A STEP FROM CALVINISM

This blog will now turn to an effort this writer will revisit in the future.  He fears he might have misled the reader of this blog a bit and this effort is meant to clear any misconceptions.  He has repeatedly claimed that the US had as a dominant view of governance and politics what he calls the parochial/traditional federalism view or construct.  He described that view in more or less positive language although he has pointed out that it encouraged or justified Americans holding racist and other xenophobic beliefs, attitudes, and values.  

He didn’t underestimate those negative qualities, but he did want to make sure the reader appreciates its positive qualities.  The positive qualities have to do with the construct’s set of espoused values of community, partnership, and collaboration.  But at the same time, people who held on to its espoused values made no excuses for the exclusionary policies its adherents proposed and maintained. Those policies included slavery, discriminatory practices, and other exclusionary behaviors Americans commonly put into effect.

Probably the most direct and unambiguous pronouncement of this exclusion can be found in the Supreme Court’s decision in the Dred Scott Case. Chief Justice Taney clearly states that African Americans – be they enslaved or not – were not part of the partnership the Constitution established.   Here is a portion of that decision:

In the opinion of the court, the legislation and histories of the times, and the language used in the declaration of independence, show, that neither the class of persons who had been imported as slaves, nor their descendants, whether they had become free or not, were then acknowledged as a part of the people, nor intended to be included in the general words used in the memorable instrument … [1]

Taney here is not shy of what he interpreted the founding compact to be in terms of African Americans.

And a lot of this exclusion falls in line with certain religious biases generally held but originating with the Puritan settlers of the Massachusetts colony and, in general, in the New England.  It was the Puritans who introduced the covenanted approach to the establishment of governments.  

Puritanism was based on Calvinism that, in turn, believed in strict moral precepts, predestination, and a rebellion against adorned trappings and the hierarchical organization of the Roman Catholic and Anglican Churches.  Through these beliefs, that tradition promoted an equality within its congregations and as interpreted in governance, this sense of partnership was strongly encouraged but as indicated years later by Taney’s opinion, was limited to those considered part of the “tribe.”

Such scholars as Donald Lutz[2] have traced how these precepts, especially those based on congregational ideals, worked their ways into the various founding documents.  These documents were drawn in the localities within the original thirteen colonies.  One can also detect them guiding the development of the states as the nation initially established its governments and expanded westward across North America.

This posting begins this writer’s effort to take a closer look at that historical record.  The postings that will further this effort will not be immediately follow each other (although the next posting, at least, will continue this posting’s message). Instead, this topic will be revisited here and there but with more frequency in the upcoming year or so.  

This first installment looks at the effect of this tradition on the development of the nation’s public schools.  And the first topic has to do with the hiring of teachers.  By the 1820s, school officials were finding it difficult to fill teaching slots in what had been a male dominated “profession.”  The problem was a reluctance to raise either taxes or church contributions to pay men sufficiently.  

The option was to hire women to those positions.  In terms of timing, this coincided with the efforts to establish independent public schools especially in Massachusetts and through the work of Horace Mann.  His story is telling in terms of how parochial/traditional federalism influenced the development of the nation’s initial efforts to provide public education.

And it is with him that this blog begins its look at this development. Relevant to this story, Mann was elected to the lower house of the Massachusetts’ legislature in 1827.  His political leanings encouraged him to join up with the initial political organizing that led to the establishment of Whig Party. This was a movement that brought together socially liberal advocates with northeastern business interests.

They were liberal in that they pushed for the establishment of insane asylums and for public funding of schools for the deaf and blind.  He himself argued for an end to the death penalty and doing away with lotteries as being unchristian.  He attained a level of notoriety when he was assigned to investigate the burning of a Catholic convent in the town of Charleston.  This led to his political advancement that resulted in his election to the state senate.

An ironic aspect of his story was his belief in phrenology – the belief in and analysis of people’s physical attributes as causal factors in their behaviors.  He, unlike others who looked at such characteristics, used the derived analyses as a way to discover potential shortcomings in people that could be addressed by education.  

