Hello, could I have a request? If it’s not too much of a bother, maybe about kenma having a crush on a foreigner who’s still new to speaking Japanese, so he teaches her how to speak better, gets to know her better and finds out she’s also a gamer? Sorry if it’s too specific, I love your writing!! 🥺
Thank you so much for reading my work! I adore Kenma he is everything so thank you for requesting him. I didn’t want to stop writing this! I hope you like it!
Kenma x Foreign Student Reader
——————————
You were the absolute ONLY thing that could take Kenma’s attention away from his Nintendo switch
When you trotted into class silently that day as a new student that just moved to Japan from [Your City] Kenma just scribbled in his notebook like he always does when the teacher is talking because he didn’t hear you come in
The teacher asked you to introduce yourself and you did, shyly and in less than accurate Japanese
This got catboy’s attention
When Kenma heard your angelic voice he lifted his head up from the paper for the first time that day
Baby boy is smart af. He doesn’t even need to listen in class and he gets straight A’s
His eyes widened when he saw you. You clearly weren’t from here and he didn’t know how he felt about that
He takes a mental note that you looked.....different.
Um, good different.
VERY good different. He realized, as he studied your features
Kenma thought you were beautiful and although your introduction had grammatical errors, he found your mistakes quite adorable
You sat in front and to the left of him which was ideal for Kenma because you couldn’t really see him staring
Since Kenma is a gifted student he is always abnormally bored in classes. His teachers always took away all of his electronics so he didn’t even try anymore. This current Modern Japanese class was no exception until you joined, and as the days went by he found himself not even missing his electronics for the first time in his life because he shared that class with you
He has you to look at now
You were so pretty and interesting to him.
He wished he could talk to you
Hiding behind his hair so that he wouldn’t get caught with red cheeks and all, he sighed admiringly as he watched you listen diligently to the teacher. The way you looked when you were concentrated made Kenma’s stomach hurt because you were just so cute. Watching you made him wish he had Kuroo’s confidence when it came to girls
Maybe he would ask Kuroo for advice, albeit a mortifying thought
Day after day in class Kenma watched as you read the teacher’s lips in hopes of slowing down the language in your head better. When everyone got a worksheet in class Kenma always did his work fast and just smirked to himself because you would quietly sound out everything you were reading and translate it to English.
So cute
Kenma knew his fair share of English because of his American gamer friends, so when he heard you translate a Japanese word incorrectly, which would have been detrimental for your grade on this paper, Kenma wanted so badly to jump in to help you
But he was anxious
In silent panic, he watched you whisper the wrong answers out loud because you had translated one early sentence incorrectly .
Oh no.
You were going to fail!
What would Kuroo do??? Kenma thought.
In his animated mind, he conjured up an air bubble version of Kuroo looking down at him and lecturing him, telling Kenma that: “you are like blood that should flow towards the blood that has the most attractive body covering it which is obviously a reference to the cute foreign girl you have a crush on so STOP BEING SUCH A WUSS AND HELP HER, KENMA!”
Kenma shook his head violently. The air bubble version of Kuroo disappeared.
God, even in his made up thoughts his best friend was obnoxious
Kenma’s volleyball team, Fukurõdani’s volleyball team and Hinata all knew Kenma’s true personality.
They knew that Kenma wasn’t a shy person like most people initially think when they see him alone in the corner. In fact, he wasn’t shy at all. He just didn’t like people. Learn the difference.
And when Kenma did like specific people he still wanted them to stay at an arms length
So why did he like you so much? He was convinced that he wouldn’t mind having you closer than an arms length because of how pretty you are. Kenma liked looking at aesthetically pleasing things, and in that respect you were much much better than his games or his volleyball friends.
But jumping in to save your assignment still wasn’t him. It just wasn’t Kenma. He didn’t chat to others in class and enjoy it like everyone else in this school. He liked chatting with Kuroo, Shōyō, and his gaming pals, sure. But everyone else was slightly annoying.
But not you.
He wasn’t annoyed by you despite the fact that he’s been watching your embarassing quirks for over a week now. He felt quite the opposite for you, actually...
Completely unaware of Kenma’s daily analysis of you like you always were, you smiled as you finished your work. Ready to leave, you collected your paper, preparing to hand in the open-book assignment worth 40% of your grade. But before you stood up you felt a delicate hand on your arm, halting you.
“Uhhhh.......” You look up to see the most gorgeous boy you’ve ever seen in all the countries you’ve been in. He had striking cat-like eyes that made your heart beat faster and his voice was soft and alluring.
With a serious face, he removed his hand from your arm and pointed to your sheet. In perfect English he said, “That means “theatre audition” actually. Not “movie theatre.”
You were shocked that his English sounded better than your Japanese
Kenma felt a burst of pride within because he could infer that he impressed you with his English
You blushed and quickly started erasing the subsequent answers. “Oh my gosh, thank you so much.”
You expected the gorgeous boy to walk away after that but you were even more taken back when he pulled up a chair next to you.
His sudden movement blew breeze in your direction which wafted the mango-scent of his shampoo toward you. You almost salivated. His hair was so shiny, he was so beautiful and to top it off he smelled to-die-for.
“You made minor translation errors in question 1, 4 and 5 too. Mind if I help you? My name’s Kenma.” He asked hopefully, still speaking to you in impeccable English.
You introduced yourself too while blushing some more and of course you accepted his help
Throughout the rest of class, Kenma, talkative as ever—asked you a bunch of questions in order to get to know you. You shared with him that your parents were divorced and that you decided to move from [Your City] where you lived all your life with your mom to move in with your dad in Japan for high school and University because you loved/missed him. You told him that your dad spoke Japanese to you as a baby but you lost a lot of it living so far away and having no one to practice with.
Kenma became more and more intrigued by you. He could listen to you talk all day which would probably give his best friend a heart attack since Kuroo was put on a strict talking time limit that kicked in after 3 hours.
The more the cat boy learned about you the more he wanted to learn. Especially when you mentioned that your favourite hobby included gaming.
Kenma, being fairly asexual but attracted to you, was unfamiliar with the way the concept of you gaming turned him alllll the way on.
He imagined you beside him during his gaming weekends wearing a baggy t-shirt & just your underwear underneath like he wears.
Damn
He flushed
Let’s just say Kenma had trouble shifting inconspicuously under the desk to adjust his tightened pants when he thought about you gaming.
He mentally prepared to get himself off on the thought as soon as he got home tonight
Yep. You officially had him wrapped around your finger, and you didn’t even know it.
You had no idea that that conversation would go on forever
You had no idea that Kenma had always denied tutoring others when the Modern Japanese teacher asked, and that is why the teacher gladly allowed you two to work together
You had no idea that the rest of the class was ASTONISHED by the quiet and stunning setter of Nekoma (who does everything in his power to not be approachable and avoid social situations) going out of his way to keep a conversation going with another student
You had no idea that all the Kenma admirers were soooooo jealous of you right now
You had no idea that Kenma would glare back at the girls who glared at you and try his best to become your friend in the coming weeks
You had no idea that you both would enjoy every moment of your close friendship. A bit too much
You had no idea that, weeks later, Kuroo would force Kenma into confessing to you, even if it was over your favourite game as avatars... and you would cry tears of joy
You had no idea that you would lose your voice cheering for your boyfriend at Nationals........twice.
You had no idea that upon graduation you two would adopt an adorable kitty and name her -cinema-
You had no idea that years later, Kenma would become the husband of your dreams and that shortly thereafter you would give birth to the most beautiful cat-eyed baby girl that was a splitting image of her stunning bearded father
Just imagine daddy Kenma all grown up with a beard omg
No.... as you sat there in class trying to repeat after him the Japanese sentence on the worksheet, you absolutely had no idea
But
When Kenma asked for your number at the bell and you blushed beautifully again, he felt butterflies in his stomach by the sight, and that’s when
He did have an idea that all of that would happen.
Because love-struck Kenma wouldn’t accept anything less.

Into the Multiverse!
“You can’t get any kind of connection with the lab?”
“Negative, Captain. Dr Welles’ terminal is not accepting transmission requests.”
Jaq swore under their breath. They really could have done with Phineas’ advice on this one.
One minute they’d been shuttling replacement parts for a generator down to the New Hope Centre, the next, they’d been thrown completely off course by a phenomena they had never encountered before. Since passing through the . . . what had ADA called it? Portal? Anomaly? Jaq wasn’t rightly sure what it was but the important point was their systems had gone haywire ever since they had been sent hurtling through, every alarm the Unreliable had (including a few they’d been previously unaware of) screaming at them until Parvati had gotten things under control. All was quiet now and that worried Jaq more.
They stared out the cockpit window at the ship before them – a mirror image of their own – and tapped their fingers against the arm of the captain’s chair, picking at the edge of the frayed leather.
“And you’re reading life forms aboard the . . . other Unreliable?”
“Correct, Captain.”
Was this some sort of trap? Another attempt by the deposed former Board members to undermine the new government in the system? Or something else? Something stranger?
“Transmission inbound. It appears to be from an alternate autonomous-digital-astrogator.”
ADA’s pixelated brows had disappeared upwards in surprise on the terminal. Jaq suspected their own expression was similar.
“Patch it through, ADA.”
There was a moment’s pause as the connection was secured and then a woman’s voice filled the cockpit, steady and authoritative.
“Am I speaking with the Captain of the Unreliable?” she asked.
“Correct,” Jaq replied, curiosity warring with caution. “And you are?”
Static crackled in the air and Jaq rubbed the back of their neck where their hair stood on end.
“I too, am the Captain of the Unreliable. My Unreliable, that is.” The voice sounded thoughtful now and tinged with what might have been excitement. “It would appear you and your crew have crossed into this Universe via a temporal rift.”
Right. Obviously. That made total sense, Jaq thought. They narrowed their eyes at the ship opposite, searching for . . . they weren’t really sure what. Markings from a mercenary group maybe? Or something off, something to mark it out as hostile. It really did appear, in every way, to be exactly the same as their own.
“You suspect a trap?” the unknown woman asked.
“Wouldn’t you?”
The alternate Captain hummed. “A reasonable assumption, to be certain, but not correct in this case, Captain . . ?”
“Evenshaw,” Jaq offered. “Captain Jaq Evenshaw.” There didn’t seem any risk in giving their name. It carried a little weight after all – or it did in their own universe at least, and if this woman was to be believed then that seemed unlikely to be the case here.
“And I am Captain Aethel Fiori de DeSoto,” she returned.
