Also I CANNOT BELIEVE you've gotten this far into my blog without getting swept up in prowrestling, because it's been my on-off fixation since 2002! Which just means I have to SHARE THINGS, now hold on to your hats!

First of all, not fake! Choreographed! Usually on the spot! (for veterans who are already established) They're not treating this like a competitive sport, they're treating this like a live stage play where the language is mostly physical. Which is made even more amazing because they don't have a take two, and if you mess up, it could be very dangerous. The injuries are very real to the point that some moves have been understandably banned for the risk associated with them (mostly the ones that are tricky to time and/or are associated with potential head injuries which used to be more common back in the day). This also means that wrestlers straddle this amazingly thin line of making it look extremely real but at the same time protecting their opponent (because the idea is never to bench your opponent but to work with them. You're both here to tell a story---even if the results are pre-determined, you both write it in the ring from the the starting bell to the end in a way that make the crowd invested. Crowd investment is what drives or kills your rivalries/narrative which in turn controls your success in the business. There is generally nothing worse than having a crowd be apathetic to you---they must want to either pay to see you win, or see you beaten). Thus wrestlers who often seem like the worst enemies in the ring are often best friends irl and/or heavily trust one another to at least be professional. A wrestler who won't or doesn't know how to protect their opponent in the ring (If you watch wrestling matches, you can sometimes spot these instances! The most obvious ones are when wrestlers throw away what they're holding to catch an opponent flying towards them, or when they subtly position themselves so their opponent's riskier aerial moves will land. You will also, if you're very sharp, pick up the moments where they actually ask each other if they're OK/can continue) is sometimes considered a dangerous worker and other wrestlers may rightfully be very wary about working with them.

The appeal of it is the athleticism and the melodrama! It's cathartic to watch especially when you have fan favorites and hated heels! Like, even if it's choregraphed? This shit is a thing of beauty.

And when the crowd is TRULY invested in a wrestler, it's like nothing else in the world.

Also a lot of them have, as such mastered the art of acting physically rather than with words, and it is viscerally engaging to watch.

I'll share some of my FAVORITE video promos to give you an idea of just how entrancingly melodramatic these bouts (Most bouts have a narrative and some are woven into each other over the span of several years!)

The drama just gets MORE INTENSE feat. conniving traitorous shitweasel Seth Rollins.

And it all culminates in this EPIC three-way fight between all three brothers. (Note the FANTASTIC use of theme ie. ‘This is a war’ by The Phantoms and specifically the “Power poisons the heart” section)

The Shield in particular (Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins) constantly put on an ABSOLUTE MASTERCLASS of acting as they carry out their Greek tragedy of a brotherhood, constantly oscillating between potentially the deepest love I’ve seen in the WWE, hate, betrayal and ambition (and how despite this all, until Dean eventually left the WWE for AEW, they were always brothers) I actually wrote a whole dissertation on them here.

I also wrote a dissertation on another amazing performer, Mustafa Ali who is in the unique spot of being one of the most popular ‘good’ characters despite being Muslim, which way back in the day usually meant you’d be cast as Evil Foreigner. He’s an amazing athlete and produces his OWN promos because he loves us fans that much and he’s also the most respectful towards fanartists!

It’s genuinely hard to match the energy of pro wrestling when it’s good, it’s something special and it’s happening before you LIVE. You are part of the story as it unfolds.

Also lbr, the entire thing is just..... easy on the eyes.

February 12, 2021: If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) (Part 1)

I’m not ready for this.

Look, I’ve made it no secret that I’m Black-American. And while I’m not going to get hyper-personal on this blog most of the time, I know that this one’s going to hit me...hard. Which is especially odd because from what I know about this film, I grew up in a very different time and environment than what’s presented here.

Fact of the matter is, while I definitely didn’t grow up rich or terribly well-off, I also didn’t grow up in a neighborhood like Beale Street. I’ve lived in the woods, on the beach, on a farm, in the suburbs, etc. And I’ve also spent quite a bit of time in NYC, but I’ve never straight-up lived there or in any big city. And does that make my experience as a Black-American invalid by any means?

But it has made my ability to personally identify with films like these...complicated. Specifically because they do feel so very personal, and I don’t always feel like they should to me...and yet...

Yeah, OK. I’ve wanted to see this one for a while, even though I’m extraordinarily sure that it’s going to hurt me...it’s gonna hurt me a lot. And I promise, I’ll try to be funny here, but...WHOOF, we’ll see what happens. SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Recap (1/2)

In the streets of New York City, in the 1970s, Clementine “Tish” Rivers (KiKi Layne) and Alfonso “Fonny” Hunt (Stephan James) are in love. This, however, is brought with a complication: Fonny has been wrongfully imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit. This, remember, is amongst the highly racist 1970s NYC, and the circumstances of Fonny’s arrest were not uncommon at the time, that’s for sure.

