It’s never fun when a trip comes to an end and I’m gonna miss @ugh-yoongi (and her cats) but so thankful we got to see seventeen together. Equally thankful we survived to tell the tale 😂
Now to work on all the projects I have been putting off once I’m back home

ok sure why not. storytime
so my immediate family is not particularly religious. my mother was raised catholic, but her mother (my maternal grandmother) had a crisis of faith when my mother was little, so that really affected her perception of the whole thing. meanwhile, my dad was raised very nondenominationally christian, and just slowly fell off the wagon as he got older.
my mother’s side of the family? not very religious (or at least, of the relatives i see, not around us). my father’s side of the family? we are talking bible-belt pure-bred appalachian believers. people who will hunt down every family member in a 55 person gathering so we can all stand in a circle and say grace for six minutes. and my nana (my dad’s mother, my paternal grandmother) saw it as her god-given duty to make sure her grandchildren got back on the wagon her youngest son fell off of.
she did this by, without letting my parents know, taking me and my sister to her local church every easter. for several years we would spend the night at her house the day before easter, wake up at her place, and then go to a different relative’s house for afternoon easter celebrations. and she decided to use that morning window to have me and my sister go to what felt like the world’s earliest service.
now, we only actually went to this church for three easters. my nana wanted to take me and my sister there when we were both at an age to actually understand what was happening, so she waited until we reached that level of understanding. the tradition only lasted for three years because that was how long it took me to get banned, and for my parents to find out.
this church ran on a three strikes system for the kids. i accumulated one strike per year.
the first strike was me getting a nosebleed. because me and my sister were new, and my nana had told the priest about trying to convert her grandkids, we had to introduction ourselves. my sister stands up, in a nice dress, introduces herself, gets a little bit of applause. i stand up, my best shirt being a blue flannel with a rhinestone owl in the breast pocket, open my mouth, and taste iron. i spent most of the service in the bathroom, and went home woozy. this was a strike because it absolutely terrified some of the younger members, who thought i was a demon of some sort.
the second strike was me taking a sip from the baptismal fountain. the priest said it was holy water and i wanted to see if it tasted different, so i split from the group and had a couple licks. it was tepid water that i can only assume had been there for a few days, so i thought it was gross. i told one of the kids about it and they told the youth group leader and that was strike two.
the third strike was the cain thing. i was a very snarky, sassy, ‘gotcha’ atheist as a teen (fortunately i’ve grown out of this) and they were telling us the story of cain and abel in the basement, because that’s where the youth group was. i said something very similar to the post above, “why’d he get accused of murder when he was the first person who did it, how did he know that was going to kill abel, my sister bites me all the time, injuring your sibling is just a Sibling Thing” and i so thoroughly would not step off the point that the youth counselor called my nana to pick me up. i was not welcome after that.
now, i admit that it may not have been all my fault. it’s possible that this was a smokescreen for the church disliking that my nana only ever brought her grandkids to church on the day they were having cookies and punch and candy hunting in the backyard. i did get banned from egg hunting for being too old, despite being well within age, cause i found a disproportionate amount of eggs the first time i did egg hunting there. i also, with my dyed hair and flannel, screamed dyke, and they might not have vibed with that.
but regardless, i am lifetime banned from a small church in the appalachian mountains, and my sister may be as well due to my actions. she has since found god, and i’ve found an utterly bizarre believe system that would probably get me double-banned from that church. so it goes.

hi yes im still alive
DON’T MIND ME, I’M JUST--
HAVING A MOMENT TO PROCESS ALL THE LORE AND STORY CHAPTER 6 JUST DROPPED ON US, I CAN BARELY WRITE
AHHHHHHH, I HAVE SO MANY THOUGHTS 😭 kjdbbaufbiafafvoaybo LEMME PUT ON MY THINKING CAP AND THROW SOME STUFF OUT ASDYUBUASDLI;AGVUOQIB;VI You’ll understand why I used Leona’s face here even though it’s Idia and Ortho’s chapter after you read my thoughts--
***Chapter 6 (and other main story) spoilers below the cut!***
Tumblr media
Okay, just to keep it simple, I’ll try to keep things in chronological order!
First is a bullet point list of my thoughts on chapter 6 so far, then all my questions and theories (mostly a biggish theory on Ace) are at the end of the post.
Expectation: Idia cowering in his room, Vil and Rook busting down his door using Epel as a battering ram, dead Ortho theory confirmed
Reality: SWAT TEAM RAID ON NRC, DORM LEADERS (sans Kalim) AND JAMIL GET KIDNAPPED
Admittedly, I’m disappointed to see that the injury Grim inflicted to MC was basically just a cat scratch and nothing more. I thought it would be a lot more impactful if MC had to deal with juggling the realization that Grim has betrayed their friendship and trust while also on the verge of death (or at least while being severely injured)... And given how MC reacted to the attack at the end of chapter 5, I would think whatever struck them was much more substantial than just a cat scratch. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say either the script got scrubbed by Disney, or the intent was that MC was still woozy from VDC / OB Vil, MC felt so betrayed that it shook them emotionally, or that MC was just that weak by default that they can’t defend themselves against cat claws.
Hey, Ramshackle’s finally getting renovated! Proceeds to immediately get destroyed again--
I feel like????????? They tried to retroactively explain why Neige won to try and mitigate the uproar over how VDC ended. There’s some dialogue between the VDC group about how they didn’t perform at their peak because of having just walked out of dealing with OB Vil, and how Neige’s fans were going to vote for him anyway because they resonated with his background. Honestly, I think they should have moved on from that sore spot instead of bringing it up again, even if how chapter 5 ended didn’t personally bother me.
BOOM, HERE COME THE TWST TERMINATORS--
NOT GONNA LIE, THOSE STYX GUYS LOOK HOT SO COOL
AAAAAAND IT’S KIDNAPPING MONTAGE TIME, KIDS
JOABSFHUPAUABDBADB CALM DOWN, RIDDLE??????? YOU’RE GOING TO COMMIT ARSON IN BROAD DAYLIGHT--
Okay, I know this chapter’s focused on Ignihyde and Grim, but the standout part to me (so far) has been the scene where Leona’s being kidnapped. Historically, Leona has not been a character that I like (excluding that one time I had to pretend to like him for a game). I feel like he’s one massive missed opportunity (he didn’t show up much in chapter 2, he’s pretty similar backstory-wise to his Disney counterpart compared to the other Dorm Leaders, he didn’t seem to learn anything or become a better person even a LITTLE after chapter 2, etc.). I’m not a fan of his lazy and arrogant attitude either (even if it is justified by his backstory). But here? THIS IS THE LEONA I ACTUALLY LIKE AND WANT TO SEE MORE OF.
LIKE????? I CAN’T DESCRIBE TO YOU HOW MUCH I LIKE THIS SCENE???? Yeah, we have Leona fighting STYX at first, but as soon as he realizes who they are, he wises up and surrenders because he knows better than to resist arrest. AND NOT ONLY THAT, but he uses King’s Roar in a smart way--to turn the falling greenhouse glass panes into sand so they don’t hurt anyone nearby (namely him and Ruggie).
And after he turns himself in????? LEONA TELLS RUGGIE TO TAKE CARE OF SAVANACLAW FOR HIM!!! THIS is what a real leader would do. He looks after himself and his people, but he knows when to surrender, AND he leaves his “kingdom” (the dorm) in good hands while he’s away. THIS is the Leona I want to see.
AJBDUASHPFBUABFIABIYFBIPFAAFIAF I ALSO REALLY LIKE HIS SASS WHEN HE JUST THROWS HIS HANDS UP AND ASDBIASBIABAIODDAYOFAIPPADAIDB SAYS “I’ll go with you, but be careful while escorting me, okay? Despite my looks, I'm a precious prince. I’ll get sick/dizzy if you drive recklessly.” SARCASTIC SASSY SMARTASS??????? IF YOU HAD MORE LINES LIKE THIS, I’D LIKE YOU MORE
I love how Azul’s still talking about capitalism/how he can profit from Idia (apparently the Shrouds are like the TWST equivalent of Google??????) as he’s being escorted away by the agents?????? IF I WERE HIM, I’D BE PISSED OFF THAT THEY INTERRUPTED MY BOARD GAME????? At least let the man finish first--
Damn, everyone’s being tasered???????? And apparently all the STYX agents are equipped with anti-magic plates? I guess Bind the Heart can just eat shit then--
Lilia’s ringtone is cute, period.
CROWLEY CALLED STYX TO CAPTURE GRIM???? GRIM IS OFFICIALLY A SCP THAT NEEDS TO BE CONTAINED????
WAIT WHAT CROWLEY’S BEING KIDNAPPED TOO??????? Oh well, the school is probably safer in Trein’s hands anyway--
askhlbfbilhidbabbidasb RIDDLE WAKES UP POST KIDNAPPING AND HE’S USING LEONA AS A LAP PILLOW?????!
How does it feel to be held in a room against your will, Jamil? Yeah, don’t like a taste of your own medicine, do you?
OH HI IDIA, NICE YZMA MAD SCIENTIST GETUP YOU GOT THERE
Wait, what????? THAT’S IT?????? SERIOUSLY???????
MAN.
I have so many questions??????? Specifically about STYX and what they do, and how the Shrouds are tied into all of it.
So they say STYX is a specialized unit called in to quell serious Overblot cases. And if Crowley called them to deal with Grim... well, bad times ahead for Grim. STYX has also been studying Overblot for a long time, which is why (I think?) they captured Riddle, Leona, Azul, Jamil, and Vil.
There’s been some allusions made between Grim and Stitch in a lot of fan art and fan theories I’ve seen, since their struggles have some parallels: that being them struggling to decide if they are “good” or “bad”. I don’t know if this was intentional on the part of the TWST writing team, but regardless, it’s a really good concept that plays into the themes of TWST itself. There’s no good, there’s no evil, no black and white--most of the characters we see may be BASED on villains, but that doesn’t MAKE them villains. They are good, and bad, in their own ways--and now Grim is dealing with that crisis as he fights to keep his sanity and avoid completely succumbing to Overblot.
Though Idia seems to be involved with STYX’s research, it doesn’t sound like he personally gave the order to retrieve those test subjects (or at the very least, he’s not happy about roughing up the test subjects), it sounds like the orders came from other people in the organization. His parents, perhaps?
