I started reading fanfiction on Wattpad, I started reading fanfiction on ff.net, on AO3, LISTEN I started reading fanfiction on YouTube! The first fic I ever saw was an origin story for Celestia, Luna, and Discord where their parents all died at war!
The next site I found was DeviantArt, the first fanfic I read that was written out on an actual website was a my little pony gore fic, and for a years, YEARS I read EXCLUSIVELY DeviantArt!
I didn’t leave DeviantArt until I found fimfiction.net, and then I went far too deep in the MLP ship war trenches, I was an 11 and I would have fist fought anyone if they said that Dislestia was better than Fluttercord.
fanfiction.net was not a thought in my head until the she-ra fandom, and Wattpad was where I read questionable things in Hazbin Hotel fanfics. I didn’t get on AO3 until I was a Junior in High school!
I don’t read poorly written fanfics in larger fandoms because I’m looking for specific tropes, I read them because my standards for what I read are based on YouTube fanfics, you guys all have your fanfic standards on the floor, well mine are buried in a cave 10 miles underground, you guys all learned to be picky, well I learned that as long as it doesn’t have untagged incest or forced Cannibalism that I could power through it for content!

Fun questions for anti antis that are into fanfics!
What was your first introduction to fanfiction and if you remember what was the first fic you reaf? :D
My first one was when I was 12 I think looking at Meta Knight fan art on DA and found a post with a link to fanfiction.net with a story!
The story was cool from what I remembered XD it was based off of the anime which I was super into at the time! It had these dark moments too that just shook me tho like I was s h o o k!
I thought fanfiction was cool and chilled out on the site (at the time I mainly read Kirby sonic mlp and Mario fics XD)
(I remember this wild one that I can't find anymore sob)

My fic history
Here’s a little about me.
I first came across fanfiction when I was a junior in High School. I made some poorly written TDI fics back then. They’re deleted now so sorry if anyone wanted to see them.
I was in special ed and they had this one cornered off room from the rest of the classroom. You could kind of see the person but not the computer screen much since it was a small 2 computer and 2 chair space. We were allowed to take turns playing or doing homework on it. One computer never really worked much so usually it was a place for just one person and a friend if they wanted to join you. I discovered some adult fanfiction site that I don’t think is around anymore but to log in you had to put in some random year to confirm you were 18+. Poor security honestly. It was just really trashy and badly written adult fics. Since it was just words and no adult images or ads were on it anyone looking in probably thought I was just reading some teen article.
I read and looked at fan art on fanfiction.net and Deviantart.com. I don’t use the latter anymore. I used wattpad later on but I again really don’t use that much anymore. After I graduated high school in 2010 I didn’t really write anything again for a long time. I was and still slightly am into 2010s MLP and read fanfics of it on FIMfanfiction.net. Only wrote 3 fics in that fandom and only proud of 1. When I found Ao3 a while back I made an account and got back in the groove. My first fic on there is an Oumeno fic(Kokichi/Himiko of Danganronpa V3).

@charlataninre-d you MAY bc i LOVE to talk abt it!!!
first let us have a long story to contextualize everything:
basically, aside from my summer in the mlp fandom (which is kind of its own thing online), i entered fandom via anime n manga, w/my introduction to fanfiction itself (again, aside from fimfiction.net) being through my friend nat. since she got into fanfiction via pokemon and the serebii forums, she brought me to fanfiction.net in february 2016, as it was basically the only fanfiction site she knew of at the time.
bc i was just starting to be active on fandom tumblr at the time (this blog was born in april 2016!! :D), i saw a lot of people in the snk fandom talking abt how they were migrating away from ffn to ao3, which was my first introduction to the fact that there were other fanfiction archives on the internet aside from ffn.
i think i noticed that some anime fandoms that were small on ffn were surprisingly big on ao3 and vice versa (haikyuu!! in particular comes to mind), but i didn't think much of it, since i felt i either got equal or greater feedback n viewership on ffn compared to ao3, until the tumblr porn ban happened in december 2018, n i started seeing a bunch of fandom history posts on my dash talking abt how this is basically a cycle that goes all the way back to livejournal and strikethrough blahblahblah and this is why ao3 exists at all.
this basically got me interested in fandom history as a subject, which i have basically committed to ever since as like, hobby study. kept on seeing people say that animanga/video game/asian source material fandoms have historically been underrepresented on ao3 bc it was founded by a group of friends who mostly hung out in western media fandom spaces (star trek, stargate, harry potter, etc).
