"we worship God from a place, not for a place" this quote (I heard in a devotional this morning) goes hard because I don't worship God in the hopes I can earn a place in heaven, I worship him because he promised me a seat in heaven.
Romans 3:20 NLT
[20] For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are.
Romans 3:23-25 NLT
[23] For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. [24] Yet God, in his grace, freely (Isaiah 55:1)makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. [25] For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past,
Over and over God tells us the same thing:
"do not be afraid," and "have faith."
Too often in this beautiful weird little app I see too many people getting caught up in the wrong and irrelevant details (Luke 10:38-42, Matthew 11:15).
Luke 10:25-37 NLT
[25] One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?” [26] Jesus replied, “What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?” [27] The man answered, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself(Proverbs 19:8).’” [28] “Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!” [29] The man wanted to justify his actions (Genesis 4:9), so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” [30] Jesus replied with a story: “A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road. [31] “By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. [32] A Temple assistant walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side. [33] “Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. [34] Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. [35] The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.’ [36] “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked. [37] The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.” Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.”
This. This right here is why Jesus hated the Pharisees so much. Because they couldn't understand this, this important but basic commandment. Compassion (Luke 11:46).
Let me put it this way, a person shouldn't be telling you what you should be doing, but instead Jesus should be speaking to you through that person (Matthew 12:33), this is why Proverbs encourages advice and council but in the same breathe God warns you to be careful of who you take that advice from because people are human and only those who have Christ in them are to be trusted.

"The Genius of Advertising Could No Further Go"
National Police Gazette (Vol. 36, Iss. 147).
Magazine illustration, 17 July 1880.
Archive Link.
Fair warning: yapping ahead. Things I explore: the National Police Gazette, the illustration, and a teeny history of 19th-century women brothel owners... and also an apology because I didn't mean to write all of this.
THE NATIONAL POLICE GAZETTE
"THE Genius of Advertising Could No Further Go—An Enterprising Proprietress of a Bagnio Places a Photo-Lithograph in Her Window Setting Forth The Charms of the Inmates; New York City" (full caption) is from the National Police Gazette, a magazine founded in 1845 by Enoch E. Camp and George Wilkes that covered murders, outlaws, and sports—as any man-interested tabloid would (I'm not a man, but yippee-ki-yay, would I tune in). And, of course, the gazette would include scandalous (on the cusp of obscene and illegal (Victorian era, keep that in mind)) images of female sex workers and performers (think of it as the time's Playboy... silly enough, they also had Marilyn Monroe for their cover, this being 1956 instead of PB's 1953).
TRAGICALLY, the National Police Gazette would see its largest spike in popularity during the Great Depression before suspending publication from 1933-1935 due to selling ownership twice, being sold again in the late sixties, and then killing the magazine's production in 1977. A whole 132-year reign, including being the prime news for Boxing in the 20s (the editor and proprietor, Richard Fox, handed studded belts to champion fighters) and being barred by USPS, declares this magazine not only a historical relic but also a forgotten yet still-living America—one for the men (and, of course, us girls. After all, this was peak American).
ILLUSTRATION
BACK to the picture. The caption mentions the word 'bagnio,' which, upon scanning, accidentally read the N as an X, so I searched up the word to make sure I was reading it entirely correctly—I was. It's an archaic term for 'brothel' (a place where patrons visit prostitutes). The illustration depicts men staring at images of prostitutes that are pinned on the window by the owner (can't blame men for using women to make money as, in this situation, it's a female owner).
WOMEN & BROTHELS
SURPRISINGLY enough, women dominated Western America, building communities and providing for the economy. The fact I call it surprising is because I just learned this (Feminism should fight against history erasure because this should've been a widely talked about chapter in HS American History)! As much as I believe women shouldn't sell their bodies and that we need to better take care of women (forced prostitution—sex slavery—runs the prostitution industry), I can't deny the history women have with Bordellos, not as employees but also as owners. Madams are the title of these female brothel owners, and they were common back in the 19th century. Most of the time, Madams were entry-level (showgirls) who made almost as much as factory workers and worked their way up to the top or used their money to create inns and parlors, expanding their wealth. These women, though taking advantage of their own and other girls' (usually aged from their mid-teens to middle-aged) bodies, capitalized and found their place in labored society... something that can be considered early feminism. They planted themselves in the economy and made it known that they could own property, make money, and (yes, even in 1800s United States) vote. That, you can applaud.
APOLOGY
I didn't actually expect to yap on this post; I was writing my book, scrolling for images, and found this one, and wanted to include the full caption... which ended down a rabbit hole😭

Today's Daily Encounter Wednesday, December 11, 2024
Patient Endurance
So do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great reward it brings you! Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.1
I don’t know about you, but I am not great at being still and waiting. I like to be an “active participant” who tries to make things happen faster! I am a fixer and a go-getter. So, when things happen in my life where there is literally nothing I can do to speed up the process or fix the situation, I know it is God’s way of gently reminding me that He has it all under control. He is working in ways I cannot see, and I need to trust and have patient endurance in the process. I read the following about patience a while ago, and it has really been a great reminder during times when I get impatient.
Patience is:
the ability to sit back and wait for an expected outcome without experiencing anxiety, tension, or frustration.
the ability let go of your need for immediate gratification and be willing to wait.
the trait that displays tolerance, compassion, understanding, and acceptance toward those who are slower than you in developing maturity, emotional freedom, and coping abilities.
the ability to remain calm in the midst of turmoil because you know God is in control.
When unexpected situations arise in your life, be intentional and take a moment to think of what God wants to grow in you through it. For me, patient endurance is often what is needing to grow through difficult circumstances. My job is to be faithful with what God has given me to do and let him handle the rest.
Suggested prayer: Dear God, thank you for the situations that you allow in my life to help me grow to be more like you. I don’t have to worry because you are always in control. Even when it is difficult or I don’t understand the outcome, I trust you are always good, and you care for me. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Hebrews 10:35-36 (NLT).