They mention briefly that Idia’s parents are asking him to “come home”, so it must be for something urgent. Are they worried about his safety? But Idia’s lines at the end of chapter 5 lead me to think he is estranged from his family, since he straight up rejected a job offer linked to them (Olympus Corp is owned by the Jupiter family, and the Shrouds are a branch family of Jupier), and says something like “I’m not welcome anywhere”. Has Idia done something to disgrace him from the rest of the family? Or is it more of a self imposed/self inflicted statement, given that he always says he’s “cursed” and acts like he’s guilty of something that deserves scorn?
Why is Idia participating in STYX research, even if it means experimenting on his fellow students (and fellow board game enthusiast Azul)? People are speculating that he wants to use blots to fully revive Ortho (if dead Ortho theory is true), or that Idia actually has heroic intentions (he wants to know more about blots to prevent OBing from happening?), but at this point??? Literally anything could happen?!
In future parts, I’m guessing Pomefiore, MC, and Adeuce will team up to break Jamil and the Dorm Leaders (except Malleus, Malleus got left out again www) out? And HOPEFULLY we get to see Rook’s Unique Magic or at least more screen time, since I feel like he got so little in chapter 5... Another thing I’d like to see is Ace and/or Epel getting their Unique Magic, or at least starting to develop it. It’s really mostly Ace I want more details for.
A theory I’ve been holding onto for a long time is that Deuce getting his UM will spur Ace on to become jealous (since he has always seen Deuce as an idiot/”lesser” than him), and that will cause a rift in the friendship, or for Ace to throw himself into a dangerous situation to prove himself (he has done it before with Riddle)... and has his ass rescued again. This would make Ace even angrier, since he feels like everyone is treating him like a little kid or rubbing it in that he isn’t “as good” as they are. I don’t know where it would go from there (I’m sure TWST would get creative), but ultimately it would culminate in Ace making amends with everyone and rushing in to save them from either Grim or Idia OB.
I don’t think Ace would discover his UM in a similar manner as Deuce (Deuce had to embrace his own stubbornness and straightforwardness, but as the term “Unique” Magic implies, the way a magic develops and manifests is “unique” to the user). While Deuce has to learn to accept his own way of thinking, I believe Ace is already sure of his own way of thinking and has totally accepted it. I think what Ace has to deal with instead is coming to terms with his fickleness. We’ve seen him time and time again treating his loved ones kind of callously, from constantly bullying MC, Grim, and Deuce to ghosting his own girlfriend and flaking on people when they are counting on him to do a task.
The issue with Ace isn’t that he isn’t aware, it’s that he is aware and he seems to think this behavior is totally okay. He demonstrates little to no remorse in what he does and says, and he doesn’t seem to care about the consequences either (how many times does he get punished by Riddle, yet he keeps doing the same dumb things over and over?). Ace appears to operate under the mindset of always being in the right, or (if he’s in the wrong), he won’t really acknowledge it, or he will wave it off as “no big deal”--and I think that’s his greatest weakness.
In the scenario I described earlier, I mentioned that Ace’s jealousy will cause a wedge between him and his friends, and I think this will play into him realizing the error of his ways. When he has finally driven away all of the people that supported him, what will he have left? Nothing. Then maybe Ace suddenly finds himself relating to Idia, or to Grim, who have Overblotted and are in a similar emotional state as he is. Confused and lonely... and that energizes him to pitch in again, even if all he has is wind magic up his sleeve. Everyone could be shocked that Ace has returned, and in that moment, he could finally realize his true potential and unlock his Unique Magic!
(Maybe that’s too specific, but that’s a scenario that I’ve had playing in my head for a long time!)
... Buuuuut given that Ace has gotten little to no spotlight so far in chapter 6, I’m not sure if they’ll lean into him developing his UM yet (unless they pull a chapter 5 and really start addressing Ace in the latter half of the chapter like they did with Deuce). Seeing as chapter 6 is dealing with a lot of heavy topics (death, Grim lore, Overblot lore), I’m thinking maybe the TWST team will push off Ace’s UM development to chapter 7???? The only way I can see it happening in chapter 6 is if the chapter is SUPER long, or if the writing is REALLY good or really bad.
Anyway, I’m keeping my fingers crossed!!! I’m so excited for the rest of chapter 6... I hope that we don’t have to wait too long for it!

omg no please ramble about hoshi some more! i will sit and listen so intently <3 i love talking about my bias but even more so listening to others talk about theirs 😭 [photos are always welcome and loved 👀] -🐯🎁
hi hi <333 i am so sorry for the late reply 😭 i wanted to give you a proper response so i waited to answer this ask shdjsdhsj but i appreciate that you'd be interested in me rambling about hoshi more 🥺 i'm going to leave my rambling under the cut because it got kinda long lol
who is your bias, out of curiosity? feel free to ramble about them if you wish <333 i'd love to hear it hehe
so i'm a very new carat sgdhsjhdsjk i became one during hot era!!! i remember watching the premiere for hot with my sister and really loving the song, which was the reason i started to slip into the diamond life <333 that night i listened to the album several times, and i was literally in love <333 and so i woke up the next morning and started watching some of the new content svt had put out that day, like the first performance of hot at a music show, etc. one the videos from that day was this one - a pixid video, this one being "find the maknae among the first borns (feat. hoshi of seventeen)."
tbh before i watched this video, i really had no idea who hoshi was SHDSHDJ because before i got into svt, my bias was woozi (since he was the only member i really knew). but i was curious about the video so i ended up watching it essentially knowing absolutely nothing about hoshi. AND THE PIXID VIDEO IS SO FUNNY. i love it so much. i remember laughing so hard at it sdhhjhshdjsk and after i watched that video, i got more curious about hoshi. so i started watching compilations about him!!! this one in particular ("hoshi's endless tiger agenda") is my absolute favorite. i've rewatched it so much lol because this video is how i discovered hoshi's tiger agenda. AND HES JUST SO CUTE I LOVE HIM SO MUCH <333
and ofc i watched spider as well!!!! i already knew the song prior to this, but i didn't really appreciate it until after i got into svt lol and now i love it lots <333 in my quest to learn more about hoshi, i also watched all of spider's behind the scenes content shdsdhsjk. it made me love hoshi even more 😭😭😭
and so at this point i was having a bias crisis LOL because i had assumed my bias would still be woozi once i got into svt - but clearly that wasn't the case LMAO and now hoshi is my belovedest <333 i should also note that all of this happened in the span of 3 days. hot came out on a friday, and by tuesday, i was a changed girl (aka a carat and a horangdan SHDSHDJ). and i just. love hoshi sm <333 he's such an integral part of svt - they wouldn't be where they are rn without him. he is one of the best dancers in kpop (the best in my heart tbh) and he is so sweet and kind and caring and he's a great person to the rest of the members.
and honestly like. i love my other biases but if i had to pick between my ults (who are jihyo from twice, yujin from ive, and kazuha from le sserafim respectively), i'd pick hoshi. idk why. i love my other ults so much for their own reasons but hoshi,,,,,,,,, atm he just makes me super happy sghdjhsdjks like i was watching his hot fancams yesterday and was absolutely in awe of him. maybe the reason i would pick him has to do with the fact that he's the only male idol i ult lol. but yeah. he means the world to me <333 i'm so so so glad i discovered svt and discovered hoshi, because honestly idk what i would've done if i hadn't lol.
BUT ANYWAYS if you read through all of this i super appreciate it <333 i don't expect you to because this is just me word dumping before i go to sleep shjdshdjsjd but i appreciate you letting me ramble regardless 🥺

(My Very Own) Top 20 Sterek Fics
Here is my very own Top 20 Sterek Fics (out of order)
For me, these fanfictions are a “MUST READ NOW!!!” kind of deal. These authors have so much talent, it’s incredible. These stories are just marvelous and deserve LOVE ! So, I decided to share them with you.
I’ve read most of these fics several times and some of them are even my bedside table books (with Harry Potter and the Prisonner of Azcaban and Jane Eyre)
So here we go!
1:  Enemy Lines by @qhuinn -  150k - Explicit - Dystopia - Enemies to friends to lovers - Action/adventure
This is the story of werewolf Derek Hale and human Stiles Stilinski: two people who grew up in the same town but completely different worlds, their realities split by the war between men and wolves.
Years later when Derek returns to Beacon Hills, he does it as Alpha of a military pack on a mission to capture those responsible for the region’s resistance. With his main objective, Sheriff Stilinski, out of sight, he settles for the next best thing: his son, Stiles.
Neither of them suspects they’ll need to trust each other if they want to make it out this alive.
2:  Actions Speak Louder than Words by @isthatbloodonhisshirt - 435k - Explicit - The BEST and slowest burn there is - Spark Stiles/Mute Derek - Friends to Lovers
“I apologize.” The cop finally looked back up at his face, seeming thrilled. “It’s just—it’s been so long. And we finally have you.”
That was a bad word. Not found.
Have.
Stiles wrenched his hand free and took a step back, but before he could even think up a gameplan, he felt a prick in his neck and jerked away, reaching up to slap one hand against it and twisting in the same moment.
One of the others had come up behind him while he hadn’t been paying attention, and his vision began to swim even as his eyes caught sight of the half-empty syringe the guy was holding.
3: Radio Tower by @hyperlittlenori - 130k - Explicit - Dystopia - Hope - Slow Burn/Build
Everything was different. The world he knew was gone. It’d been a long time since he’d started thinking he was probably one of the last humans on earth, that out there the only sentient beings were those that would devour him whole. He wasn’t sure why he continued with the radio broadcasts, continued to talk into nothingness. The only explanation was that there was a spark of hope in him yet that he wasn’t alone. The lonely safety Stiles has built around an old radio tower in the middle of nowhere is about to be broken. Stiles isn’t sure if Derek is a harbinger of chaos or hope at the end of the world.
4:  The Hollow Moon by @thepsychicclam - 180k - Explicit - Fix-It - Memory Loss - Slow Burn/Build
It's the summer after Stiles' first year of college, and he's working a crappy job and dealing with nightmares and anxiety - but he's okay, he swears. He makes it through most days without too much trouble. Then, a certain werewolf comes back into town. Which Stiles doesn't care about, nope, not at all.
After two and a half years, Derek returns to Beacon Hills with his small Pack. Though he tried to move on, something just kept drawing him back to Beacon Hills, he's just not sure what. Now, he figures he can start building something like a life - but he keeps getting distracted by Stiles Stilinski of all people.
5 :  Amor Fati by @alocalband  - 43k - Explicit - Consent is sexy - First Time - Fluff & Angst
When Stiles gets thrown into the bank vault about twenty minutes after him, Derek isn’t even surprised. As it turns out, neither is Stiles.
