I don't understand people who are so ardently against social systems. Like, it's pulling eye-teeth just to have what little we do. I can't tell you how many f*cking time some MAGA cultist attacks food stamps or welfare like it's the worst thing ever but it's like, the ones who abuse it like you say, look like you. They don't look like me. There's always bad actors in any system, but if the majority carries on the way they should, then that system should function regardless. We know it can because it's being executed in real time, all over the world. There's a reason why the happiest places on earth, have the most expansive social welfare systems. Its fine to drive capitalism, no one's telling you not to work hard, but if we expanded those processes, everyone benefits. If everyone contributes a little more to the pool, all of our boats rise with the tide. I mean, seriously, if 2020 has taught us anything, it's that the systems we have in pace right now, don't work. They are easily exploited, easily manipulated, and completely counter intuitive to living life. There is a literal f*cking plague going on and our president is forcing people back to work and kids back to class because the economy. If that don't scream broke and needs fixing, I don't what does.

Free Healthcare means no worries going to the doctor. Paper cut, baby delivery, broken bone, or f*cking cancer, there'd be no stressing over how to pay those ridiculous bills. They wouldn't be ridiculous. I think in Canada an ambulance ride is, like, $230 dollars, average, depending on circumstances. In some places, it's as low as $45 and others, as high as $385. The average here in the States is closer to $1200 f*cking dollars. For just the ambulance. That's not even beginning to address the hospital visit and hope you don't an extended stay. These mother*ckers gave me a bill for close to $50,000 for my two week stay the first time I almost died. Bro, there's no way I am ever going to pay that. The f*ck is you saying? I read an account of someone going to the emergency room in the Philippines and it cost her $15 dollars. To see the doctor. It would have been free but she's not a citizen. More than anything, universal healthcare would force Big Pharma to price their medications appropriately. There would have affordable prescriptions for everyone. When I left my job, I lot my insurance. When I checked prices on my meds, just a single prescription was $400 f*cking dollars for one month's worth. In Canada, that prescription would have been $15. The ill thing? The $400 dollar one was the cheapest I could find stateside. I take five medications for my heart. Uninsured, I'd be dropping close to $3800 a month, on sh*t I need to live. Who the f*ck has a loose $3800 when they have to pay that much in rent every month? Insulin is, like, $300 for 10 days worth here. In Canada, it's f*cking $30. Sh*t's even cheaper in Egypt. Small businesses wouldn't have to worry about employee healthcare or anything like that. If you have more than two employees, the cost you save in insurance coverage is more than enough to offset that tax increase. You'd be able to actually pay a more livable wage, while pocketing more profit at the same time. How is any of this bad? How can you spin this sh*t as a negative?

Free education means a more literate populace. We wouldn't have near as many Anti-Vaxxers and Flat Earthers. Motherf*ckers would understand the science of social distancing and mask wearing during a goddamn pandemic. I wouldn't be so f*cking mad having to dumb myself down just to interact with society. If we follow the Nordic system, you get your four years worth of education, graduate with a proper degree, and get placed into a position immediately out of college to tenure in your focus for the next four years. It's not an internship but a real job. You not only get a degree, but you immediately start earning a living in that field, while accumulating experience. Once you complete your four year employment obligation, you can continue your employment, start the process over with a new major in mind, or you're free to travel abroad with four years experience and a BA in your pocket. Not only would the populace be more literate, more people would be employed thus stimulating the economy. Those that enter into science and engineering, would have to innovate in their fields for four years, minimum, so you'd have hungry minds creating the future, just like back in the day when “America was great” or whatever. More education, means more jobs, means a stronger economy, means less crime. Again, how is this a bad thing? You wouldn't even have to do away with private college or studying whatever you want. If there wasn't a free program to take advantage of, just pay for your classes. I'm sure there'd still be grants and scholarship and financial aid available for aspiring painters or wannabe film makers, or any number of vanity degrees. F*ck it, man, if you want to go to Harvard just for the clout, you can still totally do that. F*ck, dude, you can do it after getting your free degree even. Graduate school, bro. Motherf*cker can be making six figures paying that stupid, clout chasing, tuition out of pocket because you can afford it with the job you got with that free degree. That's the beauty of the Nordic system; Everyone gets what they want.

That's just the surface of these benefits. I'm not even going to go into what universal income, maternity leave, vacation time, strong unions, and subsidized child care. I'm not even going to touch on how prisons over there are built to rehabilitate, not to humiliate and effectively enslave. For Profit prisons are the modern plantations. Look that sh*t up. I'm not even going to go into detail about the benefits collective legalization for all drugs and how crime plummeted because of it, or how they treat addiction like a mental illness and not a criminal offense, or the way they house their homeless and treat them humanely, while transitioning them into society with counseling, job placement, and social work. All of this, for, maybe, an extra hundred or two a year. That's, what? An extra $30 a month out of your check? Less than $10 a f*cking week? That one trip to Starbucks. That's two Quarter-Pounders. That's nothing. How does that math not work? How do these universal benefits, not jive with everyone? How does this sh*t not make sense to people, when you can see it working the world over? The illest thing in this whole situations is the fact that we, as the US, have absolutely more than enough to implement this system, this type of social democracy which benefits everyone, if we just rearranged our budget. Admittedly, we couldn't just implement the healthcare out the box. I mean, we could, but that would entail getting motherf*ckers who make trillions, like Amazon, Facebook, and Tesla as well as Zuckerberg, Musk, and Bezos, to pay their fair share without circumventing said responsibilities Corporate Welfare is crippling the working American and people are too dumb to even pay attention to it, distracted by buzzwords like “communism” and “immigrant.” So we do the free education thing first. That's only $4 billion a year. I checked. That's pittance compared to the defense budget.