Tish sees Fonny in prison, and tells him the news, or what should be good news: she is pregnant with their child. And while they’re both happy, they are also both saddened by the circumstances. They try to have hope, though, as Tish’s family has hired a lawyer for him.

That night, she breaks the news to her parents, Joseph (Colman Domingo) and Sharon Rivers (Regina King), and her sister Ernestine (Teyonah Parris). They’re all quite happy, and decide to celebrate by inviting over Fonny’s parents as well. There’s a bit of an issue, though: his mother Alice (Aunjanue Ellis) and his sisters Adrienne (Ebony Obsidian) and Sheila (Dominique Thorne) DESPISE Tish, and Alice especially is hyper-religious.

When they find out, Alice essentially curses the child with sickness in a disgusting speech, an absolutely disgusting display. And Fonny’s father Frank (Michael Beach) agrees, reacting in a...bad way; he slaps her, HARD. This eventually causes a verbal beatdown by both Ernestine and Sharon. As a sample, here’s Ernestine’s putdown to Adrienne.

Adrienne, baby! Ever since the first day I laid eyes on your very fine person, I got caught up in your Adam’s apple. Oh, I’ve been dreamin’ about it. And I couldn’t tell whether I wanna tear it out with my fingers or my teeth. And if you touch my baby sister, I’m gonna have to make up my mind real quick. So, touch her.

HOLY SHIT. And it’s such a harsh beatdown, it causes Alice and her daughters to leave the movie ENTIRELY. Good riddance, to be honest. They take off, and FLASHBACK!

We go back to the first time that the two of them spent the night together, if you know what I mean. And throughout the occasion, we get the idea that these two are...very much in love. This film does seem to show that they’re in a very loving relationship, and I’m honestly here for it. Also, thus far, NO INFIDELITY! Finally; hopefully it stays that way.

Tish and Sharon go to see a lawyer, Hayward (Finn Whitrock), who doesn’t seem to have much hope. It’s also here that we get a look at the case at large. See, Fonny was wrongfully accused of the rape of a Puerto Rican woman, Victoria Rogers. Her testimony, corroborated by the testimony of policeman Officer Bell, somewhat muddled the case, and sent Fonny to prison in the end.

In order to help, they’ll need to get Victoria, who’s fled and can’t be found. Meanwhile, the other witness in favor of Fonny, Daniel Carty, has his testimony discounted due to bias. He’s also been arrested by the DA, hinting at some potential corruption. Speaking of Danny (Brian Tyree Henry), we see him sharing his prison experiences with Fonny in a flashback. And that recounting is...Christ, it’s haunting.

where to begin?

i really dont know where to begin, so let’s begin with onision’s earliest interactions with women, the following are excerpts from lifeofonion.com because they seem to have the most comprehensive knowledge of greg’s pre-skye life:

Childhood Girls Greg dated and/or had crushes on in Elementary School.

Aubry

He says Aubry was the first girl he ever dated and the first girl he ever thought he loved. They dated in the 2nd grade. Greg says one day a boy named Phillip said Aubry was his girlfriend and told Greg to get away from her. He said other "nasty things", so Greg asked Aubry if she minded watching him beat Phillip. She said she did not, so he turned around and "began swinging as hard and fast as I could..." Phillip grabbed Greg's long hair and flipped him. Greg says he landed on the ground and Phillip "managed to land quite a few punches." The fight was broken up and Greg says Phillip cried and Greg smiled. Greg says he and Phillip were "ok" after the fight, but Phillip passed away two years later.

He says he and Aubry never talked after the incident.

Alana Greg says he had a crush on Alana in elementary school. He says she always had surgeries on her arm and felt bad for her.

Amber Greg says he fell for Amber in the 4th grade and she was the most beautiful girl he met up until that point. He says he spoke to her on occasion, but in 2005 he said he lost track of her.

[Unknown Name] In the 4th grade, he asked a girl out that looked like Winona Ryder with a letter. She ended up dumping with with a letter.

This could be Amber (above).

Pre-teen Girls Greg dated and/or had crushes on when he was 10 to 12 years old.

Lindsey Greg says Lindsey asked him out when he was in the 5th grade. He didn't understand what she meant and asked, "which movie?" She later broke up with him from a line he believes she got from the WB. He says it was all a "sham", but he thought she was funny at the time.

