Seeing as it's Black History Month, I'm gonna take a break from your regularly scheduled girlblogging to be a film nerd and beg every single person reading this post to go and watch Within Our Gates (1920).
Within Our Gates is a feature-length silent film written and directed by black filmmaker Oscar Micheaux and it is a miracle that we have it today. The film was believed to be lost for years until a SINGLE surviving print was found in Spain, translated back into English, and recut to match the original as closely as possible. (This is actually not uncommon in the realm of old film a lot of lost films get found in random closets but ANYWAY.) The film tells the story of Sylvia, a southern schoolteacher who travels up north to raise money to keep her school open. It explores how her life and family have been affected by racism, abuse, and sexual violence, as she falls in love, works to save her school, and grapples with her place as a black woman in the antebellum south. If that's not enough to get you interested, the film is also kinda batshit. There are shootouts! Affairs! Someone gets hit by a car! It's wild and dramatic and incredibly engaging.
You've heard of Birth of a Nation, right? Maybe you've even seen it. That insanely racist piece of film history premiered in 1915. Oftentimes people will defend D.W. Griffith and the film itself as being "a product of its time." Well, Within Our Gates premiered in 1920, and it is a product of its time. It depicts white mob violence against black Americans, and how that violence destroys innocent lives and rips families apart. It is written and directed by a black man. All of its lead actors are black. It is an absolutely heart-wrenching, moving, and intelligent film, produced on a shoestring budget, that explores what it meant not only to be a black American in 1920, but what it meant to be a black woman. Different characters have different approaches to coping with racism and strategies for protecting themselves. It's complicated, and upsetting, and one of the most impactful films I've ever seen.
If you can spare an hour and twenty minutes, if you happen to have access to the film through a streaming service (in addition to being FREE ON YOUTUBE, I believe it's on Amazon Prime, Paramount+, MGM+, and some Hulu plans) or an institution (you may have access to Kanopy or a similar platform via your local library or university), it's worth a watch. Play whatever music you want in the background if your version doesn't have any added! Even if you can't watch it for whatever reason, I'd encourage all of you to look into Oscar Micheaux and the history of "race films," films created outside of the Hollywood studio system by and for black Americans.
Don't buy into the false narrative that the only black representation in historical film was minstrelsy and Griffith-style garbage.
#em talks#history#film history#black history#i hope it's like ok for me to make this post as a white lady i'm just very passionate ab film history#and within our gates is an incredible film that deserves so much more noteriety than it has#i feel like people try to act like The Past was uniformly racist and that's just how things were#when the reality is that just like today people fought for their rights and made art and debated different philosophies of liberation#oh also the film can be very disturbing like many many trigger warnings for various forms of violence and assault#but that's part of what makes it so meaningful the fact that it does not shy away from reality yknow#and for 1920... god it's just so so good

I didn’t know that they were making a movie/doc on Latasha Harlins…… unfortunately, they have a light bright playing her.
#she was darkskinned… fucking hell#this is so disrespectful#apparently the filmakers are black too#rambling#it’s bad enough that we can’t trust whites and nbs to properly cast us appropriately but we also have to constantly deal with black#filmakers doing the same shit#even her hair is… it’s not#it’s just colorism/featurism/texturism smashing all together into an ugly pile of bullshit#I hope the film is canceled because my god#do they cast light skins in these sorts of roles because they don’t think that the audience will feel sympathetic enough if it were a#black person of darker complexion… I believe so!#this is so gross#the director is a course a light skinned#casting a light skinned girl to play this little girl is… it takes so much away from her story and what happened to her#especially considering that colorism usually impacts the way black people navigate through life as they encounter non black people#and with how much more surveillance and scrutiny that dark skinned black people are usually put under vs light skinned individuals#a lot of them being mixed and even white passing#the family should sue 🗿#no wait… apparently her family approved of this film being made :(……. man…

stuck in the oceans gaze.
when the waves crash all that could be felt was how you hurt against it.
saving a drowning person involves suffocating as well.
we been at the bottom of the sea looking for peace,
peace is found when you recognize the pain of floating at the top.
the seaside of romantic disputes,
neptune used to feel warm, lately its been monochrome.
someday it’ll be teal again, in the right hands of care.
it takes destroying to rebuild.

