I should be doing my APUSH work right now but if I have to read one more sentence about Columbus I will tear out my own eyeballs so-

Summer Camp AU

feat. Dream Team, BBH, Sleepy Bois, Tommy and Tubbo, Fundy and Eret

DREAM

One of the boy’s cabins counselors, helps out at the waterfront sometimes

Has this white snapback hat with a black smiley face embroidered on the front, refuses to take it off, somehow never gets dirty

Also this lime green sweatshirt, he wears it around his waist if it gets too hot though

Often paired with George as co-counselors, they’re absolutely chaotic together but surprisingly good at leading the campers, they’ve got the whole play-fighting dynamic going on and nobody is really sure if they’re dating or not, they wear each other’s clothes so often they just share a dresser at this point

Whenever there’s a spider or a bug in the cabin Dream is the designated one to kill it (or take it outside)

Actually really close friends with Techno but they have a whole fake rivalry going on at camp for the ✨ drama ✨ (not really, they just got in an argument once and it spread across the entire camp, now it’s basically just part of camp lore that they’re ‘enemies’)

They play it up a ton at camp events and team games, but they almost always sneak out to the docks at midnight after and talk for hours

Dream and Sapnap together almost always means trouble

They’ve been friends for as long as anyone can remember

The shenanigans they get up to usually ends with them both on kitchen duty

Loves climbing trees?? Can be found just chilling in trees sometimes

Known for being a really cool camp counselor though, intimidatingly tall and won’t hesitate to step in when breaking up a fight or disagreement, has a way with kids

GEORGE

Also a boy’s counselor

George has these awful white sunglasses he won from an arcade on a staff trip, nobody has ever seen him without them, he wears them on his face when he’s in a bad mood (only Dream can talk to him without being ignored when this happens)

George is known for being a stickler for the rules, but surprisingly he’s often the counselor who starts the annual prank war, he somehow managed to dye Dream’s hair bright green in his sleep once

A bit awkward with the campers, but he loosens up around Dream and Sapnap

Constantly steals Dream’s green sweatshirt

Makes Dream and Sapnap friendship bracelets once, is a flustered mess when he gives the bracelets to them, muttering excuses about them looking terrible because he’s colorblind, Dream and Sapnap wear them on their wrists at all times (even though the colors clash just a little bit)

SAPNAP

Also a boy’s counselor, hosts the game nights in the main lodge every week

Has a white bandana tied around his forehead, Dream yanks it down over his eyes sometimes and they end up chasing each other around the camp for hours (and then they end up on kitchen duty, obviously)

KING of the ropes course

Spends most of his time there, actually

Ends up in the infirmary more times than he probably should after trying to do obstacles blindfolded or without a harness

Can and will carry a grudge for months on end

References a meme or vine every other sentence

Unironically wears crocs

Starts water balloon fights with Dream every opportunity he gets

Yells ‘parkour’ every time he does something cool on the ropes course, even if it’s not actually parkour

Loves giving out hugs, very physically affectionate, will sling his arm around your shoulders or punch you gently on the arm

Wrestles with Dream

Which leads to kitchen duty

BBH

In charge of sports/archery/rifle range

One of the nicest counselors, always chides the other staff (and campers, sometimes,) for cursing, helps out in the infirmary whenever he can

Campers trust him with their secrets, he knows a little bit about almost everyone but he’d never let any of it slip, he’s well aware of how important it is to the campers to have someone they can absolutely trust

Helps sort out disagreements between campers, he’s probably the best one with kids

Scarily good with a gun, holds most of the top camp records

Constantly reminding people to wear sunscreen, carries around three different types in his bag

Also a bunch of individually wrapped muffins, he gives them to campers if they want a snack

Definitely the worst at telling ghost stories

Has a lot of survival skills, will teach campers how to tie ten different types of knots in his free time

Only one who consistently wears his staff t-shirt

WILBUR

Everyone’s favorite counselor, at least according to him

Often paired with Techno

Grey beanie for the aesthetic, but also because his hair is absolutely a mess and if he shoves a hat on it it immediately looks better

Carries his guitar with him most of the time

Went through the ropes course one time with his guitar on him because of a dare

Really good at telling scary stories, but usually plays campfire songs on his guitar instead (sometimes with a kazoo if he’s in the right mood)

Absolutely torches his marshmallows and insists it’s the only right way to eat them, once ate a flaming marshmallow whole (for fun, apparently)

Coffee addict

Pretty much spends the entirety of breakfast at the coffee table

When Wilbur was a CIT he gets this black bandana from Philza, he never wears it but keeps it tied around his bed frame every summer, until one staff campfire when Tommy is a CIT. They’re all sitting around a fire and singing and joking around and Tommy surprises Wilbur when he knows all of the lyrics to one of Wilbur’s songs, and Wilbur impulsively gives Tommy the bandana (Tommy makes a joke about how it’s ‘rather plain, innit?’, Wilbur rolls his eyes and punches him on the arm, they both know how much it means to Tommy though)

Kind of sarcastic, mean in a nice way

TECHNO

Technically a counselor but nobody knows where he is most of the time

Has pastel pink hair and will 100% help kids dye their hair too, but not before a long lecture about bleach damage and regret

Also a pink face mask (for fashion), only takes it off to eat or swim

The best at making friendship bracelets, it gives him something to do with his hands

Teaches the campers how to make friendship bracelets in the art cabin

Gives his closest friends a pink and black friendship bracelet (it’s not confirmed to be him, they just show up on your bed overnight, but everybody knows it’s Techno)

One legendary summer, Dream and Techno were paired as camp counselors for a cabin, the campers from that year all have matching pink and green bracelets, there’s still whispers about what went down then

A god at toasting his marshmallows to perfection, golden and crispy on all sides with just the right amount of melting

Gets the best care packages from home (so many cookies!!)

TOMMY

CIT with Tubbo

Only his second year at camp, but he hit it off really well with all the other staff and Philza so they offered him a position as CIT

(which he accepted, obviously)

Likes to claim it’s for all the free stuff and staff perks but secretly really wants to learn how to be a good counselor

Curses like a sailor though

BBH has to threaten to take away his access to the staff coffee table to get him to stop cursing as much around the campers

Chaotic gremlin, probably shouldn’t be put in charge of children

He’s actually very responsible when he needs to be though, likes to joke around a lot but looks out for the campers as much as possible

Self-proclaimed king of the gaga pit

Seriously, can hit the ball so hard he’s bruised some people a couple of times

Always covered in scratches and bruises and bandaids

A little too eager to throw a punch

Has a black bandana (from Wilbur) and wears it around his neck at all times, keeps it as clean as possible (even when he’s covered in dirt from various scuffles the bandana somehow stays clean)

Goes absolutely ham on a kazoo during sing alongs

Him and Tubbo sneak out one night and take a paddleboard out to the middle of the lake to look at the stars, the only reason they get caught is because Tommy falls off as they paddle back to shore, Philza yells at them for ten minutes straight but it’s worth it

Basically never wears his staff shirt

TUBBO

Also a CIT

Has been going to the camp for years

Brings his ukulele with him, sometimes he plays with Wilbur at campfires, loves sitting on the dock and playing random little tunes for the campers

Hangs out at the waterfront a lot

Volunteers for kitchen duty, surprisingly

He actually really likes cooking and hanging out with Fundy, whenever he and Bad are in the kitchen together they make muffins

Makes flower crowns!! Absolutely vibes while sitting in the fields, loves the bees, teaches campers how to weave flowers together

Lets Tommy drag him off into all of his shenanigans

Is definitely the type to laugh off insults

Very, very hard to anger but when he gets mad, he gets mad

He and Tommy have only had one disagreement ever at camp, it started with a screaming match for an hour at the waterfront, they ended up not talking for days. Wilbur’s never seen Tommy that quiet, and Eret watches Tubbo with concern when he just sits on the dock for hours, not moving. One night Tommy shows up at Wilbur’s cabin, covered in scrapes and blood in the pouring rain, he just starts crying and Wilbur carries him to the infirmary before finding Tubbo, the two finally talk for a couple of hours after BBH bandages up Tommy’s wounds, the next day they’re back to talking and laughing and causing chaos together like nothing ever happened

Tubbo still feels guilty about that

Loves hanging out with the campers, everyone is excited for when he’s an actual counselor

Wears his staff shirt most of the time, but it’s under his green flannel so you can’t really tell anyway

PHILZA

Camp director obviously

Basically a tired dad, wears a green and white bucket hat, has a fanny pack and will use it

Curses a lot but hides it from the campers

Constantly reminding everyone to wear their staff shirts even if nobody listens to him

Loves telling the campers embarrassing stories about Wilbur and Techno as often as he can

When giving Tommy a tour of the camp to prepare for being a CIT Tommy somehow manages to climb onto the roof of the dining hall, Philza has to hide his laughter while yelling at him to come down

Tommy just stands and yells “POGCHAMP” as loudly as he can, Wilbur records it on his phone and makes sure to send it to all the staff in the group chat

Refers to Wilbur and Techno as his ‘sons’