Julia Julia was Greg's first kiss. He also had his first sexual experience with her. Greg was 11 and Julia was 15. This would have been in 1997. Greg spoke about his experiences with Julia several times over the years. In 2018, Greg named and modeled a character in his 3rd book, Reaper's Creek, after Julia and wrote about their sexual experiences. This caused some controversy due to their ages.In 2019, Greg bought a love doll to sell nude photos and videos of and named her Julia Love.

Crystal Greg says he dated Crystal in the 6th grade. He says she looked like Zooey Deschanel, "except she was Mexican". She dumped him because she thought he had blue eyes, when he really had green eyes.

Teen Girls Greg dated and/or had crushes on when he was a teenager

Monica Greg says he asked out Monica in the 7th grade. He says "she basically looked like Jennifer Love Hewitt with braces." They dated for two weeks. She dumped him because her friend did not like him.

Sharnell

Greg says they dated when he was 15-years-old. He says he groped Sharnell's boob, then broke up with her.

Jennifer Greg had a crush on Jennifer when he was 15. Jennifer is Michael's sister. They attended Greg's father's church. Greg says she was hyper and loved to run. Greg says he had his eyes on Jennifer for a while. He loved her high energy and he thought she was fun. He also notes that he liked that she was inexperienced with boys because he likes "teaching people about everything".

Greg confessed his feelings for her in a letter, but she called him and told him she did not think of him the same way. Greg continued to see her for a while whenever he would visit his father.

Ashley Greg says he met Ashley in his high school Earth Club. They spoke on and off for three years. Eventually they began watching movies together in each other's arms. The relationship came to an end when Greg invented his religion, Sicesca, and they had a huge fight over it. Ashley told Greg she never wanted to speak to him again and he laughed about it.

Unknown Age Greg did not specify when he dated these girls.

Danielle

Greg says he broke up with Danielle because "she kissed me like a garden hose." Greg says years after they dated, she called him to brag about how large her breasts got. Keesha Greg says he thought that Keesha was "literally, psychotically in love with me... like... horror film "in-love"." He says everything she owned had his name on it and "every other word she spoke was one directed towards me, about me..." He says he broke up with her because she hit on him too much. He tied to tell her he preferred smiling as flirting, but she did not understand.

Tia

They were friends, but ended up dating. He said it was weird and when they kissed, he didn't feel anything. They broke up after only dating four days.

In 2005, while talking about their short relationship, Greg says, "she's quite fantastic, she has a wonderful laugh, beautiful eyes, smile.. she just makes me feel comfortable..." They possibly could have still been friends at that point as he kept in contact with many of his exes at that time.

and now we move onto the skye era, which my main source will be lifeofonion still but also skye and shiloh’s testimonies about their relationship.

skye and greg met in 2001 in their computer class, but didn’t start talking until 2003, and by 2005 they were married and greg was enlisted in the us air force (usaf)

“Skye and her sister, "Netunesa", participated in many of Greg's early websites and videos. For example, they began working on a video series on January 2, 2005 titled Odd Dolls. This was described on their site as dolls doing "hilarious/nasty things to one another.. these things involved such acts as, murder, arson, PDA, swearing, and various other non-PC actions." They made about 24 episodes. Greg said he broke up with Skye for the first time because she was depressed and he told her he could never make her happy. They because friends. In January 2005, Greg signed up for the United States Air Force. A few months later, in March 2005, someone who is believed to be Skye's mother told her to "be careful around Greg" because of his anger. Greg confronts this person through email and explains that he argues with Skye to "teach her something." The next day, Greg sent Skye what seems to be an email talking about a separation between them. He forwarded the email to his ex Tanya and asked her opinion. He then sent his ex another email, seemingly trying to win her back. Two months after the incident, on May 28, 2005, Greg and Skye became engaged. Greg stated, before their marriage he asked Skye to sign a prenup and she cried. Greg now uses this incident as evidence of his claim that Skye put on "water works" because she was interested in his money.”

greg and skye married in august of 2005 and for the first few years of their marriage they moved around a lot due to greg’s military job.

“On January 24th, 2007 Greg wrote a long blog post explaining why he made the decision for he and Skye to stop hanging out with friends and only hang out with each other and family. He explains he chose Skye to be with him for the rest of his life and having friends does not improve it and makes him suffer. Three days later, on January 27th, 2007, two mutual friends of Greg and Skye tried to separate them because the friends believed Greg was bad for Skye. Greg replied to this on his blog and told the friends that they are in-fact the ones that are bad for Skye because they can't look past his personality and they don't know he tells Skye he loves her every day.”

this is clearly the beginning of greg’s isolation and abuse patterns which he continued with shiloh, and continues with kai.

