I bulk cooked and are leftovers all week when it was basically all I could really afford in terms of time/money but now I really hate eating the same meal more than like 2 times in 3 days and spend way more on food as a result. I feel guilty sometimes even though it's within my budget, because I used to live like that just fine. But I also never make the foods I made most then, years later. I'm honestly jealous of people who never get sick of foods!
Eh, you know, people need variety, if we were meant to subsist on the same food forever we wouldn't be the brilliant omnivores we are!
We would be pandas, which would be kinda cool, but I'm glad we're not. I wouldnā€™t ever want someone to feel guilty for eating a wide variety of food. Weā€™re supposed to.Ā
I have a fairly limited range of foods I eat, and within that subset is a slightly more limited range of foods I can cook, but I am also fortunate in that I am often perfectly happy eating the same food for a couple of days in a row. Eventually I like to have a change, but generally I'll bulk-cook 2-3 different foods so I can rotate out. At the moment I've just finished eating up all the Italian Beef, so right now in the fridge are:
Tamales (beef and chicken)
Meatloaf
Hot dogs
The last of the mac and cheese
Several hardboiled eggs
Thereā€™s other stuff too, of course, but thatā€™s theĀ ā€œmealā€ stuff. So a regular day for me might be tamale for breakfast, hardboiled egg on toast around ten, hot dog or mac and cheese (or a hot dog with a small bowl of mac and cheese) around two, meatloaf sandwich for dinner. If Iā€™m bored with all that I always have cheese and tortillas handy, I might make a quesadilla. And Iā€™ll just eat on that stuff for the week. When one thing runs out Iā€™ll pull something else out of the freezer. At the moment Iā€™m pressure-cooking some beef trimmings to make beef stock, and the last farm share gave me a beef shank which Iā€™ve never cooked before so tonight Iā€™m going to set up the immersion cooker and try sous-vide beef shank, which cooks at 130F for THREE DAYS which is kind of exciting.Ā
There is possibly some neurodivergence at work here, too, in that I like familiar foods I've cooked myself and I like the routine of knowing what I'll eat without having to plan it too much. Last time I was home, mum reminded me that I would go through phases of eating the same lunch every day for months on end -- for example, when I was eight or nine I took a salami and cheese sandwich and apple slices every day. We remember this slightly differently; she remember me asking for and/or insisting on it, whereas I remember that was just...the sandwich that I got every day, and I liked it, so I ate it. I don't remember specifying it; it's possible she asked what I wanted and I just said "same as yesterday is fine" or similar. But the upshot is while I really like food and Iā€™m not indifferent at all to flavor, Iā€™m also completely fine cooking two pounds of meatloaf and having meatloaf every day until itā€™s gone. :DĀ

kitchen + cat & attic + chance šŸ’‹
Tumblr media
What is the characterā€™s favorite food?
Tamales, but more biased to her own, and (donā€™t tell Raf) Kraft Mac and Cheese with some stove cooked hot dogs. Bonus points if the noodles are in fun shapes! The latter is her ultimate comfort food and something she tries to have around for days where she has very little energy to cook and doesnā€™t want delivery or if it was just a tough day.
Are they good at cooking? How good/bad?
She is a really great cook! She loves to do it any chance she gets! Sometimes though things donā€™t always work out but she is ever improving and never gives up.Ā
Do they leave the dishes out?
Well.....kind of. She likes to keep the kitchen clean but sheā€™s also used to having a person around her that followed the rule of I cooked so you clean. When that person isnā€™t around then she doesnā€™t for more than a night. In main canon verse she never has to worry because there will always be someone there ready to clean. In other verses....well man that habit took a while to break, then again sheā€™s fighting to even get time in the kitchen.Ā
What kind of food is in their refrigerator?
Fridge is full of leftovers and fresher ingredients. There are a few staples in there but thatā€™s where the stuff that goes bad goes. Freezer has meat and veggies and things to preserve to use later, along with ice cream and something sweet at all times. She did not grow up rich and living on her own she didnā€™t always have a ton of money so she knew and found ways of making the most of her money, like doing grocery shopping later in the day to get the cheaper meats and things.