Motherf*ckers wouldn't even need to “tax the rich” or “hold them accountable” if we just cut the defense budget. We can keep pretending that trickle down works and that Wall Street works for us and not corporate gluttons and that Reaganomics works, and whatever else the conservatives want us all to believe. Whatever, right? The US spends $650 billion on defense. That is, quite literally, $400 billion more than the next country, China. The rest of the world, minus the US and China, spends a collective $831 billion. That's an average of less than $50 billion a year, worldwide. F*ck, if you add China back into that, it's still less than $65 billion a year. Did i mention that these are yearly budgets? And these are old numbers. My guy, we can afford to drop a few billion of that defense budget. We can probably skim $50 billion and enrich a lot of people's lives but we don't even need that much. Drop $4 billion off of that gratuitous $650 tril, and you can fund free education for everyone. Following the Nordic system, that means more jobs. That means more taxes. That means a better economy and more revenue to implement the universal health care, which would further lessen the burden of employers and employees, putting even more money back into everyone's pockets, which would grow the economy even more. Happy and secure people, spend more money. The only people this system hurts, are those hurting us with the current system. Are they literally too dumb and/or selfish to let go of a little extra and uplift all of us? How do you argue that math? No one loses but the people forcing you to lose right now, in real time. F*ck, man, 2020 has exposed this entire system and there are still people who will die for a country that won't even give you enough money to be safe during a whole ass plague and I don't understand that at all.

I feel truly sad, in a selfish way, for the first time in a long time

it’s really sinking in that there’s no time left and there is really no way to escape the way that this life turned out

and it fucking sucks

I wanted so much more, and I felt so much and I can’t believe I ended up blowing every chance to move forward

I blew it 10 years ago, and now I will turn 26 and have to keep telling my mom that there’s a way to figure it out

everyone is pretending something will spontaneously occur, but I did what I could, and the government is gonna take 4-6months to deny disability before I can even start an appeal

and if you stop going to the doctor and taking medication, it disqualifies you

to go to the dr every month without insurance would be $400 plus clinic copays and then meds etc so $600/month for insurance is worth it but I can’t do it, my family can’t do it

I’m really really fucked

and it doesn’t matter that I’m trying, that I’m being brave and learning to drive despite my ankle not working 100%

there is no solution, because if I leave this place so I can get a job (that doesn’t require standing 8hrs etc), I’ll have to pay rent etc so I still wouldn’t be able to pay a doctor for the meds I need to function

I don’t want to go back to having migraines twice a week, I’d lose any job anyway

you gotta work to get medicine but I need medicine to work

I live in a place where I can’t get anywhere without driving but I can’t afford to move to a city, even if I have 4 roommates

and fucking America, right, you can’t even find a bench to sleep on!! you can’t even be on the street!!! they make cement spikes now

if I die and live this life over, that would be the most cruel thing I can think of

I have suffered so much, and the happiness I found was so short lived, that it was almost worse to have known

that I could find a place to have value and contribute to society and also survive

because it shouldn’t be impossible, it can’t be impossible for someone...like me? I can do many things very well; I am not useless

but at the bottom rung, in the middle of nowhere, it only matters if you can walk fast and stand for long shifts

there’s not even a fucking bookstore

I know the woe is me thing is pretty self-indulgent, and I should be grateful for the good stuff I’ve had

at this point I can be happy for the sunrise, for a roof

but not health or happiness, family or love, a future or even the dream of a future

I ran away before and I walked one block before I was on the highway to the mountains with fucking nothing

there isn’t even a psychiatric unit at the hospital anymore, there is literally no place to go

no one lives here, so there aren’t homeless shelters

there’s not even a fucking bus

even if I could drive, I’d have to steal a car to get out of here

even the homeless people with the shittiest lives in most cities, I mean at least there’s something to do? even if I was willing to do anything to survive, like sell drugs, there isn’t enough business! walking the street would just mean see a bunch of deer

Nick mentioned wanting to move in together maybe two or three weeks ago, and brought it up again last night. I nearly live with him as it is. I see him on most of his days off (Monday, Thursday, and every other weekend). I have since we started dating, with the exception of the week I was in NY for my little sister’s birthday and last Thursday with that stupid snow storm. I sleep over most Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays, so that’s more than half the week. About 57% of the time, I am sleeping at his place.

I did some research about it and apparently most couples move in together 6 months to a year into relationships. Nick suggested May because that’s when his current lease expires. I’m kind of shocked in some ways. He really wants to live with me? With my ex, he would get upset when I cleaned (which he always should have done before I came to visit. He didn’t always do that.) But Nick is completely unbothered by my need to disinfect things and keep space about. He will clean up if I ask him to. I think really if he just keeps trash and recycling in the bins and his clothes in the hamper, I would be very comfortable living with him. He typically stays in one place as it is, so his messes are a lot more concentrated.

I’m more worried about him killing himself working double shifts to afford a place while I am not able to contribute financially. My certification program begins in February, so I should have an idea by the end of the first full week how hard or easy it is going to be. I have a good feeling I will be able to handle it. I handled grad school, and that was still pretty difficult, so I think I can survive a certification program with just the right amount of stress.

