so i binged all of s8 since like midnight and spent half of the last ep SOBBING. and i am NOT a crier. like. thinking they were gonna permanently lose their reality turned on all the fucking waterworks. allura’s sacrifice?? more sobbing. then crying from relief and also sad (allura) when they actually got their reality back. and then

AND THEN

ALTEA IS BACK?? BUT ITS THEIR REALITY??

and like lance is pretty much living there now and like the way he changed so much AND HIS MARKINGS 😭😭😭 like i love klance don’t get me wrong but oh my fucking god. what happened with him and allura. SOBBING. he literally cared for her more than anything and i can’t fucking imagine the shit he went through trying to accept and move forward once she was gone.

howeverrrrr I DO hate sheith 😊 bc of several reasons. it starts with the age gap and how old the two characters were when they hypothetically met (which I don't remember exactly bc it's been ~5yrs since I watched this show and also I've read too many fanfics of TA shiro meeting 14-16yo keith) but in theory it would've been mid teens keith and early-mid 20s shiro.... so like a mid high schooler (teenager) and someone who could have finished their undergrad maybe even a masters (adult with a fully formed frontal lobe).... and then by the time of the series keith is 18yo now (I somehow remember this fact) putting shiro in mid-late 20s.... both are scenarios that make me recoil with disgust

EDIT: while looking for the pics I put at the end of answering this ask I found these which you know decide for yourself how old they were when they met but personally I think keith looks very baby like barely high school but more middle maybe even elementary school?

another reason is what their relationship was already established as bc keith was this student turned drop out and shiro was an alumni / TA / teacher at the garrison (again, I don't fully remember) who took keith under his wing and mentored and took care of him. regardless of what his title was with the garrison, shiro was an adult that keith trusted and looked up to which would y'know scream power imbalance and predatory when you try to write in romance

This morning I took the garbage out, vacuumed the floor, tidied up some boxes, and scrubbed Sporticus's water bowl. I showered without my phone today because I've been intentional about not watching/listening to something unless I have an actual desire to because most often I just try to fill the silence. For breakfast I made corned beef hash with onions and bell peppers with 2 pieces of toast. I chopped all the peppers I bought into strips and froze them for sandwich use. I watched Bojack while eating breakfast.

I got to stream on time and warmed up trying to draw my otter in the spongebob maid outfit. I also sketched and priced another guy's commission. I had trouble sketching and was also worried I'd have nothing good to draw because my heart has not been in it lately to the point where I think it might be best to not try and force myself to draw something unless it's for work obviously. I finished both of Shiro's commissions today which put me just over my daily quota since they were both small. I remember getting irritated at not being able to draw her hands well and figure in general. I just wasn't good at it today and I feel bad that some people's commissions suffer because of it.

After stream I heard my new speakers come in so I tried to set them up but realized I had no way to plug them into my PC and headphones at the same time. Unfortunately I have to send them back which reminds me I also need to send back this other thing I've been putting off. I have no excuse since I just give them to my dad to take to UPS whenever he ends up going to town. I also wrapped Daisy's last present that just came in. Afterwards XQC started streaming so I tuned in while I tried to make Hoover stew. I got bored of him and switch to Bojack again while I cooked and ate. It turned out okay, healthy and filling at the very least. I'll probably try making it again. Then I opened a Dr.Thunder and got to work.

I finished a request for Tag which I think turned out well. Then I worked on a late Venus new year's pic for 1 hour. I was struggling with the colors and decided to sort them out later. Right after that I did day 1 of the yoga challenge which wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, she started off with some physically testing poses I struggled to hold. It felt good to stretch though. I did it in the barbie-like flower world in VRchat. This weird guy requested off me but I denied. After that I buckled down and started my new secret project for 1 hour which went well. I enjoyed doing it and it was relaxing since I had TOTK on my TV just resting with it's ambient music and weather.

When I was done with that I wanted to relax so I put on an episode of Bojack. Towards the end, Daisy became free so we called and chilled. I tried playing a little KSP but didn't do much before quitting. She shared her screen looking at Twitter and then we checked Zillow for outrageously expensive houses. We saw a plantation and also a well designed house for once. We also peaked at Disney houses, dog races, and cartoons out of context. She got to bed pretty quick and I played Neopets for her. I thought we were at the end but there's still at least another chapter to go so I was happy about that.