That is, “[d]uring the nineteenth century, phrenology was considered a progressive ideology.  Its proponents believed that each individual’s deficiencies could be identified, then ameliorated through schooling; … [and therefore] would eradicate poverty and crime in just a few generations.”[3]  Interestingly, he saw the utilization of phrenology as a substitute for the prevailing reliance on religion to guide such judgements.  Further, through that guidance one could lead challenged individuals – even arsonists – to productive lives.

This bent in his public acts did not go unnoticed by local religious personage and elicited a fire-and-brimstone sermon reaction from the local Calvinist preacher.  But the experience led Mann to take up education as an issue that would lead him to establish his place in American history.  School reform became his life’s work.  And in this he bucked the thrust of Whigs who favored laissez faire policies in the economy and other social areas of concern.  

By the late 1830s he was leading Whigs to establish a state board of education to oversee Massachusetts’ local schools and to institute compulsory education.  By that time, as a state senator, he left the legislature to become the first state’s secretary of education.  He took it upon himself to become versed in educational theories and looked to reputable systems particularly Prussian schools.  That European system in the nineteenth century instituted various policies to upgrade the teaching profession including higher pay and prohibition of teachers holding other jobs.

From the Prussian example, Mann instituted the policy for the Massachusetts’ school system that every school have a library and that the state established “normal schools” for the purpose of training teachers.  Again, normal schools were originally only open to women applicants – the reasoning being women could be paid less than men. Later in the twentieth century, these schools were converted into regional state colleges (having lower admission standards than state universities).

Unfortunately, much of Mann’s reasoning for these sexist policies had to do with his sexist beliefs.  While he saw teaching as a woman’s profession, albeit economic reasoning was offered, he also believed women were not appropriate for certain occupations such as politics, military, and journalistic professions – they were not suitable due to their “black and sulfurous” environments.

All these elements of the Mann’s story were instrumental in defining how Calvinist traditions and biases affected the development of American education. The aim is to give the reader some of the detail of how this influence was felt and give a hint, at least, as to why it finally gave way to the natural rights view.  There were various social and political forces that pushed toward the eventuality of that transformation.

The Amityville Horror (1979)

What’s scarier than The Amityville Horror? Remembering it was really good, telling all the naysayers they were wrong for years and then rewatching it to find out you were the one who was wrong all along.

“Based on true events” it’s the story of the Lutz family, who move into a big ol’ house where, a year before, the entire household was murdered by their teenage son. Soon after they settle in, weird stuff starts happening and everyone gets mighty scared.

The setup is terrific. The house itself is awesome and frightening from the get-go. George Lutz (James Brolin) is the new stepfather and he’s in over his head. New wife, three kids, a whole lot of money spent on a big house... it’s starting to get to him. You get a sense the building is starting to warp his mind, that another set of grisly murders is imminent. The actual spooky events, however... they’re not impressive.

I went into this movie ready to be not scared, but terrified. I have no idea what about it made me scream previously. This movie... it’s just ok. The problem is it sticks too close to the “real events” which inspired it. It sounds weird but hear me out. Too many - a window suddenly falling on someone’s hand or a door getting stuck - can be easily explained as un-supernatural. Anyone inside the house shouldn't be convinced there's anything demonic or ghostly going on; just a string of bad luck. Not helping is the family, all of whom under-react to what's happening. A certain discovery in the basement would have anyone who's ever seen a horror movie running for the hills, but they basically ignore it. Had the screenplay taken some liberties with the events and played up blood coming out of the walls, glowing eyes seen outside the windows, mysterious voices during the night and that kind of thing, it would've been something. As is, you wonder when it's finally going to pick up.

Many plot points go nowhere and should have been dropped to either trim down the running time (it’s nearly two hours) or flesh out the characters. Let's get to know George, Kathleen (Margot Kidder), Greg (K. C. Martel), Matt (Meeno Peluce), and Amy (Natasha Ryan) instead of George’s friend’s wife, a self-proclaimed psychic who gets several opportunities to give a bunch of outlandish, baloney explanations for what's going on in the house. That said, the relationship between George and Kathy is quite interesting. As the house and the stress starting driving a wedge between them, you feel genuine tension. There are at least two very good, very frightening scenes who still give me the chills just thinking about them. The pace is slow but I appreciate the film slowly building up the eeriness. Unfortunately, it's pointless - the opening scene tells us exactly how many days the family ended up staying in the house and constant reminders that we’re at “day 5” or “day 11”. So many things this film does well are undone by bad decisions throughout it gets frustrating.