6 :  (not so) Pure Imagination by theroguesgambit - 33k - Explicit - Shared fantasies - Angst with a happy ending - hotdamn!
"There is a world where whenever someone fantasizes about you, you can physically feel it, but you have no idea who is thinking it about you."
Stiles knows it's wrong, but he's been Fantasizing about Derek and he can't bring himself to stop. Derek doesn't know who's taken an interest in him, but he's enjoying it way more than he probably should.
7: What I Did On My Summer Vacation by grimm - 119k - Explicit - Wolf!Derek - Slow Burn/Build - Friends to Lovers
There's something weird about Beacon Hills that Stiles can't quite put his finger on. The way everyone in town knows his name the day he arrives. The way they insist the melancholic howling that echoes through the forest every night is just a dog. The way his dad denies getting a dog, even though Stiles comes home to find one sprawled across his bed, some big black thing whose eyes gleam red in the right light. The way that massive oak tree out in the woods vibrates under his touch, pulsing with sickly life.
There's something weird going on in this town, and Stiles is determined to get to the bottom of it.
8:  Stand Fast in Your Enchantments by @devildoll - 77k - Explicit - Captivity - Feral!Derek - Angst with a happy ending
"Stiles knew damn well what a pissed-off wolf sounded like, and every hair on the back of his neck was telling him that somewhere in this room was a very pissed-off werewolf." An AU in which Derek is feral, Stiles is magical, and they eat a lot of fast food.
9 :  What Fresh Twilight Bullshit Is This? by @isthatbloodonhisshirt - 196k - Explicit - Soulmate - Slow Burn - Misunderstandings
“I am not Bella!” he insisted, shaking his fist angrily at Jackson, as if he’d been the one to suggest he was. “I am not Bella! I am, like, a Jacob, at least!”
Lydia made a noise of debate from his right and he whipped around to look at her.
“What?! What was that sound?!”
“You’re more of a Mike,” she insisted, shrugging neatly and flipping some curls over her shoulder.
“Wha—” Stiles had never been so offended in his life! “I am not! No way! I am a solid Jacob!”
“Mike,” she argued.
“Who’s Mike?” Scott asked.
“Shut up, Scott!” Stiles insisted, pointing a finger at him but still glaring at Lydia.
10 :  taste your beating heart by @cinematicnomad - 112k - Mature - Pack Dynamics - Slow Burn/Build - Stilinski Family Feels
Something was wrong in Beacon Hills. Derek was halfway across the country when he felt a call to return to his hometown, and somehow Stiles had been talked into letting the werewolf stay in his guest bedroom. This could lead to nothing good.
11 :  between the click of the light and the start of the dream by @thepsychicclam 105k - Explicit - Pack Dynamics - Getting Togheter - Fluff & Angst
A twig snaps, and then Stiles hears breathing and the rustle of leaves. He strains to get a better glimpse into the darkness, but it’s pointless. There’s nothing but a black void.
It's Stiles' senior year, and he's trying to concentrate on normal things - like the lacrosse championship, spring break, prom, graduation (and definitely not Derek) - when he starts having nightmares and waking up in the middle of nowhere. Oh yeah, and he's being haunted by a hag. Great.
12:  And You Say You're Alone by taelynhawker - 30k - Explicit - Pack Dynamincs - Bad Friend Scott - Romance
Between the kanima, the Argents, and Peter's untimely return from the dead, everything has fallen apart. Stiles and Derek try to put their lives back together once the crisis has passed. Stiles deals with the aftermath of being tortured, and the distance growing between he and Scott. Derek attempts to become a stronger alpha and keep his pack safe, and that includes Stiles.
13:  Trust Fall by Stoney - 144k - Explicit - Body Swap - Hurt/Confort - Slow Burn/Build
Stiles is fairly certain that a case could be made for every bad thing in his life coming back to Peter Hale. This time it's pissing off a powerful witch, who retaliated by swapping Stiles and Derek a la Freaky Friday, because sure. That makes sense. Um, there are GPAs on the line, not to mention the whole thing where his dad wants to shoot Derek on sight. Except who he sees as Derek is actually Stiles, and Stiles did not sign up for filicide.
Great. Wait...does this mean he's the Alpha until they figure this out? Holy. Shit.
****
Derek had stood in front of the bathroom mirror for a few minutes trying to control the panic as he saw himself as Stiles. As the loud mouthed human friend of the pack. He was going to kill Peter. He was going to kill the witch, then he was going to kill Peter. Maybe even resurrect him again just to kill him all over.
They were going to have to play this cool. They would have to stay calm and focused. Which is of course why the universe threw him into this situation with someone who physically couldn't be calm and focused.
Of course.
14:  Gravity's Got Nothing on You by @zosofi - 84k - Explicit - Fake/Pretend Boyfriends - Humor - Romance
“Three weeks,” Derek says.
“Still don’t want to,” Stiles says.
“I’ll pay you,” Derek says, and that… that has Stiles interested. Alf’s Antique’s may be a great job, but it’s not a high-paying job, and half of Stiles’s tuition is coming from financial aid, so…
“How much,” Stiles asks, “are we talking here? Because I know your family, dude. And it’ll be kind of awkward after.“
“My family thinks you’re some sort of fucking gift to the world,” Derek seethes, like he’s jealous, “they’ll probably be pissed at me when we break it off, so don’t worry about that. Five hundred bucks.”
“A thousand,” Stiles says, because screw ethics. Also, the Hale family is loaded. Derek can deal.
15:  Every Step You Take by @nokomiss - 49k - Mature - Magic - UST - Secret Feelings
Stiles accidentally ends up magically bound to Derek. It’s super.
16:  Baking My Way Into Your Heart by theSilence - 179k - Mature - College AU/Coffee Shop AU - Slow Burn/Build - Friends to Lovers
Derek is an uptight college student, all work and no play. His carefully scheduled life is thrown kilter when his regular barista is replaced with someone new.
17:  Windows by @drgrlfriend - 83k - Explicit - Blind!Stiles - Friends to Lovers - Found Families
Derek has a new neighbor who won't stop looking.
Excerpt:
“You’re blind,” Derek said flatly, the anger draining from him so suddenly he felt almost woozy. His vision cleared, his claws sliding back into blunt fingernails.
“Thanks for the memo, genius,” the kid said acidly. “I can still fucking defend myself, so don’t take another damn step.”
“Fuck, I...I’m sorry,” Derek stuttered.
“What?!” The kid’s brow crinkled. “I mean — what?! You’re fucking sorry!?” His lips thinned into a harsh line. “What, is this some kinda Hallmark movie where you’re discovering the error of your ways because you don’t want to rob a blind person?! That’s fucking condescending, man. I’ll have you know that —”
“Just, wait.” Derek interrupted what was apparently the start of a convincing argument as to why he should rob the kid after all, feeling his head start to spin. “This is — it’s a misunderstanding. I’m — I’m not robbing you. You’re — you’re safe, okay? I’m taking three steps back. Just — just let me explain.”
“Explain why you came busting into my apartment? Yeah, go right ahead, man, I can’t wait to hear this epic tale.”
18 :  Just to See You Again by MellytheHun (@loserchildhotpants) - 15k - Explicit - Love Letters - Getting Together - College AU
A sterek college!AU where writing student Stiles specializes in love letters, runs a blog about it and can be commissioned to write love letters on behalf of lovers who are at a loss for words.
He makes some cash, he’s good at what he does (especially when he gets to be a little more explicit in his letters), it pays for his textbooks and that’s all he’s really looking for and life is fine. That is, until someone anonymously commissions him to write a love letter to mathematics student, Derek Hale.

Inhuman blue eyes follow his silent struggles in the darkness of the room and he can no longer pretend to sleep, pretend he hasn’t been profoundly changed by all that has happened. Introducing The Front ’s New Romance Advice Columnist: Miss Soju!
We all have an ideal: an ideal type, an ideal first date, an ideal relationship. The problem is love isn’t ideal at all. And sooner or later, we find ourselves sitting on that plastic chair in that tent on the side of the road with an ache in our chest. You’re hurt, confused, and kind of going crazy-- all the tell-tale symptoms of heartbreak are there. And the only cure? Soju, of course!
Finding a decent partner and maintaining a healthy, sustainable relationship is difficult enough as it is. Then layer it with the culture shock of university, where you’re experiencing actual adulthood for the first time without mommy and daddy to hold your hand. It’s enough to make anyone lose their minds! Sure, you could always turn to your friends for support and advice, but in all honesty, they’re even more of a mess than you are.
That’s why Mansae University’s affiliate newspaper, The Front, will be reviving our romance advice column this fall! Each week, Miss Soju will be answering all your burning questions, and that means all of them. Her expertise touches on topics as simple as explaining to that one guy that your love is fated because you passed each other at Yuhaeng Quad, like three times, and extends to more extreme situations that require an anonymous veil, like how to confess to your new boyfriend with the furry fetish that you’ve been severely allergic to animals since you were three and you have no idea how any animals act, let alone… Yikes.
It’s true, college is full of new and bizarre experiences, some we must go through and some we’d much rather avoid. Who knows? Maybe you’ll meet the love of your life here. But it’s okay to admit that you need a little guidance through the mystical and confusing world of college dating. Miss Soju has got your back, and she’s not afraid to hit you with that real shit. As she always says, good advice is like taking a shot: sweet on the lips but burns your throat as you swallow it down.

“Jihoon, I don’t know if I can do this.”
Name: So Joohyun. Major: Journalism major with a minor in communications. Estimated graduation year: 2021. Desired position: World News Journalism Intern. That was what she had put on her application for The Front’s junior internship program. She had made sure to attach her published articles and to emphasize her interest in-- no, her passion for-- reporting compelling stories on an international scale. Not once in her application did she indicate that she was an expert in love or sex, let alone qualified to give others advice on the subjects! In fact, she was probably the least qualified person on campus for this position, which was probably the most perplexing aspect of the whole situation.
But despite all of that, there she was, sitting in Yuhaeng Quad with her best friend, reading the promo piece she had written for Miss Soju. Jihoon had been ecstatic when he had thought of the nickname back in high school. She had snuck bottles of the alcohol over to his house one night after finals week, and he had drunkenly claimed that the name was doubly clever since So-ju were also the first two syllables in her name. When the newspaper had told her she needed an anonymous pen name, it was the only thing she could think of, mostly because creating a secret identity had made her in desperate need of a drink. She changed her mind. Having a secret identity was equally as perplexing as pretending to know how to spice up people’s sex lives. It was like she was some kind of Love Spiderman. She was not ready for that kind of great power or the great responsibility that came with it!
