(i’m trying to kinda get out of my comfort zone & try to leave more open feedback under authors whose writing claws both my interest & admiration. so bc of that,i apologise in advance if my comment comes off as too much,messy or generally awkward😅)

sorry if i sound too rambly but i just need to say it somewhere,i physically can’t miss on the opportunity to speak & gush abt your writing,your creation & the chokehold it has on me!!

stumbling by chance through the wrk of art that your mind has crafted has been the best thing that could have happened to me the last 6 months!

the story that your brilliant mind has come up w/ & your great ability in putting it down,in narrating it so well, made so i just couldn’t stop reading: i needed to know where the beginning,the premise,was heading. i needed to know what would happen next. i needed to know where u would take this story,what turn would u take, how u would bring your characters to life & how they would play their roles in the story. i needed to know how u would make everything shift,grow,change,evolve,start,begin,finish etc in the story. i needed to see 4 myself your creation to the extent it would reach w/ each new chapter!

i’ve been talking(maybe a bit too passionately,srry 4 that😅) abt your story but let’s not neglect your writing!

i feel like your writing is the main reason i got so engrossed into the story. 

your writing is breathtaking! it’s so curated & rich in thoughtful detail! its form is so smooth & clear,making reading it smth that occurs naturally & in a pleasant continuous way. your way of writing is so intoxicating,addictive to be precise.

…on a sillier note,i really think it’s addictive,literally couldn’t stop reading & i may have got so much into reading that i forgot to have breakfast & lunch💀(no worries,they pulled me out of my induced hyper-attention & slapped me back into reality by the hour of dinner😂)

now,focusing more onto things of the story that stuck out to me b4 i lose my scattered brain cells that i managed to collect a bit:

-like another anon mentioned b4, it’s the 1st time i see it & i can only appreciate it. i’m talking abt how u have amalgamated the element of both the supernatural & paganism into the story,w/out being smth that clashed w/ the flow or the usual elements of the hybrid trope. it’s also a very important example of representation & diversity(like anon pointed out w/ the example abt christianity being almost the sole belief often represented,w/out bashing the religion itself ofc). as some1 who isn’t pagan themselves,respectfully, i found it both refreshing & also fascinating,& the way this element of religiosity(/ agnosticism in the case of jk) has been incorporated into the story def just added to the reading experience & made things way more interesting!

-i absolutely love how much detail & thought went into creating well crafted & attained to relationships outside the sphere of the characters who’ll be involved romantically w/ the protagonist. u gave so much importance also to other characters u created to portray diff relationships of family,friendship or simple encounters(gerry/the hairdresser etc) w/ the protagonist, building a wrld outside just the circle of future romance interest,which gives the protagonist so much more characterisation & realism. it made the story so incredibly immersive & realistic,regardless of the supernatural or not😆

-another thing that struck me,is the depiction of the hybrids as a marginalised group & the protagonist clashing w/ the difference in their privileges & realities. i remember she seemed almost unaware at certain points of the true extent of the cruelty & discrimination hybrids usually face,which makes sense considering she canonically has never been close to hybrids or their reality as much throughout her live(beside the lil fox frnd in her childhood) so it makes 4 a great starting point into her journey of learning,change,unlearning & coming to terms w/ the fact that if the boys have some moments of distrust,venting etc it isn’t necessarily bc of her but bc of what they went through & what they know & have lived on their skin & it is an experience that has left a trace in their brain 4ever & has impacted them & it may slip & show in their reactions or behavior w/ y/n(namjoon’s cold-hot treatment, jk’s animosity,distrust & need 4 distance, seokjin’s anxiety at the cookout,hobi’s alertness when she woke him up). we still don’t know the details,but it’s obvious that their past has traumatized them & shaped some parts of them & in your exquisite writing,that part of them isn’t smth that just unrealistically & magically disappears simply bc now they are in a healthier,safer,happier environment w/ the mc. mc’s efforts are mitigating the trauma responses & slowly setting the bridge toward the journey to start healing from their past(way later into the story,i assume) but she didn’t just “cure” everything already just w/ kindness & care,it’s a journey that just begun that we are still seeing unfold & shift according to the direction of the story & also to every individual hybrid,which makes it more realistic & captivating to read

smth i’m super excited 4(beside ch 7 & tae’s situation that u left us in w/ a cliffhanger) is how u’r gonna develop the relationships between the hybrids & mc once they all start to develop feelings,accept them & start acting according to their feelings. i’m not only curious abt when & how it’s gonna happen 4 each character individually but also how this will change & shift the dynamic the hybrids are going to have w/ e/o at that point.

