Ransom's Redemption, Chapter 16: Back to Reality-Holiday Rush (Chris Evans/Ransom Drysdale Fanfiction)
Chapter 16 Back to Reality – Holiday Rush
We weren’t sure if it was genius to open on Black Friday, but we hoped it was. Teatime Somewhere was ready. No one went home for Thanksgiving. The Millers even pitched in with helping to open the place, and the website had been up since mid-month.
We had a Friendsgiving at the building, Amaira did not disappoint. She did the turkey and tarts, Mimi did the macaroni and cheese and sweet potato pie, Mrs. Miller did Brussel sprouts and corn on the cob, and Natalie baked potatoes and made a special sauce go with them and also made a small sundae station on the side. It was kind of funny, in a way, as I looked around this table of people. We truly had a family right in this little building. We had the elderly Millers, the grandparents of the brownstone. We ran around each other’s apartments as if they were bedrooms, especially when we resolved to stay home for Thanksgiving.
Tumblr media
“Cool, I think we’re ready!” I said with a grin. My stomach was growling.
“Everybody take your seats!” Amaira grins as Sy carries out the turkey. It was huge, like at least twenty pounds.
I didn’t know where to sit. I honestly didn’t know!
I promptly sit on one of the side chairs. Sy and Amaira keep the food coming out, but I felt like laughing when I saw that he set that bird right in front of him.
“Sy—y!” Amaira laughs.
“What?!” Sy answers. “I’m hungry!”
I shake my head at him.
Mr. Miller clears his throat and gets my attention. “Aren’t you gonna sit at the head, boy?”
“Not ready,” I chuckle. “Please take the head of the table. You deserve it.”
“Yeah, sit down, Unc,” Sy nods. “I don’t think Ransom can say a good grace!”
Amaira shakes her head at him.
“Seriously, though, Mr. Miller, you're the elder, don’t nobody deserve it.” Sy reminds.
“You served.” Uncle Rick says.
“You did, too.” Sy grins.
“Alright, I guess—Uncle Rick—will take the seat, then!” Mr. Miller-now Uncle Rick nodded.
“And Aunt Joanna,” Mrs. Miller, now Aunt Joanna nods. “Oooh, I like that.”
It was like one of those holiday dinners I see on TV, or the ones I had with Mimi and Mom before I had to go through the cold ordeal of sitting with blood relatives. We laughed, we spilled, we talked, we even debated and bickered a little. Sy and I seem to have cornered the market on that.
“Hey, preppy, ya ready?”
Tumblr media
I look at Sy, who is bright eyed and bushy tailed being a veteran. I look out the window of Teatime Somewhere and see a crowd gathered outside. Our grand opening deal was free coffee and tea from 5am to 7am, and after that free with purchase of a pastry or sandwich. Tea and coffee are not a lot to pay for. My phone chimes and I read the text.
Good Luck Today. Mom.
“You okay?”
I look at Mimi, swallowing hard. “Mom wishes us luck.” I wish she was here, but I didn’t come to Thanksgiving either. I wasn’t invited, and I wouldn’t know where to go since Marta took over the mansion.
Mimi kisses my cheek. “We’ll see her before the end of the year.”
“You think so?”
“I can feel it,” Mimi whispers. “You’re her only child. She’s not going to let the holidays go by now that you’re back.” I want to remind her that I haven’t seen Mom since the day they sentenced me, that I don’t want to hope she cares, but Mimi clucks her tongue at me, and kisses me on the lips. “You’ll see.”
“Babe?” Sy calls.
Tumblr media
“Huh?” Amaira looks like she is either going to faint or freak out. Sy and I lock eyes and he goes to her.
“Hey, you ready?” Sy asks, taking her hands in his. He chuckles as she puts an apron on him.
“I think so,” Amaira begins going to through her checklist again. By now we all know it by heart and start singing it to The Twelve Days of Christmas. “You guys are so mean!”
“Honey, everything’s ready, locked and loaded,” Sy smiles down at her. “Come here.”
“But this is important—”
He kisses her. “You’re right, it is, baby, and you are ready for this. And we’re all here and ready to make sure this goes without a hitch. Your food is gonna be the talk of Jamaica Plains.” He holds her, patting her bum gently, and making her giggle. “That’s my girl.” He looks at us. “Let’s rock ‘n’ roll, people.”
The doors open and people are all over the place. I am suddenly glad Sy and Aunt Joanna are running security, which is basically helping customers. Sy is getting all kinds of female attention, and he proudly points at Amaira, who is working behind the counter with Mimi. Uncle Rick is really having fun offering small samples. Me? I’m doing whatever needs to be done, and trying to hang back and watch for anything that needs to be fixed or tweaked.
Tumblr media
“How did we get all these people?” Sy asks as he gets ready to open the door.
“Let’s see,” Mimi thinks aloud. “We advertised at the Halloween event, the neighborhood paper, did I miss anything?”
“I can’t think of a thing,” I tell her. “Uncle Rick, Aunt Jo? Glad you’re here.”
“We’re ready, boy,” Rick nods.
The doors open and things are crazy for the first few hours. We cannot believe it. A small group of carolers stopped in front, and people stopped in. Feeling bad for the quartet, we invite them in and give them free breakfast. They were pretty cool, and I immediately book them to come by and sing a few times a week during the holidays. I offered a free meal for each person plus a gift card from the store. They took it. We basically are paying three times a week for the next month in food and drink for a bit of live entertainment for the holidays.
The local morning news shows up and that is a pleasant surprise. I send Amaira out right away. She’s shy at first, but as she starts talking about the history of tea, and the interesting pastries she makes, she brightens. Sy stands by her smiling proudly and basically smiles and waves for the most part, assists her. Watching them gives me the warm fuzzies.
“We also hear you have a silent partner?” the reporter asks.
“Silent-oh, you mean Ransom!” Amaira grins. “Hey!”
I step backward. I am afraid that my name and face could ruin things. I am a ex-convict, after all.
“Come on, boy!” Sy encourages.
I step into camera frame. “Hi.”
The reporter introduces herself and asks, “How did you get into the tea and baking business?”
“Serendipity,” I nod. “Amaira lives in our building—”
“Our building?”
“Yes, she’s my wife’s friend,” I went on. “and—”
“You’re married?!”
“Just a couple of weeks ago, actually.”
“Congratulations, that must have been a quick courtship.”
“Actually we have known each other since we were kids,” I say quickly. “Anyway, my wife raved about Amaira’s cooking and pastries. We had a few parties in our basement, and I thought, ‘she’s got talent.’ So we put our heads together for this concept and here we are.”
“And how does it feel to be on the cover of Boston Art Today?”
“What?”
“You are on the cover of Boston Art Today—” the reporter extends her hand out of camera shot and an assistant hands the magazine cover.
Tumblr media
“Whoa, babe!” I call.
“What?”
“Look!” I pull her to my side and show her the magazine cover. “I didn’t know I made cover!”
Mimi kisses my cheek and gives me a side squeeze. “Proud of you. You’re not exactly hard on the eyes, you know.”
“As long as I’m easy on yours, babe,” I kiss her temple as she looks down at the cover.
“Well, welcome home, Ransom,” the reporter says softly. “Looks like 2022 is gonna be something.”
“Hope so,” I shrug, smiling. “Happy holidays to you.”
“Happy Holidays to you, too!” she grins and turns back to the camera. “When we come back, we will listen to the quartet putting Christmas back into Black Friday, take a look at the tea party room and—try some goodies! See you soon!”

Dean hadn’t realized how terrified he was of facing his father until he broke down at Jo’s. It hadn’t felt like something he would ever have to do until then. Now, it felt as inevitable as a death sentence.
John had always been a huge force in Dean’s life, but since he had gotten hurt to the point of disability, he was less of a presence and more of an imprint. Letting down his folks was the ultimate sin, one Dean had fought his whole life to resist. He knew they loved him, but would it be enough for them to see beyond the idea of Dean they had in their heads. Could they love a pansy?
His mother would be easier to bring on board; he was her favorite whether she’d admit it or not. On the other hand, John was a Marine, he was a mechanic; he didn’t deal with feelings or things he thought were reckless, selfish choices. Dean had never been selfish a day in his life, but this was something that seemed worth it. Benny was worth it. Dean couldn’t give up on family, and he needed them in his corner if it was going to work at all.
First, Dean just needed to get the words out.
The wind whipped through the neighborhood he grew up in like a child unleashed upon the playground. Direction and speed split its focus until it stilled long enough to move on to the next distraction. Dean parked on the street, letting the familiar siding and newer front door center him as he approached, trying to ignore the uneasiness that was unfurling in his gut. Sam was having lunch with some guys from high school who were in town early for Thanksgiving, granting Dean this window of privacy.
Not that Dean told Sam anything. He had done enough talking at Jo’s, even Benny didn’t know everything that he’d been processing the last few days. He hadn’t wanted to make any promises. Dean walked into the house, calling out his greeting, never one to knock at home. John was parked in front of the television in the living room while Mary sent her welcome from somewhere in the basement.
“Hey! Talk about timing, lunch is just about done,” John teased. “What brings you ‘round? Sammy’s out for the day.”
“Yeah, Dad, I know. Kinda why I came,” Dean shoved his hands in the pockets of jeans, still standing.
“Jayhawks are playing at two if you wanna stay,” John offered. Dean hummed in uncertainty. John dragged his feet from the ottoman to sit up and face Dean better. “Is everything alright?”
“Yeah, nothing we can’t talk about over lunch. I’m gonna go see if Mom needs anything,” Dean nodded towards the basement steps and left John to his football.
Dean bowed his head as he reached the bottom of the steps, clearing the duct work to find Mary folding laundry at the long narrow table they used for everything from school projects to writing out Christmas cards.
“I thought that was you,” Mary said pleasantly. “Did your dad tell you lunch was almost ready?”
She dropped the shirt she had finished atop an awkward pile and opened her arms for a hug. Dean scooped her up, probably a little too enthusiastically, but he didn’t care and she didn’t mind. A simple gasp told him she noticed though.
“So--- what’s the occasion?” Mary asked, turning back to the basket.
“Nothing really, just wanted to catch up,” Dean downplayed, grabbing a pair of jeans to help. Neither of them pointed out that they’d see each other the next day for Sunday dinner. Mary welcomed the visit as much as Dean was dreading it.
“Your father had physical therapy yesterday. I don’t think they get paid enough,” Mary conspired with a heavy side eye.
Dean chuckled, “I’m guessing not his at least.”
“And supposedly I’m the stubborn one,” Mary muttered. “If you want to make some sandwiches, I’m almost done down here. I don’t want to spread the soup too thin.”
Dean nodded and handed her the sweater he had folded last. “Sounds good, anything in particular?”
“Just don’t let him trick you into letting him have the salami, his doctor says he needs to watch the fats,” Mary warned.
Dean perched against the edge of the steps, listening. He slapped the banister and headed back upstairs. “On it.”
The kitchen’s layout hadn’t changed in thirty years and Dean quickly set up an assembly line with poultry, condiments, lettuce and tomatoes. He tucked the cheese with the processed deli meat back in the drawer, hiding the temptation from John. But not before stealing a slice for his and Mary’s sandwiches. He set the table, like hundreds of times before. John’s spot was the head of the table, Mary to his left. Dean set his own plate on John’s right, a seat he fought Sam for more often than not.
Dean stirred the pot, which was much more a vat, of chicken noodle soup. John’s approach was announced by the steady clink of his cane on the hardwood floor of the hallway. Dean pulled out John’s chair before settling down to his heaping sandwich and extra large bowl of soup.
John lifted the top tier of his sandwich, judging the contents. “She got to you, didn’t she?”
Dean just chewed purposely and gave John innocent eyes.
“Figures,” John muttered before bellowing through the house. “Mary! Soup’s ready.”
They ate comfortably, fighting the cold outside with the warmth of the familiarity of a shared meal. The grease from the chicken made bubbles in the broth and Dean blew across the surface mixing them back in. Meanwhile Mary made small talk and John teased her about her part time job.
“Well, I need to get out of the house, or we’d kill each other, you know that,” Mary flicked John’s ear as she cleared their bowls.
“How’s that going?” Dean asked, eyes fixed on his mother’s face. Panic clogged his ears at the thought of never seeing her again.
“‘S fine. People are picky, but it isn’t bad for what it is. Better than being behind a desk or answering the phone,” Mary explained of her work at the local sporting goods store. “Friday will be nuts, lots of sales, but it’s not like we would have been doing anything anyway.”
“So, Bobby and Ellen’s on Thursday?” Dean verified.
“Yup, dinner’s at 1. He says you’re on pie duty?” John asked, surprised.
“That I am. Sam’s stuck with sides, so please remind him. I don’t want to show up and only have rolls and turkey,” Dean asked Mary.
“Can do. We’re bringing the---,” Mary started.
“Cranberry sauce,” Dean and John said in unison.
“And the wine!” Mary said in dismay at their laughter. “Jerks.”
John and Dean grinned as Mary rolled her eyes.
“So, was that everything? It seemed like you had something to hash out with us,” John asked Dean, picking up the last of his sandwich.
“Yeah, mostly. I gotta check with Ellen first, but I might be bringing somebody along,” Dean rushed out. He tipped his bowl back, finishing the final dregs.
“A special someone?” Mary asked delicately, looking at John in hope.
“Yeah, you could say that,” Dean grunted, standing to grab another sandwich.
“Well, is it somebody we know?” Mary prodded, not trying to be too pushy, but obviously curious. “Dean, why are we just now hearing about this?”
Mary’s tone had shifted to apprehension, Dean felt their silent conversation behind his back as he slapped the ingredients together. He shrugged in response, unable to find a proper jumping off point.
He tried to remain casual, but the dred had clawed back up. Without enough wherewithal to speak, Dean sat back down and ate, drawing out his confession to the point of confusion.
John chuckled at Mary’s suspicion. “He’s nervous. Let the boy get it out.”
Dean rolled his eyes at the phrase. “I’m thirty six, Dad,” he said through a mouthful.
“Is that right? Coulda fooled me.” John tisked his tongue. Mary ignored his teasing tone.
“Dean, what’s the matter? What’s this girl’s problem that’s making you act so--- cagey all the sudden?” Mary asked anxiously. John slipped Mary’s hand into his, silently soothing her as they waited for Dean’s answer.
“Uh, yeah, about that,” Dean started, sitting back, and shooting for blase. “Turns out I actually like guys, too. So, uh, there’s no problem with a girl. I just wanted to bring, um, this guy I’ve been seeing, Benny, to Bobby and Ellen’s.”
Mary inhaled and clenched John’s hand. John stopped stroking Mary’s arm and twisted in his seat. Dean exhaled slowly, like a pin prick in a deflating balloon, he couldn’t take any of it back. Dean took a chance and looked out through his lashes, face tilted towards his plate. First to Mary’s blue worry and then a flicker to John’s almost black disbelief.
John swallowed and ducked low enough to force Dean’s eyes onto his. "You tellin' me you take it up the ass, is that what you're sayin?"
"Jesus. John!" Mary reproached. But neither man's glare faltered. The dark challenge in John's eyes caused Dean's lips to turn up in a silent snarl.
Dean finally broke the silence. "You really want me to answer that?"
"I think I have a right to know exactly the kind of man my son is," John countered.
Mary stood abruptly. “He's your son! What's the matter with you?! You asking Sam his jerkin' habits now that he's single, while you're at it?!" She went to the sink, bowing over it as if it would cleanse the images the conversation had conjured.
“Oh, hell, that’s not the point,” John muttered.
Dean had been arrested in high school for drag racing. The whole ride home from the police station he was worried what his dad was gonna do to him once they got home, it was the same quiet rage that had terrified Dean as a child. But it was Mary’s disappointment when they walked in the door that tore into Dean to the point of scarring. He could live with his father’s anger, Sam had taught Dean how to slowly stand up to John over the years.
But Dean didn’t know if he could live in the shadow of Mary’s disappointment. He needed somebody to see him as himself, not just a screw up or a queer.
Dean sighed. "I am your son. But if you can't handle this, Dad. I don't think you have any right to know me anymore." He looked from Mary to John as the last sentence left his mouth. Maybe he was asking too much after all.
Everyone in the room froze. But not even an ultimatum like that could stop John Winchester from digging himself deeper. "Christ, son, Jo really did a number on you, didn't she? Made you turn tail to the other team all together."
"Leave Jo out of this,” Dean spit out as he stood up. “This is about me and who I'm with now." He stalked the long way around the table, shoving chairs in as he went. He approached Mary alone, carefully, one terrified animal to another. "You'd love him, Mom. He cooks, runs his own business, even got an old Harley in the garage."
Mary couldn't hide her tears, but she tried to smile through them for Dean's sake. "Sounds like a catch, sweetie. But what matters is if you love him. You don't need our say so."
"Don't I?" Dean replied sadly before glancing over Mary’s shoulder to John. "You know Jo told me to give you the finger if you couldn’t see how happy I am. How important Benny is to me. And maybe she's right. But I wanted this to work. I wanted to keep the family together. That's why I'm here. The rest is up to you, Old Man."
Dean kissed his mother on the cheek, between murmured reassurances and left without another word to John. He teetered on the brink, somewhere between busting his knuckles against the cold glass of the impala’s window and losing his lunch on the frostbitten ground. Somehow, Dean made it into the solitude of the driver’s seat before he broke down and sobbed. The only saving grace he got was when his mother's voice roared from inside the house.
Dean dragged the salt and snot from his face with a heavy palm and started the engine. He couldn't stay there, but he didn't know where to go either. He just drove.
Tumblr media
Dean pulled into the parking lot at The Pearly Gates on autopilot. He’d spent the afternoon equally suppressing and dissecting his conversation with his parents as he kept it even between the lines of two lane country roads. Now, Dean was ready to be somebody else, to make drinks and flirt and just forget everything that had happened.
The college football crowd was winding down, which allowed Dean some time to catch up with the day shift bartenders Garth and Jody. Back before Cas got blindsided with the responsibility of business ownership, Cas, Dean, Ash and Artie would claim a booth near the pool tables and blow their grocery money every weekend. When Sam moved back after law school he and Mick joined the crowd that were regularly praised for paying for Jody’s son’s braces.
Garth had been the first dragged from the friend pool to fill the schedule when Cas’s brother dropped off the face of the earth. Though Garth volunteered, Dean knew it was just out of the goodness of his heart, not a need for extra cash.
“Here he is!” Garth announced Dean’s arrival. Luckily for Dean, Garth was pouring a beer otherwise he would have been wrapped in one of Garth’s spider monkey-like hugs. A few regulars in the corner raised their glasses to Dean in greeting as he passed by with his company smile. Jody whipped by him, fresh out of the stock room with her arms full of their dollar bags of chips they sold to keep from having to run a full kitchen.
“Look who’s early,” Jody exclaimed before dropping the load onto the back counter. “You trying to cut into my time there, Winchester?”
“You know if you ever want more hours, you just gotta ask,” Dean offered suggestively, strolling behind the bar.
Jody sputtered dramatically, “And work nights? No, thank you.”
“It was worth a shot,” Dean replied, shrugging at Garth who knew better.
Jody sighed and cocked her head. “You’re cute, but you’re not that cute.”
Dean ducked his head against the compliment as she patted his arm apologetically.
“Want me to split your tips before you go?” Dean asked, bending out of his jacket.
“That’d be lovely,” Jody answered, sorting the chips by kind. “Garth get’s an extra twenty because Bess and Donna were ‘round.”
“Look at you, Mr. Slick,” Dean teased as he grabbed the old milk bottle filled with mostly singles. Garth blushed.
“You know what they say Dean-o, flattery is everything,” Garth explained. Dean, who routinely had the most tips out of any of the staff, including Bela, just nodded at the quirky dude. Dean doled out their shares and washed up before officially punching in.
Jody was gone as soon as Anna arrived, but Garth waited for Jack to show before leaving her and Dean on their own. It was seven o’clock before Cas arrived instead of his unreliable nephew.
“Everything alright?” Dean asked knowingly as Cas hung his trench coat on a broken notch on the rail beside the server’s station.
“Jack is under the weather,” Cas explained blandly. Dean eyed the windows, taking in the light flurries that danced in the streetlight. “I guess I’ll have to do tonight.”
It was a surprisingly unremarkable shift, the weather kept traffic bearable even after Anna’s shift ended at midnight. Dean walked her out the back to her car, like he always did as the plow eased out of the parking lot.
“You gonna be alright with him for the rest of the night?” Anna whispered before they breached the cold. Her big brown eyes held more mischief than worry.
“Goodnight, Anna,” Dean drew out as he held the door sternly.
“Night, Dean,” Anna chuckled. Dean watched her tiptoe around the icy patches and make it to her old Tahoe. He made sure it started before heading back behind the bar, and three more hours with Castiel.
The speakers were set lower than usual to balance their minimal customers. On his shifts, Dean had always insisted on having control over the musical selection. So when he walked into a pop singer’s version of mopey folk he did a double take before bee lining for the stereo.
“Please, don’t,” Cas’s simply requested from somewhere to Dean’s right. “I kind of like this song, but more importantly one of the customer’s requested a change of station.”
Dean eyed the patrons like suspects in a line up, uncertain who would blaspheme in such a way. No one seemed particularly guilty and he had to let it go. Between drinks, Dean washed glasses in the small sink behind the bar until Cas was finally able to start his nightly paperwork. The last couple paid their tab just after 1:30, leaving them holding their breaths in hope as they started to put up the chairs.
“Is it often this quiet?” Cas wondered aloud, “I don’t recall Saturday’s business to dwindle so.”
Dean smiled to himself; leave it to Cas to look a gift horse of a slow night in the mouth. “No, man, this is not the usual. But, it worked out. And thanks for filling in for the kid, I know you don’t like getting your hands dirty.”
Cas quietly beamed at Dean’s gratitude before pausing at the not so subtle jab at the end. They went through the remaining end of day routine in silence. Dean turned off the faux neon signs in the windows to signal the early close as Cas handled the money. Dean would usually even out the till and split tips with Jack, leaving the deposit for Cas to handle the next day. Instead he was left with cleaning detail as the boss man did the accounting.
Before long Dean was rolling the dirty mop bucket back to the office/store room/ kitchen/ employee area. Exhaustion had eaten at Dean’s internal walls, leaving him on the slippery edge between slap-happy and zombie. He hummed to keep his eyes open, waiting on Cas to finally call it a night and let Dean clock out.
“We don’t talk anymore,” Cas said abruptly, without looking up from the cash machine. Dean’s head shot up, concern furrowing his features. “In fact, I’m prone to think you don’t like me at all, Dean.”
“What do you mean, we’re talking right now,” Dean downplayed defensively. Cas glanced up over his desk, mild surprise evident. Cas always seemed such a mystery to Dean, from his social awkwardness to his blunt observations. Dean had come to envy Cas’s almost innocent lack of need to perform for others, to be anyone but himself. He had forgotten that Cas would read into his demeanor in the uncanniest of ways.
“True, we are. But are we?” Cas typed the code into the safe and waited for the time delayed entry. “We used to hang out, watch football, play pool, or cards even.”
“We’ve got bowling every week, man,” Dean wrung out the mophead and latched it onto the rack on the wall. He was trying to remember the last time he and Cas had fun, just the two of them and couldn’t recall a single occurrence over the past year.
“I miss you. I miss my friend,” Cas replied sadly. “And I don’t know what I did to ruin it, but I want you to know that I didn’t mean to.”
Dean closed his eyes and grimaced. “Hey, no, it’s not like that,” Dean started. He walked over and leaned against the edge of the desk, assertive reassurance written all over his face. “Look, I’m tired. Working all week and then coming here is kicking my ass. So I don’t have a lot of free time or brain capacity to hang out like we used to. But I’m doing my best, man.”
Cas looked like a confused puppy, eyes drooping and head tilted. “That isn’t it. There’s something else, something you’re not telling me?”
Dean huffed and shook his head, hands raised in exasperation. “I don’t know what you want me to say. I like you, okay? We’re still--- you know--- buddies.”
“Buddies,” Cas said it like it was a war crime.
“Yeah, man, friends. Do you need me to pull up a dictionary on my phone?!” Dean was getting anxious. He didn’t know what exactly had set Cas down this path of questioning, but he was certain he needed it to end. So much for a quiet night.
After a few weighted stares, Cas squinted and turned them down a different path. “Did me employing you negatively affect our relationship? Should I not have asked that of you?”
“Wait, that would have stopped you?” Dean asked, surprised by Cas’s sudden, if extremely late, realization.
“I wouldn’t knowingly do anything to hurt our friendship, Dean. Has working here hindered you?” Cas asked apologetically.
Dean’s mouth dropped open and his shoulders slumped. “Yeah, man. Working here--- everyone is great, don’t get me wrong--- but man I need a break. I wanted to help out here or there, but I’ve got no time for a life if I stay on.”
“I see,” Cas sat back, poorly masking his own discomfort with Dean’s confession. “Look, I know I’m not the best at what I do. But I find it very hard to trust new people. Employees, especially, tend to let me down. I guess--- I guess I’ve relied on you for too long, Dean. I’m sorry if I’ve taken advantage.”
Dean chuckled. “To be honest, I wouldn’t have minded if you had.”
Missing the joke, Cas continued, “I am taking this conversation as your verbal resignation. I hope you will stay on for the customary two weeks time?”
    “You’re serious?” Dean asked, stunned.
“You’re unhappy. I don’t want to cause you anymore grief,” Cas replied simply.
“It wasn’t that bad, Cas.--- But, you gotta do something about Jack. Man up and light a fire under his ass, or just kick him to the curb until he’s ready to live up to the family business. You need to hire people who want to be here,” Dean offered.
Cas nodded dejectedly. “I know, I just have an awful gauge for people’s reliability from a simple interview. And past employers rarely ‘spill the tea’ as Bela would say.”
Dean giggled, but stopped himself once he saw the worry in Cas’ eyes. “Hey, what if somebody does the interviews for you? I bet Jody would weed out the bad seeds before their asses ever hit the bar stool.”
Cas was surprised by that option. “That could work. She is very intimidating.”
“Right?!” Dean exclaimed, feeling lighter than he had in a long time. “So, we’re really doing this? Two weeks and I’m out?”
“Yes, Dean. You’ve done more than I should have asked of you.” Cas stood and extended his hand.
Dean grabbed it and pulled Cas in for a hug, their bound hands stuck between them. “Thanks, man. But, I’m glad it worked out. It will work out. This is gonna be good.”
“And we’ll---,” Cas asked as they broke apart.
“We’ll still be friends. Hell, if I’m free maybe we can reclaim our old table every once in a while,” Dean offered, patting Cas’s shoulder. A genuine smile crept across Dean’s face for the first time all day.
“I’d like that,” Cas admitted as the safe alerted his time was up.

