Yesterday I had the realization that back in the early-mid 2010s, I had a pretty huge squish on my marching band section leader who I havenât seen regularly in a decade and last saw probably 8 years ago. Itâs like oh so thatâs what was going on.
#no we never really became close#but we hung out in a larger group settings#both of us got the hell out of town once we graduated and never looked back from what I can tell#I hope sheâs doing well#probably wonât ever see her again but thatâs okay#tbh I donât even know if she even wanted to become close friends#I also think a lot of people I knew in high school probably only remember me by my best friend and wouldnât want to associate with me so#because of her#but to be fair#I have kept her at a distance for the past 4 years#which is sad because Iâve also distanced myself from my other best friend from those days as a result and like that was not intended#Erica if you read this itâs not me lol#I doubt she would ever see this though#also why the fuck did it suggest the names of the Columbine shooters when it typed in Ărica#donât do her dirty like that tumblr đđ»

maizuru and milsiril are my favorite fucked up dungeon meshi mother figures
#dungeon meshi#maizuru#milsiril#my post#both were involved in some kind of highly skilled group (espionage/ninja work and the canaries)#maizuru and milsiril both have some aspect that makes their relationship with their sort of son innately complicated.\#maizuru has been having and affair and milsiril has biases towards short lived races#both dote heavily on them but milsiril does it more clearly in an overprotective way#their sons have complicated emotions towards them. and theyâre right for that#lets see⊠toshiro always eats the food maizuru makes due to the love in its preparation. he doesnât seem to have a relationship with his mok#*mom#so he was very close to maizuru#but after finding out she and his dad was having an affair he closed off from her. maizuru still heavily dotes on him however#maizuru also invented a spell to scare his child self into returning to her#and trained ninja techniques into him (I believe?)#and milsiril (though she did train him) didnât like the idea of kabru going into dangerous dungeons#she ended up coddling him in that regard. he doesnât know how to do household chores (but I doubt toshiro knows either LMAO)#(he probably has servants or maizuru who do it for him)#but in fighting specifically:#milsiril also trained kabru in sword fighting but unlike maizuruâs training itâs not very useful in the dungeon#now back to food:#unlike maizuruâs food the elven foods milsiril gave kabru werenât as well received#that has to do with the different culture heâs from though#he thinks of his birth momâs food more and had a stringer relationship with her#*stronger#despite some issues kabru says that heâs grateful for her as his foster mom (iirc)#I imagine toshiroâs probably the same way even if he wouldnât admit it (BECAUSE MAIZURU IS FUCKING HIS DAD???)#toshiro doesnât feel close to any of his family so his biggest connections as a kid probably wouldâve been maizuru and hien.#kabru has milsiril and rin and all anyone could ever want but would never want to return to#anyways. end of essay. tldr: milfs are messy

Oh my god one last thing my ex took me to outside lands and when we tried to watch lana del rey he laid down on the grass and had a âpanic attackâ (this was after months of him talking about how he didnât like her) so we went to see foo fighters after a bit and he was FINE
#LANA i know his sister works for you BUT TRUST MY WORD AND GIVE ME A FREE TICKET PLEASEâŠ#MY FIRST TIME SEEING YOU WAS RUINED GIRL⊠she was so good too like i was saving her songs to spotify that night#im reliving all this because i found out a lot of his exes and ex friends hang out together and two of them invited me so it was me an ex an#d an ex friend just swapping stories and first of all. he said he got cheated on by this girl and she NEVER DID IT (HE would have emotional/#angry outbursts at HER though) (allegedly heâs acknowledged to her that the cheating never happened too) and 2. this is obviously making me#mentally rehash everything again. i feel so bad for his current girlfriend and also for the person i ââstoleââ him from though i really hesi#tate to blame myself after hearing about his patterns. first of all he wouldve done this with anyone who was vulnerable around him and secon#d i was the only reason he was at all honest with them. he was fully planning to gaslight this ex and me and his dad had to convince him not#to. they look like theyre happy now and im very happy for them over that. oh my god that man was evil he told me for WEEKS about every time#his then partner had talked shit about me while i made clear that i didnt care and wasnt very interested but he kept going. god i cant belie#ve this was my life a year ago.#the one thing i can say is that i out freaked him because throughout our short relationship i made him so insecure that a week after i told#to never speak to me again he called me asking if he really was ugly.#I CANNOT BELIEVE I HAD TO TEND TO A GROWN MAN WHILE LANA DEL REY WAS RIGHT THERE BECAUSE HE WAS SO OPPOSED TO BEING AROUND HER. LANAAAA#times like these i get so mad i dont know what to do but ultimately remembering that he has not achieved any of his goals because he refuses#to face himself really helps me. god man IVE achieved some of his goals and i wasnt even trying to#a really awful part of all of this was all of the friends who knew him taking his side. because they didnt know him well enough to know what#he was actually like.#i was talking to my ex friend of four years and she was like not to blame you but he was probably really vulnerable from his time with [ex p#rior to me]ââ because heâs been going around alleging that that ex was abusive. and she was implying i took advantage of him. so i had to go#into detail about what an awful awful person he was and the sort of state i was in when this relationship took place. hannah lee you are#not seeing your little jehovahâs witness heaven.#anyways redirecting this energy im very happy with the way my life is and the way i am now. and im grateful for it i would not have ever bee#n able to imagine having the sort of peace and motivation i feel now. life feels like it can and will change for the better and it keeps pro#ving that right all the time#it just hurts sometimes having that as my first experience and not even being able to vocalize what was wrong bc i just didnt know hurts#oh i forgot one of his besties can see my account bc weâre sort of mutuals. i doubt heâs looking he did the whole unfollowing the ex bc sheâ#s allegedly amoral thing after the breakup but if he is hi isaac#he did on rare occasion show me selfless kindness but ultimately your best friend is a creep. i donât want to be involved with anyone from#our school but I hope you know this and I hope youâre proud

athene is actually the most infuriating person to try and confess your feelings to. asking her on a date has lost all meaning to her because nine times out of ten it's really a cover for a business transaction anyway. but if anyone asks her for something more serious? for her to be their girlfriend? or tell her they love her? she just stares at them blankly and asks why ( regardless of her own feelings on the matter ). if someone wants to confess to her they have to write a research paper about it, cite their sources, have multiple points for each element of their argument. there's a good chance she'll still probably think they're lying because there are just too many cons to being with her. has absolutely asked someone if they're sick in response to being told 'i love you.'
#anyway that being said... ship with me đ#i'll never shut up ever ever again#her self doubt + weird self image issues really are something though#plus trust issues too?? yikes#she could love someone for years and they would never know it#she loves from afar a lot i think#because she's so inexperienced at how to show it properly#and so very very rarely would confess any sort of affection first#because it makes her feel like she's forcing people to sign up for a package deal of her trauma + the court + etc.#maybe they think they understand but (from her perspective) they don't#she gets better!! once she has something stable and established and she feels unrestricted but...#even then sometimes i think she's like 'what is wrong with u?? do u not see the dozens of better options??'

All the time, I hear about how there are people filtering Cersei through the lens of "poor misunderstood woobified victim who was trying her best and never actually did anything bad" and. WHERE ARE THEY?? WHERE ARE THESE PEOPLE?????
BECAUSE THIS HAS VERY MUCH NOT BEEN MY EXPERIENCE
#like I have no doubt that they exist somewhere#but I have never seen them!#90% of what I see is 'I hate her because she's a one-dimensional bitch and here are all of the horrible things I think she deserves'#I always wonder if these people are talking about me even though it would make no sense for them to even know I exist#(<-girl who notably does not often tag her cersei posts)#but. me saying 'here's where I think she was coming from' or 'sometimes she'll say something and I'll go 'yeah I get it' ' or 'there is#something very visceral and real and compelling and relatable about her' is not. me saying that she is a good person lol.#I have on several if not many occasions specifically mentioned how she is not A Good Personâą and that#I understand if her flaws make people uncomfortable.#(but I also talk about how I don't understand what makes her uniquely awful compared to other popular characters across various#franchises so I. again. DO wonder if the 'people excuse everything she did ever and think she's Goodâą' comments refer to me sometimes)#ANYWAY. the point is that people have sympathy for horrible actions when they come from anyone else but not from her hmmm gee I wonder why#people will try to be 'objective' and 'narratively-focused' in character evaluation unless it's her

I'm glad I'm not alone in wanting Ryan to get Rob to get a tumblr to see the amount of people who would shit themselves cause I would find it personally hilarious to not only see the fandom wide freakout but also Rob's reaction to said fandom. Frankenstein shunning his monster and then chasing it after he murders his fiancé and then dying in the pursuit vibes.
It would be hilarious!! I'm not ashamed of my blog at all, hey, if Rob wants to see what I get up to when it comes to his weird little show, that's good with me. I think it would be hysterical if he read any of my posts, and doubly so if he made an account and people started asking him about macdennis đ Cmon.
And... have we all forgotten the times where he used to lurk twitter anyway? I mean, I'm pretty sure he knows what we do here, tumblr account or not... Uh, pic related.
#ask#I don't fault anyone for forgetting the time he paid a sunny stan tuition even though the post didn't mention rob anywhere#but ive been convinced he lurks ever since. and didn't megan say she reads mythic quest fanfics?#those guys visit the sunny tags on tumblr REGULARLY already. I assure you.#if anything rob having a tumblr would give us more power. imagine the Neil gaiman type interactions. cmon!! it would be fun#i remember the only rob thing the post had was THIS REACTION PIC#and to this day im still wondering. how did he see that post? well. obviously he used to lurk stan accounts then.#this was during s14 airing btw. earlier times. pre-dee day. who knows what they do nowadays#but there is no doubt in my mind that at least megan lurks. and probably ryan reynolds too now??đ#considering 90% of the interactions on his post are sunny accounts. that is so funny to me already#this last post in particular is hilarious i wonder if he told rob he was posing for a tumblr post#my game theory is that rob WILL make an account post- canon macdennis (i am insane)#thank u for sending an ask to me i love answering asks

@beatingheart-bride
Despite the somewhat unsettling nature of her being able to bite through the tough shell of the crawdad (causing him to wonder briefly just how strong her teeth were, and what else she could possibly bite through), Randall didnât let that dampen his appetite, as he took a crawdad himself, digging in to its soft, flavorful flesh beneath the shell. He smiled and gave a hum of approval, commenting, âThereâs not much better than a good crawfish boil!âÂ
It was easily one of his favorite dishes his mother made: Sure, it took a little effort, what with him and his father catching the little suckers down by the water (and trying not to get pinched in the process, which was no easy feat), but it was all worth it in the end, in his opinion, to get a plate full of flavorful crawdad, accompanied by some potatoes and corn, to feast on after a long, hard day. A small, quick lunch (usually a sandwich and little else) wasnât super-filling, but he knew he could look forward to a good dinner, at least.
And he was happy to share with Emily, as he grabbed the small cob of corn to dig into it as well: He and Pa had gotten pretty lucky with their crawdad haul that day they caught her, luckier than they had the last couple of times theyâd been out (âtheyâre biting today!â Wilhelm had exclaimed cheerfully, only to be caught by the critterâs little pincers, causing him to curse under his breath a little, before joking to his son, âor pinching!â), so why not share the spoils with her, he thought? There was plenty more downstairs, fortunately, so if they wanted more, they could get more (again, a nice change of pace from the last few attempts to catch some dinner).
#((she's really been through a lot in the last; what; two days?))#((she gets beaten and left to die by constance; she's then pulled out of the bayou by two humans))#((who she's unsure of what they'll do with her; they then bring her to their home and put her in a tub and tend to her))#((helping patch up her wounds; and now she's recovering; trying (along with randall) to get past the language barrier))#((and understand what this goofy human is trying to tell her; so i can see how even a small thing like a familiar plant))#((would mean a lot to her! her future no doubt seems unclear now; even though the paces have been kind to her))#((she no doubt still isn't sure of what they want; and doesn't know if she'll ever return to the bayou again))#((so a little reminder of home has to be refreshing!))#((also: what will you be seeing on broadway this summer? :Oc))#outofhatboxes#beatingheart-bride#V:Part of Your World

If I ever do get properly into dst character modding I like have to make an oni character mod at some point, but the issue is Id want it to be an Olivia mod so bad but also Nails is as far as I'm aware the only legal character name wise and as such it feels like it has to be them, y'know for the bit. But also I have already written too much Olivia dst dialogue and I need an excuse to use it damnit
#rat rambles#oni posting#starve posting#also good ol dr winslow would be dead in seconds I think#not that most of the cast would fare much better but I believe in olivia to last longer#more importantly though it would simply be easier to justify olivia kit wise as while nails was involved in printing pod stuff they didnt#yknow. invent the damn thing.#idk we technically dont have olivia initials yet she Could have a w middle name if we believe hard enough#we have a jackie middle initial tho so shes off the table doubly because she also would have like 50 in each stat lol#also again olivia constant dialogue is just so much more fun to write#especially when it comes to mob examination quotes#also several jokes and bits that I could technically do with nails too but olivia is easier to craft a consistent voice for#as much as we get a surprisingly large amount of characterization for nails they still only have one log of dialogue at the end of the day#like I have hcs and stuff but they are fragile as hell#klei could come out swinging and recontectualize everything theyve ever said at any time if they wanted to it wouldnt be hard#again its one log with little context to most of the things they say#so while we have a glimpse of their character we don't rly see them in enough contexts to rly get a solid general characterisation I think#not that I want more per say my point is simply that any hcs I do have could easily be disproven by not a lot of new information#like itd be very easy for them all to crumble into dust the second klei adds more logs#technically many of my olivia hcs are equally fragile but those are mostly the ones that dont matter much in this context#like idk they could be like fun fact olivia actually loves kids and gets along great with them but I doubt thatll happen#oh that reminds me scariest thing abt oni actually is the idea that some of our lil scientist guys could have kids#like the email abt there not being a bring your kids to work day doesnt inherently mean any of the characters we know have kids but it#makes me remember the possibility and that scares me#like I dont wanna think abt devon potentially having a kid I dont wanna imagine them putting pictures of their baby with toast online#I mean I do but its still like wtf why do you have a life that existed thats scary and it also makes me sad but its also funny so its good#I still stand by my frankie and mason divorce hc frankie got custody of the baby devon got custody of the food blog#its a good think jackie and olivia dont have a kid thatd suck for the kid so bad#like imagine your moms being the worlds saddest wettest cats of women and just having to grow up with that#and theyd be terrible parents for sure jackie would be an absent father and olivia would become an alcoholic

One thing about me is that if there's so much hype around something and I haven't Also been extremely hyped leading up to that something then I'm not going to be partaking in it for the next 39 business years.
Sorry Miss Swift, 31 songs in one go is fucking bonkers and I can't tell if my car radio is messed up or if the first 5 legitimately sounded the same.
Loved the music video though. Love a cameo love an easter egg Loved that black dress loved the opening sequence.
#sorry also to my friends who will no doubt expect me to have listened to it at some point#she's just a person though#and the music will still be there to discuss later#we need to stop idolizing people#yes she's cool. yes she's talented#no one else would ever be able to drop 2 albums and keep the publics interest though#like girl come on#anyway though based on what I've seen from the video I'm intruiged by the aesthetic of this era#very mary shelley Frankenstein female rage type shit#also confused me that no one knew about clara bow until now or gave a shit until Taylor said something but i suppose she does use her#platform to spread light on different overlooked things sometimes#haven't listened to black dog but in folklore (not the album ffs) a black dog represents impending misfortune and bad luck#and ik miss ma'am does her research so I'm curious to eventually see how that ties in#ttpd#the tortured poets department#taylor swift#my post

Halloween AU!!!
hey so. i put SOOOOO much effort into this au and for what? at least it ended up looking cool? anyways Halloween is my favorite holiday and i just HAD to make something for them!
i had a LOT of ideas for what everyone would be, but i really wanted to stick to a certain theme cause it's based around Halloween. i knew i had to have a vampire, werewolf, and a witch. cause like... obviously. iconic Halloween stuff!! but i took some liberties with everyone else and i think they turned out pretty cool!!
Jason was originally a fox shifter (which i still love and might draw art for some day) but i went with a bear in the end. is that because i thought about tiny bear cub Jaybin and wanted to cry? yeah. yeah it is. i KNEW Steph was going to be my werewolf though i started doubting myself when i went to draw her. turned out to be my favorite drawing on here which makes sense cause she is my light my love my daughter my will to live and all that jazz
Tim was actually gonna be a harpy but thank god i didn't go for that in the end. Duke was the one that was a bitch and a half trying to figure out BUT!! comments on the post asking what y'all thought led me towards Psychic so THANK YOUUUU everybody that commented!! (specifically those who thought of ghost!! Duke and Tim ended up being a perfect duo in this au)
Babs was pretty easy to figure out what I wanted for her. I read somewhere that they are seen as protectors of forests/ are considered spiritual authority figures and also.... she looks cool as fuck. Did not expect how easy it was to find a ref for a deer in a wheelchair though? I can never find the right hand or face angle reference but that was super easy???
For Bruce there was literally no question he HAD to be human. it's literally so funny that everyone who knows Batman thinks he's a spooky vampire but he's human. his first son, however?????? THAT'S the vampire. I knew Dick had to be a vampire too. A little nod towards that one comic run but in my au nothing bad happens ever đ„° Damian also being a bat shifter is very on purpose because how funny is it that he's a bat man. Literally not a single person in the League thinks that Bruce is telling the truth about being human. Bruce you are NOT beating the secretly a vampire allegations.
adding in Jay's hilarious joke it's so fucking funny:
Alfred is actually a demon. I CAN NOT remember who made this post so if someone can help me find it, it would be appreciated!! because this was inspired by them!!! but somewhere i saw someone talk about Alfred being a demon that Thomas and Martha made a deal with (i think it was for an au idea?) and I just HAD to put it here. Alfred looks so human and everyone expects it, but he's definitely not. I put the ??? because it's so fucking funny. see if you can spot the 1 hint i put on his drawing that something is amiss!!
Peter is from an alternate dimension still, but it is not a world of creatures like him, it's just the same as LoF canon except Peter grew some extra limbs and eyes. He finds that it's actually pretty easy to fit in with the Waynes. Hard to feel like a freak when a guy can turn into a fucking bear, or your dad is a vampire, and the teenagers in the family are trying to summon ghosts or make potions.
additional doodles for this au:
i am still debating whether i am going to draw something for this au or write a oneshot, but i DO want to do something with these for Halloween
#(putting a hypnosis thingmabob in front of you)#oooooo you don't notice i forgot peter's tooth gap in the character design sheets#oooooo#you're getting veryyy sleepy and so you don't notice#listen he was the last one i drew and i worked on this for 9 hours#halloween au#halloween#erinwantstowrite#ao3#ao3 fanfic#leap of faith ao3#peter parker#leap of faith catch me if you can#leap of faith#thank you for the ask!#dick grayson#bruce wayne#jason todd#tim drake#steph brown#cassandra cain#duke thomas#babs gordon#damian wayne#alfred pennyworth#batfamily#batfam#art#character design#character illustration

Past Wounds, Present Hearts P.SH
ăPairingă : exbully!sunghoon x fem!reader
ăWord Countă : 10.5k
ăGenreă : smut, angst, somewhat fluff, college au
ăSummaryă : you have felt resentment for sunghoon ever since the hell he put you through in middle school. now you find out he goes to your university.... and he's kinda hot?
ăWarningsă : MINORS DO NOT INTERACT!!! mentions of bullying, lower quality of life due to bullying, self doubt, mentions of drinking alcohol, implied intoxication in some scenes, college parties, sunghoon calls reader petnames, kissing, sharing a bed, nipple play, fingering, titty sucking, handjob, sunghoon turns out to be a sweetheart, cum eating, falling asleep together, and more
ăAuthors Noteă : i originally intended for the story to have a different ending but i changed my mind half way though and it would have been too fast paced for the word count given, i will definitely make a part two if enough people ask! not proofread
SUPPORT BY REBLOGGING
I hate him. The smug look on his face when I walk pass him in the main campus hall. All of the girls clawing on to his shoulder, begging for his attention without knowing what fucking loser he is. The way all of the professors are so impressed with him for doing practically nothing in class. Getting a full ride scholarship for basketball to this school. I have grown sick of it.
Park Sunghoon. The name still twists my stomach after all these years. Middle school was when my hatred started for Him. He was my middle school bully. Always teasing me in front of the whole class, or making comments behind my back. What hurts the most is that he doesnât seem to care that he used to act this way, or maybe he thinks I have forgotten. The truth is, I will never forget. It sits at the back of my mind all of the time. The people who know me from middle school still view me as this âdisgustingâ girl who was unlikeable, because of the things that Sunghoon would do to me.
It took years for me to build myself back up, so when I saw that he was planning on going to the same university as me last fall, I was more than worried. But this wasnât middle school anymore. I canât let him get away with treating me like an outcast who doesnât deserve friends.First semester of university is always scary, I was always afraid to come out my shell and meet new people. I wanted to stay on top of acedemics. My best friend Yuqi was the complete opposite. Any opportunity she got to go out and party, she would be there. And, she would surprisingly maintain decent grades as well. Now that I think about it, I have never been a party goer, not even in highschool. Then again, there werenât too many parties that either sounded interesting, or that I was invited to.
âKappa Alpha is having a party this Friday, you in?â Yuqi suggested. She always gets the same response. âNo, you already know I canât, we have finals next weekâ I shrugged. âBut Kappaaaaaa!â Yuqi whined, her voice getting higher every passing second. We were walking down the hallway towards our classes. A few students looked over, but quickly decided that they didnât want to look any further. âI hear that Kappa Alpha has the best Christmas parties every year. You have to comeâ Yuqi insisted, grabbing onto my arm. I rolled my eyes. âYuqi⊠You donât actually think Iâm going to attend one of their parties?â Yuqi gave me a confused stare, trying to read through my expression. âWhy not?â âSunghoon is in that frat, Iâm pretty sure he lives in the frat house as well. You would catch me dead before seeing me step foot into that trashy hell holeâ I explained, crossing my arm defensively. She knows how he treated me in middle school, she was there to witness it.
âWhat? He canât be, out of all the parties I have gone to there, I have not seen him a singular timeâ Yuqi said with her eyebrows furrowed, putting emphasis into each word.. I tried to tell her that yes, he is the type of guy to hide out in the frat house and not attend, but she had no idea. After some debate, she eventually gave up asking me.
That night, I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling fan as it spun lazily above me. Yuqi's words echoed in my mind, mixing with memories I'd rather forget. The Christmas lights strung across my dorm room cast a soft glow, but they did little to brighten my mood.
