Someone people got upset with me on Twitter a while back because I said Revachol reminded me of my own city, even though I live in the Americas.
I took a drive near the Detroit river today. It was frozen over with a bunch of birds sitting on the ice. On the other side I could see the tall buildings of Detroit, and on our side I saw abandoned buildings, distilleries, big piles of asphalt, and so many cranes.
If I stood on the frozen beach and looked a little to the right I would begin to see… absolutely nothing. The snow is white, the sky is white, and the river is white. It looked like my world was still loading in. That’s the pale. When I played Disco Elysium for the first time it was February 2023, and the game looked exactly like it did outside.
Windsor, Ontario is the automotive capital of Canada, most people I know work at some sort of assembly plant, my husband has worked at several tool and die shops. Unfortunately because of this, a lot of the city is not walkable, public transportation is severely lacking, and… it is also known as one of the unemployment capitals of Canada. During the time that I was playing the game, I had just left my position in the IWW, which seemed to be the final straw in the entire union crumbling into dust.
I only moved to this city six years ago. I came from a much smaller town in southern Ontario, one that wasn’t very diverse in terms of anything. A lot of people who live in Windsor aren’t from here. A lot of them aren’t from Canada, either. They’re just kind of stuck here, living paycheque to paycheque and hoping one day they can afford to move to Toronto where there may be better opportunities (cue Fallen Leaves by Billy Talent). A lot of people blame the immigrants and international students for the high unemployment rate and the housing crisis. Of course, you have to understand that the reason they are getting jobs is because employers are legally allowed to pay them less than minimum wage, and a lot of the buildings that aren’t totally abandoned have been renovated to accommodate too many international students in a basement that isn’t up to fire code. My husband knew a kid in his engineering class that died in a fire because of this reason. Our landlord is actively trying to coerce us to move out of our small apartment so he can add more bedrooms and charge more. I cannot get the mold fixed unless I agree to him getting rid of our kitchen.
But as I said, I am from a small town, and I love Windsor. I love the people in it, I love how I get to meet people from so many different aspects of life. I would have never met my husband or my best friend had I not come here. I never had anything to do in my hometown, I was the only nerd, the only queer. I feel like my D&D friends are my family, I feel loved. I want to make this place better. I look over at the beautiful buildings of Detroit and think of all the Americans terrified of the new presidency and what it will bring and I want to hug them, I want to make things better.
Playing Disco Elysium and being in Revachol for me was refreshing. Instead of a lively bustling city, or a quiet little countryside, I got to see an industrial town that was struggling, but beautiful in its own way. One that had a rich history and people who weren’t giving up on it. The things I saw on my screen; the big cranes and the sea ice and the pale… they were outside my window.
I’m not going to understand the experiences and relationships European people have to this game. I hope someday I won’t be too impoverished to explore the world, but I’m not sure I ever will. Still, a lot of this game meant something to me, and this is one of the aspects. I won’t be apologetic about it, (sorry? 🇨🇦) and I hope maybe you will open your mind to the possibility that someone across the world does have something in common with you.

Tw if you've been through poverty/homelessness for a while (esp. While young)
It's kinda disheartening, you know, this will be I think the third year now where I cannot afford to buy my friends gifts from myself this year. Though I would really prefer to. I really hate joint gifts. I don't feel like I have nice enough clothes to wear for holidays. Everything has become daily wear. I deeply appreciate anything new I am able to get due to my clothes being between 2-vintage years old. I need a winter coat. A hat, gloves. A scarf. Things that fit so I'm not freezing or layering so much I can't take anything off.
I can't describe how badly I have wanted fast food. It's been a few weeks now since I got groceries and I have basically just been filling my body with sugar. I want to take the bus, or have it delivered, or walk. But I'm maybe a 10 minute drive from a 7-11 but I'm not in the city so there's no sidewalks or anything to block snow, along with busses not coming out here. I can't have it delivered because of food stamp rules.
The mistreatment from my roommate is getting too much. My food is being eaten (I am on food stamps, they are not), Everything is consistently dirty (I wish I could say I had part in it), I am expected to take care of animals and do a lot of these household chores, doesn't matter what I'm dealing with during that day. [Edit: the mess has to do with her bathroom sanitation issues, food waste, food trash, normal trash, etc. These are all things I should not have to clean up as they are around 10 years older than me. It was never specified to me when I moved in that I would be getting asked to watch her dogs for free. I also offered at the beginning to clean her house for her regularly, but was told that wasn't necessary. I am deeply grateful that I have been able to live here this long, but this treatment on any human being isn't okay in my opinion.]
I have now applied to every job I am qualified and able to work at in walking distance throughout November. The only place that had promise will not deny my application though they intended to hire me if i changed my hours on the application. Everywhere else has denied me or ghosted me.
I really really try my best to push through every day and see the good parts of it, and to always work toward the betterment of my quality of life. I'm now in a state where I feel like it's out of my control. Even if I did get a minimum wage job right now, it would be spring or summer before I have the money to leave. And she's hoping I'm gone around January.
Now my roommate has attempted at support or helping me, and when I respond with initiative to work on this together I am left on my own. I have made many efforts to communicate. Even yesterday I sat down and was clear and frank about my job searching, and if there is anything I can do or she would like me to do, since it looks like I won't have the money by the end of the month to even put anything on a lease.
I'm not asking for money, I'm not asking you to care or support. I just really don't have a place where I can talk about this and I have more objective eyes reading.
Yes, there is a roof over my head and blankets. But think of how much use you can get from that when you are never wanted from there. I got here in July and it has felt nothing short of humiliating and patronizing I have to depend on others for most things and it makes me feel sick every time because I know how capable I am. [Edit: yes, if I would have gotten a job when it was warmer this would be easier. I am not saying I'm not at fault at all. But due to location, transportation, being uneducated and unmedicated, I feel I understandably made mistakes. But I don't believe that is any reason for anyone to be treated like this.]

happy holidays to me, or what I mean to say is yay another day where people get to tell me to fuck off and suffer no consequences for it
if you go to st*rb*x on fucking christmas you’re a trash human being and that’s just a fact
ended up putting the rest of this under a cut because it turned v negative v fast... and also somehow turned into “a list of things I wish I could tell people today”
don’t tell me omg i’m so glad you’re open i hope you get to see your family like you are the reason I am here sharon stop trying to act like you empathize with me when you and your maskless face are the reason i’m fucking here
and no i can’t afford to not work christmas -- which is optional, but not so much when you have loans and payments and shit. especially since my hours get cut in half when the new year comes around because fuck me i guess
stop peeking through my god damn windows like i’m a goldfish there are five giant neon signs that say my lobby is closed, go through my drive thru
yes, I know the line is fucking long, take it up with marge up here who ordered ten different drinks and then asked for three to be different/changed/added at the god damn window
no, I will not discount you because the wait is long
yes, I know the parking lot layout is terrible and hard to navigate. but seeing as I am NOT the city planner but in fact a fucking barista, there’s not much I can do about it
yes, my mobile ordering IS off. why? because yesterday it was on and you still had to pick it up in the drive thru, but you didn’t wanna do that deborah. you wanted to call and tell me to fuck off because of the line. when i told you that THIS ONCE you can come up to the door and we’ll hand it out to you because you won’t stop cussing us out, that wasn’t an invitation for you to let other people know so they would line up with you
no, you cannot form a line at my LOCKED DOOR to demand your mobile orders. if that were the case my store would have the option for you to pick that up inside... like it has for the last 2 weeks. but because y’all won’t social distance or wear masks like our stores require, you gotta stay in your own (literal) lane
when we’re pointing at the glass we’re not directing you to go into the drive thru lane ON FOOT, SIR. we’re trying to get your dumb ass to notice the giant sign that says you can’t come inside even though you think the door you’ve tried and failed to open five times isn’t something that applies to you -- so please stop making me have to shout OVER THIS CAR THAT ACTUALLY ORDERED at you to please GET OUT OF THE DRIVE THRU LINE ON FOOT BECAUSE YOU’LL PROBABLY BE TOO STUPID TO NOT GET HIT
what was that? “it’s christmas/eve and I’m being very rude and I should be a little more polite during a joyful time of year?” well yeah, totally. but maybe think about that before you pound your fist on my door and shriek like a banshee for having a line out to the fucking main road
no, I will not let you pay for the car ahead of you. it messes up my entire line system and half the people I have on my window are new and end up fucking over other people by giving them the wrong stuff or making them pay incorrect totals. why are we so incompetent? because we had to mass hire because you couldn’t stay away from a fucking sbux during a pandemic -- maybe think about tipping your baristas instead
why is my lobby not open? why the fuck do you think. and please pull your mask over your nose while you’re at it
no, you cannot order inside, no matter how long you stand in front of my door
haha YES, we ARE busy! but I literally haven’t stopped taking orders since I got here four hours ago so it’s not because I’m standing here with my thumbs up my ass. it’s because you and literally everyone in town wanted sbux on christmas
yes, the other 2 stores ARE closed. 1. they had to overstaff unsafely because of the sheer volume of customers this last week and 2. you and some of your other moron friends didn’t stay at home and either asymptomatically and unknowingly OR IN SOME CASES KNOWINGLY BUT FUCK ME I GUESS gave them COVID. so they had to close -- so yes of course it’s my fault they’re closed I, the minimum wage green apron taking your order and abuse, have control over that obviously
yes, we are closed! it’s christmas fucking day!
“you ordered your hot latte an hour ago and you want it FRESH” you say? well maybe you shouldn’t have waited an hour to pick it up. and no it’s not my drive thru line because I’ve been standing in the same spot all day and know exactly how fast my line is moving -- I’m literally being told to go faster
and for the last fucking time, no i will NOT give you a discount for the long wait. try going through every car ahead of you and asking for them to pay you back instead because they’re the real problem not me
:)