“In a 2008 blog post, Greg reveals his worst nightmare is not about monsters, but of his his wife leaving him or vice versa. This is something he would again say about his [husband], [Kai], in 2016. During his marriage to Skye, Greg would publicly express never wanting to have children. He said it would be selfish to have children due to overpopulation. (this was a speaks video) Years after the marriage (and after becoming a father), Greg said it was Skye who didn't want children and that's why he would say that. Greg revealed a couple of their marriage agreements in a 2010 video titled "Lover's Pact". One is an "honesty pact", to never lie or keep secrets from each other. The other agreement is a "health pact", to stay skinny. He states it would be selfish for one of them to gain weight and not take into consideration the other person's sexual needs. He says it would be hard for them to maintain attraction for the other when they are "intentionally, consciously letting themselves go". Greg spoke more about his marriage to Skye on his OnisionSpeaks channel and would give viewers advice about how to have a successful marriage like theirs. It is believed most of these videos were removed from his channel after the divorce.During the entirety of the marriage, Greg would often talk about he and Skye's relationship fondly online. Even as late as 2010 (the year he divorced her), when Greg was asked "At what point did you realize that Skye was the one you wanted to spend your life with???" he responded "When I realized her morals and interests were almost identical to mine… and that she loved me more than any girl I ever met… even when I’m being annoying or rude… she loves me… as I do her." Now, Greg says he only saw Skye as a friend and describes the marriage as "friends with benefits" or "bros hanging out". He says he was actually in love with his ex Shiree and only married Skye to receive military benefits, such as living off base and not having to live in the dorms. He says he and Skye would watch anime, play video games, and make love, but the making love stopped at the end of the relationship.“

so the patterns of abuse and control continue with the “health pacts.”

“Greg created his Onision YouTube on January 29, 2006. Greg was discharged from the United States Air Force in January 2009. He and Skye lived with Greg's mother for 8 months while they were finding a house. According to Greg, there was an [incident] where Skye was crying and his mother laughed and screamed in her face. He says this was because Skye didn't want help out around the house. After the military, Greg began to seriously pursue a YouTube career. Skye worked out of the house and supported both of them while Greg stayed home and worked on building his YouTube career. When his channel became successful enough to financially support them both, he asked her to quit her job and work for the YouTube channel with him full time. Skye would often act in the Onision Channel skits and appeared in his first viral hit, Banana Song. She would also make appearances in some OnisionSpeaks videos, usually messing around in the background or sitting next to him. Skye also designed some Onision shirts for Greg. Skye was adored by virtually all of Greg's fan base at the time.Skye joined YouTube on February 9, 2008 with her own channel, Tantaga (channel now removed), where she uploaded comedy and blooper videos. The last recorded number of subscribers on the Tantaga channel before its deletion was 13,164. At some point, it seems Skye lost interest in YouTube and would not work with Greg on videos anymore. He says she would lay on the couch all day and watch anime or look at pictures of flowers and dresses on her laptop. Skye later revealed she was suffering from depression. Toward the end of their marriage, the Onision channel became hugely successful. The channel had reached the Top 100 Most Subscribed YouTubers list by 2010.“

so greg was beginning to take off, but his and skye’s relationship was far from perfect, and skye was depressed, probably due to the isolation from her friends and most likely family, and they “divorced” on christmas eve 2010

