2020: A Year in Thirst

In 1985, Gabriel Garcia Marquez gave the world Love in the Time of Cholera.  In 2020 (er, I guess it’s now 2021), I give to you, Thirst in the Time of Covid-19 or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Embrace the Thirst, a brief recap of all the dramas I watched in 2020 and whether such dramas made yours truly parched..  

The list contains dramas that premiered in 2020, but also dramas from previous years.  If I watched it or attempted to watch it in 2020, it’s on the list.  

EDIT: Ok, I’m going to have to do this in multiple parts because apparently I watched more dramas in 2020 than I remembered and talking about them all in one post would just be too long.

This also serves as a sort of greeting to all the people who recently followed me.  I don’t know how or why, but thank you for being interested in my thirst, and also so sorry for everything you have/will witness here!  I started this side blog last December 2019 as a place to dump all my fangirl feels and thirst with unbridled abandon and let’s just say, the thirst REALLY ramped up in 2020 during quarantine and all the political chaos/uncertainty.  The state of the world may be uncertain, but my thirst will always be a comforting constant!  LOL. If you want to thirst or fangirl/boy together, I’m all ears.

Anyway, let’s start with the drama that was partially the inspiration for this list. 

1. The Wolf

Brief Summary: Sweet hot boy raised in the wilderness/by wolves meets sweet beautiful girl and they fall in love.  Shitty evil people do shitty evil things to them to cause a misunderstanding and they are separated for years.  Sweet hot boy is given the “Sexy Bloody Tormented Killer Makeover” TM and turns into a VERY VERY BAD HOT Wolf Man after being tortured/brainwashed by an evil asshole king who “adopted” him.  Bad Hot Wolf Man reunites with sweet beautiful girl but because of third party machinations in the past, he thinks that she betrayed him so he is suuuuuuch an ass to her (while still maintaining hotness).  But even beneath the asshattery (and sexy jerky smirks), he can’t help his love for her and it’s just *chefs kiss*. The angst, the pining, the mutual sacrifice for each other, the torment of wanting to be together but not being able to be together because of external forces/circustances, oh I am getting in a tizzy just thinking about it.  I won’t reveal anymore so as not to spoil the drama, but just know the ending may destroy you.

Is she thirsty? Am I thirsty? AM I THIRSTY?  Oh honey, if you don’t know the answer to that, then you must either be new here or you haven’t been paying attention to any of my posts in the past few weeks.  Look, from the first moment the camera panned to Darren Wang’s very well-defined and tan chest and windswept hair, all semblance of shame and dignity I ever tried to feign on this tumblr was immediately thrown out the window.  The feelings that he inspired within me were purely primal.  My cavewoman ancestor from millennia ago stopped gathering food in the harsh wilderness for a brief second to transmigrate into my body and go “me want big strong man!”

I mean, below is literally our introduction to Wolf Boy.  Am I supposed to just witness this and not feel anything?  The director knew what he/she was doing.  Anybody who worked on the drama who says they didn’t intend to exploit Darren Wang’s assets is a BOLD FACED LIAR. And this isn’t even Wolf boy in his hottest form.

Damn, your girl needs a moment here.  When Wolf Boy turns into Bad Hot Wolf Man, wheeeeewww.  The things that came out of my mouth and the thoughts that popped up into my head.

Honestly, just check out The Wolf tag on @dangermousie​ tumblr and you won’t be disappointed.  Prepare to become obsessed, horny, and heartbroken.

Would I watch it minus the thirst traps? Have you ever thirsted so much that you couldn’t separate what reaction was hormonal and what was objective?  Like the guy is so hot to you that when your friends ask you what do you like about him, the first 10 things you can think of are “he’s hot!” and then you try to remind yourself that you’re not a shallow person who actually cares about things other than looks but at the same time you can’t for the life of you think of a non-hot based trait that you like about the guy  Yeah, that’s what happened here so sorry, I can’t give you an objective opinion.  It’s not that there’s nothing objectively good about The Wolf, it’s just that my judgment is too clouded by Darren Wang’s abs and big hands.  But from what I can tell by other people’s posts, even if you didn’t thirst for Darren Wang (Are you made of stone?  But also, can you please teach me your magic so I can go back to being a semi-functional working woman?), The Wolf is still a very enjoyable drama with its own non-Darren Wang related merits.

2. My Beautiful Bride

Brief Summary: A drama about a strait-laced banker who wears a dorky backpack and rides a bicycle everywhere while wearing the dorkiest looking helmet ever and his beautiful bride-to-be whom he is hopelessly devoted to.  This being a kdrama, and an OCN drama at that, things aren’t all what they appear to be.  Yes, you read that right, an OCN. ROMANCE. DRAMA.  Turns out the beautiful bride-to-be has a dangerous past that soon comes back to haunt her and she mysteriously disappears one day from strait-laced banker’s life in the typical kdrama way to protect him.  Part of the reason she leaves him is also because she doesn’t want him to know about her past because she doesn’t think she’s good enough for him.  Little does she know, he knows everything about her past and accepts it all.  The only reason why he doesn’t bring it up is because he knows she doesn’t want him to know about that part of herself and he loves her so much he’s willing to do anything to make her happy.  But also, another thing she doesn’t know is that underneath that boring but perfectly ironed suit, is a finely chiseled, super efficient fighting machine who did his mandatory military service in the special forces.  He is like the terminator meets Liam Neeson’s character in Taken.  He has a very particular set of skills and will stop at nothing to get his bride back.

Prior to The Wolf, My Beautiful Bride was probably the most thirst-inducing drama I watched in 2020.

I don’t’ know how Joo Young saw that body and never questioned whether he really was just a banker.  The writers of the drama must be super heterosexual men who are blind because so many of the characters in the drama question why someone as beautiful as Joo Young would ever want to be with someone like the banker. Um..Um...aside from the fact that he is financially well off, treats her well, is loving and respectful of her, and prioritizes her over everything else, JUST LOOK AT HIM.  I was so thirsty for Kim Mu Yeol in this role that I would accidentally tag this drama as My Beautiful Banker sometimes.  The banker was on a relentless one-man mission to take back his bride and turn me on in the process and ooooooh boy was he successful on both fronts.  He is seriously sex on legs every time he beats up a baddie in his quest to find answers about Joo Young’s whereabouts.

Would I watch it minus the thirst traps?  I binged the first six episodes of this drama in one afternoon partly because of my thirst, but also partly because it’s a very well made crime-action-gangster drama.  This is an OCN drama so you can expect a competently made production with well choreographed/bloody action scenes and a solid script.

3. Scarlet Heart Ryeo / Moon Lovers

Brief Summary: IU plays Hae Soo, a modern woman who is somehow transported back in time to the Goryeo period.  There, she gets entangled with a group of royal princes.  Her two main love interests are Wang So (played by Lee Jun Ki) and Wang Wook (played by Kang Ha Neul).  The princes vie for the throne and some of them for Hae Soo’s affection.  Lee Jun Ki does what he does best, which is play a sexy tortured deadly man who looks way too good with blood splattered on his face.  Kang Ha Neul is the seemingly kind prince/daddy long legs character who turns out to be not so kind or daddy long leggy.  Hae Soo is...well IU did the best she could with what she was given (which was a hot inconsistent mess).

Is she thirsty? Scarlet Heart Ryeo is like the honeypot of thirst traps.  It’s essentially a reverse harem set up with a prince for everyone.

Like them young and cute?  Then try the 10th prince, Wang Eun.

Want them big, tall, and kinda dumb?  Here’s the 14th prince Wang Jung for ya.

Want an evil bastard with an affinity for guyliner?  Try out 3rd prince Wang Yo.

Tall, slender, and scholarly? 13th prince Baek-ah will fill your needs.

Is a kind/gentle man who will ultimately disappoint you because he doesn’t show up when you need him most more your speed?  Well, let me introduce you to 8th prince, Wang Wook.

Kinda scary but oh so hot and with a ton of baggage?  We’re talking, I overpacked and brought 10 overstuffed large suitcases levels of baggage. 4th prince Wang So is the guy for you.

And if you prefer someone with no personality, presence, or memorable traits, I got a two-for-one deal for you in the crown prince Wang Mu and 9th prince Wang Won.

Would I watch it minus the thirst traps?  There is political intrigue, scheming, romance, fluffy hijinks (my least favorite parts of the drama), angst, beautiful costumes, and pretty decent fight scenes.  Scarlet Heart Ryeo is a pretty solid fusion/fantasy sageuk mostly thanks to Lee Jun Ki.  The only person who has ever carried a larger load on his back is Atlas.  I’m not saying all the other actors are horrendous. It’s just very clear that the one elevating the material beyond the inconsistencies/messiness/elementary politics of the script is Lee Jun Ki.  Your enjoyment level of the drama will likely increase if you are a fan of any of the main actors.