“‘I don’t know if I can do this’?” Jihoon repeated her words slowly. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard you say those words in that order. Can I take your picture? I need to commemorate this moment.”
“Can’t you see that I am having a crisis?” she whined. “The integrity of my career is on the line because I’ve never bothered to go on a date!”
“When are you not having a crisis?” Jihoon laughed. He sat up from lying down on their picnic tarp to give her full view of his smug grin. Originally, he had dragged Joohyun outside in hopes that the perfect summer weather would help relieve some of her stress from the past week. He even found her favorite spot under the shade of an ancient tree that overlooked the stretch of green field. But Jihoon could not call himself a proper best friend if he passed on an opportunity to rub all of this in her face. “This is what you get for chickening out on all our group blind dates! I could have scored that hot bassist girl with the thigh tattoo, but nooo, you always had to put your career first.”
“Sue me for having priorities!” she huffed. Leave it to Jihoon to chalk this all up to karma. Now that he mentioned it though, she couldn’t help but feel like a higher power was taking a piss on her life. Or maybe it was just the shit-eating smile on Jihoon’s face that had her on edge. Joohyun tried to avert her focus to a couple of boys tossing a frisbee around instead, but somehow that irked her too. The idyllic weather, the carefree students, everything that was pleasant seemed to mock her sour mood. She pouted at the ground in defeat, and continued, “You are the first person to know that if I was told that dating and fucking around were going to be crucial to my journey to becoming South Korea’s top journalist by the time I turn 25, I would have become a hoe long ago.”
“Woah, are you gonna start your thot phase for this? Are we gonna have a hot girl summer?” The boy began to bounce excitedly. Joohyun felt it was high time to give him the finger, but she also felt a small smile tugging at her frown. “Easier said than done, though. Remember Jessi from high school?”
“Yeah I remember,” she said with a sigh. High school romance had lured so many of her friends into its clutches, with its enticing promises of sweet chocolates and stuffed animals, and she had helplessly watched from the top of the class as they forsook their grades for boys who didn’t even know what deodorant was. She only shuddered to think of the state of their grades after a nasty break up. It was then that Joohyun had decided that her future was not worth risking over a boy’s attention. “Which is exactly why I never got involved in all that mess in the first place.”
“This must be the gods telling you that it’s time to.”
“What kind of fucked up god sets up a virgin as a love advice columnist?” she asked the sky loudly. If she had known there was anyone listening, she would have insisted that her question was rhetorical and was not in need of any type of response! However, the gods cared not for grammar technicalities on the mortal plane. They just couldn’t resist the chance to respond to someone so openly questioning their decisions with some good ol’ spite. Honestly, with the way things were going for her lately, Joohyun probably should have expected the frisbee flying merrily towards her face, even if she hadn’t just challenge the universe.
“Oh fuck!” Joohyun jerked out of the way and felt the frisbee thunk against her shoulder instead. “Ow.” At this point, she didn’t even have the capacity to be annoyed; she just braced herself for whatever misfortune life threw at her next.
“Sorry about that!” A boy called out, jogging up to them. As he came into clearer view, she noted that he looked far from misfortunate, and also had to remind herself that staring was rude even if someone was unnaturally handsome. His features were soft yet striking, like he had been carefully sculpted from cotton candy. Or maybe a fluffy rain cloud? Joohyun shook her head a little as if that would get her to stop staring so shamelessly. She speculated whether it was the sun that made it look like his blond hair was a glowing halo. Okay seriously, stop staring! He gave Joohyun a sweet smile when he reached them. “My friend got a bit distracted. Now that I’m here, I can’t say that I blame him. Hope we didn’t do too much damage!”
“Uh,” was her captivating reply.
Jihoon, never one to miss such a ripe opportunity, piped up beside her. “She’ll be fine. This is Joohyun, by the way.”
His smile widened at Woozi’s introduction, and Joohyun could swear there was an actual twinkle in his eyes. “Nice to meet you both. I’m--”
“Yoon Jeonghan!” They all looked towards the call. The ethereal boy let out a startlingly loud cackle at the sight of his friend, who gave the two strangers a sheepish wave before continuing to gesture for Jeonghan to return. Joohyun must have been put in a staring mood, because she didn’t miss how his friend’s big ears were a shade of pink and how they bloomed into a cherry red when they briefly made eye contact. She caught herself wondering if all the boys at Mansae University were always this cute.
“I guess I better go,” the boy named Jeonghan shrugged. Joohyun felt his fingers brush against hers when he took the frisbee from her hand, his eyes glinting mischievously. Now she was sure she was seeing things. “See you two around!”
They both watched him retreat in an awestruck silence. That was certainly… unanticipated. Even long after Jeonghan and his friend were out of sight, the brief encounter left a blanket of fogginess lingering over them. Had she not felt his fingers on hers, Joohyun would have easily believed that it had all been in her head. At the same time, she was pretty sure that she wasn’t bold enough to conjure up someone that looked like that on her own. As she continued to fathom how a human being could glow, Joohyun felt the fog dissipate into the warm summer air. She felt like she was waking up from a disorienting dream, and she blinked to hasten the process. To her growing bewilderment, she found that her heartbeat was steady as she came back to her senses, her mind seemingly devoid of the panic and doubt that had plagued her all week. It was a gasp of fresh air.
Jihoon, on the other hand, had long broken free from the strong impression that the blond boy made. He noted the dazed look on his best friend’s face and rolled his eyes. Who knew that a pretty boy was all it took to make her shut up a bit? He nudged Joohyun impatiently, so that she could pay attention to him while he roasted her for totally flubbing her chances.  “You thinking of risking it all for that guy?”
In an instant, Joohyun slammed herself back into reality just to shove Jihoon away from her. “That is so not happening,” she said a little too indignantly. Before Jihoon could reassure her that the guy seemed interested enough even though she had only said a single syllable to him, Joohyun suddenly turned to him very seriously. “Do you really think I  can do it, Jihoon?”
“What, bang that guy? I can try calling him back here if you want,” he snickered.
“You know what I mean!”
“Okay sorry, I couldn’t resist,” Jihoon replied, his grin now melting into a familiar smile, the one that could put her at ease on her lowest days. “I just don’t know why you have to ask. You and I both know that you kick ass at writing. You’ve written about stuff like natural disasters and the student protests, no problem at all. It’s not like you have a PhD in environmental science or politics. How is this any different? ”
Joohyun scrunched her face as if Jihoon had just suggested that chocolate milk came from brown cows. “Dude, they’re completely different. Those articles were reporting on facts. I did research, I conducted interviews!”
“That’s what I’m saying, Joo!” Jihoon exclaimed suddenly. As smart as she was, he couldn’t help getting a little giddy whenever he thought of a good idea before her. “Why not treat Miss Soju like any other of your other projects? I mean, love is probably one of the most well-documented experiences throughout history, and people are still going through all the same shit. There’s probably thousands of resources for a man simping on a hot chick alone. You can even take your pick, like movies, songs, books, weird couples on Youtube? You don’t need to have experience, because you can just do the research! ”
“Research?” Joohyun repeated. If there was one thing that she was good at, it was doing the work. From the moment she had decided to become a journalist, everything she had done was a strategic move to get her closer to her end goal. She had spent sleepless nights perfecting the details of her writing, countless hours reading through endless archives of old articles. Hell, she even restricted herself from dating for years just so she could focus on keep her grades up. It was almost too easy of a solution. Maybe she was meant to do this after all.
Another couple of months of research would simply be another hurdle on her way to the finish line and she was getting closer and closer. Finally, she felt a smile spread across her cheeks, a real, genuine smile. “I… I can do that.”
“Now that,” Jihoon said as he took her hand in his, pulling her up to her feet, “sounds like So Joohyun. Or should I say Miss Soju?”
She laughed as she dusted the grass off of her butt. “You know, it’s probably not a good idea to include the first part of my name in my anonymous persona. It makes it so obvious that it’s me.”
“Yeah, I mean it would be obvious if people actually knew who you were in the first place,” Jihoon scoffed, narrowly dodging a kick from her. “That’s a good thing for you! Anyway, let’s get out of here, I have a couple of tweaks to make to my song before releasing it tonight. Could you listen to it by the way? I need to know if it’s too cheesy.”
“Oh, the song you’re writing about your mystery muse?” Joohyun hummed playfully while packing up their blanket. She followed after her best friend as he began the short climb uphill. “I don’t know if I want to, you’ve been pretty out of pocket today.”
“Hey!” he said defensively. “First: I don’t need a muse for my songs, I just have a very vivid imagination and my talent does the rest. Second: I literally just stopped you from giving up on your lifelong dream of becoming a journalist, so I think you owe me one. You’re just jealous I can write love songs without having an existential crisis.”
“See, that is what I mean by out of pocket,” she paused for a beat. “I may be willing to listen to your song. For a small price, of course.”
“Okay, deal,” he agreed without hesitation, missing the way Joohyun deviously smirked beside him. They reached the concrete pavement at top of the hill and headed in the direction of his nearby apartment. “What is it this time, Ms. So?”
“Well Mr. Lee, thanks to your lovely suggestion earlier, I have been inspired to begin work immediately. So we shall be watching Twilight on movie night,” she said all too gleefully, mostly for satisfaction that Jihoon’s twisted face of disgust gave her.
“Do we have to?” he groaned.
 “It’s for my research!”

TV of 2020
1) I May Destroy You
Tumblr media
I May Destroy You might not have been written during the pandemic, but when it arrived in June it felt like the sort of complicated, cathartic show that could have been.  Detailing one woman’s experience of rape and its aftermath, Michaela Coel (who wrote every episode) continually found rich narrative avenues in which to explore her characters’ individual experiences of sexual assault and consent.  If that makes the series sound concept-driven, it always placed its characters first; the push-and-pull between Arabella, Terry and Kwame is key to the ways in which Coel’s tender, curious writing is able to explore power dynamics within relationships, friendships and hook-ups.  Other, lesser shows that are this deliberately open-ended might feel opaque: it’s testament to the show’s confidence of voice that isn’t the case here.
2) Normal People
Tumblr media
Like plenty of others, I binged the entire series of Normal People in a weekend, although one of its many pleasures is how Sally Rooney and Alice Birch’s adaptation teases out the episodic nature of the former’s bestseller.  From Connell’s early days at university, to a Tuscan holiday turned sour, and an exchange year in Sweden, Normal People was about the ways in which the people we love move in and out of our lives over the years.  It wasn’t immune to mis-steps (the show draws something of a crude line between the abuse Marianne suffers at home and what she seeks out in romantic partners), but the sheer emotional heft of the show was undeniable, nowhere less so than Paul Mescal’s floodgate-opening performance in Episode 10.