this lined up pretty well w/the experiences of myself n a lot of my friends who joined fandom via anime/manga/video games at around that time frame, which made me curious abt when exactly the animanga/video game fandom sphere started shifting from ffn to ao3. so i picked some fandoms (at the time, just naruto, hetalia, snk, and bnha), opened up ye olde wayback machine, and started writing down how many fics each fandom had on the different sites at comparable points in time.
you can kind of see how this has been turning out from the data i collected at the time (which is labelled as "old" bc i realized in order to most accurately compare site growth, i needed to have consistent dates between fandoms n websites, which i didn't pay much attention to when first doing this):
(these graphs just show the total number of fics archived to ffn vs. ao3 for naruto, hetalia, and snk: fandoms born in 2001, 2009, and 2013, respectively)
(this screenshot is of my spreadsheet page for supernatural, which i find relevant to the study for obvious reasons. the yellow cells represent dates which were not present on the wayback machine for that date and thus had to be estimated using the surrounding data. the green cells are just there to remind me to correct the formulas there lol)
from the raw data of "how many fics are archived to this particular site", i then take down the total number of existent fics (assuming no/insignificant crossposting) and figure out stuff like the rate (in fics/month) at which fics are being posted to each site, the % of total fics archived to each particular site, and of the total increase of fics, what % went to which site, if that makes sense.
however, i also realized that although i could now pinpoint around when fandoms started posting more to ao3 than to ffn, these dates were all abt the animanga fandom sphere, and i'd have to gather a bunch of the same data for western tv shows, the fandoms ao3 initially blew up on, so that i could get a practical sense of how much later their shifts were.
along the way, i also got curious abt which fandoms in particular basically bridged the gap btwn ffn and ao3 for animanga (the current theory is that it was haikyuu!!, which made me very upset at the time bc i had chosen on purpose not to include it at first bc i didn't care abt it <3), so using my own vague knowledge n experience of Being In Fandom(tm) i started picking fandoms to also track via the wayback machine, and by this point it's basically "in for a penny, in for a pound" LOL
*opens up spreadsheet project*
*takes a deep breath*
oh boy here we go
#long post#replies#charlataninre-d#even if hq wasn't the culprit in particular here then the data strongly suggests that it was a sports anime#kpop n bts are also going to be under careful investigation later to see if they're provably at fault for the rise of chatfics#and also bc kpop in general has a pretty big fanfic archive in asianfanfics.com!! and i'm like 'ooo another site to harvest data from!!'#mlp is on my list of fandoms to consider Specifically bc i feel like fimfiction.net is like#the last great independent fanfiction archive; it STILL hosts the vast majority of mlp fic!!#and as basically my fanfiction cradle it has given me a frame of reference aside from ffn to view ao3 as an archive#and the features they have (PLEASE AO3 I JUST WANT TO ADD 'ON HIATUS' AND 'CANCELLED' STATUSES TO FICS ALONGSIDE 'COMPLETE' AND 'WIP')#another big reason i started doing this was bc i suspect that the snk fandom had a period in its life where fics were being#deleted at around the same rate as new ones were being posted by nature of the... Discourse(tm) surrounding it#and the fact that it was Huge as a starter anime back in like 2013/2014#i've been thinking of including sao in my data for similar reasons (popular starter anime in the early 2010s)#bc by the time we get to bnha which got animated in 2016 it's like. well abt 75% of the fandom is on ao3 now#this is also speculation but i think that m/f writers also stayed on ffn longer bc they were less likely to be purged#you know how it is with yaoi.

Copied from @andalite-angel post. Edited slightly.
A - Ships that you currently like a lot. (They don’t have to be OTPs because not everyone has OTPs.) Friendships, pairings, etc. are allowed.
Biospecialist, Marco/Rachel, Sam/Rahne, all cannon Disney Princess pairings, the two young kids Pacific Rim Uprising, Lancitty, Evo Kurt/ Amanda, Jott in Evo. Skyward??
B - A pairing–platonic, romantic or ***** that you initially didn’t consider, but someone changed your mind.
Fanfic writers and Evo romy, adult Jubilee x Gambit, others.
C - A ship you have never liked and probably never will.
Never gonna be big on Evo Romy ever again, will forever hate Rahne x Roberto, Sam and Rahne with anyone but each other!!
D - A pairing you wish you liked but just can’t.
Evo Romy...somtimes. Because it does sorta make sense IN FANNON, but not in cannon. And Jean x Scott, because it’s so iconic, but I only like them in Evo, so...yah.
E - Have you added anything cracky crazy/hilarious to your fandom? If so, what?
See my fan fiction.
F - What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom?
