Even after years, the beasts may start another fight. That's why we must always be ready until that time comes.
[Below this text are their recent to old concept sketches bc I feel like sharing it too :p]
FIRST OF ALL, HONESTLY...... I'm still unsure on how they both would looked like đđ Though I'm quite proud with the art on the top of the blog, but I still feel like I can add more to their design while still thinking with the colors aha-
Anyway, since I've been thinking of more concepts with my AU, I feel like I'm getting closer to how I wanted the story would went, and with how my ocs would looked like in the story. But for now, I will just show you these pretty recent to old (like some years ago aha-) of the Two Dragons sketches đ„đ„đ„

I'm unsure when I would draw Astaroth's non-dragon version, but he would use an outfit that is inspired by Hanfu Robes with hidden Rope Dart as his main weapon :]
And Rhys... Idk what I'm doing with his design nor really think about how he will looked like haha so uhh I just slaps and combining both outfits he wore and calls it a day đ„đ„đ„
[Explaining this one based of my Sky AU] How to tell it... Hmm well actually, since both in-game and in my AU are more focused with Light rather than Darkness, I just think that they literally have different beliefs and styles that are not or cannot be seen by us, as they are not allowed to interact with each other. So I decided to make new whole outfits, cultures, use of magics, creatures, etc. To make differences for Darkness with Light, well at least in my AU :p

I need a break
Shangqi x Reader (Platonic)Â
A/N: I feel like Iâm loosing steam towards the end of my placement and wow I have never needed a break this badly before. Perhaps a short Shangqi x Reader imagine where they are both University students. Seriously at this rate Iâll just be solely a Shangqi writer HAHAHA. Doing this on my phone because I donât want to open my work computer. Letâs see where this impromptu idea takes me to. Hope you enjoy it and as always like and comment if you wish!
Genre: PG-13
Warnings: None really, just friends supporting each other! I guess thereâs an inaccurate timeline if you look at the MCU but hey this is an imagine plus if you look at some of the wiki pages, Shangqi is actually born in 1998/1999. So appreciate if youâre kind enough to go with the flow to read this comfort fic!Â
âY/N!â Shangqi rushes to catch up with you after class. You made an effort to conceal your tiredness but he saw it right through. âGoshâŠyou alright?â
You think to yourself. Were you really alright? The answer was pretty obvious. You were ten weeks into your placement and your emotions were a jumbled up mess. Having to deal with work responsibilities was one problem, school assignments were another issue all together. At this point, you felt like you were just getting through each week for the sake of it.
At first, you believed that what you were going through was simply a transition to becoming an adult. You thought that naturally, you would be able to persevere through the stressful periods by yourself. But of course, it has been hard.
You were a social work intern at a neighborhood youth centre, thirty minutes away if you took the train and bus. The work was fulfilling in itâs own ways, but recently there were self-doubts filling your brain, if you were really cut out for the job in the future. If you werenât, what else could you do?
As you sat with Shangqi in the schoolâs student-ran cafe, you found yourself pouring out the exact same concerns to him. Credit to him, Shangqi never interrupted your monologue, he just simply listened. Thatâs what best friends were for. Thatâs what you did for him to when he ran into issues with his family.
Even then, he couldnât deny that hearing you doubt yourself broke his heart. He had known you since high school. You mostly kept to yourself and one or two close friends. Despite joining the schoolâs athletic team where you were one of the main athletes, you preferred to stay in the shadows unlike some of your teammates. That didnât stop you from going out of your way to help other students in need; like helping the girl who was in an arm cast to copy the social studies notes, even if it meant you had to do it twice. Or maybe just talking to a friend who was stressed out about their results.
Basically, you had studied your ass off to get a secured spot at this university who were only one of the few that offered the degree. He remembers you telling him the moment you got your offer, âIâm finally good at something. I donât have to worry anymore!â
Shangqi wasnât stupid. The pandemic had done some crazy things. And by crazy, it affected the self-esteem that you had been working so hard on by participating in various projects and events, with you being in charge of a drama production that was promoting on mental health. That was a big deal considering that you were a major introvert.
Online engagement was never easy. In fact he has heard some of your struggles that youâve shared with him regarding this and it only makes him admire you even more. For someone who preferred to keep to themselves, stepping out of oneâs comfort zone, to take on a role that wasnât just simply about helping people - that took guts.
âIâm sorry Iâm just loading you with all this. I just feelâŠâ You trailed off, suddenly becoming emotional again. Again, Shangqi does not pry. âThat I canât do anything right.â You emphasize that you had ended the statement for you were unsure that you could keep your cool if you had tried to continue on.
âIf I hear you saying sorry another time,â he chides, âyouâre paying for our meal later.â Your lips curved upwards slightly before returning to its somber position. Shangqi decides that a meal wonât cut it. He needs to deploy âOperation Y/Nâ. Standing up with your buzzer to collect the food, Shangqi whips out his phone. There will be a few changes for today.
Food was definitely a cure in this situation, but it was only a part of the solution. After inhaling your ramen at light speed, Shangqi tells you that today will be a different Friday. âAnd you canât complain! Itâll be a weekend tmr,â he tells you. So why not? You figured that even if you went back home early, your head wouldnât be in the right place to complete the essay for your English module.
âHold up! The VR studio that Katy was talking about?â You look at the tickets inside the taxi that was taking you and Shangqi to the location. âHow did you even, it was so hard to get these tickets!â From the time Shangqi met you outside the classroom, he had yet to see you so ecstatic. Until now.
âWell,â Shangqi gives his best shrug. âI called in a favor from a friend. Said that it was for emergency purposes.â He raised his fingers to make connotations in the air much to your amusement.
âWow⊠just how much do I not know about you Mr Popular?â You teased. Shangqi decides to leave the fact on him having to persuade the Wakandan Princess in giving him free tickets.
âPlease! I swear whatever you want me to do, Iâll do it! Itâs for Y/N!â
âEy well why didnât you say so? If itâs for that nice friend, of course!â Shuri leaves the entrance of the compound, an exasperated Shangqi trailing behind.
Yeah, the VR studio that Katy told them about was also funded by King TâChalla himself. With stunning life like visuals thanks to Wakandan technology, the VR studio was located in a middle class neighborhood. TâChalla believed that no matter where kids came from, they should have the right to enjoy and to explore the world. For now, he wasnât ready to share that he was on the way on becoming a full-fledged Avenger yet - you just had too much on your plate. Heâll just have to settle with this white lie.
âIs Katy coming?â You were on the verge of vibrating off your seat. âShe would love this place!â Even when you were struggling, Y/N still manages to think about other people. Today, Y/N will put her needs first.
As if to answer your previous question, you can see an equally excited Katy waiting for the two of you at the roundabout. âHEL-LO EVERYONE! LETâS GET OUR FRIDAY STARTED IN PROPER SHALL WE?â Her loud voice had attracted stares, some very displeased looks too but at this point in time, you didnât give a damn. Katy was right, it was time to enjoy!
You wished that you could slow down time, or even replay it continuously when you needed cheering up because the only thing you felt was pure happiness - euphoria even. Your stomach was in knots for laughing hysterically together with Katy when Shangqi jumped in shock from a surprise scare from a zombie. âIâm keeping that for leverage,â she tells you, quietly slipping her phone into her fanny pack.Â
The Wakandans had really outdone themselves this time. Your favorite VR was the paradise VR. Slipping the headgear, you say goodbye to the smiles of Katy and Shangqi, whisking away to a beach that oddly reminded you of your dream destination - Hawaii. From where you were standing, you were surrounded by green and majestic islands. Despite their sheer size, you werenât intimidated. In fact, you were healing.Â
Your mind was no longer in the room of the VR studio. How could it when the sun kissed your skin, giving you the much needed energy that you were lacking for so long? In the room, the two sees you kick your shoes to the side, going barefoot. It may have seem strange, but with the monitor beside you, your actions were perfectly logical.Â
As a kid, you used to despise the prickly feeling of sand in between your toes. But now, you grew to love the sensation that each grain of sand had on your skin. It made you feel grounded, that everything was going to be ok. You raise your virtual hand to touch your face - were you crying?Â
âShe must have been really stressed huh?â Katy whispers to Shangqi who nods in return. How he hated the fact that you were giving so much to your work but still felt underappreciated. Forget the Avengers with superhuman abilities, you were the true MVP. The VR ends and you remove your headgear. âIâm ok,â you automatically reassure them despite the dry tears left on both cheeks. You step down the platform slowly, trying to regain sense of the real world.Â
What you didnât expect was the two embracing you in a hug, squishing you in between them. Maybe that had set off the waterworks. For someone like Katy, she had sage advice.
âLife can be pretty shitty right? But Iâm so proud of you fighting it Y/N. Just remember that itâs ok to be weak. I mean, Iâve seen worse from Shangqi,â she jabs her finger towards his direction, earning a glare from him. Thatâs Katy, always trying to add a bit of humor to this grey world. Calming down, you let go of the both of them. âThanks guys, for everything.âÂ
âHey,â Shangqi responds, slinging his arm over your shoulder. âWeâre friends, so we donât leave each other behind.â Phone beeping, he retrieves it to check the message. âAnd look at that, nice timing. Who wants Korean BBQ?âÂ
Trailing behind them, you get an amusing view of Shangqi bickering with Katy on how many Soju bottles sheâs allowed to order later. As San Francisco welcomed the night, you were just thankful that you had the two of them to walk through this crazy maze called life.Â
âLast one to the shop is paying!âÂ
âOh youâre on Mister!â Â
A/N: I really just think that this was also an imagine for me to cope too. So I can only hope to finish my placement/assignments/exams well! To anyone who does studies and work simultaneously, I fucking respect you (allow me to use expletives for now, these people deserve the respect). If youâre going through a stressful time, I hope this brings the slightest comfort for you and remember⊠YOU ARE NOT ALONE! Again, thank you for reading!Â

Charlie has been working on this album more than a year , esp this song means a lot to him ! Oh my baby was so nervous earlier today at 12:14 am on an Instagram live !He was talking about Girlfriend , he said he loves this song more than anything . He said he lost sleep , almost like the same way for How Long , Attention , some how One Call Away , cause they were all in different sounds and production.