played DND for the first time today!!!!!!
it was a lot of fun omg, thinking i might make updates on this blog but our cast is
dragonborne named laiona bane i think, whose a 16 y/o divine sorcerer pyromancer/healer living on their own after their whole criminal gang got arrested and they were let off being considered a hostage because SURELY there would be no way someone favoured by the gods could do anything evil!!! so now theyre running a brothel that fronts as a bar/inn and is constantly causing arson and chaos wherever she goes. her bodyguard hates her
her bodyguard (meeeee!!!! :D) Margarette who is a 195cm (6 foot 4) 36 y/o woman paladin who was raised by a fairy to take the place of his dead son??? brother???? family members in a VERY isolated forest made up entirely of faeries save for the one (1) temporary human settlement her father helped run before it fell apart. anyways her father WAS very loving but she'd has been having a crisis since discovering she's a woman AFTER her father passed away and said human settlement collapsed and just trying to figure out "What being her own person and not an extension of a dead one means/what is this whole woman thing about/what does this do/what are THESE/what the fuck, dad" and lived as the ONE human with a bunch of jackass faerie neighbours before going on a quest of ✨self-exploration✨ (in which she "chose" the name margarette for herself, since it sounds "woman" enough??? which is what she is, she supposes, since she's OBVIOUSLY not her father's dead relative is what she's learned!!!) she enters the first bar she sees after a while and is immediately suspicious of it THEN after confronting the owner (laiona) about it she's like "...do you need somewhere to work?" and now is living as a personal bodyguard for her. she Very Notably sounds like a grown man and is a dick to Everyone
A poor centaur farmer girl named Valerie living a normal life on the farm with her father and goes to their town to sell vegetables and goes to get a quick bite to eat/place to stay the night at laiona's """inn"""" and 1. ends up having to sleep outside because they don't have any rooms that fit her 2. ends up getting harassed by a 40 y/o wizard drunk off his ass from 1 beer who eats an entire hamburger staring her dead in the eye the entire time. she gives him a carrot in pity because he looks about to keel over (he looks 80). margarette calls her "horse" and she's very sad about it :(
said 40 y/o wizard named Mangor who lives in some EXTREMELY magical old forest with probable great importance off in the corner of the map??? he befriends animals and puts them in his little book and then releases them when he needs to like pokemon. he has a lava snail he uses for travel that he keeps under his hat called Schnecke and it was his first friend. he came the whole 1400+ miles for a burger because they dont have them in the Forest of Elders only to get drunk off of one beer, eat a carrot and stumble out onto the street. margarette didn't like him she wanted him out IMMEDIATELY but liona was very fond of him which is where things start up :)
SO the plot is
After Valerie turns in for the night Maggie sees Mangor stumbling drunk through the streets, and being AWFULLY suspicious he might be a secret informant of the knights templar she grabs him and drags him by the foot back to give him a room for the night and prevent him from leaving till she gets a read on just WHAT is going on, BUT liona catches them and is like "omg its that guy from earlier. hes kinda silly isnt he lol" and knowing exactly where she was going maggie was like "No the fuck you do NOT" anyways she makes her get him a new pair of pants and another burger (She is not pleased about this being JUST paid to be a bodyguard and now additionally having to act as a personal maid for this drunk perverted wizard, but liona was like "DO IT or ur working with the hoes tonight" rip margarette.... 😭) AND she made them bunk with each other. maggie made him sleep on the floor lmao he has night terrors So MEANWHILE liona's like "You know what Margarette. we should get out more. lets do a few quests, have a few adventures etc i wanna try this guy out he looks like he could use it" which maggie ALSO is not a fan of bc she always has to get her out of trouble when they do and they were also interrogated by an officer of the knights templar EARLIER (Which Liona got out of by citing several protection clauses and laws and constitutional amendments that did not exist) so they should Absolutely Not Ever leave the bar alone at that point in time
but liona absolutely does NOT listen and instead gathers them all to find a steed, which she picks as the poor farmer girl who was staying overnight to they go out to her stable like "Hey. how much do you charge if we were asking you to travel ~ miles" and maggie's like "you COULD ask me and i could get it for free for us if i wanted (by threatening her). lol. lmao even" but it chalks up to 30 gold. anyways they go to sleep and all wake up in some fuckoff cave, maggie wakes up first, IMMEDIATELY blames the wizard but seeing he has no idea whats going on she checks on Valerie, and finally (even if she REALLY didn't want to) gives up to report to her boss. they all check outside the cave, which is on a cliff and liona tries scaling, only to fail but not DIE fortunately So they continue deeper into the cave, only to find a sort of??? curved hallway? thing, though its thin to where they have to walk in a line. the walls are made of mist, and after maggie tries to put her hand through one she finds you can go right through it. liona ties herself to some rope to see where the mist leaves with maggie holding the other end to keep track of her and so she can pull her back if needed, except its found that it actually LOOPS and liona comes right back out from the OTHER wall. both she and mangor go crazy with this and are just running loops while Valerie and Margarette are standing there like "i hate my life" Eventually the rope DOES somehow get used up and liona can't run any further so Maggie makes her run back 😭 BUT she suddenly hears her father calling for her, causing her to turn around and then suddenly everyone is gone, mangor gets lost from the group and liona also turns around when she notices margarette's no longer holding the rope, which ALSO separates her from the rest of the group. the only one whose left standing is valerie, who eventually comes across Margarette and calls out for her but is ignored as Margarette continues to search for the voice of her father. Valerie eventually is forced to turn around when Liona finds HER though and decides to smack her on the ass, forcing her to turn around before LIONA is "confronted" by the officer of the knight templar from before who says they've completely destroyed the tavern. meanwhile Mangor eventually gets a little anxious and eventually takes off his hat to hold his snail (It made a very nice popping noise as it was pulled off his bald head) and holds it in his arms for a while BEFORE HIS FUCKING SNAIL LOOKS BACK AND VANISHES INTO THIN AIR which causes mangor to have a complete balls to the wall agonised meltdown 😭 meanwhile valerie turns around AGAIN hearing the voice of her father calling for her to come back to the farm and margarette does as well trying to go back to look for liona and the rest, and now things are starting to look a bit,,,, wrong???? the mist is more bloody and the ground turned from porcelain tiles to kinda,,, bad sludge and eventually it gets to where its just flesh and hardened blood for walls, not great!!! AND THEN!!! liona has turned around SO many times she eventually hears something sneaking up behind her and TRIES to fight it off, turns around AGAIN and is safe for like 3 seconds before she realises she's in some place so dark she can't even cast a spell to light it up. she eventually gets grabbed and pulled into this strange monster that just crushes her from the sides until all her bones are broken and she dies the SECOND to go is valerie, who ironically only looked back twice and was DETERMINED to keep going since she was the first to figure out the whole "Turning back = not good" gimmick. She hears something approaching from behind and STARTS attempting an attack but it grabs onto her before she can, latches onto her legs from behind and flattens her to death with its fists :( rip valerie....
anyways while those two were being met with gruesome deaths, Margarette starts hearing something sneaking up behind her after trying to call out for her father and stays STILL, debating whether or not to try calling out for the OTHERS or stay quiet and try to time an attack against this thing without looking back by stabbing it from behind her waist with her polearm, and Mangor who ALSO started to hear footsteps did the exact opposite by repeatedly looking behind him to try and get away from whatever was approaching him 😭 ends up backfiring though till he eventually casts a poison spell and IMMEDIATELY fills the entire vicinity with poison which he promptly breathes in and dies from khfgkdfhsghkdjf not before seeing the "monster" that was stalking him which was a charred version of himself with a gaping maw for a mouth tho
The last one to go is Maggie who I'm ngl I was surprised to see her last this long BUT she SEVERELY messes up her timing trying to stab behind her only to have her polearm grabbed and yanked BACK instead, and eventually got pulled back by what felt like a bunch of little hands yanking at her clothes. she tries for her javelins before it grabs her bag and ALMOST considers just stripping and letting go of all her weaponry, items, etc. to at least get out alive but at that point it ends up touching her skin directly and literally burning it off before she gets completely devoured by "whatever" this is 😔 as it turns out she was the only one NOT to die/have a direct encounter with an otherworldly silent hill-ass creature, but Mangor's pet snail 😭😭😭
anyways, they all wake up on a road thoroughly traumatised and confused and that's where we left off for the first round!!!! it was a lot of fun!!!!!!!! Here's Maggie btw!!! she's an actual OC for a different story of mine :)
#gu6chan's musings#gu6chan's muses#i've never played dnd before for reference but it's so much fun omg#gu6chan plays DnD#since i feel i'll be yapping about it a lot more on here ;0

July 2023 Reading Wrap-Up
Total books read: 6
Total pages read: 2,048
Days read: 24/31
Average star rating: 4.46/5
Challenge Prompts Filled: 8 in July; 74 total. Popsugar: 1(24)/40. Romanceopoly: 4 (22)/36. CRAD: 1(7)/12. BTBL: 2(21)/52
Mini-reviews under the cut!
Christmas Angels by Nancy Naigle ⭐⭐⭐(½) What a way to kick off Christmas in July reading! I wanted something that would read with Hallmark movie vibes, and this was PERFECT. Big city exec moves to a small town and takes over the family inn? Where she hires a handsome construction man to help get it ready for open? Sign me UP. It was funny, it was light hearted, merry and bright, and gave me warm fuzzy emotions in just the right places. I loved the motif with the angels coming up with a sort of spiritual reverence, but still finding a logical, yet meaningful closure at the end. Very cute, very sweet, made me want to give up my corporate hospitality job and go buy a tiny mountain lodge of my own.
Prompts filled: BTBL – Cozy read or cover; Romanceopoly – Winter/cover is blue, black or silver; or winter holiday book
The Christmas Wedding Guest by Susan Mallery ⭐⭐⭐⭐(½) I meant to get to this one back at the holidays, and I’m SO glad I finally made the time now. As usual, Susan Mallery hits it out of the park, this time with an added boost of holiday spirit! It’s a double romance – rockstar/small town girl and teacher/parent, two EXCELLENT tropes. I think it’s supposed to kick off her new series, and I can’t wait to see what else comes of the worldbuilding. There are a few characters I’m already eyeing for hopeful plots in the next stories. And yes, again, there’s a hotel at the holidays involved. What can I say? I have a type.
Prompts filled: BTBL – All the romance; Romanceopoly – Autumn/red or green cover; or has trees and leaves on the cover; or has a cozy vibe
Home for Christmas by Camille Isley ⭐⭐⭐ ⭐ ⭐ No hotel this time, but still lots of holiday travel! This was laugh out loud funny, sweet, romantic, grumpy, sunshine-y and everything in between. I blew through it in like three days and have already downloaded two other books by the same author. We love a writer romance, and a not-quite-only-one-bed, but definitely not enough beds forced proximity setup. This one was different than I usually read too, because not ONLY was there a romance budding, but family dynamics fitting together right out of the gate. It’s a predictable plot, but as we know, sometimes that’s exactly what I want. Give me a prank war with a guaranteed happy ending and lots of Christmas merriment, and I am a happy camper.
Prompts filled: Popsugar – A book that was self-published
A Very Merry Bromance by Lissa Kay Adams ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Listen. I knew I would like this one. Anyone who’s listened to me talk about my taste in books probably knew I would like this one. And I LOVED it. Bromance Book Club is possibly the best series I’ve read in a long time, and this one is right in line with the rest of them. It’s funny, it’s sweet, it’s … I mean, the romance goes without saying, but it’s romantic. And this one is Christmassy too, which just makes things better. It’s so fun reading not only the Bromance stories, but the little snippets of the stories the guy are reading throughout the book, but as usual my one regret is that those books don’t exist in full. I’d read the CRAP out of them. As it is, I’ve been thinking about Colton and Gretchen even DAYS after I finished the book. 15/10 recommended to anyone who’s looking for something bright and fun and festive, with just enough emotion to bring tears to your eyes, and always, ALWAYS a big gesture before the happy ending.
Prompts filled: None, I just really wanted to read it!
Christmas at the Island Hotel by Jenny Colgan ⭐⭐⭐ (¾) A last minute pick, designed to fit the CRAD prompt for the month. I own many Christmas books, but as it turns out, all of them are set here in the US. Ended up with this one as an eBook from the library, following some very specific search parameters. It was … alright, and I enjoyed almost every minute of reading it, but it’s not something I think I’d choose to read again. Generally I’m more romance, less women’s fiction, but this book was definitely more women’s fiction than romance. And sure, it’s good to read outside my comfort zone – and this was a good story, without a doubt – but I found myself frustrated a couple of times when it felt like the author was dancing around the romantic elements. The relationships are there, a couple of them are hinted at, but I would have liked to see them fleshed out a little further. That said, Isla and Konstantin are definitely one of the cutest relationship arcs I’ve read in a hot minute. I just wish the other pairings had gotten a little bit of that depth too.
Prompts filled: Romanceopoly – Post Office/set in a different country to where you live; CRAD July – set in a different country or world [to June]
The Christmas Wager by Holly Cassidy ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Alright, full disclosure: I technically finished this at like 1 a.m. on 1 August. But I hadn’t gone to bed yet, and the day isn’t over until I go to sleep, and I would have been done earlier if half a dozen things had gone differently over the weekend. And it was good enough for me to stay up past midnight, running on like three hours of sleep. Of all the books I read this month, it’s definitely top two (and that’s up with some tough competition). I loved the fun, silly competitions, and the heartwarming family dynamics. This book would make an EXCELLENT movie; I could picture so many of the scenes playing out clearly inside my head. It read just like a romance novel should, from start to end, and I’m already eager to find more of the author’s work to read in the future!
Prompts filled: Romanceopoly – Library/free choice