“On December 24, 2010 Greg announced through his Facebook fanpage that he and Skye had been separated since December 17th. That same day, he uploaded "Greg & Skye Divorced", where he says he and Skye decided to get a divorce because they are not compatible and many other reasons. He says they are still friends and he still loves her. He says he and Skye will still be living together for a while. He says he moved on because he couldn't do it anymore and he hopes she moves on too. He tells his fans to be kind to her and show support because she deserves respect. Many fans were hoping it was a joke, but soon found out it wasn't. As the news spread, it brought mixed emotions to Greg and Skye's fanbase. Most were saddened by the news and some even went as far to say they felt like their own parents were getting a divorce. This news came seemingly out of nowhere to fans, as Greg and Skye seemed to be keeping up the same energy and emotions into their videos as when they first started. Some fans even contacted Greg to tell him he was making a mistake by divorcing Skye. Greg replies in the video "Onision's Divorce Was A Mistake?" saying these fans are ignorant and he did not have a perfect marriage. He says it was sad and draining. On December 25, Greg uploaded the skit video "Demon Possessed Girl" to his main channel. The video featured him, Skye and Cyr. It was the last skit Greg uploaded with Skye. At the end of the skit he asked fans to show Skye love, she could use it due to recent hardships. During this time Greg had his friend Cyr staying at their house. Sometime after Skye had moved out of the home, Greg uploaded the video "She Betrayed Me". In the video he walks around his house as he lists items Skye and her sister have taken from the home. He heavily implies she stole over $2,000 of his items from his home when he was not there. He says he wished she had told him she was going to take items from the home beforehand and that he was still willing the follow the "agreement" they had over living arrangements and monthly payments. Text appears under him, revealing the details. "I agreed to either cover her bills in my home for 2 years, or pay her $1,000 a month for a year outside my home" Greg has since deleted the video. After uploading this video, he uploaded another video showing surveillance footage of Skye and her sister removing items through his front porch. In the video he says he will take legal action. This video has also been deleted.After Skye began receiving harassment due to Greg's videos, he uploaded "Please Leave Skye Alone", where he asked fans to stop leaving hate comments on her channel. Skye says the divorce was sudden and came out of nowhere. Greg states he threatened her with divorce for the first time in June 2010 over an argument about their possessions. He has also stated he asked for one in October and regrets not following through with it at that time. There are two main reasons Greg states as to why he divorced his first wife. One reason is that he was upset that Skye "felt entitled to 50% of his assets". He says he made it clear their relationship was not about material items. He says despite marriage being an asset split in the eyes of the law, he believed they had an agreement that "everything she acquired in her life was hers, and he in his". He says when she wanted their possessions to be split, she was showing greed and he wanted out. The other reason Greg says he divorced Skye was because she "just sat around and browsed the web". He says she began to have problems with motivation and would quit making videos with him in the middle of filming. He also says she once had a "melt down" in-front of him and his mom for no reason.”

so this is where things start to get legally sketchy, he writes HIS OWN DIVORCE AGREEMENT, and follows skye around the house screaming at her to sign it. so it wasn’t legal to begin with because it wasn’t notarized, or written by an actual lawyer, or an actual legal contract in any way, shape, or form, but then he makes skye sign it under duress, making it doubly invalid

“When talking or blogging about his ex-wife, Skye, Greg often posts the divorce contract he created. The contract is dated December 22, 2010. In the contract Greg states that he would let Skye continue to live in his house rent free until December 22, 2011, 1 year. If she moves out, he states he would pay her $1,000 a month. The contract also states, when Skye signs the papers, she forfeits all home ownership rights to Greg. Greg often brings up this contract to prove that Skye ignored her signed agreement to him. He says when she and her sister took items from him home, she stole the signed agreement, although he had already made copies. He says in the end, that made no difference. According to Greg, Skye declined the offer to continue living with him because she was still in love with him and being around him would be too painful for her. (It's worth noting Greg was planning on starting his relationship with Shiloh during this time and shortly after separating from Skye he began living with Shiloh.)According to Skye, after Greg wrote up the contract he demanded her to sign it. "He would proceed to follow me around the house for hours at a time screaming at me that if I really loved him, I would sign the paperwork, Eventually after the endless onslaught, I gave in as my spirit was quite broken." Skye says due Greg forcing her to sign the contract and the fact that it was not proper or notarized, the court determined the contract was null. Skye [pursued] Greg legally for alimony payments. For years Greg has said Skye stole from him by lying about how much money of the Onision business she was entitled to. He says he got scared and settled without stepping into a courthouse.”

non-American books wanted

EDIT: guys, thank you SO MUCH for all the recs, you are incredible! I gathered all of them and put them in this post - to see them pls scroll past the original request.

Little statistics before I get to the point: I read 30 books this year; half of them were by American authors; 1/3 were written by Poles (I read more Polish books than I expected tbh). Which leaves me with one French non-fiction book, one Russian classic, one set of stories by Chinese-American and one Mongolian 13-th century chronicle (”The secret history of Mongols” which was amazing to read btw!)

I looked then at my Goodreads “read” list and decided: that’s it. No more American authors for me next year. And it’s not that I despise American literature or anything: as in every country, there are very good and very bad books. So it’s really not as much about quality, as it is about way of story-telling and establishing story structure and simply: way of seeing the world. And I realised I won’t be getting enough diversity of that if I stay inside one - even if vast and diverse itself - country.

And besides, we are so surrounded by American mainstream media EVERY day and yet, new technologies and especially e-books allow us to reach books that were previously not possible to get in some countries, so why not use these possibilities?

So I kindly ask you to recommend me some books written by non-Americans, if you know any. They can be classics, contemporary, fantasy, YA, I don’t really care. There is only one obvious condition: they must be translated either into English or Polish or eventually German (if they don’t include a difficult kind of language).

