You don't breathe like you used to. It used to be the humes the rain carries, a small drizzle. Steady, on point even in a rush hour. Now you breathe like the cracks the mellow sun cries.

Now, I'm bestowed with the aftermath. A fragile child, alone and scared, That doesn't know what they're doing. Hiding in the closet waiting for the fumes to pass and your father to wake up. But, doesn't know how to stop it.

We'll walk past memory lane, and I can see your eyes staring for a moment too long at one. Sockets filled with ocean waves stuck in a thunderstorm. And I don't know how to get you out. I'll hear the mockingjays sing your coos till dawn and again.

I'll grab your hand, our hearts beating as one. the forest is quiet, anticipating. The birds may stop, the ground still, the waves nearing. It's perfect, isn't it? I'll ask you to breathe with me. Even if the air won't enter and the bedding crumbles, let me take your hand.

You kept turning the fluorescents into an unattainable compromise. The carousel drags you away from me, can't I hold you? I'll breathe if you'll let me, cry if you'll let me, see if you'll let me. So why am I so scared?

You fell upon me, a porcelain doll broken on the floor. Your lips spoke melancholy, again and again with anger of a wounded soldier. You entered the confession of the church, your burns, regrets. You spoke what the cigarette burned.

Even after the clock was tired, I wouldn't let time be harsh on you. And you showed me the child inside the closet, letting me kiss the tears that stained their cheeks.

I'll forever vow to be when time catches up. Next to the scared child, but instead of being alone, I'll be with them.

recently, i read the iliad for the first time and i made a "no one told me the iliad was a comedy??" list while reading it, so here's the list in its entirety!!!

- diomedes in all of book five.

- athena telling diomedes he shouldn't fight any of the gods that may show up on the battlefield, except for aphrodite, because what's she gonna do, fight back?

- athena then lecturing diomedes for NOT fighting ares, and diomedes proceeding to tell her "dude, you literally told me not to fight him, what do you want from me?"

- achilles and his pure hatred for agamemnon. someone give this man a shirt that says "number one agamemnon hater".

- achilles and agamemnon arguing the entire time they're in the vicinity of each other. every time they talked, it was like two kids coming up with every insult under the sun without outwardly cursing each other out.

- agamemnon essentially calling achilles a whiny bitch. kind of iconic.

- a popular favorite but: odysseus going around and beating the men who wanted to leave with a fancy ceremonial stick. it just never gets old.

- odysseus being that one guy who never shuts up about his kid while beating the living shit out of thersites. he very proudly calls himself the "father of telemachus" while verbally and physically abusing this man.

- odysseus once again referring to himself as the "loving father of telemachus" when agamemnon is trying to piss him off so he'll join the battle. i'm pretty sure this is a fairly common thing for odysseus to do, and you got to love him for it.

- another popular favorite: agamemnon mourning his very-much-so-still-alive younger brother after menelaus gets shot by an arrow in the thigh. menelaus quickly realizes he's fine and asks his brother to stop lamenting his "death" because if he keeps it up, he's gonna spook the rest of the men and that's just not what they need right now.

- and then agamemnon immediately being like "oh, word? okay, but you need a doctor- SOMEONE GET THE DOCTOR!"

- athena grabbing achilles' hair during the argument between achilles and agamemnon in book one when achilles is deadass about to just kill agamemnon because he's mad as hell. she then proceeds to tell achilles to call agamemnon names instead and books it.

- helen being the bad bitch she is whenever she's on the page, despite her circumstances. not only does she flat out tell paris she wishes he had been killed, but she basically tells aphrodite to bed paris herself, which is ballsy as fuck and i have nothing but respect for her.

- speaking of paris: hector absolutely TEARING into paris after he flees from fighting menelaus one-on-one. he really just says that paris is only good for looking pretty he wishes paris had never been born which, honestly, good for him.

- priam asking helen to point out the various greek leaders and immediately calling agamemnon handsome. idk why but it made me chuckle just a bit.

- priam also comparing odysseus to a ram, which is such a wonderful visual and i think about it a lot.

- antenor, one of priam's advisors, recognizing odysseus when helen points him out and immediately going: "oh, that motherfucker, i remember him. he looks like an idiot, but man, does he know how to use his words to win over a crowd."

- nestor essentially saying "back in my day-" every time he opens his damn mouth. i love him and he never shuts up once he gets going.

- diomedes telling glaucus he's "not one to fight the heavenly gods" immediately after fighting not one, but TWO of said heavenly gods.

- athena and hera wanting to throw hands with zeus in book 8.

- athena and hera ALSO being petty as all hell and actively ignoring zeus after he told them to stand down. deserved, if you ask me.

- diomedes calling odysseus a coward when asking for odysseus to help him save hector.

- "stubborn odysseus" then ignores him, and runs back to the ships. honestly, don't know what diomedes was expecting, calling the guy a bunch of names.

- hector and greater ajax throwing ROCKS at each other in the middle of battle.