The Broken System
Rant to Follow. Keep scrolling if you don’t want to read my angry opinions on the fundamental wrongness of politics and economics in my country/province.
There is nothing to truly showcase the flaws of a system like an emergency situation. A year ago the majority of my province made a very grave mistake and chose to vote into power a party and a premier who do not care about the people at all. Their behaviour has been completely unsurprising to the minority of us who did not vote for them. Every campaign promise that they made, they proceeded to break. They took money from health and education and funnelled it into a non-essential “war room” that was supposed to save our economy by attempting to save our failing oil industry. When economists have been predicting for years that the oil industry is failing. There will not be another boom. Oil prices will not go up. Diversification is required.
But I live in the Texas of Canada. I live in a province that refuses to see the forest for the trees. The NDP party began to diversify the economy. They held education and health care as priorities and they invested in alternate businesses, both in the energy sector and elsewhere. They offered tax breaks to tech startups, drawing them to the province. They looked into alternate energy businesses. they raised the minimum wage and changed labour laws to protect workers. They did a lot of things that benefited the middle class and low-income people. And the economy began to recover.
Because people with money spend money.
When the UCP took over they immediately scrapped much of what the NDP worked hard to build. They announced cuts to front line health. They announced cuts to education. They handed out 4.7 billion dollars to non-Canadian corporations in an attempt to “create jobs”. Because trickle-down economics you know. Those corporations did not create jobs. They took their handout, laid off workers, and pulled out of Alberta. The rich do not move the economy.
So. 2020. Enter Covid-19. Pandemic. State of Emergency.
Absolutely unprecedented circumstances. What does the UCP government do? The UCP tears up a contract with Alberta doctors. The UCP plans to lay off frontline health care professionals. The UCP delists a range of services, forcing patients to pay out of pocket. The UCP fires educational staff because “they aren’t needed right now” - when they promised that no one would be let go for the remainder of the normal school year (aka jobs guaranteed until June).
The UCP creates a temporary benefit (just until the Federal programs roll out) then restricts it to only those who are quarantining due to Covid. It is not accessible to parents who had to stay home because schools and daycares are closed and thus lost their job. It does not cover those who are still employed but have lost shifts due to no business. It does not cover those who have to stay home to take care of a sick family member. It does not cover anyone who is eligible for Employment Insurance federally.
So basically, it covers barely anyone.
So. How is this relevant to me?
The restaurant industry has been one of the hardest hit across Canada. There have already been small, independently owned restaurants who have closed their doors permanently. The government of Alberta shut restaurants down on Friday. The only thing we are allowed to do is offer take out. Which is something but it’s simply not enough.
Fun fact. Restaurant staff are some of the lowest paid workers. Apparently cooking and serving you food isn’t considered a skilled job worth a decent wage. To double down on that, corporate restaurant chains that make millions refuse to change that ideal. They consistently take advantage of employees by low balling them. Servers make minimum wage. Cooks - if they are lucky - make maybe a dollar above minimum wage. Did you know, in Canada, that culinary is considered a Red Seal Trade? Did you know that chefs are the lowest paid trade in Canada? Did you know that chefs don’t have a union to represent them, unlike every other trade?
So. On a personal level, though I hate to admit it, I make minimum wage. I started with Mikado when I started school. I needed a part-time job at the time and while I wasn’t happy with the wage, I was being offered the opportunity to learn authentic Japanese cuisine from Japanese chefs. I accepted a lower wage in trade for an amazing opportunity and because I was in school, wage wasn’t really my first concern.
I still have a job. However, my hours have been more than halved. I was doing around 32 hours a week, not quite full time but close enough. Now I’m doing 12-15. Not because I am incapable of work. Not because I don’t want to work. Because of an international crisis. If I ask my manager to lay me off, Employment Insurance will only cover 55% of my average wages. So around 15 hours. So about the same as I’m making while still working. But there is a very high chance that when this pandemic passes, I will not have a job waiting for me.
My company cannot look out for me. No customers = no profit. Restaurants do not have a high margin. Minimum wage is, in its very nature, the minimum a person needs to live, based on a 40-hour workweek. At half of that, people cannot survive. Employment insurance is meant to be a temporary support when people are between jobs. I am not between jobs. Those chefs and servers who have been laid off are not between jobs. There are no jobs.
This is capitalism. This is austerity governments. This is allowing those of us who are considered “non-essential” to suffer. This is how the working class, those upon whom the economy is built, are treated under “trickle-down economics”. This is where we desperately need our government to step in and help.
But our government is refusing to lift a finger. Instead, they are lining their own pockets and trying to pass off their obligation to the Federal government. Whose plans are slightly better but still don’t address the sweeping problems.
By comparison, in countries that operate on a more socialist level, their working-class are not suffering in the same way. There are a variety of solutions that could truly support all people. But those solutions are socialist. Therefore bad. We don’t want to be leftists. Because caring for all of our people means billionaires can’t be billionaires. The rich might end up a tiny bit less rich. But don’t worry, they’ll still be able to afford five cars, two houses, and a timeshare in Mexico. -_-
When the pandemic has passed, we will be living in a depression. One that I fear, in my province, thanks to the short-sighted and greedy behaviour of my government will probably rival the great depression. The system doesn’t work.
And what truly astonishes me the most is that there are still people who don’t see this. People who are in similar situations to me. Working-class people, who are out of work but still think that somehow austerity and corporations are going to save us? HOW? THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT YOU.
How can you believe that it is perfectly acceptable to make millions of people suffer when we have the ability to stop it?

Catherynne Valente schools her racist neighbors about the asylum seekers in their midst
Tumblr media
[Author Catherynne Valente (previously) posted this outstanding rant to her Facebook page; I asked her permission to repost it here so it would have somewhere to live outside of the zuckerverse and she graciously gave her permission -Cory]
I live in Portland, Maine. We have recently had an influx of African asylum seekers and the city has been scrambling to find shelter and support for them.
Cue NextDoor, that wretched hive of scum and villainy. Every day someone would post some new hateful jingoistic nonsense about how horrible these people are and that they need to get out of 'Merica and leave it to the 'Mericans.
I try not to get involved on NextDoor because I live in a small community and I have to see these people at the ferry dock. But I got mad. And I got involved. And it got long.
So I decided to share it with you. Please feel free to share it with others who might need to hear it.
You know, I was going to let this thread go by without saying anything. It's not worth it, I said to myself. These people aren't going to listen. But y'all can't stop being hateful and I'm tired of getting notifications that someone else is being and absolute bell-end about their fellow man on NextDoor.
So buckle up.
First of all, "they" aren't illegal. They are asylum seekers. It is legal in every nation on the planet to seek asylum, and they are abiding by the law. Just like our friend with his grandfather's naturalization certificate at the top of the thread (which is from 1928, by the bloody way, predating the Hart-Cellar Act of 1965 which completely overhauled the process to enter this country, specifically to make it harder for minorities because human beings will keep a rock as a pet but cannot think of other human beings as brothers unless they look *exactly* like them. And even then). THEY NEED HELP BECAUSE THEY ARE FOLLOWING THE LAW. The law forbids them to work for 6 months after entry. If they were illegal, they would just start working one of the many menial jobs that have no problem hiring underpaid immigrant labor.
Second, these people are not hurting you. In any way. I would be shocked if anyone yelling about those terrible no good very bad fellow human beings had ever met even one of them. Many of them are educated and skilled. Many of them are Francophones, making Maine a wonderful place for them to reestablish themselves, as there are still pockets of French speakers in this state. Every single study shows that immigrants and asylum seekers are a net benefit to the economy, that they get off of social services much faster than homegrown welfare recipients, that they become entrepreneurs and hard workers. And yet you hate them before they even arrive.
And if you want to talk to me about how some of them are Muslim, and might bring their naughty repressive Muslim African culture into wonderful, flawless liberal America, let me tell you about Alabama. And Georgia. And Ohio. And North Carolina. And the Supreme Court. The people who are right now actively seeking to curtail my rights to my own body, to prevent me from voting for my own equal representation, to empower the companies that may employ me over myself, are as American as the flag, fireworks, and goddamned apple pie. These are individual people with no institutional power, and you have no idea what they think or believe about anything because you don't know them. The people with institutional power are hurting us all. Right now. And I don't see any angry threads on Next Door about it.
OMG BUT MY TAXES.
I. Pay. Taxes. Too. And my taxes go to support an aging Maine population, to give them healthcare, food stamps, housing subsidies, social security, and myriad other avenues of support. Support that will almost certainly not be available to me when I am old, because the very generation receiving my tax dollars has repeatedly voted for the downsizing and existential dissolution of the programs they enjoy. Yet I still pay. I pay for you. Knowing I will get nothing in return.
But you know what really pisses me off about where my tax dollars go? It isn't that they support an aging conservative population with the free time to post endless hateful multi-exclamation point capslocked screeds on the Internet. And it goddamn well isn't that 86-150 families (god, how few human beings it takes to turn on the histrionics) who have been through the most heinous and unimaginable cruelty, violence, and persecution might settle here in this state where all the young people actually born here are fleeing at rates that would snap your neck.
My tax dollars and your tax dollars and all of our tax dollars are going to build a megayacht dock in Portland so that more uber-rich assholes have a place to park their massive pleasure boats, boats that cost more than those 86-150 families could ever need.
My tax dollars and your tax dollars and all of our tax dollars are going to subsidize developers who smell fresh meat in our city so they can build more luxury condos none of us can afford (and again, the sale price of three or four of them on the West End would cover everything these families need), condos that will sit empty for all but two weeks a year so that a few families can look at the water and stuff themselves with lobster butter while complaining about live music to the point that our festivals get cancelled so they can go to bed earlier, murmuring as they drift off to a dreamland none of us can make a down payment on that Portland used to be so much better in the old days.
My tax dollars and your tax dollars and all of our tax dollars have, for eight years, gone toward blocking bills the people voted for from becoming law, fighting in the courts not to give Mainers medicare or raise our minimum wage or let us smoke in peace or have a little more choice in voting. Our money has gone to subsidizing red states that hate New England like fire. Our money has gone to making sure the megayacht-parking lobster butter bathers pay less in taxes than a barista on Munjoy Hill. And NONE of you are complaining about that.
Nor do I see any single thread looking to help the homeless vets and addicts you're all suddenly so conveniently concerned about, no matter how bad the winter gets. Pro tip: do not use veterans as strawmen when you argue that the poor deserve nothing and America is somehow full. A massive percentage of vets are immigrants themselves, and they are out there protecting your right to be a total dick on the internet.
Somehow, for some strange reason, the only time people seem to take to their keyboards to complain about where their taxes are going is when they might just end up helping someone less fortunate. When they help people more fortunate? Crickets.
This state is aging. We need a new tax base or all those senior citizens will suffer, because their services will be cut without people my age to pay for them. Young people are not moving here. They're just vacationing here. If you feel like freezing to death some idle winter without social services still yelling Don't Tread On Me, be my guest. I would prefer to live in a lively multicultural city full of art, music, food, theater, and more services being used by people who need them to survive than those who just want to pay a little less taxes and have a convenient place to park their yachts.
The hate in this thread is repulsive. You should all be ashamed of yourselves. I would imagine some of you consider yourselves Christian, even while you spit on those Christ commanded you to shelter and treat even as you would him. Nice work. There is not one of you who has not taken help from another human being at some point in your lives, even if it's only in the form of using the roads and electricity and infrastructure we all pay for collectively to make yourselves a success. Filling these people's bellies costs us so much less than filling the insatiable gullets of the vulture capitalists that have made quite the little feast of our city in the last decade. It's utterly pathetic that we must pay for the rich to harm us, but that rouses no protest, but this, THIS, these poor, desperate, hopeful people who have walked across a continent to get here, raises your rage to the breaking point.
You want to save a dollar by starving a poor man while handing over twenty to a rich one with a smile and a song.
That you would deny someone who has escaped hell on earth a blanket, a tv dinner, and a scrap of gym floor to sleep on doesn't make you a patriot. It makes you a bad person.
I said good day, sir.