3) Adult Material
Tumblr media
Perhaps one of the year’s most overlooked shows, Adult Material follows Hayley Burrows as she attempts to balance life as the harassed mother-of-three and the twilight years of her career as adult performer Jolene Dollar.  The slyly comic edge of the first episode is quickly eroded after Jolene becomes embroiled in the abuse of another actor on-set.  A stark portrait of alcohol abuse and loneliness, it’s also a sharp indictment of how little the so-called ‘culture wars’ surrounding pornography are meaningfully impactful on sex workers themselves.  Hayley Squires gives the sort of white-hot star performance usually reserved for 90s Hollywood rom-coms, a veneer of frustration and resignation overlaying even her character’s most abrasive moments.
4) Cook, Eat, Repeat
Tumblr media
Why not in this interminably shitty year, choose the one show that offered the sort of balm it’s impossible to reverse engineer?  Following hot on the heels of a disappointing series of The Great British Bake-Off, Nigella Lawson’s warm, inviting half-hour new series was the televisual equivalent of a long bath and a facemask.  Her fish finger bhorta, brown butter colcannon and black pudding meatballs have already made it into this household’s repertoire, but there’s something innately comforting about the luxurious silliness of Nigella that almost transcends criticism.  Whether it’s the giddy nonsense of her liquorice box, the ‘did I hear that right’ moment when she revealed her pronunciation of ‘microwave,’ or the seductive self-care of making a creme caramel for one, no other show elicited such pure enjoyment from me this year.
5) I’ll Be Gone In The Dark
Tumblr media
The true crime documentary series boom has increasingly leaned into a focus on the victims, from last year’s The Yorkshire Ripper Files to Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich, but none so effectively or compassionately as I’ll Be Gone In The Dark.  Less a story about the hunt for the Golden State Killer and more a study of trauma and obsession, the series splices together home footage of the late Michelle McNamara’s investigation with survivor testimony to create a haunting portrait of one man’s legacy of pain.  The early episodes are replete with skin-crawling tension, anguish and tears, but the later episodes allow that to fall away, focusing on the mental fortitude necessary for the survivors at its centre and the sense of community fostered by meeting other women like them.
6)The Salisbury Poisonings
Tumblr media
I had no interest in watching this BBC limited series initially: the advertising made it look dry, the story itself (the Novichok poisonings of 2018) seemingly devoid of juicy narrative material.  That I’ve watched this three times in the space of a year speaks to its robust, urgent filmmaking.  Like several other shows on this list, it arrived into the context of a pandemic it couldn’t have foreseen, but watching the rapid, careful response of local government (crucially and deliberately obstructed by Whitehall) to this crisis presented a sort of horribly watchable what-if scenario.  What seemed at first blush to be middle-of-the-road programming evolved over three episodes into the sort of spare, quietly terrifying journalistic drama that invites comparison to last year’s Chernobyl.
7) We Are Who We Are
Tumblr media
It turns out that Luca Guadagnino’s woozy, seductive style transfers perfectly to television, and despite We Are Who We Are lacking the timelessness that typifies I Am Love or Call Me By Your Name it thrillingly captured the turbulent adolescence of its teenage characters.  Equally effervescent and raggedly emotional, the show’s joy always felt hard-won, bumping heads with the often cynical, unreadable motivations of the adult characters.  A tender and frank depiction of queer identities within traditionally restrictive environments, it’s also a love letter to young friendship and the lifeline that can provide during our formative years.  Spellbinding.
8) Selling Sunset
Tumblr media
Perhaps the year’s most impressively constructed reality show, I was slow on the uptake with Netflix’s Selling Sunset only to have it take over my life for a few weeks during the summer.  Manufactured reality series are tough to get right, but much like The Hills (surely this show’s biggest influence) Selling Sunset gains a lot of mileage from gaming pre-existing friendships for maximum impact.  Christine and Mary’s beleaguered relationship and, obliquely, their respective responses to fame continued to provide wildly watchable fireworks, but the build-up to Chrishell’s separation from husband Justin Hartley was exquisitely handled.  Suddenly Davina’s strangely uncharismatic shit-stirrer and Christine’s predictably OTT wedding were forced to take a back seat to something approaching genuinely moving television.  Trying to tease out what was real and what wasn’t, and following the ways this all spilled out onto social media, was pure, unmitigated pleasure in a year sorely lacking in just that sort of unfettered escapism.
9) My Brilliant Friend
Tumblr media
Two seasons in and there might not be another character on TV that I’m as continually frustrated and fascinated by as Lila, the eponymous ‘brilliant friend’ of the show’s title.  Sparingly warm, often cruel, seductive, Season 2 of HBO’s masterful adaptation sees her trapped in a loveless, abusive marriage but as ever it’s her fractured relationship with Lenù that forms the emotional spine of the show.  There’s often a strange sort of snobbery around the term ‘prestige drama,’ as if all that money on the screen is a smokescreen for a dearth of anything to say; My Brilliant Friend uses every colour in its paintbox to portray the yawning void that opened up between Lenù and Lila as they entered adulthood, from the lavish, provocative outfits Lila’s adopts after she marries Stefano to Max Richter’s evocative score and the detail poured into the show’s supporting characters.  Rewardingly complex.
10) Mrs. America
Tumblr media
I laboured over what would take my tenth spot this year since there was so much TV that I loved, and especially this year so much of it felt essential to how I was receiving the world around me.  Ultimately, Mrs. America’s mixture of astute political commentary, character-driven writing and host of enjoyable performances tipped the scale in its favour.  Cate Blanchett’s all-timer of a performance as Phyllis Schafly understandably received the majority of attention, but Mrs. America gave us so many memorable moments: Sarah Paulson’s Alice ringing the bell at reception whilst high, Uzo Aduba’s Shirley Chisholm speaking to a potentially bugged hotel ventilator, Margo Martindale’s Bella Abzug quietly realising she’s no longer the radical of her youth on a busy New York street.  This sort of deft, smart political drama isn’t often this much fun to watch, and what an ending...
11) This Life
Tumblr media
An honourable mention to a show made almost twenty-five years ago that nevertheless helped define the year in TV for me.  Shows that were once considered part of the zeitgeist can often feel quaint and old-fashioned in retrospect, but Amy Jenkins rambunctious flatshare drama isn’t one of them.  Whilst it can sometimes feel like the show’s characters are universally adverse to making even one good decision between them, there’s a compassion and care underpinning This Life that means it never comes across as overly cynical or sneering.  There’s also a lot to be said for discovering a performance that you genuinely consider to be one of the best of the decade, and no other character this year frustrated and moved me in the ways that Daniela Nardini’s Anna did.  Bonus points for the genuinely chaotic final episode, perhaps one of the best I’ve ever seen.
And FWIW, these are ten performances from shows not on the list above that I loved this year: Marielle Heller in The Queen’s Gambit, Nicholas Hoult in The Great, Sarah Lancashire in Last Tango in Halifax, Poorna Jagannathan in Never Have I Ever, Michael Sheen in Quiz, Imelda Staunton in Talking Heads, Leila Farzad in I Hate Suzie, Alison Pill in Star Trek: Picard, Gillian Anderson in The Crown and Andy Allo in Upload.
And ten episodes of TV that I loved too: ‘Terry and Korvo Steal a Bear’ (Solar Opposites), ‘The Gang Deals With Alternate Reality’ (The Good Fight), ‘Uncle Naseem’ (Ramy), ‘The View From Halfway Down’ (Bojack Horseman), ‘The Vat of Acid Episode’ (Rick and Morty), ‘I Am’ (Lovecraft Country), ‘No Small Parts’ (Star Trek: Lower Decks), Seven-Spotted Ladybug’ (Everything’s Gonna Be Okay), ‘Daytona’ (Cheer), ‘Whenever You’re Ready’ (The Good Place).

Top 10 Films of 2018
This is rather delayed (mainly on account of an extended bout of laziness on my part), but I was still determined to get it out there! While I don’t think 2018 quite reached the heights of 2017 (nothing matched The Last Jedi or Blade Runner 2049, for example), there was still a lot of great cinema.
As always, keeping this list at 10 meant I had to omit some great titles. Just so you get an idea of what I had to leave out, here are some honourable mentions: Eighth Grade, Lady Bird, Revenge, Phantom Thread, Thoroughbreds, Lean on Pete and Game Night.
1. Roma, dir. Alfonso Cuarón
Tumblr media
Roma is a deeply special film, and I’m very fortunate in having got to see it in the best possible circumstances - projected on a huge cinema screen, with its gorgeous, silvery cinematography a marvel to witness. This film takes the kind of life that would usually be forgotten and turns it into an epic, interweaving the story of a loving, resilient housemaid with the seismic political events unfolding in Mexico in the early 1970s. The shots are highly symmetrical and geometric, with characters passing in and out of pre-established frames. But this is clearly intentional, and - to me at least - the story felt no less personal for it. There are several all-time great scenes in this film, and while I don’t want to spoil any of them with extended descriptions, I will say that there’s a sequence in a hospital that balances the mundane and the monumental in an extraordinary and heartbreaking way. This is breathtaking, masterful filming, and I felt it did justice to Cleo’s life without ever attempting to claim her experience. The film is quiet and the dialogue is almost perfunctory, relying heavily on its visuals - it’s cinema at its purest.
2. Annihilation, dir. Alex Garland
Tumblr media
True story: I was so desperate to see Annihilation in a cinema that I flew to New York for it. Of course Annihilation wasn’t my sole reason for travelling to New York, but you can be damn sure I made a point of tracking down an Alamo Drafthouse that was showing it. And boy was it worth it. This movie does a magnificent job of fulfilling the potential of sci-fi, taking otherworldly concepts and ideas and using them to interrogate some of the most profound and frightening truths of what it means to be human. This movie has a quietly hypnotic quality to it, and Natalie Portman continues to prove that she is one of the finest modern actors - she says so much with her face and her movements that lines are hardly necessary. I will continue to follow Alex Garland’s career with great interest...