I love Nick SO much. I simply can’t get over it. He has been so good to me these past three months. I think we would live well together without any serious issues. He seems to like being a provider and financially supportive, but I definitely still worry about him dealing with that because I don’t want him to ever feel like he’s being taken advantage of or grow resentful, or anything like that. I’ve mentioned this to him many times before, especially the other night when I was complaining about the stupid $12 monthly maintenance fee I’m getting with Bank of America (I believe if you have less than $2,500, they start charging you. I think that is extreme fuckery). I was asking him what bank he uses (DCU) because I want to switch to avoid that. He told me he wanted to lend me money—$500—but I said I wasn’t comfortable with that. I still appreciate that he WANTED to lend me that much money. That’s a huge deal when it comes to trust and care in a relationship. I don’t like to owe anyone money, to be honest. I don’t want something like that to interfere with how good we are together, so I politely declined.

I honestly think we could move in together today and nothing would go seriously wrong. But I also don’t want to jump the gun. It might be different because it’s the responsibility of an entire apartment (well, with a landlord to take care of some things, I guess) without roommates and I wonder how that might be for him when I am not there because I’m still going to want to spend time at home with my mom and my twin.

Nick and his roommates hardly interact as it is, but I do worry about him being alone a lot. Like, really alone and no one home. He does have bipolar disorder, which he seems to have under control as he is on meds, but the other week, he told me that he had been having thoughts about self-harm while he was driving. I don’t want him to be totally alone if I want to go home for the week or something and I’m not there. He doesn’t make that much of an effort since COVID to have social interactions outside of a romantic relationship (some of which he expressed is because of COVID. He doesn’t go to his improv group or do comedy shows as much because of safety for the pandemic). He has an older brother who he isn’t very close to. He has work acquaintances/”friends” but when I asked, he said he doesn’t hang out with them outside of work.

But I love him so, so very much and I like the idea of us having a lot more privacy and our own space. The other night, I thought it was him knocking on the bathroom door, but it turns out it was one of his roommates saying I was being very loud in the shower. I felt horribly about that and I don’t want to be in the way of other people. That’s part of why I think us having our own place would be really good.

He was a bit pissed off that his net pay was $2,724 when he made gross pay of $4,000 this past week. He said right now he has $17,000 in savings, minus $875 for rent and $800 for car insurance. I would not be happy if he started tapping into his savings just to pay rent. He texted me past 3AM and said, “I think $400 a month difference is worth it Because being able to come home to you every day would be priceless for me”

Ultimately, I want Nick to be able to comfortably handle paying $1,200-1,300 a month for a single apartment without him murdering himself working more than 40 hours a week. His current rent is $875 a month, with I think 3 roommates (but one moved out since my previous visit last week). I wouldn’t feel good about that. I like for him to be able to sleep and rest like a normal person. But he does deliberately choose overnight shifts because it is less work and more pay. I just want him to keep his mental and physical health and not lose those things over wanting to live with me. That really speaks to how much I care about him. I want for everything to be comfortable for both of us at the end of the day.

I've now been driving my father's shitty car going on five months. Five months. He got it tuned up a couple weeks ago just so that it doesn't blow up while i'm driving it, but still needs $400-500 worth of work before it's actually... You know... A tolerable ride. It gets me from point A to point B, which I can't complain about, but it does it with the most rumbling and grumbling as any car can do. He's said he's willing to have the repair work done, but only if I'm actually going to keep the car. There's no point in fixing it up if we're just going to pawn it off for significantly less than the damn thing is worth, which isn't much in the first place. My rearview mirror fell off the other day. Just. Straight up fell off while I was driving. That's what we're talking about quality-wise. Anyways. Five months. Five months i've been driving this damn car and listening to my mother bitch about me not having a better car, but her being unwilling to go with me to look at a fucking car. I've brought her... Probably over 20 potential cars at this point and we've looked at one. One. That I didn't even pick out because it was 1) Way outside my budget and 2) a compact car, which I wasn't comfortable driving in the first place, let alone after being involved in a head-on collision. I want to fucking scream. But Glare, you’re legally an adult. Why don't you go out and just buy a car yourself? Partially because I have no idea what i'm doing? I know next to nothing about cars, nor car buying, and need a Real Adult to make sure i'm not getting swindled into buying some piece of shit. Which is all 90% of the local dealers sell. But mostly because I don't actually have any of my money on hand. When I got my refund check from the insurance company, my mother had it transferred into her account because her name was still on my account from when I was a minor & "I shouldn't have that much money just sitting around". Like what do you think I'm going to do with it??? Give it all to the local weed man??? I can’t even smoke; it makes me violently ill lmao... Her name is off my account now because I overdrew last month trying to get gas and it affected her credit score. And boy did I receive a stern lecturing on that. Like what the fuck was she expecting??? I'm still financially dependent on her!!! I told her like twelve times I needed gas money, and she said she would put some on my account but just never did??? She won't let me get a job because she works two jobs, my stepfather also works full time, and I have younger siblings on entirely different school/extracurricular schedules who can't yet drive. They are 16 & 17 respectively. Not driving. So I'm running them around... Basically from 6 in the morning (my brother has to be at class by 7:30 at the latest) to sometimes after 9 at night depending on where my sister's soccer practice is scheduled (One field is a 45 minute drive one-way even without traffic). I literally do not have time for a job unless I work a graveyard shift somewhere, but then when would I sleep? Who knows? I can't even pick up valet work for Lyft or Uber or something for the 3 hours of free time I actually get at a time because i'm not 21 yet. Which cycles back around to me not having a reliable car. Because i'm driving everywhere??? Every day??? And my mom complains about me not having a safe car but??? Won't look at a car??? She wants something local because she doesn't want to have to go with me to pick something up out of town, but all local dealers are just a circle-jerk of inflated prices I can’t afford and she doesn't trust private sellers enough to meet them somewhere and look at the car. I'm just??? Tired of running in circles!!! I'm trying!!! She wants me to carry my own weight financially, but she won't let me get a job. She wants me to apply to school and go away, but she keeps planning life around me being here to pick up the slack. I get so many snide comments about still living with my mother, unemployed, at 20, but she has blocked every possible move i've made trying to go forward. I can't even go get my fucking prescription renewed for my anxiety meds/antidepressants!!! I don't have any money & can't afford the fucking appointment on my own because my doctor won't prescribe me more than 6 months’ worth of pills at a time. Which, now that 6 months is up, I have to go back in for another full eval to make sure i'm not addicted to the shit or whatever fucking reason he has for dragging me back twice a year. I've been off them for months, which has fucking wrecked my relationship (I was dumped with prejudice last weekend lmao) and I am at my wits end. It's frustrating as fuck. I can't go to my biological father about anything more than what he offers because he's trying to put the other brother of mine through college at his expensive dream school and my stepfather is so deep in student loans he'll never be able to dig himself out, let alone help me with anything. Who the fuck gets a Master's Degree in city planning anyways??? But yeah. Turns out what I thought were allergies was actually the onset of a flu I picked up who fucking knows where, so i'm sick as a dog and a massively grouchy bitch rn. But that's where I am in life. Graduated with a two-year degree and on the fast train to Fucking Nowhere.

