This isn't to be incriminating and used against me at some point, however
I need to admit it, Unova Rainbow Run Quest and the one to get the other genies' forms, are driving me and my character insane. I did this to make me feel better, at first I was taking it seriously but then I started to think about memes.
#Vanillaart#personal#insanity#Also there's no Excadrill or dragons there because I forgoi#I think this is a fine work#truly art#I have nothing against Genesect#I just hate the heart attack I have every time one pops out#the one piece one is sending me straight to hell#KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

Hello! 'tis I, the pokehybrid obsessed anon
I was wondering if you ever had any thoughts you could share on what pokehybrids s/o's you'd find interesting for the Pokemon characters, whether it be pokehybrids that complement/balance them or just make the dynamic funny
I don't care about it being regular pokemon characters or their pokehybrid counterparts, I just always love reading monster!reader fanfics that flip the script and I'd love to hear more about your polehybrid au
nothing against hybrid readers, but I just usually don't have fun writing them (with a few exceptions). But:
For Ingo, I think most ghost types prove interesting. There could be a dynamic if it's Chandelure Ingo, but I think he just has a gentle and understanding nature that pairs well with him. Of course, with Chandelure Ingo, there's the established au with him a Primarina s/o (and Popplio Erin). There's a joke of him and a Sneasler hybrid, too, with Warden Ingo.
For dear Emmet, of course, Galvantula s/o is a given. He loves them, after all. Though, this does not include Galvantula Emmet since he would be too terrified of being eaten to even consider it. Human Emmet and his drider lover. He would be ridiculously proud. I can't really think of anything else he would be into.
With Cyrus, there is an established idea already of him and a Rotom s/o. Simply, his backstory and general disposition would be paired well with a ghost that haunts electronics. They could aid him in his engineering work while also being the kind that reminds him to take care of himself (messing with his stuff until he takes a break). They could also remind him of his younger self before he fully fell into who he is now. It's a cute pairing. (A joke of him and Palkia s/o lmao. Space god lover tells him to stop.)
Nanu with an Alolan Persian hybrid s/o, of course. Old man loves cats. Give him a cat hybrid lover and watch him find internal peace further.
Colress would probably be infatuated with any hybrid, honestly. A pokemon and human intertwined in such a way... This is certainly beneficial to his research. He is more than convinced. Though – unconsciously, he is inclined towards steel types. They are his speciality, after all. (Genesect s/o – make his own partner lmao.)
N, too, would love any kind of hybrid. He loves pokemon, and a human pokemon hybrid would be easier for him to understand. Though, perhaps, he is drawn to Zoroark hybrids for some unknown reason. Or other mammalian hybrids. Somewhere, he desires a certain warmth that other hybrids can't provide.
Volo would do terrible things to a Togekiss hybrid, probably. (Or perhaps a Giratina hybrid would do terrible things to him. Who knows.)

you know what they say: you win some, you lose some… you do stupid bullshit off-type clears on some…
1. “sync buffs more effective” round against lorelei. she had that stupid look alive passive skill this time so i needed something with piercing gaze (or equivalent) and settled on my good ol’ electric team. it may have been off-type, but it was a good clear. sorry i couldn’t use you this time, bea
2. “stat changes have greater effect” round against lance. with champ iris and alt leon this one was a no-brainer. they crushed everything in their paths, as expected, and hop’s crit-rate buffs helped iris quite a bit
3. “infinite field effects” round against bruno. first time using neo champ serena since i got her on saturday and it felt wicked good. sygna green and sygna kris make an excellent support combo, even if kris’s special defense buffing wasn’t really needed this time
4. “physical damage reduction” round against agatha. honestly i had no strat going in here so i scrounged up enough 5-star power-ups to EX fall morty… and it didn’t work out so great. which SUCKS because i really like him! after a few attempts i decided to cheese this one with flinch and freeze spam. red and lyra are awful together and i love it so much
5. “status condition buff” and “infinite field effects” round against green. i was so excited to use sygna hilbert for this but in a panic i took out the center ‘mon first, and the ally attacks knocked out genesect pretty brutally. so while hilbert got the win against green’s alakazam, it was actually sygna morty and aaron who teamed up to whittle the allies down to nothing. sygna morty continues to impress me tbh, i’m so glad i have him
and there you go! 12.5k clear once again. i should draw some of these combinations because i love them ^_^

On learning to love the way things fell part 9: putting things behind us
As expected, our target was still in the arena, and it was time to begin the heist. Beuregard was leading his staff the same way he always did, his Mr. Rime directing the water Phione swam through.
Brant’s job was to draw as much attention as he could, fortunately mythicals are rather apt for that. He and his Genesect worked away in what was less of a performance and more a chaotic mess that drew all attention to the center of the area. Beuregard retreated to the wall while the crowd above remained fixed on Brant. Now it was my turn to make a scene.
Bisharp kicked it off, being catapulted into the arena by Beheeyem’s psychic and planting a blade square in the face of Mr. Rime. Beheeyem and I were up next, lifting the Phione into the small tank on my back. It passed out instantly, the sleep powder mixed into the water working wonders. I left Beheeyem and Bisharp behind to cover me and took off.
Some of Beuregard’s staff gave chase out of the arena. Gardevoir cut them off a short distance behind me, using Double Team to flood the street with copies of herself and block any lines of sight. It worked better than expected. I was starting to get confident things would turn out okay. That feeling lasted right until I smacked face first into an invisible wall.
Beuregard’s Mr. Rime had been waiting for me, and I was now trapped by it’s screens. A familiar high pitched cry shook me out of my daze. It was Beuregard, carrying my barely breathing Beheeyem and wearing the emptiest expression I’d ever seen.
“Well done, I expected nothing less from one of Plasma’s finest.”
The box around me closed in.
“But I suppose you don’t have enough time for a nice chat do you? So why don’t you return my property?”
He picked up Beheeyem by the top of his head and shook him.
“Or you’ll learn why even Ghetsis was smart enough to never meddle in my affairs.”
He gripped tighter onto Beheeyem's head, laughing as I banged against the barriers.
“Don’t pretend to be worth more than you are. This wouldn’t be the first nor the third time I’ve started fresh. Nothing you can do to me will stick long enough to matter.”
As the dean gloated I noticed a spark of life in Beheeyem’s eyes. I motioned towards my pokeballs, mouthing Beuregard’s name at him. He used a soft pulse of power to click the button on Mr. Rime’s ball, withdrawing it. Beuregard seemed to think it was a technical glitch and sent him back out, not realizing that was exactly what I needed.
It’s ability kicked in, melting the barriers around me before it had a chance to warn its trainer. I withdrew Beheeyem from Beuregard’s clutches while Ditto took on his form, blasting Mr. Rime away with Signal Beams before using Wonder Room toggling to knock Beuregard off his feet.
Ditto pinned him there long enough for Brant to arrive and take him off our hands. We made our way to the hospital, and I collapsed as soon as the door closed behind me. We got the news not much later, it was everything we expected. Beuregard really had screwed up the discovery of a century. It wasn’t like he did this for some greater cause, it would’ve been comforting if his motivation was because he wanted to give it to Ghetsis. The fact that he didn’t need a real reason was what scared me the most.
Concordia had come out to the hospital to see things for herself, and joined me outside with my team once it was all over. We talked about neo plasma, Ghetsis, and how much more work there still was before today would be over. She pressed something into my hand and smiled, saying that at least now I wouldn't have to go at it alone. It was a Plasma Foundation crest, the mark of a full member.

Unit Teambuilding - Sygna Suit Hilbert
I still can't believe they gave him Genesect. Show of hands, how many of you expected Colress? I know I did.
General Overview Hilbert's a funny little dude. Metal Sound for special defense drops is pretty fun, but the big news is Techno Blast, a base 200BP move because Normal Type getting Bug Shifted. Now that's more interesting than Hyper Beam. Especially because his passives also allow it to be super-effective against Fire, Water, Electric, and Ice, due to the drives. Oh, and he lowers the rebuff rank of a foe hit by this the first time by 1. Still unclear if this counts HP bar shifts in Gauntlet, but assuming no. Still, having both rebuff and debuff abilities means Hilbert should be riding high, right?
Well, kinda. The good in Hilbert is that his DPS is insane. He’s top performer in almost every type he has access to. Granted, this is because of the rebuff effect and natural Supereffective Up Next, which skews things in his favor, but his damage is still really good. His sync nuke is also fantastic, being second place behind SC Ingo. He also has a bevy of support options, with his special defense debuffs and Rebuff debuff being his natural effects, and his grid offering tons of utility based on what type Techno Blast is. Paralysis for Electric to counter Tornadus, debuff attack for Fire to counter Cobalion, debuff defense to counter Entei and Moltres via an ally I guess, freeze chance for Ice to disrupt, and Bug potentially debuffing both special attack and special defense by 1 per attack, all in addition to Ripple Effect. Hilbert has some really fun options.
So what’s my beef with Hilbert? The short answer is: none of those technical abilities matter. They don’t accomplish much of anything, because his sync nuke is just...better in every scenario, and you can’t afford your fun tools if you take the sync multipliers. Hilbert’s a painful case of opportunity cost, having legitimately fun ideas behind his kit that ultimately boil down to “Just punch stuff really hard.” As a result, his kit feels lackluster, because he’s yet another Tech whose main focus is on DPS. And then you look at his DPS and go oh, this is not as good as it seems on paper.
Hilbert’s self setup takes forever. Four turns to buff offenses, wasting a use of Supereffective Up Next in the process. Three turns to debuff special defense of a foe. He has to attack first before the Rebuff is active, meaning SEUN is lost to set it up unless he starts with that action. When supporting at 1/5, keep in mind this is also a 4-bar move, which is hard to fit in with another high DPS ally. With eight turns of setup, it should be easy to see why I’m not as keen on SS Hilbert. Compare him to SS Hilda, whose setup is one turn long. He’s effectively wasting six turns of setup that Hilda’s using for DPS to end the fight outright. Hilbert can do similar, but only when he offloads setup to allies. Which means needing a special attack/crit buffer, and a special defense debuffer. That’s a really tall order. Those are rare and valuable support options that you’d rather be using for weak units like Clair in Gauntlet streaks, not your shiny new meta bug. You’d expect a bit more self-sufficiency. But Hilbert...doesn’t really have that. So while his listed numbers look good, they look good compared to allies who have an easier time setting up. As a result, SS Hilbert feels like a unit who is interesting, but functionally unnecessary.