Today was okay, I was very productive and stuck to my schedule well which I always feel good about. In the evening I didn't know what I wanted and felt very boring while hanging out. I was afraid I was dull to be around and was feeling very self conscious about my hair. I think in general it's because I didn't have much to contribute today, like I had no substance.

Happy late birthday Shiro! 

My piece for the @vldexchange !! I started a short fic for this image but since my giftee dropped out I kind of lost motivation to finish it. Summary of it under the read more but basically Keith gifted Shiro an alien dog!

Basis of the story was: Keith couldn’t make it to Shiro’s birthday party because of issues with terrorist groups, and while Shiro understands, he’s a bit hurt and reflective on their drifting friendship. But Keith always has Shiro on his mind, and no dangerous missions or enemies will keep him from using his connections to send his best friend a gift on his sixth birthday. Shiro wakes on the eve of his birthday to find an alien dog on his door step. A datapad is left with instructions and a care manual, as well as nearly a year supply of food for it. Shiro likes animals, but he didn’t think he was ready to care for one on his own. Luckily, the dog is well behaved and scarily intelligent, and Shiro finds a friend in the animal. They bond as days pass and Shiro realizes what an amazing gift the dog is and how much help it is, from helping with basic household chores to calming him down from nightmares in the early mornings. Slowly the others, minus Keith who had gone radio silent since Shiro’s birthday, began to notice how well Shiro’s been looking and feeling and are amazed at how much he’s improved. The dog is his closest friend, his companion, and the dog is there when Shiro gets the horrifying news of Keith’s Emergency signal. The dog is there when Shiro gets the message that he’s been found, and it is there when Shiro and the others visit the Blades main base to be there for Keith during his recovery. The fic ends with Shiro finally getting the courage to admit his feelings and they both live happily ever after the end!! 

Again, kind of lost motivation, but maybe I’ll finish it and post it at a later date.

V Lance tries adjusting to living in lance’s body (temporarily mind you) while learning more about lance threw the other paladins, V also discovers the strange object in lance’s coat pocket.

Pidge explains what it is (it’s a cell phone X3 ) and tells V how it works.

It is threw pidge that V discovers the camera app and starts playing with it endlessly.

And of course, V has fun taking sexy selfie pics while in lance’s body (taking pics of themselves in nothing but boxers XD)

Then one day, V comes across Keith in the lounge fast asleep.

The evil vampire gears start turning in V’s head (or more accurately, lance’s head)

V pulls out a marker and starts doodling on Keith face.

After they finish, they take a selfie of themselves with the sleeping red paladin, then runs off giggling maniacally.

V finds pidge in the dinning room, typing away on her laptop.

V Lance: HAY PIDGE! Is there a way to send pictures to other people on these “cell phones”?

Pidge looks up and confirms.

Pidge: yeah, their called picture text messages.

Then proceeds to explains to V just how to send them.

After the explanation, V follows pidge’s instructions and sends the selfie to pidge’s phone.

Pidge pulls out her phone. She looks at the picture in confusion and amusement.

Pidge: what the? Lol what is this?

V Lance: I call it a “selfie prank” 😁

Pidge: lol nice! Does Keith know you did that?

V Lance: I’ll let you know when he wakes up XD hehehe

Not five seconds later, Keith comes into the room, still waking up and seemingly oblivious to the state of his face.

Keith: hay, have you guys seen Shiro?

Pidge and V look at each other then back at Keith. V trying to hold back a snicker while pidge just tries to keep a straight face.

Pidge: last I checked, he was on the bridge, talking to Allura.

Keith: thanks.

Keith then walks out. Still oblivious to what V did to his face.

After he leaves, V and pidge burst into a fit of laughter.

Pidge: OMG! Keith still doesn’t realize!

V Lance: I’m surprised you didn’t tell him hehe.

Pidge: it’ll be funnier when he finds out for himself. Lol

V Lance: my only regret is that I won’t be able to see the look on his face XD

Pidge starts typing away on her laptop. She hacks into the castleship’s security feeds and they both watch Keith on camera as he walks towards the bridge.

At this moment, Allura turns to look at Keith as well.

Allura: Keith, what on Altea did you do to your face?! Is this some kind of war paint?

Allura then pulls out a pocket mirror and hands it to Keith.

Keith looks at his reflection and both V And pidge both start to giggle as they watch his reaction.