I rolled onto my side, hugging my pillow close. Why did Sunghoon have to be here, at my university, in my space? It wasn't fair. I'd worked so hard to leave that part of my life behind, to become someone new. Someone stronger.
But was I really stronger if I was still letting him dictate my choices? I grabbed my phone, thumb hovering over Yuqi's contact. She was probably out somewhere, living it up like she always did. I envied her sometimes, her ability to just⊠exist without all this baggage.
"Maybe I should go," I whispered to the empty room. The words felt foreign on my tongue. Me? At a Kappa Alpha party? It was absurd.
I sat up, running a hand through my messy hair. Yuqi would be ecstatic if I went. And isn't that what college is supposed to be about? New experiences, stepping out of your comfort zone?
But then I imagined walking into that frat house, the pulsing music, the crowded rooms. And somewhere in there, Sunghoon. Everybody loving him not knowing the kind of cruel person he is on the inside. My stomach clenched at the thought.
"This is stupid," I muttered, flopping back onto my bed. "I don't need to prove anything to anyone."
But even as I thought it, I knew it wasn't true. I did need to prove something - to myself. That I could face my past, that I could exist in the same space as Sunghoon without falling apart.
I picked up my phone again, this time opening my messages to Yuqi. "Hey," I typed, then paused. Was I really doing this? My finger hovered over the send button as doubt crept in. But then I thought of Yuqi's excited face, of the possibility of actually enjoying myself for once.
Before I could change my mind, I quickly typed out the rest of the message and hit send. "Hey. About that Kappa Alpha party⊠I think I might go after all." I set my phone down, my heart racing. What had I just agreed to?ââââââââââââââââYuqi didnât see my message until the morning, but I can only imagine her physical reaction after reading her written one. âReally???? I never thought this day would come. I promise you will love it!!!â my screen read. Her overuse of punctuation was telling enough about she felt. It was Friday morning, meaning that the party was going to be later in tonight. If I plan my time correctly, we can leave my dorm around 8pm, and I would have had all of the studying done that at I needed to do for the night.
I couldnât help feeling nervous at the thought of attending a party with Sunghoon, but I decided that this may be the perfect chance to get to know him better. Okay, not âget to know him betterâ but maybe this could finally give him a chance to clear the air between us, to apologize properly for everything that he did to me. But the chances of him apologizing are slim to none. When I see him in campus he seems to be the snobby type, unable to admit that they are wrong. Trust me, I have heard the stories going around campus.
I spent the rest of the day in a fog, my mind drifting between lectures and study sessions. The impending party loomed over me, a mix of dread and nervous anticipation.
By the time I returned to my dorm, the sun was already setting. I sat at my desk, attempting to review my notes, but the words blurred together. My phone buzzed - another excited text from Yuqi about outfit choices. I sighed, closing my textbook. There was no point in pretending to study anymore.
~~~~~
At 7:00, a knock at my door announced Yuqi's arrival. She entered with her usual whirlwind energy, arms full of clothes and makeup. "Okay," she said, dumping everything onto my bed. "Let's make you look amazing."
I eyed the pile warily. "Yuqi, I'm not trying to impress anyone. Especially not Sunghoon." She paused, giving me a soft look. "This isn't about him. It's about you feeling good about yourself. Now, let's start with this sweater."
For the next half hour, we sifted through outfits. Yuqi was patient, letting me veto anything too revealing or flashy. We finally settled on a soft, cropped sweater and high-waisted jeans - comfortable, but still party-appropriate.
As I changed, Yuqi chatted about her day, her excitement for the party. Her casual banter helped ease my nerves, reminding me why I'd agreed to this in the first place. This was about spending time with my best friend, not about Sunghoon.
We left my dorm at 8:15, the cool night air a welcome relief for my flushed cheeks. The walk to the frat house was short, but with each step, the butterflies in my stomach intensified. Music pulsed in the distance, growing louder as we approached.
Outside the house, we paused. Yuqi squeezed my hand. "You okay?" she asked, her voice gentle.
I took a deep breath, nodding. "Yeah. Let's do this."
We stepped inside, and I was immediately overwhelmed. The air was thick with the smell of alcohol and too many bodies in too small a space. Yuqi leaned close, "I'm going to get us some drinks. Will you be okay for a minute?"
I nodded, not trusting my voice. As she disappeared into the crowd, I stood there, taking in my surroundings. Groups of people clustered around, laughing and dancing. I recognized a few faces from classes, but no one I knew well.
And then, across the room, I saw him. Sunghoon, leaning against a wall, surrounded by his usual admirers. He was laughing at something someone said, his head thrown back. For a moment, I was transported back to middle school, hearing that laugh directed at me, mocking and cruel.
Our eyes met for a brief second, and I swear I saw something flicker in his expression. Surprise? Recognition? But before I could process it, someone bumped into me, breaking the moment.
I turned away, my heart pounding. What was I doing here? This was a mistake. I was about to head for the door when Yuqi reappeared, pressing a red cup into my hand.
"Here," she said with a smile. "It'll help you relax." I took a small sip, the unfamiliar burn of alcohol hitting the back of my throat. As we stood there, Yuqi chatting animatedly about the people around us, I felt myself slowly start to unwind. Maybe agreeing to come here wasnât too bad of an idea.I was just starting to relax, the music and Yuqi's chatter creating a comfortable bubble around us, when I saw him approaching. Sunghoon, weaving through the crowd, his eyes fixed on... us? No, it couldn't be. But it was.
He stopped right in front of us, that infuriatingly perfect smile plastered on his face. "Hey, Yuqi," he said, his voice smooth as ever. Then his eyes slid to me. "And Y/N,⊠it's been a while, hasn't it?" I felt my body tense, my grip tightening on the red cup in my hand. Yuqi glanced between us, her eyes wide with surprise and a hint of concern. "Sunghoon," I managed to say, my voice coming out colder than I'd intended. But then again, why should I care? He seemed unfazed by my tone. "I didn't expect to see you here. You're not usually the party type, right?" The casual way he said it, as if he knew me, as if we were old friends catching up, made my blood boil. How dare he act so nonchalant after everything? "People change," I replied curtly. "Not that you'd know anything about that." I avoided eye contact. I saw Yuqi wince beside me, but I couldn't bring myself to care. Sunghoon's smile faltered for a moment, a flicker of... something passing across his face. Confusion? Hurt? Good.
"Right," he said, recovering quickly. Looking down at the ground with a half smile, he takes âââââââââââââââmy snarky response as a que to leave. âIâll see you around, (Y/N)â he scoffs and walks away.
âHe is such an assholeâ Yuqi complains, rubbing my back as a way to try to comfort me. âYou responded wellâ I watched Sunghoon's tall, muscular figure get lost in the crowd, a mix of emotions swirling inside me. Part of me felt satisfied with how I'd handled the encounter, but another part felt... unsettled. I took a long swig from my cup, hoping the alcohol would dull the conflicting feelings. "Thanks," I mumbled to Yuqi, grateful for her support. She gave me a reassuring smile, but I could see the concern in her eyes. "Do you want to leave? We can if you're not comfortable." I considered it for a moment. The idea of going back to my dorm, burying myself in my blankets and pretending this night never happened, was tempting. But then I thought about how that's exactly what the old me would have done. The me that let Sunghoon's actions dictate her life.
"No," I said, surprising myself with the firmness in my voice. "I'm not leaving. I have just as much right to be here as he does." Yuqi's face broke into a wide grin. "That's my girl!" she cheered, linking her arm through mine. "Let's mingle a bit, shall we?" As we made our way through the crowded room, I couldn't help but notice Sunghoon's gaze following us. Every time I glanced in his direction, he looked away, but not before I caught a flicker of... something in his eyes. It wasn't the cruel amusement I remembered from our school days. It was something else, something I couldn't quite place.
Yuqi introduced me to a few of her friends, and I found myself actually enjoying the conversations. It felt... normal. Like maybe I could do this whole college social scene thing after all. But then, over someone's shoulder, I saw Sunghoon again. He was looking right at us, his expression unreadable. Our eyes met for a brief moment, and I felt a jolt of... something. Before I could analyze it further, he quickly averted his gaze, a faint blush coloring his cheeks. Wait, was Sunghoon blushing? I shook off the thought. It was probably just the alcohol playing tricks on my mind.
As the night wore on, I found myself relaxing more and more. The alcohol helped, but it was more than that. Every minute I spent here, laughing with Yuqi and her friends, was a minute I was reclaiming for myself. Yet, I couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. Every so often, I'd catch Sunghoon looking in my direction. But it wasn't the mocking stare I was used to. There was something almost... wistful about it. Once, when our eyes met, he even offered a small, hesitant smile before quickly turning the other way. I donât understand why he is trying to smile at me. It was confusing, to say the least. This wasn't the Sunghoon I remember. The Sunghoon who had made my life miserable. This Sunghoon seemed... different. Unsure. Almost vulnerable. As Yuqi and I were preparing to leave, I excused myself to use the bathroom. On my way back, I quite literally bumped into Sunghoon in the hallway. "Oh, sorry," he mumbled, steadying me with a hand on my arm. The touch sent an unexpected jolt through me. "You okay?" I nodded, unsureness in my voice. We stood there for a moment, an awkward silence stretching between us. "Listen, Y/N," he started, then paused, running a hand through his jet black hair. "I... I'm glad you came tonight. It was good to see you."
Before I could respond, he quickly walked away, leaving me standing there, completely baffled. It wasn't until much later, as Yuqi and I were stumbling back to our dorms, arms linked and giggling about nothing in particular, that I realized something. For the first time in years, I'd spent an entire evening in the same space as Sunghoon without letting it ruin my night. And more than that, I was left with the strangest feeling that maybe there was more to Sunghoon than I'd allowed myself to see. As I collapsed onto my bed, exhausted but oddly content, I couldn't help but feel like something had shifted. I wasn't naive enough to think one party had erased years of hurt and resentment. But maybe it was a start.ââââââââââââââââ
~~~~~
The next morning I woke up disoriented, borderline hungover. Roll over to the side to check the time on my phone. 11:09AM? It honestly felt like I slept for three days with how many drinks I consumed. I look further down the screen to see the notifications:
1:18 AM: @prksnghn02 started following you!
1:19 AM: @prksnghn02 Liked your post!
I must have fallen asleep to quickly too see this last night, but that was definitely right after we left the party.
I scroll through the conversation, smiling slightly at the messages
2:11 AM: @prksnghn02 Hey! You still here?
2:11 AM: @prksnghn02 I get it if you donât want to speak to me.
Why was he messaging me. What gives him the right? I igonore the message and delete the message request. All that before my thumb hesitantly hovered over the follow button on his profile, eventually turning it grey. I spent the weekend as usual, going to my job at night and studying in the mornings. Though I had the awkward interaction with Sunghoon at one party, I think that I could see myself going with Yuqi to another party some time. Not soon though because finals start on Monday and I have to pass to keep my financial aid. Thatâs another thing that pisses me off. I work day and night to pay for my schooling by myself, and Sunghoon gets it all handed to him for being okay at basketball. He teased me for growing up less wealthy than him, but if he were in my shoes, he wouldnât have thought it was so funny.
Monday morning I was walking through the main hall on campus, where they have to coffee shop that I occasionally stop by. Of course this time when I went, Sunghoon was standing at the bookstore across the walk way, talking to his girl-toys. It took everything in me to not make things awkward by looking in his direction, but for the split second I looked that way, he was already eyeing me down. I pretended to not notice, continuing into the coffee shop line as I would do normally. The line was fairly short. I looked down at my phone to distract myself until it was my turn to order. âI am sorry (Y/N)â a familiar voice says behind me, him lightly grazing my shoulder.
My eyes immediately snap to the owner of the voice. His brown eyes were staring directly into mine as if he could tell exactly what I was thinking just by looking at me. And I know he can. âHeyâ he seems to say, flashing me the smallest of smirks as his hand rests on the counter to my left. I scoff in disbelief. He really is serious now isnât he. I try to ignore him and continue with my order, but Sunghoon stops me in my tracks. My heart starts hammering harder in my chest as I glance around to make sure no one overheard. âHey (Y/N),â he repeats, giving me his infamous smirk. âI really am sorryâ he continues. Heâs watching me with a curious tilt to his head as he waits for my response.
âCan I buy you a drink? Maybe we can talk some more?â For a fraction of a moment, itâs hard to believe whatâs happening.
âWhatever you are trying to do, I donât want any part of itâ I said sternly, trying to shoo him away. I know he could see the annoyance on my face but that wasnât enough to get him to leave. âPlease, I want to make things rightâ he begged with a hint of charm in his voice. He reaches out to hold my wrist but this time instead of swatting him away, I let him. If anyone deserves an apology it should be me. He takes a step closer to me, tilting his head slightly. âFine I guess, but do not expect to get anything out of meâ I agreed hesitantly. His facial expression completely changed from worried to⊠relieved? We ordered together in line while I tried my best to ignore him. His scent was a distraction. It was captivating. It was comparable to mohagany and mint. Admittedly, he is tall and handsome, even when we were in middle school he had always been cute. But I would never say that out loud. Eventually, his named was called and we both went up to grab our drinks. âThank you Sunghoonâ I said while looking down, trying to get out of the situation as soon a possible. âWaitâ he says before I get to far away. âI will text youâ he added. I half way smiled and walked away.
~~~~~
At lunch, I found myself leaning against Yuqi as we sat at one of our tables outside. âHow do you feel?â she asked. âBetterâ I admitted. âItâll take some getting used to, but I think Iâm doing betterâ She nodded, seemingly satisfied by my reply.
âYuqi?â I spoke again once I had my full attention back on her. She turned her attention towards me expectantly.
âWhy donât you give him another chance?â she sighed, rolling her neck around. âI mean, he seems like he is genuinely trying to make it up to you.â
âYes he is putting in the effort now, but the pain that he put me through doesnât just go away in an instant, it will take time for me to trust himâ
âI understandâ she muttered.
~~~~~
A few days had passed but I had never received a message from Sunghoon. Maybe he forgot or maybe he was scaredâŠ. I donât know. But I canât help but to think that I was maybe looking forward to that message. Yuqi was right, maybe he does deserve another chance. The library was my number one studying location. It was quiet, I could focus, and nobody bothers me. I actually have some time to myself. I have tested out every study area here and the to floor is by far my favorite. I press the 5 on the elevator control pad, and as the doors start closing, someoneâs hand is placed between the doors, causing them to shoot back open. It was Sunghoon. I awkwardly scoot to the edge of the confined space to make sure there was more than enough room between us. His eyes light up when he realizes I was the one in the elevator.
âWould it be a problem if I rode with you?â he asked hesitatingly with an awkward smile.
âNo, why would there be a problem?â I replied quickly. There was an awkward silence for a few seconds after my answer, and then I heard the elevator ding and the doors slowly start closing again. God, being around him gave me mixed emotions. His aura is so captivating, but his personality is the opposite. And not to mention that mohagany scent again. We rode to the fifth floor in total silence and exited the elevator once it stopped. When we both made way out of the elevator to walk our own directions, He gently grazed my shoulder and said âGood luck with finalsâ and walked the other direction.
-
Later that same evening while I was still on the library, my phone pinged with a new notification.
prksnghn02: Hey are you available?
prksnghn02: I know I said I was sorry but I really want you to know how I feel. I canât do it over text.
I think this is the message that I have been waiting to see. I would appreciate to see him and have him fully apologize, though I donât think this is the right time. Itâs the middle of finals week and lord knows I am already struggling as is. I look up from my phone, observing my surroundings, and spot Sunghoon across the almost empty room lounging on a library bean-bag. Alone. Thatâs a first considering his royalty equivalent status on campus. He was clearly looking at me when I opened his message.
yourusername: Hey, sorry. I really need to study for this Sociology final. I can definitely carve out a time to meet next week.
I look up at him and point at my phone, making a frowny face and his expression mirrors mine.
prksnghn02: Who is the professor? I aced my sociology class I took over the summer. If you need any help lmk.
He looks at me with a thumbs up. His offer seems tempting, but what would I do? Sit there and hear him lecture me? It would already be hard enough to pay attention given how his arms are looking in that black fitted top.
yourusername: I will think about it.
I try to focus on my sociology notes, but my eyes keep drifting back to Sunghoon. He's still lounging on the bean bag, but now he has a textbook open on his lap. Every so often, he glances up, catching my eye before we both quickly look away. The tension is palpable, even from across the room. I sigh, running a hand through my hair. This is getting ridiculous. I'm here to study, not to play this weird game of cat and mouse with my former bully turned... what? Potential friend? The thought makes me uncomfortable. I make a split second decision on impulse and grab my phone, maybe regretting my decision later.
yourusername: Okay fine, come help me.
I witness Sunghoon look at his phone and shoot up out of his seat within the span of 3 seconds. Impressive. My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs as Sunghoon practically skidded to a stop in front of my desk. It was a stark contrast to his usual nonchalance. A smile tugged at the corner of his lips, and for a moment, I was back in middle school, his laughter echoing in the halls, the same laughter that used to sting.
âSo, sociology huh?â he said with the most awkward tone possible. âWhat do you need help withâ he continues, signaling his hand towards my messy notes. My notebook has definitely seen better days. I sighed, shoving my phone into the abyss of my backpack.
"Everything feels like gibberish. Professor Ramirez throws these massive lectures at us, and it all just blends together." Surprised laughter rumbled out of him.
"Ramirez? Yeah, he can be a bit much. But trust me, sociology isn't actually that complicated. Let's see your notes." Tentatively, I slid my well-worn notebook across the desk. He flipped through the pages, his brow furrowing in concentration. The silence stretched, broken only by the soft rustle of turning paper. I snuck a peek at him. His features were softened by a focus I wouldn't have expected. "Okay," he finally said, looking up. "This isn't so bad. You've got the basic concepts down. I think you're just getting overwhelmed by the details."
Relief flooded me. Maybe I wasn't completely incompetent after all. He settled into the chair across from me, his arm brushing mine for a moment as he reached for a pen. He continued to sort through my notes, trying to piece together what I may not be understanding. He was surprisingly patient with me, and even created examples for me to try and understand better. Not to mention that I couldnât keep my eyes off of him as he spoke. His black hair falling loosely in front of his dark brown eyes and black glasses was so sexy.
"So basically, social stratification is like the ranking system within a society?" I summarized, feeling a flicker of accomplishment. Sunghoon grinned, a genuine smile that reached his eyes. "Exactly! See, you were getting it all along." He paused, then reached for a specific page in my notes.
"Now, let's talk about power structures and how they influence social mobilityâŠ" Time melted away as Sunghoon patiently guided me through the sociological knowledge. I peppered him with questions, surprised by my own comfort level.
He answered them all with good humor and a surprising depth of knowledge that made him seem worlds apart from the bully I knew in middle school and the jock he is now. I looked at his face once again, admiring the way he furrowed his eye brows when he concentrated. I am snapped out of my trance with
âWhat?â Sunghoon questioned me, tilting his face to the side. I couldnât even comprehend what had happened until a second or two later.
âNothing! Itâs nothing. Go on with what you were sayingâ I averted my eyes towards the table to try and hide the blood in my cheeks. âHeh, OkayâŠ.â he chuckles fiddling with the ring on his finger. He pauses for a few seconds and picks up with âYou should get home soon. You donât wanna have late nights, right?â
He looks me dead in the eye as he says this, a hint of playfulness in his gaze. I glanced at my phone, startled to see it was already 1 AM. We'd been studying for hours without realizing it. The library, usually bustling with stressed students, was now eerily quiet.
"Oh wow, I didn't realize how late it got," I mumbled, hastily gathering my notes. Sunghoon stretched, his shirt riding up slightly. I pretended not to notice.
"Yeah, time flies when you're having fun with sociology, right?" he said sarcastically. I rolled my eyes, but couldn't help the small smile that tugged at my lips. "Right, because power structures are just a barrel of laughs." As we packed up our things, Sunghoon hesitated, then asked, "Hey, um, would you like me to walk you back to your dorm? It's pretty late." I paused, considering. The old me would have immediately refused, not wanting to spend an extra second with him.
But now... "Sure," I found myself saying. "That would be nice." We stepped out into the cool night air, the campus very quiet around us. For a moment, we walked in silence, the only sound our footsteps on the pavement.
"So," Sunghoon started, breaking the silence. "Did you find the study session helpful?" I nodded, surprised by my own honesty.
"Yeah, actually. You explain things... differently than I expected." He raised an eyebrow.
"Different good or different bad?"
"Different good," I admitted. "You're more... patient than I thought you'd be." Sunghoon chuckled softly. "Well, don't sound so surprised. Im not just a handsome face ya know.â I felt a retort forming on my lips, but bit it back.
âYeah yeah, donât flatter yourself.â As we walked, I couldn't help but sneak glances at him. In the soft glow of the street lamps, he looked... different. Softer somehow. Less like the arrogant boy I'd built up in my mind and more like... well, just a guy. "You know," he said suddenly, his voice quiet. "I meant what I said before. About being sorry." I felt my body tense. "Sunghoon, we don't have to-"
"No, please," he interrupted, stopping in his tracks. I turned to face him, surprised by the earnestness in his eyes. "I was a jerk in middle school. More than a jerk. I was cruel, and I've regretted it for years. I just... I want you to know that. I am sorry." I stood there, stunned. This vulnerability was so at odds with the Sunghoon I thought I knew.
"I... thank you," were the only words that were able to come out of my mouth. - I turned to face towards him as we reached the enterance of my dorm building. âOkay, I guess I can take it from hereâ I said, grabbing my key card out of my backpack.
âGoodnight, Sunghoon.â I entered the building and the door was already halfway closed before Sunghoon grabbed it and called out behind me, "Wait!â I stopped mid step and turned to meet his curious gaze, confused by what he could possibly want to say. I gave him a questioning look as he approached me slowly. His hands fidgeted nervously, and he took one last glance around, making sure no one was watching before reaching up to touch my cheek hesitantly. His thumb brushed the area under my eye lightly, his hand moving downwards slowly until he rested his palm flat on my jaw. I was somehow okay with this, despite the butterflies in my stomach.
My heart thudded loudly against my chest as I stared at his hand resting gently on my skin, unable to tear my gaze away from his. There was something magnetic about the way his eyes bore into me with an intensity I have never felt. âHave a good night, (Y/N)â he said softly, grazing my bottom lip with his thumb. He leaned down slowly while gazing into my eyes, a soft smile gracing his lips. My breath hitched as he brought his other hand up and cradled my cheek, brushing some loose strands of hair out of my face. âYou too, Sunghoonâ
~~~~~
The end of finals week had finally come and I am not exaggerating when I say that this is the most relieved I have ever been in my life. I was lounging on my bed scrolling through tik tok and I saw a message pop up at the top of my screen.
prksnghn02: Hey! A few of us are having a small get-together at the frat house to celebrate surviving finals. You and Yuqi should come.