Sorry it took a little bit (´ω｀。) It’s my first time working with these characters so I wanted to give it my absolute best

I’m setting this up as individual movie nights so that each character can get the spotlight for a while; I hope that’s ok!  Also, a lot of them somehow ended up in a context of it being the first time you’d hung out one on one lol

Simeon:

It feels like Simeon spends just about all of his time with Luke and Solomon, while you spend just about all of yours with the brothers.  So, you decide to have a movie night to finally spend some time together without having to divide your attention.  Purgatory Hall is the obvious choice of location, since its residents are much more ready to leave you alone when asked.

This angel is a traditional kind of guy, as angels tend to be, so popcorn is the only snack idea that comes to mind.  Traditional doesn’t mean close-minded, though, so he’s more than willing to try out any snacks you bring along.  Actually, he encourages you to bring a bunch of snacks to try out together!  You can have a taste test while you watch the movies!

Simeon likes Hallmark movie-type movies a lot, mainly because they demand little emotional investment.  Movies like horror don’t scare him, but they do stress him out because he wants all the protagonists to get their happy ending!  Another benefit of Hallmark movies is that it’s fun to try to guess exactly what will happen, since they can be so predictable.

Of course, he doesn’t want to monopolize your movie lineup, so if there’s something you want to see he’s all for it.  If you want to go for something more thrilling, he’ll power through it like a champ, but you can see him visibly cringing at some points.

Simeon is lowkey a movie cuddler, but like in a way that still respects your personal space bubble.  He won’t spend the film with you in his arms or anything, but the entire couch is fair game.

Simeon apparently likes to talk during movies–he doesn’t mean to, but the thoughts kind of just come out.  He’s brutally honest about what he’s thinking, so if you’re down with it, talking about and roasting the movie as it’s happening is a load of fun.  “I don’t know MC, I don’t think this guy’s all that great either?  Sure maybe he isn’t completely ignoring her, but look, he obviously has commitment issues; at least her ex was just busy all the time.  Look, Mr. Lone Wolf’s beard is uneven.  Why does she want a man who wants to look rugged but can’t get it right?”

Simeon also will accidentally spoil any movie he’s already seen like this, so you’re best off watching films that are new to both of you.

He knew that you were a nice and fun person, but honestly he’s kind of taken aback by how good you are to be around.  Since the only human he’s usually around is Solomon, talking to one and not feeling like you need to second-guess everything you’re told is a new and welcome feeling.

Before you split for the night, he asks if you’d like to do something like this again.  As an angel, there’s a lot that he hasn’t experienced–a lot of food, a lot of activities, a lot of media–and you’re someone that he feels like he would be comfortable trying new things with.  You can expect lots of texts like, “Hello!  I hope you’re doing wellヾ(＾-＾)ノ Are you free tomorrow?”

Luke:

You probably decide to have a movie night after Luke ends up spending way longer than he expected to in the kitchen at the House of Lamentation.  On the condition that absolutely no demons are to join you two!  Ok maybe Beel and Levi are ok but absolutely no one else!  After a call to Simeon explaining that he isn’t coming back to Purgatory Hall tonight you guys are good to go.

He always brings baked goods when he comes over, plus whatever he was working on in the kitchen, so you’re more than covered!  The majority of it is things like cookies and fudge bark.  They’re easy snacks to grab a handful of.

Luke tries to insist that he wants to watch a movie with lots of violence or a horror film, or any other kind of movie that teenagers sneak into.  He’s doing it because he’s so frustrated with everyone calling him a kid when he’s centuries older than a human will ever be, stop making fun of him!!  For his sake and yours, you should tell him that you don’t want to watch that sort of movie, because if you let him get away with it he’ll get too freaked out in the first 20 minutes.

Most likely you’ll end up having a Disney marathon.  They’re so fun, and since the Celestial Realm is pretty isolated when it comes to cultural exchange, he’s only seen a couple, so you can show him your favorites!  Also, he’s not crying.  No, you saw that wrong.

He starts off on the other side of the couch, one again trying to be mature and shit, but that won’t last long.  Anyone who sees you huddled together like that will be punched in the gut with the sheer level of sibling energy y’all are radiating.  Lucifer almost doesn’t want to mock him.  Almost.

That thing where immediately after consuming a piece of media, you imagine yourself as part of that universe?  Luke loves to talk about that sort of thing.  “If I lived there, I’d have given Gaston a piece of my mind!”  “Ok but if I was a piece of furniture what do you think I’d be?  I can totally see you being a…”

“I think you’d be the footstool that acts like a dog, Luke.”  “Hey, Lucifer, you weren’t invited to our party!!”

You might (will) have to fend off a few nosy demon brothers to protect your demon-free movie lair.  Luke swears that next time you have to come over to Purgatory Hall, but he’s having way more fun here than he’s willing to admit.

He also learns that most of the brothers will listen to you without complaint.  He will definitely keep this in mind.

This kid angel has so much energy, how is he still awake after five movies?  You absolutely have to establish a bedtime because he literally will not go to bed until you do.

Solomon:

It’s quite rare for you to have a break from the seven avatars of attention hogging, so if you’re going to have a movie night, Purgatory Hall may as well be a godsend.

You may want to be careful about getting there, because if Asmo catches wind that you and Solomon are having a movie night without him, he’s going to show up unannounced and then refuse to leave.  Solomon can come pick you up if you need.  Just, he’ll be waiting a block away so Asmo can’t catch up.

Solomon is a “dinner and a show” kinda guy.  He will offer to make dinner.  Do not let him do this.  Either make it yourself or order takeout.

You’ll pretty easily agree on alternating who chooses the movie.  You get the first, he gets the second, you get the third, etc.  Definitely isn’t letting you choose first to lure you into a false sense of security about the DVD in his hand, what made you think that?

Solomon is the kind of person to lie about what sort of movie he’s put in.  “Solomon what is this supposed to be?”  “Oh, don’t worry about it.”  It’s gonna be a weird movie.  You just have to wait and see.

He is going to rip into your movie choices.  He liked how they worked with this, and that was impressive, but these bits?  Did they think they could get away with that?  What was the budget?  Rest assured, though, he expects you to do the same for him.  In fact, he’ll be quite disappointed if you don’t.

He prefers a setup on his bed rather than on the couch.  He’s also one of the ones who keeps to himself in terms of personal space, although that’s not to say that he isn’t relaxed.  Some might say he’s too relaxed, but that’s just who he is: too relaxed in any situation.  On the surface, at least.

As the only humans in the Devildom, some of the night is probably spent reminiscing on how different things tend to be here.  Solomon does feel bad that you in particular have had to make so many changes to your life and habits with no warning.  He has his magic to rely on, so he’s glad you have your reputation of “the human that made a pact with the student council” to keep demons from messing with you.

If you want, he’s happy to let you sleep over so that you don’t have to explain why you’re coming home so late.  He also encourages you to not say anything to your dorm mates.  Wouldn’t it be fun to make them wonder?  They’re always breathing down your neck, aren’t they?  Make them squirm a little bit.  You’re going to get a scolding for sneaking out regardless.  It’s incredibly cruel; you know they worry sick about you more than is called for.  Will you play along?  That’s up to you.  I advise you not to.

Like Simeon felt like he needed to second-guess everything around a bunch of demons and Solomon, Solomon sometimes feels like he needs to keep himself guarded around a bunch of demons and two literal angels.  You, however, are a human.  You have common ground, and Solomon can see how your vulnerability here translates into strength.  He’s not quite ready to admit it but, your ability to survive on character and not power is inspiring to him.  Shortly before you go home/to sleep, he mentions something about himself, and for once it seems like he’s being honest.

Barbatos:

You have the movie night at the House of Lamentation, under Lucifer’s promise that he’d keep everyone else busy.  It’s Barbatos’ first day off in 325 years, and he doesn’t want to take any chances of Diavolo forgetting that fact and giving him an order.

It may come as a surprise, but Barbatos wants nothing more than to order a pizza.  If he managed to get enough time off to have a movie night with you, he doesn’t want to have to think about preparing food.  A single night where he can just hang out and eat less than perfectly prepared cuisine is exactly what he needs to unwind.

Out of habit, he insists that whatever you want to watch is fine.  If you remind him that this is just as much for him as it is for you, he’ll suggest you look up what new psychological thrillers are trending.  Whenever a scary scene is playing on the screen, there’s the tiniest smile gracing his face the whole time.  It’s a little disconcerting, but something tells you that you shouldn’t bring it up.

If you do bring it up against all better judgement, though, he’ll explain that the villain in the film is being so messy.  Given the circumstances, it’d be better for him to do this or that.

“Don’t ask how I know all of this.  I’m just saying, if you find yourself with a body to dispose of, alive or not, you know who to call.”

Time spent with an off-duty Barbatos grows more relaxed as the night progresses.  You split the sofa 50/50, and over time you can see his posture relax from stiff and straight to leaning against the arm with his feet up.

Oh, yes, he’s also brought along a nice bottle of wine to share.  He made sure to get something that should affect demons and humans equally, of course.  If he’s going to get inebriated, you’re going down with him.