For horror fans, I would recommend The Amityville Horror. There are some frightening scenes and that house is a terrific "villain". For everyone else, this is just an average horror movie. It just isn’t eventful or flashy enough to impress even the easily scared viewers like myself. (On DVD, November 1, 2014)

Ring for the Devil

Roland fiddled with the piece of chalk on his hand, the soft item leaving white powder on his soft hands. Completing the circle, he lifted himself off of his knees, smiling at his work. The teenager, wearing a Metallica shirt and black jeans, adjusted his circle-shaped lenses and moved towards the middle of the circle. Careful not to ruin the outline, he took out a switchblade, and cut the middle of his palm, letting the blood drip down his forearm and onto the wood-paneled floor. He then moved outside of the circle, wrapping his injured hand with a towel he had previously brought over.

Meanwhile, three boys sat in the corner of the bedroom, one looking excited, the other on his phone, and the last, looking tiredly at the scene before him.

"How many times are you gonna try this same stunt, dude? The last time you did it, your mom burst into the room as you were cutting your hand and she freaked the fuck out. We had to hide so we wouldn't be considered 'bad influences.'" Spoke the one looking at his phone, caramel-colored fingers tapping at the screen before him.

"Who are you even texting now?" Asked the asian teen sitting beside him, the one with a bored look on his face, glancing over his friend's shoulder curiously.

"N-None of your business! Hop off my dick, dude!" At the same time he was attempting to hide his phone from the nosier boy, his friend sitting on his other side grabbed his phone and looked at the screen, laughing while doing so.

"What is it?" Asked Zao, his previously tired expression shifting into one of amusement at what his friend might be up to.

"Its just a game where you take care of dogs, like the one on the DS a long ass time ago." He lifted the stolen phone's screen, it's glowing light showing an animated pitbull wagging it's tail happily.

"Stop! You'll hurt Herschel-"

"His name is Herschel?"

"No shit, I just call him Herschel for fun, his real name is Coochie Head-"

"Will you guys shut up!? I'm trying to do something here!" Roland burst, clearly angered at the group's shenanigans in the background of his ritual.

"Hehe. Coochie Head." Whispered the teen with long black hair. The happier teen, named Lutz, laughed at his words, and Roland shushed them once more. Allen, the tanned teen with an affinity for virtual dogs, snatched his phone back from the blonde's hands.

After his movement, the room filled with silence, so quiet that you could even hear the sound of the candle's flames that he lit, flicker. Allen, Zao and Lutz sat expectantly, knowing that whatever Roland was trying to achieve probably wouldn't happen, but they still couldn't help the rising feeling in their stomachs.

It stood quiet for about a minute or so. Then suddenly, a burst of light appeared from the middle of the circle, blinding the teens, and causing Roland to fall on the floor from where he was previously standing. A figure appeared, covered by a cherry red cloak, hiding their figure and face. Once the group came to their senses, they took in the sight before them. He actually did it. The crazy bastard finally fucking did it.

"Holy fucking shit." Whispered Zao, at a loss of words. A smile spread across Roland's face, and he laughed a little, however it was enough for the figure to hear him. Removing it's hood, Roland's eyes widened. How absolutely... stunning.

(H/c) locks ran down their back, while hypnotizing (E/c) eyes looked at the teenager with a confused expression.

"Strange, this isn't a highland in Scotland...."

Looking around the room, cloak swaying along their shoulders, and they snapped their fingers, as if a figurative lightbulb lit up in their head. Meanwhile, Allen, Zao, and Lutz, the blonde, all held their mouths wide open at the sight before them.

"I understand! A mortal must've summoned me!" The person, who looked to be around the same age as the boys, turned to face Roland, and smiled warmly, waving their hand. "It's been quite a while since someone's asked for my assistance, anyway... Sorry for being so confused." They bowed their head towards him, and lifted it back up while giving him a warm smile.