Today's translation #36
Sayo Yamamoto's interview in Go Yuri go!!! offical fanbook
Part 4.
Q: It's a bit surprising that even Otabek uses social media.
A lot of foreign skaters have accounts. We can say that it's normal to promote yourself by posting about what you are doing. Otabek too uses all sorts of social media. He practices at rinks not in his home country but abroad - I think, for skaters who have to travel all over the world, social media are also a method to stay in contact with their friends, families and fans.
Q: The fireworks scene in the ED was very memorable.
This was Hayashi-san's idea. It's not that all three of them were together in Hasetsu in the summer. So, it's not that it's a scene that actually happened somewhere sometime in the past - it's an imaginary world. Hayashi-san is very observant and the visuals he creates are very convincing - he makes you think that the moments he portrays really happened.
Q: What was the most important thing to you when you were working on the visual side of Yuri!!!
First of all with screen layouts, at first I wanted them to look similar to Kubo-san's original style of drawing, so I was thinking about making the black color of characters' outlines really stand out. In addition, also in backgrounds, I wanted to leave the lines well-defined, and not make them too realistic and photo-like. With the exception of the town of Hasetsu, all [location] settings are essentially based in real world. In anime about figure skating, and one where we wanted to animate the GPF series, we wanted to have a link to real world locations where GP series events actually take place. Yuri!!! started airing in October, so the timing matched with real-life GP series, and by making the locations the same, we also wanted to make people, who don't watch figure skating normally, interested in watching real-life competitions.
Q: The interior of Yu~topia Katsuki is a very unique world.
Tamura (Seiki)-san, who was responsible for the design, is the person who works with me since the first anime I directed, as the art designer. He has a good sense of fun and he's really good at adding a special flavor to his designs. I think, if we just drew everything exactly in the same way as it appears in the photos we took for references, then it wouldn't really be even worthwhile to work on the designs. Especially in case of Yu~topia Katsuki and the main building where Yuuri's room is located, we wanted to make it look unique. We placed an order for a design that "shows you that the building has been remodeled, and some time has passed since the time when the Katsukis were running a ryokan [traditional Japanese inn] and now, when they use the ryokan building as their house with one-day [that is, you can't stay the night there] onsen facilities added. So inside the building we have a lot of elements from different cultures and time periods. In contrast, when designing the locations we wanted to look realistic, like the GP series venues, we used 3D-modelling.
Q: How was your co-operation with the sound director, Kiyomizu-san, going during the voice overs recording?
I have previously worked with Kiyomizu-san on "Lupin". He's very passionate about voice acting. He also has the ability to manage voice actors very well. He read the story we wanted to tell diligently and had a very good understanding of what we want to do, to the point that he was able to give me some ideas I've never thought about - I could entrust this job to him without any worries. When we were checking the voice overs together, we almost always agreed on the lines which sounded off - it made my life so much easier. In Yuri!!! from time to time we have scenes when we use manga-like deformations but when we were casting voice actors, it was very important for us to have actors, who can act naturally. All VAs are very talented, so basically the voice overs aren't that different from what I imagined they should sound like. Also I was the most grateful that Kiyomizu-san is also a skating fan. It is the director's job to explain everything to people who don't know anything [about the topic they need to work on], but it's so much better when you have to give only additional information to somebody who already knows a lot, than when you have to make somebody with 0 level knowledge reach level 2 or 3. The number of episodes we could work on together was not so big, so I wouldn't have much time to explain everything anyway - it was a luxury to be able to work with Kiyomizu-san, who already had know so much that I only had to give him some additional information.

Saturday 3 June 1837
7 ½
1 ¼
very fine morning – out at 8 20 in the barn and about till Joseph M- came for a hundred bricks to build the Listerwick pit cabin and set the bellows – went with him to the place – then to JO-‘s little field at Mytholm bridge – told JM- to see about the Lodge drift and getting water for Mark Town – had Messrs. James and Joshua Keighley at Listerwick pit – they returned to the hall and waited for me near ¾ hour till I came in at 10 ¾ - paid the Keighleys – breakfast in about 20 minutes till 11 25 – then had Mallinson David for Northgate and Ditto Stephen for Stump X Inn and Nelson for A- [reasons?] work done at the Hatters’ street cottages – and then had Rawson (William) plasterer for Stump X Inn – did the work as well as he could at the price – it just paid him journeymans’ wages and he made a good workmanlike job of it – price 10d. per yard – lives in one of A-‘s Hatters’ street cottages pays £6 a year and taxes – has no vote but would do his best to influence other people and vote blue if he had a vote – then had David Booth – gave him a check no.127 for £150 – he does not think the Hilltop roof timbers too strong – 50 of slate weigh 1 ton – near 1800 slate upon that roof = 36 tons weight – this and the situation being plain – weight and wind would have tired that roof in 2 or 3 years time had it been much tighter – wrote a little note to A- out about 1 ½ - with Robert and co. and the gardener in the Lodge road – the gardener lining out to the breadth just beyond the glen bridge and Robert banking up low side among the young beeches top of coal pit field sent George this afternoon with little note and A-‘s clean linen to Cliff hill – he brought me little note from A- on his return this morning – lucky I sent him – for sent him to Brighouse – out about till came in about (after) 4 to pay MR. Robert Schofield for joiners work at the Stump X Inn (of Broad Street H-x) a respectable looking man, and then at my desk paid him by check no.128 = £33.10.8 in full of £51.10.8 ½ - then at my accounts and had Ingham and Charles Howarth and had just dismissed the latter with £5 in a/c at 6 5 in ½ hour and went out sometime talking to John B- in the cow house – then met Sam Booth going away – all the rest gone – the gardener there near the glen bridge – with him some while gave him £10 in a/c of wages – then at the Lodge – Matty came back from Mr. Barbers’ – some while talking to her out of doors – then sauntered about the Lodge road and to the back Lodge gate, and came in about (after) 9 – from then to 10 ¾ removing books from great oak chest in the upper kitchen into the portable book case in the drawing room – then coffee – Blythe did not come back from H-x tonight till now 11 ¼ at which hour F42° very fine day – sat up making memoranda till 11 50 sat reading the newspaper till 11 40

