Kirby Series Retrospective Thoughts
I am all done! Well, mostly anyways, but we will talk about that. I beat all the mainline Kirby games from Dream Land to Robobot, so first lets rank those:
Super Star (Ultra) - Played this one as a kid and it holds up. Pitch perfect balance of everything. Great copy abilities, multiple moves per ability, local coop, lots of modes. I had the most fun playing this one and it almost felt like every other game was good or bad based on its proximity to Super Star. Kirby feels his best here.
Triple Deluxe - Maybe it was because I had such low expectations, but I was blown away by this title. I really enjoyed the variety of gameplay gimmicks and the use of 3D, plus the new powers.
Planet Robobot - Honestly this game felt like DLC for Triple Deluxe with a downgraded framerate once you get past the robot gimmick, which is better than Hypernova but doesn't make the game for me. I almost hesitate to even rank these games separately but I definitely had more fun playing Triple Deluxe
Squeak Squad - I did really have a hard time putting this game down and it is highly underrated to me, if lacking a bit of its own identity.
Return to Dream Land - Again, a little on the generic side, but felt like a nice evolution of what Squeak Squad established with having lots of levels with optional collectibles. Funny though that Squeak Squad mastered having fun unlockable tied to collectibles and no other game managed to recapture that exactly. World 6 slaps. A bit generic,
Nightmare in Dream Land (Adventure) - Frustrating only having 1 move per copy ability, but makes sense with it being a remake of the original. Still a pretty fun time all things considered.
64: The Cystal Shards - I don't like the way Kirby feels to move and fight in this game but the ability mixing is very fun, even if I settled on beating the game using Darth Maul's lightsaber exclusively (which was a lot of fun)
Dream Land - Honestly surprisingly fun and "Kirby feeling" despite the lack of copy abilities, just a bit on the short side of course.
Dream Land 3 - Hated this one. I didn't like the level design. I didn't like the "pick a friend and hope it was the right one" system of forcing you to replay levels arbitrarily. Felt like a step backwards from the gameplay and variety of Super Star. Likely would've enjoyed more if I had only played Dream Land 1/2 beforehand. Did not finish. Cute art style. Hated how Glooey steals your health only to never do anything useful. I don't enjoy the concept of mixing powers and friends because it feels more like playing optimally is the normal experience and picking wrong is both random and punishing.
Dream Land 2 - I did beat the main game (not the secret boss), but it was rough and I had to turn on invincibility to power through. It simply isn't fun to me. I do not like the friend system. Rick makes me fall in bottomless pits. Kine is slow and cumbersome out of water. The bird slaps though. Only a handful of copy abilities and most of them suck, even if you do get four different version of each ability. The level design feels monotonous and straightforward. Feels distinctly less "Kirby" even than Dream Land 1.
Amazing Mirror - My absolute least favorite, I could only get about an hour in before calling it quits. A baffling game. The level design seems to be designed intentionally screwy to force you to play multiplayer and split up. Everyone calls this a "metroidvania" but every other Metroidvania in the world gives you permanent upgrades and doesn't end you back to the hub world for picking the wrong door. Imagine if Hollow Knight just killed you for taking the left door instead of the right door, and that is how this game felt for me to play. It's not even necessarily that I just "dislike" this game, I don't see it as a genuinely playable game in single player. I must have been missing something because I cannot imagine anyone being interested in seeing Kirby turned into a life or death Monty Hall problem over and over and over. Missile is a fun copy ability though. If you are an Amazing Mirror fan, then please see this as me experiencing a "disconnect" with this game rather than an attack on your interests.
All in all, I really enjoyed the Kirby series. It was a lot easier and more nostalgic than doing the Mega Man series, although I learned a lot more there. Also, it is shocking how many Kirby "spinoffs" there are. At this point, the main series almost feels like the spinoff itself.