And eventually Tommy too

Also references vines and memes

ERET

Waterfront manager/lifeguard

Really chill vibes

Also makes pride friendship bracelets for the campers!! It’s kind of a tradition, if you come out to him you get a bracelet

You also can get a bracelet if you ask for one

Has a whistle, loves to sneak up on the other counselors and blow it as loud as he can

Brings a lawn flamingo to camp every year and stakes it outside of his cabin

Really close with Tubbo

Helps Bad in the infirmary sometimes

Also hangs out with Sapnap at the ropes course, loves climbing the rock wall and sitting on the top

One of the best counselors to go to for advice, along with BBH

BUDDY SYSTEM OR ELSE

You better have your buddy when he blows his whistle twice

Tubbo helps him organize the swim tests and give everyone the appropriate tag to hang on the buddy board

FUNDY

Fundy absolutely cannot be trusted as a counselor, so Philza sticks him in the kitchen as head of the kitchen crew

Fundy doesn’t actually mind, he doesn’t have to do much and he gets access to all of the snacks

Extremely chaotic when handing out snacks to the campers- sometimes he throws them, sometimes he just dumps them out into a pile on the ground, sometimes he hands them out individually, there’s no way to predict it

Needs at least 8 hours of sleep or several cups of coffee before he’s ready to interact with campers

Very sarcastic

Plays piano in the main hall sometimes

Bullies Tommy with Wilbur

A picture of him in a fox costume surfaced in the staff group chat and now everybody calls him a ‘furry’

He hates it

So much

Capture the flag games that go for days on end, Dream and George captaining a team against Wilbur and Techno, spies and sabotage and elaborate heists, Eret betraying his team during one of the games, water balloon skirmishes, color war but Intense Mode

Prank wars between the counselors and campers

Building epic pillow forts in the cabins and the counselors sneaking in snacks even though there’s not supposed to be food in the cabins

Just, so many possibilities

The Truth Will Set You Free by loveandbeloved (~35k)

Zayn wakes up the next day to the news that Liam has taken on the case of the kid, to oppose Zayn and prove that he isn’t a killer.

To say he’s pissed beyond belief goes without saying, but somehow he thinks that he should’ve seen this coming.

Or A Lawyer AU in which I accidentally made Ziam detectives as well and they solve crimes and figure out their feelings.

Genetic engineering in humans, though declared illegal worldwide, wasn’t always forbidden. In fact, Zayn is a living example - wings sprouting from his back and an infinite number of languages ready for use on his quick, tongue. Zayn prefers to be on his own. It's easier to survive when you don't have to worry about anyone else. Liam leads a large group of people that have taken residence in an abandoned prison. When Zayn wakes up in a prison cell, all he can think about is finding a way out. Liam makes him want to stay.

Zayn isn't normal for two reasons. One, he's a warlock. Two, he's Crown Prince of said warlocks. Witches too, actually. Not Wizards though. Those imbeciles give magic a bad name. Especially the one named Liam. He's particularly awful. It's too bad that they end up falling in love. Through centuries of war, revolution, art and innovation; Zayn tries to stay away from Liam, until he can't.

From Hanyou no Yashahime — Sesshomaru and Rin

From The Mandalorian — The Mandomera’s been creeping up a little bit.

B - A pairing–platonic, romantic or sexual–that you initially didn’t consider, but someone changed your mind.

Honestly can’t think of one. I’m very set in my ships.

C - A ship you have never liked and probably never will.

From Naruto — SasuSaku. Sasuke was cute as a kid so I get Sakura having a crush on him then, but I think she would have gotten over it when he became a homicidal clown who abandoned the village and tried to kill her and her teammates multiple times.

From Harry Potter — Ron x Hermione. I’ve always thought their personalities didn’t match and not in the good “opposites attract” kind of way.

Over fifteen years in the Harry Potter fandom, but I’ve had to separate that from JKR herself in the recent years.

From The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare — Nat and Kit were my first OTP. Read this book in fifth grade and was immediately loved them. Boy literally risks banishment from the colony to help prove she’s not a witch.

H - What is your favorite source text for fandom stuff (e.g., TV shows, movies, books, anime, Western animation, etc.)?

I love visual media, so TV, anime, and film

I - Has Tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?

I’m not going to let tumblr dot com put me off of a particular show/book/etc. itself, but it has definitely made me think less of certain types of fans who are in a fandom.

J - Name a fandom you didn’t think about until you saw it all over Tumblr. (You don’t have to care about it or follow it; it just has to be something that Tumblr made you aware of.)

The...period drama fandom? More widely, the history fandom. They both create some of the most beautiful edits celebrating history and I love it.

K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?

From Avatar: The Last Airbender — It’s gotta be Prince Zuko

L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves. (Characters you’re neutral about are fair game, as are characters you merely dislike. Characters that you absolutely loathe with the fire of ten thousand suns are exempt, as there is no point in giving yourself an aneurysm over a character that you hate.)

From Harry Potter — I think Ginny is a Mary Sue but I loved when she stood up for herself in Half-Blood Prince when Ron was trying to slut-shame her.

M - Name a character that you’d like to have for a friend.

From Parks and Recreation — Leslie Knope. Unending positive affirmations, thoughtfulness, and support!

N - Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).

I don’t really have a main fandom but I haven’t mentioned Free! yet so let’s go with it for this one.

1. Less Nitori because I can’t stand him.

2. More female characters! I get half the appeal is the boys, but I’d love to see a girls swim team in some capacity.

3. More Haru and his family dynamics! Doesn’t have to be a ton, but I want to know what his relationship with his parents like, especially as an adult.

O - Choose a song at random. Which ship or character does it remind you of?

Salt and the Sea - The Lumineers. “From the destruction, out of the flame. You need a villain, give me a name.” Such an Odesta song. (Finnick x Annie from the Hunger Games)

P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas).

For The Mandalorian — A historical AU set in early 1900s New York City where Mando’s just some government agent sent to “report” on slum conditions to satisfy some housing law. He goes meaning to write up a generic report but then finds the orphaned Baby Yoda abandoned in one of the tenements. Shocked by the conditions of the slums, Mando goes from being an apathetic, middling-level bureaucrat to being an anonymous investigative journalist reporting on the corruption in the government that allows for the city’s most vulnerable citizens to live in squalor, leading the government on a search to find who within their ranks is exposing them.

Q - A fandom you’ve abandoned and why.

Sherlock, because it just took so long for the third series to come out. I had moved on to other fandoms by the time it did. Still have fond memories of when I was active in it, though.

R - Which friendship/platonic relationship is your favorite in fandom?

From Lord of the Rings — Aragorn and Legolas. This is played up a lot more in the films but I love it.

S - Show us an example of your personal headcanon (prompts optional but encouraged)

For Lord of the Rings — Boromir definitely taught Faramir swordplay when they were little kids since their father didn’t want to.

T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?

From Hanyou no Yashahime — Rin made the first move. Sesshomaru would be way too clueless to even know how to go about it.

U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.

From Pirates of the Caribbean — James Norrington: Commodore in the Royal Navy during the 18th century, must I explain any further? Cool, calm, and collected on the job while looking v good while he does it but a nervous wreck in front of the woman he fancies. Tell me that’s not straight out of Austen.

From Star Wars (OT) — Luke Skywalker: An unapologetically good person in a crapsack world, doing his best to bring light into the world. A classic hero archetype who grows out of his naïveté to become a cunning—but still benevolent—Jedi.

From Prince of Tennis — Yukimura Seiichi: His duality is *chef’s kiss*. Super scary and in charge on the court, gentle sweet boy who loves art and culture off the court. He struggled for so long but was able to overcome it all through his hard work and willpower.

Bonus favorite, because I couldn’t resist...

From Band of Brothers — Doc Roe: He’s doing the MOST for his guys but he really just needs a hug. Plus he’s got the accent.

V - Which character do you relate to most?

From Little Women — Jo March, especially as portrayed by Saoirse Ronan in the 2019 adaptation. Writer, holds grudges, opinionated, stubborn, eschewed “girliness” in her youth but is more open to it and romanticism as an adult.

W - A trope which you are virtually certain to hate in any fandom.

I’ve gotten to the point where even the hint of a love triangle tests my patience.

X - A trope which you are almost certain to love in any fandom.

It’s about the yearning: Longing Look

Y - What are your secondhand fandoms (i.e., fandoms you aren’t in personally but are tangentially familiar with because your friends/people on your dash are in them)?

I love fandom so much. I’m sort of facetious about being obsessed with people who aren’t real on my other social media accounts, but in all seriousness, being able to escape the real world to get excited over characters and relationships that face their own struggles, triumphs, and emotions is such a gift. So often they speak so powerfully on the human experience—How can you read, or watch, any of Tolkien’s work and not be moved by what he has to say about humanity and the power of good? Even if the stories are fictional, the messages they impart about life aren’t, which is what I love so much about them.

