i love your replies to the writer’s ask! about the compliment you gave yourself, yes. i do agree. i’m trying to recall which HQ fanfic of yours i first read. i’ve read so many of your works from that era. as i’m sieving through my memories, a few works of yours pop up like kageyama & the world responding?? daichi’s story with the prompt on goodbyes? adore the way you hook and drag. without looking at your masterlist, which story immediately comes to mind when you think of “time”?

about driving, since i’m still new i haven’t driven much. i’m very excited to cruise on the roads, but i’m also really bad at overtaking (i.e. i can overtake—or else how would i have passed my driving test—but i haven’t done it when cars are going fast & when it’s crowded… road conditions for my test were milder). it’s scary… SJDJSJDJSJ. i’ll hopefully be driving soon with my parent who can instruct me. i think for the time being, as i get used to the car, i have to focus, but i look forward to blasting music while driving 👍 — @anonymilk

uGH that reaper!kageyama x angel!reader fic is still one of my all time favs u__u im so happy you remember that one. sldkfjasd and the daichi story T^T -- i realized that pre-hiatus i was so so so kagehina biased with a hard sprinkling of suga but then post-hiatus i came back and suddenly i'm a daichi stan like is this..... IRL character dev bro. am i just into the Greenest of Green Flags now. not that i dont still adore kagehina bc i do. u__u they are my babies.

in terms of "time" -- i think the one that comes to mind most immediately is the hinata "length of daylight" fic i wrote! it remains one of my fav hinata fics i've written to date :D

for driving -- it def is something that needs lots of practice! but you'll get there!!! i'm excited for you!!!! and yeah to this day, i hate overtaking ppl but it's a necessary evil LOL

re: agha shahid ali YES oh my god okay. i love his stuff. i actually found him when i saw a poem of his on the new york subway lol im not even kidding. and it still remains one of my favorite poems of his to this day -- it's called Stationary, and it goes like this:

The moon did not become the sun. It just fell on the desert in great sheets, reams of silver handmade by you. The night is your cottage industry now, the day is your brisk emporium. The world is full of paper. Write to me.

i think the reason i fell so in love with it is because every single line is so vivid. not to say that most of his other poems aren't like this as well but like. idk something about this just spoke to me so much? i love love love metaphors about like irl things turning /into/ paper or ink or like... writing-related stuff. it's just such a beautiful image to me. also like there's a phrase in every line that strikes me "reams of silver", "brisk emporium" -- and something about the sentence "the world is full of paper" makes me like want to yell bc it's so??? GOOD??? bc yes!!! the world is full of paper!!!!!

and obviously, the ending just SMACKS you doesn't it? write to me. ugh. UGH. ugh its so good.

sometimes this poem still comes back to me in random moments and it makes me happy.

and now for some not so fun stuff. tw for like... ilness and death but yeah uh.

this entire summer has just been kind of ass tbh??? like. during the single month of july, we had 4 people in my family/friend circle pass away -- 2 grandparents, 1 uncle, 1 friend of a friend (who was literally only 24yrs old!!! bruh!!!! WTF!!!). we thought August was going to be chiller, but nope. last day of Aug, last thursday, my boss's wife passed away after battling with cancer for 2+ years.

it hit hard for our entire team at work bc like. she was younger than my mom. and my boss is such an industry veteran, and he and his wife have been married for 17 years, they have a 13yr old son like... it just sucked all around. we all went to the funeral this past wednesday. it was a beautiful service, but obviously really freaking sad. half our entire office was there, everyone was crying. i was crying like. it was a mess.

and then right after, i think my body had had ENOUGH of this nonsense, and i got a really bad fever literally ONE HOUR after i got home from the funeral. and i've been sick since then.

it's just been... unreasonably rough... i'm really hoping that this is the last big bad thing that's gonna happen for the rest of the year. like. im so exhausted -- pls @ the universe LOL. take it easy on us okay.

so yeah. i try to keep the heavy stuff off this blog bc it's supposed to be a place where i come to be happy and write things that make me happy so i haven't talked about this much but u__u since you asked, i didn't wanna just be like "oh yeah everything is fine" when it's not LOL

i do hope that the summer is treating you better though! <3

I finally got around to reading and reviewing a few! I've mostly read stuff from the past months since I feel like the most popular 'old' fics are already pretty well-known!! Soooo without further ado here we goooo!!