The musician's chronic rheumatoid arthritis forces her to take an expensive drug called Enbrel to prevent her joints from fusing – she pays for it with health insurance purchased through the Affordable Care Act. If Republicans repeal Obamacare, she'll be one of numerous independent artists who, along with more than 20 million Americans, will abruptly lose their coverage.

Trump and the GOP Are Hell-Bent on Making America Sick Again There's no definition of "great" that includes millions more people getting ill and dying "We were hoping to do some more touring in the fall, but I don't know how I'm going to be able to do that — I don't know how to get insurance without having a full-time job," Wright tells Rolling Stone. "I don't want to complain, because certainly everyone has to do that, but it's hard. Like most musicians, I'm piecing everything together by teaching lessons and doing gigs."

Although Republicans have ripped Obamacare as a disastrous form of taxing-the-rich socialism since it passed Congress in 2010, the act has given struggling Americans a lifeline for buying health insurance, often for the first time. Musicians have been an especially vulnerable segment of this group — just before the law took effect in 2013, the Future of Music Coalition estimated they were uninsured at a rate of almost three times more than the general population. Many, like Wright, previously patched together insurance plans through spouses (she is divorced) and occasional day jobs (she stopped working as a bookkeeper at a Charlottesville, Va., café when the ACA came along). Others never had insurance and simply did their best to avoid health catastrophes.

"Before, I was able to just fly blind because I was like, 'I just can't afford that and I just have to stay healthy and be lucky,'" says Julian Koster, 42, a Neutral Milk Hotel instrumentalist who did not buy health insurance until he signed up for a $200 monthly Obamacare plan. "I don't know if I could fly blind now. You don't get younger."

"This is taking things away from people who definitely need it." For much of his life, Andrew Savage, the 30-year-old singer-guitarist for New York indie-rock band Parquet Courts, went without health insurance. The musician suffers from epilepsy and suffers two or three seizures a year, the most severe of which have resulted in head trauma. He quit his day job six years ago to tour with the band, which was just starting to take off, but that meant no insurance to pay for his daily medication. He spent years shuffling payments on credit cards; once, he openly wept when a pharmacist told him a generic drug was available for $40 instead of $400.

The ACA would have helped, but by the time it took effect in 2013, the members of Parquet Courts were big enough, like most successful bands, to form a Limited Liability Company and purchase group insurance. "We were worried that if we got Obamacare, there would be a lot of limitations — the bill, when it was first conceived, was very different from the one that made it through because so many things got taken away from Obama and his original vision of the plan," Savage says from his Brooklyn home. "Of all the sinister things promised by Donald Trump, this has got to be one of the most scoundrel-ish — this is taking things away from people who definitely need it."

Even musicians who haven't purchased insurance through the exchanges have benefited from Obamacare. Insurance companies can no longer raise rates for customers who have pre-existing conditions. That means sick people have an easier time than ever getting coverage.

Six Stories of Obamacare Already Making a Difference Families, small business owners and more who are finally getting health care thanks to the Affordable Care Act Members of Drive-By Truckers, the veteran southern-rock band, run an LLC and share a group health-insurance plan. But 52-year-old Patterson Hood, one of the band's lead singers, says the central Obamacare provision that prevents insurance companies from raising rates due to members' pre-existing conditions has helped his family immeasurably. His wife and 12-year-old daughter have scoliosis, or curvature of the spine, and his 7-year-old son has growth hormone deficiency that requires an expensive shot every day for the next decade.

"My son's shots are in the thousands per month. I mean, it's a lot of money. And we do not have it," he tells Rolling Stone just before a Conan appearance in Los Angeles. "We're paying $2,000 a month as it is just for the insurance. I'm lucky I'm gainfully employed — my band, we're not stars, but we're successful enough to where I can make ends met. But it terrifies me. It literally woke me up in the middle of the night last night."

During the election, Trump told reporters he would keep the provision about pre-existing conditions. But he would not promise to keep the mandate, requiring all Americans to buy a plan, that essentially allows health insurance companies to pay for it.