Holy Book Reading: Liber LXV, Ch. IV
IV
1. O crystal heart! I the Serpent clasp Thee; I drive home mine head into the central core of Thee, O God my beloved.
2. Even as on the resounding wind-swept heights of Mitylene some god-like woman casts aside the lyre, and with her locks aflame as an aureole, plunges into the wet heart of the creation, so I, O Lord my God!
3. There is a beauty unspeakable in this heart of corruption, where the flowers are aflame.
4. Ah me! but the thirst of Thy joy parches up this throat, so that I cannot sing.
5. I will make me a little boat of my tongue, and explore the unknown rivers. It may be that the everlasting salt may turn to sweetness, and that my life may be no longer athirst.
6. O ye that drink of the brine of your desire, ye are nigh to madness! Your torture increaseth as ye drink, yet still ye drink. Come up through the creeks to the fresh water; I shall be waiting for you with my kisses.
7. As the bezoar-stone that is found in the belly of the cow, so is my lover among lovers.
8. O honey boy! Bring me Thy cool limbs hither! Let us sit awhile in the orchard, until the sun go down! Let us feast on the cool grass! Bring wine, ye slaves, that the cheeks of my boy may flush red.
9. In the garden of immortal kisses, O thou brilliant One, shine forth! Make Thy mouth an opium-poppy, that one kiss is the key to the infinite sleep and lucid, the sleep of Shi-loh-am.
10. In my sleep I beheld the Universe like a clear crystal without one speck.
11. There are purse-proud penniless ones that stand at the door of the tavern and prate of their feats of wine-bibbing.
12. There are purse-proud penniless ones that stand at the door of the tavern and revile the guests.
13. The guests dally upon couches of mother-of-pearl in the garden; the noise of the foolish men is hidden from them.
14. Only the inn-keeper feareth lest the favour of the king be withdrawn from him.
15. Thus spake the Magister V.V.V.V.V. unto Adonai his God, as they played together in the starlight over against the deep black pool that is in the Holy Place of the Holy House beneath the Altar of the Holiest One.
16. But Adonai laughed, and played more languidly.
17. Then the scribe took note, and was glad. But Adonai had no fear of the Magician and his play.
For it was Adonai who had taught all his tricks to the Magician.
18. And the Magister entered into the play of the Magician. When the Magician laughed he laughed; all as a man should do.
19. And Adonai said: Thou art enmeshed in the web of the Magician. This He said subtly, to try him.
20. But the Magister gave the sign of the Magistry, and laughed back on Him: O Lord, O beloved, did these fingers relax on Thy curls, or these eyes turn away from Thine eye?
21. And Adonai delighted in him exceedingly.
22. Yea, O my master, thou art the beloved of the Beloved One; the Bennu Bird is set up in Philæ not in vain.
23. I who was the priestess of Ahathoor rejoice in your love. Arise, O Nile-God, and devour the holy place of the Cow of Heaven! Let the milk of the stars be drunk up by Sebek the dweller of Nile!
24. Arise, O serpent Apep, Thou art Adonai the beloved one! Thou art my darling and my lord, and Thy poison is sweeter than the kisses of Isis the mother of the Gods!
25. For Thou art He! Yea, Thou shalt swallow up Asi and Asar, and the children of Ptah. Thou shalt pour forth a flood of poison to destroy the works of the Magician. Only the Destroyer shall devour Thee; Thou shalt blacken his throat, wherein his spirit abideth. Ah, serpent Apep, but I love Thee!
26. My God! Let Thy secret fang pierce to the marrow of the little secret bone that I have kept against the Day of Vengeance of Hoor-Ra. Let Kheph-Ra sound his sharded drone! let the jackals of Day and Night howl in the wilderness of Time! let the Towers of the Universe totter, and the guardians hasten away! For my Lord hath revealed Himself as a mighty serpent, and my heart is the blood of His body.
27. I am like a love-sick courtesan of Corinth. I have toyed with kings and captains, and made them my slaves. To-day I am the slave of the little asp of death; and who shall loosen our love?
28. Weary, weary! saith the scribe, who shall lead me to the sight of the Rapture of my master?
29. The body is weary and the soul is sore weary and sleep weighs down their eyelids; yet ever abides the sure consciousness of ecstasy, unknown, yet known in that its being is certain. O Lord, be my helper, and bring me to the bliss of the Beloved!
30. I came to the house of the Beloved, and the wine was like fire that flieth with green wings through the world of waters.
31. I felt the red lips of nature and the black lips of perfection. Like sisters they fondled me their little brother; they decked me out as a bride; they mounted me for Thy bridal chamber.
32. They fled away at Thy coming; I was alone before Thee.
33. I trembled at Thy coming, O my God, for Thy messenger was more terrible than the Death-star.
34. On the threshold stood the fulminant figure of Evil, the Horror of emptiness, with his ghastly eyes like poisonous wells. He stood, and the chamber was corrupt; the air stank. He was an old and gnarled fish more hideous than the shells of Abaddon.
35. He enveloped me with his demon tentacles; yea, the eight fears took hold upon me.
36. But I was anointed with the right sweet oil of the Magister; I slipped from the embrace as a stone from the sling of a boy of the woodlands.
37. I was smooth and hard as ivory; the horror gat no hold. Then at the noise of the wind of Thy coming he was dissolved away, and the abyss of the great void was unfolded before me.
38. Across the waveless sea of eternity Thou didst ride with Thy captains and Thy hosts; with Thy chariots and horsemen and spearmen didst Thou travel through the blue.
39. Before I saw Thee Thou wast already with me; I was smitten through by Thy marvellous spear.
40. I was stricken as a bird by the bolt of the thunderer; I was pierced as the thief by the Lord of the Garden.
41. O my Lord, let us sail upon the sea of blood!
42. There is a deep taint beneath the ineffable bliss; it is the taint of generation.
43. Yea, though the flower wave bright in the sunshine, the root is deep in the darkness of earth.
44. Praise to thee, O beautiful dark earth, thou art the mother of a million myriads of myriads of flowers.
45. Also I beheld my God, and the countenance of Him was a thousandfold brighter than the lightning. Yet in his heart I beheld the slow and dark One, the ancient one, the devourer of His children.
46. In the height and the abyss, O my beautiful, there is no thing, verily, there is no thing at all, that is not altogether and perfectly fashioned for Thy delight.
47. Light cleaveth unto Light, and filth to filth; with pride one contemneth another. But not Thou, who art all, and beyond it; who art absolved from the Division of the Shadows.
48. O day of Eternity, let Thy wave break in foamless glory of sapphire upon the laborious coral of our making!
49. We have made us a ring of glistening white sand, strewn wisely in the midst of the Delightful Ocean.
50. Let the palms of brilliance flower upon our island; we shall eat of their fruit, and be glad.
51. But for me the lustral water, the great ablution, the dissolving of the soul in that resounding abyss.
52. I have a little son like a wanton goat; my daughter is like an unfledged eaglet; they shall get them fins, that they may swim.
53. That they may swim, O my beloved, swim far in the warm honey of Thy being, O blessed one, O boy of beatitude!
54. This heart of mine is girt about with the serpent that devoureth his own coils.
55. When shall there be an end, O my darling, O when shall the Universe and the Lord thereof be utterly swallowed up?
56. Nay! who shall devour the Infinite? who shall undo the Wrong of the Beginning?
57. Thou criest like a white cat upon the roof of the Universe; there is none to answer Thee.
58. Thou art like a lonely pillar in the midst of the sea; there is none to behold Thee, O Thou who beholdest all!
59. Thou dost faint, thou dost fail, thou scribe; cried the desolate Voice; but I have filled thee with a wine whose savour thou knowest not.
60. It shall avail to make drunken the people of the old gray sphere that rolls in the infinite Far-off; they shall lap the wine as dogs that lap the blood of a beautiful courtesan pierced through by the Spear of a swift rider through the city.
61. I too am the Soul of the desert; thou shalt seek me yet again in the wilderness of sand.
62. At thy right hand a great lord and a comely; at thy left hand a woman clad in gossamer and gold and having the stars in her hair. Ye shall journey far into a land of pestilence and evil; ye shall encamp in the river of a foolish city forgotten; there shall ye meet with Me.
63. There will I make Mine habitation; as for bridal will I come bedecked and anointed; there shall the Consummation be accomplished.
64. O my darling, I also wait for the brilliance of the hour ineffable, when the universe shall be like a girdle for the midst of the ray of our love, extending beyond the permitted end of the endless One.
65. Then, O thou heart, will I the serpent eat thee wholly up; yea, I will eat thee wholly up.
Love is the law, love under will.