Move Level and EX? 1/5 at least has the makings of a fun support, even if it’s locked to the special defense drops and Rebuff. And 200BP is really strong, so he’s probably fine as DPS that way too. 3/5 is when you get the fun support tools you can’t justify using because you also get his absurd Tech sync nuke. Exactly nothing interesting exists at 2/5, except for Bug Daunt, which is a cute way of trying to help Alder’s need for special attack debuffs I suppose. It’s not working.
Team 1: SS Hilbert, Lucian, BP Janine Pretty much no matter what you do, Lucian is Hilbert's best friend, thanks to special defense drops. In every scenario, Lucian is great. BP Janine, however, is a pretty useful support, giving him the needed speed buffs for gauge control, and Team Sharp Entry with a top-off on special attack. You do want Hilbert to use trainer move at least once, for the Supereffective Up Next condition.
Team 2: SS Hilbert, SS Brendan, Eevee Lyra/SS Red/NY!Volkner/SC Ingo SS Brendan is a wildly good Hilbert partner, accomplishing the needed buffing and special defense drops that Hilbert craves. Alongside this, you can bring other DPS partners for the type if 1/5, like Eevee Lyra, SS Red, or NY!Volkner, who appreciate the rebuff and debuffs, and are generally pretty solid on gauge control due to speed buffs. If Hilbert’s 3/5 and doing all the damage himself, your options are pretty open, but SC Ingo for Bug Zone is funny, and I don’t know if Hilbert’s Fire-type would be modified by Sun.
Team 3: SS Hilbert, Alder/Lusamine, Skyla/SC Lillie If you get Hilbert 1/5, and decide to use him for more technical fare, this is what you'd want to aim for, more or less. Meta Sound is a great debuff tool in Gauntlet, that allows Alder's stronger Hyper Beam to shred through opponents. Alternatively, Lusamine would appreciate the assist. Skyla can help Alder best, since he really just wants gauge support and to fix his broken defense drops, while Lusamine needs help with, like, everything, so SC Lillie's here to help, and wants Posthaste to help with gauges. Problem is I think 1/5 SS Hilbert dwarfs Lusamine's DPS regardless. Girl has not aged well since all these units with similar offensive stats came out packing several multipliers.
Final Thoughts Hilbert's kind of a sad case to me. I want to like him a lot, but any technical angle he could approach feels drastically overshadowed by the fact that his DPS is just better. Just sync nuke with him, bro. Just spam the 200BP move. It just feels like there's no room for inventive creativity in the perfected meta we have. He doesn't do anything all that...fun. He tries to. Oh my god, does he try. But because it's all locked to 3/5, there's never a scenario where it's better to aim for it than just raw damage.

Looking at the new pairs from the datamine :)
This is JUST looking at the kits, not necessarily stats or grids. Lots of techs this time around.
SS Hilda & Victini
She’s a physical fire striker again... Her moves seem pretty lackluster, but her self-buffing is where she shines. Max attack when entering battle, and then max crit rate and sp.atk after her Trainer Move. Recharging the move gauge after attacking is also nice to help off-set her 4-gauge move. I expect her grid will have nodes for increasing damage against burned and/or confused enemies.
I’ll be honest, I’m not a fan of Downside Up on units that already max their stats; I feel like Downside Up is more interesting as a scaling mechanic to increase a pair’s power as they use moves that would otherwise debuff them. At least on SS Steven, not all of his forms maxed his stats; but on SS Hilda, it just seems like it’s functioning as a slightly better Impervious.
SS Hilbert & Genesect
This is an... interesting way to incorporate Genesect’s forms. Basically: his attack move is bug type, unless the target is weak to fire, water, electric, or ice, in which case his move becomes that type. I saw people predicting Genesect’s forms being similar to SS Steven’s, where you choose which type you want at the beginning, but I think this is actually a smart way to let Genesect keep its Bug strength alongside the other types; the rebuffs and Supereffective Up on the Trainer Move are also nice touches. The major drawback to this pair is gauge usage and set up time, but the right team can off-set that easily, and I suspect he’ll some grid nodes to help.
SS N & Black Kyurem
This took me a bit to parse, but I think it’s interesting overall. You essentially just want to cycle between Freeze Shock and B Noble Roar, with Freeze Shock being a slow but powerful move with a relatively high chance of paralysis and B Noble debuffing the opponents, buffing yourself, and enabling more Freeze Shocks with Free Move Next. And if you don’t feel like doing that, then Ice Beam is there to freeze as well. Lowering the sync countdown by 2 is a decent way to offset the loss from Freeze Shock being a two turn move. I definitely don’t think this pair is for everyone (definitely not for me), but I think he’ll find a niche for Legendary Gauntlet.
Colress & Klinklang
My first thought is that this is an upgraded BP Clemont. I think it’s interesting that he can set up the debuffs he needs on the opponents, but requires his teammates to buff most of the stats he himself needs; somewhat reminiscent of his character in the games. A pretty straightforward pair compared to the previous ones: debuff the opponents and then attack.
Hugh & Bouffalant
I think this matches his character tbh. A somewhat self-sufficient recoil striker with a chance to remove recoil damage overall, and who heals before fainting the first time. Pretty straight forward I think. I like it. Not much else to say.
Lyra & Vaporeon
Love this for her actually. A support-ish tech with infinite rain using her sync. She’s mostly focused on heavily debuffing the enemy and improving team gauge with speed and low gauge moves. Even if she isn’t great at taking hits, that team wide Vigilance at base is nice. The only downside to her rain after sync is that it’s hard to get her sync in during the rain itself (similar to Silver’s issue with Solarize), but that’s minor. The most unfortunate thing is that she doesn’t appear to have an EX, which kind of sucks for a tech that really likes to sync.
Kris & Jolteon
Very similar to Lyra in being a tech with infinite zone after sync and decent team support; I expect Flareon will have Solarize at base. Kris’s less focused on debuffs though, and is predictably built for paralyzing opponents. Tbh, I feel like this kit is nothing special for an electric pair; the best she brings is Team Electric Current, aka a teamwide Impervious during Electric Terrain. Paralysis pairs are always good for Legendary Gauntlet though, so she won’t be bad to have on hand for that.
Lucas & Flareon
Yep, here’s the Solarize. Parallels the previous two pairs, but with a focus on burns. His TM is almost the inverse of Kris’s, boosting his own crit rate and raising the sp. atk of the team. I think he’s somewhere between Lyra and Kris in terms of usefulness. Nothing too special, but I can see him at least having use in the Stadium.
Elesa & Joltik
My hopes are dashed and my life is ruined.
Mostly kidding. Mostly. She doesn’t pair well with SC Ingo and Emmet at all. She’s mostly a self-sustaining support against and with Special Attack focused teams. Not super impressed with her kit honestly, but it seems in line with a lodge unit. Her team buffs aren’t super great, and it’s pretty unfortunate that she can’t buff her own self-healing, outside of maybe crit rate. Having Recuperation is kind of a wasted passive imo; there’s no real reason to sync with her otherwise. I would probably think better of her if she were a bug pair, but for an electric pair she’s pretty lackluster and can’t even paralysis. But who knows, maybe her grid saves her.

Ok, but like, I raise you... Fossil pokemon. Danny might not know what a pokemon is, but he sure knows an abomination against the nature of life and death when he sees one. And sure, maybe after a while (and several conversations with scientists and a weird looking cat who translated what these "pokemon" were saying) he's been able to accept the existence of like, Omanyte and Kabuto and all, but frickin arctovolt?!?! Nah, that thing's an amalgamation of wrongness and suffering and he must find whoever was responsible.
I'm envisioning Danny getting to Pewter City, finding the museum, and having an inciting incident for his trainer journey in the same town as the first gym by pure Fenton luck. Dude's got nothing but a group of really messed up blob ghosts (ghastly) who refuse to stop following him and insist on acting as guard dogs for him. At least the weird cat (and yes he does keep running into team rocket for some reason in each town) was able to explain what Bobby, Blobert, sir Blobberten the third, and Blob Dan were saying and how they would help him in these pokemon battles.
Because his buddies are so devoted, and maybe get some kind of boost from his Ecto, they proceed to absolutely steamroll the first gym, and only GAIN steam from there. And having already caught the attention of team rocket, Giovanni tries to recruit him (the guy has an eye for talent, and Danny clearly has that) only for the literal child to somehow sneak into a totally locked sub basement and release not one, not two, but three of his partially completed doomsday weapons that he was working on to take the world hostage.
Giovanni immediately retreats to his last resort bunker on the fricking moon, because he is not dealing with the combined fury of the released and not properly restrained Mewtwo, Giratina, and Genesect.
He didn't actually have to worry of course. Danny has a clone already, so he's able to bond with Mewtwo and talk him down pretty much immediately, especially once he shares GIW trauma and actually helps Mewtwo both direct his own trauma appropriately and take out said appropriately directed trauma on the various rocket Labs. Ok, maybe Giovanni was right to worry...
Giratina sees Danny as a more powerful ghost than him, but who's also being super friendly and supportive; he was even willing to bond by wrestling and put out enough Ecto in the process that Giratina can go origin form without the Griseous orb. Yeah, Giratina is ecstatic to be training under Danny, even if it does mean accepting the nickname "Gary" which he does NOT like, shut up!
As to Genesect, the Pokemon who's quite likely a kabutops covered in cybernetic armor based on the restraints for Mewtwo, how does he do with Danny? Well remember, Danny's whole reason for becoming a trainer was to help the fossils, and the one Gengar who stayed with him permanently explains that. Genesect is now Danny's ace. Gary and Matthew both swing by occasionally to say hi and maybe give a gym leader an unpleasant surprise when Danny throws them out in battles, but William (genesect » gene » genie » Robin Williams, keeps the reference to the Pokemon name while not limiting Genesect as just an experiment) sticks with Danny at all times and is an absolute fiend for scritches.
By the time the yearly master tournament rolls around, Danny is walking in with a team consisting of three legendaries, a mega Gengar, and two slots I'll take suggestions to fill. Can you tell my brain ran away with me on this one?
A friend has given me an AMAZING IDEA. Hear me out.
Danny fenton. In the Pokémon world. Going around meeting ghost type Pokémon.
IT WOULD BE AWESOME
Especially if he’s world hopping and is NOT used to pokémon
“OoOo this house is SUPER Haunted!”