Roland merely nodded his head, muttering a sad excuse for an "It's okay.." The cloaked newcomer scanned the room until their eyes landed on the teens sitting in the corner. All three of them blushed when they made eye contact with the stranger.

"Aww! Look at you, you're all awestruck, you can barely speak! I don't get that very often anymore."

Roland lifted himself to his feet, as he was still on the floor from when he fell, and cleaned his glasses and put them back on again. The person had placed their hands on their hips, and a smirk held itself on their perfect lips.

"I suppose I don't need an introduction since you should know who or what you summoned, but I'll give you one anyway." Walking over to the teenager's nearby work desk and standing on top of it's deep brown surface, the stranger took off their cloak and flipped it around so it's fabric could land on their shoulder. A pure white uniform was shown underneath, reminding one of a royal, as the clothes consisted of neat white dress pants, a white smocked-cuff button up shirt, and knee-high heeled brown leather boots. They cleared their throat, and spoke loudly and rather proudly.

"Good day to one and all! For I have come to ruin it; Low and behold, the second of the legendary Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the legend themselves, War! Oh, and applause is not needed, but is surely appreciated!"

(I'm gonna make more parts to this cause i like the concept, so expect this to be a running thing and for updates to occasionally come! I'll consider making this a story on quotev, but for right now, it's just a little experiment on tumblr hehe)

Like Mariah is a super bubbly and lovable girl, but her skating somehow always ends up a bit sloppy to me because she doesn’t really nail her extensions

She has an immense amount of energy behind her skating, but it doesn’t translate to the ends of her fingers or toes, which makes everything seem really noodly

There are other skaters that don’t really skate fully, so their limbs aren’t really extended, and it’s not as noticeable bc their energy level corresponds with that

But Mariah throws me off because she has the energy, but it doesn’t translate, so it ends up just looking messy

PyeongChang Men’s SP Reaction

FOREWARNING: someone remind me to never do this again I literally sweat through my shorts going through this emotional earthquake

I had reservations about doing this reaction post but I’m watching the NBC mini-promos for everyone (cue lil’ kid saying that Javi is his ONLY hero <3) competing tonight and all the feels flooding in.

Also gonna put my dream podium out there in advance so I can lay claim to my fantasies before they possibly flop: Yuzu, Nathan, Javi (in that order for Gold, Silver, and Bronze), but ofc the best scenario is that everyone skates well and leaves the ice happy and the gremlin judges can do whatever. I haven’t watched a lot of the earlier-group men this season, but looking at their music choices I’m pretty excited for Julian Zhi Jie Yee’s Build a Home program (P/C’s 2016 FS from Euros that year still sticks with me) and hopefully Yaroslav hits his 4F. Just writing out everyone’s name is getting me hella nervous

Matteo Rizzo NICE 3A also considering that this is choreo’d by his mom this is great, strong Italian vibes, really good lines, straight camel with the leg position above the hip, good rotation; love the arms out of the 3Lz this would be a program I would want to do OKAY NBC WE GET THAT U NEED A QUAD TO GET ON THE PODIUM but friggin Matteo’s job is to make his mom choreo proud also considering how this is by far the biggest stage he’s been on after dethroning Ivan Righini, dis is gr8

Man he really floated on the 3A I’m hoping this’ll go into the low 70s yep 73.58 good score for him

so you talk with a lot of confidence on figure skating despite being a new fan. im also a new fan (thx yoi) but i dont have nearly the same confidence in it, judging skaters, programs, technical aspects etc. what did you exactly do to get to this point of knowledge in such a short time?

i just watched a lot! i kept up with last season from the grand prix series through worlds, watched a lot of videos of more famous now-retired figure skaters, made a conscious effort to learn how to recognize jumps and the various components of a program. i put in effort to understand how the sport is judged and scored - reading guides and watching videos and listening to commentary was really all i did. i really wanted to love and appreciate the sport on its own merit, and the more i watched it, the easier that was. i genuinely love figure skating as an art and a sport, so it was fun for me.