The Little Mermaid and Star Trek have been there for 95% of my life.
G - Have you ever had an OTP? If so, do you remember your first one? Who was in it?
Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask, Sam/Rahne, Ariel and Eric (first when I was 5, even though I wanted to be Ariel), Rachel Tobias (first when I was actually gettin into fandom), Jake/Cassie (Animorphs), Clark/Lana, Clark/Lois (I think??) and Chloe/Ollie, Romy (even in Evo at a point!), and now Eliza and Goliath in Gargoyles. I keep saying I’m not a shipper, but I think I’m just a subtle one that pines and doesn’t read a lot of fanfic, but my heart swells over seeing my OTP on screen
H - What is your favorite source text for fandom stuff (e.g., TV shows, movies, books, anime, Western animation, etc.)?
TV Shows and Western (superhero) Animation mostly, but also a few animes.
I - Has Tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?
I was annoyed by the Agents Of Shield fandoms behavior for a while, but I’ve never stopped liking any fandoms because of Tumblr.
J - Name a fandom you didn’t think about until you saw it all over Tumblr. (You don’t have to care about it or follow it; it just has to be something that Tumblr made you aware of.)
SuperWhoLock, Riverdale...some other popular teen shows.
K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?
Tie between Sailor Moon and Gambit I guess, but I’m sure there are lots of others. Sailor Jupiter has a good arc as well, even though she doesn’t have a lot of character development TBH.
L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves. (Characters you’re neutral about are fair game, as are characters you merely dislike. Characters that you absolutely loathe with the fire of ten thousand suns are exempt, as there is no point in giving yourself an aneurysm over a character that you hate.)
Roberto Dacosta’s super strength power is pretty cool and he’s a chill guy. And rich. (I just realized that a lot of X-Men characters are rich, actually. Gambit, Xavier, Warren and him. Holy crap.)
M - Name a character that you’d like to have for a friend.
Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Moon. TAS Rogue too, because she seems fun to hang with, and who wouldn’t like to be called “Sugah” all the time?
N - Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).
MORE GAMBIT (and comic Nightcrawler) IMAGINES!! And just more love and less fan wars across all fandoms, really.
O - Choose a song at random. Which ship or character does it remind you of?
Hero by Chad Kroger. Ship: Romy or Mollyx Remy. Character: Gambit or Angel.
P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas).
For any fandom? A mad scientist and a famous baker get together after the scientist contacts aliens, resulting in a warring invasion on earth.
Q - A fandom you’ve abandoned and why.
To be perfectly honest, The Smurfs because we’re a Christain household and we found it had stuff in it we didn’t agree with. I was three. Other than that, I’ve only given up one other fandom permenantly that wasn’t what I thought it was and chosen at a bad time.
R - Which friendship/platonic relationship is your favorite in fandom?
Kurt and Kitty in Evo, and Logan and Kurt is cool, but I don’t actually pay much attention to it.
S - Show us an example of your personal headcanon (prompts optional but encouraged)
Hmmm. One that isn’t too boring? Remy isn’t (wasn’t? He is married now) particular about a woman’s height and is comfortable enough with himself to date a woman much taller or shorter than he is. (Remember, Frenzy was freaking 6′7 before she got rebooted to a normal height and it was implied they had history.) For a while it was a wish of mine they’d pair him with a short gal, because all X-women are physically clones of each other, minus Rahne, Kitty and Jubilee. Blargh. Oooh, just had an idea for a new art project to make the girls look individual! ^_^
T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?
Besides the above? Uh...headcannon that Remy smells good and his hair is silky to the touch and yes I’m a sick, weird little person, I know. Haha, not really. I’m not much of a headcannon person.
U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.
* Gambit: Hot, suave, lit, accent, good cook, romantic, my fictional ideal man (told you, I’m sick and weird). * Sailor Jupiter: Sweet, loyal, living on her own at bloody 14 years old, strong physically and emotionally, had trouble believing/finding her feminity like me, tall (not like me!), brunette character, thunder powers. * Tuvok (Star Trek): My second crush ever, calm, reflective, hot grandpa, sarcasm galore, strong, suffers emotionally and physically, POC and like the only black vulcan that I know of, cute little boy chest, that butt (XD), frakin’ hot.
V - Which character do you relate to most?