Author Name: irishpadfoot, although I started considering changing it as soon as I actually started posting fics (aka once I kind of couldn’t change it without confusing people)

Fandom You Write For: That I write for or, like, publish for? The only things I’ve published are MCU/Spiderman, but I’ve got a lot of in-progress fics in different fandoms: Spider-Man, Miraculous, Percy Jackson, Star Wars (mainly Clone Wars era), the Spellslinger Series (a criminally unknown series), my Peter Pan retelling, and I guess Peter Pan as a whole. I’d say Dragon Age (mainly Inquisition), but I’ve only got one crossover with one character involved, so idk if that counts. I’m also working on some original fiction but I have no plot, no characters, and no real world. My planning is going perfectly, as you can tell.

Where You Post: ArchiveOfOurOwn mostly, although I’ve posted some one-shots and chapter announcements on Tumblr. I vaguely remember posting a chapter of a fic on ff.net, but that was years ago and it was under a different pseudonym and no one will ever find it! (Thank God!)

Most Popular Multi-Chapter Story: Presumably, my only multi-chapter fic - The New Parker Luck or, The Plan Goes Right (Kind Of)

Favorite Story You Wrote: Probably My Favourite Destination On The Trip, because I was really hoping for a romantic confession on the Eifel Tower in the film.

Story You Were Nervous to Post: My first fic, Delayed, which I posted on Tumblr after being delayed for a flight (shocker, I know!), with practically zero editing or beta-testing. Also The New Parker Luck or, The Plan Goes Right (Kind Of), because it was my first multi-chapter story. Also most of them.

How Do You Choose Your Titles: Most of the titles for my fics and chapters are (sometimes modified) quotes from the original source (like ‘The New Parker Luck’, which is based off ‘The ol’ Parker Luck’ from the comics), or general one-word summaries of the chapter (like ‘Delayed’). Also, because I’m just that clichéd, song titles and lyrics.

How Many of Your Stories Are: Oh no

Complete: Uh, 3 1-shots (although I’m planning on turning one into a short series!), and 1 multi-chap

In-Progress: Like, three one-shots to go into a series with My Favourite Destination On The Trip. Also something (either just a one-shot, two-shot, or AU) based off the idea of Peter doing ballet. (There was this one gorgeous piece of art that inspired me, and I can’t find it for the life of me.)

Coming Soon: Oh god, too many. Wayyyy too many. I start fics as soon as I get hit by any inspiration, but never build on them, so I just have tons of scribbles. Like, ten multi-chap fics? Although ‘scribbles’ can mean, like, one scene and a vague idea, or even just a list of quotes from it. Practically? Like, four. Oh God, I forgot a ton, so I’ll just list them all. I have a Percy Jackson/Spellslinger(/DA:I?) crossover that might end up retelling the book series. I have a HTTYD retelling with Atreus from God of War. I also started a Frozen retelling with Atreus, but since I haven’t actually watched beyond the first five minutes of Frozen, that probably won’t work. I have some Spider-Man fics in the works. I have exactly two scenes of an Avatar TLA crossover. I have a Miraculous fic/crossover with one character who is heavily based off a character from another series, and I had inspiration for a His Dark Materials AU, but no idea for a plot or anything. I have two Spellslinger fics (one of which is my attempt at writing an upcoming prequel book before it comes out). Two original fictions, which have 0 planning. My Clone Wars/Force Unleashed crossover, which might end up retelling all of the episodes with an extra character or two (and hopefully end up changing things dramatically). I also have a... AU based on the fic, where things don’t change and follow canon (so, not really an AU?), which I have, like, three scenes from, but I know nothing about Star Wars: Rebels, so that will take a while. And then I have my modern Peter Pan retelling with what feels like my first truly original OCs, four major AUs, and, like, 18 one-shots based on either the retelling or the AUs.

Upcoming Story You’re Most Excited to Write: I’m trying to write more on my Peter Pan retelling which I kind of got distracted writing AUs and one-shots based off, but I need to publish the main story before I can publish my AUs and one-shots because of the characters. But I can’t finish the main story because I keep getting distracted writing AUs and one-shots. Do you see my problem??

Do You Accept Prompts: Yes, please, God, because I just need more distractions from my main stories, obviously although I’m terrible at being inspired, so it might take ages.

It turns out I do way too much retelling, and love giving myself absolutely massive challenges like rewrite a book series, or novelise and rewrite a tv show, or do all of these things at the same time while planning your future and doing uni work. Am I mentally stable? No. But am I productive? Also no. But do I feel good about my writing? Also no. Actually that’s not true, because incredible people like @spiderman-homecomeme, @spideyfic, and @bbyangst are absolutely wonderful and remind me I’m not an idiot (or that I am, but so is everyone else, so it doesn’t matter), and there’s this one absolutely amazing commenter on AO3 who single-handedly got me out of a depressive slump over my writing, and is... like, bizarrely kind and complimentary?

what eu comics would you recommend for someone who’s pretty new to the eu canon that heavily feature leia?

ooh fun question. there are obviously a lot of eu comics, all varying in writing quality and art quality. i really only read the ones with leia, and i’ve been through most of the ones i have downloaded. if you need links to any specific runs, lmk!

thrawn trilogy (1995-1998). these were originally novels, and now they’re like the cornerstone of the eu. they introduce mara jade and eventually han and leia’s twins!

dark empire trilogy (1991-1995). very eu in the sense that the writing is kinda nuts, but it’s a Classic^TM

infinities (2001-2004). okay, so. these are essentially canon aus for the original trilogy. there are five issues each for a new hope, the empire strikes back, and return of the jedi. in each one of those three, something happens that didn’t happen in the films. anh’s twist is that leia serves the empire, empire’s is that luke died on hoth, and rotj’s is that negotiations at jabba’s failed

a valentine story (2003). this will only appeal to you if you’re a hanleia fan, but it’s my guilty pleasure. it’s just one issue set right before empire in which han and leia get stuck in the falcon during a blizzard. pure fun

splinter of the mind’s eye (1995-1996). i’m telling you this now before you look for recommendations anywhere else and find this: it’s bad. it’s got hints of incest. it’s ooc for leia. the only plus is that leia has a lightsaber duel with vader

shadows of the empire (1996). up there with the thrawn trilogy in must-reads of the eu imo. leia is drawn with black lipstick in this for some reason and i don’t know why but i love it

star wars (dark horse) (2013-2014). this consists of: in the shadow of yavin, from the ruins of alderaan, rebel girl, and a shattered hope. the art is kinda wonky but it’s good reading

disclaimer: the rest of these aren’t eu, meaning they were released after disney bought star wars in 2014. but i know some people use “eu” as a catch-all for any reading material, so i’ll include some canon comics anyway!

marvel’s star wars (2015-ongoing). it’s got 50 (i think) issues right now, and it’s still running! i love these so much bc the art (for the first 30 issues anyway, now it’s atrocious) is gorgeous. i love the writing especially bc there’s so much hanleia banter and i’m a sucker for it. also here’s where aphra and sana starros were introduced!

star wars: princess leia (2015). The Leia Comic. introduced evaan verlaine, one of my faves! the art is nice too and it’s mildly gay

star wars: shattered empire (2015). this is set immediately after rotj and heavily features kes dameron and shara bey, poe’s parents! they work together w/ han, luke, and leia, and it’s a lot of fun. i love that art too

Winter

Winter hits early this year, and it hits hard. Darcy doesn't mind the snow, but not everyone agrees.

For F*ckYeahWinterShock's Winter Wonderland Ball. A patchwork of many prompts.

I wrote this all in one today and haven't even given it a read through so my bad if it's full of errors. I had to get it up before the end of December and I won't have time on New Year's Day (which it now is, since it's 2.30am). Forgive me if it shows.

Prompts at the end to avoid potential spoilers.

This is slightly Civil War AU in that everybody made up at the end and are living together in Stark Tower, like it's 2012 again or something.

Winter hits early this year, and it hits hard.

Darcy’s not about to complain: it’s her favorite season. She can do without black ice, but she’d rather be bundled up in tons of layers than sweating her ass off in the worst of summer, especially in the humidity of New York. New Mexico was a dry heat; Manhattan just soaks up all that warmth in its concrete and glass and reduces Darcy to one big glob of sweat. Air conditioning is the best invention ever, but it doesn’t exist outside where the asphalt reflects the heat back at her, or on the subway when she’s riding around in other people’s perspiration. If anybody ever questions the validity of climate change in her presence, she’s going to drown them in the puddle between her boobs.

So yeah. Darcy digs winter. She can swaddle herself in big cozy sweaters and watch the snow drift from the sky, wrapping her hands around a big mug of hot chocolate. It almost makes the move to New York worth it.

There are a few other things on that very short list of positive things. Darcy likes the city as a place to visit, but she’s not thrilled about living here. Too many people nd not enough manners. She’d have happily stayed in London (even if the Underground was a sweat-box all year round) except Jane was running out of funding and shadowy government agencies were circling. Stark Industries had offered her a secure place to continue research and a measure of protection, with a cast-iron guarantee that she’d retain ownership, and that none of her work would be used for building weapons. Darcy came along for the ride, with an actual salary this time.