I stared at the message, my thumb hovering over the keyboard. A month ago, I would've immediately declined. But now⊠things were different. The study session with Sunghoon, our late-night walk, the way he'd touched my face before saying goodnight - it all swirled in my mind, a confusing mix of old resentment and new⊠something.
yourusername: Let me check with Yuqi. What time?
His response was almost immediate.
prksnghn02: Around 8? It's just a few people, nothing crazy. Promise it won't be like last time.
I couldn't help but smile at that. The last party had been a turning point, in a way.
yourusername: Okay, I'll let you know.
I rolled over, dialing Yuqi's number. She picked up on the second ring.
"Please tell me you're calling to drag me out of this post-finals funk," she groaned.
I laughed. "Actually, yeah. Sunghoon invited us to a small thing at the frat house. You in?"
There was a pause on the other end. "Sunghoon, huh? You two seem to be getting along better."
I could hear the smile in her voice. "We're⊠working on it," I admitted. "So, you coming or what?"
"Obviously," she said. "I'll be at yours in an hour. We need to talk about this Sunghoon situation, by the way."
I groaned. "There's no 'situation', Yuqi."
"Uh-huh. Sure. See you soon!"
She hung up before I could protest further. I flopped back onto my bed, staring at the ceiling.
An hour later, Yuqi was sprawled on my bed, watching me rummage through my closet.
"So," she said, drawing out the word. "You and Sunghoon, huh?"
I threw a shirt at her. "There's no 'me and Sunghoon'. We're just⊠I don't know. Not enemies anymore, I guess."
Yuqi sat up, her expression serious. "Look, I know he was awful to you in middle school. But people change, you know? And he seems to be really trying."
I sighed, sitting down next to her. "I know. It's just⊠complicated."
She bumped my shoulder with hers. "Life's complicated. Doesn't mean you can't give it a chance."
I nodded, not trusting myself to speak. Yuqi always had a way of cutting through my defenses.
"Now," she said, her tone lightening. "Let's find you something cute to wear. Just because it's not a 'situation' doesn't mean you can't look hot."
I rolled my eyes, but let her pull me back to the closet.The frat house was quieter than I'd ever seen it. No pulsing music, no crowds of people. Just the soft murmur of conversation and laughter drifting from the back patio. Sunghoon met us at the door, his face lighting up when he saw us. "Hey! You made it." he said, ushering us inside. His eyes lingered on me for a moment, and I felt a flutter in my stomach. "Drinks are in the kitchen, we're all out back."
As we followed him through the house, I couldn't help but notice how different he seemed here, in his element. Relaxed, open, a far cry from the popular Sunghoon I was used to seeing on campus. He was wearing a simple black t-shirt and jeans, but somehow he made it look effortlessly attractive. The back patio was strung with fairy lights, casting a warm glow over the small group gathered there. I recognized a few faces from classes, but it was indeed a much smaller crowd than the usual frat parties.
Yuqi immediately gravitated towards a group she knew, leaving me standing awkwardly by the door. Sunghoon appeared at my side, two red cups in hand. "Here," he said, offering me one. "It's just punch, but fair warning - Heeseung made it, so it's probably stronger than it tastes." I took a sip, the sweetness masking the unmistakable burn of alcohol. "Thanks for inviting us," I said, surprised by how much I meant it. Sunghoon's smile was soft, almost shy. "I'm glad you came. I wasn't sure if you would." "Honestly? I wasn't sure either," I admitted. He nodded, understanding in his eyes. "Well, I'm glad you did. Come on, let me introduce you to some people." As the night wore on, I found myself relaxing more and more. The punch was indeed strong, but the warm buzz it provided was pleasant.
Sunghoon stayed close, always making sure I was included in conversations, laughing at my jokes, his hand occasionally brushing against mine in a way that seemed both accidental and deliberate. I found myself studying him when he wasn't looking. The way his eyes crinkled when he laughed, the gestures he made when he was explaining something he was passionate about. It was hard to reconcile this Sunghoon with the boy who had tormented me in middle school. At some point, Yuqi caught my eye from across the patio and gave me a not-so-subtle thumbs up. I rolled my eyes at her, but I couldn't help the smile that subtly appears on my face.
As the night progressed, people started to drift away in twos and threes. Yuqi had gotten into an intense discussion about some TV show with a guy from her psych class, leaving Sunghoon and me alone on a small bench near the edge of the patio. The fairy lights cast a soft glow on his features, and I found myself staring longer than I should have. "You know," Sunghoon said, his words slightly slurred, "I never thought we'd be here like this." I raised an eyebrow. "What, drunk on your frat house patio?" He laughed, the sound warm and genuine. "No, I mean... talking. Like friends."
His hand found mine on the bench between us, his fingers intertwining with mine. The touch sent a jolt through me, but I didn't pull away. "I was such an ass to you in middle school," he continued, his voice dropping low. "I... I didn't know how to deal with how I felt about you back then." I froze, my heart suddenly pounding. "What do you mean?" Sunghoon turned to face me, his eyes intense even in their alcohol-glazed state. "I had the biggest crush on you," he admitted. "But I was too stupid and insecure to know how to handle it. So I lashed out instead." I sat there, stunned.
The Sunghoon I knew in middle school, the one who had made my life miserable, had a crush on me? It didn't make sense, and yet... "That doesn't excuse what I did," he continued, his thumb tracing circles on the back of my hand. "Nothing excuses that. But I want you to know how sorry I am. And how glad I am that you're giving me a chance to make it right."
I looked at our intertwined hands, then back up at Sunghoon's face. The vulnerability in his expression took my breath away. "I... I don't know what to say," I whispered. "You don't have to say anything," he murmured, leaning in slightly. "I just wanted you to know." We sat there for a moment, the air between us charged with possibility. Then, without thinking, I leaned in, closing the distance between us. Our lips met softly, hesitantly at first. Then Sunghoon's free hand came up to cup my cheek, deepening the kiss.
It was sweet and a little clumsy, tasting of punch with a hint of alcohol. His lips were softer than I'd imagined - not that I'd been imagining it, of course. When we broke apart, I could feel the heat in my cheeks. Sunghoon's eyes were wide, a mix of surprise and something else I couldn't quite name.
"I... wow," he breathed, his thumb gently caressing my cheek. Before I could respond, the patio door slid open and Yuqi's voice rang out. "Y/N? You out here?" Sunghoon and I sprang apart, but not before Yuqi caught sight of us. Her facial expression completely changed, a knowing smirk spreading across her face.
"Sorry, am I interrupting something?" she asked, her tone teasing. I stood up quickly, nearly losing my balance. Sunghoon steadied me with a hand on my arm, the touch sending another jolt through me. "We were just... talking," I managed to say, knowing how unconvincing it sounded. Yuqi's grin widened. "Uh-huh. 'Talking.' Got it. Well, hate to break up this... conversation, but it's getting late. We should probably head out." I nodded, suddenly feeling very sober. "Right. Yeah. Let's go."
As we made our way back through the house, I could feel Sunghoon's eyes on me. At the front door, he caught my hand. "Text me when you get home safe?" he asked, his voice low. I nodded, words not being able to leave my mouth. He squeezed my hand once before letting go. - The walk back to the dorms was quiet, Yuqi mercifully holding back her questions until we were safely in my room. "Okay," she said, flopping onto my bed. "Spill. Everything. Now." I sank into my desk chair, my mind replaying the kiss over and over. "I... I don't even know where to start," I admitted.
Yuqi's expression softened. "Start at the beginning. And don't leave anything out."
~~~~~
Going over to Sunghoons frat house became a frequent thing over the winter break. About twice a week I would go with Yuqi and kick back with a few of his friends, the same ones that were there the first time.
During those times, we'd always end up hanging out in Sunghoons backyard, or playing in his pool. He definitely acted a lot different around his friends than I expected. More relaxed, open, less guarded. In turn he opened up to me a bit too.
âIf I beat you in a round of pool, you have take a shot with meâ Sunghoon said chuckling, nudging his elbow against my arm. âCome on, thatâs fair!â
âI guess, but what do I get it I win?â
Sunghoon narrowed his eyes suspiciously. âYou know what, I can think of somethingâŠâ He moved closer to me, the tip of his nose inches away from mine. A shiver ran down my spine as I tried to resist the urge to pull away. Instead, I remained still, watching nervously as his mouth slowly drew closer and closer. âI think you might like itâ he said teasingly.
âI guess I should just let you win thenâ I sighed sarcastically, trying to ignore the butterflies built up in my stomach.
He scoffs âI promise, sweetheart, I donât biteâ he said, moving back just enough so he could meet my eyes. His voice was low and husky, sending a ripple of heat through my body.
âSo, what kind of shot?â I asked lightly, trying to ignore the way my voice shook as I spoke.
âI think I have some Don Julioâ he mused, running a hand along the back of his neck.
Sunghoon it first to break all of the pool balls apart, declaring him as solids. Drinking beer between each of our turns and chatting about family and work, Sunghoon was a lot better at pool than he originally let on, because soon enough he had only 2 solid balls left, while I still had 5 stripes.
I was expecting him to have already won at this point. When he set his cue on the edge, lining up to hit one of the solids into a hole, the 8 ball shoots across the board, into the hole closest to me.
âAw shit, I guess you wonâ He said with a fake defeated look.
I laughed, setting my bottle aside. âLooks like it. Thanks for letting me have a couple extra roundsâ I said, winking at him. I missed my cue stick by mere centimeters, but didnât care. My eyes were locked on Sunghoon; his hair stuck up everywhere, his skin glistening with sweat after his game, his shirt clung tightly to his frame.
A loud bang echoed off the walls, making us both jump slightly. Sunghoonâs eyes snapped towards the window behind me, his eyebrows furrowing in concern. âSomeone just slammed the garage door shutâ he whispered. âDid they close up for the night?â
We had spent so much time playing pool, we didnât realize that slowly, one by one, people started to go home. This meaning that Yuqi probably caught a ride home with someone and the only people left here are the 3 frat guys staying in the house over the break.
âItâs getting late, I should probably call an Uberâ I said, rubbing my eyes for focus.
âWhy leave so soon? Doing Uber this late at night could be dangerous, you never know what kind of people could be out there.â
âWhat other option do I have? Yuqi went home alreadyâ I replied, grabbing my phone.
âYou can stay here, you can sleep on my bed and I will set up a bed on the floorâ he offered.
âI donât know if that is the best ideaâ I muttered, staring at my feet.
âJust sleep here. Donât waste money on an Uber, and I promise I can take great care of you.â he urged me, placing his hand under my chin so that I would finally look at him. âDo you really believe that I would let you get into a strangers car right now?â
I hesitated before nodding. âFine, but only because I trust you.â
~
We pack up all of our stuff from outside, including my purse and all of the extra alcohol. There are so many room in the frat house and I have never been upstairs, I have no idea which one is Sunghoons. As the two of us climb the stairs up to his room, we both silently agree not to mention the previous events from the other night.
Sunghoon doesnât know why I kissed him, And I donât know why he kissed me. Even though he did tell me a little about the reason behind our relationship, it wouldnât matter, he was too far gone for it to change anything anyway.
The moment we step into his room, he tosses his backpack onto the floor and gestures to the large queen sized bed sitting in the corner of the room.
âI didnât bring anything to sleep in, I canât sleep wearing jeans and a tank topâ I said, gesturing to my jeans.
âDonât worry about it, I can lend you somethingâ he said, walking over to a laundry basket of clothes lying on the floor near the wardrobe. âI havenât gotten the chance to put up my laundry, let me find somethingâ he explains, rummaging through the basket.
He pulls out a large black t-shirt and some basketball shorts. âHere, try these onâ and walked over, handing them to me, a slight smile tugging at the edge of his lips.
âLook away!â I playfully shouted while waving my hand to shoo him. â
âOh my gosh, okayâ he covers his eyes like a cartoon character.
Luckily I was wearing some spandex shorts and a sports bra underneath, so even if he did sneak a peek, which Iâm sure he did, nothing too important would have been exposed. On him the clothes look normal size, but on me, the shirt fit like a dress and the shorts touched half way down my shins. âI guess I have no choiceâ I shrugged.
I crawl into his bed while he went to fetch an extra blanket for me out of his closet. At this point, he was already in his sleep attire. No shirt and some basketball shorts. It was hard to concentrate when he was standing there wearing nothing but shorts. I admit that maybe I was staring a bit longer than appropriate.
âYou like what you see?â he says in a cocky tone, chuckling at my embarrassment.
âShut up, you are so annoyingâ I scoff and roll my eyes, laying back down on the bed.
âHaha okayâŠâ he smirks as he stands up from the closed with the blanket in his hand. âHopefully this will keep you warm enoughâ he said, covering me with the big piece of fabric.
âThank you, Sunghoonâ I said, turning over to attempt to catch some sleep. He set up a little bed on the floor with a blanket and a pillow right next to the bed and layer down as well.
After sometime of just listening to the sound of the crickets outside, the quiet noises of the street, cars passing by, the occasional chirp of a bird. The atmosphere was rather peaceful, comfortable almost. I couldn't help the small smile forming on my face as I lay my head on my arm.
My brain kept drifting away from sleep, my thoughts constantly drifting back to Sunghoon. My heart rate was rising with every second that passed, I tried desperately to calm myself down, not wanting to give any indication that I was starting to get aroused. The more I listened to the sounds outside, the more I felt the overwhelming desire to be wrapped up in his arms. Just to feel him hold me.
I sigh deeply, rolling over onto my side and facing him. The soft glow of moonlight illuminating the entire room, casting light patterns on his sleeping features. If this was any other day, I would definitely stare at him until dawn, taking in every minute detail of him.
I scooted over to the edge of the bed, just close enough for me to nudge Sunghoon with my foot. âHoon, are you awakeâ I whispered.
His eyes opened slowly, adjusting to the brightness of the moonlight leaking through the blinds. âYeahâ he clears his throat. âWhy?â
âCan you lay with me?â I whispered again.
He stared at me for a second, trying to understand what was going through my mind. Eventually, he crawled onto the bed, lying down next to me. His body was hot against mine, making goosebumps erupt throughout my skin, but the feeling was comforting nevertheless. We laid like that in silence for a few moments, simply enjoying each other's presence.
Eventually, it became too awkward and I had to move closer into Sunghoon, cuddling up next to him. âI like thisâ I say quietly, resting my head in the crook of his neck, inhaling his faint scent. He chuckled slightly, positioning himself to where his fingers could comb though my hair.
I mumble, wrapping my arm around his torso. His fingers stopped their ministrations then, hesitating for a moment. I looked up at him from my position on his chest, curious as to what made him stop. I met his deep brown eyes that were focused solely on me. His gaze was soft, yet intimidating at the same time. Slowly, carefully, he lifted my head off his body and held it between his hands. Then he brought his lips to meet mine softly.
He pulled me in closer, gently running his fingertips along my jawline, making my heartbeat pick up in pace. His kisses were slow and sweet, the most tender kiss I've ever had. After several seconds of pure bliss, he pulled away slowly, watching me as if waiting for some sort of reaction. When my eyes fluttered open I met with his eyes, gazing deeply into each othersâ. A smile formed on my lips, making Sunghoon lean in to reconnect our lips again.
He placed his hands on the sides of my neck, holding me close to him, deepening the kiss, our tongues intertwining in a passionate dance. Our bodies pressed closely together, moving together rhythmically. His hands lifted up my oversized shorts and began roaming across my bare thighs, tracing up the hem of my shirt. We kept getting tangled in each otherâs clothing as we continued kissing.
He reached my breasts, pushing up my sports bra to give them an affectionate squeeze, causing me to gasp in response. My hands moved down from his shoulders and ran up the backs of his arms to his neck, pulling on his short hairs slightly. Pulling on the strands of hair caused him to release a low growl and deepen the kiss, pulling his tongue into my mouth. Suddenly I felt his teeth graze my bottom lip, causing me to whimper slightly at the unexpected pain. When he released my lower lip, he sucked on it, sucking on it harder and harder with his sharp canine teeth. âFuckâŠâ I moan, gripping tightly onto the ends of his dark brown locks.
He took the opportunity to slide his hands under my shirt, rubbing his thumbs over my nipples lightly, causing my stomach muscles to tense up involuntarily. A slight smirk crept onto his lips as he noticed this, but then he proceeded to push the crop top further up on my shoulders before placing soft gentle kisses along my collar bone. He sprinkled kissed on my shoulders and chest and then moved down towards my waistline, placing soft soft kisses along my belly button. His hand started to work its way downwards, slowly caressing the insides of my thighs.
He latched one of my nipples into his mouth, gently suckling the tight swollen bud of flesh with his teeth and tongue. As his hand reached down and slid his middle finger along the underside of my left thigh, causing me to grind against his hand.
He trailed his hand back up to the bottom of my shirts and bunched it up in his hand âCan I take this off?â he leaned next to my ear and whispered. My breath hitched at how sensual he sounded.
âPleaseâ I managed to speak out. He didnât reply immediately, only gave me a reassuring smile before pulling it over my head, only leaving my bra. His lips found their way back up to mine, sending a surge of electricity through me. His hands worked their way to bottom of my bra, lifting it up and throwing it to the side as well. The cool air on my bare stomach and chest suddenly sent tingles all over my body, sending shivers down my spine and goosebumps all over my skin. He smiled at my reaction, continuing to caress my inner thigh.
âIs it okay if I take these off too?â he whispered, grazing the waistband of my shorts.
I let go of his arms and nodded my head yes, watching his expression change from relaxed to excited. I watched him pull those off and discard them as well, leaving only my thong on. âI hope this is okayâ he smiled. He was still looking at me with those intense eyes, making it difficult for me to breathe properly.
He removed the last piece of clothing from me, both my spandex and the shorts he gave me, revealing my beautiful skin and perfectly plump curves underneath. He took a few seconds to appreciate every inch of my body before sliding his slim fingers between my legs. Instinctively my knees fell apart slightly, allowing him access to my core which caused his eyes to darken even more. As he gently traced circles around my bud, sending me into complete ecstasy, I moaned loudly, moaning in pleasure as my hips began grinding into his finger tips.
âGod, youâre so prettyâ he whispered, trailing kisses along my cheek. I bit my bottom lip to suppress the moans coming out of my mouth as he continued to stroke the wetness inside of my thighs. âSo perfect.â
He spread my wetness all over his fingers and slid one finger inside of my desperate hole. At first, he started slowly, his thumb circling my clit while his middle finger slid in and out of my warm opening, slowly increasing the amount of pressure until I was gripping down onto his fingers with all of my strength. He increased the speed of his movements, adding another finger, pumping them hard into me. I closed my eyes and arched my back, trying my best to keep a good grip on his fingers.
âShit, youâre so wet angelâ he groans. He took his hand away to pull off his own shorts, with his boxers. His dick spring free, tip raging and dripping with precum. It was big, a lot bigger than I had expected.
I take all of his length into my fist as he continues contact with my folds. âFuck, that feels good, babyâ he says under his breath. I collect spit in my mouth and layer his tip and slide my hand up and down slowly.
I feel a familiar knot forming in my stomach as he keeps a consistent pace pumping his finger into my gushing pussy. âAgh yessâ I moan on his cock, feeling the burning sensation building up. He leans down to place a tender kiss on the back of my shoulder, his warm breath fanning my sensitive skin, causing my back arch even higher. "Let go babygirl"he murmurs against my shoulder.
I let my hand rest against his erection, stroking him slowly, feeling the tip get longer by the moment. Soon enough, I can no longer contain myself as I let the orgasm rip out of me. His name came spilling out of my mouth, followed by a loud moan âFuck Sunghoon, just like that.â I continue to hold on to him as the wave of pleasure takes over me, feeling my muscles start to seize up and my vision starting to blur.
As I'm regaining my composure, he pulls out of me, bringing his fingers up to his mouth. âYou taste so good, princessâ he praises, with sweat droplets forming in his forehead.My face turns red with embarrassment. I cover my face with my palms as I try to control my breathing. Sunghoon chuckles and grabs my wrists, pulling my hands away from my blushing face and places them on his cheeks instead. âDonât be embarrassed, babygirl. That was hotâ he says. My blush gets stronger by the second.
âLet me get you cleaned upâ he suggested, getting out of the bed to go to his bathroom where he kept his extra cloths. He came back with a small smile on his face. He runs the rag between my legs and said âI am really happy you decided to spend the nightâ
âMe too Sunghoonâ my smile only visible by the moonlight. He went back into the bathroom to put the cloth into the dirty clothes hamper.
âNow come hereâŠâ He brings his lips to meet mine once more. He wraps his arms around my sore body, making my face bury into his chest. Our bare skin resting against eachother was so relaxing. His skin was soft, and he was perfectly toned to my liking. He runs his fingers through my hair and begins to massage my scalp, making my whole body tremble. âItâs really late, sweetheart, letâs get some restâ he whispers and kisses my forehead, then rests his chin on the top of my head. As I lay there in Sunghoons embrace, feeling the warmth radiating off him, my eyes gradually fall shut.

so high school | đđđ
àšà§ pairing: lee heeseung x fem!reader àšà§ word count: 6.8k àšà§ genre: fluff, smut àšà§ tags: basketballplayer!heesung, nerd!reader, tutor!au, high school au, oral (f + m receiving), penetration (all characters are of age!), light choking àšà§ synopsis: You and your boyfriend are complete opposites on paperâyou, the girl hidden inside a book, and Heeseung, the star of the basketball teamâbut it feels so right every time youâre together.
Heeseung at the free-throw line, certain he will make the basket and win the championship, turns to look at you in the stands. The sounds of his coach, taunts from the opposing team, encouragement of his teammates, and commotion of the final game of the season all fade into the background. To him, all that matters besides the ball in his hands is you.
You, amongst the others in the crowd with their hearts in their mouths, have no fears for your boyfriend. The star player whoâs going to make history has never given you doubts before in his talents. All you can do is smile, incredibly proud and incredulous at the thought that he is all yours and nobody elseâs.
Itâs almost unimaginable how the two of you found each other, coming from completely different worlds. But like all stories, similar to the ones youâve read since childhood, the story of you and Heeseung has a clear beginningâŠ
AUGUST
âDo you ever stop toâI donât knowânot read?â Jungwon asks, jotting down notes in his notebook.
You giggle and flip the page. âItâs the last book on Choiâs summer reading list. Besides,â you retort, looking directly at your best friend, âhow else would I be able to read and still remember what you just said to me if I didnât practice?â
âFuck off.â You lightly knock his shoulder with yours.
