Do you miss the Pokemon GO days but feel done with the game?
Here's an alternative for you:
-Download the Merlin app.
-Make an account with Cornell lab of Ornithology.
-Go for a walk.
-Hear a bird? Hit 'Sound ID' and let the app do its thing.
-Hit 'This is my bird' and follow instructions.
Congrats! You just logged a bird sighting! Now go do another.

I think learning how to identify birds brings a lot of joy into life.
A few years ago, I could only identify the really obvious birds around my house. I could spot the cardinals in the trees calling for their dull colored counterparts. I could watch the bluejays cause mischief and annoy the squirrels. If I was lucky, I would hear the pilliated woodpecker laugh at my mom's attempts to photograph him.
But in the last year or so, I've really made an effort to learn about the birds where I live. And it's made everything more colorful, more vibrant in a way. Like little joys I spot on my day to day.
A few days ago, we figured out there was a sharpie (sharp shinned hawk) by the house. We also saw the first painted buntings of the year, although that was after we spotted the first indigo buntings.
Yesterday, at our new house, we could hear the crows and the vultures, as well as a scissor-tail fly catcher, a cardinal, and a red winged black bird somewhere in the cow field behind our house. It was really nice too because they just got new cows!
On our way back, we saw a pheboe on a fence. I love their patterns.
We passed a different cow field, and there was a red winged blackbird doing a mating dance on a tree stump for a female that we couldn't spot.
And just now, I saw a crow strut around with a piece of bread in his mouth in the abandoned parking lot of a gas station.
I really think that learning to identify the small things makes everything more entertaining, you know?

someone I follow on the bird app just announced they're starting a very exclusive private fic server because they and a bunch of other people want to talk about how much they love the fics they're reading, and as an author can I just say that a really great place to talk about a fic you love is in the comments for that fic
I understand that people are trying to create safe spaces, but as the number of comments that I get on my fics dwindles with each passing year, knowing these spaces exist where my fics are being discussed, places that I am excluded from, makes me want to write fic LESS
I mean I guess who cares, right, because if I stop writing, there's 10,000 other people that will continue...but if you participate in a fic "book club" server and you say nice things there about a fic you loved, maybe copy and paste that into a comment on AO3?
the only thing fanfic writers are asking for in return for hours of hard work is attention. please don't rob us of the one thing that we hope for when we hit "post"
