this is more of an explanation of the universe than headcanons. Those will be next, but I hope it's still interesting!! This will be tagged under "null kny pet au" to not be confused with anyone else's version

Long story short— reincarnation is a thing here! Bad people turn into animals and go through an endless cycle over and over until they've truly repented for their misdeeds.

To make things interesting, I bent the rules of how things usually work! This is my version of a pet au, and of course, is still yandere because your cult leader is an addict. I'M SORRY IF YOU WERE EXPECTING FLUFF.... THATS LATER. TRUST!!!!!!!!!

The pet aspect of this au!

Demons are hybrids who're likely to restart their cycle, giving them their nickname of lost souls. Human characters are hybrids at the pinnacle of rehabilitation, referred to as guiding souls. And you, who's nearby their hybrid shelter. Either working in it or being in its vicinity.

Guiding souls are allowed to be housed by responsible candidates, but it's unlikely for lost souls. Either way the problem is they turn everyone away except you.

Both guiding souls and lost souls have a deep rooted affection towards you. You definitely don't remember it, but they've been with you for many, many, MANY life times, always restarting and eagerly awaiting for stage three and four of the cycle to find you again.

Lower and Upper moons + Muzan have reincarnated more times than you can fathom, yet they can remember most of them. Their psyche is fragile and incredibly hostile towards almost anybody. Not recommended for new staff or housing candidates.

Slayers + Ubuyashiki reincarnated more than average. They committed sins they're ashamed of and show great promise for change. They're practically regular model citizens, except for the occasional outburst. Very well liked by staff and potential housing candidates!!

Guiding souls and lost souls are separated in the shelter but are occasionally allowed to roam and interact with each other. They bicker at best and get into full fist fights at worst. It's highly recommended to be gentle but firm with both. Only guiding and lost souls have both seen and experienced the worst of what life can offer, and staff don't want to cause a frenzy by startling them.

They're not always transparent with their thoughts. It's more than likely that they don't tell you about their experiences as most would rather focus on their life now rather than how it used to be or what's coming next. Some will tell you if asked, others will dance around it, and others initially refuse.

Still, they'll go through the agony and pain of life after miserable life again and again if it meant being blessed by your light in one of them.

If they're able to have feelings this intense for one being, lost souls refuse to see themselves in the wrong. Feelings like this should be praised. They should be considered good in the eyes of the divine, shouldn't it? What if the universe is wrong for once, huh?! They've lied, cheated, stole, hurt, even killed all to be able to get to you sooner. To feel you again! Their feelings for you are so pure, there's no way it could possibly be another reason to restart!! Even if it was, does it really matter?! What the universe dictates is irrelevant anyway, you're their choice and always will be. So long as you have a soul that continues to shine brightly, they'll find their way towards you when the cycle restarts. Guiding souls are.. anxious. They want to do good by you, want to be seen with love like they've achieved before, want to get to know every version of you and fall in love with every iteration. The finish line is RIGHT there, they know this, it's always been so close, and they'll be able to live by your side as equals.. But they know if they complete the cycle, complete stage four, become fully reborn, they won't remember you. After so many horrible lives lived, they finally understood what it meant to be remorseful about what led them into this mess. Saying that, they can't bring themselves to let go of you. What's the point in living a peaceful existence when there will always be a part of them missing? That's why they "personally restart" their cycle, uncaring that they're so close to forgiveness.

Not every life was kind on them. Silver lining, at least they know they have a new body without the physical scars of their experiences anymore, and of course, you! Though.. even you were harsh sometimes, but they'd rather pull all their teeth out than leave your side. Preferably, they hope you'll throw them a bone and be cordial at least, but if you want to beat, scream, or drive them away, they'll always come back. No matter what you do, they'll forever be loyal to you and you only.

If this is what it takes, they'll love you over and over in this never ending torturous loop until time ends, so until then, spare them a glance, yeah? You don't know how much they've missed you..

Unnecessarily detailed lore:

SHORT STORY LONG, reincarnation is real here, and it's commonly known that when bad people die, their soul is reborn into an animal. Bad meaning murder, assault, ruining someone's life, intense crimes like that. It can be avoided if the soul had no other choice or feels deep remorse prior to their human life ending.