Iâm so excited about this song . Itâs like seeing him this happy makes me want to hear this song more and more . Charlieâs heart is so big and beautiful . I really want to hear his story . I know heâs going to talk about his feelings and all the motions he had/ has for a special girl or girls. He writes for people at the end of the day . He makes music for people so that they could relate to it . I love this boy more than anything in the universe . This is why I always say I canât find a specific word to describe Charlie so I name a word after his name âcharlieâ . so it means all the most beautiful and evergreen words in the whole universe . I canât explain how much I love him . For me Charlie is a familiar face . The one I can imagine and never think as a celebrity . Like my best friend and even more than that! I have respect and love for him . It kills me to see people bothering him or leaking his songs . If they knew how much it means to him , how much it would break his little beautiful heart , I bet they wouldnât so it . So Girlfriend is going to be out on every platform on June 25 th , donât know why they have actually moved the date to 25th cause first it was about to be dropped on Wednesday , June 24th . Anyway . He is so damn excited about this song . He went live on Instagram just to talk about the song and the emotions he has for this song . He was emotional kinda and so I was . I cried . He was nervous . He was also playing with his hair . Another reason for why Iâm this excited which I want to jump at 2:31 pm PST , itâs because Charlieâs gonna be back to himself . Heâs not bald anymore or mysterious . He is ok . He feels like himself and thatâs what I want to see . I mean those three triology songs which he put out last year were great . I have nothing bad or less respectful to say about them but here is a point , from the first time I heard IWM - I love this song bad , really really bad - I could tell something is missing . I mean the production was awesome , the beats , the bee sounds , basketball sounds , but something was missing , you could say that this was not completely Charlie . Also he liked my tweet that I pointed out how broken hearted he was actually and really broke my heart. Also Mother the second out of the triology , Mother production was great too , also ChadSmith on Redhotchillipeppers played drum on it , Andrew Watt also played the acoustic guitar on it , it wa so collaborative . A lot of people in a room with Charlie working on a song , thatâs what I call it a little bit not Charlie . He loves collaborations because that way he learns more but at the end of the day , it should be him making his own song and write the lyrics with Jkash . Jkash helps Charlie to gather his thoughts in a better framed way and put them into a lyrics . They work together and really their job is always great. I was saying at the end of the day from the begging , Charlie is himself a whole band . He is a one band man . He produces all his records , he is perfectionist , he doesnât really needs anyone to help or produce the record for him . He has a perfect pitch so he knows whatâs he doing . He knows all kinds of computer programs , all the keyboards , he knows all the sounds . He has crazy ears . So he really doesnât need anybody . Mother was perfect , although the lyrics was so tough and intense which made his heart beat faster everytime he was taking about the message behind it . Charlie hides his emotions and his messages in the melodies and chord changes. He is a super genius . He is too shy tho , introvert . He really doesnât like to talk about himself a lot but he loves to share his stories with people . He wants people to know that if theyâre going through something thatâs fine . He is a human too and he goes through the same things as normal people do . He wants people to get the message without even understing the lyrics , like if you doesnât even know English , thatâs fine , the melody is talking to you . You can find the message in the melody .
He wants people to relate to his songs . Mother first came out to be more of a hypothetical song , about his high school experiences , but as we all do know that didnât make any sense , cause that wasnât really Charlieâs perspective . He would never write lyrics about this kinda superficial stuff , so he knew this wasnât making any sense , so he tweeted heâs not gonna lie and he going to tell us the truth . It came out to be the song was about a very toxic relationship which he was at . The boy [My Friend ] -Charlie- and the girl were always having fight , tearing each other , but from the motherâs point of view everything was different and alright . If only she knew what they were actually going through she would completely change her mind . He got really emotional and was sweating everytime he talked about that . Also I Warned myself was about a vicious cycle of going back to someone that you know theyâre not good for you anymore but you keep going back to them even if you donât want or do want to. Those brothers [I Warned Myself and Mother ] were awesome in every details but not really Charlieâs sound of music . They had their uniqueness but something was missing ; Jazz! I myself have a great amount of love for those two brothers . Now itâs the time to talk about the singke announcement ! âI know I said goodbye and baby you said it too but when I touch her I feel like Iâm cheating on you â - which leads us to Cheating On You - the third out of the three . This baby song was so different . Also the music video was so intense and hard to take . I remember I cried to the whole video. On October 1st , 2019 Charlie dropped Cheating On You music video and he went live before and after that . This song was also written by him and Jkash . I can say Cheating On You was more of Charlieâs sounds , the beats , background music , they were more like Charlie . But I donât know the reason why they had to choose Mother as a lead new single , it was totally obvious that people loved Cheating On You more .He performed Cheating On You at Rock In Rio and gave a little speech right before singing the song , started it from asking this question âWho is with the person they love tonight ?â. When you just start watching the music video you could see that this appears on the screen âThis song is not about a person . Itâs about a feeling Iâve never had.âwhich makes me believe the opposite meaning not the outside opinion of this title . So complicated it was and so is Charlieâs mind . The lyrics seemed so intense and still is one of the best I could hear from Charlie . He loved âI know I said goodbye and baby you said it too , but when I touch her I feel like Iâm cheating on you â and pointed it out as his favourite lyrics he ever written . The music video was taken in NewYork , the time in September were Charlie want feeling great and you can see he never plays in music videos , he is always himself . From a broken hearted lover in Attention to a cheater , funny cute innocent guy in How Long has this been going on ! He want feeling good and you could tell by the way of his look . His beautiful green eyes always tells the truth . âI said goodbye , you said goodbye â.and he ...!
And now weâre about to hear Girlfriend , gonna say this song already warns me , itâs not like what it seems , maybe Charlie is more of a broken hearted this time but he is keeping it cool . All I know that heâs totally feeling like himself and is so happy HAPPY for this song . The first singke of the new album . I have to wait for it . Really am so excited and canât contain my happiness about for this song .
ps1: I love Charlie more than everything in my whole Charlie life !
ps2: thanks for your attention , I know you donât want my heart.
ps3: I canât sleep and I have an exam tmr .
ps4: Canât wait .

Before I continue I must say: excuse the awful graphic. Lmao. Anyway! Iâve realised that I have never done a Follow Forever or anything like this in my life?? So I decided that now I should hop on the bandwagon and spread some of the love. Not because Iâve reached a follower milestone but so I can give you all a quick thanks for putting up with me really. I know I have never been the best in replying to drafts at a reasonable speed, that I ramble too much and take twenty-odd years to reply to a single message and yet you guys still talk, follow me and want to interact with me and my muses? Honestly, Iâm blessed. :â) Just know I love you all and wish you the Happiest of New Years. Alright letâs go --
SOME SPECIAL MENTIONS:
⌠@floiresâ ;; Becky, oh Becky. Youâre my sister so I guess you have to be on top of this list?? lmao. You donât realise what an amazing writer you are. Like so good that Tumblr made us both unfollow each other? Like what was that all about? Haha! We have stupid arguments over nothing and over everything but know that I love you regardless of those. We need to write together also! Your muses are the cutest and I could honestly go on forever but I donât want to make your head bigger than it already is. Youâre the best sister anyone could ever ask for or want etc etc and no matter the idiotic things that leave my mouth sometimes, you just so happen to be one of my favourite people on this planet. Ew, Iâm getting cheesy now. How gross is that. And one day I will persuade you with my almighty powers to edit a theme because you always end up making the finished product so good and like SHARE YOUR TALENT PLEASE.  ALSO THIS IS RANDOM BUT JUST KNOW YOU CAN SING GREAT. (If you E V E R say you sound like Celine Dion though...I may just start laughing. You know exactly what Iâm talking about here.) Never change for anyone or anything and I sincerely hope that 2019 is kind to us because 2018 was the most Evil. And besides, 2018 was so last year lmfao. All my love to you sis. P.S: you smell. xx
⌠@brokenbcysâ  âŒÂ  @dreamxcatchcrâ ;; Emma and Dani! Iâve put you both here because I know Iâll end up repeating myself lmao. Where do I start with you both? Youâre two of the best friends anyone could ever ask for; both on the internet and in real life. Youâve been there for me for so many years and you know -- I think this year it will be like...9 or 10 years since weâve been friends? Thatâs gone so fast! Weâve had many laughs together and honestly I never would have survived the hell that is school if it werenât for you two. Thanks for putting up with me when I take ten years to reply to a simple message dkjlsdgsd. And I also love how no matter which characters we throw at each other, they all end up being bezzie mates. I have such a good writing chemistry with you two itâs just so easy :â) Our friendship must have been reflected on our characters haha. Weâve been in some hilarious RPs together though -- like the twins one! Our TMR RP (groupc) will always be one of my favourite rps (Not because we ran it pfft) because Iâll always treasure our Glader Trio. One day I will persuade you both to watch all of AOS and not just the first episode hehe. Hereâs to many more years of friendship! I love you both sm and I know I can come to you about anything and yeah :-) xx
⌠@wckdfortressxâ ;; Hannah! I know youâre not really on the RP scene anymore but I couldnât do a Follow Forever without including you! Weâve been friends for goodness knows how long now -- itâs definitely been a good few years. And I love that you love Agents of SHIELD as much as I do :â) AND ULTIMATES IS THIS YEAR!!! So the fact I might finally get the chance to meet you irl is so exciting! Youâre a lovely person and youâre always fun to talk to even if I take a billion years to reply to a simple message lmao. Iâve always loved every single one of your characters and I think youâre an amazing writer. And if you ever decide to return to RP know that Iâm always willing to throw any and every one of my muses at you. <33 Youâre an awesome person and I hope this year treats you well!