Surprisingly, one I haven’t talked about yet and that I’m not really fandom-y about. Rapunzel from Tangled. When I saw the movie, I was attached to her immediately. I’d grown up homeschooled and at that point I’d been caregiving for one of my parents for six years at that point, unable to move out and get married and have much of a life, so I was always metaphorically in a tower too. I have childish interests, am artistic and creative, have done LOTS of self-insert art like her, and am a generally happy person (even if I don’t always show it and don’t smile enough). So, out of every character in my many fandoms, I relate to Rapunzel the most. Also, I have only 2 things of Tangled merch-the movie, the soundtrack, and a gorgeous bedspread that’s actually based on the show, but doesn’t look like it. (I don’t like it’s animation/character designs, so it’s been hard to get into it.)
W - A trope which you are virtually certain to hate in any fandom.
OMG, do we have to go here? Anything over-sexualized or kinky or just plain gross/weird. (v***, gore, ect.) There’s this one X-Men:Evo artist on DA that would be brilliant, but I can’t stomach their gallery because they feel the need to do a few v*** and bondage pics amongst otherwise G-rated pictures. *throws up* IT’S A SHOW FOR 7-YEAR OLDS!!
X - A trope which you are almost certain to love in any fandom.
Huge guy, Tiny girl! (but it looks...weird...in live action. *Good Luck Charlie flashbacks*.) Also age differences. Some people are put off by Usagi and Mamo’s age difference in Classic, but I think it’s cute and they were really chaste about it. Specifically, I liked the part where he told her to do well in school for some reason.
Y - What are your secondhand fandoms (i.e., fandoms you aren’t in personally but are tangentially familiar with because your friends/people on your dash are in them)? Holy crap, Pride and Prejudice and Anne of Green Gables. No one on my dash is into them though, it’s a real life thing. Long story.
Z - Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go! (Prompts optional but encouraged.)
I have written more self-inserts than is probably healthy, but at least I’ve mostly gotten past my teenage phase of thinking anime guys are hot and it’s extended to Gambit as well. I’d much rather see him be portrayed by a living, breathing actor semi-bringing my fantasies to life than as a drawn character. Well, not that I’m not happy seeing him animated and his voice in Evo is still super hot, but that’s another thing. Anyway, on that note, I wish XM:E weren’t a dead fandom and I could get more reviews instead of just faves/follows. I get so frustrated, because I’m not writing my fics for myself, I’m writing them to finish the story and for the fans. I know OCs/SI aren’t everyones bread and butter, but when you work hard on something, you want people to enjoy and appreciate it on it’s own merits. My regulars dropped off the planet and the fandom is just not that active online. (It’s still kind of active though, otherwise the Gambit and other prints on Steven Gordon’s online store wouldn’t have sold out so fast.) I wish it had been as creative as the MLP fandom, but even that wouldn’t have saved it. Thankfully, there are a few people “keeping the faith”, like Coldfusion180 and some others. They haven’t abandoned it and people have made AMVs for it in recent years, long after the shows cancellation. I know we’ve all moved on in one way or another, but it’s still nice to see the love for the show and it’s characters going strong, even if we’re now a niche fandom, tiny, but there. And even if I don’t get another single review up until the last in the series, at least I can say I finished it, if nothing else. Even if your fandom is dead, keep supporting it. If we don’t keep the characters alive, they die and are forgotten. They need us.

cleverlittlepenguin said: Aghh I have been wondering the same since I started to read ao3 fics… it seems like every fandom has those kind of fics?! (also yes why would anyone say ao3 has better quality in general? So much dubious content there, I find it even harder there to search for good fics than on fanfiction.net)
--
True. And there’s generally less fics there anyway. I think it got the reputation of being ‘better’ somehow because you had to be invited unlike ff.net plus there are less boundaries on what you can write (even... kind of creepy stuff).
Thing is just because a previously invited and decent writer the site itself invited in the early days invites their friends/relatives doesn’t mean they’ll be any good at writing.
And then of course they’re able to invite people too.
And then when you invite fandom friends you probably end up inviting people with the same weird kinks as you. So maybe it was just a random chance that it happened to be that one.
There’s also a site dedicated entirely to mlp with no restrictions and it’s gone of the deep end for creepy fics in other ways apparently.
As for it being harder to find good fics maybe it’s because of how the filters are structured but it may even be because of the restrictions on ff.net (as well as there being more people) That more good fics are found by you on ff.net instead.
Sometimes boundaries are good in writing and more of a help then a hindrance for budding writers. I mean it’s kind of half why you can probably list a hell of a lot more good cartoons aimed for children which happen to appeal to adults too compared to adult cartoons honestly. (Which don’t even try half the time. They just throw anything on the screen because they can whereas kid shows often have to think things through if they want to be appealing).
Not that there aren’t garbage just for kids shows too but that’s just my theory.
