BRAIN WOUND UPDATE #10: AVIV Clinic Press Release: Review of Scientific Basis of HBOT for TBI
Tumblr media
BRINGING YOU CURRENT INFORMATION ABOUT HOW TO HELP TREAT AND HEAL BRAIN WOUNDS: CONCUSSIONS, TBI, PTSD ORLANDO, Fla., Aug. 01, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Aviv Clinics, one of the most advanced brain clinics in the world, shares the results of a new comprehensive literature review that shows hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) should be recommended as an effective therapy for patients suffering with chronic mild traumatic brain injury (TBI). Chronic mild traumatic brain injury occurs when symptoms from a mild traumatic brain injury are prolonged and last for more than six months. The literature review, The efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in traumatic brain injury patients: literature review and clinical guidelines, was conducted by the Sagol Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Research at Shamir Medical Center, Tel Aviv University and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s neurosurgery department, and published in the official journal of the European Society of Medicine, Medical Research Archives. The literature review evaluated articles and human clinical trials data from 1969 to April 2023 that provided detailed information on the type of HBOT treatment and clinical outcomes. The articles were categorized into acute-subacute traumatic brain injury and chronic traumatic brain injury and evaluated by HBOT experts and esteemed research leaders Dr. Shai Efrati, director of the Sagol Center and co-founder of Aviv Scientific; Dr. Amir Hadanny, chief medical officer at Aviv Scientific and chief medical research officer at the Sagol Center; and Dr. Joseph Maroon, vice chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The literature review concluded that HBOT should be recommended for chronic traumatic brain injury for a selected group of patients suffering from prolonged post-concussion syndrome (PPCS) who have clear evidence of metabolic dysfunctional brain regions and who have been properly evaluated by standardized cognitive tests and functional brain imaging. Evidence involved in the review, including seven randomized controlled trials and six prospective studies, suggested significant improvement in cognitive function, symptoms and quality of life in patients with chronic mild traumatic brain injury. For acute moderate-severe TBI, the review concluded that HBOT may be recommended as a treatment but explained that further studies are needed to both evaluate outcomes and determine the optimal treatment protocols. Evidence in the review, including nine randomized controlled trials, one meta-analysis and two prospective studies evaluating the clinical effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in patients suffering from acute and subacute traumatic brain injuries, showed mortality was significantly reduced but mixed results for favorable functional outcomes in survivors. “This literature review scoured an immense amount of data related to HBOT as a therapy for traumatic brain injury, and the evidence that HBOT is effective against chronic traumatic brain injury is clear,” said Dr. Amir Hadanny, Chief Medical Officer at Aviv Scientific and Chief Medical Research Officer at the Sagol Center. “When looking at the comprehensive data over a larger stretch of time, we’re seeing the quality of studies have improved, and it’s exciting to see HBOT research heading further in the right direction. Many people are dealing with symptoms of chronic traumatic brain injury, and the current rehabilitation methods are limited in their efficacy. The science behind how HBOT can be effective is evident, and there is hope for those who are suffering.” HBOT is a medical treatment in which 100% oxygen is administered at an increased environmental pressure. Aviv’s unique HBOT protocol, the hyperoxic-hypoxic paradox, fluctuates oxygen levels during treatment and is being used to repair and regenerate damaged brain tissue in several types of brain injuries including traumatic brain injury, stroke, PTSD, long COVID and age-related cognitive decline among others. Previous studies from the research team at the Sagol Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Research have demonstrated the efficacy of HBOT as a treatment for persistent post-concussion syndrome (PPCS), suggesting that HBOT improves cognitive function, behavioral function and quality of life in both adult and pediatric patients suffering from PPCS at the chronic stage, even years after their injury. Aviv Clinics offers an advanced treatment program with a multidisciplinary team of medical experts providing patients with top-line care and the opportunity to improve their quality of life. The Aviv Medical Program includes an in-depth assessment of the patient’s physical and neurological condition to assess the fit for the program. For patients that meet the criteria, the Aviv team will then prepare a comprehensive treatment schedule combining HBOT with personal cognitive training, and physical and dietary coaching, for a holistic approach to patient health. The HBOT sessions are conducted in state-of-the-art multiplace chambers that are comfortable, safe and allow for medical staff to accompany patients during the treatment. The elevated pressure in the HBOT chamber creates an optimal oxygenation condition, ultimately encouraging damaged brain and body tissues to regenerate and heal. The full study is available here. The Role of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Tissue Regeneration
Tumblr media
A medical procedure that is garnering a lot of interest in the field of medicine is hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), which has the ability to encourage tissue regeneration and repair. From serious injuries to chronic wounds, this therapy has shown potential in promoting healing. It entails inhaling pure oxygen in a pressured atmosphere.