Failure to meet those requirements begins "the cycle." Each lifetime is a show of dedication to turn back into a full human. A step towards forgiveness from the world they wronged. Souls will retain the excruciating memory of their lives before, only given the mercy of forgetting and keeping the wisdom they earned once they're reborn into a full blooded human.

Animals who're just animals exist, but it's extremely difficult to tell who's a soul under trial and who's not.

It starts off simple, an insect. Depending on how bad the soul was, they'll be something that has a difficult life, like those moths that starve to death upon entering adulthood. Souls will always progress to the next stage after this one, temporarily forgetting about their previous lives.

The next life is exactly the same, but souls regain the ability to remember all their past lives again.

Next is a land mammal or aquatic creature, something easier than before, but still not strong enough to cause havoc. They have a little more intelligence than before.

Then souls become half human, half animal, or more commonly known, hybrids. They might as well be human with animal characteristics, but due to societal interference and their history, they're regarded as subhuman. Like pets.

Lastly, they are fully human, where they get to keep their appreciation for life and forget the past.

The real test is during stage four. If the soul proves to have learned nothing from their previous lives, they'll restart the cycle from the beginning and try again. Ending their life will not count and only restart the cycle. They must die of natural causes.

Extra notes:

There are souls who've restarted numerous times that when they reach stage four again, they're very fragile or aggressive. Due to this, humans adapted to shelter them and help give them another chance at life. It's not uncommon for these souls to try and use their memories to give themselves an upper hand in their next life, forcing humans to give them less autonomy. The more aggressive a soul the more humans will have to use force to keep them down such as sedation, muzzling, restraints. It's often used for lost and guiding souls out of any other type of hybrid but used as a last resort. Risks like these are one of the main reason why hybrids aren't allowed on the streets without supervision or an owner. Souls under trial can get attached to one another, familial wise, platonically, or romantically. As a twisted sense of both mercy and punishment, the world allows them to be reborn together. The cruel part comes when the older of the pair is the first to be reborn, leaving the younger to follow when it's their time. At least they know that the world will allow them to find each other once again in the next life. Sometimes, souls under trial try finding the human soul they've grown attached to in stages three and four, in this case, you. Because of the never ending cycle of punishment, they crave your hold, your care, your love. You. They want to get back to you as soon as possible, and if that means coming to you as a small animal first, then so be it. Some have probably done that numerous times before.

Truly, reincarnated souls who've grown attached to someone are dangerous both to others and themselves. They'll do anything for their human and let their human do anything them.

The current life cycle where this au takes place is one of the best life times they've all had. So yes, cuddling them is like winning the jackpot!

talking about this fic, as always putting the answer under read more for people who dont wanna read lol!!!!!!!

OHHH MY GOD IM INSANE ABOUT THEMM. went into this fic knowing that i wanted mikan and akane to have their own povs because i thought theyd bring different perspectives, especially in comparison to makoto's pov. i knew what i wanted mikans story to involve and i had a vague idea about akanes (fun fact rantaro was originally gonna be kaito LOL) and then like two chapters into writing mikans point of view i was like waiiiitttt a minute. wait a minute hold on. what if they were in love. and what if they were so not normal about it

it made so much sense for the story i wanted both of them to tell that immediately i went into my notes and started pivoting a few things LMFAO. i just think that their relationship (or their pining at least lol) is able to neatly underline some of their core themes/issues in this fic, whether that be for better or for worse. through the lens of their relationship im hoping to convey mikan's sheer capacity of worry and insecurity, how she finds it difficult to move through life without another person to rely on even if she has done a bit of growing since the simulator and how that dependency affects her. and then of course akane's emotional repression is highlighted through their relationship (her forgetfulness, her inability to communicate, LEAVING all of the time), but also it's a great reminder of just how protective akane can get even if she isn't there. not to mention how worried she gets about mikan despite her absolute refusal to worry.

