If I could be arsed to learn how to edit videos and had some kind of mic, I would 110% make a two part video essay series on the politics of Jurassic World because MY GOD, there's so much to dissect.

The first part would be about how the park is the epitome of neoliberal futurism for techbros, including the way the park so easily falls apart though I doubt that aspect is purposeful. Everything is aesthetic first and function second, and we can't possibly use any of the reliable infrastructure we've already come up with because a train is not gonna get us to Mars, but a monorail might.

And the second would be about the buckwild terrible gender politics going on. The movie is deeply unsympathetic to Claire seemingly because she's a woman who prioritised her career as it's both centre to her character arc and also an inciting event of one of the plots. Not to mention the whole Zara thing or the Owen and Claire thing or the stupid "him, I meant him, line. The movie is rife with misogyny, but it feels like that specific misogyny was isekaied over from backlash to second wave feminism.

I could talk about it all for so long because in a way, it feels like a perfect time capsule for 2015. Back when people took Claire running in heels to be this feminist statement to be made fun of and not just a deeply misogynistic movie trying to sell you feminism. And back when Elon Musk managed to get away with his "I'm the real life Iron Man" shit, and people believed he was smart and all his plans would come to fruition. 2015 was a great time to be a tech bro in Silicon Valley with people just throwing money at all your fake promises.

Yeah. See. This is what I mean when I say I could talk about it forever.

I'm surprised no billionaires have ever tried to build Captain Nemo's Nautilus to live a self-sufficient life at sea. It could never work, but that's the exact kind of mad project that someone like Elon Musk would cook up to waste money if space travel weren't in vogue right now. Nuclear reactors can run for years before needing to refuel, and modern subs can make their own oxygen from seawater, so they can stay submerged for as long as their supplies last (the record is 111 days set by the HMS Warspite in 1982-3). I don't think a sub could stay underwater forever by fishing for all its food, but then again I'm a rational adult with common sense and the ability to recognize the impossible, while a billionaire just wants his neat toy to work no matter what. It's like that Australian guy who wanted to build a replica of the Titanic and a "real" Jurassic Park with lifesize animatronics, and gave up after he realized they would take a lot more time and money than he imagined at first impulse.

Thing is, as funny as it would be to watch someone like Musk try snd fail to build the Nautilus, there's no incentive for him to do it. All his half-baked ideas are designed to fail from the start because the failure is the point; there's always a benefit to his failures. The hyperloop was never really supposed to exist, he only hyped it up so California would cut funding for high speed rail. SpaceX rockets explode more often than they succeed so they're not really gonna take anyone to the moon or Mars anytime soon, this program is just a blank check from the government so the US could hypothetically launch military supplies anywhere on Earth within a couple hours. A real life Nautilus would have to be some scam, a cover for something heinous like a prison camp for the homeless straight out of some 80s sci-fi dystopia movie, or a cartoonish distraction from horrors of war like an underwater drone program or American terrorists privateers attacking fiber optic cables and gas pipelines owned by eastern companies.

The eccentric billionaire is a myth designed to make the worst human being you could possibly imagine look like benevolent innovators who want nothing more than to Propel Humanity Into the 22nd Century Today™!

I'm finally feeling less dizzy so I've been playing a little bit of Sonic Frontiers and wowowowow

So far my only criticisms are that the world feels kind of empty, pop-in is pretty severe (but not too noticeable if you're focusing on Sonic), and the graphics aren't as good in comparison to some other games I've played on the PS4, but those are very minimal complaints. So far I think this game is one of the best Sonic games that I've played in recent years. The whole boosting + hyperloop move thing is somehow The Most Sonic Thing™ that I think I have ever seen in a game, and the sprawling free roam gives you the freedom to be as fast as you want. I love the skill tree too, that's fun, and the battle mechanics in general are fantastic. I'm really excited to see where it goes.

The only thing it needs is a chao garden.