The free rent, courtesy of one Tony Stark (via one Pepper Potts) is on the list of good things, especially because that free rent comes in the form of a pretty sweet apartment in Stark Tower and not a shoe box on the furthest stop on the subway.

Another is that she gets to see a lot of Bucky Barnes around the tower.

Darcy has a type, which she likes to summarize as “strong and silent”. Surprisingly few men make the cut and she’d resigned herself to it only being a movie archetype. That was, until Barnes turned up in the lab one day, to quietly sit and observe what they were doing. He likes to do that, between what Pepper makes sound like some pretty hardcore therapy sessions. He doesn’t ask questions and the other scientists confirmed it’s a common thing to see him mutely trespassing, though he will move heavy equipment around without complaint. His presence should be unnerving but he usually looks so forlorn that it’s like having a sad puppy watching you work.

When Darcy sees him around the tower—never in the midst of a group—he’s usually hunched over a book. Science is his preferred topic: A Brief History of Time or some Neil DeGrasse Tyson, so Jane starts leaving out her favorites on the end of benches in case he comes by.

So Barnes is both strong and silent, but also astonishingly pretty beneath all the hair and the beard. It’s a combination Darcy can’t resist. She has it bad.

He doesn’t seem to know she exists.

She can live with that. It’s enough to admire him from afar, since she’s sure the aforementioned hardcore therapy doesn’t make him the best prospect for romance. The guy’s been through a lot and Darcy’s not sure she’s looking for anything heavy. Besides, she’d prefer to stay on the fringes of the superhero world, which looks like one big mess from where she’s standing. There’s a lot of adventure involved, sure, but there also seems to be a whole lot of PTSD.

She greets the winter, and the first snow, with open delight, beaming at the first flakes through the window as they waft downward. They’re too far up for her to see if they settle and stick to the ground, but it’s unlikely to happen. Instead they’ll be driven over and churned up underfoot until there’s nothing left but dirty slush. She doesn’t have to see that, only the prettier side close to the sky.

It’s how Steve Rogers finds her in Tony’s workshop, where she’s been sent to fetch some notes Jane lent to him and gets distracted by the snowfall. He clears his throat to attract her attention, and she nearly jumps out of her skin when she notices who it is.

“Is Tony around?” he asks, politely pretending not to notice her reaction.

“No?” she replies, more question of her own than answer. She tries again. “He’s supposed to be, but I don’t know where he is.”

Steve follows her gaze to the falling white flecks outside. “It’s early in the year for snow.”

“Climate change,” she says with feigned authority, and he nods along with her. “I think Tony might have a plan to fix that, though.”

There’s movement behind him, and a familiar figure shuffles into the lab, sticking to the perimeter of the room while he takes in who’s in it.

“Hi, Bucky,” she greets, like she always does, and he doesn’t respond, as ever, beyond a tilt of his head which might be acknowledgment. “I think you wanna be in our room today, Jane’s about to turn on the new spectrometer. Plus she might need you to give it a whack of it’s misbehaving.”

He takes her at her word and disappears.

“You work here?” Steve asks.

“Ah yeah, I’m Jane Foster’s assistant.”

His face breaks into a grin. “So you must be Darcy!”

She gives him a confused smile in return. “Correct. How’d you know?”

“Bucky’s mentioned you.”

That earns him an eyebrow raised. She’s amazed Bucky knows her name, never mind paid enough attention to mention it to Steve. It does mean he isn’t entirely silent though, which is a good sign. The second part of her perfect man equation is not meant to be taken entirely literally.

“I’m Steve, by the way.”

“Dude, I know who you are. The whole world does.”

He’s bashful in response, and Darcy decides then and there she will treat him like she’d treat anyone else. If their paths ever cross again, of course, which isn’t all that likely.

“You want to come watch the potential fireworks in Jane’s lab?”

“No, I really do have to find Tony. And science was always more Bucky’s thing than mine. See you around?”

“Sure. So long as I don’t find out you’re the asshole who’s been stealing Pop Tarts from the lab kitchen!”

He laughs as he walks away, and since there’s no sign of Tony she returns to doing some actual work.

Turns out she sees Steve much sooner than she expected. Wherever Tony was earlier, he’s obviously in the tower, as a couple of hours later there’s a summons sent via FRIDAY for all lab staff to head to the terrace at the very top of the tower.

“This sounds ominous,” Jane murmurs, and Darcy can only agree as they summon an elevator to take them all the way up, wrapping up in coats and scarves. Bucky joins them, and the tension in his body in the small space suggests he’s expecting shit to have gone sideways too.

Tony wearing a manic smile when they reach the terrace. It’s got a decent layer of snow on it—only a foot deep, but untrodden.

“Compulsory snowman building for all lab staff!” he announces. Jane mutters something under her breath, but Darcy’s thrilled to be out of the lab for a little while.

Bucky turns right around and gets back into the elevator, disappearing before Tony can argue with him.

“Did he not hear the word compulsory?” Tony asks.

“He doesn’t work in the labs,” Darcy reminds him, already staking out a good spot to start and sculpt her snowman.

It doesn’t take long for them to be joined by people from other areas of the tower—some vaguely familiar to Darcy though she tries not to gawp openly at the superheroes—and Steve is among them, instantly volunteering to help Jane and Darcy with their work of art.

When they’re done, fingers numbed in the cold, he invites them to whatever kitchen he tends to use, for grilled cheese and coffee.

“There’s not many people around at the moment,” he says, “I could do with the company.”

So they follow him and even Jane appears a little star-struck in his presence. And she was banging a god on the regular.

Steve’s right, there’s hardly anyone around—only one familiar head of dark hair and beard. She waves at Bucky this time rather than greeting him with words, and he does that twitch with his eyebrows that might mean “hello” or might mean “go away”.

“Missed you upstairs, Buck,” Steve says. “How come you didn’t join in?”

“Snow.” The word is little more than a grunt and carries a ton of meaning behind it.

Darcy can’t help herself. "You really hate the snow that much?"

Bucky looks at her, really looks at her for the first time, and it’s the kind of intense stare that probably makes his enemies cry for their mothers on the battlefield, but only makes her breath catch and her stomach flip.

“I hate the cold whatever form it comes in,” he says gruffly. “New York’s home but I’d rather be on a desert island. Had my fill of winter.”

It’s the most she’s ever heard him say, and she finds herself nodding along. Mostly because she put her foot in it, and is worried that if she responds with actual words she will need surgery to remove said appendage from her mouth. Of course the guy who famously spent decades in ice hates the cold.

“Looks like we might be in for months of it,” Steve says, as he turns on the grill and fetches ingredients from the refrigerator, “so unless you’re moving to that desert island, having a little fun with it isn’t such a bad thing.”

Bucky doesn’t say another word, silently demolishing three grilled cheeses of his own, but Steve proves to be good company, asking Jane about her work and regretting it, before moving onto a scathing review of the most hipster parts of Brooklyn.

Darcy says goodbye to Bucky when they leave, but it turns out he crept away without anyone noticing.

Steve turns up a lot over the next few weeks. Most of the time he’s looking for Tony, and when Stark can’t be found, he drops by Jane’s lab instead. Bucky is usually here—he’s almost a permanent fixture now—and though Steve doesn’t linger much, his company is easy. Darcy thinks he really is hurting for company, until she notices the way his gaze keeps returning to Jane’s face.

Now Darcy’s paying attention, she realizes Jane keeps glancing at Steve too.

Huh.

It makes sense though. Jane does seem to like them big and blond.

Darcy’s happy to play matchmaker for her friend, sliding away from conversations to give them privacy. She thinks she’s subtle, but one time she catches Bucky raising an eyebrow her way, shaking his head a little.

“What?” she mouths, but he seems to realized they’re making eye contact, and ducks his head to return his attention to his book. It’s one of Jane’s recommendations. The guy might be quiet and brooding, but he must be smart to follow it: Darcy tends to use them as sleep aids.

It seems Steve isn’t oblivious either. He tracks her down to the lab kitchen one afternoon under the pretense of borrowing some milk, but really it’s to sound out how Jane might feel about dinner.

“I’m not really sure how things stand with Thor…”

“Oh, that’s over,” Darcy reassures him. “In a friendly way, but it was all spark and no substance. Plus interspecies relationships are hard enough without adding in intergalactic travel.”

“Good. That’s good. I was wondering if—”

“There’s this Japanese place in the Financial District she’s been trying to get a table at forever, but apparently a Nobel Prize doesn’t open as many doors as you’d think. If, say, Pepper could get a booking for two, I know Jane would jump at the chance to go.”

“I can do that.”

“Let me find you their details,” Darcy replies, already loading the search function on her Starkphone.

“While we’re sort of on the subject—I know Bucky doesn’t say much, and he’d kill me for talking about this, but he’s sweet on someone too.”

She frowns down at her phone and refuses to look up at Steve. If he’s about to ask her on how to help his friend to hook up with his crush, she’s going to have to politely decline. That’s a level of masochism she’s not willing to sink to.

“Uh huh,” is all she manages. “You got somewhere to note this down?”

“Darcy,” Steve says softly, “it’s you.”