they care about each other to the point of unspoken codependency and while it is absolutely making both of them feel safe and happy it is still a reminder of their underlying problems. akane would do anything to avoid somebody thinking she is weak enough to be cared for. but all mikan can do is care and care and care about her. both of them are so willing to shoulder the problems of the other but neither of them want to be seen as burdens, so all they end up doing is silently dance around their issues until eventually somebody caves. INSANE YURI MOMENT

mikan still absolutely has anxiety LMFAO and dare i say..... she's...... kind of better????????????????????? or maybe not actually. going into this i had to think about how to write these characters in a way that felt true to who they are but also remembering that they have GROWN, even if danganronpa really makes them feel as if they havent lol. this is a mikan who has likely endured years of therapy, even if that therapy is SHIT at best. this is also a mikan who has been shoved into the spotlight rather forcibly and has basically been given the choice to adapt or die. so i probably shouldnt say that shes "better", it's more that shes had to modify herself to fit this new lifestyle of hers. she hasnt been given much of a choice, and i imagine shes had a few years to really fuck up and struggle before reaching this point. she is constantly in the spotlight and basically always under scrutiny, so ive sort of swayed away from her wanting attention and focused more on how she reacts to this attention-- shes grown bitter from the negative and she doesnt think she deserves most of the positive. it's this hurricane of problems with mikan and a lot of it involves her own struggle to view herself as a good person, which stems heavily from the insecurities she already had in her game and intensified by what happened outside of it. years of being seen as this iconic chapter three killer has absolutely worn her down a bit, but there is still a part of her that yearns for control over her life and the people surrounding it. she is still SO anxious, ive tried to really hammer home quite a few recurring symptoms with her like her nervous tics, sickness/lack of appetite, hair shedding, etc!! and she is extremely bitter about how shes been treated, too, which im hoping to elaborate on further on down the line. however she really, REALLY can not be passing out in front of cameras or throwing any fits about the exploitation shes endured since shes been a teen because the company she works for wont accept anything that isnt on brand. and underneath it all shes still that scared little kid that desperately wants to please

she's an older mikan but she is still very much hurting, not necessarily any less but in a way that's a bit different if that makes sense :)

im awesome! story: flashback to elementary school, i was best friends with this girl and we would have killed and fought wars for each other. i loved her so much and literally could not imagine being without her but then! she moved! and after two years spent trying to find some way to contact her, i moved too! and i lost all hope. flash forward to the beginning of this year, one of my friends will not shut up about this girl she met at tae kwon do - she's cool and hot and kind and she reminds her a lot of me!! two days ago, i saw a picture of her for the first time, and something lit up in my brain, but i shelved it as oh i probably know her dad. took a selfie with my friend, who sends it to her buddy and! she says OMG WAIT DID TREE GO TO [insert my elementary school here]?? AND THEN ALL THE MEMORIES HIT ME. it was her!!!!!!! and i was so excited i went nonverbal, stole my friends phone, and texted her in a frenzy and she was like I MISSED YOU SO MUCH and i started crying! in a good way!! and then i came out to her bc she asked me how ive been and i said gay and trans and then she said "slay 🔥" she's coming to our friend's birthday party and i can't wait to tackle her as soon as i see her

also i've been eating so many laddus that chotta bheem is jealous 😭 it was my sister's half-sari function 12 days ago and we have so much food left over and its so awesome i am stuffing myself

Themme Fatale

Moving from the army to intelligence wasn’t something Cahir ever thought he would do. But the opportunity came up and he’d hoped he’d be able to leave behind the hyper-masculine environment. That had been difficult to fit in with and he had to keep parts of himself under wraps so tightly, he sometimes worried he’d forget who he was. Stepping into the office on his first day, his heart sank a little as he took in the people he would be working with. The men were muscle bound, jostling and laughing much like those in the army had. Meanwhile, the women were all terrifyingly beautiful, feminine and almost otherworldly. Despite the warm welcome, the firm claps to the back and handshakes, Cahir wondered whether he would ever truly fit in.

“We’ve got the morning briefing then we’ll do introductions properly,” the man who introduced himself as Geralt said.

From across the room, someone hollered, “Hey Wolf, your Magpie back yet?”

Rolling his eyes, Geralt turned to yell back. “Ask Yennefer, she’s the one who sent him out.”

“Well, Witch?”