The next morning, Sam held the door for Dean who was smirking as they walked in. Exhausted and needing the comfort of his favorite diner to fill his empty stomach, Dean agreed to Sunday breakfast with a seemingly none-the-wiser Sam, certain he'd be missing their weekly dinner with his parents for possibly the first time.
"Not that one. Let's see if there's a spot in the back," Sam muttered as Dean tried sitting in the first open booth he saw.
"What? Why?" Dean groaned, but straightened up and followed Sam passed the bustling counter.
Sam lifted his chin and motioned Dean to the second to last spot. Slightly annoyed, Dean threw himself onto the bench seat, only to have Sam slide beside him, caging him in.
"Glad you boys could make it," the all too familiar drawl of their father's voice greeted them from across the table.
Dean looked at Sam and cursed beneath his breath. Sam had the nerve to look guilty, but his puppy dog eyes didn't hold an ounce of potency now.
"Wow, Dad, I had no idea you'd be here. Funny coincidence, hey, Sammy?" Dean snarked.
"Shut up," Sam grumbled.
"I made him drag you here, Dean. So if you wanna be pissed, be pissed at me," John began. "I ordered your usuals, to give us some privacy. It seems we need to talk."

Chapter 10
Stark Spangled Banner Masterlist // Main Masterlist
Tumblr media
November 2013
News of Katie’s spectacular resignation spread like wildfire through the Triskellion. Evans, Lawson, Natasha and Clint had all been pretty upset but had understood when she had explained why she was doing it, even if Natasha didn’t necessarily agree. They had no intention of letting her go quietly, however, and the team took it upon themselves to organise a small Leaving do at Lori’s which was in full swing. Background music was playing, food had arrived and the drinks were flowing. Steve was talking to Lawson, Rumlow and Evans by the bar, leaning against it, an easy smile on his face as Katie stood with Clint and Natasha a bit further down the bar as Clint was talking to them about his latest home improvement plan.
“So I thought about putting in a pool.” Clint mused, “Now the kids are bigger I thought it might be nice to have one. Maybe even a pool house round it for bad weather.”
“How ambitious.” Nat quirked an eyebrow.
Clint grinned. “That’s my middle name.”
“Really?” Katie asked. “I always thought it was Robert.”
“What?” Clint looked at her as Nat snorted out a laugh.  "Francis.  Why would you think its Robert?“
Katie shrugged "You look like a Bob.”
“Wait… so it’s not Ambitious?” Nat asked, winking at Katie. “How boring.”
Katie nodded, draining her glass.  "Bob would have been better.”
"Right,” Clint started, pulling himself taller. “I hate both of you.”
The girls laughed and Nat turned to Katie. “So what’s in the pipeline for you now Nova?” “I have no idea.” Katie shrugged and she didn’t. “I guess I’ll just get more involved in the family business.”
“You gonna move to New York?” Clint asked. She shook her head. “Probably spend a bit more time there but, I’m not moving back.”
“Nah, she can’t leave lover boy.” Natasha looked at Clint and Katie rolled her eyes. Truth is Nat had hit the nail on the head. No way was she leaving Steve in DC to move back to the tower. Although they had only been together seven months she had spent over a year of her life being ‘with him’ one way or another and the thought of him not being there terrified her.
“You know, to be fair Nat, they’ve been going out a while now. Things are probably starting to cool off.” Clint teased “Oh trust me, there’s no problems in that department.” Katie sniggered, looking over to where Steve was stood.
“And would you look at that. I’m out of alcohol…” Nat said, suddenly “And so is Stark.”
“There’s a bar over there,” Clint pointed
“Cheers…”Natasha took Katie’s glass and handed it to him along with her own. Clint shook his head taking the glasses with a sigh.
“So… now he’s gone…” Nat glanced over at Steve then back to Katie “Gimme details…”
“Details on what?”
“Throw me a bone here Stark. I’m working on a dry spell.”
“Why are you so obsessed with my sex life?” Katie groaned. “You’re constantly trying to get me to talk about it.”
“Hey, look, up until a few months ago I was convinced he was a virgin.”
“Well then you’re a dumbass.” Katie smirked “Like I said, he’s Captain America, had girls throwing themselves at him back in the day.” “So he was until the serum?”
“I never said that.” Katie flushed.
“You’re such a shit liar.”
“Can we change the subject?”
“Ok, answer me one question and then I’ll drop it.” Nat pressed.
“What?” Katie snapped with an air of playful frustration. If she was honest, it was quite nice to have a girlfriend to chat to about these kind of secrets.
“Did the serum enhance…everything?” Nat wiggled her eyebrows.
Katie glanced over at Steve and smirked before she looked back at her. Fuck it.
“Well if it didn’t, I’ve no idea how he managed to stay upright before.” she smirked "I’m a lucky woman”
The red head threw back her head in a dirty laugh, a laugh that Katie had never heard from her before and it made her snigger at the sight of the normally composed assassin letting loose.
“What I miss?” Clint asked as he reappeared, handing them their drinks.
“I’ll explain when you’re older…” Nat said, patting his chest fondly.
*****
The next two weeks flashed by and before they knew it, it was the morning before thanksgiving and they were at the Tower in New York. Last year Katie and Steve had spent Thanksgiving as friends. This year they were spending it as lovers, and Katie was also excited to be spending it with Tony, although she would never admit that out loud.
Steve was also looking forward to it as well. Tony had mellowed to him somewhat over the past few months, especially when he had found out Steve was supporting Katie’s decision to quit SHIELD and not trying to stop her as he had original thought the Captain would. He was also looking forward to Katie’s damned fine cooking as well. Despite the fact that Tony had offered to cater in as Pepper was away until the very last minute, his girl had insisted on cooking it herself, especially now she had plenty of time on her hands.
As such, Steve and Tony had left her in the kitchen area of the main living quarters at midday to head down to the lab to discuss some further upgrades to the Tower. When they left Katie had been surrounded by bags of flour and ingredients, and when Steve returned he found her at just gone 5:30 surrounded by 3 pies (one apple, one pumpkin and one blackberry) pans of vegetables prepped ready for the and a turkey in the oven ready for JARVIS to turn on in the morning. She was stood at the sink, gently humming, the kitchen now clean and the smell of her baking making his mouth water.
“What are you doing Soldier?” Katie asked, jumping a little as Steve’s arms came around her sides, reaching for the sink, effectively trapping her between the counter and his body.
He laid his chin on her shoulder. “The dishes,”
“I’m only leaving the pie dish to soak.” She informed him, turning her head to give him a quick kiss. “The rest are going in the Dishwasher.”
“Oh because God forbid her majesty would actually wash a dish.” He teased and she rolled her eyes.
“You don’t wash them much either. How many brushes did you break last week?”
“The plastic is bad quality.” Steve pouted.
“Nothing to do with your ridiculously large hands being too rough.” “You weren’t complaining last night.” He grinned, lips warm against her neck as he gently nipped under her ear. Katie squirmed a little and then swatted him in the face with the dishtowel, and he laughed out loud.
“Seriously though Doll face, are you nearly done? You’ve been in here all afternoon. You do know we’re not eating till 3 tomorrow, right?” His hands squeezed her hips and she tossed the dishcloth down and turned to face him, her hands sliding up his chest to his shoulders.
“Yeah but the more I do now, the less I have to do tomorrow, and let’s face it, it’s not like I have anything else to do, on account of being an unemployed bum.” She shrugged making Steve laugh again.  “Plus, I just want everything to be, you know…right.” she shrugged, and she did.
“It’s a dinner.”
“It’s Thanksgiving” She corrected him.
“Yeah, and last years was pretty cool, remember?”
“Yeah but…” she trailed off, biting her lip. Steve knew that look well enough now to know there was more to this.
“What?” He probed gently.
“Nothing, just, well I never had a boyfriend over for Thanksgiving before. Or Christmas come to think of it.”
Steve smiled “I like being your first…” Katie grinned. The whole ‘I like being your first’ thing had started off by her saying it to Steve but they’d fast come to realise that they actually both had a world of inexperience between them when it came to relationships, and it was nice that they could be each other’s firsts in a lot of ways.  “Honey, tomorrow is gonna be great.” He assured, tipping her face up to look at his “Don’t sweat it.”
“Did you seriously just say don’t sweat it?” she sniggered.
Steve groaned “I told you I spent the afternoon with your brother…”
She giggled and leaned up to catch his lips in a soft kiss.
“Getting kinda tired of catching you two making out in a kitchen!” Tony chose that time to waltz in and open the fridge door, pointing to them as he did so. “You got your own floor, piss off and go use it.” ******
Katie woke the next morning to find Steve’s side of the bed empty and cold. It wasn’t unusual for him to be up earlier than her, she knew he would either be out running, in the gym or making coffee. She climbed out of bed and walked to the blinds of the bedroom, instructing JARVIS to open them, the AI being one of the many perks about being 'home’. The New York skyline stretched below her and as she glanced down she saw the people gathered on the sidewalks, attention turned to the streets, obviously waiting for the Thanksgiving Parade. She had asked Steve if he wanted to go and watch it in person but he had said he would prefer to stay in and watch from the tower as he didn’t fancy getting mobbed in the street. Being recognised by one person every so often was fine but in those crowds if one person spotted him then it would spread like wildfire. Besides, as he had pointed out, her floor had an awesome view so they could watch out of the window with a drink. Katie frowned as suddenly a large brown turkey shaped balloon floated in front of her eyes. The parade wasn’t supposed to start until nine and that meant by the time it made its way to the Avengers tower it would be… she turned and glanced at the click and gave a yelp. She had slept in until Ten.
Steve heard her before he saw her, not that he needed super hearing to hear the loud yell of "how fucking late?” coming from the bedroom. Grinning to himself he turned back to the griddle on the island of the kitchen, flipping a pancake with one hand and drinking a coffee with the other. “Why didn’t you wake me?” Katie grumbled to him as she leaned in the kitchen doorway, taking him in for a moment. He was freshly showered, dressed in a loose grey t-shirt and sweats, hair still a bit damp and spiked up in a way that made her smile. “Because you were up early yesterday and I thought I’d make you breakfast for a change.” He shrugged as she wrapped her arms around his waist, pressing her face into the back of his shoulder. The smell of his shower gel mixed with the smell of the pancake mix, made her nuzzle her nose into him to inhale deeply. “You smell good.” She eventually spoke again. “Good to know.” A grin tugged at the corners of his lips at the fact she was still clinging to him. “I just saw a giant inflatable Turkey.” Her hands dropped and slid under his T-shirt, gently rubbing at his stomach. “What?” Steve paused. “The parade”
Steve smiled. “You know when I was a kid, the parade was the best part of Thanksgiving.” “Yeah?” she mumbled, her cheek still pressed to his shoulder.
“Yeah. Me and Bucky used to come into Manhattan with his family and my ma if she wasn’t working and stuff ourselves on popcorn and warm mixed nuts” He smiled to himself at the memory. They always picked out their favourite balloons, ate until they thought they would burst, and made Rebecca, Bucky’s younger sister laugh till she cried by pretending they were in the marching bands. But once the war started, the parade had ended. He had never realized that they started it up again until Tony and Katie had mentioned it last night as they had sat eating takeout. Part of him had wanted to go to the street to watch it but after seeing that morning how crowded it had been on his run he was happy to watch it from the comfort of Katie’s floor. He turned to face her for first time that day, her arms still round his waist. Her hair was pulled up into a pony tail, face fresh, eyes bright and she was, as ever, in one of his shirts and not a lot else. He leaned forward to give her a quick kiss and when he moved away, she quickly closed the space to give him another, letting her lips linger on his for a second. “I’ll burn the pancakes.” He murmured and she grinned, pulling away. “I’ll make fresh coffee.” She pat his chest and turned to the machine. “Hey JAR…Hit me with some Christmas tunes, buddy” “The usual Miss Stark?” “As long as it has the Pogues on…” “Wouldn’t dream of not doing” the AI replied and then the apartment was flooded with the sounds of ‘Fairy Tale of New York.’ “It’s November.” Steve turned to look at her, but she simply grinned to herself and turned around, singing to him. He couldn’t help but laugh, he knew from last year that Christmas for her started at Thanksgiving and ended on New Year’s Day. Plus the fact that the previous year she had spent Christmas day fighting a bunch of exploding super soldiers meant that she was going to enjoy this year as much as possible. He shook his head, a low chuckle escaping before he turned back to his pancakes. They dragged the cushions off the couch and ate breakfast sat by the huge floor to ceiling windows of the penthouse, Katie sat between Steve’s legs as they both watched the parade. Suddenly, a large green balloon floated by the window and Katie gave a loud squeal when she saw what it was. A Hulk float. An amused smile spread across her lips as she watched the balloon bob in front of the window, twisting to the sides in the air as it wrestled with the wind. “Oh my God!” Katie giggled again, gently tapping Steve’s right calf but he had already spotted it. A massive shield was coming out, followed by Iron Man’s mask, Thor’s hammer, a bow and arrow, Natasha’s Red Widow symbol and her own Nova star. She turned to look at him, a little smile was tugging at the corners of his mouth and when he met her eyes the smile broke out across his features. Laughing in disbelief, he shook his head, turning his attention back look at the shield float bounce down the street. “That’s pretty cool.” He allowed himself a slightly smug and amazed sigh, and it was. If anyone had told him all those years ago that one day he would feature in the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade he would have told them that they were mad. Yet there it was. He found himself smiling as he thought about how his ma and Bucky would have reacted. When they had finished eating, Katie leaned back into him a little more, slouching so that her knees were bent and her feet rested on the bottom of the window. His arms reached round her neck, and he kissed the back of her head as they continued to watch the floats, the gentle sound of Bing Crosby “White Christmas” now playing through the room, the two of them simply enjoying the closeness of one another. ***** Eventually it was time to head downstairs and join Tony, Bruce and Pepper for their dinner. Katie and Pepper left the men to it and finished off the prep before calling them all to the table. As was tradition, as ‘head of the house’ Tony carved the turkey with his usual, trademark drama and they took it in turns to give a few things they were thankful for. Tony was thankful for his friends, family and a decent brand of scotch he had in the cupboard for later, Pepper was thankful for being so fortunate and being surrounded by people she loved, Bruce was thankful for being welcomed into their family home, not just for today but since he had taken up residency just after the Chitauri Battle, and Katie was thankful for being in the presence of people she cared for, and for the last year being so much better than the previous twelve months. She shot a wink at Steve as she said that and he beamed before he realised they were waiting for him.
"Okay, well…” He cleared his throat. “I guess I’m thankful for being given a second chance, being welcomed by you all…and for, err, you.” He grinned at Katie who gave him a playful roll of the eyes but the flush on her cheeks told him she had understood.
“Awww.” Pepper smiled, as Tony made a gagging noise which resulted in Katie throwing a carrot at him. He pointed at her, frowning.
“No food fights on my floor, Kiddo.” He said sternly and she simply raised an eyebrow at him, taking a sip of her wine.
The food was good, not that anyone expected anything else. Both Tony and Banner managed two servings whilst Steve made it through three. And then there was the pie. Steve scoffed down a piece of each, whilst everyone else could only face one, but no one cared. And he found himself secretly pleased that there was enough left for him to scoff later on.
“I’m so glad I wore leggings.” Pepper sighted, leaning back and massaging her stomach.
“Tell me about it.” Katie moaned. “I’m so glad this denims have an elasticated waist.” She pulled at the middle of her long maroon peplum style top. “Think I’m having a food baby.”
“Yeah, I gotta hand it to you Kiddo…” Tony leaned back in his chair, undoing the top button of his pants and massaging his stomach “That was absolutely awesome.“
Steve’s hand dropped to his girl’s leg under the table and he gave her knee a little squeeze as she reached for her wine glass, before he moving his arm to drop it round the back of her chair. "I certainly prefer the Turkey dead and cooked anyway” Tony added and Katie groaned. “Are you ever gonna let me live that down?” She looked at him. “No” he shook his head. “What’s this?” Steve asked, setting his glass down. “Did she not tell you about the time she brought home a live Turkey one year? Katie sighed as Steve sat up, turning to her, smirking "No…” “I was seventeen and going through a meat is murder phase.” She waved away the comment with her hands. “I was in the way home and saw him. He was the only one left in the farmyard so I liberated him” “By liberated she means stole.” Tony quipped, standing up to retrieve two more bottled of Rijoca from the wet bar as laughs rang round the table. “No one came looking for him.” She shrugged. “Marv lived a happy life for five years in our back garden” “Marv?” Bruce looked at her, a smile creeping across his face. “After the character from Home Alone.” She replied simply
“You had a turkey called Marv?” The scientist deadpanned and she nodded.
“He was a great pet. Used to chase Tony around” “The bird was a fucking menace.” Tony frowned, topping everyone’s glass up. Settling back into his chair, Katie noticed Pepper giving him a look and he started suddenly as if he was remembering something. He leaned forward and looked at Katie. "So I know we don’t do Thanksgiving gifts kiddo but I was thinking yesterday about something you said to me once, about having a vision for a publishing company.”
Katie stole a look at Steve who simply shrugged. It was true, when she had first graduated she had thought about setting up a publishing company, but one that dealt with unknown writers. Her favourite books in the world were the Harry Potter series and during her degree she had been lucky enough to attend a small seminar held by JK Rowling, who had openly discussed her life before becoming a famous author. She had been a single mother, struggling to make ends meet, and even after she had written the books it took her years to get a deal, being rejected by four different publishers before Bloomsbury (a small, independent group) took a chance on her and it paid off for both of them. Katie loved the rags to riches story and since then had always harboured a desire to do the same thing for other authors but it had never really been much more than a pipe dream.
“It was an idea I once had.” She shrugged, looking at Tony. “Then things went a bit crazy.” “Well… how about we make it a bit more than an idea?” Pepper said. “What?” Katie frowned, looking at Pepper, then he brother who nodded. “I want you to put a proper proposal together, business plan, mood and story board that type of thing.” He said, waving his hand in that Tony-esque manner “Then we’re gonna look at what we need to set it up and take it to the board. Run it as a Ltd company under the Parent company of Stark Industries, but you’ll be the Managing Director.” “I…, I can’t run a business!” She stammered. “Didn’t you run the UK branch of SI for a while?” Bruce looked at her, smiling. “That was different.” She pressed. “Why?” Steve asked. “Shut up Steven.” She shot without even looking at him.
There were a few chuckles round the table before Tony continued. “Look, you don’t need to work.” He shrugged. “You have enough capitol behind you plus the revenue from the business as it to live your life out as an IT girl,  but we both know you’ll end up killing someone if you get bored, and that’s likely to be Cap seeing as you see him most so this is for him as much as you.” “Thanks Tony.” Steve tipped his glass to the Inventor who winked. Katie pondered. It really had been a dream of hers since leaving Uni, putting her degree and passion into her work and she would be lying if she said the thought didn’t excite her but it was a hell of a big commitment, and what if it all failed?
“I’ll help you.” Pepper smiled at Katie who was biting her lip. "I’ll proof read the proposal and I’ll be there every step of the way whilst you set up.” She leaned back in her chair. "The week before Christmas there’s another board meeting. I suggest we use that to pitch the idea.”
“I think this could be a great opportunity for you and Stark Industries.” Tony looked at Katie. “And you’ll get full autonomy over it all, I promise.” This was amazing. She looked at Steve who nodded encouragingly. “What is it you keep saying to me? You’ll never know until you try?” he smiled at her. She took a deep breath and looked around the table before throwing caution to the wind and letting out a huge grin. “Ok. Fuck it. Let’s do it.” **** After another half an hour or so of chatter, and a bottle of champagne to celebrate Katie’s agreement to the business idea, everyone chipped in to clear the table before retiring to the plush living area of Tony and Pepper’s floor for more drinks and chat. Then the alcohol really did began to flow, Steve and Tony moving onto the scotch,  the soldier watching as everyone around him descended into that well recognised drunken haze. And then out came ‘Drawing Without Dignity’, a game Steve had never played before which was really rather vulgar, but he couldn’t help but enjoy it. The game fast slid into chaos which was to be expected with an extremely competitive Super Soldier who had a natural advantage as he could actually draw, an equally competitive billionaire and a normally mild mannered scientist who also was quite cutthroat when it came to winning it turned out.
Pepper and Katie spent most of the time sniggering at the bickering men, and at the point when they were laughing that much when it was their go, the three boys got so frustrated they banned them from playing. For that, the next time Steve asked Katie what one of the more risqué sayings meant (he had cringed at a fair few of them over the course of the evening) she lied to sabotage him earning her a full on Captain glare. “That was a pretty shitty thing to do.” He grumbled at her as Tony and Bruce were both howling with laughter. “Not my fault Captain Badass doesn’t know what Rimming is!” Katie shot back, wiping away her tears. Steve had to bite back his own laugh at the ridiculous nickname, instead he fixed her with another glare which she returned with a simple shrug of her shoulders. The game ended, and Steve and Tony called it a draw, which was probably the easiest thing to do since Pepper had stopped taking count and tallying towards the end. It was now well after ten pm and Steve looked around the room as Tony stood up, a little unsteady on his feet, teetering back over to the bar.
“I think maybe we’ve had enough.” Pepper hiccupped slightly looked at Tony who had been reaching for another bottle of liquor, wheeled round slightly too fast causing him to stumble into the bar.
Katie cackled as Tony looked at Pepper “Shut up Mom.” he grabbed another bottle of scotch in one hand and the open bottle of Krug the girls were drinking in the other. He walked carefully over towards the sofa, as he dropped down into it heavily, handing the champagne to Katie who was on the floor in between Steve’s legs, her back resting against the sofa. She took it and poured herself and Pepper a glass, quite pleased that she didn’t spill any.
“You know he…he can’t get drunk!”  Tony handed Bruce a now full glass, pointing to Steve.
“That’s sad.” Bruce surmised, taking a sip of his drink before Tony sat bolt upright, and pointed at the scientist.
“Hey, I wonder if Hulk can get drunk?”
“That’s an…that’s an…ex…exper-expediment I don’t think we should do.” Bruce shook his head, hiccups punctuating his speech.
“Absolutely not.” Steve shook his head as Katie cackled.
“But it would be for science purposes.” Tony pressed
Bruce wrinkled his nose and shook his head “No Code Green.” “Spoil sport.” Tony sniffed
They stayed for another hour or so, until Pepper fell asleep. Katie’s cheeks were flushed pink and when she asked for a bottle of water Steve knew it was time to go. After asking Tony if he needed help clearing anything up, which he declined stating housekeeping would be in at some point tomorrow to deal with it, Steve stood up, surprised to find he actually felt a little bit of a head-rush. Ok, so maybe the three bottles of scotch they’d managed to go through had had a little effect after all, but he felt the fizziness ebbing away as he pulled Katie to her feet and she grinned up at him.
“Wanna carry me Soldier?” she asked.
He arched an eyebrow and in one swoop had her over his shoulder, causing her to shriek with laughter as she clutched at his navy blue cardigan jacket.
“Night!” She waved from her upside down position. Tony and Bruce waved distractedly from where they were now trying to mix some form of cocktail at the bar.
“You can put me down now.” Katie patted Steve on his back as they boarded the elevator. “Steve…”
He smirked to himself, ignoring her giggles and protests, swatting lightly at her ass, and didn’t put her down until they reached  the bedroom where he tossed her onto the bed and set about showing her exactly how thankful for her he was

Thanksgiving with the Shie Hassaikai headcanons? Can we also pretend Pops is awake for this too? 🥺
(No worries! We always pretend Pops is awake because I live in a constant state of denial where I pretend Kai isn’t an asshole that put him in a coma. Anyway lol, let’s just pretend you work for the Hassaikai for this one! Ps: I was hoping someone would request this)
~Thanksgiving with the Hassaikai~
Tumblr media
headcanon|scenario|imagine|match-up
-Although you’ve only been employed to the Hassaikai for 10 months so far, everyone already knew your personality well enough to see this coming. That’s why when you called an emergency meeting, nobody was surprised at your request for celebrating Thanksgiving together. However, that didn’t make it easy for getting everyone to agree. Rappa, Tabe, Deidoro, Pops, and Toya were excited for it! Hojo, Tengai, Nemoto, and Chrono were indifferent and didn’t mind trying it. The only complaints were from Kai (as usual when you suggested something fun) and Mimic (who didn’t see the point in it). Thankfully Pops was delighted by you from the very moment you showed up at the base. So of course he was on your side. Since he was still the big boss, there was nothing anyone could do to deny you.
-”Okay everyone is required to bring something so we can have a feast. Work in teams to get this stuff done, and I’ll do the assigning! So Pops, you don’t have to worry about a single thing okay? Don’t worry about getting anything together but if you absolutely want to then I don’t mind.” You smiled at him and he cheerfully nodded. “Okay here’s the line up: Rappa and Katsukame are in charge of the Turkey. I’m putting a lot of faith in you guys. The turkey is the star of the show and I need it done perfectly! Or at least...as good as you can manage. Tengai and Mimic can handle the devilled eggs. Deidoro and Hojo are in charge of getting the drinks. Please do not show up with only alcohol. In fact, I’m mainly counting on you Hojo to make sure Sakaki doesn’t do this. Now Tabe and Setsuno are in charge of getting the plates, cups, cutlery, and the deserts. Toya I’d focus on doing the deserts so Tabe won’t get tempted to eat them. Finally Overhaul and Chrono can get the side dishes. This includes Macaroni, Greens, Cranberry Sauce, any and all side meats like chicken or whatever. Ceaser salad, Potato salad, etc. You guys get the drift. The reason why I put so much on you is because I’m confident you guys can handle the load. Finally I’ll be working with Shin to get the Ham. That’s all! Any questions?” Immediately you got hands in the air.
Pops: “May I help make some of the main dishes?” He asked with slight puppydog eyes. Rather childlike for his old age, but you couldn’t deny him even if you wanted to. “Pops we just want you to relax as the head of the table, but if you really want to then you may attempt it.”
Deidoro: “How much and what kind of alcohol am I in charge of?” His eyes were super focused causing you to laugh a bit. “Okay well let’s not go overboard first of all. It’s not like a Halloween party or anything wild like that. We’re getting together over dinner and expressing thanks for the things we received so graciously.” You explained. He paused and deadpanned. “So...just wine then?” ...”Yeah, just wine. And not the strong kind either. Maybe you can get a little Sake for yourself.”
Rappa: “Yes uh, how in the fuck am I supposed to cook this shit?” Katsukame punched his shoulder. “You big idiot, we bake it!” Rappa punched him back as a reply. “Fucking DUH, but like what kind of seasonings???” Katsukame punched him again. “Probably something not too heavy so we focus more of the fucking flavor of the dressing in side of it.” Rappa once again punched back as a rebuttal. “Fuck off, cilantro is all you had to say you bastard.” You immediately had to speak up between them before their playful banter would turn into an entire indoor death match. “Okay guys, don’t focus too hard on it. This is kinda western so just look up some recipes and videos please? And most importantly, always have a back-up turkey on hand just in case you guys mess up the first one.”
Kai: “Yeah I have a question. Where the hell do you get off on telling me what to do? I’m you’re boss and you’re just barely high enough up to even be considered a precept.” Pops immediately got up and slapped the back of Kai’s head. “Bite your tongue Chisaki and apologize!” Kai grumbled and bowed for a second while uttering a short apology. Chrono chuckled off to the side as he tried to hold back his laughter.
Mimic: “Who’s wallet is this coming out of???” You smiled at him and he gulped. “Well not from our pay. We’ll call it a holiday event and pull from the reserves. The yakuza has been thriving lately under Pops of course. Unless anyone wants to donate?” You looked at Kai with fluttering lashes and he glared at you. “Fuck fine. I’ll cover the expenses on my end.” You smiled and nodded.
-If only from that point on things could’ve went well but there were just too many obstacles of course. Not on you and Nemoto’s end of course! You two were efficient and quick. You got in and out of the grocery store in under 2 hours with the perfect ham. You agreed to go to his apartment to cook it together since the house kitchen at the base would go to Pops, Chrono, and Kai more than likely. And the lower part of the base kitchen would belong to Rappa and Rikiya. The TRUE issues arose on the ends of everyone else. Pops was an angel and the food he attempted to make was reasonable, but the old man overdid it and ended up making 4 of the same cakes. What were you going to do with exactly 4 red velvet cakes??? Anyway, as to be expected, Rappa and Rikiya fucked up BOTH of the turkeys. You had to make them search all around town to find a pre-done turkey on the morning of Thanksgiving itself. They eventually found one from a generous donor in exchange for that person having their debt to the yakuza swept under the rug. Chisaki and Chrono did a pretty good job but they took so long that half of the stuff was still being set up when it was time to start dinner. Tabe actually did an okay job at setting the table up. The real surprise was that SETSUNO was the one that was tempted and ended up munching corners off of the deserts. Of course Sakaki showed up with a wide variety of alcohol that Hojo didn’t even notice he had snuck into the other shopping cart. Meanwhile Tengai and mimic had decorated the devilled eggs rather poorly. Tengai believed the minimal was better and Mimic was trying to cut corners with price/quality. Nevertheless everything was set up and you all began to review the things you were thankful for.
“Well I just wanna start off by saying that I’m thankful for this job and the bonds I’ve made with you all not just as coworkers but as people. I truly consider the Hassaikai to be like family.”
Pops: “I want to thank everyone as well for working so hard for our little family here. I also want to thank you Y/N for bringing some youthful joy into my life once again.”
Kai: “I suppose I’m thankful for my good health and sanity dealing with all of you on a daily basis.”
Chrono: “Yo, I’m thankful for my last paycheck but also for the years I’ve served here. It kinda has been almost like a fam to me yknow. Not trying to get sappy or anything but thanks you guys.
Mimic: “This is weird but I guess I’ll try it. I’m thankful for uh...the opportunities set forward in front of me.”
Nemoto: ”I’m very much thankful for our leader, and also for master Overhaul. I appreciate you for allowing me to strive in my work the way that I do. I can only hope to continue pleasing you both as my time goes on at this organization. That is all.”
-Deidoro: “Thanks to this damn Saki I’ve already had 2 and a half cups of while everyone wasn’t listening. Also thankful for my liver as well.”
-Hojo: “Well I guess I can say I’m thankful for everyone here and for the boss when he took me in off the street and healed me after I almost died.”
Setsuno: “Yeah thanks for giving me purpose again boss. I’m thankful for that too.”
Tabe: “Food...friends...found family...”
Katsukame: “Fucking thanks for letting us have enough chance after we fucked up two of those damn turkeys. I thought you were gonna kill us Y/N.”
Tengai: “I’m rather thankful for my sanity as well, after dealing with this job so much...”
Rappa: “This shit is cheesy but damn it I’m thankful for everything here too! I aint much at speeches so I’m gonna stuff my face now.”
-So there you go. It may not have been the most conventional thanksgiving but it was something along the lines of a ‘perfect disaster’ all in it’s own. You can only sit back and look at everyone eating and talking before you realize that a Christmas party might not be so bad to start planning for either.