i mean i can’t possibly say i’m an expert nor even that i’m super confident in it. i’ve only been following the sport for less than a year – i know there are fans who know more than i do. i couldn’t say whether a spin definitely deserved a level 4, or if that jump had a GOE of +2.5 or +3, i’m not that good. but a lot of figure skating really does just come with increased exposure: recognizing jumps or over-rotations or even whether it’s a popped jump or a fully-rotated 3A gets a lot easier bc you’re used to seeing it done. not to mention there is an element of subjectivity in figure skating when it comes to performance. i’m always very confident in my own opinion!

so all i can say is just keep watching. honestly, though, you don’t need to be able to recognize a flip from a lutz to appreciate figure skating. it’s a beautiful sport whether you can or not. the emotions, the artistry, and the sheer athleticism are universal. if you want to know, then just keep watching and seeking out information! but don’t feel as though you have to in order to prove your love for it or anything. spreading the love of figure skating however it’s done is always a good thing. c:

"(Y/N), Liebling, relax a little." Lutz said, purposely making his voice more soft and inviting to lure her away from the desk she had been hunching over. He had been fully aware as his poor girlfriend slaved away over a ten page essay that wasn't even due the next day. He admired that she was hard working and wanted to get things done, but he didn't appreciate the way she ran herself ragged trying to complete things extremely early. Normally he wouldn't really do anything to bother her, if she wanted to do it early that was fine with him, but the fact that she hadn't slept in two days was beginning to get on his nerves just a little. The slightly harsh look she gave him had no bite for the exhaustion clear in her face and the bags under her eyes. She took a breath, the shadows from her desk light making her face look sallow. "Lutz, you don't understand. This is a ten PAGE essay and baby," She said softly, the harsh edge going away. Her (E/C) eyes drank in his relaxed form enviously before she looked back to his face. "Can we order out tonight?" She asked standing and wincing as her back popped with the new movement as she hadn't done much else other than hunch over the desk and write furiously on what she kept insisting was 'just the rough draft'. Lutz perked as she asked that. It wasn't often you heard her ask for take out instead of cooking the frozen meals in their freezer or some nonperishable food from the cabinet. With the look on her face and with the way she had been inhaling ramen for the past two days, he found himself nodding. "Alright." He rumbled and watched from the couch as she started to sit back down. He frowned. Without reason and for whatever reason, he found himself wanting to distract her from the work on her desk. "Liebling," he spoke up. "C'mere for a second." With one last glance at the work on her desk, she complied and stood at the edge of the fluffy couch.As she opened her mouth to say something, he shot up and wrapped his arms around her waist, yanking her off her feet and back with him as he plopped his head back on the pillow he had brought. A shriek of surprise had escaped her lips as her feet left the floor and she landed, none too gently, on top of her well built boyfriend. "Lutz! What the hell?!" Dislocations Gone Right [Jason Todd x Reader]

A/N: Hey guys! Sorry this took an extra day to get up. I’m up to my eyeballs in homework and responsibilities. But here is the figure skater fic FINALL! I really hope you all love it! It’s a longer one so fair warning lol. I tried my hardest to use correct terminology and did quite a bit of research for it. I really hope you guys enjoy this! If there was one thing you love, it’s figure skating. It’s been something you’ve done since you were a child. Always striding to get to that next step, complete that next turn, land that next jump. In the winter you could be found at a frozen pond behind your home, in the summer it was at the ice rink. Your parents watched you grow as their child and an athlete. Everyone in your family found your skating captivating whenever they got the chance to watch you. Family friends would often end up finding you on the pond and end up watching you as well.

You are born for this. It’s what you were put on this earth to do, and nothing was going to stop you. And nothing did. Continuing to grow in your skating, winning contest after contest. First place ribbons were your wallpaper. Winning at nearly every level. Though you had one step to overcome, and that’s to get into the Olympics. One day you’d represent everyone in your country on the ice. You know that day will come, it has too. It just has too.

So despite multiple concerns expressed by your coach and family you train day after day. Constantly being told not to strain yourself. How were you supposed to slow down when you’re this close?!

It wasn’t until a childhood friend asked if you would stop by to see her at one of the ice skating classes she would teach. Saying how the minute she expressed the both of you are friends her students begged for you to come and visit them. You had training to do, but how could you turn this down? You’d always wanted to help someone learn. Guest teaching a whole class would be an honor. So, you accepted the offer.