- diomedes scolding agamemnon for suggesting that the greeks retreat. the guy had it coming, and diomedes read him like a book and it was beautiful.

- odysseus not calling achilles by name after he and greater ajax came back from an attempt to persuade achilles to forgive agamemnon. he really just told agamemnon and the rest of the greek lords: "this guy is an asshole, y'all, he's still all worked up about it. ain't no way we getting him off his ass to fight."

- the entirety of book 10 feels like a fever dream and i'm kind of obsessed, regardless of what historians/classicists have to say about it. like wdym diomedes and odysseus go out on a little night time stroll while the greek camp is under siege, kill a bunch of men, and come back with some fancy ass horses and weapons??

- nestor kicking poor diomedes awake when diomedes was sleeping on the ground in front of his tent. like, damn old man, you could at least try to see if he'd wake up if you called his name or some shit.

- this is also funny as fuck when you consider that literally a few hours ago, diomedes busted his ass to save nestor's life. this is why we don't help people, kids.

- odysseus telling diomedes that there was no need for diomedes to praise him because "everyone knows i'm hot shit dude, let's just go and get this over with."

- diomedes calling paris a "sleazy flirt" after paris shot him in the foot with an arrow. he calls him a LOT of names, but he basically just calls paris a cowardly, weak-ass slut, which is spot on if i'm being totally honest.

- odysseus immediately trying to mentally hype himself up after diomedes left him alone on the battlefield. he really just stood there like "oh fuck, i can't run because i'm not a spineless coward but i'm all alone out here what the fuck am i gonna do!!!??" gotta feel a little bad for the guy.

- diomedes' and hector's beef. they HATE each other and it honestly cracks me up. diomedes is constantly ragging on hector for being babied by apollo and hector basically keeps saying diomedes is a rabid animal that's out of control.

- hector telling his horses they're lucky because andromache gives them the good wine first, before he gets any. he really said "my wife loves me but i guess she loves you guys more, how the FUCK did you get so lucky???"

- idomeneus and meriones running into each other in the greek camp while everyone else is fighting. fully imagined them just standing there and pointing at each other like: "yo, dude, what are you doing here?"

- meriones, instead of going to his own tent, decides to take a spear from idomeneus and basically tells idomeneus "dude, my tent is so far, please don't make me go all the way out there and just let me borrow one of yours."

- idomeneus being totally chill with it, so long as they hurry the fuck up and no one sees them away from the battlefield because then people will think they're cowardly losers.

- patroclus.

- no further notes on this one, just patroclus. what a guy.

- agamemnon trying to convince the rest of the greeks to retreat in the middle of battle. AGAIN.

- and agamemnon keeps on doing this, throughout several books at this point, and it's actually kind of impressive. i guess he really just wants to leave troy because he's sick and tired of NOT winning all the time.

- odysseus having absolutely none of this and immediately putting agamemnon on blast. odysseus literally curses him and calls agamemnon pathetic and dishonorable. preach it, king.

- and agamemnon actually listens to odysseus and immediately goes "shit, you right, my bad."

- posideon and zeus beefing in book 15.

- specifically posideon basically saying that if zeus doesn't let the greeks win, he's never going to forgive zeus. peak sibling behavior.

- meriones and aeneas shit-talking each other in the middle of a very intense, very important battle.

- this is immediately followed by patroclus telling meriones to "stop yapping and throw hands".

- in retrospect, patroclus probably regrets saying that, given that throwing hands is what got his ass killed.

- patroclus throwing a massive rock at some trojan, effectively killing the poor guy, then proceeding to mock the way the trojan fell as he died. absolutely FOUL behavior and it made me giggle just a little bit.

- i should probably mention that this "poor guy" was cebriones, hector's current charioteer and half-brother. hector's proceeding crash out was completely understandable, when you think about it.

- odysseus reminding achilles of the importance of breakfast. eat your breakfast people!!!

- odysseus also telling achilles to "shut the hell up because i'm older and therefore wiser and i know what i'm talking about so zip it and let me speak".

- aeneas telling achilles to stop yapping on the battlefield when it was actually HIM who was in the middle of a good old homeric "this is my dad and this was his dad and his dad did this" speech.

- achilles damn near about to crash out when apollo kept protecting hector. this man tried to kill hector FOUR TIMES and apollo just yanked hector out of the way each time. achilles was like "oh, so apollo favors you? yeah, well, if any of the gods like me, next time i see you, i'm gonna FUCK YOU UP!!!"

- achilles beefing with a river.

- like dude, stop KILLING people in the water, you're clogging the river and that's just not cool. respect the environment, asshole.

- book 21 is really just "angry man yells at river before being swept away by the waters of divine fury".

- athena decking ares and aphrodite. she was really sick and tired of them at this point.

- posideon essentially calling apollo a little shit when apollo kept siding with the trojans.

- apollo sending achilles on a wild goose chase while disguised as a trojan. it's giving tom and jerry, i can't even lie.