On Cold Nights by dnofsunshine 1.5k words I love short fics because my attention span is not what it used to be, so this one is amazing! Short and sweet and canon kagehina are always a good combination :)

it’s a platinum by akaashism 3.8k words Ever since the timeskip there have been so many funny social media au’s and this one is just so!!!! So incredibly!!!!!! Lmao

incipience by reminiscene 10.8k words GOD I love oblivious kageyama and this one takes it to the next fucking level! There is smut in here so if you don’t like that don’t read this one. It takes place after the timeskip so it’s all good :)

To summit a mountain by TroglodyteMonologue (@troglodytemonologue) 4.5k words Our boys all grown up and yet with such a long way to go! Exploring their future and what it means to them to be partners in a cute Olympics fic (also there’s more proposals (to come) in this series!! Bokuaka are next!!!!!)!

i'm not sure what this means, this ache in my chest (but i know you're the cause of it, every single time) - starbooms 5.3k words THEY ARE SO STUPID and I love how they share one braincell and want to confess to each other 0.1 second after they find out they like each other

2020 Fic Year in Review

I was tagged by @aurorawest and honestly this feels more like work right now, but I’m curious. I’m going to use AO3 primarily for these statistics, since I don’t have a better way to track them.

Total number of completed stories: 37, according to AO3, but I’m SO CLOSE to completing 38, but the only reason it’s not is due to the Big Bang posting schedule.

Total word count: 203,761. It’s higher, because I have little things here and there, but no way to track them.

Fandoms written in: FFXV, Free!, Haikyu!!, Attack on Titan, Chihayafuru, My Hero Academia, Run with the Wind.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected? Way more! I haven’t written this much, probably ever. I took a long break from writing after my daughter was born and was really able to get back into it this past year.

What’s your own favorite story of the year? I...don’t know. I’m really proud of Machine Gun (MHA), since it was the first multi-chapter that I finished in a reasonable amount of time. I also love Phantoms (Chihayafuru), and writing Accustomed to His Face (Haikyu!!) has been an absolute blast this year.

Did you take any writing risks this year? My biggest risk has honestly been writing for tiny or dead fandoms. Also Phantoms (Chihayafuru) was a really dark story compared to what I typically write. And the darkness dragged on and on for a while, so I didn’t know how people were going to respond to it! Thankfully, the response was positive.

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the new year? I just want to keep up with my writing. I’m also planning on writing in the 2021 Kagehina Big Bang, so I’m looking forward to that (I’ve already started writing). I have a sequel to  Machine Gun that I want to write as well, so we’ll see how that goes. Right now I’m working on a Yuki/Shindo (Run with the Wind) longfic that probably only a handful of people will read, but my goal is to complete and post it.

Most popular story of the year? Uh, again, going with AO3 stats. By hits and kudos, my most popular fic this year was  Machine Gun (I’m not counting Tales of Lucis, because most of the story was posted in 2017, and I just finished it this year).

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Um, probably Four-Letter Word (Free!). I had so much fun writing this one, even though it’s not terribly long, and I was honestly disappointed it got pretty much no love.

Most fun story to write: Definitely Accustomed to His Face. A Kagehina coffee shop AU that I thought of years ago and finally had the drive to finish through a Big Bang. I have loved working on it so much. I love Kageyama’s and Hinata’s dynamics, so getting to play around with that again after...uh, several years, was a lot of fun.

Most unintentionally telling story: Maybe Phantoms (Chihayafuru), since it dealt mostly with darker themes of self-worth and anxiety and generally feeling not good enough.

Biggest disappointment: Discovering Run with the Wind two years late, and now the fandom is super tiny. I want to write, write, write for this fandom, but there aren’t a lot of people who are reading it, unfortunately.

Biggest surprise: Honestly, that people are still reading what I’m writing and they think it’s pretty good. I’m in my mid-thirties, I have a toddler, and I work full time, so that fact that I’m even able to write is a miracle to me. Working remotely during the pandemic has helped, though, because I have a little more flexibility. I’m also surprised I wrote for so many fandoms this year! I feel like that’s an accomplishment. I’ll pat myself on the back for that lol.

i found self-insert by kvhottie on ao3 (would recommend if this ask gets posted!!) and it says the fic was inspired by you sending a fic to someone you knew irl on accident OMG ahhhh sounds totally like something i would do xD is it ok if i ask what happened after? :o

Oh my gosh… ahaha yes soooo it wasn’t quite as bad as the incident in that fic, but I have on occasion copy/pasted fic excerpts to co-workers while trying to send other stuff at work (where I do tend to write in my downtime). This is one of the examples that kicked off the idea for that fic, in which I sent the ending of Heaven Sent to my company’s CTO instead of a lunch menu:

XDDD it was actually okay because a) I DEFINITELY could have sent worse and b) almost everyone I work with knows me too well and this is like honestly not that surprising to them. He already knew I wrote fanfic at the time, I think. BUT yeah if anybody is ever reading my stuff and is wondering “why does Essie love to write mortifying situations so much” it’s because I, myself, am an embarrassment. BY THE WAY I too would recommend @dontperishyet‘s KageHina fic Self-Insert to people!!! It’s one of my fave concepts ever and absolutely hilarious (and I had a blast guest writing Hinata’s terrible smutfic excerpts that Kageyama has the misfortune of reading throughout the fic)! :D