DeSoto? Was this some long-lost relative of Max’s? Well, at least that didn’t sound like the name of any Board loyalists Jaq had come across.
“Have you encountered the concept of the multiverse before, Captain Evenshaw?”
“Uhh . . .” It sounded like something Phineas might have mentioned once or twice but they couldn’t say they understood it.
“Not to worry,” the other captain offered and Jaq found her voice strangely reassuring. “If you are willing to meet – and I believe it may be mutually beneficial for us to do so – then I will do my best to explain. Though, it might be best, Captain Evenshaw, if you came alone. I think it would be prudent to avoid our two crews making contact.”
 * * *
Jaq waited for the hiss of the airlock doors opening, their nerves tingling in anticipation. Their hands felt empty without the weight of a rifle but they had agreed to come unarmed. They tightened the strap on their body armour just for something to do.
“I believe you are making a grave mistake, Captain,” Max had said as they’d prepared to leave the safety of their own ship, and for once, even Felix hadn’t argued with him. Under other circumstances, Jaq would have been inclined to agree with the vicar, walking alone and unarmed into unknown territory wasn’t the brightest plan, nor the most strategically sound, but there was something about the tone of the other captain that set them at ease.
Still, Jaq was wary when they stepped through into the uncannily familiar confines of the alternate Unreliable.
“Aah, it’s you.”
Jaq froze just beyond the threshold of the airlock, taking in the striking woman before them. Her dark skin was framed by white hair and Jaq found themselves staring back into golden eyes that regarded them with curiosity.  She stood a little over their own height, graceful limbed and with the confidently controlled posture that Jaq recognised as being that of a fellow soldier. They frowned and weighed her up, searching for any sign of hostility in those startling eyes.
“How nice to put a name to face,” Captain Fiori de DeSoto continued. “Or one of them, at least.”
Jaq’s confusion must have shone through their attempts to guard their expression as she offered a reassuring smile. “All will be explained. Please, accompany me somewhere we might speak more freely.”
With that she stood aside, welcoming them aboard the Unreliable. As Jaq stepped in, they thought they caught sight of a curious pair of eyes watching them from the hold before the figure skittered away. They followed Fiori de DeSoto up the stairs to the captain’s cabin, their hand hanging loose at their side, fingers just within reach of where their holster should have been.
“Tea?” the Captain asked upon entering the room.
Jaq nodded, staring about them, taking in the décor. This was the first real difference they had noted since boarding. Where their room was adorned with tossball posters, photographs and hastily scribbled to-do lists, this space was, though still distinctly homely, perhaps neater and more ordered. Jaq spotted the same drinks trolley that sat in their room, but rather than holding bottles of zero-gee and abandoned electronics, it was adorned with crystal and glass that appeared handmade, and there were stacks of books about the room that would not have looked out of place in Max’s cabin.
“Here.”
When they turned, Captain Fiori de DeSoto was offering them a cup of fine china painted with intricate patterns, the sweet smell of trip-teaze drifting from it. Jaq accepted it with a grateful smile. They’d seen enough to just about convince them there was no risk here, or, at least, not if they extended the Captain the same courtesy she had shown them.
“Now then,” the Captain said, taking a seat on the edge of her bunk. “Shall we talk?”
 * * *
“So, you’re telling me I’m in one of an infinite number of alternate universes?”
Aethel nodded. “That’s right.” She’d been patient in explaining the concept of the multiverse, fielding Jaq’s questions without hesitation or any hint of frustration as they struggled to wrap their head around what was happening. Admittedly, they’d found accepting the idea they had slipped into another dimension a little easier than that Aethel was married to the vicar. . .
“And in this Universe, I – I mean the other me – is still in stasis aboard the Hope?”
“Most likely,” she replied. “Or perhaps you never boarded the Hope. We could not say without checking the personnel records. Anything is possible.”
Jaq fiddled with the empty tea cup before setting it down cautiously atop the polished surface of the desk beside the captain’s terminal.
“Of course, it would be best if you did not have contact with the other you,” Aethel continued with the same casual authority with which she had bestowed all her knowledge throughout their conversation. “Who knows what might happen should that occur. This reality could splinter at the anomaly of two Jaqs occupying the same space. Or you might become trapped here.”
Jaq had no reason to doubt her knowledge on the subject. They grimaced at the thought. It was probably best not to break time and space as they knew it if it could be avoided.
“Phin’s not going to believe this,” they muttered. They weren’t sure they’d be able to remember half of what Aethel had explained. They’d have to ask her to write it down for them so they could provide him with a full report.
“Phin?” Aethel seemed to turn the word over in her mouth for a moment, weighing it up. “You are referring to Dr Phineas Welles, I presume?”
Jaq gave a wary nod and realised they were running a thumb over the band of black ink etched into the skin of their finger. Out of habit, the ring itself sat safe in their pocket on its chain, in case of the need for sudden violence. It had been an unnecessary act in this incidence.
They noted Aethel’s gaze following the movement of their thumb. “Ahh, I see,” she intoned, an amused smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. Jaq slipped their hand in their pocket.
“And you would like to return to Dr Welles?”
“As soon as possible.” And without inducing some sort of tear in the fabric of the universe, preferably.
Aethel cast them a warm look full of understanding. “Well then, let’s see what I can do to assist with that.”
Thank you to @autonomous-digital-astrogator for organising this exchange.
@jackalgirl I hope I got some way towards capturing the wonderful complexity of Aethel’s character. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know her and can’t wait to read more of her story.

Solar on Weekly Idol
Tumblr media
- MCs: “They’re an 8 member group, each from their own planet who have come to steal the hearts of many with their wit and spunk. They recently debuted with their first title track ‘Solar System.’ Please welcome Solar!”
- Solar joins the MCs, bowing towards them while waving and smiling towards the cameras. Once everyone is assembled, Mina begins to count down: “3, 2, 1″ and the other members chime in:
“Your rays of sunshine. Hello, we are Solar!”
Tumblr media
- INTRODUCTIONS: “Solar’s intros” -
- Mina smiles and waves with both hands, before making a finger heart which she shoots towards the camera like an arrow: “Hi everyone, I’m your brightly shining Mina, the eldest and leader of Solar - I hope you’ll take care of us today! We’re really excited to be here, thank you for having us!”
- Skitz winks at the camera and gives a smirk while shooting finger guns between the camera and hosts: “Just because I’m the coldest doesn’t mean I can’t melt hearts. Heyo, I’m Skitz!”, she gives a two fingered salute and bow.
- Yueliang bows swiftly and smiles: "As bright as the moon, it's Solar sweetheart Yueliang!". She sends a flirty wink and a finger heart at the camera.
- Ari gives a small flirty smile to the camera and a little finger wave. “I’m the sweetest heat of Solar, you can call me Ari” She does a dramatic model pose before laughing.
- AJ smiles at the camera and cups her cheeks with both hands, “I’m Solar’s small ball of sunshine! It’s always nice to see you, I’m AJ”, she does a finger heart before the camera changes to the next member.
- Luna smiles sweetly and sends a little finger heart to the camera. "Just like the moon, I'm always there for you. Hi i'm your Luna"
- Rin scrunches her nose up at the other members' introductions and when it's her turn, flashing her gummy smile as she awkwardly does a ✌️ pose to the cameras (the wrong ones) and then - when Mina tilts her body to the camera - she just does the blank tight lipped smile: "yes, hi, uh I'm Rin! Uh....it's nice to be here! yes! yes...." she looks over to Mina to ask for help to get out of this very awkward introduction time; Mina just smiles at the younger member before noding towards the MCs to continue.
- MCs: “Your maknae, Hannah, unfortunately couldn’t make it today as she has gone on temporary hiatus to focus on her school work. Anything you want to tell her?”
- all the members nod: “We want to say that we love and miss her, and that we can’t wait for her to come back and join us again - and, of course, that we’ll be happily cheering for her to succeed in school! Hannah, fighting!” The members shoot different kinds of hearts towards the cameras, smiling and waving.
Tumblr media
- CONCEPT  -
- MCs: “So, each member represents a planet - could you tell us a bit more about that?”
- Mina flashes a smile, before beginning to explain: „my planet is Mercury, the ruler of communication, messages, eloquence and wit. But not only can I talk for hours, I can also listen for hours - so please know that I‘ll always have an open ear for you!“ Mina shoots a flirty wink towards a camera.
- Skitz smirks and points to her face. “Just like my planet Uranus I have 13 rings around my body! I represent being weird, art, science, originality, the unexpected, libido. And I symbolize discovery, not being traditional, insight, expression of self, and shock value. So don’t worry, I’ll keep you on your toes!”
- Yueliang smiles again: "In Solar I'm Jupiter which is the planet of growth and good fortune so keep me close to your heart, I'll be your lucky charm!
- Ari nods. “I represent the planet Mars, the planet of energy, action, and desire. You’re always in for a good time when I’m around”, she tries to wink a fails miserably.
- AJ: “My planet is Venus! It’s the planet of love, beauty and aesthetics and pleasure! I live by ‘Give the love around and back around it goes’ I think it’s a good philosophy that matches my planet!”
- Luna: "In Solar, I represent Earth. I am the Earth, the Earth is me, so I own everything you're walking on !", everyone laughs. "I'm joking, I picked Earth, well... it was kind of the last one", she giggles, "I'm happy I got it though, as nature, like music has a healing effect on people's souls. And I truly hope I can heal yours through my music"
- Rin, clenches fist and does a 'hwaiting' motion. "I represent Neptune. It is associated with dreams, inspiration, psychic receptivity and illusion. The members always say that I always zone out so I guess it fits me quite well!"
Tumblr media
- TALENTS AND PROFILES -
- MCs: “Soo, about Skitz - “tired parent who carries a caffeine drink with her….where is this drink then?”
- Skitz smirks and motions toward the manager hiding behind screen. “Actually I was told I couldn’t bring one on set today.... so what you see is me fighting the urge to scream and cry and nap on the floor.”
- MCs: “Skitz can sing and rap? Like at the same time?” The group laughs as Skitz shakes her head with a snort: “I’m the rapper of the group, but I can sing as well. I auditioned as a singer at J. Tune and passed with a rap I came up with.”
- MCs turn towards Ari now: “Lived in Boston and in Korea growing up... can you do a Boston accent?” Ari starts going off in English with a Boston-accent, saying something about one of the girls stealing her candy.