- achilles beefing with apollo. just in general.

- this can also be extended to: apollo beefing with achilles. and we all know how that ends!!!

- hector being bamboozled by his own idea of trying to beg for mercy and understanding from achilles. he really was like "why the fuck am i trying to problem solve this, the guy wants me dead. ain't no way he's gonna listen to anything i say".

- a popular favorite that i think deserves a quick mention: hector and achilles running around troy three fucking times. tom and jerry part two????? except this is an alternate universe where tom catches jerry and it's not pretty.

- nestor giving antilochus advice on how to win the chariot race even though antilochus knows what he's doing.

- this is extra funny when antilochus turns around and cheats to get ahead of menelaus. an asshole move, but so incredibly real and i can't even say i blame him.

- apollo knocking diomedes' whip out of his hand during the race. out of spite.

- it's actually because diomedes had taken aeneas' horses in book 5 and diomedes was using them in the race, but still. petty and spiteful and i love it.

- athena immediately rushing to grab the whip to return it to diomedes. athena is playing favorites again and she's not even trying to hide it.

- lesser ajax and idomeneus bickering during the chariot race. SPECIFICALLY idomeneus telling lesser ajax "young man, you're real good at arguing and bitching, but man, where the fuck are your brains at?"

- the ONE TIME achilles is mentioned smiling is when antilochus is throwing a fit about not receiving his due prize and i think that's beautiful.

- achilles really saw his friend complaining and said "that's my bro how can i NOT give him exactly what he wants?"

- menelaus tearing into antilochus and shaming him for cheating during the race in front of everyone.

- mans really told antilochus to swear on posideon that he didn't cheat so of course antilochus is like "shit shit i can't make that oath because i did cheat and i am NOT getting on the shit list of any god".

- so antilochus is like "okay menelaus, my bad old man, i'm just so young and spry that i can't help myself sometimes".

- and then he just gives menelaus the mare that was the second place prize to avoid making an untrue oath while STILL managing to insist he won fair and square.

- smart guy.

- menelaus also being like "okay, i forgive you because you are usually pretty well behaved so let's just chalk this up to like, temporary insanity or something".

- AND THEN menelaus gives the mare BACK to antilochus.

- menelaus is a softie at heart and antilochus knew it and absolutely took advantage of it and WON. bro played the long game and it was so worth it. this whole sequence was so entertaining to me, can you tell?

- nestor, the absolute icon that he is, once again going off on one of his rants. everyone say "i heart nestor".

- the footrace between lesser ajax, odysseus, and antilochus.

- namely odysseus praying to athena to help him win the race, which she does, of course. she gives odysseus a little boost and she TRIPS lesser ajax, which causes him to fall face first into a pile of cow shit.

- it gets in his mouth and nose y'all, it's nasty as fuck.

- i also think it's funny that odysseus is the oldest of the three of them, and even without athena's help at the end he was right behind lesser ajax the entire time.

- of course i have to mention lesser ajax whining about the fact that athena dotes on odysseus like a mother.

- and odysseus not saying anything to argue because he knew lesser ajax wasn't really wrong about that.

- antilochus also saying that the gods have a habit of favoring old men.

- old man odysseus for the win!!!!!

- it also cracks me up at how obvious it is that achilles favors antilochus y'all, it's HILARIOUS.

- antilochus goes after the race and starts talking about how "odysseus is an old man, but boy, he's almost as fast as achilles!" and achilles is over here like "yeah, he totally is, you're so right. here, have some more gold for being my number one hype man".

I like this addition, and actually, PCCP is useful for once here because I'm not particularly concerned with offending him. Please skip this additional chatter if you're not in the mood for it, lol

To expound on the Context point and the level of seriousness, well before worse problems came up, I a number of times in private had convos with people about why I simply couldn't read PCCP's stuff, and I said something along the lines of, "It reads like infantilization kink* without being presented or tagged as kink."

Kink and jokes are both areas that require some nuance in evaluation. Like, I'm typing here with the username I have and anyone who's seen me around knows I'm more likely to be joking and/or kinking in my fannish output than I am to be wholly serious. Mutual understanding between creators and audiences about the intended context of the text --kink, joke, analysis, criticism, etc. etc.-- can make or break something.

If you see me draw Ed sitting in a kitten Adopt Me basket, you can probably guess there's some intentional level of absurd involved and it's not to be taken as serious analysis of the character. If I did what PCCP did and wrote wholly sincere meta and fic about Ed being helpless at day to day tasks and needing Stede to manage him**, it's going to creep up on you that some genuine opinion about Ed's ability and agency is at play here.