Even though it was still very early in the school year, you still had a lot to concentrate on with the month coming to an end. Like the first novel Mrs. Choi selected on her extensive reading list. You planned to discuss it with the members of the schoolâs book club, your notes already tucked in your backpack for todayâs Friday meeting.
Now, sitting with Jungwon in the hallway as you eat your lunch, your focus is solely on finishing the last fifty pages of the last book in the list Mrs. Choi created. Jungwon closes his notebook and gets up from his spot next to you. âAlright, I gotta head to Chem. Iâll see you after school!â With a wink, he runs down the hallway and disappears down the corner.
Who you donât expect to pop up next to disturb the sudden quiet of the surrounding area is Lee Heeseung, star shooting guard for the schoolâs basketball team. You never spoke to him before, but his reputation and familyâs legacy preceded him. His brother was the shooting guard for the team years ago, breaking numerous records before he graduated. Now, Heeseungâs definitely filling his brotherâs shoes and then some.
As a person, however, you know nothing about the boy at all. This year, though, you shared the same English class with Mrs. Choi. She cared little for his extracurriculars or persona around campus; what mattered to her was the effort of her students and the quality of the classwork.
Heeseung passes you by on his way towards his destination, not sparing a glance. You sit attentively as he knocks on Mrs. Choiâs classroom door.
She answers after a moment, a somber smile on her lips. âWhat can I do for you, Mr. Lee?â
He clears his throat and asks her, âYou saw my message and Iââ
âI am aware, Mr. Lee. My response still stands. Is there something else you need?â Mrs. Choi sees you out of the corner of her eye, but she doesnât acknowledge your snooping.
âI will do anything to correct my last assignment. Please,â Heeseung begs.
âMr. Lee, the cutoff for submissions was last week. Iâm sorry, but your grade is final.â She sighs and looks at her watch.
âThereâs nothing I can do to bring it up before the first game?â Heeseung asks, his voice growing thin from his frustration. Heâs not rude, but clearly disappointed he isnât getting his way with his big eyes and pleading words.
âHow about this? Iâll tell Coach Sung youâre working on a paired project to make up the grade.â
âPerfect.â Heeseung breathes a sigh of relief before he takes in the rest of her sentence. âWait, whoâs my partner?â
Mrs. Choi extends her arm out to point in your direction. Immediately, you want to tuck yourself in your book and hide. You did not intend for your interest in their conversation to put you right in the middle of it, and now you wish you hadnât feigned curiosity at all.
âSheâs one of my best students, so youâre in great hands.â She turns her head so both you and Heeseung can hear her. âIâll send both of you the information for the project later today.â
You didnât notice Heeseung had kept his focus on you until you broke your stare-off with Mrs. Choi. Her lips are upturned in a secret smirk when you turn your attention to him.
Heeseung isnât bad to look at, the definition of his muscles peeking out of his shirt in multiple places and his brown hair falling into his face. Each piece of his physical being represents the epitome of a Greek godâs form. But the fact neither of you had ever interacted up to this point is what scares you more than his intimidatingly good looks.
When Mrs. Choi gently closes the door, Heeseung awkwardly walks over to your position, towering over you. Ironically, his presence physically embodies your feelings towards him, this stranger now being shoved into your life.
âIâm Heeseung.â
You give him a close-lipped smile and extend your hand out to him, your name leaving your lips immediately. Displaying fake confidence, you hope he canât tell how terrified you are.
His eyes brighten when his hand touches yours. You stand up, hand still in his, and the feeling of his palm against yours causes you to fumble your next words. âS-so I guess I should give you my number. I mean so once we get the assignmentââ
Heeseung smirks. âUsually girls flirt a little more before asking for my number.â
You scoff and tuck your book closer. âI was offering to give you mine, actually. For educational purposes.â
The noise of his laughter fills the small corridor. âRight.â
You roll your eyes, suddenly feeling annoyance creeping under your skin. âWell, if itâs that hard to swap information, you can find me after school in the library.â You walk away, but Heeseung follows quickly behind.
âI have practice once the last bell rings.â
You look at him with serious eyes, not bothering to stop your stride towards the stairs. âTell Coach you canât make it.â
âAre you nuts?â Heeseung says, eyes wide.
You smirk. âYou have to get your grade up to play, right?â
You watch the clock in the library with scrutiny. Members of the book club have been gone for half an hour, but you chose to stay behind. School let out an hour ago, and yet youâre still holding out hope Heeseung will come. But every minute that goes by proves you have to face facts: youâre now forced to collaborate with a stereotypical jock.
Mr. Kim, the head librarian, puts the disorganized books on the shelves as you tap your pencil on the table. âWaiting for someone? You donât usually stick around this late,â Mr. Kim says with a smile.
You grin back, the sentiment not reaching your eyes. âYou could say that.â
After another ten minutes of silence, you give up. You begin packing up your belongings, shaking your head and mumbling to yourself the entire time. Curse your interest in the guy and his lack of care for his academics. No wonder his grade was in the tank already. What was the point of athletics if he didnât have other prospects to fall back on?
Just as youâre walking out of the library, Heeseung runs into you. Sweatâs dripping from his forehead and his breaths are labored. Clearly, he chose basketball over your project. You want to punch him for putting you both in this position.
âI swear I was going to blow off practice,â Heeseung says, but he can see your doubt in his words on your face.
âSure. How about this? Figure out how to do the project on your own.â You press your body into his to push him out of your way. He follows in suit and rubs the spot you shoved, pretending to be wounded.
It only fuels your ire. Youâve only spoken to the jerk twice and youâre already tired of him treating every word you say and feeling you have like a joke. âIs failing that amusing to you?â
Heeseungâs expression immediately goes cold. âIâm not failing.â
âSure. So Choiâs just doing this to torture you.â
He weighs his response in his mind before answering. âI may not be perfect, but Choi is really hard on grading.â
âThat first assignment was just about what your future looks like after high school.â You push your backpack over your arm. âExcuse her for thinking you had plans outside of throwing a ball around a field.â
That laugh of his may just be the end of your life. He chuckles hard and puts a hand out to stop you. âFirst of all, thatâs football.â He tries to make you look at him directly, but you refuse, too angry to give into what he wants.Â
He continues anyway. âSecond, basketball is my life. Past, present, future, okay? Without it, I donât even know where Iâd be.â
His voice is sincere, more honest than itâs been before. Regardless, your understanding and disappointment is evident. âDonât you think that thatâs the problem?â
âIt hasnât been one before. Suddenly I say it out loud and itâs an issue?â Heeseungâs voice raises a decibel, clearly agitated and back to his cold exterior.
If he wants to fight about this, youâre game.
âNo,â you say, matching his vocal level. âThe issue is that your focus is solely on basketball when thereâs more important things in life than a dumbass court and sweaty guys trying to make touchdowns.âÂ
âYouâre mixing up your sports analogies, angel.â Heeseung steps closer, testing your boundaries. Your chest heaves up and down, your breath labored. You may just slap him if he gets closer.
âYou know what I mean.â
âAre you going to help me or not?â A fraction of his expression slips. His eyes challenge you in both irritation and anxiety. The bravadoâs merely a mask for the fear that heâll lose the one thing he wants the most in this world. And did you have it in you to be the reason he couldnât have it?
You sigh and rub your palm across your forehead. âTomorrow, meet me at the marketside pier. 8 AM. Take it or leave it.â
He releases a humorless chuckle. âYouâre not gonna make this easy are you?â
âNot on your life.â
Heeseung is there at one of the pierâs wooden picnic tables with his materials sprawled out when you arrive at 7:45. You werenât expecting for him to be there on time, much less earlier than you. The sun reflects off of his hair, turning the brown curls almost orange. Like the first time you saw him, you canât help but be reminded that he is painstakingly attractive.
You give him a shy smile and put your backpack down next to you.
âI can tell youâre surprised,â Heeseung says with a small smile.
âA bit, yeah.â You unzip your bag to grab your English textbook. âI thought on the weekends you typically doâŠâfitness stuff.ââ He laughs at your air quotes.
âWell, to be honest, I wake up at 6 AM every morning for drills with my dad.â
Your eyes go wide. âWow.â
âYeah. Like you said, my sole focus is on that damn ball,â Heeseung says, opening his own textbook. âBut I want to change that.â
âSo you can keep playing,â you remind him, teasing the poor guy.
âHalf true,â Heeseung says. âBut I shouldnât have left you hanging, yesterday.â
You nod. âI appreciate your apology.â You grab a pencil from your bag, pushing on the eraser until the lead pops up. âAnd I shouldnât have been so judgmental. You have to be good at stuff besides basketball, even if itâs not studying.â
âHey! Iâm doing well in all my other classes, thank you very much.â You both share a minute of laughter. âBut, to be honest, I do like to sing.â
You roll your eyes. âOkay, Troy Bolton.â
âFor real! One day, Iâll take you to karaoke. I wonât make fun of you if you canât keep up with me.â
âOkay, weâll see.â You direct his focus back on to the page. âNow, onto Shakespeare.â
SEPTEMBER
Although Heeseung took his sweet, laborious time to translate and understand Shakespeareâs old English, the project went off without a hitch. Mrs. Choi was even surprised herself, in disbelief you pulled such an expansive and well-thought analysis out of the quintessential jock.
Now, it seemed the best next step to keep Heeseung on the right track was to sit him right next to you. Your initial partnership continued to benefit him in both his success in English and focus on academics, possibly for the first time in his high school career.
Better than that, he may have found a new friend in you that he wouldnât have had otherwise.
By the end of one Tuesday class, Heeseung asks you to have lunch with him and his friends, a request that makes your previous seating buddy in English, Yujin, freak out.
Both her and Jungwon corner you on your way out when you tell them the news.
âNo fucking way,â she whispers excitedly, slapping you on the back with vigor.
âThat hurt,â you moan.
âAre you prepared?â Jungwon asks, smirking.
âPrepared for what?â
âThe lionâs den, dude! Youâre gonna be with not just his douche friends, but also the cheerleaders, other sports playersâŠbe prepared for the worst,â Jungwon grumbles.
âOh shut up, Won!â Yujin threatens to hit him too, but he retracts. âHave fun on your pseudo first date.â
âItâs not a date!â
By the time lunch comes around, you hold yours with shaky hands, searching the lunch courtyard for the jockâs table. You usually sat with Jungwon or Yujin in the hallway of the English department to eat. Now, youâre a small fish in a big pond, waiting to be eaten alive.
Was it, in fact, a date, like your friends hypothesized? Did you have to try and impress Heeseung more than normal? Did you want Heeseung to take you on a date, real or fake, to begin with?
"Hey!"
Heeseung waves you over with a confident but over-exaggerated arm, flapping it wildly so you notice. He didn't need to do that, though; you could pick out his voice in any crowd.
You walk over with a smile and sit down, feeling small next to the strangers you had not met until this moment. The basketball team's not unwelcome, but they are awkward at your sudden presence at their usual lunch table, even if Heeseung made it known beforehand that you would be hanging out with them to eat.
He says your name and introduces you to his friends. "And that's Sunghoon, Jeongsong, and Jaeyun." You recognize the last two, Jay and Jake. Jake, the strikingly blonde one, has Chemistry with you this year. He smiles and tips his soda can at you in acknowledgement.
"Hee was telling us youâve been saving him this term in English. Choi can be a pain in the ass, am I right?" Sunghoon and Jeongsong share a laugh, but you bristle at the comment.
"Not really," you say. "Choi sponsors my book club, so we have a good relationship. I think that's why she wanted me to whip Heeseung into shape in the first place." You elbow Heeseung in the side, and he grins in response.
"She's probably right."
"Book club kid, huh?" Jake asks. "Haven't been one of those since elementary school."
Jake's comments make the entire team laugh. Your cheeks turn pink and Heeseung takes a sip from his drink, his posture stiffening in the process.
"It's not a bad thing though," Jake interjects amidst their laughter. "Books are fun."
"A bit nerdy, though," Sunghoon comments.
A girl next to Sunghoon smacks him hard in the arm, but he just pokes his tongue at her.
Your anxiety spikes sitting there with all of these people, your gut feelings a reminder that theyâre all a part of Heeseungâs world, not yours.
You clear your throat and stand up from the table. âI forgot to say, Hee, I have to do something for Choi anyway.â Heeseungâs face turns down at the corners. The only audible response you receive is from Jay and Sunghoon in the form of snickers.
âRun along, pet,â Sunghoon comments with a smirk.
You hope your eyes give the offense you wonât bother saying out loud. Fuck off, asshole.
When you make it to your usual lunch spot, Yujin and Jungwon are surprised to see you walking down the hallway.
âWhat happened?â Yujin asks.
âExactly what Won said was going to happen,â you confess, sitting down in a criss-cross position beside her. âNow give me your chips.â
When the end of the day comes around, Heeseung catches you on your usual trek to the bus. âYouâre forgiven, by the way.â
You furrow your eyebrows. âWhat did I do?â
âYou left me alone with my shithead teammates! I needed you there for backup, yâknow.â He smirks and grabs your backpack from your shoulder to put around his arm. âIâm sorry about them. Sunghoon, mostly.â
âCanât believe youâre friends with that guy,â you mumble.
âHeâs the only one who Iâm not friends with, truthfully. The others are cool. Theyâre just not used to new people.â
âI never would have guessed.â
Heeseungâs laugh is hearty, with a dazzling smile to match. You can almost forget the heap of embarrassment you felt earlier when you look at him like this, carefree and youthful.
âAnyway, let me give you a ride,â he offers, pointing to the senior parking lot. His car is freshly washed, its coat of paint identical to the schoolâs colors of blue with silver accents.
âWhat will your friends say?â you ask with a fake gasp.
âFuck them. Besides, youâre also one of my friends. Now letâs go.â He takes your hand to walk in the direction of his car, not releasing your palm until youâre at his passenger side door.
As you give him directions, your mind goes back to the labels you had been running through in your mind all day. Were you Heeseungâs friend? Yes. Did you want to be more? Surely he didnât just ask anyone to have lunch with him and his friends if he didnât have other intentions, right? So, in that case, did yours match his?
A part of you wants to say yes, but the rational piece keeps you in check. Itâs ridiculous to expect more than a friendship. How could you when it was so obvious your worlds were so far from each other, your friendship a simple fluke? You were grateful for his presence in your life, knowing without him it would be a bit darker, but would it last?
Yet here you were. Sitting happily in his car, hair blowing in the wind as his thumb grazes the outside of your hand, you try to enjoy all the time you do have together.
OCTOBER
âThis is ridiculous!â
âCome on, just try it!â
âWhen did I ever say I was good at sports?â You groan, holding the ball in your hands with nervous fingers. The basketball court at your local park is occupied only by you and Heeseung, but it feels as though thereâs a thousand people in the metal stands watching you, waiting for you to mess up.
âYou said if I passed the last test you would let me show you how to make a free throw.â Heeseung has his hands in his pockets, his letterman jacket flapping in the autumn wind.
âIf I suck at this, youâre never going to talk to me again. Just watch.â You try to dribble the ball across the court, but it falls between your legs before you can travel any further.
Heeseung puts his face behind his hand, clearly chuckling to himself. You scoff at him and the response you saw coming the second he put the ball in your hands. âSee? I told you you would think Iâm embarrassing!â
He raises his hands in defense. âIâm sorry, okay? Itâs just cute, thatâs all.â
ââCuteâ is probably the nicest way you could say Iâm embarrassing.â You kick the basketball in his direction. He catches it without any effort, his face still shaped in a state of enjoyment.
âI said cute because I meant cute, you dork.â He steps to the free-throw line and motions for you to join him. You do, grumbling and grunting the entire way.
âNow, you have to relax. The only way you have half a shot at making the basket is if you stop tensing up.â He hands you the ball again and steps behind you.
He puts his hands on your hips. his palms soft against your hoodie. You can practically feel the heat of his skin through the material of your clothing, and you hope he canât tell how much your heartbeat has spiked from him being so close to you.
âNext thing is to bend your knees. They canât be locked up.â You listen to his words, trying not to focus on how his body is making yours react. You may be imagining it, but even his voice sounds a bit breathless from the small distance between yourself and him.
His lips are ghosting over your ear when he says, âNow shoot.â
You release the ball from your hands, hoping the angle of your throw and Heeseungâs directions will prove youâre partially competent.Â
And sure enough, the basket makes it in a single whoosh. You turn in Heeseungâs grasp, releasing a happy cheer. âThat was amazing!â
You feel the rush of the shot in your veins, but suddenly the only thing that makes your body hum in pleasure is the sudden crash of Heeseungâs lips against yours.
Unsure how to react, you stand there frozen in place as his mouth moves on its own accord. But slowly, surely, happily, you fall deeply into his embrace. You wrap your arms around his shoulders and feel the press of his tongue against your mouth, begging for entrance.
You comply, letting the feeling of him and the thrill of this private moment in both of your worlds fill you to the brim with quiet pleasure and happiness.
[LHS] Can we talk, please?
[LHS] Did I do something wrong??
[LHS] IDC if you donât respond. Iâll keep texting until you say somethingâŠ
[LHS] Donât leave me hanging :(
You sigh and throw your phone to the other side of the bed, tucking your comforter closer to your chest. Deciding to stay home from school was probably not the best way to handle your problems, but just because youâre smart doesnât mean youâre sensible all the time.
This weekendâs excursion with Heeseung was beautiful, no doubt. But the fears continued to creep in with little regard for how happy he made you that day or all the days that came before it. Would how he felt about you last any longer than his basketball season? Did he entertain this simply for the fact that it was entertainment and nothing more?Â
The thoughts had been too much when you said goodbye to him on your doorstep with another hasty, giddy kiss and all the hours following it. Maybe you were self-sabotaging, but it was better to manage expectations now than be crushed in the aftermath.
When Yujin calls you during lunch, you have half a mind to ignore it. You answer anyway to avoid your friends thinking something drastic happened.
âHello,â you mumble, the effects of your late morning nap hitting you.
âDude, Heeseungâs on a tear today. He even asked Jungwon where you were, and I didnât even think he knew the kid existed. What the hell happened on Saturday?â
Before you can respond, you hear the sound of your doorbell. âI gotta go. Iâll tell you later.â You hang up, hastily grabbing your fuzzy robe before running downstairs.
You donât bother looking through the peephole to see who it is, but you curse yourself for not doing so when youâre confronted with Heeseung. Heâs a sweaty and panting mess, but he doesnât care for his appearance. His face morphs into relief when he sees you staring back at him.
âThank God,â he says before stepping closer to you. He runs his hand over your forehead, frowning. âYouâre not sick.â
You shake your head.
âSo, you just ignore me all weekend and then donât show up to school today?â
You sigh. âI didnât know what to say when I saw you.â
He gulps, his Adam's apple bobbing. âSo you chose not to see me at all? Was kissing me that terrible?
âNo!â You run a frustrated hand through your hair, the spot in your hallway suddenly too cramped. You push him back outside and close the door behind you. âI donât regret it at all. And Iâd do it again if I could.â
Heeseung smirks at that, clearly happy with your response. âSo, whatâs the problem?â
âThe problem is that when you get bored of me, things wonât go back to normal for me like they will for you, Hee. You may think this is a game butââ
Heeseungâs sudden laugh is marked with a bitterness. His eyes grow serious, so much so your words stop short because of his stone expression
âDo you think that little of me?â
Your body tenses at his words, unsure how to respond. You have never thought of him as lesser than once, not since getting to know him. But maybe only looking at your feelings regarding your relationship compromised his own in the process.
He steps closer, your faces an inch apart. âTwo months ago, I didnât realize how much my life was going to change because of you. All I thought about before was basketball. And now, youâre one of the only things outside of that damn game that matters to me. When I havenât talked to you or seen you for too long itâs like thereâs this rock in my gut that I canât get rid of. I kissed you because I wanted to, not for fun or because itâs this momentary thing.
âSo, if you still think Iâm going to get bored of you in a few days or weeks or months, then you really arenât as smart as I thought you were, angel. Because Iâm not going anywhere.â
Breathless would be too small of a word to describe how his speech affects you. You feel the same buzz of his kiss from a few days throughout your entire body from his words alone. It makes every worry and fear that has plagued you evaporate, replaced with his promises and all the reasons you should jump in headfirst without another thought.
So you do.
You kiss him hard, crashing into his lips and hoping all of the feelings he harbors reflect in the actions of your mouth. You hold onto him with your hands on his neck and the smoothness of your lips in a beautiful rhythm with each other.
Whatever happens next, you know thereâs no turning back now.
NOVEMBER
âAnd Sim, our prime point-guard, passes to Lee. Lee has ten seconds to make another three pointer and win the game. Will he do it? Time to find out!â Kim Sunwoo screams into the microphone, broadcasting the highlights of the semi-final game to the many listeners not attending in-person.
Lucky for you, you have the perfect spot in the stands to watch Heeseung make the winning basket and lead the team to victory.
The crowd roars when your boyfriend secures the teamâs spot in the championship game. His teammates lift him up above their heads and shoulders, chanting his name and holding him with all of their strength. Heeseung immediately searches the crowd for you, his excitement fueling his newfound focus.
When he does see you, clapping your hands and cheering with the rest of the bystanders, he kisses the inside of his palm and shoots it in your direction like heâs making another basket. Your heart squeezes at the gesture, but you only blush and wink.
Ever since that day on your doorstep, you canât seem to separate yourself from him or the feelings he stirs up inside of you. The thought and reality of not seeing or hearing from him for too long immediately dampens your spirits, just like Heeseung described to you when he confessed. Jungwon calls you âlovesick foolsâ every time you both are in his presence, but itâs not that. The love you feel for your boyfriend is one that strengthens every sense, impulse, and desire. Without it and him, thatâs when you feel the weakest. And every time Heeseung smiles at you or holds you close, you can tell he feels the same.
Whether your worlds were the exact same or as different as they possibly could be, you both made your own perfectly fit for just the two of you.
The outside world has to creep in every once in a while, though.
At the end of the night, Heeseungâs arm is wrapped perfectly around you as you walk. You discuss your shared plans for the night and subsequent weekend since your parents are away at a work conference. Heeseung stops short when he sees his father waiting at his car with crossed arms.
âGood job, Hee,â He says first and foremost. âSaw you lost a bit of steam in the third quarter, though. Weâll have to do some more conditioning before the final.â
And there it was. The judgment you saw so often in conversations between Heeseung and his father that made you ache for the boy you loved. As his father, he shouldâve been proud to see his sons succeeding, one of them off and playing for a world-renowned team and the other on his way there. Instead, all they received was judgment. It wasnât your place, but you couldnât wait for the day Heeseung stood up to him.