Would insurance cover it?
My husband was involved in a car accident 2 years ago...the people filed a claim/law suit recently over some 'injuries' (which is BS because he works with this guy and he was no injured), just 2 days before statue of limitation expires. Since my husband's work requires so much traveling, it was pointless for him to keep car/insurance if he never drives, we sold his car so he no longer has car insurance. Best Averaged sized car for a teenager?
So I'm going for my license soon and we're starting to look at cars to get me around. I want something that's pretty easy on gas, reliable, easy on car insurance cost, doesn't cost an arm and a leg but ALSO isn't a tiny car like the Chevy Aveo because most of the people in my family are pretty tall for instance my mom is 5'9 I'm 5'7 /5'8 and my other sisters are also about the same height. I've been thinking about the Prius because I hear it's got some leg room and is easy on gas, but people say that batteries are more harmful than regular ones and all this jazz. Then I thought about the Honda Insight but I heard that the headroom in the back is not comfortable. I was thinking the Hyundai Sonata, but the only model I really like is the 2011 and I don't think the insurance company takes kindly to teenagers driving new cars. I would prefer not too big or long a car like the Toyota Avalon, but it's manageable. Any suggestions?""

regarding the 80% increase in insurance premiums, and the 11% increase in the number of Americans who did not have health insurance coverage during the Bush presidency, was that because a magical elf traveled back in time to the year 2000 to tell insurance company executives that Obamacare was coming? Or could it be that insurance premiums have been increasing at an average rate of 8 to 11% per year for about the last 15 years and the increases we've seen in the last few years aren't indicative of costs associated with Obama-care (Which hasn't even been fully implemented yet) and Conservatives are just trying to make political hay out of cost increases that are consistent with established trends?""
How does the insurance company find out about moving violations?
My understanding is that when you get a moving violation (e.g, a speeding ticket), the police or the courts or whoever will notify your insurance company. When your insurance company finds out and finds out about the points that are now on your license, they raise your insurance premium. However, a friend tells me that he's received several speeding tickets, that his insurance company has never found out (meaning no one is notifying his insurance company), and that his premium has therefore never gone up. How is that possible?""

Car insurance for husband and wife.?
Recently I went to insure my daughter and her car in the company me and my wife have been insured for some time. I wanted to include myself in her insurance but it went up in premiums a lot and we decided to insure her without me as an additional driver. Before that (last year to be exact) I insured my wife and I was included as a second driver. Basically, I was advised to do so on the basis that it would be cheaper. I heard about this option before and therefore did not check it properly with this company. This time (with my daughter) this option went an opposite way with higher premiums, so I asked them whether I can exclude myself from my wife's insurance as well because my insurance allows me to drive any car, but was told: ...because you are husband and wife, by law you cannot drive her car without being included in her insurance policy whatsoever... I am suspicious about this statement now and feel that I am being cheated. Does anybody know whether this rule exist or is it just the usual salesmen lie? Thank you.""

Can my car insurance company do this?
I called my insurance company yesterday to get a quote for a change of vehicle as I was planning to buy a new car. They said my monthly premium would still stay the same and the quote was only valid till end of the day which is fair enough. They said they give the quote on whatever the insurance rate is at the current time so if i was to call another day it could go up but it shouldn't go up that much. So I went to view the car yesterday evening and decided to buy the car. I called my insurance company today and they said it would cost me an extra 350 to get me insured on the car. So i asked them how could it go from nothing to 350 within a day. They come out with the quote is based on the daily rate of insurance and they cant do nothing about it. I wouldn't have mind if it went up by 100 or so but from nothing to 350 in one day is a big jump. Is there anything I can do?

I live in the UK and want a quick insurance quote without having to put in all my details such as where I live. Any websites that can let me do this? Thanks!""
""I need short term auto insurance, since i will be on vacation for 45 days in southern california,?
Now my insurance company doesn't cover me in the states
Is there any way of avoiding finance charges on monthly motor insurance ?
Like everyone, I'm strapped for cash and the other half's credit cards are maxxed out. In fact I'm so considered so bad for credit now even a loan shark wouldn't touch me with a bargepole despite having a job and being a discharged bankrupt - however my car insurance is due. Is there any way around the extra charges ? My renewal quote was 258 if payed in one lump, yet searching for monthly payments my cheapest payback is 366 over 12 months. Not that I'd ever accuse the banks of ripping us off. Any idea's ??""
Why do auto insurance company ask for social security number when asking for a quote?
must i give my social security number if i were to purchase a auto policy?
Who is the Blonde looking for better insurance rates in the progressive insurance commercial.?
She works alongside Stephanie Courtney in the progressive insurance company commercials.
Will my Car Rental include insurance?
I'm hiring a car in Texas from Avis, it says it Includes Unlimited mileage, CUSTOMER FAC FEE, TRANSPORTATION FEE, VEH LICENSE FEE, Additional Liability Insurance (ALI), Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) - does this mean I won't have to arrange my own car insurance (I live in the UK) to cover driving the hire car abroad?""
Why is my car insurance so much cheaper than other companies?
i was looking around for auto insurance to see if there was anything cheaper than what im paying now. im a 20 year old male with a 2005 scion tc. i have been driving for about 2 years and currently use state farm. when i first insured my car 2 years ago, i was paying $148/mo. due to a speeding ticket, it has risen to $194/mo. i also have comprehensive and collision with a $500 deductible. $100,000/$300,000 coverage with full glass also. not complaining, i think this is great i looked at nationwide, allstate, geico, and progressive. these companies are supposed to be so great, but progressive quoted me at $485/mo for the same coverage! the other companies where all in that general area. progressives state minimum coverage plan for me was almost $300/mo. why do these other companies cost so much more? im not complaining about mine, obviously im not gonna switch, but i am curious as to the difference in price.""
Can I get the tax for my partners car as insurance will be in my name but the car will be in her name?
Neither of us have a car at the minute but my partners mum wants to buy her a car. The car will obviously be put in her name as it is being bought for her but she can not drive at the minute so I will be taking out the insurance in my name as I will be the main driver but we will need to tax the car can I get the tax for the car even if the car is not in my name but the insurance is in my name?
Polk County Auto Insurance?
Hi, is it true that come this October no auto insurance will be required or is it just another rumor?""

I have no inspiration in what I doing.  I think my course (digital design) is a joke.  I can blame this on myself and my own refusal to properly do ‘home work’ (not in context of getting assignments finished, moreso learning to code when I have never been able to).  I’ve gone from getting a scholarship last year, to realizing that scholarship didn’t change anything and the academic accolade didn’t do anything, so this year I’m not trying.  I’ve been getting Bs instead and I personally don’t care, but I think I have my lecturers worried about my sudden apathy.  And I guess the concern is warranted.  I know I need to graduate because I’m this close to doing it, but it seems pointless.  Also, I can’t code.  I cannot code at all.  And I need to code to finish this degree.  The work I’m currently doing is pointless, graduating from this degree is pointless, and the sense of despair I get from doing this makes it dubious as to whether I’ll even see the end of the year graduation or not.  I’ve sent over 20 emails asking for work, internships, anything, and I just don’t have anything that someone is actually looking for.  I can draw, and that’s it.  People want people that can use mocap from my degree and that wasn’t the minor path I chose to take.
WORK
Part of my degree is 60 hours professional work - which I have.  But the source is an ex lecturer who makes me feel uncomfortable.  He’s invited me to a strip club with he and his friends, and I don’t rate or value him as a manager.  But I have to work for him anyway, and smile and do whatever he would like me to do, because I need the 60 hours to finish my degree.  And if this is meant to be my first ‘bitter pill’ of what the industry is meant to be, why would I not just end it right now?  If this is all that I have in store for me, I don’t want it.  I got this job because I knew the right person at the right time, not because of anything that I did other than be agreeable.  My other job is at JB Hi-Fi.  It goes from being enjoyable to depressing depending on how much support I have from other staff.  I really don’t mind it when it’s enjoyable, but it’s dehumanizing half of the time.  My managers don’t care about me - some don’t even remember my name, and it feels sad to have to expect a lack of acknowledgement of me as a human.  Minimum wage also scares me.  What happens when no one wants me as a flatmate anymore?  I can’t sustain a ‘happy enough’ lifestyle on minimum wage being sometimes treated like shit.
RELATIONSHIPS
This is actually the lighter section of this whole thing.  This year one of my closest friends and biggest support groups, Hayley, moved in.  Her girlfriend Bobbi has also become a massive part of my life.  I spend so much time with these two intelligent, beautiful and in love babies.  But seeing them so in love with one another obviously does remind me of my loneliness sometimes.  Just moments where I see they’re having a moment, and I am in their way more than anything.  My sexuality is also confusing me.  Thankfully, probably because of the contraceptive I’m on, I don’t crave sex and I don’t feel incomplete while I’m not having it.  But I’m in a time in my life where I can review that the only men I’m attracted to are generally not good people for me (so far).  As for women, I am attracted to much more of a range of ladies, but I’ve only been intimate with one.  I don’t trust myself to be sexy or confident or alluring enough to find anyone.  I tried to use Her and Tinder, but I can’t do it.  I used Tinder a while ago and went out with a boy for a year and a half, but I just can’t face the whole process of ‘looking’ for someone again.  Especially since I’m not in a place where I want to go out of my way.  I’ve been lonelier than I am currently, and the rest of my life is heavier to me than the fact I’m single.
FAMILY
My Mom is moving overseas permanently.  My dad already did years ago.  I’m happy for her, and I am scared for her.  She’s never lived alone.  She has more mental health issues than I do and if she has a couple bad months I don’t know what will happen to her.  I love her to death and can’t imagine not being able to hug her or be with her.  Part of me wants to just follow her overseas, but I know that realistically that is not what I want to do.  I also have my dog and my cat to look after, so moving internationally is almost impossible until I have more savings.  There was also a temptation to move to Melbourne, where my dad and one year old baby sister live, but I don’t think I can afford moving myself and my dog.  I also don’t know anyone other than dad in australia, so I would be flatting with strangers.

Cries for help remain unanswered.
Twenty-five years of trying to get help while in Oregon. and more time trying while in California more than 25 years ago, all unanswered.
There remains a vacuum of assistance.
The presence of lack of rescue remains persistent.
There are no helpful people anywhere around here.
Please send help.
Please send US Military to Oregon.
Please send medical services to Oregon.
Bring your own hospital, without your own, the terror army will kill you at the hospitals if you are injured while trying to help. There are no medical services for US Citizens in Oregon, only Canadian terror army is treated for health conditions, everyone else is killed at the medical facilities. Illusion of medical treatment facilities is present throughout the state.