Turns out, working for the Demon Prince for all eternity gives you a few grievances.  Also turns out that the Demon Prince’s butler becomes quite loose lipped and downright snarky when he’s had enough to drink.  “‘Which flavor do you think Lucifer would like best?’  I don’t know, My Lord, might I suggest you ask him yourself?  No, no, I hear you laughing, MC!  This happens every time!”

There’s still a movie playing, but why would you watch a movie when Diavolo’s butler is such a gossip?  You definitely know things you shouldn’t by the time the night is over, but you swear an oath of secrecy.  And, although he regrets how liberal he was with his stories the next day, it does feel nice to have some of that off his chest.

And, well, he’s already gone this far, so he hopes you aren’t too surprised when you receive a text from him a week later: “Ok SO.”

Diavolo:

You guys decide to do the movie night at the palace, mainly to avoid Lucifer.  Diavolo wants to get to know you better, and he knows that if Lucifer is around he’ll end up making you the third-wheel.

Barbatos is going to be around, so Diavolo leaves it up to you whether you want to make it a party of three.  (Barbatos is still in on-duty mode, of course, so his time here is much less relaxed than in his solo scenario.)

Diavolo’s read about movie nights in Youthful Fun 101, and he wants to try out the whole snack list.  Popcorn, pizza rolls, sodas, you name it, he’s got mountains of it.

If you suggest also making ice cream sundaes, he’ll be the happiest demon in the entire Devildom.  It seems that the esteemed Demon Prince really loves chocolate sauce.

Really really wants to watch your favorite movie.  What sort of Devildom host would he be if he didn’t get to understand the Human World from his guest’s perspective?  Whether it’s something like Gone with the Wind or something like Barbie in a Mermaid Tale 2, he’s enthralled.  So this is Human World cinema!  There’s something so imaginative about it, even in the driest moments!

After your favorite, he’s got a checklist of iconic movies to get under his belt.  Not all of them end up holding your attention, and you develop a voting system–after the first 15 minutes, you hold a vote on whether to keep the movie going or to move on.  Since there’s only two of you, only one of you needs to like the movie to keep it going, so you give yourselves one immediate veto each.

Diavolo uses his veto on the first movie he wasn’t super into, and you have to keep reminding him that there’s no secret second veto that he can use.  Cut him some slack, this level of democracy is unfamiliar to the future Demon King.  He does end up really liking some of the movies he tried to avoid, so he learns to chill pretty quickly.

Also insists on watching the movies in a massive blanket fort.  He’s not a movie cuddler, per se, but he is an emotional movie watcher, so you can expect him to grab your arm during an especially sweet or sad scene.

You’re going to have to clarify what’s realistic and what isn’t sometimes.  No, that’s not a real animal.  Yes, that event really happened.  That may or may not be true, we aren’t sure.  Diavolo please this is a conspiracy theory.

If you thought that this wouldn’t end up in a sleepover, I don’t know what to tell you.  Maybe you just tried to watch way too many movies and passed out in the fort.  Maybe you tried to call it quits and then he gave you big puppy dog eyes until you agreed to have a slumber party.

Side note, but Lucifer is still recovering from seeing Diavolo’s car appear unannounced at the House of Lamentation and then being told that it’s actually here to pick you up and that he absolutely can’t come along.  Has he been replaced?

See you at the Crossroads, Crossroads, Crossroads

DISCLAIMER: I know Crossroads (dir. Tamra Davis, 2002) is iconic and Britney is an icon, and while I can appreciate its place in pop culture, I thought it would be interesting to analyse, and also to see what is says about American attitudes in the early 2000s. 

Now even though this is a fictional story with fictional characters, Lucy Wagner (played by Miss Spears) is clearly meant to represent Britney herself. First we have to look back to the hazy days of 2002, when Britney had sexed up her image with the release of her third album, Britney (2001), featuring classics such as, “I’m a Slave 4 U”, “Overprotected”, and “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman”. Despite its success, a lot of the public and media were unhappy with her pull from the ‘virginal, teen-idol’ image she originally embodied. She famously claimed at the start of her career that she wished to remain a virgin until marriage, and boy, was she ever allowed to forget it. Subsequently, she was constantly hounded by the press to see whether there was any update on this front, and if not it meant people could continue their creepy Lolita-esque fetishisation of her. I suppose this film was Britney’s way of breaking free, and telling the world that she was not that girl in the school uniform anymore, but becoming a young woman in her own right (hence the song title) without being too direct and completely alienating her audience.

To briefly summarise the plot, Lucy (Britney), Kit (Zoe Saldana) and Mimi (Taryn Manning), are three former best friends who now move around in completely different social circles, and are on the verge of graduating high school. As children they buried a chest which featured a treasured belonging from each of them, with the promise that they would meet up and re-claim these tokens after graduation. When the time comes, they begrudgingly agree to meet up once more and do what they promised, with the nostalgia fuelled by re-claiming these belongings inspiring Kit and Lucy to join Mimi (and some random guy) on a road trip to California. Mimi wanted to go to an audition in L.A, Kit wished to go to visit her fiancé, and Lucy wished to be dropped off in Arizona to meet her mother, who walked out on her family when she was young. The random guy who gives them a ride is Ben (Anson Mount), who later becomes a love interest to Lucy, and who she eventually loses her virginity to. As expected the girls have their ups and downs, but ultimately bond becoming closer than ever by the end of their trip, realising how important their friendship is. There are other themes and side storylines included, but more on that later.

You simply cannot watch Crossroads today without appreciating how of its time it is, the 2000s fashion trends, the clichéd high school dynamics, and of course, prime Britney. The three girls are American high school caricatures of sort, Kit is the bitchy but beautiful Queen Bee, Mimi is the edgy bad girl, who is also 5 months pregnant, and Lucy is the sweet, nerdy girl that most of the boys do not notice (yeah right Brit). Lucy’s father (played by Dan Aykroyd, which was a choice) is the stereotypical firm but loving single-dad who works a blue-collar job as a mechanic and has no time for 'anybody's nonsense’. I also enjoyed how Britney possessed the knowledge of a professional mechanic simply through her father being one, pretty standard teen movie logic of course. The girls jamming along to N*SYNC’s “Bye, Bye, Bye” in the car was pretty on the nose too, especially as Britney was still dating Justin Timberlake during this period, but ultimately this is what makes the movie so fun and nostalgic.  

In spite of this, I cannot deny there were certain elements of the film that rubbed me the wrong way. Mimi reveals that she became pregnant through the result of rape by a man who took advantage of her when she was drunk, which in itself I believe was a very brave and progressive plot line to include in the film, and the scene itself was heartbreaking and very well done. What I thought was ridiculous was the fact that this was apparently the first and only time Mimi had been drunk, and of course she had to get punished for it, resulting in her rape and pregnancy, a questionable lesson to teach young girls I think. It is a not so subtle way of saying that, girls partying = bad, I am not denying that safety concerns surrounding partying exist, but there were other ways they could go about it. Of course the question of abortion never even arose within the film as that would be too controversial, the closest we got to her giving up her baby was adoption, and she did not even want to do that. The worrying fact is, is that Mimi being raped is less controversial and more digestible than the concept of abortion, which in my opinion, are some very backwards and conservative priorities to preach. Ultimately as the baby was a product of rape, and Mimi was a teenager, she was never going to be able to keep it in teen movie world, and I was waiting to see how she would lose it. Whilst fleeing a confrontation from her rapist (who turned out to be Kit’s fiancé in a shocking twist of events) she trips down a block of stairs, resulting in her admittance to hospital and miscarries. Whilst still under care, she confides to Lucy that she “decided to keep her” baby before the accident, solidifying the film’s pro-life stance and the idea that she was conforming to motherhood. Everything concerning Mimi’s situation is completely violent and horrific, and to be honest, pretty downright cruel to her character, but ultimately this was still seen as a more acceptable option to abortion. I think this period of time represented a more Conservative America, with post- 911 sentiment resulting in more traditional, Christian values being re-introduced. Even though this film may seem somewhat boundary pushing initially (when dealing with topics such as rape and sex), its whole direction and morals are drenched in Conservatism, which are quite prominent tropes in the American media. 

If I had to do a rundown of the three most ridiculous parts of the movie it would be:

1. Ben having a mini fit because the girls kindly decide to drive his car when he falls asleep at the petrol station. He makes them pull over and starts shouting at some rocks, proclaiming how his car is “the only thing that hasn’t been taken over by chicks”, one of the most fragile things I have ever heard, and one of the most unwarranted reactions ever. 

2. When Lucy’s father confronts her about running away from home, going on a road trip across the country with basically no communication, no money, and with a random stranger, all she has to do is say ‘sorry’ and he forgives her immediately, saying “you made a mistake, everyone makes mistakes, you’re forgiven”. Yes he literally says “you’re forgiven”, a shockingly quick resolution and not the greatest writing in the world.