So far I have on my list [list was included here, I deleted it bc this post got way too long as it was] Pls recommend me some more titles so I can fill this list up to 30 books! : )

Do you believe in ghosts/aliens? I’m not decided on this.

NXT Takeover Review Series: NXT Arrival

Hello, everyone, and welcome to a special new series I’m starting, beginning with this review. NXT recently celebrated 5 years under its current format, having previously been utilized as a Tuesday evening TV show showcasing select FCW stars. In its past format, NXT saw the main roster debut of such stars as Daniel Bryan, Wade Barrett, Ryback, AJ Lee, and Bray Wyatt. Since replacing FCW as the developmental territory of WWE, however, NXT has turned out a large amount of stars. A cursory look of both Raw and Smackdown’s rosters yields a great number of wrestlers who spent time in NXT. In addition, NXT has developed a reputation of being an attractive place for wrestlers to work, with a chance at making it to the main roster luring in such big indy names as ReDRagon, Adam Cole, Roderick Strong, Tommy End, and many others. And that’s just within the last year or so. NXT has truly come into its own since launching in 2012, and one can probably point to the launch of the WWE Network and subsequent live NXT Special just days after launching. Today, I’ll be going back and reviewing that very show, thus kicking off a series where I’ll be reviewing every NXT Takeover special ever done. So, without further ado, let’s get into the review!

We get a crazy little opening with the lights dimmed and mood music playing, as Triple H asks if we’re ready. He says “This is NXT,” and the show gets underway. We’re live from Full Sail University, and the fans are already hot for the show. Triple H says the next generation has arrived, as we get our opening video package. After that, it’s Sami Zayn out first for opening match. I gotta say, it’s jarring seeing him come out to something that’s not his current theme. We’re welcomed by our commentators for tonight, Byron Saxton, William Regal, and Tom Phillips with a goofy haircut. Out next is Cesaro, and we’ve got our opening match.

CESARO DEF. SAMI ZAYN BY PINFALL VIA NEUTRALIZER:

Great, great match. Cesaro was incredible as the powerhouse heel, and Sami Zayn played the role of the injured, yet determined underdog as good as anybody else. Just a fantastic match, and one where Zayn is just as well off by losing as he would by winning. **** 1/4.

Post-match, Cesaro exits the ring as Sami reflects on his loss. Halfway up the ramp, Cesaro stops, goes back into the ring, and approaches Zayn. They exchange glances for a bit, before Cesaro lifts Sami to his feet, and pulls him in for a hug. The two embrace in a show of respect, as the crowd gives their approval. Cesaro leaves, as the crowd give Sami a standing ovation and chants “Ole.” Excellent way to start off the show.

We get a vignette for future Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal winner Mojo Rawley. Out comes CJ Parker, who has recently found success in New Japan Pro Wrestling as Juice Robinson. Out next is the Hype Man himself, as we get ready for our second match:

MOJO RAWLEY DEF. CJ PARKER BY PINFALL VIA HYPERDRIVE:

Too short to really amount to much. Rawley’s probably best in small doses, anyhow. Parker actually looked pretty decent as a heel. * 1/4.

We get a vignette for Emma, and I have no idea what her gimmick is. She dances? She’s weird? She plays with bubbles? Jesus, and people call Bayley a female Eugene. We get another vignette, this one for the NXT Tag Team Champions The Ascension. Wow, those were the days. Out they come for an open challenge for their titles. Who should answer it but Scotty 2 Hotty and Grandmaster Sexay. Too Cool! I’m a little saddened that they’re using “Turn it Up,” which I consider to be the inferior Too Cool theme, but what can you do? Also, Scotty 2 Hotty’s bald, which is also kind of a dampener. It’s just not the same without his McDonald’s fries-looking hair:

THE ASCENSION DEF. TOO COOL BY PINFALL VIA FALL OF MAN TO RETAIN THE NXT TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS:

One-sided affair here, which basically served to showcase The Ascension. Not a lot to speak of, to be honest. * 1/4.