"It terrifies me. It literally woke me up in the middle of the night last night." Republicans have yet to announce a replacement plan aside from Trump's recent tweet about "something terrific." Democrats have vowed to protect the centerpiece of President Obama's agenda for the past eight years — Chuck Schumer, the Senate minority leader, has branded the Republicans' repeal efforts "Make America Sick Again" — but lack the votes to truly do anything about it. If Republicans repeal the entire ACA, as they've threatened repeatedly to do for years, they would allow insurance companies to resume raising rates for Americans with pre-existing conditions.

As Democrats prepare for a fight to maintain the ACA, indie musicians are gradually joining the cause. Kelley Deal of the Breeders and R. Ring recently met with outgoing Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Mathews Burwell in Washington, D.C., and turned the encounter into a pro-Obamacare media opp.

Like Ex Hex's Wright, Deal went for years without health insurance, at one point buying insurance through her husband's plan until they divorced. Deal has hypothyroidism, which she found out through a routine checkup; today, she pays for meds and doctors through an ACA plan. "If that goes [away], then I don't know that I could get insurance," she says from her Dayton, Ohio, home. "I'm 55, I'm self-employed and I have a previous condition that requires medicine every single day."

The Washington-based Future of Music Coalition, which has been following the problem of musicians without healthcare for years, is encouraging those who haven't purchased an Obamacare plan to do so while open enrollment continues through the end of January. Indie musicians are like self-employed artists and freelance writers, but they add the unique characteristic of touring the country, often playing dingy, germ-infested clubs in beat-up vans and greeting dozens of people they've never met. "When you have touring musicians traveling together in very close quarters, when one person gets sick, they all get sick. Or you're backstage and a fan gives somebody a hug, and they happen to be sick, then everybody in the band is sick," says Brian Ross, manager of Thievery Corporation, Blackalicious and others. "After the ACA passed, there were a lot of young touring musicians who began to realize that this previously unattainable insurance that no one had a chance to get was a real option."

i’m sick and i don’t know what it means. what with. how to fix it. i guess i haven’t tried hard enough. going to doctors a bunch over the last year doesn’t make up for the fact that i ended up cutting off of meds cold turkey. and then ruining christmas.

trying first to explain to my younger brother B how hip hop isn’t actually dumb or bad. he used to love hip hop. it was confusing and difficult to understand. shortly after mental health came up. he used the word ‘pussification.’ i tried to explain that it isn’t something that can just be controlled. turned off, or gone around even. turns out he’s as stubborn as i am. pussification. i couldn’t even communicate the latent sexism. and the fact that i was trying to sort out my own, uh, pussification. in the sense of weighing the how-to, pros, and cons inherent in transitioning. that i had only within the preceding few months even solidly accepted that i was into guys, and would be pursuing what at the time would’ve been a gay relationship. it stung, hearing what felt like an assault on my emergent trans identity, sexuality, and mental health struggles all at once. but i held on tight.

i broke later. discussing something related to capitalism, wages if i recall initially though it branched out, with my aunt. then my brother A jumped into it. and my dad. and B again. and from the periphery my other aunt. me against the world. it was polite enough at first but ultimately, i ended up so buried trying to communicate disclaimers and softening my arguments so as not to offend anyone, that the people arguing against me would interrupt me before i’d even gotten to the point i was trying to make. the interruptions at a certain point got aggressive. i was passionate, but i didn’t get heated until right before i broke down. i got flustered and panicky and said “i need to stop” and hurried past everyone from the back corner of the room over to the stairs, then down into the basement. i sobbed and cried. my dad came down and apologized and cried too. he often does. it means alot that he cares enough to regret these things. but it doesn’t stop them from happening.

strung out on meds after being denied long term disability by insurance (Sun Life) on the grounds of it being a pre-existing condition. I was under a month (might have been just a week but i can’t remember for sure) from the ‘pre-existing condition’ clause no longer applying. i went off of work for having panic attacks and breakdowns. hyperventilating in the bathroom. crying on shift. picking beard hair out of my face to the point of it leaving patches and having to shave. they paid me short term disability, then denied me long term after leading me to believe it was just a matter of paperwork going through. which left me out of money and out of work. no money, no meds, i thought. i mean, while waiting for their decision, i had lost upwards of 30 pounds. unable to afford food. going a day or two at a time on an apple poached from the fruit dish upstairs. then caving and stealing eggs and making them while my dad and his wife were at work when i got so hungry i stopped being able to move. that was my life. i stayed on meds through a bunch of that, but when they turned off my income, i lashed out and immediately dumped by remaining meds, shortly before the christmas shitshow. a couple of weeks prior i think. if i didn’t have an income, i didn’t owe it to anyone to keep taking them. they weren’t working. and i wouldn’t even be able to afford a co-pay for renewal. might as well get withdrawal over with, i thought. i stopped going to therapy after the third appointment where she shrugged and told me change how i think about things. it wasn’t working. i wasn’t having success. and it got so awkward and uncomfortable trying to explain why the treatment wasn’t making sense to me, and having her respond the same way, that i couldn’t get over the threshold when the next appointment came. i canceled via email and made up an excuse and said i’d reach out again to reschedule if that was okay. knowing i never would.