3. The most cringe-inducing part of the film would be the climactic romance scene between Ben and Lucy. In a heartwarming moment Lucy reads Ben a very personal poem she wrote, which ends up being the lyrics to the song “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman” in spoken word form. It is pretty difficult to take seriously, but then again the whole film is difficult to watch if you take it too seriously.  

On a more positive note, I thought Lucy losing her virginity was pretty tastefully done. I mean, it was a fairly standard teen movie scene, but I liked how it was not with some random guy who she had met 30 minutes earlier, or with some ex-boyfriend who she was secretly still harbouring feelings for. She lost it to some guy who she met on a road trip who she gradually developed a crush on, sure they were probably not going to get married and be together forever, but that is standard teenage life. I also appreciated how her deadbeat mum who ran out of the family when Lucy was young (played by Kim Cattrall), remained her deadbeat mum. There was no magical reunion, no moment of enlightenment, her mum was just weak and undeserving of Lucy’s love, which in itself is a difficult pill to swallow. In a way, I thought this was even more progressive than the inclusion of rape, teen media usually preaches Conservative values and the glorification of the nuclear family to its audience. Lucy attempted to reunite her nuclear family, but the film dismissed this notion, and she learnt that the family she already had: her, her father, and her friends, were just as much a family without a mother figure. 

All in all, yeah the film is far from perfect, it was never going to be a an Oscar contender, though I doubt that it was ever its intention. Sometimes a silly fun movie is just a silly fun movie. Britney proves her star power once again, and I was very impressed by her acting, going so far to say that she was the best part of the film. I cannot deny that watching the film makes me feel a ping of sadness, especially as we know what happened to her a few years later, but this film helps keep her legacy alive, and as someone who grew up idolising her, seeing happy Britney will have a special place in my heart.

thom- i hate to start this off with a jotakak-themed song because i know some people Despise jk. i’m sorry for y’all who do, but ahh this song has been stuck in my head for days now! :’( In terms of the SDA, i always think of this song as like…jotaro’s bittersweet journey w his feelings for kak. it’s something about the like, ghostly windchimes in the beginning, the phone buzzing in the bg, and the “please don’t run away”s man, ahhh. I listen to this song a lot when brainstorming him coming to accept that friendship is as far as he and kak go. However,“ The pitter patter gave a rather rinse and lather feeling/ As opposed to shitty attitudes that made me bitter after laughter/ And I dearly regretted it” really makes me think of pt. 4 jotaro in any context. We only see the end result of his development from SDC, but like hhh… do you think he regrets being so gruff? I think of that 1 fanart where he’s looking at the group picture + hoping they knew he wasn’t annoyed by them (or something along those lines, i forget the exact line…ahh)

something’s missing- So, ofc not all parts of this song apply.. and truthfully, I listen to this song while thinking of the immediate period after the crusade in the SDA and how the crusaders are all left with this hole in them (..@kakyoin literally.. i’m sorry i had to. also, abdul is the hole). Out of all of them, though, I always think of Jotaro the most w this song- “My dad asks, ‘Were you okay out where you were stranded?’ How do I tell him that I wasn’t just okay… I was so much better?” LIKE DAMN THAT IS ONE (1) KUJO JOTARO… :( i think he comes back from the crusade and just feels.. severely misplaced. Going back to Japan and the girls following him to school every morning feels so alien to him.

tempest rhapsody- this song is just… *chef kiss* It makes me think of like. star platinum’s first manifestation, and of the emotions one would feel during a 50-day crusade to a place you’ve never been before, where you run the risk of death at least once a week…how would it feel to know if you got seriously injured in a fight, there would be a very real possibility that your *cough* dearly beloved *cough* mother could die? this song is my answer to that question

only in sleep- another choir song! i cannot help myself. This one is more for canon Jotaro. I’ve read a few fics about the universe reset where he’s reunited with the other crusaders one last time before everything becomes nil, and…..augh. “The years had not sharpened their smooth round faces, I met their eyes and found them mild — Do they, too, dream of me, I wonder, And for them am I too a child?“ is imo such a jotaro 4 am deliberation

softly- THIS. this was the Original jotakak song, no offense thom. i used to listen to this song on REPEAT while reading nessun dorma, ahhh. so much of the sda jotakak dynamic is shaped from that fic and this song, hghshg. Anyhow, now that I’ve worked on the development of their relationship in the sda, this song is most definitely a song for the jotaro who unknowingly pines in 3rd year and then comes to realize that ah…these are Emotions during uni. during their third year, jotaro and kakyoin do a ton of self-exploration, and spend more than one night floating in the pitch black void of the ocean talking about what they’re going to do after graduation with only the stars to accompany them. they lose this when jotaro goes to florida for uni + kakyoin paris, but they make up for it by calling each other all the time, so “Touch you softly I call you up late at night” made this song an instant hit in my book ghshghw. I adore this song, through and through. ;u;

post-published honorable mention bc i rediscovered him while i was workin on polnareff’s playlist!! DOLLY ZOOM is another really good song for pining jotaro. in the sda, he feels really Horrible about having a crush on kakyoin for a long time because he and his family (that is phrased weird, i am sorry) are the entire reason kakyoin got a hole punched right through his abdomen and spine. they’re the entire reason kakyoin spent months learning how to walk and use his legs again. he doesn’t do anything except bury his feelings because, to him, it’d be Really selfish to do otherwise. i listened to dolly zoom nonstop when i started writing Jotaro’s Decade-Long Yearn because it captures the guilt really well, ahh.

Kakyoin (it is 1:24 am as i’m starting this… let’s see how long i agonize over this part lmao)

ultraviolence- ahh, ze Mindworm Song. I really despise diokak and the fact that he had to spend like…3-4 months with the mindworm just chilling in his brain, but I can’t ignore the fact that he latched onto dio’s friendship and was initially elated to have that whole thing happen. It haunts Kakyoin in canon, and it Most Definitely haunts him in the SDA, and i think he and jotaro have a lot of conversations about how and why and what that whole experience was like. I always end up coming back to this song when brainstorming this year in the au. The beginning just sounds so lonely, and the background choir/ voices really give me the heebie jeebies. Then, there’s the build-up to the beat drop, which really make me think of like. what being mindwormed could feel like? And how it must feel to be so lost in that sauce that you become a passenger in your own mind, lost to the whim of one super manipulative vampire, augh. “You give me love, you know you give me love with your ultraviolet rays” ties into a few of FKA Twigs’ other songs where she sings about not being enough and really obsessively deriving love from someone whose attention is ultimately really harmful and unhealthy, and I think about that and Kakyoin a lot. :(

sound and color- so truthfully, this is my go-to song for any character that dies/almost dies and comes back, or goes through a Huge Life Change. kakyoin fits both of these bills to a T! this song makes me think of getting used to being around such a rowdy but tight-knit group of people who genuinely care about you All Day Long after spending your entire life in isolation. I always think of like, a happiness montage when the second half of this song comes around, and the montage i daydream about for kak during that section is *chef kiss* Sound + Color is like one of the best songs ever, and it’d be a crime to not have a kak setting for it. 

first love/late spring- fellas, here’s the kakyoin equivalent to jotaro’s softly. this song was IT, back when the sergio-divergent au and the “All the Crusaders Live” au were two separate things. back then, kakyoin and jotaro’s realization that oh, fuck, they really meant the entire world to each other happened much earlier in the plot. Looking back on that now makes me squint, but I do think that this song is still really fitting for kakyoin exploring those feelings- friendship is one thing, but romance is something entirely different and a lot more intimate. i think it’s a tug-of-war for him, between wanting to jump in to those feelings and wanting to run far far away from them because he doesn’t want to be wrong and ruin their friendship. good times in the kak hole

last words of a shooting star- I really love the bastard fucker side of kakyoin that is explored and celebrated in our fanon, but I can never shake the fact that some of his last thoughts were of his parents (and i think he was sorry for making them worry? which… baby…) and that his polite, “outwardly anxious” presentation was this big facade for like.. the Deep and Soul-Wrenching loneliness he felt because he was a stand user? The first stanza and “They’ll never know how I’d stared at the dark in that room/ With no thoughts” make me think of kakyoin deeply- if his family had never gone to egypt and he’d never met dio or jotaro, what would have happened to him? Who would he be? i’ve always been super attached to that part of kak bc fundamentally… I Relate. but also i am just fond of it because it makes me sob- he deserved so much better than to get murdered by the same man who manipulated his entire identity right at the climax of his character arc….some crimes can never be forgiven, hirohiko….

vertigo- i don’t listen to this song for kak often, but it is a Quintessential Kakyoin song. according to khalid’s twitter, vertigo is a song about “Overcoming overthinking. After every dark days, there’s a brighter outcome. Being at a super low place in your life and realizing that, there’s other people going through that same path you’re walking down. There’s always light at the end of the tunnel. It’s also a story about fear of abandonment.” which….Big Kakyoin Energies. The “Are we alive?Or are we dreaming?” part also ties back into the Kakyoin Parties in a Coma for a Month arc- your mind has a wild wild time when you’re in a medically induced coma, theoretically because it’s trying to fill in the blanks for all of the stuff you’re sensing? And coming out of a medically induced coma is a bizarre experience, where it’s hard to tell if you’re still in the coma and just imagining things or if you’re actually awake. Kakyoin has a mad time in the month immediately after SDC, one that i’m sure he doesn’t enjoy too much after the death 13 fight.