And kink and jokes are not always going to land for everyone, which is why you want to be upfront and self-aware about what you're doing and what who you're interacting with is doing. And use the mute and block functions various places because not everything's for everyone, etc. Then take that a step further, while kink and jokes do have more leeway than Serious Discussion, they still exist in the world and can reinforce stereotypes if it's the only way you talk about things. To stick with the helplessness humor I first used above, there's a viral screenshot that went around of a girl texting her dad the excuse of "Sorry, I'm just a girl" and his response "I don't know what the means but it sounds like it minimizes you as a person." Something being just a joke doesn't mean it's harmless if the humor relies on a harmful stereotype being true, so you go through a process like: Is this meant to be taken seriously or is it a joke, is it a kink, is it satire, is this intentionally presented as such? Am I reading it as intended? And then, if it is humor or titillation or absurdity, does it still rely upon and therefore imply something about the author's worldview? Is there another way to take it in good faith/have I potentially missed something?

Extreme Tangent, holy shit, please skip this if you don't find this kind of blathering interesting: Gonna get up on one of my more personal soapboxes here, but while the specific questions vary case to case from what I said there and what jellybeanium listed, the general idea of interrogating anything by looking at author, intent, context, etc. is something your school system should have made you practice until it became second nature both for fiction and non-fiction, and if your school system failed you, which many did, it's never too late to choose to learn, whether you want to do it in fandom or not.*** We can go on forever about the lists of facts schools do or don't teach, but the primary things imo they should teach are the processes for figuring things out-- the critical thinking needed for media literacy, the scientific process, and yeah, sorry to the internet, some math. They're tools you can pick apart most things with, which anyone can use but especially, man, for the fellow neurodivergents out there, you can figure out a lot about what's going on around you even if it's not as easy as for other people. The asterisks from above: *Infantilization Kink, like most kinks, is not inherently evil and harmful when just treated with intent and awareness and kept in its proper setting. PCCP was a dick who at best didn't know how to separate his kink from his meta which he then tried to enshrine with fake authority. **Having disabilities and quirks and flaws that mean you need help is not bad either, but there is a world of difference between having the agency to determine what you need from other people and ask for it on your terms, and a benevolent savior who comes in and handles those evaluations and choices for you that you have been deemed incapable of making for yourself. ***I do actually think it's okay to say fuck it, fandom is my escapism, I don't want to think about things too hard here. We're all just trying to get through our days, bud. Please get through your day, but if someone's like "hey, this thing is harmful," and you keep doing it without evaluation whether it might be or not****, or some form of mitigation like tagging or venue choice (making or finding space where you and people you're at odds with don't having to step on each other's toes while doing escapism), you've made it harder for them to get through their day, which doesn't seem necessary. ****And yes sometimes reasonable people can disagree about things, and sometimes people are acting in bad faith because every part of the internet has some jerks, sometimes there's people who really dislike something but either aren't self-aware enough to pinpoint why or think that they won't be respected if they stick to expressing personal opinions instead of couching things as social ills, sometimes people's contexts or mental abilities differ to the point where things come across very different to them, etc etc etc. Figuring out whether something is a genuine concern expressed in good faith with proper context or not is a thing you just gotta do if you're going to engage with someone.

And still, nothing here is about someone specific (except that one dude), and good faith disagreements are possible. I'm just sitting in a barrel blathering.

Not in response to any one specific take, but how much of the grey area for people in the back and forth about the ethics of babygirling is due in part to the conflation of cuteness and incompetence? The girls and the gays and especially the bottoms can't math can't drive need jars opened etc etc etc type humor that I would say is rampant on tumblr and tiktok, because it is, if that didn't obfuscate that it's an old trope across like all of society.

Because there's a lot of other sources of cuteness, most of which aren't demeaning --personally I'm a fan, one will note, of dresses and plushies and sparkly eyes, etc.-- but there's a lot of internet culture built up around treating helplessness as charming. And perhaps on this specific part of the internet, there's a somewhat high rate of neurodivergent people who are invested in various inabilities being treated as lovable.

Stick that in a blender with race and you can have at the exact same time both the legacy of black and brown people not being allowed the affection of being seen as cute/pretty and the legacy of black and brown people being seen as incapable. Add in a general lack of specificity, and while we're at it, some people who just don't seem to like certain tropes because it's just not their thing holding grudges and some other people defensive because it is their thing, and honestly, any time I stick my eyeballs back on tumblr it doesn't seem like anything like actual synthesis is happening.

Idk, but this late night post is not actually in defense of or accusatory towards any Thing Someone Did so much as general meta musing about how people talk about things.

It physically pains me to read that Viktor and Jayce have a rift between them. Barely acknowledging each other? Ugh???? I'm so sad. Right from the beginning of the chapter, you can feel that Jayce wants things to go back to normal. He just doesn't know how to fix it yet.

I feel so much empathy for Jayce, how the curiosity about Viktor's secret crush is eating him alive. And the rejection from Viktor hit him square in the chest. All he heard was "I don't want you" even though that's not what Viktor meant. Oh sweet sweet Jayce. You poor thing. Jayce has been so comfortable with their level of intimacy while being totally oblivious to what it means for the two of them. It's interesting to see him finally facing some negative consequences for walking through life unaware of his own feelings for Viktor. He deserves this pain, honestly.