losing my income, i sold both of my guitars, still a bit before christmas. got nickel-and-dimed pretty bad. got like $800 which i paid $400 to dad for rent, and the rest, i used for groceries and fast food dopamine chasing. i didn’t have much in my life. giving in and irresponsibly getting a sub for $8 honestly kept me going. especially after losing my guitars. i still love singing, and occasionally write bad poetry, but music was my capital O Outlet. i miss it so much. i miss having ideas and being able to fumble my way through the process of trying to pull it out of my head. i don’t know when i’ll be able to get a guitar again. in this time period, i continued losing weight and struggling to find food. especially once the guitar money ran out. it didn’t last terribly long. somewhere in january i went to social services and now i’m receiving a small monthly stipend that i usually burn through by the 15th or 20th. sometimes i burn it at bars. i go to bars to read. i can be at a bar and feel like i’m socializing even when i’m not. when i’m there alone. shallow pleasantries with a server. chatter all around me. it helped. coffee shops too, but most of them close early, and i stay up all night so i don’t have to be awake while my dad is home and active. coffee shops don’t work as well. but alcohol and pub food is extremely expensive when you’re dead broke. so, like i said, i run out by the 15th or 20th. between a few pub trips, coffee shop runs, fast food weakness, and groceries.

i went the long way around, but it’s been a few months on social security payments and weeks at a time being pinned in the bedroom with dad and his wife periodically expressing frustration with me for being here. it’s led to me trying to be invisible. but i also run out of money and ultimately poach food from the fridge. when there’s cans of pop i break down and take them sometimes. i hate myself for it. i try to replace them when i do have money, but then i drink those too. i get panicky to the extent that i haven’t been able to refill my water when they’re awake and home, let alone use the stove. even when i have food. even going to the bathroom i try to time out so i only have to leave the room when they’re in bed or not home. i know this is messed up. they’re not being directly cruel. it’s more passive aggressive. and apparent in how they speak to me, when we’re in situations where we speak. situations that are occurring less and less frequently as i back away, and they back away too. i can feel the frustration. sometimes dad lets comments slip i think by accident. it’s clear that i’m not welcome here. and i get it. i’d want my place to be my own place too. but it’s also been a terrifying experience for me, trying to cope with being unwanted. it’s been just about a year now, here. not for one second has it been good. it’s humiliating. i’m 33. i just want to live on my own and not starve. god i want to live on my own and not starve so bad. so that’s where i’m at.

i’ve been reading lately about autism. i’ve been diagnosed with cluster B BPD which shares symptoms with autism. and there are some autism indicators that i at least don’t think i share. but also lots of accounts from autistic people that i’ve experienced directly day to day. or have figured prominently in the leadup to gruesome lifequakes (i’ve had 4 or 5 at least.) so now i’m thinking, am i autistic? or have i created confirmation bias as i desperately search for a diagnosis that will lead to effective treatments? i had told my therapist and my psychiatrist and my parents and my MD that i think if i had a safe, private place to live, and enough money for food, that i could at least do a better job working on treatment recommendations. i think that would go a long way. maybe the BPD treatments and meds, thus far completely ineffective by any tangible noticeable measure, would work better if i weren’t breaking down at work, or freaking out about not making rent. the System couldn’t make that happen i guess. so now i’m living in an immensely unhealthy environment, eating poorly for 10-15 days every month, too afraid of people to even socialize let alone go jobhunting again, and trying to diagnose myself with something that will get me help. real help. i’m suicidal. i’m fucked up. i’m hoping i can get on EI disability soon, but even that only lasts for a few months so it’s a bandaid.

i have a doctor’s appointment re: HRT for transition and i’m going to cut my food budget so i can buy makeup and a wig in the meantime. femme clothes will have to wait unfortunately. i’m fighting back suicidal ideation by imagining my future as a woman, planning to volunteer at Pride (god i hope i can make a friend or two, being alone hurts so much i can’t stop crying about it) and hoping that i can get a referral to a new psychiatrist soon. One that’s trans friendly. i had a rough experience with the last one when i came out to him. a new therapist too probably. i can’t see myself getting over the discomfort and trying to get back in to see my old one. my visits with her were limited by the province anyhow - her job isn’t to have permanent patients.

if i can get EI disability, move out into my own place without a roommate - a bachelor suite that’s safe and comfortable would be enough, - buy some thrift store femme clothes, start learning makeup, and get on HRT + a referral to a good psychiatrist and therapist... if i can have some of those things work out, even. maybe it’ll start getting better. maybe i’ll be able to look in the mirror again. maybe i’ll be comfortable going out in public. maybe i’ll make a friend or two through volunteer work. maybe this year, i’ll be able to at least conceive of a way to buy a decent electric guitar. but i mean, all of this stuff, even making and keeping friends, requires money. and i’d very sincerely rather die than get the customer service work i’m ‘qualified’ for right now. i’ve been to the ER after screaming about suicide and bawling at work twice in the last couple years. i can’t honestly say i’d go to the hospital again if things got that intense. stabilize first, then work.

i guess all of this depends on whether or not the canadian safety net is strong enough to keep me afloat. applying for EI has taken forever and will only last i think 4 months. the government absorbed my tax refund into my outstanding student loan debt. social security doesn’t pay enough to cover rent literally anywhere. housing assistance may or may not approve me - i can’t even apply usefully until i have EI income, since housing assistance does not = free rent and i sure as hell don’t have a damage deposit saved up.

things don’t look good. i don’t know what i’m sick with. i have no money. and i’m living in hell. this isn’t coherent or well written, i know. it serves no functional purpose. but it feels better to dump it on the internet than it did to scrawl it in my diary in apoplectic fits as it was all happening. maybe some day i’ll try to tell a real story. to tell a story, usefully. to some end other than weakly grasping at small measures of catharsis. i hope some day i can. for now, it’s enough to scream “i’m hurting” and walk away. so now i’m gonna go outside into the violent wind, and walk away.

50/30/20 Method Is Perfect if You’re on a Budget… but Still Have a Life

Budgets are terrifying.

There. I said it.