u also mentioned they all gonna be doms,so since you mentioned it i’m so intrigued abt what type of dom you’r going to make each character be & how they’ll start interacting w/ mc & e/o after their dynamics change according to their feelings

I'm also very glad that you like the pagan and supernatural aspects of the plot and characters! It is a big part of MC, her mother, and for now-- Jeongguk and Namjoon's characters. Overall, the plot will continue to build upon the more occult and supernatural/paranormal themes, and more of the hybrids will become involved in various ways, so I'm stoked that readers are enjoying those aspects of the plot! It has been important to me to find the right balance between the religious/supernatural themes and the hybrid!AU, and to be honest, with every chapter I write it is still a balancing act. I am hoping to do these themes justice, and represent some pagan practices and holidays through Trouvaille in the best way I can based off of my own practices. I'm thrilled that you're enjoying the magic so far!

As for some of the side characters you've mentioned (!!!) I'm also super excited you've brought them up. I agree with you, it is important for MC to have relationships outside of the ones she has with the hybrids. She had a fully fleshed out life prior to meeting them at Gerry's shelter, so making sure that MC had plenty of friends, co-workers, family, and interactions with people such as Gerry or the hairdresser you mentioned was a priority to me. Some of my favorite interactions in Trouvaille so far happen between MC and her childhood best friend, Ben. Her friends will play more important roles down the line as the story progresses, specifically the twin sisters she is close to, Laura and Alice. I'm happy that these other characters have made MC seem all the more realistic, and that you've mentioned the side characters as well-- I had a lot of fun creating them! 🥰

SO you bring up an excellent point surrounding the hybrids themselves, and the relationship MC has with the species of hybrids in general. Nobody is perfect, least of all MC, and that's exactly how I wanted to write her. She can be naive, a little sheltered, overly trusting, and even somewhat oblivious at times. That said, I agree with you; she is definitely unaware of just how much hybrids, and her hybrids in particular, have suffered in the past. She knows that they've all suffered through traumatic experiences, but she doesn't know the details. MC is also blissfully unaware of just how much hybrids in her society are treated and even how they behave-- not because of willful ignorance, but simply because she never considered that she'd have a hybrid in her life, let alone seven. Sure, she's aware of the headlines surrounding hybrid trafficking, the wealthy adopting hybrids for sport hunting, but there is lots about the hybrid world she has yet to learn about. You're right, a major part of Trouvaille will be MC learning about hybrids as a species and truly understanding what it is like for them to move through the society Trouvaille takes place in.

I like that you've brought up specifically some of the boy's behaviors so far. Namjoon's hot and cold behavior is a big one, as well as Jeongguk's prickly, distrustful personality. Seokjin, notably, has a huge backstory that I've yet to dive into, but he has a lot of unresolved trauma/PTSD as well that surfaces as anxiety, jittery behavior, and phobias. As for Hoseok, there is no telling what he had gone through at shelters to react so defensively when woken up, as he had been moved around shelter to shelter- these are all things I'm super excited you have picked up on and remembered. Each hybrid has things to work on and through, but as you mentioned, these issues will not be solved simply because MC adopted them. Sure, a safe place to live and her kindness is a start, but there will be a long process of healing for each of the hybrids. Healing is never linear and the same goes for the hybrids in this story; it will get messy and angsty, but over time they will make great progress, I'm sure. One great trait MC has is patience, so she'll definitely make space for each hybrid to heal and open up to her in their own time. I'm excited to share all of these backstories with you all, as well!!

As for the romance! We are definitely a ways away from it, but hopefully readers can sense the slooooowww build to it with certain hybrids already. There is a lot to tackle before romance becomes involved (most of the reasons as to why in the previous two paragraphs) but the wait will totally be worth it! I have ideas for each hybrid and how they will realize their feelings (all different and unique to each boy), when their confessions will happen; the whole timeline for that is planned out, including the order of when each hybrid gets with the MC. I'm still working on how the hybrids will react to one another once romance is involved, its one of the things that has been more difficult to flesh out in my outlines over the past year. Not to worry- as there is much time to go before that happens LOL!