And maybe he'll learn something because of it??

"Jayce's heart plummeted to his feet like an anvil thrown in the river Pilt." God, what a beautiful description. I feel it in my bones.

The way Jayce is so perceptive too? Like he can see that Viktor isn't really angry with him, that it's more like he's afraid of something and Jayce can't tell what it is yet. The puzzle pieces are fitting into place, slowly but surely. THEY KNOW EACH OTHER. Damn it, even when they're having a conflict, they know each other.

It’s satisfying to see the way that Jayce’s priorities have realigned to favor Viktor’s health over everything else. We see him do that in canon when he finds out Viktor is ill, but it’s much too late at that point. The rift had already grown too wide between them. But in this timeskip period, there’s still a chance for Jayce to salvage their bond. The small ways that Jayce and Viktor’s actions echo their characterization from the show is what makes this fic so believable. It’s so immersive.

Okay when Jayce goes into Heimerdinger’s office and worries about entering without permission, I rolled my eyes. He’s so silly. Maybe he’s a little afraid to go to jail again, for trespassing this time? Breaking and entering is no fun if Viktor’s not there too, I guess.

When he writes the note to Heimerdinger and notes that the page is already signed with his own name; Jayce has never been as oblivious as he is in that moment. After thinking about the list of names too! The torture of knowing he’s so close to the truth, yet so far from it. Damn you, Jayce.

Ooooooo when Jayce overhears Viktor discussing things with Heimerdinger, I was locked in. I love a good eavesdropping scene. The tension! The drama! Learning secrets! When a trope is done right, it works so well. Lowkey one of my favorite things about this fic so far is that when a storytelling trope is included, it never feels forced. It always serves a purpose within the narrative and doesn’t feel like it was purely there for the reader to giggle at. Although don’t get me wrong, I’m kicking my feet and smiling at all of emotional reveals.

Heimerdinger tries and fails to convince Viktor to leave Piltover, in an effort to stop the progression of his hanahaki. Honestly thrilled to get more details about Viktor’s feelings on the matter.

“Leaving him isn’t an option.” Oh Viktor. I’m crumpling onto the floor in a puddle. The devotion is too strong. He thinks Jayce is worth dying for.

Overhearing this is what makes Jayce finally shift out of denial and into acceptance that Viktor isn’t dealing with a passing crush. Viktor is truly in love. And this acceptance of that fact leads Jayce to FINALLY realize why he’s been acting the fool lately.

Jealousy.

For some reason (we all know why), Jayce is jealous of the man Viktor loves. Hmmm, how could that be? Maybe because you find Viktor extremely attractive both physically and emotionally, huh Jayce? It’s a big step for him to finally give a name to this thing he’s been feeling for multiple chapters. Proud of him!!!!! Still mad at him for shutting down his thoughts about Viktor being handsome but hey, he’ll get there eventually.

Classic moment having an animal ruin the eavesdropping. I laughed at that. Especially Jayce saying “go away” aaaaaa it’s like a rom-com, I’m obsessed.

Oh my god and when Jayce goes into the office, the way they share a moment as Viktor leaves???? Ugh it’s giving Pride and Prejudice hand touch. The eye contact, the tension, but also the softness?

Mad at Heimerdinger for not giving them a free pass on Progress Day when Viktor is literally dying, but uhhhh points for realism there. Capitalism waits for no one. Don’t mind me over here, crying softly.

And in true Jayce fashion, he stubbornly argues that Heimerdinger failed to convince Viktor to leave Piltover because he didn’t try hard enough. Jayce is convinced that he could do it. And go with Viktor. Of course. (Which is obviously a PROBLEM) Adorable how Jayce immediately starts rattling off a plan that includes himself. As if there’s never a world where Jayce and Viktor aren’t attached at the hip. They’re so in love, I can’t handle it.

Okay is Heimerdinger going to meddle and help Jayce figure out his feelings? The way he was staring him down…the gears were turning.

“Keep him busy,” Heimerdinger says. UM WHAT? Okay sign Viktor’s death certificate right now. He’s dead. So dead. Jayce is going to distract him with happy memories they’ve shared and unintentionally put Viktor right into the coffin. Oh no no no.

Jayce finally gets a chance to apologize, and oh boy is he just the sweetest man there ever was? He’s so honest and open. He really values Viktor’s friendship more than anything. Viktor melts back into their casual banter and I regain all of the years of life I lost at the cliffhanger from the last chapter. Thank god they’re not mad at each other anymore.

When Jayce shared his vision for them escaping out of Piltover together, I can’t even articulate how happy it made me. He’s so in love and doesn’t even know it. The genuine surprise Viktor was probably feeling to hear that. Like he never considered Jayce would run away with him. But Jayce thinks it’s obvious, and they’d have a library and a pet and a garden. Oh fuck me up. I’m going to cry.