That makes her look up, if only in confusion. “What’s me? If I tell you the name of this place, I suppose you can work out how to find it yourself.”

“You’re the girl Bucky’s sweet on.”

She blinks a few times. “So, uh, maybe you could just write the name on your hand?”

Steve sighs. “Why do you think he’s spending so much time in Jane’s lab?”

“He likes science.”

“He does,” Steve agrees. “But not as much as he likes you. Because you’re all he talks about.”

“Oh.” Actually, this explains how Steve knew her name when they first met. “Huh.”

“And you like him.”

“Well, he’s nice to look at. He’s pretty taciturn though.”

Steve gives her a stern look which has a glimmer of amusement behind it. “I know you like him more than that.”

Darcy tries to deflect. “So what has Bucky actually said about me? How do I know you’re not jumping to conclusions?”

“I’ve been his best friend since the 1920s. I know what it looks like when he’s carrying a torch for a girl.”

“Okay, so why are you telling me this?”

“Because he won’t do anything about it.”

“You want me to make the first move,” she says blandly.

“Or you could give him an encouraging sign? He’s still learning how to function as a person again, and I think you’d be great for him. He just needs a little help getting there. Right now, he’s too wrapped up in seventy years of misery.”

“I don’t know. If he thinks he’s not ready to start dating again, I don’t want to push him.” She also doesn’t want to put herself out there in a way which is going to get her heart stomped on.

“Just continue making him feel comfortable in the lab, like you do for me. Talk to him, even if he doesn’t talk back. Treat him like a person.”

Darcy chews her lip but finally relents with a nod. “I better not end up regretting this,” she warns Steve.

“You won’t,” he promises with a soft smile, and dashes away to see Pepper about getting a table booked.

December arrives with a lot of darkness but not much in the way of snow. There’s a ton of rain and Darcy’s okay with that so long as she doesn’t have to leave the tower to go out into it.

Overnight the tower is transformed, dripping with decorations in every corridor and every room. Not all of them are Christmas decorations, either, as Stark Industries seems to have made an effort to incorporate most of the main religious festivals: Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Yule, even Festivus.

Darcy has to explain that one to Steve and Bucky.

She’s done as Steve asked, openly talking to Bucky when he’s in the lab, but she still gets little response from him beyond a grunt or two. Undeterred, she’s taken to sitting at his preferred table when she’s typing up Jane’s notes, or doing a little knitting when Jane is lost in her own brain and hasn’t given Darcy anything to do.

It’s the latter which finally coaxed something out of Bucky.

“People still do that?” he asks, nodding at the motion of her needles. “Thought you could buy everything nowadays.”

“It’s soothing,” she replies. “Besides, sure you can buy scarves and sweaters, but if I knit something, it’s unique.”

That seems to be the end of it, but she resolves to make him a nice chunky scarf and glove set. If he hates the cold, she can help him keep warm. That project she only works on in the secrecy of her apartment, but she’s got plenty of time to knit in the lab, because Bucky’s taken over the task of transcribing Jane’s notes. He’s a slow typist but he reads Jane’s notes faster than Darcy does, and once she recommends an online typing course he picks up speed.

She leaves his gift on top of the latest pile of books Jane leaves out, and makes sure she’s away from the table when he arrives, poking around with a screwdriver at a malfunctioning circuit board.

He freezes when he sees the pile of gifts, then reaches out to touch them with his right arm. His hand doesn’t quite make it—he snatches it away as if it might get burned—and he looks across the lab at her with wide eyes and a visible swallow.

She meets his gaze and smiles at him.

“To keep you warm,” she says, then returns her attention to the circuit board.

If Steve wanted her to give Bucky a sign, she thinks she’s done what was asked. The ball is now firmly in Bucky’s court. And when she takes the knitted set as well as the books when he leaves the lab, she counts it as a victory.

One of the downsides to all of the festive decorations is that there is mistletoe every-frigging-where. Worse, it seems to move overnight, as if FRIDAY is trying to catch people out through complacency. She probably is, on Tony’s orders. Darcy’s already exchanged five pecks with Jane as they come and go from the lab, and she’s even had to give Steve a few cheek kisses. It’s more tedious than titillating at this point.

That she might meet Bucky under one of the sprigs doesn’t even cross her mind: he slinks to and from the lab at unpredictable times, never crossing paths with anyone else.

Yet now she finds herself staring up at the ceiling with her hands on her hips, ready to tear FRIDAY a new one. The sprig definitely wasn’t there this morning. She’s pretty sure it wasn’t even there five minutes ago, but when Bucky walks over to pick up Jane’s newest notes from Darcy’s station, his head is brushed by green tendrils. Both of them look up to find mistletoe dangling above them.

Her mouth goes dry at the thought. She can see Bucky’s breathing deepen, his chest rising and falling, and when she glances away his hand twitches around the notes.

She licks her lips. It’s involuntary, and she doesn’t want to call it anticipatory, even as she can feel his stare on her mouth as she does it. She has to flick her own gaze up to meet his, and for a moment it feels like they’re falling towards each other, drawn together by an invisible force that wants their lips to connect.

Except it must be her imagination. She lets her eyes drifts shut, feels something brush her cheek—silky and scratchy at the same time—and when she opens her eyes again she’s alone in the lab.

Bucky’s gone.

He doesn’t return to the lab before she goes home for Hanukkah, and it’s making it weird. If he’d come back that day, or the next, Darcy could have brushed off the mistletoe incident. She was all prepared to make jokes about it being nice not having to kiss Jane again, but the longer she goes without seeing him, the more it feels like something fundamental has changed. She worries he might not come back at all.

In the meantime, it feels like her cheeks been branded where he kissed it. She figures that’s what she felt, his beard against her skin, and now it feels like she’s constantly having flashbacks to the sensation. Like phantom beard syndrome.

Jane’s as frustrated by Bucky’s absence as Darcy is, even if she’s oblivious to the reason why. Darcy doesn’t catch Jane’s notation errors like Bucky apparently sometimes managed to so Jane’s had to go back to checking over the typed-up work to make sure it’s all correct. But Darcy can’t explain away his absence, not without admitting more to Jane than she wants to right now. The only saving grace is upcoming vacation time.

Another of the perks of working for Stark Industries is the overly generous vacation allowance. Darcy gets to spend two whole weeks with her family back in Ohio, and she’s ready for a break from the city. It’s only when she gets to JFK that she realizes her love of winter is going to bite her in the ass.

There’s a snowstorm. Blizzard seems a little melodramatic, but the amount of white stuff pouring from the sky is enough to get all flights out canceled for the next couple of days. The line for a cab is a mile long, and isn’t moving because few cabs are actually turning up. She breaks a lifelong vow and downloads the Uber app, only to discover all their drivers aren’t coming out into the snow either. Even the AirTrain has ground to a standstill.

She rings up the tower to beg for a lift from somebody. Jane’s already left for Hanukkah in London with her mother, so Darcy’s left ringing around other lab assistants and finally leaves a pleading message with FRIDAY.

Her Starkphone beeps a moment later. Someone will be with you as soon as possible, Miss Lewis, the AI confirms.

She trudges her way to the pick-up point, lurking inside until another bleep on her phone notifies her that her ride has arrived. She shuffles out to find an SUV waiting—one of the Stark fleet—with the plates FRIDAY has confirmed, and the driver rushes out to help her with her luggage. He’s all bundled up in black, the hood of his coat shielding his face , and she thinks nothing of it until she’s settled in the passenger seat, holding her hands up to the heating vents.

“I hope this passes quickly,” she says to the driver as he climbs back in, trying to spark a conversation “I can get a later flight out to my family, but I don’t want to miss another Hanukkah—I already spent the last few overseas.”

He makes a noncommittal sound in his throat, and the hood drops away to reveal Bucky. The beard’s been reduced to a scattering of stubble, which is why it wasn’t so obvious to her outside.

“Oh. Hi.” She belatedly pastes a smile onto her face. “How come you got lumbered with picking me up?”

“Nobody else was available.”

She’s not sure if he means it as bluntly as she says it. All she can manage is another “oh”, then she turns to face the window, watching the world pass in churned up snow and more falling flakes.

He’s a careful driver, or has the skill to keep the car on terra firma even when she can see conditions aren’t the best. She wasn’t expecting much in the way of conversation from him anyway, but she can forgive him for his silence tonight if he’s concentrating.

Only when they pull into the underground garage below Stark Tower does the pressure return for her to speak. They’re left in momentary darkness as he kills the engine, and she can hear her own breath hitch in the ensuing silence. Then the external lights are turned on by FRIDAY, and they’re sitting in shadows within the car.

She expects him to bolt again, but instead neither of them makes a move. She studies his face, even as he does not look at her, and she can’t read him at all. The shadows does wonderful things for him: highlighting his cheekbones, and the sharpness of his jaw, and the plushness of his mouth.

She’s staring at his mouth again.

“Thanks for picking me up,” she mumbles. Then, because she might not get another opportunity to say it, “You shouldn’t avoid the labs just because of a little bit of greenery. Jane misses you.” She takes a deep breath. “I miss you. And I think you enjoyed helping us, so it’s a silly thing to avoid us over.”