Ok so I’ve done a complete re-read through and one thing that kept nagging at me was how little Gideon and Harrow’s relationship makes sense given its quite frankly abusive origins. Harrow spends her whole life making Gideon’s a living hell and Gideon just… forgives her. Total and complete forgiveness for an irredeemable girl.
At first I took the sudden shift in their relationship as lazy writing to rush along the end of the story, but that didn't make any sense either. Muir strikes me as an intensely purposeful writer. Then I remembered that Muir is also an intensely Catholic writer and it hit me. Muir isn’t writing a story about a healthy human relationship, oh no, she’s writing a story about Christ’s relationship with The Church… if Christ was a sword toting butch lesbian and The Church was a sardonic bone witch. Call it tender blasphemy.
Now Gideon’s role as a Christ figure is fairly easy to parse out given that her dad is… God. But for the sake of self indulgence (I have to put my 15 year long flirtation with Christianity to use somehow) I’m going to go through all the parallels anyway. There are a LOT of them.
Let’s start at the very beginning (a very good place to start).
Miraculous Conception
Luke 1:34-38
34 But Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I [e]am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; for that reason also the [f]holy Child will be called the Son of God.
Gideon is conceived by artificial means when one of God’s own servants (Mercy) delivers a sample of John’s genetic material to Wake, a ‘normal’ human woman who chooses to carry Gideon in her womb. Notably, the sample lives far beyond its point of expected viability, thus making the conception somewhat miraculous (“Only the sample was still active, no idea how considering it was twelve weeks after the fact” HTN 441).
The Cuckold
Matthew 1:18-25
18 Now the birth of Jesus the [a]Messiah was as follows: when His mother Mary had been [b]betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be pregnant by the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, since he was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her, planned to [c]send her away secretly.
Gideon the First decides not to kill his lover, Wake, and releases her out the airlock (AND HE TOOK PITY ON ME! HE TOOK PITY ON ME! HE SAW ME AND HE TOOK PITY ON ME” from Harrow’s vision of Wake’s note, HTN 124) just as Joseph took pity on Mary, his betrothed, by deciding to divorce her quietly instead of making her infidelity public which would condemn her to death by public stoning (Deuteronomy 22:21). Gideon the First knew that Wake was pregnant and didn’t tell John because he thought the baby was his. Similarly, Joseph goes on to raise Jesus as his own son.
The Birth
Luke 2:7
And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a [f]manger, because there was no [g]room for them in the inn.
Neither baby Jesus nor baby Gideon were given a proper cradle, one being laid to rest in a manger where the animals ate and the other stuffed in a transplant bio-container (GTN 23).
The Dead Children
16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.
King Herod intends to kill the prophesied King of the Jews and instead of finding the specific baby, he just has a bunch of them slaughtered. However, Jesus escapes the slaughter of the innocents by Herod when his parents secret him away to Egypt.
When the great aunts gas the nursery and kill the 200, Gideon is meant to die along with them but escapes her fate.
Now this event has a completely different biblical connotation for Harrow.
Firstly, the murder of the 200 children represents Original Sin. In the bible, Adam and Eve disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden, and as their descendants, all of humankind is doomed to also bear the weight of that sin from the moment we are born until the day we die. This is a fact that is drilled into Christians as soon as we’re able to understand it, we are born wretched and unworthy sinners, and there’s nothing we can do ourselves to fix that.
“I have tried to dismantle you, Gideon Nav! The Ninth House poisoned you, we trod you underfoot—I took you to this killing field as my slave—you refuse to die, and you pity me! Strike me down. You’ve won. I’ve lived my whole wretched life at your mercy, yours alone, and God knows I deserve to die at your hand. You are my only friend. I am undone without you.”
Harrow is a multitude, she is 200 children, the entire future of her house. Shes not just one human being,, she’s the whole damn church.
Naz/Nav
he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.
Although Gideon is not from the Ninth, she is given the Ninth name Nav when she arrives as a baby. Similarly, Jesus is known as Jesus of Nazareth, though that is not where he was born.
The Poor Bondservant
Jesus' role as a servant is emphasized many times in the bible. He was a carpenter's son born in a stable
Philippians 2:5-8
Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.
Gideon is described as being made “a very small bondswoman” (GTN 24)
The Sword
Matthew 10:34
Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.
The Wretched Sinner
Harrow is wretched, self loathing, and cruel.
She is in thrall of the enemy of god, a figure who was once gods most favoured warrior, cast into hell.
She is like the depiction of the sinner who loves the devil
It's important to note that Harrow isn’t a single person, she is a multitude, the entire future of her people condensed into one body.
The Enemy of God
20 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, nholding in his hand the key to othe bottomless pit1 and a great chain. 2 And he seized pthe dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and qbound him for a thousand years, 3 and threw him into othe pit, and shut it and rsealed it over him, so that she might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while.
Before the fall, Satan was described as a “guardian cherub” who resided in the garden with God (Ezekiel 28:14)
(a funny aside, in the bible the devil is known as the great deceiver but in HTN Muir specifies that Alecto is incapable of lying)
A Life of Abuse
Isaiah 53:3
"He was despised and rejected by mankind,
a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.
Like one from whom people hide their faces
he was despised, and we held him in low esteem”
They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff" (Luke 4:28–29).
Gideon lives a life of mockery and is abused by Harrow.
An Unlikely Savior
Despite the fact that Gideon does not fit the expected image of a Cavalier, Harrow chooses Gideon to be her sword and protector.
Despite the many openings Gideon has to make Harrow pay for the pain she caused her, she remains loyal to her
Trust
Harrow realizes that she cannot face the lyctor trials without Gideon, and places her trust in her
Christians are told they must place their trust in jesus in order to reach salvation
Purifying Water
Acts 2:38
Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Harrow confesses her sins to Gideon and puts herself at her mercy
Gideon forgives Harrow totally and completely, she baptises her
One Flesh
Mark 10:8
and the two shall become one flesh; so they are no longer two, but one flesh.
“The imagery and symbolism of marriage is applied to Christ and the body of believers known as the church. The church is comprised of those who have trusted in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and have received eternal life. Christ, the Bridegroom, has sacrificially and lovingly chosen the church to be His bride” (x)
Ephesians 5:25-26
25 gHusbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and hgave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by ithe washing of water jwith the word,
They take the vow of necro and cav, one flesh one end
Gideon’s forgiveness of Harrow is reaffirmed
Harrow risks her life to stay and fight with Gideon, even if it means her death and thus the destruction of her death. Her love for Gideon is now greater than her love for the Body.
The Sacrifice
John 19:34
Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.
They will look on the one they have pierced'" (John 19:36–37).
Gideon chooses to die for Harrow, death by piercing
and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
In order to complete the lyctor process, Harrow both physically and spiritually consumes Gideon
Because of Gideon’s sacrifice, Harrow attains eternal life at the right hand of god
The Tomb
The Resurrection
1On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus
Harrow turns her body into a tomb for Gideon, a tomb fashioned after that on the Ninth
Resurrection on the Third Day
Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Luke 24:46-47
“So many months had passed: and yet, at the same time, she had only lost Gideon Nav three days ago. It was the morning of the third day in a universe without her cavalier: it was the morning of the third day—and all the back of her brain could say, in exquisite agonies of amazement, was: She is dead. I will never see her again.” (HTN 374)
Just in case you missed this important piece of information, Muir repeats it three times.
Go, and tell them, then, that he that was dead is alive, and lives for evermore, and has the keys of death and the grave,"

An Example to Follow
"After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, 'Do you understand what I was doing? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, because that's what I am. And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other's feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you. I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message. Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them.'"1
I cannot even begin to imagine all the thoughts and feelings that Jesus was experiencing in the passage above. In the first verse of John 13 we read, "…Jesus knew that his hour had come to leave this world and return to his Father. He had loved his disciples during his ministry on earth, and now he loved them to the very end." Despite his feelings, He selflessly set them aside at the moment and focused on his purpose. He wanted to take advantage of every moment with his disciples to teach them, hands on, what it looked like to be a follower of Jesus. Not only did he actively model a life of service to them, but he also wanted to make sure they understood it and did it. He did not want them to have any excuse for not serving others. Jesus spent every moment leading up to his death serving and blessing others. What a beautiful example of love.
This led me to think of my life. When I encounter undesirable circumstances in life, many times the last thing I think about is serving or blessing others through it. Sometimes I prefer to avoid interacting with other people until the stress passes! But by doing this, I miss out on the blessings God has for me. Imagine the impact our testimony could have if we focused on our purpose instead of the problem. Loving and serving others through our problems or stressful moments is evidence of our faith and trust in God.
However, we will all have bad days and will at times need to take some time alone to process and pray. That is what Jesus did when he went to pray in Gethsemane. There came a moment when he told his disciples "My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me." Then he goes a little farther to be alone with his Father.2 Even in that he taught us… when we get overwhelmed or we don't know what to do, go to the Father.
Let today's scripture be a reminder and encouragement to us to actively follow Jesus by doing what he taught us to do.
Suggested prayer: Dear God, thank you for the example of love that you gave us in Jesus. I ask that you help me do the things he taught us to do. Serving and loving others was his purpose all the way to the cross. Even when he knew he would be betrayed, he did not let that distract him from doing what he needed to do. I pray that I would, like Jesus, focus on my purpose more than my problems, and when I feel overwhelmed, that I would go to you in prayer and trust that your will and plans are good. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus' name, amen.John 13:12-17 (NLT). Matthew 26:36-46.