This is such a stupid thing I think about consistently among the swarm of daily stupid recollections I have because I really need to learn to let go of getting upset at small things but there isn’t a single fucking day I don’t think about a few months back at my community college campus when everyone was out in the hallway waiting for the anime club to start that the subject of old anime was mentioned and someone UNIRONICALLY said “wait there was anime before the 80s?” And I felt years of my lifespan be ripped off.
This might always live rent free in my head because how the FUCK does this happen.
#meg text#even putting aside how the west doesn’t know most old anime how do you ASSUME it formed in the 80s#how do you forget animation here is so old that it formed in the black and white era of tv so anime probably followed#like I don’t put it past people to forget Astro boy bc a lot of people haven’t watched it past just knowing it exists but STILL#bro never took one film class 💔 shit embarrassing (is a film major)#I wasn’t even a film major when this happened though bc I swapped from English but now that I am-#feels a lot fucking worse#the only good part about this is I don’t remember who the fuck this was so I hoped they left the club#I don’t hate whoever this was for this but I would rant insanely if this was mentioned ever again#also I mentioned go nagai when this got brought up and it was in passing but NO ONE EVEN ASKED WHO THAT WAS#you really hate to fucking see it

most security guards/cops/crims are more dangerous to themselves than to any actual threat. in the Early Years of Batman, he was a Cryptid who only appeared at night & had the Power Of Money to support said "Cryptid" status via having MUCH better tech (armour, spyware, [nightvision], training with said tech, non-lethal weapons, niche tools, etc) than everyone else. At night, with a previously scouted out map of an area & a local's familiarity with it, Batman wouldn't need to "ninja" that hard because... unless a guard's boss was SCARIER than a Bat Cryptid, they're not going to be overly invested in risking their lives (though Batman's Technical Pacifism wasn't realised until Later: I assume Gotham's medical insurance runs by North American Rules, making a "non-lethal" beatdown probs scarier to the Average Mook).
The Penguin is a Threat because out of ALL the early crime bosses of the Era where Batman Began... HIS GANG SURVIVED (as in, it didn't get disbanded or turn on itself after losing multiple arms deals/smuggling shipments/sundry criminal activities via way of Bat Cryptid). Somehow, the Penguin keeps landing back on his feet: it Varies from writer to writer but the "Modern" Penguin is one of Gotham's more "civilised" crimebosses. As opposed to the Chaotic Crime pre-Batman or the Chaotic Evil of Certain Supervillains, the Penguin is an "Organized" Crimeboss. He's dangerous because he outsurvived all his contemporaries, he has Connections & Political Influence: treating the Penguin as a threat is Only Polite, in a setting like Gotham.
...except when the Penguin is named less for his Penguin Suit and just Penguins: those penguins BLOW UP & get sent into civilian areas. The umbrella ALSO blows up. It also tends to be a machine gun &/or a Detonation Device. This is the Penguin who Danny Devito played. The Batman of that setting was also one without decades of experience & familiarity with [being a vigilante], less Paranoid and Detective-y. Just Very Camp. And, in a Camp Setting, the Penguin can AND WILL "outcamp" the guy not commiting to being a Spooky Bat Cryptid.
The problem with Batman in his present incarnation is that we need simultaneously to believe that this is a man who can effortlessly ninja his way through dozens of gun-toting mercenaries, and that this is a man to whom Danny DeVito with an umbrella is a credible threat.
