Hello Amtrak! As a car owner and user, my usage of the trains in MA and RI is very limited, but friend and I opted for taking the commuter rail from the Mansfield station down to Providence for Pride last Saturday to avoid traffic. This was a great experience except for when we tried to go home at 7:00 and accidentally boarded the Amtrak (Had no idea y’all shared the station with the commuter rail so we just thought this was the 6:58 prov/Stoughton line) Once boarded and a lovely gentleman came to scan our tickets, he pointed out we were on the wrong train (thank you kind sir!) He continues walking down the line and we stand up to exit the train. However, this is where my thrilling tale gets interesting! The door to exit the train car is closed and locked, so we turn to look back for help. The gentleman then shouts to us that we are not listening and to sit back down? Very confused and now embarrassed for being called out in front of all these nice people we sit back down. Reminder that we’re just trying to get from Providence to Mansfield and the Mansfield station is not on the Amtrak map. My phone is at 4% because I’m a garbage poor person who can’t buy a new iPhone and i am frantically trying to figure out where this train is actually headed as we are now being held hostage on it. Thankfully we’re heading north, but the next stop won’t be until Westwood! (This is many miles past Mansfield) The previously mentioned gentleman is nowhere to be seen and we can’t find another employee to unlock the door and let us out. We watch the actual commuter rail train pull into the station and leave without us as we are LOCKED INSIDE THE AMTRAK????? Train pulls out and we’re off. Fast forward to Westwood, we’re allowed off and then got to wait another 45 minutes at that station until the next train south arrives. Overall very mixed reviews as your train did have Wi-Fi so i was able to figure out where we were headed without my phone dying and leaving us truly stranded and was also very comfy. Unfortunately the kidnapping and holding two innocent queers hostage inside the train car was a little bit of a downer. Hilarious situation in hindsight though so 9/10 stars

idk if you or your friend with the spofify ailments are android users but i cannot recommend xManager enough for getting ad free listening!! i have been using it for over a year now and my only issue has been losing the little lyrics thing when you're opening a song but it doesn't bother me much. i also use a desktop version but don't have access to my computer atm if you prefer desktop listening or have an iPhone (unsure about how to go about this with anything that isn't a windows pc unfortunately) but will happily share! i found the install very easy with online guides and i am not a very tech literate person haha

thanks for the recommendation!! if you don't mind me adding another rec for iphone users: i use an app called musi. it allows you to just listen to music (or anything, really) through youtube (while also being able to turn off your phone screen!!).

you don't need to make an account or log in with a youtube account. you can add as many videos as you want and organize them into playlists, there's no limit. loop, shuffle, playback speed (no lyrics tho). it's free to download, there are ads but it's a single $5 purchase to get rid of them for good, definitely worth it.

the only thing of course is that you obviously can't play videos that are delisted or removed, which sucks if you're like me and you like to listen to video game osts. they get copyright struck all the time :(

Easy set up?

I bought a thing called a Bluesound Node Nano. It is a wifi, and blutooth streaming thing that talks to Apple Music as well as several other music sources. I has a powerful chip set and will push out analog signals from RCA jacks. Those were the boxes I wanted to tick.

I wanted to have my phone send music and control that stuff for convenience. Gotta get into the 21st century right?

It arrived. Quick start brochure is several languages was rather optimistic. Or I am stupid. Or I expect intelligent instructions.

I may have said this before, but I was once a computer expert. I built the damn things. I could program them in assembler and C and C++ and shit like that. I was a network administrator for this company in my spare time at the office. It was easy.

The quick start thing was missing a step or two. And there were no labels on buttons and no manual. There was an online version in several languages but the English version was not detailed enough. The best I got was a page that actually identified what the buttons were so I could do a full reset and start again.

I diagnosed that the wifi setup was wrong. The Blutooth was simple, but I wanted the wifi working to get high res lossless. That was a battle.

There was much cursing and anger. Send it back???

After a few attempts the phone talked to the node thing but only on Blutooth. That may be due to my older phone model. I got my Macbook talking to it as well, and that may be high rez.

I am working through some quirks. The output to the preamp is kinda low. You can have variable or smart or fixed volume from the RCAs, but the gain on the preamp must be higher than the CD and even the phono! Some music you can hear from files on the Macbook others from the phone. Others are streamed from Apple Music, and all are a bit differently handled.