Also, very scary how Dream Land, Dream Land 2 (even if I hate it lol), Amazing Mirror, Nightmare in Dream Land, Squeak Squad, Canvas Curse, Mass Attack, Epic Yarn, Triple Deluxe, original Return to Drema Land, Robobot, Rainbow Curse, plus the many 3DS spinoff eshop games are about to die in just a month! And some of those eshop games are literally digital only, like Blowout Blast. Huge blow to games conservation when the 3DS/Wii U eshops go down :( thank god for so-called "pirates". Imagine if someone had rescued materials from the Library of Alexandria or the Hollywood fire and been branded a thief. Obviously playing video games for free and preserving important historical documents aren't equally noble, but it genuinely scares me to think about how fleeting my favorite art form is.
So what next? My next series is most likely going to be No More Heroes since I can play the two Wii originals on my Wii U natively and I actually own the third game on Switch and have been meaning to play it, and the games aren't too long.
First, I am still wrapping up Kirby, to be fair. I may do Meta Knightmare and similar modes in Super Star, Triple Deluxe, Robobot, Return to Dream Land, etc.
I could play any of the spinoffs, which Blowout Blast seems to be the most appetizing of, but I could also sink some time into Air Ride (I actually hadn't booted it up yet as part of this operation since I am already fairly familiar)
But also in between series, I want to read some comic books and do some twitch streams with my new PC. Fake Fan Alex is my twitch and youtube handle, shameless plug.
Also! I am going to try the Switch demos splitscreen to determine if any of them warrant immediate purchase, or if I want to wait for a steeper discount, which could be a fun way of waiting to determine when my second Kirby phase will be.

Here's a big dump of photos I just took with my plushies as some fun stuff for y'all to look at.
Kirby probably encounters waddle dees and waddle doos every day in Dream Land, yeah?
Kirby and Gooey good buddies pic
Dreamland 2 Gang
Dreamland 3 Gang (attempting to match the title screen's positions)
They're fighting over who gets to be with Kirby for the time being!
Marx and Magolor pic! The pranksters. Marxolor fuel if you do that.
Obligatory wave 3 pic!
Susie and Taranza! Taransusie fuel if you do that.
What are... what are they doing? Might they be plotting to kidnap them again, but this time for kicks and giggles? As a coordinated team?
Have some Meta and Dedede btw
"Hey guys I'm sorry about what I did back then! I would actually like to be a friend for real now. I'll build an amusement park to further prove I'm a friend!"
Triple Deluxe team
Planet Robobot team
Woah... wut they doing? Are they all planning a prank on Kirby or they all gonna pleasantly surprise him because they all love him now?
Wave 1 gang
Marx and Gooey buds. He's contemplating about using him as another beach ball.
But Nago simultaneously wants to use Gooey like a ball! They argue about who gets to play with the blue boi.
Bird solidarity
Pink gal fun. The only girls in my plush collection, by the way, LOL
Basically Forgotten Land here. Kirby and Elfilin save a kidnapped waddle dee
Real talk I think Elfilin would fit in well with the animal friends. They could accept him as one of their own. (ignore the fact that the sizes are obviously off and elfilin would clearly be smaller than them except for pitch maybe)
Also real talk I think Elfilin and Gooey deserve to be buddies. Both came from bad origins but are good themselves now. Gooey could help Elfilin be a more chill person.
A gang of Kumazaki era characters lol
Which inter-dimensional traveler do you like more, Kirby?!?!?
Kracko confronts Kirby yet again because Kracko is Kirby's biggest hater. A waddle doo spectates because Kracko spawned him.
Marx and Magolor make fun of Kracko for hating Kirby so much. Kracko can clearly hear them and is considering to electrocute them on the spot.
Kracko angrily yells at all these guys (and gal in Susie's case) for having fought Kirby before and are all friends with him while he is not. Jealousy much? Why can't Kracko just be Kirby's friend now? He don't wanna though LOL
Anyways that's it! Hope you enjoy all this eye candy of photos
A few months, I posted my Kirby character plush collection. I've gotten some more since then. DL3 animal trio, Elfilin and Kracko are added.
Here's the updated collection! And I think I'm satisfied with this for the current moment. Might I get more? Maybe. But I'm not concerned with that right now and probably wouldn't be for a long time.
Here's my wonderful Kirby collection of a whopping 18 plushies!