âŒÂ @ravenousdiasterâ ;; Your URL popped up before I even typed ârâ! I think Tumblr knows how much I lav you hehe. :â) Iâm so happy that we started writing together! I always get so happy when I see youâve replied to a thing or tagged me in something. And we can spend ages and ages just headcanoning and itâs beautiful <3 Youâre an absolute pleasure to write with and Dougie/Dahlia are precious babies who I love sososooo much. We love putting them through Shit because we are angst fiends ;) but I wouldnât have it any other way because Iâm terrible. I always love when I see I have a message from you and youâre so lovely to talk to OOC as well. Thank you for being you and carry on being your amazing self. I lav youuu. <3
âŒÂ @strawberryxwritesâ ;; You have legit got to be one of the most patient people I know, omg. When I always take a lifetime to reply to a single message or poof randomly in the middle of a conversation, youâre still more than happy to have a chat and??? I am ever so grateful for that. I know I can be a pain in the arse when it comes to reply speeds but Iâm so glad to have the chance to write with you :) I love your characters dearly and I love writing our threads as well. I hope you have a fab year in general and just know I enjoy writing with you and talking to you and thanks so much for your awesome self and wanting to write with me.
âŒÂ @valplumâ ;; Every time you reply to our thread or I see you on the dash I am honestly just???? floored by your writing because itâs just beautiful and HOW DO YOU ENGLISH??? Every time I have a notification from you Iâm like !!!!!!! I know Iâve had trouble with my muse for Logan recently but know that I love Logan and Bardot so much and Iâm also excited to write with your other muses at some point to :) And youâre such a wonderful person to talk to Iâm <3 I donât know how to English so just know I love you okay â„
⌠@heroxwithxdreamsâ ;; remember that time we tried plotting and I ended up completely forgetting to reply to the message? ahh. Iâm so happy that the second time around worked out. Because I always did want to reach out because I thought âahh they seem so nice! Iâd love to write with themâ and then I got lucky :) Youâre so sweet to talk to even if we havenât spoke for a while but I know thatâs because youâve had a break from Tumblr which I completely understand since Iâm technically Iâm on a semi hiatus haha! but just know when youâre back Iâm ready to love you. <3
⌠@faerietaledâ ;; My motivational fairy! Iâm so sorry I tend to forget to reply to my messages ah but you always seem to appear in my messages at just the right time :) Whenever Iâm not feeling so great or stuck in a pickle you always reach out and say hey. Honestly you have no idea how much that means to me. <3 The fact you take some time out of your day and listen to my rambles; youâre an awesome bean. I hope this year treats you brilliantly because you deserve nothing less than the best. â„
THE REST OF THE BEST:
Whether youâve been following me for months or for hours, whether weâve written 500 threads together or only one or even not at all yet, whether weâve spoke to each other or havenât interacted yet, thank you all for ever giving me a second glance, for being so patient and understanding when I forget to reply to messages or my snailâs pace of reply speeds. Youâre all such lovely people and without you my indie rping experience wouldnât be what itâs like today :) Thanks for lighting up my dashboard with your greatness every day! Keep on doing you and know that if you ever need anything Iâm here for you. And if you ever wanna start a new thing then I would be completely down with that!! Happy New Year! xx
âŒÂ @domuslux âŒÂ @finalisms âŒÂ @heartonanoose ⌠@merryxchaos âŒÂ @ferociousrex âŒÂ @disapprcve âŒÂ @inechoingsilence âŒÂ @thefangedman âŒÂ @ofbookshelves âŒÂ @ofxmuse âŒÂ @caringspirit âŒÂ @evcrlasting âŒÂ @mnemxsyne-writes âŒÂ @darkwinterwinds âŒÂ @dramaqxeenbitch âŒÂ @thexnyctophiliacs âŒÂ @the-red-red-rose âŒÂ @anatcmies âŒÂ @swordsandmagic âŒÂ @kingxfmischief âŒÂ @pseudonyist âŒÂ @poignantisms âŒÂ @novusorbus âŒÂ @futureofnothing âŒÂ @svimmingfools âŒÂ @shewritcsx âŒÂ @ofstrangevariety âŒÂ @lavenderrpages âŒÂ @cheapxseats âŒÂ @scinglives âŒÂ Â
(If Iâve missed you please do not take offence and know it was not my intention. My brain never remembers to reply to my messages let alone remember everyone for my first follow forever. I donât love you any less so please donât think that. )

Five - You Are In Love
It only took me 6 months to write a new chapter orz
âDo you want to go see that movie tomorrow?â
âThe action one?â
âYou donât even know its name.â
He laughs at the accusatory tone in his friendâs voice. âIâm not very caught up on whatâs showing.â
âFine. So, wanna go?â
âSure.â Shirabu rolls over onto his stomach, fingering the edge of his blanket. âLet me know the time, Iâll be there.â
âIâll check the timing and let you know.â
âSure. See you then.â
The line clicks off after Iwaizumi says his goodbyes, and even after Shirabu sets his phone down, he canât stop grinning.
He grabs his pillow to hide his smile in it, but it doesnât work very well, and he ends up grabbing his phone again. He crosses and uncrosses his ankles as he composes a new text, making too many errors in his hurry.
[Kenjirou]: GUESS WHOS GOING TO A MOVIE WITH IWA-SAN TMR
His phone buzzes with a reply almost immediately, and he grins.
[Taichi]: oh, i coulfnt possibly guess
The sarcastic reply doesnât deter him.
[Kenjirou]: Yeah, yeah, youâre salty I get it
[Taichi]: i m so much closer 2 getting a bf than u r
[Kenjirou]: lies
[Taichi]: only truths
[Kenjirou]: Forgive me if I donât trust you
[Taichi]: u trusted me? when?
[Kenjirou]: asshat
[Taichi]: douchenugget
[Kenjirou]: I hate you and your tall ass
[Taichi]: my ass isnt tall, the rest of me is
[Kenjirou]: Spectacular. Like I needed to know that
[Taichi]: o I kno im spectacular.
[Kenjirou]: goodbye
[Taichi]: guees who else thinks im spectacular
[Kenjirou]: Not interested in ur love life
[Taichi]: but u want deets on my sex life n im happy 2 oblige
[Kenjirou]: NO THANKS
Shirabu is about to throw his phone across the room when it starts vibrating, and he curses the name on his screen.
âTaichi, no.â
âTaichi, yes.â His best friend snickers, and Shirabu collapses onto his pillow, groaning.
âSo as I was saying, I am this much closer to getting a boyfriend than you are.â
âNo one said Iâm not making progress.â Shirabu mumbles to his pillow.
âThat pretty much confirms that youâre not.â
âLook here, Iâm tryingââ
âTry harder.â
âOi, not all of us are like you.â
âHmm, I suppose I could share some of my charm with you.â
âEw. Go back to the bin you came from.â
âRude.â
âOnly the best for you,â he croons, and laughs at the dry retching from the other end of the line.
The door creaks open, and he tosses a careless Welcome back over his shoulder, half-listening to Kawanishiâs semi-serious cursing.
âIs that Taichi?â An amused voice asks, and Shirabu doesnât bother to glance up before putting his friend on speaker.
ââyou are absolutely hopeless and I hope you never get together with someone, for the sake of their sanityââ
Semi bursts into laughter, and the voice on the other end comes to an abrupt halt.
âKenjirou, Iâm going to kill you. Stop putting me on speaker.â
âCome to Tokyo and fight me, I dare you.â
âIâll book a ticket right now, see if I donâtââ
âMmhmm. Iâll let you know if the part of me that cares comes back from war.â
âYou suck.â
âNo more than you do.â
âOn the contrary, I probably get a lot more sucking action than you doââ
Shirabu chokes and promptly turns the speaker off while Semi howls with laughter.
-----
Semi has entered and left the room three different times, two hours have passed, and Shirabu is still on the phone.
He never thought Kawanishi had it in him to talk for that long.
Heâs settling down with a book when he hears ââyeah, of course Iâll tell you all about it. And send you spoilers.â
A pause, and a burst of laughter, possibly at Kawanishi's indignation. âYou do it to me all the time, asshole. Itâs about time I got payback.
âMmhmm. Right. I do no such thing, stop spreading lies about me.â
Semi begins to think that he should just listen in instead of reading. Shirabu and Kawanishiâs conversations are more amusing than a soap opera, and infinitely more interesting than his book.
âWhatever. Iâm going to shower, my phoneâs burning my ear off. Mm. Right. Bye.â
Shirabu tosses the phone aside and collapses on his pillow, and Semi tries very hard to immerse himself in his book.
(He gets called out anyway.)
âHow long were you actually listening to us talk?â
Semi glances up, but Shirabu isnât looking at him. It looks like heâs trying to suffocate himself with the pillow, and Semi wonders what brought that on. âIs that really a question? I walked in and out thrice and you were on the phone for two hours.â
âHnn.â His roommate rolls over, removing himself from the possibility of suffocation, and regards him with his head on his hand. âSo how much did you hear?â
âDo I look like I would really remember everything that you two were talking aboutââ
âBadly phrased question.â Shirabu cuts him off with a wave of his free hand. âHow nosy do you want to be, before I forget whatever Taichi said?â
âWhy, thank you for thinking of me and including me in the sharing of your deep, dark secrets.â
âBye.â Shirabu rolls off the bed and heads for his dresser, while Semi snickers behind him.
âOkay, okay, I was kidding. I was curious about one thing.â
Shirabu looks up from a half-closed drawer, raising an eyebrow at him to continue.
âYouâre watching a movie sometime?â
âOh, yeah.â A hint of a smile tilts Shirabuâs lips up, right before he schools his face back into neutrality. âTomorrow. Not sure what time yet.â
âOh, nice. Have fun.â He smiles.
âWhy do you want to know?â
âYou said I could be nosy.â
âYouâre never nosy without reason,â Shirabu counters, walking back to perch on the edge of his bed, his toiletries balanced on his knees. âWhat is it?â
âNothing,â Semi protests. âCan I not be curious about what 'spoilers' might mean without a reason?â
âNo.â
âSuck it up then. Thereâs no other reason.â
âYouâre such a pain.â
âLook whoâs talking.â
âUgh.â Shirabu heads towards the room door. âBye.â
âIâll still be here when you get back, you know.â
âEw. Donât remind me.â
Semi laughs a little as the door clicks shut behind him, putting their conversation out of mind as he finally starts reading.