don’t forget gloves
jj x unc women’s soccer reader
Tumblr media
jj agrees to a pickup game during winter break
(warnings: cursing, severe lack of editing)
JJ agreed, a little to your surprise, to come play in a pickup game with you and some of your teammates and their partners. You knew he typically didn’t like doing stuff like that because he wasn’t the most knowledgeable about soccer, but since hit had been over a year, you guessed he felt confident enough in his abilities.
“Babe,” he held his hand up when you made a surprised noise, “I’ve been practicing for months now.”
You raised your eyebrows in amusement, “Sure thing. It’s later this afternoon, but I’m gonna go early and stretch if you want to come.”
“Do I have time to take a nap?”
Humming, you glanced at your watch, “Sure. I’ll come pick you up in an hour and a half.”
“You don’t want to stay?”
“Not if you’re sleeping, I’ll just go home and watch some TV.”
JJ shrugged and handed you your keys, “Suit yourself.”
-
You ended up walking home and jogging back to JJ’s apartment as a sort of warmup. The sun was getting low, would probably start setting in the next hour, and you didn’t want to get hurt. You texted him and within a few minutes, he was opening the passenger door and climbing in.
“Hey, how was the nap?” you asked, turning the heat up a little.
JJ looked at you suspiciously, “Did you just run here?”
“Maybe.”
He snorted, “You baffle me sometimes. The nap was great, feeling rested and ready to kick some ass.”
“Glad to hear,” you answered, backing out of your spot to head to the practice field.
When you got there, JJ helped you drag the goals into place, and you helped him stretch out. After tying his shoe, he stood up, “Who all is coming?”
“Not too many people, a couple teammates and some significant others.”
He nodded, “What time?”
“Ten minutes.”
“Will you pass with me a little bit?”
“Sure.”
He moved back about ten feet, and the two of you knocked it back and forth steadily and in silence. You were actually really impressed at how much he’d improved, even when you hit one at him more firmly than you intended.
Grinning, he passed it back easily, “I’ve been using a wall at my complex. This is so easy compared.”
Which reminded you of when you were younger, using the wall as a passer to work on control and staying on your toes to move quicker. You nodded, “The wall is a great way to build skill.”
“I read it online,” he admitted, “there was one week that I walked around my house with a soccer ball at my feet at all times, but my roommate got annoyed so I quit.”
Yet another thing you’d done as a child, and you raised your eyebrows, “My parents got annoyed when I did that as a kid too.”
He laughed, “Even your dad?”
“Especially my dad. He was all for improving until he tripped over it carrying food.”
“Oh no.”
“Oh yes, Thanksgiving food to be exact. Thankfully it wasn’t the turkey, but we had no dressing that year.”
“Damn,” he whistled lowly as a car pulled in and parked next to yours. A few of your teammates that carpooled climbed out, one of them carrying a bag full of pennies she’d grabbed from the locker room.
A few of them spread out to kick around while a few of you waited to the side.
“Girls versus boys?” your teammate, Alexis, asked.
You shook your head, “Nah, I think Payton is bringing her girlfriend so it’d be uneven.”
“Wait have we met Payton’s girlfriend before?”
“Not this one,” you mused, “I think the one we met during the season broke up with her.”
“Oh shit,” Alexis muttered, “you know why?”
“Traveling killed her. She wanted weekends together that Pay just didn’t have during the season.”
Alexis sighed, “That fucking sucks.”
“Yeah, but this girl, Emma, plays volleyball, so she gets it.”
“How do you know?”
“I talk to her regularly,” you answered, amused.
“You’ve met Emma?”
“Only on FaceTime. I think she’s pretty nervous to meet us.”
Alexis smirked, “Good.”
Mack was the next to join the group, dragging her boyfriend behind her with a grin, “Can’t believe we’re all matching!”
You glanced down, all three of you wearing the same hoodie and shorts combo, “Wow, so cute,” you deadpanned.
She reached forward to flick your nose, “Fuck off, give our brains some credit.”
“Our brains,” Alexis snorted, “we just share a single fucking braincell.”
Payton was the last to show up, sitting in the car a few seconds after turning it off, talking to the girl in the passenger seat.
“Think she’s giving a pep talk?” Mack mused, holding a ball she’d been juggling against her hip.
“Probably.”
The other two girls joined the group a few minutes later, and Alexis started handing out pennies to assign teams. You and JJ ended up on the same team, and he looked relieved. You held your fist out to him to bump, and when he did, you told him, “Partner in crime, we got this.”
And when JJ slid across the ground to tap the ball in off your pass, you yelled, jumping into his arms in excitement.
-
The game finally ended at 8:00 when the practice field lights automatically shut off. Mack suggested everyone turning their brights on to shine over the field, but it was getting obnoxiously cold, and had been raining for a good 40 minutes, so most of you bowed out.
“You only want to keep going because you’re losing,” Payton yelled from across the field.
JJ had his hands on his hips, one of the only ones smart enough to wear gloves. His cheeks were bright pink, and you smiled at him, “Great game.”
“You too, obviously.”
“Weee are the champions, my friends,” Alexis crooned, wrapping an arm around your shoulders.
You snorted and Mack flipped her off, “Fuck off, it was just for fun anyway.”
Payton smirked, “Would you be saying that if you won?”
Before Mack could say anything, her boyfriend grabbed her elbow, “Alright, babe, let’s go.”
“You’re lucky,” she called over her shoulder.
JJ laughed and picked up both of your bags on the sideline. You laced your fingers together, walking next to him, trying to regain feeling back in them. When you got to the car, JJ tugged on the door handle until you managed to unlock it.
You sighed, and tried to crank up the car, but you couldn’t get your fingers to cooperate, too frozen and stiff to wrap fully around the keys.
JJ spoke, not looking at you, “Damn, I took that one to the thigh, never been more grateful to be wearing leggings.” Then he seemed to realize the car was still cold and still off, “You good?”
“I can’t get it.”
He’d pulled his gloves off, and he reached over with his hands to grab yours, almost jerking away when they made contact, “Fuck, your hands are freezing. Why no gloves?”
“Forgot.”
Shaking his head, fondly, JJ asked, “Want me to drive home. Let your fingers defrost.”
“That’d be great,” you answered, relieved.
JJ leaned across the console to press a kiss to your forehead before opening the door and getting out quickly. Instead of getting out, you slid across to the passenger seat in maybe the most ungraceful way.
He got into the driver's seat, cranked up the car, and pulled out of the parking lot all within a few seconds while you held your fingers up to the heat blowing out of the vents.
When the two of you got to his apartment, you glanced over at the counter where your discarded gloves were sitting.
Smiling wryly, you told him, “Won’t be forgetting those again.”
“Bet not,” he laughed.
“Wish we had a fireplace,” you sighed, moving toward the bathroom to get your wet clothes off.
A few seconds later, JJ called out, “I can light a bunch of candles for you instead.”

If There’s a Place I Could Be - Chapter Seventy Five
If There’s a Place I Could Be Tag
November 22nd, 2000
“Toby!” Remy exclaimed, running to his brother and hugging him tight. “Oh, God, Toby, am I relieved to see you!”
“Hey, Rem!” Toby exclaimed, turning from where he had been talking to Vanessa to hug Remy. “It’s so good to see you! How’s college been?”
Remy’s stomach churned and he groaned. “Oh, God, I don’t want to talk about it,” he complained.
“Fair enough,” Toby laughed. “I feel the same way after midterms. Have you made any friends, at least?”
“I mean, I guess...” Remy said. “Although he made me his friend more than I made him my friend.”
“Still! A friend! That’s progress!” Toby said excitedly. “What’s his name?”
“His name’s Emile, and he’s—”
Remy was cut off as his mother called them all to the dinner table. “You can explain about him more after dinner,” Toby promised. “I’ll love to hear all about him.”
  November 22nd, 2002
“Oh, my God, Emile, hon, breathe,” Remy said with a little laugh, placing his hands on Emile’s shoulders and gently shaking him.
Emile was not, in fact, breathing like Remy requested. Emile was bawling on the couch having just watched the finale of Courage the Cowardly Dog. “I-I-I don’t want it to be over!” Emile wailed.
“Want it or not, it’s over, hon, you’re gonna pass out at this rate. Please. Breathe,” Remy requested.
Emile took in one deep breath, then another, and Remy gave him an encouraging smile. “Good. That’s good, hon.”
“I feel dizzy,” Emile breathed.
“Yeah, well, you hyperventilated for a good fifteen minutes, I’m not surprised. Should I get you some water?” Remy asked.
“Please?” Emile asked softly.
Remy kissed Emile’s temple and went to the kitchen, grabbing him a glass of water. He walked back over and Emile took the water with a small “Thank you,” taking small sips as his hands ever-so-slightly shook.
“Are you like this when any cartoon you like ends? Because if so, then I might need to get you a designated sobbing corner in our apartment,” Remy teased.
“No, I’m not like this every time,” Emile huffed. “I’m just like this with the ones that mean a lot to me.”
“So, all of them,” Remy filled in.
Emile stuck his tongue out at Remy but Remy just grinned shamelessly. “Listen, I don’t freak out over every last cartoon I’ve ever seen,” Emile said.
“Oh, I’m sure,” Remy said. “You have your calm moments, totally.”
“Remy!” Emile laughed. “I’m trying to be serious.”
“I’m trying to be realistic while also being lighthearted,” Remy said with a shrug. “You get really obsessed with all things cartoons, Emile. I would not be surprised if this happens again.”
Emile pouted, but Remy counted that as better than a scowl, and therefore a win. “I’m not a child, Rem,” Emile said.
“Of course you’re not a child,” Remy said, blinking. “You’re my boyfriend, and a wonderful man, and a massive geek, but you’re not a child.”
Emile was continuing to pout and Remy sat down next to him on the couch. “Is this post-cartoon withdrawal or is this a serious self-esteem issue about you being seen as a child?”
“Probably a mix of both,” Emile said reluctantly. “I just...everyone likes to joke about me getting obsessed with cartoons, and just being...like a giant puppy, or something. And yeah, most of the time that doesn’t bother me, but is that all people see me as? Do they only see me as an overgrown child who just needs to...grow up?”
“I can tell you right now that’s not the case, Emile,” Remy said with absolute certainty. “I mean, sure, cartoons are generally made for children. But liking them doesn’t make you a child. You’ve seen what happens in the adult world, and you’re training to become a therapist to help people with the real world being far, far too much for them to handle. You know exactly how depraved the real world can be. And you use cartoons to remember that good can triumph over evil, that at the end of the day, friendship and family make everything better, and that even in our darkest moments, there’s hope. You don’t simply use them as an escape from the real world, you use them to look at the real world in a different, more positive light. And that’s...honestly, that’s one of the most mature things I can think of. Proving to the world that you won’t be beaten down, that you’ll keep looking for the good in everything. You’re not a child. Sometimes, you like childish things, but liking childish things doesn’t make you a child. I should know. I’m a grown adult who lives vicariously through comic books.”
Emile laughed. “I guess you’re right,” he conceded. “It’s just...hard to remember sometimes. And I know my family always means the teasing about me loving cartoons in good fun, but after a while...it wears on me, and then something happens, like one of my favorite cartoons being cancelled, and I cry over it, and I ask myself, am I really that child that everyone says I am?”
“No, hon, you’re not a child,” Remy said. “Think about it this way: everything my mom says is wrong, and my mom called you a child and ‘stuck in the past.’ Still feel like that has any basis in truth?”
Emile blinked. “...No,” he admitted. “But I really don’t think I can use your mother as the basis for making me feel better most of the time. Usually, she just makes me mad.”
“That’s fair, she drives me up the wall too,” Remy said with a grin.
Emile laughed, only slightly hysterically. “You know, we’re having Thanksgiving here this year,” he said.
“Yeah?” Remy asked. “With your parents. What’s your point?”
“What if your mother comes back?” Emile asked. “Are you ready for that?”
Remy shrugged. “If she comes back I’ll refer to your mom as my mom until she gets the message to leave, and we don’t let her through the door for literally anything,” he said. “Like, my mom scares me, but your parents have gotten her to back down without too much trouble before. If worst comes to worst I can hide behind your dad.”
Emile laughed. “That doesn’t sound like a very solid plan, Rem,” he said.
“Well, I mean...I don’t have a solid plan. I’m not, like, getting nightmares over Thanksgiving but I am admittedly anxious enough that I don’t like thinking about it if I can help it,” Remy admitted. “I’m not really ready to go head-to-head with her. Your parents can act as a buffer, at least a little bit, and I know you won’t put up with her hanging around the apartment, but like...I’m still nervous.”
“That’s understandable,” Emile said with a nod. “Are you ready for Thanksgiving otherwise? I mean, my parents agreed to get the turkey, but do we need to go grocery shopping?”
Remy blinked. “I completely forgot! That’s what I was going to do before I found you sobbing your eyes out on the couch. Emile! We need to go grocery shopping.”
Emile laughed and nodded. “All right, good to know. Should we head out now?”
“Um. Yeah. We have six days, so everything we need should be there and not bought out, with the benefit of it not going bad before Thanksgiving.”
“Then we’d better head out,” Emile said, finishing his water and standing up. “We don’t want to miss out on the cranberry sauce because I was bawling my eyes out about Courage.”
Remy laughed, but his mind was whirring as he grabbed his coat and shoes. His mother was probably going to show up on or around Thanksgiving again, to try and take him back to her house. And much as he would like to see Toby again, he didn’t have his own car that he could use to drive away once he got contact info, so he had no chance of leaving if he went with his mother. And not coming back home, never seeing Emile again, that wasn’t an option. In fact, if Toby found out Remy had left the love of his life just to see Toby again, he would probably be calling Remy bone-dead stupid for the rest of time.
Emile brushed his hand against Remy’s as they left the apartment complex and headed to the grocery store. “What are you thinking about?” he asked.
“Toby,” Remy admitted. “I just...miss him and wish I could see him again. Not enough to go with my mother anywhere, of course, but I still miss him.”
“We’ll find him,” Emile promised Remy. “Dice said he had a couple leads last time we met, remember? It’s not much, and it will probably take some months to get everything figured out and find out which lead is going to lead us to him, but we’ll find him. We’re closer than ever before.”
“Yeah,” Remy said, but he wasn’t feeling as confident as Emile sounded.
“Remy,” Emile said. “We will find him. I know you’d love to see him by Christmas, or your birthday, or someday soon, and it bums you out that isn’t possible. But one day, we’re going to find him, and he’s going to give you a big hug, and you’re going to give him one back, and you two will keep close. Like, I can’t see a time where he isn’t a phone call away, once we find him. Even if the two of you didn’t talk for months, I have no doubt you could just pick up the phone and chat again like the two of you had never stopped talking in the first place. Just from what you’ve told me of him, he wouldn’t throw away his second chance. He would hold it as close as he could, and he would never, ever let go.”
Remy nodded with a sad smile. “That does sound like him,” he sighed. “I just...I don’t know. I wish he could be here for the big things, and the little things. Like, Christmas is going to be a pain, just because I’m going to think about him no matter what with all the emphasis on family and friendship and camaraderie and staying together no matter what. Like, I’d kill to just have the option of calling him, even if I didn’t actually do that. And it feels like Toby is just...a huge focus on our conversations nowadays, and I don’t mean for that to happen, but it just kinda...does.”
“Well, the holidays are coming up, which means you miss him more. That’s normal, Rem,” Emile said, placing a hand on Remy’s shoulder. They walked into the grocery store, and Emile grabbed a basket. “We’ll talk about him as much as you need to, and when the hurt ebbs away a little bit, like it usually does after the holidays, we’ll have room to talk about other things.”
“Like what?” Remy asked. “What do we normally talk about when I’m not obsessed with Toby?”
“Normal life stuff. Work, school, friends. Whatever crazy project you want to try whenever you have the time. Whatever small thing has gotten into my hair and refuses to let me go free until you help me work through the knots.”
It felt like Emile was trying to hold something back from him, though. “What aren’t you telling me, Emile?” Remy asked, his eyes squinted.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Emile lied.
“Emile,” Remy insisted.
“Remy, trust me when I say it’ll be much better as a surprise, okay?” Emile said. “I’m working on something for your birthday, and it’s taking a while so I started early, but I’m getting everything set up, slowly but surely. And it’ll be ready in time for your birthday, and you’re probably going to be chattering about it non-stop when it comes to pass. But right now, it’s not ready, and I want to surprise you. So can we talk about something else?”
Remy groaned. “Oh, you’re no fun, Emile. Fine. What boring thing do you want to talk about that doesn’t involve my birthday?”
Emile looked around the store. “Where do we go first? What ingredients do we need for Thanksgiving dinner?”
Remy hummed and said, “Well, we need the cranberry sauce, and stuffing, and ice cream. I talked to your dad, and he’s bringing a pie over—”
“—Because of course he is,” Emile finished.
“—So we don’t have to worry about that,” Remy said. “I think we should pick some rolls up, or at least some dough and bake the rolls ourselves, just because that’s always a nice add-on, and then we need to figure out the gravy.”
Emile nodded. “Sounds good,” he agreed.
Remy started pulling Emile around in the search, but in the back of his mind the gears were still whirring like crazy. What exactly did Emile have planned for his birthday? What would take so long that he’d have to start in November?
And would it ruin Remy’s plans to go out and buy a ring for Emile?

Thanksgiving, 10 Years later
Dean doesn’t die, and 10 years down the road, plans a Thanksgiving to beat all Thanksgivings.
He wakes up with a gasp when his alarm goes off, and the radio starts to play the song that still haunts his nightmares.
Sam Winchester fumbles as he slams the alarm off, and looks around at the room around him, rubbing his eyes.
No terrible motel room wallpaper.
No funky smell.
No Dean lacing up his boots with a “rise and shine, Sammy!”
But it’s not the bunker, either, which…
Makes sense.
Sam’s been married for eight years, and while the bunker still works for storage and a place to stay if a hunt goes too late, it’s not ideal for his wife and son.
Eileen pokes her head into the room, signing quickly. “You okay? You look freaked out.”
He nods, rubbing his eyes again, signing back as he talks. “Yeah. Yeah, I’m okay. Just- bad dream. Dreamed Dean died.”
Eileen gives him a sympathetic look, walking over to sit on the bed and kiss him tenderly. “Dean’s fine,” she tells him, singing slowly so he gets every word. “He’s been planning this big Thanksgiving for months. We’re going to his house tonight. Sleeping over for the big day.”
Sam takes a breath and gathers his wife in his arms, holding her tightly.
“It’s okay, Sam,” she says out loud. “Everything’s okay.” She signs again. “I’m here. Nate is downstairs, having breakfast.”
Nathan, their five-year-old son. Energetic and funny; smart and intuitive. Looks a whole lot like his mom.
Sam grins and holds her tighter.
*****
Dean wakes with a start, rubbing his eyes hard and shaking out his head quickly. The bedroom is still dark, and he realized that everyone has let him sleep in today.
Which is ridiculous, because they’ve got one more sleep to Thanksgiving, and there’s tons to do.
He slides out of bed and hobbles to the bathroom. He gets stiff now that he’s officially getting older. All those old hunting injuries have really caught up with him, but he still does okay, keeping up with a nine-year-old daughter and four-year-old son pretty damn well.
To say nothing of his spry, tiny wife.
Oh yeah. And the Angel that lives in the guestroom.
He takes a leak, brushes his teeth and cleans up, grabbing his robe on the way out of the bedroom and down the stairs.
When he turns the corner to the kitchen, it’s to find everyone already eating breakfast.
“How come nobody woke me up?” he asks, dropping kisses on both the kids’ heads.
“Because you needed rest,” Castiel explains, as he hands him a cup of coffee. “You’ve been working on this Thanksgiving event around the clock. You were tired.”
“As usual, your angel is right,” Miranda tells him, pecking Dean on the lips. “You needed sleep. You’re too stressed.”
Dean rolls his eyes a little as he sips his coffee, and then winks at Ramona, the nine-year-old eating her cereal at the kitchen island.
She giggles into her bowlm and Dean grins widely.
“What’s the schedule for today?” Dean asks, looking at the chalkboard hanging up next to the fridge. “We got Sam and Eileen and Nate comin’ in tonight. And today, we make all the pies for tomorrow.”
“We only need three,” Miranda reminds him.
“Four,” Dean corrects her.
“Jody is bringing a pie, we do not need five pies,” Miranda says.
Dean huffs. “The five of us, Sam, Eileen and Nate, Donna, Jody and Claire. That’s eleven people. We definitely need six pies.”
“When did we get to six?” Castiel asks, confused.
“Just now,” Dean tells them. “We’re doin’ pumpkin, sweet potato, pecan, apple, and - Babe-” he turns Miranda. “Your best-ever strawberry rhubarb?”
“I cannot believe I’m going to say yes to this,” Miranda huffs.
“I like pie!” Jamie says happily as he eats oatmeal, his chubby four-year-old fingers gripping his spoon. “I like pie a lot. I eat a whole pie.”
Dean grins proudly and turns to Miranda. “Nice to know I’ll never need a paternity test.”
“For that little jab, you can sleep in Castiel’s room tonight, you,” Miranda tells him jokingly.
The kids giggles and Dean shakes his head.
“Okay, okay,” he tells them. “Enough with the yucks. Finish your breakfast and then it’s time to get ready for school.”
Jamie lights up. “We’re gonna make hand turkeys at preschool today! I don’t know what that means but I’m excited!”
“It means they’re gonna turn your hand into a turkey and then carve it up and serve it to the rest of the class,” Ramona tells him.
Jamie gasps, eyes wide and shocked. “Whoa. Coooool.”
“I don’t think that’s correct,” Castiel says warily. “It seems unlikely. Humans generally avoid cannibalism.”
“What’s Cadibadism?” Jamie asks curiously.
“Cannibalism, Dude,” Dean tells him. “It’s when a human eats other people.”
Jamie thinks about that for a moment. “Like this?” he asks, leaning in and biting his sister on the arm.
She yelps and smacks him with a stop. “No! Bad!”
“Jamie,” Miranda scolds. “No biting!”
“I assume there’s more seasoning in cannibalism,” Castiel says thoughtfully.
Miranda sighs heavily. “They are definitely your children.”
*****
Sam pulls the car up to Dean’s house and sighs, relieved to be done with the long drive from Chicago to Kansas. Ten hours in the car with a five-year-old is tough, but doable with a few stretch and potty breaks.
Eileen smiles at him. “Ready?”
He nods and takes a breath, signing. “Ready.” He glances back at the little boy in the backseat, looking at his picture books. “What do you says, Nate? Ready?”
“One more page,” Nate tells him without looking up.
Sam sighs heavily and signs to Eileen. “He’s got one more page.”
She snorts and turns around in her seat, signing to their son. “Save the rest for later. We need to go inside.”
Nate huffs and nods, signing back. “Okay, Mom.”
It’s not long before the three of them are heading up the front steps of the house with their bags and before Sam can ring the bell, the door swings open, revealing his older brother, looking excited to see them.
“Hey! There they are!” Dean booms, reaching down to scoop up Nate and toss him into the air, much to the little boy’s excitement.
“Hi, Uncle Dean,” Nate says.
“Hey, buddy,” Dean grins. “Good drive?”
“I peed in Cedar Rapids, Iowa!” Nate brags.
“That’s awesome,” Dean tells him, nodding in approval before setting him down. “Jamie’s in the living room, go say hi.” He turns back and hugs Eileen, before pulling back and signing clumsily. “Good to see you.”
She beams at him and kisses his cheek. “Thanks Dean,” she signs back. “You, too.”
“Miranda’s in the office if you wanna go say hey.”
Eileen grins as she steps further into the house, and it’s finally Sam’s turn.
“There he is,” Dean says proudly. “Professor Winchester. How’s it goin, college boy?”
Sam rolls his eyes and they hug tightly, Dean patting him on the back.
“You look good, Dean,” Sam tells him. “Like the kids are actually letting you sleep for five minutes.”
“Things are good,” Dean confirms. “Kids are doing great. Miranda’s awesome. Cas is good.”
“That’s great,” Sam grins. “Still enjoying being a stay-at-home dad?”
“It’s still awesome,” Dean confirms as they walk through the house and into the kitchen, where Dean grabs them a couple of beers.
Five pies sit on the kitchen island, cooling off, and Sam has to shake his head. “We don’t need this much pie.”
“Bite your tongue,” Dean snaps. “We always need this much pie.”
“Where’s Cas?” Sam asks.
“He needed a break,” Dean tells him as they take a seat. “Been a lot of chaos around here with my planning and the kids being...well...kids. So he’s takin’ the night off from us.”
They crack their beers open, both of them taking a sip.
“I had this weird dream,” Sam says, trying to smile at his brother. “I-it was so strange. So real. I just- I didn’t know what to make of it.”
Dean nods slowly, looking at his beer. ‘Yeah, I had one of those too. Lemme guess: I die on a routine vamp hunt?”
“Yeah,” Sam says slowly. “If we both had it, what do you think it means?”
“No idea,” Dean admits. “Somethin’ maybe to ask Cas when he gets back. Maybe he can ping Jack. See if there’s somethin’ up.”
Sam nods, still feeling worried. “I don’t wanna get dragged back in.”
“Me neither,” Dean tells him quietly. “But I guess we’ll see.”
“I guess,” Sam agrees. He huffs out a soft breath and glances at the pies, doing a double take. “Did-did you convince Miranda to make a strawberry rhubarb pie for your demented Thanksgiving plans?”
“Damn right I did,” Dean grins proudly. “That woman can make a summer pie like nobody’s business.”
“I can’t believe she married you.”
Dean laughs. “Me, neither, man.”