Bringing a World of Adventure Hunting in to Your Home
Not everyone is not living in a position to wander the woods, desert, beach or ruins. I had that situation at one point in my life. And yes its depressing. And when you read others doing all these things its can really get to you. However there are a huge number of things yo CAN do to counteract the depression. Lets visit a good many of these things:
1) Everyone’s first Go-to is Roleplaying. Be its table-top or online. But not all Online games bring out the true desire to adventure, as they are limited to telling a specific story. As such I suggest avoiding using game maps and make you own real maps. Right down and study any runes in the game, study the magic tech in the game, write side stories of your character that can not be done in game. Create a history to the character you made. Some games are limited what you character looks like. Draw your own character and hang it by your game station.
2) If you have adventure wear, wear it about the house/apartment. Does not have to be all of it. Boots, a shirt, a vest, tunic, wristbands, cloak
3) If you have the money and talent turn kitchen into a tavern or saloon, line shelfs with bottles and plates and other tavern/saloon wear. Avoid cheese props. Study movie sets and get ideas from that.
4) Likewise turn your bedroom into an Inn room. Go ristic and simple with natural colors and materials
5) Burn in a cauldron or censor wood chips, herbs and incense,
6) Hang posters of nature about the walls in natural wood frames. If you can obtain some old wood window frames, you that as your poster frames. If possible find images of nature on line and print them out. Try to make all the images co-inside, so its looks like you are looking out into the same view. Change the posters with the seasons if possible
7) Place realistic life-size animals about your home: Snake, turtle, mice, birds, chipmunks, insects. If you have a ficus tree or a cluster of plants, place a birds nest with eggs in it
8) Play sound effects and ambient sounds in the house. Youtibe and other sites have a plethora of ambiance and sounds from cave to camp sites, tavern sounds, market squares, pirate ships, forests
9) Add a fountain/s in your home. Fountain pumps can be bought anywhere these days,
10) Terrariums! Make them and add them to your home. Even of the plants are fake
11) Aquariums! If your adventurous aestheic love is the see or any water setting like ponds, these are fantastic to have. And do not limit yourself to just fish: Crabs, snails, turtles, frogs, lizards, snakes. Even if you are not allowed to have pes, build an aquarium anywhere. The flow of the water from the filtar moving the plants can lend to the imagination
12) Wood, tin and copper and wrought iron objects
13) Leather bound books. Line a shelf with them,
14) Candles and lanterns. Some people can not have things where they live for safety mode. Even if you never burn them, have a cluster of candles anyway. Just the look of lanterns and candles plays with the mind. You can also invest in battery ones but I think they are silly looking
15) Bowls of fruit: Wood bowls and real fruits and nuts about the house.
16) Seasonal and year round garlands and wreaths about the house. Clusters of ferns. If you do not have a green thumb, go fake if need be. Ferns and spider plans are my fave.
17) Drift wood and moss covered wood.
18) If you have your own Adventure clothes and gear do not bury it in a closet. Get a mannequin and display it,
19) Fur, leather, blankets, wool, sheepskin throws and pillows.
20) Banners and tapestries
21) Invest in a couple of mortar & pestle sets, one for the kitchen and one for the bathroom is you have the room. (Confession: I collect them)
22) Hang herbs and dry plants in the kitchen.
23) Clay pots and assorted pottery about the house. Try to sick with OLD looking styles. Check out some sites or books on ancient styles for an idea
24) Antlers add a wonderful feel to ambience. Even if fake. Now they are made into door handles, draw knobs and so much more. (DO NO go hung deer and elk JUST for their racks)
25) Bowls and vases of snail shells, acorns, pine cones,
26) Rolls and displays of maps,
17) Glass and Ceramic bottles: Display a few or better yet, use them! fill them with shampoos, liquid soaps, drinks and what ever else you use and look at daily
18) Old style dip pens and ink vials on your desk along with scrolls of parchment and an old leather bound journal,
19) Color glass baubles like the ones at christmas time and “witch balls” These are great if your Aesthetic is the sea or in the Witchy profession,
20) Wood wand display. Not talking about Harry Potter here. Do a little reserach and find or make a REAL one. Display it on your desk or mantle staff. If you have a set, even better.
21) A Statue of an ancient god,
22) Baskets and wicker to hold things
23) Metal goblets and drinking horns
24) If you have one or several hand your shields on the walls,
25) Oil hurricane lamps,
24) Hang and display Gourds about. If you know how to carve and stain gourds, all the better,
25) Birds houses. In the house?? Sure, why not?
26) Feathers. Sometimes just a vase of ling feathers helps. If they are feathers you find in your walks, just as better. Each one has a story
28) Bowls of rocks. Not only does this bring the natural world in but its said that a bowl of rocks by the door and window wards off negativity.
29) Old wood boxes. Just do not collect them but USE them. put whatever in them as storage. Afraid you will forget what’s in it??? All the better. There is your treasure at the end of your search.
30) Corn dollies. These folk cultural dolls and designs have their roots into the ancient world. a display of them, especially during the late summer, really invokes the harvest season
31) Ceramic and wood bake ware in the kitchen. Ads a rustic tavern feel. This could include bread boards and bowls, wood spoons, rolling pins,
32) Replace DVD covers with parchment or wood texture covers. Sometimes a wall of game and DVD cases can kill an ambiance you are striving for. If you can not print out all these coves, hang a tapestry over your shelf unit or add wood shutter doors
33) Cover your library of bright color books with leather, paper of plether, No access to leather? See of someone has an old leather jacket they are ditching you can cut up
34) Wood flutes, harps, ocarinas, pan pips, lyres and rustic drums add to a great tavern-ish display.
35) A tall vase of cattails gives ambiance for this that over adventures in places like rivers and lakes,
36) If you have a collection of crystals, sea glass and gemstones, show them off in a wood box or basket,
37) Halloween Witch bottles add to the adventure appel. (I have a buhnch and have all my teas in them,
38) Fancy yourself an Librarian or treasure seeker? Have a display of “artifacts” like (potters, tiles, scales, bones, glass, wood), Find some broken pottery shards and make them look like Greek pottery. If you sculpt make a remnant of a state or a bone or prehistoric tooth. Create your own artifacts and put stories to them.
39) Hang a bunch of leather sachets and small bags from a hook or sit them on a shelf,
40) Find yourself a rustic tea set,
41) Collect vintage clay and wood tops. Tops have been around since ancient Assyria and Babylon.
42) Display a collection of carving tools or depending on your likes, a small anvil and hammer,
43) Hand on hoots of rack by your door or wall woven wicker hats, leather caps and witch/witch hat, head wreaths,
44) Display an old stick/straw/grass broom head wreaths,
45) Display a helm or helmet you have in a place that speaks “I am at the ready”
46) Fold a small stack of old burlap bags and place on a shelf and use them to store things like potatoes and onions,
47) Display and basket of wood knitting needles and wool,
48) Grow plants, flowers, herbs and small trees. Even small pots of just grass adds a sense of nature and Adventure (The ancient Greeks would grow grass for their New Years Eve celebration) I have lemon trees in my windows I grew from seeds.
49) A Fish Net works great to add an aesthetic look to your space.
50) If nothing more find an artist and have him/her draw your aesthetic self as you see yourself in different poses, gear and situations. Blow thing up power size and hang them about your space
51) If you can not do any of this, create a physical scrap book of pictures and images that’s screams your aesthetic ideals. Visit it daily and add to it.
NOTE: While all these ideas are great starts, DO NOT over do it. Less is more. Rustic and simple. Avoid cheesy plastic props and things like signs screaming “I am a Proud Viking!” Investigate films, movies and history into your aesthetic loves and the world behind it. Do not create clutter. Make you space livable and function to your NEEDS. Make you space your home, not a museum. If your space is cluttered and does not bring you a feel of your Aesthetic feelings you may need to pull back on some of your props.

25 - Trap
Summary: A week after Y/n almost brought Clarke home, her father and Abby head to Polis for a Summit Delegation, and send her and the group to Mount Weather, where the rest of Farm Station are being held. Azgeda attacks the mountain, leading to the deaths of 37 people.