9:50 pm:
Donald Trump “Insult to Injury” terror:
The whole nation is in such financial distress that it was decided that every citizen should receive stimulus payments, twice.
That’s pretty bad financial conditions for that to have happened.
On the other hand, it appears that things are not so bad after all, in fact, it looks like everything is financially hunky dory, as the social security beneficiaries were only granted a 1.3% cost of living increase, it maxes out at 3% for a cost of living increase for elderly and disabled persons, and is calculated by some asshole this year, because clearly the cost of living has increased more than any other year of record, and that is well documented with the stimulus payments to tens of millions of citizens.
I am getting mixed messages from my government leaders here. One team says “Holy shit!, if we don’t hand out some coins, millions of people will starve because of Corona Virus.” while another team is saying: “Yeah, but we need to save some money somewhere, so, we’ll just fuck the old people and those gimpy fucks in the wheel chairs. canes, and crutches, they are all a bunch of leaches anyway, so, fuck ‘em... give ‘em a 13 just to let them know we mean business, and not to talk about the cut rate increase... they are all a bunch of Tiny Tim wanna bee’s... fuck Tiny Tim, and everyone who looks like him.”
Insult to injury, Christian style, from the top 1%.
It’s 1.7% light on the increase for cost of living.
Woodstock, 1998 Live Version of Edge of Seventeen by Fleetwood Mac.
youtube
The song is all fucked up in this version and the venue looks like three farmers took the barn apart to build the venue stage and fencing with a “Farm Pack” from the local lumber yard, for the “Jesus was a Carpenter” version of Edge of Seventeen in New York Catskill Mountains at Woodstock.
Google “Farm Pack” if you don’t understand what that is, or why the Farmer wants to be a Carpenter.
Mixed messages is a life-size thing, is giant blender where old and disabled people are tossed into along with some small children, for making a product that is sprayed onto the roadsides as a erosion abatement, keeps the mudslide from being noticed after the reigns come, for a prophet, and contracted by the state.
========
1-8-2021: 2:01 pm:
The Woodstock Version features Stevie wearing gold, she is famous for white and black, not gold.
It’s the “Sympathy for the Devil” version with a “Welcome to Jamaica, have a nice day” tattoo version, comes with a helicopter and alternate Harmonic Vocal Tuning, and, as noted, the screams of the crowd, were indeed heard.
=======
10:30 pm:
In the event that someone wants to do that math on “Jesus was a Carpenter” and why it’s associated to “Edge of Seventeen“ so heavily, need to have a look at 1985-ish United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Journeyman Wage Scale for Residential Carpenter Pay Rate.
There, you will find that the scale was about $17.50 per hour, while pay scale for Commercial Journeyman was about $22.10 per hour.
The $17.50 Residential Carpenters used to have a lot sayings, one is “I owe, I owe, so off to work I go” another was “Another day, another seventeen-fifty... and another oweee, damn, that hurt when I fell yesterday”
The Carpenters Union was hijacked back then, the story about is long and complex. It’s an important part of why the White House and Congress are all occupied by terrorists bent on ruling the world in league with Britain and the Vatican.
no one will speak to me to hear the story of Jesus worked as a Residential Union Carpenter who was making about $17.50 per hour when he was hit over he head and nailed to a cross on the jobsite.
Adam Schiff was there, part of the takeover of the carpenters union in the 1980′s. He worked for L & M Builders of Ventura County (Thousand Oaks and around there) and used the name “Cory” last name unknown, we used to have a Saturday night poker game together with some of the guys on the crew at the time.
I could be wrong... but I could be right... it was a long time ago, and “Cory” once told me he was an actor, just on the job to check things out, then one day, Cory said “I’m going to Montana”. He left, and that was the last I saw of him until I met him again here in Oregon at a dinner party at a friends house, Kurt Hill, the fork lift driver of Longboard Lumber in Merlin. There he was, “Carpenter Cory of Montana”, at the dinner party, some 25 years later on Jumpoff Joe Creek Road in Josephine county, where I was shot at by someone who ran into the forest after shooting, when Cory said “Can you go over there, and hand me that thing there...?” kind of way to put me in range. Paul Birch was owner of Longboard Lumber, turned out to be a hardcore Christian terror operative here in Merlin, and built hundreds of “Bomb Carts”... I never was able to learn more about the “Bombs” though, only that there was talk of tunnels, and a cabinet shop at Union Ave and Ringuette near the hospital. The carts were made of dimensional lumber and plywood, about four feet square, with a vertical back on one side, heavy duty castors, could haul about 1,000 lbs each, and there were hundreds made at Longboard Lumber by “Will”, an employee there at the Lumber yard, who also turned out to be a terror soldier who kept trying to kill me, for about 16 years so far, he used to stalk me to the Walgreen’s last year, often had a small boy with him. I think I killed Will at the Walgreen‘s in defense about one year ago. Paul Birch took his business dealings to Newport Oregon, to start a terror cell there when Longboard Lumber closed down about 10 years ago-ish.
Like I said, it’s a long story. is important, includes Fleetwood Mac, and Buckingham Palace.
============
1-8-2021: 3:17 pm: additional:
“Carpenter Cory Montana”: My memory is that his last name started with the letter n: neuman; newsome: neuter... something like that. “Cory Newsome” sounds hauntingly familiar.
There may be a connection to a US Postal Mail Carrier by the name of “Mo” who was the carrier for this route for many years when I first moved here to Oregon in 1996. Mo, used to always wear a beany, I have “Mo’s Beany”, but I do not know why, or how I obtained “Mo’s Beany”. The words “That’s Mo’s Beany” have been said my many a terror intruder into my home over a long period of time, as I keep “Mo’s Beany” clearly on display at a place in my home where terror intruders tend to hide when they enter. There are only very few places to hide inside my house these days, I have all of the rooms nailed shut to keep intruders from hiding in them. Had I not closed off all of the rooms in my house, I would have been killed a long time ago.
I advise US Citizens to reduce their living spaces to a bare minimum, as the intruders tend to hide, and wait quietly until the intended victims are asleep in their beds. That is the reason I have not slept in a bed in more than ten years... it’s far too dangerous to use a conventional bed. Sleep is a luxury I cannot afford, neither can you.
============
I think “Adam Cory Schiff” was stalking the L & M Builder’s owner’s son, Cory Reese, who was also part of the Saturday night poker game crew, back in the day when a card game was just a game of Dealers Choice, not global annihilation done by SAG Actors.
I considered Kurt Hill to be a friend until one day I saw him wrap a Pharmacist with cellophane shipping warehouse style plastic wrap, and drag the pharmacist out of the Service Drugs that used to be on 6th St. and toss him into a truck, and drive away from there. It was dusk, at the time. Kurt was a big giant of a man, very strong. I think I killed him in defense out by the mailboxes about ... a long time ago, in defense after some geese were seen running around with no heads on them, making horrible sounds out front on the road.
Seventeen-Fifty is the connection to “Edge of Seventeen“, Union Journeyman scale wages.
=================
11:28 pm:
Other Carpenter Union take over details:
There was a local union hall either on Ventura Blvd in Woodland Hills Ca, or near there, I belonged to that one for awhile, then moved my card to District Counsel 844. I learned that carpenters were being hired by the framing contractors, and they were being signed up as Journeyman, even when they had few skills, but I was not one of those, I did, however, join as a Journeyman having worked non-union for my whole life by the time I joined the union. There was a housing boom, carpenters were on short supply. (it turns out that the housing boom was a “manufactured housing arrangement”, so to speak, to create housing for the upcoming influx of Canadian terror soldiers. Tracts of houses, many thousands each tract, all in phased of one-hundred to four-hundred homes each phase, all around Southern California) Those Journeyman newcomers were paid union wage scale, worked forty hours per week, but were only actually paid for some other amount of hours, typically, about 20 hours were paid out at scale wage for a 40 hour week worked on the job. A carpenter and an employer came to agreement on the side, about hourly rate, about $10 was norm, so, the math was worked to pay $10 per hour, while reflecting full scale on the pay check, with reduced hours showing for the full week of work, making illusion that they only worked part time, about 20 hours or so.
Those carpenters were robbed of the necessary accumulation of hours to become vested for pension.
I demanded one dollar over scale, I was paid one dollar over scale, always, after I learned of that weird arrangement of hours. I was hurt before I became vested.
L & M Builders had a jobsite I worked on where a police officer was shot, and hand cuffed to his steering wheel, I heard him, used his radio to call for help, he died though right there in the car after I got his cuffs unlocked. That jobsite in Thousand Oaks, north side somewhere, at the edge of the city limits, was the weirdest place ever... they built the model homes, five or six different layouts, in a culdesac, to demonstrate what would be for sale later. We built those, then, some other crew of special people came and took the model houses apart piece by piece, then, we built the same floor plans again, on the same slabs. The houses were about 4,000 sq. ft. two story homes, all taken apart after completion of all trades... roofs were on, drywall was all done, plumbers had finished, electrician ran the wire, the HVAC was done... all done. Then, they took them apart, so we could build them again.
Same thing happened here in Grants Pass. The place that just is being completed now called Cascade Public Storage, was all built, completed, done... about ten of maybe twenty years ago... they took the whole thing apart, made it look as if the place was never there, and now, decades later, the exact same structures are there again. The place is weird. The construction techniques include every kind of method there is, block, iron, wood frame, metal frame, concrete... every kind of tradesman on earth was needed to build that thing, twice.
My guess is that the terror army is advertising for help wanted at that site in far away places to draw craftsmen to come to Oregon where they are captured and used as slaves, or are killed and replaced. It’s visible from I-5 at the exit 58 near Club Northwest, where the terror leadership is at, and CNW is the same as Grants Pass Chamber of Commerce as far as membership goes at the Club Northwest terror HQ. There used to be a National Security Administration Field Office next door to Club Northwest, but that seems to have been taken apart a different way, one NSA officer at a time, and was put back somewhere else as Department of Homeland Security, while they put a Department of Health Services where the NSA used to be, for confusion service. and to fulfill “insult to injury” terror protocols required by the Christian Church.
I am pretty sure that the leading Church components to the terror army are at the 9th St. Seventh Day Adventist Church, it’s next door to the Oregon State Police Field Office that’s on 7th St., but you have to hop over a block wall to get from one place to the other, last time I looked over there.
There is a fire station on Park St at the Grants Pass Pkwy intersection that is remarkable for having been built with that multi-faceted construction techniques that Cascade Storage is built with. The place is stunning to look at, is awesome building, is extreme expense for a fire station, way over the top, in my opinion.
These subjects of buildings are in the realm of a place called “Options of Southern Oregon” across from the Walgreen‘s, and another place called “Crisis Resolution Center” between where Walgreen’s and the Hospital are at, which might be the source of some of the most wicked of all of the killing contraptions used around here in Josephine County... very scary places are CRC and Options.
There are no shortages of impostors around here, so, in the event that someone who claiams to be the author of  this account has found some helpful people to talk to, that’s not the author of this account. Be advised that I think it was the Sparacino terror cell that stole all of my old pay stubs from back in the day, and has stolen much personal items, to use to impersonate the author of this information. Clyde Baum at 333 Jackpine is famous for the lengths he has gone to impersonate the author of this information also. Both Sparacino of 545 and Baum of 333 are supported in their efforts to impersonate by the local Oregon authorities.