meddling; the good kind
i decided to clear up a few questions abt how Marui Zenji became Bookmaster of WGO in Genesis so ig this is also my commission payment/holiday gift for @polar-stars
in which a double shot of jager (with some help from the nakiri cousins) pretty much cements marui zenji’s future.
If nothing else, Yoshino Yuki knew turkey. Like, really well.
Much to Zenji’s chagrin, the only takeaway he’d gotten from the American history seminar he and the rest of the PSD gang had enrolled in was that the Pilgrims rode a Dutch fluyt to Virginia back in 1620, but they’d decided to turn Christmas into a Polar Star tradition nevertheless. Wait. Massachusetts? Thanksgiving?
After losing pitifully in a game of hangman to Yukihira Souma of all people — seriously, how was the English lang and composition seminar supposed to prepare him to guess “#tarkeyshet” — Zenji had retreated to the corner of the kitchen to sulk and drink Sakaki Sake while Yukihira paraded around fixing an imaginary pair of glasses and knocked back a shot of Smirnoff Watermelon from Kurokiba’s locker at Legislation.
“Those specs really were for nothing,” Yuki grinned as she pulled him to his feet, took away his solo cup, and handed him a masher. “Come on, Marui. You can vent at the potatoes.”
Zenji aggressively articulated his ire at said potatoes to the point where Yuki had to yank the bowl from him. “The hell, are you trying to make extract? Go kill another turkey if you’re feeling murderous.”
“I’m fine,” sighed the dark-haired chef, massaging the bridge of his nose. “It’s out of my system now. But the sake is not.”
Yuki leaned in and whispered in his ear, “Sacrifice one battle and you’ll win the war.”
“Now since when have you been all philosophical?”
Without missing a beat, Yuki countered, “Since you got all mopey. Now help me bring the turkey out.”
Just then, Nakiri Erina entered the kitchen after knocking on the doorframe. The first seat took one look at Yuki with her mouth basically on Zenji’s ear and dropped her vodka. “I apologize for the intrusion!”
She was already halfway out the door when Yuki and Zenji bellowed, “This isn’t what you think it is!”
Erina glanced doubtfully at the space (or lack thereof) between the Polar Star originals. “Um… in that case. Yoshino-san, do you mind if I talk to Marui-kun for a moment?”
“Not at all,” Yuki replied, and Erina was too distracted to notice the slightest inflection of irritation in the teal-eyed girl’s voice as she took the turkey out of the kitchen.
“How may I be of assistance, Nakiri-san?” Zenji asked, shifting his glasses and sitting on a kitchen stool.
“I was talking to my mother earlier today,” Erina said after picking up her cup, a diplomatic air automatically washing over the area. “She was wondering when you would be available for an interview sometime in the next few days over winter break.”
Zenji gave a prominently uncharacteristic “Eh?”
With a thin smile, Erina continued, “My mother would like to have you intern with her so she can judge if I was right when I told her you’re going to be the next WGO bookmaster. I remember you mentioned something about memorizing all of the WGO guides in first year?”
Zenji blinked once. Twice. “You’re kidding me.”
“No, I am not,” the heiress replied. “I never kid.”
He gestured at her. “That was a kid just now.”
“Besides the point, Marui-kun. My mother would like me to give you her phone number so you can text her your schedule availabilities directly.” Then she added, “Also, that’s more convenient for me because I don’t have to be a mediator.”
At this, Zenji’s eyes bugged out to the size of his fucking glasses. The WGO bookmaster — and Nakiri Erina’s mother to boot — wanted to give him her phone number?
Marui Zenji needed medical care hella fast.
“Um… I’m available whenever she is…?”
Erina shook her head. “I wouldn’t get used to it, but she’s catering to you.”
A sheen of sweat broke out on Zenji’s forehead. He pushed back his bangs and gave a long, pronounced exhale. “In five seconds, Nakiri-san, I will wake up and be so disappointed that I miss classes for the first time in my entire life.”
“You have a perfect attendance record, don’t you?”
“Yes, actually.”
“Perfect. That means you can afford to skip a day without getting detention. Unlike me and Yukihira.” Erina tapped her chin thoughtfully as Zenji made an indignant noise, then as if to deter any individuals that may have been eavesdropping, said in a low voice, “The one stipulation for giving you my mother’s phone number is that you ask Yoshino-san on a date.”
Zenji promptly fell off the stool. “Say what now?”
The eavesdropping individual made her debut just then. “Yes, well, as official relationship counselor of Nakiri Mansion and Polar Star, I am privy to some very public confidential information that you and Yoshino-san are both absolute nuts for each other. So I am prescribing you the following action: get the hell on with it already.”
The Nakiri cousins looked extremely pleased with themselves.
“I agree with Alice,” Erina said primly. “It’s pretty obvious how much she likes you. And since we’re both extremely well-versed in the subtleties of romance, I do believe we’re more than qualified to make this diagnosis.”
“Oh, and look, Marui-kun. Your ears are turning red. Actions speak louder than words. Your silence speaks volumes.”
Zenji squinted at Erina. “Nakiri-san, am I correct to assume that even if I already had the Bookmaster’s phone number, we’d still be having this conversation?” “Duh,” said Alice. “Now’s your chance, Marui-kun.”
“I think I’d rather lose to Yukihira in another game of hangman,” he said nervously.
At this, Alice gave a sympathetic smile. “You, my friend, do not have the emotional capacity of a brick, unlike Ryo and Yukihira, so you should have nothing to worry about. Come on.” Alice grabbed Zenji’s wrist and yanked him to his feet. “She’s in the dining hall. Have a shot if you need the liquid courage.” She passed him a cup of Jager.
The scholar ran a hand through his bangs in an attempt to organize his hair, despite the fact that he already had the neatest cut in like… a ten-mile radius.
“This is for the Bookmaster,” Zenji said, trying to convince himself more than the cousins.
“No, it’s really not,” Alice replied. “Now get to it. Clock is ticking.”
“Also, every second you spend stalling is technically another second you’re ghosting the Bookmaster.”
Zenji exploded into action. He threw back the Jager and sprinted out of the kitchen at a velocity nobody would’ve dared imagine possible for someone of his figure… or his alc tolerance.
“That worked better than I thought it would,” Erina mused.
“Yukihira’s rubbing off on you,” Alice intoned. “You sounded a lot like him just now.”
Rolling her eyes and fighting the blush, the first seat waved off the statement. “As if I would ever be associated with anything influenced by his plebeian mouth.”
“Like… your tongue?”
“Shut the fuck up.”
Alice grinned and tapped her cup against her cousin’s. “Damn right I will, Erina. No need to emphasize the truth.”
The others were all gathered in the dining hall by the time the Nakiri cousins emerged from the kitchen. Zenji was — as expected — sweating as he attempted to approach Yoshino Yuki.
Souma and his strangely acute senses noted exactly what was happening (read as Erina had already filled him in on the details of the plotcounseling session), and he vaguely motioned for Yuki to turn around.
“Yoshino-san,” Zenji began, and those that knew what was going on were all surprised at how steady his voice was despite the fact that he’d just drank what had to be two normal shots of herbal liquor at an ungodly speed. “If you’re available, I was just wondering if you’d like to go on a date with me?”
Yuki’s eyebrows disappeared behind her bangs. “Wait, what?” The rest of the dorm gave an excited whoop.
“… to the Polar Star garden…?”
“GODDAMMIT, MARUI,” they all squawked. Yuki managed an awkward grin and the will to live utterly disappeared from Marui Zenji.
Erina and Alice exchanged a glance. “Call the jet.”
“Gotcha. Ryo, can you fetch the Eclipse, please?”
“It’s on the roof already,” drawled Alice’s former aide. “Come on, Marui,” Ryo continued. “You’re gonna be like the rest of us by the time the sun comes up.”
“The hell does that mean?” sighed the dejected erudite as Ryo dragged him to the rooftop staircase in the back of the building.
“We’re destroying your perfect attendance record so you don’t have more honors cords than all the Elite Ten members combined at the graduation ceremony. Don’t even think about complaining. This is for our—I mean, your—good.”
The Nakiri cousins herded Yuki out of the dining hall after him, and the rest of the social club followed.
“In you go,” Ryo ordered once they were in front of the jet. He damn near picked up the chef who was probably half his weight and chucked Zenji through the hatch. Yuki was prodded on board after him, bleating timid complaints the entire time.
Ryo briefly entered the jet and they heard him instruct the pilot, “Take them to the Nakiri resort in Kobe. Don’t let them come back until tomorrow evening, am I clear?”
“Yessir,” replied the pilot, and then Ryo jumped out and the engines roared to life.
The inhabitants of Nakiri Mansion looked rather pleased with themselves as the jet departed Totsuki campus.
“You think that did it for their first date?” Ryo asked the heiresses.
“Duh,” Alice said with a flippant wave. “Erina and I are professionals. Now, we should start planning for their wedding. It’s Yoshino Yuki getting married, so teal dresses for the bridesmaids should do it.”
Erina nodded seriously. “I’ll start tasting cakes and contacting florists. The wedding’s going to be in Malibu, right?”
“You read my mind, Erina. Turns out we’re the same person after all.”
“Hell no.”
Ryo watched the cousins dive into all-out wedding prep mode over Christmas dinner and held back a smile—whether this was out of the mellowed amusement that arose from watching them bicker like five-year-olds or out of sympathetic pity for the involuntary fiances was up to debate, but it was a smile nevertheless, and that was all that mattered.
And the rest, of course, was history.

Oh look, the Author’s Note is at the top this time. I bet you’re thinking, ‘Well shit, this can’t be good!’ And you’d be right 😂 Okay so, I wanted to write a special for Thanksgiving right and I had these plans to make it this shit fest of just absolute crack and humor right. WELL if you know anything about me you know that I go back to angst by default. Like, you know how when you play online games, sometimes your settings just reset on their own and then you gotta go and turn off the music and turn the subtitles back on and why the fuck is PVP ticked on?? That’s basically me okay. I auto default back to angst unless I changed the settings again lmfao
So, I started this off, full fucking intent on being funny right. Yeah, no. Runaway while you fucking can. It got so fucking heavy in the middle and it’s just… I’m sorry bro. That’s all I can say. It might make you cry? I mean, I’m a sensitive lil bitch and I cried while I wrote it sooo~ But fear not! I gave it a cheerful, happy and somewhat enlightening/inspiring ending?? At least I think so anyway… Also, you don’t have to celebrate Thanksgiving to enjoy this! Oh yeah, and don’t @ me about facts, I literally used Wikipedia because I’m an uncultured fuck that knows nothing about Thanksgiving even though I live in the USA lmao Don’t fucking @ me about the song I chose either 😂 I ain’t adding that shit to the playlist tho.
So yeah! Read this shit, cry into your snuggie or your dog that looks like a mop and then go enjoy some turkey or hug your mum. Don’t forget to reblog this chapter because I’m a hoe for them reblogs ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

The door to class 1-A slammed open with so much force, it bounced off the wall and came back, stopped only by a gloved hand. An obnoxiously loud voice filled the room, “Are you ready, kids?!”
“Aye aye, captain!” I jumped up, automatically answering only to curse myself a moment later when he smirked. “Bitch, this ain’t Spongebob!!”
He clicked his tongue and gave me double finger guns. “But you responded!”
I slumped into my seat in frustration.
Present Mic approached the board, picking up a piece of bright orange chalk before writing a word on the board in English: Thanksgiving. He slapped his palm under the word, making several pieces of chalk fall to the floor. “We’re going to be talking about the meaning of Thanksgiving in Western Countries, most notably in the United States!”
“Sir!” Iida’s hand shot into the air.
“Thanks for calling, listener! What is your request?!”
Iida stood tall. “With all due respect, sir, we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in Japan, we celebrate National Labor Day.”
“You’re correct… almost! Many people consider National Labor Day to be Japan’s Thanksgiving! Plus, I’m your English teacher, so why not take this time to talk about a wonderful holiday where you get to stuff your face with as much food as you can handle without being looked at like a weirdo?!”
“It doesn’t matter what you do,” I commented blankly. “People will always think you’re a weirdo, cockatiel.”
“Hey, aren’t you American, Winchester?” Kaminari questioned, tilting his head back to look at me.
I shrugged. “My mom was American, but I was born in Japan. I mean, Gramps taught me English and we had a small dinner every Thanksgiving to ‘celebrate my heritage’ or some shit, but I don’t really know the details about the holiday.”
“Which is what I’m here for!” He slapped the board again, giving up a grin. “Now pay close attention, listeners! In America, Thanksgiving occurs on the fourth Thursday of November every year! In Western Countries, this holiday is known to be the moment to thank the Native American people for helping European pilgrims to survive their first winter in the United States! Typically, this is a day when families come together from across the country to be with their loved ones and feast!”
I hummed. “Gramps used to always make me watch these American pageants where grade-schoolers put on plays reenacting the interaction between the Pilgrims and the Native Americans. I remember one year, this kid was dressed in a fucking black trash bag stuffed with newspaper.”
“Plays are very popular in schools all across the states!” He nodded his head. “Can anyone tell me what year that Thanksgiving became a federal holiday in the USA?” He cupped his ear, but the only thing he got in response was a cricket that had snuck into the room a week ago to avoid the approaching chill settling over Japan. That fucker is really good at hide-n-seek because we still can’t find him and he’s at the back of the room so it’s like he’s in my fucking ear. “That’s right, the year is 1863! Before that, it was celebrated off and on since 1789 but the third president, Thomas Jefferson, just wasn’t feeling the holiday so he put a stop to it!”
“Seems suspect,” I responded.
“Now, who can tell me about the First Thanksgiving?!”
Chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp.
My eye twitched and I turned in my seat, eyes scanning the back wall. Where the fuck is that goddamn cricket?! I swear to Deadpool I’m gonna roast that bitch when I finally fucking find it.
“Right again, my impressionable listeners! The First Thanksgiving was created by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in October 1621! The feast lasted a total of three days and, according to one attendee named Edward Winslow, there were one-hundred-forty-three rockin’ attendees – ninety Native Americans and fifty-three Pilgrims!” He continued to drone on about the history of Thanksgiving in the states, listing off several different dates and names I couldn’t be bothered to remember.
I mean, History is cool, I guess, but when am I ever gonna need to know this stuff to function as a member of today’s society? Especially here in Japan, where American norms aren’t focused on at all? Plus, that fucking cricket is all I can think about!
“By the way, there will be a test on this and if you fail, you get remedial lessons with me, your chart-topping host!!”
Oh, fuck me.
⊱ ────── {⋅. 🔥 .⋅} ────── ⊰
I stepped out into the chilly night, my breath coming in puffs of smoke as I walked. Aizawa didn’t like us to leave the dorms after dark, but there was no specific rule about it as long as we stayed on campus. It was two in the morning, and I had been tossing and turning in my bed since I got there. It hadn’t bothered me at first when Mic brought up Thanksgiving, but now that it was just a couple days away, I’m starting to get restless.
This would be my first Thanksgiving without Gramps…
I fell onto the icy cold stone bench, letting my head fall back to stare up at the navy sky. It looked like ribbons of velvet, bright stars dotting across it like sequins caught under the light. The moon was a perfect crescent.
“Jen?”
I glanced over, seeing Zuku with his arms wrapped tight around his body. Even with the thick sweater he wore, it was obvious he was cold. I patted the bench beside me and he sat down, letting me throw my arms around his body. I focused on my quirk, raising my body temperature to warm him up. “Why are you awake?”
“I got up to use the bathroom and spotted you out the window.” He frowned up at me, his brow furrowed. “You look so… sad. What’s wrong?”
My grip tightened around him and I smiled sadly. “I guess I am a bit sad… This is my first Thanksgiving without Gramps, so… it kinda hurts, you know?”
“Oh, I see… I’m sorry…”
“It’s fine. Just something you gotta deal with, ya know? It’s life, and life is full of unfairness.”
“Will you… tell me about it?” He asked softly, playing with his fingers in his lap. “About what the two of you did each year? If it’s not too painful, I mean…”
“I’d love to,” I ruffled his hair and closed my eyes. “Let’s see – Gramps thought it was important for us to celebrate Thanksgiving because my mother was American. ‘It’s part of who you are, kitten, so we must celebrate!’ is what he’d always tell me. He spent the first five years learning everything he could about the holiday because he wanted it to be authentic and at age five, he started hosting a small feast for the two of us each year.”
“It sounds like he loved you a lot.”
“Yeah… Yeah, he did. We were each other’s world, the only two people we had in life. It was just us against the world!” I chuckled, but it held no humor. “Gramps was a hell of a good chef. He always used to attribute that to the fact that he worked for near six years in a restaurant with his father before the man died and the place had to be sold. Cooking reminded him of a simpler time, so he took pride in everything he cooked. Now that I think about it… that was the first time I met Skye and Heather.”
“Friends of yours?”
“Nah, they made my life hell growing up.” I waved my hand. “I don’t think they remembered this, but I met them once when I was seven. They lived a couple blocks down from us and Gramps had met them on several of his midday walks. Skye was half-Japanese on her mother’s side, while her dad was American and Heather was full American but her family moved to Japan just a year or two previously. Since Gramps wanted to make Thanksgiving as authentic as possible, he went to them for advice. Sky’s father had asked his grandma back home to send a few of her recipes for the holiday and that’s when I met Skye for the first time. He stopped by on his way to work to drop them off and she was with him, but she took one look at me and turned her nose up.”
“You were bullied?” He asked softly, lowering his head. “I never would have thought that.”
“Yeah, but it didn’t start until I was twelve.” I chuckled. “Anyway, we didn’t have much money to work with, but he saved up with every paycheck for months in advance. Just small amounts from each check and then the week before Thanksgiving, he’d take the money he saved and go all out, buying a Turkey, potatoes, pumpkin pie, the works. Some of the shit he couldn’t even get in our town, he had to travel to specialty shops or order the ingredients online from overseas. I kept telling him it was too much work, but he was a stubborn old man.”
Izuku shifted in my arms, his head on my shoulder. “Tell me more about him,” his voice was soft and growing husky as sleep started to claim him.
I hummed softly. “He liked what the day symbolized – families coming together to be thankful for the people in their lives and for the things they were gifted with. To be honest, I often wondered as a child if he regretted raising me, but I knew that was wrong as I got older. It was almost like… raising me gave him a purpose, a reason to face every day with a smile. And I guess in a way… he was the same for me. I remember it so clearly, waking up at one in the morning on Thanksgiving day to sounds in the kitchen. I’d sneak down the hallway, careful of that stupid ass board on the right that always creaked when you stepped on it. And there he was, seeming to radiate warmth and happiness as he bustled around the kitchen getting all the dishes ready for that day.”
I smiled, my hands fisting around his jacket as I took a shaky breath. “He always wore that stupid ass apron I gave him on his birthday in fifth grade. It was this god awful snot yellow color with lime green stripes. If you stared at it too long, you’d go fucking cross-eyed. And it had this… hell, even to this day I don’t know what it was. I think it was a Rhino in a chef’s hat but I guess it coulda been a hippo? Or a fat giraffe with a short neck. He was convinced it was a Thanksgiving Zebra, but I still think he’s nuts. There’s no way that was a damn Zebra, and I would literally list the reasons why it couldn’t be, but he’d just listen intently with a bright smile, nodding his head to show that he was listening. And once I was done ranting, he’d pat my head and simply say, ‘Thanksgiving Zebras are quite special’. I swear he was batty.”
Zuku chuckled. “What makes a Zebra a Thanksgiving Zebra?”
“They have to be fat as fuck apparently. And orange. At least I think it was orange. It coulda just been a really dark yellow. I’m telling you, this apron was all kinds of wrong! I will never understand what I was thinking when I looked at that thing in the store and was like, ‘This is feckin’ awesome, he’s gonna love it!’. But he did love it, wore it every time he cooked, even on the rare occasions we had guests over. He wore it without shame and always with a smile.”
“Because it was from you, so it was special.”
“Hmm, probably, yeah.” I sighed deeply. “Come on, let’s get you to bed, you look like you’re about to pass out.”
“I wanted to hear more stories,” he pouted, but he was clearly having trouble holding his eyes open.
“I promise to tell you some more later, okay?” I stood up, putting my arms under his body and lifting him into my arms. He snuggled closer, mumbling something under his breath before sleep finally claimed him. I held him closer, feeling my eyes sting with tears, but I forced them back. I swore to myself that I wouldn’t cry, not until I’ve earned the right to do so.

“Hey, Jen, wait up!”
I paused in the hallway, glancing over my shoulder. Ryuu was dodging students as he headed toward me, smiling brightly. When he finally reached me, he threw his arms around my neck, pulling me into a hug. I chuckled, hugging him back. “Hello to you, too. What’s up?”
“Are you busy?” He questioned, pulling away.
“Uhh, I got a shit-ton of homework that I probably won’t do and might accidentally burn but that’s about it.” I grinned.
He huffed, putting his hand on his hip. “You better not! You’re not allowed to get kicked from the hero course because you refuse to do your work.”
“Yes, mother.”
He nudged my shoulder but I didn’t miss the way his lips twitched up. “What do you say we hang out at the library for a bit and work on it together?”
I hummed. “Why, if I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were trying to lure me away, Hiryuu Rin~”
“As if,” he teased, tugging on my hand. “Come on, let’s get to it!”
“But learning is so boring~”
“You won’t be a hero with that attitude~”
“Last time I checked, pros don’t have to go around dividing letters with numbers to defeat villains,” I grumbled, throwing my head back.
He hummed. “True, but what if you come across a math villain?”
“Punch him in the dick.”
He sweatdropped. “What if he has hostages and he’ll only release them if you solve his math problems?”
I looked at him blankly. “What are the actual chances of that fucking happening, Ryuu?”
He huffed, puffing out his cheeks. “It could happen!”
I poked his inflated cheek with a chuckle. “Anything is possible, I guess.”
Ryuu led me to the back of the library, settling down in the corner. The next few hours were spent taking turns on our homework assignments. I was able to help him with a couple subjects, while he had my back for some of the harder ones, like math. And then there was physics, which left us both fucking stumped.
⊱ ────── {⋅. 🔥 .⋅} ────── ⊰
The librarian peeked her head around a large bookshelf, her tired, dull eyes landing on us. “Library’s about to close. Time to leave.”
I glanced out the window and clicked my tongue. “Damn, we were here for a while. It’s dark out.”
He nodded, stuffing his books into his bag. “They say time flies when you’re having fun, but…”
“We weren’t having fun at all,” I pointed out and he shrugged, stifling a yawn.
“Can I come back to your dorm?”
“Ho~? I didn’t know you were so forward, Ryuu.” I wiggled my eyebrows at him and he rolled his eyes, rubbing his arms as we stepped out into the cold.
“I was thinking more along the lines of hot chocolate and a movie.”
“Well, that’s no fun.”
“Just what were you thinking…” he muttered under his breath before shaking his head at my grin. “Nevermind, I don’t want to know!”
The walk to 1-A’s dorm passed in comfortable silence, Ryuu practically glued to my side as he soaked up the warmth from my body. I wonder if his body reacts negatively to the cold because of his reptile-like quirk. I should ask him about that later.
We stepped inside and I immediately froze in the doorway, my eyes wide.
Ryuu took his shoes off, looking back at me curiously. “Jen? What’s wrong?”
“I, uh…” I swallowed hard, covering my mouth and closing my eyes. As soon as I stepped into the building, the smell of food had wafted to my nose, almost as if it were waiting at the door to tease me. It smells just like… like the house did every Thanksgiving morning. It’s the exact same smell.
A hand rested on my shoulder, Ryuu looking at me with worry. “Do you feel sick?”
“No, I just…” I took a breath, forcing a smile as I tried to ignore the smell. “Sorry, just remembered something.”
“Are you sure? You look pale…”
I chuckled, pushing past him. “I was born pale. You up for grabbing the hot chocolate and heading to my room for the movie? Not really in the mood for socializing.” I stepped into the kitchen and froze for the second time. What the fuck?
“If you’re not in the mood for socializing, that might be a problem, Winchester.” Kirishima grinned.
“You better fucking get in the mood, bitch!” Katsuki scowled, his face twisted up.
“Welcome home, Jen.” Izuku greeted, brightly.
“Huh, class A certainly loves going over the top for everything, don’t they?!” Monoma laughed, but it didn’t have its usual mocking undertone to it.
“I hope you don’t mind us joining you guys,” Kendo smiled, tilting her head.
My eyes scanned the faces of classes A and B, all stuffed into the kitchen around the table that had been covered in various dishes of food – turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole… Am I dreaming? I don’t… I can’t…
Ryuu embraced me, his hand finding my cheek. “You’re crying…”
“What? No, I -” I lifted my hand, wiping at my eyes. I am crying. I’m crying in front of both classes. They’re supposed to look at me and be reassured and feel safe, how can they do that if I’m crying my eyes out? Why am I even crying?
Momo and Ashido rushed over to me, pushing Ryuu away as they fussed over me, squishing me between them. “We’re sorry, we should have asked first!”
“Yeah, don’t cry, Jen!” Ashido squeezed me tighter.
“I don’t… know why I’m crying…” I sobbed, rubbing at my eyes furiously but the tears wouldn’t stop coming.
Izuku smiled sadly as he approached, pulling my hands away from my face. “All Might thinks you haven’t properly grieved for Gramps. That’s why I thought it would be a good idea to do this, to give you a chance to… to… properly grieve and to realize… to realize that you’re not alone!” His shoulders shook as his eyes filled with tears.
“Damn it, Deku! You’re supposed to make her feel better not start crying with her!!” Katsuki slammed his hand on the table, the silverware rattling.
“Can I… have a minute, please?” I asked softly.
The two girls exchanged a look before hesitantly pulling away. I bowed my head and stepped out of the kitchen, heading back out through the doorway. As soon as it clicked, I leaned back and slid down, my body shaking from the effort it took to hold back the rest of my tears.
‘Remember, kitten, life isn’t always easy. More often than not, you will face hardships and pain that will be so bad, you will begin to question why it has to be that way. However, just as happiness is often fleeting, so, too, is sadness. You may think that crying makes you a weak person, but I assure you it does not. Crying is a sign that you’ve been strong for too long, and there is no shame in it. Don’t be afraid to show your emotions, kitten. They are not your weakness, they are your strength.’
“Young Jen?”
“Toshi…” I sobbed, tears flowing down my cheeks as my body shook.
Warmth flooded me as I was brought into a strong chest, arms wrapped tight around me. A tired voice sighed from somewhere behind him, “I told you this was a bad idea.”
“Shouta…”
He kneeled beside us, his hand gently rubbing the top of my head. “Sorry, I should’ve stopped them.”
I shook my head. “No, I… I just…”
Toshi rubbed my back comfortingly. “When young Midoriya came to me and told me about his conversation with you the other night, I saw this as a teaching moment. He wanted to get together with the rest of your class, as well as class B, to have a Thanksgiving dinner in honor of your Gramps. I knew this would be hard for you, but I was sure that it was the right thing to do. You accepted the fact that he was gone, but you never grieved for him, did you?”
I shook my head, clutching his sweater between my fingers.
“When we lose someone we love, closure is important for us to heal and move forward. And… I worry that you might feel alone in this new world, but you have impacted those around you, even those from class B. They were more than happy to help out when young Midoriya explained things to them.” Toshi pushed me backward, grasping me by the shoulders and giving me his signature smile. “You are surrounded by people who love you, my dear Jen. Never forget that.”
And I smiled back, even with the tears still falling from my eyes.