Oh oh oh is the little transport robot thing going to be canon in this fic? I don’t know much about it but it seemed like a hint.

And uh, yeah they are obnoxiously flirting at the end. No one can tell me otherwise. Get a room, you two! When they tease each other, it’s my favorite thing. I love it so much.

(Something tells me Jayce’s excellent idea is going to backfire…)

kadou at one point calls evemer 'tricksy' which had me screaming...gollum moment

why is evemer so obsessed with being trusted? what's HIS baggage? he doesn't really seem to have anything going on in his backstory.

he really is quite like lwj. not expressive, strict with himself, rule-abiding to the point of rigidity, solitary, only opens up to his mom...but like, what great hurt is HE hiding? lwj was in mourning since he was 6 years old, and it informed his behavior towards wwx later in the story. evemer might have more internal depth, but he doesn't appear to have much in the way of backstory and I kind of doubt his character is going to develop very much beyond 'coming to realize kadou is The Guy He Wants To Serve' and then falling in love etc.

it's nice to see him talk back more to kadou...honesty is important

it's pretty neat how deftly the author is juggling this complex relationship dynamic and how completely they're avoiding boiling the interactions down the mere jealously or desire or Love. kadou cares for tadek and respects him and doesn't want to hurt him and he also really likes evemer in a genuinely serious way and tadek really cares abt kadou and is loyal to him and IS a little jealous of evemer bc he feels like he's been pushed aside and he kind of has, and evemer thinks low of tadek but his opinion is improving...but tadek isn't an antagonist or a bitter ex and he's still likeable and important and kind and loyal...it's interesting

and he's also not in love w kadou. like he loves him and he is deeply loyal and affectionate but I don't think he's IN love

I was worried this would play into orientalist tropes but besides some titles and names of food and instruments, this setting doesn't seem to have much of a connection to the real-life SWANA region. names, religion, the social and cultural system, geography...all looks original to the book. I'm a bit disappointed (I liked the passion and research that infused SFC's city of brass series), but at least there's not much of stereotypes to worry about. and COB handled many things...very clumsily. this isn't a book abt geopolitics and I'm glad

I DO find it a little annoying when royals are like 'oh woe is me I must marry for something besides love' but the narrative recognizes that this is just the assumption for the rest of the kingdom and not the reality necessarily. like kadou has his every need seen to, is unimaginably wealthy, is extremely well-educated and well-cared for, and has a retinue of personal guards to see to his every comfort. he does have those attacks but when he genuinely starts complaining about his position I'm like. dude come on

to his credit he usually doesn't tho! that would be unbearable. the narrative doesn't talk much abt the other people in the city or kingdom except the guards have an insane schedule but they ARE the future government and they get paid like crazy so it's kind of like doctors doing insane hours right. not that 72z-hr weeks are GOOD. damn

WHUMPTOBER is a month-long, prompt-based creation challenge (think: Inktober, but whumpier). There are 31 official themes this year - one for each day of the month - which can be used, skipped, or combined in any way you’d like. They are meant to serve as inspiration without being taken literally (e.g. you don’t have to include the exact wording of prompts into your work). Feel free to run rampant on interpretation. For example, if the prompt is “flame", you could create something with reference to a candle/campfire, your character could have suffered a burn, or the flame could be a reference to an ‘old flame’ - an old relationship. It’s truly down to you!

In total, there are 4 prompts for each day. These are optional suggestions and can be used in conjunction with the theme, or as options/alternatives.  We want to give everyone as much creative freedom as possible, as well as increase event accessibility for folks with triggers and squicks. There is also a list of 15 alternative prompts that can be subbed in for any day, again to give participants as much creative freedom as possible.

Creators can PRODUCE work in any media they choose, including but not limited to: writing, visual artwork, photo/video/audio edits, paper crafts and elaborate recommendation lists (not just a list of links). Creators can PARTICIPATE as much or as little as they want (i.e. you don’t have to do ALL the prompts if you don’t want to) and prompts can be used in any order. They are also free to use even after the event ends.

Whumpers who produce content for 31 total theme days are considered event completionists and will be tagged in a masterpost at the end of the month. A form will be published at the beginning of November asking you to tell us if you completed. This is based on trust and we will not check this.

TIMELINE

July: Trope voting form released. Late August: Prompt list is released for at least four weeks of preparation time. Tropes cannot be posted earlier than August 25th because of Moderator obligations in real life. (But, you know, go ahead and start writing/drawing, and add the themes in later, if you want!) September: Do as much or as little on your works as you want. You can prepare everything in advance or let September go by with vibes and start working in October. It’s up to you. October 1st: Challenge begins! A storm of whump breaks upon us all! During this time, some posts will be reblogged to the whumptober archive blog. We open the yearly AO3 collection for posting (optional). November 1st: The challenge is officially over! Completionist form opens for those who want to be included in the hall-of-fame. Early November: We release completionist and participant badges, solicit feedback, and post a hall-of-fame list of completionists by the 10th.

