welcome to surprise nadia nova how to make a visual novel tutorial

you want to 100% use ren'py i dont make the rules

its straightforward enough that simply downloading, installing and hitting the "create new project" and spamming through the menu and then opening script.rpy to see the code which will tell you like 70% of what you need to make your first vn. there no need to be afraid just because the word 'code' was mentioned. ren'py's own language is just copy pasting stuff back and forth and inserting your own names and pictures. its nothing like C# or java or whatever languages exist cause i know jackshit about any of that and dont know how to do programming

anyway, inside the main script file, script.rpy, are commented instructions on how to name a character, place a sprite, place a background, and put in text and you can basically make a vn with these things. i can not stress it enough KEEP IT SIMPLE, especially if you're starting out. making things complicated or planning massive projects is just shooting yourself in the foot. better to make 2 minute game than get stuck trying to make a epic masterpiece

writing a story is its own thing. however anyone can write and its better to write a shit story than no story. that way you have something to build on and get more comfy with your own art process. its what me and everyone else who makes vns and any other art or skill or hobby have done too.

if you like what some other vn/manga/anime/story does copy it and smash these inspirations together to make your own thing. save pictures and lines you see that get you inspired if you need inspiration and references for your own story. everything in this world is inspired by other things someone else has made. its not stealing unless you get absurd and download someone elses game and take out half the assets and put them in your own game and pretend you didnt

if you have interest do yourself a favour and make a vn. as far as game development goes its one of the most accessible options out there . ren'py is an amazing engine having all the vn necessities already in place since that allows you to just focus on the story and not have to worry about setting things up yourself and scrambling with advanced code unless you really want to

i know the jam is just ending in the following weeks and depending on when you see this post this might be outdated as hell but my yurijam server is still going and will be going until people simmer out and something new shiny takes their attention. still, its a server an people post gay shit there occasionally even outside of jams so me and many others are helpful and like answering questions to help otehrs make stuff. so i think the best way is to join the server rn and just ask questions in the help channel. better to ask stupid questions than no questions

As the matter of fact I do! I just keep it to myself most of the time out of shyness. Honestly idk where to begin, I have them scattered on my notes so here’s just a few of them

Before I go to his childhood, I want to establish that his parents were from a new money background and his father is new to biglaw. He wanted to blend in with the old money crowd so he started to mimic how they dress, act, etc. (And yes I do think he would pour this onto his son)

His mother on the other hand is a hairdresser. Unlike george, she doesnt want to dress like his “rich friends”. I havent thought much about her relationship with Howard yet but she mostly acts like the second voice of reason after Chuck (though Mr. Mcgill does that better than her)

I do think that George’s attempt to larp as those upper men is an attempt to get approval from them (that theme runs in the family I guess…)

So for me it really just connects the dots on how Howie’s financial background reflects the things he spent on (ex: gucci loafers, jaguar car, his tuscan style mansion)

When it comes fo his childhood, his parents werent really that stern to him (apart from what would he be in the future). They're the type of parents who would let their kid do anything they want, as long as they would end up being what the parents want. It would bite them both back though (especially george). George would definitely call young Howard selfish or ungrateful, when its his doing in the first place

This is based from one of patrick’s interview, but he was probably very an awkward kid back then. Probably due to him being an only child (or undiagnosed autism), but he struggles a lot on making connections so he would mirror other people’s action or read those “how-to-make-friends 101” books. He knows the right thing to say but he didnt say all that with his heart

A lot of his problems with his father just stems from disconnection. George wanted the very best for his son, but what he thinks that its best is just his tunnel vision of a dream. Whereas Howard just wants to be close to him but each time he does that, George would always do something that absolutely pisses him off so its back to square one

As for his mullet-thing??? Its an attempt to distance himself from his father. He’s scared that people would say he’s similar to George, so he styled it like his mom

after dream of life jane left and karnak yapped/pos and then he went into his box when uranium suite started

misha held up his little flask of alcohol when it said "drink some brew join the choir"

they all got spun off and yk it was SO COOOLLL then it started also karnak genuinely seemed like an animatronic it was so epic

ricky seemed excited about the iron maiden shirt then looked disgusted abt the funk of the carny

everyone was so mad at ocean

the girls were the other hookers and noel was like telling them the story of why he killed misha and he stepped on him it was so silly

and ricky held noel when he said "my child is there any final words to ze lord ud like to say!?"

noel ended it standing on the chair

misha. walked up. AFTER THE SONG. and kissed noel. no explanation he just did

when he said it was natural for two men to kiss noel looked disappointed

mishas voice was always louder than everyone elses he was incredible

esgal was so funny and the improv was too

constande didnt finish her thing, she turned around and saw ocean looking FURIOUS and she just cut off

ricky was wearing a little birthday hat and was reading a comic at the beginning of the song and he was so confused and concerned abt the aliens

misha and noel were aliens and the girls were cats

jane pulled the lever and no photos came up so she tried again :(

the choir started whispering to each other "do you know her?" "who is that?" and stuff when jane walked to her blcok to stand when the ballerina came out

a ballerina wearing super flowy white fabric came out and danced up until "and from the ground beneath my feet"

jane was like. idk i cant describe it but she was like jerking around and dancing

and the rest of the choir was like dead and moving their bodies like they were broken while sitting

she got a tiny birthday hat :(

HUGE FAKE CUPCAKE OMG

ocena walked over to the band and liked directed them on what to play and seemed very hesitant abt what she was fonna sing

ricky taught her how to eat the cupcake then he took a bite and gave her a thumbs up and she copied him and he gave her a fist bump and she gave her doll a fist bump

jane like waved around her doll and gave the doll to ricky and he made the doll walk and she shook her head and did the motion if like waving around the doll and he copied her and he did it for a while until she took the doll back (she had been like waving around her doll to play with it a lot)

noel drank so much alcohol it spilled down his face and misha did the same (and kept doing so) 

constance left ocean after talking and sat down then ocean was like "my death has really affected me!" she got up and walked over and yk said "yeah me too"

ocean crying in a chair after constance punched her

CONSTANCES MONOLOGUE WAS SO SAD. also misha actually had the tattoo (temporary tattoo but still) that the carny had

noel walked up to constance and put a hand on her shoulder and jane brought her microphone (WHICH WAS BLUE COTTON CANDY??)

sugar cloud was amazing.

ocean whispered "im sorry" and hugged constance

the other side was yellow

the other side stayed open when ocean yapped

when she said "motion carried, democracy rocks" she raised her hand to vote for jane and everyone else raised their hands too so the vote was still unanimous

jane. kept wlaking. i dont know how but she kept walking back for a long time eventually theyjusy lowered the big circle again

there was a countdown before karnak died, and a bunch of different fortunes overlayed each other (like the audio of him saying a bunch of fortunes) before he said THE fortune

the choir all hugged eachother and the theatre went completely dark and the auidenxe clapped like it was over

the lights slowly came back on it was so cool

they finished the song

AND THEN they like got pulled back like they did in the beginning and they got on the same blocks in the same position as the beginning and then the back lit up like a sun for the last dream of life

then they js broke character and did bows :3

oh also jane like. stared down the audience multiple times

OVERALL 10000/10 EXPERIENCE WOULD DO AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN
