It is far too late at night for me to be digging through my old traditional art. So.

The first arts I ever made of Chara, and Frisk. And also a solitary Chisk too. Back in middle school when I would draw on my phone. I am glad I got these old pieces off of my DeviantArt before I deleted it a couple years ago. Otherwise they would have been. Well. Gone.

See here a Frara and a Frisk and a Flowey and a Chara and a Chisk. I am pretty sure that is the only time I have ever drawn Flowey. And it is the only time I will EVER draw Flowey.

Another Frisk and Chara. As you can see. Frisk has grey eyes. And Chara has blue and red eyes. Because I was an edgy middle schooler. And Chara has always been my favorite character. So the highest honor I could ever have bestowed upon them was that classic duality motif.

A little. Reference for the two that I made for myself. Ah. So sad that Chara doesn't have the ahoge I gave them in the previous drawings.

And finally. Bonus Chisk.

So. Let's compare my old middle schooler self's designs for them vs my current self's designs. And. Also. As a treat. My first design of Kris from 2019 vs my current design as well.

Ok. First thing's first.

Frisk.

So. Like. The way I design Frisk nowadays is in fact 100% based off the way I used to draw them off. Yes, there are some obvious differences. But the suspenders and the short sleeved shirt were, well, you know the saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". That is always true. Though I will say that the little hearts instead of gold buttons, is also taken from the old design, because I distinctly remember thinking to myself that Frisk should have a heart in the back of the suspenders where they cross over eachother. And also. On the topic of the hair.

The way I do Hero's hair is 100% actually based on old Frisk's hair.

Because well. Hero is the beta protagonist design for Undertale. And my old Frisk is basically the beta design for my current Frisk. You get it.

Next.

Frara.

Yeah that old design was extremely basic. I don't think I ever used to think about the Unused Human Sprite back then. But. Well. I sure do now. A big glow-up for Frara. And a height reduction. Their current design is very much inspired by the place in Undertale where they can be seen-

Waterfall!

I think to myself. Well. What would a character confined to a constantly raining place need? A raincoat and rainboots!

I can't like. NOT give them stuff like that. Just wouldn't be true to me.

Chisk.

The fandom may have forgotten about Chisk in the years. But I will never forget about Chisk. A fanmade fusion of Chara and Frisk. I will never not think about them. They're in my brain like a song I love. Shawty like a melody in my head. CHISK OH CHISK MY LITTLE SCRUNKLE.

Anyway. Not much design notes for Chisk, past or present. Except for that the old design is a blatant ripoff of a design that I have unfortunately very much no source for.

If anyone knows who the original artist is, please tell me so I can thank them for making such a wonderful image.

Now. Before we get to Chara.

Well. They got edgier. And their shawl thing got more accurate to their Dark World self. That's all I really have to say aside from FFUCK I AM SUCH A GENIUS FOR MAKING THEIR SHOES THE SAME COLOR AS THE SHADE OVER THEIR EYES. GODDAMN. BIG WIN FOR ME ON THAT ONE. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. HELL YEAH KRIS. YOU'RE A FFUCKING WEIRDO AND A COOL KID.

And finally. Chara!

My original design for them is. Hm. Well. I'll be honest whenever I see a Chara Undertale without the collared shirt and sweater combo going on I get annoyed, even if the one giving them a turtleneck is my own paste self.

Also. The green-grey shorts and boots were based on clothes I actually had at the time. So. Like. I have always been a big projector onto Chara. Shit man. Even and especially nowadays I project onto them. The hair, the collared shirt and sweater combo. It is, unabashedly, very self indulgent. Those are very deliberate choices. The ffucking Roxy LaLonde hair flicks and that combo of sweater and collared shirt is LITERALLY all over characters I draw. My own damn persona, my character Blue, even Blitz with his wild hair I will still default to doing like that in sketches.

Do you know how hard it is for me to not give characters that type of hair. And that collared shirt and sweater type combo. It is. The hardest decision to not do it.

(These are well-founded things, so I’ll both try to explain myself, but also see if we have a good idea how long baked goods even last. If they WOULD last long enough to stay fresh for the next day, it could be tonight, we’ll go with that. If not, then it’d have to be the next day.)

(In the game, Sayori did bake eggs and toast for her breakfast. Perhaps Japanese schools are different? Or it’s a quirk of the game? Let’s also account for the fact this would be based off of how it was like in 2017.)

(By the way, I was referring specifically to the baked goods meant for the club itself, not the stands. Those we already established would indeed be in the afternoon, though likely that afternoon and not this one, if the club’s ones were first. We are not making stands in the morning! There really is not enough time for THAT! Just ”making” a batch of cookies that can be split across the club members. I don’t know THAT much on baking, but I do know a whole batch can be done at once, so you don’t have to bake separate times for every club member. And again, depending on how long baked cookies can stay fresh for, it might get to happen this afternoon after all. If only we had an actual baker among the two of us…)

(Not using that image for Monika’s bedroom does make sense too. In fact, while it was made in the DDLC reddit, it wasn’t posted by Dan Salvato, it’s made by one of the users on that subreddit for a mod they were making at the time. So actually… it’s NOT real! Reusing assets from other areas of the game does work fine anyway now that I think of it, though. This is supposed to be a video game, and Monika’s room has no art in the game. So any other houses just using the same generic background elements we could consider an actual part of the game’s logic. The game doesn’t even draw cookie sprites, after all. So if it doesn’t match something Monika has, it’s just the background not matching what’s in there, call it one of the game’s limitations. There doesn’t need to be much effort there, the player isn’t supposed to get a good look. Monika doesn’t have a route in the game after all.)