“S’more than that.” He speaks so quietly that if they weren’t in the complete silence of the garage, she doesn’t think she’d be able to hear him. And he does, eventually, look at her. “You know why.”

His eyes are black in the half-light, and there’s more of her reflected in them than anything else. But he’s being honest with her, so she needs to return the favor.

“I do. But you know it’s reciprocal, don’t you?”

Like that, he’s shuttered once more, gaze back on the steering wheel. “It’s more complicated than that. I’m too complicated.”

She doesn’t know how to go about unpacking that. She squelches the urge to be flippant, because he deserves more than that. “Most people are,” she says quietly. “But maybe I’m not looking for some heavy, intense deal. Maybe I’m just looking to connect with another person. Get to know them, see if we click, see if we’re good at keeping each other company. It doesn’t have to be more complicated than that.”

He lets out a shaky breath. “I don’t know if I can do that.”

“You won’t until you try.”

He doesn’t respond to that. She straightens herself, steeling to leave. “Here’s the deal. Stark’s holding his usual New Year shindig up in the penthouse. I’ll be back for that. I doubt you were planning on going, but if you want to give this thing a chance, you can meet me on the terrace at five to midnight. If you don’t turn up, I won’t hold it against you. Hell, I’ll even send Steve to drag you back into the labs if you keep avoiding us. But the offer’s there.”

She’s out of the car before he can say anything else.

The party’s a little tame by Tony’s standards. It’s probably because he’s not drinking and Pepper’s the one in charge, so it’s all very tasteful. Darcy mingles, at first with Jane, then splitting off when Steve arrives and the pair start making goo-goo eyes at each other.

Their dinner date went well. Better than well. Darcy thinks Jane might be trying to decide what baby names go best with “Foster-Rogers”.

On her part, Darcy switches between soda and champagne, trying to keep a clear head by scoffing plenty of the hors d’oeuvres circulating the room. She knows Bucky isn’t here and if he does come, it won’t be before the time she’d stated. It doesn’t make her any less aware of every corner of the room, even as she’s trying to make polite conversation with Zane from Accounts.

Outside, the sky has decided to grace them with even more snow.

Then, terrifyingly, Darcy ends up surrounded by Avengers. She gets dragged over by Jane when she’s distracted—“Come and meet everyone, Darce!”—and before she knows it, she’s wedged on a sofa between people she’s seen doing terrifying, wonderful things on TV. Sure, she already knows Steve and Tony (and Thor, but he’s not here), but it’s dizzying to be introduced to people under the unassuming names of “Clint”, “Wanda”, “Nat”, and “Sam”.

Truthfully, it’s the women who terrify her. Natasha Romanoff is more interested in Darcy than she should be, all wolfish smiles and pertinent questions, which triggers a faint reminder that she has history with Bucky. Meanwhile, Wanda Maximoff looks through her as much as she looks at her, and though Darcy can’t feel her rummaging around in her head, she’s slightly worried it’s happening anyway.

Then the two women share smiles and it’s like Darcy’s passed a test. After that, they keep her wrapped up in conversation, plying her with bite-sized desserts and fancy soda.

It’s only when Tony sends out the call at ten minutes to midnight—“You’d all better have a glass ready!”—that she makes excuses to visit the bathroom and sneaks out. Nobody’s gone out on the terrace despite the door being unlocked because it’s just so damn cold, but Darcy retrieves her coat from the cloakroom and slips out anyway.

She finds a quiet corner away from the main windows, knowing Bucky won’t like being overlooked if he does turn up. It’s not like she wants an audience either. She’s shivering even as she shoves her hands into her pockets, and it’s from nerves as much as anything.

She stands facing out to the city, letting the snow settle over her, enjoying the way it blankets everything in a little measure of hush that’s so rare. At midnight, she’ll be alone, but at least she’ll have a good view of the fireworks.

Then she hears a breath behind her—no footsteps, not even crunching in the snow, only a soft sigh. Darcy turns, and Bucky’s there, the softness reflected in his entire being. She’s never seen him not be tense, but tonight he’s free of it, almost on the verge of smiling.

“I thought you weren’t going to come,” she whispers. “The snow—”

“It’s not so bad,” he replies, and the corner of his mouth does crook upwards. “Might even be worth it.”

She holds her own breath, waiting for him to go on, imploring and impatient.

“A chance, you said.” His voice is low, hesitant. He reaches out and takes one of her hands, rubbing it between his own to generate a little warmth. He’s wearing the gloves she made for him. And the scarf. If she weren’t so cold, she’d melt at his feet. “Some company. A connection. I think I can do that. I think I can try.”

She’s nodding at him encouragingly, and that force she’d felt before, under the mistletoe, is back. Drawing them together, toe to toe, so close she can feel the heat from his body. He smiles at her, fully smiles, and she’s so taken aback she has to sway into him for support. Doesn’t matter; he’s ready to catch her, drawing an arm around her waist to keep her close, pressing their foreheads together.

Behind her, fireworks begin to signal the new year. Darcy has something to say, but then Bucky’s mouth is on hers, ringing in the new year in the best way possible.

Talking can wait. There are other ways to make a connection.

Balancing Boundaries: Part 4 Co-Existing

Part 1

I had a conversation yesterday with an artist who is uncomfortable sharing fandom space with older fans given some amount of fandom has sexual connotations.

Some minors and survivors don’t like the fact adults write or draw NSFW fanart about teen characters (whether they’re teens in canon or high school AUs).

That’s valid.

They shared:

“When we have people approaching their mid-20s and nearing their 30s coming on my art and calling [teenage video game characters] sexy that makes me uncomfortable and I have every right to feel disrespected and uncomfortable and call out the behavior. I do not want my art consumed by people who think that is alright, and if you are one of those people I kindly ask you to never interact with me or my content again.”

That’s also valid.

You absolutely have the right to feel uncomfortable about anything and to say, “X makes me uncomfortable, please don’t say that to me’.

That’s a boundary.

You absolutely have a say in what people can say to you or talk to you about, and in what you want to see.

But remember, one person’s boundaries aren’t the same as everyone’s boundaries and experiences aren’t universal.

Personally, one of my first fandoms was FF7. It was an older fandom then (it came out in 1997) so by the time I was old enough to look at 18+ rated works there were plenty of adults in the fandom writing them.

Of course, there were adults there, it came out a long time ago, just as of course there are adults in the Kingdom Hearts fandom. (If you were anywhere near the character’s age when the games came out, you’re in your mid-twienties to early 30s now because the game came out nearly 16 years ago).

As a young person in fandom, I was happy adults existed who were writing adult content, because the fandom being older meant there was tons of stuff available to read. Once I turned 18 and was actually allowed to look at NSFW/18+ stuff, I wanted to explore it to see if there was anything I liked.

My friends had favorite authors and loved them. My husband read Cloud/Sephiroth work called “Blonde Ambition” by @owmyhearteries. The fic is about Cloud as a teenage gay boy in love with the much older Sephiroth. There is sex in this fic.

For my husband, it became the vehicle to project himself and vicariously explore his own sexuality. As a teenager he was an orphan by abandonment living with a conservative grandmother in Mississippi, who’d been treated like he was the living embodiment of shame because he was born out of wedlock. (It’s Mississippi). So he could never be a teenage boy who had celebrity crushes openly. He couldn’t even dream about acting on them.

So a story of a kid from a small town going to a big city and having that dream boy fall in love with him was a perfect fantasy. It was escapism. And it was something which helped him come to accept his own sexuality and be ok with liking boys. Because sex was portrayed as positive and normal.

As for me, I’m sex repulsed due to CSA. Sex scenes do nothing for me or make me uncomfortable, so I skip them but I wanted to explore it anyway to see if anything would be enjoyable. I also like stories where characters like sex, because I want to imagine what it would be like to not flinch if someone so much as touches you. What it would be like to want that kind of intimacy and explore free from trauma and shame. One of my friends who I met in group therapy, like me a survivor, actually suggested looking at porn to help with recovery. To disconnect the idea of sex as something bad and unwanted and shameful and to reimagine it as something good. And reading sex set in a High School AU or listening to the same songs I listened in High School about teens in love doing things and imagining a world where I could have a teen that dated and experimented and enjoyed it is helpful to me.

As I said, the thing about “safe spaces” and “triggers” is the thing that makes one person feel unsafe, uncomfortable, or triggered can make another person feel safe, comfortable, and assured.

We co-exist by being aware that we share this space. We listen when people say they’re uncomfortable. We tag and we warn. We let things exist that we don’t like, because we recognize that one person’s poison can be another person’s medicine.

Do what makes you happy. Avoid what makes you upset. Try to make others happy as best you can while balancing everyone’s needs.

That doesn’t mean don’t be critical. Be critical. Point out why something is problematic whether it’s 50 Shades or Star Wars. Talk about why problematic things in fiction are a problem. Our society is full of harmful notions we need to unlearn and using media depictions that reenforce these notions is an opportunity to examine them and reject harmful norms.