3. Beast, dir. Michael Pearce
Tumblr media
Beast was probably my biggest surprise in film in 2018 - I went in expecting nothing, and was bowled over by it to the point that I rushed out to see it again at the first opportunity. This film follows lonely outsider Moll and her ardent love for the mysterious Pascal. There is a heightened, almost supernatural, quality to their romance, and the actors - Jessie Buckley and Johnny Flynn - have electric chemistry. This film delights in playing with the viewer’s fears and suspicions, constantly adjusting them as the characters evolve over the course of the movie. It’s a great fusion of genres - mystery and romance - that also functions as a superb character piece, and it is entirely worth your time.
4. Bad Times at the El Royale, dir. Drew Goddard
Tumblr media
This film is bonkers in an amazing way. A bunch of seemingly random strangers gather at a hotel that’s far from its glory days, and it isn’t long before all hell breaks lose. The ensemble here is terrific, with all the cast members playing off each other in a succession of utterly delightful ways. Every character conceals a secret history and motive, with their layers gradually being peeled back as the movie plays out. Special mention must go to Cynthia Erivo, who is simply stupendous as a session singer who I wound up considering the film’s real hero - she’s marvellously charismatic and complex, and her voice is a complete wonder. This film is a messy tangle of mysteries, and I had a wonderful time unravelling them.
5. First Reformed, dir. Paul Schrader
Tumblr media
I have a weird soft spot for ‘crisis of faith’ movies (think Silence), and this is a very fine entry into that niche. Ethan Hawke is superb here as a priest attending to an old church that has effectively been reduced to a chintzy tourist attraction, and I found the depiction of how he struggles with his faith, overwhelmed by disillusionment and the immense crises facing the earth, fascinating and beautifully written. Schrader wrote and directed this film, and it is one of his greatest achievements - the dialogue probes deep, never feeling trite or obvious. I also appreciated how the spiritual was so often conflated with the personal, with a thin line drawn being drawn between the divine and the carnal (that end scene is a woozy thing to experience). It’s a beautifully judged film, made all the more fascinating for its ambiguity.
6. Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, dir. Morgan Neville
Tumblr media
The greatest testament to the power of this wonderful, good-hearted documentary is probably that I went into it knowing practically nothing about Mr Rodgers (he just wasn’t a thing here in the UK) and left it thinking he’s the hero the world needs right now. I’ve seen so many documentaries illuminating the ugliest parts of humanity that I didn’t realise how much I needed one spotlighting the best bits. But this documentary isn’t pure sentiment, though there’s a lot of that - I found a lot to admire in Mr Rodgers approach to child psychology and education, particularly his conviction that every child can benefit from a warm, steady presence, even of the source of the reassurance happens to be trapped in a TV monitor. I can only hope this inspires a fresh wave of documentaries on similarly worthy subjects.
7. The Wife, dir. Björn Runge
Tumblr media
Glenn Close is coming for that Best Actress Oscar and no one can convince me otherwise. With The Wife, the whole movie transparently rests on the shoulders of one woman - Close’s performance is almost sphinx-like, being enigmatic and low-key to the point that her emotions are almost invisible. But their failure to manifest doesn’t mean they don’t exist, and that is perhaps the point of the whole movie. Joan Castleman might seem like the ideal wife of a great author, but she is revealed to be far more than that - a singular individual with dreams, passions, ambitions and regrets. Glenn Close makes the gradual reveal of each facet magnetic, to the point that the slightest twinges of her facial muscles become potent symbols.
8. Blindspotting, dir.  Carlos López Estrada
Tumblr media
This is an urgent, gripping movie that tackles some of the biggest issues there are. Collin and Miles are friends, but this film sees their friendship challenged, the dynamics underlying it interrogated. I’ve seen movies described as “empathy machines” before, and Blindspotting is a great example of that. It sucks you into the day-to-day experience of living Collin’s life, whether he’s getting a window into the hang-ups of the people whose belongings he is moving (he drives a moving truck) or just chilling out with his friends. Alongside this, it also portrays how terrifying it is to live as a black man in America, how vanishingly little value appears to be placed on your life by those in authority. There’s a rap scene at the film’s climax that consolidates all of Collin’s rage and hurt, and it truly packs a punch.
9. American Animals, dir. Bart Layton
Tumblr media
This film portrays a very different side to young American manhood from Blindspotting. Instead of living from day to day, the protagonists of this film start out with pretty much everything they could need - stability, support and good prospects. They choose to unsettle their existence by staging an outrageous heist, clearly dreaming of becoming legends and injecting excitement into their comfortable lives. American Animals does a fantastic job of pulling their plan apart, and since it was based on a true story director Bart Layton does something quite ingenious - he combines real interviews with re-enactments, the filmed scenes being switched out and adjusted according to the conflicting testimonies. In this way, American Animals becomes much more then a depiction of entitled young men seeking to mythologise themselves - it also functions as an interrogation of truth, and the myriad deceptive qualities of cinema.
10. Mission Impossible: Fallout, dir. Christopher McQuarrie
Tumblr media
I have no idea how this franchise keeps on stepping up its game, but it does. It reminds me of how the James Bond films ended up taking Bond to space. I can see MI doing that at this point, except we all know that Tom Cruise would actually fly into space for it. With that prelude out of the way, I just need to stress what a fantastic action movie this is. The set-pieces here are marvellously staged, and their execution made them absolutely gripping - I was anxious over every punch, flinching at every cracked bone. McQuarrie is a true master of tension and suspense, and the movie was simply a magnificent ride. I was lucky enough to see this in IMAX with @bastila-bae, and the mere thought of people watching this on smartphones fills me with the rare kind of sorrow known only to shameless film snobs.
Look out for highlights from 2019 - coming up in a few months!

Nine Worlds - Friday
Thursday found [here]
After having had only a couple hours sleep, we got up and got ready for the day. Some of us took longer than others, and no that wasn’t me. @laalratty @knittedace and I went to get breakfast outside of costume and then went back to our rooms to get properly dressed. I also had a nap on the bed as the first session doesn’t start until 10am, which helped I think. But I did spend the rest of the day very tired.
EDUCATION AT HOGWARTS
The first panel I went to at the convention proper, and @unwoundbobbin was on it which was a bonus.
Tumblr media
It was a fun talk in which everyone agreed that education at Hogwarts is severely lacking, completely skips some very important subjects and really needs to look at quality of teaching.
As much as we are meant to root for Hogwarts and its independence, it’s an industry checking itself and what happens when people we don’t like are in charge? Someone said that it’s a great thing to show teachers who are fed up with having a curriculum and ofsted inspections. I agree. There was also a lot of talk that as much as muggle studies needs to be better and mandatory, there needs to be an introductory course for muggle raised students so they know what they’re getting into, the world they’re dumped in and so on. And, as a panelist pointed out, to better know all the shibboleths. She also mused that this may be exactly the reason they don’t do that and honestly, probably true.
ACE REPRESENTATION
So, I did a panel on a similar theme several years back and I was curious how this one would go. It took a different tone but times have moved. A lot of the panelists are relatively new to the community but then there was Nat Titman who is one of the founding persons of the asexual community.
I didn’t learn a lot, but it was nice to be in a room with a ton of aces talking about ace things. Aros talking about aro things. People still hating on Moffat for the crap he has spewed. Being inclusive aof aros and demis. Which I know for a fact meant a lot to some, as I was talking to a demi person at that meeting later that day who brought it up. I got to espouse my theory on how Yuuri Katsuki is so so very demi even if language, culture and censorship means it’ll never be explicitly canon.
Tumblr media
BSL FOR GEEKS
This was amazing! I know how to say thank you and ‘g’ and that is it. So this was pretty great. Aside from being able to tell you my name at the end, I was delighted to learn the sign for Star Trek is literally the Vulcan salute. I also learnt how to say ‘Space, the final frontier’ though I probably do it with a massive accent. I learnt that this is the new sign coming up for trans:
Tumblr media
...and tumblr provides a demonstration of this. Not video from the con.
Which is related to the sign for soul.  Also I learned the sign that’s becoming popular for queer which is a ‘q’ in the motion of a rainbow and it’s awesome.
There were lots of character names and phrases and there’s no way I’m going to remain most of it. And I had a weird hand thing going on that this made worse. So by the end of it, my hand hurt a fair bit. But it was fantastic. It was presented by a a group of interpreters and deaf people who bounced off of each other really well. One person even forgot how to spell their own name. But given a person who shall remain nameless forgot what their name even was at a different session? This isn’t the worst I heard of.
I really loved it, and this was one of my favourite sessions at the entire convention. I wanted to go to the after dark one for adults only, in which there’d be swearing, but alas I had to take care of my hand and so decided it was a no go.
EVERYBODY HATES MORAL PHILOSOPHERS: THE ETHICS OF THE GOOD PLACE
I’m a big fan of this show. I came across it on Netflix and then got my Mom into it and it is brilliant. It’s smart and funny and thinky all at once. This session was more of a lecture than a panel or workshop which fit, because the person giving it is a philosophy professor. Not a moral philosopher, but a philosopher.
It turns out that it isn’t so much that everyone hates moral philosophers, it’s just really hard to be one. But whilst we were waiting for the session to start I spotted a person in front of me dressed up as Janet. I asked to confirm and was told, perfectly in character that interesting fact, they were Janet. And proceeded to give me a cactus sticky note with a Janet phrase on it. I sent a photo and a test to my Mom who loved it.
Tumblr media
...I do have a picture, but didn’t ask permission to post on the internet so here is a close approximation minus cactus.
The lecture itself was pretty interesting. Turns out the writers are using real philosophy and real books and theories and the like when making the show. I can see how Chidi would get so anxious if he follows Kant. Even the text books given to Eleanor are ones the speaker has themselves and sees as foundational texts. So yay! She went through a few schools of philosophy that pop up in the show and it was fun.
Someone pointed out that it seemed that each of the human four seemed to be missing one of the classical virtues. The speaker agreed. There was lots of debate about fair or just the system in this show is, and also how much about it we can objectively know given Michael’s aim in the first season. I pointed out that the entire thing seemed to be unfair to those with disadvantages or some mental health conditions. The last episode of the latest season, without getting into spoilers too much, entirely takes advantage of things about two characters that they’ve no way of doing away with and/or find near impossible to control. It sucks. There seemed to be agreement on this. Privilege, it seems, exists in the systems of The Good Place as we currently know them.
ASSIMILATION AND IDENTITY IN STAR TREK
This was a session hosted by Jaime who some may know and is pretty awesome. I don’t always agree with them on everything but I do appreciate them. And I didn’t agree with a good amount of what was said here. Not that I think it’s wrong, just that some of it is a matter of perspective and assigning aims and motivations to characters that aren’t, to me, clear in canon. I tend to think Worf handed his son off to his parents because he never asked for a kid, didn’t know he had one, works a dangerous job, has no experience parenting and lives on a ship that goes through a major crisis on a fairly regular basis. But people can disagree.