-----
Semi's phone buzzes, and he grins at the message.
Itâs been a while since he heard from this friend.
He opens up the text, composing a reply, ignoring the creak as the door opens.
âWhat are you smiling at?â
âA friend is in Tokyo.â He continues replying to the person, snickering at their responses.
âOoh, exciting. I didnât know you had friends.â
Semi throws a spare pillow in his direction, uncaring if it hits its target or not.
Shirabu catches the pillow with a huff, hugging it to himself as he rubs his towel over his hair with his other hand. âAm I allowed to know who this mysterious friend is?â
âSince you were so rude, no.â Semi puts his phone down and picks his book back up, smirking at him. âBesides, you have mysterious friends too.â
âTouchĂ©.â Shirabu doesnât comment further. Heâs not ready to share the identity of his 'mysterious friendâ just yet.
He can hear the little vibrations as Semi gets new messages, but opts to tune him out as he turns their hair dryer on. It feels good to dry his hair even though they are in the heat of summer, and he shakes his dried hair out to rid it of the excess heat.
âIâm never going to get over how fluffy your hair is,â he hears. Shirabu rolls his eyes, though he knows his roommate canât see it.
âSemi-san, you canât really be talking to me about fluffy hair.â
âI believe I just did.â
âHave you looked in a mirror lately?â
âDoes the reflection on my phone screen count?â
Semi laughs as Shirabu throws his pillow back at him with another roll of his eyes. âOkay, okay, geez. I have a serious question now.â
âOooh, scary.â
âShut up, Semi-san.â
âCome over here and make me.â
âOh, gladly.â
Shirabu stalks the two strides across their room and grabs the pillow, but Semi keeps a hold on it, already guessing what heâs about to do.
They grapple back and forth for some time before Semiâs grip suddenly slackens, and Shirabu tumbles atop him. But then the pillow is up in his face, smothering him instead, and a push on his shoulder unbalances him enough that he gets rolled over, a muffled laugh above him.
âYield,â he hears Semi say, but with his mouth full of pillow, Shirabu can only shove against it in hope of a gulp of air.
The grip on the pillow slackens as he knew it would, Semi pulling it back to allow him to breathe. Shirabu shoves weakly against his roommate, trying to dislodge him from where he and the pillow are crushing his chest. âCanât breathe.â
âYes, you can,â Semi says, but the pressure eases up anyway. Itâs just enough for Shirabu to push the ash blond off and sit up, blocking the pillow when it comes for him again.
They push against each other, the pillow squashed between them, neither gaining an inch.
âGive up.â
âNever.â
âThen I guess you wonât be sleeping with this pillow tonight.â
âI have a spare, donât worry.â
âIâll pummel you with this.â
âNo, you wonât.â
âMaybe youâre right. Too much mess to clean up.â
âI knew it. You're too lazy to clean up your normal mess, how are you going to clean up if you murder me?â
âIâll just get someone else to murder you for me,â Shirabu says simply. âAnd I donât have a ânormal messâ, you do!â
âI donât have that many enemies,â Semi counters, choosing to ignore the latter half of what Shirabu said.
âYouâd never know.â
âNow youâre just being dramatic.â
âDid you expect anything less?â
âNo,â Semi admits. âBut then again, I never take puffballs seriously.â
âPuffballâ!â
âLook in a mirror, Shirabu.â Semi gives him a huge shove, his grin half-hidden by the pillow. The action pushes his roommate to the edge of the bed, and his hand shoots out to muss up Shirabuâs hair such that it sticks up even more. âCome back when you look more serious.â
âIâm always serious,â the brunet complains, smacking away the hand and trying to smooth the strands down. But he does get off Semi's bed to return to his own, flopping down and pulling the blanket over himself. âI refuse to talk to you any more.â
âGood riddance.â
Shirabu lifts his head to glare at him. âI will murder you myself, one day.â
âBut that day is not today,â Semi guesses. The stony glare Shirabu gives him confirms this, and he snickers as he moves to turn off the light. âWell, whatever. Iâve got stuff to do tomorrow, I canât stay up and argue with you.â
âThank god,â Shirabu mutters. âGoodnight.â
âNight.â
Semi pulls his blanket over his shoulders, smiling into the darkness as he relives their tussle.
Living with Shirabu can be fun, sometimes.
-----
Semi doesnât notice him until heâs nearly on top of him, chocolate eyes boring into cocoa, staring, staring, waiting for a reaction.
Semi takes a step back and exhales deeply. âKoushi, could you maybe not do that?â
âSorry, sorry,â Suga laughs. They fall into step together, heading towards the shops. âCanât resist, you know? Thereâs not many people I can sneak up on.â
âI suppose Sawamura isnât affected by it?â
âDaichi is so placid,â Suga complains. âHe never reacts to anything I do.â
âAnything?â
âWellâŠâ
âNope,â Semi says, putting his palm up in Suga's face. âI know that look. I donât need any dirty details, thanks.â
Suga shrugs and grins. âYour loss. But you started it.â
âWhat can I say? Youâre a bad influence.â
Suga gasps in mock-affront, putting a hand over his heart. âEita, how dare you. I have the purest heartââ
âAnd the dirtiest mind.â
âYou got me.â Suga drops his hand and the pretence, his grin wide. âGlad to know you havenât changed.â
âAnd you.â Semi laughs.
âAnyway, how've you been?â
âEh.â He shrugs. âUps and downs. School life, you know?â
Suga nods. âAs it is with all of us. But you know, other than school, whatâs up?â
ââŠwe met two minutes ago and youâre already asking for details on my love life?â
âYouâre right, I should have asked immediately.â
Semi rolls his eyes. âYou really havenât changed.â
âNor do you want me to.â
âTouchĂ©.â
âSo, so? Give me the details.â Suga nudges him as he steers them towards a bookshop, and Semi laughs.
âNothing's happened. Iâm too busy for a love life. My roommate is irritating, but other than that, every other part of my life is fine.â
âAh, right. Everyoneâs younger than you in your year, arenât they?â
âMost people, yes. Would you believe that I ended up becoming friends with a few of the volleyball players we used to meet at tournaments?â
âWow. Some luck. Who?â
âNekomaâs second year setter and Datekou's second year captain. I think he was a middle blocker?â
âYou mean when we were third years and they were second years?â Suga asks.
âYes, yes. I keep forgetting that they became the third years after us.â
âYouâre old,â his silver-haired friend teases. âDatekouâs captain, huh? I think he was a wing spiker.â Suga hums as he thinks, tapping his chin. âYeah. Wing spiker.â
His gaze lifts, and he gives Semi an amused smile. âKozume-kun and Futakuchi-kun, huh? What unlikely friends.â
âI know right? Wait, you know them too?â
âKozume-kun is from Nekoma,â Suga reminds him. âNekoma and Karasuno are âfated rivalsâ. And Datekou is a Miyagi school, same as ours. We used to have practice matches with them.â
âCome to think of it, Kenma might have told me the same thing about your schools a long time ago.â
âOooh, first name basis. How scandalous.â Suga wiggles his eyebrows, and Semi punches his shoulder lightly. âIâll tell Hinata, heâll be so sad that he wasnât told about this development.â
The ash blond rolls his eyes. âWeâre not that kind of friends.â
âBah. Youâre no fun, Eita.â
âYou just like gossip.â
âNow, now, letâs not go making false accusations.â Suga shakes a finger at him, a mischievous look on his face. âTell me more about your uni life instead!â
Semi rolls his eyes and grins. Heâs missed Sugaâs antics. âFine. Iâll indulge you. Where was I?â
âI donât know. Something about your roommate?â
âRight!â Semi snaps his fingers, the words coming back to him. âSo, fate decided that I'm not tormented enough and now Iâm stuck with Shirabu as a roommate.â
âShirabu⊠Isnât he that underclassman of yours?â
âThe one and only.â Semi rolls his eyes. âI must have offended too many people in my past life.â
âTough luck.â Suga pats him on the arm. âIs he as awful as he was?â
âHe has his good and bad days.â Semi pauses, before a smirk creeps across his face, a thought coming to mind. âAlthough recently, he's been very secretive about some friends of his.â
âOh?â Suga leans in, eyes glinting.
âAnd apparently, he has a partner, whom none of our mutual friends know about.â
âOh.â His friend nods knowingly. âVery curious.â
âAnd apparently, theyâre catching a movie some time today.â
âWhat? Why didnât you say so earlier? Letâs go find out who this mysterious partner is!â Suga is suddenly ten times more energetic and tries to drag him out of the bookstore, but Semi pulls him back.
âWe donât know where they went,â he points out, to which Suga rolls his eyes.
âGive me a few minutes and Iâll find out.â
âArenât we kind of violating his privacy by doing this?â
âYou wouldnât have told me if you didnât want to violate his privacy at least a little,â Suga points out, phone already to his ear. He holds up a finger, turning his attention to the person he called. âHi Tooru-chan. We need a favour.â
Tooru-chan?