When I returned to the kitchen twenty minutes later, several worried eyes snapped to me, no doubt noticing my red and swollen eyes, but I smiled brightly at them to ease their worries, stepping aside to let the two teachers inside.
“Hey, All Might made it!” Kaminari cheered.
“And Aizawa-sensei, too!” Kishima grinned.
“Does that mean we can eat now? I’m fucking starving,” Katsuki complained, his arm thrown over the back of the chair as he glared at the ceiling.
“Yes, let’s dig in!” Momo clapped her hands excitedly and the room sprung to life, everyone squeezing into the chairs around the table. Not everyone could fit, of course, and they ended up sitting off to the side or on the counters. All Might himself took up two and a half seats as he sat at the head of the table, laughing and chatting with the students as he told them stories from his youth.
I sat at the opposite end, between Shouta and Izuku, both of whom kept glancing at me with worry, though the greenette wasn’t trying to hide it like our teacher was. I chuckled, taking each of their hands with my own. “Thank you for this. It really means a lot to me.”
“Of course!” Izuku squeezed my hand, giving me a bright smile. Aizawa didn’t say anything, but he squeezed my other hand.
“You Sparky fuck, that turkey leg was mine!!”
“Huh? I don’t see your name on it, Bakugo.”
“Do you wanna die?!”
“Ahahaha! What deplorable manners class A has! Pathetic!”
“Be quiet, Monoma!”
“So many beautiful girls packed into one room, I just wanna touch them…”
“You’re disgusting!”
“Can you pass the cranberry sauce? Ribbit.”
“Here you go, frog girl!!”
“You’re too loud, Tetsu!”
“Hey, All Might, what was your favorite thing about America when you lived there?”
“That’s easy, young Kaibara! I loved seeing the -”
“Hey, you guys started without us!!” The room turned their attention to the doorway where Midnight, Gran and Present Mic stood. Midnight, who had spoken, huffed in annoyance. “There better be a turkey leg left!”
“Itps mjinre!” Katsuki mumbled around the turkey leg that he had stolen from Kaminari.
“You little brat, give it here!” She demanded, nearly jumping across the table to tackle him. His eyes grew wide and he took off, yelling obscenities at her as she chased him around the kitchen.
Gran approached me, putting her hand on my shoulder and smiling kindly. “Happy Thanksgiving, deary.”
I looked around the room, watching the chaos that was ensuing around me. And I smiled, my heart full of happiness and warmth. Things haven’t been easy, and I’m sure the road ahead of me is far from clear, but I’m surrounded by people that care about me, that I care about. Gramps… wherever you are right now, I want you to know that I’m okay. You don’t have to worry about me. These idiots may not be entirely sane and they may drive me up a wall sometimes but… they are home. My home.
“Hey, hey!” Mic raised his voice, making the glasses rattle. “Let’s go around and say what we’re thankful for! Start us off, Uraraka!”
She pulled a surprised face at suddenly being called before tilting her head and smiling. “I’m thankful that we can all be here together!”
“Excellent! Iida, you next!”
“I’m thankful to be with friends during this time of giving thanks!”
“That’s the same as what Uraraka just said but good job! Let’s keep this train a-rollin’, folks!”
“I’m thankful for music.”
“Boobs. Definitely boobs.”
“I’m thankful Bakugo didn’t kill me for that turkey leg…”
“I’m thankful that everyone here is so manly!”
“I’m thankful I’m not sitting next to Mineta…”
“Anime and manga, definitely.”
“I’d be thankful if this bitch would stop chasing me!!”
“And I’d be thankful if you’d give me that turkey leg you brat!”
“I’m thankful that all of you dears are healthy~”
“Hah, I’ll be thankful when class A finally goes down!”
“I’ll be thankful when I don’t have to babysit Monoma anymore…”
“I’m thankful I got to meet Kirishima!!”
“I’m thankful that I sparkle so beautifully. I am magnifi -”
“I’m thankful for this awesome food!”
“What about you, Jen?” Izuku asked, curiously.
“Me?” I hummed as several people looked at me expectantly. I grinned brightly. “Ain’t it obvious? I’m thankful for tacos!”
Zuku sweatdropped. “I shoulda guessed…”
“Well, you stick to your guns, at least, young Jen!”
“Speaking of,” I looked Zuku dead in the eye, my expression deadly serious. “Where the fuck are my tacos, bro?”
His body tensed and he swallowed hard. “Um, I… I didn’t see any mention of tacos when I was researching Thanksgiving…”
I clicked my tongue. “That’s fucking shameful, Zuku. No holiday is complete without tacos.”
“I-I’m sorry!”
I grinned, ruffling his messy hair. “Make sure you don’t forget next year, ‘kay?”
His face lit up and he nodded. “Of course!”

Chapter Eight: A Turkey Dance
Pairing: Steve Harrington x OC
Chapter Summary: After a little while, Thanksgiving has finally decided to show up. It causes Annie to have some realizations about everything around her.
Word Count: 3.2k
Warnings: Swearing, mentions of trauma, dysfunctional family stuff
A/N: Howdy, not gonna lie, I’ve run out of motivation over the last month. I’ve got up through chapter sixteen written, but reblogs and comments are the best way to help me get that motivation! Also, school’s starting for me tomorrow so that is definitely going to come before this fic. Anyways, if you’d like to see the other parts of the fic you can go here.
~*~*~*~
Thanksgiving was ordinarily a good enough holiday. There was food and a parade to watch plus a cute dog show afterwards. Annie's parents were never into football, so she never had to put up with watching the sport. However, this year was a little different than other years.
By a little different, that meant it was a huge difference. Initially, she assumed that it would just be her mom and herself sitting in front of the television and watching whatever was on.
Now, Annie wasn't against her mom dating someone else, but introducing the guy at Thanksgiving just felt a little bit weird to her. It could have been worse, though. The guy could have been a complete dick and Annie would have purposely made the day a living hell for everyone.
Fortunately, Scott Clarke was a nice guy. There wasn't any way around it. A part of Annie wanted to just hate him, but it was easy to like the middle school science teacher. How he and her mom met was beyond her, but her mom seemed pretty happy about it.
Steve told her to just give him a call if things got unbearable. His parents would be around, but he swore he would make up an excuse to help her out. What were friends for if not saving what was originally a well-liked holiday?
Everything was pretty nice that morning. Annie was working on baking a pumpkin pie and was making some mashed sweet potatoes. That was about the extent of her cooking ability. The pie was easy, she just had to pour a few cans of mix into the premade crust and make sure it didn't burn. The sweet potatoes were just the anomaly of being able to cook one thing decently enough.
"I've heard a lot about you from your mom," Scott said.
Annie nodded as she poured in the pie filling, "Yeah, I've heard a bit about you from some kids I know."
"Which kids?"
"Um... I think they're your AV kids? Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Will, and I think Max is in there, right?"
"Yes, you'd be correct," he grinned, "They're a bright group. How do you know them?"
"Um..." she paused, realizing she couldn't explain the real circumstances, "I helped babysit them a couple of times."
It was obvious that Scott was trying and Annie had to give him some credit. From how the kids talked about him, he was a smart and nice guy. While she wasn't ordinarily inclined to trust the judgement of a bunch of eighth graders, she trusted those kids.
While this wasn't the Thanksgiving Annie had counted on, it wasn't warranting a call to Steve. However, when the doorbell rang, a few alarms automatically went off in Annie's brain.
She went over to open the door and saw none other than Carter Hardwick. Already, she could feel her stomach twisting in knots. As nice of a guy as Scott was, she doubted that he dad would take well to him. Hypocritical yes, but what was a shitty parent if not just that?
"Anne, aren't you happy to see me?" he asked.
Annie forced a smile, "Uh yeah! Just um- just a bit unexpected."
"Well, I wrote."
Maybe she shouldn't have burned those letters after all.
Begrudgingly, she let her dad into the house. What other choice did she have? If her mom wanted to force him out, she wouldn't stop her. However, Annie was all too aware that she had no way of telling anyone what to do in this situation.
"And who's this?" her dad asked, nodding at Scott.
"Mom's new boyfriend," she said, her brain simply short-circuiting.
How couldn’t that have happened? The way her dad stared at the other man made Annie want to crawl into a hole. Thankfully, her mom came out into the living room. There was no hiding the look of disdain on her face. It was even more obvious when her mom asked him to talk with her for a moment.
He shrugged, "I'm sure whatever you have to say to me can be heard by our daughter and whatever asshole you've got over here."
"I'm speaking to you alone," her mom insisted.
That left the living room with only Scott and Annie. They both decided to just watch the dog show going on in front of them. Erik hopped onto the arm of the couch and Annie busied herself with petting him.
"So what's that little guy's name?" he asked.
"Oh, this is Erik. He's the family cat, but he likes me the most. Probably because I'm the most relaxed one in the house, I guess."
He nodded, "Poor, poor Erik."
"Wait... you've read Phantom?"
"Well, of course. It has some of the most amazing scientific ideas for the time!"
She thought a moment before nodding, "Yeah, I guess you're right."
While Annie wasn't sure what to think of her mom dating someone, she was at least glad this guy was nicer than her dad. The contrast was obvious when her parents both walked out.
"Anne, you'll be happy to know your good-ole dad's gonna be here for the day," her dad said as she dodged him ruffling her hair.
"You're not my dad," she said plainly before her eyes widened a bit.
That wasn't something she counted on coming out of her mouth, but she wasn't about to take it back. Technically, she was right. Neither of her parents were biological. Still, they took care of her like they were. Except, with all the things her dad had said and done in the past, she knew she could hold that lack of biology against him as long as she wanted.
"Go to your room!" he snapped.
Annie let out a laugh, "Are you serious?! You don't even live here! If you actually wanted to be a good dad you would... you- well you would pay the damn child support once in a while! You only have to make thirteen of them!"
"Annette!" her mom said, "I think you could use a moment to cool off."
That was the nicest way her mom could tell her to go to her room. Maybe she hit a nerve or two, but Annie knew she hadn't said anything that wasn't already true. There wasn't any use in arguing, though. Not when she almost wanted out of the situation. She picked up her cat and took him to her room with her.
This was the exact sort of thing she was supposed to call Steve over. So she took the phone in her room and dialed his number. As it turned out, Steve did have a phone in his room. One which they had both completely neglected that night a few weeks ago. A night she wasn't over by any means. She hadn't told her mom about any of it, and she knew that she probably would never be able to explain it. It still stuck around in her head. The inter-dimensional and the real things that happened just wouldn't leave.
She let out a sigh as she heard the phone ringing and she twisted the phone cord around her finger.
"Hello?"
"Steve?"
"It's not even noon yet," he said, almost laughing, "That bad already?"
Annie chewed on her lip, "My dad made a surprise visit... I kinda told him he's not my dad and to pay the child support for once."
"Oh shit..." he sighed, "I'd try to come and get you but um- my parents sprung a surprise trip to my aunt's on me."
"That- that's fine, I get it. You gotta see your family."
"If it's any consolation, I'll wish I'm not there. I'd really prefer to hang out with you."
She smiled a bit, "That's nice... I'd rather hang out with you too. Of course, I'd rather hang out with a cockroach than be stuck here."
"Well, if I make it back early enough, maybe I can make something work," he suggested.
"I'd like that a lot."
There was shouting in the background of Steve's end, "Uh I gotta go. Good luck, though."
"Thanks um- you too."
Then the phone clicked off and Annie set her own on the receiver. Admittedly, she almost counted on hanging out with Steve. Aside from the kids, there really wasn't anyone else she spent a lot of time with.
The thought of him trying to come over later did make her feel special. Not that she was about to say so. It was normal, they sort of just had each other. She didn't have any friends to begin with and she knew Steve would sooner die than third wheel his ex all the time.
Aside from sort of being social outcasts and dealing with the Upside Down together, what did they have in common in the first place? Maybe they had a similar sense of humor and similar music tastes, but almost anyone could have those things in common. They were just friends and Annie knew that didn't mean they had to do anything more than that.
Either way, Annie knew that she wasn't going to bother with leaving her room until someone told her to. Continuing on with her reading of War and Peace was fine with her. Contrary to her dad's opinions, she thought it was an interesting book.
A part of her was almost too invested in some of the drama of it all. What with Natasha now being tempted by Anatole as Sonya tried to be a good and loyal cousin as well as a friend. It had her reading the pages as quickly as she could. Though, a huge factor in getting through the book as quickly as she was had to be waking up in the middle of the night.
The nightmares didn't happen every night, but it wouldn't have made much of a difference either way. It was too much for her to deal with. While Steve wanted her to talk about it with him, she still didn't say much about it.
"Annie?" her mom knocked at her door.
She marked her book, "What's up?"
The door opened as her mom stepped inside, "You know, I think we still need a couple of things from the grocery store."
"Wait," she looked over the list being handed to her, "I thought we had-"
Her mom cut her off, "We're gonna run out soon. Just take your time, alright? There's no rush."
"Oh, okay."
This happened often enough when they lived in New York. If tensions got really high, her mom would send her out somewhere to do something. That didn't mean she missed out on all the yelling and arguing, though.
Still, it was enough for Annie to take the hint and grab her red, fleece-lined jacket off a hanger and left the house without saying anything. She was almost positive they didn't need any of this. They had more than enough butter and Annie could barely stand Stove Top stuffing in the first place.
She walked rather aimlessly, though she was headed toward the town. If she were too aimless, she would have ended up in the woods. As bright as the day seemed, she still didn't trust herself to go there alone.
Besides, she still hadn't found her switchblade since trying to fight Billy. A part of her thought it was possible he had it. Though, it was just as likely that it was in some obscure place of the Byers' house. She didn't want to go back there any time soon. It wasn't that she had anything against the family, but the thought of going back into the house or stepping into the living room? That was out of the question.
A part of her wished she had some way to actually make Billy pay for everything he did. The problem was that there wasn't any way to do that without giving away everything else. Not that she could think of, anyway. And who knows, maybe she didn't interpret everything properly. Maybe he hadn't done anything.
Her hands clenched inside her jacket pockets as she continued walking. A part of her wanted to tell her mom at the very least. The closest that got was when her mom saw the scar that the cut she got on her face left behind. She blamed it on getting into a bit of an altercation with Erik.
After walking for some time, Annie found her way to a small park. Someone was sitting on the swings. She could see the red hair from pretty far off, but she was unsure of who it was. Though, the closer she got, the more certain she was.
"Max? What're you doing out here?" she asked, sitting on the other swing.
Max looked over to her, "Um... just hanging out."
"None of the guys are available?" she asked.
Max shook her head, "It's Thanksgiving, everyone's with their families."
"Yeah? Well, then what're you doing out here? It's a bit chilly."
"Um..." Max let out a sigh, "You know how the whole divorced kid thing goes. It's my first Thanksgiving without my dad around and Neil and Billy are... um... they're being themselves."
Annie frowned, "They're not hurting you are they? Because if they are I-"
"No, not like that. After I almost hit Billy's nuts with that bat he's been a bit better. It still um- it scares me sometimes, though.
She nodded, "I guess that makes sense. I wish I could look forward to my dad showing up out of nowhere today, but that guy's a dick."
"Oh, was it just gonna be you and your mom?"
"And your science teacher."
"Mr. Clarke?!" Max exclaimed, laughing, "You're kidding!"
She laughed along with Max, "I'm not- I mean, having my mom date some guy like this is weird, but- but I guess things could be a lot worse, you know? Well, before my dad showed up and managed to make it awkward for everyone."
"Oh, that sucks. Sorry, I just don't know what else would help you."
Annie shook her head, "That's alright. You're, like, thirteen? You don't need to worry about helping me."
The both of them stuck around and talked to each other for a while. They managed to avoid actually talking about the awful things Billy had done. Likely because neither of them were prepared for a conversation like that. At the very least, Annie knew that just thinking about talking about that with anyone was enough to make her nauseous.
Eventually, it was for the best that Max went home, so Annie walked her back before turning around and heading back to her own house. She would have to face everything there eventually. But maybe her dad decided to buzz off by that point.
There was no such luck, though. As awkward as it was for her, she gave Scott props for not finding an excuse to get out of the house until the meal was over. If she were him, she  would have faked a family emergency in a heartbeat. Though, it was possible that he was just a better person than she was. Lots of people were.
"So, Anne, I've heard you're reading War and Peace," her dad said as they all sat around eating pie.
Annie nodded, "Yep."
"I don't understand why you would bother. I've already told you all the reasons it's a waste of time."
Annie set down her fork before looking over at him, "Maybe I started to realize you compulsively lie about everything. Oh, or maybe I realized people have different tastes from you. Hm, maybe it's the fact that I couldn't give a shit about your opinion of me after everything you've done."
"Language, young lady! Elsa, is this really what you're letting our daughter get away with?"
"I'm not your kid! If I were, you wouldn't send me a ten page letter about how I-"
"Cut it out! Both of you," her mom snapped, "Look, I'm not about to kick my own daughter out of my house, but Carter? I've done nothing but try to make this day decent and, frankly, I'm tired of that. I need you to leave."
Annie focused on her pie as her mom and dad headed out of the kitchen. It beat getting told to quiet down or to stop rambling. Although, it was clear the enjoyment of silence wasn't mutual.
"This pie is great," Scott told her.
She forced a smile, "Thanks... my mom ended up doing most of the work this year, though."
"You know, I hope you don't think I'm intruding on anything. I know this wasn't the best time to try and introduce myself."
"Look, I'm gonna be honest with you. Having my mom date someone is super weird, but I don't hate you. That being said, if you even so much as think about hurting my mom, I'll find a way to make your life a living hell."
Eventually, Annie was able to go back to her room for reasons other than getting into it with her dad. It was nearly midnight and she was focused on the book in front of her as she sat in her bed. There wasn't any school the next day, so she didn't worry about what time she went to bed.
Her distracted state didn't last long when she heard something knock on the window. When she looked out she only saw a shadowy figure outside and her eyes widened. Though, looking closer, it was obviously just Steve.
She opened the door, though she did so a bit sheepishly. How could she have been so easily scared by her closest friend? Steve slid in quietly, though there was a bit of tumbling in since her bed was right under her window. If he got his shoes on her light grey comforter, she would have probably screamed.
He grinned, "Told ya I'd come over."
"Steve, I- I wish you'd told me first," she said.
His smile faded a bit, "I can leave if-"
"No, sorry, just," she sighed, "I don't know, everything just really sucks right now."
There was a long pause before Annie let herself say what happened that day. She wished today could have been normal. That every day could be normal. If that meant her life was boring then so be it. Maybe all the boring people had it right.
"That's really shitty," Steve said, looking at her.
"Yeah."
"Hey, maybe it'll get better."
"Maybe."
A few more minutes and Steve was doing everything he could to get Annie to laugh. It took a solid half hour to get a real laugh out of her, but he did it. After getting her a bit more distracted, they ended up talking about everything except the things they should have probably talked about.
Instead, it meant both of them staying up until the clock in Annie's room read that it was nearly three in the morning. It was around that point that Steve passed out in the chair next to her desk and Annie was only partially on the bed with her head and torso laid out on the carpet and her legs on the mattress.