You were walking toward the ice rink your friend worked at. Hair pulled back with your bag hanging loosely on your shoulder. Though you weren’t paying attention to your surroundings while reading some texts from your coach. He was once again scolding you over not having taken any breaks since you were told you’re eligible participate in preliminary rounds.

This is kind of a break, right?

Walking in you accidentally bumped into someone, mumbling an apology before making your way inside. Not taking in the faces of the two men you bumped into.

Walking into the area of the rink you heard laughing and squealing. Obviously it was the young class warming up. Tucking your phone away, smiling at the sight of the young skaters.

Leaning against the barrier you just stared through the glass for a while. Watching the kids warm up and your friend making sure everyone was doing it correctly, you weren’t pulled away until you heard a small voice gasp.

Seeing a small girl with black locks and a pair of sparkling green eyes. “Y-you’re [F/n] [L/n]” she smiled pointing to you. Smiling with a small laugh you kneeled to her eye level, “I am, what’s your name sweetie?”

She smiled widely, “Lian!” exclaiming happily. “Well it’s a pleasure to meet you Lian.” holding your hand out to her. She took it, still beaming. “But excuse me if I’m wrong, shouldn’t you be warming up with your class?” noticing the pair of skates on her feet. She nodded before waving to you and running to the door of the rink. You were about to yell for her not to run in her skates but she was already gone and on the rink.

Laughing to yourself you shook your head. “She reminds me of me” sitting in a chair to slip your own pair on. “[F/n]!” Turning your head to the voice of your friend. “[Fd/n]” you greeted, standing up on the blade without so much as a wobble. Giving her a quick hug before she led you to the rink. “Gosh how have you been?” she questioned.

“You know, a lot of training. Getting scolded by my coach for over training.” You laughed, as did she. “You never were one for taking breaks” commenting while stepping on to the ice. Following suit you shrugged, “Guilty is charged.”

“ALRIGHT EVERYONE LINE UP” [Fd/n] called as all of the kids came over and stopped in front of you both. They all stared at you in awe. You looked at the class of about 7, 5 being girls and 2 being boys. “Okay everyone this is my friend I was telling you about, [F/n] [L/n]” they all smiled at you. “Hi everyone it’s so great to meet you all” waving to the kids with a smile of your own.

Noticing as the girl you recognized as Lian leaned to one of the boys and whispered “Told ya she was pretty” as the boy just blushed. Allowing you a small chuckled.

“What do you all say we get started, with some forward swizzles?” [Fd/n] clapped her hands together smiling. The kids proceeded to do their moves, this one a simple movement of skating your feet apart and then back together while gliding forward. All while keeping both skates on the ice. You watched and helped the kids where you could.

They liked to ask you a lot of questions on what it was like to be at your level. Especially during their water breaks. You barely got any time to talk to [Fd/n] because of their questions, not that you minded them.

The water breaks fell between teaching the kids. The lesson consisted of swizzles, dips, two foot glides, and even some one foot glides. You were rather impressed with the kids, often remembering back to when you first started skating.

It was fun to help them. Relaxing even. You were sad when the lesson began to draw to a close, loving teaching these kids. Sharing the passion you have for the sport with them. Crossing your arms you watched as [Fd/n] talked about an upcoming youth competition. Though as soon as she finished Lian had her hand in the air, ready to ask a question. “Yes Lian?”

“Can [F/n] please please please show us how she skates?” she begged, the other children nodding in agreement. Though you were taken aback at the question, you looked between the kids and [Fd/n] before sputtering out a ‘yes.’

Gliding over you stopped in front of the kids. “What do you guys what to see me do?” you asked, swaying your hands at your sides. They just shrugged, looking over you saw parents beginning to arrive and decided it’d be best to keep this short. “How about a couple spins?” you questioned smiling. All of their faces lit up at the suggestion as they vigorously nodded their heads.

You glided away from the group, turning to the group and digging the blade of your skate into the ice to bring you to a stop, not noticing as someone else came into the facility.

“Ready?” Jason heard someone call. His attention immediately drawing to the center of the rink, seeing the same girl that had bumped into him and Roy earlier. Jason had gone with him because Roy asked him to pick up Lian, Roy wanted to make sure that there wouldn’t be any trouble with Jay getting her.