While this was happening, V gets a brilliant idea.

V Lance: OMG! I just thought of how we can make this ten time funnier! 😁

Then pulls out lance’s cell phone and starts tapping away.

Pidge: what are you doing?

V Lance: aaaaand send! :D

Just as V says that, they watch as Keith gets a ping on his cell phone.

He pulls it out and looks at the screen.

They both watch in amusement as Keith’s face morphs from confusion, to shock, to anger in the span of three seconds. And then..

He then charges out of the bridge.

I can't get this out of my head but I like to imagine the protag loving to draw and doodle, and when they run out paper they draw using marker on their arms or legs and wanted to know how the rest of the summoners would react to seeing the protag show up to class one day with their arms covered up with random doodles they drew on themselves the night before out of boredom dksbsksns

Shiro knows about your doodling habits - during meetings he’s watched you doodle patterns on your fingers and hands as you listen to the latest news and updates, and just as often has watched you after said meetings having to viciously scrub it off over the safehouse sink because of the stains using markers and pens have left behind on the tables. It’s never been too much of an issue though, since you only resort to doodling on yourself when you’ve got no paper on hand, so Shiro’s been mindful of having a notebook or two stowed away at the safehouse for you to doodle on while you’re there. With that being said, that only accounts for the safehouse and not whenever you’re not there, so keeping up your paper supply in your room has always been your responsibility. So when you run out, on top of being bored in the late hours of the night, you end up drawing patterns on your fingers, then your palms, then the back of your hands, then your forearms...With class being on the next morning you’d had to rush out of your room before you’d had the chance to clean up your arms, so when the Summoners see you there’s a mixed bag or responses. Shiro just about topples out of his chair when he turns around as sees you enter the classroom, grinning as you offer the Summoners a wave and move to toss your bag onto your seat. Your arms are covered in drawings, all the way up from your hands to your elbows and disappearing under your shirt - he’s never seen you get so far up your arms with your doodlings before, and many of them are so neatly packed together you could almost say they looked like tattoo stencils. Most of the marks stick to one color, but there’s a couple that differ and those are the ones with more detail - clearly, you’d gotten carried away on them, but not in a bad way. Even though they’re only temporary, Shiro has a feeling that if one of the stricter teachers catches you, you’re going to end up getting an earful about the drawings and tells you that it might be a good idea to roll your sleeves down just in case one of them’s teaching this class. Sure enough, Mr.Triton comes in not a moment later and you drop your arms from your desk, tugging your sleeves back down to your wrists as you cast Shiro a sheepish grin at the close call.

Kengo has absolutely let you draw on him whenever you’ve run out of paper at the guild house - his arms are thick and broad giving you more than enough space to doodle just about anything you want. It’s gotten the two of you scolded more than once because he wouldn’t tell you to stop and you could quite easily doodle up to his elbows if left unsupervised, but of course this is mostly outside of school hours since you’ve got plenty of paper to doodle on when you’re in school or at your dorm. So that’s why Kengo does a double take when you come strolling into class covered right up to your elbows (and probably above if he’d have to guess) in just about every color marker that you possess. Kengo doesn’t even need to ask you why your arms are covered in scribbles, instead when you sit down Kengo shuffles his desk as close to yours as he can, asking if you’d brought any of those pens with you. In response you smirk, fish around in your pockets, and retrieve some metallic markers as you gesture for him to budge closer and uncap the gold stationary. It’s a miracle the two of you don’t get caught, considering you’re exchanging harsh whispers, with you biting back snickers as you chide him to keep still, and him trying to flex his arm because you’ve kept it pinned in one place for so long. You have to admit, the metallic markers look damn good on him, a mix of bronze, gold and silver making for some cool looking patterns against his skin by the time that you’re satisfied enough with your work to stop. You’re just thankful that the two of you don’t get called out on your arms, but you don’t stick around long enough to get stopped anyways, the two of you booking it the second that the bell rings and down the hall as Kengo brags about the new penwork you’ve given him.

