I think Paul and Darry miss each other every single day for the rest of their lives.

Even though they broke, even though it ended with the two of them tearing into each other with harsh words they didn’t mean, even though they couldn’t bring themselves to hurt when they were standing face to face and could only admit to themselves that they could have been wrong once it was too late.

Even though Darry pretends he hates Paul with all his heart. Rejects him in the cruelest words he can find whenever he’s brought up. Acts like just saying his name is a terrible crime.

Even though Paul could cry for forever just thinking of Darry’s sharp eyes that softened for him. Even though he beats on Darry’s kid brother just to get a reaction out of him. Even if Paul would rather die than admit he’s crossed a line with that.

They regret how things went until they can’t spend a moment free from the chains of what could have been.

Even though, when the time comes that they could save each other, they slam each other into the ground, swinging fists and soaking themselves in mud and rain and blood- blood that means it really is over.

They never forgive each other for the end, but more so, they never forgive themselves.
