So I decided to put on the hit television show Our Flag Means Death, again, for the first time in a bit, and I'm thinking about those two flashbacks in 1x2 of Stede with Mary and the kids.

There has been this question, which one is "true", and I don't know, still, if I have an answer to that, but I have a new (to me) insight about what that second one means, to Stede's inner narrative. Because he's crying, and then there's this scene of him with his family, happy and engaged, and then he says "my family's here now, at sea." Which feels like - he's letting go of the idea of the happy family on land that he could have had, or wanted, or was trying to believe in, etc - envisioning it one last time in order to let it go. That whatever that was, it doesn't exist now, and can't exist in the future.

And then we immediately cut to him doing this incredibly dad thing, reading aloud to the crew, and looking genuinely happy and engaged doing it.

Also, the foreshadowing about how climate change is going to be relevant in the story. The fact that Libby likely did change the very structure of medeian advancements, and progression of the entire global economy with the nuclear blast she set off. She may change it even further depending on what she does in the Alexandrian Society.

okay hear me out here: antigone au with charley and c’rizz where she’s doomed for burying him. c’rizz is dead and he’s charley’s brother and she’s not going to just leave him there because he’s her brother and she’s doomed because she’s always doomed (antigone will always chose to bury her brother and charley will always chose to run off on some adventure) and the doctor is haemon because if antigone (charley) is doomed then he is too. rassilon is creon bc he’s more concerned with bending the story to his will than he is to anything else and they’re all doomed. they're all doomed

I need neil josten to chew somebody out again like he did with riko so vehemently, no mercy to be found, he was locked and loaded within seconds. He took one look at riko and decided to ruin his ENTIRE LIFE without hesitation. I miss it. The antagonism of it all. Neil "I have a bit of an attitude problem" Josten was not only there to play stupid games, he was there to win those stupid prizes. And he sure won those stupid prizes and more.

I feel like we, as a society, are sleeping on how funny Sklonda Gukgak is as a character. yes, yes, she's amazing and heartbreaking and I would die for her. we all know it. let's talk about how she is objectively fucking hilarious.

she's a single mom. she instituted a minimum four hour nightly sleep for her son, completely ignoring the fact that her son got his sleep and coffee habits from her. she took a hard left from police work into public defense, but kept her gun and goes to active crime scenes with her son and his friend. they mentioned one (1) time that she was dating a devil who is easily ten times the size of her entire body. this fact is never brought up again. she loves her son's friends, but does not like or trust any of them. despite this, she 100% went on vacation with them and all their parents. she laments her son's relentless and self-destructive work ethic right before conking out on the kitchen table at 3am. she helped her kid eat a dragon.

this woman is as feral as they come. she's hilarious. I adore her. 11/10, Brennan. no notes.

forever thinking about royal’s bad ending. my thing with it is that maruki doesn’t necessarily give anyone what they want most, he gives them what’s most appropriate for them to want within a maruki-approved framework. iirc there’s a really interesting text sequence in the game where he just straight up changes someone’s career because they’re not “good” at it, regardless of whether that’s what they actually want. why struggle at all? ever? right?

and so ultimately i don’t think goro akechi’s greatest wish is necessarily ren. i think it’s a wish for sure, but his greatest wish is his own agency. despite any regrets he has and the fact that shido and yaldabaoth treated him like a pawn, he's generally pretty adamant about owning his choices and their consequences. he doesn't want that erased. and instead, you end up with pleasant boy™ if you take maruki’s deal. maybe maruki (incorrectly) thinks sanding off all of akechi’s rough edges will make him easier for ren to love. but the crux of it is really that maruki has to essentially lobotomize him to preserve the illusion of his perfect reality, because their ideologies are so diametrically opposed that akechi would spend every waking moment fighting back.

this isn’t to undermine ren’s importance to akechi btw — he explicitly acknowledges that he wishes they had met earlier, and there are countless moments throughout their confidant that underscore how much it means to him that they mirror each other so well. he absolutely does want more time with ren, just not under these circumstances.

and that’s also what makes ren’s choice on 2/2 doubly devastating. he knows that either way he loses akechi. and if he takes maruki’s deal, he loses him knowing that his last moments with the real akechi involved the two of them being unforgivably out of sync.

Thinking about Illario's fight, where Lucanis says "I'll kill you for that!" if he gets a good hit on Rook.

Thinking about, what if, on that good hit, Illario gives Rook a scar.

Thinking about Lucanis feeling so confused and hurt and angry at Illario, the closest family member he has, the one who shares so many of the same mental and physical scars as Lucanis, hurting someone who has accepted all of his. All of him. Someone whose mere presence starts to make a few hurt less.

Thinking about Lucanis' fear of not being able to protect the ones he loves most embodied all by that scar.

Thinking about that fear spiralling when Rook gets taken to the Regret prison. In the rare times he sleeps, he dreams of that scar and the others that may follow.

Thinking about the relief that comes with saving Rook and their night together. When they're asleep, he stares at that scar, tracing it with his finger.

Thinking about how he wonders what new mental scars they may have from the Regret prison that he could've saved them from. The old ones Solas made that he never noticed.

Thinking about how he wasn't able to protect them from his cousin, he barely got them back from the Regret prison, and now he has to watch them go fight gods and possibly make more. Hurt more. He can't fail this time. He can't bear to see them with another scar.