Ryota loves to doodle with you! Whenever you’re drawing at guild meetings you’re quick to offer him one of your pens or markers and shuffle next to him so that the two of you can draw things together. He thinks you’re way more talented at it than he is, but he likes seeing how happy you get whenever you’re doodling, and he enjoys hearing you praising the drawings he makes by the time that the two of you have filled in just about every spot of the page. Sometimes he’ll see you drawing on your hands, but you never draw any higher than your wrist and he honestly thinks that your drawings look so pretty on your skin, especially the ones where you use bright colored ink! He just thinks it's sad you have to wash away all that hard work by the time you’re done, so you end up taking a picture of them whenever you make a new pattern on your hands. However, for what it’s worth he’s never seen you doodle on your hands in class, maybe because you could probably end up getting told off if you got caught doing it in lesson. That soon changes when you end up having to rush into class after staying up late doodling, not having the chance to clean up your arms by the time you have to leave to get in on time. You hadn’t even thought about rolling down your sleeves until you enter the room, and you can see Ryota’s expression light up at the sight of your arms when you drop down into the seat next to him, sleeves up to your elbows revealing a fraction of the doodles that now decorate your skin. He leans over to look at them, wondering how long it took you to finish drawing on your arms - everything looks so detailed! You must have been up for ages last night to get them all done! You nudge one of your arms against Ryota’s comparing your doodled arm to Ryota’s significantly less doodled one and hum in thought; then, you reach into your pocket and dig around for one of your pastel markers, pulling it out and showing it to him as you ask if he wants some. By the time the class is over Ryota’s got some pretty yet subtle new doodles thanks to you, fanning out across his palm, back and fingers ending just shy of his wrist; he’s happy as he admires them, and you can’t help but find yourself smiling at how good the patterns look on him as you fish out your phone, reaching out for his marker covered hand with your own and interlocking your hands as you snap a few pics to commemorate your newest doodles.

Toji nearly chokes when he sees your arms, not realizing that they’re drawings until you sit down and rest your arms on your desk, doodle covered fingers tapping on your desk as you wait for the class to start. Similar to Shiro, he’d say that it would probably be a good idea to cover up your drawings lest you want to get scolded by the teacher, only to watch you shrug and grin in response. Toji does allow his eyes to wander over some of your drawings, and for what it’s worth they are rather visually appealing; some of the markings are flowers, detailed lines to make up specific patterns, and others are scribbled words hidden between blocks of art close to the inside of your elbow. It’s clear you let your creativity run away with you when you were drawing, though he’s sure drawing them on paper would avoid the future hassle of trying to scrub them all off when the time came. You catch him staring and tug your sleeves up a little further, saying that if he thinks those are cool he should see the ones on your legs - you had a way bigger canvas to work on the little details on the images you drew. Toji gives you an incredulous look, searching for your bluff, but he realizes it’s not when you reach down you tug up your pant legs. He doesn’t get the chance to see the doodles in question when the teacher walks into the classroom, and at the sight of Mr. Triton you just about yank your sleeves down, flashing a convincing innocent smile as you greet the teacher like nothing’s out of place, catching Toji shaking his head out of the corner of your eye.

Moritaka has seen you draw on both your own skin as well as others whenever you’re bored and have no paper to use; however, he’s never seen you doodle anywhere past the wrist, sticking to just the palm of your hand or your fingers since you don’t always have time to sit down and focus when you’re not at school or at the dorm rooms. Which is precisely why he doesn’t expect you to come into class with pen markings up your arms, past your elbows, and even disappearing into your shit. When you take a seat next to him, Moritaka turns to greet you briefly, only just catching sight of your arms on your desk when he turns back to face the front. He looks again, then again, and by the third time his eyes are comically wide as he tears his gaze away to look at your face, brows raised as he looks into your face for some kind of explanation. Your only explanation is that you were almost late and didn’t have the time to scrub it all off before you had to get into lesson, though you take advantage of the opportunity to show him some of your favorite doodles. Leaning over to his desk you show him some of the things that you were able to draw the night before, still as vibrant as when you’d first drawn them; on one section there’s even a collection of flowers close to the center of your hand, with one of them being a peony that you can’t help but quip that it looks pretty close to Moritaka’s mark. You remark that you guys can match now and Moritaka finds himself chuckling a little at how proudly you show them off; though you unfortunately don’t have the time to show him much more than that, as being close to the front when the teacher walks in you drop your hands into your lap to hide the majority of marks, whispering to the therian that you can show him all the rest once class is over.