However, he recognized you from somewhere, but he just couldn’t place it. He watched as you stuck the pick of your skate into the ice. Having his attention he leaned against the barrier of the rink, watching your every move. He was completely captivated.

Witnessing as you pushed yourself forward, building momentum before pushing off and doing two full rotations, landing on one foot you used the momentum from landing to repeat the motion, and pushing off the third time you went into a double axel adding another half spin after the first two. All before landing graceful on one blade again and halting yourself.

“Whoa!” he heard the group of kids say in awe by you. But he had to admit, he was pretty in awe by you as well. He’d never seen anything so graceful, and he has an acrobat for a brother. Though he wasn’t expecting for you to look over. His blue eyes met with your [e/c] hues, and he couldn’t help but smile at you. Seeing a blush cross your face as you sheepishly smiled at the ice and skated over to the group.

His eyes didn’t come off of you, watching as you talked with Lian’s instructor. Finding your every move enchanting. It wasn’t until a certain ‘niece’ of his came running over.

“Uncle Jay! Uncle Jay!” she squealed running up to him. “Hey kiddo” he sweeped her up into a hug, missing the endearing look he was currently being given by you. “Did you have fun?”

“Yes! You have to meet Ms. [F/n] she’s so nice! And and she’s a professional ice skater! Can we please stay and watch her practice?” She begged, having heard your conversation with [Fd/n].

He simply smiled and nodded, Liam surprised she wouldn't have to give him puppy dog eyes.

And In fact Lian had heard you right. Like everyday, there is no time to take a break.

“You really shouldn’t overwork yourself like this.” [Fd/n] said watching you stretch your shoulders. Scoffing and rolling your eyes, “You sound like my mother.” A laugh escaping your throat. “If I can get this move mastered, there’s no way I won’t qualify!”

“What is this move?” She cocked an eyebrow at you, a curious look on her face. Turning to her on your skates, you stood proud before saying “A quadruple lutz spin.”

Her jaw dropped to the ice, “You would be the first woman to do that!”

“I know, that’s why I’ve been training so hard, I’m trying to master it!” Smiling at her, she let out a sigh. “Fine I won’t nag you but, be careful please. I have to go to my other job but the rink is yours”

“Thank you [Fd/n], let’s do this again” pulling her into a hug. She returned it smiling “Yeah, yeah, I’m the best” she muttered, making you laugh. After waving goodbye to her you set to work. Oblivious to the two sets of eyes watching you.

Jason and Lian were the only ones left in the area, Lian watched your every move. She watched as you would push off make a few rotations before hitting the ice again, half the time landing on your ass. Jason was impressed with your perseverance, after a calming breath or two you’d be back on your feet, ready to give it another go. It’s admirable. Though it was beginning to get late and Jason had to get Lian home to Roy before he got back from a mission he had with Oliver.

“Lian we should go soon” ruffling the girl’s black locks. “Noooo” she whined, whipping around to look at him. “Lian I have to get you home before your dad gets back” Jason reasoned. The girl simply crossed her arms and pouted, “We can stay a few more minutes” he gave in with a sigh.

Looking back over, he saw you going at it for another time. Though on the way down the pick of your skate got caught on the ice, watching as you tried to stop yourself with your arm before you fell full force on your wrist.

Hearing a dreadful popping noise, pain shot through your wrist and up your arm, “Son of a!” you yelled clutching it. Looking at your wrist, seeing it contorted in all the wrong ways. “Fucking fantastic” you mumbled laying your head back on the ice.

“Hey are you alright?!” a deeper voice yelled from the stands. Looking over you saw Lian and the man you locked eyes with earlier. “I-I don’t think so” calling back while sitting up and cradling your injured wrist. “Can you get out on your own?” he questioned again. Nodding you got to your feet before skating over to the door. The duo meeting you there and opening it for you.

Sitting down on a chair Jason kneeled in front of you. “Lian can you run and get some ice please?” she looked at him before nodding and running off toward the ice machine.