(Finds what’s doing the haunting)
“…… that’s just a weird cat. Not even a ghost cat- it’s just weird”
I feel like all the ghost types would follow him around, he doesn’t have pokéballs or anything they just like him.
His Pokémon just dragging him around to do Trainer things and Danny just having no clue what going on like-
Some random kid challenges Danny to a Pokémon battle
Danny has no idea what that means but definitely does NOT want to beat some toddler into the ground and is trying to find a way out of this “Pokémon battle”
His Pokémon on the other hand will NOT stand for this DISRESPECT and promptly ignore Danny’s attempts to leave in order to DESTROY THIS CHILDS DREAMS

(askpokemoncrossover) Trigger @ Toto:
Amber stood there in amazement at how Toto defended herself against Saturn and was going to enter the fray when a familiar voice called out to her: “Hey, Amber!!” The shiny braixen spun around to see a Zeraora wearing a tank top with a number 104 was approaching her. “I finally found you and uh… what’s going on?” The zeraora asked her as he saw the fight between Toto and Saturn. Amber knew who it was: he was a friend of her brother, Sai. “Trigger? What are you...? Never mind, can you lend her a hand?” Amber asked Trigger as she pointed at the Mightyena. The zeraora’s eyes went from Sai’s sister to Toto and the Mewzelf before he grinned wickedly as if he was waiting for something like this. “Oh, I see what’s going on… It takes a legendary pokemon to stop another after all…” Trigger said as he slowly approached Saturn and Toto. “Hey miss! I don’t know what’s going on here, but it looks fun! Do you mind if I lend you a claw or two?” He asked the mightyena as his right hand suddenly became shrouded by a high concentration of electricity. Trigger then smiled and winked at Toto to let her know that he's not an enemy.
Toto: “I- I- I-” she stutters, tripping over the words that refuse to leave her mouth ‘are you seriously this pathethic toto? overwhelmed this easily’ she puts her paws over her ears with a whine, wanting everyone to just disappear. she doesn't wanna fight, she doesn't want anyone else to get involved, she doesn't want anyone to be upset over the fighting she doesn't want any of this as if in instinct, fae turns back into faer eevee form and curls up into a small ball of sad fur as if responding to her sorrow, the locket around her neck begins to glow in a soft light
a music box can be heard playing from inside. its song seemingly calming the eevee down and giving her a small smile.
“sorry about that, I can get overwhelmed by stuipid shit sometim-”
those are the only words she can get out before being grabbed, large hands warping around her body before throwing faer back with force before making impact, only one thing goes though her mind
not again.
[BANG] “GAH-”
toto’s body falls to the ground. the back of her head aching but her heart hurting much much more.

Who needs banned?
Of the new and returning Pokemon to OU, here is who I think should be banned or kept in OU with a bit of reasoning for each. I’m obviously not going to talk about something like Altaria, that’s kind of obvious. I’m just going to cover the Pokemon who were unbanned and the returning Pokemon who were once Uber. since this is a pretty long post, I’m just going to put the names here and then put a read more with my reasoning for each.
Needs Banned Immediately:
Genesect
Melmetal
Naganadel
Zygarde
Will Need to be Banned:
Cinderace
Kyurem-Black
Magearna
Tornadus-T
Can Stay in OU:
Blaziken
Glastrier
Landorus-I
Pheromosa
Spectrier
Needs Banned Immediately:
Genesect:
Genesect gets released into OU every generation and then gets rebanned in like a week or two. This generation shouldn’t be any different. This bug boy is still insane and just rips through Pokemon it shoulldn’t be able to. It does everything, and then some more. It has few reliable answers, and absolutely no reliable ones which can handle all of its sets. Please get rid of this thing as soon as possible.
Melmetal
MY BOYS BACK...and should probably be banned. I love this thing so much. I put it on every team I can and it always puts in so much work. It knocks out everything and tanks every hit thrown at it. Literally nothing takes more than a couple of hits from Melmetal and he just eviscerates Pokemon who are normally quite bulky. It has its checks, but its just so overwhelming for most teams that those checks become mandatory and restrict building. No matter how much it pains me to say it, he needs to go.
Naganadel
Beast Boost is one hell of an ability and now Naganadel gets Spikes! As if that wasn’t broken enough on Ash-Greninja last generation. It sets up and just blows everything apart. Just like in gen 7, Tyranitar is like the only thing that can check it and now Tyranitar is kind of horrible. Even though I love this thing almost as much as Melmetal, Naganadel also needs to go.
Zygarde
Zygarde is one of the scariest Pokemon in the tier right now. It sets up on everything with the sub-coil set and it breaks through everything with the Choice Band set. Its nearly impossible to deal with since common checks last generation like Tangrowth and Landorus lost HP Ice. We also don’t have Gliscor who could kind of handle it. Zygarde is a menace who terrifies me in game and in the team builder.
Will Need to be Banned:
Cinderace:
Cinderace is still an absolute menace in the tier. With the release of the 2nd DLC, a lot of offensive Pokemon were added, but not too many defensive ones. The only real major defensive threats are Landorus-T, Heatran, and Tapu Fini. Cinderace rips all three of these to shreds just like it did all of the other defensive walls the tier had before. The only way Cinderace got worse was the speed creep which came with the dlc, and Cinderace no longer outspeeds the entire meta-game. Even so, I still think that Cinderace has no hard counters and its checks are very limited. As such, it restricts team-building and should return to Ubers.
Kyurem-Black
Kyurem-Black is pretty much the same as Cinderace. It eviscerated the tier’s defensive checks and that hasn’t changed. Kyurem-B is worse at sweeping thanks to things like Melmetal, but it needs banned too. Kyurem-B is still incredibly good and needs banned. I would probably focus on some of the more broken Pokemon first, though.
Magearna
Again the same as Cinderace and Kyurem-B. Magearna was banned because there weren’t any defensive answers to it and nothing has changed. Sure Heatran is pretty great, but Magearna runs Focus Blast. It still sets up and still blows everything apart. The only reason Magearna doesn’t seem completely broken is because of broken Pokemon like Melmetal.
Tornadus-Therian
Tornadus is probably the most unassuming Pokemon on this list. Well Tornadus got a few new tools that make it absolutely broken. Tornadus has Heavy Duty Boots now, which makes the bulkier sets even better than they were last generation. That’s saying something because Tornadus was ridiculous. It also gets Nasty Plot now, making the offensive sets better than they ever have before. Tornadus hasn’t been popping up too much because everyone’s playing with the new toys, but I promise that once the dust settles and a few of the most broken Pokemon get banned, Tornadus will become overcentralizing. For context: it was banned in the national dex meta which is way more ridiculous than the normal meta because it has everything we have plus megas and z-moves.
Those that should stay in OU:
Blaziken
This might be the first generation since it got Speed Boost that Blaziken can stay in OU. Blaziken has one of the worst cases of four-moveslot-syndrome. It needs both of its stabs for obvious reasons, it needs Earthquake for Toxapex, it needs Knock Off for things like Latios, it needs Protect to get the Speed Boost against offense, and it needs Swords Dance to break against bulky teams. If you run the protect set, then you’re going to struggle against bulky teams and probably can’t break Toxapex. If you run the SD set, you’re near useless against offense due to Blaziken’s fragility. You’re also walled by the Lati twins who are really good this generation. I could see Blaziken needing banned in the future, but it certainly doesn’t need to be banned right now.
Glastrier
I’m only including Glastrier because its new. It has a good movepool and a solid attacking stat. But its so incredibly slow and has a terrible defensive typing. It’s insane on Trick Room teams, but its not great otherwise. Its no better than Stakataka.
Landorus-I
Landorus-I isn’t broken yet. And I mean yet because it will be. Losing HP Ice hurt, but I don’t think its enough to make it not broken. It will do what it does every generation. It’ll start off slow and then absolutely destroy the metagame once it settles down. It thrives in a metagame that is fairly uniform and consistent, but struggles in the early stages when it doesn’t know what to run. Give it like three months and this will need banned, but for now it can stay.
Pheromosa
I don’t think Pheromosa is all that good. It’s decent, but without Z-moves, it’s nowhere near what it once was. Close Combat was nice, but it certainly doesn’t make up for its faults. It just doesn’t hit hard enough without a Beast Boost in an attacking stat, and then its kind of slow with how insane the speed creep is. I could see it being broken in the future when a lot of the more broken stuff is gone, but for now it’s just kind-of average.
Spectrier
Spectrier is pretty cool. Pure ghost is always great and its got a pretty great stat spread....but that movepool is atrocious. I know we joke that ghost types only need to click Shadow Ball, but we didn’t mean it literally. The thing runs Mud Shot for gods sake. Its pretty strong and ghost is ridiculous, but it just can’t do enough on its own.
Things like the Tapus and the new galarian birds are good, but they aren’t near ban worthy. Tapu Lele may become suspect in like a year, though.
#pokemon#competitive pokemon#crown tundra#ou#i really hope people don't mind me mentioning the horses#if you think I should avoid them for the next few weeks please let me know

Pokemon Changes I’d Make
I’ve come up with some changes I would make for Pokemon after scouring the internet and because I had an idea of only numbering pokemon biological lines instead of each pokemon individually. 1) to save on numbers, and 2) I can put Pichu next to Pikachu without messing with the National Dex order which divides pokemon by region, so an entirely different system than mine, which divides by biological line in order of discovery of one of it’s members.
under the readmore, I will go through the list of most significant changes that I would make if I were in charge of pokemon
0) Numbering Pokemon by Family Line instead of Individually in Pokedex
Basically it’s what it says, it would look like this on paper:
001 = Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, Venusaur = Grass/Poison
002 = Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard = Fire/Flying
003 = Squirtle, Wartortle, Blastoise = Water/Steel
oh yeah, btw, Blastoise is Steel type because Duh (don’t care if Empoleon did it, Fire. Fighting. That is all.)
001 Bulbasaur Ivysaur Venusaur 002 Charmander Charmeleon Charizard 003 Squirtle Wartortle Blastoise 004 Caterpie Metapod Butterfree 005 Weedle Kakuna Beedrill 006 Pidgey Pidgeotto Pidgeot 007 Rattata Raticate 008 Spearow Fearow 009 Ekans Arbok 010 Pichu Pikachu Raichu....
So basically like this all, all the way down the list for each Pokefamily
1) Ditto, Mew and Mewtwo have the same numbered family line.