Sooo because romance is a bit far away, so is the smut. I have mentioned that I've written my Trouvaille hybrids as doms. I think, when answering this question in the past, I might have sparked a little trepidation in some readers. Because these are my characters I've been working on for over a year, this decision has made the most sense to me for several reasons that I've answered in previous asks. I also mentioned that there would be a great variety as far as how they'd all act in the bedroom, as unique as the characters themselves are, how their feelings during confessions would be, so too will they all be unique when the time comes for smut. Now, when I say they'll all be dominant, I do not mean they'll be 50 Shades of Grey type dominants. This isn't a BDSM fic. Sure, some of them will be rougher than others, but there are also the sweeter, more vanilla doms as well. Like I said, this is off in the future, so when the time comes, I'll appropriately label chapters with smut contained within them. This all boils down to how I've written these characters, including MC, as well as staying within my wheelhouse when it comes to writing sex scenes.

1. Lara Croft - Tomb Raider Okay, let’s just get it out: I prefer reboot!Lara. idk I know some people think she sucks and the games suck for whatever reason, but I found the games and their mechanics super fun, and Lara’s story really compelling. She was a young girl who was determined to make her own way in the world, and instead went through something extremely traumatizing. She kept pushing through, kept getting back up no matter what the world threw at her. She went on this clear journey that was compelling and fun and messy. She wasn’t perfect. She pushed people away, she fucked the world up because she was determined to find the answers she felt would make all she went through make sense. Her survivor’s guilt was present really well in RotTR but most especially in SotTR. People were dying but she was so focused on finishing her personal mission. She was numb to it despite the fact it still horrified her. And her arc ended well. She finally was able to reach a place where she was able to let go of her losses and try to join society again. And I’m gay for her. So, you know.

2. Senua - Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice I cannot recommend this game enough. It’s tough to play bc it’s not just a horror game but you feel a lot of Senua’s anxiety, which is part of the point to the game. Senua’s a Celtic warrior who suffers from psychosis, and the game devs worked directly with both professionals and those who experience psychosis. There’s a whole mini doc to it which is great, even if you can’t stomach horror. You’re in Senua’s head with her throughout the game. You see what she sees, you hear all she hears, and she talks to you directly at times. But the beauty of the game is Senua’s true journey. She goes on a quest to try to rescue a loved one she lost to Vikings, but the real story is about a girl realizing she’s not a monster for seeing the world differently. That the abuse and ableism she faced weren’t her fault at all. There’s so many little things I can point to in this game that just made me so emotional, and it’s such a beautiful and necessary story to tell. Senua is great and deserves a hug.

3. Anakin Skywalker - Star Wars If you asked me at what point in my life Anakin became one of my favourite characters, to the point I frequently talked about him even on my main blog at random intervals, I couldn’t tell you. I haven’t the faintest idea; he just was. And if you asked me why he was a fave early on, I also couldn’t tell you lmao. It might partially be that I grew up on the prequels, and maybe at such a young age I didn’t really grasp at first that this was a story about a guy who was already revealed to be a villain, but I haven’t the faintest clue. He just is now, and I’m so passionate about his story. He’s complex and difficult and written so well. You want him to be happy, you feel heartbroken seeing a good character fall so deep, and you want to smack him upside the head a whole lot. You laugh at his silly dialogue (which he has as Vader too smh), you cry when you see him struggling, you become horrified by his actions. His story’s also a great inversion of the Chosen One trope - whereas usually we see Chosen Ones struggle, become imperfect and undoubtedly traumatized, they remain heroes the whole time. Anakin doesn’t. He becomes the bad guy, one of the worst in the series (Palps takes the award tho). But even then, when you think this guy has nothing to offer but an intimidating villain, he’s shown to have good. And then we see how much good he had all along, the good he forgot and was punished for and hated himself for. His heart that had good intentions but he chose the worst actions. He’s complicated and I love him. And more over, I love how many people who struggle or have mental illness can relate to him. I love that he wasn’t treated as a guy whose actions were glorified, but that were honest in both the good ones and the bad ones. Anyone can fall, and anyone can get back up, if they choose to. I just. Love him. He means a lot.