For my sixty-eighth Evangelion book review, here is Evangelion Shin Gekijouban: Jo - Entry File 1 (Evangelion New Theatrical Edition: Prelude - Entry File 1), published by Kadokawa Shoten. This 128-page paperback is a guide to the Evangelion: 1.0 movie that contains images, information, and interviews. (By the way, just to avoid confusion, I would like to point out that even though this book has "Entry File 1" as part of its title, an "Entry File 2" was never released!)

This book is not available in English or French - although there are a few tiny bits of English text such as the chapter titles - but there are plenty of pictures. Most of the illustrations are in full color, and there are a few sketches as well. The dust jacket is also removable, revealing a silver cover underneath. Here is the art from one of the book's pages, showing Ritsuko, Misato, Shinji, and Pen Pen (drawn by Shunji Suzuki):

The title page uses the art from the movie poster (that famous picture of Shinji and the other kids on a staircase), then there are a few pages of introductory text and screenshots from the movie, and then the Table of Contents.

The first chapter of the book is "Dramatis Personae", which starts with a two-page spread showing the main characters for the movie. The page I showed earlier in this review with Ritsuko, Misato, Shinji, and Pen Pen is one half of that spread. The other half shows Gendo, Kaworu, and Rei. (Considering that part of the movie is about Shinji becoming friends with Toji and Kensuke, I think it's pretty weird that those two boys aren't included. I mean, Kaworu managed to make it into this section, even though he doesn’t appear in the movie until the final scene!) After that, the chapter has a couple of pages showing screenshots of Evangelion Unit-00 and Evangelion Unit-01, and a page with the Nerv logo.

Next is a chapter called "Stage: A", with the subtitle "4th Angel & 5th Angel". This part of the book is devoted to the beginning of the film, with several pages of vibrant screenshots and quotes from the movie, plus some explanatory notes. Although most of the art in this chapter consists of screenshots, there is also a two-page spread of Rei drawn by Shunji Suzuki. Here is a tiny sample of a few screenshots from this part:

After that chapter is a two-page spread for the movie's English title, Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, and then a section called "Interview With" which has interviews with Megumi Ogata (voice of Shinji), Megumi Hayashibara (voice of Rei), Kotono Mitsuishi (voice of Misato), Shiro Sagisu (composer), and Utada Hikaru (singer of "Beautiful World").

The next chapter is "Stage: B", with the subtitle "Operation Yashima". This part covers most of the rest of the movie, and once again the majority of the pictures are screenshots. However, there are also some cool two-page spreads drawn by Kazuya Tsurumaki, Hidenori Matsubara, and Takeshi Honda. I'll show you the one drawn by Kazuya Tsurumaki, which depicts Kensuke, Toji, Shinji, and Rei at school. Unfortunately, a two-page spread like this is too large to fit into my scanner, so I had to hold the book open with some DVDs and try to take a photo instead. I apologize for how wonky this looks:

Next, there is a short "Opinion" section written by an anime reviewer, a picture of Evangelion Unit-01, a page with the new Seele logo, and then a chapter called "High Light" which has interviews with various staff members to talk about how the movie was made. This chapter starts with a two-page spread of screenshots showing some of Tokyo-3's weapons and moving buildings, followed by an interview with Tatsuya Tanaka about architecture design for the movie. After that is a two-page spread of screenshots of Unit-01, and then an interview with Ikuto Yamashita about mecha design. Even though most of the pictures in this chapter are screenshots from the movie, there are also some other types of art, such as pre-production sketches and storyboards. Oh, and check out this cool illustration from the Yamashita interview:

The rest of the chapter has interviews with Takeshi Honda (about the battle with Ramiel), Takeshi Takakura (about various equipment designs), okama (Central Dogma design), Shoichi Masuo (special effects), and Shinji Higuchi (Operation Yashima). By the way, this book was published in 2007. Sadly, Shoichi Masuo passed away in July of 2017. A book called Evangelion Irasutoshuu 2007-2017 has a hidden tribute to Masuo, which I described back in my sixty-fifth Evangelion book review.

Getting back to Entry File 1, the next chapter is called "Rebuild", and it contains many more interviews and pictures about the making of the movie. The people featured in this chapter are Tomoki Kyoda, Hiroshi Haraguchi, Susumu Fukushi, Hiroshi Katoh, Hidenori Matsubara, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, Daisuke Onitsuka, Hiroyasu Kobayashi, and Kazuya Tsurumaki. Once again many of the images are screenshots from the movie, however there are also some other types such as sketches, storyboards, CG work, and photos from Studio Khara. Take a look at this lovely sketch of Rei:

Afterwards is a short chapter called "Last Stage" with the subtitle "Kaworu Nagisa", and it has screenshots and dialogue from the movie's final scene, along with a two-page spread of Kaworu drawn by Atsushi Okuda. Here are screenshots from one of this chapter's pages:

The book finishes with a few pages of credits, plus Misato's words from the Next Time Preview at the very end of the movie.