I know none evolve into the other and only Ditto can breed, but Mewtwo is canonically of the same dna as Mew. Mewtwo is a genetically modified singular unqiue instance of a Mew. Original games go so far as to straight up saw Mew gave birth to Mewtwo.
Ditto being related to Mew and Mewtwo genetically is also a strongly held fan theory that I believe in, and well, this is called the changes I’d make to Pokemon if I could, and this is what I’d do
(Though Ditto would of course be move ahead to end of the Main Kanto group to be with Mew, rather then moving Mew and Mewtwo back)
2) Nidoran (F) and Nidoran (M) are now a single pokemon called Nidoran.
Their gendered forms are now the same thing as Meowstics, with male and females having drastically different sprites.
I know that F and M Nido’s also have different moves and stats and that’s important to preserve, and I say, this is fine to keep as well. Pokemon change their stats, moves, typings, abilities, all the time for TEMPORARY forme changes, heck even held items. Rotom, Deoxys, Genesect, Burmy/Wormadam, Aegislash, Shaymin, Castform, fucking Cosplay Pikachu etc If those things can change for temporary forme changes, they can be different for permanent gendered forme changes like Nidoran. I don’t see any conflict there.
Then female Nidorans evolve into Nidorinas, and male Nidorans evolve into Nidorinos.
Also Nidorina’s and Nidoqueen’s can breed because it’s stupid that they can’t.
3) Male Miltank eggs just become Tauros.
There’s no reason for Miltank and Tauros to not work like Illumise and Volbeat. This is a biological dex also, so just like Illumise and Volbeat are considered the same biological family, so are Miltank and Tauros. Miltank appears with Tauros in it’s slot.
4) Plusle and Minun are a pair/in the same family group, and can produce eachother’s eggs, but not exactly determined by gender.
Two of the same type breeding will give a Plusle
So Plusle+Plusle or Minun+Minun = Plusle
Two of the opposite type breeding will give a Minun
So Plusle+Minun = Minun
They otherwise keep their gender ratios and breeding group, so they can also breed with other pokemon, and the baby will be of the mother as per usual rules.
5) Oranguru and Passimian also share biology, but also in a non gendered way like Plusle and Minun.
Basically, either can be male or female and can breed with other pokemon, and have children based on the mother in the usual way.
But if an Oranguru and Passimian breed together, no matter which is female, If the offspring has higher attack than special attack, it becomes a Passimian. If it has higher special attack than attack, it becomes an Oranguru.
This is partly because I think it made sense given their lore and designs, and also because I thought it’d be a neat throwback to the gender determination system of the original crystal game, but in this case it determines species/abilities/lore etc
then if the attack and special attack tie, it just becomes whoever the mother was as normal.
6) Sigilyph gets demoted from being a unique pokemon, to merely a Forme change of Unown, akin to Wishiwashi’s schooling forme, but different.
I never really liked the idea of Unown evolving, but also knew it was related to Sigilyph, somehow, just didn’t really know how.
then Sun/Moon came along and along came Wishiwashi and it’s unique forme type. With the way Unown have always been portrayed to always school together like that just like in the Entei Movie, it was perfect!
When an Unown is at low health, in order to protect itself, many more Unown school together around it and psychically merge itself into a stronger being, in order to fight off the attacker.
So unlike Wishiwashi who starts out as many and weakens to being a single one, Unown starts out single, and upon a suitable threat, psychically calls upon its brethren for help as a last ditch resort. Unown also warp reality itself as they please, so it’s not outlandish to say a bunch of them could merge themselves together into a single temporary physical forme.
So thus the name Sigilyph is forever removed. It’s model just becomes a Guardian forme Unown.
7) Phione also loses it’s name/gets demoted to being a forme change of Manaphy like Sigilyph.
The Phione sprite/model is simply the Warm Seas forme of Manaphy, while the OG Manaphy sprite/model is now the Cold Seas forme.
There’s no reason why it couldn’t have been this in the first place. Phione has no reason to be a separate pokemon from Manaphy, it just doesn’t.
How it changes forme in-game can have something to do with the weather/terrain changes because idc.
8) Carbink evolves into Diancie.
This one, I’m unsure if I should remove Diancie from being legendary, or just make it so the item that evolves Carbink into Diancie is a one use only key item and you can’t get more/trade more/use it again.
But it’s one of the two, I think the one use key item is probably best though. No legendary deserves to be demoted (excepy Phione, but its fine because I merged it with Manaphy) and to keep Dianice special, the item must only be able to be used once, can’t get traded another one by any means.
9) Adjustments to pokemon evolution lines:
I have no justification for these other than I want them. Nothing crazy, just sticking some lines together, you may or may not disagree, this is fine also.
Dusnparce evolves into Drampa.
Linoone evolves into Zangoose.
Arbok evolves into Seviper.
Luvdisc evolves into Alomomola.
Minior evolves into either Solrock or Lunatone by Sun/Moonstone of course.
All Eevee evo’s are by evolution Stone
Flareon - Fire Stone
Jolteon - Thunder Stone
Vaporeon - Water Stone
Espeon - Sun (Dawn) Stone (Really these should just be the same Sun stone..)
Umbreon - Moon (Dusk) Stone (ditto as above. but Moon stone)
Glaceon - Ice Stone
Leafeon - Leaf Stone
Sylveon - Shiny Stone
10) And then, Pokemon Type Matchup changes.
This should probably be it’s own post, but fuck it, I can give the quick rundown
Rock and Ground type get merged into a single Earth type.
Sound type gets introduced to keep same number of types and because it’s long past due.
All type colors are as follows:
All other types get some re balancing in terms of type matchups
So, each type has 6 factors:
A type that they are good at attacking (Effective), bad at attacking (Futile), and totally ineffective towards (Useless)
and, types that they are good at defending against (Resist), bad at defending against (Weak), and totally immune to (Immune)
I re-balanced each type to make sure they have no more than 5 in each of those categories, without changing what made each type so unique and useful (attempting anyways) but it was easy enough, it was really more about removing extraneous resistances that didn’t really need to exist, which naturally removed a lot of ineffectivess, and then splattering a few actual effectives around.
Does this unintentionally make some types stronger purely because they have high base stat attacking moves?
Yes. but that problem shouldn't be solved by making types weaker, it should be solved by giving all the types effective attacking options. That way, all the types feel good and effective to use. I think it’s better that way, especially because it encourages the system of “using your favorite pokemon to win” and giving a lot more equally viable options for battle, instead of having a small few stand out from the crowd and trample everyone.
First I’ll explain Earth and Sound as they are new:
Earth Type is This:
Effective: Fire, Electric, Poison, Sound
Futile: Grass, Earth, Bug
Useless: Flying
Resist: Fire, Poison, Earth, Sound
Weak: Water, Grass, Steel, Ice
Immune: Electric
Earth is Ground and Rock combined (more like Rock enfolded into Ground but eh, some parts of Rock are still there)
Earth pretty much takes Ground’s strengths at attacking/defending, but takes Rock’s weakness against Steel. The thought being “Well, I had to merge them somehow, Ground is very powerful and needs some balance, need a good weakness, and the idea of a shovel shoveling Earth and tearing it up with manmade tools seemed to make sense”
kept the immunities and uselessness to keep that balance intact, removed references to Normal and Fighting since Fighting has nothing to do with Earth really, and Normal types often live/burrow in the ground so could be good or bad.
Gave an effectiveness against Sound since the earth absorbs soundwaves and weakens them.
Sound Type is This:
Effective: Flying, Steel, Psychic
Futile: Earth, Water, Grass
Useless: Sound
Resist: Flying, Steel, Psychic
Weak: Earth, Water, Grass
Immune: Sound
Sound is interesting and a bit unique, due to it’s ephemeral nature, the types it is effective against, are also the types that it naturally resists. As are the types it is ineffective against, are also the types it is weak to
Sound travels best through the Air, Flying is here standing in as an “Air/Wind” type, and the idea is that Sound powerful enough to attack just CUTS right through Flying types.
Sound is amplified by echoes, but Steel is especially prone to that, Steel basically helpless to do anything except amplify Sound, strengthening it, but just like vibrations strong enough to maim, are strong enough to shatter, the things that echo the loudest are also the things most prone to being torn apart by vibrations.
and then Psychic is simply because of how Sound is the number one way to interrupt concentration, and no amount of mental prowess can fight against that. It fits into Psychic’s weakness all being common fears, by screaming being the most common response associated with fear, and also sudden loud jumpscare noises.
Sound is weak to Water, Earth and Grass, and also is Futile against them for similar reasons across the board, bodies of water, wood, ground, boulders etc all absorb and disperse soundwaves very well without damaging themselves, unlike Steel which amplifies Sound.
Then finally, Sound is totally immune to, and useless against, itself. Sound is Sound is Sound. If there’s loud things happening, more loud things just add to the chaos and the volume. Sound cannot overpower itself, only add to it’s own strength.
The Pokemon that were Rock/Ground are now Pure Earth type, those that were Type/Rock or Type/Ground are now Type/Earth. Other than those conversions no changes were made to make something Earth type that wasn’t already once Rock or Ground type.
As for Sound type, something to make note of, is that “Sound” encompasses more an idea of “Music” or “Rhythm” where both singing and dancing but also shockwave and vibration are encompassed into “Sound” type, to allow for a base in both special and physical moves, and to encompass all expression of Noise.