So when playing Kirby and the Forgotten Land, I wasn’t allowed to make it out of the first world because I needed to collect Waddle Dees. It was at this moment where I realized that based on how much I didn’t care for the mandatory completion of Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot, and seeing as Forgotten Land plays almost exactly like Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot but in 3D, I wasn’t going to like the rest of the game and have never gone back to it since. I still can’t believe a Kirby game managed to make me HATE waddle dees, but here we are. The worst part is that if I didn’t avoid spoilers like the plague, I would have known this game wasn’t for me and didn’t waste my money.
I also realized why I enjoy games like Nightmare in Dreamland, Super Star, Return to Dreamland, and Star Allies and don’t care for games like Dreamland 2, Dreamland 3, Triple Deluxe, and Forgotten Land. The first four games I would classify as “kinetic”, all about moving forward, overcoming obstacles, killing enemies, and having a speedrun factor, almost like a classic Sonic game. The last four games of the list are what I consider “mandatory completion”, always worrying about missing something hidden only to not be allowed to backtrack, bringing specific abilities from other levels that go against the level design, not being allowed to retry a puzzle/minigame, all of which if you decide not to do, you will not be allowed either to fight the final boss to make it out of the world you are currently in.
I’m sorry, but I personally believe kinetic Kirby games are infinitely more fun than mandatory completion Kirby games. Kinetic games have constant action and satisfaction, but mandatory completion games have constant worrying and relief from monotony when progressing. I’m also shocked that nobody in the Kirby fanbase complains about mandatory completion unless it’s Dreamland 3. Perhaps I’m in a very slim minority and the majority of Kirby fans prefer the mandatory completion style.
It’s not like kinetic Kirby don’t have anything to do for completionists. Nightmare in Dreamland has the switches to find, Super Star has the treasure chests and copy essences, Return to Dreamland has the energy spheres, and Star Allies has both switches to find and rainbow puzzle pieces to collect. Mandatory completion Kirby games on the other hand are extremely unengaging, bland, and boring for minimalists/speedrunners, meaning it’s not fun to complete them, but it’s also not fun to “finish” them. Kinetic Kirby games appeal to both minimalists and completionists, whereas mandatory completion Kirby games only appeal to maybe completionists.
And then there are some strange in-betweens. Kirby 64 on the surface is a mandatory completion Kirby game, but there is a secret code that collects everything for you, allowing you to play the game in a kinetic way. In Kirby Squeak Squad, only 5 of the 120 treasure chests are required to finish the game, and collecting the large chests (all five mandatory chests are large btw) emphasize kinetic gameplay by making you go fast to collect them.
I still believe a completion-based Kirby game can work. It just has to be designed no longer like Super Mario 3D World and instead more like Super Mario 64, where finishing missions and collecting things IS the goal. That way, everything would be designed around the completion tasks, including taking into consideration how fun each task will be since everyone will encounter them and it is now the backbone of the game.
The question now is, which gameplay style of Kirby do you prefer and why?

Kirby Lore: Kirby’s Ultimate Form?
Hey! I’m back, and I’m finally doing another Kirby Lore. However, this one isn’t going to be quite as cut-and-dry as the last ones. Instead of focusing on a single, focused topic and the info surrounding it, I’m posing a question with a less solid answer. Which of Kirby’s abilities is the best? This will also be my first time using picture aides, so I hope you all enjoy.
So, I’m sure we’re all aware of what makes Kirby so overwhelmingly powerful, despite his small stature and squishy body. In short, Kirby is adaptable. He can quickly accustom to any scenario and figure out how to navigate them without much trouble. He usually does this through his trademark copy ability, though there are situations where even the loss of that power failed to slow him down.
However, Kirby’s copy abilities are often his most reliable form of self-preservation, usurping the abilities of his foes and using them for himself. Kirby has many abilities, harnessing elemental powers and mastering unconventional weapons. Listing them all would take forever, and frankly, not illustrate the point I’m trying to make. However, there are copy abilities that are a cut above the rest.
Return to Dreamland gave us Super Abilities; more powerful versions of Kirby’s usual repertoire that specialize in unstoppable destruction. There are five in total, Ultra Sword (pictured above), Flare Beam, Monster Flame, Snow Bowl, and Grand Hammer. Each one is capable of dealing incredible damage, and can even defeat minibosses in a single blow. Super Abilities are certainly a force to be reckoned with, but they have a fatal flaw; they’re all on a timer. Kirby is unable to retain a Super Ability for more than a few minutes at a time, which severely limits their usability. So, Super Abilities aren’t quite the pinnacle we’re looking for. Are there any other copy abilities that meet the task?