Haley: So how old are your guys’ parents, and did you ever growing up like regard them as like the old parents?
Alana: My… so my… Here's what's really fucking me up these days, is that Joe Biden graduated from the University of Delaware the same year my dad was born. So my dad was born in June of 1965 and Joe Biden graduated University of Delaware probably like May of 1965. So that's what's making me uncomfortable these days.
Lexi: You know when my mom graduated from the University of Delaware?
Alana: When?
Lexi: The nineties. (Laughing)
Alana: So my parents, they’re like kind of old. My mom was born in 1963, but my mom is also the third of four children.
Haley: Because my mom was born in ‘69 and my dad ‘67. And Robert’s parents… I don't know exactly when they were born but I know it's in the cluster of my parents. But my mom and dad were always regarded as like the younger parents. And it came up today because my sister's boyfriend's parents have always been regarded– my mom's like oh they’re older because my sister's boyfriend, Stephen, is the youngest of four. So my mom and dad got married three days after my mom graduated from college, but they waited seven years. Like they owned a freakin’ Subway and went backpacking in Europe before having me. Like they lived their life, if you will, and then they had kids. But all my friends, like growing up, all their parents are like five to ten years older than my parents.
Lexi: So my parents got married at twenty three.
Alana: Also ridiculous.
Lexi: They were born in 1972. No shade giving my mom’s age out, but honestly she's super young. We get mistaken for sisters no matter where we go, especially if we’re with my grandmother. They tell her she has two lovely daughters. I don't know if that's an insult to me or a compliment to my mother…
Haley: A compliment to your mother.
Alana: It’s definitely a compliment to your mother.
Lexi: My mother was invited to frat parties when she visited me in college several times.
Haley: No, your mother is smokin’ hot. Like my mother–
Lexi: She was the marching band MILF. Do you know the song Stacy's Mom?
Alana: Of course I know Stacy's Mom.
Lexi: The marching band, when we played it would sing Lexi’s mom.
Alana, singing: Lexi’s mom has got it goin’ on.
[INTRO MUSIC]
Alana: Hello and welcome to Lady History; the good, the bad, and the ugly ladies you missed in history class. by whipping sort of as always is Lexi Lexi what are you thankful for.
Lexi: I am thankful for you guys.
Alana: That’s gross. I am also joined(ish) by Haley. Haley, are you a white meat or dark meat kinda gal?
Haley: I really like– I guess like the– like a turkey leg? That’s dark meat. That’s my jam. I'm also not necessarily a turkey person.
Alana: And I'm Alana and I'm team captain of the cranberry sauce defense squad.
[Turkeys gobbling]
Alana: I don't think there is a good word for the people who were in the Americas before white people came to the Americas.
Lexi: There is not a good single word.
Haley: I also think that it's not us as non those people…
Alana: That's the thing. And that was the conversation that we had–
Haley: And I hate that I said “those people” because it shouldn’t be “those people” but like
but like for my grad school, we have a whole section of like repatriation, NAGPRA, all that lovely good stuff in our law class. And with our history and theory class there's always like this– kinda wanna call it a symposium?– We asked the question, and I think it was my professor who posed it, because she's like I have to talk about it and I'm a Jewish white woman. I know people like have their preference on Jewish people versus Jews and I want to be able to teach the correct thing. And everyone in the room said Native Peoples just because so many different tribes or groups don't consider themselves American. So that’s what I use. And I like that the like phrase and I’m probably– someone else probably saying this but I’m gonna make it up for myself right now; just go with what you know until you're proven wrong. Because like that's what I know and like for now.
Alana: But that's the thing that we were talking about not on the podcast, elsewhere, about how like I've never heard an actual Latinx person use the phrase Latinx.
Haley: I do not consider myself–
Alana: Except for on One Day at a Time actually.
Lexi: I feel like I always go with if I need to call someone something I'm going to ask them–
Haley: Yes.
Lexi: –What they identify as, and if I don't know them well enough to have that conversation maybe I shouldn't be speaking for them in any way… Or not speaking for them, but I shouldn't be like representing them. But it's really complicated when we talk about history because a lot of the words we use didn't exist then. Like Ida B. Wells considered herself Negro, and we wouldn't… we wouldn't probably use that word now.
Haley: Well like with pronouns. We don’t assume–
Alana: Exactly.
Haley: –pronouns. So like… Because I feel very weird when people like assume like my race or ethnicity. And I identify that… I identify with being Persian or Cuban more so than being a female if that makes sense.
Lexi: Right.
Haley: I've never… it's not like I'm non– like non binary. I identify as female but I've never been like a FEMALE.
Speaker 3: I feel like with gender it's so– so easy to once you decide to do it just start using they as a default when you're not sure what someone's preference is, and there's not that for race or ethnicity. There’s not like a default word where you can say a word and not be offensive. Like, okay. It's like the thing with the Washington Redskins which is now the Washington Football Team. There were a lot–
Alana: Which is what my cousin always called it. Was always calling it the Washington Football Team.
Lexi: Actually apparently they picked that because a lot of people did just call it that. But also it's not even in Washington DC so it frustrates the crap out of me. But apparently like a bunch of people were up in arms about it that were Native peoples but then a bunch of Native peoples were like nah it's chill. And so it's like you can't say that all these people agree on something.
Haley: Yeah.
Alana: Yeah.
Haley: That's where we go back to like–
Lexi: There isn't a single hive mind of all of these people you’re trying to represent. Everyone has these own little different versions. And so, you know, what I've been told by a lot of people is like narrow it down. Like for example if you're Omaha, you’re Omaha. If you’re Hoganashone you’re Hoganashone. Because that's how they like refer to themselves.
Haley: Yeah. Yes. And I’ve heard this too. Like– I’m gonna say this. I was on Tik Tok.
(Alana and Lexi laughing)
Lexi: Honestly cultural Tik Tok is very fun. Like culture-based Tik Tok.
Haley: I’ve landed myself on what was called by this group of Tik Tok– this flavor of Tik Tok– Native and Indigenous Tik Tok.
Lexi: Yeah I've seen that.
Haley: But I noticed that for the Tik Tok-ers who are in Canada would use Indigenous.
Alana: I will never tell someone of one group that something is not anti that group because I don't want gentiles to tell me what is and what is not antisemitic, I don't want men to tell me what is and is not misogynistic, I don't want… what's my other identity? Oh, I'm queer. I don't want straight people to tell me what is and is not homophobic–
Haley: “What's my other identity?”
Alana: “What’s my other identity?”
Lexi: “I can’t remember. I’ve got so many.”
Alana: What’s my other one? I’m like marginalized in three different ways and I don’t remember what the third one is.
Archival Audio: For our clinics are all specialized. Wednesday afternoons, for instance, we only see expectant mothers. But each one is a different problem, because each one is a different person. They feel they're special, too, and always seem amazed when they discover they have something in common with the other women, but that’s natural. After all, we all think of our health problems as personal problems.
Lexi: Today I'm going to tell you the story of Susan La Flesche, the first Native American to receive a medical degree. And as we discussed, we’re not sure exact on the terms people prefer. Susan lived a long time ago and regarded herself as Native American, that’s why I'm using that term, but I understand that some people may not use that term to refer to themselves. But she identified as that, so that's what I'm calling her. So yes, she was the first Native American to receive a medical degree. Susan was an Omaha woman. Her father Iron Eyes, or Chief Joseph La Flesche, the last Omaha chief selected by traditional tribal methods, and he was the son of a Frenchman and an Omaha woman so he was half French, half Omaha. And as a chief he believed the only way to save his people was to mix elements of their culture with Western culture and for his people to get an education. And it was these beliefs that shaped Susan's future. Her mother was One Woman, or Mary La Flesche, and Susan was born on the Omaha reservation in Nebraska in 1865. As a child Susan, witnessed a Native woman die because the local white doctor would not provide her care. This event sparked Susan’s interest in becoming a medical professional, with the goal of helping Native people. She attended a school on the reservation until she was fourteen and then she went to the Elizabeth Institute for Young Ladies in New Jersey. Can you imagine being fourteen years old and traveling from Nebraska to New Jersey on a train by yourself? That’s crazy. That’s absolutely crazy.
Alana: Goals. I wanna do it. I love trains. I love trains. I wanna do it.
Lexi: So I think she must have been really brave, because it just that's… that's pretty amazing. A long trip for a little girl.
Alana: Especially as like first of all it being a young woman which is already dangerous, no matter what, and she's also from this like marginalized community.
Lexi: Yes.
Alana: That it's like double dangerous, quadruple dangerous because she was fourteen.
Lexi: Yeah. It's crazy. It's crazy. Must’ve been really really brave. And really wanted to go to the school I guess. So she went there for three years and at seventeen Susan returned home and she taught at the Mission School on the Omaha reservation. At the school, she worked with Alice Fletcher, who was a white woman who was an ethnologist who studied and recorded American Indian culture. And she came to live and work with the Omaha because of her passion for archaeology so she wanted to study living people to better understand the past, which has been–
Alana: Ethnographic archaeology.
Lexi: Yeah it's a thing that a lot of archaeologists like to do. When Fletcher fell ill, Susan helped her recover, and after seeing Susan’s skills and passions for medicine and health care, Fletcher urged Susan to travel east and pursue a degree in medicine. Susan enrolled in the Hampton Institute, which was a school in Virginia that was built after the Civil War to educate formerly enslaved people and had since become a hub for educating Black Americans and American Indians. When Susan was attending Hampton, a woman named Dr. Martha Waldron was working as a teacher and the resident physician at the school. Martha was a graduate of the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania and suggested that Susan pursue further education there. Alice Fletcher, who had encouraged Susan to study medicine, assisted Susan by helping her apply for scholarships from the US Office of Indian Affairs and the Women's National Indian Association. In 1889, after two years in a three year program, Susan graduated top of her class from medical school. She spent one year doing an internship, which was similar to a modern day medical residency program in Philadelphia and then she returned home. At home, she became the primary care provider for about twelve hundred people, working at the reservation’s boarding school. In 1894, she married Henry Picotte, a Sioux man who had previously been traveling and working in Wild West shows. And they kept it all in the family with Susan's sister Marguerite deciding to marry Harry's brother Charles. So… that’s… that’s fun! After getting married, Henry and Susan had two sons and Susan opened a private practice which served both non white and white patients in her community. When Henry fell ill, Susan personally nursed him, all while working full time and caring for their two sons. At the age of forty, Susan became partially deaf, but kept working. In addition to being a doctor, Susan ran a children's library, worked as a Sunday school teacher, founded a quilting club, translated legal papers, and advocated for prohibition. In 1913, she opened a reservation hospital serving Omaha and Winnebago tribes. It was the first private hospital on a reservation anywhere in the country. Today, the building is a museum dedicated to tribal history and telling the story of Susan. In 1915, at just fifty years old, Susan passed away. Susan was important to her people because as aspects of their culture were taken away from them, she was able to draw a balance between traditional medicine and the practices that she learned at Western medical school. This worked because many of her people were still unsure about Western medicine, so by mixing their traditional healing practices with Western practices, she was able to develop a culturally specific plan of treatment. Her people grew to trust her and she began to be regarded as a modern medicine woman. She is a great example of why cultural representation is important and can impact public health. I also highly suggest watching the PBS video that I linked on the tumblr in the further watching. It’s super well made and it tells a really wonderful version of her story in a lot more detail than we're able to cover on our show and it has really good tie-ins to modern needs of communities like Susan's and interviews some modern female doctors and their communities which is really cool. That’s it. Short one.
Haley: I like– I like that story a lot.
Alana: I like that story too.
Lexi: Yeah there's not a lot about her like…
Alana: Right.
Lexi: People don't record shit, so it’s mostly just her accomplishments, unfortunately.
(Audio from Night at The Museum)
Haley: So my story is about– drum roll please– the retelling of the story of Sacagawea. And for all of you who might be screaming my name right now, saying Hey I'm not pronouncing her name correctly, hold the phone we’ll get there. I first need to do my universal apologies for pronouncing any words, even historically American English words, incorrectly because we all know me; words aren't the greatest for my speech mouth. And to start us off, I'm switching over to the like I said that actual pronunciation– Saka-Gawea. And it's Sacagawea because in my research there's not a soft G in the Hidatsa language, which translates to bird woman. So side note, there are a bunch of different spellings, but if we're going based on the true like translation– Sa-Ka-Ga is bird, and it's spelled with a G. So Sacagawea is Sacajawea but just like–
Lexi: Can I just say, that's way prettier than Sacajawea.
Haley: Yeah because like for some Sacagawea it's like you have the G, or you have S. A. K. A. K. A. W. E. A, or instead of the G. it’s a J. But there's no hard – or, there's no soft Gs it's only hard Gs. And as a person who has a really hard time pronouncing things from reading because of the dyslexia spectrum that we know to love, it's gonna– it's gonna be balls to the walls bananas.
Alana: It's like… Was it the first Night at the Museum movie or the second Night at the Museum movie where she was like a character?
Lexi: The first.
Alana: The first one. And then the museum like–
Lexi, whispering: And then she fell in love with Theodore Roosevelt
Alana: Oh yeah, and then she fell in love with Theodore Roosevelt which was so… oh NO.
Haley: I’m glad you brought that up because I cut that part out.
Lexi: That’s a whole can of worms.
Alana: But like there's that whole thing about them pronouncing it wrong but it's always Sacaga-wee-ah or Sacaga-way-a, and I’m like both of you are wrong.
Haley: Glad you brought up Night at the Museum because I had a whole tangent on that but then I was like roll back Haley your notes are already long to begin with.
Alana: You cannot expect me to not bring up Night at the Museum if it is even tangentially relevant.
Lexi: I love them, I hate them. It's an incredible thing.
Haley: Yeah.
Alana: Rami Malek!
Haley: Yes he was–
Alana: My first love!
Haley: Back to the notes. So for our listeners out of the United States, you may have heard of Sacagawea, of course with the Lewis and Clark exploring the west. However, I'm sorry– not sorry– to say that there's a solid chance that what you learned was completely incorrect and I'm looking at you United States education system. All of y’all education system just– the poop garbage, dumpster fire, whatever you would like to say. But let me pause for a second and explain a little bit why that story is kind of messed up because not only do we have like a white savior complex with like Lewis and Clark, we also just have a lot of sexism. Like sexism is painted in semen here. Like all over the board. No menstrual blood whatsoever to like brighten up this dreary painting of shit. Alana’s face right now is… holy crap what is she saying.
Alana: It's just a little bit like– Lexi what's the word that I'm looking for that is like… the sentiment behind it is that not all men have semen that not all women menstruate. Do you know I mean? That's my thing with–
Lexi: There's a single word? There's a single word for that?
Alana: There’s like a word for something… like reducing it to… whatever.
Haley: Yes.
Alana: And transphobia isn't quite right.
Speaker 1: That’s exactly why I use the phrase all semen in here. Because it's totally like heterosexual men explaining–
Alana: Cis heterosexual men.
Haley: Yes.
Lexi: The cis white boys?
Haley: Yes.
Alana: The cis white boys.
Haley: The cis white boys. However, it's a reason why the paintbrush is a phallic symbol, that’s all I’m gonna say. And while I will probably not tell the most accurate story, it's gonna be a hell of a lot better than what we've been given to because… I'm gonna be up front. There's so much more research I could have done and that's with all our stories. Like I think I put like three hours at least into like average for each story, sometimes more. I put in a lot more for this one. While Sacagawea was a Native people who symbolized peace and cooperation as she like navigated Lewis and Clark– with you know, the baby strapped on her back that like famous trope we have– through the west and like the Pacific… to get to the Pacific Ocean. There's a lot more to that story. First, because their crew was a crew of forty plus people; it wasn't just like the three of them moseying along like a hundred percent of the time, but we'll get to that. And even before then, I don't know about you guys but I never heard of like her growing up or her as an actual Native person. It was always “she’s with Lewis and Clark. Like she with the white people now,” never her life story as a whole, just this one small part, but I learned about Lewis and Clark's whole life story. And boy Howdy am I gonna talk about how she saved all their collective buttholes. So, while this story is both Native people’s legend and journals from the Lewis and Clark that we keep talking about. And we know that oral tradition it still history. So there are holes obviously with this timeline, but we know that she was born, or we think she was born in the Shoshone tribe in Idaho and was kidnapped at age twelve, possibly age ten. What I didn't know though is that when she was kidnapped– I knew she was kidnapped, but this is bad, I didn't actually know who kidnapped her, and it was a neighboring tribe. I believe it was the Hidatsa tribe? It was noted as a rival tribe. And from there she was sold into slavery and forced to marry Toussaint Charbonneau– C. H. A. R. B. O. N. N. E. A. U., we’ll go with that– a French Canadian fur trapper who had other quote Shoshane “wives.” So this wasn't… this wasn't great. Like it wasn't great to begin with, but we're just like still riding that train of yes you're not gonna tell a bunch of elementary school kids this story but let's not paint the picture and happy childhood. And in 1804, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark recruited no other than– I'm gonna call him TC, TC because I can't pronounce either of his names and I'm gonna keep fumbling on it– to be their wilderness guide. The geography of it was that the country almost doubled in size, but the history of it was the Louisiana Purchase was acquired by France.
Lexi: Acquired from France.
Haley: Yes. They were already on their expedition by the time they met up with TC and Sacagaweas. Sacagawea, who was sixteen and pregnant at the time, accompanied the men, and she was the only female of this shitshow of a shindig. And by shitshow of a shindig, this was like forty something other men with Lewis and Clark– like they had a whole rodeo. And we see this a lot that if people went on an expedition it wasn't just that group of people but they brought like their cooks, their wives, their children, people to like bring their food, i.e. like livestock because we didn't have fridges and such. So that like was not surprising to me. What was surprising was like that's a valuable teaching point, was just like to teach kids how did people move from place to place. And this is at the point where Clark notes that she was the most valuable member of their group, because although T. C. was like hired to give them like geography, he was like a noted French Canadian and a fur trapper, but noted as like he was not good at like navigating compared to Sacagawea and like the other Native peoples in the area. It was obvious and even Lewis and Clark were like “oh, she better” which she was. And she spoke both Shoshone and Hidatsa, and so she was like the interpreter for the white men, like literally. And that's the part like they got correct– and they being like the education system– that point was correct. She was interpreter, and shout out to the Brooklyn Museum for literally giving me the quote “interpreter for the group of white men”. Even the Brooklyn Museum’s not playing around. And obviously these white men weren't liked amongst the other Native peoples tribes, but when they saw a woman who wasn't considered to be a warrior– and that's like the key point– it wasn't just that they had a Native person with them. it was that she had a child with her, she spoke their language, and like didn't give off any alarm bells. Because also like there's that misconception that all Native peoples were friendly to each other. There are different like rivalries amongst tribes. That was just pure luck for them that that worked out. And so of course Lewis and Clark wanted to make their main man TC because his fur trapping knowledge and like how he knew the geography. And like I said that was… sure, he did some stuff. But Sacagawea basically said hold my beer, and she clearly knew where she was supposed to go. She clearly knew also just like the weather patterns, where to find food, and multiple occasions when they were like the Yellowstone area and it's really cold at night… we're in the parts where it's just snowing and dark for many many many parts of the winter. And she would like be able to not only like find but like somewhat grow or just like keep food in a way that like they would be able to sustain themselves with eating. So it was like a group effort by everyone. It wasn't just like Lewis and Clark being like “we got this, we’re gonna do it, we're gonna get to the Pacific Ocean in the middle of the winter.” Fast forward a bit– and there are a bunch of other stories of her being a complete badass, like diving into water when their canoe tips over and saving like all the important stuff; food, even like Lewis and Clark's journals. But we have to move forward, sadly, to the end of her expedition and just give her a well rounded story like I said. I wanted to hear this as a kid. And while the expedition ended in 1806, she kind of still knew Lewis and Clark. And let me do a side note here she did not receive payment for this expedition. Because like, yeah. That sounds like the right thing to do, I say with all my sarcastic cells in my body. There are a lot of them, by the way, so we're all doing a chorus of sarcastic singing. And three years later in 1809– another side note this is where at least my history kind of definitely has different stories, there's no concrete this is what happened…  There wasn't Snapchat recording everything, I guess. Clark invited Sacagawea and her family to live in Saint Louis and he also later adopted her son Jean Baptiste, and he called him Pompy, and a baby girl Lisette. And it's noted that she separated from T. C. who was abusive, but after this point like our timeline, we call dates in history, we know very little. And again, with this debated topic, her death is in that category. So records from Fort Manuel where like she lived there at a time, she supposedly died in December 1812 from typhus. And going off what Native peoples’ oral histories because again, oral histories are histories, she lived on the Shoshone lands in Wyoming until 1884. And regardless, Sacagawea clearly became somewhat of a legend with her own story being told by writers, filmmakers, historians in a time where women especially Native and/or Indigenous women, were absolutely thought of as weak, not helpful, and sometimes even dangerous. So you might be asking yourself, “Haley, where do I find other resources?” Obviously check out our show notes, they are quite lovely, and honestly children's books. The most recent ones were kind of on point. They're all about like– especially now in 2020. And then specifically in the show notes look at the Brooklyn Museum and the National Women's History Museum. And that is my story.
Alana: Hey National Women’s History Museum, do you want to give me an internship?
Haley, singing: Manifestation.
(Archival Violin Music)
Alana: Zitkala-Sa was born February 22, 1876, that makes her a Pisces. She's technically an Aquarius/Pisces cusp. And Zitkala-Sa means red bird in the Sioux language. She was born on the Yankton Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Her mother was Sioux and her father was white. Her father abandoned the family and initially when I see white father, Indigenous mother… that is alarm bells in my head, but she did have an older brother, so less alarm bells. Quieter alarm bells. And just as an FYI, a blanket statement, we had the discussion that we're not really sure if we should say Native or Indigenous so I kind of use both, mixing it up. If you know someone who has an opinion let us know and we’ll use that going forward. I think that's kind of a good general statement for this podcast; is correct us if we're wrong and we'll change our ways. Because that’s how you–
Haley: Correct us with kindness.
Alana: Oh, yeah. Correct us with kindness. Be nice.
Haley: We have feelings.
Alana: We can’t handle it. Don't be mean to me. At the age of eight, so 1884 she left the reservation when Quaker missionaries came to recruit for their– massive air quotes– school and it was only a school if by school you mean forced assimilation centers, but we'll get to that a little bit later. It was literally called the White’s Indiana Manual Labor Institute, and the U. S. is still racist, I'm not saying that it’s not racist, but at least we're not racist enough to let something with a name like that slide. I feel like… baby steps, little progress. Zitkala-Sa’s mother didn't want her to go because her brother had come back from a school and she didn't like it but Zitkala-Sa begged and begged because for kids who had never left the reservation, it seemed like a magical place and it sounded so cool. Her mother did eventually acquiesce because there were no schools on the reservation and she really wanted Zitkala to have an education. But she later wrote that the second she got on the train to Indiana she regretted fighting so hard for it. She was forced to cut her hair and pray like a Quaker, which she hated. Pray like a Christian is like…  that's intergenerational trauma in my heart. She actually hid from the people who were working at the school and they had to tie her to a kitchen chair and cut her hair. I don't know if it was actually a kitchen chair, I just wanted to make a Leonard Cohen reference. Hey Alana, are you Jewish? Yes. But she really did enjoy learning how to read and write and to play the piano and the violin. She was given the name Gertrude Simmons, which is a footnote that will only come up at the very end of the story. In 1887, she returned to her mother's home but she felt like she didn't belong there. And this was a common theme among children who had been sent to these– massive air quotes– schools because they felt like they didn't really belong to their Indigenous culture but they also weren't really like the white Americans. In 1895, she enrolled at Earlham College for a teacher training program and then transferred to the New England conservatory to continue studying violin. In 1900, she became a music teacher at the Carlisle Indian School but left because it reminded her of her traumatic experiences at a similar school. She basically came to the realization, she was just like “oh shit, they are designed to take our culture from us.” She was like “I couldn’t be part of that anymore.” In 1901, she published Old Indian Legends, which was a compilation of all of her previous writings and culminated in a lifelong project of translating Sioux traditions into English, because this is a quote from her from the beginning of the book, “America in the last few centuries has acquired a second tongue,” which is so shady. And I love it. “Acquired a second tongue” is just like. Mm. So also in 1901 she went back to South Dakota and took a job at the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs, which I will refer to going forward as the B. I. A., where she met Captain Raymond Bonnin, who was also a Sioux, but I couldn't find what his like Sioux name was, since he was also full Sioux, but probably not Raymond. But then they did have a son and name him Raymond so I’m not sure.I don't know. They were transferred to Utah, where Zitkala-Sa taught again, but not at a white school, at a reservation school where the children lived at home and she found that like to be a balance. In 1910, she met William Hansen who was a music professor at Brigham Young University, and in 1913 they completed The Sun Dance Opera which was about a Sioux ritual that the federal government had banned, which I think is… What a workaround. What a way to beat the system. She viewed music as a way to bridge the cultures that she was a part of and it did, and that culminated in The Sun Dance Opera. She joined the Society of American Indians, which is a group that lobbied for citizenship for Indigenous people and cultural preservation because nuance. Which is a thing that I am feeling recently. Just nuance. Tattoo it on my forehead, shout it from the rooftops. Nuance. She became the secretary of the Society of American Indians and started interacting directly with the B. I. A. where her husband worked. She was very critical and vocal of their policies because they wanted her to pray like a Christian which– (frustration noises). The intergenerational trauma, she just– she do be jumping out. And her husband was fired. Was it because of her criticism of the B. I. A? Maybe? Who’s to say? I can't say, but maybe. But they moved to Washington DC, where she started giving lectures about cultural identity and continued her work with the Society of American Indians. She even was briefly the editor of American Indian magazine. In 1924 she became active in the General Federation of Women's Clubs, which was like a women's rights group but make it intentionally diverse. It was grassroots campaigns to support women of all backgrounds, and we simply have no choice but to stan.
Lexi: Intersectional feminism.
Alana: Intersectional feminism. We love it, we love to see it, we love to see intersectional feminism like in the twentieth century, before it was cool, if you will. She started a universal Indigenous movement that led to the passage of the 1924 Indian Citizenship Act which, as the name implies, gave Indigenous people citizenship but not necessarily the right to vote because that was still up to the states. In 1926, she co founded with her husband the National Council of American Indians to continue lobbying for the rights of Indigenous people. She died January 26, 1938 at the age of not quite sixty two and is buried in Arlington Cemetery with her husband. Her gravestone reads Gertrude Simmons and then Zitkala-Sa which makes me feel a little bit weird but at least it's on there. I don't know if she like had a choice what went on there but I think it's cool that it's on there. And she was the first Indigenous woman to write her own autobiography without the help of an editor or translator because she was just good at English. She was also very anti use of peyote, which is really interesting because she was like alcoholism on the reservations is a huge problem and so we need to like do something about our ingesting of substances. It’s like all these things are about nuance which is something that I'm again I'm feeling so so much about nuance. It's something that I've been working on in therapy for like three years. That's not true, for two years. That I'm just like we can have two things that coexist– that like it would be in everybody's best interest to be an American citizen, but that doesn't necessarily mean that all of these Native people have to abandon their rituals and their culture. It’s that whole melting pot thing which is such a like when you think about a kind of a weird image… put people in a melting pot. Anyway. That’s a fun note to end on. That’s all I have to say.
Lexi: I just want to add that I think I've mentioned this before on the podcast but I worked on a project at the Smithsonian Libraries called Women in America: Extra and Ordinary. I'm the one who suggested this lady because I thought Alana would like learning about this lady, and I just want to kind of talk about a little bit why I put her in the project. The thing that I love about her is that the Portrait Gallery has pictures of her that were taken when she was quite young. I believe in her twenties.
Alana: They’re gorgeous.
Lexi: And they're beautiful because they're so like real. Like–
Alana: I think my favorite one is– now that I've mentioned it Lexi, you probably have to use it in the graphic– but it's her having grown her hair back out with her violin.
Lexi: Yes.
Alana: And it's just like how it's like… Once you know the background of that, it's like this is how she combined these two cultures by like really enjoying playing the violin and also having her long traditional hair.
Lexi: She’s just so like… It's like she could be your friend. Like she’s just a real person. And so like, I don't know. They’re good pictures. Go look at her pictures.
Alana: Go to the show notes, look at the pictures, they’re great pictures.
Lexi: And– Okay, I think– Okay, this is the root of it. I think when you see pictures of Native peoples from that time, so many times it's like they're wearing like outfits that aren't even correct for their culture and they were forced to pose in like ridiculous like customized versions of their own culture. Like I've seen ones where people who weren’t Plains Indians were put in Plains Indians’ attire for pictures. But like she's just hanging out and I really like that. I just love her. So much.
Alana: She’s so cool.
Lexi: And her name means red bird.
Alana: And her name means red bird, and Lexi loves birds. Lexi loves birds.

Richie Tozier and the Birth of His Child
Summary: Richie and his fiance Eddie rush to get to the hospital because their very good friend, and surrogate mother, Beverly, is in labour, and Oh my god it's happening quickly!
Rating: T (for language and mentions of medical procedures)
Word Count: 4235
Notes: Is this a repost of my own work? Yes. Do I care? No :)
Alright guys, so this is totally self-indulgent, and it basically goes like "Crying Richie and Eddie doing skin to skin with their newborn baby." So here it is. Please note, I know barely anything about pregnancy or birth or surrogacy so I guessed a lot and nothing is accurate, but does anyone really care?

