Sometimes you just are sobbing to Firebird Suite because you grew up on it and you just saw a dance performance last night that clarified you fundamentally, and art is the only thing that matters in the entirety of this earth, actually, and what a relief is to have at least that,
and then other times you are sobbing in a completely different way to Rhapsody In Blue because you live in New York City and you really, stupidly, genuinely thought you might defy all reasonable expectations of your city, market, and generation all at once - you honest to god thought you had a chance - and that when all the numbers lined up, surely that would be sufficient because all that matters in this world anymore are the fucking numbers,
and one email later you learn that you're still fucking wrong, you can get everything on the face of this earth reasonably right for your entire upper middle class life and it's still insufficient, privilege and luck actually aren't enough, even when heaped atop all the actual work,
and then you're leaning over the countertop you'll never own crying loud enough for your neighbors to hear, but it's fine because who the fuck cares what your neighbors think, you'll be out of here in less than a year anyway, and you were an idiot to think there was another way this could possibly turn out
because every. single. part of it. has been made impossible for you. even you.

As a native New Yorker, definitely do the Met!
Not only do they have the Creche, they also have an actual Egyptian Temple you can literally walk into (and unlike many museums, it was not stolen -- it was gifted by the Egyptian government when it had to be moved due to a dam being built), a lot of beautiful and interesting sculpture/painting/textile arts, and (for another month) an amazing exhibition on the Tudors. I spent a solid two hours in that not-very-large exhibit in October, and it is absolutely worth seeing.
The Met is a museum where every time you visit, you will find something new -- from the American Wing Period Rooms to the painting of Cupid peeing or ejaculating on Venus (it’s debatable which) to everything in the Costume Institute. I have wandered through and found something new every single time I’ve visited, and I’ve probably been there close to 50 times.
Also, if you want to go uptown, the Met Cloisters is great, but probably better when it’s nicer out.
The Guggenheim is... odd. Honestly, if you go, go to see the building (it’s really rather cool from the inside) and just how weird modern art can be. Also, the small collection of older art. It’s not a museum you need to visit a ton.
If you’d rather do something smaller, the Frick is quite nice.
I also recommend the MOMA, particularly if you like Van Gogh. Last time I was there, they had a great Magritte exhibit, but I think that’s closed.
If you prefer history, the Museum of Natural History is pretty good. The gemstones exhibit is quite nice, and you can’t go wrong with dinosaurs. Also, if you like sharks, they have a good exhibit at the moment. And their planetarium is lovely (just make sure you use the bathroom before you get in line).
But if you have to pick one museum, the Met is the one I’d go for.
Hey Sam, happy holidays to you and the cryptids! I am traveling to NYC in a few weeks with my mom; neither of us have ever been. We have 3 days and among our many tourist activities, probably have time for only one museum. I feel like I remember you have Opinions About Museums and which ones are good versus not worth the long wait times, can you remind me? (Any other recs welcome as well!)
I'm not entirely sure I'm the most qualified to answer this particular one -- my opinions about museums are mostly about Chicago's, I've only been to New York the once. When I went, I was there specifically to go to the Met 5th Avenue. I did also go to the Jewish Museum while I was there, and I enjoyed both, so I'd recommend either one; the Jewish Museum is free on Saturdays (or used to be) but because of the sabbath, the restaurant is only open for preordered, pre-set meals, and the gift shop is closed. Still, it's a great museum and well worth admission, especially since they have a really nice combination of permanent and rotating exhibits.
I really loved the Met 5th Avenue, and this time of year they have the Neapolitan Creche on exhibit, which if you're big on Christmas, miniatures, Extreme Baroque Decoration, or just really detailed sculpture, is an excellent way to blow an hour or two. (That link is from 2018 because it's a better photo than this year's, but it's absolutely on exhibit this year. Here's my photo of it.) You can spend a day at the Met and still not see everything, so you really get a great bang for your buck.
(I do have an Opinion on the Guggenheim Museum in New York but that's just because I think it's hideous, I've not been inside it.)
Other reccs -- If you have the time or are in the area, Shalom Japan is a spectacularly good Jewish-Japanese fusion joint in Brooklyn. Momofuku noodle bar is also really good but was hard to get into even when I was there (I got there right as it opened and there was already a line).
Readers, if you have thoughts, feel free to add them! Remember to do it in comments or reblogs, as I don't post asks sent in response to other asks.

Hard agree. I'm in the process of buying the NYC apartment I've lived in for the past three years, out of eleven total years I've lived in this city, from my current landlord who is just one weird guy with one weird unit in a condo building. I am not a millionaire. I am never going to be a millionaire. I recognize the privilege I have to even consider this investment, and even then it's not one I could ever make in this city if a dozen separate miracles hadn't all happened to all line up at the perfect moment. I am extremely, extremely lucky.
But I'm not gonna die in this fourth floor walkup one-bedroom. I will stay here for a few more years, fix it up a bit, and rent it out, because that's how New York City works.
And like the landlord who made this possible for me, I will be good to my tenants. I know it'll be inhabited by some other single thirty-something, or maybe a couple for their first slightly-too-tiny place together. Rent will be as affordable as my mortgage permits. I hate that the opportunity to give a home to someone like my landlord gave to me will be tarnished by developers and investment companies who don't give a shit about people, their city, or anyone else but their own bottom line. I hate that being lucky and prepared is going to make me sound like a villain. And I know I won't be a villain in reality, because I know how I'll treat my future tenants. But the fact is that's how language and the conversation is trending and I wish the hatred was leveled more keenly at the actual people at fault, not the ones struggling to make smart investments in a catastrophic economy.
lying in bed thinking about the insane propaganda and lexicon manipulation that has made "landlord" into a generic term for anyone renting out any property, leaving no distinction on a public policy discussion level between "guy renting out his inherited family house" and "real estate investment firms that own 2500 units in the bay area". everything from online discussion to political ads immediately pivots to evoking sympathy for the former when discussing issues like evictions/squatting, effectively turning these small-fry local property owners into (often willful) political shields as they feel compelled to defend their assets against intentionally shittily-worded policy that doesn't make distinctions between Some Guy with 2 houses and a megafirm. i know the "middle class" is disappearing but the class line doesn't just happen solidly somewhere between "renter" and "rentee" and i genuinely hate seeing discussion constantly pivot away from the actual cause of the housing crisis to either sneer "eat the rich" at someone with 500k net worth or console their crying about said sneering.
idk where i was going with this. end property investment companies.

Zosan having kids the earliest AND the most of em too out of the whole crew because they just legit have no control sishekiw
Though I have been thinking about my Frobin kid and I think he's in major need for a redesign and rewrite. Might give him a few siblings too and talk about Frobin's relationship and family dynamic which is also a liiiiiittle related to Zosan? Because Frobin, more specifically Robin, maybe jealous of Zosan—she's only human, can't help it. Yeaaaaah I think I'm gonna do that >:) I like writing about realistic relationships and exploring the different kinds uwu