âAt least I made the winning basket, right?â Heeseung shrugs off the criticism with a laugh and holds you closer. âWe have to go eat, soââ
âOf course.â His father moves out of your way. âLovely to see you again, darling,â He says to you with a small smile as he opens the passenger door for you. You return his greeting, suddenly uncomfortable with how close he is.
On your drive to your house, you try to help Heeseung destress with a hand on his thigh. âDonât let him get to you,â you say sadly.
He smiles and gives you a knowing stare. âIâve been dealing with him my whole life. He doesnât have that power anymore.â He takes your hand from his thigh to hold it tightly in his own palm. âBesides, Iâm one step closer to the championship and I got my girl next to me. Nothingâs getting in the way of my good night.â
You set your backpacks down at the door when you step inside your house. Heeseung follows you to the kitchen. While youâre finding the flier with the number of your favorite takeout restaurant, Heeseung presses his lips to your neck. The trail of his kisses going from the back of your ear to the start of your collarbone makes you shiver.â
âHee,â you warn him. âWe wonât be able to eat if you keep distracting me.â
âFood is the second priority,â he responds, lips feathering your skin. âRight now, we need to celebrate the championship.â
âThe championship is still three weeks away.â
âIf we both know Iâm going to win, whatâs the point of delayed gratification?â He pulls the sleeve of your shirt down to expose the top of your shoulder, kissing that area too to make your body thrum with pleasure.
âSpeaking of thatâŠâ You turn to face Heesung, pressing your back against the counter. âI guess we can celebrate something tonight besides your impending win.â
Heeseung raises an eyebrow.
âI got early acceptance to Sky.â
Heeseungâs eyes immediately light up at your announcement. He pulls you in by the waist and spins you around the tiny space between your kitchen island and the fridge.
When the topic of college came up, it was as good a time as any for the two of you to discuss your future plans with each other. As fate would have it, Heeseung planned to play for Sky Universityâs basketball team next year, and you were waiting on your official acceptance letter when you both started dating.
Now, Heeseung would have the two most important things to him in the next chapter of his life. The boyâs over the moon, as any other person would be.
Heeseung lifts you over his shoulder, immediately heading in the direction of the stairs to take you to your bedroom. He laughs off your mock protest.
He knows for certain heâs in love with you. It may not be the perfect time to say it, especially before heâs about to ravish you, but the perfect time will come when it feels right.
He doesnât say it when he strips you bare for only his eyes as he kisses you senseless, shocked and grateful your body is for him and him alone to see and cherish. He doesnât say it as you kiss every inch of his bare chest to send him into a rambling mess of praises and curses.
Somehow, stupidly, the words slip out when your mouth is wrapped around his cock, tongue flat against the underside of his tip as he feels the back of your throat against him.
âFuck, I love you so much.â
The air stills, both your bodies going rigid at the sudden confession that has just left his lips. But, instead of running scared, you take your mouth off of him and stare deeply into his eyes, smiling wide. âWhatâd you say?â
Heeseung breathes out a sigh of relief, suddenly taking your face in his hands and kissing you deeply. âI love you. Iâve loved you since the second I saw you in that hallway. I just didnât know it yet.â
You giggle and press another kiss to his lips. He sees a tear leave your eye, and he wipes it away gently with his thumb. âI love you, too, Heeseung.â
You fall back into a steady rhythm of kissing and touching, Heeseungâs hands roaming the skin of your stomach, the swell of your breasts, and the cleft between your thighs, making you moan.
âLet me show you how much I love you,â Heeseung whispers against your lips.
He lays you flat on your back, kissing what areas he hasnât touched yet with his hands. He needs you to know, in every moment, he chooses you and will never stop choosing to be with you.
If he had to make the choice to either give up the game or you, he would choose the former in a heartbeat. His dad, his friends, and even fate may say itâs young love and you havenât been in his life as long as basketball has, but they donât see him the way you do.
Even if he doesnât say it out loud, he knows he doesnât have to.Â
When Heeseung finally presses his lips to your clit, kissing the nub with adoration, your legs shake at the contact. You instantly run your fingers into his hair. âFuck,â you curse, the word rarely slipping from your lips save for moments like these.
The first time you had been together, Heeseung didnât know exactly how to touch you without being terrified it was too much. But now he knows all the ways to turn you into a beautiful mess.
He licks languidly across your center and through your folds, keeping the perfect pace for you to ride your hips against his mouth. He inserts a finger into your entrance after coating the digit in the arousal already pooling at your center. You, typically so put together, are ready to fall apart at the simple press of his mouth against you.
Heeseung knows he can get you off this way, without question. And most nights, he doesnât mind when youâre the only one who receives pleasure. But tonight, you moan out a request that he canât say no to.
âHeeseung, please. I want you inside me when I come.â He doesnât have to be told what to do twice when itâs the best command heâs heard all night.
He takes your mouth in his, holding your jaw in his hand and slightly applying pressure to the side of your neck. A half-empty moan leaves your lips at the sudden contact. To him, the sounds that you make are their own form of poetry, better than anything youâve read to him all year.
Heeseung quickly grabs a foil packet from your bedside drawer to put on himself, protection being the one thing you canât forget in the midst of your desire for each other. Lining himself up with your entrance, he thinks you could not look more beautiful with your half-lidded eyes and eager hands grabbing onto his hips to finally push him inside of you.
When he does ease in, he swallows the curse prepared to leave your mouth with his lips. Itâs an indescribable feeling, the stretch and pull of your walls taking him in completely. Although youâve been together many times before this night, itâs still a novelty Heeseung does not take for granted.
He takes his time establishing a rhythm, loving the pants and whimpers you emit because of him and for him. He holds his hand on your throat, his thumb going into your mouth for you to wrap your lips around in a lewd manor.
âAh, fuck,â you say as he snaps his hips, filling you to the hilt. âJust like that.â
He feels his orgasm in his gut, threading further up his body as he snaps his hips harder and faster, moving in and out at a faster pace than normal. You donât mind, scratching lines down his back as you cling to him. Youâre both reduced to a heap of I love youâs and satisfied sounds, and it could not be more perfect.
âFuck, Hee, Iâm coming,â you say in the form of a promise, one so precious he wants to hear it every day.
The flutter of your walls around him as you fall apart pushes him to his own end, releasing into the condom with a guttural moan. He kisses you deeply before separating from you, running to the bathroom to throw the remnants of your lovemaking into the toilet and clean himself up.
You hold your arms out to him, ready to have him back by your side. He grins and kisses the crown of your forehead.
âThink about all the nights we can do this next year,â Heeseung whispers into the dark.
âI canât wait,â you respond, pressing a kiss to his sweaty chest. âI love you.â
He grins happily to himself, the words a thousand times more powerful leaving your mouth. âI love you, too, angel.â
With your body curled into his chest, your heartbeats matching in tempo, he thinks no amount of championship wins could compare to the love heâs found in you.
DECEMBER
The basketball feels light as air in Heeseungâs hands, incomparable to the feeling in his chest looking at you. His teammates can tell heâs staring directly at your position in the stands. They wonder how his mind is still so occupied by you, even amongst the sea of spectators waiting for him to either succeed or screw up
Little do they realize, youâre the exact reason heâs going to win the title.
As he looks in your direction, he takes the shot without second-guessing himself. He hears the faint gasps of some attendees and even his coach, but the following swish of the basket in the hoop tells Heeseung all he needs to hear. And all he needs to see is your beautiful, proud face as the gym explodes into cheers.
Youâre the best and truest thing he has in this world. He knows heâs a champion, in both the traditional and figurative sense. With you by his side, heâll always feel like the winner of every game heâll ever play.

Bad Boys Don't Buy Flowers
CEO!BuckyBarnes x Female!Florist!Reader AU
read Steve's story here
summary: Bucky would have never thought, heâd be chasing after a girl. Not when all of them usually fell at his feet. But when he finds himself entangled in a deal born out of a desperate argument with his assistant, he realizes there is nothing he wouldn't do for you: The independent florist who is adamantly dragging him to the homeless shelter every chance she gets. There is just one problem: Bucky doesn't know how to tell you. And the teasing from his friends is certainly not making things easier for him...
a/n: I should be working instead of writing long ass billionaire love stores, but here we are: you and me both... happy it happened and already regretting the tasks we neglected because of it (please enjoy this wholesome piece of imagination - I know it's long, but I hope youâll give it a try nonetheless)
word count: 16.4k đŹ
warnings: play boy behavior/talk, a reader that knows what she wants, Bucky falls first (and hard đ€), mentions of war, injuries, and death (all not applying to Bucky for once), just so much fluff, questioning life choices (angst with happy ending!), smut (this is freaking love making okay?!?!? praise and confessions, dry humping, fingering, multiple orgasms, squirting, touch starved Bucky - in a wayâŠ, sensual and beautiful, protected p in v, cock warming, and aftercare) !MINORS DNI!

"Did you place the order?" Bucky leaned back in Steve's office chair and watched as his friend paced the space with a hand in his pocket.Â
Steve was grinning like an idiot when the answer on the other side satisfied him and Bucky felt a tiny little spark in his chest at the sight. He'd watched his best friend go through life with a default tension in his shoulders for what seemed like forever. All until he found Bambi - a sweet and incredibly clumsy woman who was formerly his maid. But they found each other and Steve had been a happier man ever since.
Bucky was happy for him, too. He was a lot more fun to be around ever since, but it did remind him that Bucky himself had yet to find the one that would make his heart beat faster.Â
It was a ridiculous idea, of course. Bucky was never the one for relationships or long-term commitment in the romantic department. To be honest, he wasn't even sure he was capable of love - not that he needed it, anyway. He had no problem with having a new plaything every other night. It was fun and kept him on his toes.Â
"Perfect. Okay. Thanks, Sharon." Bucky sat up straighter in the chair. "Yeah, next Friday. See you later."
Steve sighed as he slumped on the sofa across the room. He watched the ceiling, looking like a love-drunk schoolboy, even though he tried so hard to conceal it. Bucky knew him too well.
"Dinner is booked.â
âYouâre really doing it huh?"
âYup." There was no doubt in Steveâs answer, but rather a special kind of excitement Bucky rarely felt.
The brunette just nodded as he looked to the ground, the chair swaying as he pushed his knees from one side to the other.Â
Steve just grinned in response. "So when are you gonna let me help you find the one?"
Bucky perked up, amusement seeping through his gaze when he answered his best friend. âMe? No no. Iâm fine."
Steve shrugged. âYou know, thatâs exactly what I said about a year ago."
"No offense, Stevie, but you and I were in vastly different sex universes back then. Iâm getting laid - Iâm aaaaall good." He leaned back with a smug grin and Steve just frowned in response. "You can be as happy as you want but donât start trying to get everyone on the girlfriend train. Thatâs a Rogers and Wilson thing. I donât need that type of commitment."
Steve remained silent as he watched Bucky stand up and head for the door, a thoughtful look on his face when his friend passed him.Â
âLook, Iâm happy for you, truly. I just donât see myself in that type of life.â Buckyâs hand squeezed Steveâs shoulder just as the blonde cocked his head to the side.Â
âNever?â
Bucky winked at him. âYou know I like to live in the present. But speaking of the future... Youâre still up for tomorrow night, right?â
âTomorrow night?"
"Ironbar."
Steveâs eyes widened. âShit. No, I promised Bambi we'd-" Steve stopped when he saw Bucky's eyebrows raise in amusement. â...next time."
Bucky sighed in defeat. "Tell her to leave some Steve time for the rest of us, will ya?" And with a laugh of Steveâs, he shut the office door, walked past Sharonâs desk, then Natashaâs, and then into his own office.
â â â
The clock hand barely struck 8am when another set of files hit Buckyâs desk.Â
Bucky huffed as he watched Natasha stand before him with an amused smile, her hands on her hips that were hugged by a tight pencil skirt. âLooking for something, Boss?â
âNo...â
âSomething like... the invitation to that business dinner on Thursday?â She mused and carefully pulled a piece of paper from the stack between them.Â
Bucky snatched it with a glare. âIt would be much more helpful if you sorted this chaos rather than stand here and be a smartass.â He looked at the invite, the familiar company logo printed in the top right corner. âAnd why are people even sending paper invites anymore? Weâre a security firm,â he sat the paper down and tapped on it with his index finger, âjust shows how desperately they need consulting.âÂ
âDonât blame me for it.â Nat threw her hands in the air. âAnd stop complaining. I know youâre the cyber guy but a couple papers shouldnât faze you. Iâve got more important things to do that donât particularly fall in your area of expertise.â She turned to leave but Bucky stopped her before her heels could reach the threshold.Â
âAre you saying your job is harder than mine?â Bucky watched the mess on his desk, then the computer screen with his calendar and the impending meeting with those jackasses from Hydra Enterprises. There was no way sorting a couple of papers could be worse than Alexander Pierce and his nephew Brock Rumlow. One of them barely knew how to send an E-mail and the other kept subtly asking if it was legal to install cameras in the ladyâs room.Â
âIf youâre referring to your inability to sort a couple files, then yes, I assume you wouldnât last a day with my tasks.âÂ
âNow thatâs bullshit.â
âIs it now?â She raised her left eyebrow with a half-smirk. âI want to see you deal with idiots when scheduling appointments and keeping everyoneâs day structured while also organizing the annual fundraiser.â
Bucky huffed, leaning back and crossing his arms before his chest. He averted his eyes from his assistant and the stupid pile of paperwork in front of him. He really did not want to sort through all of that.Â
âCall me old fashioned but I believe assistants should sort files.â He shrugged, knowing Natasha wouldnât let him off that easily. They had been working together for years, he respected her as much as his other friends. And presenting the fierce redhead with a challenge to get out of some annoying tasks was something he would gladly do.Â
âIâll tell you what. I will sort your papers in my assistant duties.â She made a mockery curtsy - as much as her skirt allowed - and then lifted her finger before the smile could spread on Buckyâs face. âIf... you plan the charity event.â
Bucky was shocked. He didnât expect her to play dirty - well to be fair, it wouldnât be Nat if she werenât teasing a little bit - but still. âYou think you can handle that, boss?âÂ
Bucky closed his mouth and eyed her suspiciously. It couldnât be that hard to do. And certainly would be a nice distraction from the impending meeting of doom as well as the following consulting sessions. He let his head fall back and stared at the ceiling.Â
Was he really going to trade some papers for a whole Gala? That paperwork really sucked. He loved how easily he could wash through files on his computer. Sadly, his programs didnât help much in the analog part of the job.Â
âAre you backing down, Barnes?â Natâs teasing voice rang through to him and he snapped back into his attitude.Â
âNever.â He stood up, fixed his suit, and then reached his hand toward her. Natasha shook it with an evil smirk. âAlways a pleasure doing business with you, Ms. Romanoff.â
And with that, she took the papers from Buckyâs desk and carried them out of his office with a triumphant smile.Â
â â â
It wasnât long before Bucky regretted his decision.Â
What had he been thinking? A Fundraiser... a fucking fundraiser. Bucky couldnât care less about them.Â
Okay, that wasnât true. He deemed charity to be a very important part of society... and economy. There were times in his life when he was close to needing their help as well. And Bucky swore heâd never let that aspect of his story slip from his mind ever. Still, it didnât prevent him from living lavishly and making use of the things he had access to now.Â
Usually, the organization of the charity gala was stuck on Nat and Sharon. Mainly because they had always done an amazing job. The tabloids had only positive things to write about it and always pushed the number before Christmas even higher. Which urged Bucky even more to do just as good of a job this year.Â
There was just one problem.Â
He had no idea how to organize events this size. Bucky could program a software from scratch, hack into classified state files on a bad day. Hell, he could track every personâs phone in New York in his sleep. But he never expected to be overwhelmed by a couple invites and color palettes.Â
Though as little as he knew about his new task, he liked a challenge, and he would most certainly not give Natasha the satisfaction of asking her for a checklist.Â
So, the internet had to do for now. Heâd found a blog by a highly motivated suburban mom, that led with step-by-step instructions on how to plan the perfect event. It might not have been on the scale of what Bucky had to do, but considering his lack of knowledge on the topic, he figured this would do until Natasha snatched the task away from him again.Â
The first thing on the list was to find a date and venue. But since the gala of Shield Protection Services was always held at the same venue, Bucky figured they had booked it indefinitely for the event.Â
Next was to find the perfect florist that âis able to put your vision into extravagant floral arrangementsâ. Yeah... that was another problem.Â
Bucky didnât buy flowers. The only women he deemed important enough in his life to get them were his sister and his mother. And well, both of them had passed away. So, picking the right flowers hadnât been a problem until now. His mother and sister were always enchanted by the bouquets they received when Bucky was younger. Heâd steal them from their neighborâs garden. But since he could grow a beard, Bucky hadnât even touched flowers anymore.
Well, that had to change now.Â
Bucky stepped into the elevator just to be greeted by big round eyes and an even wider smile. âPaying Steve a visit?â Bucky teased with a half smile as he hugged Bambi and then faced the doors.Â
âIâm actually meeting Natasha for lunch,â she shifted from one foot to the other, âI didnât realize she was already at the restaurant... so thatâs where Iâm headed now.â
Bucky chuckled at her slight awkwardness. But it wouldnât be Bambi if she wouldnât miss such a detail.Â
âDo you need a ride? My driverâs waiting for me anyway.â
âTha- yes that would be nice, thank you.â
Bucky just nodded and gestured for her to lead the way when they reached the ground floor.Â
âWhere are you going?â Bambi asked as he stared out the window of the car. They had told the driver where they needed to go. And Since Bucky had no particular destination in mind, it worked out well.Â
âIâm on the hunt for the perfect flower shop to cater to my vision of our charity event.â He chuckled and shook his head at his own words. Heâs never thought heâd say this. Â
Her eyes peered at him with intrigue, a glimmer washing over them when she asked: âAre you taking suggestions?â
Bucky sat up straighter now. âUh, yes. Gladly.â This was easier than he thought.Â
âThere is this wonderful shop in Brooklyn. Itâs called AsGarden on 18th Avenue. You canât miss it, itâs like a breath of fresh air between all those ugly beige buildings. The woman owning it has great taste, she managed to make the perfect bouquet for me without ever seeing me.â She turned forward, a little flustered, âSteve gets me flowers from there sometimes, theyâre my favorite.â
âDid you hear that, Stan?â A victorious smile spread on Buckyâs face as he squeezed Bambiâs shoulder. âNext stop is Brooklyn.â
âAlright, Sir.â
âYou donât know how much easier you just made my life.â Bucky leaned forward and kissed her cheek before the car came to a stop and he bid her goodbye.Â
âIâm glad I could help.â She waved back and then headed into the restaurant.Â
Maybe the event wasnât so difficult after all, Bucky thought as he leaned back in his seat, his legs spreading in satisfaction.
â â â
The cool air snook through your shop when the familiar bell of a customer chimed above the door. Youâd seen many people frequent your shop daily. Women, men, teenagers, elderly. All came from different backgrounds and varying stories in their repertoire. Your store was in the heart of Brooklyn - a bunch of people mixed in this town. And youâd made it your mission to find the perfect flower arrangement for each and every one of them.Â
The man who had set off your little bell this afternoon was different though. A perfectly tailored coat adorned his broad shoulders. The way his hands were tucked in his pockets revealed the expensive-looking suit beneath as well as the toned chest that hid beneath the button-up in vain. His presence oozed money as he sashayed through your shop, carefully grazing delicate pedals with the aura he brought in.Â
He seemed to own the world, but something about him just didnât fit between the colorful flowers surrounding him. If you didnât know any better, he looked a little lost, eyes glassy as they swayed through the sea of colors and shapes soaking in fresh water.Â
âGood afternoon, sir. Can I help you?â
He ripped around, fixed his posture, and approached the cash desk. When his eyes landed on you, he froze. Just for a second, however, and then his jaw snapped into a handsome smile as he leaned forward.Â
âI sure hope so.â His white teeth flashed between his lips before his tongue stroked over them. It was capturing. âThis flower shop has been recommended to me. You wouldnât happen to be the owner?â
âWell actually, I am,â you smiled hiding the pride swelling in your chest from the comment.
âGreat. What is your capacity when it comes to event arrangements?â
âThat depends...â You smiled as the handsome stranger raised his eyebrows in intrigue. âI reckon we have vastly different understandings of what is small and... big.â Your eyes wandered over his expensive coat again. The innuendo was accidental, really, but he seemed to be amused nevertheless.Â
âMy company is hosting its annual charity event in November... at The Glasshouse.â
âSo just as I suspected...â You nodded and strode past him towards the fall flowers.
âPardon me?â
You turned your head towards him and winked. âBigger than I thought.â
âSo?â He approached you with his hands still in his coat pockets and peeked over your shoulder. âCan you do it?â
âTotally.â Then you gestured to the flowers. âDo you have any preferences? I donât have all the flowers in yet, but I recommend going with some soft orange and sage tones... to cater to the season.â
âForgive me, sweetheart, but I am useless when it comes to this kind of stuff. My qualities lie more in the technical aspect of things.â A hand ran through his thick dark hair and the gesture made him look boyish.