PARTICIPATION AND COMPLETION

Q: What counts as participation? Create or continue at least one work inspired by one of this year’s prompts. Q: What counts as completion? Creating work(s) inspired by at least one prompt from each day (or alts), for a total of 31 unique prompts. Q: Do I need to create 31 works? No. You can, if you want. Or you can create one work that you add to every day with a new prompt. Or several works that combine prompts. You can also update an existing work by adding new material with the current prompts. Q: Do I need to post my works somewhere to be a completionist or a participant? No. Q: How do you know I actually completed the challenge? We’ll take your word for it! Q: Do I have to finish my work(s) to be a completionist? No, you can post WIPs. And you’re not obligated to finish them in October, but if you want it to count towards being a completionist, you must have completed 31 prompts by the end of the month. So for example, if you’re writing a long fic and you fit 31 different prompts into the writing you did in October, it’s okay if that fic isn’t finished by the time October ends, you’ll still be a completionist. Q: Is co-writing/illustrating allowed? Yes, absolutely, and it would count towards being a completionist for both/all of you. Q: Is there a min/max limit on word count for written works? No. Q: Is there a min/max limit of quality for art? No. Q: Do I have to do something each day to be a completionist? No. You can skip days whenever you want, and as long as 31 daily prompts (or alts) are in your works done in October, you can be a completionist. For example, if you wrote a 1000-word ficlet that covers prompts in days 2, 3, and 17, you can check all three days off your list even though it’s only one work. Q: Is this challenge just for fics? No! Artworks, GIFsets, headcannons, rec lists, poetry, moodboards, or any other creative work is encouraged. Q: Can I combine Whumptober with other creation challenges? Absolutely, as long as the other challenges allow it too.

PROMPTS

Q: How do the prompts work? There are FOUR prompts per day: a theme and three ideas. You can use one, two, three, or all four prompts for each day. If you don’t like any of the daily prompts, you can substitute one of the ALT prompts instead. Q: How strictly/literally should we interpret the prompts? As literally or as figuratively as you want. For example, if the theme is WATER, that could mean drowning, waterboarding, raining, swimming, take place underwater, be lost at sea, construct a metaphor about a character’s mood that changes like a flowing river, crying, or whatever else you can think of that fits that theme. Q: Can I combine prompts? Is there a limit on how many? No limit and combine as many as you’d like. If you create a work that checks off multiple prompts, that work will count for a fill of multiple prompts. Q: What’s whump? Hurting a character, whether that’s physically, emotionally, intellectually, psychologically, or any other way you can think of. Comfort afterwards is optional. Angst is emotional whump, so it counts. Q: How do I know if it’s whumpy enough? If your character is just mildly inconvenienced, it probably needs more whump. However, no participant has to prove whumpiness to the mods. Whatever you write is up to you. Q: What kind of characters can I create for? Anything. Generic “whumpee,” OC, PC, NPC, major characters, minor characters, or whatever you want. There are no limits. Q: Does it have to take place in a specific fandom? No, you can create works for your own worlds or for fandoms or for both. You can also create more generic or pan-fandom works. You can do cross-overs or use OCs, whatever you want. Q: Can I create AI-created works? We will not reblog or promote any works we know to be generative AI-created. Q: Is there anything we’re not allowed to write? As long as it contains whump and is based on our prompts, it’s fine. Please courtesy tag your works if you post them so people who follow the #whumptober2024 tag can filter according to their preferences. Q: What about sex, minor characters, and potentially disturbing content? You can create whatever works are legal in your country and post them accordingly. POSTING

Q: Where can I post my work? Post where and how you want. You don’t even have to (cross)post it to Tumblr. Just keep in mind if it’s not on Tumblr we will not be able to add it to the blog archive. There is an AO3 archive for Whumptober 2024, as well as the parent collection for works completed outside of the event. Q: Can I start posting early? You can, but this is an October event and wouldn’t it be more fun with everyone doing it at the same time? We won’t be reblogging any work predating October 1st. Q: Can I post late? Yes. For the sake of our hardworking Post Fairies, only a day’s themes will be reblogged to @whumptober-archive each day of October. But you can post whenever. Some of us are still working on and posting Whumptober fics from years ago. Q: Do I have to use your tags? Only on Tumblr and only if you want us to reblog your work on @whumptober-archive. Q: How do I have my works reblogged to the archive? Properly tagged posts will be reblogged to @whumptober-archive. If you want the official archive blog to reblog you, post on Tumblr and tag correctly (see this FAQ link for more info on tagging). Please note not all posts will be reblogged each day. Q: Can we @ you? For questions and comments, of course. We’ll be getting a flood of notifications, so if you really want us to see something send an ask. Q: Can I cross post on other blogs? Yes, multiple platforms and blogs are perfectly acceptable, as long as they allow cross-posting (to us). You can also post different works to different accounts under different names, without posting them everywhere at once. If you post some works under your main and others under an alt blog, that’s fine for completionist purposes. Q: Can I upload/repost my Whumptober content to other social media platforms? Of course! We’ve created an AO3 Collection to archive any fics posted there, which can be found here. "Hey, maybe he can help," Robin says, sweeping a hand towards Dustin who's just walked into Family Video for his regularly scheduled afterschool bug Steve and Robin time, interrupting their conversation.