Last fall, a fellow disability activist and close friend of mine introduced me to Bernie Sanders.  From the moment I first heard his platform, I was hooked.  After living abroad several years in a country with socialized medicine and heavily subsidized education, I was thrilled an American politician was proposing these policies here.  Due to my own disabilities, the cost of healthcare has become exorbitant and becoming chronically ill forced me to leave my career in public service litigation to collect meager social security benefits.  So, Bernie’s message resonated strongly with my own personal experience of being in the 99%.
Tumblr media
I was so moved by his message that I began volunteering for the campaign, be it through phonebanking, texting or simply bringing his message to everyone I knew.  I believed so strongly in the change he could effect that I even donated more money than I could otherwise afford to help his campaign succeed.  And I quickly became part of the Bernie or Bust movement, believing his campaign’s message that Clinton didn’t care about anyone other than her special interest donors.
____________________________________________________________
But I often struggled with his rhetoric on and lack of inclusion for people with disabilities in his stump speeches, acceptance speeches, debate performances, advertisements and campaign literature.  Despite discussing issues that affect our daily lives like healthcare, income inequality, social security and criminal justice, he almost never mentioned the disabled population, which makes up 20% of the American electorate.  He harped daily on how the Donald Trumps of the world try to divide us up based on our minority status but never even included disability as one of those dividing factors.
Meanwhile, I became more frustrated because Hillary Clinton was including us in every speech, ad campaign, debate performance and even intersectionality graphics of disabled people of color in her literature.  She issued press releases supporting the Disability Integration Act, which requires Obamacare plans to cover long-term care for people with disabilities, and talked about sub-minimum wage, a construct by which employers can legally pay the disabled less than minimum wage. Bernie either never did this or lagged behind, as if he was only doing it because Hillary was.  I sincerely felt as though Hillary was just paying lip service to us and that Bernie was simply uninformed.
So I began contacting the campaign as early as the fall to advise them on their disability outreach failures, as well as to communicate grave concerns the community was having with some on his policies. I tried every possible method of communication from emailing the campaign through the website and contacting them through social media, to direct emails and text messages to top political directors, including Jeff Weaver, BEGGING them to respond.  I also discovered that I was not the only disability activist experiencing this very frustration with the campaign.
_____________________________________________________________
After weeks of being ignored, the day after the New York elections, I sent one final message to the campaign saying that I was going to withdraw my support and advise the community to do the same if they didn’t care enough to even respond to our pleas for representation. Finally, his political director, Billy Gendell, a non-disabled male, responded by scheduling a phone call with me. I was finally hopeful once again, but what came next was personally devastating.  I began the conversation about the issues the community is having with his lack of rhetoric and lack of inclusion for people with disabilities, as I delineated in my emails.  I sincerely wanted to help the campaign improve.
However, he quickly interrupted me from giving them advice, despite knowing my credentials and insisted that I get to my policy questions.  But he asked that the answers remain “off-the-record” so that I could not share them with the community that was asking them.  His answers provided no new information or specific methods by which to initiate these broad ideas.  The only policy answer that wasn’t “off the record” was Bernie’s official statement on the opioid issue, sent to me via email. It said that chronic pain sufferers should seek yoga or guided meditation to ease our suffering.
I was shocked.  These recommendations are ones given to chronic pain sufferers by uneducated individuals with zero medical understanding of pain and the neurological system.  I immediately responded back to his email that he cannot expect an amputee with phantom pain to do yoga when in such dire pain that it causes his heart rate to soar and his blood pressure to plummet. I told him that it’s insulting to even insinuate such a thing. But, as, unfortunately, I expected, he never even replied, and I simply gave up trying to reach out.
____________________________________________________________
Meanwhile, none of his policies for people with disabilities changed, and he made little to no effort to include us in his speeches, other than to  occasionally discuss all disabled people in the context of social security, rather than his typical inclusion of only disabled veterans, as if only they matter because they became disabled at war.  (And I gave him credit on facebook for doing this once at the Washington square speech and emailed the campaign to thank them for it, which went unanswered) But he continued to fail to mention or depict us in any of his speeches or ads.
The feeling of devastating disappointment and betrayal sank in.  The thought of considering Clinton felt hypocritical of me.  I told myself, “How can I support someone who probably cares more about Wall Street than me?”  But I certainly couldn’t consider Donald Trump, who mocks disabled people and assumes we’re stupid enough to think that’s not what he was doing.  So, begrudgingly, I told a Hillary supporter with a disability that I was now considering supporting Hillary. He immediately introduced me via email to a blind Clinton staffer. Within literally minutes, she emailed me at 9 p.m. saying she would like to speak to me about the campaign. I was so encouraged by how quickly they responded, after the months I was ignored by Bernie.
She didn’t treat me like a nuisance like the Bernie campaign did but rather an asset.  She wanted to know my legal and advocacy opinion on disability policy.  She explained in detail how Hillary planned to initiate change for us with sophisticated, legal political strategy.  And, then she asked me to come on board and help the campaign best meet the needs of the disability community through, inter alia, writing for the campaign after they were able to officially vet my credentials.  (Which has not yet occurred, and I, in no way, am writing this on behalf of the campaign) I soon realized that the Clinton campaign didn’t just care about the disability community; they hired us and treated us like the intelligent people we are.
_____________________________________________________________
My conversation with the Clinton campaign regained my hopefulness but also made me incensed that Bernie is maliciously lying to democrats about Clinton’s uncaring regard for the 99%, while destroying the party from within.  Bernie is adamant that Hillary only cares about corporate interests and not the typical marginalized American.  But, in fact, the opposite is true.  If he cared about his supporters’ interests, his campaign would respond to these communities, listen to their issues and modify his platform accordingly.
His speeches never change for a reason. It isn’t because, as his supporters allege, he’s authentic and always on the right side of things. It’s because he doesn’t care to adapt, to research issues other than income inequality and the environment, follow up on his lofty ideas with solid policy initiatives or to make any compromises to achieve his goals. Rather, he just plays the blame game, pointing out everything that’s wrong with this country and proposing no specific plans to achieve his goals.  He prides himself on being so honest and trustworthy while lying to the electorate about his concern for our well being and Hillary’s lack thereof.  In reality, I see now that he doesn’t care about anyone’s well being but his own ability to rise to power.
What’s worse is that he is riling up his base to believe that the system is rigged, corrupt and rife with election fraud, based on theories grounded in conspiracy rather than fact. He’s excusing their violence and death threats on constituents’ frustration, rather than explicitly denouncing such vile behavior.  The superdelegates are voting for Hillary, and some are starting to shift support from Bernie to Hillary, which I suspect will continue to occur, because they are experienced policy makers who recognize that Bernie has proposed no actual comprehensive policies to achieve his goals.  They realize that, in the year he’s been running for President, he hasn’t created one single concrete plan. Superdelegates are in place to prevent dangerous politicians, like Trump, from achieving power when they don’t have the capabilities to effectively use that power and, thus, make things much worse in the end.
Coming to terms with these realizations was very difficult for me.  I literally grieved and cried when I discovered that I had been so maliciously misled by someone I believed to possess such a high moral compass.  I recognize that his supporters are frustrated and angry over income inequality, because I am too.  But I plea with his supporters to wake up to HIS fraud and ask yourselves why he answers every question on every topic, from ISIL to our broken public school systems, with concepts of income inequality.  It’s not because that issue is the root of all things wrong with our country but because he doesn’t care to research and be advised on any other issues, despite having the time and resources to do so.
Those of you who are Bernie or Bust, like I was, please, I beg of you, consider my personal experience.  Google me.  Find me on Facebook and Twitter.  See for yourselves that I was Bernie or Bust, that I’m not some Wall Street attorney rolling in money.  I am a disabled woman, struggling to make ends meet and to pay my medical bills.  But I now recognize that Clinton is the only candidate willing to make the effort to effect the change we need.  We cannot afford Trump or Bernie in the White House. They will only be given enough power to destroy what fragment of the American Dream we have left.
(For those who seem hell-bent on believing that my having lived in Israel somehow makes me biased: Bernie also lived there, I dislike the right-wing government there, and I continued my support for him after he criticized Israel in NY)