There are some things about Trek that.... aren’t the best. The whole area around the Ferengi is a tricky area and a bit of a mess. I love them, I love the actors, I love some of their episodes, but there are anti-semitic tropes in there made all the more there by the fact that most of the Ferengi actors are of Jewish decent. It’s problematic. It’s meant to be a critic of capitalism and modern culture. Of US. I’ve heard various Trek folk basically state that of all the species in Star Trek, the Ferengi represent modern day humans. But. They fell back on some problematic crap and there’s no way of escaping that.
There was one point when I was a bit worried it was going to get a bit anti-atheist but it didn’t thank goodness. And that’s a whole other thing.
There’s a clip that’s pretty famous amongst DS9 fans, that you fan find here, that exemplifies some of what this panel was about. Not all of it, but some. It was running through my head for sure. After the session ended a group of us had a chat after. It brought up a lot of things to talk about, new ways of looking at things and agree or not that’s usually a good thing.
Tumblr media
...Moogie!
‘OH, BRILLIANT.’ ANTICIPATING THE THIRTEENTH DOCTOR
This one had @knittedace on the panel! She’d been talking about doing it last year and here we were . She in her hand knitted Dalek dress, me in the audience feeling a bit woozy and tired.
Mostly, it did exactly what the tin said. People being excited for Thirteen, recalling days when they’d written fic on the idea but never thought it possible, what people wanted to see or not see and the like. Mostly, it was a feel good panel with happy people glad for a new start that would bring in new and old fans alike.
Tumblr media
Someone on the panel pointed out that for some kids, they’ll have never known a time when The Doctor couldn’t be a woman. For whom their Doctor is a woman. And that is amazing. And she gets to keep her accent too, and there is hope we will see some of the North this season. Not just more London, or Cardiff as London.
For myself, I’ve always figured some Time Lords could change genders and sexes. Some couldn’t. And doing so was some kind of Time Lord intersex thing. But I was never really rooting for a woman Doctor.... yet when they announced it was going to happen? I was excited and relieved in a way I hadn’t imagined I would be.
Bring it on.
INTERVAL
At this point I found myself in the bar with some ginger ale talking to some people I’ve never med before. One was a demi person who had been at the Ace Rep talk and was very relieved to see demis included. I explained about the history of the flag and how they’re explicitly on it. Outside of some gatekeepers, the ace community I know has always embraced those other identities under the ace umbrella.
Me, them and a friend of theirs made our way downstairs after a good chin wag to get good seats for the next panel. We figured we’d probably need them and coincidentally we were all going to the same one.
FROM A/B/O TO DUBIOUS CONSENTACLES
I’m still not sure what dubious consentacles are to be honest. My mind goes to dubcon hentai but I’m probably wrong. This panel was after 10pm, the last of the day and very much adult only. I was in my TNG uniform and there was a Trek fan vid screening in the room across the hall so a volunteer checked I was where I wanted to be whilst we were waiting for it to start. Which was sweet, people do get lost down there.  Also, @unwoundbobbin was there which was a hoot.
The entire thing was a hoot to be honest. Not that formal, and mostly people sharing things they’d seen online, talk about the value of tagging, and wonder at the way fandom just comes together and decides on what dubious biology looks like. I shared the story of the early early days of Star Trek fandom how writers would come up with new weird and wonderful ways of depicting Spock’s genitals. I just think it’s something everyone should know. Fandom has been like this for a long time.
I wont go into detail of the things discussed. But it’s amazing how trends change over time, how even over multiple fandoms some of these tropes become so accepted nobody has to explain anything. We just know how it works and dive right into a kind of shared ‘verse thing.
There were some things mentioned that I hadn’t heard of and are very much not talking about on this post. But interesting.
Honestly, this was another of my favourite panels this convention. It was so much fun. So much. Some people were a bit tipsy I think.
I did warn the two mods that I was pretty tired so if my eyes looked funny or closed, I wasn’t asleep, I was just squinting. I got so enthused by the cracky fun of it all though that I needn't have worried. I also found it amusing just how many ace spectrum folk there were there.
After this I went back to my room. I got changed, went to bed hoping for a better night sleep than the one before. So very very tired. I’d had a great day but I was tired and I needed sleep urgently. Especially as the tired thing was not helping the dizzy thing. Thankfully I did get some sleep, not as good as home but I god some.

Ok, I'm gonna go ahead and talk about why I was in the hospital about a week and a half-ish ago. First off
suicide tw, illness tw, and I guess I'll throw in a heat stroke tw in case talk of severe dehydration and/or heat stroke is something people don't wanna read about. This is also kind of long so it's under a cut.
First of all, me and my husband separated on July 6th, four days before my birthday. He'd already gotten things set up so he grabbed his stuff and moved out the same day. He was kind enough to pay off the rent for July and August before he left, I guess since he knew I didn't have a job at the moment and wanted to make sure I wasn't immediately thrown out on the street.
I've been spiralling in depression for quite some time now anyway, mostly because of COVID and this hellishly long quarantine, so this did not help at all. I had already been tentatively planning a few methods of suicide and was barely eating or drinking anything, and this was the last straw, so to speak.
I won't give too many details so as not to trigger anyone, but I'd looked up VSED (voluntarily stopping eating and drinking) as a euthanasia method since I've attempted other methods in the past that have all failed. Dying by dehydration seemed a fairly easy if uncomfortable way to go, and I didn't really have much money for food anyway, so that's what I went with. Suffice to say it didn't really work. By July 12th I was feeling woozy but mostly still functioning ok, and was pretty distressed it wasn't going faster than I wanted it to. I decided that I would call a crisis line, and if they could give me even a few solid leads on getting out of my situation, I'd go to the local supermarket and buy some coconut water and fruit, then come home and persue them. If they didn't give me anything solid, I had other methods I could go with as "backup."
Luckily for me, they did have some numbers and links, and the lady specifically told me to drink a protein shake and call a local crisis number, since I'd reached a national one. I told them I would, then immediately set off to the supermarket to buy my fruits and water.
Clearly I was more out of my mind than I thought, trying to walk two blocks to the store in 30c weather while badly dehydrated, so I only made it about five minutes to a bus stop when I realized I'd have to take the bus there because I felt really bad. I took the bus there, then went into the mall next to the supermarket and bought a watermelon slushie, thinking this would be enough to get me through the grocery run and back home. I literally had to prop myself up on the counter because I felt so weak, and when I got it I had to walk around the mall and then lean against a trash can since because of COVID there is no indoor seating anymore, and all the seating outside was in direct sunlight.
After drinking it and resting a bit, I went to the supermarket and literally had to crouch down every so often because I still just felt so bad. I made it to the register and once more just kind of sagged against it for support, and an employee came up to me and asked me if I was ok. At that point I was like oh I think I've got heat stroke. To summarize, she ended up calling the pharmacist and I told him my situation, and he opened up the little case of ensure I'd been planning to buy and had me drink one. I looked at my fitbit and my heart rate was 140. They asked if I wanted them to call an ambulance and I initially said no, but also said I would not be able to make it home, so they called them.
Only other thing I wanna add is that as the paramedics were helping me onto a stretcher, the manager was like "hey she didn't pay for her stuff" and one of the parameters was like "restock it than" and than we all left. Even in my weird state I was like "ha, yeah, I mean what can I do right now about that??"
The hospital staff were very kind and that's how I got put on Zoloft and decided that since trying to lay down and die hadn't worked out several times now, I'm just gonna have to stand up and fight.
I hope everyone who reaches those dark depths has people to help them feel the same way.

Davina’s party is filled to the brim, and the Opera is filled with life—and death. Unbeknownst to the living, they are not the only party-goers in attendance. The ancestors have flocked to Nola’s Théâtre de l'Opéra, intending to give the birthday girl a gift of a lifetime. They’re ready to use any means necessary to take back what’s theirs, the birthday girl herself. In a mission to get Davina's powers, they've made an unlikely ally: Kate Argent, who has begun setting a circle of mountain ash, vervain, and lobelia to lock everyone supernatural inside. But the ancestors have done her one better: they've insured no humans will be able to get in to aid the little witch before they can get to her. But if no humans can get in, that means no humans can get out either.
Beneath the cut, you’ll find an extensive summary of the character-specific plot drops that will occur during our event.
Please note that while we have laid out this guide, it is up to the individual roleplayers to decide when and how to start these threads. In order to do so effectively, please makes sure to read or at least skim each other’s threads on the dash, so as to make sure your character jumps it at the right time (in the case of a three-way para, for example) and doesn’t interrupt the flow/chronological order that is roughly set out in the summary below. Also, please read ALL of the plot under the cut; not just the section that pertains to your character. This will become increasingly significant as the event goes on.
This is the second stage of three parts. Throughout the plots below, gases toxic to supernaturals of all species are slowly being released through the ventilation system of the opera house. Members are encouraged to work that into their replies, but to please keep in mind that the effects wouldn’t be noticeable for quite awhile, and wouldn’t be severe even once they are first noticeable.
Before moving onto the next section, a post will be published on the Main. Open/casual starters are permitted aside from the plot-threads listed below, though please manage your time accordingly so that the plot-threads are completed by the end of the event. Please tag your starters with VNCarreRavage and VNStarter! If you have any questions, ideas, or concerns, please do not hesitate to message the Main!
Most of all, remember to be inclusive to as many people as possible (without biting off more than you can chew), get creative, and enjoy!