Do they cook, eat out or get take-away/delivered food more?
She cooks more, gets delivery/takeout at least once a week, and then eats out once every two weeks or so. Obviously this changes with verses but if sheā€™s on her own this would be what would happen. She relies on eating those left overs from when she does cook so thereā€™s that. Ironically she doesnā€™t really do meal prep.Ā
Tumblr media
What is the character afraid of?
Not being good enough, letting people down, emotional intimacy, being alone. Heā€™s afraid of the things he currently is or feels that he is. Heā€™s no longer able to run away so he has to face these fears and well who wants to do that? Live Turkeys also make him very uncomfortable.
How do they deal with bad memories?
He doesnā€™t.
Ā https://youtu.be/EOBRARXvutAĀ This is the best way to sum it up if you are curious
Chance does eventually have to come to terms with them and work through them but there are too many memories, even the good ones, that are associated with negative feelings now. He went to drinking because he could get away from them and just ignore it. Life was better for him. Now he canā€™t do that so he has to face them.Ā
What is this characterā€™s role in a horror movie?
He is the one that tries to logic it out as much as possible. Chance doesnā€™t believe in ghosts. Now Cryptid type movies heā€™s the one trying to find it and record it. He ainā€™t going to live sad to say.Ā
How do they hide their secrets?
He hides them by not having them. He can be an open book about what happens to him. Emotions he hides and will not open up about right away. If he ever started to drink again he will hide away from the world and not interact with people, heā€™s gotten good at hiding it from people but if you know him well enough you can tell when heā€™s fallen off the wagon.Ā
Which of the Seven Deadly Sins does the character relate to most?
Chance fits more into pride and wrath. Chance has a lot of anger that can come out easily and with little provoking on othersā€™ end. His pride makes it harder to admit when heā€™s wrong or has done something wrong. He doesnā€™t hold himself higher than anyone else but he doesnā€™t want to be seen as something than what he puts out there.Ā

Observations about white people cooking stuff by a white American
Okay guys. I'm bored and haven't made an original post in a while so listen up. I've been a white person for a long time now. My whole life, in fact. And as nice as that is, I've gotta say, our cooking kinda sucks sometimes. So, I've decided to compile a random list of observations I've made while being a white person in a white family in a place where a lot if people aren't white and cook better than us. If you have any more observations add on, do it please. I'd like to hear. Or, read rather. Keep in mind that I'm Californian with a lil bit of German and Swedish in me culturally left over from the fatherland my family left who knows how long ago and I'm just writing this list because at the moment I'm bored and want to make fun of myself and a bunch of people that kinda look like me and probably have similar eating patterns. -potato -We eat rice, but we can't just eat it plain -We've gotta put butter in the water or something even if we do eat it plain -We pretend that we can make sticky rice, but we can't. We really can't. -For some reason we really like to pickle things -And boil them -Boiled potatoes -Pickled cabbage, pickled eggs, pickled beets, pickled herring(ewwwwwwew), pickles, pickled red cabbage(don't ask what the difference is. It's just red), pickled onions... -potatoes -We either eat spicy food or we don't, and the white people that don't eat spicy food will cry and complain about something any normal person would swear has no spice at all -dairy -Just put milk in everything -Milk and potatoes -Milk and rice -Put cheese on your pie. Put cheese on your goddamned apple pie. Do it. Appease the cheese gods. Cheese on pie. -Potatoes -Put cheese on the potato -Now put sour cream on the potato -And milk based gravy -Now smother that damn potato with melted butter and dump out your damn salt shaker on it. -Congratulations. You're gonna have heart surgery in your forties. Now eat the salty dairy potato. -Eat a spoonful of horseradish. Prove your superiority. No? Just me? Okay. -Vinegar. In chips, in potatoes, in milk, in eggs. Heck, just down a cup of the stuff. It's good for you, right? That's how that works. -Organic and greasy have a similar appeal. They are delicious buzz words that will get us to buy things. -For some reason some of us put canned vegetables in green jello? -Yeah I think we do a lot