We see Paige backstage, before getting a vignette for here. Wow, to think this was only three years ago. How things have changed. She talks about being the opposite of the prototypical Diva, and what it means to be champion. I would make a joke about the Women’s Title Belt, but I’d like to think this blog is a little more dignified. We then see Ric Flair and Charlotte taking in the show from ringside, when out comes Stephanie McMahon. If a woman in WWE makes history and Stephanie McMahon isn’t there to attach herself to it, did it ever really happen? The fans chant “you still got it,” presumably towards her figure, and she proclaims she never lost it. Gag. She talks about how they’re making history by being part of the first live program on the WWE Network, and does the spiel of how she’s proud of the women’s division for showing women can do what men can do, but better. I’m all for feminism and everything, but I think it would be a little more meaningful if we got to hear Paige or Emma say this kind of thing. Oh, well. She introduces the two competitors as the next generation of WWE Divas, and Emma comes out to her awful, awful theme. She got this opportunity in a “dance battle,” which kind of reflects poorly on how the women are being regarded. William Regal is seen dancing to her music, and they mention she’s beaten two former Divas since becoming #1 Contender. To think she’d be released just 5 months later for stealing an IPad case. I mean, they brought her back, but she’s really done a whole lot of nothing the last three years. Out next is the champion, Paige. Stephanie shakes the hands of both competitors, as this match gets underway:

PAIGE DEF. EMMA BY SUBMISSION VIA SCORPION CROSSLOCK TO RETAIN THE NXT WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP:

OK Women’s match that at least had the crowd’s attention the whole time. I personally found this to be largely dull, with Emma dominating a good portion of the match. There were some cool moments, such as Emma hitting a Powerbomb on Paige, or Paige breaking out the Scorpion Crosslock for the win, but it falls below most NXT Women’s Title match standards, and probably some of AJ Lee’s title matches on the main roster, as well. **.

Post-match, the two briefly hug it out, as Paige celebrates her successful title defense. We cut backstage to Adrian Neville preparing for the main event, a ladder match for the NXT Championship held by Bo Dallas. What a time that was. We get a video package around Neville, and I really have to commend them for going out of their way to introduce newer viewers to the stars of NXT, a must with the launch of the WWE Network. It’s no wonder NXT caught on the way it did after it was given a platform like this.

After a commercial for the NXT TV show, the camera cuts to Pat Patterson and Dusty Rhodes watching in the crowd. The “Somebody Call My Momma” music plays, as Xavier Woods comes out. That used to be his theme?! Out next is Tyler Breeze, as I guess we’re getting a cooldown match before the main event:

TYLER BREEZE VS. XAVIER WOODS WENT TO A NO CONTEST WHEN ALEXANDER RUSEV INTERFERED:

Well, so much for that. Rusev comes out, beats the shit out of both guys, and puts Woods in the Accolade, as Lana puts Rusev over. Her accent definitely improved over time. Rusev then gets on the mic and cuts a promo in Bulgarian and poses as his music hits.

We then see Bo Dallas backstage preparing for the main event. They play a video package for Dallas, and, say what you will about him, the man has a great sense of humor. I’ve even enjoyed seeing him as part of the Miztourage. Cut back to the audience as we see Larry Zbyszko and Steve Keirn watching from ringside. The star power’s sort of hitting a point of diminishing returns right now. We then get a video package for how the ladder match came to be, before cutting back to the ring, lights dimmed and ladders all over the place. Out comes Shawn Michaels, NXT Title belt in hand, as he heads to the ring. Michaels cuts a promo saying he’s proud to be here tonight, as the fans chant stuff like “one more match” and “H-B-Shizzle.” I don’t even know. Michaels finally has to ask them to stop, as he talks about his history with ladder matches, as he plugs his Mr. Wrestlemania DVD and talks about how he has to put his kids through college. Michaels finally gets serious, as he puts over both men in the main event, and says only one of them will walk out with the title and step into greatness. Adrian Neville’s music hits, and out comes the challenger to a nice ovation. Out next is Bo Dallas, as we get formal introductions. As the title is raised both men stare each other down, as our main event is underway:

ADRIAN NEVILLE DEF. BO DALLAS IN A LADDER MATCH TO WIN THE NXT CHAMPIONSHIP:

Very fun, well-paced work between these two. I’ve never seen Bo work quite the way he did in this match, as he did everything he could to wear Neville down and stop him from getting to the title above the ring. This match didn’t really have a whole lot that you’ve never seen in a Ladder Match before, but it served as an entertaining, satisfying main event match. *** 1/2.

Post-match, Neville celebrates atop the ladder with the title, as steam comes down from the ceiling. He continues to celebrate, as John Cena is shown in the crowd, giving Neville a standing ovation. Arrival goes off the air, as the announcers tell us this is a new beginning for NXT.

OVERALL THOUGHTS:

I’m really not sure how to precisely describe this show. As someone who’s seen most of the Takeover specials over the last few years, this felt a bit different from how those feel. The pacing wasn’t all there. Not every match felt like it was one of consequence. Obviously, the talent pool shifted to one that featured more experienced wrestlers from across the world. As a first taste of NXT, however, this wasn’t all that bad. Both the opener and main event delivered in their own ways, and I would actually recommend going out of your way to watch the opener, by all means. Everything else in between ranges from passable to skippable. Overall, I’d give it a mild recommendation, with a strong suggestion to watch the opener, main event, and perhaps the Women’s match as well. Everything else is better off being passed over.