Feeling woozy and a bit dizzy, Evelyn Jones would almost say she's drunk off champagne, if she had had any. What she doesn't know is that the spinning walls and dipping floors are actually the result of a connection the ancestors have forged with her unborn, psychic, child. It's not until Evelyn makes contact with Marin Bennett Morrell, that the ancestors can break past the veil and take control. Marin felt the first circle close–the wolfsbane– and though she wasn't strong enough to determine the nature of the magical disturbance, she's decided to investigate herself, positive that a certain sociopathic witch she once knew is behind it. After learning of Evelyn's connection to Jennifer, she decides to keep the woman close, not convinced that Evelyn is as innocent as she seems. However, Marin is exactly what the ancestors need—an emissary, the connecting point between covens and their source of magic, in this case, the ancestors themselves. But they have a bone to pick with Marin, and have no compunctions about hi-jacking Marin's control, and through her magic, Evelyn herself, to deliver their message to Davina Claire: They will get the sacrifices she has stolen from them. Unfortunately for Marin, Jennifer Blake has also sensed the magical disturbances as the circles begin to close. Unlike Marin, however, she knows exactly what is happening and can feel the supernatural energy in the opera house diminish with each circle. She makes a hasty retreat, happy to watch whatever carnage ensues from the safety of a little distance, despite how much she may enjoy a front and center seat to some arterial spray. But on her way out, she runs into Bonnie Bennett, who seems to be having some kind of episode. She has the illustrious privilege of being the ancestors’ next target. They’ve decided to take a little revenge on Marin and force the next Bennett in line to do her part for the coven of her heritage. Bonnie is visited by Emily Bennett, the main star character of Bonnie's recurring nightmares. Emily informs Bonnie that unless Davina is sacrificed, the French Quarter will face a disaster of catastrophic proportions, an implosion of magical energy that will make the natural disasters of the past year seem like mere child's play. Unaware of his sister's deeds, Chris Argent has started talking security with Matt Donovan, who is positive that the police haven't arranged security for the subterranean levels of the opera house because they were presumed to be an old legend, rather than fact. With the safety of the vulnerable guests in mind, Matt decides to go down and check for himself. It's lucky he did, because the Opera House has indeed been invaded, by vagrants Scott McCall and Stiles Stilinski, who find themselves lost in the labyrinthine levels below they had decided to explore after hearing about their haunted legend. But all is not well for the dynamic duo and their security entourage, because in the halls below is also Stefan Salvatore, feeling nostalgic for the Roaring Twenties with the glitz and glam of a jazz night on the town. It's a bittersweet feeling for him, recalling all of the brutal and brilliant terror of the Ripper and he wanted the chance to collect his thoughts in peace. Nostalgia strikes too close to home when Matt stumbles and cuts his palm, wafting the delicious scent of blood right under the nose of an addict. Will this addict stay in remission?
In the mean time, Chris spots a tell-tale powder in one of the Opera house's many powder rooms, and quickly puts two and two together to get Kate. He tries to contact his sister to no avail, and as a last ditch effort, finds Marcel Gerard to warn him, and then finds himself as the unenviable target of Marcel's wrath.
Marcel's flaky informant, Katherine Pierce, has been paying attention, and so when she bumps into a woman in a hurry to make an exit, the faint scent of wolfsbane on her clothing is tip enough. If wolfsbane is in the air, it's not long until the vervain follows, and Katherine wants none of it. It's not until she's in the clear when a rare crisis of consciousness strikes—or perhaps more aptly, she sees an opportunity to get Marcel into her debt. She decides this time—with a little inspiration from Jackson Kenner, who she has commandeered as her muscle—to play the hero, and find a way to get party-goers to safety.
Cami O'Connell has decided to cut her losses and split after seeing Marcel unleash his infamous temper on the hunter, and unwittingly, is the last person to make it across the circle before the ancestors manage to seal the unlucky party-goers inside. Meanwhile, Alaric Saltzman heads to Rousseau's to get in some quality time with his favorite bartender, only to find her much less amusing coworker in her stead. Adding insult to injury, he has the misfortune of touching the very glass Kate Argent drank her celebratory shot of whiskey from right before the party. The resulting vision is hellish indeed, and he get what information he can out of the bartender before heading toward the opera house, only to find he's too late to stop it.
Outside the opera house, Cora Hale is stewing after her argument with her brother, and decides to head down from the roof to the alley behind the opera house; such a beautiful view doesn't suit her mood anyway. In the alley, she runs into none other than Allison Argent. Allison has been trying to find a way into the opera house to meet Scott, but has so far been unsuccessful and is stumped as to why. Cora has a theory though, one that fits her theory about their mutual hallucinations in the hospital. Because while mountain ash can keep out a werewolf, she's not familiar with anything that can keep out a human. Anything except a witch.
While Cora frantically tries to find a way to save her brother, Derek Hale has finally succumbed to the pressure of her texts, and decides to leave before what good luck he's had so far runs out. His change of heart comes too little, too late, and when Derek finds the mountain ash circle trapping him inside, deja vú strikes just a little too close to home, and he begins to panic. Unfortunately for Derek, his panic falls on the unsympathetic ears of Damon Salvatore, who has been enjoying a pleasant evening of flirtation and dancing. Irritated at the untimely murder of his buzz, Damon goads Derek, lets his infamous barbed tongue run loose. But for all his intentions, it's Damon himself who ends up being the butt of his own joke. Derek, lost in a haze of panic, decides to bite before he barks. Hayley Marshall arrives too late to intervene, and, despite Derek's panic, finds herself wondering if a man who has such little control over their emotions—their wolf—even if it's a man she has feelings for, is really fit to be an alpha after all. Confused by the sudden realization, Hayley believes she must be hyperventilating, because she’s starting to have trouble breathing. She’s spotted by Malia Tate, who is facing the same trouble, only Malia has faced this before. Something about the burning in her lungs, the scent of the air triggers a flashback, and memories of the battle in the woods so long ago it was almost a different lifetime. Stuck somewhere between the horrors of the past and the dawning horror of the present, Malia urges her alpha to find safety, only to learn that there is no safety inside the opera house.
Derek's not the only one rapidly losing ground to panic. After Evelyn's eerie message, Davina Claire tries to find a loophole, but instead finds the ancestors’ net rapidly closing in on her. Davina tries to lock herself as far away from the party as she can, hoping to minimize the collateral damage when the ancestors inevitably find her. It also lets her have her meltdown in private. Or so she thinks. Vic Kloeckler-Kuyavar's fascination with historical buildings has prompted him to take a self-guided tour of the opera house. He overhears Davina's crying, and does his best to help her calm down. But with every circle that closes, Davina gets more and more upset, and unstable. The circle of lobelia might cut off her magic, but Davina is more powerful than even the ancestors are expecting, and this time, maybe losing control will work to her benefit. Maybe. Left alone on the rooftop, Kira Yukimura sits in the peace and quiet of the night-time cityscape, unaware of the turmoil below. Perhaps it's her attention to the tiny details, or perhaps its her heightened Kitsune senses she still is unaware of, but she sees a red light coming from the rooftop across the boulevard. A red-light that looks a lot like the laser sights on a sniper in the movies. She's not prepared for the first shot. Startled, and not a little freaked out, she dashes off the roof in double time
Jeremy Gilbert is on the patio of a bar nearby, waiting for Elena to answer his text. Ever since his close-call, he's been staying in close contact with her out of a rare sense of familial guilt to assuage her fears that he'll get in more trouble. When he hears the first shot of sniper fire, however, it's he that fears for Elena. On his sprint toward the opera house, he runs into Kira, and is chilled to learn what she saw.
John Alden couldn't care less about the opera, or the passive aggressive high society politics that happen there. What he does like is the BOGO sales on booze at the bars on the block of the opera every night there's a show. When the shot rings through the street, John is on his feet and out the door before the final echo has even sounded. He sees the boy from the bar, and hustles to him and his friend before he has to play guardian angel again. Unluckily for him, Jeremy is determined to play hero and sets off to find the shooter, with John and Kira following close behind.

Jeremy Loops announces ‘Critical As Water’ LP and Australian tour
youtube
Jeremy Loops has announced his new album, ‘Critical as Water’, scheduled for release on 16 March 2018. The follow up to his critically acclaimed debut - which won MTV Africa’s Alternative Album of the Year, and iTunes South Africa’s Album of the Year - is produced by Will Hicks (Ed Sheeran’s ‘Perfect’, Lilly Allen, Bastille), with additional production contributions by Jake Gosling (James Bay, The Libertines, Shawn Mendes).
Critical As Water is led by the single ‘Waves’, a woozy summer anthem that’s garnered over 1 million streams since its recent release. Waves quickly ascended Spotify’s Viral Chart internationally, and made key playlists like Spotify’s Weekly Buzz and Left of Centre playlists. Acclaimed filmmaker Casey Neistat described it as having an ‘incredible music video’, with its visuals filmed in Mozambique where Jeremy is seen surfing crystal clear blue waters alongside whales in a tropical paradise.
Tumblr media
The theme of water runs deep through the album. Where Waves is breezy and light, Underwater Blues speaks to the weightlessness of insomnia in a hyper-connected always-on world, rewarded only by the release of sleep - a sort of deep submergence. The Shore, closer to a crash on the rocks than a docking in the harbour, speaks to social tensions of the times we live in, where failure to act and resist will sink us all.
More urgent still is the real water crisis in Cape Town, South Africa, Jeremy’s home town. On course to be the first major city in the world to run out of water, taps to homes will be turned off on 22 April 2018, in an environmental crisis that sees the devastating effects of political mismanagement, unsustainable consumption, and rapidly changing climates coming to a heed. And so when these themes come up on songs like Flash Floods and a hauntingly beautiful ballad called Vultures, a more terrifying or apt backdrop to the album’s release cannot be conceived.
Speaking on the music’s themes, Jeremy explains how the restorative power of water fueled the album: “I grew frustrated trying to force the music because I knew the album was due, but one night after an incredible surf, I got home, picked up my guitar, and wrote Waves. Coincidence or not, I became deliberate about scheduling time in the ocean as a means to writing the album and the songs just kept coming’ explains Loops. He concludes, saying that ‘it isn’t all doom and gloom. If anything, this is the most beautiful piece of music I’ve ever made and it’s warm and lush, but the joyful highs are tempered by the real urgency of the problems the world is facing. Times are always changing. We all have the innate ability to flow like water to adapt to it. I like that about life, and I especially like how that comes across on this album. It feels wonderfully rounded.”

Jeremy Loops is a musician from Cape Town. He is also the co-founder of Greenpop, a tree-planting organisation that’s planted over 85,000 trees in Southern Africa since its inception. His debut album launched at No. 1 in his native South Africa, winning several awards along the way including MTV Africa’s Alternative Album of the Year’ and iTunes South Africa’s Album of the Year.
With his place as one of South Africa’s biggest artists firmly established, he leant on the power of his live show to break into Europe and North America, opening for Twenty One Pilots on the European leg of their Blurry Face Tour. Relentless touring garnered him a cult following in Europe like that in South Africa, and he soon headlined a sold out 30,000 ticket tour of his own across the United Kingdom and Europe. Trading Change has since had over 50 million track streams.
In Critical As Water, he looks to translate this cult following in Europe and Africa into a global movement.
You can see Jeremy Loops at the Corner Hotel on the 24th of May. Tickets are available here.