Well, there are a few other abilities that have huge destructive capability, but they have a similar drawback. Crash (pictured above), Paint, Cook, Mike, and sometimes Magic can unleash a huge attack for incredible damage, but it expends the ability. Despite Crash’s reputation, its ‘one and done’ nature prevents it from being Kirby’s strongest power. So, it seems like the standard Copy fare is a bust. What else do we have to pull from? Thankfully, Kirby games like to end with some spectacle, equipping Kirby with Final Weapons.
Pictured above is the Star Rod, the ability that kicked-off the concept. At the end of Kirby’s Adventure, Kirby used this weapon to vanquish Nightmare and save Dreamland. From here, many powers made one-off appearances at the end of Kirby’s quests for use against the final boss. Dreamland 2 has the Rainbow Sword, Dreamland 3 had the Love-Love Stick, Crystal Shards had the Ribbon Gun. However, all these different weapons had the same basic ability; destroy the thing that’s in front of you. They don’t tend to have the same damage rate as Super Abilities or one-off-powers, but they’re better than the standard fare and have no time-limits. Amazing Mirror and Squeak Squad even let Kirby use their final weapons, Galaxia and Triple Star anywhere after the final boss is defeated. They seem to be pretty powerful, but we can do better.
This is Hypernova Kirby. Appearing in Kirby Triple Deluxe, this ability is given to Kirby when he eats a Miracle Fruit. It enhances his normal suction ability to ludicrous levels, and in the game’s own words, transforms him into a black hole. Hypernova seems to display the most raw power out of any of Kirby’s abilities. It allows him to inhale anything and everything around him; even creatures many times larger than him are vulnerable. While Super Abilities were shown to destroy minibosses without effort, Hypernova can EAT BOSSES. Kirby can also use this power to reflect massive energy waves that would have destroyed his other forms. So, it seems for all intents and purposes, Hypernova is as powerful as Kirby will ever get. However, I think there’s one power that can surpass it.
Pictured above is the list of Copy Essence Deluxe that Kirby can collect in the Milky Way Wishes subgame in Kirby Super Star. This power is shrouded in ambiguity and never explained, but it’s incredibly interesting. In Milky Way Wishes, Kirby’s usual method of power copying is redacted, and he must instead collect Copy Essence Deluxe to use his powers. However, once he has one, he can transform and use that ability anytime, anywhere, as often as he wants. Kirby’s skills expand greatly with this, no longer relying on his opponents to provide abilities to copy. He can instead switch powers on the fly, going from Sword to Fire to Yo-yo at the drop of a hat ba-dum-tissh. While only 19 abilities are on the list, it may be possible that Copy Essence Deluxe exist for the missing ones. Theoretically, if Kirby totally fills out this list, he could become truly ultimate, using each ability to their fullest potential and switching them mid-fight to gain the upper-hand against any opponent. While it would never match Hypernova in raw damage, the versatility is presents could be what makes Kirby ultimate.
Well, that’s everything I had to say about this topic. I know I left out the Animal Friends, Robobot Armor and Mix Abilities, but I think I covered a good amount of info. What to you think? Which of these powers, if any, is Kirby’s Ultimate Form?

Me talking about Kirby and stuff
(Hey first real post!)
I didn't grow up with Kirby, at least not like some other fans did. I haven't even played all the games in the series. Despite that, I still love the pink puff-ball. Nearly every one of his games (that I've played, at least) have been just plain fun, and I can't thank HAL, Mr. Sakurai, and Nintendo for making this little bundle of joy. So strap in, because I'm about to get to talking about Kirby.
My first time seeing Kirby was when I was little and played Super Smash Bros Brawl for the first time. I didn't know much about him, and honestly I thought he was a Pokémon. But I thought it was awesome that he could absorb enemies and get their abilities. I just wondered where he was from...