âDid I say 'we'? My bad, you donât need to know who my partner in crime is today.â Suga pauses, brow furrowing at something the other person said. âCanât help me? Just what sort of important mission are you up to that you would deny me, your best friendâ Wow, youâve got nerve. Iwaizumiâs gonna kill you if he finds out.â
Semi follows in amusement as Suga weaves between bookshelves, talking to someone whom he assumes is Oikawa. âA date? Are you certain? Well then, whoâs this mysterious figure? You donât know? Wow, the great Oikawa Tooru, stumped at last!â
Suga suddenly stops, a hand over his mouth. âNo. No way. Oh man, this is too good. Text me your address, weâll be right there. Why? Iâm coming with you, you dense coconut! Plus, this is the perfect scenario for all of us. What? Then go buy tickets! Get three, weâll be right over. Hurry up, Tooru, donât lose him now. Bye.â
Suga turns around, then takes a step back, eyes wide at Semiâs close proximity. âGee, you scared me. But anyway, come on! Weâve got a movie to catch.â
âWhat? A movie? Koushi, tell me what happened!â
âIâll tell you on the way.â Suga grabs his wrist and drags him along. âSo my informantââ
âOikawa.â
âYes, dear old Tooru-chan. He was stalking Iwaizumi to find out who he was going out with and refused to help me, but what do you know?â Suga levels a sly grin at Semi. âThe person weâre stalking just so happens to be the one Iwaizumiâs meeting up with.â
Semi stares at him blankly, and Suga uses a finger to close his hanging jaw. âYouâll catch flies. Lots of them, because itâs summer.â
âWeâre in a shopping mall, there are no flies here,â Semi replies. âAre you serious, though?â
âAbout what Tooru-chan said? Yeah, he sounded dumbstruck. Iâm pretty sure it is real.â
Semi shakes his head. He doesnât know if heâs more confused or stunned to finally have the last piece of the puzzle. âShirabuâs going out with Iwaizumi?â
âOnly one way to find out, donât you think?â Suga grins. âCome on, I just got the text, itâs the next mall over.â
-----
Oikawa is on his phone and tapping his foot impatiently when they spot him. Heâs poorly disguised with a white hoodie over a neon pink shirt, coupled with teal bermudas. The sunglasses on his head seem to be slipping, and he pushes them back just as Semi and Suga approach him.
âTooru-chan. What the hell are you wearing?â
âClothes, Koushi-chan, clothes.â Oikawa glances up from his device, then does a double-take. âSemi-chan?â
âNice to see you too, Oikawa,â he replies drily.
Oikawa shakes his head, causing the sunglasses to fall onto his nose. âNope. Nuh-uh. You said nothing about your partner in crime being him.â
âHe is standing right here. And heâs coming with us.â
âNo.â
âYes. No oneâs interested in Iwaizumiâs chastity here except you, Tooru-chan. Iâll pay you back later, letâs go catch up with the lovebirds first.â Suga puts his hands on Oikawaâs shoulders and spins him around, pushing him towards the cinema.
Oikawaâs hands flail, making several pointless gestures before they stop dead, falling to his sides. âWait, youâre here to stalk Shirabu-chan?â
âI have a vested interest in what my roommate does,â Semi tells him. âWhat Iwaizumi does is none of my business.â
âIf the two of them are really on a date, then itâs Iwa-chan's business as well, no?â
âAnd thatâs why, friends, we are here to stalk them and find out, yes?â Suga slings an arm around both of them, easily dragging them along though both are taller than him. âNow come on. This is prime blackmail material. Tooru-chan, which hall is it?â
âSeven. Wait, wrong direction, thatâs the other way.â
With a lot more hustling and bustling and whispered arguments about their extremely pure intentions for following their friends, they make it to the movie theatre, only to find that their seats are at the bottom.
âTooru-chan, how the heck are we supposed to spy on anyone from the bottom?â Suga whispers ferociously.
âThose were the only seats left!â Oikawa whisper-shouts back.
Semi sighs and pushes on their backs. âJust go. Keep an eye out for them as we walk, we donât want to be spotted.â
Suga twists to wiggle his eyebrows at him. âEita, youâre learning.â
âI donât want Shirabu to spot us and start yelling. Not that thatâs likely, but youâd never know.â
âIwa-chan might lob something at me,â Oikawa says thoughtfully. âBest to just go.â
The theatre is already dark, the advertisements rolling. Itâs hard to pick out individuals, but Semi thinks that he might have seen someone with Iwaizumiâs spiky haircut on the left upper side of the hall. He points this out to the others only when theyâre seated, and the way the duo immediately spin back to check makes him groan. âYou two are so not subtle.â
âShut up, Semi-chan,â Oikawa mutters distractedly. âI donât see anything.â
âItâs dark, my eyes may be playing tricks on me.â
âSo helpful.â Oikawa turns back around, folding his arms and levelling a haughty stare at him. âWhy are you here, again?â
âNot for the furthering of your agenda, thatâs for sure.â
âShh,â Suga hisses. âEven if we canât find them, we can watch the movie. Sometimes the best part happens after movies.â
âHeâs right,â Oikawa says. âIwa-chanâs not the sort to do anything during a movie, he likes watching them too much. He wonât even let me comment during the showing!â
âI can see why,â Semi mutters. Oikawa makes no comment, and the ash blond hopes that itâs just because he didnât hear him.
The movie is not bad, though it would have been a lot better without Oikawaâs excited murmuring. Semi can hardly focus on the dialogue with the running commentary beside him, and resolves to find the movie online at another time to rewatch.
Then the credits roll, Suga reaches over to tap his hand, and he suddenly remembers why they were all there.
The glow of the theatre screen is enough for him to make out Suga's gestured message: stay until the lights go up, and wait for Iwaizumi and Shirabu to leave before following them.
It sounds easy enough, and Semi leans back, eyes tracking the people streaming out, trying to pick out any silhouettes that look familiar.
He sees nothing of interest â there are individuals and families and the occasional couple, but he does not spot the two young men they are looking for leaving the movie theatre.
âMaybe theyâre waiting for the after-credits,â Suga murmurs. âEveryone knows to wait for those.â
Oikawa snorts, motioning to those already leaving. âNot everyone, apparently.â
âAmateurs.â
âPrecisely. Now, brilliant as I am, I have never missed an after-credit scene.â
âAnd yet, you can babble loud enough for the entire cinema to pinpoint your location.â
The trio spin round at the voice, eyes landing on a nonplussed Iwaizumi, Shirabu sitting impassively beside him. Iwaizumi raises his eyebrows at his best friendâs companions. âOh, Sugawara, Semi. Nice to see you.â
Semi manages to croak out a Hello, and Suga greets them sunnily. Iwaizumi nods to each of them in greeting before his gaze returns to Oikawa. âOikawa, how did you manage to get them mixed up in your nefarious deeds?â
âI didnât,â the brunet protests. âIt was allâ Mmprgh!â
Sugaâs smile never wavers though one of his hands is clamped firmly over Oikawaâs mouth. âWe were in the area, and a movie sounded like a great idea. We had no idea Tooru-chan was doing something evil.â
A snort draws their eyes to Shirabu. âPardon me, Sugawara-san, but youâll have to try harder than that to convince me.â
âOh?â
Shirabu nods in Semiâs direction. âYou brought Semi-san. Thatâs plenty suspicious.â
âIâm not a terrorist, brat. Thereâs nothing suspicious about this.â
âAnything you do is suspicious.â
âExcuse me,â Semi protests. He can hear Oikawa cackling beside him, and vaguely wonders when he removed the gag that was Sugaâs hand. âI was just watching a movie with friends.â
âWe're hardly friends, Semi-chan.â Oikawa reminds.
âRight. A friend and an annoying acquaintance.â Oikawa lets out a squawk at the description, and Suga laughs. Iwaizumi seems to be smiling.
âI donât believe you.â Shirabu folds his arms, and Semi can hardly suppress his eye roll.
âBelieve whatever you like. I have no cause to follow you.â
Shirabu pauses, head cocked as he turns over Semiâs words in his head. âReallyâŠ? Hmm. But no one said anything about being followed, Semi-san.â
Semi presses his lips together tightly, refusing to say anything more. His guilty conscience doesnât know what else he could say that wouldnât sound incriminating.
âHold the thought,â Oikawa interrupts, twisting back to face the screen. âAfter-credit scene.â
All five of them watch the scene in agreed-upon silence, Oikawa grabbing Suga to gush after it ends. Suga nods along but pushes him away. Oikawa is unperturbed, turning around to talk to Iwaizumi instead.
âIwa-chan! Did you see that? Do you know what it means? I canât wait for the next part of the series!â
âThatâs another half-year to wait.â
âI know!â Oikawa wilts, slumping on Suga's shoulder. âThe tragedy.â
Shirabu rolls his eyes, and Semi privately agrees. Oikawa is entirely too dramatic.
âWere you guys sitting behind us this entire time?â
The words come completely out of the blue, and Oikawa and Semi turn to stare at an unapologetic Suga, who doesnât seem to care that they are facing down a dragon.
Iwaizumi snorts. âNo, we came down during the credits. We had way better seats than you guys.â He jerks a thumb backwards, in the direction of the higher seats, but his raised eyebrows hold a question.
âItâs not my fault that all the good seats were taken!â Oikawa complains.
âYet now all of us have sore necks thanks to you,â Semi says drily.
âYou wanted to come along, you dug your own grave.â Oikawaâs smile is saccharine, and Semi has to wonder what it is that Suga sees in him. Aoba Jousai's ex-captain is even more aggravating than Shirabu.
âYes, about that. Why did you guys follow us?â The Aggravating Underclassmanâs expression is carefully blank.
âNow, now, Shirabu-kun, letâs not go making false accusations, shall we?â Suga is still cheerfully optimistic. âMaybe we just wanted to watch this movie.â
âMaybe?â
âWhatever it is, itâs done now.â Iwaizumi raises his arms in a stretch, then slumps against the seat. âDo you guys want to get dinner?â
Everyone turns to stare at him, and he shrugs. âThere wasnât any real damage done, as far as Iâm concerned. Just Oikawa being his usual, nosy self.â
âIwa-chan!â The brunet sounds scandalised. âI have only the purest of intentions for your well-being!â
âIâm twenty, I donât need your false worrying.â
âFalseâ!â
âSo,â Iwaizumi claps his hands together over Oikawaâs complaints and looks around at the others. âDinner?â
-----
âA bit ironic to be eating fast food, donât you think?â
âNot really. Weâre poor college students, and there are always seats in a fast food joint.â
âHmm.â
Through some unfortunate luck in drawing lots, Semi has been elected to purchase their food alongside Iwaizumi. It shouldnât have been awkward, but given his newfound knowledge, plus the tension that had never really dissolved from their high school days⊠Well, maybe he was mistaken. It was definitely awkward.
Semi turns around at the sound of Sugaâs laugh, and Oikawaâs complaints that follow. Shirabu is sitting stonily between them, looking as though he wants to be anywhere but there.