honorable mention goes to i am not yours- this has been a kak song to me for a long time as well. the context of the song is way different from my interpretation for this setting, but AH. I just think kakyoin really struggles to differentiate and understand romantic feelings. This song really reminds me of that struggle, and I think also touches nicely on like. the identity issue of it all too.. “yet i am i, who long to be” yanno? ; J ; it’s hard for me to explain

another honorable mention, my statue sinking. in the sda, after the events in egpyt, kakyoin is thrown into a coma for like an entire month while his body gets operated back together, and then he spends months in physical therapy learning how to walk w a prosthetic spine (kudos to cyborg speedwagon being a reverse engineering madman :D). i like to imagine that there’s also some degree of therapy going on this whole time, also. you don’t just get donuted + thrown into a coma for a month without some counseling to get you back on your feet..i think the lasting effects of dio’s influence are addressed here, but only briefly because it’s not something kakyoin is eager to explore. however, I think that this song captures the like... distress? i guess? of knowing that your life has been irreparably thrown off course because of dio. like yes, you met some really wonderful people that helped you learn how deeply healing friendship could be! but also.. you lost months of your life to mind control, and then another month to a coma, and then additional months to training your body to function again....there’s some psychological stress there. While I think that Jotaro and Polnareff are affected the most by the crusade, I think they all emerge from it with some degree of ptsd. Being targeted by complete strangers at all times of day cannot be good for your mental health, you know? Anyhow, I think My Statue Sinking captures that aftermath feeling really well. Everyone survives and recovers from the crusade, but there’s a part in all of them that is lost to Egypt. 

on to sergio!! (it is now 2:04 am lmaooooooo) sergio will be easy because I only ever listen to the same handful of songs when I’m writing him hdhgh

i will come to you- this is THE sergio song. i think of this song every time i write about him, whether it’s the “believe in me…” “also believe in me” lyric exchange that i imagine he has with both tomoko and holly; the “and i will pray to my father…my father…and he will abide” part being about him reaching out to joseph with his final breaths and spilling all of the beans about dio and begging him to finish things so that Tomoko and Josuke, the Kujos, and he and Suzi can be safe; the “foreeever……foreee-eever.. forever..” part being where he dies and his soul passes into the next realm.. “even the spirit of truth [golden prophet] whom the world [..yeah..] cannot receive, because it seeth him not [bc suad defects and buries sergio instead of bringing his dead body to dio]. Neither knoweth him, but you know him…for he dwelleth in you and he shall be in you [literally the entire joestar/kujo/higashikata family being so near and dear to him + his spirit being with them even after death]” and then, like.. george i, jonathan, and george ii coming to retrieve his soul during the “heeeee shallll beee in youuu” part… “i will not leave you comfortless. i Will Not leave.. You Comfortless… iiii wiiiill come…. to you.. to You” part being about his soul mingling within star platinum and crazy diamond because he has a Need, even in death, to protect them. UGH (also his essence being especially prevalent in crazy diamond, which is partially why its power is to repair things!! bc hamon! ; O ;) literally I have an Entire music video with sergio’s death set to this music. i’ve listened to it way too many times.

when david heard- so to be frank this is actually more of a joseph song, but it’s only a joseph song when sergio exists + gets murdered. :o i cried the first time i listened to this, and then months later i listened to it while thinking of sergio + like. sobbed fr fr. Joseph is asleep when Sergio calls him, so he gets sergio’s final message as a voicemail on his answering machine hours after the fact. the message itself is chilling because Joseph had no clue his son had gone on this huge mission by himself to kill Dio, and now he’s dead! however, it’s made even worse because Joseph wasn’t there to pick the call up and comfort his son in his dying breaths or do Anything. it’s just like Caesar, which is. god awful. it’s such a horrible realization because sergio, whom joseph named after what caesar wanted to name his own son, has been condemned to the same fate as his namesake. Thus this song- i’ve yet to come across a song that captures the feeling of hearing that kind of news so well. (also when i tag things as my sOOOOON or *cries my son in 8-part harmony a la whitacre*, this is the song i’m referencing :D)

zombies / terrified- ahhh, these songs capture the HORROR sergio feels upon sensing dio’s presence in Japan really well. (also “I���m going to eat you alive/please don’t find me rude, but i don’t eat fast food/ so don’t run too fast” is SUCH a dio mood…) Sergio maintains his composure about the Dio Dilemma for a good year before he flies off the handle, and his entire proto-crusade against the vampire is just. Laced with paranoia, even if he is learning a ton of useful skills. These two songs capture that feeling of something constantly watching/creeping up on you so well, and ever since i discovered them, I’ve listened to them for Sergio inspo.

the prophet- This is the only song I’ve done so far that the characters would actually listen to lmao. Sergio is a Huge fan of The Temptations, and his stand is actually named after this song! (+ the esoteric title for the hermit, which was really amazing luck on my end ; J ;) it also had a huge hand in figuring out what his stand power would be, the lyric that decided it was “God doesn’t listen to the words you pray; he hears what your heart has got to say.” However, the entire last stanza of the song ties really well into his character arc fhshgh. Also, this song just feels like it could Be the child of Bloody Stream, if that makes any sense. it’s so groovy and funky, but the lyrics are like big ominous lmao. I was super ecstatic to find this song- if sergio were to ever get an animation, this song would be the OP, yanno?

armageddon- This is another “this song would be on their personal playlist” song. Sergio’s got a lot of love for all styles of music in his heart, but jazz is his home base and always what he comes back to. I like to imagine that Lisa Lisa’s husband introduces Sergio to Wayne Shorter’s music at the age of like 8 or 9, and Sergio’s just. obsessed with the man’s music for the rest of his life. I really love Shorter’s explanation for the meaning of this song and its album as a whole: “What I’m trying to express here is a sense of judgment approaching - judgment for everything alive from the smallest ant to man. I know that the accepted meaning of ‘Armageddon’ is the last battle between good and evil - whatever it is. But my definition of the judgment to come is a period of total enlightenment in which we will discover what we are and why we’re here.” Like… wig.. I feel like that’s such big sergio energy. Armageddon itself also feels like a really nice ED- it’s lively, but in a good episode-ending kind of way. Do i dream of animating Sergio’s adventure one day? Mayhaps.

honorable mention goes to just my imagination/ my girl- We’ve covered that Sergio adores The Temptations, so it’s no secret that he would listen to these songs ceaselessly. however, i really like the broadway harmonies + instrumentals that they did for Ain’t Too Proud, so that’s what’s goin in here. these songs are THE tomoko/sergio songs…He loves Tomoko and the way she quips + teases + gets up to nonsense with him So Much. There’s a huge part of him that has No Idea what Tomoko sees in a music geek like him, but ughh he is so grateful that she likes him because she is a Goddess. he’s blessed yo..