If you’re anything like me, when someone says the word “budget,” you instantly want to wrap all your favorite splurge items in a big mental bear hug.

“Don’t worry, beer money. I won’t let them get you! HBO, just don’t look at them. Maybe they’ll go away.”

A budget that makes you account for every single dollar can be suffocating. But the problem with this mode of thinking is that it focuses on the negative.

As a self-proclaimed optimist, I know I need to reprogram my brain to see the positives. But how do I do that when someone wants to eliminate all of my fun money?

Here’s how: Work with a budget plan that doesn’t put a stranglehold on your fun money.

And it turns out there is a budget out there that does just that. It’s called the 50/30/20 budget plan, and it’s perfect for people who, like me, freak out at the thought of budgeting.

Seriously, you can even keep your morning Starbucks run.

How to Use the 50/30/20 Budget Plan

The 50/30/20 budget plan was popularized by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a bankruptcy expert, and her daughter, business executive Amelia Warren Tyagi, in their co-authored book, “All Your Worth: The Ultimate Lifetime Money Plan.”

The goal is to break down your monthly after-tax income and focus your spending in three broad categories.

Essential Living: 50%

This category is for the essential bills. Let me emphasize that word: essential.

Rent or mortgage: You know, that place where you live.

Utilities: So you can cook your ramen noodles.

Groceries: Because those ramen noodles don’t come free!

Car insurance and/or car payments: You do need a car… or do you?

Phone and internet: Let’s face it, they’re essentials — they help you read The Penny Hoarder!

Gas for your work commute: Because the boss thinks you’re too sweaty if you run to work every day.

Credit card and loan minimum payments: Make no mistake — making the minimum payments on your debts is an essential. You can’t afford to deal with the late fees and credit risks of not meeting that basic requirement. Period.

Other: Bills that are essential and probably no fun at all. Maybe you have prescription meds, day care costs or even doggie day care. Yes, Mr. Barky counts. But your wine-of-the-month club does not.

Personal Spending: 30%

This is the category that makes this budget work for the budget-averse. It’s all of the stuff you like to spend money on but don’t really need. You know, goofin’ off money. Did you notice the percentage? It’s a decent amount.

Dining out: Because eating at a restaurant means no dishes!

Vacations: You could make a case for vacations being a necessity, but for this budget, they’re not. Save up for it, so you can enjoy whatever you’ve saved without the guilt — or the credit card payments.

Going out for movies or drinks: Seriously, socializing is important. Very important. Your morning latte? Go for it. Budget for it responsibly, and it’s all good.

Netflix and other in-home entertainment options: Yeah, I felt you cringe here. You finally cut the cord with cable, so this is an essential, right? Nope. There are ways to watch plenty of TV shows for free. That said, if you can fit it into this part of your budget, go for it.

Shopping for clothes, decor, etc.: I know. That sale won’t last forever! You can get the latest styles, but you have to budget for them.

Financial Goals: 20%

This category puts the focus on helping you improve your financial health, because it turns out that being less poor is more fun than being poor. #lifegoals

Investments: This includes your 401(k) and all other investments. Don’t have any yet? It’s never too late to start investing.

Savings: One of the biggest steps to financial health is having emergency savings so you don’t step backward every time an unexpected expense pops up.

Debt-reduction payments: This is for payments on your credit cards, student loans and any other debts that are above the minimum payment. As long as you owe money, it’s hard to get ahead. And yes, that $400 you borrowed from your roommate for that weekend in Vegas fits here. (Even though it’s interest-free, you may want to pay your friend back first.)

Tips for Budgeting Success With the 50/30/20 Rule

Let’s start with the biggest chunk. That 50% number you should put toward necessities is a maximum. Yes, that’s right. A maximum.

If your monthly bills are higher than 50% of your monthly income, you need to make some adjustments. Ideally, your housing shouldn’t cost more than 30% of your take-home pay. If it does, you may need to consider downsizing. It’s not fun, but it could be a key step to getting ahead financially.

Next, take a good look at your personal spending. Again, that 30% is a hard line. If you go over your past year’s bank statements, you’ll probably find that your spending is a bit high in this category. I know I’ve been guilty.

If you worry about building your savings category to 20% of your income, try these tips:

How often do you eat out at restaurants? Are you shopping smart for groceries? Be honest with yourself, and think about lunch during the workday, too. Can you trim that expense? Maybe you’ve got space outside and can start a garden.

Take a hard look at your TV, phone and internet bills. Do you need all of those premium services? Cut back a little and see how you do. When’s the last time you read a book? Check out your local public library for a ton of free books, movies and more.

Shopping: We all love it, even if we claim we don’t. It may be clothes. Or it might be books. Whatever your weakness is, set a budget for yourself. Have old stuff you don’t want anymore? Sell it and add that money to this part of the budget!

Finally, realize that the financial goals category is where this simple budgeting system helps you the most. That 20% is not a hard cap. If you can find a way to save more, pay off more on your debts or boost your investments, do it.

Why the 50/30/20 Budget Works

This method works well for those new to budgeting or put off by rigid spreadsheets.

Splitting your expenses into these three broad categories will get you thinking about the value of your purchases, while providing flexibility as you find your frugal footing.

And by building pleasurable spending into your financial plan, you’ll be able to enjoy what’s most important to you while you find places to cut spending.

When the 50/30/20 Budget Doesn’t Work

For some, the numbers simply won’t add up.

Maybe you have two jobs and still can’t earn double the price of rent in your area. Maybe your day care options are limited. Or maybe your student loan debt is taking up most of your income.