“He’s getting coffee if he knows what’s good for him,” one of the women growled back, glaring. “And if he wants to come tonight, he’s not getting you any Lambert.”

The morning meeting involved having Cahir stand at the front of the room and smile awkwardly while he was introduced to the room at large. It was a blessing to be able to sit back down again and try to become one with the chair so nobody stared at him curiously anymore. It was almost like they could sense his otherness, at least, that was what it felt like to Cahir.

All of a sudden the door to the meeting room flung open and a whirlwind of colour and chaos bundled in.

“Sorry I’m late! I brought coffee to make up for it.” Cups were distributed with winks and grins. “Who am I kidding, I wanted coffee, knew I was going to be late so got everyone else coffees so I wouldn’t get into trouble. Oh hello, who is this cutie?”

Cahir stared up at big blue eyes from where he had slid down in his chair. Obviously he’d found the token employee who had let his fingers linger on Yennefer’s as he passed her a cup before sitting down next to Geralt, pressing obnoxiously into his space to stare at Cahir.

“If you’d been here on time,” Vesemir sighed, “you would have met Cahir, the newest member of our team.”

It was only when he pinched the bridge of his nose that Cahir thought he saw a hint of nail varnish, subtle but there. It gave him a tiny bit of hope, along with Jaskier’s bitchy fawning over Yennefer and Geralt. It was Eskel who spotted his staring and beckoned him over.

“If you know what’s good for you, you won’t say anything about them. It’s a sure fire way to not make friends around here.”

In a way it was sweet how Eskel and everyone else seemed to support the trio but Cahir felt awful that it was assumed he would judge or say something unsavoury. That’s what he got for having an army background he supposed.

He had been warned that his hours could be erratic and sometimes he might be called in on a day off. What he didn’t expect was for that very thing to happen not a week later when he was dressed comfortably, not expecting to go out. His phone rang, Vesemir was summoning him in. There was barely any time to swap out the billowy shirt for something more traditional before a car turned up for him. Going in, Cahir didn’t expect Jaskier to squeal and jump in his way, heading him off.

“Oh I just love your eyes!” The eyeliner that Cahir had put on earlier, that he’d completely forgotten about, not like he’d have had time to wipe it off. Before he could make up any excuse, Jaskier had him by the arm and was dragging him towards Lambert. “Look! Lamby! His wings are even sharper than yours. Aren’t they amazing?”

A gentle hand reached for Cahir but waited for his nod before it gripped his chin, turning his face this way and that. Lambert let out a low whistle.

“You’ll have to teach me. It would drive the others wild.”

“If you could please not steal my operative,” Tissaia interrupted and beckoned Cahir away. “There’s a charity fundraiser tonight. I was going to send Renfri but they’ve come down with a cold. So you’ll have to take their place. It’s nothing risky, we just need to make sure it goes off without a hitch. There have been threats from the more narrowminded groups. Triss and Yennefer will set you up with your outfit and tech.”

Which was how Cahir found himself in a room full of clothes of every size and colour. While Yennefer rifled through the suits, eyeing him up, Triss was talking through the ear piece, how to change channels and the like. It seemed like pretty standard fare, what he’d used in the army before. Of course, as it seemed to be the norm for Jaskier, he bundled in just as Cahir was eyeing up some of the dresses.

“Yen, my darling, have you no taste?” He bounced over to her and looked at the black on black suit she was pulling out. “That’s so severe. I think we can go a little more native for the fundraiser.”

That made no sense and Cahir raised an eyebrow in question. It had Jaskier grinning. “It’s for an LGBTQ+ charity, didn’t Tissaia tell you? Pretty big deal, most of us will be there in some capacity. Lambert will make for a fantastic waiter, don’t you think? I had Aiden pestering me to make sure he’s in a classic bunny outfit, cute little tail and all. But sadly that’s far too crass for the evening. But there is a Lambert sized outfit now winging its way to their house now. Eskel’s good like that and helped me pick the right size.”

With so many words spouting out of Jaskier, Cahir barely could keep up until he realised that something silky was being pressed into his arms.

“Tell me if this isn’t your kind of thing.”