Your life changed a lot since the party at the factory. Even if you were still the "University ray of sunshine", students found another nickname for you and your friends: Beauty and the Beasts. To be honest, you liked it, it made you smile, and, since you spent most of your time with the boys, it was true that this nickname suited you pretty well. Because, yes, your habits also changed. You tried to see Meena every day and spent most of your time with the boys, hanging out with them every Friday and Saturday nights. More surprising, the school library wasn't your favourite place anymore even if you kept going there after classes, but only for an hour or two. Yes, your life changed except for one "thing": Minghao. Even if he was a little more cool with you, he still didn't talk a lot to you, kept looking at you coldly and he tried to avoid touches the most he could. Except during the Friday and Saturday nights. Since almost everyone at the factory thought you both were dating, Minghao played with that, being more close to you, whispering in your ear, his arm often around your shoulders or waist. At the beginning, you didn't know what to think about his behaviour but, with time, you accepted that he just wanted to keep his fangirls away, using you as his fake girlfriend. You couldn't deny it, it hurt you a bit but you acted like it was okay, like you didn't care. But you did. Even if Minghao made you uncomfortable or scared you sometimes, looking at you with his deep dark eyes, saying nothing, your heart was racing every time you made eye contact with him. You often surprised yourself wishing to be in his arms or seeing him smiling at you like he did at the first party you went to with the boys. Well, he did but only when you pretended to be his girlfriend. Meena, who noticed you had some feelings for her chinese friend, comforted you every time she saw you were sad because of him. She wanted to do more for you, to help you, but as she told you, even if she knew the boys for five years, Minghao was still an enigma for her. He already dated some girls but they were so different from each other that Meena didn't know if Minghao really had a kind of girl. "Don't worry." You always said, smiling sadly. "It's just a kind of crush, I'll get over it." You meant it, you really meant it when you said you would surely get over him but you didn't know if you really wanted it. Even if it hurt, you weren't sure if you wanted to move on. What was wrong with you? Immediately, you noticed all the bruises on his face and asked what happened. "Who did that?" Seungcheol growled. "It's nothing, I'm good." Hansol replied and walked over to the school building. You shared concerned looks with your friends and went to your classes when the bell rang. Something was wrong with Hansol and you were worried about him. You wanted to help him, no, you had to help him. Sitting at your place, looking through the window without paying attention to the teacher, you were thinking about your friend, the anger and the sadness you saw in his eyes. Even if he was a sort of delinquent, Hansol was also a cheery and nice boy, the kind of guy who always cheered his friends up, making them smile. Seeing him like that broke your heart. A sigh escaped from your lips while you turned your face to the teacher and noticed from the corner of your eyes someone walking the corridors, you could see a scalp through the windows that overlooked the halls. You couldn't say why or how but you knew it was Hansol. "Sir?" You said loudly, raising your hand. "I'm sorry, I don't feel well. Can... Can I go out, please?" The teacher nodded and let you leave the classroom without question. You thanked him and, pretending your stomach was painful, you stood up and went out, chasing after Hansol. "What are you doing here?" Your friend asked, his eyes wide open. "I lied to the teacher. You guys have a really bad influence on me." You smirked, wrapping your arm around his shoulders. "Where are you going?" "Infirmary." He answered, showing you his bleeding phalanges. "I scratched them." "Let me come with you. I'm supposed to be sick too." He sadly smiled and let you enter the infirmary before him, holding the door for you. Sat on the beds in the rest room, you stared at Hansol and stood up from your bed to sit next to him, taking gently his hands in yours. You could see how uncomfortable he was but, rubbing his left shoulder, you told him he could be relax, you wouldn't judge him. "What's wrong?" You simply asked, looking at his sad face. "I promise, this stays between us." "I'm stupid." He sighed. "I... I was seeing a girl lately and I heard she was already dating a guy." "Oh, I'm so sorry, Hansol." "I tried to talk with her, I wanted to know why she chose him over me. She... She told me that I'm not good enough, that I don't deserve someone like her and I think she's right." "What? Are you serious?" You exclaimed, opening your eyes wide with shock. "Do you really think that? Look at me, Hansol." You said, cupping his face in your hands and looked straight into his brown eyes. "You're one of the best guys I know. You're funny, cute, nice, strong, sweet, adorable, smart and always cheering everyone up. You deserve to be happy and this girl can't even know what she's missing. But it's better for you. You don't deserve someone like her, it's true, you deserve better. Never think otherwise, okay?" Caught by surprise, Hansol stared at you, his eyes wide open. He knew you were one of the sweetest girls on Earth but he never thought you could be like that with him. He knew you both were friends but he didn't realise how much your friendship meant for you and how happy you wanted to see him. It became a habit of you both that your friend came to take you to the university in the morning and bring you back home after school. You never heard him complain about it and knew he didn't really mind it, he told you. Since it was Friday, you and the boys were going to the factory for the night and, as you always did on Fridays, you stood in front of your closet, looking for the clothes you would wear, when your heard your phone ring on your bed. Picking it up, you saw Minghao texted you. "Strange", you thought, unlocked your phone.

Swallowing, you locked up your phone and threw it on your bed. If helping Hansol that morning made you feel happy, this conversation with Minghao broke your heart. Even if you knew he didn't share your feelings, you had a kind of hope. You didn't have it anymore. Hurt, you turned to your closet and took the first clothes you saw and went to the bathroom to get ready for the night. When you heard Minghao's bike outside, you left your house and, faking a smile like a pro, you climbed on his bike after locked his helmet on your head. You weren't really excited to go to the factory and, to be honest, you really didn't want to see Minghao's future girlfriend. Moreover, who would bring you home after? You shook your head a little and closed your eyes, enjoying what was probably your last ride with your friend. Meena immediately asked you what was wrong when she saw you coming over to the usual place of the group in the factory but you told her you didn't want to talk about it and, for the first time, took a beer from the icebox, surprising your friends. You still didn't like alcohol but, for this night, you needed something to help you forget how broken your heart was and, since you weren't used to drinking alcohol, you knew beer was enough for you to be a bit drunk. You were listening to what the boys were talking about when Meena asked you if the meeting for the next day was still okay. You planned a photoshoot with your friend at the Han River where you would be the photographer. Nodding, you told her to come at 1.30pm and bring three different outfits. "Can I come with the boys?" Jisoo asked with a smile. "If Meena is okay, yes, you can." You replied nonchalantly, drinking another sip of your beer while Meena was nodding at her boyfriend. "I'll bring food, we could have a picnic, if you want. It would be cool." "Battle time!" Seuncheol shouted when the DJ played the song for the dance battles. You sighed and followed the group to the dance floor, standing at your usual place, behind Minghao, Meena holding your arm. Even if you were still amazed by Minghao's moves, this night, you weren't in the mood to encourage him and, when the battle was over, you went back at your table, avoiding the celebration of your friend's new win. Hansol noticed that and came to your side, bumping your shoulder gently. "I guess it's my turn, now." He said, looking at you with a friendly smile. "What's wrong, Y/n?" "Nothing, don't worry." You replied while you saw Minghao walking over to a stunning girl. Whispering in her ear, you saw him put his hand on her lower back, giving her a sweet and lovely smile. Well, his future girlfriend was gorgeous, he had good taste. "Y/n, are you okay?" Wonwoo asked, coming back to your usual place, followed by the boys. "I think I'm sick." You told him, putting your hand on your stomach, frowning a little. "I should get back home." "No!" Seungcheol exclaimed loudly, panicked. "I mean, you might feel better soon. Stay with us." "If she wants to get back home, let her leave, S.coups." Meena said after noticing the girl with Minghao was talking to. "Jisoo, bring her home, please." "No problem." You friend replied, smiling lovely at you before grabbing your hand. "Come on, cutie pie." "But-" "No "but", S.coups!" Meena cut him off. "Take my helmet, Y/n." You thanked your friend and took her helmet before waving at the boys and leaving the factory with Jisoo. He didn't ask anything, guessing you probably didn't want to talk, and dropped you in front of your house. "If you need anything, call me." He told you, kissing your forehead before hugging you tightly. "I love you, cutie pie." "I love you too." You whispered before pulling away and let him climb back on his bike. You watched him driving away and took your keys from your jacket pocket but sighed as you looked at the locked door. You knew if you entered your home, you would cry and that was the last thing you wanted. So, instead of going back home, you walked away, reaching a little park where you played everyday when you were a kid. He took the necklace from your hand and, kissing you, tied it around your neck. "It look even more perfect on you." "Does it mean that I'll need a lot of luck with you?" You teased him with a playful smile. "Not only luck, a lot of patience, too." He smirked before looking straight into your eyes. "But that mostly means that you are infinitely stuck with me, now." Smiling, you nodded and left the park, holding your boyfriend's hand, still feeling stupid about the misunderstanding. While you where walking, you saw Minghao's bike parked in front of a house and asked if it was his. Nodding, he told you he was like you, almost living alone since his parents were always on business trips. "You can come when you want." He added, putting a sweet kiss on the top of your head. However, he didn't expect to see you in front of his door, almost 20 minutes later, wearing a long pastel pink cardigan on top of a white and grey nightie. "Come on, baobei." He smiled and let you in, sliding his hand in your lower back and pulling you into an ardent kiss. "I... I didn't want to sleep alone." You whispered against his lips and saw him raise his eyebrows. "Just sleep." You sighed, rolling your eyes, as you wrapped your arms around his neck. You felt his hands sliding along your hips and squeezing your bottoms slightly, making you moan with pleasure. Another smirk stretched the corner of his lips. "Yeah, sure, just sleep." Minghao chuckled as he lifted your legs, wrapping them around his waist, and pulled you against the wall of the entry corridor. You let a whimper escape from your mouth as you shyly tried to make Minghao understand you never had a boyfriend before. He pulled away and, watching all over your face with a lovely smile, tucked a strand of hair behind your ear. "We can just sleep if that's what you want, baobei." "It's not." You replied honestly, stroking the back of his head. "It's just that..." "Trust me, Y/n, I'll take care of you." You nodded and, burying your face into his neck, let him carry you to his bedroom.