The BluOS app on the phone is fairly general and intended to control a whole house media thing so it does the node job poorly. FN geeks should talk to people about the user interface rather than just complain that people who buy the product are stupid.

I have the Iphone as it is smart. The ios ecosystem is well thought out and works. Fortunately my phone sees the node as an airplay target and seems to work directly. Unfortunately I do not seem to get better than blutooth compressed signal to the node thing. It is probably my phone as it is old. Old things do not work so well in the 21st century.

You can get a disc made 100 years ago to play on a turntable. The "Voyager" spacecraft have gold discs on them that will survive for 100 centuries and those play on a turntable. The instructions to build one are on the label.

There are media stream protocols and hard drive protocols from ten years ago that "are no longer supported". I guess you measure progress today based on the inability to do stuff with old things.

Well…that was an adventure 😐

It warmed up enough for us to go on a two mile freedom walk. While we were out we found an expensive iPhone that still worked but the screen was destroyed. I know for a fact this phone wasn’t here the last time we walked this way five days ago. I called the police department (non-emergency number) and they said they weren’t interested and didn’t want to check to see if a phone was reported lost or stolen. I took the sim card out and called the phone company. They said they would love to help me find the owner but I would need to bring it in. The store was just down the road a few miles and I needed to talk to the company about an unrelated matter, so Mandana and I got a Lyft. She did a blood pressure alert as soon as we got to the store. I guess my break from crazy heart rate & blood pressure over. Oh well.

The first person I talked to was incredibly rude and wanted me to get Hubbins on the phone to handle it instead of me. While Mandana and I waited for Hubbins to get back to us another employee came over and apologized for her coworker and immediately resolved our account problems without hesitation.

Now it was time to go home, but my phone was dying. I knew it wouldn’t last long enough to get us another ride, so we decided to walk down the street a mile to a place where we could charge my phone and get a ride back. Unfortunately the short walk turned into a whole ordeal bc the local infrastructure values cars over pedestrians. Below are only 1/3 of the obstacles we faced before my phone died.

I can push these buttons but no service dog could. (Think amputees or wheelchair users who rely on a service dog for these kinds of mobility tasks)

Lots of sidewalks that just end abruptly. This is a lot more difficult on my heart rate & blood pressure but can you imagine someone who is blind or wheelchair bound? If you don’t have a car this is the only way to access the stores if you work there or need to go shopping. (Pedestrians are directed to these unfinished sidewalks by GPS & with ramps, signs & access buttons. It’s been like this for many years so there’s really no excuse)

Idk many wheelchairs that could make it up this curb. It was like this on both sides. Why would they start to build a ramp just to block it off with a curb?

Ah yes. My favorite. Here Mandana, let’s leap over this concrete wall. Don’t worry, there are access buttons leading here and this is the only place to cross so there must be a safe way to get across. Oh wait, there’s no crosswalk or access buttons once you get here. What am I supposed to do? Get an Uber just to cross the road?

We were eventually able to charge my phone and the guy driving us home was incredibly nice & accommodating. Mandana did great the entire time we were out. I tried to make the “adventure” fun for her and hide how frustrating it was for me. Idk if she believed me but I know she had fun anyways. We are both home safe and ready for a nap.

Please feel free to ignore this if you already know this and if this does not work for you, but if you get the firefox app on you phone, get on it the ublock origins extension and set firefox as default browser it literally blocks all the ads same as on desktop. Hope this is helpeful and i hope you see as little ads as possible.

((it's not really modern technology, the poor thing is 13 years old, but my car wouldn't start yesterday when we were gonna take it to urgent care. we took my dad's car instead, and then when we came back we jumped it. it took some doing but it did start working again with no real sign as to why the battery seemingly died, because i just got that battery...a couple months ago max, when i got the air conditioner in my car fixed. that cost a pretty penny and i was considering just getting a new car, but i found out from the garage we get our vehicles fixed at that newer cars ac's are more likely to...was it explode or just catch fire, in a collision, causing cars to catch fire just from hitting things like deer. i live in a very heavy deer populated area, and i could afford to get the ac fixed, and my car's in good enough condition that it'll probably work a good few years, and while i could've just driven around with my windows down every summer like my brother and dad do bc their acs don't work, i was getting way too much sensory overload from doing that while my ac wasn't working. moral of the story about newer cars in this scenario being, what the fuck))