Cahir stared at the dress, a soft grey dress that promised to be figure hugging. It was gorgeous but Cahir was almost scared to put it on. He didn’t know how everyone else would react, because it wasn’t like he wanted to be seen as a woman. But he didn’t really like being seen as a man either.

“You can pick the suit, I just had a hunch. My apologies if I got it wrong.” Jaskier’s voice was quiet.

“Have you broken him?” Yennefer snapped, stalking closer.

“He is making a choice.”

Which was true, but it wasn’t the choice Jaskier thought he was making. Still staring at the dress, Cahir steeled himself.

“They. They’re still making a choice. And I think it’s the dress please.”

There was no dramatic gasp, no growl, no glare, not even a gleeful cry of “knew it” with demands for bets to be paid up. Instead, Cahir was allowed ushered towards a curtained off bit to get changed. As Yennefer walked them over, she turned and asked in a low voice, “want me to tell the others?”. Maybe it was a cowardly thing to do but Cahir nodded, not sure how the office would take it.

It shouldn’t have been a worry, it turned out. As Cahir shimmied into the dress, turned in the mirror to admire the lowcut back, everything felt right. Stepping out, there were a few more people in the room. Lambert was the one to let out a sharp, appreciative whistle.

Bounding forwards, Jaskier fussed a little with how the dress fell before stepping back with a wide grin.

“Everyone, please tell Sabrina to step aside from her usual role. The office now has a new Themme Fatale.”

I do I do! It gets a little complicated here in Feelings Land for them but bare with me!

I feel like I gave to much of this away because I actually did want to turn my ot4 into a fic one day but meh, might as well get the ideas out my head. I can always AU it in the future. 

-> Knuckles and Shadow would be dating first ofc, since they’re OTP but eventually down the line as years past Knuckles would probably recognize his affection for Sonic is becoming more romantic than platonic as they get older.

-> I can see Shadow not liking this at first because even though he and Sonic have become good friends over the years, he’s always held some kind of envy over Sonic with how at ease he is with his boyfriend when he had to learn to be the loving boyfriend he is now.

-> But Sonic is very thoughtful about how his friends feel and is Knuckles and Shadows' biggest supporter. So after a few (more like a lot) of heartfelt conversations with Knuckles and the blue idiot, discussing boundaries, comfort levels, and some trial dating, Shadow warms up to the idea.

-> He’s not attracted to Sonic in any way, shape, or form like he is attracted to Knuckles at first, but Sonic has a way on growing on people.

-> Watching Knuckles and Sonic interact is like watching two completely different storms that absolutely should not converge under any circumstance, meld into each other so effortlessly.  

-> Have to be honest, Shadow is a little jealous at first. It took a lot of time for him and Knuckles to be like that. But of course, Sonic has experience under his belt. He’s known Knuckles far longer so it doesn't surprise him that they go just as good together romantically if not more so.

-> It takes a while but eventually Sonic and Shadow do become more fond of each other than just platonically. There’s a lot of boundaries between their relationship but the three of them work through it.

-> Sonic has a much easier time with this than his dark counterpart.

-> It takes a little bit under a year for the three of them to settle into something comfortable and lose the awkwardness around each other. After that, it’s ‘drive Knuckles nuts day’ almost every day the three of them happen to all be spending time together.

-> Sonic learns just how much of a little shit Shadow can be, with both surprises and elates him. He’s still much more on the reserved side of things but none the less, he has his moments where he humors the blue hedgehog in driving their echidna up a wall.

-> Same with Knuckles to be quite frank, only much worst. Shadow knew his boyfriend could be an imp from time to time, but he didn’t realize just how much of one he could me. Especially with Sonic around.

-> It’s safe to say the two of them drive him even more insane.

-> Rouge enters the picture a little later and it’s Sonic’s idea more than the other two.

-> Rouge is honestly the game changer of this dynamic. It challenges all of them the most. 

-> Knuckles reaction goes something like  “Are you kidding me?!” Nothing against Rouge herself, her and Knuckle are on good terms but Sonic brings it up just a year and a half after he found himself plopped between the two. “Just how many people are we adding here? Isn’t there a limit?!” ->To which Sonic just grins and responds “...I mean, we never really discussed a limit so-” -> Sonic likes Rouge in all honesty! He thinks she’s really pretty, funny and one of the only people he’ll admit being more charming than himself. He’s much more laid back about handling his feelings for other people than the other three so he is of course the most easy-going when it comes to the idea of adding her to their relationship.