“Here let me see” holding his hand out, voice gentle. But he grimaced upon seeing it, examining the injury carefully. “What’s your name?” you asked, watching as his eyes trailed up to yous. “Jason Todd, you?”

“[F/n] [L/n]” smiling at him. Nodding his head, “Ah so you’re Miss [F/n].” Chuckling you answered “That I am” before he returned to your wrist, touching one spot making you jump from a jolt of pain “ow!”

“Sorry, I just- I was seeing if it was dislocated. It’s dislocated.” meeting your eyes again. “You need to go to the hospital”

He was standing in front of you now. Sighing you nodded, “Thank you” leaning down to untie your skates. Noticing as he ran over to your bag and grabbed your things before bringing them over. Throwing your skates in the bag before pulling on your tennis shoes. But realizing you couldn’t tie them with your hand.

Without a moment's hesitation Jason kneeled down and swiftly tied the laces. Leading you to thank him for what felt like the thousandth time. Finding him very sweet and caring, not to mention attractive. Just look at that jawline.

“I got the ice!” Lian yelled running over with the item, snapping you out of your thoughts. Smiling you took it from her, “and thank you Lian”

“Let's get you to the hospital.” Jason nodded his head toward the door, standing up you went to grab your bag. “No keep the ice on your wrist, I’ll carry that.” snatching up your bag before you could even respond. Lian giggled, “My Uncle Jay has good reflexes and is fast”

You smiled at her “Oh really?” She nodded smiling widely. Then going on to tell multiple stories about Jason, during the entire ride to the hospital. Jason couldn’t get a single word in, just chuckling at her constant talking.

When walking into the ER the nurse’s eyes widened at the sight of your wrist. She pushed you to the top of the list and got your paperwork done. Before you knew it, you were in a hospital room with Jason and Lian. Lian having fallen asleep in the chair in the corner.

“She’s a cutie” nodding to the girl. He chuckled, “Yeah, my friend sure can make’em”

“Thank you for all of this Jason, it means a lot” turning more to face him, keeping the ice on your wrist. “No problem, can’t just leave Lian’s hero to suffer from a dislocated wrist can I?” the smirk prevalent in his tone. “Guess not” you shrugged.

You went on chatting for a good while before the doctors returned with the results on your x-rays. Much to your luck and relief it wasn’t a serious dislocation. They would have to sedate you to put it back in place and you’d need a cast though. But they could start preparations to put you under as soon as possible.

Jason noticed your whole demeanor relax tremendously. “Everything okay?”

“Yeah, I’m just really happy it’s not too serious. Man if it was my foot or something, who knows what would happen? Might have even jeopardized my Olympics chances” letting a sigh escape after the sentence. “You’re going to be in the Olympics?!” Jason’s eyes widened in disbelief. Giggling you answered, “I don’t know yet but I’m eligible, just need to qualify”

“That’s amazing, you’re amazing!” Losing control of his own mouth for a moment. The words making you both blush.

“Um, hey what do you say when you get the cast and I drop off Lian, we go get some dinner?” he offered with confidence but you could sense some meekness or nervousness in his demeanour. You smiled, feeling butterflies in your stomach “Yeah, I’d like that a lot.”

He beamed at you before nodding, both of you not having noticed Lian had awoken. “Uncle Jay is going on a date with Miss [F/n]!” she yelled excited, the both of your whipping around to see her bright eyed and bushy tailed.

You looked at each other before bursting out laughing. Perhaps Lian has a new aunt coming her way in the future.

I had reservations about doing this reaction post but I’m watching the NBC mini-promos for everyone (cue lil’ kid saying that Javi is his ONLY hero <3) competing tonight and all the feels flooding in.

Also gonna put my dream podium out there in advance so I can lay claim to my fantasies before they possibly flop: Yuzu, Nathan, Javi (in that order for Gold, Silver, and Bronze), but ofc the best scenario is that everyone skates well and leaves the ice happy and the gremlin judges can do whatever. I haven’t watched a lot of the earlier-group men this season, but looking at their music choices I’m pretty excited for Julian Zhi Jie Yee’s Build a Home program (P/C’s 2016 FS from Euros that year still sticks with me) and hopefully Yaroslav hits his 4F. Just writing out everyone’s name is getting me hella nervous