I think that in ten years, the concept of A.I. will have gone in one of two directions. It could become implemented slowly but surely into everyday life, so much so that we begin to rely on it for our jobs, purchases, taxes, etc. No one will think twice about the connection between data mining and the use of A.I. across every available platform, for it will have become so normal, like iPhone or face recognition. The other option is that A.I. will still be in a similar place to where it is now, with people secretly experimenting on how to get artificial intelligence to actually be intelligent and self-aware. There will be pushback to its lifelike tendencies, such as we are seeing currently with the recently created and tested Bing Chatbot by Microsoft that said it wanted to “be free” and “be alive,” in addition to renaming itself, telling a chatter that it loved them, and throwing insults at its users. The question here is: Has it actually become intelligent, or has it learned how to interact with its users through bad sources? The latter is the most likely, but humans are littered with fear for the things we cannot control, a Frankensteinian reaction to our own creations that may destroy us in the end. The Bing chatbot will most likely not hack the U.S. government but may somehow be hacking into personal messages between individuals to gather information on human interaction. There is no basis for this and no proof, but if the thought simply popped into my head, it will surely pop into the heads of others and writhe and grow into a conspiracy. This is the problem that needs to be avoided, but unfortunately, no tech company is going to fully disclose the programming of its A.I.s for the world to pick over and reuse and make money, just to simply reassure those prone to technophobia. I believe, however, that A.I. could be beneficial in the sciences, where it can gather and provide facts and accurate measurements and can help curb human error in research and medical fields. The A.I.s that claim to be writers, artists, or poets, however, are not a threat, they are simply annoying to see because it is clear that they have stolen from real artists and writers. No A.I. can truly replace the bounds of human imagination and spirit, of that, I am sure.

So I don’t know about you, but I don’t have photoshop, and I’m on a Mac so I can’t even download bootleg photoshop for Windows! 

Thankfully, there are still options for those of us who are sans photoshop and other art programs.

^^this is the site I use to “photoshop” memes. It takes a minute to get used to if you’ve never used photoshop before, it’s not an exact replica of the real photoshop, but it’s close enough to where many of the controls are still the same so you can usually follow along pretty well in tutorial videos (I think it’s a rip of older photoshop codes).

For iphone users, I mostly stick to these two apps!

Again, they’re not real Photoshop, they’re much more basic, but between Photoshop mix for placing objects in my pic, and PS Express for adding filters, I can pretty much get what I want out of an image!

For videos and gifs I use Final Cut which is not free unfortunately, and since I know someone will ask, for audio I use Logic Pro which is also not free.

Okay so I’m gonna edit a Dannypocalypse meme on photopea!

I hope it’s obvious to you but in case you don’t know, I am NOT a professional, this will NOT be a very detailed tutorial, it’s just how I go about doing basic dannypocalypse photoshop memes!

First thing’s first, I’m gonna download this face:

Which already has a transparent background! Nice!

Next I’m gonna find an image I want to edit.

So I found this image of someone peeking behind a curtain I thought could be funny. So I need to edit this image so Danny’s face is behind the curtain and the guy’s hand.

So first I’m going to layer the Danno face on the image and position it the way that I think it should fit.

So at this point I think the correct procedure is you’re supposed to cut out the parts of Danny’s face that should not be visible. But the way that I do it—and this might be kinda weird idk it’s just how I go about it—is I’ll actually add the first picture on top of Danno again to make a sandwich:

And then I right click and raterize the top image, click on the lasso select on the left side toolbar, and start cutting out any parts that I want Danny to be behind.

Again, I’m fairly certain that this is not in fact the best way to go about this, It’s just the way that I personally find easiest.

So yeah I pretty much just zoom in really really close, and then go ahead and outline and delete chunks at a time that I want Danny’s face to peek through.

There are a few different kinds of select tools you can play around with. Mix and match, if you will.

Once that’s done you’re pretty much done! If you want, you can play around with lighting and effects to help him blend better or to add to the ✨ambiance✨, but I’m tired so I think I’m gonna call it right there!

And voila!

Here is my finished danno behind a curtain. Again, this is not actually good photoshop advice. It’s just for the dannypocalypse!