4. Commander Shepard - Mass Effect I know that Shep is technically the player’s character and can be any combination of person, but anyone who’s played Mass Effect would get why they were put here. The original trilogy for Mass Effect touched on so many things, and was a really emotional one. You had your great moments with friends, you had your struggles against both unknown horrors, and horrors close to home (so to speak). There are so many small moments that stick out to you, and idk how many people can say that playing this story didn’t impact their life in a meaningful way, bc I can’t see how it couldn’t. I’ve played the games many times, but even after all of this, there are moments that I not just still get emotional to, but take on new meaning as I go through my life. And Shepard’s the hero of the story. They’re not perfect, and they can downright be an ass if you play them that way, but their story is one of perseverance, of fighting on even when entire worlds are being lost and everyone is still looking to them. Everyone needs them to find a solution. But even then, it’s a story about friendship too. About tons of amazing characters that all have their own motivations, their own pasts and goals and hopes and failures. About how all these varied characters become a found family. And so Shepard’s the hero of the story, but their companions aren’t just there to be sidekicks, but end up with all their own accomplishments and arcs and you go on this journey with all of them. idk the whole series is great dsalkkljads

5. Lexa & Clarke - The 100 Let’s not talk about how terrible this show got and how messy it was because we all know. But it started with a really compelling story that was interesting, and to see two characters on screen who were flawed but understood each other, and to have them both be women - one who was a lesbian and one who was a bisexual?? It made me so excited and it’s a really flawed show but it meant a lot to me at the time to have a couple like that on a tv show, and so despite all its flaws, that relationship still means a lot to me. 

6. The BAU team - Criminal Minds Yeah, I put the entire friggin team down, and that means all of them. There was only maybe two or so characters that were on it I didn’t like so every iteration is put down. Criminal Minds isn’t exactly a complex show; it’s a typical crime drama, and its unique feature is that it looks into the behaviour and minds of criminals instead of finding the science, like we saw with CSI. But the episodes were compelling and entertaining to watch, and, what do you know, there’s a found family at the center of it all and naturally I’m a sucker for it. Strangely enough this show is kind of a comfort one to me, bc it’s entertaining but not always overwhelmingly emotional. I can put it on at any time and just have it on in the background, or when I’m not feeling well, and I’ll enjoy myself. Also strangely enough, I’ve seen almost every episode enough times that there’s a game in my house to see how long it takes for me to recognize the episode and its plot once a rerun is put on lmao. There’s a lot of good shows like this out there - I enjoy SVU a lot too - but something just draws me to the characters on this one. We’ve been with them for, what, 14 seasons?? And we’ve seen them go thru some shit, we’ve seen them grow and change and they’re all really unique. It’s not a complex show but it is good enough to just binge. A part that plays in it is probably the time in my life I started getting into it too, but I’m alright with standing by it.

7. Korra - Avatar: The Legend of Korra I probably don’t need to wax poetic about atla or atlok much at all. I just love her journey, as a brash and overconfident girl who realizes that being the Avatar is hard, the people expect so much and there’s a lot put on your shoulders. That, when things go wrong, people will blame you. She went and became this giant blue monster thing, but her struggles were all human. Her PTSD was shown really well, despite it being a kid’s show. She’s fun and her journey is lovely and it’s definitely true that Korrasami did it way better, and both characters are bi women too (◡‿◡✿) We Do Not Talk About That Dumb Love Triangle Nonsense Though

8. Chloe & Max - Life is Strange What can I even say about this game? I don’t know. If you’ve played it, you’ll know why it’s here. It’s.... way deeper than you’d think it’d get at first. I love the story, and I love the journey Max and Chloe go on together. I love their friendship, how Chloe was always trying to uplift Max and encourage her to follow her dreams, and Max just doing the impossible for Chloe. I love their relationship, because it was built on support and love and struggle. I love their complexities, their flaws, their strengths, their times together. I just fskljdjlksfd love them, I love this game and all its various stories and character arcs. It’s all so beautiful and raw and unique and yay, another pair of ladies loving each other is on this list.