But remember you can be critical of something and still recognize that other people like it, and you can like something and still be critical about it. The best inoculation against harmful norms and stereotypes is discussing them, recognizing them, and separating what you enjoy in a movie from what’s not actually ok.

Weekly Voltron Fic Recs #40

No, it hasn’t been a week since the last one. I need to shorten the turn-around time because there are going to be WAY too many entries on these lists. Expect the next one in a few days.

Rules: You can find past weekly rec lists here, and non-list recs in my general fic rec tag. Also follow @maychorianrecs for individually tagged posts, the easier to search and reblog. This is stuff I like, and I have a huge bias toward Lance, hurt/comfort, and general fluff, in that order. Gen unless otherwise noted. Please comment on the fics if you read and enjoy them!

Culture Shock by avidbeader Words: 2,217 Author’s Summary: The team is hunting up supplies for Coran on a new planet. Keith and Pidge run up against some erroneous assumptions from the locals. My Comments: Talk about repressive societies. That’s not a planet you want to hang out on for any length of time. Love protective teammates though, as well as Pidge going firecracker-mad.

Like a Rolling Stone by Emerald_Ashes Words: 2,380 Author’s Summary: Lance had distanced himself from the blue lion since they switched pilots around. But he was still drawn to her, and finds himself wandering down to her hangar one sleepless night. My Comments: Season Three spoilers. Aw, poor Lance. I’m so glad Allura talked to him and she was able to reassure him a bit.

A Very Bland Slumber Party by genericfanatic Words: 3,252 Author’s Summary: Lance and Hunk have a surprise for everyone they want to show off. Another ‘thank you’ fic for getting 500 FOLLOWERS on my side-blog, 'blandvoltronheadcanons’ My Comments: Super adorable team bonding fic with only a hint of angst. Everyone gets to relax and have a nice time with each other.

Altea Zoo by Jenniwrites, Your_Friendly_Neighborhood_Pigeon Words: 10,763 Author’s Summary: Five semi-normal days at Altea Zoo My Comments: I’m not sure how realistic this is for how a zoo would actually work, but this is a fun, fluffy fic about the paladins in an AU where they get to hang out with animals and help each other with much more ordinary, everyday problems instead of trying to save the universe. The art is fantastic, too.

Back From the Wars by yet_intrepid Words: 1,019 Author’s Summary: Somebody is carrying him. Shiro doesn’t like it. It isn’t normal. My Comments: Oh gosh, poor Shiro. What an awful time to have a dissociative flashback. I mean, there’s never really a good time, but this one is particularly bad. Good thing he has Hunk there to ground him.

Of Gripping Nightmares and Lingering Dark by twilighteve Words: 5,265 Author’s Summary: They might have gotten Lance back, but weeks of corruption have left its mark. Wound of the body was easy to recover from; the cryopod could heal anything given enough time. Wound of the mind, wound of the soul… it was harder, much harder, to heal. Direct continuation to Of Broken Bonds and Corrupted Sou My Comments: Part of a series in which Lance gets ice powers, then is kidnapped by Haggar, who tries to corrupt him into serving the Galra Empire. This a very, very good aftermath fic, with just a ton of cuddling and hurt/comfort and supportive teammates. Poor Lance is taking quite a while to recover from him ordeal, but his friends are not giving up on him. I love it so much.

Saving Grace by JamtheDingus Words: 3,160 Author’s Summary: Shiro narrowed his eyes as he began to connect the dots. Hunk avoided his gaze, and Keith crossed his arms and met Shiro’s look head-on.“What did you two do?” “Nothing!” Hunk spoke up too quickly, all too readily admitting his guilt. — The one where Hunk and Keith steal an egg, kick some ass, and totally get away with it, too. My Comments: Absolutely adorable fantasy/mmo AU with Hunk and Keith teaming up to be awesome. I haven’t read the other fics in the series, but this stands fine alone. I really enjoyed it.

a hollow nest to dream in by lacking, Quadriviuum Words: 14,425 Author’s Summary:Shiro blinks and sees a black sun reflected on dark water, his own fingers wrapped tightly around his lion’s controls. Constellations spin overhead and a view screen flickers in front of his eyes, the images blending together like a poorly exposed photograph. There’s a sharp pull deep within his chest, a hook slipping in between two ribs that catches when it tries to lift free. Shiro becomes unfixed in space and time after vanishing from the Black Lion, slipping between alternate versions of his life. The paladins try to bring him back, but their interference could be causing more harm than good. My Comments: What an AMAZING fic. I love all the worlds Shiro visits on his unwilling journey through time and space. So many poignant moments, and wonderful characterization of everyone involved. This fic is beautiful, unsettling at times, but the conclusion is magnificent.

There are many names in history, but none of them ours by xhiro Words: 2,108 Author’s Summary: It’s hard to sleep with the feeling of blood on your hands. And Shiro has to be cursed to have had not one, but two Holts in his life. At least she seems to have just as much trouble sleeping. My Comments: A quiet, fraught moment. These two both have so much pain to bear, and a lot of it is wound up in each other.

Legendary Defenders by ravyn_sinclair Words: 2,479 Author’s Summary: It was huge, multi-colored to the point of being a psychodelic catastrophy, with simply the biggest neck hole he’d never thought he’d ever see, and a part of him wondered how Lance was even wearing it, as bunched together and hanging off of him as the piece of fabric was. “This is the greatest thing that Voltron needs, Hunk,” Lance said, a trill of excitement hiding in the barely stifled giggles of his voice as he got closer.Hunk sighed, lips tugging up unwillingly. “Oh really, that’s…that’s nice, I guess, though I don’t see how – Lance, what are you doing.” – In which Lance finds the largest, ugliest shirt and the Team Forms Voltron. My Comments: This might be the cutest, funniest thing I have ever read. I came very close to laughing aloud at work.

thunder breaks when i open my mouth by arkhmknights for darlingneverland Words: 4,193 Author’s Summary: “Were you ever frightened like this?” Allura whispered.Shiro didn’t respond, and for a moment Allura feared he’d vanished (to miss a voice in her own head—perhaps she truly was going insane). Then he whispered back: All the time. (Or: Allura, stranded and hurt on a strange planet, with only the voice of her missing friend for company. Not exactly how she planned to begin her career as a paladin.) My Comments: Interesting take on Allura as the black paladin, struggling to get along in a difficult situation. It’s a good thing Shiro is there, kind of.

The Fluffy Secret by Eastofthemoon Words: 16,868 Author’s Summary: Keith has a deep, dark secret…he’s a big softie when it comes to animals. When Hunk, Lance and Pidge discover he’s been rescuing animals and bringing them on the ship, there’s only one thing they can do! Help him take care of the animals in secret without letting Shiro, Allura or Coran finding out. My Comments: The CUTEST fic. I loved every single moment. Everyone’s reactions to Keith keeping pets was so adorable and in-character. They all really kind of desperately need therapy animals, which is kind of what this becomes, too. Lots of cute, sweet, fluffy moments.

You and the sea, talking by Veto_power_over_clocks Words: 4,435 Author’s Summary: The proper way of bonding with your lion. I love Blue’s voice in this as the two of them get to know each other and Lance begins to accept her support.

Tunnel to the Sky by ImpendingExodus Words: 37,872 Author’s Summary: The Castle is in disrepair, the Galra are invading, and the Paladins only wanted to go on a day trip to the space mall. Oh well, not everyone gets what they want. Time to turn space pirate. My Comments: This is one of the fics that just grabs you and won’t let go. Once the plot gets going, it does NOT stop, with all of its twists and turns and reversals. Great suspense and tension, and the characters were all very well-written, with some touches of angst from Pidge missing her family, Lance’s insecurity, and Shiro’s PTSD.

First Space and the Right Place by Dayadhvam Words: 11,223 Author’s Summary: Shay had asked him, with the sunrise before them: “Have you ever had this feeling, to know that something so wondrous might become so common?” Yes, yes, yes. Or perhaps it was the other way around, the common becoming wondrous—when Hunk had moved from place to place in search of a new home, and learned to be more than a stranger in a strange land. My Comments: I really, really enjoyed this. Very beautiful and poignant exploration of who Hunk is and where he come and what he wants to be. Lyrical and gorgeous.

The Guardian Of Sky by ajkal2 Words: 1,394 Author’s Summary: His bedsheets when he was 6 had been decorated with rockets and stars, little astronauts floating among them. Three seconds to go.—a drabble about astronauts and cosmic lions My Comments: Really cool little fic, very descriptive and interesting, of a moment with Shiro in space.