So, the following are now Pure Sound Types:
Whismur, Loudred, Exploud
Spinda
Chingling, Chimecho
Audino
Cincinno, Mincinno
Eevee evolution that’s pure Sound, Probably Melodeon or Vocaleon or Harmoneon (Evolves upon using Noise Stone)
The Following are Primarily Sound type with a secondary Typing:
Igglybugg, Jigglypuff, Wigglytuff = Sound/Fairy
Ludicolo = Sound/Grass (Noise Stone, not Water Stone)
Kricketot, Kricketune = Sound/Bug
Chatot = Sound/Flying
Woobat, Swoobat = Sound/Flying
Meloetta = Sound/Psychic or Fighting
Noibat, Noivern = Sound/Dragon
Pikipek, Trumbeak, Toucannon = Sound/Flying
Jangmo-o, Hakamo-o, Kommo-o = Sound/Fighting
and then the following are Primarily one type, but with a secondary Sound type:
Bellosom = Grass/Sound (Noise Stone, not Sun Stone)
Politoed = Water/Sound (Noise Stone, not king’s rock)
Voltorb, Electrode = Electric/Sound
Happiny, Chansey, Blissey = Normal/Sound
Munchlax, Snorlax = Normal/Sound
Yanma, Yanmega = Bug/Sound
Misdreavus, Mismagius = Ghost/Sound
Snubbull, Granbull = Fairy/Sound
Poochyena, Mightyena = Dark/Sound
Ludicolo = Grass/Sound (Noise Stone)
Ralts, Kirlia, Gardevoir = Psychic/Sound
Skitty, Delcatty = Normal/Sound (Noise Stone, not Moonstone)
Electrike, Manectric = Electric/Sound
Wailmer, Wailord = Water/Sound
Spoink, Grumpig = Psychic/Sound
Vibrava, Flygon = Earth/Sound
Bronzor, Bronzong = Metal/Sound
Tympole, Seismotoad, Palpitoad = Water/Sound
Maractus = Grass/Sound
Klink, Klang, Kinklang = Metal/Sound
Litleo, Pyroar = Fire/Sound
Primarina = Water/Sound
Oricorio = Fire or Psychic or Electric or Ghost/Sound
As for the balanced type matchup, you can see them all in this picture here:
you read it like the Type on the left is attacking the Type at the top
so, Fire (Left) attacks Bug (Top) and it’s green! So Super Effective and etc.
I won’t explain it all, because I feel like the chart is pretty self explanatory
aaaand, I think that’s all the changes I’d make to Pokemon itself.
I might come up with more later, but these are thing I want to see in Pokemon

Thank you, Sun and Moon
I know I'm a day early with this, but I wanted to get this out while I was still motivated. So, here we go.
To give an idea of what the Pokemon Sun and Moon anime means to me, let me start by going into my history with the anime.
I started watching Pokemon since the day it first aired in the UK. Back then, i remember Pokemon feeling like it was the biggest thing in the world, and for me it remained that way as i grew up.
I followed the show through the original series, Advanced Generation to well into Diamond and Pearl, and I always loved it. It was a constant presence in my life, and while I don't think I usually called it my number 1 favourite show, it was something I cherished and enjoyed more than most others. And at the time I was watching Diamond and Pearl and finding it possibly the best season yet, I was convinced I'd be following the series for pretty much the rest of my life.
And then, somewhere halfway through DP, something odd happened... I started missing episodes.
Like, id missed an episode of the series once in a blue moon due to extraneous circumstances, but I never actually took a break from watching the show, even when it was in reruns.
And yet for some reason, for a couple months, I couldn't be bothered to keep up with the anime. I'd later sum up that I was feeling burn out, but it felt odd how I'd just randomly seemed to lose interest when I'd been really enjoying Diamond and Pearl up until then.
Eventually I did start watching newer episodes again, but the same thing happened during the league arc, of which I only remember reading summaries on bulbapedia and only actually caught the last battle against Tobias. Something which... kinda bothered me. Not to a great deal at first, but the aftertaste felt more and more sour when I started watching the next series, Best Wishes.
I'll say right now, this is where I really started to question the quality of the Pokemon anime. I stopped watching the series after the dub got a few episodes past where the cancelled Team Rocket vs Team Plasma two parter would have aired. I did keep following plot summaries and checking new episodes pages on bulbapedia for a while, but that eventually lessened as I came to a realization.
The story was going nowhere. The show was just running in circles and making excuses to keep Ash's journey going in perpetuity.
I suppose maybe that should have been obvious already, but up through Diamond and Pearl, for all it's own backtracking, it still felt like Ash's journey was progressing and that the show itself was evolving and getting better in a number of ways. That we really were getting closer to seeing Ash becoming a master.
But between Tobias randomly being thrown into the league to eliminate Ash in a really lazy manner that felt unnatural compared to the last two times he'd lost a league, and a lot of the blatant bad writing decisions I was seeing like Zekrom showing up out of nowhere to nerf Pikachu so it could lose to Trip's Snivy, it really made me question where the story was going... if the show was even trying to tell a consistent story anymore, and they weren't just spinning their wheels and repeating the same patterns over and over again with no sign of ending or really moving forward.
At this same time I'd also been looking into the production history of the show and seeing what other people were saying about the anime online. I learned the show was originally supposed to end with Kanto and Ash winning the league, and I began looking back and noticing all the dropped plot points and mishandled story moments.
The GS ball plot never being resolved properly, the stuff with Ho-oh in Johto amounting to pretty much nothing, the mishandling of the Team Aqua and Magma plot, and a bunch of other things that made me realize...
This show is kind of a mess. There really isn't any kind of a plan or an end point. They're going to keep forcing Ash to lose at the league, reset his progress and keep running in circles because they don't want to do what Digimon and Yu-gi-oh did and let the story end and getting a new protagonist.
Needless to say, this coming at a rough time in my life where I was pretty miserable and becoming increasingly cynical with the world as well as more critical of media I watched, and in conjunction with what I saw people were saying about the show, left me feeling VERY disillusioned with the Pokemon anime.
Because I loved Pokemon, I thought it was the greatest franchise in the world and it had infinite potential. Surely, the anime should be better than this. Surely, Pokemon deserved better. SURELY, it should have been a great show for all ages like Shudo wanted it to be, and not some cheap commercial for the games?
I think the thing that broke me completely was Newtwo in the Genesect movie, because the anime's original take on Mewtwo is one of my favourite fictional characters of all time, and his story through his movie, Mewtwo returns and the birth of Mewtwo short and radio drama was what younger me had always thought represented how great Pokemon could be at it's best, and that the series was something meaningful...
And here OLM were giving us a boring copy of that character minus the nuance.
Did they even care, I thought? Was I just stupid for liking the anime as much as I did for so long? Was it even worth hoping things could get better?
By the time it was into XY, I had given up on the Pokemon anime and become disillusioned with it as a whole, spending the next few years bitter and pining over a better version of the series that only seemed to exist in my mind. I didn't even bother to keep up with reading about new episodes on Bulbapedia anymore, I didn't have a clue what was going on. And I was sure I didn't care, and I never would again.
What reason was there to be invested in a series that clearly had no faith in itself, and certainly no regard for people like me who had had faith in it and wanted a good story.
I did start listening in again towards the end of XYZ when i kept seeing so many people gushing about how great it was and how competent Ash had supposedly become. For a minute i almost got caught up in the hype that he might win the Kalos league, and that the writers had finally learned their lesson.
And then Ash lost.
I remember shrugging my shoulders and going "oh well" and then moving on with my life. I didn't even feel mad, I'd already resigned myself to what the outcome would most likely be, so what was the point in getting worked up when I don't even care about the show at all, right?
... Right?
I still remember the tepid reactions the trailer and announcements for the Sun and Moon anime got at this time. I'll admit, when I first heard the premise would involve Ash going to school I laughed and thought it was a stupid idea.
... but watching the various announcements and teasers for the show, something about it... intrigued me. I watched the first 5 episodes shortly after they aired and found myself enjoying them, but after that I got a bit distracted and didn't watch any more of it for a while.
A similar thing actually happened with XY, where despite my frustration at that point I did try to give the series a chance, but I quickly got bored, dropped it and stopped paying attention to the show as a whole until much later.
But unlike back then, I actually did pay attention to what was going on in the show, and what I was hearing did sound generally optimistic. I think it was a mix of the 20th movie coming up and the announcement of the Kanto two parter that convinced me to really sit down and watch the whole thing. And what I saw... was pretty darn good, I must say.
I was surprised with myself. I'd given up on the show, hadn't I? All the damage was already done, wasn't it? No matter what Sun and Moon did to shake things up, the show as a whole would still be inevitably tied down by it's status quo in the end, and nothing that happened here would matter or mean anything come the next series, right?
And yet, here I was. Having a good time and finding Pokemon Sun and Moon a pretty fun series overall. And I started to realize how much... just how much I'd missed the anime. How despite my insistence that I'd moved on and didn't care anymore... I never really had. I still wanted to love the series.
From that point on I kept watching Sun and Moon on a weekly basis, and eventually re-watched the entire series from start to finish, including everything I hadn't seen from BW and XY.
Slowly over time, my resentment and bitterness started to subside. For while so many of my problems with the show remained, I realized I could still have fun with it even though it wasn't perfect.
It felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders.
I won't pretend Sun and Moon was a perfect series. It had it's dull episodes and missed opportunities, just like all the series that came before it. There was plenty of stuff I thought could be better... and yet, the show never felt like it got bad or stopped being overall enjoyable despite those occasional gripes.
It didn't so much feel like the writers were just repeating all the same formulas and going through the motions anymore with Sun and Moon. There was a sense of fun to the show, a consistent level of joy and quality and, dare I say, PASSION to the series that I appreciated and kept me coming back to it.
And when the show was in top form, it honestly blew me away at times. I'll never forget the feeling of watching episode 108 and the scenes with Mallow reuniting with the spirit of her mother and thinking to myself "... THIS is a real episode of the Pokemon anime?"
I was happy. For the first time in so long, I felt content with the anime and not embarrassed to like it. But even then, I was thinking I'd have to like the show in spite of it's gaping, frustrating faults. I never dreamed the show or the writers would have the courage to break the dreaded cycles that pushed me away from it in the first place.
And then, only a few weeks ago now, the unthinkable happened... Ash Ketchum won the Alola league.
I'm still gobsmacked by it, honestly. I literally didn't think I was going to live to see the day. I'd resigned to the thought that the writers would always force him to lose... but against all my expectations, he did it. Ash won a pokemon league from the games.
And then just to really seal the deal, they even let him beat Kukui, a champion equivalent trainer, AND Tapu Koko right after that. Something that I never would have thought was possible to see happen in the Pokemon anime.
Honestly, watching that four parter, it felt like if you swapped out Kukui and Tapu Koko with Lance and Ho-oh, that could have been the ending I always thought the original series should have had... and it was GLORIOUS.
So now I'm sitting here, eagerly looking forward to the next series and feeling captivated by it's all regions premise and deviations from the formulas we'd come to expect as the eternal standard for this show, and I can hardly contain my excitement.
Because for the first time in a long time, Ash was finally allowed to achieve something extraordinary besides the obligatory "save the world from the current gen's villains" plot. For the first time since Diamond and Pearl, it feels like the story is actually moving forward into the next phase and the show is evolving.
For the first time in a long, long time... I look forward to the future of this series.