A light touch on your bare shoulder woke you up and, when you opened your sleepy eyes, you saw Minghao looking at you as if you were the most beautiful thing he'd never seen. His gaze was sweet and the smile on his lips proved how happy the young man was at this moment. A shy smile appeared on your lips as you covered your face with the blanket, making your boyfriend chuckle. One of his hands slid under your head whilst his other reached your lower back and pulled your naked body closer to his. "Did you sleep well?" He asked you while his fingertips drew small circles in your back, his mouth against your forehead. You nodded slightly and asked the same thing. "Best night I've had. Tell me, Y/n..." He cleared his throat. "Did... Did I really scare you?" "A bit." You admitted, raising your head as you bit your bottom lip. "You were so cold with me, you didn't talk a lot and when you were looking at me, it was like you were thinking about all the possible ways of killing me." "I would say kissing you but if you rather think I wanted to kill you, okay." He chuckled. "But you know, when I was looking at you, I only tried to know what you were thinking. I didn't know how to be when I was with you. You gave me signs at the factory but, when we were at the university, it was like if we were just buddies, nothing more." "Because I thought you saw me only as a fake girlfriend you kept to discourage your fangirls." You pouted. "I... I guess I was wrong." "Yes, you were." Minghao whispered, caressing your cheek. "More than you can imagine." His words and the sweetness of his touch caught you of guard. Even in your wildest dreams, you never thought Minghao could be like that, much less with you. It felt like a dream. "What are you doing?" He frowned when he saw you pinch your cheek, checking if you weren't dreaming. "No... nothing." You replied, rubbing your cheek, before sitting up in the bed, holding the blanket against your chest. "What time is it?" "Time to get back here." He grumbled, wrapping an arm around your waist, forcing you to lie back. Laughing, you said you had to go home, reminding him the picnic with your friends and the fact you needed to change. Minghao joked and told you that, if you came to the picnic dressed like you were when you came to his house during the night, your friends would apologise to you immediately. You punched his chest and told him to leave you, trying to escape from his grip, when he got on top of you, locking his eyes into yours. You felt your heart skip a beat while every one of your cells were craving for his touch, for his body against yours, for his lips into your neck or on your breast. Your cheeks turned red when Minghao stared at your naked body, his eyes full of lust and admiration. You tried to cover yourself but he grabbed your wrists and, putting them above your head, kissed you like his life depended on it. "Hao, I... I have to go home. I... I have to get ready for the shooting. Meena's counting on me, please." You heard him growl as he was sucking in your neck, leaving a fresh and bloody mark on your skin. He pulled away and put a sweet kiss on your forehead before standing up and putting on some clothes, handing you one of his shirts. "I think it's better if your wear that." He grinned, picking your nightie up off the floor. "Except if you want people see you with that." "Your shirt will be perfect." You chuckled, grabbing your clothes. "Hao?" "Hm?" "I..." You lowered your head and intertwined your fingers. "I really like you." "Don't say that, baobei, or you won't leave this room." He grinned again, an eyebrow raised. "Okay, okay, I don't like you!" You joked as you started to leave Minghao's bed. "Yes, you do!" He grabbed your waist and pulled you back on his bed, kissing all over your face while you were laughing. "Hao, I'm gonna be late!"

Friends at the table live blogging? Reaction? Thoughts? What is this?

So I know usually people start these at episode one but when I started listening to this podcast it was just cause I was super bored and I had no intention of liking it so much. But I do like it incredibly lots and there isn't enough content out there for autumn in hieron, (which is what I'm currently listening through because I decided to start at the beginning), and there needs to be more. So I'm going to write out my reactions and predictions for the rest of this season (I'm on episode 21 now.) I've also already made some art so I'll post that along with the reactions. All of this ill tag as #myf@ttreactions so... I guess if I end up spamming you can block it or if you come across this later and want to read it all in order you can do that too.

Alright. So to recap what I've listened to so far. Obviously, this will contain spoilers but I'll try to be somewhat vague? So if you do plan on listening but don't mind spoilers it's not gonna be like there's no point in listening anymore?

The first arc (the first tower? Idk if there's a naming system in place for the arcs within each season? Are their multiple arcs in other seasons of hieron? Idk. I've been trying to avoid spoilers.) I'll just call it the first tower until I'm told otherwise.

The first tower was super interesting, although at that point I couldn't tell the difference between any of the voices except phantasmo and hella? So I didn't super follow the character development or interactions super well (also the audio wasn't great early on). But the whole thing about every npc having a goal and at least some personality is a thing I really love. The whole thing with the animated chefs hat? Brilliant loved it.

hadrian killed the skeleton dude! I was also upset about it!

Even this early on I was in love with austins story telling. He gives everything such personality and seems capable of just going with whatever the players decide to do in a way I find almost unbelievable? Like? How????? Teach me your ways?

Also they are all so... Earnest and unabashed in caring about their characters and the world? basically they are a bunch of nerds, but that caring is something that means a lot to me.

All the characters arguing at the end was interesting? Like these guys aren't just gonna stick together cause their the player characters, they're willing to split up or fight and I found that very interesting. I've only listened to taz as far as actual play podcasts are concerned so forgive me if I don't know how rpg podcasting usually goes or compare these two a lot.

Hella and phantasmo were my favorites at this point (because they were the only voices I could recognize), and I thought hadrian and fero were the same person??? Sort of? I was very confused.

And I think that's all I have to say about the first tower.

So on to snow party and then boat party.

at this point 1. The audio got better, and 2. I realized fero and hadrian were different people because they were in two different places.

Throndir is introduced and is a tentative favorite. He has a dog, is an elf, looks up to two idiots, is just generally adorable?

Hadrian decides not to sleep after having nightmares. Yes yes yes give meee angst. Also having come to this from listening to Taz the willingness to explore the characters emotions so much was very nice? Like taz is great, but it is about 90% goofs, which is great and what a lot of people like about it, and is something I like about it. It's just rather surprising going from one sort of extreme to the other? Anyway, I liked it.

Phantasmo goes invisible and then reality slowly disappears? Spooky. Very nice. They go into how he's feeling about it? Copy paste the paragraph I just wrote again. That good good character development stuff! I could probably have writen a pretty in character fanfic about phantasmo just having the information about him from that one thing?

The ice monster? Spookyyyy! Also. Throndir slowly rising as a solid favorite. My boy was so cold and scared! ;-;

Phantasmo is an old grumpidygrump. I love.

Hadrian tries his best.

Wooorddd eatterrrsssss!!! This idea confused me a lot. And still does? How does one subsist on words? How do you eat a word? Do you eat it from just one person or does it disappear for everyone? Phantasmo didn't forget samothese's name, but at the same time it seems like the snow elves forgot about the goblins pretty thoroughly. Maybe just cause they live shorter now? And have lived with the word eaters for a long time? How do they not know the word eaters exist? Do the word eaters not turn them wordless ever? I have so many questions! Does a word eater have any consciousness before it eats a word? Or is it just a collection of words that eventually form a consciousness? What ARE they?

Phantasmos speech to the word eater.... O.O He was actually helpful? Wowowow. Also, super cool.

He immediately rubs it in everyones faces. Of course.

Also apparently throndir is part goblin??? When did that happen? The next episode just sort of started with them talking about it and I feel like I missed something??? Please help, where was that? When did that happen?

Also the goblin asking if throndir is going to torture the other pcs. Hints at tragic backstory™? 👀

And. Now i must scream about the entire part with the other snow elves!!!!!!!!!!

Like!!! They disected people!? And throndir saw it!? First of all, that's gotta be a bit traumatic, secondly, that's gotta be like terrifying also!!? Likewhkahskwbdjdjdjsksjd. I am a sucker for angst and you are just giving me this!? You're just giving it to me??? There is so MUCH that can be pulled out of this!? Also I didn't have any wifi or signal for a couple days in between them being captured and it being revealed that they were going to let throndir go and I am gonna have to write a fic some time about what I thought was going to happen. It definitely included throndir getting disected with like magic and things and was uuuu.. Very angst.

Throndir is my favorite for sure at this point. 100%. He's my boyy.

Alright now back to BOAT PARTYYYY!!!

Calhoun is great. Everything great. Then it's not.

Emanuel and lem!!!!! Im slow on the uptake when it comes to romance (ace here, hello) but I think this is the fastest I've ever shipped anything. Aka when lem decided he'd stay in the city with Emanuel and the others were kinda teasing him about how he had this whole idea of Emanuel in his mind... I was like haaanngg on a second! Is the romantic tension so strong here that even I can sense it!? Also then lem jokingly called him his boyfriend so.

Probably everyone else shipped it immediately when lem stopped fighting because Emanuel looked at him funny...

Again, austins ability to just sort of take whatever the players do and just go with it? Like now there's this whole ghost city!??

I really hope things turn out alright with lem and Emanuel, like. I hope Emanuel is still around in 4 seasons? (Or however many seasons of hieron there is?)

I just realized that if there's 4 seasons of hieron then that us an incredible pun and I am proud of whoever came up with it? If it wasn't just a coincidence? Is this a thing people are aware of? Have I unlocked my third eye?

I'm listening to episode 21 right now so I need to cry about Calhoun a bit. Like. Oof. Hella why. Also Ali/Hella was crying!!? And Calhoun was crying? And now I'm crying!? Calhoun became a favorite character of mine and then immediately died in like 2 minutes.

...i have now reached the end of episode 21 and I am scared.