- MCs smile at Mina: “It says here that you’re not only the oldest and tallest, but also the one with the biggest hands? Can you show them to us?” Mina laughs and hides her face behind her hands for a few seconds, before holding both hands towards the camera. Everyone makes “ooh” and “aah”, before the MCs give Mina a ruler to measure one hand - it’s 17cm, and Luna grins slyly while grabbing for one of her leader’s hands. “Perfect size for holding mine!”, she says, making everyone laugh, Mina hugs her lovingly.
- MCs continue: “According to your profile, Mina, you’re the main vocal and can also play the piano really well - we heard you prepared a little performance for us?” Mina smiles and nods, before getting up and walking towards the keyboard that has just been set up for her. She then sings an acoustic cover of Heart of Gold by Neil Young while playing the piano. Yue and Luna hold up imaginary lightsticks and dramatically swing their arms around to the music, while Skitz seems a bit touched by the performance of the leader. Everyone cheers and whoops when Mina finishes, and she smiles and bows towards the cameras and MCs, before taking her seat again.
- now it’s Yueliang’s turn: "We can see here that you have played the violin since you were three years old, can you show us? We prepared a violin for you!" Yueliang looks a bit taken aback but she accepts the challenge right away. When she sees the violin, though, she burst out laughing. It's a 1/32 size, basically a child violin. Despite the small and cheap instrument, she tries to play some famous pieces but since the violin is made of plastic the sound is terrible. Yueliang can't stop laughing and all the members are cheering and clapping excitedly like it was a real concert.
- the MCs look at AJ: “It says here that you do CF’s, and you have experience in MCing and variety”. AJ nods, listening attentively, “I do. I have done quite a few, mostly for make up brands”. “You actually sold out a lip tint... is that the brand you’re wearing today?”. AJ panics a bit, “Well... actually no... it’s sold out!” everyone laughs at her quick save and she smiles shyly.
- one of the MCs waves at AJ: “Come to this side, you’re going to be an MC with us for a while” they gesture for AJ to join them on the other side, where the staff brings a chair for her and a new name tag with the letters MC quickly scribbled. AJ laughs and bows before taking a seat next to the MC, trying to read the cards over their shoulders. After failing to see the questions and just swinging her legs over the chair, the MC’s dismiss her, ripping the MC tag from her dramatically.
- the MCs look at Luna’s profile now: "Grew up in London. Fluent in Japanese as well as Spanish. Could you say something to International fans watching Weekly Idol ?" She agrees to do so and starts with Japanese. "Hello everyone, I'm Solar's main dancer Luna, we hope you'll like this episode of Weekly Idol, please give it lots of love. Thank you for supporting us ! Bye bye !" And translates it in Spanish. "Hola encantadores de Weekly Idol. Me llamo Luna, soy la bailarina principal de Solar. Esperamos que les encantará este episodio de Weekly Idol y le dará mucho amor. ¡Muchas gracias por apoyarnos ! ¡Adiós!"
- the MCs applaud her and ask: "You also have a special little dance that is 'similar to the Carlton Dance'. What is it ? Can you show it to us?" She explains briefly what the Carlton Dance is and gets up to show it which sends everyone into a laughing fit as she moves her body from left to right dramatically. "Now I will show you my version." Luna says before flailing around dancing again, in a very over the top manner. Giggles happily as she goes back to her seat, like a child who was just given candy.
- it’s finally Rin’s turn, and the MCs read: "Master Bone Cracker, nickname is Crunchy. So Rin, I guess you have a really old body?" other members chime in agreement, while Rin just gummy smiles again "So before you crack any more of your bones while waiting for your turn, let's get the game started. You have to produce at least 30 pop sounds to pass the challenge." Rin nods and waves to the camera, "this is easy peasy. my fingers alone can crack 22 times in one session. guys, are y'all ready to win?"
Tumblr media
- DANCE GAMES -
- Ari enjoys learning new dance choreos, so is having the time of her life. But makes the most dramatic noises throughout, which makes the other girls laugh and mess up
- During a song switch, Mina somehow slips on the ground and falls down, making everyone laugh. She quickly gets up and bows to the hosts and members, apologizing for messing up all while still giggling uncontrollably.
-Skitz is the one that enjoys having fun with the dances, and depending on which song comes on, will make faces at the camera or be completely serious and in the moment.
- In the end of all the dancing Skitz falls to the floor and groans. “No morrreeee.” Tries to nap instead and gets sat on by Luna.
– AJ knows lots of other groups choreos but she stays sitting and just dancing softly to herself, letting the other members showcase their talent. Nobody has seen AJ more confused in her life during the 2x version. She keeps making funny faces that the MC’s can’t help but point out and she’s basically singing to herself to remember where she’s supposed to go. Celebrates like she just won the World Cup by the time the challenge is over.
- Luna is one of the members who does pretty well unless someone starts making noises and it distracts her, which is exactly what Ari does so Luna giggles and smacks her arm in fake anger because she can barely get her moves straight. In the x2 version she is one of the members who does really well, along with Rin.
- Yueliang is the one who shouts at the members to correct their position and identifies which section of the song they're dancing to when it's confusing. All of this while giggling.
- Rin knows every single choreo, and does the 2x perfectly too. slightly out of breath at the end and is just standing there looking at the other members panting like “👀 y'all good?”
Tumblr media
- PAPER KISS GAME -
- Mina is first in line and stands beside Luna, using her as an arm rest and starting to tease her for their height difference right before the game starts. They’re both laughing too much when facing each other, immediately failing to proceed with the game and having to take a new paper.
- Ari stands next to Yueliang in the “pass the paper by your mouths” game and she plays up their ship so hard. Mina finally has to tell them to calm down
- Yueliang can't stay concentrate during the game because Skitz face when she tries to take the paper from Yue is too hilarious.
- AJ is the last in the line and feels slightly concerned about the game. She keeps laughing at her members failing but doesn’t wanna fail herself aka gay panic. In the end, although they succeed she still gives a loud kiss on the cheek to each member.
-Skitz is in between Yueliang and AJ, always making both girls laugh at the faces she makes as she’s trying to take and pass the paper. She gets flustered with the girls and ends up yelling at them to focus, while still laughing herself in the end because she knows how crazy she looks.
- Rin loves affection and kisses are one of her favorites. Watch her not even try so she can get a free kiss 🤩
Tumblr media
- ENDING -
- MCs: “Well, we had lots of fun with these girls today! Thank you so much for joining our program, Solar - we’ll make sure to invite you after your new comeback, too.”
- all members thank the MCs, bowing to them, and start waving towards the cameras, shooting finger hearts and blowing kisses, before Mina counts down “3, 2, 1″ and the other members chime in: “Your rays of sunshine. This was Solar! Thank you very much!”
- THE SHOW FINISHES -

Circling Eagles
Characters: Austria, Prussia; mentioned Hungary, France and Holy Rome
Summary: Austria is suddenly summoned to Berlin by Prussia for a vague meeting. Tensions run hot between them as egos due to an over abundance of ego and animosity in both, throwing their discussions off course to air grievances and bait the other.
Berlin, 1806.
Prussia was hunched over his desk in his study. The matter of France’s increasing territorial ambition had left him with more work to do than ever. He found himself a slave to all his papers as they stacked up, growing ever higher each day. He was roused from this by a light tapping on the door. One of his servants stepped in and bowed her head. He flicked his hand towards her as if to beg her to get on with it. "Master Edelstein has arrived, sir."
He harrumphed. "Have him wait five minutes in the parlor before sending him up. I'm in the middle of something." He returned back to his papers, scribbling out correspondence to generals on the front and to ambassadors throughout the European courts.
Not even a minute had gone by before the door slammed open. "Oh for heaven's sake, Gilbert! Who do you think I am, Baden? You can't expect me to wait around like your coy little mistress after you rush me over from Vienna." Roderich was leaning over the desk, in the Prussian's face.
Gilbert grimaced. Why did his beloved cousin have to wear so much fucking perfume? It never smelled good either, making it even less tolerable. "Get over yourself, Roddy. You know I would never treat your mistress like that. How is she, by the way? I've been so busy, I haven't had the chance to call on her. I hope she hasn't wasted away, having to capitulate with a man hardly capable of fulfilling his marital duties."
Roderich straightened up, his face red. Gilbert rose and shut the door. The staff didn't need to hear all this. "You jealous, spiteful little rat. If this is all you have to say to me, when I've been sending men to death to protect your pathetic little state, I've got no qualms signing a treaty with France and ending the whole thing! I'd love to join with him and rid myself of you, but tragically I have honor."
Prussia shrugged, barely suppressing his amusement at the other’s outburst. "I was enjoying myself, but you've always got to ruin the fun." He began rummaging through the stacks of paper on his desk. Eventually, he found what he was looking for. "Have you received any letter from us yet, dated a month ago after Austerlitz? I know your men were at the battle, but no one reported to me seeing you there."
"I know we got our asses handed to us and about the resultant treaty afterwards, as I negotiated that, but that's it. I'm assuming you tried reaching me about something else?" Austria gaped as he watched Prussia toss out the letter he had so valiantly fished for. "What was the point of that?"
"I'll show you instead. It's about that troublesome empire you clung so tightly to." Prussia led him out and down the halls to a darkened room in the basement. "Thankfully, it's really unsettling down here so I've had no trouble keeping my staff away from here. But it sure was a bitch wrapping the kid up in sheets and bringing him down here in the middle of the night. Without making a sound, should I add." He couldn't help the hint of pride in his voice. He lit the candles hanging by the sofa.
Roderich leaned against the wall, needing it for support. He felt queasy. There before him was the body of Holy Rome. It was a wretched sight. He was covered in wounds, his body appearing as if it had began bursting apart. His eyes were rolled to the back of his head, his tongue was swollen, and his face distorted. "What did you do to him?"
"I didn't do anything! He was sent here after Austerlitz in need of expert medical care. He got it, but everyday he kept getting worse. He became so shriveled up, completely disfigured and eventually unable to eat or move. I guess this is what happens when a state's dissolved by treaty. Almost feel bad for him, it might've been better if France had just gutted him with a sword." Prussia yawned, completely unbothered. As the years had gone by, he'd grown less and less fond with the empire-in-name-only. If anything, Francis had done him a personal favor. "I'm sorry you lost the seat of your power."