Richie Tozier and the Birth of His Child
Eddie was a light sleeper. He had no problem waking up when Richie got home from late night gigs, and he was always up within the first chime of his alarm in the morning. But recently, Eddie had taken to sleeping like a baby.
A sharp ring pulled him out of his gentle slumber. He’d been having a pleasant dream, one he was annoyed to be woken up from by what was probably a wrong number. Eddie grumbled looking at his phone, startled by how bright it was momentarily, but soon his annoyance turned to panic.
10 Missed Calls from Ben Hanscom
“Shit…” Eddie mumbled, quickly calling him back. “Dude—”
“Eddie I’ e been calling you for an hour, what the fuck man?”
“Sorry, I’m sorry, I just… I fell asleep.”
“Richie isn’t picking up either, is he with you?”
Eddie sat up in bed, Richie’s side still empty. “No man, he’s doing some radio show thing tonight, he probably doesn’t have his phone on him. Is everything okay?”
“No… not really. I mean yes, everything’s fine technically, but… but Bev…”
“Shit, what happened, is she okay? How’s her vitals?”
“No, no, nothing bad, it’s just… Eddie, it’s go time.”
“Alright listeners, it’s almost time for Richie Trashmouth Tozier to sign off for the night. We’ve got time for one last call.”
Richie drummed his fingers on the table, adjusting his headphones.
“And it sounds like we’ve got Eddie calling in from Newport Beach.” Rocky, the host shot Richie a look, eyebrows raised. “Eddie, what’s your question for Trashmouth?”
“Hey Rich—”
“Is that Eddie Spaghetti I hear? Hey man, what’s up?” A smile overtook Richie’s face quickly at the sound of his fiancé. He was out publicly now, but he hadn’t quite introduced Eddie to the world. They’d talked about it, but Richie was hesitant to drag Eddie out and open into his world.
“Ben’s been trying to get a hold of yo—a hold of us.”
“Ben? What’s handsome Hanscom want with us?” Richie’s heart was racing.
“It’s Bev… babe, it’s go time.”
“Go time? It’s… oh my god it’s time? I didn’t think that was supposed to happen for another few weeks?”
“Her water just broke, they got to the hospital half an hour ago.” The room was silent for a moment. “Rich, this is happening now!”
Richie’s heart still pounded, but his nerves were hidden behind the giant giddy smile he sported.
“Oh my god Eds, it’s happening. I—I’ve just gotta sign off, but I’ll meet you at the hospital in 20?”
“Yeah. I’ve got the bags, I’ll meet you there.”
“I love you, drive safe.” Richie slipped out, missing the obvious shock on Rocky’s face.
“I love you too babe, I’ll see you soon.”
Richie’s expression was half nervous, half ecstatic.
“Well, well, well, Richie, I think before you actually sign off, you have some explaining to do.” Rocky smiled and looked towards Richie knowingly.
He chuckled nervously, a blush rising in his cheeks. “Umm, yeah. Th-that was Eddie. He’s a friend from back home that moved out here because we’re… well, he’s my um… he’s my fiancé.”
“Trashmouth Tozier is gonna be tying the knot? Good for you man, that’s incredible!” Rocky clapped Richie on the back.
“Thanks Rocky, means a lot. But um, I really do have to sign off. Our good friend Bev is in labour, and um… well… we’re gonna be dads!”
“Woah! Dude, what are you still doing here? Go get your man! But you should come back and tell us all about Eddie and all about fatherhood when you’ve settled in a bit. We’d all love to hear how it’s going.”
“Yeah, for sure! Well, thanks for having me on the show Rocky, I’m gonna go have a baby now.”
Rocky chuckled. “You heard it here first folks, Richie Tozier is ditching the Trashmouth to be a daddy.”
Richie ran into the hospital waiting room and immediately stormed the nurses’ station. “Hi, I’m Ri—”
“Richie!” Eddie ran in moments after him, arms full with an overnight bag, nursing pillow, diaper bag and a bouquet for Bev.
“Hey babe, let me grab that.” He took the pillow and diaper bag from his fiancé’s hands and kissed him lightly.
“You both must be here for Beverly. She’s down the hall in 407.”
“Thank you!” Richie called after the nurse as Eddie pulled him towards the room.
They quickly find room 407, and enter to find Bev moaning, gripping Ben tightly as he stroked her hair back and whispered sweet words in her ear. The two stopped dead in the doorway, watching as their friend rode out the contraction.
“Finally, you guys made it.” Ben said as the pained look on Bev’s face melted into a smile with the end of her contraction.
“Fuck both of you, I hope you’re happy with one kid, cause I’m done after this.” Bev hugged both Eddie and Richie, careful that he IV drip didn’t tangle.
“When do they give you the juice?”
“Yeah, you’ve got to be far enough along for the epidural by now.” Eddie walked around to check Bev’s charts, having no clue what any of it actually meant.
“That’s the problem, she’s too far along for a full epidural. They gave her a little something for the pain, but they think it’ll be over before the full thing even takes.”
“Shit, how far along are you?” Richie took Bev’s hand and sat on the edge of her bed.
“Seven and a half centimeters. It all moved way faster than I thought it would.” Beverly rubbed her belly lovingly.
Richie smiled and pressed a kiss to her head. “I’m gonna go grab a coffee, could be a long night.”
His mind wandered as he looked for the cafeteria, back to that first conversation all those years ago.
 July 1993
“I always wondered what it would be like to be pregnant.” Bev pulled her shirt up a little and rubbed her flat tummy. “Bill wants kids… but I don’t think I want them.” She said taking the joint from Richie. The two of them had gotten rather close since she’d started really dating Bill, close in a way that neither of them had ever been with anyone else.
“I think I want kids. My mom is always going on about how good I am with my baby cousin, and the neighbor’s kids love me.”
Beverly giggled. “Well I’m sure you’ll find a nice girl to settle down and procreate with.” Richie’s smile faltered. “What?”
“N-nothing.” He took the joint back and took a long drag from it. “I-it’s just…” He felt Bev’s hand lovingly stroking his back, calming his shuddering breath. “I know I’m a math nerd not a science nerd, but I’m pretty sure you can’t get a dude pregnant.” His cheeks went red as the silence between them increased. “Bev, I’m gay.”
Richie closed his eyes as he felt Bev’s arms wrap around him. “Rich, you can still have kids if you’re gay.”
He looked to his friend, tears shining in his eyes. “You think?”
“Of course.” She bumped him with her shoulder. “I just said I wanted to be pregnant but not a mother. You can turkey baste me if you want, I’ll have your kids.”
Richie smiled and kissed her cheek. “I love you Bev.”
“Love you too, Trashmouth.” She rested her head on his shoulder. “So… would I be wrong to say you have a crush on Eddie then?”
His cheeks heat up. “Don’t wanna talk about it Ringwald.”
When Richie arrived back at the room, Eddie was waiting outside. “The OB/GYN is in with Bev now, wanted to give them some privacy.”
Richie nodded, pulling Eddie into his side. “You ready for this, spaghetti?”
“Y-yeah.”
Richie’s head spun quickly to stare at his husband to be skeptically. Eddie’s eyes were trained on the ground. “You didn’t even fight me on the name. What’s wrong Eds? Don’t tell me you’re getting cold feet.”
“No! No, I’m excited, but… what if I’m not a good dad? What if I can’t give her what she needs? What if I turn out to be just like my mother?”
“Eddie, that’s not gonna happen.”
“But what if it does?”
“It won’t, trust me. You’ll always have your feisty little teenage self, fighting for her on the inside. While your mom was a great lover, she was a real asshole, and I know you remember how shitty that was.”
“Fuck you, the wedding’s off.” Eddie flipped him off, but with a smile.
Richie kissed his cheek tenderly. “I love you too.”
 November 2002
“I can’t go home. I don’t think I can face her.”
“Eds, chill out. So what, your mom knows you and Myra broke up, not a big deal.” Richie and Eddie had started renting a spacious 2 bedroom apartment in Brooklyn just a few months earlier.
“But what if she told my mom the reason why we broke up?”
“Long distance? Eds, a lot of people break up because they can’t handle distance. You got a job in New York, she didn’t want to move down here. That’s not something you’ll get criticized for at Thanksgiving dinner.”
“We didn’t break up because of distance you fuckwit, we broke up because I’m gay.”
Richie’s words died on his tongue. “Wait… what?” Eddie slumped onto the couch with his head in his hands. “Eddie, are you serious?”
Eddie nodded. He just wanted to curl in a ball and die, not have this conversation.
“Hey man, it’s okay, there’s nothing wrong with that.”
“Easy for you to say, your parents threw a fucking party for you when you came out. My mother’s going to disown me.”
“Would that really be such a bad thing?” Eddie looked up and shot Richie a look of fury. “Okay, okay, sorry, that was in bad taste. Look Eds, your mom is an asshole, you don’t need her.”
“But she’s the only family I’ve got.”
“Eddie, you know that’s not true. You’ve got the Losers, and you know Maggie and Went love you. And… and you’ve got me.”
 “Thanks Rich.”
“I’m serious Eds, I’ll always be here. You don’t need her if she won’t accept who you are.”
 “I love you Richie.”
Richie smiled and pulled Eddie in close. “I love you too Eds.”
“No, Richie…” He pulled away so he could look at him properly. “I love you.”
Bev’s contractions slowed to a halt, and Richie was grateful for his coffee break as he looked over Ben and Eddie’s sleeping forms.
“Can you believe this is happening?” Bev asked Richie, lacing her fingers with his.
“It’s kinda surreal to tell you the truth. I was thinking about when I came out to you all those years ago, and if you would have told me then what we’re living through right now, I would have laughed in your face.”
She smiled. “I was so head over heels for Bill, I can’t believe I never even looked at Ben.”
“Dude you hit the jackpot. Who knew Ben would be the hot one, I always thought it would be me.” Beverly giggled as she chewed on her bits of ice. “I… Bev, you know I love Ben and all, but is he… god, is he okay with all this?”
 1 Year Earlier
 Richie’s jaw dropped. “Bev… you don’t…”
Tears sprung to her eyes. “Sweetie, I know I don’t have to, but you want a baby, and I want to help you two.”
Richie and Eddie had just announced their engagement a few months prior, and had dropped on their friends that they’d started looking into adoption. Beverly couldn’t help but think back to the conversation they’d had all those years earlier.
“But… but what about you two. I-I can’t help but feel like we’re taking something away from you.”
“We’ve spent a lot of time talking about this. We decided years ago that we don’t want a family, and we’re very much at peace with that.” Ben put his arm around Bev and continued. “Richie, I know how close you and Beverly are, and when she brought up that she wanted to do this, I knew that this was the right thing to do.”
“Only if you want to. Think it over; I’d be honored to carry your child, but only if you’re both comfortable with it.”
“He’s more than okay with it Richie. Trust me, he’s really excited for you. I’m really excited for you.” He knew she was telling him the truth. Bev and Ben went crazy helping Richie and Eddie set up a nursery, baby-proofing their house, buying toys and outfits for their new arrival.
“You’re just excited you won’t have to change diapers.”
She giggled. “Shut up.” Her heart monitor sped up as she felt another contraction come on. “Oh fuck, fuck here it is again.”
Richie clammed up, but took her hand like he saw Ben do before, rubbing her shoulder lightly with his free hand. “You got this girl. You’re doing great Ringwald, I love you.”
Beverly giggled, coming away from her contraction, letting her grip on Richie’s hand loosen.
“Ahh, I see daddy finally made it.” Dr. Burke, Bev’s OB/GYN came in with a myriad of supplies.
“Yeah, both of them are here this time! The other one’s passed out unfortunately.” Richie gestured towards Eddie.
“That’s okay. Figured we’d need some of this stuff in another little bit.” The chipper woman smoothed her lab coat after placing some blankets in a hospital-grade bassinette. “Just came to take a little looksee at how mom’s doing.”
Richie sat up beside Bev again, anxiously awaiting Dr. Burke’s verdict.
“Well, all is looking pretty good. You’re just at 10 centimeters; you’ll probably feel ready to push any minute now.”
A shiver ran through Richie. They were so close to holding their baby in their arms. Eddie stirred from where he was asleep in his chair. “Eds, I’m gonna go call my parents real quick, I’ll be right back.”
He nodded, and Richie ducked out of the room.
It only took two rings for Richie’s mom to pick up. “Hey sweetie, is everything okay? It must be what, five in the morning down where you are?”
“Yeah, I know it’s early. I just—Bev’s in labour.”
Maggie gasped, and Richie could hear a muffled “what?” in the background from his father.
“Oh my goodness! How far along is she? Never mind, we’ve got everything packed, we’ll be on the next flight out to California.”
“Rich!” He turned around to see Eddie’s panicked face peering through the doorway. “They’re gonna have her start pushing soon, Bev wants you with her.”
Maggie gasped through the phone again. “Is that Eds? Give him my love, tell him I’ll see him this afternoon. Richie, I’d better let you go, if she’s pushing soon, then it won’t be long now. I’ll call you when we land. We’ll come straight to the hospital.”
Richie chuckled. “Okay, love you mom. Got any last minute tips?”
“No matter how many times the doctor says it, don’t look between her legs. You’ll never look at a vagina the same again.” Richie’s dad pipes up.
“Well it’s a good think I don’t make a habit of looking at vaginas anyways dad, but thanks, I’ll refrain from staring at my best friend pushing my child out of her bits. Love you guys, I’ll see you in a few hours.”
Richie rushed back into the delivery room and took his place beside Bev again.
“How’s grandma and grandpa Tozier?”
“Oh you know, giving me advice that I really didn’t need.” He laughed and patted her hand.
“Went warned you not to look down there, didn’t he.”
“Yup, that’s exactly what he did.”
Bev giggled and laced her fingers with Ben’s.
“Jesus Marsh, never thought I’d see a woman in labour so happy.”
Eddie chimed in, joining Richie at her side. “Drugs finally kicked in, I think she’s a little loopy.”
“Hey, I’m about to push a watermelon out of my body, I think I’m allowed to be a bit loopy.” She huffed out with some difficulty, adjusting her position. “Shit, it’s definitely time.”
Suddenly, it was like the room sprung to action. Dr. Burke’s playful demeanor became slightly more serious as she and the nurses helped prop Bev up into a more comfortable position. Richie was handed a foot, Ben was handed the other, and Eddie took his spot near her head, a damp cloth in hand.
It was all a blur if Richie was being honest. A lot of yelling: words of encouragement from Dr. Burke, sweet nothings from Ben, shouts of effort and pain from Bev. And then suddenly, “Alright, here comes the head!”
Richie’s own curiosity got the better of him, and against his dad’s advice, he looked.
And promptly fainted.
“Richie!” Both Eddie and Bev screamed as they watched him go down. A nurse joined Eddie on the floor, cold towel in hand, helping him up as he was revived.
“Dude, what the fuck!” Eddie felt Richie’s neck, looking for a pulse as he blinked against the bright lights. His face was filled with worry and annoyance, but his tone had no bite to it.
“Why am I on the floor?”
“You’re okay, we see a lot of fathers fainting in the delivery room, nothing we haven’t already dealt with.” The nurse chuckled as she helped Richie up and into a chair, handing him a juice box.
He quickly chugged the juice and motioned to stand back up, but the nurse pushed him down. “It’s probably best you stay seated, just for a few more minutes.”
“B-but, the baby, Bev…”
“Don’t worry, you won’t miss much. The last baby I delivered, mom pushed for a full hour.”
“Jesus.” Richie sat back and swiped a hand over his face, tearing up. “Bev you’re a fucking superstar.”
“Love you too Rich, but I’ll love you more when I get this kid out of me.”
He chuckled, lacing his shaking fingers with Eddie’s.
“Babe, you okay? You went down pretty hard.” Eddie carded his fingers through Richie’s hair with his free hand.
“Don’t I always go down pretty hard?”
“I fucking hate you.” Eddie kissed the crown of his head. “I’m serious, how are you feeling? Do you feel light headed? Do you need something to eat? Does your head hurt?”
“I’m okay. I just saw something that no human being should ever have to see. I think I became more of a feminist today, fuck.” Eddie chuckled. “Dr. Burke, top marks to you and your iron stomach.”
She giggled and gave him a thumbs up.
Eddie took Richie’s spot, taking Bev’s foot in hand, while Richie scooted forward in his chair to take her hand.
It seemed to go on forever, each minute stretched out longer than they’d ever experienced, but before long, a gentle cry was heard from the end of the table.
Bev’s face melted, a cry of relief left her lips as she slumped back against the bed. Richie wanted to support his friend, but couldn’t help but look towards the small screaming human in Dr. Burke’s arms. Once he laid eyes on her, he couldn’t tear them away.
His eyes misted over, and he couldn’t even bother to move his glasses away from his face to wipe them.
“She’s beautiful.” He heard Eddie sigh beside him, his voice sounding watery.
“Would you like to cut the cord?” A nurse pointed a pair of scissors towards the two of them, and Eddie nodded, taking them in hand. Richie’s hands shook as one of his covered both of Eddie’s, and the cord was cut.
Eddie pulled Richie into a tight hug as their daughter was brought away to get cleaned up. “I can’t believe she’s here.”
The nurse hesitated between the two couples before heading over to Eddie and Richie. Richie stepped aside so Eddie could take their daughter first, his hands still shaking ever so slightly.
“Richie, why don’t you pop your shirt off?” Dr. Burke approached him.
“Why doc, you trying to get a piece of this?” The joke was weak, but she laughed anyways.
“Skin to skin contact Richie, so you can properly bond with her.”
“Right, we talked about this at one of Bev’s appointments.” He nodded, pulling his t-shirt over his head. “The tossing a baseball around and letting her eat ice cream for dinner when Papa’s not around doesn’t come till later. See, I remember shit.”
She and Eddie giggled as Eddie passed their baby over to Richie. She was warm in his arms, her small breaths hitting his chest, rustling the tufts of hair there, and she was so, so tiny. For the millionth time that day, Richie was crying.
“Hi there, I’m your daddy. Holy shit you’re so tiny!” His hand covered most of her little back, it was nothing for him to rub the soft, pink skin, worried his rough fingers would hurt her.
Bev was giggling through her tears, and ben snapped photos of the tender moment. “Do you guys have a name for her?”
Eddie nodded. “We talked about it a lot, shockingly the one thing we actually easily agreed on.” Ben thought back to their fight about the nursery colour and chuckled. “We decided on Margaret Hannah Tozier. Maggie for short, after Richie’s mom, and Hannah because it kind of sounded like Hanscom… we wanted as much Marsh and Hanscom in her name as we could.” His voice cracked, seeing Ben tear up. “Ben, I know she’s not yours, but—”
Ben rushed forwards to hug him, cutting Eddie’s speech off. “Thanks man, that means a lot.”
“It’s beautiful.” Bev said as the nurses attended to her.
“We—we were actually hoping you guys would be her godparents.” Eddie asked them meekly.
“Of course, we’d be honored.”
Eventually, the nurses had to take Maggie away from Richie to take her measurements, but he’d made them promise to bring her right back. They all watched as Bev nursed her, whispering sweetly and pushing her beautiful dark hair back.
“Shit, can you believe this?” Eddie sat down beside his fiancé and took his hand. “Who would have thought out of everyone in the Losers club, us and Stan would have babies first?”
“I mean, Stan will always be the most responsible Loser. Even as teenagers I could have told you he’d be the first one to knock someone up on purpose.”
“What do you mean knock someone up on purpose, like plan for a child?” All four of them turned around to see Stan standing in the doorway, gift bag and flowers in hand. “Hey guys!”
“Hey, it’s Stan the Man!” Richie stood up and hugged his first friend, getting choked up at the sight of the little pink bag.
“This is for you guys, well more for the little lady, but she’s stuck relying on you two assholes until she can fend for herself.”
Eddie chuckled, carefully taking the tissue paper out of the bag and showing Richie the adorable little onesie in there.
“Patty knit her some stuff in there too. She’s been knitting sweaters for Sam like crazy, he’s growing like a weed, but I guess that’s what happens when you’re a year and a half old.”
“Aww, thanks dude, this is great.” Eddie clapped him on the back. “You’re officially our first visitor.”
“I knew I would be.”
The group laughed, unfortunately waking Maggie from where she’d fallen asleep against Bev.
“Hold on, I’ve got this great little trick, watch.” Richie stood and whipped off his t-shirt, careening towards the bed.
“Dude, I don’t know what your trick is, but I’m not so sure I want to see it.” Stan said, a smile overtaking his face.
Richie took Maggie in his arms, opening her tight swaddle and put her up to his chest. The feeling of his skin on hers immediately calmed her down.
“Shit, not even Sam was that responsive to skin to skin.”
“Yeah, it’s shocking, but he’s got a gift.” Eddie came up beside Richie and adjusted Maggie’s little hat. “She’s really taken with her daddy.” He stroked her little cheek with his finger, watching her fall asleep against Richie’s chest. Eddie’s eyes were drawn upwards at the sound of a loud sniff from his fiancé. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” Richie shook his head, letting his tears fall.
Ben chuckled. “As you can see, Richie just has a lot of feelings.”
“Hey man, it’s been a long day. Trust me, I’ve been there.” Stan smiled, taking a seat beside Bev. “Good to see Richie’s still the emotional one.”
“Dude, let me take her, go blow your nose. You’re gonna get snot all over her.”
“Aaaand Eddie’s still neurotic.” Stan chuckled, shaking his head.
“Fuck man, you’re such a good dad.” Richie handed Maggie over to Eddie and ran to grab a tissue. “I love you so much, I can’t wait to marry you.”
“Can’t wait either dipshit.” Eddie turned to his friends as Richie left for the bathroom. “Oh my god, he’s gonna cry at her kindergarten graduation, isn’t he?”
Stan clapped him on the back. “Couple more months and he’s yours forever.”
“Fuck me.” He replied, sending his friends into a fit of laughter. Truth be told, he wouldn’t have it any other way.
***
Cool, well thanks for sticking around for this complete and utter disaster. Drop a comment or a message or whatever if you liked it, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Just to clear a few things up, in my head, Richie was the "donor" because Eddie didn't want to pass on any potential illnesses.
I was also gonna add a line about Ben setting up Maggie and Sam in the future, but it didn't really fit anywhere, BUT it's a cute thought and also Stan and Richie being reluctant fathers of the groom/bride because that would mean they were actual family would kind of be hilarious? Anyways I'm kind of into that idea so stay tuned for a sequel? Drop a comment maybe and tell me if you'd want that?