Calhoun please don't change now? Like kill hella sure, but don't become eviill?? I just want everyone to be happy ;~;

My History Of Dating

Looking at all of my past relationships and love affairs, I realized one thing: most of them were digital. Really, we only wanted to include this as another shining example of how. much. Andrea. sucks. Her M.O doesn't change! First, she falls in with a group (or person, in the case of Michonne) who, for some inexplicable reason, feels a responsibility to look out for her. Then, she starts pouting about things like her gun or sleeping in a warm bed. At all times. Next, her obsession with those things completely blinds what little judgment she has and causes her to blow off the people who have consistently had her back. Seriously, how do you let Michonne walk out of your life because The Governor gave you a drink?! Phillip obviously honed in on that massive ego of hers because he said all the right things to make her feel like she was important, which blinded her to his true agenda. Though it was handled extremely messily and unprofessionally, we can’t be mad at the then showrunner for abruptly abandoning the plan to keep Andrea alive. Good riddance.

12. Negan and Lucille

Though the show hasn’t delved too far into Negan’s super creepy obsession with his barbed wire wrapped bat Lucille, we can’t help but be a little mystified by his attachment to this inanimate object. But attached he most certainly is! Whether he’s giving some captive audience another long-winded speech, bashing in the heads of some of our favorite people or just sitting down for a nice spaghetti dinner at Rick’s, Lucille is never far from Negan’s clutches. In fact, Negan addresses Lucille with such tenderness that it begins to make you wonder if there’s a real heart buried underneath the leather and presentation scarves. But then we remember that Lucille is made of wood and Negan is bat shit crazy.

11. Carl and Enid

Over the course of six and a half seasons, we have watched as Carl Grimes has grown into a young man. So when Enid was introduced, we knew it was only a matter of time before Carl caught feelings. Though the two got off to a rocky start thanks to Enid’s standoffish teenage angst and then her romance with crappy Jessie’s crappy son Ron, the two found their way to each other. Carl locked Enid in a closet at the end of season six in a sweet, if not misguided, attempt to keep her out of harm’s way. When Enid set out for Hilltop in season seven to see Maggie, her safety was threatened by walkers, but Carl’s terrible driving skills saved the day. The two shared their first kiss and rollerskated off into the sunset. Well, sort of.

10. Tyreese and Karen

We admit that we were a bit perplexed by the apparent intensity of this relationship. Guess there’s nothing like a zombie apocalypse to take a relationship from 0-60!  In fact, we weren’t even sure we knew Karen’s name before she was unceremoniously murdered by Carol. However, this relationship combined with Karen’s death, set off a significant chain of events, culminating in Carol’s banishment from the group. We’re fine with a few brief conversations between Tyreese and Karen for that kind of pay off.

9. Sasha and Abe

These two civil servants found kindred spirits in each other after they went through consecutive bouts of PTSD and came out on the other side ready to try life again. We weren’t sure sure if we could buy it, (Sasha seemed far too serious for Abraham’s sophomoric, though hilarious thought process) but we couldn’t deny that his Say Anything moment – standing outside her house, declaring, “Could be 30 years for us here. That’s still too short,” was positively swoonworthy. Who knew Mr. Dolphin Smooth could emote such sincerity? Inspired by Glenn and Maggie’s growing family, Abraham realized he wanted a family of his own with Sasha. As with most good things on The Walking Dead, their happiness came to an abrupt end when Abraham fell victim to Negan’s bludgeoning. But not before Abraham made us feel all the feels when he flashed a subtle peace sign to Sasha, letting her know everything was going to be alright.

8. Deanna and Reg

Yeah, they were delusional about what was actually happening outside those walls (and we’re not even sure Reg built those walls right; why were the supports on the outside where people could just shimmy up them?), but the fact that they worked together to create this safe zone for so many people for so long is pretty extraordinary. Plus, they’re out here throwing welcome parties for new Alexandria residents. It’s definitely a better welcome than the one our group got from Gareth.

7. Abe and Rosita

Not everything has to be about true love in the zombie apocalypse; sometimes proximity is the name of the game. When we’re introduced to the two’s physical relationship – by way of a peeping Eugene – it seems like they may only be in it for the nookie, but there’s definite affection there. These two are another example of great teamwork. We love that she’s willing to stand up to him when he’s acting like an ass. They’re also a fascinating look at what happens when he’s just not that into you any more. And it’s the zombie apocalypse. And you still have to look at each other every day. And the person he left you for is one of the 60 people in the world you know. Yikes. After the brutal murder of Abraham, we have watched as Rosita tries to come to grips with the loss of the man she loved who did not love her back.

6. Shane and Lori

Record scratch? Not quite. No matter how many mixed signals Lori gave to Shane, they definitely shared a deep connection, whether or not it was a long time coming (per Shane) or Lori’s need to just feel something again. This relationship was felt in all threads of the first two seasons, and even in part of the third. Members of the group were caught between their two co-leaders as a full scale soap opera played out behind the scenes. Their liaison caused a rift so deep between best friends Rick and Shane that they were both ready to murder each other over Lori. We’re glad Rick won that one, but it would have been interesting to see more of Lori and Shane actually together. Banished from the group, but together. Their relationship was easily more compelling than Rick and Lori’s. Plus, they gave us Li’l Asskicker! We’ll keep her with us, though, thank you very much.

5. Aaron and Eric

Though we didn’t see much of the couple during season six, these two are still alive and kicking as Alexandria's oldest (?) most established (?) couple. The way

they care for each other is so cute. Aaron risked life, limb and the wrath of Man Bush (™ Negan) Rick to run to Eric’s side when a flare went off and it seemed like Eric might be in danger. Eric risked life and limb to go out scouting with Aaron, even though he’s terrible at it, to make sure that Aaron didn’t go out alone. They invite strays like Daryl in for a spaghetti dinner. What’s not to love?

4. Denise and Tara

Though we’ve technically known Tara longer, we feel like we know Denise

better. We saw her face paralyzing anxiety when she was suddenly thrust into the role of Alexandria’s only doctor after Pete was executed by Rick (Pete, that’s what you get for grabbing katanas that don’t belong to you!) and she stepped up beautifully. She came out of her shell, saved lives, got brave enough to plant a kiss on Tara and got a girlfriend in return. We were so sad (and shocked) when an arrow through the eye cut her life short. Tara carried on for what seemed like an eternity not knowing about the loss of her love, only to find out from Eugene upon returning to Alexandria from her run. In true Tara fashion, she maintained her glass half full mentality.

3. Sasha and Bob

Bob entered Sasha’s life, seemingly unfazed by the slight inconvenience of the world’s end. Every time she brought up another one of the byproducts of the crumbling of life as they knew it, he presented a quick rebuttal – a silver lining. Though it was the silliest of games, it exemplified Bob’s charm and sunny disposition and it quickly rubbed off on Sasha. When Tyreese was reunited with his sister and the rest of the group after the prison fell, he immediately noticed the change in her. We got to see Sasha’s beautiful smile light up her face time and time again and we have Bob to thank for that.

2. Glenn and Maggie

They started with Maggie declaring “I’ll have sex with you” while on a run with Glenn and only knowing him for two days. Who would have thought that hook-up would have led to the show’s most stable couple? We saw Glenn go from a boy to a man, from walker bait to a leader and it was all fueled by Maggie’s love for and belief in him. Maggie’s whole heart was in Glenn and we saw her press on, under impossible circumstances to find him; it’s almost as if they knew each other’s need for the other to be alive actually kept them alive. Also, let’s not forget the beautiful relationship Glenn formed with Maggie’s father, Hershel. Maggie gave him strength, but Glenn gave her tenderness. Our hearts were filled with hope when we found out the pair were expecting only to be shattered to bits as Glenn uttered his last words, “Maggie, I will find you” before dying at the hands of Negan. Even after Glenn’s untimely demise, Maggie has continued to draw strength and hope from him, showing us that love really can survive death.

1. Rick and Michonne

Woo! Where to start with the best couple ever? We’ve been on the Richonne train since season three. How could we not? They drew us in with their intensity, first as people who were extremely distrustful of each other, then as allies and partners. By the time season four rolled around, Rick and Carl were literally running to Michonne when she returned with smiles on their faces, and we knew that we had to see them make it official. After the prison was lost, we saw them reunite and function as a family unit, a dynamic that is still there to this day. In season five, we witnessed a subtle shift as Michonne moved into the place of Rick’s right hand, edging out Daryl. In season six, after the zombies thankfully took care of basic Jessie and whatever mental breakdown Rick was projecting on her, our dreams were realized in a quiet moment on a couch. During the front half of season seven, we watched as our dynamic duo dealt with the aftermath of Negan’s reign of terror. Rick was resigned to the idea of settling for a life under Negan’s rule if it meant protecting those he loved. However, Michonne was ready to go into battle. We ended the midseason as Michonne reminded Rick of how far they’ve come saying, “We’re still here, the two of us. We’re still standing, and we’re gonna keep standing.” Rick has Michonne’s loyalty. Michonne has Rick’s deference. Both things they were missing in their earlier relationships. We can’t wait to see what this power couple will bring to the show now that they know they’re strengthened in each other’s love.