Austria was not taking this discovery well. He knew that Holy Rome ceased to exist in everything but name - hell, he agreed to it in the treaty - but he expected the embodiment of it to go slowly, peacefully. To eventually fade away till it existed in memory only. This was grotesque. A horror beyond any other imaginable. He wanted to throw up, he wanted to curl up in a ball and cry, to drink till he was numb. So of course, of course, Gilbert would take this as an opportunity to douse the wound in vinegar. "How dare you! Insinuating that was the only reason I cared for him after all these centuries. To stand there, on your high horse, and act as if you're somehow more worthy than me because you're so callous, so uncaring towards this. Marvelous! Further proof that a ghoul has no soul! Are you proud, are you fucking proud Gilbert? Will this help you sleep at night, knowing you have to live in my shadow while I've gotten everything - the girl, the empire, the power - that you've wanted?" As he spoke, he pushed Prussia against the wall, his breath stinging hot against Gilbert's lips.
He saw red. Before he even knew it, he'd punched Roderich in the jaw. Before he even knew it, he'd spat on his cousin’s hunched over body, landing it right on Roderich's cheek. He knelt down and grabbed the Austrian by the collar. "For a little whore who can't defend himself, you really love talking a big game. What do you have that I don't have? I think we know who your wife would rather be with. You know that too, don't even fucking start there. This isn't the fifteen-hundreds anymore, Roderich. All your power comes from who you can get your monarchs to marry off to, whoring yourself around to each nation so maybe they won't recognize the paper tiger in front of them. What power can you really have if you're too weak to truly flex it? As for your empire-" He gestured towards the decrepit corpse of Holy Rome, "-he's over there. Rotting away, no longer any use to you. Now what puppet will you have to prop yourself up with?" He pushed Austria away and stood. "Get over yourself, you'd be less intolerable. Sure, you won't see me crying any tears for this nuisance, but I'm not celebrating. If he really means that much to you, then figure out what to do with the body. That's the reason I called you here. I don't want this shit here any longer. He’s stinking up my cellar.”
Austria spat the blood that was pooling in his mouth out. He wiped the spit off his cheek. "You're a barbarian. Who could ever love that? Uncivilized, uncouth, an ogre. Whoever you appeal to simply lacks taste, that's all. It's not an attachment to you, it's an absence of acculturation to be worked on." He paused. "Vigorously." Collecting his pride, he rose and dusted himself off. Roderich rolled his eyes. "I suppose a proper Catholic burial in Vienna will be due. All the royal honors. I'll invite the other German states, though I doubt they'll show, a fitting tribute to their allegiance."
"Burying it would be a waste. Haven't you heard what the others have been begging for? The whole specter of France has the weaklings begging for a united Germany." Prussia wrinkled his nose up at the concept of it. "If they get their way, it might be worthwhile keeping the damn thing."
"A united Germany? One where Bavaria, Saxony, and the two of us are all working together, fighting for the same goals and for the same nation?" Austria scoffed. "A fantasy. No, if I kept him in an accessible area and the idealists got wind of that, my God. It would be a propaganda victory for them if they believed I sided with them. I can't have that. It would be suicide."
"Just a thought. That whole group keeps clamoring for it more and more. I'm not sure how easily we'll be able to crush the idea. They seem to be putting all their hopes into it." Gilbert laughed. "It's ridiculous. They want every state to be considered equals in it. Can you imagine? Having us be equal to all of them? I'd be embarrassed having to consider Cleves a peer."
Austria gave him a pointed look. "I think what would be worse is us having to consider the other an equal. The day I look at you occupying the same plane as me will be my last. You'll always be that backwater nation with unchecked ambitions to me. Saxony and Bavaria have had the common sense to acknowledge that, it's you who's always been desperate to rise beyond his station. Funny, you'd expect a Calvinist to accept that he was predestined for mediocrity."
Prussia's blood ran cold. He clenched his jaw. "And you'll always be a dying star, clinging to its last streaks of glory. Too proud to admit when he's washed up and no longer en vogue. For all your trappings of wealth and culture, it never seemed to get you any class. You're still here, in the mud, where you'll always be. Come on, don't be afraid to admit that you like it." Austria shifted nervously. Prussia smiled. "I'll send the body to you. I figure you don't want it riding in your carriage with you, you're welcome."
They tersely went back up the stairs to the main hallway. Roderich collected his coat and checked his appearance in the mirror. "You're beautiful, please leave my home now." Prussia opened the door and, as Austria walked out, said, "Make sure to give my regards to the misses."
Roderich stopped and leaned in close to Gilbert's ear. "I will as we're going to bed tonight after I've fucked her so good. And I'll think of you, sleeping in that big bed alone, and I'll sleep like a baby." He strode off, leaving Gilbert in the dust. Another meeting of unfinished business.

Tumblr media
A/N: Thank you, everyone, for giving this series a chance! Here's Chapter 1. For the sake of our collaboration effort, my co-writer and I will be alternating through who writes the chapter. (i.e. Chapter 1 is mine, Chapter 2 is hers, Chapter 3 is mine, and so forth.) If it makes anyone feel better... her part is fluff. Hope you enjoy this chapter! I enjoyed writing it. :)
Tumblr media
Kate’s A/N: Fluff comes later, but for now, suffer by the hands of this angst spikeball. By the way, chapter 2 is already done. ;)
----
Time is an intricate concept. It was amorphous, yet widely accepted as common knowledge. Alongside the topic of space, metaphysicist and scholars from various backgrounds ponder long and hard about it. Ordinary civilians and nobles too held the ability to muse about time. Everyone came to the conclusion that time is precious regardless of their statuses.
If one second is just as important, what impact does five years have?
The teal-haired evenly paced with the remaining Black Eagles; Edelgard led them around the monastery. Byleth felt the sun’s gentle rays brush upon her cheeks as her hues skimmed the premise.
Time is changing.
Everything stayed the same… almost. Destructions left piles of broken structures. Patches of grasses that happily grew at its own pace were deliberately scorched into fine particles. Classroom furniture and materials unfit for use were clumped into one heap. Additional wooden frames and ballistic weaponries plagued the surviving blueprints of the monastery. Students that once brought childish joy to the premise now introduce maturity with heavy hearts. Small chatters mulled in the background. They all came from Ferdinand, Dorothea, and Petra. Soldiers that they passed by sealed their lips at the sight of their ruler and a familiar figure. Some had the guts to even make remarks about the ex-mercenary during their presence!
“Hey, isn’t that Lady Edelgard and the Professor?”
“Yeah… wasn’t she supposed to be dead though?”
“I’ve heard.”
“Speaking of that, I was told that Brian and his friends were patrolling the outskirts when they were attacked this morning!”
“What?! By who?”
“A ghost.”
“...are you serious?”
“I am serious.”
“Oh, please. It was the Professor who knocked them out.”
Whispers eventually became audible enough to reach their ears. Not that the soldiers, visiting civilians, and staff cared much about it. If they had the chance, they would gather into one of the lecture halls and engage in heated debates! Plenty of them shared theories about the teal-haired. Some describe her as a supernatural force. Some admit that she is a hallucination. Others were hopeful for her visitation.
It was all a blur. No abstract art could capture this moment. Byleth’s jawlines became prominent as weights like sandbags were chucked on her shoulders. If she were to be honest with her feelings, she wants to find her private quarter, hole up in there, and never come out.
“I think I understand how Bernadetta feels.”
“Professor?” Edelgard glanced over at her professor. She blinked. Then, the older woman faintly smiled and looked elsewhere. “Don’t worry. I will clear up the confusion.”
“You will?”
“Of course. I’m the emperor.”
Ordinarily, Byleth would reach out and ruffle Edelgard’s hair. She would allow her fingers to run through the white locks as a cheeky smile flash.
“Aren’t you a good girl.”
Or so she would say. Instead, she felt the corner of her lips twitch. It wouldn’t be right. She cannot do that. A tender act between a teacher and a student doesn’t exist anymore. The fact that this student, who was once a house leader, who exclaimed about a monstrous desire for gorging on sweets, is now a guiding light for these souls.
Edelgard is not little anymore. She’s become a big girl-- No… She’s become a mature woman fit to lead her nation. Edelgard is now an emperor.
“...”
Byleth pressed her fingernails against the palm of her hands; a tinge of regret settled in her stomach. There was that promise she’s made with Edelgard…
Alas, her thoughts came to an abrupt screech once Petra placed a hand on her shoulder. The Brigid princess diverted her mentor’s attention to basic observations. Light-hearted stories of her interaction with the increasing number of foreigners and refugees on the monastery’s ground. It appears that she and Dorothea were quite popular with the children! Though from the corner of her eyes, Byleth’s hues caught a glimpse of the pair holding hands. Fingers intertwined, the songstress squeezed her comrade’s hand.
‘ ...Have they always been this close before? ’
Anyhow, they continued to traverse throughout the monastery’s ground. Much to Byleth’s optimism, most of the features she frequents were intact.
“I know you love gardening, Professor, so I’ve been trying my best to keep all of the plants watered,” Dorothea twirled her index finger in the air; a wink accompanied her action. “I took extra care with the scarlet carnation you and Edie have planted together.”
Planted? Byleth tilted her head, eyebrows arched.
‘ I planted a flower with Edelgard…? ’
Something wasn’t adding up. Her brain scrambled through its memory bank. It tossed and pulled on various sectors, only to no avail. The ex-mercenary rested a hand on her temple. She furrowed her brows. Without a memory of the past, we cannot operate in the present or think about the future. If her perseverance results in blanks, then how was she supposed to answer to the songstress?
“If it weren’t for you, I’m sure those flowers would have died five years ago,” Edelgard answered in her stead. She shot a glance at her teacher. There was that brilliant radiance from the noble’s direction again. “Isn’t that right, Professor?”
“...I don’t remember planting them. Not with you.”
Edelgard chuckled and temporarily cupped her own chin. “You must have forgotten. I can’t blame you as you were considered dead for five years.”
‘ Dead… ’
The tendons on her neck bulged, her pulse visible. She will never get used to hearing that terminology. Though they were uttered plenty of times when she was a mercenary and as an instructor, she never had the status badged on herself. Even if her ears are probably lying to her, the word “death” associated with “Byleth” was unreal. She moistened her dry lips.
‘ This is unsettling. ’
They entered into the shed. One of the two caregivers bowed to the group. When they spotted Byleth, their eyes widen, but silence followed. Whether it was out of respect or fear, Byleth was unable to determine the cause. At least she did not have to deal with the cannibalistic gossips.
“Professor, I think you should see them for yourself.”
Edelgard took ahold of Byleth’s hand. She carefully guided the taller female deeper into the structure. Ferdinand, Dorothea, and Petra exchanged looks. The male rubbed the back of his head with a nod. As if on cue, the other members of the Black Eagle Strike Squad from behind dissipated from the area. Responsibilities may not go anywhere, but time is unforgiving. Besides, the three unanimously agreed to let Byleth catch up with their ex-house leader alone. Nothing hurts more than being likened to a buzzing fly.