Overall, Evangelion Shin Gekijouban: Jo - Entry File 1 is a nice book for fans of the Evangelion: 1.0 movie, however you probably won't get as much out of it if you can't read Japanese. Besides, if you're looking for screenshots and/or materials about the making of the movie, the Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone Complete Records Collection (which I covered back in my fifty-fourth Evangelion book review) is much more extensive, so you might prefer to get that instead. Or if you don't care about screenshots or "making of" pics and just want the original art from Entry File 1's two-page spreads, you can get Evangelion Irasutoshuu 2007-2017 for those and many other beautiful illustrations, although admittedly they will be smaller in size. (NOTE: The two "Dramatis Personae" pics are older, so they are in another book called Die Sterne Ver.2.0 which I discussed way, way back in my second Evangelion book review!)

If you do want to purchase Evangelion Shin Gekijouban: Jo - Entry File 1, it seems that new copies are currently no longer in stock, so try searching on a website that specializes in used Japanese books (such as Mandarake).

This is an extremely late entry for day 24, I know I said I'd be posting something soon when I made my post for the final day of Sheith Month but things got messed up. I got busy & at first I was going to do an oneshot but scrapped it because I felt I put to much trauma in it for an oneshot.(Context was that Keith use to be in a foster family that he thought would be his forever home until the dad died in a car crash & the mom went insane as she became very protective & possessive of him after losing her husband. Cops had to explain to Keith that she started sedating him so he'd be to tired & dazed to leave her which eventually lead to CPS & the cops taking him away from her when Keith stopped going to school. She even threatened to destroy what's left of Keith's soulmark because now that he was all she had left she wouldn't let even his soulmate take him.) I think it might have escalated to much & I didn't really have enough to work more on that backstory.(Like have Keith afraid of the idea of soulmates thanks to his foster mom & have Shiro help him overcome it) This was based off a Yuri on Ice fanfic about markings for soulmates This picture is meant to summarize it & give a better idea of what the soulmate mark looks like. I kind of copied off a pic from wiki for it, the soulmark is a constellation of Leo. The idea is that Allura & Keith are stuck alone in the castle for some reason, Allura thinks on what she's been told about soulmates by Lance(who doesn't have one but everyone jokes that he & Allura may as well be soulmates) because they made a comment on Keith panicking because he felt his soulmate be in distress around the time Keith was helping a sick Shiro. Allura then notices Keith's back is covered in scars when he's undressing from his paladin armor. Keith talks about how he was in an accident as a kid that lead to his back getting scarred enough that he could barely recognize his soulmate mark leading to him being devastated as he didn't think his soulmate would be able to recognize the marking either. Keith had gone years without seeing his marking & without being able to find his soulmate that he gave up on it. He also admits that he wonders what Shiro thinks as Keith can't help but feel something leading him toward Shiro. Allura feels a little bad for her part-Galra paladin as he's gone through a lot in his life. Shiro & the others eventually come back & Allura talks to Shiro about soulmate markings, I forget what I was thinking for this but eventually Shiro catches sight of Keith's marking. He traces over it & hugs Keith, it turns out that even with damage covering it up soulmates still recognize each others' marking. Shiro shows Keith his & Keith nearly cries as Shiro's helps him recognize his own damaged mark once again. I tried to do a colored sketch of Keith & Shiro's backs(I dunno if it was a good idea to use a screenshot for a color ref & then use an imaged I saved for a scar color ref) along side their soulmate mark which is kind of meant to be ironic since they drive robot lions. I'm not good at scars so it might look ridiculous, also not sure if Shiro had any other scars other than around his missing arm & on his nose. I finally finished the thing I wanted to make for a day I missed for Sheith Month. I have another idea for this day's theme also based on another Yuri on Ice but I'll just post it as a normal Sheith pic post instead of a Sheith Month post. Top 6 Spring 2020 Anime to Watch

I was going to make this a Top 10, but it got way too long, so I cut it to 6. (Also above pic is from BNA)

Anyway, these are the Top 6 Spring 2020 Anime that I personally think will be worth watching. For all of these included in the list, I have watched at least the first episode. But of course, this list will be very biased, because my beloved Studio Trigger finally has another show again.