âSemi.â
âYes?â He turns back to Iwaizumi, who is wearing a curious look on his face.
âI know youâre the most honest of the three of youââ He jerks a thumb towards their friends, âSo Iâd like to ask: Was Oikawa up to no good?â
Semi pretends to study the menu, dragging out the moment. He sighs after a second, the words bubbling out. âTruthfully, Iâm not sure. I only heard Koushiâs side of the conversation, and all I can guess is that Oikawa was curious about who you were meeting up with, so he followed you.â
âI see.â Iwaizumi looks thoughtful. âYou say you only heard Sugawaraâs side of the conversation?â
Semi figures that nothing worse can happen even if he tells him. âKoushi called Oikawa to ask something, but one thing led to another and suddenly we were going to watch a movie. Iâm not too sure how that happened.â
Iwaizumi shakes his head. âOikawa and Sugawara are masterminds together. Iâm not surprised you got dragged into it, or that youâre not sure how it happened. Itâs happened to me before.â
âReally?â Semiâs surprised. Iwaizumi doesnât seem like the sort to be taken in by anyoneâs deceit.
âIt was the first time I met Sugawara outside of the court. Not an incident Iâm particularly happy to recall.â Iwaizumi frowns at their friends, and as if sensing they are talking about him, Oikawa turns around and flashes his signature grin. In response, Iwaizumi turns away without acknowledging him, and Oikawa looks so affronted that Semi laughs.
âIâve never seen Oikawa look so offended.â
Iwaizumi snorts. âSpend more time with him and Sugawara together. Every other thing Sugawara says offends him.â
âMaybe his words hit a little too close to home.â
âMaybe. Their conversations sound mostly like shit talk to me.â
âBirds of a feather flock together, isnât that what they say?â
âOh yes. Thatâs probably it. No wonder they get along so well.â
It is their turn, and their conversation halts while they place their order and move aside to wait as it is prepared. Iwaizumi drums his fingers on the countertop, and Semi waits, feeling as though he knows what question heâs going to be asked. âWhy did you follow Sugawara, once you realised what he was up to?â
Semi glances back at their friends, who are now throwing verbal insults at each other. Iwaizumi follows his eyes, and snorts a little. âOh. Were you following Shirabu-kun?â
Semiâs a bit surprised at the suffix, but doesnât comment, storing away that information for later. âI guess so. I have no reason to follow you, but I admit I was a bit curious about Shirabu being your companion.â
âCurious?â
âHe never told anyone in our circle of friends that he knew you, so everyone jumped to conclusions about who heâs been going out with.â
âGoing ouâ? Oh.â A baffled look takes over Iwaizumiâs face, but he doesnât get to comment, as their food arrives. They take a tray each and walk back to the table, steps slow to ensure nothing gets spilled.
âSemi.â Iwaizumi doesnât look up from his path, though his words keep flowing. âYou and your friends can rest assured that nothing is going on between us. Weâre just friends.â
Semi snorts. âEven if you werenât just friends, you would tell me that. But itâs your private business. Thereâs no need for you to tell anyone about it unless you want to.â
âThank you. That is something that Oikawa and Sugawara wouldnât understand.â
âWe can agree on that.â
Their arrival at the table is accompanied by loud rejoicing from Oikawa, with a slightly more subdued reaction from Suga. Shirabu nods his thanks as Semi passes his meal to him though he wrinkles his nose a little, and the ash blond responds by giving him a deadpan stare.
âYou two remind me of someone,â Oikawa announces suddenly, pointing at them. âWhatâs with this silent communication, huh?â
âYou just said it, pretty boy. Silent communication. You and Iwaizumi do that too.â Suga throws a fry at him, and Oikawa pops it into his mouth with a grin.
âAha, but Iwa-chan and I grew up together. These two havenât. I wonder why they do that.â Oikawa wiggles his eyebrows at them, and Shirabu pins him with an unimpressed look.
âI live with Semi-san. At this point, heâs like the irritating older sibling I never wanted. Seeing him even more, in my own free time no less, is a horrific experience.â
âWatch your tongue,â Semi warns, mimicking Sugaâs action and launching a fry at his roommate. âIâll put bleach in your shampoo.â
âSave it for yourself, Semi-san. Your roots are showing.â
Suga and Oikawa burst into laughter while Semi throws more fries at Shirabu, and even Iwaizumi cracks a smile behind his burger.
Dinner passes by almost too quickly â insinuating comments and jibes thrown by Oikawa and Suga are countered either by Semi and Iwaizumiâs remarks or by Shirabuâs sharp quips. Itâs almost fun, and Semi can feel himself relaxing as the evening wears on.
Itâs been a while since he had this sort of easy camaraderie, especially with people his age. Itâs nice.
They stay on mostly neutral topics â classes and friend groups and of course, volleyball. Semi finally learns that Oikawa and Iwaizumi go to a university pretty close to his and Shirabuâs, and they agree to ask for a practice match between campuses at some point. Their high school rivalry never did resolve, and it would be fun to settle scores now that they are in university.
âIt wouldnât be very fair to the other players, since they donât know about the never ending feud between Seijou and Shiratorizawa.â Suga comments. âEveryone would wonder what the fuss is about.â
âIt also wouldnât be fair because we donât have Ushijima-san any more,â Shirabu grumbles. âSemi-san is a setter, not a spiker.â
âWho said youâre going to be the setter?â Semi counters. âYou can spike for once.â
âMy spiking sucks!â
âThen work on it. Futakuchi can help you.â
âEw, Futakuchi.â Shirabu wrinkles his nose, and everyone laughs.
âWe still have Makki and Mattsun, so we have the advantage,â Oikawa crows. âSee if your ragtag team can beat us now!â
âDo you think we can borrow Kuroo and Bokuto for this?â Semi mutters to Shirabu.
âMaybe, if they have free time.â
âI'll ask Kenma to ask.â
âYou guys are cheating,â Suga quips, delighted. âThose two arenât even from your university.â
âKoushi, shh.â
âIwa-chan, stop them!â
âHey, I canât control this, donât drag me into it.â
Their conversation derails from there. Semi and Shirabu spend so much time arguing between topics that Oikawa and Iwaizumi finally find out that not only do they attend the same university, they share a room. Oikawa pokes fun at Semi for needing to share a room â with his least favourite underclassman no less â and is promptly put in his place by both Iwaizumi and Suga when they reveal that he is sharing an apartment with three other people.
âAn apartment is nothing compared to a room,â Semi argues. âYou still have the advantage of more space. And privacy.â
âBut Makki hogs the toilet all the time. Mattsun is always cooking and the whole apartment never stops smelling like baked goods. I swear, I never feel like eating cookies anymore!â
The brunet turns to Iwaizumi, who sips at his drink, never breaking eye contact. âAnd Iwa-chan thinks heâs my mum, as usual.â
âSomeone has to make sure we get our deposit back.â Iwaizumi shrugs, then glances at the rest of them. âDo you know how much hair he leaves in the bathroom drain every day? Itâs like living with a girl, I had no idea he had so much hair.â
âIwa-chan!â Oikawa squawks. âI am perfect! I do no such thing!â
âOh, I know,â Suga nods, completely ignoring Oikawa. âThe one time he stayed over at my house, my sister got scolded for the hair that he left in our bathroom drain.â
âHow irresponsible of you, Oikawa-san. How could you let someone else take the fault for your bad manners?â Shirabu deadpans.
Oikawa launches into a tirade, cursing them and their false accusations, but everyone sees the half-smile on his face, and no one thinks he means it. Semi thinks his face is going to split from so much laughing, but he doesnât mind. He canât remember the last time he felt so carefree.
Itâs not until later, when theyâve split into groups as they walk to the train station, that the conversation dies down. Where it was a raging river before, the straits have calmed, the rapids settling, trickling into smaller streams with gentler currents. Their pace is leisurely, comfortable, and it feels like the excitement of the day has finally caught up to them, lethargy weighing them down alongside the heaviness of their meal.
Oikawaâs not surging ahead for once, having chosen to hang back with Shirabu. The other three walk ahead, discussing something or the other.
Shirabu eyes the older boy a little suspiciously. It is not like him to be this quiet and contemplative, despite the excitement of their evening. Even during the days that their schools were rivals, he only remembers the other as this contemplative right before he launched an unexpected attackâ
Oh, no.
âShirabu-chan,â Oikawa quietly begins, eyes fixed on the distant figures of their friends, âWhat are your intentions with Iwa-chan?â
Shirabu refuses to let his emotions show. The change of topic is abrupt, but he canât say it was completely unexpected. He had been expecting someone to ask, at some point. âWith all due respect, Oikawa-san, thatâs none of your business.â
âIt isnât,â Oikawa agrees. âBut as someone who had been in love with Iwa-chan before, I want to give you a bit of advice.â
Shirabu is too stunned to say anything, too taken aback by his candour and the easiness with which he speaks of such a topic. The lack of a response encourages Oikawa to continue. âDonât get your hopes up, is what I want to say. Iwa-chanâs a great guy, but he sees most people as nothing more than friends. Youâre going to be waiting a long time if you want him to consider you at all, and I think your affections are better spent elsewhere.â
âOikawa-san,â Shirabu says slowly, âThank you for your words, but what makes you think that I fancy Iwaizumi-san?â
Oikawa rolls his eyes, not unkindly. âLike I said, I was there once. That face you have around him is the same one that Makki and Mattsun told me I used to make whenever I spoke to Iwa-chan, and heâs my childhood friend. Lovestruck.â He shakes his head, chuckling. âMaybe Iâm wrong â I donât think I am â but if you want to pursue him in that manner and you get rejected, just remember itâs not the end of the world.â
âOikawa-san, I have had crushes before. I know what life after rejection feels like.â
The older grins slyly at him. âSo you admit you like him?â
âI never said that. I just said I know what rejection feels like.â
âMmhmm.â Oikawa smirks knowingly. âOf course you do. But again, a crush is a crush, and love is something more, donât you think?â
âIâm not sure I know what youâre talking about.â
âLove is a lot easier than a crush,â Oikawa tells him. âNo jittery feelings, just a blossoming warmth. It took me a long time to realise that, myself. But you know what? Youâll get there when you get there.â
âYes.â Shirabu deadpans. âThank you for your sagely advice.â
âYouâre very welcome.â Oikawa winks and skips ahead. âCome on. I think theyâve found dessert!â
Their friends have indeed found an uncrowded ice cream shop, and they file inside, swarming the display. Shirabu's on the edge of their group, trying to peer at the flavours. Heâs not short, but itâs difficult to see with the others blocking his view.
