So I learned that if you fail the Drama check during the sunken car investigation, Kim will basically find your attempt at whistling endearing and encourage you to keep at it

It's really cute. It goes to show that Harry messing up out of genuine determination makes Kim see him as endearing rather than a full-on disaster sometimes

Tbh the fact that Kim likes your karaoke no matter whether you pass or fail the check is touching in a way but also it’s so fucking funny how offended he gets on your behalf if u fail and no one claps for u. “These people wouldn’t know a good performance if it bit them in the ass.” “He really sang his heart out.” He’s like you fucking NORMIES just don’t get it. You philistines.

Even funnier that it’s not even really about you, bc if he genuinely didn’t like it it he’d probably be about as tactful about it as he is about shaving the mutton chops. It’s the principle of the thing. And then u add yet another layer of humor when u know Kim’s personal music tastes. Kim’s not a particularly artsy guy and his conceptualization skills are (at least in Harry’s opinion) “rudimentary,” but he’s also super mega ultra repressed and his release valve seems to be music. Specifically the loudest and nastiest most vulgar music possible. He loves ur performance bc u basically go onstage and have a breakdown set to music for two or three minutes and he’s like so fucking true bestie. Now THAT’S what a good performance should be. An honest display of torment for me the audience to live vicariously through. Except I’m the only one doing that bc I’m da king of da karaoke bar and everyone else is a tasteless hack. <- was listening to “An Asshole is a Mouth for Shit (And I’m Puking)” in his Kineema ten minutes ago

someone else could write it better than me but i love how the fucked up nasty shit you can make harry do/say/be in disco elysium isn't just like, random stuff caused simply by the player having free will and control over him but they're parts of who he is and who he has been

you're not a tabula rasa. you're a sudden shock of blank pages in a big, aged, damaged book and sometimes the paper you're trying to write a better man on is torn and you see something through the gaps nobody needed to see ever again. and it's just there now again, back to the surface

I’m sure this has been talked about before but the health system in Disco Elysium is so good at portraying Harry’s physical and emotional state. Like yeah, looking at bullet holes in a wall can give you a heart attack. Someone not liking you poem can cause a complete mental break. None of these things on their own will kill you, but your mental and physical state is so fragile that any one of them can be the final straw. The health system and the story convey what a mess Harry is in complimentary ways and it’s fucking awesome

And if something would actually kill or seriously maim you? The health system doesn’t get involved. You just die or get seriously maimed. You antagonize someone until they shoot you? Doesn’t matter how much medicine you have. Get shot in the leg? Yeah that’s gonna stick no matter how high your health is.

And of course the way that both low morale and low health can kill you- and the way that their mechanics are basically the same- shows Harry’s state as well. His mental and physical health are separate, but both can end his career and both are endangered every time he talks to someone or does anything even slightly dangerous.

In most video games, health functions to give you a second chance. Instead of dying outright from a bullet, you just lose health. Disco Elysium is the opposite. You will die outright from things that would kill you, and also if you aren’t keeping an eye on things you can die from the embarrassment of failing to make a jump! The health system is a way of emphasizing your fragility, not your strength. It’s super coo!!

The fact that so many DE players have only played one companion-version of the end-game (Kim) is so deeply tragic to me, I just don't think you can say you've truly experienced what the game has to offer if a) you're not willing to let go of your safety-blankie (Kim) and b) you don't engage with the creators' thoughts on adoptive family.