I won’t be including sequels (but I’m watching Fruits Basket S2, Ascendance of a Bookworm S2, and I’m trying to catch up on Kaguya-sama and Tsugumomo)

Let’s start from Number 6. May contain vague spoilers for the first episodes of these shows. More below!

6. Gal to Kyouryuu

This one looks like trash. I know. I know, but give it a chance. Maybe all you’ll get out of it is its comedy and strangeness, and its wacky live action second half. But just let me tell you the best part of this show, and why it’s so high on my list.

First, a quick summary. A gyaru (gal) girl takes in a dinosaur that she found one day, and they spend their time just living life together. That’s it.

That is it, but I think there’s more to it than just that. This gal girl, Kaede, from what I can tell, has just been going through the motions in life. She felt bored and uninspired and unmotivated. Her life was just work, and whatever fun things she could find to fill up her free time.

But when she brings in the dinosaur, despite her many complaints, she still cares for him and thinks of him and is considerate towards him. And for her to have someone by her side, and looking to her as a companion to face life together, side by side, creates a little more fun and a little more motivation in her own life.

This isn’t a deep show or anything. I don’t think there’s some dark hidden message, unless you want to look at it that way. It’s a sweet little show about the relationship between two lost and lonely people, finding their way in life together. One of them just happens to be a cute dinosaur.

Which amazingly, no one seems to question. I think that’s great, because it just cuts out that whole obstacle of others coming to terms with the dinosaur’s existence, and goes straight to him as just an individual character, and his relationship with Kaede.

It’s just really sweet, I can’t say this enough. It might be a little subtle. But just watch out for the things that Kaede does for the dinosaur, like how she seriously thinks about what she can do to help him. I also think the dinosaur definitely helps Kaede let down her guard and be more relaxed about some things. Both their lives are just brighter with each other than without.

(Edit after seeing Episode 2, SPOILERS: Never mind about this not being deep or dark, the ending of Episode 2 has changed my mind!! Please watch it, and let’s discuss theories!!!)

5. Arte

If you’ve read any of my past essays, maybe you’ve found out by now that I live for the dynamic between really great and supportive partnerships. And maybe you’ve also found out by now that most of this list consists of said partnerships. Arte definitely has one too.

So Arte is about a noblewoman who wants to be an artist, but everyone is against that, because she’s a woman, and women at that time don’t become artists. And moreover, she’s a noble, and so she needs to be ladylike and get married so she can continue to live a comfy life.

Basically that’s the premise, and Arte goes about trying to find her path to becoming an artist. She eventually becomes the apprentice of someone we all know: Leonardo da Vinci.

If you like art, if you like history and historical figures (read: if you’re a Fate fan like me), or if you just like a cool and determined female MC, then this is for you. I would say this is comparable to Ascendance of a Bookworm, or the anime movie Miss Hokusai. It’ll probably have equal parts lighthearted comedy and darker seriousness, and plenty of coolness from Arte and Leo both.

4. Gleipnir

I read a good chunk of the manga a year or two before this came out, so I’ve been looking forward to this. The animation in this first episode was really good quality, and it’ll probably only get better from here. The story is basically, one day, our MC Shuichi suddenly gains powers to turn into a big stuffed animal suit. Everyone who has these powers to transform has entered into a big battle royale to the death to collect the most coins.

Shuichi just wants to live a normal life and get rid of this animal form, and Claire wants to find a certain someone (among other things). Shuichi doesn’t want to fight, doesn’t want to kill anyone — but he can’t do nothing because then he’d be killed. And he doesn’t even know yet why he was turned into this monster.

That’s where Claire comes in. She has a goal, but she doesn’t have powers like he does. She’d be killed instantly on her own, just as he would because of his hesitation. Just so you know, she gets it into her head that the best way for them both to live, and get what they both want, is for her to get inside his animal suit form, and control him from the inside.

They’d both die on their own, but together, they can survive.

I think the story is interesting and plenty mysterious. There’s a lot of good stuff to sink your teeth into. But like always, the core of the show, to me, is the dynamic between Shuichi and Claire, and how they both find purpose and motivation because of each other.