âAlright let me rephrase my question then: Do you trust me?â A sly smile sneaked on his face, matching yours.Â
He tipped his head. âMy life is in your hands.âÂ
âGood. Then please write down your details here.â You pushed a form over the counter once you reached it again, and the man just followed you around like a lost dog. You watched as his hand swiftly filled out the free spaces on the paper, curious which company he had been referring to.Â
âWait youâre working for SPS?âÂ
âI own it, sweetheart.â The man adjusted his coat as you tried to look unimpressed. âMy name is James Barnes, but you can call me Bucky.â His hand extended over the shiny countertop until it encased your smaller fingers and his warmth seeped through your body.Â
Buckyâs smile brightened when you revealed your name to him, telling you how beautiful it was, and you began to struggle not to show the effects it had on you. Then he resumed filling out the order and slid it over to you again.Â
âWhat cause are you raising money for this year?â You asked as you sorted the paper into your books, only to be surprised when Bucky seemed a little nervous all of a sudden.Â
You knew Shield Protection Services was a pristine company with reach to people whose powers you could barely comprehend. Whatever they were choosing, it would have a big impact on the change their chosen organization was advocating.Â
âWell, to be honest... we havenât decided yet.â A silly idea hushed through your head at that, but you dismissed it. A company such as Buckyâs would raise sums only big fish could handle. There wasnât space for the things you had in mind.Â
âI hope youâll do so soon, then.â You nodded thoughtfully and ended with a tight-lipped smile.Â
Bucky nodded and smiled, then turned around and headed for the door. But before he could open it, he came back again. You looked up to see a black card held before you.Â
âIâd be happy for suggestions... if you have any in mind.â He shrugged with that cheeky look of his and then left. And you just stood there, dumbfounded, and toying with the ridiculous idea that Bucky Barnes might actually be able to read minds.Â
â â â
âRogers really couldnât make it?â Tony asked as he leaned back in the leather booth of his very own establishment. He tipped his emptied whiskey glass towards the slender redhead at the bar and smiled as she rushed to get his refill ready.Â
âHe promised Bambi to be home...â Bucky trailed off as he watched a customer hit on the waitress - Tiffany he remembered - A pretty thing, but unfortunately incredibly hollow when it came to conversation... not that Bucky looked for anything like it. Â
Tony huffed. âThat woman has him wrapped around her finger!â He liked Bambi, everyone did, he just missed hanging out with his guys.Â
âJust wait until you find the one, Tony,â Sam chimed in with a sly smirk on his face - a hopeful, yet cautious hint as Sam secretly loved the idea of all his friends finally finding the one. He was a romantic, Bucky knew it, even if Sam never actually said it.Â
âMe? I would never give up my glorious bachelor life for one woman. There are way too many things to explore...â
âMark my words, Stark. Weâll look back to this day and laugh about this incredibly jackassy statement. You, too will be finding the one. I just know it.â
Bucky chuckled and tipped his glass on the Table as the bickering of his friends faded into background noise. For some reason, he didnât feel like adding to the conversation. He blamed it on the banality of a conversation both he and Tony had long decided on, but perhaps, it was because for once in his life, he considered taking Samâs side on the topic.Â
It was ridiculous, really, how fast youâd occupied his mind when it came to Samâs comment about finding âthe oneâ. He didnât even know you aside from the âbackground checkâ he conducted after his visit to your shop. That might have covered your personal details, but he still didnât know if you were a dog person or preferred cats, or if you were vegan or vegetarian, or if you considered kids in your future.Â
Bucky cleared his throat and sat up straighter when he felt the fluster creep up his neck. What the hell was happening to him? He wasnât like this at all. Women occupied his mind for about as long as it took for him to make them come undone in his hands. When he was with them, his full attention was on them - he loved them - but heâd never let them control his life. James âBuckyâ Barnes never even considered seeing them twice, let alone thinking about a future with them.Â
Though, to Buckyâs displeasure - or pleasure (he hadnât decided yet) - the thought of seeing you again wasnât uncomfortable to him. On the contrary, he got a weird tingly feeling in his stomach when he remembered the smell of the flowers in your shop and how your delicate fingers carefully picked out the prettiest ones. Bucky sat his drink down with a clink. Maybe heâd had enough alcohol for tonight.
âBarnes, how come youâre not defending me here? Have you grown soft or something? Do you have a girl we donât know about?â Tonyâs nagging broke through to Bucky and the whole bar reached back into his consciousness.
âSorry, what?â He stuttered, shaking his thought and trying to find a good answer to his friendâs remark. âI was distracted by Betty.â Bucky smiled sheepishly as he received a clap on his shoulder.Â
âThatâs my man.â Tony grinned and Sam huffed into his whiskey. And Bucky? He just sunk into his seat, feeling somehow shameful for the white lie he had made up.
â â â
The SPS office was impressive. Amongst the old New York brick building surrounding it, it reached up into the sky with its glass front everything. But you wouldnât be fooled by its fragile looks. This was one of the most secure buildings in the city. Youâd read about it in an article some time back - the whole hype about the company was their way of making fragile-looking things indestructible. You couldnât see through the âwindowsâ from the outside. And you wouldnât be able to launch a rocket through it either. SPS had patented their stronger-than-steel-glass years ago, making them the leading security company in the world.Â
To say you had been a little surprised to see the very owner of said company on your side of town would be an understatement. But besides his incredibly adamant way of flirting, he was quite normal to talk to. Heâd even asked you for advice on the cause they should donate to this year. And after having thought about it for the better part of what should have been your sleep time, you had decided to just try and pitch your idea.Â
âDo you have an appointment Ms.?â A stunning redhead peered up at you from her desk, her nails clicked on the keyboard of her computer as she waited for your answer. You didnât really know why you thought getting to Bucky was going to be easy. The security guard had already eyed you suspiciously at the front desk in the lobby. After youâd smiled at him as charmingly as you could, heâd decided to let you be someone elseâs problem today - or maybe he just didnât see you as a threat - whatever it was, it had gotten you this far. But what were you gonna say now?
Actually, I donât have an appointment, but Mr Barnes met me yesterday and after thinking about him all night, I decided to pay him a visit today.
Yeah, that wouldnât cut it. Not in this office. The redhead - N. Romanoff - was what her sign said, made that fairly clear with the way her lips pursed at the opened calendar on the screen.Â
âYou donât happen to have to discuss something not suited for work with Mr. Barnes, do you? I know he tends to leave some of his meetings... open-ended.âÂ
Your eyes got wide. âGod, no. Iâm not-â Your hands made a swishing motion between you two and then you took a breath. âIâm here to discuss business. Purely business. Mr. Barnes has made an order at my shop for the company fundraiser and I just want to discuss some details.âÂ
Her eyes glimmered when her lips pulled into a smile. âDid he now?â She peered over to catch the look of the blonde assistant a few feet next to her and then back to you. âWell if that is the case, please have a seat, Iâll tell him youâre here.â And with that, she got up, winked, and wrapped at the large wooden door presumably leading to Buckyâs office.Â
She came back a minute later and gestured for you to enter. âLucky for you, his meeting just got canceled, so you should have enough time.â
âThank you.â And then Ms. Romanoff went back to her desk and started whispering to the blonde assistant.Â
Bucky sat behind his desk, a sleek glass surface lightly cluttered with papers. Other than that, the room felt cool, the large rug by the seating area did little to cover the marbled floors. You stepped inside just as Bucky called out your name. You almost didn't see the wide smile on his face as the rising sun hung low on the horizon behind him, casting a halo-like glow around his silhouette. What a freaking entrance. Though Bucky surely couldnât control the sun, you thought with a small smile, you really had to stop imagining this man was extraordinary.Â
âYouâre here.â He got up and walked towards you, his sleek back shoes echoing on the ground. And then he was next to you, leading you to the seat in front of his desk with his hand on the small of your back. âWhat brings me the honor of your visit, darling.â
He leaned on his desk with his arms crossed, a pleasant smile on his lips. âDonât get me wrong, itâs nice that you came by, but you do have my number, donât you?â
âI do.â You cleared your throat, trying to sound as convincing as possible. âI was hoping you had some time to spare, actually. I find the phone to be a little... impersonal.â
Buckyâs eyes shined with intrigue as he leaned forward, pinning you to the chair with his gaze. He licked his lips. âShow me what exactly?â
âYouâll see.â You smirked. âI happen to know that your next meeting just got canceled.â
Bucky got even closer, his breath hitting your neck with every word he spoke. âAnd Iâll gladly cancel the rest, too.â A shiver shot over your arms, his cologne seemingly intoxicating you. But before you could respond, he backed up, grabbing his coat and gesturing towards the door. âLead the way.âÂ
And so you did.Â
â â â
Bucky was suspicious when you pulled him into the subway, but he decided against saying something. He had told you he trusted you after all, and though Bucky considered himself a lot of things, a flake was not one of them. So he let it happen.Â
It wasnât half bad, either. Somewhere between his office door and the train, you had taken his hand in yours to pull him along faster. Bucky had noticed his lips spreading into a smile. It didn't last long, unfortunately. Because as he had made eye contact with an elderly lady who had then proceeded to tell you what a beautiful couple you were, you had pulled your hand away with an awkward laugh.Â
âOh, God, no, weâre not together, maâam.âÂ
Admittedly, Bucky felt a little sting in his chest ever since. In fact, he was rubbing his hand over his shirt at this very moment. You were walking along a street in Brooklyn, not too far from your shop. The neighborhood was a little more run-down than he was used to, certainly nothing like the part of town he lived in. But he kept quiet still. Maybe he was a little butthurt from your earlier aversion about the couple comment, but to be fair, Bucky wasnât used to women denying him - except Nat.Â
You suddenly stopped, making Bucky almost run into you and then stare at you in question. But when you gestured towards the sign above the two-story building, his gaze softened.Â
There, above the blue-painted metal doors, hung a faded sign. Bucky could make out the orange and yellow stripes on the board, a big Sunflower painted in the middle of it all. âSunflower -Shelter & Foodâ.
âHey, are you coming or are you glued to the ground?â Your voice rang from the entrance, he hadnât even noticed that you already moved inside.Â
Bucky gulped when his eyes swayed back to you and then down his own body. If he was going to step in there in the outfit he was currently wearing, he would look like the biggest asshole on the planet.Â
âI canât go in there.â
âWhy not?â
He just gestured towards his clothes, his Rolex glinting in the sunlight for good measure. But there was no reaction from you. You stood in the doorway, pursing your lips seemingly in thought, and then shrugged your shoulders nonchalantly. âI guess youâll just have to deal with it then.â
âWhat?â He called your name. But when he realized you werenât joking, he caught up to you as fast as possible. Because the only thing worse than showing up there looking like he did was doing it alone, he decided swiftly.Â
ââThink now might be a good time to mention that this is not a very good place for a date,â Bucky mumbled next to you before closing his coat, trying to hide the even more expensive suit beneath.Â
âHow would you know?â You turned to him. âThis isnât a date, is it?â
Bucky just smirked and then he watched you greet a young boy with a warm hug, and man he imagined what it would be like to have you hug him like that.Â
âPeter this is Bucky, Bucky, Peter.â You pulled him towards you by his hand again. âI brought him along to help today, thought we always need an extra pair of hands around here.â
âPleasure to meet you, sir.â Peter reached his hand out, slightly frowning when he took in his appearance but did not say anything. âAny help is always welcome here. Come, Iâll show you what weâre doing today.âÂ
Within ten minutes, Bucky had an apron and gloves on and was ordered to cut the biggest stack of potatoes heâd ever seen. You were happily chatting away with the other helpers and Bucky, for the first time in a long time, felt ...normal.Â
Nobody was recognizing him in the crowd, there was no talk about business and investments, and there were no fucking cameras. Here, people recognized him for what he came to do, help. And it felt weird. Bucky wasnât quiet about his lavish lifestyle around his crowds. He knew the privilege he had, and he had worked for it enough to be proud of it. But it was like he had entered a different universe in this part of town. All the things he deemed normal, were things so far from imagination here, they were left out of conversations entirely. So, he tried to remember this whenever he was offered a conversation.Â
âYou do this every day?â He asked into the kitchen while struggling to peel his 5th potato.Â
âWhenever we can.â An older woman answered with a smile. She was the one who had shown him how to use the peeler faster. âThey are people just like you and me. They have to eat every day, too, Bucky.â
Bucky just nodded in silence at the humbling answer, his cheeks felt hot with embarrassment at how naive he had been.Â
Two hours later, he was standing by your side at the serving station, plating mashed potatoes and the accommodating âyouâre welcomeâ every once in a while. He rarely was out of his comfort zone, like today. But he also knew that, whenever he felt unsure, heâd look at you and youâd gift him an encouraging gesture that kept him going a little while longer.Â
After everyone had their food, you gave Bucky a tour of the premises.Â
There was a small courtyard, a couple rooms with telephones and a computer, some sofas and pillows. Nothing fancy but functional nonetheless. You led him through every room, explaining curtly what it was for and then you led him up the stairs.
On your way up, you passed Peter, who was helping a child find its toy and Bucky felt a lump form in his throat at all the new impressions he was fed today.
He cleared his throat. âPeter... is he?â
You shook your head. âNot exactly. His parents died when he was quite young. Lucky for him, though, he has always been a bright kid. He got a scholarship for every school he ever went to. But he spends most of his free time here. He has this urge to help wherever he can. Took me a couple months to keep him from skipping his lectures.â You chuckled and led him through the next door.Â
Bucky nodded with adoration. Not many people dedicated their time to something that would not benefit them directly. And while Bucky knew what a dedicated mind was capable of, he had to admit that his efforts were always motivated by personal gain.Â
âHeâs very admirable for that.âÂ
You just hummed in response. âI donât think he chose it himself. Not that I think he wouldnât. But this shelter belonged to his uncle and aunt. They died when he was in high school. Heâs working hard to keep this place alive. As do we all.â
The next room you entered was resembling a classroom. âWhat happens here?â
âMost of the children are registered for the public school of this district. But they donât always make it there. This room gives them the opportunity to catch up on missed work. We also have adult classes here, preparing for job interviews and such.â
The next hallway presented doors, all leading to bedrooms, as you explained to Bucky when you walked through the corridor. The last door was larger than the others - a double swing leading to a big sanitary area. Showers, toilets, and sinks lined the walls - all run down but functional.Â
âThis place could use some serious renovating,â Bucky mumbled, but he was sure you had heard him. Because you looked up at him now, a sad smile decorating your beautiful face.Â
âWe try to make it as clean and cozy as possible here, but we just donât have the necessary financial means for it. It works for now. The people coming here need very little. But itâs only a matter of time until the roof needs redoing or the pipes or the windows, or the-â
âYeah...â Bucky trailed off, making you stop and giving him a break to breathe. He usually wasnât surrounded by people unable to get out of unfortunate situations. The clients he spent his time with ordered his services to protect the material things theyâd bought for status and fun. It was something entirely different when you were robbed of your place to sleep.Â
âWell, this completes my humble tour.â You clasped your hands together and proceeded to look at your watch. âI think itâs time to go home.â
You descended the stairs in silence, Peter hugged Bucky goodbye and when he stepped foot back on the sidewalk, Bucky turned around to the sign once more. You stood beneath it, leaning against the doorframe and smiling at him. It was dark out now.Â
âAre you not coming?â He asked watching as you shook your head.Â
âPeter has an exam tomorrow. I offered to stay the night.â
âHere? Alone?â
âYes.âÂ
Bucky stepped towards you again. âThen Iâm go-â
âStop.â Your hand reached for his shoulder, the touch sending him straight back to a haze. âDonât do this. I know how you feel. Thereâs this sadness inside you now. You saw this for the first time. It feels awful - I know.â You retracted your hand and pushed yourself off the doorframe. âBut until you donât see anything other than pity for these people, you canât be here without breaking.â
âDoll...â
âBucky, I'm serious. Go home. Sleep on it. Try to understand the situation.âÂ
Bucky couldnât remember the last time heâd felt this helpless. He just stared at you, unable to move or say anything. He didnât like the idea of you staying here alone at night. And though the feeling of caring for someone heâd only known for two days so much scared him, he pushed it aside.Â
You leaned forward and hugged him goodbye and then the cold night surrounded him again. âThank you for trusting me today.â And then you turned around and left him standing outside alone.Â
â â â
Your purple-inked pen marked the date in your calendar.Â
âThatâs an unusually big order, Steve...â You looked up at the blonde frequenting your shop every so often. Heâd always get the pink carnations for his girlfriend. Apparently, she loved them after you bound them in the first bouquet you ever sold to Steve. He was a simple man, you could tell, so his usual orders were just as such. But not today. âAre you planning anything special?â
The handsome customer blushed with an innocent smile. âActually...â He scratched the back of his neck. âIâm planning to propose.â He looked so sheepish when you clasped your hands in excitement.
âOh, thatâs amazing. Congratulations!â
âWell not yet.â He cleared his throat, visibly trying to compose himself. But this giant pretty man in front of you was adorably nervous.Â
âI just know sheâll say yes,â you mused and made a note to reserve some more carnations for his order - a couple simple arrangements that held so much meaning.
âHow do you know?â
You watched Steve peer over to you with hopeful eyes. âItâs not every day a man puts so much effort and thought into what bouquet to get his girlfriend on a casual Monday evening each week.â You winked and Steve nodded lost in thought.Â
âTo be honest, I havenât even thought about her saying no. I wouldnât know what to do with myself.â
âYou shouldnât worry too much. You are a good man, everyone can see that. And just to be sure, Iâll make the most perfect flowers ever. Paired with your charming ways, there will be no other option but to say yes.â
He relaxed a little. âGreat. Thank you.â And then he turned to leave your shop.Â
âIâll have them ready by Friday.â You smiled.Â
âThank you... so much.â Steve smiled and you knew there was so much more hidden in his gesture.
â â â
It had become a habit that Bucky visited the shelter with you once a week. Admittedly, you were surprised he even cared enough to free his schedule so religiously. But as of the past four weeks, he had shown up at your shop, walked with you to Sunflower shelters, mingled with the people, and then even walked you home.Â
It was actually kind of refreshing, seeing him so invested and kind of protective. There werenât many guys in the city that cared enough to get you home safely. Peter offered more times than often, but you rather knew him safe at the shelter than try to fight a gangster double his size out of the kindness of his heart and the deep wish to somehow become a superhero one day.
So Bucky had to do it for now. Not that you were complaining. He was handsome and charming and interesting to converse with given the vastly different lives you lived. But he tried to adapt. Ever since the incident on the first day, he had even tried to wear less wealth-telling clothing, though he seemed to not always hit the mark just right.Â
In a way, bucky was a little fashion icon. Youâd noticed it in his colorful waistcoats, the intricate details on his shoes, or the fancy cufflinks adorning his oxford-cotton shirts. He tried to dress down. But to your surprise, the color remained. Instead of waistcoats and dress shirts, he wore regular t-shirts. His confidence never wavered. Â
A little smile hushed across your face every time you looked at him. The pink shirt he wore combined with the green apron he had been given, made him look like a lollipop. A Beautiful one, that was. With a dashing smile and an adorable frown as he tried to separate the peas from the pod.Â
âSo... how is the gala coming along?â You teased him a little having noticed how unusual this task was for him. Throughout your few meetings, you had gotten to know Bucky quite well. And apart from his statement the very day he stepped foot into your shop, he revealed to you more and more how difficult the project was for him.
âLetâs just say Iâm glad I can count on the flower arrangements,â he grumbles as a pea slipped from his fingers and across the table.Â
âThat bad, huh?â
His hands stopped working. âThe Band canceled on me again and I seem to run after every other arrangement I have made so far. If I had known how much work-â he huffed and then shook his head with an even deeper frown.Â
âHey, itâs okay to not be good at everything.â You encouraged him, your elbow nudging his side as you smiled lightly. âThere has got to be something humbling you. Makes you seem more human.â
âGee, thanks.â
âI meant to ask you...â You picked up your task to avoid his eyes that were suddenly on you again. âHow come youâre the one organizing the gala?â
Bucky chuckled, his head shaking for what seemed like the hundredth time today. âI made a deal with my assistant.âÂ
âWhat was in it for you?â You threw a couple peas in the strainer and Bucky did the same.
He shrugged. âI got to hand off some paperwork.â
Wow. âSeriously? A bit of paperwork seems like a poor trade for months of organizing something so important.â
Bucky laughed, the sound warming your stomach from the inside out and finally making you look at him again. It was little moments like this in which he felt so careless and relaxed. You liked to believe the shelter did it to him, or maybe even you. But primarily, you were glad he laid off his work self just then. âYeah it might have not been my smartest move... but I donât mind it really.â
âWhyâs that?â Your eyes locked and you suddenly became very aware of how close the two of you were standing.Â
âIf it werenât for the deal, I would have never met you.â There was something so honest and pure about the way he had stated this so plainly. And for a moment, you liked to forget that he might have just meant your suggestion to donate to Sunflower. That maybe, the funny fluttery feeling in your stomach wasnât one-sided, and that you too meant something greater to him than the coincidences that led him into your shop that day.Â
A wide smile spread on Buckyâs face and then he winked. He freaking winked at you. And while you turned back to your peas, desperate to hide the fluster on your face, you had to remind yourself that this was Bucky fucking Barnes and that he knew what he was doing.
About two hours later, you sat amongst the people currently living at the shelter, sharing the meal you had prepared for them with the hopes of getting them through another day. You and Bucky were sitting with Gabe Jones, a veteran whose post-traumatic stress disorder had cost him everything after the Vietnam War. He was always telling stories of his time on the front - a way to cope with his horrible past. By now, you and Peter had probably heard every single one of his stories twice. But Bucky was on the edge of his seat. Listening with intrigue as the food on his plate remained untouched.Â
âIt was â68 when I was sent out. There were soldiers who done already survived a year or so at the front. And, son, I am sayinâ survived âcause you couldnât call that livinâ.â Gabe shook his head before pointing his fork to his shoulder. âCaught a grenade in â69 and on our way to camp, they shot at the helicopter. Lost my right arm and comrade that day. The damn armâs gone but Iâm gonâ have the memory forever.â
The words didnât seem to affect the veteran anymore, but they never failed to leave their recipients shocked and wondering. It was always the same question: How can someone fight for a country, leave their life for a country, and end up here?
And honestly? You didnât know.Â
âIâm so sorry, sir.â Bucky swallowed as his eyes fled over to yours. âThank you for your service.â
âNotinâ to be sorry âbout.â Gabe waved his hand and then pointed at Buckyâs plate. âYou eatinâ that?âÂ
Bucky just shook his head and pushed his plate towards Gabe, a somber state overtaking his body. You did feel a little bad. But you also knew that Gabe wasnât affected by sympathies and that he was happy at Sunflower - though he preferred the street over the beds here. While he had spent just another day existing, he had simultaneously opened Buckyâs eyes to the severity of making stories like his more known.Â
By now you were pretty confident, Bucky would choose the homeless as recipients for his companyâs fundraiser sum. But he surprised you by getting involved with the people here over and over again, willing to learn and to understand.Â
The walk to your apartment building that evening was awfully quiet. Bucky had insisted he walk on the street side of the sidewalk, buried his hands in his coat pockets, and shut up ever since.
You knew he was contemplating, letting the day play on repeat in his mind. He probably had a lot of questions, a lot of frustration, and worry. Nothing unfamiliar to you, but something youâd learned to deal with ever since helping out at Sunflower.Â
âDonât feel bad,â you said when you stopped in front of the familiar brick building you called home.Â
âHow?â
âFeeling bad isnât helping them. You have the power to change things.â It was an awfully dry response, but the truth hurt sometimes.Â
Bucky just looked at you through hooded eyes, a knowing nod shaking his features as he watched slowly take a step back toward your front door.Â
âThank you,â he suddenly released - steady and calm. âFor taking me. For helping me see...âÂ
You couldnât help yourself. The confession overwhelmed you. Knowing you had succeeded in showing him what was so important to you overwhelmed you. You leaped forward and slung your arms around him, pressing tightly into his chest.Â
Buckyâs arms found their way around you in an instant, the hug conveying so much more than just a goodbye. It was a âthank youâ a âthis means the world to meâ.