"Oh come on." Steve shakes his head. "The kid doesn't want to hear about my trash heap of a love life."

"Oh, no, I absolutely want to hear about that." Dustin perks up at the opportunity to learn about Steve's trivial suffering.

"We're trying to figure out why Steve goes on a million dates but can't seem to find someone he actually likes," Robin fills Dustin in. "Tell him, Steve."

Steve groans, dragging his hands over his face before splaying them out sarcastically, as that's the only thing he can really do in protest right now. Dustin's looking at him expectantly, and Steve has no choice but to tell the kid all about Linda and Heidi and Brenda and Lucy and whoever else he's been out with recently, doing his best to answer any subsequent questions as PG as possible.

"Well of course you haven't found the one yet, you keep trying to date a bunch of normal, basic, girly girls. That's not your type," Dustin informs him once Steve's done talking.

Steve raises his eyebrows. "Oh, it isn't?"

"You can't really be that stupid, can you?"

"No, please, Henderson, enlighten me on what you think my type is."

"You're into nerds," he says like it's completely obvious.

Steve scoffs. "I am not into nerds. You know, just because I hang around you little weirdos all the time does not actually mean I want to hang around even more weirdos in all the other aspects of my life too."

"Seriously, Steve, think about it," Dustin argues. "Think of all the girls you've actually been really genuinely into in your life. They've all been nerds! Nancy-"

"- is not a nerd."

"She's a straight-A student and a journalism super geek. She's a nerd."

Steve rolls his eyes and sighs grudgingly. "Alright, fine, but-"

"And you were into Robin-"

Robin wrinkles her nose. "Ugh, don't remind me."

"-who you can't deny is definitely a nerd," Dustin continues.

"You know what, actually, he does have a point," Robin says.

Steve looks at her in betrayal. "Don't encourage him!"

"That girl you told me about that you liked in middle school who was super into Star Trek, and the other one who wanted to write a fantasy novel one day- oh and the elementary school crush who was always reading a new book every day..." Robin lists, ticking each one off on her fingers.

"I told you all that in confidence!"

"They were all nerds!"

"Exactly." Dustin grins, vindicated and insufferably smug. "Ergo, you, Steve Harrington, need to find yourself a nerd."

"I am not into nerds!" Steve protests hopelessly.

"What more proof do you need?" Dustin says. "You're into nerds."

"Totally into nerds," Robin concurs.

Steve huffs and throws up his hands. "Fine! I'll admit I'm into nerds if it will make you two shut up about it!"

Eddie happens to wander into the previously empty store at that exact moment, catching the tail end of the conversation as he approaches the counter. "What's all this about nerds?"

Steve freezes, glances Eddie over and stares at him strangely for a few long seconds. "Holy shit," he mutters.

His gaze cuts to Robin, whose eyes go wide when she meets his look. "Holy shit," she agrees.

"Oh my god."

"Oh my god."

"Dude."

"Dude!"

Eddie blinks at them. "Are you two having some sort of joint stroke or something?" He looks at Dustin as if the kid might have a better clue of what's going on. "Can you understand them?"

Dustin shrugs, equally mystified. "Don't look at me, man. They're weird."

The incomprehensible parroting conversation is still going on.

"Okay," Steve's saying, taking a deep breath in through his nose and exhaling determinedly.

"Okay?"

"Okay."

"Okay." Robin grins and shoves at his shoulder.

Steve finally turns back around and leans on the counter in front of Eddie with a classically charming smile. "So, Eddie, are you free on Saturday?"

Eddie smiles back despite his confusion. "Yeah-"

"Oh my god!" Dustin bursts out suddenly.

"Oh my god," Robin agrees with a knowing smirk.

Eddie glances at Dustin. "Oh no, not you too."

Steve exhales a long-suffering sigh and pushes himself off the counter, marching around to grab Eddie by the hand and drag him away from Dustin and Robin. "So. Saturday?"

"He's into nerds," Dustin whispers, wide-eyed.

Robin nods sagely. "He's into nerds."

FINALLY starting to feel a little better about christmas though i only have two things on me and one thing ordered BUT i got a list of books from my mom so i can order those when i order the cookbook for my sister in law and my mom also mentioned something my sister wants that i could get, gonna do most of the kids' shopping on friday, still need ideas for my nephew and godson though, plus i have general ideas for my dad and brother lol you guys are getting gift cards and a little something else bc you are too difficult for me to shop for ANYWAY like i am going to make progress in the coming days so it's fine