Also Shuichi’s VA is the same as Tanjirou. And Ikuto in Runway de Waratte. So that’s a plus.

3. Princess Connect! Re:Dive

So it might be easy to dismiss this as another fantasy adventure harem with the lackluster MC, but I’m going to argue for our mostly silent and robotic protagonist. We find out in the first episode when he wakes up that he lost his memory, so I would say that that’s the reason why he’s pretty emotionless. So as he interacts more with Kokkoro, and learns more about the world from her, he becomes more expressive.

I think the best example of this is his last line at the end of the first episode, which sounded a little more emotional and personal than any lines he’d said earlier.

On another note, the animation is top notch — way, way too excessively pretty and beautiful and detailed, but I ain’t complaining. The grass. The grass. Watch it, and you’ll see what I mean. And the lighting. The lighting.

The action animation and comedy both are pretty reminiscent of Konosuba. A certain character’s finishing move is pretty similar to Explosion. And like Konosuba, a lot of the appeal of this show will probably be the female characters, their wild personalities, and all the shenanigans they get into.

But also like Konosuba, there’s a small, hidden sweet side sprinkled throughout, in how their ragtag group finds friendship and companionship with each other, when they couldn’t find it elsewhere. If you look at it that way, I think this show can be sweet and deep in its own way.

2. Tower of God

This is a big one that I know lots of people have been looking forward to, as it’s an adaptation of a popular Webtoon. I haven’t read the webtoon yet, but I will eventually. I’ll just say that first, the art and animation here is really, really good. In particular, the scenery and background art is amazing, and really creates the whole atmosphere. A single change in background can change the mood in a second. You’ll see what I mean immediately in the first scene with the big door. Or a little later on with the blood splatter.

The animation of the movement in action scenes is smooth and fluid, no problems there. The art style may take some time to get used to for some people who may not like it, but it’s personally just the kind I like. Honestly it reminds me of a Shaft work. So if you like the Monogatari series, the use of art style and background art here gives a similar vibe, or at least I think so.

As for the story, it starts with Bam getting separated from Rachel, and he starts his journey to climb a tower so he can meet her again. We get pretty much no reason for why she left yet, but I think we’re in for something really good with this story.

(I’m planning on making a separate analysis essay entirely on a certain scene in the first episode, so look forward to that.)

1. BNA

Brand New Animal. Trigger’s latest work, the last few being SSSS Gridman and Darling in the Franxx, and their first movie, Promare. I am a huge Trigger fan, and I’ve been excited for this one for a while.

Our MC, Michiru, is a human, but she suddenly gets turned into a tanuki person. She seeks refuge in Anima City, because (surprise!) the humans don’t like the animal people. But not everything is as it seems in Anima City, and she teams up with the wolf person, Ogami Shiro, to find answers — thus getting caught up in something way bigger and stranger than she ever expected.

First off, if you’ve been missing the crazy and cartoonish animation from Trigger’s earlier stuff, then you’re in for a treat. This has an undeniable Kill la Kill vibe, but with Promare’s amazing popping colors and backgrounds.

If you want to say it’s another animal show, like Beastars and Zootopia, go ahead. Let’s just get that out of the way.

Moving on, Michiru escapes to Anima City, expecting it to be a place where all the animal people can live freely and be themselves. But it turned out to be a free-for-all, strongest wins type of society, where animal people are quick to betray their own kind for their own personal gain. And even side with the humans who discriminated them in the first place.

Michiru’s character will probably be a hit or miss for most people. Some might find her annoying, others charming and endearing. I like her, as I tend to like these types of characters.

But I think what’s great, is that she gets challenged. Her ideas and beliefs about both the animal people and humans are put to the test, and her suddenly becoming an animal person herself means that she’s in a unique position of being able to understand both sides. But she’s also still an outsider, and she finds that maybe neither side was really quite like what she once believed. And so, her place in either side of society will come into question for her. There’s a lot to dig into here, and I’ll probably make separate posts for BNA alone later on.

If you like Trigger, watch it. It’s probably more of a mix between Gridman and Promare than it is Kill la Kill, despite sharing many animation similarities (even a certain sports match that’s basically torn right out of Kill la Kill). If you want something that’s a little more different and subtle and intriguing than their usual works, then this is for you. If you liked Beastars, give this one a try too.