The first Kirby game I played was Super Star Ultra on the DS. It was one of the later games I got for it, the 3DS was already out (can't remember if I had one though) and I was in love from the start. All the little games that have their own little differences that somehow changed everything, colorful graphics, and that SOUNDTRACK (every Kirby game has a good soundtrack, saying it here so I don't repeat myself.) Everything about this game blew me away, and I wanted to play more.
So soon after that I got Triple Deluxe, the best name for a 3DS game ever. While it was much shorter than SSU, and surprisingly more difficult, I really enjoyed it. The final boss is also REALLY cool! Not gonna spoil it, but this game is definetly a good time at the very least.
Now for a complete 180, we have these two. I didn't buy Dreamland 1, mostly because I already played the SSU version of it. I bought them off the eshop out of curiosity and, once again, I loved them. 3 really surprised me with how stylistic the game was, especially for a SNES title. They're great, go play them. That's all.
EPIC YARN IT'S SO CUTE JDJXUSNWWMWMSJSIDJSJ
I love this game. Is it easy? Yes, too easy at points. Does the level design stand-out in any way? No, not really. But is it fun? YES! I know it's weird to love a game based mostly on graphics, but I don't care. This game is so freaking cute.
Last but not least we have Star Allies! Yes I skipped Robobot, I'm sorry Kirby fans. Star Allies is... underwhelming. Don't get me wrong, the game is as much fun as the other games. The co-op is really well implemented, the level design is solid, and everything about the graphics (except I guess the frame rate but that doesn't bother me too much) just screams beauty, but I just wish there was more. 4 worlds, just isn't enough, especially with the price tag being $20 more than Triple Deluxe. Again, I love what's there, but I just want more. (Hope that doesn't sound greedy.)
So yeah, I love Kirby. Even if Star Allies was a bit disappointing, I can't help but be excited to see what comes next. So once more, thank you to HAL, Mr. Sakurai, and Nintendo for all the good times. And I'm hoping for many more in the future.

Hey what’s good it’s ya boy Zaggitz here and you know what time it is:
ITS GAME OF THE YEAR 2016 BAYBEE. This has been a pretty messed up year from both a personal and I guess, global perspective, but dang if the games haven’t been good as hell. Here’s ten games I super liked and some fun bonus categories because it’s my list and I DO WHAT I WANT, MOM, STAY OUT OF MY ROOM WHEN I’M MAKING LISTS.
Time I want back award: Dragon Quest 7 (3DS)
This game is technically fine but god it’s slower than a sloth climbing the worlds tallest tree, I could have shaved 30-40 hours off this bad boy and had a much tighter more satisfying experience. I like a good slow paced game when it’s worth it(see my goty) but this very much wasn’t.
Game that would have made the list if I had time award: Owlboy
I’ve been waiting for this game my entire adult life so of course the year it finally comes out is the year my good computer dies a horrible death. Maybe sometime this year I’ll finally play you. :(
BEST NEW CHARACTER/BEST VOICE ACTING/BEST: Duvalie The Swift
Trails of Cold Steel 2′s Duvalie is a fuckin comedy riot. She’s a super villain fangirl who finally gets to work with her idols only to realize they all kind of suck at their jobs and are super nonchalant. She’s constantly furious at the fact that she seems to be the only person in this world taking things as seriously as she does. Easily one of the most likeable villains in years.
Worst at hiding as a random faceless NPC: Duvalie the Swift.
Duvalie what are you doing, this is Trails, where every NPC is named and memorable and you are the only person in this city with no name and the fuckin game even labels you as “suspicious girl” come on who you foolin Duvalie go home ya goofed on this one.
OKAY NOW ITS TIME FOR TEN GOOD GAMES I PLAYED.
Honorable Mention: Ratchet and Clank (Remake)
This game would rate higher if it didn’t neuter the plot and levels of the original in favor of really bad movie tie in stuff. Gameplay-wise though it’s the best one in the series hands down and I can’t wait for them to make the next original R and C game.
10. Salt and Sanctuary
It’s a much better Metroidvania than it is a Dark Souls homage, so I was happy to push past that rough start and start getting some mobility upgrades to enjoy this really cool interconnected hellmaze. Hope they make some DLC for it.