As they slipped away, Byleth slowed to a stop once she saw the flower. Scarlet carnation. A sense of familiarity, yet she continuously drew nothing from her memory bank. It was as if her instincts told her that this was a reunification necessary for both her and Edelgard.
“It’s pretty.”
Blunt compliment flung out of the teacher’s mouth. Edelgard’s ears perked as she leaned down to scrutinize the object of interest. The emperor’s fingertips soon brushed amongst the petals; her eyes were fixated on the plant.
“It has grown strong since the day we have planted.”
“Was it weak before?”
“You could say that,” the white-haired retracted her hand. “It was the slowest out of all the flowers we’ve grown, no matter how much we fertilize and water.”
“A flower that blooms the latest blooms into the most beautiful flower of them all.”
Edelgard chuckled. “I never expected to hear that from you, my teacher.”
“...”
Perhaps it was for the best that she lacks the ability to showcase her emotions. The inner turmoil would repel the Edelgard if it ever manifested. Conservant recollection stained the carnations. Byleth clenched her fists. How could she ever forget? Those were the words not only her father echoed, but she echoed too. Her first friend outside of her seclusion from the mercenaries. The first friend she’s made… Who was it? Violent, black ink actively scribbled on the child as the small Byleth took their hand. Just… who was it?
“It was something I told someone when I was young.”
Alas, the past is the past. There is no point in mulling over an event that no one could confirm. Maybe she should ask her father, Jeralt, about it. Speaking of Jeralt… Burning questions that boiled her inside threatens to leak into her other organs. It has already reached her fast-beating heart, her respiration for her lungs, and constricted parts of her stomach. Too many needs to be asked about the five-year gap. When they bid their farewells to the caregivers and parted from the shed, Byleth opened her mouth.
“I have been meaning to ask this, but where is Caspar, Bernadetta, Linhardt, and Hubert?”
“...”
The goddess must’ve pressed the pause button. The alumni had stood a few steps beyond her teacher. Standing on the brief stairways that connected the pathway of the dormitory grounds and garden, Byleth bore her eyes onto the girl’s back. Edelgard’s shoulders were tense. Back stationary, the white-haired uttered her answer.
“Caspar betrayed us.”
Caspar? That boy? The one who playfully slugged Byleth’s shoulder with every chance he’s got? The hardworking student who trained almost every day in the training ground? The noble sensitive to those he’s surrounds with?
Impossible.
That’s impossible.
Improbable.
Ridiculous.
“...that’s not right.”
Edelgard finally turned around. Those eyes were not shining. It was like a plastic doll, eyes dazed and distant. It looks as though her consciousness may have been elsewhere at this moment. Were they in her head? Or were they somewhere else? She faintly smiled as her dead gaze fixated on Byleth’s. Articulations and connotations dripped with pure disgust.
“It’s the truth. He is now fighting for Dimitri.”
“Dimitri…”
“I’ve only told you a bit about the conflict, did I?” her eyes clouded. “He has joined the Kingdom of Faerghus.”
Further explanation came to light. Ever since Byleth’s unofficial vacation into the black world for five years, Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude waged war with each other. The one who initiated was none other than Edelgard von Hresvelg. She and the Black Eagle Strike Squad led the battalions into a gruesome conflict to take over the Officer’s Academy. Various members of the Knights of Seiros blockaded their pathway. Fountains of blood littered the premise. Cries for numerous deities and reasons tarnished the atmosphere. Soundwaves from projectiles and crumbling features shook the ground. It was a complete nightmare. Yet it was not for naught. Byleth was a key player just like Rhea was a key player to the church.
Rhea and other members of the Church of Seiros joined hands to defeat Edelgard. Claude acts as a middleman. No one from his side dares step foot into the rising tension with no threshold. Unfortunately, his shrewd nature paints a different light on the Leicester Alliance. Half of his nation is divided into those who support the Kingdom of Faerghus and those who support the Adrestian Empire. Winning his people over would be an impossible feat.
She must have bonked her head so hard in the battle if she could not recall ANY of these details.
“Caspar did not agree with my tactics, so he formally told me that he was leaving,” Edelgard forcefully chuckled. “Perhaps the same could be said for Bernadetta and Linhardt.”
“They also joined Dimitri?”
“Fortunately, no. Reports from our scouts told us that they are in the Leicester Alliance. It’s likely that they are seeking shelter for the past five years.”
It should have been a relief. That should have soothed the powerful organ that savagely rapped upon her chest plate. In lieu, Byleth felt her mind transcend her physical self and watched the dissolvement of her former students. Caspar, Bernadetta, and Linhardt… She gulped.
“What about Hubert?”
Edelgard’s beam faltered; her body radiated the exact opposite of confidence in aura.
“...he died.”
“...”
‘ This has to be a nightmare. ’
She wished to know more about his death. Alas, that would not be wise. A shadow had washed over the emperor’s features. The man who wholeheartedly devoted faith and affection to his princess… the man that fought together with her… the man’s true nature of remaining as her loyal servant… it was gone in a puff of smoke… and the older woman was not there to witness it.
“I… didn’t know.”
“It’s natural you don’t know. I bet you didn’t even know that we have Leonie, Sylvian, and Lysithea with us either.”
Leonie Pinelli and Lysithea von Ordelia from the Golden Deer House. Sylvain Jose Gautier from the Blue Lions House. Those were some surprising addition to the empire’s war efforts.
“Your father had also died.”
The teal-haired immediately placed a hand over her chest. Her vision began to strobe in and out as more information poured into her skull. There was also the news of her father’s death… Jeralt. Her throat tightened and her breaths shortened. She barely kept ahold of her heartbreak. Oh, Jeralt! The very person who had raised her since she was an infant! He had been slain by none other than Those Who Slither in the Dark! She squeezed her chest, nails scraping at the metallic plate.
“...”
She wanted to say something. Byleth’s knees nearly gave in and almost made her crumple into a disheveled heap. Not only was she absent for Hubert’s death, she was also absent for the person she calls family. Her jawlines were prominent as she rapidly blinked. How could she have forgotten? Whatever she had done in the previous battle, she shouldn’t have been careless! This vital fragment of memory should have never been forgotten!
Then, a singular chortle slipped from the other’s direction.
“Everyone is leaving me.” A solemn tear fell down Edelgard’s cheek; her body looked calm despite how tangled her mind was. The false grin became unbearably wider as shaky waves of laughter were produced in abnormal intervals. “Even you.”
“!”
Byleth immediately reached out for Edelgard. Without thinking, she pulled the girl into a tight hug. Was it to comfort the student? Or was it to comfort herself? Arms wrapped around the red noble, she brought her hand up to the girl’s head. She pressed the woman against her chest as close as possible.
“I’m sorry, Edelgard.”
“You think an apology is enough…?” she buried her face into the ex-mercenary’s bosom. The red fingers curled inward, digging the armor’s tips into Byleth’s back. Edelgard shook her head slowly. “I’ve waited five years for you. Five years…!”
“I’m sorry…”
“Do you know how much you’ve hurt me?”
“I’m so sorry…”
“It hurts...! It really hurts, Byleth!”
“I’m… so sorry…”
Agony. Sorrow. Scars. Those five years felt like hours. Those five years felt like centuries for her. Hot torrents of grief coursed down the girl’s face as her sobs became apparent.
“I’m scared of being alone again…”
Byleth felt tears prickle from the corner of her eyes. She was never one to cry. No matter the circumstances, nothing tickled her lacrimal glands. Not even the deaths of her mercenary comrades would cause her to shed a tear. The sight of her star student melting into a blubbering mess succumbs into an irresistible temptation to collapse. Accompanied by the horrific news of Jeralt’s fate?
‘ Why…? ’ A subdued choke crawled past her lips. ‘ Why did I wake up to this nightmare? ’
As much as a great tremor overtook her, Byleth avoided confrontation with her own emotions. At least, for now. The shivering young lady in her grasp needed her. It would do them no good to have the two shatter into pieces at the same time. There would be no one to pick up the shards. Soft, tender hushes traveled to the noble’s eardrums as she quickly rubbed her back.
“I didn’t mean to leave you alone…” Byleth chewed her lips. “I won’t leave you alone ever again.”
None dared to move from their position. Passing soldiers and comrades spotted the two but respectfully left them to their own devices. Even Ferdinand, Dorothea, and Petra, who peered from the corner in secrecy, felt their heartstrings tug. Just like Edelgard, they wished for their Byleth to return to the monastery. The loss of their professor damaged their morales. Who knew how important the teal-haired was to their life? However, none of them were as devastated as Edelgard herself.
Rumors of her insanity held some truth to it.
A wild beast in vermillion traveling all over Fodlan. Missions granted to students like Sylvain and Leonie expanded their search in enemy territories. Frequent visitation of the historical battle between the Adrestian Empire and the Church of Seiros at Garreg Mach Monastery’s outskirts were made personally by the noble. Feminine howls instilled with misery spread across the desolated premise. Morales was driven even harder into the dirt as the war’s stalemate prolonged.
Describing this as a nightmare was an understatement.
Ferdinand lips curved downward.
What would have happened if she did not return…?
“I’m afraid Lady Edelgard would have to step down if our professor did not return,” Ferdinand mumbled to his friends indirectly. “As her advisor, if she were to continue on this pathway, I would have to forcefully remove her.”
“Thank goodness for our teacher. I wouldn’t want to see that.”
“I agree with you, Dorothea. Had the professor not come, perhaps we would have many troubles for the future.”
“What are you three doing here?”
“!!!”
Behind them, an older woman crossed her arms. Shamir sharp gaze pierced their vulnerable sides as they slowly turned to look at her. Not that they had much of a chance to fully see her. The mercenary hovered over their squatting figures. She shot a glance around the corner. A faint “huh” was heard.
“So, the professor did come back…”
The woman, who was once known as the Knights of Seiros, betrayed the organization for the sake of following one person: Byleth. She would even leave her trustworthy companion, Catherine behind. Bickers, competitions, ridiculous story time from Catherine, lustful nights they’ve shared… Those were all gone in a single day. Shamir kept her features firm as she muttered,
“You are an interesting one.”
The four eventually slithered back to the background as Byleth and Edelgard shared a private moment. It was a well-deserved reunion for the two.
[ Some time later… ]
“I knew you would come back, Professor.”