After about a minute, you leaned up to him and placed a kiss to his cheek. âIâm also glad you took the deal, Bucky.â You whispered into his ear, feeling the smile on his face on your cheek.Â
When he finally released you, it seemed like the spell was gone. Bucky was back to burying his hands in his pockets, only the faint remnants of a smile hinting towards your earlier interaction. You hadnât realized how much this would affect him. You had forgotten how long you fought with yourself until you could act normal around the people at Sunflower yourself.Â
âDo you want to come up?â You threw your thumb over your shoulder at the entrance of the building with a lopsided smile. âDonât want that cheap bottle of merlot to go bad.â
Buckyâs eyes brightened underneath the street lights and the wide boyish grin returned to his face. âWe canât have that, can we?â
â â â
To say Buckyâs heart had skipped a beat at your invitation would have been an understatement. It did somersaults and ended with an impressive backflip. Heâd not expected a move from your side. Especially, since the last time he had picked you up, the universe had flipped him the bird by sending two of his former one-night-stands your way. He had been able to shake them off before they were able to yell at him or reveal more of what their connection to him was. But that marked the first time he was a little embarrassed by his late endeavors. You had acted like nothing happened, but since that night, Bucky hadnât stopped wondering what you thought of him.Â
You lead him up the narrow staircase to a red wooden door, the color chipping by the floor as an indicator of having to kick it to open sometimes. Beyond the door, it was cozy and warm. Every corner of your place had a memory placed in it - a self-made quilt or a photograph. When you walked through it, Bucky could feel the love and time this place had seen.Â
It was nothing like his own apartment: a penthouse standing high above the city, with sleek black surfaces and cold marble wherever you reached. Here, he felt the need to take his shoes off, to feel the fuzzy carpets on the scratched-up wooden floors. Your place wasnât sterile like his, it felt... like a good hug.Â
Bucky snorted as the result of a breath he released. Never before had he cared about what his place lacked. It was expensive and pristine, clean and big. And even though your apartment was about the size of his living room, it had so much more to offer.Â
âThe living room is right through there, you can choose a movie if you like.â Your voice called out from somewhere Bucky assumed to be the kitchen as he kicked off his shoes and made himself comfortable on the rust-colored sofa that had more pillows than necessary. It was super comfortable, though. And the lack of space due to the pillows forced you to sit a little closer to him, so he wasnât complaining.
âYour place is... cute.â He stated as you handed him a glass of wine and laughed.Â
âItâs a shoebox but I do love it very much. Probably nothing compared to what youâre used to.â
Bucky shook his head and took a sip. The wine did taste cheap, but he did not care. âBigger isnât always better.â His arm was spread on the backrest but your whole body was turned to him. âIt has a lot of character.â
âOh god, please stop, youâre just making it sound worse.â Your hand came up to hide your face but your smile peeked through the gesture.Â
Bucky laughed. âI didnât mean it condescendingly. I really do like it. Reminds me of my childhood home.â
âAre you close with your family?â Bucky was surprised by the question. Maybe it was because his friends never talked about his family, or because the peers he hung out with tended to discuss business rather than sentimental. But he realized that nobody had asked him about it for a long time.
And so he began talking. Bucky talked about his parents and how both of them died early in his life. He told you how close he was with his sister until she got adopted into another family. He spoke about his childhood with Steve and how theyâd met Sam and Tony in college, about the night they had the idea for Shield Protective Services, and finally the day he was told his sister had passed away.Â
Throughout his story, you had leaned into him closer, hanging onto his every word until your hand had to support your body on his thigh and Bucky suddenly stopped talking.Â
Your glasses were emptied, the bottle as well, and Bucky gulped when he felt the heat from your hand travel throughout his entire body.Â
âSo... thatâs my story.â He had to clear his throat to gain his usual timber back, his hands becoming sweaty when you blinked next to him. âWhat about you, dove?â
âDove?â You smiled, yet intrigued by the name that had slipped past his lips in the trance of the moment. Heâd only ever called you that in his thoughts. Attributed the nickname to you the second he realized it was the most fitting one of them all.Â
âYou donât like it?â He asked, his arm slipping towards your shoulder ever so slightly.Â
âI like it.â You smiled. âI just want to know... why this one?â
A hush of giddiness crawled up his throat when he thought about his answer. It was the way you had welcomed him so easily into this world of yours. How you were willing to show him the things precious to you. That you trusted him with this very opportunity to help. Every day he spent with you he felt it, found that between coding his new security program and meeting with Hydra enterprises, its somber reality sent him into a feeling of breathing fresh air. You created a button that turned off the noise in his head. âBecause you bring me peace.â
Your eyes stared at him in wonder when he tilted your chin with his thumb and index finger. There was appreciation and happiness, he could see it, feel it.Â
Bucky was entranced by your stare when your voice whispered a response to him: âThatâs the sweetest thing Iâve ever been told.â
You leaned forward and Buckyâs heart threatened to jump out of his chest, and then your face fell into his chest, your arms encasing him in the warmest hug heâd ever received. He willed his pulse to slow and wrapped his arms around you tightly. A little humbled and a little confused, but appreciative of the situation nonetheless.Â
You stayed like this when you chose a movie to watch. Even after an hour, Buckyâs grip didnât loosen. He peered down at you on his chest and watched as you fell asleep. And when he was sure you were far away in your slumber, he pressed a warm kiss to your head, lingering in the scent of your shampoo. Â
â â â
Bucky stared at his computer screen as the pen in his hand clicked on his glass desk in perfect rhythm. The Shelter website displayed on the surface, portraying a brighter version of the sign you had dragged him to that very first day.Â
But it wasnât the heartfelt story behind the building or the way his pen clicked slightly more hollow every other tap because he turned it too much that had him zoned out at work. It was - as unbelievable as it sounded - a woman. Not just any, no. You.Â
âHey, I need a signature from you for this design draft.â Steve dropped his notepad on the desk, then rounded it and settled behind Bucky who had yet to recognize his presence.Â
âThis your charity suggestion?â He questioned with his hands on his friendâs office chair.Â
Bucky nodded absentmindedly. Perhaps it was because he had decided to support your suggestion the second you had taken his hand on his way to the subway. Or maybe he was just letting his mind roam freely again. Mainly because it was a safe bet to call you into memory and he liked the feeling it provided.Â
A pale hand waved in front of his face. âEarth to Bucky.â Steve snapped his fingers, making the brunette jump. âYou seem oddly distracted.â
He had been thinking about you. Of course, he had. There seemed to be nothing else he could do lately. Every time Bucky read through his reports, he imagined what your voice would sound like reading them to him. Whenever he went down to IT, he envisioned the room decorated with your flowers and how much happier they would make the place. When he sat in a meeting with HR and watched their burnt-out faces stare back at him through their coffee haze, he wondered if you could make them as lively as you made him.Â
Bucky could - so he realized after weeks of denial - not escape you.Â
That was one thing. But the more chilling revelation was that he did not mind. He enjoyed the little admonitions his mind set out in his environment. He appreciated the quickening thumb in his chest, whenever he saw his calendar entries stating another meeting with you - so much so that he almost forgot how unusual it was for him.Â
It was crazy. A month ago, if someone had dared to tell him heâd be finding something more than his regular flings, he would have laughed in their face. In fact, he actually did a few days before he met you.Â
Bucky didnât know what kind of magical spell youâd put on him, but within a few weeks, heâd started to become a different man. A better version of his thought-to-be-marvelous self. Now he realized what he was missing: a counterpart, someone who made life seem dull without them by his side. He wasnât going to admit it to Sam or Steve immediately, but the idea of you being that very someone became more attractive each day.Â
âJust a lot to do with the gala and all...â Bucky trailed off and spun around to Steve.Â
âYou know, I never took you for an event manager...â The blonde grinned and his eyes lit up in the office light. âDonât take this the wrong way, I like seeing you try something new, but this feels very... out of place.â
âBut you also know I never back down from a challenge. And Iâll be damned if Nat has something to hold against me for life.â
Steveâs head tipped forward. âWe both know that woman has blackmail material for two lifetimes on us.Â
âShe really does.â Bucky sighed and then slumped back in his chair, the little issue he had been hiding from his best friend gnawing on his mind.Â
He thought about Steve and Bambi and how he had just asked her to marry him. Sheâd said yes, of course, nobody expected otherwise. Steve - of all people - was living a magical fairytale life with the woman of his dreams. And here Bucky was, thinking he had figured it all out with women and relationships - or rather that he never wanted one - yet he found himself wondering why that decision bugged him so much when you came into the picture.Â
âCan I ask you something?â Bucky squeezed his eyes shut and took a deep breath, not believing he was really going to ask Steve for dating advice.
âAlways.â
âHow did you know that Bambi was the one?â A stupid question, really. Bucky already knew there was nobody like you. But it was best to start this conversation off lightly.
Steve smiled widely again, his cheeks tinted pink. âWell, I couldnât stop thinking about her. And not in an I havenât touched a woman in years kind of way... I couldnât stop. Every second of every day, I imagined her with me. The thought of her made me happier even before she knew how I felt about her. And, well, it also hurt like hell when I thought she didnât return my feelings... when she refused to talk to me for a day...â He cleared his throat and then eyed Bucky again. âWhy do you want to know?â
âNothing in particular. I was just wondering and I needed material for my best man speech.â But the blonde didnât buy it. He caught Buckyâs chair when he attempted to turn away, pulling him right back in front of him. âAre you dating someone? Is it that woman from the flower shop?â
How did he know about you? âNo??â Bucky squinted at Steve.Â
âYou know if you wanted advice, I do consider myself an expert to some extent now.â Bucky wanted to wipe the smug grin right off his friendâs face.Â
âYouâre an idiot.â He stood up and paced to the window.
âOh come on, Buck.â Steve followed suit, the playful grin ever present. âYou teased me for years about my love life, canât be mad now.â
âIâm not mad.â He was annoyed.Â
They stood by the glass front for a while, watching the busy city unfold beneath them in the glow of the rising sun. Bucky could feel his friendâs eyes stare at him though. And after another moment of silence, the blonde finally spoke. âYou should ask her out.â
âWhat?â He faced him again.Â
âYou like her. I can tell. And youâve never acted like this about a woman, let alone put so much effort into a relationship. I know itâs not your style, but I think it would do you good to at least try.â
âThe effort is for the gala.â Bucky corrected.Â
âRight. Because thatâs your thing... charity galas.â Steve squeezed Buckyâs shoulder and then tapped it and then he made his way to the door. âIâm not going to tell you what to do, but I really wish you would listen to your heart and not be a stubborn dickhead for once. This could be something life-changing - something great. And itâs your choice whether you welcome it or not.â
Life changing. Bucky didnât like the sound of that. He liked to be in control of the situation and rule over his own life. However that aspect seemed to have left the building when you entered.Â
He huffed. There you were back on his mind again, and he felt the tingle creep up his throat. There was no denying it. What Steve had described with Bambi was what Bucky had with you.Â
With a shake of his head, he grabbed his coat, told Nat heâd be back in an hour, and then pressed the button for the elevator. He would deny it if Steve ever dared to take pride in convincing him to do so, but heâd also be damned if he didnât at least try to find out if you felt the same.Â
â â â
There was a burly-looking stranger standing at the counter when Bucky entered your shop. He had willed the traitorous voice in his head to silence all the way here. But now that he saw the handsome older man taking all your attention to the point you hadnât even noticed him stepping in over the customer's broad shoulders, the heat began to bubble up again.Â
Bucky wanted to tell himself you wouldnât prefer the salt-and-pepper-bearded man over him. But to be honest, he didnât even know what your type was. Yes, you had cuddled on your sofa just the other night, but since Bucky wouldnât consider himself an expert in anything other than one-night stands, it could have been a friendly gesture for all he knew.Â
âWould that be all for you?â You asked the man and handed him his chance. Bucky watched as his thumb grazed over your hand, feeling a tinge of anger starting to consume him. Â
âThatâs all. Thank you, sweetheart.â
âI hope to see you again soon, sir.â
âOh, you can bet on it.â He winked then turned, nodded to Bucky in a brief greeting, and then exited the shop. Buckyâs eyes lingered on the door for a while longer. He took deep breaths as his jaw clenched and the bell above the entrance fell silent.Â
âHey.â A warm hand touched his arm, pulling him right back to your eyes. And just like that, the anger washed away a little. There were just you and him in your tiny oasis amid Brooklyn. âAre you alright?â
âIâm fine.â He forced a smile, but the frown on his face probably betrayed him. âJust thought that man was a little inappropriate.âÂ
âHeâs just a sweet man buying flowers for his wife.â Your eyes glimmered with mischief when you bit your lip. âBucky... are you jealous?â
Oh, hell no.
âJealous?â Bucky wasnât jealous. He couldnât be. There was nothing to be jealous of. He had no claim to you. Even if he really wished he did. And yet that man had angered him with only the touch of his hand. That was the only thing heâd ever get. Bucky knew what it felt like to have you in his arms, how your body lotion settled in his nose, how your head fit perfectly in the crook of his neck. âNo.â
âBut you should not be so naĂŻve, dove. Married men are also flirting... and cheating.â
A short laugh escaped your throat before you caught yourself again and Buckyâs heart began doing that funny somersault thing. âNot to burst your bubble or anything, but I do know how the real world works.â You crossed your arms before your chest. âBesides, what do you care if he did ask me out? Maybe it has been a lifelong dream of mine to be a mistress.â
âItâs not. And I donât. I just think you deserve someone better than a cheater.â
âOh, like who? The percentage of good guys in this city is disappointingly low.â
Bucky snorted, guided by the excitement in his chest he opened his arms. âPlease, I could name at least five guys off the top of my head who are better than whatever that was.â His left hand flailed in the direction of the door, referring to the previous customer.Â
âName one.â
âMe.â
The surprise sprung onto your features faster than Bucky realized what he had said. âWhat?âÂ
Well, this was certainly not the way he had planned to ask you out today. Damn jealousy. The only way for this to not be embarrassing was to own up to it now. It was what he had come here for after all, right?
Bucky looked directly into your eyes, his expression sincere and determined. "Yes, me. I may not have everything figured out, but I do know one thing: I care about you. I've seen the way you light up a room, the kindness you show to everyone around you. You deserve someone who sees that, who appreciates it.â
Your eyes softened when you shook your head, averting your gaze to the ground. âI donât know, Bucky.â
He bit the insides of his cheeks, instantly hoping youâd say something else. Anything that would show him there was a chance you would change your mind. The silence was all-consuming, but he kept his mouth shut, careful not to fuck it up once again.Â
âBucky, I appreciate your honesty, I really do. But I don't think it's a good idea.â
Bucky's brows furrowed, his confidence wavering as your soft refusal hit him. "What do you mean, you don't know?" he asked, his tone tinged with a hint of frustration. He struggled to keep his composure, the unfamiliar feeling of rejection gnawing at him. He swallowed the lump in his throat as he searched for the right thing to say. His jaw tensed, betraying the hurt he felt deep down. "Forget it," he muttered, his voice barely above a whisper. With a curt nod, he turned on his heel, his disappointment palpable in the air as he made his exit, leaving you to contemplate his unexpected confession.
â â â
âWhy, donât you just look precious!â You bent down and picked up Samâs daughter, Darla, who had eagerly stormed through the door as soon as heâd opened it because she wasnât quite tall enough to reach the handle yet.Â
âYou... Iâve missed you soooo much.â You nuzzled her into your chest and pretended to squeeze real tight.Â
âCome play dragons with me!â The little one squirmed and then hopped off in her tiny knight costume.
âNothing I would rather do,â you singsonged and then mouthed a âsheâs grown so muchâ to Sam before he closed the door with a shake of his head.Â
âI know... she just does it without my permission. Unbelievable.â
About ten minutes later, you sat on the living room floor with a bunch of stuffed dragons, you had been instructed to play. Samâs daughter was happily fighting the stuffies with her wooden sword and his husband handed you a cup of coffee with a smile.Â
âSo how have things been?â Matt sat down on the sofa and Sam instantly wrapped his arm around him. Your eyes lingered on the interaction for a second before your gaze wandered back to Darla.Â
âOh, you know, business as usual. The shop is doing very well... the shelters are holding up.â You smiled at her and then made a dragon fall backward in defeat.Â
âHm...â He frowned. âThatâs weird... I had a feeling it was getting better soon.â
You smiled tight-lipped and wondered if you had butchered it all with your stubbornness. Matt wasnât clairvoyant or anything crazy like it. But the joke of his other senses being heightened due to his impaired vision had carried on forever. And even though you never believed in supernatural magical things, you couldnât help but wonder if maybe, there was a hunch of truth to it nonetheless. He had been right about many other things after all.Â
âI donât know,â you sighed and Darla excused herself to her room to âget more toysâ. âExcept for the shop, everything else seems to go a little downhill right now.â
âBut you have been seeing someone, no?â Matt tilted his head and Sam squeezed his shoulder in an attempt to make him stop.Â
âBabe, do we need to talk about appropriate prying again?âÂ
âSorry,â Matt blushed, âOccupational hazard.â
You laughed and then turned serious again. âI have... but to be honest, I doubt it will have a future. Itâs - I donât know - it just seems a little too good to be true.â
âItâs been Bucky youâve been seeing, hasnât it?â Sam chimed in with a calm deep voice, making your attention snap to him. Your heart began to race at the mention of Buckyâs name.Â
âHow did you know?â
His fingers lifted in air quotes âA gorgeous girl with a flower shop in Brooklyn that somehow tries to convince him to donate to Sunflower shelters? You did not make it hard, honey.â
âHe... he talks to you about me?â Well, that changes things, you thought as you watched Sam reassure you with a small smile.Â
"More like a little birdy told me...." Sam shrugged. âWhat happened?â He leaned forward slightly, his eyes holding concern.
âIsnât it obvious? I donât want to be one of his many trophies. And Iâm scared, I just made the chase attractive by not putting out immediately.â Your eyes turned glassy. âWhat if he will lose interest when I do.â Your voice broke, making you almost whisper the last part into the living room. âBecause I really really want to...â
Matt cleared his throat. âIf it helps anything... I have a feeling you are not going to be just another one-night stand.â
âAnd why is that?â
âIâve never seen him like this.â Sam chimed in. âSo butthurt about a girl or even put effort in a relationship that would only become a one night stand - which it is not - he wants more, he needs more. He sees a future with you. And as much as his bad-boy demeanor has made that pretty unbelievable in the past, he is changing. I just know, and itâs about time that he aims for peace and quiet and love and comfort.â
Turning your head with a suspicious grin, you answered: âIs Matt contagious? Because that sounded one hell of a lot like a prediction to me.â
Sam just shook his head with a smile, scooted forward on the sofa, and then took your hands in his. âBelieve me when I say this: You are so amazing. And not even a douchebag like Bucky could deny it. Yes, he has had his fair share of women in the past, and he can be the most stubborn dickhead in all of New York City, but heâs not stupid. He knows something valuable when he sees it. And you, love, have given him the most precious thing heâs ever had.â
You held eye contact for a short moment, letting your friendâs words sink in and warm you from the inside until the butterflies in your stomach began to tingle. As much as you wanted to refuse, you had shown him love and acceptance every step of the way. And Bucky? Bucky had tried so hard to impress you. He had done so many things just for you, to spend time with you.
You just wrote it off as a means to get you to sleep with him. But at this point, that argument was farfetched. Because throughout the time you spent together, his presence was pleasant, casual, and... wanted.Â
âSo what do I do now?â You said with determination, making a smile spark on both Samâs and Mattâs faces.
â â â
âSo, Barnes is unusually grumpy tonight.â Bucky heard Tony say when he came back from the bathroom, jamming his glas on the table to announce he was listening. âDid you get cockblocked or what?â
âShut it, Stark, or Iâll personally demonstrate your very own cockblock.â Bucky pressed through his teeth.Â
âDamn, Buck. What the hell could possibly throw you off this much?â Tony signaled for two more drinks to the bar as Bucky took a seat again.Â
Sam looked at him with a raised brow - the fucker knew what was going on. But Bucky refused to get dragged into talking about his feelings.Â
âI thought it was going good?â Steve chimed in, a question in his features. Steve, you punk. Shut up!
Bucky knew he was referring to the bouquets of flowers that subtly decorated the office now. First his own desk, then the kitchen. And when Nat had grown suspicious, he proceeded to place them on her desk to have her stop asking questions.Â
It wasnât his doing - not this time. You had just given him a bouquet of the flowers you couldnât sell anymore every time you met. And Bucky couldnât bring himself to throw them out. They also reminded him of you and were a nice little distraction from work. ...Not that it mattered anymore.
âGoing good? What is going on? What are you talking about, Rogers?â
âBucky met a- ouch goddamnit!â A kick was heard from beneath the table. And when Steveâs eyes snapped over to Sam, the man just tipped his head with a warning stare. âWhat the hell, man?â
âOkay, thatâs it. I feel like you guys donât tell me anything. I need details. Now.â
âNo.â
Bucky didnât need Tony to know. In fact, Bucky didnât need anyone to know he had trouble talking to a woman. He, of all people, who never had any difficulties getting even the married ones - yeah he wasnât too proud of that... But Tony would just make everything worse. And with his patience hanging by a thread right about now, he was not willing to play with fire.Â
âBuck, we- theyâre your friends. They deserve to know, especially if things are as serious as you told me.â Bucky just stared at Steve in silence, his gaze trained on the crystal class in front of him with the amber liquid untouched. Steve always had a need to calm the storm. And maybe, Bucky would let him do it this time.ïżœïżœ
Truthfully, Bucky couldnât imagine a life without you anymore. His friends would sooner or later hear about you - if he had not fucked it up entirely. So, it was better to rip the band-aid off now than peel it back painfully slow in the future.Â
He crossed his arms and exchanged a brief glance with the blonde, and Steve understood that he was allowed to proceed.Â
âBucky met someone. Heâs organizing the charity gala this year and sheâs the florist doing the flower arrangements.â He had never noticed it before, but ever since Bambi had entered Steveâs life, his best friendâs fable for romance became more and more apparent to Bucky.Â
âSheâs also helped him find a cause to donate to. Sheâs been taking him to the Shelter she has worked at for years,â Sam chimed in and Bucky didnât even question where he got his information from anymore. Steve and he had always been close, and though Bucky didnât believe Steve would tell Sam his most private conversations, Sam always had a way of finding out.Â
âEvent planning? Florist? Who are you and what have you done to Bucky?â Tony looked seriously stunned, But Bucky didnât expect anything less than incomprehension. He had always been the only one in the group Tony could relate to and talk to when it came to women and lifestyles. Now, that very thing was slipping away.Â
Bucky just shrugged, uncertain how to answer. It was true: He had changed quite a bit ever since meeting you. But they weren't bad changes. He actually liked them.Â
Steve cleared his throat. âI thought things were going great, just the other day he talked about asking her out. And there were all these flowers in the office, I just assumed...â
âYeah well, they werenât.â Bucky interrupted as he felt the frustration creep back up. There were so many new feelings mixing within him that he didnât know what to do with them.Â
âWell itâs good to have you back, I guess. Canât imagine how that wouldâve turned out.â Tonyâs hand landed on Buckyâs shoulder, who immediately brushed it off.Â
âWhat do you mean âturned outâ?â
His head swayed from left to right and his hands turned outward. âWell, we all agree it would have never worked out right? Youâre not the one for relationships and she was clearly using you for that charity money.â
What the actual fuck?