Woke up today to an email from a fellow manager, asking if I could call her as soon as I got the email. She sent it at about 9:30 this morning...I didn’t get up until almost 5:00pm.
But this is a manager I have enormous respect for, so I called. She wanted to meet “anywhere but at work” to talk about some drama that went down (this being my night off, the subject of the conversation was managing at our own casino tonight). So we met at another local casino to talk things out over a drink.
One of the other managers (who very few respect -- he doesn’t have mine) went off on one of my shift’s employees on Tuesday night over nothing at all (she was doing as her department manager has told her to do). I gave this employee’s direct boss a heads up over the situation, and she sent an email telling him that he had crossed the line, and that he owed the staff member an apology.
He sent an email back chastising her and the employee, and demanding an apology from HER. The manager she worked with today was nervous that things were going to get ugly when the jerk manager came in, so he recommended that she leave early, and she agreed in an effort to diffuse the situation. The jerk manager came in, looked for her, and then commented that she had left “with her tail between her legs.”
Now, she’s our only female manager. Once she heard about this, she knew that she HAD to stand up for herself -- she couldn’t be seen as the “woman running away” from the wannabe “manly-man.”
So she came back to work, found the jerk, and said “I’m here. Let’s do this.” Then she went into the office and waited for him.
It took him a couple minutes (probably to work up the courage), but he finally joined her in the office.
Thankfully, our collective boss was also in the office, and aware of the situation, and he put the kibosh on any further discussion until the situation is investigated.
So the property manager is now involved, as is Human Resources. Video is being looked at. And I now know, based on my conversation with the manager tonight, that when I get to work tomorrow, I’m going to be questioned about the situation (since I was the manager on duty when it went down). And honestly, I’m looking forward to it. Because I have a feeling that, when I give my own perspective on things, it’s going to go well for the respectable manager and not so well for the jerk.
I assured this respectable manager that I’ve got her back, as well as the back of the employee. I also assured her that tonight’s conversation “never happened” as far as the information I’ll provide.
The other manager was in the wrong. I’m in complete agreement with her. I didn’t tell him so at the time because we were on the casino floor and that is not the place to air grievances (even though he aired his to me on the casino floor -- and right in front of the employee). And he said in his email back to the respectable manager that he’d had a couple drinks, yet he wrote up the employee over the situation after receiving the respectable manager’s email (which our collective boss tore up -- if you’re off-duty and have been drinking, you don’t get to write up an employee in retaliation over an email you didn’t like from another manager).
I’m not looking to cost anyone their job (and I don’t think it’s going to go that far -- he may get written up, but we’re too short-staffed to fire him, and he’s our promotions guy who runs our parties and giveaways), but he’s had it out for this employee for a while. This shit has got to stop.
So there will be individual conversations with those involved (including the sports book employee who was conducting the transaction with my employee, even though he works for a different company that leases their space in the casino), and then there will be a group discussion among those involved so we can put this crap behind us and hopefully move on with us on the same page. I don’t know if jerk-manager will cooperate, but that’s on him. As for the rest of us, we’ll come to an agreement on how things should be done, we’ll (I assume) agree that the employee was right to page me instead of interrupting her transaction and leaving thousands of dollars sitting on the counter while she ran a promotion where someone might win $50 free play (they have a 10% chance of winning free play, and then if they do get the free play, there’s a 95% chance that it will be $5, and a 5% chance that it will be $50)...especially when I would have had to disqualify jerk-manager anyway if he had started the game without me there to witness it.
I mean, yes, I was dealing with a pretty major malfunction in our live Keno, but...I can multitask. I had actually just finished mitigating the problem (as far as I know it’s still a problem, but I had just learned how to solve it in the most fair way possible -- maybe I’ll post about that separately because this post is already long). But even if I hadn’t mitigated it for the moment, I’ve got my employees’ backs, and if they need help, that’s what I’m there for. That’s why I get paid lunches -- because if I’m needed on the floor, my lunch is over (which is why I take multiple short breaks and no long ones, because I don’t think a half-hour period EVER transpires at work where I’m not needed for something or another).
Schedules will be changed so this employee doesn’t have to work with that manager on my nights off. That may mean a change in the employee’s days off, or it may mean a change in my own days off. But he has been out to get this employee for so long that something has to be done to keep them separated.
She is by no means a perfect employee, but she knows her stuff, and does things (mostly) right (she does have a habit of spending too much time talking to some people, but...in this case the jerk manager came down on her for not interrupting a cash transaction to run a promotion for this other manager -- one that I have to be present for anyway when an employee participates). She paged me for assistance, which is all I ask (especially when I have to observe the employee’s turn anyway). I’m there to help. If the employee is doing one thing and something else comes up, I want to be paged so we can take care of both things at once.
Our boss even sent out an email not long ago, saying that we are there to assist, not just give directives (this jerk manager will see an empty glass and call a casino attendant over to pick it up; whereas I will see an empty glass and I’ll pick it up my damned self, because I’m not a lazy jerk). Our job, as managers, is to make our staff’s jobs easier, not to ride their backs over every little thing until they quit. Yes, there are times where we have to be the bad guy and correct behavior, but this was not one of those times -- the casino attendant did nothing wrong.
We have enough of a problem retaining staff as it is, paying $1 less than minimum wage. And this is an employee that we CANNOT afford to lose.
Oh, and remember how I was called in to work yesterday and decided not to go? Had it not been for this situation, I totally would have gone in. I mean, four hours of $18/hour overtime? That’s an extra $72 in my pocket on the next paycheck (less taxes, of course). But I was still pissed off about the situation, and I’d be working with the jerk manager, so that was why I didn’t go in.
I have to work with jerk-manager tomorrow for the first four hours of my shift (he’s actually scheduled for the first FIVE hours of my shift, but he ALWAYS leaves at 7:00 even though he’s scheduled until 8:00 -- something I may bring up in the conversation with my boss tomorrow to show that jerk manager doesn’t even work his full shift, since he’s taking advantage of his salaried status to work less for the same pay). So...that should be fun.
If he doesn’t bring up the situation, neither will I. I’ll have my chat with my boss and then let it go (depending on his behavior during the shift, of course). But if he does, I’ll ask him to join me in the office and have it out with him, but I am NOT having the discussion on the casino floor within earshot of guests and employees.
I’m gonna keep my nose clean in this. Well, at least I’m gonna try. I mean, yes, things may get ugly, and my nose may get a little dirty. But it’s not gonna happen in public. It’s gonna happen on MY terms, not his.
This is the guy who trained me when I hired in (people are always surprised that he’s the one who trained me, because...well, I’m actually good at my job, unlike him; I’ve learned from my experiences over the past year and a half and applied that knowledge instead of spending my time doing the same tree magic tricks for guests while ignoring actual casino issues).
While he may be a great guest relations-type person, he is NOT management material when it comes to dealing with employees.
Anyway, I’m glad I met with the manager I respect tonight to get more of the story (even though I have to pretend that conversation never happened when I give my side of the story to my boss tomorrow). It was work drama on a day off, but...it was also profitable (the casino I suggested we meet at had given me $10 free play, which I turned into $20 cash as I absent-mindedly played video poker during the conversation -- I wouldn’t have played at all, but if I wasn’t playing, I wouldn’t have gotten the free drink [well, with a $2 tip -- because when I tended bar at my own casino on graveyard, may favorite guests were the $2 tippers; I could have gotten away with $1, but this bartender, while he hasn’t seen me for a while, knows me as a $2 tipper]).
Usually a situation like this would make me nervous as hell. I would NOT be looking forward to the interview that’s to come. But in this case, I’m MORE than happy to present the situation as I know it (my biggest fear is saying something that shows that respectable-manager and I had a conversation about it tonight, but our conversation didn’t change anything in my view of the situation; it was more about her venting so she could enjoy her days off without dwelling on this situation; I plan to uphold my promise to her that, as far as our boss is concerned, “this conversation never happened”).

Where have all the mothers gone?

Romania’s parents are leaving to work abroad in the absence of a living wage at home, and children are paying the price
Tumblr media
The drive from the northwest Romanian city of Iasi to the village of Liteni is a winding route through an open vista of sunflowers. Tractors work the fields next to peasants driving battered horse-and-carts, heavy with hay. On a fallow meadow outside the village, a shepherd with a tanned face holds up a gnarled wooden crook, and calls to his flock. The sheep pass by a lake, recently restocked with carp, and now open for fishing.
Crossing a narrow bridge into the village, we drive along roads that kick up clouds of dust, between rows of houses - new and old. Many are unfinished, with bright tiled roofs, and exteriors of plaster, standing on land scattered with building tools and broken pieces of fence.
We follow the road to the heart of the village, accompanied by the local school headteacher, George Moga, who points to the buildings.
“That house was made with money from Greece,” Moga says. “That one - with earnings from Italy.”
It’s a torrid July day and Moga takes us to a smallholding which breeds pigs and chickens. He introduces the owners, a family led by father Costel Butnaru.
“Come here in the strawberry season,” he says, “you won't find the shadow of a woman in this village!”

“It may be tough abroad, but being left behind is worse.”
Costel’s wife Vasilica, 44, has been on the road between home and work for eight years. She travels from Romania to Almonte, Huelva, in southwest Spain, where she shares a room with five women. From March to mid-summer, they pick strawberries and in September, they prepare plants for the coming season.
“I got left behind to take care of the children,” says Costel. “I taught them how to write, took their hands in mine and we drew letters together. I was trying my best to be there for them, and make sure they have what they need.”
A decade ago Vasilica was a housewife, and Costel was earning ‘nice money’ working in construction in Bucharest. But since the financial crisis of 2008, he could not find stable employment.
Sometimes there is work in the vineyards of nearby wine-maker Cotnari. Over 35 kilometres away is a car upholstery factory in Lețcani, but they only pay the minimum wage, plus food vouchers. Costel would need to commute by bicycle, even at night, and in weathers that can reach minus 20 degrees.
“It may be tough abroad,” says Costel, “but being left behind is worse.”
Romanians now has one of the highest percentages of its citizens working abroad in Europe, and many come from rural areas such as Liteni, where work is scarce or poorly-paid.
The villagers moved abroad to work in building, fruit-picking, housekeeping or care work in Italy, Spain, Germany and Cyprus.
But since the construction boom in southern Europe collapsed in 2008, the jobs available favour skills usually associated with women - which means a new phenomenon is emerging in Romania: villages with few - if any - women of working age, and large numbers of children growing up without a mother.
“We didn’t have our Sunday rest. We even worked on Easter Day.”
13 year old Gabi Butnaru has just finished 6th grade in the village of Liteni.
“Mommy used to help me read,” she says. “Sometimes she would help me with homework.”
But her mother has been leaving for work abroad since her daughter was in kindergarten. This year, on 9 March, a day after International Women’s Day, she left to pick strawberries and raspberries on a farm in Lucena, Spain.
Gabi’s life changed. When her father was out farming, she had to learn how to bake potatoes, make soup, and clean and feed the pigs, cows and chickens, before she could find the time to study.
“It was tough,” says Gabi, her eyes welling up with tears. “Finding the energy to do it all, to do it well…” With a straight face, she starts crying.
Her mother Mihaela is now back in Romania. It was tough for her to be away from home, among foreigners, and working for a boss with high expectations, whose language she did not speak.
She shared a room with four other women on the farm. Monthly rents in the nearby Spanish town were around 250 Euro per month, and the women needed to keep this cash for home.
Mihaela worked to exhaustion.
“We didn’t have our Sunday rest,” she says. “We even worked on Easter Day!”
Collecting strawberries is painful work. Pickers must bend over seven days a week, up to eight hours a day, plus overtime, and need to move fast through the bushes.
“I only got up to move when I carried the crates of fruit,” Mihaela says. “There is no stool to sit on, and nowhere to sit at all. Some women can rest on their fists, but I can’t. My back is killing me! When pain cuts like a knife, you feel like throwing in the job!”
Her husband Petre runs through the list of drugs his 33 year-old wife takes to Spain: painkiller Ketonal for backache, paracetamol for toothache, valerian herb for stress relief, and aspirin to increase the blood flow.
Despite the physical pain at work, and the emotional pain at home, Mihaela says: “We don’t have a choice: we need the money!”
Her husband broke his left leg 12 years ago, and cannot bend it. Now he works odd jobs, such as shoeing horses, welding and ploughing.
“He earns enough for bread and a bottle of cooking oil,” says Mihaela. “But with these earnings, child benefit and tiny aid from the local government, one can’t afford much.”
The family sometimes landed in debt, which she needed to pay off, and meant leaving abroad for longer, while her injured husband stayed at home with her daughter.
“A child is suffering,” she says. “She’s doing hard household work and yet she’s only a child. She shouldn’t be exploited, she’s so young! She’s had a lot to bear from a very young age!” Mihaela’s voice fades and tears resume. “I can’t bear being apart from them!”
Gabi nods through her sobbing, and admits she was crying often on the phone to her mother, asking Mihaela to return. Will she let her mother go abroad again?

