forget the dinner party. i want your to imagine you're standing in the grocery store on a perfectly ordinary sunday afternoon, shopping for food, and you think, "oh, i know what i should do this week, i should make pesto." and so you wander around grabbing ingredients, right, and you've got your garlic, and you've got your olive oil, and you've got your basil, and you're reaching for a product you've bought a hundred times before when you realize that it's fucking pine nuts, they're fucking pine nuts, and you find yourself drawn up short.

"but i'm not going to be one of those people," you whisper to yourself while standing stock-still and staring down a package of inanimate objects in a supermarket as concerned-looking suburban women hurry their children past your abandoned cart. but it's too late; you are already one of those people, one of those people you have always sworn you would never be, one of those people you have never been before, who cannot find the line. who instead finds themselves thinking, without any irony at all, "on the one hand: pesto. on the other hand: him."

and it's his fault, is the problem, with his face and his eyes and his horrible beard and his vineyard attendance and the fact that he has corrupted a perfectly good nut by existing and causing it to become the name for his fans. it's his fault that you can never eat pesto again because you know that if you buy the fucking pine nuts they will haunt you, will cry out things like "Berkeley" and "I'm really into the super contrasty black and white" and "asparagus," until even your dinner tastes of the same bitter confused incredulous loathing that currently flavors the rest of your life