with jello. -Put fruit in it. That's probably healthy, right? -Put hot dogs in everything -Cook the dogs into your mac 'n cheese -Bake it into bread, I dunno. -Just find a way to put hot dogs in something and we've done it -We put it on our damn pizzas for crying out loud -PUT FOOD ON A STICK WE WILL FIND A WAY -Deep fry it Deep fry it Deep fry it Deep fry it Deep fry it Deep fry it -Asparagus. -Potato -Red potato -Golden potato -Deep fry the potato -You can cut potatoes like 135885428934 different ways trust me I've done it -Bake the potato -Boil the potato -Burn the potato -Roast the potato -Grill the potato -BE THE POTATO -Scalloped potatoes -Cheeseburger pie -It's time to get your gluten on my friends. Let's bake some stuff. -Have I mentioned deep frying yet? -Awww. Look. It's a cutesy sugar cookie grandma spent all day decorating. Let's spread it all over the house. -Deep fry the dough. Put raisins in it probably. Put sugar on it. There ya go. You have diabetes now. -The heck is a tamale pie? It has nothing to do with tamales. Oh well. It's a tasty mush full of meat and corn and that's all that matters -Wait that's not dessert. I'm getting distracted. -We call them Mexican wedding cakes or Russian tea cakes, but they probably have nothing to do with either Mexico or Russia -Fudge time ya sissies. -Eat the fudge. -Ambrosia. Full of marshmallows and fruit. I'm sure this is what the Greek gods would have wanted -Put walnuts in it. -You can probably grate any kind of squash and bake it into bread with pretty good results -Why do we use so much powdered sugar? -I'm moving on to meat -Bake the meat -Eat POTATOES with it -Store bought spice packs because apparently we're too lazy or untalented to mix or grind the spices ourselves -Don't forget the bacon -Wrap your damn chocolate bacon we don't give a damn. Put it in your ice cream. Wrap it around a jalapeƱo. Just get the bacon in there somehow -Meatloaf and ketchup with POTATOES -You want lemonade with that? Trick question. Of course you do. Drink the lemonade, Sharon. -Drink the tea, Katie. Drink the iced tea. I don't care if you don't like it. You will. Feed the tea to the children. Give them coffee. They will be consumers. Make them drink it. That's all I can think of right now. Please add some more. In the meantime, remember potato.

Day 23
2/14/20
Today, I slept in, which is something I havenā€™t let myself do in a while. But it felt nice to lounge in my bed for hours and drift in and out of sleep. i always have this feeling that I need to be productive. Likewise, when i end up wasting time Iā€™ll feel guilty about it or like Iā€™m being stupid. Only during school though, i think the thought of having so homework, although it is doable, will stress me out and make me be more hard on myself. But I guess it works, as I donā€™t procrastinate that often and I am aĀ ā€œgood studentā€. But anyways. I had a bowl of cereal (which i am getting sick of) and left for the bus to go to the radio station interview - I wasnā€™t thinking much of it /wasnā€™t that nervous. I guess I usually think, if it happens it happens, and if not, thats just life and there are other opportunities out there. I try to be as real as possible and not fake in interviews because being fake is kind of against my morals / feels painful sometimes. The interview went pretty well I guess, and they told me I would know by the end of the nigh (Spoiler alert: that didnā€™t happen). Afterwards I got back on the 3 to go to st paul for my nannying job.
I get 50 dollars every friday for nannying which is nice, especially for how little work it is. Sometimes I even regret working in the photo crib, although that is more hours. The mom is expecting a baby that was due last sunday, and still hasnt had it yet. I feel like I would be tired of waiting in that situation, and I almost told her that she was close to missing the chance for it to be aquarius, but i feel like astrology isnt really as common among older people - its definitely something that just got big when I was in high school. I listened to a lot of the band built to spill during my bus rides today, as well as land of the loops which is one of my favorite artists. It was so cold and windy, but I had errands to run after work so i had to deal with it. I took the bus to the train station and then took the train to fresh thyme to get some food and valentines day gifts. I spent 25$ on a pretty good amount of stuff including apples, gummy bears, tea, fancy salad dressing, and a giant cucumber. I took the train and bus back home where I made some mac and cheese and chilled until it was time to go to the rollergarden.