âWhat are you getting?â
He glances up at Iwaizumi, then turns back to frown at the glass. âI donât know. Lychee looks interesting, but vanilla is always a safer choice.â
âWhy donât you ask for a sample, then? No point getting something that you wouldnât like.â
âGood point.â He tries to catch the attention of the server, but Iwaizumi beats him to it. He takes the two spoons from the server with thanks, handing a spoon to Shirabu. âHere.â
âThank you.â He bites off half the ice cream, artificial flavour exploding across his tongue. He wrinkles his nose, and Iwaizumi laughs around his own spoon.
âNot good?â
âToo sweet.â He eats the rest of the sample anyway, chewing sullenly on the plastic. âWhat was yours?â
âBlueberry. Itâs good.â
âHmm. Maybe Iâll try that.â
âIâll ask for you.â Iwaizumi turns back to the server, while Shirabu reaches up to put the spoon in the bin provided.
Thereâs a nudge on his shoulder, and he turns, only to startle at the sight of a spoon in front of his face. Semi smirks, but shoves the spoon towards him. âYouâll like this one.â
Shirabu stares at the spoon and the teeth marks in the ice cream. âDid you already eat half of it?â
âYeah, but I donât like it and I think you would, so you eat it.â
âI am not your dustbin,â Shirabu complains, but closes his lips around the spoon. Semi lets it go, and Shirabu frowns at him around the burst of flavour. âHey, this is nice.â
âItâs sea salt with something or the other. Told you youâd like it.â
Shirabu grumbles at him and puts the spoon in the bin, accepting the new sample spoon from Iwaizumi. He thinks he hears Semi go back over to where Suga is calling him as he mulls over the new flavour.
âHow is it?â Iwaizumi asks.
âNot bad. Maybe Iâll get this one and the other sea salt thing.â
âYou must like ice cream a lot.â
âI donât get to have it often, Iwaizumi-san. Stop judging my diet.â Shirabu huffs.
(The other doesnât need to know how much he loves the sweet treat.)
Iwaizumi laughs. âNo judgement. I watch Oikawa eat too much milk bread daily, itâs just second nature to watch out for othersâ sugar intake.â
âOnce in a while is fine,â Shirabu insists.
âYes, thatâs true. But how do I know that this is your first time in a while?â
Shirabuâs about to protest when he sees Iwaizumiâs lips twitch. âYouâre teasing me.â
âAbsolutely not,â the older says, but heâs grinning. Shirabu holds back his initial response, rolling his eyes instead.
After sampling almost all the flavours, everyone decides on what they want. Suga and Shirabu are elected to buy the ice cream while the others go get a seat.
The wait isnât long, but as they watch the girl prepare their dessert, Suga asks, âWas Tooru-chan lecturing you about Iwaizumi?â
Shirabu stares at him. He had just pushed that conversation to the back of his mind, and here it was being brought up again.
(He should have expected it, but at the same time, he had been hoping that it wouldnât be brought back up.)
Suga laughs at his expression. âNo, we didnât plan this, if thatâs what youâre thinking. I just happen to know how he works, and what he would have spoken to you about. He probably told you not to get your hopes up, right?â
âIf you know,â Shirabu starts, âThen why would you ask about it?â
âBecause Iâm curious,â Suga says simply. âAnd because Iâm as nosy as he is. Now, I havenât faced rejection the way Tooru-chan has, so my advice is to not listen to him. Take your own feelings into account. He worries for others because heâs a little more fragile and he took that rejection badly. You, I think, are more resilient.â The silver-haired man hands him some of the ice cream cups and picks up the remainder, tilting his head towards their table with a small smile. âThink on it. But for now, shall we?â
Shirabu follows him silently, turning over the words of both young men in his mind. Itâs too much for an evening, especially when he had been expecting a quiet afternoon out. Heâs getting tired of all the people lecturing him on things he does not want their advice on. Heâs quiet as he picks at his ice cream, and only looks up when he feels something nudge his foot.
Semi raises his eyebrows at him, his eyes holding a question, but Shirabu shakes his head. Itâs nothing.
The ash blond raises an eyebrow to convey his disbelief, to which Shirabu rolls his eyes. Donât worry about me.
Semi shrugs and turns back to the conversation that the others are having, allowing Shirabu to push those thoughts aside and focus on the present.
He has plenty of time later to worry about their advice. For now, he is going to enjoy the company of those he is with.
-----
They say their goodbyes at the station, parting to return to their respective accommodations. Shirabu is still rather quiet, but Semi chooses to say nothing. He had seen Oikawa and Suga speaking to him earlier, and figures he doesnât need any more 'advice'.
âArenât you going to say anything?â
He turns to look at Shirabu, whose eyes are closed as he rests his head against the back of the seat. Semi sighs. âNo. Should I be saying anything?â
âI figured you might want to add your two cents' worth, since Oikawa-san and Sugawara-san have already done so.â
Semi snorts. âWho am I to give you advice on your love life? Do what you like.â
One eye opens to regard him. âHmm.â
âWhat?â
âNothing. I donât trust you on that, but I never trust you.â His eye closes, but Semi does not sense any ill intent coming from him.
âWhat do you mean, you donât trust me?â Semi protests, half-jokingly.
âI mean, maybe you let something like that slip againâŠâ Shirabu opens his eyes, staring at him unapologetically. âI canât think of any other reason why Oikawa-san and Sugawara-san would be so open about giving me 'adviceâ like that.â
Semi blinks at him, first in confusion, then in anger. âIs that what youâre worried about? Why they decided to give you advice?â
âIt is a cause for concernââ
âAnd you really think that I would do that again? I said I wouldnât, and I havenât. Have you stopped to consider that they donât mind talking about it because they donât care about the gender of your partner? I get why youâd suspect I told them, but I swear I didnât.â
âWhy wouldnât they care? Itâs not a normal thing, is it?â
âIâmâ Whatâ Noâ Ugh.â Semi presses the heels of his hands to his eyes, groaning. âWhy are you saying that?â
âBecause itâs true.â
âAre you saying that whatever you or I feel for others is unnatural, then? That anyone else who is like us â who doesnât fit society's norm â is not normal?â
âTo them it is. To us, itâs perfectly fine.â
âExactly.â Semi points at Shirabu accusingly. âSo why are you so hung up on why Oikawa and Koushi decided to talk to you about it?â
âWell, Iâm sorry that I donât know if they are like us or not.â Shirabu snaps. âIs it a crime now to be on my guard?â
âNo, butââ
âLet me deal with my life my own way,â Shirabu says viciously. âI was shocked that they could discuss something so openly, considering how most everyone isnât so accepting. You canât exactly look at someone and tell if theyâre going to accept or condemn you, now, can you?â
Semi bites his words back, knowing heâs right. âNo, but I can tell you that Koushi and Oikawa arenât the sort to condemn you for that.â
âYeah?â
âYes.â Semi chooses to ignore the sarcastic bite in Shirabuâs tone. âThey â Koushi, at least â is very accepting and open. He wouldnât judge you for your preferences. I donât think Oikawa is the sort either. Heâs an asshole but not a hypocrite.â
âHypocrite?â Shirabu looks like heâs beginning to understand, but Semi decides to spell it out for him, just in case.
âNeither of them can judge you when theyâre both dating men.â
The silence stretches as Shirabu stares at him. Finally, he says, âAre you sure you are allowed to tell me that?â
âTheyâre not subtle about it, they wouldnât mind.â Semi says. âIwaizumi and Koushi were the ones who told me who Oikawa is dating, so I can guess that he doesnât care that others know who his partner is. Koushi enjoys flaunting his relationship, so he definitely wonât care that I told you.â
âOkay.â Shirabuâs expression is back to neutral. âAnd what am I supposed to do with this information?â
âAccept that they didnât mean any harm by giving you advice.â Semi grits out. âOf course, whether or not itâs useful advice remains to be seen, considering both their natures.â
Shirabu snorts, rolling his eyes. âI know. It was sort of useful, I think.â
ââŠif you think so.â
They sit in awkward silence for some minutes, neither knowing what to say.
âYou're really not going to bother me about it, then?â
Semi glances over, but Shirabuâs not looking at him, his gaze trained on the wall opposite them. He sighs. âNo. You donât need advice on what to do with your life. If you want to date Iwaizumi, go ahead. There is literally no reason that you need to tell me about your love life.â
âI never said I wanted to date Iwaizumi-san.â
âI said if,â Semi points out. âYouâre practically admitting it, now.â
âI am not.â
âAre too. But like I said, itâs not my business. Whether you do or donât date him, you donât have to tell me.â
ââŠyou donât care?â
âShirabu, exactly what donât you understand about 'It's your life, do what you wantâ?â
âI didnât think youâd be that approving of my dating someone. If I was hypothetically dating someone.â
âIâm not your keeper!â Semi throws his hands up in exasperation. âOr your parent! Do whatever the heck you want! As long as you let me know when not to come back to the room and interrupt you or something, I donât particularly careââ
âDonât insinuate things, oh my godââ
âYou want to date him, itâs bound to happen at some pointââ
âShut up, I never said that, and Iâm nowhere near even confessingââ
âYou just admitted you wanted to confess, so you like him, at leastââ
âShut up, shut up, I donât know how to do this, okayââ
âYouâre not stupid, just try harder, damnitââ
âYou sound like Taichi, shut upââ
âMake meââ
The announcerâs voice comes on, interrupting their argument, and the train slows. Semi claps a hand over Shirabuâs mouth, cutting him off. âArgue later, itâs our stop.â
Shirabu slaps his hand away and follows him sullenly, hands in his pockets. The train station is quiet, though the streets back to the university are generously lit, the lights welcoming as they lead the way. There arenât many people about because of the hour, and their pace is slow, unhurried.