Crushing Deep by Child_of_the_Fae Words: 4,841 Author’s Summary: During a battle on an oceanic planet, Lance is lost to the deep, and when he comes back he isn’t quite the same anymore My Comments: Very surreal plot, really grabs hold of you. I could really feel what Lance was going through, and the end was very emotional with everyone trying to get Lance back from where he’d gone.

hound by story_monger Words: 47,561 Author’s Summary: Keith has a lot of practice being alone; you might almost say he’s good at it. When he finds himself seriously injured and stranded on an unknown planet, he knows he’s not alone there. And here’s the worst part: even after rescue and after things return to normal, Keith gets the distinct sense that whatever was on that planet has followed him. He doesn’t have proof. But he knows it’s there. He knows it’s not going to stop until it gets what it wants. My Comments: What an absolutely FABULOUS fic. It’s so tightly written, so suspenseful and so engaging. I read this entire thing in one long stretch and I don’t regret a single moment. The story just grabbed me up in its fist and dragged me along. Every time I open up a huge story like this and start reading, I think, “Okay, fic. Seduce me.” And this one TOTALLY did. Can’t recommend it highly enough. There are some very unsettling and scary moments, as well as ones of great beauty, and some tip-top supportiveness and comforting. Wonderful, wonderful fic. Pay attention to the title and the way the meaning of it changes, too.

Over and Overture by BossToaster (ChaoticReactions) Words: 14,531 Author’s Summary: Since Shiro returned, something has been… off about him. But he deals with it, just like he’s dealt with everything else. Until the problems begin to build. My Comments: Season Three spoilers. This is everything I wanted in a post Season Three fic. Everyone is extremely well-characterized, and it just makes so much SENSE. I felt so much for poor not-Shiro, and the ending was extremely satisfying.

Allowed to Be by isabeau25 Words: 1,303 Author’s Summary: *SPOILERS FOR SEASON 3* He’s not Shiro, and they all know it. He is someone though, and he gets a say in that. My Comments: Spoilers for Season Three. Very sweet fic with Lance doing everything he can to support the new person on their team, even though he’s not Shiro.

Iterations by Azzandra Words: 3,968 Author’s Summary: To the question of when exactly Lotor was born, the answer this fic provides is: several times, actually. My Comments: Season Three spoilers. Such a fascinating concept, incredibly well-written. Haggar and Zarkon are undoubtedly evil, but the only creature they have even flashes of caring for is this son, who keeps being born and again and again. Ten thousand years is a long time.

Parallel Support by Arisprite Words: 1,811 Author’s Summary: Lance didn’t expect Keith to be knocking at his door, but he’d do his best to return the favor. But, this might be bigger than the two of them. My Comments: Season Three spoilers. I love the way Keith and Lance have gone to support each other during the new season, and this continues it, with Keith going to Lance to consult about the strangeness he’s observing in Shiro. I hope canon continues to develop their relationship like this.

What I’m Writing

(I put it under a read more because wow, it got long. All the fics are for Kingsman, most are Hartwin but some not)

Fics I’m Actually Writing Editing/Reworking Now

- The Hartwin fic I previewed in my latest Sunday Six. As you could probably tell from that, it involves Eggsy waking up in the hospital wing with Harry at his side and thinking he must be hallucinating, but I think I’ve done a fun twist on it. Both amnesia and possible time travel are involved. It’s already jossed by the trailer, but such is life. Posted!

- A short(ish) fic also jossed by the trailer. I wondered what (if anything) Merlin and/or Roxy might have done to keep the other Kingsman agents from doing what Harry did when Valentine turned the SIM cards on. I came up with the idea of Amelia being assigned to get as many of them as possible somewhere safe, and discovering that Harry isn’t dead in the process. It’s mainly focused on the interactions between her and Harry (and the other Kingsman), but there’s Amelia/Roxy (Roxelia?) and Hartwin in the background. Posted!

- A companion to the above that picks up in Eggsy’s POV where the previous fic left off. Mainly Hartwin with a side-order of Eggsy + Roxy friendship. It’s shorter than I want it to be right now, so further shippy stuff might happen. Maybe a little Merlin/Tilde? Who knows. Posted! (Also two more originally unplanned sequels here and here, one from Harry’s POV and the other from Roxy’s.)

Fics That I’m Returning To Soon Making Slow But Sure Progress On

Note: if anyone reading this sees a fic (or two or five) that they would desperately like to see ASAP, please feel free to say so and I’ll try to put on a little more steam!

- A superpowers AU. Pretty much every character has powers and appears in this fic, but the core group all live in a mansion together and work as private investigators. It’s Merlin’s POV, but he’s a telepath with boundary issues so there’s quite a bit of Hartwin, Roxelle, and Percilot going on in the background. Some Jamal/Ryan/Tilde also seems to be happening?

- A Merhartwin(ish) fic. In it Merlin is aro and he and Harry have a friends with benefits thing going on that really works for them. The fic is mainly about the three of them figuring how Eggsy now fits into it. It’s been tricky to make sure it isn’t too Hartwin + 1, but I really relate to Merlin in this fic so I think I can do him justice.

- A Hartwin Angel Eggsy/Demon Harry AU that I actually started work on before Hope and Good Intentions, but it got stalled. Hopefully I’ll figure out where I’m going with it soon.

- A Hartwin fic where Harry is the writer of a successful series of spy novels and he’s receiving threats. Eggsy gets hired as his bodyguard and would you believe it they fall in love. There’s a twist here but I don’t want to spoil it (how I will tag the story without spoiling it I do not currently know).

- A Hartwin (+ Roxlin) regency AU. Harry is a gentleman and war hero who takes Eggsy and his mother and sister under his wing. It’s not based on any specific story from that period but the vibe is there, lots of slow burn and misunderstandings. Also gay marriage is totes a thing in this universe because what is the genre without overwrought marriage proposals?

- A Hartwin fic based on the Star Trek: Voyager episode Shattered. Different parts of Kingsman HQ are locked in different time periods. Eggsy has to find a way to fix it, and he teams up with a version of Harry who is roughly his age and also another Galahad from the future.

- A young Merlahad fic where Merlin is a scientist working for a potentially evil organization. Harry is hired as his new muscle, but there’s more to him than meets the eye.

- A Harry/Roxy (Harroxy?) marriage of convenience fic. Harry needs a wife for Reasons. He and Roxy get hitched and find it works for them. Posted!

- An A/B/O AU with Harry/Eggsy/Merlin/Roxy (I know right?). It’s alpha!Roxy’s POV because I always see people talking about the cool potential of lady alphas in this trope but I’ve never actually read a fic about one. There’s lots of everyone figuring out their individual relationships and also how they work together as a group.

- A Merwin-to-Merhartwin fic. This is really just me trying to work through my hangups about Merwin in fic form, and though they’re both really crazy about Harry the story is largely about them figuring things out together while Harry’s busy being... like... Catholic (it makes sense in the fic).

Fics That I Keep Putting Off

Note: some of these are actually closer to finished than the ones above, but I’m just not feeling the mojo for whatever reason so they’re stalled. Do feel free to poke me about any one of them too though.

- A 5 + 1 style Hartwin fic about the many times Harry and Eggsy get mistaken for a couple before they actually are. I ended up putting a ton of my dog test angst and like all the PTSD in it, so it’s way less fluffy than that summary makes it sound. There’s also some D/s. IDEK.

- A Hartwin magical realism AU where everyone has a fairy godparent who gives them a “gift” at some point in their lives. That background is really just window dressing in a fic that’s mainly about Harry being a virgin. Don’t ask me why that happened.

- An established Merlahad fic about Merlin coming to terms with losing Harry and then finding him again. It’s also jossed by the trailer but maybe it doesn’t have to be? I don’t know. I’ve mainly been putting off finishing it because I have some scenes written for a Merhartwin sequel to it, and in a perfect world I’d like to know where I was going with that before I took this one any further.

- A Harroxy fic about Harry and Roxy being regular mission partners and eventually more than that. It’s planned as part of a larger Harry/Eggsy/Roxy OT3 series, and therefore slow going.

- A Hartwin Cinderella AU set in the Jupiter Ascending universe. That makes sense in my head. I also have a Gazelde The Little Mermaid sequel in mind, a Sleeping Beauty one with Eggsy and Gazelle being BFFs and saving their respective spouses, and a Beauty and the Beast one maybe with Roxlin.

- A Hartwin soulmate AU? Actually I’ve got three different Hartwin soulmate AUs. One of them is like my soulmate magnum opus that starts before the first movie and then goes through it and changes the events quite a bit. I’m thinking I’ll save it until after TGC because a) it’ll probably take that long to finish it anyway and b) since the plot of TSS is tweaked by it anyway, I could carry that through to the second movie and use it as a fix-it if necessary. The other two are shorter, one set in the same universe as my James Bond fic Heartlines, and the other featuring amnesiac Harry posted here.

- Even more amnesiac Harry and/or time travel Hartwin fics. I’m going to try to focus on just one or two of each, but I really can’t decide which. I won’t go into detail about every single one since this is already so long, but feel free to ask for more info if you’re curious. I’m always happy to cry about all my WIPs.

- Two D/s AU fics, one Hartwin and one Merhartwin. The first is classic dom Harry/sub Eggsy and largely mission related. The other has switch Merlin, sub Harry, and dom Eggsy; it has quite a bit of pining Merlin, but in the end it’s very smutty. I’m going to try to focus my energy on just one, but I haven’t decided which.

I’ve also got a ton of shorter stories in the works, some sequels, and even more long WIPs, but these are the big ones I’m mainly hoping to get done with before we’re all old.
