what do you think are the fundamentals in creating an original character?

Pretty big question. The biggest thing that draws me to a character is their motivation for moving through a story and your understanding of what stands in their way. The "Why aren't you at home right now?" factor. I find the most successful ones are pretty strong and clear. You shouldn't have to do mental gymnastics to get me to believe this character is worth being in the story (ie give them 400 reasons why they've been wronged, or keep adding to the pile of problems they have just because it makes them more interesting (this happens in Supernatural))

Characters should not have a throughline of "This happens and then this happens and then this..." because that isn't true to the causation nature of real life. Typically it's "This happened therefore this happened but this happened therefore this...." It's some of the best writing advice I'd heard (from the writers of southpark lol) vv

"I want to bring my brother's body back, but I don't know how" (Fullmetal Alchemist)

"I want to survive/get off this planet, but I don't know how" (Scavenger's Reign)

"I want to figure out what's going on here, but the place I'm in is purposely keeping me from it" (Severence)

"I want to pay for my cancer treatment, but it's too expensive" (Breaking bad)

"I want to find the One Piece/ become king of the pirates, but so do a lot of other people" (Monkey. D Luffy)

"I want to be Hokage, but no one believes I can do it/ things have always worked against me" (Naruto)

"I want to be with that man, but I'm a mermaid" (take a guess)

"I want to be lazy and sleep, but Odie is here" (Garfield lol)

Literally read any of those and the "therefore" is the rest of the story. OF course you can have more detailed motivations and stories/ stuff that happens in the middle of the problem-solving (duh) but when it comes down to it I shouldn't be watching a nothingburger "and then this happens while I figure out the story lol" character because it will feel like I'm wasting my time. This doesn't apply to gag-style stuff or nonsequiturs. I really like character writing, I'd take that over a good design any day.

A foul-mouthed teacher's take on Gen Alpha

Can we stop saying that gen alpha is DOOMED?! They just fucking got here!

fucksake, they just hit sixth grade. We are registering the warning signs right now; the lack of respect or empathy, the inability to read , the need for instant gratification OR ELSE, and don't get me started on this Sephora bullshit. Yeah, it's looking pretty bad.

The fact is though, we are their skibidi gyatdamn parents! This is our wakeup call to do better. So here's a list of a few things that might improve the situation.

If you've got a younger child, please do not get them on an i-pad until they are at least 4. Even as an educational tool, they are no replacement for the hands-on and interpersonal learning that their developing brain needs. Talk to them, give them blocks and balls and plenty of things that they can safely place in their mouths. These things help them build a deeper understanding of the world that later social skills and academic stuff can anchor to. At pre-school a little supervised and directed exposure to educational programs can be a good supplement, but do not leave them to use screens feely. As they get into middle school, you should still be aware. There are a lot of dangers on there that tweens don't have the experience yet to recognize and it's a lot wierder than you think.

2. On that note, If you must put them in front of the TV (no shame, it has to happen from time to time in this late-stage capitalist hellscape) for the love of fuck, please pay attention to what they are watching! I cannot begin to tell you, as a teacher, what a difference this can make. Don't trust that everything on Nick jr or Disney is your friend no matter how colorful or silly it looks. Watch a couple episodes either on your own or with them to determine if it has substance or if its values are ones you are ready to expose your children to (I was shocked when I sat down to watch the original Thomas the Tank Engine).

I'll do another post on shows I recommend sometime but as a teacher, PLEASE let most of their TV time be PBS Kids. I shit you not, I can tell the difference between the kids that primarily watched Paw Patrol and the kids that watched Dinosaur Train.

For younger kids, violence is a no, for sure; their brains are still developing and no matter how smart they are, a toddler is not prepared to process whatever nuance you as an adult may have the context for. You don't want to normalize it.

The same goes for adult humor. I have had to send too many kids to the office because of a racial slur or sexist comment that they pulled straight from Southpark or Family Guy. That shit should not be happening!

3. From obscure, seemingly cutesie philosophies that turn out to be cults, to the fucking manosphere and any number of hate-groups that have perfected the art of planting-the-seed with kids, you need to keep them off social media, including Tik-tok and Youtube. There are parenting aps that can block these and limit screen time, but even they cannot be used as a "set it and forget it" solution.

4. Failing all of this, the most important thing you can do for your kids may be to actually converse with them. Sit and watch some shows with them, listen to their interests, let them talk your ear off about their favorite game. Normalize them sharing with you and do this as early as possible. The benefits are numerouse

A. It opens up the lines of communication. You can identify trouble a lot faster and support their goals a lot easier when you have this going for you.

B. It establishes early that you are a safe person to share things with. This is invaluable as they get older, and for keeping them safe at any age.

C. It gives them a chance to utilize RECALL PRACTICE. this is an often overlooked brain booster, but recalling information so they can share it with you, actively helps gear their developing brain for future learning by making it easier for them to call on and access information at will.