I could go on. There's plenty more I could say about Sun and Moon as a whole, discussing it's story, the characters and the writing, but... Honestly, there'll be plenty of time for that in the future. And for now, I feel like ive said all I needed to say.
At the end of the day, looking back on it all, I don't actually know if I'd call Sun and Moon my favourite Pokemon series. There's things about the Advanced Generation and Diamond and Pearl I liked more.
But Sun and Moon is, without a doubt, the Pokemon series I'm the most grateful for.
So, without further ado...
Thank you, Sun and Moon. Thank you for being a fun, charming, wholesome kids show.
Thank you for being entertaining and a joy to watch these past few years.
Thank you for being creative and not completely repetitive.
Thank you for fulfilling a childhood dream of mine I never thought could come true.
Thank you for helping Pokemon to evolve and move on to a new era.
Thank you, Pokemon Sun and Moon... for restoring my faith in the Pokemon anime.
Though I'm sure there'll be many ups and downs in the future, I swear I'm going to stick with this show until one of us kicks the bucket. And I'm content with that now.
It's late and I should go to bed. Hope the final episode tomorrow is a good one.

Yikes. Looks like back to Cheren’s house again. Hugh’s been tossing the thought around in his head about Victini-- he had asked, so it’s entirely on him... he honestly doesn’t know how he feels about it all. Of course, on some levels, he’d adore to have the strength of a Legendary Pokemon...
But he’s spoken to Axel. He’s seen what it’s done to Touya. He’s seen the effects a Legendary has on people-- Nate was practically unapproachable for months after he got Genesect, simply because they viewed everyone as a threat. Axel’s told him about what happens to Lucas when he gets parts of Dialga-- that amount of blood can’t possibly be healthy?-- and of course... Touya. Getting stuck with his Legendary for twelve years, and coming out nothing like he used to be.
Does he want a Legendary? Or does he simply idolize the power he’d gain from it? What worth is that? He’s not one for hoarding power, and he hates the idea of becoming like Ghetsis. A disgusting man who builds up his power and then releases it to manipulate and hurt the masses. No. He can’t be like that.
So does he want a Legendary?
The question continues to prey on his mind as he walks to Cheren’s. On some levels, he hopes Victini made their way here easily, and perhaps that Touya took them on, maybe to see what it might do, how it might help him get better control over himself, however he still has that tiny thought in the back of his head hoping that Victini has left for good.
Maybe he doesn’t want to fall into the temptation of having a Legendary. Of course it’s a constant call in his head. Of course he’d want power, power enough to protect his friends, to fight against people who threatened what he stood for, to--
“Try and prove you’re worthy of being their son.”
Hugh jumps, and looks around quickly, trying to find the source of the voice. In his deep thought, he completely failed to notice the ringing in his ear. At first, Hugh’s going to talk back at it, wherever and whatever it is, but instead, he fails to get even a single word out. Instead, he simply closes his mouth, and huffs, before continuing to walk.
So what if he’s still caught up on that? It comes back to haunt him every few months. He wonders, waits, hopes that anything he’s done has caught his family’s attention, and they’re willing to at least apologise for what they did to him.
“No closure on such a big wound, huh?”
“Shut it.” he snaps, and one hand balls into a fist. “Or I’ll make you.”
He can almost tell it’s Victini, and it’s just raised its eyebrows at him. Or... whatever eyebrows it has. He doesn’t care.
Hugh thinks its unfair. His friends didn’t get kicked out by their family for being themselves, shamelessly-- except Axel, but what else do you expect from a mother like that-- Nate and Rosa had both been able to stay in their houses, hell, he’s sure Cheren would have been able to, had he returned to Nuvema instead of settling into Aspertia. His parents probably assisted with the money so he could buy a house. And yet... he had been kicked out. He’d been homeless for three months, and had relied on a chance meeting with Nate, and his mother was kind enough to let him stay.
Is that all he’d want a Legendary for? To see if that would finally be the reason his family would pay attention to him? Shit, all he wants is an apology, or at least a passing recognition that he exists! Is pain and suffering like his friends feel worth that?
“Maybe it’s something else.”
“I said shut it.”
It could be, though. What would it be? Why’s he so focused on family? Why’s he got to care? He’s got his friends, he’s got Axel, he’s got his Pokemon, and a job-- what’s more to care about? Why is he so focused on family?
“Maybe you want one.”
That catches him off guard. Victini finally appears in front of him, with a much more serious look on its face. While Hugh seems to look at it, it hovers a little, with its hands somewhat near where its hips are. Or, where Hugh assumes its hips are?
“That’s it, isn’t it? This isn’t about proving yourself anymore, is it? You’re busy thinking about family because you want one.”
Hugh takes a few moments, looking between Victini, and the path forwards to Cheren’s house. Eventually, he closes his eyes, and pushes onwards. Victini flies out of his way, and continues hovering where it is.
Of course it knows what he’s thinking. He knows it can hear him when he speaks, too.
“Well... yeah." Hugh lowers his voice, looking down at the concrete below his feet. "But I won’t say it.”
Not... yet, anyway. First off he just wants Victini away from him, since clearly it’s just going to keep reading his thoughts.
“You have to, sometime soon.”

Pokémon Black 2 Randomized Nuzlocke Run [Part 10]
Elite Four grind time.
With some time spent pushing rocks into holes, just in case I need to go places in the future.
Team:
Caspet (Gengar)
Nessy (Milotic)
Diego (Gardevoir)
Stormy (Metagross)
Vertex (Luxray)
Photon (Rayquaza)
So here we are, leveling up our team before our chaotic last stand, and that means... we’re in a new route. One more for the road.
What will it be?
It’s a Fire type!
I’m a moron!
No, Diego, no.
...
FUCK I HAD A MASTER BALL I COULD HAVE USED.
WHY DOES MY BRAIN CONSISTENTLY GO TO THE “yeah there could be a type problem but I’m sure it’ll be fine,” ARENA WHEN I’M TRYING TO CATCH THINGS. YOUR OPTIMISM IS KILLING THIS TEAM. KILLING IT.
IT’S CAUGHT ANYWAY.
I GUESS THE LITTLE MURDERER WHO’S LIKELY TO BE PART OF THE TEAM GETS A NAME.
YOU’RE DAMIAN. IN ALL CAPS.
I’m so sorry my optimism killed you, Diego.
I have a Dawn Stone now.
Maybe things would have gone better if I had it earlier.
I might be sorrier I have to grind something else. But I’m mostly just sorry.
-sigh-
Rest well, friend.
Now then.
Hey there. You’re Serious and often doze off.
I guess I’ll train you now.
We’ll be back when the demon child is up to 60!
Or when I’m in his patch of grass again and cool, Sunflora and Manaphy. Mareep is in more common grass. As is Rhyhorn and Manectric. Ninjask in the water. Look, the wild one live longer. Braviary is occasionally here too, with Marill in the deep spots.
Heeeeey, DAMIAN made it to 60 without dying! Also without anyone else dying! Nifty! We’re throwing Caspet back in front, handing the Exp. Share to Photon for now, and just going to go through this Victory Road.
What I assume to be Victory Road. This part of the game blends together for me even worse than the rest.
...Well, now I’m on it, so no matter!
Wait. We had a planned thing?
N, this is why there’s so much fanfic written about you. Thank you, friend. Even if it’s only because I remind you of your boyfriend from the last cartridge set.
What do I teach it to, though? It’s a physical Water attack. A very good one, but I don’t think any of my physical attackers can learn it. I might have to take something out of a box for it... In that case, I might as well also get something that can learn Cut. There are trees about.
Photon and Nessy are the only ones that can learn Waterfall. I don’t think I want it for either of them. To the nearest box!
I don’t know if this is a way to a box, but this is really, really cool and I dig it.
Okay, do I have anything that can learn both Cut and Waterfall? Mayhaps? Or Fly?
No, this isn’t going to be that straightforward. Nessy and Caspet are in the box since they need exp least. Replacing them temporarily are Amuro the Charmander (Cut), and Winn the Whiscash (Waterfall and Surf).
Photon’s in the first slot, Exp. Share moves to Vertex for now.
There’s this maze of Cuttable trees and trainers out before Victory Road proper. I don’t really understand what this gen likes so much about random maze areas, but I think most Pokemon games are into that on some level. It’s just annoying right now because Sun and Moon spoiled me. HMs are obnoxious.
On a related note, Winn now knows Strength.
There are also now Kabutops everywhere.
Having gone through the maze, I’m going down Victory Road with Nessy back in the party and Amuro back in the box. Thanks for your service, bud. Where we’re going, we don’t need Cut. ...I hope.
This gen’s needless drama makes me happy.
And the first pokemon of Victory Road is...!
Hi there. You’re gen appropriate. What are you doing here.
Quick Ball for a quick catch, and your name’s Kansas now. Get in the box.
Other possibilities that can no longer be counted as such are Lickilicky, Psyduck, more Psyduck, Aggron, Spheal, Smeargle, Dragonite, Dewott, Starly, Zweilous, Trapinch, Marill, Swellow, Mismagius, Weavile, Genesect... there were a lot.
Throwing the Exp. Share at DAMIAN for the now.
We’re secretly the same person.
The number of trainers on Victory Road who have history with Team Plasma one way or another is really satisfying. In this sequel game, the events of the game preceding it had an impact on NPCs. Delightful.
Also, I repeat my desire for NPCs to not be allowed to have things that have Sturdy. I hate Sturdy. It makes me sad. So do caves that need Flash to see in. Instead of teaching anything Flash, I’m going to stumble around in the dark. The dark that says this is probably an optional section.
I made my way to an outside!
Hmmm.
Russell?
Russell!
Fuck. Rival fights just when I’m really wanting to see a Pokemon Center are not my favorite thing. They are even less of my favorite thing when I have a slot taken up by an HM slave.
!!!
Hey, this is the rival fight that starts with an Unfezant in this corridor!
It’s level 55, and Russell only has four pokemon, so this should be relatively okay. Bouffalant comes out as a result of Unfezant’s U-turn. Nessy deals with it, but is in the orange. Simisage is next, go DAMIAN. Samurott following, go Vertex. Samurott is level 57. Stormy goes in to finish the Unfezant since Stormy has a Quick Attack replacement.
And that’s the fight! Yay!
Pokemon Center?
Fine, I can take the Thunderbolt TM I guess.
Geez, what happened in the past two years, huh?