Sylvain’s weary smile formed as Edelgard and Byleth were approached by the tall male.
After the two had separated from the hug and spent a tender moment of easing each other’s worries, the warrior squeezed into their bubble. Alongside with him, there was Lysithea and Leonie. Almost as if on cue, the orange-hair leaped forward. She immediately tackled the ex-mercenary with a large grin. A small “oof!” came from Byleth’s mouth as her back collided with the dormitory ground’s pavement. Stars temporarily swam in her vision as the grown student squeezed her.
“I knew you would come back!” she exclaimed. “It would be a shame to have my rival stay dead.”
“Leonie! That isn’t how you should greet our professor!” Lysithea came between the two. Almost in a comedic fashion, she tore them apart from each other with a scowl. “I swear, I don’t know how to deal with people like you. Are you okay, Professor?”
“...”
Streaks of memories were aroused. Lysithea, Leonie, Sylvain… They haven’t truly changed, have they? She nodded to the white-haired and propped her upper body up. Three of them… even in the heart of war, even with their betrayal to their nations, how could they be so... cheerful?
Almost as if he had read her mind, the young man walked over to his mentor. He extended his hand.
“It’s because of you and your decision to stay with Lady Edelgard. We trust in your judgment more than our own house leader.”
After acceptance and a pull, the two were in close proximity. Like the gentleman he is, he brushed off any debris from her shoulders. Sylvain’s other hand eventually held a part of her hair’s end; his fingers slowly letting them fall back to her shoulder bit by bit. His eyes narrowed.
“I’m surprised that your hair went back to normal… Not that I didn’t like your old look. I actually prefer your original color.”
“Now that you’ve mentioned it, you’re right! Did my rival hate her new hair?”
“Ugh, I doubt that’s the reason why.”
‘ They’re talking about my hair again... ’
Before she could ask, a familiar figure entered into her field of vision. An older male cupped his chin, a book held in his other hand. Incoherent mumbles resonated from his throat as the staff headed in the direction of his office. His next step after the last froze mid-air. Slowly, the gray-haired individual cocked his head towards Byleth and Sylvain. His eyes nearly boggled from its socket; the person making a quick adjustment to his monocle.
“Ah-- Professor Byleth… After five, long years, you’ve finally returned to us.” That voice belonged to no one other than the researcher, Hanneman. Edelgard, Sylvain, Lysithea, and Leonie ceased their exchange at his presence. Once again, as if on cue, the three alumni outside of the Black Eagle House left; the other half were left behind. Hanneman beamed as he neared Jeralt’s child. “Can’t say that I’m not happy about that news. It’s been a while since we’ve last had any positive news.”
“It has been five years, or so I have been told.”
“You are correct. Though I must say, you do seem a bit different than I remember.”
“?”
What could he mean by that?
“Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I sense that you--”
“Professor Hanneman, I apologize, but I remember we have an urgent matter to attend to.” Abrupt. Straight to the point. Edelgard was known to be a hot knife slashing through butter. In this case, Hanneman was the butter. Byleth glanced over at the emperor. Stoic, ruthless, and displeasure were displayed on her facial features. It contradicted the image that Byleth had of her when she was a student. “I suggest you return back to your research.”
Truly a ruler to lay one’s life to.
Hanneman let out an amused hum. “Very well. If you insist.” His eyelids closed as he directed a smile at the teal-haired. “You have a good day, Professor.”
“...”
‘ If only Sothis was here… ’
Questions may have been answered about the gap, but there were still potholes to fill in. Although it may be impossible to cover all grounds, the next best course of action is to have as many of them treated in one day. Unfortunately, it seems that Hanneman was unable to deliver his theories to the teacher. Perhaps she should stop by his office sometime tomorrow. A faint huff came from the instructor.
“Is there something wrong with my hair?”
Edelgard raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”
“They kept mentioning that it was different before. Did I… Did someone dye my hair while I was asleep?”
“When you were bestowed with the powers from Sothis, your hair color had changed.”
Ah, that was right… Edelgard confirmed that Sothis’s disappearance was because she had lost her abilities with the green-haired. There was an issue with this explanation, though. Byleth had absolutely zero memory as to how she received power from the female she could only sense. If she went along with the noble’s line of reasoning, she should have been able to see Sothis by now, right? The alternate hypothesis had to be rejected due to the results.
Byleth rubbed her temple.
This was incomprehensible. News of Hubert’s and Jeralt’s deaths was beyond depressing enough. Now she had lost Sothis, and has no idea how she was flung to the future by five years. Just how perplexing can this situation get?! A migraine might just knock on her door anytime now…
“Professor?”
She snapped back to reality. The ex-mercenary’s eyes trailed over to the white-haired. Concern scribbled all over the woman’s face. This prompted the professor to retract her hand and shook her head.
“I was just thinking.”
“Thinking?”
“Yes. However, I’m afraid I might get a headache if I do so.”
“I, uh, see…”
“Anyway, what was this urgent matter we have to attend to?”
“Oh, it wasn’t THAT urgent.”
“...”
There goes that signature blank guise. The noble could not help but ease her tense shoulders. Then, she took ahold of the older woman’s hand.
“There is something we can do.”
“?”
“Say, it has been a long day for you. I know you might be tired, but would you like to have some tea with me before it gets dark?”
“Of course.”
A genuine smile blossomed on Edelgard’s face. If she could sparkle, it would illuminate the entire ground with its bright rays! Maybe it might blind Byleth’s sight too! Alas, it must be a blessing that no one possesses such nonsensical abilities. Besides, there was nothing wrong with having a little downtime. Today was an eventful day. From waking up in the outskirts of the monastery to gaining newfound knowledge of the incidents that transpired, it was a lot to take in in less than 24 hours.
The older female was taken to her own dormitory room. Usually, tea parties and private conversations were held in the field outside of the cafeteria. However, this evening was a little different. It had to be hosted elsewhere, lest they be noticed by the others. The professor may have been generally accepted by her students, but it did not mean the same for patrolling soldiers and guards. Blatant gossips would ruin a sweet moment yearned by the emperor.
Everything was still intact in her room. Destruction from the mission to reclaim the premise left the dormitories mostly untouched. To her pleasant surprise, Edelgard mentioned that she and Lysithea would take turns cleaning and tidying her bedroom. (Were they clean freaks?) Not a single centimeter of dust or debris were spotted on her supplies and furniture. At least that shaved off the rest of her evening for their sudden tea time.
“It’s surreal to have you by my side once again,” Edelgard remarked. White teacup in both hands, she allowed the steam to lazily waft into the air, her eyes fixated on her mentor. “I can only hope this doesn’t end up as a dream.”
On the mattress, Byleth lowered her cup after a sip.
“It’s surreal to have fallen asleep for five years. I hope that it is a dream.”
“You tease.”
The two females chuckled as they returned back to their drinks. Silence tailed afterward, but only momentarily.
“As you well know, I’m perfectly capable of commanding the army by myself,” the noble confessed; her thumbs rubbing among the porcelain's surface. “However, when you’re around, it’s somehow different.”
“?”
“I’m… not sure I can properly explain it. I suppose your perspective on the battlefield is simply sharper than mine--”
“You don’t need to beat around the bush.”
“Huh?”
“I know how much you’ve missed me… and I miss you too.”
There was a pregnant pause. Not even five seconds completely ticked by when redness flushed to Edelgard’s cheeks. Although her ears were hidden behind the new hairstyle and horned crown, it was obvious that they were rosy as her face. Words might express many types of emotions and might clarify them. Ergo, it might not be necessary. The vermillion female said plenty with her body. Byleth shifted her gaze away from the noble and took another sip.
“I’ve been meaning to ask this, but… you seem different.”
The remark almost instantly cooled off the heat from her face.
“I do?”
“Yes.”
“...”
Byleth forgot that her face hardly showed signs of context to her emotions. She hastily added,
“...I meant, in a good way.”
A deep and long audible breath exited out of Edelgard’s mouth. She lowered the cup and shook her head; the color pink now splashed upon her features.
“Don’t scare me like that, Professor! I thought you were disappointed in me.”
“Nonsense. Why would I be disappointed in someone that has grown up to be a beautiful emperor?”
This flirt--! Whether she was aware of it or not, Edelgard surmised she was the latter. One hand was brought up to conceal parts of her face as she mumbled incomprehensibly. Byleth is a sly woman. A really sly woman… and this is part of her that she so dearly misses.
“Still, I’m afraid I broke our promise.”
“Promise?”
Byleth nodded.
“You don’t remember? I promised to be with you when you become an emperor.”
“...I must’ve forgotten.”
How the tide has turned. Now, it was Edelgard who had forgotten about it. It was a promise that Byleth would never let it slip. Then again, it would be unfair to compare her memory lapses with Edelgard’s. Their circumstances were far too drastic to level out. Still… Byleth’s knuckles whitened as she placed the cup aside on a nearby nightstand.
“I’m sorry I missed your inauguration.”
“...That’s okay.”
A wave of drowsiness abruptly slammed into the older woman. The teal-haired felt herself yawning. She stifled it, only for the burst of air to create a strange sound effect from her trembling lips. Edelgard rose her brows and widened her hues. Shortly afterward, she began to heartfully laugh.
“Perhaps it is time we call it a day, my teacher. It has gotten dark outside.”
She was right. Their conversations, which felt like mere minutes, turned out to last until the sun fully settled. Stars twinkled in the distant as the noble got up from the mattress. She gently placed it on the same nightstand and smiled broadly.
“Good-night, Byleth.”
“Wait.”
Right when the white-haired cracked open the wooden barrier, Byleth came from behind and wrapped her arms around the student. Coziness trickled into both members as their heat was mutually shared. She rested her chin on the girl’s shoulder, her dark hues eyeing her reaction. Edelgard retained the discoloration on her cheeks; her irises flickered to the source.
“...Professor, I hope you understand that I cannot stand here forever.”
“I know.”
A squeeze. Then, she broke her hold on the ex-house leader. Regrettably, the warmth mellowed out. She glanced over her shoulder and watched her tactician wave.
“Sleep well, Edelgard.”
That was the last she saw that night. The door clicked closed and it separated the two apart. Metallic footsteps clomped on the ground until it fades into nothingness. For Byleth, she felt another yawn incoming. A deep inhale was made, and it was followed by a long exhale. She hardly bothered to cover it up.
‘ I think I should take a bath before sleeping. ’
There was a nearby sauna to many of the staff and students shock in the past. Now that it was occupied by the military from the Adrestian Empire, the number of participants in cleansing their soul and body should decrease. Byleth rummaged through her chest and, thankfully, found the necessary items for a deep wash.