In the week since you almost found Clarke, you were stuck with inventory checks. Of course, when that wasn’t happening you were arguing the recent decision to put the people of farm station who didn’t fit into Arkadia into Mount Weather. It was a stupid decision in itself, but apparently only you and Bellamy could see that.
Today, however, was the day that you would be travelling to Mount Weather with the others, a list of things to fix and do from Abby. You spent the ride lost in your thoughts about the outcome of the Summit. Clarke was there, in Polis, and you knew you could help with the delegation. It barely registered for you that you had arrived, only noticing when you heard the metal creaking open.
You stepped out, noticing Bellamy staring off into the forest. Walking up to him, you put a hand on his shoulder to get his attention. “Hey,” You said. “What’s going on up in that pretty little brain of yours?”
“The delegation; I should be there. We both should.”
“I know, Bell. But I’m sure everything will be fine by the time they get back, and maybe Clarke will be with them when they do.” You assured him. “It just sucks that my dad thinks he can teach me a lesson by benching me. Him of all people should know that it won’t work,”
You smiled at your boyfriend, who was chuckling at your words. He moved past you to grab one of the bags filled with gear to fix up Mount Weather, handing it to you with a kiss to the cheek before grabbing his own. As you walked up to the doors of Mount Weather with Bellamy and Octavia on either side of you, Raven told Gina about how she saved Sinclair back on the Ark, although you weren’t really listening.
Hers and Gina’s words faded as you closed in on the mess hall, hearing the music, chatter, and clanging of utensils against plates. You tensed, the familiarity of it all reminding you of the previous inhabitants of the mountain and what they did to get to the ground. Pike welcomed you, inviting you to join him and the others. You knew you would never live comfortably in these halls, not like them.
“Someone’s made themselves at home,” Raven commented.
Octavia swept her eyes across the room before speaking. “There must be 30 of them in here,”
“36, but the more, the merrier,” Pike said, shaking Bellamy’s hand.
“36? Wow, the grounders are gonna think we moved in,” You commented sardonically. The thought alone of them living here permanently scared you, knowing that it could possibly cause a war in itself with the grounders. Again.
Bellamy gave you a pointed look as Pike spoke. “Well, there was no room at the inn.”
Octavia spoke once again and Bellamy cut her off with a stern look, leading her to hand ehr bag to Raven and leave the mountain. You were tempted to follow her, but Sinclair came through one of the doors and caught your attention.
“Reyes, you’re 3 hours late,” Sinclair reprimanded. “We’ve got no power to medical, fluctuations on levels 2 and 3, and blown fuses all over the place. Get on it.”
“You can do no wrong, huh?” Gina commented lightly as Raven walked away, you and Gina following after her to help with the electrical issues. You could barely fix a few of the blown fuses when Pike radioed Sinclair and called off fixing the power, saying they were needed back in the mess hall.
“Why the hell are they calling us off?” Raven asked. “I’ve got tripped circuits all over the grid.”
“Oh, whatever it is, it supersedes fixing the power problem.”
As soon as you were in the mess hall with the others, Bellamy spoke. “Alright, listen up. If we want to get to Polis before the attack, we have to move.”
“I’m sorry, attack?” You shook your head, not believing what you were hearing.
“Attack? Do we have confirmation of that?” Sinclair asked.
“We radioed, but no answer.”
“They may already be dead, for all we know,” Pike said, striking a chord. “And if they are, we need to be ready to respond.”
“Don’t make this about the missiles,” Sinclair told him.
“This is about survival,” Pike argued. “We don’t have the numbers, but the missiles in this mountain even the playing field, and you know I’m right.”
“Even if I did agree with you, we still don’t have the launch codes.”
“No, but we have me,” Raven spoke up.
At that point you didn’t bother to listen anymore, instead turning to Bellamy to see what he thought about using the missiles. He was looking at Raven, however, and you couldn’t read his face. He almost seemed okay with using the missiles, as if they didn’t almost kill his sister. Raven and Sinclair walked over to the entrance with Gina, waiting for you to join them.
Bellamy moved over to you and spoke. “You should stay here with them,”
“Bellamy, I’ve already decided. I’m going.” You told him, watching as he formed a response.
“No, you’re not.”
“Yes, I am, Bellamy! My dad is in Polis, if he gets hurt because of this, I need to be there.” You persisted. “And if you get hurt, then what am I gonna do?”
“That’s exactly why you can’t go. I need to keep you safe,” Bellamy’s eyes showed you that he wouldn’t be giving up any time soon. You weren’t either, but you knew this would get you both nowhere.
“Fine, I’ll stay. But I will be groveling and complaining that I didn’t go the entire time.” Bellamy laughed and pulled you into his arms, giving you a kiss. “Just, don’t do anything too stupidly heroic, please.”
“Got it, averagely stupid heroic.” You laughed and pulled him into a tight hug before parting ways. You towards Sinclair, Raven, and Gina, Bellamy in the opposite direction. You followed the trio to level 7, where the command center is, hoping to find the codes in there. After hours of you trying to make sense of the coding in the silent comms room, Raven spoke to herself.
“Damn it,”
“What happened to that Raven Reyes confidence?” Sinclair asked from behind her, eyes glued to the screen.
“It’s a 12-digit code, there are a trillion combinations.” Raven said frustratedly. “It’s gonna take me a minute.”
You looked up from your screen across from Gina as she did, glancing at the angry woman and thinking over a few different ways you could find the code. “Gina, Y/n, what do you got?”
“Don’t look at us, we’re just grunts.”
“Oh, come one, guys. It’s gonna be dark soon.” Sinclair said, pacing lightly. “We’re working analog, we’re working digital. What are we missing?”
“How is the president going to remember a number that long?” Gina questioned.
You thought about Dante and how old he was, knowing that there was no possible way for him to remember that long of a number for too long. “Not that well, he was old.”
“Wanna bet he wrote it down somewhere?”
“Oh, come on.” Raven turned around. “That’s like setting the launch codes to all zeros.”
“And yet, it’s better than anything we’ve come up with.” Sinclair countered.
“Y/n and I will check the president’s office.” You stood and grabbed a walkie from beside you as Sinclair tossed one to Gina.
“We’ll keep working the tech angle. Hopefully one of us will get lucky.”
As you walked down the hall to the president’s office with Gina, you spotted something on the end of the hall. A sign, with an arrow pointing to the left that read ‘record’s room’.
“Hey, Gina, there’s a records room down the hall. I think I’m gonna check it out, see what I can find.” You told her as you stopped at the president’s office door.
“Sure, I’ll see what I can find in here,” She nodded towards the office. “Just keep your radio on channel 5, holler if you need me.”
You nodded and continued down the hall, following the path to the record room, pulling open the door to reveal floor to ceiling filing cabinets, lining the walls and in the middle. You studied them, seeing that each drawer was dated with the year. You went to the first cabinet to your left, near the door, seeing it was dated 2188, which was last year.
Pulling the drawer open, you took the files from it and placed them on the ground, sitting with them to get a little more comfortable. You flipped through each file carefully, and when it didn’t give you any useful information, you put it on the other side of you and started with a new one. Your radio was sitting right in front of the filing cabinet you were sitting in front of, for easier access.
By the time you’d poured over most of the thick files in the first drawer, your radio cut in. “Gina to Raven, come in.”
“Go for Raven,”
“I’ve got nothing.” Gina sighed. “No launch codes. I guess our luck is still holding.”
“Same here,” You sighed. “You’d think a records room would keep track of the launch code, but it’s all just population count and radiation tolerance.”
Your radio crackled and Raven’s voice came through. “Okay. Keep looking, we’ll do the same.”
You set your radio back where it was when it crackled again, a muffled scream passing through it. Raven called out for Gina and you did, too. When Gina didn’t respond, you pushed the heavy file off of your laps and got up from your position, hurrying back down the hall to the president’s office. The hallway had never felt as long as it did now, feeling like centuries had passed before you reached the glass doors.
As soon as you were in front of them, you made eye contact with a grounder in white war paint, making the connection in your head moments before he attacked you. Ice Nation’s attack. It wasn’t Polis they were going after, it was Mount Weather. Once you finished your thought, he charged at you with a bloody knife.
You attempted to block his hit as best as you could without taking the time to pull out your sword, and he missed his target, hitting your left shoulder instead. You screamed in pain, but that fueled your will to fight even further. He removed the blade from you and you fell to the floor, but as he leant over you to finish you off, he left himself open for an attack.
You pulled your leg up and smashed it into his groin, watching him fall as you struggled to sit up. You pulled your dagger from your holder and got his shoulder as well, pulling it out and leaning forward to hit him in the side of the head with your elbow. He takes the blow and stands after a few moments, looking over at the desk and taking off down the hall. You followed his line of sight and gasped, seeing Gina slumped onto the desk with blood pouring from her mouth.
“Gina!” You rush over to your friend, pulling her up to see her shirt stained red. “Oh my God, Gina. What the hell happened?”
“The code, it’s on his arm.” She said slowly. You knew what she was talking about, but only gained a full perspective when you looked at the timer on the desk.
You pulled her radio off the desk and spoke to Raven. “We have a problem. A grounder attacked us and set off the self-destruct sequence. The codes, they’re on his arm. You have to get them,”
With that, you lifted Gina’s arm and put it around you. “Let’s go, we’re getting out of here.”
“No,” Gina protested. “I’ll be fine, go get the codes and come back for me after,”
You looked at Gina sadly, putting her back down. “I will be back for you, Gina.”
She sent you a smile and you took off towards the stairway to the emergency exit, knowing that the elevator wouldn’t be fast enough. You heard the thumping of footsteps and knew Raven was just up ahead, hearing Gina tell her through the radio that there was only 45 seconds left until the mountain came crumbling down.
Speeding up, you caught up with Raven and made it up the stairs, through the exit. The grounder was on top of Sinclair and Raven acted fast, pulling out her pistol and killing him. Sinclair pushed the body off of him as Raven shouted to get the codes from his arm. You ran with her, pushing past the searing pain in your shoulder and ripped the sleeve off of one of his arms as Raven practically screamed into the radio for Gina.
Raven started to make her way back to the entrance and Sinclair chased after her, as did you, but the building blew up before you reached it, sending all three of you flying backwards. The landing winded you and sent a shockwave of pain through your body. Once you were able to sit up, you helped Raven and you went to Sinclair, but he was unconscious. You both sat by him as Raven grabbed her radio to contact Bellamy.
“Bellamy, Bellamy come in.” She said. “The grounders attacked Mount Weather.”
You looked at the smoldering remains of the mountain and although you were grateful it was erased from the earth and you would never see it again, you knew that 37 of your people had died there today, one of which was your best friend.
Bellamy’s voice came through the radio. “What are you talking about?”
You were quick to take over the radio to give a response. “It’s all gone, Bell. They- they set off the self-destruct, I got hit in the shoulder, and Gina... she’s- Bellamy she-”
You managed to compose yourself a little longer. “Raven, Sinclair and I are the only ones left.” The adrenaline wore off quickly and your tears couldn’t be subsided this time. You broke down alongside Raven, the tears and pain taking all of your energy and soon enough, you collapsed into the darkness of sleep.

DOGS IN ELK
An insanely funny story of "domesticated" dogs reminding us that they are still kinda wild.

