!!!!!! No joke, these islands drive me wild. The sheer poignancy of them, these little scraps of Beleriand that still remain.

In the case of Tol Morwen, it seems like straightforward justice, that the grave/memorial of that family who suffered so much should be allowed to remain inviolate of all the ruin. But maybe there’s another way of looking at it. Túrin and Morwen were both buried at the stone, whereas Húrin cast himself into the sea and we can hope that the Teiglin eventually carried Niënor to the sea as well. So it’s almost like they’re all together, the stone and the sea, united as they never could be in life.

Himling, well, it’s almost like Maedhros himself, rising from the ruin of Beleriand just as Maedhros himself once seemed “as one that returns from the dead”. And perhaps there’s irony in the fact that Maedhros cast himself into the depths of the earth, whereas his old stronghold standing high above it.

I want so badly to know more about Tor Fuin. The name would seem to imply that as it stands, it retains the sinister atmosphere of Taur-nu-Fuin. What has it become in the millennia since Dorthonion was polluted? Is it a bastion of evil, out there off the Lindon coast, shadowy and perilous, a breeding ground for horrors? Do the sailors of Lindon and Númenor take all care to avoid it? Taur-nu-Fuin was once Sauron’s bolthole - did he ever return? Did the Great Wave cast him up on its shores at the same time Elendil fetched up in Lindon?

Or is there another possibility - that the name may remain, but that being encompassed by the waters of Ulmo allowed the land of Dorthonion to be purified? Is there any ruin or remnant left of the homes of Beren and Barahir? Does Tarn Aeluin still exist, remoter now than it ever was? Do its waters still mirror the stars, as they did on the night that Aegnor and Andreth parted?

so I was making some lotr gifs and I noticed some additional islands I'd never noticed before?!

a few months ago I had the thunk moment of realisation that the island of Himling was just... the hill of Himring. and now, we have Tol Fuin (Dorthonion/Taur-nu-Fuin) and Tol Morwen (the Stone of the Hapless commemorating Morwen, Turin and Nienor).

it's just so interesting to me that, of all of Beleriand, these are what remain. there were so many other hills and mountains that must have been destroyed and laid low enough to be submerged in the water, but these three points of Beleriand lie above the waves.

what is it about these three that Tolkien thought was worth saving? preserving? these three small scraps of history, stubbornly resisting erasure from the map? one is a fair land turned evil, one the remains of a fortress against said evil, and one the resting place of those who suffered under the evil, and who will rise one day to defeat it?

one time in melliwyk's campaign we were staying in a luxury inn in a dwarven stronghold partially populated by warforged and built inside a volcano and each room had its own private bath with running water on tap and when I/ melliwyk was like 'hot water? 👀' the DM gave me a scathingly incredulous 'no??' like that was the world's dumbest question

I really want to know where that scene fit in. Even more why it was removed. It made the Kim scenes make so much more sense. And at the same time made Chris leaving make less sense. Why did we not get that? Was it to make room for the useless Gerrard scenes? Or Ortiz and that stupidity? I genuinely want to know why such an important and heartfelt scene was dropped. If the goal was to get Eddie and Chris separated to grow separately, have him visit his grandparents, but don't drive a ridiculous wedge between them to do it.

What are your opinions on the goddess Dione? I hear some people say that since her name means "she-Zeus" or that she's described as Zeus' female equivalent, her powers must be on par with him. Is that true? I have been trying to do some of my own research, but since she's such an obscure goddess, I couldn't find much.

Well, I haven't really thought about her before, but that the mythic Dione that we do have would be equal to Zeus because her name (presumably) is a female variant of Zeus' is kind of silly.

The mythic Dione is either an Okeanid or a (thirteenth) Titan (Hesiod for the former, the Bibliotheke, at least, for the latter), but parentage wouldn't necessarily say anything about divine power.

And, like.

Would it be interesting if the mythic Dione, the Dione worshipped next to Zeus in Dodona, might be the later survival of Mycenaean Diwia, the (presumably) female half of Diwe (Zeus)? Sure. I think it absolutely would be, simply because the survival in itself, even if reshaped so dramatically, would be interesting! We have only a rather limited number of Mycenaean deities we know did survive from Mycenaean times into Archaic and Classical Greece and beyond. But - that wouldn't say or mean anything in regards to our actual existent Dione's supposed powers.

Would I survive the pit at a Sleep Token concert? I’m 5’4” and quite petite and also autistic/ADHD. But in the right environment I can get fucking crazy! The more I listen to their music the more I want to be a part of the chaos. I have been to one standing concert (my first and I was 15 and nearly passed out, but I’m a lot more robust than I was then) and my local music festival multiple times where I was always the one to drag my Dad with me to the barricade. Anyone who’s been in the pit at a Sleep Token concert (or more generally) do you think I could handel it?