#batman meta#the penguin#oswald cobblepot#gotham is camp#gotham is film noir#gotham is urban horror#cryptid batman#eldritch gorham#from what i know of the american states' medical system batman not killing people is scarier#i imagine bruce wayne & wayne industries give subtle subsidies for mooks with concussions#unless a supervillain is active i would assume most batfam patrols involve disarming skittish guards & looming over wouldbe assailants#most people would prefer not to do crime or at least to not get hurt by someone in full tac gear#the batman setting requires a degree of good faith bc each writer & fan interprets its themes differently#generally the batman comics are a means of asking why people do crime & whether law enforcement can ever be effective w/o societal change#the gotham central comics go into the futility of being a “good cop” in a corrupt system#one of nightwing's fights with batman was on his wanting to be a cop & thus carry a gun#bruce wayne has obvs trauma about guns & people having access to them#idk whether the batman comics have ever been able to tackle gun control outside the generic busting of weapons smuggling by gangs#but one of the key aspects of batman's mythology is NO GUNS#which remains very controversial to his primary audience#but makes batman immediately preferable to international fans who've seen marvel heroes toting firearms#peacekeepers should not be armed with deadly weapons#stealthy bat cryptid using kungfu & gratuitously niche tools > guns#duke thomas & the fox family are kind of the only black members of the batfam but it was only a matter of time#idk if duke's comics have genuinely engaged with the BLM & disarm the police discussions but both issues resonate w/ the bat mythos#i may be giving more credit to DC than it deserves esp given how easily frank miller & bat video games have yeeted pacifism away#but i would hope that BLM was inspirational to the batwriters bc it encompasses everything that the batman comics set out to challenge#albeit through the vehicle of a rich white boy w/ a retired james bond expie as his butler & caregiver#only an autistic kid would respond to childhood trauma with “become a bat cryptid” & spend a decade learning how to be just that#some people are born cryptid and others spend decades & their grandparents trustfunds learning to mimic cryptids

Okay, since the Spielberg post blew up, I need to clear up something because I can see in the notes that pple think that Spielberg owns the rights to MLK speeches and I don't want to spread any misinformation. This is what the Vice article says:
In 2009, Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks company paid the estate for film rights to King's words, along with his life rights, which allow a person or company to make content based on an individual's story. DreamWorks has yet to produce or direct Spielberg's planned King biopic, but the rights have caused complications for numerous filmmakers. (Neither Spielberg's literary agent nor King's estate returned Broadly's request for comment.)
This means that while the MLK estate still owns the original copyright for the speeches, Spielberg actually bought and now owns the film rights to MLK's speeches. However, this doesn't erase how problematic it it is since this means that Spielberg is the only filmmaker legally allowed to use MLK's speeches word for word in his films. A White filmmaker is essentially holding onto the film rights, at the expense of Black filmmakers. The article talks about how Ava Duvernay had to write original speeches from scratch for Selma.
King has received only one major biopic, 2014's Selma, directed by Ava DuVernay [...] Instead of using King's speeches, DuVernay wrote original monologues that sounded like soliloquies the civil rights leader could have given. [...] When asked about the changes in 2014, DuVernay told the Washington Post, "We knew those rights are already gone. They're with Spielberg."
The article also mentioned that Spielberg bought life rights and according to this Forbes article, this means that Spielberg also bought the rights to MLK's life.
By paying the Estate for the film rights to Dr. King's speeches along with life rights, Spielberg obtained unprecedented filmmaking access to Dr. King’s life — supported by Dr. King’s extraordinary intellectual property (the right to use Dr. King’s actual words.)
Hope this clarifies everything!

Hello ?
Pairing : Lando Norris x Female!reader
Summary : It’s World Mental Health Day, and you get a call from a special someone.
Warning : None, just Fluff (for once), it’s short, use of she/her pronouns
Masterlist
« So today, in honor of World Mental Health Day, we’re going to as you to call someone and ask them, about their day, ask them how they have been. » The woman on the other side of the camera assied Lando.
« Ugh, i hate calling people. » Lando whined, grabbing his phone, and going through his contact list.