9. Solas - Dragon Age: Inquisition Okay. There’s a TON of characters I adore in Dragon Age, and to be honest, I don’t know he’d be my absolute top one. But I do like his story. I love Dragon Age companions, because, like in Mass Effect, they’re all their own characters with their own stories and journeys. Solas is flawed. Like, really flawed. Here’s another guy on my list who went and fucked up the world a bit. His worst actions (and the consequences of them) were built on good intentions, on his desire to help his people. We can get into the way this direction BW went with the elvhen religion was icky, but it’s a different conversation. I adore elvhen lore and I love exploring theories on it all the time. For Solas, I just like that he’s complex. I mean, he’s still silly and kinda weird, and he loves to hear himself speak on topics and loves Lavellan for encouraging him to never shut up, but most of all I kind of like their relationship? A friendship with Solas is still great, but I like that it’s an asexual one (don’t fight me on this, idc, it’s how I see it). It’s soft, built on mutual respect, one with no pressures or expectations. Solas asks for time and Lavellan gives it. There’s no fade to black s.ex scenes that so many times aren’t optional in BW games. I just really like my asexual wolf god egg ok

10. Mulder & Scully - The X Files Okay, it’s super hard to choose characters for this holy heck. BUT I really, really, really love their relationship. Mulder is an idealist who believes in the supernatural, and Scully his pragmatic scientific counterpart. And we could talk about how Scully’s character as a woman in science meant to a lot of people, and how Mulder’s tenacity to not give up on his beliefs is a nice one (when it’s not getting him into trouble). Their relationship is the slowest of slow burns in television history, I think. But it’s good that way. Scully starts out thinking Mulder’s just a delusional guy, one who’s intelligent but wastes his accomplishments, and he knows that. Then they go through shit, they’re a team and many times it’s them against a whole bunch of unbelievable stuff (and their own government). What I loved most was also their son, and I’m literally deleting all knowledge of the new seasons from my brain bc I think it was gross and took away from the story, but I liked that they were so close, loved each other so much despite there not really being a romance yet, that Scully trusted to go to Mulder to donate to her bc he was the only one she could think of for this. It’s another asexual relationship on screen, and it’s built on a love that happens over time. I just fljksdfkjl could go on about it too.

This was hard lmao. I wanna give an honorary shout out to Peggy Carter since she had wonderful lines like: “I know my value. Anyone else’s opinion doesn’t really matter.” Which is *chef’s kiss*. Peggy was the true unsung hero of the MCU and they gave her and Steve a weird ass ending.

I have a question about your experience in the church if that's okay. Do you feel like it's possible for Christians to be supportive of you and love you whilst also thinking homosexuality is sinful? I'm sorry bc I'm not sure if this is a stupid question but I hope it makes sense. Do you feel like the doctrine breeds hostility and homophobia in every Christian even though the message of Jesus was actually to love indiscriminately? -Not a stupid question atALL. It’s one I have to ask myself very often, honestly, since most of myfamily and two of my closest friends are somewhere on the “it’s wrong to havehomosexual intercourse” spectrum. For instance, by Aunt thinks it’s morally wrongand two men dating is yucky. My uncle thinks it’s wrong to the extent I’mkiiiiind of afraid he would violently hurt me if he saw me with another man.Meanwhile, my best friends, last we talked about the issue, said “it’s possiblethat’s what the Bible means, but we aren’t sure….”

Honestly….I think the answer to your question is complex

On one hand, I know manygay people feel that unless you cannot love them while believing homosexual “expression”is morally wrong. Or even that there is some difference in the moral goodness ofsame-sex couples versus opposite-couples. And on some level, I am one of these people

Every gay person who livesin connection with organized religion has a complex relationship betweenthemselves, their loved ones, and this issue. And honestly, I feel out of placecalling any of their convictions on this question wrong. I know that’s a littletoo far on the “well everything is subjective” side of rhetoric, but Isimply can’t….argue with a gay man or lesbian when they say that refusing tosee homosexuality as morally neutral means refusing to love them

So I’ll only answer for myself

And it’s complicated

On one hand, I think theanswer is easy

If I met a new friend and foundout they believed homosexuality was immoral, I would drop them. Full stop. I don’twant that in my life anymore. I don’t want those kinds of people in my life anymore.I would say that these people, no matter what they claim, do not love me. Youcannot exist in our world, in our homophobic reality, and still hold those beliefswithout sacrificing genuine love for me

But then it gets messy

My dad, when I first cameout, had no qualms in treating me the same way. Honestly, we had a betterrelationship because I wasn’t hiding my self-loathing anymore and could get professionalhelp for my mental illness. However, this peace was partially influenced by thefact that I came out with the caveat that I still saw homosexuality as sinfuland would never “act on it” by way of dating, relationships, marriage, orsex. My dad held the opinion, and even said it out loud, that “whatmatters most is that you know I love you and you know what’s right.”