Thereâs a sort of peace that surrounds them, tranquillity seeping through their skin, permeating their bones. Itâs as if the serenity of the late hour is replacing the tension and weight of any other emotion, allowing them a space, a clear pool untouched by wandering thoughts. Shirabu basks in the rare bubble of tranquillity, feeling the last of the agitation from earlier slip off his shoulders.
His head tilts back, eyes lazily tracing the skyline, searching for stars that are unseen. It makes him smile a little, at the futility of his action. Itâs been so long, and of course he knows that the stars are obscured, but he still canât help looking. It reminds him of another time, almost too long ago â almost a year ago now.
(How time flies.)
âSemi-san.â
âYeah?â
âRemember when we first met in Tokyo?â
âYou mean how we first found out we had to live together?â
âOh, yes. The horror.â Shirabu sounds so sarcastic that Semi has to crack a smile. âBut I was thinking of the time after that, when we went out to find ice cream and yet never did.â
âWeâ Oh. Yeah, we did, didnât we?â Semi tilts his head back; his turn now, at searching for lights in the starless sky. âWeâve had ice cream lots of times after that, though.â
âYeah.â Shirabu is quiet as he thinks. âA lot of times.â
âEnough times that I know you never try any new flavours,â Semi teases. âI was actually surprised that you got flavoured ice cream today.â
âI like trying new things once in a while, geez.â Shirabu kicks at his heel, trying to trip him.
(He doesnât succeed.)
âNo, you donât.â
âShut up and let me do what I want.â Shirabu grumbles, and Semi laughs.
âYouâll always do whatever you want, regardless of what I say.â
âYouâve got a point.â
They shuffle along in companionable silence, growing closer and closer to the school, passing by familiar neighbourhoods to reach their destination. Thereâs a tug on his sleeve and Semi looks down, but Shirabu isnât looking back at him.
âWhat is it?â
âAre you going to tell Kenma and Futakuchi?â
âAbout what?â He thinks he knows what.
Shirabu makes an annoyed sound. âWhat you saw today.â
âNo?â Semiâs puzzled. âWhy would I?â
âBecause theyâre dying to know who my 'mysterious friend' is? Donât deny it, I know theyâve asked you about it.â
âAgain: why would I do that?â Semi is perplexed. âJust because theyâre being nosy doesnât mean I have to indulge them.â
âBut you were curious too.â
âSo sue me for wondering if you were in bad company all the times that you went out and came home so late.â Semi throws his hands up in exasperation. He seems to be doing that a lot, lately. âItâs your life. I just want to know that I wonât have to wake up to an empty room and the cops at the door because you went missing!â
Shirabu stares at him for a second, then lets out a snort. âYou are so dramatic.â
âIâm worried!â
âYeah, yeah.â His steps slow as he turns to face Semi. âWere you following us on purpose?â
âYou never give up, do you?â Â Semi groans, raising a hand instinctively to block the punch Shirabu throws. âNo, not at first.â
âNot at first?â
âStop being so dramatic, geez. I was just telling Koushi the usual gossip he wanted to hear and the next thing I know, heâs called Oikawa and all the pieces have fallen into place like some miracle and weâre in the movie theatre.â Semi rolls his eyes. âI had no intention of following you, but Koushi dragged me into it.â
âOh.â That shuts him up for a bit. âSugawara-san is a lot sneakier than I gave him credit for.â
Semi laughs. âOh, you have no idea. You should have heard the story of how he tricked Sawamura into confessing first. That was hilarious.â
âSugawara-san didâ What?â
Semi laughs harder at Shirabuâs stunned expression. âKoushi never lets Sawamura live it down. The story goes that Sawamura was stuttering and delaying it, and Koushi egged him on until he was half-dead with embarrassment.â
ââŠremind me never to get on Sugawara-san's bad side. Poor Sawamura-san.â
âWell, theyâre very happy together, so I wouldnât say that,â Semi hums. âI think Sawamura came to Tokyo with Koushi, so you can go witness their lovey-dovey stuff for yourself.â
âYou want me to be a third wheel? No thanks.â
âAsk Iwaizumi to go with you.â
Shirabu makes a sound like a dying duck. âThen itâs going to look like a double date. No. No, no, no, I am not doing thisââ
âFor goodnessâ sake, you like the guy, just ask him out!â
âItâs complicated!â
âThen uncomplicate it!â
âHow!â
âI donât know!â
Theyâre standing in the middle of the sidewalk, yelling at each other, and it suddenly occurs to Semi that they are too close to the residential areas to be making a racket, especially this late at night. His gaze darts about, and seeing no one, shushes Shirabu every time he tries to speak, dragging him along.
âWe are trying not to be more of a public nuisance,â he hisses to the struggling brunet. âWe probably woke up half the blocks with our yelling.â
âYou started it,â Shirabu mumbles.
âNo, you did.â
âNo, it was you. Stop coming up with embarrassing ideas and I wonât have to yell!â
Semi shushes him again. âAnd if I donât give you ideas, youâre never going to confess to him!â
âYouâre not exactly the poster child for successful relationships, you donât get to tell me what to do.â
Semi winces, the memory of a certain redhead and another, broader figure coming to mind. âI know what not to do, which is why Iâm telling you what you should do.â
âI will muddle my way through my own relationship mess, thank you very much. You and Taichi can keep your noses out of it.â
âIâm helping you here,â Semi says, exasperated. At this point, exasperation is going to be the only emotion he associates with Shirabu. âAsk Iwaizumi to show Koushi and Sawamura around Tokyo on my behalf because Iâm busy or something. Only Koushi and you will ever know itâs a double date.â
ââŠyou are more evil than I gave you credit for, Semi-san.â
âBlame Koushi. Heâs rubbing off on me.â
They walk the rest of the way back to the dorms in silence. The quiet surrounding them is broken only by the sound of traffic, the scuffle of their shoes on the pavement, the slight whisper of the wind as it passes them by. Each is lost in his own thoughts, but soon they unite in action â pulling at the fabric that clings to their skin, shifting uncomfortably under the straps of their bags.
It is summer, and it is too hot to be in a city, where the lights add to the heat and the buildings never release their stored thermal energy fast enough. But somewhere in the midst of the cloying heat that melts brains, the duo seem to have come to a silent consensus, a remembrance of their truce â the shadow of a memory from times long past.
They trek back to their room, movements almost in sync, and it feels like theyâve found their own little glade of serenity â individualistic yet slightly interdependent. Slightly compromising, that they may coexist.
The night is warm, but they donât want to turn on the air conditioning. They make do with the fan in their room, shuffling around until they sit comfortably before it, the wind rustling their shower-damp hair.
âIs it warm enough that we can sleep on the floor?â Shirabu asks, eyes closed in the face of the fan.
âWeâre gonna catch colds.â Semi counters, but he is considering it.
âJust for one night. We can use the blankets to prevent a chill. Unless it gets too hot, then all bets are off.â
âWellâŠâ
Shirabu leans over and stretches up to his bed, pulling his pillow and blanket down. The pillow is tossed near the fan, and he uses the blanket to cover the floor, much to Semiâs horror.
âThe floor is dirty. Youâre going to get sick.â
âIâll do the laundry tomorrow. Do you want to sleep here or not?â
Semi groans quietly, but does not answer. He leans over to his bed and pulls his blanket off as well, making up his own nest on the floor.
Itâs way too cramped on the floor for two young men, and they are almost elbow to elbow when they lie down, the fan oscillating, stirring currents above their heads. The lights from outside peek through the gaps in their blinds, playing out across the ceiling. Below the lights, wandering across the short expanse of flattened blankets, fingers shove against each other, pushing back and forth in a lazy war for dominance over the seam where their blankets meet.
One hand draws away first â thereâs the sound of rustling fabric, and Semi turns his head to see that Shirabu has rolled over, resting now with his head on his folded hands.
âSemi-san?â
âHm?â
âMaybe⊠Maybe we could go on that outing with Sawamura-san and Sugawara-san?â
ââWeâ?â
Shirabu makes the dying duck sound. âI canât ask Iwaizumi-san. Not yet. But Iâd like to see Sawamura-san and Sugawara-san's relationship for myself, and since youâre friends with themâŠâ
âIâm mostly friends with Koushi.â
âStill.â Shirabu makes a disgruntled sound. âPlease?â
âOnly if you do something for me.â
âWhat?â
âIf Koushi tries to insinuate itâs a double date, youâll help me push him into a fountain or something.â
Shirabu makes another dying duck sound. âYes. Yes, yes, yes, Iâll help you with that, no problem. Heaven forbid someone assumes that Iâm dating you.â
Semi laughs. âLikewise. Iâll message Koushi tomorrow.â
âThanks.â
âNo problem.â
Then thereâs nothing but the sound of their breathing, but the sound of the fan and its whirring. Itâs still warm, but not uncomfortably so, and Semi can feel himself drifting.
He doesnât really register it when Shirabu calls him next, too lost in the realm of half-sleep. He doesnât really register the soft touch on his arm, thinking it to be part of a dream. He doesnât really register the extra warmth at his side nor the shuffling that comes with it, because he is almost completely asleep.
He sleeps on. Itâs only later â in the middle of the night, when heâs suddenly a tad too warm â does he realise that the burning warmth in his arms, draped across his side â it smells hauntingly familiar; and the puffs of air on his neck â they may not be the fan, after all.
And maybe heâs a little confused, because even in the space between dreams and reality, he knows, he remembers their conversation, and he knows where the affections of his roommate lie.
But he doesnât let go, though he scoots away a little so that they might cool down. He doesnât let go, not though he has one arm draped over the shoulders of this figure that he knows well, not though the fingers connected to that hand and arm are cupping a head, the strands of hair soft and pleasing under his fingertips.