« Come on, it’s for a good cause. » The woman smiled. « You just have to say : Hey, I was just thinking about you, just wanted to check in, and just start a conversation with the person? Is that okay with you? »
« Yeah sure. » Lando replies softly, looking at the name he chose.
« Do you know who you’re going to call already? » The woman asked.
« Yup. » Lando pressed the call button; and put the speaker on. « I just hope she’s going to replay, she doesn’t like to speak on the phone either »
After a White, a feminine voice could be heard on the other side of the phone. « Hi? »
« Hello love » Lando said softly, smiling at the phone. « I was just thinking about you, and i wanted to check on you, y’know, hear you voice. »
« That’s very nice Lan. » Y/N smiled, holding the phone against her ear. « I’ve been thinking about you too. »
« What have you been up to love ? How are you? » Lando asked again.
« I’m okay, i’ve been working, y’know how it is. » She replied softly.
« Just okay? » He frowned.
« Better if you were here. » She smiles and giggled.
« I can’t let you be just okay, love. I’ll have to come to see you. » He said, grinning down at the phone, forgeting about the people around him.
« I’m happy you called, i needed that. Thank you. » She said softly. « I’ve missed you. »
« I’ve missed you too, love. I’m happy i called too. » He replied in the same tone. He looked around remembering all the team watching him. « I have to go film, love, i’ll call you back asap. »
« It’s okay, good luck today, Lan. I love you. »
« I love you too. Let me know if you need anything, okay? » He asked.
« Mhm, i will. Take care, don’t overwork yourself » She almost whispered.
« I won’t. You know I won’t. » Lando laughed a little. « Okay then. Take care, okay? I love you. »
« I love you too » Y/N blushed, smiling.
« I’ll see you soon love, I promise. » He said in a whisper.
« I’ll be waiting for you », after a few seconds, Y/N hung up, letting Lando contemplate a black screen.
As the call ended, Lando found himself staring at the black screen, a lingering smile on his face. For a moment, everything else seemed to fade away—cameras, lights, the crew around him—it was just him and the warmth of that conversation.
The woman on the other side of the camera smiled knowingly. “That sounded like more than just a casual check-in. You want to share a little more about her?”
Lando leaned back in his chair, still holding his phone loosely. “She’s... someone really special,” he said, his voice softer than usual. "You know when someone knows you inside out? Like, they get you in a way no one else does?"
The woman raised an eyebrow. "Sounds like it’s more than just a friend, Lando. Why did you pick her to call?"
Lando chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. “Because she makes me feel grounded. No matter how crazy things get, she’s always there, reminding me who I really am.”
The woman tilted her head, giving him a playful grin. “And you’re sure that’s the only reason?”
Lando laughed, shaking his head. “Maybe there’s a little more to it than that.”
The woman leaned in closer, her tone gentle. “What are you waiting for, then? You said you’ll see her soon. Is that something you want to keep as a promise?”
Lando’s smile deepened, his eyes softening as he looked at the camera. “Yeah, it’s a promise. I’ve been away for too long, and I miss her more than I can explain.”
He glanced down at his phone, his heart warming as he thought about Y/N’s laugh, the way she always made him feel at home, no matter how far away he was. "I’ll see her soon," he repeated, almost to himself, his voice barely above a whisper. "And when I do, I’ll make sure she knows how much she means to me."
The woman watched him with a knowing smile, sensing that there was more to the story than Lando was willing to share on camera. "I think she already knows, Lando."
He smiled, nodding slowly. "Yeah, but I want to remind her."
The woman grinned. “Well, I think she’s waiting for you, so don’t keep her too long.”
Lando chuckled again, feeling lighter after the call. “I won’t. Promise.”
With that, the woman wrapped up the segment, but Lando’s thoughts remained on Y/N. As the cameras were turned off and the lights dimmed, his heart was already counting down the moments until they’d be together again. And this time, he wouldn’t let the distance keep them apart for so long.
NDA : I'm a bit late, but take care of your loved one guys, make sure to check on them, and if you guys need someone, a friend to talk to, you can come to me.