Oki doki, I’m going to go back through Victory Road and check out all the things I didn’t want to before finding the health point on the way out. When I’m done with that, I’ll look at the resting levels and decide what I think.
Stormy with the Exp. Share for the moment.
The heck.
Am I going to want to give something Flash?
Randomizer is fun.
Now then. What are you gonna do?
Nothing. Well great.
That kind of leaves with one thing to do, doesn’t it.
Yeah.
Soooo.
I think based on the levels I’ve been up against to get here, continuing to grind kind of defeats the spirit of the Nuzlocke. I also don’t have Fly, so I’m going to stick with what I have available here to construct team improvements.
To the TM page.
Nessy’s going to forget Twister for Ice Beam.
Photon’s going to... actually no.
DAMIAN’s ditching Crunch for Toxic just so someone knows it.
And that’s it for TMs that I could change up their movesets with.
Leftovers for Nessy, Magnet for Vertex, Wide Lens for Stormy, Charcoal for DAMIAN, Spell Tag for Caspet, and Razor Claw for Photon.
Going to spend most of my money on recovery items, and then. In we’ll go.
After giving Caspet all of my remaining Rare Candy. Caspet it level 69. Nice.
I think Fighting dude is to the far right. He’s been a problem in the past, so I’m going to go ahead and try to get that out of the way. Stormy up front because while Photon might have Air Slash and STAB, all these things are likely to have Stone Edge. The worst of everything. Next to Sturdy.
Yeehaw.
...Huh.
Well then.
So Marshal’s first pokemon is a level 56 Throh. At the risk of feeling very embarrassed in a few moments, I think I might be slightly overleveled for this. Uh. Stormy, use Zen Headbutt?
Bye Throh?
Mienshao is up next, and for that one I think I want to switch into Photon. Or do I. See, I can’t remember if Bug is super effective against Stormy or not. Steel clears up a lot of the Pyschic weaknesses, but I am not allowed to look things up, and gaaah.
Stormy can survive one hit of anything, probably. In Stormy stays.
One Zen Headbutt later, Stormy is also staying in to fight Conkeldurr. It’s level 58. It uses Bulk Up (yes, it lived. its berry even brought it back to orange!). Stormy uses Zen Headbutt. Conkeldurr is no more.
Next and last is Sawk. Let me guess. This is still the Sturdy version. It is. It uses Payback, which does a pathetic amount of damage. Stormy uses Bullet Punch to simplify the future, and Marshal Full Restores Sawk. Stormy uses Zen Headbutt.
Yay, I won.
...This is sincerely awkward. I thought they’d be in their 60s. And maybe they are for the second round, but I’ve spent so many hours in this gen that my plan is to call it after beating the Elite Four. So uh. This is my final battle.
To the Psychic room?
I like how two years later, the Elite Four has agreed to stairs instead of moving spiral stairs.
Caspet is up in front.
Caitlin sends out a level 56 Musharna. Caspet uses Shadow Ball. Musharna faints. Caitlin sends in a level 56 Reuniclus. Caspet uses Shadow Ball. Reuniclus faints. Caitlin sends in Sigilyph. Caspet uses Shadow Ball. Sigilyph faints. Caitlin sends in a level 58 Gothitelle. Caspet uses Shadow Ball.
And that’s Caitlin.
Ghost girl next because I already have Caspet up front.
Shauntal sends out a level 56 Cofagrigus. Caspet uses Shadow Ball. She’s about to send out a Golurk, and to keep from being too arrogant, I switch to Nessy. Nessy uses Surf. Bye Golurk. She sends out a Drifblim, I go back to Caspet. Caspet uses Shadow Ball. Nessy gets sent back in against a level 58 Chandelure. Nessy uses Surf.
Nessy’s level 67 now.
Three down.
Stormy, you can sit in front for this next one.
Grimsley sends out his level 56 Liepard. It uses Fake Out. Then it uses Night Slash. Stormy is at 156 HP out of 192. Stormy uses Hammer Arm. Liepard faints. Nessy comes out to handle the Krookodile. It uses Earthquake. Nessy uses Surf. One is left standing.
Scrafty is next.
I don’t have anything I’m super comfortable having out against it, so I think I’m going to go for an odder pick and have Vertex fight it. If nothing else, yay Intimidate.
Vertex uses Spark. Scrafty uses Rock Tomb. Vertex’s Speed is lowered, but Scrafty’s down to half health. Vertex uses Spark. Ugh, a sliver of health left. Scrafty uses Rock Tomb again and Speed is lowered again. Grimsely is going to use a Full Restore, so I’m going to use Charge.
Scrafty uses Crunch.
A moment of fear for Vertex. Yike.
Charged Spark takes out Scrafty, though.
Grimsley’s final pokemon is Bisharp. DAMIAN, this is your time.
DAMIAN uses Flamethrower. Bisharp faints.
4/4.
Yay.
The question now becomes what I want in front. If memory serves, Iris is now the Champion. I don’t know if her Dragon theme is changed up at all. I do know that her levels will be a bit higher than what these four fights have entailed.
I think I’ll put Caspet up front. She’s faster than anything, and does enough damage that unless something goes very wrong, she has an excellent chance of just nailing the first thing.
...On second thought, no.
Iris might have a Hydreigon. Likely not first, but I do not need to ever give a Hydreigon extra moves. So.
Stormy, I guess. Stormy’s reliable, and whatever happens, probably won’t die in one hit. Okay.
Hi I’m Iris and I’m extra af.
AF.
Oh, I don’t remember her theme music. Feels... prancy. I like it.
HEY WAIT LOOK I DID A SMART THING SHE DOES HAVE HYDREIGON FIRST.
STORMY USE HAMMER ARM AND PLEASE HIT.
(It’s level 57.)
Hydreigon uses Flamethrower. I figured there was a very good chance of that happening, but Stormy endures the hit in the green, and Hammer Arm hits.
Hydreigon down!
Stormy grows to level 65!
Aggron is next.
I don’t want to risk Earthquake, Nessy’s taking this.
Level 57 Aggron, Nessy uses Surf. No point wasting Hydro Pump on something likely to have Sturdy.
Okay so it doesn’t have Sturdy.
It’s also gone now.
Nessy’s level 68.
Iris sends out a Lapras, Vertex needs something to do. Vertex uses Charge as a safety measure/to see if I can one-shot the Lapras. Lapras uses... Ice Beam, I think, but I was typing in this window when the attack went off. Because this has my full attention.
Vertex uses Spark. Lapras faints.
Iris has a Haxorus. It is level 59.
Well, Nessy has Ice Beam.
Haxorus hits first with Earthquake. Nessy stays green.
IRIS WHY DOES YOUR HAXORUS HAVE A FUCKING FOCUS SASH COME ON I’M SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO LIKE YOU.
Siiiigh. Nessy gets to use another Ice Beam, likely after the inevitable Full Restore comes in.
Yes to both those things.
Haxorus faints.
Iris sends out Druddigon, Nessy stays in. Nessy uses Ice Beam. ...Druddigon survives with a sliver of red, but is frozen. Nessy uses Ice Beam again. Druddigon faints.
Last up is Archeops.
I am, at heart, a sentimental man.
Caspet. I believe in you. You, the closest thing to a starter this run had after the first hour.
Use Shadow Ball.
WE WIN.
That...
Geez, that certainly happened, didn’t it? I can’t say I’m disappointed, exactly, because I like winning too much, but. Outside of Vertex vs. Scrafty, there wasn’t much fear involved. Kind of anticlimactic.
And sad, to think that Diego could have been part of it if we hadn’t met DAMIAN first. He missed it by so little.
Iris.
Iris.
Please.
Wait, where’s the shot of my entire team? Game!
No.
Here are our available living pokemon in the box. Hark and rejoice, my friends I will never play with again. The friends most of you never met are victorious.
Here lie Dreamor, Tagg, Sylarana, Sasuke, Itsy, Stella, Puff, Boruto, Cerberus, and Diego.
Thank you, and farewell.
Final team:
Nice job, guys.
Caspet, level 70.
Photon, level 65.
Nessy, level 68.
Vertex, level 64.
DAMIAN, level 65.
Stormy, level 65.
Phew.
So all of the tension went out of order for this one. My starter died early, I was massively overleveled for the Elite Four and didn’t even expect to be fighting them this round, then I was, and meaningful deaths weren’t that common or devastating.
But I had fun, and I hope the two of you who sometimes read these enjoyed the adventure. I’m done with this gen for like. at least a year, but I have decided to do a Nuzlocke of either Fire Red or Leaf Green. I don’t know which, but I’m not going to Randomize the run. I am going to have one very specific rule changing things up to make going back to the gen three version of gen one hopefully very worth it, but yeah.
I don’t know when that will be happening, but I seem to enjoy having one of these going. Plus, I think the rule changes I have in mind would make my posts less meandering.
Anyway, thanks for reading.

Pokémon Chronology: The Mewtwo’s Story
This was really hard to did it, I know perfectly the anime wasn’t no longer desing for has a timeline/chronology. But you know... Fuck this rule! This is the Fan World and no has a God’s Rule to ruin the fun! And to highlight more than I do not have a life, I come to present a chronology I did (with help) about the Mewtwo Saga, yes, I also gave myself the freedom to include the Genesect movie because I can.
Before to star, a little disclaimers:
The slogan "forever 10" will be ignored.
Only the Japanese version of the story will be taken into account.
The special of the 10° anniversary will not be taken into account because it is more a commission on the part of the USA.
BW, although it was thought as a reboot of the anime, the idea was discarded after a few chapters, so ... fuck that rule too!
I did this for fun, if you think you can provide information. Can do it.
With this in mind, let's start with this.
20 years before the anime.
The TR is led by Madam Boss, sends Miyamoto on a mission to search for the Mythical Pokémon Mew. Miyamoto is lost in a mountain range of South America, although it is believed she died, she survives the avalanche.
Nothing was known about Mew until 18 years later.
18 years after the disappearance of Miyamoto.
Giovanni becomes leader of the TR (it is unknown what happened to Madam Boss) and discover the fossil of Mew in some mountains of South America.
In the lapse of 18 years the original Amber dies in a car accident. Human clones only live during childhood. And Ambertwo looks very developed. Dr. Fuji is the leader of the experiment and Amber’s father.
A month later, Mewtwo was born.
Unknown time lapse.
Mewtwo and Ambertwo communicate through telepathy, however, it dies and Mewtwo is calm to avoid a possible disaster.