(One last thing. Flowey has some good ideas, and this definitely fits him in-character. Though I’ll likely have Monika explain that she really meant not to just go around the windows or go somewhere where it’s clear she’s staying at Monika’s. Thankfully, houses have things called walls. Also thankfully, Monika can send them both directly to Monika’s house. So long as Flowey doesn’t go around drawing attention to the fact he’s there like go around waving out the windows, it’ll be fine. But hey, who knows, maybe some of those makes it more likely nothing goes wrong and works as a backup, as Monika could likely convince people this other person that definitely isn’t Buttercup is definitely someone she’s known for a while! That shouldn’t need to happen, but… better to have a backup plan. But of course if he didn’t know about the conflict the game entities might have if they get conflicting ideas on who was in that house after Ivan comes back, since if Ivan was supposedly there the whole time, Flowey couldn’t have also been staying in the same house that Ivan was literally living at. Hence the idea that nobody should make that conclusion. Of course I’ll tip the scales in their favor too, but I’m not telling them. ;) Soon I’ll work on my in-character response. It’s clear we aren’t getting any askers in this last chance before they enter the actual gameplay world right now, so I might as well just have things progress. Plus, we did work out asks can still come in as long as neither Natsuki, Yuri, or any of those in-game entities that aren’t exactly characters are there to see it. You guys still have some time. And guys, don’t try to tell Monika about Flowey’s poem before it’s actual sharing time if you see it and she doesn’t. Or I’ll have to start blocking things from her like Nat does with Flowey.)

(…Okay, so I’m sure you aware I save these posts somewhere so I don’t lose it while I’m making them, right? This sometimes means I can look into things while I’m making this. So I tried looking into this, and yep, they could definitely last, they actually stay well for a couple days. Not sure exactly what the quality curve is, but yep, they can last. So yep, we can have them “bake“ this day and not the next morning. It shouldn’t be that noticeable in quality compared to the next morning, since they’d get served at clubtime, which is after school. (they would have cooled down by then anyway, so it’s just based on whether it’d be stale. And nope!))

(I remembered because Flowey isn't actually attending any classes- (Or maybe he can? But everything would likely go over his head, and he isn't registered as an actual school visitor.) -so he would be able to bake them while everyone else is at school if he isn't going until the club meeting starts. But if he is, then the baking woud done today.)

(If anyone realizes Flowey was living in the same house as Ivan, we could say Ivan was away visiting family or something for a bit. The house was rented out and Flowey's family took it for the little while he is staying.

(Also it's so sad that Monika doesn't get a route! :( I did not know that, but then again, in-game Monika isn't very nice. Or she is nice, but it's not very real. I'm glad your Monika is good!

Aaaaa the undertale artbook is SO GOOD! Even when its not having particularly big changes or anything, its nice just to see the progress pics of the background drawings, with the really cute commentary by toby and friends! They just have such a nice jokey rapport with each other and its great to see how much collaboration went into certain things. Apparantly the only tileset that toby sprited all by himself was the true lab, everything else had bits and pieces made by different members of the team. Its amazing how cohesive it all looks in the end, I never would have guessed!

Various fun bits I liked:

* All the Mew Mew Kissy Cutie-related merchandising is designed by GigiDigi, in the initial beta copy toby sent to her it was all just placeholders yelling ‘GIGI I NEED HELP WITH THIS’ in sketchy writing XD She also designed the mettaton posters and mettaton’s bedroom, basically she saved toby whenever he needed fabulous anime things! * Apparantly at one point they jokingly considered adding a ‘team rocket base puzzle’, and anticipate how relieved the audience must be that they didn’t do it * “The water should be cyan on black because black on cyan would look like SHI-shaving cream” * Apparantly Flowey was legit inspired by a creepypasta toby read. * Toriel was originally a simple ‘goddess figure’ in the plot, with a more humanoid appearance and a mandatory plotline death to establish seriousness. Toby says that as soon as he started not wanting her to die here, he grasped the full idea of what he wanted Undertale to be, conceptually. Also the various beta designs are very cute! Toriel has a lot of them since she changed so much, whereas characters like the protagonist just got a few colour changes. * Truly the greatest loss: the ‘cool bus’ sprite. * Apparantly the beta papyrus date time sprites were ‘too good’ so they had to redraw more goofy ones to keep the comedy. Same goes for his ‘battle body’, he originally had proper armour that looked similar to undyne and was TOO BADASS TO BE ALLOWED * There’s a where’s wally page of annoying dogs XD * Confirmed canon that sans’s mouth never opens, and he somehow smashes food against it and it dissappears. Also his seat at grillby’s has a towel on it cos when he drinks the ketchup it falls out of his stomach. * the Temmie monster design came from a group chat between toby and the rest of the game’s team, where one of them had never seen a selfie of temmie and doodled a silly monster as his idea of what she looked like. She loved it so much she had to put it in the game!