“No!” Gabi says without hesitation, wiping her face dry. “All I want is us all to be at home, united, and to be a happy family.”

“School, clean, cook, do homework, sleep, repeat”
13 year-old Lavinia’s mother left to Spain for the first time this year to pick fruit, and she had to take on her mother’s duties. This was stressful, as Lavinia loves to feel prepared for the school day, which lasts from 8 am to 2 pm. “Then I would clean, cook, do homework, sleep,” she says, “get up in the morning. Get dressed. Brush hair. Go to school. Repeat.”
She is in a class where 13 of her fellow pupils from 28 have parents working abroad. In many cases, this has ruined marriages, and the parents divorced.
“These pupils are not how they used to be,” says Lavinia. “They’re more distant, more reserved, less childish. Some of their grades are falling. All they can think about is the break-up of their parents.”
The number of children growing up with one or two parents working abroad is in the 100,000s in Romania, and could account for around ten per cent of all kids in the country, though true statistics are sketchy.
At the primary and middle school in Liteni, 115 pupils from 350 have at least one parent working abroad. The headteacher George Moga says economic migration scars many of the children left behind.
“We’ve experienced cases of child burn-out,” Moga says. “Parents who work abroad tell children that they are doing this for them. Meanwhile, the child’s sole duty is to study hard, so children who have to learn to manage without a parent’s help or supervision, drown themselves in study or household chores, and often end up unable to smile.”

Nation on the Minimum Wage
The United Nations believes around 3.4 million Romanians have emigrated since the fall of Communism - 17 per cent of the country’s citizens.
Every village in the country has seen its share of work migrants - officially there are now over one million Romanians are in Italy, 900,000 in Spain, 600,000 in Germany and 180,000 in the UK, but the real figure is greater.
At first glance, an observer would ask whether this was due to Romania’s rapid deindustrialisation following Communism, which must have witnessed a surge in unemployment.
But on paper, only 4.18 per cent of Romanians are jobless. One of the lowest numbers in the EU. So why do they move abroad?
Firstly, there is no job security. Only 5.1 per cent of the working poor aged 16 to 64 have a permanent employment contact.
Secondly, wages are too low. The country has the second lowest minimum wage in the EU - at a net value of 1,065 Lei (232 Euro) per month. Over 230,000 citizens earn less than the minimum wage. The state has to top up the difference with benefits.
Thirdly, too many employers pay this rock-bottom salary. According to Labour Inspection agency data, around a third of contracts covering full and part time jobs pay the national minimum wage or under.
Romania’s average (median) salary, the net cash that families take home at the end of the day - is the EU’s lowest - at 2,448 Euro per annum, and has been since the crisis of 2008. Bulgaria beats it with 3,151 Euro, according to Eurostat.
This is set against the fact that prices of goods and energy costs are more or less the same as in western Europe.
“An increased number of sexual abuse cases”
This behaviour of the children left behind changes. A 2012 UNICEF report, and a Soros Foundation study found that parent migration was one of the main causes of children leaving school early. In general, one in five kids in Romania leave school early. This rate is on the rise - to 19.1 per cent in 2015, according to an EU report.
Director of the Social Assistance and Child Protection Services (DGASPC) in Iaşi Niculina Karacsony says a major problem is that many children have not been prepared by their parents for a temporary separation.
“We’re not condemning parents who leave to earn a living abroad,” says Karacsony. “But we are condemning those who do so without preparing their children for the separation, and who do not communicate often with them.”
This is backed up by Alex Gulei, executive director of Alternative Sociale, an NGO in Iaşi which works closely with DGASPC. “One thing that comes up again and again is that they hate when parents forget to Skype at 7 pm as they are expecting, or promise to return on a date when they don’t,” says Gulei. “They hate it when parents do not deliver on their word.”
In the most extreme cases, say experts, kids left behind by parents have died following irreversible depression. Another problem is domestic violence. Among the cases of children of migrant workers that are referred to DGASPC Iaşi, its director stresses “an increased number in cases of sexual abuse”.
This most commonly happens within the family, and when mothers are not at home. Some fathers have not seen their wives for a long time, and have taken to drink, while brothers have abused their siblings. Victims have been as young as three years’ old.
“I grew up with my parents fighting. This was our normal.”
19 year-old Andreea’s mother worked abroad in Italy during her teenage years, leaving her and her younger sister with a father who took to drink and violence.
“I grew up with my parents fighting,” she says. “This was our normal. I was glad when mommy left because my father was brutal with her. Finding work in Italy was her escape.“
Now she is a volunteer organising social activities at the Alaturi de Voi Foundation, which aims to reduce teenage pregnancies and drug abuse, and offers young people social and psychological support.

Just before Andreea became a teenager, her mother, a sales assistant, needed money because she was in debt after defaulting on bank loans. Her earnings from work in Italy covered the interest payments, and she could send cash home only for food.
“But there would be times when father would waste all the money on smoking or another of his addictions,” she says. ”He became jealous, and suspected my mother of cheating.”
Her mother telephoned often and saw her daughters once or twice a year. But having to step into her mother’s role, take care of her little sister and the house, meant Andreea would be fainting, and feeling sick, and soon developed gastritis.
”It was mainly because of stress, but also poor nutrition,” she says. “I was young when mother left, I couldn't cook and was eating instant soup all the time.”
During this time, the teenager was admitted to hospital for five times with gastritis.
As her parents’ marriage disintegrated, her father began hitting his two daughters.
”He filed for a divorce, thinking this would bring my mother home and make her stay,” she says. “Mother saw this as her chance to escape a bad marriage and she took it.”
As the separation began, Andreea’s father kicked his two kids out of the house. They did not even have time to pack their belongings. In shock, they sought refuge at their grandparents’ house, where - due to the age gap - they would have constant arguments.
“I asked my mother to come home immediately, as I could not look after myself,” she says. “But because we would be left with no money, I had to wait for her to save for one more year.”
Alexandra says that she has lived in “total stress” most of the years spent away from her mother.
“If someone is confrontational or raises their voice, I’m in tears,” she says. “I cry out randomly and I don’t understand why.”

(he may have been the first one to die, but I’m the one who paid for it. I’m the one who paid for it)
Here it is for you. For those of you who have been asking and even for those of you who haven’t. What am I doing? What happens next?
Let me bring you up to speed.
This summer I wrote and completed my thesis for my degree. I wrote on leadership at arts and cultural organizations undergoing substantial change.
It was completed in August. My marks came back in October. It passed with Distinction.
I am very proud of it, and as such, will be revising the work for publication. (That in itself is a long road and a different story for another time.)
And to answer a popular question: no, you may not read it right now.
At the time I was finishing said thesis, I had the pleasure of working for the Edinburgh International Festival as they put up their landmark 70th season this August. It was quite a new experience working on the press team and working through a festival that was spread out across the city and compacted into four weeks, as opposed to ten.
That opportunity there was worth the investment of coming to undertake this degree. I can hear some of you now raising an eyebrow about the value of work experience versus academic institutions, and I’ll tell you that by a long series of complicated and convoluted UK working laws, that experience would not have been possible without undertaking the degree.
Since that time I have been working at various locations that don’t need going into, as I have hunted for a more permanent position here. To be clear, I have been hunting for such position since April of this year and one can surmise that rejection after rejection might make a person feel rather defeated. And given this, it took me quite a long time to realize that I was not the problem. It took the Director of Development at a Scottish National Performing Company telling me that I had a strong application and did several things that the application required that no other candidate had done to realize that though I was young, fresh out of school (again) and seemingly too eager, I was playing in the same league as other Edinburgh arts managers. The problem, as people have been telling me, and as I have now realized, is not me. The problem is the system.
You would not enjoy me going into the details of what it would take for me to secure a full-time, permanent job in the arts and cultural sector here. Feel free to research it on your own, but essentially it comes down to UK Immigration Rules Appendix J: codes of practice for skilled work, which is a document that limits the categories of jobs eligible for sponsorship under a Tier 2 working visa. There are other requirements of the sponsoring organization, such as who can be hired from outside the UK or European Union without having to undergo the Residency Labour Market Test. Essentially, there are about four large, immovable factors that bar me from being employed here long-term. And due to this, I am returning to the United States.
[Those of you who do NOT want to hear me pontificate on this matter, this is really all you need to know. See you soon.]
This has been hard for me to stomach, especially while watching the successes of my friends. Any of my pals from mainland (or island nations) Europe that are from countries with in the EEA who are reading this, you’re about to be mildly offended. You don’t know how easy you have it. You can move and work freely within the EEA without trouble. There’s potential to even be employed in two or more EU nations at once. Unless an organization wants to go through the time, money and paperwork of making a case to the Home Office for me to remain here in the UK, I cannot get a job. I don’t have the luxury of a fancy legal loophole by which I can trace my ancestry back through to Europe and thereby apply through said European country’s US embassy for citizenship: all of my ancestors who might serve as proof of such are dead. No tricks, no workarounds for me. You can see why the complaints of Europeans not being able to find a job in Edinburgh’s oversaturated arts market fall on deaf ears with me. You can work abroad so easily, experience different languages and cultures with so much more acceptance. I know many of you want to stay in Edinburgh but YOU CAN GO WHEREVER IN EUROPE YOU WANT.
Some of you might make (and have made) the argument that I am able to work wherever in the US that I want (true), and that each state is like its own tiny little nation (not exactly), and isn’t that the same thing? No. That’s like saying the cultures of Kentucky and Montana are as different as those of Ireland and Greece. I think you’ll find that if you went there, Kentucky and Montana are actually quite similar in a lot of ways and then go ahead and tell an Irishman he’s basically the same as a Grecian. See what happens. However, without the lived experience of working in the US, I suppose you’ll never really understand, no matter how plain I make my explanations. You’ve never been refused letting of a flat in the UK based on your nationality because your status as an EEA citizen supersedes it. It makes your application, from one important angle, irrefutable (Well, at least for now.)
So yes, we’ve all had it bad. We’re a crew of smart people who have been shot into a market already teeming with talent in our field and because we are millennials living in an age still controlled by Baby Boomers, they expect us to rise to the top as they did when they “were your age.” As they did when $6 an hour working in a mailroom but them through college. Today, to put oneself through college at any reasonably-priced university (because hey Europeans!, I could never go to uni for free!) we would need to be making $18 an hour. Too bad the Federal minimum wage in American is only $7.25. But the fact of the matter is, that I have to return home because the UK will not move mountains to employ me, and strangely, I believe that is because it simply does not want to.
This, I find absurd. Long have we Americans hailed Great Britain for its utopia-like public funding for the arts, purely because their government has chosen to make arts and culture a policy priority longer than the US has. (And the Prime Minister, unlike the current US President, has not tried to entirely defund the National Endowment for the Arts in a political budget move...) American arts managers have had to contend with steadily diminishing budgets for years, and that mentality has now more visibly crept into the UK as well, with the rise of far-right values that hearken back to a darker age of Westernized war. “Devastating” arts cuts in the UK may be coming this January, as the public and the policymakers begin to question whether continued publicly funding for the arts is worth it. To combat this potentiality, I have watched as organizations here have scraped their budgets for salary money to hire fundraising managers to pilot, embolden, or overhaul individual giving programs. One would think that these organizations who haven’t had to grapple with the task of asking audiences for additional funds on top of what they pay in taxes, would be most interested to take on someone who has experience in working at organizations who have had to stake their livelihood on these exact kinds of donations. Just the other day I was told “Try and get some experience in fundraising, the UK is looking for fundraising people right now with all these cuts.” This individual, clearly unfamiliar with my background (I may not be the Region’s Best Individual Fundraiser but I’m not stupid) completely underscores my point. With such a demand for individuals with these skills, why on earth would they evict someone with these skills, when that person could be of great assistance?
Because of UK Immigration Rules Appendix J: codes of practice for skilled work. That’s why. If you’re not British, not working in hard science, and don’t have a PhD, you’re nothing. There, I just saved you having to read all 26 pages of the document.
It’s lunacy. Here I am, a smart, capable person, now defeated by a webpage that says “you don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here.” What to do as a monolingual in modern Europe? Little. You try getting an EU Blue Card (yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like.) That prospect is tragically unlikely. So back I go, to a political nightmare in which fetuses are due to be classified as individuals for TAX REASONS upon passage of the #goptaxscam, 13 million Americans will lose health care coverage with the rescinding of the PPACA individual mandate, and the Federal Communication Commission is so interested in providing flawless internet services to only the wealthiest that without a job, and without a reasonable income, I may never be able to afford to update this blog again.
So here we are, right at the end. That’s the story, that’s the update. And it makes me mad. I undertake one of the best experiences of my life, and as a result, find that upon reentering society from the haven of academia that society wants to remind me:
YOU’RE NOTHING
YOU’RE NOTHING
YOU’RE NOTHING
The older and wiser of you reading this are likely thinking “That’s what we call life/it’s not always easy/you just have to figure it out/take your lumps/can’t expect to have everything handed to you.” You probably think I sound like a self-entitled millennial. But I didn’t come here to please you. I came here to put down my thoughts, to take one last wallow. To metaphorically prepare for battle through extended complaint.
I didn’t write this for your pity. I didn’t write this for your comments. I wrote this to explain to everyone why when I say I’m leaving I don’t want to see you pull a sad face and say “Don’t go!” “Don’t go” is not an option anymore. I have to, and you know that. It’s a first world problem for sure, being able to hop right back home to a welcoming family in what seems to be one of the only states who actually knows what they’re doing: don’t think I can’t see my privilege (white, and otherwise) in all of this. But this is not a joyous homecoming. This is a return marked by having been defeated by a sector that has been influenced by a government that hate and fear have crept into. America is the cause. And while others my run from it to the other side of the ocean with their bought passports or observe from far away, fortunately-fated with a heritage they didn’t get to select, I will be flying into the thick of it. Biding my time. Preparing my next move. I will celebrate the turn of the new year and cope with the coming age. And when the UK’s arts cuts come and Edinburgh finds itself in need of someone like me, I might pause to glance at the news. Until then, I’ll leave this place that opened me to academia and then turned around and told me I was nothing and return to the fray. (How’s that for a “Welcome to hell?”)
It’s been something, Edinburgh. Thank you, David. See y’all on the other side.