‘ I wish I could’ve invited Edelgard. ’
Maybe that could be for tomorrow. After speaking to Hanneman about the matters he wanted to mention, it would be perfect to take a bath with the royal woman. It has been far too long since she had last helped each other wash. (Mostly due to Edelgard’s fear of showing off her experimental scars and surgeries from her past.) Byleth shrugged her shoulders, hung her large overcoat on the door, and walked out of her dormitory room.
‘ Still… I can’t believe I’ve leapt five years into the future… I wonder what Sothis would have to say about that? ’
Meanwhile, as Byleth satisfied her sanitary and sleepy demands, Edelgard promptly returned back to her dormitory room. Located on the second floor, the nobles were always granted the grandiose bedrooms commoners yearn for. They had to differentiate themselves between the lower class. It did not matter what sort of relationship they had with each other. They were of different leagues, and many made sure to make that distinguishable.
The hallway was empty. Ferdinand, who was the only other occupant, is currently absent. Perhaps this is an act from the heavens. Edelgard prefers not to answer his interrogative questions. At least, for now. It would be impossible to run away from his curiosity and uncertainty about Byleth.
Byleth
Clothes stripped, armors hung, and weapons deposited to their rightful place, she flopped on the mattress. Its soft materials easily cushioned her weight as she shifted. The young lady eventually laid on her side. A small candle lit the corner of her bed. Nearby, there was a dark overcoat. Close inspection reveals the necessity for stitches and improvement over its patchwork.
Byleth
Her fingers dug into the cloak as her white blanket draped over her naked body. Edelgard began to toy with one of the loose threads from the overcoat; the object of interest twirled in-between her index and middle. Reminiscence of her past with her professor crawled vividly in her mind. The warm touch, the hand-holding, the comforting embrace… She dryly swallowed.
“Byleth… ” she buried her face into the thick material. Patches close to her eyes moistened as a burst of exhale slipped past her lips. “Byleth, I miss you so much...”

Art/Fic Trade
My half of the art/fic trade with @yanagisawa. At almost 2,500 words, this got way out of hand. I apologize for this monster.
The room was silent but for the sound of chalk hitting the chalkboard, the furious tap-tap-tap intensifying as Yanagisawa’s hand flew across the board. He had abandoned his calculator long before, relying instead upon his impeccable mental calculations. As fast as his wrist moved, scribbling line upon line of mathematical jargon, his mind whirled even faster, almost too fast for his hands to keep up. With a maniacal glint to his eyes and dark circles underneath them, his hair messy and unkempt, a rough layer of stubble graying his chin, he looked every part the mad scientist.
This time, for sure!
Suddenly, his brain ground to a halt. His hand stilled, hovering just above the chalkboard’s surface.
No, that formula...it wouldn’t work there.
He wracked his brain for an alternative, sure there must be one. He’d come so far, after all, certainly there was something! He gripped the chalk harder, nearly snapping it in two. He was on the right track, he knew he was, so what was he missing?
Seconds stretched into minutes, yet his brilliant brain offered no solution to the problem.
In desperation, Yanagisawa flung the chalk from him, a high-pitched tink! sounding from where it met the wall. Angrily, he shoved the chalkboard away from him, the loud crash of it falling backward reverberating throughout the tiny room.
Yanagisawa collapsed to the floor, his head in his hands, as if with his hands he could draw from his addled brain the answers he sought.
In despair, he looked up at the calendar above his desk. It was March ninth.
He was running out of time.
“Dinner,” Yanagisawa announced, opening the door without so much as a knock.
The room he entered was a bedroom, a cozy little place with not much else besides a double-bed and two nightstands, one placed on either side of the bed. A lamp sat on one of them, burning brightly and casting a calming glow throughout the room. In the bed, the former assassin once known as the God of Death sat propped up with pillows, engrossed in a book. He looked up expectantly when the scientist entered, a soft smile curling his lips.
“About time,” he quipped, setting his book to the side.
Yanagisawa scowled. “Is that any way to speak to your savior?”
“You know I’m only kidding,” the God of Death smirked at his disgruntlement.
Yanagisawa grumbled but drew closer anyway, bringing with him a bowl of soup. He set the meal on the God of Death’s lap.
The God of Death wrinkled his nose as he eyed the soup disgustedly. “Again?”
“Yes, again. Do you want to accelerate the anti-matter’s cell division?”
The God of Death avoided his gaze, mumbling that he didn’t, and reluctantly accepted the proffered spoon. The soup sloshed slightly as he used the spoon to ladle some for himself, raising it hesitantly to his lips.
“So...any progress?”
Yanagisawa clenched his fists, gritted his teeth.
That was all the answer the God of Death needed. The spoon clinked as he set it down, letting it rest in the bowl. When he looked up at Yanagisawa, his eyes were resolute, any trace of the playfulness there minutes before long gone by now. “Maybe it’s time to stop.”
“No!” Yanagisawa objected, surprised by the vehemence of his own outburst. “I’m almost there. I’m so close, just a--”
“Kotarou.”
Yanagisawa paused mid-ramble, surprised to hear his given name. It wasn’t often that he was called that.
The God of Death’s stare was steady, unwavering, locked on Yanagisawa’s own. “It’s fine. I have no regrets.”
No, no, it isn’t fine at all…
The God of Death broke their stare to put his soup on the nightstand, shifting over ever so slightly and patting the bed beside him. “Kotarou, please.” His gaze was pleading. “You look exhausted. Come to bed.”
Yanagisawa turned briskly, his back to the former assassin.
“No.”
He couldn’t look. Not now, not like this. If he looked, he might really give in to his requests. “I won’t do it,” Yanagisawa reiterated, voice resolute. He clenched his fists at his sides, hunching his shoulders. “This is no time for sleep. I said I’d save you, and that is exactly what I’m going to do.”
“Kotarou!”
But the scientist was beyond the reach of words. He had made a promise to himself, and to this man before him, promises he had no intention of breaking. He had made up his mind long ago.
“I’m going to save you,” Yanagisawa repeated, determination in his eyes, in his heart, and even in his step as he strode purposefully from the room, deaf to the God of Death’s protests.
I’m going to save you.
No, no, no!
Yanagisawa hurled a stack of manila folders at the wall, its papers flying out and scattering across the room, carpeting the floor.
A year of research. A year.
He had been slaving away at this task for a year.
He chucked another folder at the wall, then a box of chalk.
A year. And nothing.
A binder went flying.
There was no problem too great for the esteemed Yanagisawa Koutarou to solve. With his brains, even the most complex concepts could be unraveled and understood.
“Dammit!”
All he needed was a little more time.
When he ran out of things to throw, things to project his anger and desperation onto, he finally sank to the floor, tears of frustration—or even, dare he think it, sorrow—threatening to spill.
This wasn’t the end. It couldn’t be. Yanagisawa didn’t lose.
All he needed was time.
But time he had not. He was fresh out.
It was March twelfth.
Lost somewhere in his own inner turmoil, Yanagisawa didn’t hear the labored steps that approached him from behind.
“Why the long face?” inquired a rather cheeky voice, seemingly from out of nowhere.
Yanagisawa almost had it within him to fire back a retort, but any words he might have had died in his throat when he turned to the owner of the voice. The God of Death’s posture was not his usual confident stance, cocky smile playing at his lips. Instead he leaned heavily against the wall, his chest rising and falling a bit too fast for a simple trip down the hallway.
Yanagisawa rose immediately, rushing to the other man to offer support. “What are you doing out of bed?!” he demanded, so shocked that he forgot to suppress the concern in his voice.
“Just checking on you,” he replied, voice strained, try as he might to hide it.
Yanagisawa only sighed, hoisting one of the God of Death’s arms over his shoulders, supporting the brunt of his weight. On any other day, he might have felt a bit standoffish; maybe it was the fatigue getting to him, but he felt no desire to fight or banter. “Let’s get you back to bed.”
“Kotarou, I...” the God of Death began, once they were halfway down the hallway.
“Hm?”
“I...I don’t have much time left.”
The words pierced Yanagisawa to his very core, and he tried not to stop dead in his tracks. The God of Death’s condition had worsened drastically over the last few days, certainly, but he was fighting it. As long as he didn’t overexert himself or do anything stupid, then maybe he could buy them some time.
Ever since Yanagisawa had discovered the catastrophic effects of antimatter on a given organism, he had spent nearly every waking hour trying to find a way to cease the rapid particle acceleration.
After many hours of study, he’d formulated an elixir that brought the explosion probability down to one percent. It was a huge accomplishment, but Yanagisawa soon found that while the explosion may have been stopped, the ultimate death of the host was still inevitable.
Yanagisawa laid the God of Death as carefully as he could onto the mattress in their bedroom. Yanagisawa cast him a long look, memorizing every line of his face. He had tried everything. He was still trying. So why, then, couldn’t the antimatter host be saved? If the explosion could be stopped, then it stood to reason that the death could be too.
He was about to turn around and head back to his lab space, when suddenly a hand gripped his wrist, weakly but surely.
“Please, stay with me,” the God of Death begged.
Yanagisawa wasn’t sure what made him comply this time. Maybe it was the exhaustion, or the way that the God of Death called out to him, or maybe because he knew deep down that this would be the last time.
Wordlessly, he sat beside him on the edge of the bed. The God of Death’s grip slackened but never left Yanagisawa’s wrist completely.
“Thank you,” the God of Death said, smiling pitifully.
Yanagisawa scoffed, nearly choking on the noise. “What for?”
“This past year has undoubtedly been the best of my life. I had so much fun.” Slowly, he withdrew his hand from Yanagisawa’s wrist, laying it gently on top of his hand instead. “Thank you for giving me this second chance.”
Yanagisawa didn’t know what to say; words failed him. A strange pressure was building in his chest, pushing up in his throat, constricting his breath.
The God of Death gave his hand a squeeze.
The reality of the situation hit Yanagisawa like a brick: fully and without mercy. This was the end, wasn’t it?
“I’ve failed you,” Yanagisawa blurted, eyes downcast, hands clenched. Teeth gritted, voice leaden with the impossible weight of regret. “How can you say such rosy words when I--”
The God of Death took Yanagisawa’s hand in his own, lacing their fingers together. He shook his head subtly but surely. “I have no regrets. I’ve already lived much longer than I would have ever guessed. In that time, I’ve gained many happy memories, more than I’ll ever need, I’m sure.” He chuckled a bit at that.
Yanagisawa was not to be reconciled. “But if only I—if I had found a cure, then you could have had many more!”
“Maybe,” the God of Death conceded, his expression thoughtful. “But even without that, I am content.”
“How--”
The God of Death cut him off with a single, meaningful look. “There’s no one else I’d rather spend my final moments with.”
“No--!”
“Besides,” the God of Death continued, “In the span of a year, I’ve managed to catch up on a lifetime of happy memories. It’s all thanks to you, Kotarou. I never believed I could be this happy, much less deserving of it,” he chuckled, the action sending tremors through his whole body. “I’m so full of it, I fear it might come tumbling out of my ears if I so much as sneeze.”
Yanagisawa cracked a rueful smile despite himself. Typical Guinea Pig, making jokes even on his deathbed.
The God of Death continued to blabber on, probably elaborating on some happy memory the two of them had shared. Yanagisawa tried to listen, he really did; in fact, all he wanted was to hang onto every word.
However, Yanagisawa’s brain was sidetracked by the way the God of Death’s voice was starting to slur. If his complexion looked pale before, it was deathly now.
It seemed as though the organ failure was setting in, Yanagisawa noted with growing dread. When the God of Death had stumbled into his lab hours before, it was apparent that the process had already been set in motion, but to see his condition deteriorating so quickly was jarring.
In no time at all, the former assassin’s breathing became labored, each breath becoming just that much harder to take.
“Hey, take it easy,” Yanagisawa instructed, trying to keep some measure of dignity in his words. Despite his best efforts, his voice sounded pleading, even to himself.
The God of Death didn’t respond, simply closing his eyes and directing all his concentration towards breathing.
Yanagisawa bit the inside of his lip. If his condition was already this advanced, then by his estimation, they had less than an hour.
Yanagisawa stayed by his side the whole time, watching helplessly as the man before him drew shallower and shallower breaths, feeling like more of a failure with each passing second. Honor and prestige be damned, if he couldn’t even save one man, then what kind of scientist was he? The worst kind, he was sure.
“Thank you,” the God of Death reiterated, forcing the words out through a constricted chest.
“Don’t talk,” Yanagisawa shushed him, his own chest feeling tight, but for an entirely different reason.
The God of Death ignored him. “Really, thank you for everything,” he sucked in a particularly ragged breath. “I love you so much, Kotarou.”
“Hey!” Yanagisawa shouted, lunging toward him. “Stay with me!” Was this it? His heart somersaulted in his chest. He felt like he was going to be sick.
Abandoning any and all pretenses, he climbed atop the bed, gathering the frail man in his arms. His breathing had grown positively ragged.
“Stay with me!” Yanagisawa shouted, a sob creeping into his voice. “Hey!”
He couldn’t believe his eyes. Right before him, he was slipping away.
“Please, I love you!”
Despite his state, the God of Death managed a small smile, and the look that lit up his face--Yanagisawa knew he would remember it forever.
“I love you too, Kotarou.”
It was the first time Yanagisawa had said those words. Usually it was the God of Death who started it, and Yanagisawa who answered with a “yeah, yeah,” a “sure,” and if he was feeling especially generous, a “me too.”
Now Yanagisawa wished he had told him more often.
The God of Death’s body suddenly leaped in his arms, spasming as his harsh breathing became almost too painful to watch, as if he was trying to escape his own body’s failure.
And then, suddenly, it stopped. His eyes glassed over, and Yanagisawa watched as the spark of life left his eyes. He wasn’t one to believe in souls and all that, but whatever had been the God of Death he’d gotten to know over the past two years was gone now.
In shock, in sorrow, both and everything at this point, he couldn’t tell, he stared at the lifeless doll in his arms, still warm. And then the tears started, springing from somewhere deep within, a well of frustration and pain and could-have-beens. He clutched the cooling body to his chest.
If only he hadn’t spent all his time on that futile research and had enjoyed his time with him instead; if only he had worked harder, had thrown himself headlong into the research, had found a cure.
If only…
If only…
If only…
In the empty silence, surrounded only by fruitless research and wasted time, Yanagisawa bid farewell to his greatest success and greatest failure, now left truly, truly alone with nothing but himself and his regrets.

“You’re not getting the beat right, Hyung,” Minhyuk said calmly for the fifth time.
Jinwoo was a bit distracted, thanks to the unreadable scribble on his arm. He hadn’t told the members what he had found that morning. Instead, to avoid questions, he wore a long sleeved hoodie and arrived to practice on time.
With Astro’s comeback just around the corner, it was vital that the group learn the choreography well enough to do it in their sleep.
Usually, Jinwoo was the third one, after Minhyuk and Moonbin, to get the dance moves down.
By now he should know well even to help teach the others.
Except he didn’t, because he couldn’t think about anything else than the blue ink covering his arm.
Of course, the concept of soulmates were well-known across the world. Once you and your soulmate were linked, whatever was written on your arm appeared on theirs as well.
The problem with Jinwoo was that he was a kpop idol. Idol’s almost never got linked until at least a few years after their debut. In order to be linked, both of you had to be emotionally and physically ready for the other to come into their lives. Usually, idols never had time to think about their other halves.
Which is why Jinwoo was so confused. Astro wasn’t even a year old yet. How did he have time for his soulmate?
Not to mention, the language written on his arms was not Hangul. It was some other language that Jinwoo wasn’t familiar with.
“Hyung!” Minhyuk sighed. “You’re spacing out again.”
“I’m sorry,” Jinwoo sat down on the practice floor. “Can you get the rest of the members? We need to have a meeting.”
Minhyuk sensed the sincerity in Jinwoo’s voice, so he nodded quickly and left the room.
By the time they returned, Jinwoo had worried himself into a frenzy. How would he tell his members? Would his manager find out? If he did find out, would Jinwoo be kicked out of the group? What would happen to Astro?
“What’s up?” Myungjun asked. The entirety of Astro came into the practice room. Eunwoo was the last one in, so he closed the door behind him.
“Everyone sit down because this is really big news that could literally ruin Astro’s career.”
“What happened?”
“Are you okay?”
“What would ruin our career?”
Jinwoo was suddenly bombarded with questions, which he quieted immediately by taking off his hoodie. Now left in his gray t-shirt, every member of Astro could see the words down his arms:
- eggs - honey - milk - chocolate
“What is that? Is that English?” Moonbin leaned closer to look at Jinwoo’s arm.
“I guess? But what do I do?”
“What do you mean?” Eunwoo asked. “You go find her! This is exciting, Jinwoo.”
“No it isn’t,” Jinwoo argued. “What will our manager do when he finds out? Won’t this hurt our image in one of the members of Astro suddenly comes off the market?”
“Oh,” Sanha looked down at the ground. “But we just debuted!”
“Should I just hide it? Ignore it?”
Eunwoo frowned, “I don’t know if that’s such a good idea either. Just hide it from our manager until we figure out how to tell him.”
Jinwoo sighed. Then he rubbed his thumb over the words, “What does it even say?”
Eunwoo hummed, “It says ‘eggs, honey, milk, chocolate.’ It looks like a grocery list.”
“Well, how are we going to talk if we speak in different languages?”
“I guess you’ll have to learn English.”
-
Jinwoo sat in the back of the van on the way to Astro’s next fansign. In his ears was an English podcast, one which he was trying to learn from.
For the past month, Eunwoo had been helping him immensely, but he had his own schedules and couldn’t be with Jinwoo all hours of the day.
So Jinwoo hit the books. He even signed up for an over-the-phone English lesson. He practiced his writing every day, whenever he had free time.
If his soulmate spoke English, he wanted to be able to communicate with her in whatever way was most comfortable.
“We’re here!” Astro’s manager announced. Jinwoo followed his members out of the van to the place where Astro would host a mini-concert and fansign. First he made sure his sleeves were all the way down, hiding the little “fnsgn @ 3” on his arm. He had no idea what the letters meant, so he figured it was another appointment and chose to ignore it.
For the next few hours, he completely forgot about his soulmate. He was too absorbed in the music, in the cheers of his fans.
By the time the fansign came around, all of Jinwoo’s worries were gone and he was able to focus on his conversations with the fans.
Then you appeared in front of him.
You were a college student, studying abroad in Seoul. While you had only been there for a few months, you had begun to appreciate the music there. You decided that it might be fun to go to a concert of a group you had come to fall in love with: Astro.
However, your Korean was still very limited, so you didn’t talk to the members much, in fear of embarrassing yourself.
Although, when you got to Jinwoo, he stared wide-eyed at your arm. You glanced at the scribbles on your arm and said in your little-known Korean, “So I wouldn’t forget.”
You were a very forgetful person, and it had been a habit of yours to jot down little things to remember throughout the day.
Which made sense to you, but some strange reason Jinwoo was still staring at your arm. He nudged Moonbin, who was talking to the girl beside you.
“What?” Moonbin asked, which you could comprehend.
However, Jinwoo’s reply was too quick and you didn’t catch it.
It was like a chain reaction after that. Since Jinwoo was the first in the row, each member after him whispered to the one after him.
Now all of the members were watching you as you had to move on to Moonbin.
“Hello,” you said, now nervous from all of the gazes in you.
Hew asked you something, mumbling so that you couldn’t hear him. Your eyes cut to Jinwoo as he slapped Moonbin’s shoulder.
What is going on?
When you got to Eunwoo, he smiled at you and said in English, “Can you please wait over by those trees after the fansign?”
“I guess?” You answered him.
Confusion was still the first emotion you were feeling, so you didn’t actually comprehend the request that Eunwoo made.
It never actually registered in your mind what was going on as you sat against a large tree and pulled out your phone to text your friend.
You sat there for over an hour and stood up, ready to leave and grab some dinner.
Just then, someone reached out to grab your hand. “Excuse me?”
You looked up. Jinjin was staring back at you.
Without a word he lifted up his sleeve and showed you your handwriting.
“Oh,” Now it was all coming together.
Still overwhelmed by this new information, you looked at Jinjin, panicking, “I can’t speak Korean well.” You informed him in his native tongue.
“I don’t know much English,” he replied.
“But I’m learning!” You both said at the same time, causing shared laughter to grow between the two of you.
“I’m Jinwoo,” he said, smiling still. “Nice to meet you.”
You accepted his hand, a grin taking over your whole face. “I’m Y/n. It’s nice to meet you, too.”
“Would you like to go get some coffee with me?”
You had never been more thankful for being so forgetful. “I would love that.”
~the end~