From: Edward Hume <[email protected]> Date: Sun, 21 Nov 1999 20:40:36 -0500 Subj: Dogs in elk ____________________________________________________________
I edited the follow-up thread
The original is here:

dogs in elk Posted by Anita z8 Seattle ([email protected]) on Fri, Oct 22, 99 at 14:44 The following apparently appeared recently on one of the newsgroups, rec.pets. It sounds pretty believable to me--though it's so funny, I'm not sure that I care. It's pretty long, but it's worth it. ---------------------
Anne V - 01:01pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1318 of 1332) Okay - I know how to take meat away from a dog. How do I take a dog away from meat? This is not, unfortunately, a joke.
AmyC - 01:02pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1319 of 1332) Um, can you give us a few more specifics here?
Anne V - 01:12pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1320 of 1332) They're inside of it. They crawled inside, and now I have a giant incredibly heavy piece of carcass in my yard, with 2 dogs inside of it, and they are NOT getting bored of it and coming out. One of them is snoring. I have company arriving in three hours, and my current plan is to 1. put up a tent over said carcass and 2. hang thousands of fly strips inside it. This has been going on since about 6:40 this morning.
AmyC - 01:19pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1321 of 1332) Oh. My. God. What sort of carcass is big enough to hold a couple of dogs inside? Given the situation, I'm afraid you're not going to be create enough of a diversion to get the dogs out of the carrion, unless they like greeting company as much as they like rolling around in dead stuff. Which seems unlikely. Can you turn a hose on the festivities?
Ase Innes-Ker - 01:31pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1322 of 1332) I'm sorry Anne. I know this is a problem (and it would have driven me crazy), but it is also incredibly funny.
Anne V - 01:31pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1323 of 1332) Elk. Elk are very big this year, because of the rain and good grazing and so forth. They aren't rolling. They are alternately napping and eating. They each have a ribcage. Other dogs are working on them from the outside. It's all way too primal in my yard right now. We tried the hose trick. At someone elses house, which is where they climbed in and began to refuse to come out. Many hours ago. I think that the hose mostly helps keep them cool and dislodges little moist snacks for them. hose failed. My new hope is that if they all continue to eat at this rate, they will be finished before the houseguests arrive. The very urban houseguests. Oh, god - I know it's funny. It's appalling, and funny, and completely entirely representative of life with dogs.
Kristen R. - 01:37pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1324 of 1332) I'm so glad I read this thread, dogless as I am. Dogs in elk. Dogs in elk.
Anne V - 01:41pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1325 of 1332) It's like that childrens book out there - dogs in elk, dogs on elk, dogs around elk, dogs outside elk. And there is some elk inside of, as well as on, each dog at this point.
Elizabeth K - 01:57pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1328 of 1333) Anne, aren't you in Arizona or Nevada? There are elk there? I'm so confused! We definately need to see pics of Gus Pong and Jake in the elk carcass.
Anne V - 02:03pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1329 of 1333) I am in New Mexico, but there are elk in both arizona and nevada, yes. There are elk all over the da*n place. They don't look out very often. If you stand the ribcage on end they scramble to the top and look out, all red. Otherwise, you kinda have to get in there a little bit yourself to really see them. So I think there will not be pictures.
CoseyMo - 02:06pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1330 of 1333) "all red;" I'm not sure the deeper horror of all this was fully borne in upon me till I saw that little phrase.
Anne V - 02:10pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1331 of 1333) Well, you know, the Basenji (that would be Jake) is a desert dog, naturally, and infamous for it's aversion to water. And then, Gus Pong (who is coming to us, live, unamplified and with a terrific reverb which is making me a little dizzy) really doesn't mind water, but hates to be cold. Or soapy. And both of them can really run. Sprints of up to 35 mph have been clocked. So. If ever they come out, catching them and returning them to a condition where they can be considered house pets is not going to be, shall we say, pleasant.
CoseyMo - 02:15pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1332 of 1333) What if you stand the ribcage on end, wait for them to look out, grab them when they do and pull?
Anne V - 02:18pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1333 of 1333) They wedge their toes between the ribs. And scream. We tried that before we brought the elk home from the mountain with dogs inside. Jake nearly took my friends arm off. He's already short a toe, so he cherishes the 15 that remain.
Linda Hewitt - 02:30pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1336 of 1356) Have you thought about calling your friendly vet and paying him to come pick up the dogs, elk and letting the dogs stay at the vets overnight. If anyone would know what to do, it would be your vet. It might cost some money, but it would solve the immediate crisis. Keep us posted.
ChristiPeters - 02:37pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1337 of 1356) Yikes! My sympathy! When I lived in New Mexico, my best friend's dog (the escape artist) was continually bringing home road kill. When there was no road kill convenient, he would visit the neighbor's house. Said neighbor slaughtered his own beef. The dog found all kinds of impossibly gross toys in the neighbor's trash pit. I have always had medium to large dogs. The smallest dog I ever had was a mutt from the SPCA who matured out at just above knee high and about 55 pounds. Our current dog (daughter's choice) is a Pomeranian. A very small Pomeranian. She's 8 months old now and not quite 4 pounds. I'm afraid I'll break her.
Lori Shiraishi - 02:38pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1338 of 1356) Bet you could fit a whole lot of Pomeranians in that there elk carcass! Anne - my condolences on what must be an unbelievable situation!
Anne V - 02:44pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1339 of 1356) I did call my vet. He laughed until he was gagging and breathless. He says a lot of things, which can be summed as *what did you expect?* and *no, there is no such thing as too much elk meat for a dog.* He is planning to stop over and take a look on his way home. Thanks, Lori. I am almost surrendered to the absurdity of it.
Lori Shiraishi - 02:49pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1340 of 1356) "He is planning to stop over and take a look on his way home." So he can fall down laughing in person?
Anne V - 02:50pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1341 of 1356) Basically, yeah. That would be about it.
AmyC - 02:56pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1342 of 1356) No, there is no such thing as too much elk meat for a dog." Oh, sweet lo*d, Anne. You have my deepest sympathies in this, perhaps the most peculiar of the Gus Pong Adventures. You are truly a woman of superhuman patience. wait -- you carried the carcass down from the mountains with the dogs inside?
Anne V - 02:59pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1343 of 1356) The carcass down from the mountains with the dogs inside? no, well, sort of. My part in the whole thing was to get really stressed about a meeting that I had to go to, and say *yeah, ok, whatever* when it was suggested that the ribcages, since we couldn't get the dogs out of them and the dogs couldn't be left there, be brought to my house. Because, you know - I just thought they would get bored of it sooner or later. But it appears to be later, in the misty uncertain future, that they will get bored. Now, they are still interested. And very loud, one singing, one snoring.
Lori Shiraishi - 03:04pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1344 of 1356) And very loud, one singing, one snoring. wow. I can't even begin to imagine the acoustics involved with singing from the inside of an elk.
Anne V - 03:04pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1345 of 1356) reverb. lots and lots of reverb.
Anne V - 03:15pm Sep 9, 1999 PDT (# 1347 of 1356) I'll tell you the thing that is causing me to lose it again and again, and then I have to go back outside and stay there for a while. After the meeting, I said to my (extraordinary) boss, "look, I've gotta go home for the rest of the day, I think. Jake and Gus Pong are inside some elk ribcages, and my dad is coming tonight, so I've got to get them out somehow." And he said, pale and huge-eyed, "Annie, how did you explain the elk to the clients?" The poor, poor man thought I had the carcasses brought to work with me. For some reason, I find this deeply funny. (weekend pause)
Anne V - 08:37am Sep 13, 1999 PDT (# 1395 of 1405) So what we did was put the ribcages (containing dogs) on tarps and drag them around to the side yard, where I figured they would at least be harder to see, and then opened my bedroom window so that the dogs could let me know when they were ready to be plunged into a de-elking solution and let in the house. Then I went to the airport. Came home, no visible elk, no visible dogs. Peeked around the shrubs, and there they were, still in the elk. By this time, they had gnawed out some little portholes between some of the ribs, and you got the occasional very frightening glimpse of something moving around in there if you watched long enough. After a lot of agonizing, I went to bed. I closed the back door, made sure my window was open, talked to the dogs out of it until I as sure they knew it was open, and then I fell asleep. Sometimes, sleep is a mistake, no matter how tired you are. And especially if you are very very tired, and some of your dogs are outside, inside some elks. Because when you are that tired, you sleep through bumping kind of noises, or you kind of think that it's just the house guests. It wasn't the house guests. It was my dogs, having an attack of teamwork unprecedented in our domestic history. When I finally woke all the way up, it was to a horrible vision. Somehow, 3 dogs with a combined weight of about 90 pounds, managed to hoist one of the ribcages (the meatier one, of course) up 3 feet to rest on top of the swamp cooler outside the window, and push out the screen. What woke me was Gus Pong, howling in frustration from inside the ribcage, very close to my head, combined with feverish little grunts from Jake, who was standing on the nightstand, bracing himself against the curtains with remarkably bloody little feet. Here are some things I have learned, this Rosh Hashanah weekend: 1. almond milk removes elk blood from curtains and pillowcases, 2. We can all exercise superhuman strength when it comes to getting elk carcasses out of our yard, 3. The sight of elk ribcages hurtling over the fence really frightens the nice deputy sheriff who lives across the street, and 4. the dogs can pop the screens out of the windows, without damaging them, from either side.
Anne V - 09:58am Sep 13, 1999 PDT (# 1401 of 1405) What I am is really grateful that they didn't actually get the damn thing in the window, which is clearly the direction they were going in. And that the nice deputy didn't arrest me for terrifying her with elk parts before dawn.
AmyC - 09:59am Sep 13, 1999 PDT (# 1402 of 1405) Imagine waking up with a gnawed elk carcass in your bed, like a real-life "Godfather" with an all-dog cast.
Anne V - 10:01am Sep 13, 1999 PDT (# 1403 of 1405) There is not enough almond milk in the world to solve an event of that kind.
