reading lotr in chronological order got me thinking "this is a really cool way to read lotr!" which in turn got me thinking in why tolkien chose to write the events happening with sam and frodo in books 4 and 6, while 3 and 5 follows aragorn and co. i guess the most apparent reason is that you first see the rest of the fellowship doing everything they can to win this war, even though they depend on frodo completing his quest and having no idea if he'll succeed or even if he's still alive, but they still do all they can anyway, and this format puts the reader in the same position as the characters. it's the same when aragorn, legolas, and gimli are looking for merry and pippin, neither them nor we know what’s at the end of the road, but they go ahead anyway

My in-universe explanation as to why Adam has so many inconsistent last names is that he just lies because of his line of work and his rocky relationship with his parents.

I can imagine Tapp or whoever asking "What was your last name again?" And Adam says "Stanheight."

"Wait, wasn't it Faulkner or something?"

"Yes, Faulkner-Stanheight. My parents are divorced." (They're not, but that doesn't matter)

His real last name is Radford but no one needs to know that. He'd forget it himself if he could.

I've lived different lives

The Shinichi-POV AMV I edited to pair with my Heiji-POV AMV for COMPASS: A HeiShin Anthology, which you can download for free and read all about @haidocityzines!

Like Heiji's video, Shinichi's also uses a song by Fly By Midnight, "Different Lives," which took all of one listen for me to want to make a HeiShin AMV set to it. The zine includes a short essay with more details and thoughts, but to expand a little, in the time since I finished this video, I've written about what I think would be "the most narratively tragic ending for HeiShin," arguing that it would be either of them dying:

Shinichi becomes Conan because he does not rely on others or ask for help. (After all, if he trusted Ran to follow Vodka with him, there’s no way events would have carried out like they do.) Through being Conan, he’s somewhat forced to rely on others and ask for help, but when it comes to Heiji, it’s really a choice. He wants to investigate cases together. He wants Heiji to help him. So, if Heiji were to die in a case or in the fight against the Black Organization, I could see Shinichi falling back into his pre-Conan days. Relying on Heiji and trusting him got him killed. It’s better to do things alone, to not let anyone in. The progress Shinichi’s made throughout the series would be undone.

And that's something I was going for with the video, too. Shinichi is terrified of losing his loved ones, but there's a different level of terrified when it comes to losing Heiji. Because Heiji is someone he trusts. Heiji is someone he lets in. To lose that would be debilitating. Render him hopeless.

Because that's another thing about Heiji: he's hope. His alcohol (Episodes 48-49) serves as the first cure to APTX 4869. It gives Shinichi, literally, the first taste of victory—of undoing the poison, of taking the Organization down. Shinichi's life was so different before Heiji, and to be left without him... that's unfathomable. Terrifying.

Bless Mokumokuren for outright stating that the genre tags for Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu have never changed, i.e. the official site never dropped the "BL" tag from the series as it got more popular to reach a wider audience. It's been a persistent rumor in the fandom, and one I'm afraid will start circulating again once the anime starts airing.

If you mainly follow English language sources, please remember that whatever tags different anime and manga sites, databases, aggregators etc., either add or leave out don't always reflect the author's intent and the official sources, and should NOT be used to argue for what genre or demographic a certain work belongs to. It can just be random people claiming whatever they want based on their own interpretations and I've seen plenty of errors and real time changes to them based on new chapter developments, that might help catch the attention of some people, but don't suddenly change the genre of the work itself.

Not having BL as a genre tag also doesn't mean that a work can't include any boys loving. The queer themes have always been present in HGSN, and if you're up to date with the manga, they've been outright stated. Having queer characters or a queer story line doesn't automatically mean that a work is BL or yuri, and not including those tags doesn't mean that it's just "baiting". This gets brought up so much I think Mokumokuren's gotten tired of it, because the other day they clearly spelled it out for everyone, assuring that the story is queer, although it's not tagged as BL or focused on romance.

Here's what they shared on their Bluesky account:

The genre tag and advertising direction on the official website have never changed since the beginning of serialization. From the beginning, it has been consistently promoted as a "coming-of-age horror" within the official reach. (It's also true that the official reach is very limited…) Whatever the genre tag is, and even if this story isn't a romance, as the author, I guarantee that it is a queer story. There seems to be a persistent false rumor going around that "the author suddenly removed the BL tag from the official website by the 3rd volume," but the truth is that there was never an official BL tag from the beginning. (This is not to deny any queerness.)

My opinion that the genre of The Summer Hikaru Died is something that the readers are free to think about on their own remains unchanged, but I view it as a story that sympathizes with those who have been left out of stories about love and sex, so I describe it as "coming-of-age horror." I think the key is the fear of not being “normal” and not having a place to belong, which is common for all kinds of people regardless of their attributes. I think it's fine for queer stories that aren't romances to exist. That's why I've been careful not to position it as a love story from the start.

Let's stop obsessing over tags and allow queer stories to exist and thrive, even when they lack a clear romantic plot or subplot and are more subdued.

so yeah idk why but sometimes when I'm reading a fic I just forget that danny phantom was a tv-show FOR KIDS!

so then I am having all these angsty plosts in my head and then it's getting a little too angsty, but then I remember that danny phantom is just really angsty from the start.

and then I am just like "oh fuck, danny phantom was a kids show." so, yeah.

so I am now busy with writing the canon stuff from danny phantom, because I also tend to forget what's canon and fanon :)

look i love being a humanities student and all, but constantly debating everything and criticizing societal norms and views in every single lesson gets tiring really quickly. and today my prof said that most humanities academics are on the more liberal side of things. which is not at all surprising. but being too liberal is not necessarily a good thing.

it gets to a point where it's just like there is no right and there is no wrong. it just is. everything is just is.