Stark Spangled Banner Ch11: A Turkey Called Marv
Tumblr media
Summary: Nat, Clint, Evans, Lawson and the rest of her SHIELD team throw Katie a leaving party once news of her resignation spreads across the Triskellion before Katie and Steve head to New York to spend their first Thanksgiving as a couple with Tony, Pepper and Bruce.
Paring: Steve Rogers x OFC Katie Stark
Warnings: None for this chap, bar a bit of bad language and teeth rotting fluff
A/N: There is an accompanying One Shot to this called The Life Of Marv...
“So I thought about putting in a pool…” Clint said, “Now the kids are bigger I thought it might be nice to have one. Maybe even a pool house round it for bad weather…”
"That's ambitious." Nat quirked an eyebrow.
Clint grinned. "That's my middle name."
"Really?" Katie asked. "I always thought it was Robert."
"What?" Clint looked at her as Nat snorted out a laugh.  "Francis.  Why would you think its Robert?"
Katie shrugged "You look like a Bob."
"Wait… so it's not Ambitious?" Nat asked, winking at Katie. "How boring…"
Katie nodded, draining her glass.  "Bob would have been better,"
"Right," Clint started, pulling himself taller. "I hate both of you."
The girls laughed and Nat turned to Katie. “So what’s in the pipeline for you now Nova?” “I have no idea.” Katie said, and she didn’t.
No way was she leaving Steve in DC to move to the tower. Although they had only been together 7 months she had spent over a year of her life being 'with him' one way or another and the thought of not being terrified her.
“Nah to be fair Nat, they’ve been going out a while now. Things are probably starting to cool off.” Clint teased “Oh trust me, there’s no problems in that department.” Katie sniggered, looking at where Steve was stood.
“Oh would you look at that. I’m out of alcohol…” Nat said, suddenly “And so is Stark.”
"There's a bar over there," Clint pointed
“Cheers…”Natasha took Katie’s glass and handed it to him along with her own. Clint shook his head taking the glasses with a sigh.
“So… now he’s gone…” Nat glanced over at Steve then back to Katie “Gimme details…”
“Details on what?”
“Throw me a bone here Stark. I’m working on a few months dry spell.”
“Why are you so obsessed with my sex life?” Katie groaned “You’re constantly trying to get me to talk about it.”
“Hey, look, up until a few months ago I was convinced he was a virgin…”
“Well then you’re a dumbass.” Katie smirked “He’s Captain America, had girls throwing themselves at him back in the day.” "So he was until the serum?”
“I never said that…” she flushed.
“You’re such a shit liar.”
“Can we change the subject?” Katie groaned.
“Ok, answer me one question and then I’ll drop it.”
“What?” Katie said with an air of playful frustration. If she was honest, it was quite nice to have a girlfriend to chat to about these kind of secrets.
“Did the serum enhance…everything?” Nat wiggled her eyebrows.
Katie glanced over at Steve and smirked before she looked back at her. Fuck it.
“Well if it didn’t, I’ve no idea how he managed to stay upright before.” she smirked "I'm a lucky woman"
The party went on well into the early hours of the morning and Steve had practically had to carry his girl home, not to mention holding her hair back whilst she puked up God knows how much tequila. She had a hangover to end all hangovers the day after and had hardly moved from her spot on his sofa bar to top up her glass of water and to find something crap to eat. They’d had a Chinese that night and she’d practically eaten everything on the menu before showering and crawling back into his bed, swearing she was never challenging Evans to a tequila drinking contest again which Steve had assured her was a pretty good idea.
Now, a fortnight later they were at the Tower in New York, and it was the night before Thanksgiving.
"What are you doing Soldier?" Katie asked, jumping a little as Steve's arms came around her sides, reaching for the sink, effectively trapping her between the counter and his body.
He laid his chin on her shoulder. "The dishes,"
“I’m only leaving the pie dish to soak.” she said, turning in his arms. “The rest are going in the Dishwasher.”
“Oh because God forbid her majesty would actually wash a dish…” he teased as he rest his chin on her shoulder.
“You don’t wash them much either.” she said, rolling her eyes “How many brushes did you break last week?”
“The plastic is bad quality.” he said, pouting a little.
“Nothing to do with your ridiculously large hands being too rough.” “You weren’t complaining last night…” he said, lips warm against her cheek. Katie could hear the smile in his voice before she swatted him in the face with a dishtowel, and he laughed out loud.
“Seriously though Doll face, are you nearly done?” he said, “You’ve been in here all afternoon. You do know we’re not eating till 3 tomorrow, right?”
“Yeah but the more I do now, the less I have to do tomorrow, and let’s face it, it’s not like I have anything else to do, on account of being an unemployed bum.” she said making Steve laugh again.  “Plus, I just want everything to be, you know…right.” she shrugged, and she did.
“It’s a dinner.” Steve said, chuckling slightly.
“It’s Thanksgiving” she pouted
“Yeah, and last years was pretty cool, remember?” he smiled
“Honey, tomorrow is gonna be great.” he smiled at her, tipping her face up to look at his “Don’t sweat it.”
“Did you seriously just say don’t sweat it?” she sniggered.
Steve groaned “I told you I spent the afternoon with your brother…”
She giggled and leaned up to catch his lips in a soft kiss.
“Getting kinda tired of catching you two making out in a kitchen!” Tony chose that time to waltz in and open the fridge door “You got your own floor, go use it." ******
Katie woke the next morning to find Steve's side of the bed empty and cold. It wasn't unusual for him to be up earlier than her, she knew he would either be out running, in the gym or making coffee. She climbed out of bed and walked to the blinds of the bedroom, instructing JARVIS to open them, the AI being one of the many perks about being 'home'. The New York skyline stretched below her and as she glanced down she saw the people gathered on the sidewalks, attention turned to the streets, obviously waiting for the Thanksgiving Parade. She had asked Steve if he wanted to go and watch it in person but he had said he would prefer to stay in and watch from the tower as he didn't fancy getting mobbed in the street. The parade wasn’t supposed to start until 9 and that meant by the time it made its way to the Avengers tower it would be... she turned and glanced at the click and gave a yelp. She had slept in until 10.
Steve heard her before he saw her, not that he needed super hearing to hear the loud yell of "how fucking late?" coming from the bedroom. Grinning to himself he turned back to the griddle on the island of the kitchen, flipping a pancake with one hand and drinking a coffee with the other. "Why didn't you wake me?" She grumbled to him as she leaned in the kitchen doorway, taking him in for a moment. He was freshly showered, dressed in a loose grey t-shirt and sweats, hair still a bit damp and spiked up in a way that made her smile. "Because you were up early yesterday and I thought I'd make you breakfast for a change." he said as she wrapped her arms around his waist, pressing her face into the back of his shoulder. The smell of his shower gel mixed with the smell of the pancake mix, made her nuzzle her nose into him to inhale deeply. "You smell good." she eventually spoke again. "Good to know." A grin tugged at the corners of his lips at the fact she was still clinging to him. "I just saw a giant inflatable Turkey." she said, hands going to rub at his stomach. "What?" "The parade" she smiled at him. Steve smiled. "You know when I was a kid, the parade was the best part of Thanksgiving." "Still is" she mumbled, cheek still pressed to his shoulder.
"Me and Bucky used to come into Manhattan with his family and my ma if she wasn't working and stuff ourselves on popcorn and warm mixed nuts" He smiled to himself at the memory. Part of him had wanted to go to the street to watch it but after seeing that morning how crowded it had been on his run he was happy to watch it from the comfort of Katie's floor. He turned to face her for first time that day, her arms still round his waist. Her hair was pulled up into a pony tail, face fresh, eyes bright and she was, as ever, in one of his shirts and not a lot else. He leaned forward to give her a quick kiss and when he moved away, she quickly closed the space to give him another quick kiss, letting her lips linger on his for a second. "I'll burn the pancakes" he murmured and she grinned, pulling away. "I'll make fresh coffee." she said, patting his chest and turning to the machine. "Hey JAR..." she spoke, "hit me with some Christmas tunes buddy" "The usual Miss Stark?" "As long as it has the Pogues on..." "Wouldn't dream of not doing" the AI replied and then the apartment was flooded with the sounds of Fairy Tale of New York. "It’s November." Steve turned to look at her, but she simply grinned to herself and turned around, singing to him. He couldn't help but laugh, he knew from last year that Christmas for her started at Thanksgiving and ended on New Year’s Day. Plus the fact that the previous year she had spent Christmas day fighting a bunch of exploding super soldiers meant that she was going to enjoy this year as much as possible. He shook his head, a low chuckle escaping before he turned back to his pancakes. They dragged the cushions off the couch and ate breakfast sat by the huge floor to ceiling windows of the penthouse, Katie sat between Steve's legs as they both watched the parade. Suddenly, a large green balloon floated by the window and Katie gave a loud squeal when she saw what it was. A Hulk float. An amused smile spread across her lips as she watched the balloon bob in front of the window, twisting to the sides in the air as it wrestled with the wind. "Oh my God!" Katie giggled again, gently tapping Steve's right calf but he had already spotted it. A massive shield was coming out, followed by Iron Man's mask, Thor's hammer, a bow and arrow, Natasha’s Red Widow symbol and her own Nova star. She turned to look at him, a little smile was tugging at the corners of his mouth and when he met her eyes the smile broke out across his features. Laughing in disbelief, he shook his head, turning his attention back look at the shield float bounce down the street. "That's pretty cool." he commented with an amazed sigh, and it was. If anyone had told him all those years ago that one day he would feature in the Macy's Thanksgiving parade he would have told them that they were mad. Yet there it was. He found himself smiling as he thought about how his ma and Bucky would have reacted. When they had finished eating, Katie leaned back into him a little more, slouching so that her knees were bent and her feet rested on the bottom of the window. His arms reached round her neck, and he kissed the back of her head as they continued to watch the floats, the gentle sound of Bing Crosby "White Christmas" now playing through the room, the two of them simply enjoying the closeness of one another. Tony was thankful for his friends, family and a decent brand of scotch he had in the cupboard for later, Pepper was thankful for being so fortunate and being surrounded by people she loved, Bruce was thankful for being welcomed into their family home, not just for today but since he had taken up residency just after the Chitauri Battle, and Katie was thankful for being in the presence of people she cared for, and for the last year being so much better than the previous 12 months. She shot a wink at Steve as she said that and he beamed before he realised they were waiting for him.
"err…” he cleared his throat “I guess I’m thankful for being given a second chance, being welcomed by you all…and for, err, you.” he grinned at Katie who gave him a playful roll of the eyes but the flush on her cheeks told him she had understood.
“Awww.” Pepper said, as Tony made a gagging noise which resulted in Katie throwing a carrot at him. He pointed at her, frowning.
“No food fights on my floor, Kiddo.” he said sternly and she simply raised an eyebrow at him, taking a sip of her wine.
The food was good, not that anyone expected anything else. Both Tony and Banner managed 2 servings whilst Steve made it through 3. And then there was the pie. Steve managed a piece of each, whilst everyone else could only face one, but no one cared. And he found himself secretly pleased that there was enough left for him to scoff later on.
“I’m so glad I wore leggings.” Pepper sighted, leaning back and massaging her stomach.
Katie nodded in agreement, also dressed in leggings and a long jersey dress. “Think I’m having a food baby.”
"Yeah, I gotta hand it to you Kiddo..." Tony said, leaning back in his chair, undoing the top button of his pants and massaging his stomach “That was absolutely awesome."
Steve's hand dropped to his girl's leg under the table and he gave her knee a little squeeze as she reached for her wine glass, before moving his arm to drop it round the back of her chair. "I certainly prefer the Turkey dead and cooked anyway" Tony added and Katie groaned. "Are you ever gonna let me live that down?" she looked at him. "No" he shook his head. "What's this?" Steve asked, setting his glass down. "Did she not tell you about the time she brought home a live Turkey one year? Katie sighed as Steve sat up, turning to her, smirking "No..." "I was 17 and going through a meat is murder phase." She waved away the comment with her hands. "I was in the way home and saw him. He was the only one left in the farmyard so I liberated him" "By liberated she means stole." Tony quipped, standing up to retrieve 2 more bottled of Rijoca from the bar as laughs rang round the table. "No one came looking for him" She shrugged. "Marv lived a happy life for 5 years in our back garden" "Marv?" Bruce looked at her, a smile creeping across his face. "After the character from Home Alone." She said simply
“You had a turkey called Marv?” the scientist deadpanned and she nodded.
"He was a great pet. Used to chase Tony around" "The bird was a fucking menace"  Tony frowned, topping everyone's glass up. Settling back into his chair, Katie noticed Pepper giving him a look and he started suddenly as if he was remembering something. He leaned forward and looked at Katie. "So I know we don’t do Thanksgiving gifts kiddo but I was thinking yesterday about something you said to me once, about having a vision for a publishing company."
She had been a single mother, struggling to make ends meet, and even after she had written the books it took her years to get a deal, being rejected by 4 different publishers before Bloomsbury (a small, independent group) took a chance on her and it paid off for both of them. Katie loved the rags to riches story and since then had always harboured a desire to do the same thing for other authors but it had never really been much more than a pipe dream.
"It was an idea I once had." She shrugged, looking at Tony. "Then things went a bit crazy." "Well... how about we make it a bit more than an idea?" Pepper said. "What?" Katie frowned, looking at Pepper, then he brother who nodded. "I want you to put a proper proposal together, business plan, mood and story board that type of thing." He said, waving his hand in that Tony-esque manner "Then we're gonna look at what we need to set it up and take it to the board. Run it as a Ltd company under the Parent company of Stark Industries, but you'll be the Managing Director." "I..., I can't run a business!" She stammered. "Didn't you run the UK branch of SI for a while?" Bruce looked at her, smiling. Was everyone in on this bar her? "That was different." She pressed. "Why?" Steve asked. "Shut up Steven." She said without even looking at him.
There were a few chuckles round the table before Tony continued. "Look, you don't need to work." He shrugged "You have enough capitol behind you plus the revenue from the business as it to live your life out as an IT girl,  but we both know you'll end up killing someone if you get bored, and that's likely to be Cap seeing as you see him most so this is for him as much as you." "Thanks Tony." Steve tipped his glass to the Inventor who winked. Katie pondered. It really had been a dream of hers since leaving Uni, putting her degree and passion into her work and she would be lying if she said the thought didn’t excite her but it was a hell of a big commitment, and what if it all failed?
“I'll help you." Pepper smiled at Katie who was biting her lip. "I'll proof read the proposal and I'll be there every step of the way whilst you set up.” she leaned back in her chair. "The week before Christmas there’s another board meeting. I suggest we use that to pitch the idea." she concluded and Tony nodded.
"I think this could be a great opportunity for you and Stark Industries." Tony looked at Katie "and you'll get full autonomy over it as you'll set up your own sub-board to feed up into the PLC" This was amazing. She looked at Steve who nodded encouragingly. “What is it you keep saying to me? You’ll never know until you try?” he smiled at her. She took a deep breath and looked around the table before throwing caution to the wind and letting out a huge grin. "Ok. Fuck it. Let's do it." **** After another half an hour or so of chatter, and a bottle of champagne to celebrate Katie's agreement to the business idea, everyone chipped in to clear the table before retiring to the plush living area of Tony and Pepper's floor for more drinks and chat. Then the alcohol  really did start to flow, Steve and Tony moving onto the scotch,  the soldier watching as everyone around him descended into that well recognised drunken haze. And then out came Drawing Without Dignity. A game he had never played before and frankly found vulgar, but couldn’t help but enjoy it. The game fast slid into chaos which was to be expected with an extremely competitive Super Soldier who had a natural advantage as he could actually draw, an equally competitive billionaire and a normally mild mannered scientist who also was quite cutthroat when it came to winning it turned out. Pepper and Katie spent most of the time sniggering at the bickering men, and at the point when they were laughing that much when it was their go, the 3 boys got so frustrated they banned them from playing. For that, the next time Steve asked her what one of the more risqué sayings meant (he had cringed at a fair few of them over the course of the evening) she lied to sabotage him earning her a full on Captain glare. "That was a pretty shitty thing to do." He grumbled at her as Tony and Bruce were both howling with laughter. "Not my fault Captain Sex Fiend doesn’t know what Rimming is!" Katie shot back, wiping away her tears. Steve had to bite back his own laugh at the ridiculous nickname instead he fixed her with another glare which she returned with a simple shrug of her shoulders. The game ended, and Steve and Tony called it a draw, which was probably the easiest thing to do since Pepper had stopped taking count and tallying towards the end. It was now well after 10pm and Steve looked around the room as Tony stood up, a little unsteady on his feet, teetering back over toe the bar.
“I think maybe we’ve had enough…” Pepper hiccupped slightly looked at Tony who had been reaching for another bottle of liquor, wheeled round slightly too fast causing him to stumble into the bar.
Katie cackled as Tony looked at Pepper “Shut up Mom.” he said, grabbing another bottle of scotch in one hand and the open bottle of Kristal the girls were drinking in the other. He walked carefully over towards the sofa, as he dropped down into it heavily, handing Katie who was on the floor in between Steve’s legs, her back resting against the sofa, the champagne. She took it and poured herself and Pepper a glass, quite pleased that she didn’t spill any.
“You know he… he can’t get drunk!”  Tony handed Bruce a now full glass, pointing to Steve.
“That’s sad…” Bruce surmised, taking a sip of his drink before Tony sat bolt upright, and pointed at the scientist.
“Hey, I wonder if Hulk can get drunk?”
“That’s an…that’s an…ex…exper-expediment I don’t think we should do.” Bruce shook his head, hiccups punctuating his speech.
“Absolutely not.” Steve shook his head as Katie cackled.
“But it would be for science purposes…” Tony pressed
Bruce wrinkled his nose and shook his head “No Code Green.” “Spoil sport.” Tony said.
They stayed for another hour or so, until Pepper fell asleep and Katie’s cheeks were flushed pink and when she asked for a bottle of water Steve knew it was time to go. After asking Tony if he needed help getting to bed, and the man declining, Steve stood up, surprised to find he actually felt a little bit of a headrush. Ok, so maybe the 3 bottles of that scotch had had a little effect after all, but he felt the fizziness ebbing away as he pulled Katie to her feet and she grinned up at him.
“Wanna carry me Soldier?” she asked.
He arched an eyebrow and in one swoop had her over his shoulder, causing her to shriek with laughter.
“Night!” she waved from her upside down position. Tony and Bruce waved distractedly from where they were now trying to mix some form of cocktail at the bar.
“You can put me down now…” Katie patted Steve on his back as they boarded the elevator. “Steve…”
He smirked to himself, ignoring her giggles and protests and didn’t put her down until they reached  the bedroom where he tossed her down on the bed and set about showing her exactly how thankful for her he was.

We were back on the ground. After 100 years the humans were finally home. Sure some never left and they survived somehow, but the ones that went up into space were finally home. Me and a bunch of other criminal kids were sent to the ground first to see if it was safe, nice right? Note the sarcasm. Lucky for me my best friend and boyfriend were sent down too. My best friend Monty Green and My boyfriend Jasper Jordan. Those two were two peas in a pod, there was no separating them. Now in the beginning there were a ton of problems and we weren’t always friends with the Grounders. But now everything was chill, maybe it was just for the moment or maybe it would stay like this. No one knew, but we enjoyed it for the time. Now that we didn’t have to worry about people killing us, we decided to start bringing back old traditions from before the world ended. Well we weren’t totally sure what day it was, but it was definitely fall. So we were gonna celebrate the old Holiday, Thanksgiving. The hunters went into the woods to find something to make for the feast we were making. One team actually managed to find a turkey! It was a shock to everyone, but we weren’t gonna question this miracle. No one’s actually had turkey before, but people from before us said it was good. So really we’re trusting the word of old people that we never really met. Jasper offered to deep fry it which wasn’t a horrible idea, but this is Jasper we’re talking about. He’s not exactly the best person to trust with this, so I offered to help him. We managed to build a deep fryer that would hopefully work, with the help of Monty and Wick.
“Okay, so this probably has to fry for a few hours right?” Jasper asked.
“Probably, I don’t know. We don’t exactly have a cookbook.” I said and he laughed.
“Well, we’ll just wing it!” He said and I shook my head with a smile.
“Winging it it is.” I said and he gave me a goofy smile.
“Okay, so we just shove the bird in there and hope for the best?” I asked looking at the fryer.
“Yep.” He said. I helped him lift the dead, headless, plucked bird into the fryer and we heard it sizzle.
“That’s a good sound right?” I asked.
“Probably.” He shrugged and sat down on a nearby log. I sat next to him and he got a fire going so we wouldn’t freeze.
“This everyone will be pissed if we get this wrong?” He asked.
“Probably.” I said with a shrug mimicking him. He shoved me with a smile and we both laughed.
“Then let’s try not to fuck this up.” He said and I nodded. We spent the next two hours on that log, occasionally checking the bird to make sure it wasn’t burning. We were talking, laughing, and just having a great time.
“Okay, okay-” I laughed.
“What about the time you a Monty tried to sneak into the Chancellor's office just to see if the rumor that he had a live fish in there was true?” I asked and he laughed.
“That was a great time!” He said and I shook my head.
“You guys were so lucky you didn’t get in serious trouble!” I laughed and he nodded.
“Yeah or I wouldn’t be dating you right now.” He said and I smiled.
“Lucky for me then.” I said and we kissed.
“Okay, what about that time the three of us-” Before Jasper could finish his sentence there was an explosion from behind us. I felt the hot oil burn my back and arms. I screamed in pain and tears fell from my face. Before Jasper could react to me screaming, parts of turkey rained down onto us and we each screamed because of how hot it was. He quickly got up and got all the turkey off us. People ran over to us and they looked around us.
“What happened? Are you guys alright?” Monty asked walking over to us.
“The turkey exploded.” I answered in pain.
“Y/N’s burned.” Jasper said. Abby pushed her way over to us and she looked at me.
“Let’s get her inside and take care of the burns.” She said and we nodded. Monty and Jasper helped me to the medbay and they sat me on one of the beds. Abby fixed me up quickly and told me and the boys how to take care of my burns.
“Are they gonna go away?” I asked and she smiled at me.
“They’re not super bad, they should go away.” She said and I nodded.
“Rest in here.” She said and left the room. I turned at looked at the boys and they both looked concerned.
“Hey, you heard the doc, I’m fine.” I smiled at them.
“Yeah, but you’re still gonna be in pain for a bit.” Monty said and I shrugged.
“Could have been worse.” I smiled.
“I’m sorry baby.” Jasper said and I shook my head.
“You couldn’t have known.” I said and he sighed. I smiled at him.
“Guess we fucked up the turkey huh?” I said and the two boys laughed.
“Only you could joke at a time like this.” Jasper said.
“It’s not a joke! We really fucked up.” I smiled and they shook their heads.
“I think everyone will forgive us.” Jasper said and I nodded.
“They better!” I said and they laughed again.

Chapter 10 - My Time To Shine
From the time I was seventeen I've been responsible for the meals prepared at the biggest holiday of them all; Thanksgiving. It's taken over as my personal favorite because I get to spend the day doing what I love, and what I do best. When it comes to me cooking for thanksgiving, my family has learned a few things. I know what I'm doing, don't distract me, and don't change my music. We got the week off from school, so I stayed up at my parent's house to get prepped for the upcoming event. Everyone was curious as to what kind of stops I was pulling out this year, but as always I wasn't saying. I'd come up with some new ideas I wanted to try out, and this was as good a time as any. When my siblings moved out I had my choice of which room I wanted to call my own. I picked Selena's room since it came with the best sunset views, and got the best night time breezes. When I got to be around sixteen I made the decision to paint the walls from the dark purple to a red. I hoped Selena wouldn't be too upset at what I'd done to her room. When I moved out, our parents kept the room relatively the same, but now there's not a bunch of clothes on the floor like I'm used to seeing it. I woke up early Tuesday with the task of doing the shopping on my mind. I called up my siblings to see which one of them could accompany me. Only Natalie was available, so I waited for her to come and pick me up.  Natalie unlocked the door and let herself in with baby Lexi in her arms. Before I could get up for a hug, she forced Lexi into my arms. "GOTTA PEE!" She screamed running to the bathroom. Lexi smiled at me as I held her close. "Your mommys so crazy Lexi. Did you know that?" "Yeah." She said laughing. Lexi can answer yes or no questions, but to whether or not she knows what it means remains to be seen. Natalie emerged from the bathroom looking relieved as ever. "Okay we ready?" She asked. "Yeah." Lexi said again putting her hands up. "Aha I guess that's a yes, let's get going!" I put Lexi in her carseat behind me. Natalie plugged in her phone and turned on the car. As the engine started the radio turned on. What came on wasn't music, but was some very intense whispering that sounded like it could be right in your ears. I gave Natalie a confused look before she practically slammed her hand into the off button. She fumbled around with her phone to put on actual music. "Um..what the fuck was that?" Natalie's face was turnning red. "Just some..patreon audio.." "What who's voice is that even?" "Dude it's so crazy it's this chick that does anime voices, but y'know makes them say bad things.." "Oh my god Natalie you're a freak haha." I palmed my face laughing hysterically. "Shut up! We all have our little things. This one just happens to be mine." "So..it's like audio porn?" "NO ABSOLUTELY NOT." She smacked the back of my head. "You little shit head.." "Ow!" "I am still your big sister y'know! Need to show me my respect!" We continued our drive to the store. When we got there  Natalie just followed behind as I pulled items into the basket. I was on a mission to get everything i needed. I didn't look back a few times, and at times lost Natalie through the crowd. "Elizabeth! Slow down a little!" When we finished checking out we went back home to put them all into the fridge. "Jesus how big is this turkey?" "Fifteen pounds." I answered looking through the vegetables, and looking through my checklist. "Can I just say I'm so glad you're good at cooking?" She hugged me. "Aha you could stand to mention it more often." The front door unlocked by Selena with her kids and Sam. "Helllo?" Selena called out for anyone home. "We're in here!" I answered. The kids rushed into the living room diving onto the couches. "Excuse me boys!" I stood there hands on my hips. Cole and AJ looked at one another before making their way towards me. I leaned down. "Hi aunt Liz." They said together hugging me, and kissing my cheeks on each side. "Love you guys." I smiled mussing up their hair as they walked back. "Well hey sister, excited for thanksgiving?" I turned to Selena. "Always! Gotta break out my fancy maternity pants so I won't lose a button." "Oh my god haha." I started taking out bowls to do as much prep work as I could before hand to make my life easier. That meant dicing up my mire poix, dry brining my turkey, making my compound butter, and cutting up bread for stuffing. My sisters both gathered around like I was doing magic, when I was just peeling vegetables. They continued looking on amazed as I chopped vegetables so easily and at times without looking. It might be stupid but it really does make me feel special. It's not that my sisters are bad cooks, I think it's just the fact that I'm going to school for cooking they think I have some more efficient way of doing simple things. Which I totally do.   "Lizzy are you sure you don't need any help?" Selena looked at me worried. I put down my knife and shook the aches out of my hand. "Yeah yeah I got it. You know me, I like doing it all." "Mm well if you say so. We can help too.." "I know I know, and I will need some help in the next couple days and maybe using you guys' ovens." "Jesus Liz what's all being made?" "Top secret!" Both Selena and Natalie rolled their eyes while I rubbed my hands together smiling devilishly. "Though if you really are set on helping these are some recipes you guys can do, and I made them as easy as possible." "Are you calling us stupid?! I HAVE A MASTERS DEGREE ELIZABETH!" Selena said faking getting mad. I rolled my eyes and went back to my cutting board. -Thursday- It's the big day and everything needs to go as planned or else I might kill somebody. I'm usually more go with the flow and easy going, but when it comes to cooking there is only one way to do things and it's my way. I was up around 5 am to start slow cooking some of the bigger proteins like the turkey and beef wellington I prepped the night before. Before putting the turkey into the oven I massaged the smoked garlic compoud butter underneath the skin. It's not the nicet feeling thing to do, but it makes a whole hell of a lot of difference down the line. I was still a bit sleepy, so I turned on the tv to wake me up a little. I flipped through the literal hundred of channels trying to find anything, but nothing was on. I turned on my newest favorite podcast and listened to "dead meat with James and Chelsea". I'm the only one of my family who is a huge horror movie buff. The only person I can get to go with me is Nathan, but he's not a addict like I am. Mom came down about an hour and a half after I did. "The only day I can expect you up this early." Mom laughed. "Well what can I say I love you all that much." I flashed a big smile to her. "Mm well happy thanksgiving my little head chef." She kissed the top of my head before going to get a cup of coffee. Nathan dropped by first around eight, and like the caring brother he is, he brought me breakfast. "Special delivery." He smirked handing me a bag of donuts. "Thanks brother!" I stuffed one in my mouth while giving him a hug. "Dinners gonna be ready about 4!" "Alright I'll have the girls all dressed and ready to see what you've come up with this year." "ITS FINNA BE LIT!" I smiled jumping up and down. "Right right..lit." Nathan not the one for today's slang terms. "Soph is making pies by the way!" Nathan said walking out the door. "Oh sweet! I knew I could trust one of you." -11 am- I was starting to get a little tired, but it wasn't anything I wasn't used to. I opened the fridge for the perfect remedy of an energy drink. I'd changed from my morning pajamas to a pair of jeans and my chef's coat to really feel the part. "Just like your father." Aunt Camryn said from behind me. I practically spit all over the fridge. "JESUS CHRIST." I put my hand over my chest. "I didn't hear anyone come in! My hearts like racing now." "Mm well thats from your lil energy nonsense. Drink coffee like an adult." "HUMPH. No coffees gross." "Peasant." Aunt Camryn muttered sipping her coffee. I turned my attention to the stove where I had potatoes, pasta, and stuffing working. Aunt Camryn peeked over my shoulder to see what I was working with, but I shielded her off. "No peeking!"  I practically shrieked as aunt Camryn took a step back. "Good lord Elizabeth you're not re-inventing the wheel here." "This is the one time I get to show out and I want to surprise. So please shoo." I even gave her a little hand wave motion.  Aunt Camryn looked like she was about to smack the life out of me. Mom walked in probably saving my face. "Nicole! She just told me to shoo!" She couldn't believe my audacity. "Haha c'mon Camryn leave Elizabeth to do her thing. You good here sweetie?" "Yeah I got it mom." She winked at me before guiding aunt Camryn into the other room. Selena walked in carrying trays of appetizers to appease guests while I finished cooking. "Well how's it coming along baby chef?" Selena smiled giving me a hug. "Everythings on schedule for 4 pm dinner." "Awesome, well I brought something special for you sincey you're being so great." She rummaged through the bags and pulled out a bowl of macaroni and cheese. It's my ultimate comfort food, and Selena would always make it for me when she would babysit. "YESS!" I ripped off the saran wrap and dug right in. I forgot I even had a hunger need until the first bite hit. "See not the only one who can cook. I also made more for dinner later for an extra side." "See you're helping!" I said like I was talking to one of her boys.   "Funny." Selena looked at me arms crossed. I got up and gave her another hug and kiss as a thank you. Although I didn't wipe my mouth enough so Selena had bits of cheese on her. "*sigh I expect things like this from my kids, not my adult sister." She pulled out wipes for her face.   "Oh! I have stuffing in that tray that needs to be finished off, can you do it in your oven please?" "Yeah sure, anything else?" I took a minute to run through the list in my head. "There's a tray of biscuits that need to be baked there. They're all portioned out, just put them in at 375, and brush the butter on top when they're done." "YES CHEF!" Selena saluted to me smiling. "Damn right yes chef!" "Okay we'll be back around 3." I pulled the turkey and beef at the same time to let them rest. The smell was absolutely intoxicating, roasted garlic, lemon, parsley, and bacon. It all was coming out the way in envisioned it. Mom helped me get all the serving plates while dad and uncle Logan set the table. Aunt Camryn "supervised" along with her glass of wine. My siblings all began to arrive with their families, so I stood at the door awaiting my tolls from the kids. "Happy thanksgiving auntie Liz here this is for you!" Daisy smiled happy as always. She hugged me tight and handed me a card she made of her handprint drawn into a turkey. "Thank you Daisy!" I squeezed her tight before moving onto the next in line. "What you got for me Julian?" I smiled down at him. He didn't say anything at first going straight into the hug. "Love you auntie Liz." AJ and Cole were next. "I wonder which of you loves me more..?" I said twiddling my thumbs. They shoved their way into my arms hugging as tight as they could. "Aha okay okay I see you both love me a lot." They laughed letting go. I looked at the table with the all the food I'd prepared along with sides prepared by everyone else, and marveled at it all. When everyone finally got a look at it they did as I did and were in awe of it. Along with the two stars of the show there was grilled asparagus, roasted brussel sprouts with pancetta, butter poached shrimp, pumpkin risotto, roasted acorn squash, mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, stuffing, baked macaroni and cheese with a parmesan crust, and garden salad. The smells mixed together in the dining room and I could see everyone starting to salivate just a little at the sight. The dessert table looked just as amazing with the contributions of my sister-in-laws and siblings. "Elizabeth this looks so good. You did a great job." Selena putting her hands over my shoulders. "Yeah good job Liz it smells incredible." Nathan said looking over all the choices spread across the table. "I can't believe you did this on your own.." Natalie smiled. They all surrounded me in a big group hug before  we all joined hands. Dad looked to me and nodded. "Thank you god for bringing us all together and allowing me to show my family just how much they mean to me with a skill you've blessed me with. We give thanks for all the food we're about to have and pray for a good end to the coming year. Amen." "Amen." Everyone collectively answered back. Mom handed me my carving knife and I made the first cut into serving everyone. When everyone had a full plate we took our seats around the house. I plated up last and sat at the table between Sophia and Selena. "I'm so glad I've got my stretchy jeans on Liz. Cause definitely going back for more." Selena smiled eating. As dinner went on everyone would walk by and drop compliments to me and say thank you. It's what made it all worth it. Everyone seeing what I could do, and being recognized for it. I didn't care that my legs hurt from standing all day, my fingers had blisters from the knives, or I was tired beyond belief. Knowing that everyone enjoyed it so much made it worth going through. The kids dropped by me again to say thank you before starting dessert. "You did real good hon." Dad said kissing the top of my head as he walked towards the sink. "We'll all get the dishes sweetie. Take a break finally." Mom nudged me over to the recliner. "Yes will definitely do that." I collapsed into the chair, putting my feet up. The pain in my legs slowly subsiding while my body began to relax. I didn't move for a good twenty minutes before Selena walked by with two plates of pecan pie slices for the both of us. She handed one to me and we cheers'd our forks. I wasn't a pie person growing up, but they've grown on me. After dessert hit me everyone began contemplating the next step. My siblings finished off the dishes, and the kids were all starting to look sleepy. I cracked open another energy drink and split it with Selena. "So are we doing this?" Natalie asked eagerly. "Can you watch the kids?" Selena turned to mom. "We'll just put them to bed. We won't be gone more than a few hours." "Aw man guys go without me you know I hate it." Nathan waved off. "BABE! No way you gotta we can get a new tv." Sophia nudged him. Nathan's eye's lit up. "Yeah the kids can just sleep here while you're out. Oh