This would make thingstricky when shit hit the fan and I came out AGAIN, this time saying that I’mgay AND I’m not going cut love out of my life anymore. Suddenly my dad has towrestle with his two major concerns: that I know he loves me and that I know “what’sright” (in this case that homosexuality is wrong and I cannot follow God completelywhile believing and acting otherwise). Which is going to win out?

My dad, in a very incharacter moment, just…didn’t talk about it

I remember overhearing himtalk with my mom and say “I just can’t talk about this, I’m not going totalk about this” when she tried to ask what he felt about my announcement. Thiswent on for several months. Luckily I was away at college so there wasn’t a lotof tension. I knew something like this would happen. I had braced myself

But then….he slowlychanged. Even before he reached the point of accepting my sexuality asperfectly healthy and normal (which is where I think he is now, he’s hard to read),he started to talk about things. He told me that he would be at my wedding, nomatter what. He listened to me when I talked about unhealthy relationships andtheir effect on me. Even though he, internally, held a certain belief, hisexternal actions were…supportive and, dare I say, loving (?)

So it becomes a complexquestion

If love is an action, notjust an emotion, was my father loving me despite not supporting thathomosexuality can be morally expressed?

Honestly…I don’t know

Maybe I’m just thankfulthat he did what he did. Maybe I’ve set the bar very low. In some ways, I thinkI have. However, at the same time….I question wonder….if someone believesthat you are doing something wrong but genuinely treats you no differently thananyone else, or actively takes actions of love, where does that leave you?

Two of my best friendsdon’t know where to land on the homosexuality issue. Quote: “it feels likeboth sides have good theological arguments.” However, at the end of the day,they still treat me like all their other friends. They ask me about my datinglife, they encourage me to find someone, they support me when I get my heartbroken

So again, it becomes aquestion, where does the importance lie: in the beliefs, or the embodiedactions? Both? Neither?

I don’t think you can lovethe sinner and hate the sin when hating the sin means treating people as lesseror different. Hate and love are actions

But can you ideologically condemn the “sin” and still take actionsof love? And if you do…are those actions still love? And if they are, are YOU aloving person despite your beliefs?

When it comes to the people like my father and friends…I end upunable to answer…

Short answer, yes, absolutely.

There’s a reason why I don’t sayflatly that you can see homosexuality as sinful and still love gay people. Thepeople who I think get closest are literally the most influential people in mylife who I may honestly just be giving a break

The problem that comes with saying “Jesusloved everyone so why do Christians not love gay people” is that Jesus DOESN’Ttell you to accept every part of the people you love. Jesus calls you to loveyour neighbor but still see their wrongful actions as wrong. So when you alsobelieve that homosexuality is wrong, you believe that LOVING gay people meansNOT ACCEPTING that their love is ever good

If the belief that homosexuality is(in any way) morally lesser than heterosexuality (I would agree with thisstatement) then yes, the current sexuality doctrine of mainstream evangelicalisminherently breeds and generates homophobia.

And I believe that in most cases, thisleads naturally to hostility as these people fail to actually interact with andmaintain any relationships with real gay people. You get a large socialcommunity which views something as morally reprehensible, and then fails tointeract in any way with those same people they judge, and also has a doctrineof working to change the world and make it more of “The Kingdom of God on earth”,and you have a storm brewing

I simply cannot look at the instrumentalways that evangelical Christianity has helped form, maintain, and strengthenthe institutional homophobia in my country without coming to the conclusionthat “condemning homosexuality” at a religious, doctrinal level will not INEVITABLYand UNAVOIDABLY create real-world damage against gay men and lesbians

Writing (Wasteland & Sky): Action, movement itself, is essential to a pulp tale. The story must get in, get out, and say everything it can in as few words as possible. Because pulp writers had to hook the audience quickly they had to pack as much as they could into magazine guidelines. Even though they paid by the word, if a writer didn’t cut the flab editors would just print another story in its place. Sharpness is essential; sluggishness is death.