âYou donât know her. So donât you dare assume anything about her.â Bucky sprung up, his hands hitting the table with a thump. âDove has the kindest, most beautiful soul on this earth.â He wouldnât let Tony, of all people, insult you. Not you. Not his dove. And, yes, maybe it also hurt a little that his friend did not believe Bucky could change for something truly important. And maybe it scratched his ego that this might have been the reason for your rejection the other day. But all of that seemed unimportant now.Â
âLook at you growing all protective.â
âTony.â Steveâs condescending tone rumbled over the booth.Â
A look at Tony and Bucky wanted to smack the smirk off his face. Another look at Sam, whose eyes had grown soft with empathy. And one last look at Steve, whoâd only wanted him to be as happy as him. Damn it.Â
âYou wouldnât fucking know what Iâm talking about, Stark.â
And then he stormed out of the Ironbar and into the night, head fuming, heart racing, and only one thing on his mind.Â
â â â
You were pretty sure Bucky would have kicked your door down had you not opened it the second time he wrapped his fist against it. Now he was standing in front of you, cheeks reddened from the cool night air, chest rising with deep breaths, but still devilishly handsome.Â
âHey, Bucky!â You smiled until you noticed the irritated look in his eyes. âWhat are you doing here?â
He seemingly ignored you, stepping into your home and then turning once you closed the door. âDo you think I can change?â
âWhat?â
âDo you believe I could change? That I could become the person you would date?â His eyes were pleasing, his head cocked to the side - fidgedy.
âIs... is this about the other day?â
Bucky looked nervous, vulnerable even. âJust answer my question, please.â
âI believe everyone has the ability to change. But I also know not everyone wants to.â You looked at your hands, suddenly feeling a bit awkward.
âThen why... why do you think I havenât. Through all the times weâve gone to the shelter, through all the conversations. Iâve never had that with someone before... what I have with you.â
There it was. You knew you had to talk to him about it sooner or later. Sam and Matt had suggested as much. You just didn't know it would be this soon.
âBucky, I just donât want to end up as one of the women passing you on the street, throwing side eyes at the newest one youâre having on your arm.â Yeah... that encounter had been a rather awkard one. Not to mention how nervous you were that night, hopig Bucky had only played it cool in order to protect you.
âSee, but that wouldnât happen to you, dove. It wouldnât. Because I realized that you are the reason that makes me want to change.â Bucky's gaze softened as he spoke, his tone gentle yet resolute he stepped closer. âI'm not perfect, but I promise you this: I'll always try my best for you. So, yeah, maybe it's a long shot, but I think I could be good for you. And if you'd give me the chance, I'd love to show you.â He took your hands in his, then closed his eyes and came even closer. âI know I'd treat you right.â
Throughout his confession, your gaze never faltered from his face. You could feel the desperate honesty in his tone, in the way his hands lightly trembled. He was scared, and he lay that emotion in your hands - for you to do whatever you needed with it.Â
Your voice was shaky when you answered, a light hue of shame fogging the question on the tip of your tongue. âBut how do I know...?â That this is not what youâre telling every woman in this godforsaken city?Â
But Bucky understood. Because apparently that pull you'd had toward him had been there for a reason. âBecause the things you make me feel scare me.â His face was mere inches from yours now, you could see every speck of color in his irises. âThey scare me because Iâve never felt them before. Every time Iâm not with you, I think of you. In every situation I am in alone, I imagine how much more exciting it would be with you in it. Iâm going crazy. Iâm lost without you, dove.â
A single tear ran down your face at his confession. This moment felt so raw, his words so sincere. But most importantly, it made your heart pound with excitement.Â
âWill you be mine?â His forehead leaned against yours, his hands moving up your arms and to your neck. âPlease say yes,â he whispered and his breath tickled your nose.Â
He just felt so right. Bucky felt right in your home, in your arms, in your life. âYes.â You finally answered and as soon as the syllable left your mouth, his lips came crashing onto yours.Â
Within seconds, Bucky had you pressed against the door. His hands held your face lovingly, his hands warm and big on your skin. The kiss was deep and so unbelievably pure, it punched the breath from your lunges the second your lips connected. And suddenly you knew that Buckyâs words held far less emptiness than you had feared. Nobody could kiss like this and not be sincere. At least you hoped it to be true because once youâd gotten a taste, you knew you would never want to try anything else. You could get drunk off him. Forever.
Your hands wandered beneath Buckyâs coat, settling in the warmth of his back beneath the thick wool and feeling the muscles ripple when he pulled you even closer.Â
You sighed into him because the moment felt so right, so perfect, so tailored to the two of you and Bucky brushed his tongue over your bottom lip. The tingle from the gesture traveled down your spine. Before you could hold yourself back, you let his touch swallow you whole.Â
â â â
Bucky moaned, a feeling so warm and enjoyable taking over his body with every breath you stole from him. He had wanted for this to happen for weeks. And the real thing did not disappoint.Â
Your hands roamed his back until they hooked onto his shoulders and began shrugging off his coat. He tried hard to keep your lips on his during the action, not wanting to miss a single moment without them anymore. You were here, you were his, and it was perfect.Â
âBucky,â you whimpered when his thigh made its way between your legs. A move so instinctually feeling for him. But all the other women heâd been with before only seemed like practice now. Preparation to be the best lover youâve ever had and ever will have. Because you were the real thing, the grand prize, the best person to ever happen to him.Â
You ground down on his legs in rhythmic motions, Bucky could feel the heat seeping through his expensive dress pants and it made him feel even hotter. He pushed his leg higher, reveling in the sounds that came from your lips and the very knowledge he was the one providing this pleasure. There was nothing more exhilarating.Â
But still, it wasnât enough. âThere are too many layers of clothes between us, dove,â his wet breath brushed against your cheek as he pulled his thigh back for you to take off your jeans.Â
âYouâre so right.â You grinned and then pulled them down in one swift motion only to reveal a pink pear of panties underneath.Â
In an instant, his body was pressed to yours again, his lips attaching to yours like magnets - he couldnât get enough of the taste of you. But instead of placing his leg right back to get you that delicious friction, his hand began traveling down your front until it disappeared in your underwear.Â
If you were any other woman, Bucky wouldâve gone down on you. He would have dropped to his knees and eaten you out because he knew it was the fastest way heâd make you come. And he took pride in the fact that the women he was with always had at least one orgasm more than him. But he didnât do so with you.Â
Why?
Because Bucky Barnes got high off of your lips, and he couldnât possibly imagine not seeing your face, feeling your mouth shape in a silent scream when he would make you come for the first time.Â
So his hand had to do for now. His fingers slipped past the thin pink cotton and over your mound to gather your slickness. He gasped when he reached your heated core. âYouâre so wet for me, love. So ready.â He pecked the corner of your lips. âSo perfect.â
âYes!â You whined and pressed your pussy into his touch. Bucky immediately started to trace circles on your clit. He took his time to find the motions with which your breath staggered, or your fists clenched in his shirt. With every whimper, every stroke of his hand, he felt his dick strain his pants a little more - the aching exciting him for when he could finally sink into you.Â
âShit, donât stop. Iâm so close.â
âI donât plan on ever stopping.â He growled into your mouth, his hand movements becoming more frantic, the wet noises filling your apartment. Frankly, Bucky didnât believe he could ever stop giving you pleasure and having you writhe in his arms with deep sighs. Not until he knew how you sounded cumming on his hand, on his face, on his dick, on the sofa, on the bed, and every other surface he could possibly imagine. Your body was like ecstasy.
Your walls began to clench around his fingers, every drag becoming harder as he imagined his cock being squeezed by you instead. âThere you go, Baby. Thatâs it.â
âOH MY GOD!â You screamed as your hand pulled on his hair, your body growing rigid with pleasure and Bucky kissed every curse word from your lips.Â
After a minute, he slowly pulled his hand back, the other caressing the skin on your cheek. âAre you okay?â He whispered, his eyes boring into yours in genuine concern.Â
âAre you kidding? Iâm more than okay. That was incredible.â Bucky couldnât help the small chuckle from leaving his lips at your praise.Â
âYou look really fucking pretty when you come.â
âIâm glad. Because I want you to make me do it again.â You kissed his cheek. âAnd again.â And then you gently stroked his cock through his pants. âAnd again.â
And the second you said that Bucky pulled you onto the floor with him. He took his time removing your clothes, kissed the trial of your bra strap all the way down your shoulder, licked and bit at your hips all the way down to your ankles where he finally pulled off your underwear and pressed his lips to the soft skin of your leg. And when you were fully naked, he paused. Buckyâs eyes roamed your body, taking in every divot, every mark and curve of yours.
He sat back on his haunches, his head getting dizzy when the butterflies took over. âGod, youâre so beautiful,â Bucky softly wheezed, his hand slowly stroking your leg as you lay spread out in front of him.Â
âCome here.â You gestured with your arms open, welcoming him in your embrace with a wide smile. Bucky supported his weight with his arms on either side of your head and let your hands bury in his hair. He closed his eyes letting the warmth of your touch overtake him. Your thumbs stroked over his brows before you whispered: âLook at me.â
âYeah?â
âIâm sorry I doubted you. I feel the appreciation in the way you talk to me and touch me. It was unfair of me to assume you are your reputation.â
âNo, itâs okay. Itâs not like I made it easy for you to believe me.â
You chuckled and pressed a kiss to his lips. âWell, I do now.â Your eyes locked with his and a new fire lit within them.Â
âGood.â He smirked and then rolled you over so that you were straddling his waist. The cool wooden floor hit his bare back as you had bunched his shirt up on the way, now pulling it over his head and revealing your satisfied stare when your hands traced over his abs.
You shook your head and released a breath. âShame on me for refusing this for so long.â Your fingers passed his happy trail and began working on his belt. Buckyâs thumbs stroked your thighs as he watched you undress him, the tent in his pants ever so present and growing with every brush of your fingers.Â
âDonât worry, dove. We have all the time in the world to make up for it.â When his pants were off he pulled you forward again, kissing you ferociously. ââCause Iâm not planning on leaving.â
You smirked and ground down on his cock, interrupting his speech and ripping a guttural sound from his chest.Â
He had been holding back. Ever since you'd dragged him into that shelter, he had not touched a woman, because you had him hooked the second you had taken his hand on the way. And now he had to bite his tongue to keep himself from coming in his boxers like a school boy.Â
âAre you getting nervous, Bucky?â You grinned and moved again to tease him a little more.
âCan you blame me?â He clenched his jaw when you rocked forward again, his hand stilling your hips with a near-bruising grip. âIâve wanted you ever since I stepped foot in your shop.â
âYou did?â Your head cocked to the side, surprise washing over your face and his dick twitched making Buckyâs cheeks heat up.Â
âYes...â He confessed only to be attacked with your kisses again. He groaned and bucked his hips up until you were a moaning mess on top of him. His hands reached around you, settling on your ass and giving it a small clap.Â
âHand me my walled, baby. Itâs in my pants.â
âWhy?â
âWe need a condom if you donât want to keep dry-humping me.â He smirked, knowing, feeling there was nothing dry about this anymore. Your arousal was already drenching his boxers. The slick pushing him close to losing it.Â
âItâs okay. We donât have to, I have an IUD.âÂ
âAs much as I want to, we should be safe...â Bucky swallowed and averted his eyes in regret. âHave to get tested again.â
âOh, ok.â You were disappointed, he could tell. And Bucky was too. It was the first time he ever regretted all his one-night stands because he would kill to fuck you raw and feel all of you. And as hazy as your body made him, he could not ignore the fact that he did have several different sex partners before. It would have to wait a few weeks. And when he would come back clean, he would keep you in the bedroom for a week straight.
You must have noticed his misery because you leaned forward and kissed his cheek. Then you scooched back and retrieved the condom from his wallet. Bucky held his breath when your fingers hooked into his waistband. And when you pulled them down, his cock stood proud and thick with precum already pearling from his tip.Â
He reached for the shiny packet in your hand but you pulled your arm up, your eyes stuck on his cock. âLet me.â
âOkay,â he breathed out as he watched you rip the packet. His shaft twitched when your careful hands rolled the condom over him, another bead of precum dripping into the condom and before he could collect himself, you rubbed your pussy all over him, coating him in your arousal.Â
Buckyâs hands turned into fists at your sides as he watched you finally sink down on him - inch by inch, your heat welcomed him, his body sparking with pleasure all over. You moaned in unison when he was fully seated inside you, his cock being hugged tightly in your warmth - heâd barely held it together then.Â
You planted your hands on his abdomen and rocked forward, sending the both of you reeling. It took a second for Bucky to collect himself. His eyes closed and his nose huffing, he reminded himself of what he had promised you and what he wanted his first time with you to be. When he opened his eyes again, his hands moved over your body with determination. One setting over your breast, rolling your nipple between his fingers, the other began tracing tight circles on your clit.Â
Your head fell back, a vision of ecstasy and pleasure unfolding before him when he sent you over the edge a second time. He slowed your hips on his and rubbed your pussy with his thumb. He needed you to come again. And then again, and he had to hold out for that long. But the way your chest heaved, the light sheen of sweat forming on your skin, made his plan more than difficult.Â
It took all of Buckyâs willpower to pull you off his cock and push you to his legs. He sat up and kissed up your neck until he reached your lips. âWhat are you doing?â
âGiving you what you asked for.â He mumbled against your skin and then licked over your nipple, the other being caressed by his fingers. His free hand found its place right between your legs again and when you moaned lowly, he slipped two fingers inside you.Â
Your pussy was squelching, the lewd sound traveling across the living room as Bucky worked you towards another release. You were already squirming in his hands again. Your fists pulled at his roots, sending a shiver straight to his cock when you leaned his head back. âYouâre amazing.â Your breath was hot, fanning over his lips only to be replaced by them again. His tongue slipped inside and mimicking the movement of his fingers in your pussy.Â
âRight back at ya, dove. I can't wait to be inside you again.â
âThen what are you waiting for?â
âFor you to come again.â He bit your lip and sped up his fingers already feeling you squeeze him tightly. âSo youâre satiated when I come deep inside you, feeling you squeeze me with that perfect pussy of yours until you see stars.â
âShitshitshit. Iâm coming!â A series of curses flew past him when you pulsed around his fingers, gushing all over his hand and lap until he finished rocking you through your third orgasm.Â
âFuck,â Bucky licked your juices off his fingers and his eyes rolled back into his head.Â
âI donât think I have another in me, Bucky.â
âDonât worry, love. I got you.â And with that he hooked your legs around his waist, falling forward until you were with your back to the floor, Bucky hovering over you and aligning his length with your entrance.Â
He couldnât wait anymore, in one swift motion, Bucky fully bottomed out until his balls hit your ass. And when he was confident you were comfortable, he set a relentless pace. He had been on the edge this entire time. You had almost made him come just having him watch you let go. But there was nothing like the feeling of your pussy hugging him tightly, your body writhing beneath his, eyes squeezed shut in pleasure and nails raking down his back.Â
âYou feel so good,â he grunted and you just moaned in response.
âLook at me, please.â His hand turned your face. âI need to see you.âÂ
Bucky snapped his hips into yours even faster, your walls already clenching tightly around him and he threatened to burst. Your eyes opened and fell to his and Bucky couldnât stop his orgasm from ripping through him anymore. His strokes stuttered, his balls tightened, but he held eye contact with you, searching your hand behind his back to lock your fingers with his.Â
The white pleasure exploded within him, elevated by your own peak hitting with full force. He kissed you then, feeling like he was somewhere between heaven and your living room floor. His mind was consumed by you, his body tingling in aftershocks as he rocked you through your highs.Â
His damp chest fell into yours when you came down. He rolled on his back, taking you with him, pressed deeply into his body, his cock still buried inside you. Buckyâs chest was heaving, the last remnants of pleasure sparkling in his nerves. He kissed your hand and cuddled you closer.Â
This was what he was made for. To be with you, to be consumed by your affection and warmth.Â
He smoothed over your head and felt your lashes flutter on his skin. His heart was blooming with contentment - all the fear heâd felt to commit was miles away, lost somewhere between the Ironbar and your doorstep. There was nothing he was more sure of.Â
âLet me do this right. Let me take you out.â He whispered into your hair with a smile, trying to remember a time heâd ever been this happy.Â
You snorted as your hand gently stroked over his chest. âBucky, youâre literally ballsdeep inside of me right now.â
Bucky chuckled as well, his hand rubbed down your bare back in a soothing motion when he kissed your head. âNothing like a convincing argument, huh.â

In the past I've shared other people's musings about the different interpretations of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Namely, why Orpheus looks back at Eurydice, even though he knows it means he'll lose her forever. So many people seem to think they've found the one true explanation of the myth. But to me, the beauty of myths is that they have many possible meanings.
So I thought I would share a list of every interpretation I know, from every serious adaptation of the story and every analysis I've ever heard or read, of why Orpheus looks back.
One interpretation â advocated by Monteverdi's opera, for example â is that the backward glance represents excessive passion and a fatal lack of self-control. Orpheus loves Eurydice to such excess that he tries to defy the laws of nature by bringing her back from the dead, yet that very same passion dooms his quest fo fail, because he can't resist the temptation to look back at her.
He can also be seen as succumbing to that classic "tragic flaw" of hubris, excessive pride. Because his music and his love conquer the Underworld, it might be that he makes the mistake of thinking he's entirely above divine law, and fatally allows himself to break the one rule that Hades and Persephone set for him.
Then there are the versions where his flaw is his lack of faith, because he looks back out of doubt that Eurydice is really there. I think there are three possible interpretations of this scenario, which can each work alone or else co-exist with each other. From what I've read about Hadestown, it sounds as if it combines all three.
In one interpretation, he doubts Hades and Persephone's promise. Will they really give Eurydice back to him, or is it all a cruel trick? In this case, the message seems to be a warning to trust in the gods; if you doubt their blessings, you might lose them.
Another perspective is that he doubts Eurydice. Does she love him enough to follow him? In this case, the warning is that romantic love can't survive unless the lovers trust each other. I'm thinking of Moulin Rouge!, which is ostensibly based on the Orpheus myth, and which uses Christian's jealousy as its equivalent of Orpheus's fatal doubt and explicitly states "Where there is no trust, there is no love."
The third variation is that he doubts himself. Could his music really have the power to sway the Underworld? The message in this version would be that self-doubt can sabotage all our best efforts.
But all of the above interpretations revolve around the concept that Orpheus looks back because of a tragic flaw, which wasn't necessarily the view of Virgil, the earliest known recorder of the myth. Virgil wrote that Orpheus's backward glance was "A pardonable offense, if the spirits knew how to pardon."
In some versions, when the upper world comes into Orpheus's view, he thinks his journey is over. In this moment, he's so ecstatic and so eager to finally see Eurydice that he unthinkingly turns around an instant too soon, either just before he reaches the threshold or when he's already crossed it but Eurydice is still a few steps behind him. In this scenario, it isn't a personal flaw that makes him look back, but just a moment of passion-fueled carelessness, and the fact that it costs him Eurydice shows the pitilessness of the Underworld.
In other versions, concern for Eurydice makes him look back. Sometimes he looks back because the upward path is steep and rocky, and Eurydice is still limping from her snakebite, so he knows she must be struggling, in some versions he even hears her stumble, and he finally can't resist turning around to help her. Or more cruelly, in other versions â for example, in Gluck's opera â Eurydice doesn't know that Orpheus is forbidden to look back at her, and Orpheus is also forbidden to tell her. So she's distraught that her husband seems to be coldly ignoring her and begs him to look at her until he can't bear her anguish anymore.
These versions highlight the harshness of the Underworld's law, and Orpheus's failure to comply with it seems natural and even inevitable. The message here seems to be that death is pitiless and irreversible: a demigod hero might come close to conquering it, but through little or no fault of his own, he's bound to fail in the end.
Another interpretation I've read is that Orpheus's backward glance represents the nature of grief. We can't help but look back on our memories of our dead loved ones, even though it means feeling the pain of loss all over again.
Then there's the interpretation that Orpheus chooses his memory of Eurydice, represented by the backward glance, rather than a future with a living Eurydice. "The poet's choice," as Portrait of a Lady on Fire puts it. In this reading, Orpheus looks back because he realizes he would rather preserve his memory of their youthful, blissful love, just as it was when she died, than face a future of growing older, the difficulties of married life, and the possibility that their love will fade. That's the slightly more sympathetic version. In the version that makes Orpheus more egotistical, he prefers the idealized memory to the real woman because the memory is entirely his possession, in a way that a living wife with her own will could never be, and will never distract him from his music, but can only inspire it.
Then there are the modern feminist interpretations, also alluded to in Portrait of a Lady on Fire but seen in several female-authored adaptations of the myth too, where Eurydice provokes Orpheus into looking back because she wants to stay in the Underworld. The viewpoint kinder to Orpheus is that Eurydice also wants to preserve their love just as it was, youthful, passionate, and blissful, rather than subject it to the ravages of time and the hardships of life. The variation less sympathetic to Orpheus is that Euyridice was at peace in death, in some versions she drank from the river Lethe and doesn't even remember Orpheus, his attempt to take her back is selfish, and she prefers to be her own free woman than be bound to him forever and literally only live for his sake.
With that interpretation in mind, I'm surprised I've never read yet another variation. I can imagine a version where, as Orpheus walks up the path toward the living world, he realizes he's being selfish: Eurydice was happy and at peace in the Elysian Fields, she doesn't even remember him because she drank from Lethe, and she's only following him now because Hades and Persephone have forced her to do so. So he finally looks back out of selfless love, to let her go. Maybe I should write this retelling myself.
Are any of these interpretations â or any others â the "true" or "definitive" reason why Orpheus looks back? I don't think so at all. The fact that they all exist and can all ring true says something valuable about the nature of mythology.