D. It builds confidence When you take time to listen to them, you are showing them that their input is valuable; that the things that interest them are worth sharing. There may be times when it is not appropriate, and you can guide them on that, but giving them the respect of listening when you can will help them recognize their worth when future "friends", colleagues, and partners consistently dismiss them or shame them for it.

E. It builds socio/emotional intelligence and models respectful dialogue.

5. Read to them and with them. Even if you aren't a reader, listen to audio-books. Give them a chance to practice their reading skills and comprehension. Normalize the idea that reading is enjoyable.

5. Finally, understand this: you are not being an authoritarian when you set rules and enforce them. They are going to test boundaries, not because they are bad, not because they crave a lack of restriction, but because they need to know that they are there in order to feel secure. There are as many new fads for parenting as there are diets, but whatever parenting style you choose, be firm and consistent with your core rules and principles. your kids, and the people who have to interact with them, will be better off for it.

And cut yourself a bit of slack too. Parenting is tricky, and there are new challenges we are having to learn quickly as we go. It doesn't help that our generation caught so much shit, but we cannot simultaneously be parents AND continue to be victims. Seek out support, and give it whenever you can. We have to recognize our worth and our importance to this generation and take a stand now for their well being.

You are their parent and you play a very needed, active role in their lives.

I'll complain about habbo hotel another second then i'll move on (until it annoys me again) but i'm baffled how you can not try at all to write an aspec character and yet everyone loses their minds for him, like as if he genuinely was good representation.

(This will be a long one.)

I know some people would yell at me and tell me 'HE IS!!' and maybe he is to you because you like the character, but like he is not... objectively good representation. I'm not talking about him being evil (although, that's another subject...), i'm talking about how from what i have seen the show doesn't try to present his aspec identity at all, other than like one comment (and only about his asexuality not his aromanticism). Truthfully that man is practically a 'confirmed outside the show' character. People only lose their mind about him being an aroace icon because they like habbo hotel and they like the red edgy guy, and only because of that he is an aroace icon. Not because he is good representacion, it's just because a popular guy just happens to be confirmed aroace without showing his aroace identity at all.

I'd just roll my eyes at this and move on, but this man has become inescapable if you are aspec. I have never seen this happen with ANY aspec character, not even lily from theowlhouse, another very popular show. This man is just everywhere in aspec tags, people constantly post about him, to praise or to complain it doesn't matter anymore, people post about him being aroace over and over again. And for what. For a nothing representation. I know characters that i headcanon as aspec that have more on screen proof to be possibly aspec than arguably the most popular confirmed to be aroace character of the moment.

I barely see fans of him point out 'man i wish they wrote this better, i wish they were more upfront about it, we deserve better representation' but no i just see praise after praise, like this character invented being aroace, he just didn't show it in the show he is in

And like, there is a lot of aphobia surrounding how fans treat the character? Absolutely (but also what do you expect from fans of a deeply offensive edgy humor southpark like show). But also like, if the show bothered at all to give his identity the bare minimum to shine, i'm sure at least some people would understand better. Also there is people that don't participate in fandoms and just watch shows casually, do you think these people would know that this man is actually aroace just by watching the show? I really doubt it, maybe they would get he is ace, but not aro.

And all of this just for this guy, a nothing representation. We have complained about how we deserve on-screen representation, we deserve actual stories about us, we deserve to be a big focus on a story. But all of this is just patting writers in the head and telling them it's okay if you give us absolutely nothing or maybe crumbs, we'd be happy with just that! We'll think your character is amazing representation! Thank you for your hard work!

Not to mention all the actual real and good aspec representation that is out there, all the really good aspec characters, that either get ignored or praised for one second. He sometimes just gets this burst of love and just hugs one of his siblings or friends

I think he doesn't develop feelings easily ( infact it's kinda hard for him to, not in a bad way )but one time there was a yokai, about his size, and they really enjoyed each other

He didn't tell anyone but he got her number and they still talk and he might have small feelings for her

The reason he hates being alone because it's a PTSD thing ( that only got worse after the kraang thing )

( he was alone and in danger for most of the movie, the only reason he wasn't freaking out because he knew if he did he was fucked )

And he got possessed before he could even lose his shit

But basically I think he got kidnapped by a hunter and held him captive ( either chained, or in a cage ) for 2 days before splinter found him

( yes they searched for him for 2 days )

The hunter would shoot his gun next to the cage ( or restraints ) he was in to purposely mess with him

And if he cried he would get in his face and start yelling until raph forced himself to stop crying because of fear

It was traumatic

Splinter has his own trauma from losing his fucking kid for 2 days, but it still fucks with raph badly

He still remembers it so vividly that it feels like it had only happened a week ago

So add that in top of the kraang doing what they did to him.....

He was only holding it together for Leo tbh

He can't go to certain areas or he'll start to hear the hunter yelling in his face again, like a hallucination

It's gotten a little bit better over time but the kraang set him so far back

He was also already claustrophobic, but if anyone tries to hold him down now he just immediately throws them off

And hard

Anything that really reminds him too much of the past he just starts freaking out

So he doesn't like to be alone :)