Fiction (Pulprev): ‘Dark’ is an oft-seen descriptor for books, comics, movies, games and television shows these days. These media are usually packed with violence, swearing, sex scenes and the like. But does that really make a story dark? As I made my way through old runs of the Punisher — specifically the MAX runs, the runs filled to the max with violence and gore and obscenities and random sex — I must say that the answer is no.

Comic Book Business (Walker’s Retreat): Diamond, the distributor with a monopoly on American comics distribution (and handling boardgame and tabletop RPG, etc. stuff also), has ceased taken product. This includes DC and Marvel. The American comic shop scene, already on fire, just had gasoline poured on it.  I cannot care less. The collapse being spoken of in the above video is a part of the larger collapse of the Western entertainment business, which is a rotten zombie corpse now experience a failure cascade as its putrescence reaches critical mass and body parts start falling off.

Fictional Characters (Running Iron Report): Tannhauser is the protagonist of two magnificent novels by Tim Willocks: The Religion and The Twelve Children of Paris. Appendix N (Swords and Stitchery):  Robert E.Howard’s Kull stories are as important if not more so then his Conan tales. The fact is that Kull goes from slave to king speaks volumes about the progression & dangers of the world of pre-cataclysmic Atlantis c. 100,000 BC. Why do I love the series?! Because Kull’s fate is completely uncertain. We never learn what happens to him. He’s swallowed up by Robert E. Howard’s literature output. The same thing happened with THE DARK IS RISING. Why remains a mystery to this day. After I got my first computer (a Tandy 1000 EX) and the game BLACK CAULDRON, I realized that the villain on the cover of this fantasy book was the same Horned King as in BLACK CAULDRON.

SFWA (delarroz.com): It’s come to my attention that the group of pedophile supporters formerly a science fiction professional organization is having an election for their board. Comic Books (The Pitch KC): Roy Thomas currently edits a comics history magazine called Alter Ego. It’s a subject the 79-year-old Show Me State native knows well because he helped make it. And he’s still at it. Thomas served as Marvel editor-in-chief, but he also helped create and develop Wolverine (Adamantium, the metal in his skeleton is Thomas’ idea), Vision, Luke Cage, Ultron and other characters. Monsters (Dark Worlds Quarterly): Jack Williamson wrote The Legion of Space for F. Orlin Tremaine’s Astounding Stories, April-August 1934. In that novel a group of brave Earthmen face off against a cruel race of aliens called the Medusae. These creatures are hideous to look upon: “John Star had glimpsed one of the Medusae on Mars, that thing in the gondola swung from the black flier, whose weapon had struck him down. A swollen, greenish surface, wetly heaving; a huge, ovoid eye, luminous and purple. But these were the first he had fully seen.

RPG (Akratic Wizardry): Some dramatic news out of Cubicle 7:  We have some very unfortunate and unexpected news to share. Hard-Boiled Fiction (Howard Andrew Jones): Writing as a team, usually under their Wade Miller pseudonym, Bob Wade and Bill Miller drafted some engaging thrillers and mysteries for Fawcett Gold Medal and other publishers all through the 1950s and into the early 1960s, before Miller’s untimely early death. Their writing was tight and spare, yet immersive, and they knew how to quickly hook readers into propulsive plots. Their settings sprang vividly to life, and they were capable of subtle and even nuanced character development and dialogue.

Cinema (Jon Mollison): Panfilov’s 28 on the other hand provides everything a guy could want in a war film.  A plucky band of brothers serve as the last line of defense standing between the German mechanized juggernaut and Moscow herself.  I can’t recall a single actress in the entire film, which revolves around how men bond and fight as much for the man next to themselves in the trench, and how they reconcile themselves to death as a hopeless gesture of defiance.

Insecure, but confident enough to establish his part in this world as a hardworking father. He wouldn’t call himself bright, but he’d tell you that he tries – even if it might not always be enough. He’s a man constantly learning from past mistakes and someone ready to fight for a better future.
