to me, it’s like if Lottie is their Priestess, Taissa is this unknowing God. I like to imagine that Van’s invulnerability is almost a divine protection from Tai’s other side. Tai cannot bear to lose Van, so Van is never lost. Van prays to their forest god and it sleeps next to her.

The others feel a call back to the wilderness, but Tai is the wilderness. The soil is in her organs, the roots, her bones. She almost walks off the ledge that Crystal falls off a day later. Lottie prays over the baby but an argument with Tai causes the birth.

Tai has a power in her that goes beyond. If the wilderness chooses Lottie as a messenger, then Tai is the vessel. It’s like the call for the others is the pounding of a drum but Taissa only hears her own heartbeat.
