Okay, this is a weird one, but stay with me!

Maverick is sitting at the airport bar after Goose dies, looking just as wrecked as can be — and a guy sits down next to him, one around the same age, with big gray eyes and an instrument case that he plops down by their feet. 

Mav doesn't even look up. “Go away, Paulie.” 

Paulie doesn't budge, just frowns when he sees that what Mav is drinking is ice water. “Ice water? You must be hurting if you can't make something better, usually you're halfway through an amphora when I find you this glum.”

“Leave me alone.” 

“You…” Paulie sighs, for real this time, crossing his arms and nudging Mav with his bent elbow. “Hey, igemónas, mortals die. You know that, I know that, just look at my track record… most of my conquests end up killing themselves or turning into foliage to escape me, or they —”

“Hyacinthus.” Mav cuts him off, without lifting his head.

Paulie looks struck at his words and a little sad, “You didn't love him like that. You didn't love this one like that, right?” 

Mav whips his head around, teeth clenched, eyes wild: “I did. I did and you did nothing when I screamed for you to save him. I can't fix them like you can.” 

The ground below them threatens to burst with thick green vines, to grab and drag them into the soil below. The sound of flutes is distant, staticky in the air around them. 

“I’ll drive you mad for it.” Mav threatens, a hint of twisted horns beneath his messy black hair, his green eyes struck through with gold. He looks as wild as he did when Paulie first met him, Zeus’ bastard son reincarnated through his thigh, Paulie’s own half-brother — a god of rebirth, favored by an orphic cult long before he was preternaturally castrated and rendered a god of drunken fools. 

“You won’t.” Paulie hums, “You’ve always been more mortal than god, Dionysus.” He picks up his lyre case. “Still Semele’s son, I suppose.” 

Mav grieves, still turned away, and barely pays Apollo any mind as he slips out the door. 

(You can't tell me that Maverick isn't the most perfect depiction of Dionysus. Well, the older versions anyway, when he looked like a scary twink).