Two years after the death of Ambertwo.
Mewtwo completes his development and destroys the laboratory. Giovanni takes him to the TR. Meanwhile, Ash begins his journey.
Months later, Mewtwo destroys the barracks and begins his plan of revenge against humans.
One year after the escape*.
The events of the film, Ash receives his invitation.
Time after.
Mewtwo Returns occurs in Johto. Ash comes back to help him, although he does not remember what happened in the movie.
Sometime between Hoenn and Sinnoh.
A group of scientists learned of the existence of a pokémon called Mewtwo, possibly of the information lost (and perhaps stolen) from the TR. With a DNA from Mew, a new cloning project is started following the information of Dr. Fuji's prototype.
3 years after Mewtwo returns.
The new Mewtwo escapes just like her predecessor. With the difference that much of the team that created her is still alive and sends a hunter after her. Virgil, a girl and an elder help her against the hunter and she is free again. A storm intercepts her and several pokémon take care of her.
So,during her career against flying pokémon she meets Genesect in the mountains. Start the movie 16.
*The japanese book, “This is animation, Pocket Monster Mewtwo Strikes Back”, Shudo, the autor and screenwriter of the movie, mencioned this date.

I Don’t Think Colress Actually Hates Ghetsis
@icykalisartblog asked me to post another one of their analyses!
So… I might get a lot of hate for this post, but I’m really interested in Colress as a character and I’ve talked about some of these details before, so I feel like it’s worth talking about this in one place. I’ve been thinking about this a lot after USUM especially, since a lot of people were praising Colress for confronting Ghetsis in that game. Basically, this post will explain why I’m pretty sure Colress is lying when he talks about despising Ghetsis.
Colress is a Liar Colress lies often. He’s especially fond of minimizing the bad things he does and lying by omission. We can’t trust Colress when he states things because this has been shown multiple times.
In BW2, he says, "Those Crustle… Were they just lying here, out of energy, with their boulders on their backs?" on Route 4 when he uses his Colress Machine to reenergize the Crustle blocking the road. Later, he gives Nate/Rosa the device and says, "Here! This is from me! This is a prototype of my device that energizes Pokémon! It doesn't work on battling Pokémon, but you may find it useful for something! Well then, I wish you and your Pokémon a safe journey! Now that I think about it! In the Seaside Cave on Route 21, I saw something that reminded me of when we met on Route 4." In these lines, he implies that he stumbled upon the roadblocks. But we learn right after infiltrating the Plasma Frigate that Team Plasma set up the Crustle on purpose! This is Colress’s own team!
Also, note that the Colress Machine Colress gives out breaks after only one use, and that the roadblock was right by the Plasma Frigate. It’s almost certain that Colress was lying about not knowing what was up with those Crustle and set all this up to lead Nate/Rosa to the Frigate to test him/her--putting a child in danger! Later, when we find out that Colress is a member of Team Plasma, he says, “The reason I have been traveling all over Unova and battling many Pokémon Trainers is because I was testing the viability of this approach to bringing out the full strength of Pokémon. In that respect, you've done an amazing job,” another sign that he led the main character into danger just to test his/her strategy.
Even when it’s clear that Colress is part of Team Plasma, he doesn’t say anything about being the boss of it. He just says, "Welcome! I was asked by an acquaintance to help with his research.” But then later, Ghetsis says this:
So Colress was actually the boss the whole time, but never says so himself. He was minimizing his role in Team Plasma’s actions.
Earlier in the game, when the player defeats Zinzolin in Lacunosa Town, he says this:
Zinzolin is saying that Colress is the one who figured out that the DNA Splicers were held in Opelucid City. This detail combined with the fact that Colress’s room in the Plasma Frigate has all the controls to the ship indicates Colress is the one who froze Opelucid City… but he never apologizes for that or any of the other things he did in BW2 or USUM. His never mentioning this is another form of minimizing.
Also, in USUM, Colress alters the device the Ultra Recon Squad asked him to create without their knowledge:
After all of this, we can’t assume Colress always tells the truth. He often twists or hides the truth for his own purposes.
Signs Colress Doesn’t Hate Ghetsis
In USUM, the Ghetsis who’s part of Rainbow Rocket knows Colress well enough to make a call on his behavior ("Of course... The Colress of this world! But you should have no reason to meddle in my plans!”) even though this is a BW Ghetsis. This means he and Colress have known each other for years, which makes sense. Colress gives out the Genesect Drives in USUM, suggesting he had something to do with that, and Ghetsis wouldn’t have just chosen anybody to be the boss of his team. But, in BW2, Colress says, “For one thing, I detested Ghetsis from the start!" Why would Colress have such a longstanding relationship with somebody he hated from the beginning?
Maybe Colress hated Ghetsis’s methods and just stuck by him for all that time for resources… except, Colress is fine with being “merciless” as long as it brings out the full potential of pokemon. He says so back in BW2. Since he intentionally pit Nate/Rosa and Ghetsis against each other to see which of their approaches was more effective, do we really know Colress wouldn’t have told Ghetsis something like, “How fortunate that you defeated that trainer! I detested them from the beginning, but I had no choice but to test the viability of their approach,” if Ghetsis had won instead?
Colress tells Nate/Rosa at the end of BW2, "The things you and your Pokémon have seen and felt... Do they belong to you and you alone? If you would, please have another Pokémon battle with me. By facing you, I feel as if I can see what I should do from now on." In USUM, when he’s talking to himself in the Tide Song Hotel, he says, "If a Trainer trusts his or her Pokémon, even in the most extreme of situations, the Pokémon inevitably respond by unleashing their full power! Just like that Trainer I once met..." These quotes make it sound like Nate/Rosa taught him that treating pokemon with respect was the right method--it makes it sound like he learned his lesson. But in USUM, he keeps doing unethical and creepy things, like enabling Necrozma to forcefully fuse with Nebby, making them go out of control and putting them both in pain (so much for consent or “trust”). Also, if Colress hated Ghetsis and his methods, would he use the exact same moveset he did… and on Klinklang, his signature pokemon, no less?
Would Colress keep making his Metagross spam Explosion, a powerful move that hurts his pokemon, in the Battle Tree?
Would he decide to do something so similar to Ghetsis’s evil plan, hurting Nebby and Necrozma and betraying the Ultra Recon Squad in the process?
Would the designers have decided to mysteriously not show Colress’s face when he tells RR Ghetsis he despises him?
Would Colress have chosen to deal with RR Ghetsis in a way that did as little harm to him as possible?
Would Colress have creepily followed Moon/Sun and Lillie while invisible, letting them face off against dangerous adults? Also, consider that when Colress does finally reveal himself, it’s when Lillie and Moon aren’t in serious danger (they had conscious pokemon, unlike Ghetsis), and Colress chooses to play with Ghetsis by appearing and disappearing. Since Colress says he wants to study RR’s castle, it really seems more like he showed up to research everything and stopped Ghetsis because he was holding things up--not to help out at Wicke’s request. He even slips up and says, "This castle... Oh, of course! Necrozma's power to open Ultra Wormholes overflowed and resonated with intent of tremendous evil, twisting reality and causing this to appear! The vortex of power somehow...summoned the evil leaders, such as Ghetsis, from their worlds! It's all very interesting... Ah, I mean, quite a pain. I could put this power to much better use!" which is pretty disturbing considering he’s saying the power specifically drew in evil people.
Would Colress have explicitly stated that he hopes Ghetsis stays out of trouble in such a way that it’s possible he’s saying he hopes Ghetsis doesn’t get hurt himself?
Also, Colress names Ghetsis many times in quick succession here, even referring to RR as, “...the evil leaders, such as Ghetsis,” and mentioning that Ghetsis shouldn’t be taken lightly (even though he took him pretty lightly just then).
I think all of these details show that Colress’s attitude toward Ghetsis is ambiguous, and that his supposed hatred for him is probably not real. The question then becomes, “Why does he keep saying he hates him?” I think it’s because Colress misleads people to get what he wants. It’s another way of avoiding blame. Note that he always says he hates Ghetsis when the protagonists are there--it’s another form of misrepresenting things to make himself look helpful and nice.
Also, Ghetsis Definitely Doesn’t Hate Colress
It’s probably worth mentioning what Ghetsis thinks of Colress. I’ve seen some people saying he abused Colress or treated him badly, making Colress hate him, but… there isn’t any evidence for that. He gave Colress power and resources, and doesn’t appear to have restricted his freedom in any way--Colress got to travel all over Unova in BW2, and was able to easily undermine Team Plasma in the process.
As I stated before, Ghetsis knew Colress for a long time, and he wouldn’t have made just anybody the boss. Since Colress has a color name, he might have held a rank similar to the Seven Sages even though he kept himself scarce in BW. He berates Colress once he watches him betray Team Plasma: "That blasted Colress! The fool is far too committed to pure science. This is how he repays me for making him the boss of Team Plasma? How dare he put his personal intellectual curiosity before our ultimate mission of conquering Unova!" And then Ghetsis… does nothing. Normally, Ghetsis has no qualms with treating his enemies with brutality. But he just leaves Colress at the controls of the Plasma Frigate after this without punishing him whatsoever! Similarly, RR Ghetsis doesn’t try to do anything when Colress yells at him and says he despises him, though he does call Colress a “bastard” in versions of the game in other languages. So once again, he gets angry, but does nothing to hurt him. Speaking of other languages, in the Japanese version of the game, the way the dialogue is timed is a little different than the English version. So in that version, we get to see that Ghetsis actually smiles for a split-second when Colress shows up.
I really don’t think Ghetsis hates Colress at all, even though he does get mad at him. I can only theorize about this, but since Colress did locate the DNA Splicers and develop technology for Team Plasma and Ghetsis has known Colress for a long time, he probably figured working with him was worth it despite Colress being unpredictable. Ghetsis is really manipulative, so maybe Colress’s ambiguous attitude was even useful to him in some situations. In Conclusion
It’s not totally clear what Colress thinks of Ghetsis, but there’s a lot of evidence that he doesn’t truly hate him. I think the most likely possibility based on Colress’s phrasing and body language is that he respects Ghetsis, but also finds him amusing and uses him for his own ends. As for Ghetsis, he didn’t abuse Colress (just because he’s an abuser, that doesn’t mean he abused everyone he knew) and clearly doesn’t hate him, regardless of Colress’s opinion of him. I hope this was interesting to see!