-> Shadow is shocked but not in the same way he was when Sonic started to wiggle his way into their hearts. He’s more on the lines of curious about how his friend would react to such a thing. Shadow doesn’t object to it and is more open to the possibility since Sonic was probably his hardest hurdle to get through. Shadow respects Rouge and cares about her very much, so if he can warm up to Sonic of all people, being his boyfriend, then Rouge should be a walk in the park.

-> For Knuckles... it’s complicated. He liked her at one point when he was younger but not in a romantic sense. He admired her and found her stupidly attractive, in a way he never really viewed another girl before. (much to his embarrassment) but he wasn’t romantically or sexually interested in her back then. Plus, he doesn’t think Rouge is even the slightest bit interested in him. (Oh how wrong he is) 

-> Rouge quite literally chokes on whatever she’s drinking when Sonic tells her about this.

-> Her feelings for Knuckles and Shadow are well known to the blue hero because again, he’s very good at reading people, but she didn’t know he knew that.

-> Surprisingly enough, Rouge and Sonic meld together way too easily when she joins the trio. Both Shadow and Knuckles are surprised by this.

-> At the time Rouge doesn’t have any romantic feelings for Sonic at first(Boy does that change, lemme tell you, they are joined at the hip later on) so it’s easier for her to just relax and be little shits together with him. With Shadow and Knuckles, however... yeah, it’s a lot of trial and error.

-> A lot, of trial and error. (She re-enters the relationship at least 2 to 3 times)

-> Rouge honestly doesn’t know how to juggle her feelings for both of them and the idea of polyamory was never an option that crossed her mind so she struggles the most.

-> Rouge doesn’t think it’s bad or anything and she’s all for having three boyfriends rather than just one... but it’s the fact that she has to deal with the feelings that really mess her up.

-> She’s not used to facing her feelings head-on and the L-word honestly terrifies her. And the three of them use the word quite often. It’s intimidating to say the least.

-> She really struggles showing romantic affection but not because she’s incapable but because she honestly fears rejection. She’s more of the jealous type (her and Shadow have that in common) and doesn’t understand how the three of them work in a relationship like Sonic did, so she struggles to integrate herself into the bunch the most.

-> To which Sonic treats with the patience of a saint.

-> Shadow finds it more amusing than anything.

-> But Knuckles well... he struggles. He doesn’t know what to do with someone like Rouge at first. She’s very different compared to the others and he doesn’t know how they’d work in a romantic sense at all.

-> Which in itself is an obstacle because Rouge fell for him first, so his rejection would hurt the worst.

-> For some time, they’re both walking on egg shells with each other.

-> Her lack of letting herself feel and be vulnerable and not being as blunt with her feelings as the rest of them are puts a strain between them. Knuckles is used to the two people he loves being upfront with him about their feelings. Rouge isn’t like that at all.

-> Knuckles is close to just giving up when the two of them get into a big argument and he questions if Rouge even like any of them or if she’s just doing this for fun. Rouge is already feeling more vulnerable than she’s ever felt in her life so she blurts out exactly how she feels about them. With tears and all, and it shocks out of all of them. It’s the first time any of them had seen her like that. Though this ends up being exactly what they needed to bridge that gap and luckily, in this argument, Knuckles was paying closer attention than in the previous ones. (Don’t worry they all hug and cuddle it out with a little bit more ugly crying coming from our lovable bat)

-> Honestly, Rouge entering their relationship challenges and changes Knuckles in many ways. Knuckles is affectionate towards the other two, but he recognizes that he needs to show Rouge that affection even more so, for her to feel safe opening up to him like that since her biggest flaw is that she fears rejection. Knuckles can’t read Rouge (It took him a while just to be able to read his boyfriends and that’s because they’re more upfront with him about their feelings) so in order for him to even begin to understand her, she needs to be able to talk to him.

-> And Knuckles does really care about her and wants to try harder before they decide to call it quits, now that they can actually get somewhere.