Well, that’s the first installment of what I hope will be a very rewarding series. In addition to reviewing more NXT specials, I’m also looking at a few other ideas for posts, so I’ll probably put something up within the next week or so detailing exactly what I intend to review over the next few months. BOY OH BOY OH BOY

What a week! I haven’t blogged in literally a week D; Been SO BUSY. Foreal. It’s the last week till the NCLEX (today) so I was really putting this aside. But anywho, gonna try my best to remember what I did, so I’m gonna list it out in this one post, and then maybe post pics along with this or also make an additional post of pics. We’ll see!

Today mom and I had Leo’s before she dropped me off to the school. It was nice to enjoy breakfast together! She had chicken noodle soup and coffee, while I had a breakfast special #1 without hash browns, and coffee. I studied in the library! After school mom, Marv, manang and I stopped by Michael’s on the hill so that Marv could buy some watercolor pencils. Manang also bought guache paint so we’re excited to try that out!

2.26.19 - Tuesday

Studied in the tech building this time since there were finally empty spots! Lol Then after having lunch in the cafeteria, I went to the library and worked there. Got picked up and mom was in pain from muscle knots and cramps (most likely from working out with the dumbbell). After picking up Manang we went to ne's. Once we got there I went to the guest room and napped! Lol first time I napped in a long time. Left her house around 9 pm

2.27.19 - Wednesday

Studied in the library today! After that, manong picked up the sibs and I, me being last. Stopped by Fairlane so manang could pick up her jacket order. Had dinner 4/$4 from Wendy’s (courtesy of manong! :)) and headed home

2.28.19 - Thursday

Stayed home today! Dad missed us cuz he worked from Mon-Thurs. Ate breakfast with manong, mom and dad which was a very juicy and tender pan-fried breadcrumb-coated pork tenderloin. So good! Did dad’s pedi, prepped his shake and uniform, and then finally worked on studying... feeling anxious :( Oh! Manang showed me that Rainbow City Roller Rink has been changed now with a new art exhibit: The Beach Detroit! SOOOOOO COOL! Opens tomorrow!

3.1.19 - Friday

Got up late today =_= Watched some Chinese youtube videos with manong of this girl who farms and makes stuff --- so soothing! After that the fam got ready for our dinner with tito Boyet and tita Belle. Picked up Marv from work then made our way to Sapporo Sushi in Troy. Got there at the same time as tita Belle. Ordered our food and then tito Boyet came. I got 3 sushi: 2 california and one philly, and then a bowl of Tempura udon. It was sooooo good!!! So thankful. Tito Boyet and tita belle treated us out... although it was supposed to be for mom and dad’s anniversary >.< After that we went to church for prayer meeting! Went to bed at 12 a.m. because NCLEX tomorrow!

3.2.19 - NCLEX DAY

Had a lot of alarms go off today but I was able to get up at 6 a.m. Freshened up, changed, put on some makeup, then hurried and brewed some coffee, made oatmeal, and toasted a bagel and put cream cheese on it. Manong and manang came with dad and I. Manang prayed then left the house at 6:45 and made it to Ann Arbor at 7:22. Dad prayed and then manang walked me into the building to the pearson door. Checked in and then started the exam. This time I only did 151 questions (+10 for the research thang) and finished at 10:30. I’m happy I didn’t have to do all 265 questions but as of now (it’s 12:07 a.m. so technically 3.3.19) I still didn’t get any email.... like Danielle did.. Kinda worried although I feel more confident this time around. Got picked up and manang got me a lunchables and we went home. I washed off my makeup and brushed my teeth then took a nap till 1:30 p.m. Got up and ate sinigang. Then manong and I packed up the TV because we decided to return it (sorry vizio!). Marv and manang washed dishes and then manong and I cleaned the back of the pilot and marv and him put the tv in the trunk. Got ready then the fam took manong’s car and the pilot and we went to Target to return the tv. Walked around the mall + best buy. Then mom and dad went to Meijer while the sibs and I stopped by starbucks drive thru and then picked up hot n ready pizzas before going home. Got home and discovered we needed a bigger stand so mom, dad, manang and I went to Target (near ne’s) and then home goods, then walmart for coffee. Got home, played jackbox tv 4 with manang and Marv and then now i’m here lol. So tired!! Really praying i passed the nclex this time.... i hope and pray I did. I’m committing it to God. I really don’t know what I’d do if I did fail again... sigh. Praying for the best!!!! <3
