looks good with the gradient map. most of the time for me they’re kinda wack but for this one i enjoyed it and applied it
after the gradient AND layer setting are applied, the drawing looks like this:
Tumblr media
and finally:
Tumblr media
after the coloring & filters is all done with, i flatten the entire drawing into one layer and apply noise to it. like barely any tho, 1 % or 2 % is good for me, and then the drawing is done.
i hope this helped 😭😭 like i said i’m not a professional artist. i don’t study colors or color theory. my initial lineart is my lineart for the whole drawing, i don’t do a rough sketch. i honestly don’t really know shit about drawing i just do it LOL that’s why i needed to show u visuals bc i don’t know the actual names for any of this stuff. i hope u understand & enjoy

hi hina! i love your art so much i can't stop staring at your megumi and yuuji piece 😭 how do you usually render your paintings? do you use the lasso tool? how long do pieces like that usually take for you to finish? and when do you consider a piece to be done, like when do you stop working on it? sorry if these questions are a lot, or if any of these were already answered! please feel free to ignore, thank you!! i hope your 2021'll be a good one 🙇‍♀️🤍
hello anon!!! im so happy u like my art omg :’))) and no need to apologize at all <3
here’s a colouring tutorial I made a while back, my general process for painting hasn’t changed all that much ghfgs. Sketch>flats>details>effects using minimal layers if i can help it! I’ll also link a recent timelapse I did so u kind of see the full start to finish, you cn hopefully see a bit more of the rendering for yourself rather than just hav me try 2 explain :’>
whether or not I use the lasso tool usually depends on the amount of detail I’m going for with a piece though lately I have been making more frequent use of it. like if there’s Lots going on in a given area that I’m trying to render I’ll lasso it off so that I don’t fuck up anything else I’ve already worked on! I’m also getting into the habit of using it for blocking in initial hair shadows
my sleep schedule is so fucked so its hard 2 guess accurately but i think usually if I’m rly focused and in the Zone with like. ur average drawing it’ll take me a little under 24hrs? N for bigger pieces with more than 2 characters it can take anywhere from 2-4 days I’d say? u know oddly enough tht megumi/yuuji piece didn’t take very long at all I actually finished it all in the span of one evening i was really surprised at myself :’)
I consider a piece to be done when there’s no more sketchiness or glaring mistakes n I’ve had my fun playing around with the saturation/colour balance/contrast settings :’> slap a textured overlay on that bad boy and call it a day cast it into the void of tumblr n wait for validation frm strangers on the internet
thank u for asking and i hope this helps a bit!! happy new year to you as well~