I went with Alexa and Tyler, and it cost 12 dollars to get in - which is fine, and definitely worth how good the experience was. I practiced my spins and going backwards and made so much progress in my skills - it was really rewarding. Its definitely one of if not the most rewarding activities I do in my life these days. And it was a good workout, which makes up for me not really having time to go to the gym this week (hoping I can change that in this coming week). When I got home i was physically tired and hungry - so i showered and then made a frozen tamale with salsa. I had forgotten about how I was supposed to hear back about the job but then remembered and then got annoyed that they didnā€™t keep their word. But i guess itā€™s not unexpected. It makes me think that I didnt get the job because they may have told the person who did and then said nothing to everyone else. I love to think negative and expect the worse,.... Something Iā€™ve realized.Ā

Hi sam, I know before everybody went into lockdown, you used to meal prep. I want to start doing that more, but my problem is that most recipes I find still require most of the cooking to be done on the day of eating- usually by throwing stuff into a slow cooker or by making pasta or rice fresh to go with the frozen sauce. I am looking for meals that only need to be heated in a microwave and can not seem to find anything except breakfast burritos and casseroles. Do you have any ideas?
Casseroles are a lot of what I do for meal prep, I wonā€™t lie, or casserole-like preparations.Ā
If youā€™re a fan of fresh rice and donā€™t want to microwave it, you may be SOL, but in case you werenā€™t aware you can keep rice in the fridge in tupperware, and if itā€™s topped with a sauce of any kind it usually reheats perfectly well. Often I will make up a bit of rice, fill meal-sized containers with it, pour protein in sauce over the top, and take those to microwave at work. Microwaving just rice under a wet paper towel also steams it nicely. Pasta can likewise be mixed with the sauce and stored in meal-sized containers, then reheated without too much pain. Itā€™s better reheated in an oven (I make up pasta in mini-loaf pans and reheat it in the tabletop oven I have) but it eats fine from the microwave. Additionally, most pasta can be mixed with sauce, frozen, thawed in the fridge, and reheated.Ā
Mashed potatoes topped withĀ ā€œsomething in sauceā€ are also pretty good, and I used to make a horrible dish that I nonetheless loved that was chicken, diced and stirred into mac and cheese, poured over mashed potatoes. Mm good.Ā  I love to buy cheap frozen potstickers, cook up a whole bunch, toss them in tupperware and re-freeze. Thaw in the fridge, cover in a damp paper towel to microwave, pack along some dipping sauce, and youā€™ve got an awesome lunch! I think theyā€™re also good cold, and you CAN take cold foods for prepped meals, like little tubs of greek yogurt with a small container of granola (a favorite of mine).Ā
I have also successfully made quesadillas and reheated them (better in the toaster oven, just lay down some foil and toss them on top), and enchiladas reheat fine because the sauce hydrates the tortillas so well they donā€™t get too chewy. (Flour is better than corn for this.) I often buy frozen tamales, heat up enough to fill a few tupperwares, and take those. Again, wet paper towel on top while microwaving and youā€™re golden.Ā
Sometimes I will do a massive cook at the start of the month, freeze the sauces, and then every Sunday thaw some sauce and prep it with rice or pasta for the week. You can also do an epic cook of materials for meal prep and then freeze those -- so like, right now I have a pound of cooked ground beef in the freezer. This week I can thaw some, mix it up with bbq sauce, and pour it over mashed potatoes; next week I can thaw some, stir it into pasta sauce, and pour it over pasta shells.Ā
I hope this has helped give you some ideas! Think about what foods you like and try making those fridge- and microwave-friendly. If youā€™re not sure, googleĀ ā€œhow to microwave Xā€ and you should get both tips and science for microwaving most foods safely.Ā