9. Pokemon Moon
Best pokemon since Heart Gold/Soul Silver.
8. Momodora: Reverie under the Moonlight
Just a good, fun hardgame with some great atmosphere and tight controls. Lots of sick rewards for beating bosses without getting hit and it just feels good, I don’t really know how to quantify it. If you like spooky gothic atmospheres and metroidvanias definitely check it out.
7. AM2R
NINE YEARS SINCE PRIME 3. NINE YEARS SINCE THE LAST GOOD METROID GAME. This game rules and I hope it doesn’t take nintendo another 9 years to get their head out of their asses about this franchise so I don’t have to bank on(excellent) fangames.
6. Kirby: Planet Robobot
This game fuckin rules start to finish. There’s never really been a bad Kirby game but this is easily the best one yet right next to triple deluxe and super star ultra.
5. The Witness
One of the coolest puzzle games I’ve ever played. They way it teaches you mechanics is extremely cool and it kind of feels like a metroid game but instead of powerups you learn new rules that help you proceed in areas you couldn’t figure out. Finding my first Environmental puzzle was one of the most awesome OH SHIT moments in a game in recent memory.
4. Dark Souls 3
Souls continues to be great, thought this last game felt a bit too soon after bloodborne, with a buttload of reused assets and aesthetics that really ends up making the game feel like a “Best of FromSoft” compilation than its own game. I still really liked it and am hype for the final DLC.
3. Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE
What a baffling, cool game. It oozes style out of every pore much like what you’d expect from persona, the music is great and a lot of the side stuff is A+++. Some really great memorable characters but the plot is extra generic and I still can’t stand the way Atlus designs dungeons. It also bogs itself down in way too many progression systems and ends up feeling kind of cluttered on the back end.
2. DOOM
I ripped and I tore, it was awesome.
1. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 2
Stellar localization, stellar voice cast, good resolutions to most of my niggling complaints from the first game, about the only real fault i can drop on this game is that there’s a bit too much power creep whenever you fight major villains and that the part with the shrines is a bit overlong. Otherwise a gripping story about civil war with some great sidequests and as always some of the best npcs and world building the genre has to offer. The ending is a game changer of phenomenal proportions and I’m waiting for CS3 (and trails in the sky 3rd!!!) with bated breath. Play these games they are super special and good.

The better games I ended up playing in 2016 because I didn’t have a lot of money Part 1:Nintendo.
Or, budgeting games in 2015 in preparation for 2016 was a good idea. Also, Nintendo did more in 2015.
First up, Kirby: Robobot Planet. While triple deluxe, the last game, felt a little weak, this one is perfect. Good music, looks good. Some lower framerate in 3D so if that makes you sick in 3D don’t use it. It’s actually pretty good and makes me wish the 3DS had more power to pull off 3D games. Kirby’s collection object this time are cubes and they’re generally easy to get. It took until late in the game for me to replay a level to get a couple so it’s not stressful. Kirby is best when it’s not a stressful game. For more skilled people, it’s a relaxing romp through a coloful world. For people new to this style of game, this is a good way to get used to platformers. Kirby has been Nintendo’s “kid’s game” but when looking at the series as a whole, it tends to be games that are for the most part “easy” because they want you to enjoy what’s in it and get better at the game first.
Kirby naps a lot. Kirby is nice. Kirby likes food. He fights King DDD and Meta Knight a lot but they’re all friends. This game is friendly. Enjoy your time with Kirby.
Possible spoilers below because I took my sweet time trying to beat this game and don’t remember when stuff is revealed to you.
Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE. This game is also a JRPG. If Persona 4 is rural Japanese Scooby gang solve murders, this game is magical idols solve missing persons cases. They’re idols in the real Japanese corporate sense of the word if you’re used to that. Entire game revolves around you joining a talent agency style place that’s a front for their alternate world thing. If you played Persona 4 (or P4 golden) this game is a huge visual upgrade over that with carefully considered visuals for the hardware. It’s nice to see developers use graphic design to help a struggling piece of hardware make something look good. If you thought P4′s UI was cool and P5′s makes you ashamed of anything you’ve made, this is the middle step. The game just feels really well made visually and that doesn’t happen a lot of the time. The game really only has performance issues where the later boss fights are just a bunch of huge models on screen. Some awkward animations and weird choices for localisation hurt the game a little but are easy to ignore. My only beef with the localisation is one character does a song in a fantasy universe wedding dress that showed a lot of skin. They decided to hide the parts that expose skin by turning it white, like I guess they were aiming for tights/nylon look but it just... looks weird? The materials there in the battle are just lit wrong or something because it looks weird but okay in some scenes and others it goes between boobs in shiny car paint or painted skin. Could’ve been a late hour edit on NA side of things and we’ll never know. Oh, almost forgot. Battle shouts are not subtitled or translated and no dub. I guess they didn’t have access to a lot of the development team who were probably trying to finish Persona 5.
Getting cool things from Nintendo is sometimes like wishing on the Monkey’s Paw. This is kinda one of those times. This is still a REALLY REALLLY cool adventure though.
Shorter notes:
Pokemon was good this year. Moon isn’t the best at what it does but it is one of the best Pokemon games. Pokken is a good fighting game action wise, but may rely on high level play/mind games for something that could’ve been way more entry level. Optimal 2 player setup at home is having two Wii U on LAN which very few people have and most people do not have access to the updated arcade version. May come to the Switch?
Sega 3D classics collection is a good buy if on sale and you like old arcadey games. I got it for Sonic and Puyo Puyo 2. Lots of options that put most collections to shame, wish it had more gallery items and maybe more games. The 3D is really well done, especially since a lot of the arcade games are ones that simulated 3D with 2D sprite scaling. On Sonic, a lot more work went in than just making sure the layers were rendered correctly. Better than the Arika 3D retro games on 3DS.

Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Thoughts
If I thought Squeak Squad felt like New Super Mario Bros, then this game is NSMB Wii
I mean, 4 players, 2.5D, back to basics
This game’s biggest crime is being generic
This game’s biggest success is expanding all power move sets (and also level design)
The “ultra power” gimmick doesn’t really do enough to set this game apart, but it’s a serviceable mechanic
Possibly best puzzle gameplay yet
Feels like Kirby has finally landed on a modern identity here:
Classic core gameplay with many collectibles
I enjoyed all the sub boss fights and most of the main boss fights
I actually did defeat the final boss despite a couple deaths
I definitely enjoyed this game more alone than previously playing coop
I kind of wish I could go in and replay just the black and white bonus levels on their own in a separate mode
I started to skip the black/white chase sequences just because they’re hard and optional
I like the idea of a recurring boss fight that you have to use different powers on each time
I really enjoyed the penultimate world, the grey sci-fi one
It felt like a sneak peek of Robobot and a culmination of level design and difficulty
For example, I really enjoyed the auto-runner sequences in that world
Lots of powers are drastically better in this game than before, like Spark and Needle
Some great additions to the lineup like Spear and Water
Cutter seemed to be the best for bosses in my experience here (especially the last one, although spark did amazing too)
I appreciate the presence of an extra mode
I didnt get to try the other 3 characters since I was playing solo but I assume they closely line up with sword, spear, and hammer
Dedede looks weird in this game
Why do I lose my extra lives when I save and load my game? :(
Not sure if I really remember any of the music from this game
I just really like the level design philosophy of “hey, hey, I triple dog dare you to keep your power and use it in a specific way” with no result consequences if I fail
One of the best so far, I’d put this slightly under Squeak Squad
Up next: Triple Deluxe! I’ve heard people complain about this game before for being too generic and forgettable. In the metaphor, I’m expecting it to be New Super Mario Bros 2, which is to say that I am expecting it to be Return to Dream Land but shrunk down and with a “gimmick” that doesn’t offer enough identity. However, I played one level and found it quite charming! My only real issue is that it had a very “3DS demo kiosk” feel to it, and I can see the 3D and the Hypernova getting old quickly. Also, I am worried that I will get hung up on not having collectibles to progress. Time will tell!
On deck: Kirby robobot will be the final mainline Kirby game I play! I am not shelling out for the switch games. There are 4 a la carte Kirby minigames for 3DS that I will check out (not doing Kirby clash) and also Rainbow Curse but those are unlikely to be full play throughs.