The American University System: Oppressing the non-elite.
So let me get this straight...in the 70's there was a community outcry to lower the amount of tax money that got put towards college tuition for future generations? American tax payers used to cover over 70% of college costs, allowing the young students straight out of highschool the ability to work a minimum wage summer job to literally pay their entire tuition. Those with part time jobs while in school were not very common. This allowed for an ability to succeed without the unnecessary baggage of financial stress and lack of sleep at 18 years old while taking 14+ credits, which for those of you who dont know is a true 40-60 hour work week alone. All of this hard work and achievement paved the way for these kids to enter adulthood as educated, debt free, and with the world at their fingertips. Not to mention, they had the incredible privilege of not having to become a self sufficient adult in the middle of the worst economic crisis since the depression...
Compare that romantic reality to our drastically different reality today. I will use my experiences as an example for this, while probably on the extreme spectrum of experiences, they are valid and carry merit nonetheless. I was always told as a child, "you have to go to college, its not an option" Yet, when i graduated highschool, my parents grew quiet. I grew up in a 5 person household in Orange County, CA (one of the most expensive places to live in the country) in a family who made roughly $40k a year, give or take (thats poverty folx). My step-father was an electrical contractor so income was often spuratic. Anyway, needless to say they had not one penny saved for my college tuition. My parents failed to put a single penny aside for anything regarding my well-being honestly. With no car, no money, no job, and no idea when or how I could recieve a college education, I was kicked out of my parents at 17 years old with nowhere to go. I couch surfed and was able to get a couple jobs, one at a crafts store and one at a sandwhich shop. After 2 long years of working my way out of homelessness, all I wanted was to start college! So, at age 19 I applied for financial aid. However, I was told because I was under 25 I needed my parents tax information. Well, my parents never filed on time and were incredible dodgy with communication. So, after months of going back and forth I ended up paying out of pocket for a full time coarse load at a community college. I was able to work my jobs and pay this, but with nothing left over for rent or food. I ended up getting kicked out of my place, had to apply for foodstamps, and had to start over from square one. Little did I know I would have to wait 5 years before I could finally give college another shot.
I had almost given up the idea of higher education. I was making good money in the food industry at this point and had a nice company car and a great home with an awesome roommate. But then, I met a boy. We traveled the country for three months with his bluegrass band and saw 32 states. Afterwards, we again found ourselves broke and homeless. We hunkered down, worked 80+ hour weeks, saved up, and moved to Portland Oregon, "where young people go to retire". Little did we know, retire would be the LAST thing we did when we got there. Cost of living was rising in Portland, but still nothing compared to Orange County, CA. We got good food jobs and nested for about a year. My boyfriend (we will call him N) got great grades in highschool and high test scores in his exit exams, so in 2014 he chose to get back into school as a Music Composition Major at age 26. His journey is a whole other terrible story. I wanted to return to school so badly, but knew I had to wait until I was old enough to not warrant my parents tax info. Finally, at age 24 I filed my FAFSA and went to a career counselor. I was directed in the career of Civil Engineering. Having no prior knowledge of this career or topic, I dove in blindly headfirst. I chose a community college due to the fact that I barely finished highschool and did not take ant exit exams. To my surprise, I did very well in my college settings. After one year I was able to transfer to a university! Me! I WAS GOING TO A UNIVERSITY! I could not believe it, and was soo excited. I had no clue how hard this would be, not the work, but just surviving through it. I should mention here that I have a mild dissability. I have endometriosis which is a chronic illness linked to hormones, ovarian cysts, and all that jazz which can result in disabling pain and in my case an emergency surgery from time to time. I also suffer from a mild form of PTSD. So, with those alone handling high stress loads can be very hard on my mental and physical well being.
Ok, so I was a 24 year old first generation college student (first person in my family to go to college) disabled lower class person wanting a higher education. Seems logical right? Well, once I got accepted to the university, I chose to change my major to Architecture, I had taken an intro class for general ed and fell inlove. My beginning of my first year was great! Lots of lectures and reading. Aside from my tuition multiplying literally 3x from my community college tuition which did not affect my financial aid disbursement, I was fairly stress free. Now keep in mind, my partner and I are both working 20-30 hour weeks to make ends meet while taking 12-14 credits. Its basically having 2 full time jobs. Anyway, the last term of my first year came around-my first studio class. I was so excited! Time to actually do architecture! I got the syllabus and was told was supplies were needed to be successful in the class. I was also told that doing all of the requirements for the assignment would result in a C grade, if any grade above that was desired extra work had to be put in. I thought, no biggie, bring it on. The next thing she said was, "absolutely no sleeping in the studio!" Thats when I had a feeling I was gonna be in trouble. After class I went to the art store got my supplies. I almost started crying as they read my total to me: "$682.80, please." And that was with my student discount and not including all of the future supplies I would need just for that term, which I will tell you now after all the drawings and models ended up being about $2,000. That is a whole lot. These studio classes also require many all-nighters just to have enough time to complete the assignments. Many times, due to having to work outside of school I could not complete my assignments or had to do them with less craft and care than I would like just to turn it in. This year, I recieved less in financial aid, my rent has gone up significantly, tuition went up, and there are new grade requirements: if you get anything less than a B-, youre immediately dropped from the school of Architecture. So, not completing assignments isnt an option anymore. This last term costed my much less money, but once I told my instructor I was out of money, his response was, "well, this is Architecture school." What the fuck am I supposed to do with that!? A roll of Velum (drafting design paper) costs $50-$70 pencils are $2 a piece, models cost like $100 each, the list of tools go on and on. I am already paying $10k a year for tuition, ensuring at the very least $70k of debt including my masters degree which you need to get your Architecture license. And at least $100k with the $500 a month I need to borrow a month for rent. I should not need to add thousands more of that for supplies my school should be providing. And this insane pressure of pulling all nighters to get done the amount of assignments it would take us to do in a whole week last term in 2 days!
The moral of this very long story is that college is not meant for those of us trying to climb the life ladder. Its meant for the already elite. Its meant for kids right out of highschool with parents who make enough money to pay their tuition, their rent, their whole lives! Meant for kids who travel to Europe for the summer instead of working 60 hours a week to make up for the money lost during school cuz you physically cannot work more than 25 hours. Its meant for kids who can call their mommies and complain about how mean their teacher is, not for those of us who cry every night about being afraid of ending up back on the streets in the snap of a finger. Its meant for kids who can work and think about school all day every day, not those of us preoccupied with being able to pay all of our bills and being able to afford food and health insurance.
HOWEVER, even if you are like me, worse, or better, YOU CAN DO IT! I have a damn 3.7 GPA. I may only get 3 hours of sleep a lot, cry almost weekly, probably have lost years of my life due to stress, and feel scared for my health, but shit IM FUCKING DOOOOIN IT! Even though our government, or school presidents, and pretty much everyone in power disagrees, you are so worth it and you are so capable of success no matter how much harder you have to work than everyone else. Because we have to work so much harder now, we will get to party that much harder when we make it. I WILL GRADUATE IN SPITE OF THE SYSTEM! I WILL SUCCEED IN SPITE OF THE SYSTEM! I WILL CHANGE THE FUCKING WORLD CUZ I AM A BADASS AND CAN DO ANYTHING YOU PRIVELEDGED FUCKS CAN DO, JUST BETTER!