For others, there may not be enough structure in this method. (Looking at you, color coordinators.)

That’s OK.

There are plenty of budgeting methods to choose from. Sometimes, you can modify these methods to fit your needs; other times, they just don’t work.

What’s most important is that you zero in on eliminating debt and growing your personal wealth.

Is it fun? No. But when you find a budgeting method that works for you, it’s not torture, either.

Just remember: Personal finance is about prioritizing and then weeding out expenditures you can live without. It’s not about living like a hermit or denying yourself any fun.

I was hit from behind on Wednesday evening heading to work. The driver was ticketed by the police and their insurance company has admitted full liability. Injury wise, I have whiplash which thankfully, is going away now. My car, according to their adjuster, is going to be claimed as totaled. So, my car is valued at 7400, and repairs just from visual inspection, are 7015. So they are going the totaled route as its cheaper for them. After they buy the car from me, they will sell it to salvage, expect to get 2k from it, and only be out 5400 instead of a full cost of repairs. So I've had the car for a year and half, taken out on a 5yr car loan. I still owe 12k on it. After they cut a check to the lean holder, I'm still responsible for 5k on that loan. The bank and my insurance at the time didn't offer gap insurance. Stupid of me, I let my current policy expire to search around for a more affordable policy. I kept procrastinating, and the accident happened with me having no insurance. Lucky he hit me and is at fault. I'm trying to see what my options are. I've gone to the liable company's website and see their basic plan for my state, law requires 25k in property liability for at fault accidents, plus medical etc. So I'm wondering what should I expect from the lady handling this claim. I'm not fooled when she called me yesterday and said that she is here to work with and for me. Saying that there is probably a lot of talk about lawyers, just know they will take 30-40% of you settlement. Know that I'm here to work for you, try to work with me I'm thinking my head total bull crap. 1, she works for her insurance company first, and will have their interest first, 2, she works for their client and to protect them from me in a suit. In the end, I'm not stuck with a car that they will not fully pay to have repaired, and will still owe 5k after they pay the loan holder the value of the car. Well money is tight right now and I'm shopping around for a new auto insurance. I live in CA and so far the cheapest one I've found is Mercury insurance. I was playing around with the different personal criteria having fun wondering if having a different profession or having a college degree would change the premium. I found one option significantly changed the price and that was if I selected a different location where I principally garaged my car. The premium changed by about $200 for a year of coverage. It was based on zip code and I put the one that I used while I was in college which is in northern CA but I m in southern CA. Churchill Car Insurance Problem?

Had accident which was my fault in Nov 08, hit a van in rear that stopped suddenly going through a roundabout (less than 5mph) and his trailer hitch ball went into my radiator and damaged the hood, grill and radiator. Car was 1996 Honda in very reasonable condition, MOT'd and all in good service despite its 125,000 mileage, new tyres, exhaust, battery, and clean throughout. Had fully comprehensive insurance with 50 deductable, loaner car and legal support so paid to be protected. When car was collected from accident, collecting garage said at that time that due to the mileage my car would not be repaired. However it took 5 to 6 weeks for the insurance examiner to determine that my car was beyond repair, so I did without a car all that time. Despite repeated phone calls to them, they never called me back as their examiner was on holiday. Then when we finally agree that a price of 500 for my car in January 08 and that took some haggling, the cheque never and so I started chasing them down in early February. I am then informed that I did not disclose a speeding violation on my application and they would have to listen to the tapes of my applying to verify this. Again this took several weeks, and I again had to pursue them for an answer to which they then said I had applied on the internet so no record of a phone conversation. The internet application was misleading, asking for what I believed was 3 years worth of offenses. I've only ever had 2 speeding offenses in my entire life - both speed cameras, just over the limit. The first was at 6 a.m. and I passed a bus pulling over to stop and as I passed it got flashed. The second on the day I found my dad had days to live and I was rushing to catch a flight, and as in both instances was doing 42 mph in a 30 mph zone for a very short period. Nonetheless, I was speeding and paid my fines. I wrote to the insurance company and apologised for not telling them of the other speeding ticket from 4 years and 9 months earlier as I forgot about it. But I admitted it, and apologised in writing. Then then came back to me saying that there would be additional premium to pay before I would get paid for my car. Well, its October 08, and I finally got a letter from the insurers saying they are not paying me as I failed to pay the additional premium requested and they were not going to renew my policy. I have never been asked even after repeated letters to them how much the additional premium was, and what I should do. No replies. I have asked for my car back which they agreed to pay for, and now they state there is nothing they can do, and it is their final decision. I went to the financial ombudsman and unbelieveably DID NOT get a reply from them. I've even spoken to one of their survey staff who tells me that they are incredibly busy and it was probably put aside and not dealt with. I'm at a total loss as to where I stand and how to pursue this without spending more than the accident and car was worth. I've written to their data protection officer and obtained copies of all documentation pertaining to this, so by their records can verify all this information quite clearly. Finally, I maintained my cool with them at all times. Never once did I raise my voice or become unprofessional with them. My questions are: 1. Can I legally request my car back as it has never been paid for? 2. Were they taking money for policy on a car they knew that through mileage alone, they would never pay for loaner car, or to have repaired? 3. This has meant over 30 letters and more phone calls than that to deal with, and rarely do they call you back or reply at all. Can I claim for this time and distress? 4. Am I totally wasting my time? I have a car that is worth no more than $1500. I bought it off someone in my family and I should transfer ownership (as it is from a different state). Alright. I am in desperate need of some knowledge. I just graduated from high school and live in Idaho with my boyfriend and his parents.