What is oxygen therapy using hyperbaric pressure? Patients who undergo HBOT sit or sleep within a chamber that has 100% oxygen and has an atmospheric pressure greater than usual. This procedure is non-invasive.The oxygen may more easily dissolve into the blood plasma due to the increased pressure, which makes it possible for it to reach parts of the body with lower blood flow. The body's natural healing mechanisms are stimulated and injured tissues are repaired by this oxygen infusion. READ ALSO:
THE IMPACT OF SARCOPENIA AND OSTEOSARCOPENIC OBESITY ON AGING AND MORTALITY
Two different kinds of chambers can be used to provide the therapy: A monoplace chamber is a space designated for a single person, in which the occupant rests within a clear tube. Hospitals frequently employ multiplace chambers, which are bigger spaces that can hold several individuals. The Mechanisms of Tissue Regeneration Using HBOT All of the cells in our body need on oxygen to survive and operate. The oxygen flow to wounded or inflammatory tissues is frequently disrupted. When this supply is restored with HBOT, the body may heal itself more successfully.
In the following methods, HBOT encourages tissue regeneration:

The Benefits of a Portable Hyperbaric Chamber: A Comprehensive Guide
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) has revolutionized the way medical conditions are treated, allowing for healing and overall wellness. Traditional hyperbaric chambers are typically located in medical facilities, but portable hyperbaric chambers are now available for individuals to obtain the benefits of HBOT from the comfort of their own homes. In this blog, we will explore the benefits, functionality, and considerations of using a portable hyperbaric chamber, particularly focusing on how it can benefit residents of Atlanta, Georgia.
Tumblr media
What is a portable hyperbaric chamber?
A portable hyperbaric chamber is an inflatable, portable, compact device delivering oxygen at higher pressure than atmospheric pressure. Hyperbaric therapy has been found to improve the natural healing processes of the body and even offer relief for health conditions. This is not similar to conventional chambers, as treatment is given directly at a person's home, rather than a clinic or hospital.
These chambers are designed to be easy to set up and use, making them a great option for people who may not have access to a full-sized facility or those who prefer the privacy and flexibility of home treatment.
How Does a Portable Hyperbaric Chamber Work?
Portable hyperbaric chambers work by increasing the air pressure around the body, allowing your lungs to take in more oxygen than usual. The process is based on the principle of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, where the elevated oxygen levels in the blood promote healing, reduce inflammation, and boost overall health.
Inside the chamber, the air pressure is increased to 1.3 to 1.5 times that of normal atmospheric pressure, allowing oxygen to dissolve more readily into the bloodstream. This increased oxygen availability supports the body's natural ability to repair damaged tissues, fight infection, and recover from injury or illness.
Health Benefits of a Portable Hyperbaric Chamber
Faster Recovery from Injuries
One of the most obvious advantages of hyperbaric oxygen therapy is to help an individual recover more rapidly from injury. Whether it is an injury from participating in sports, post-surgery, or a chronic wound, a portable hyperbaric chamber can help speed up the recovery process. Increased oxygen supply promotes quicker repair of tissues, reduced swelling, and speeding cellular regeneration.
Enhanced Immune Function
A portable hyperbaric chamber strengthens the immune system by enhancing oxygen flow to the body's tissues, making it easier to fight off infections. The additional oxygen in the bloodstream stimulates white blood cell production and supports their function in fighting bacteria and viruses, which can be especially beneficial during cold and flu season.
Reduced Inflammation and Pain Relief
Chronic inflammation underlies most conditions, from arthritis to fibromyalgia to tendonitis. Through the induction of new blood vessels, improvement in circulation, and delivery of oxygen to inflamed tissues, HBOT reduces inflammation. It relieves discomfort experienced by sufferers of chronic pain and chronic inflammation significantly by visiting a portable hyperbaric chamber regularly.
Improved Brain Function and Cognitive Health
Studies indicate that hyperbaric oxygen therapy can improve brain health through increased oxygen supply to the brain. This has been applied in treating conditions like TBI, stroke recovery, and even neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. Most users of portable hyperbaric chambers report improvements in memory, concentration, and cognitive ability following consistent therapy.
Skin Health and Anti-Aging Benefits
It increases the production of collagen, a protein that is in charge of elasticity in the skin and general health. Regular sessions in a portable chamber can help improve skin tone, reduce wrinkles, and enhance a youthful look. Furthermore, increased oxygen helps regenerate cells of the skin much faster, which makes it effective for treating such conditions as acne scars, burns, and other injuries on the skin.
Enhanced Sleep and Stress Relief
This increased supply of oxygen to the brain calms the nervous system, thus improving sleep quality and reducing the level of stress hormones in the body. Portable hyperbaric chambers can alleviate the suffering of those with insomnia, anxiety, or depression by promoting relaxation and reducing the impact of stress hormones. It may be a great option for those seeking natural means of enhancing their overall well-being and mental health.
Tumblr media
Why Choose Portable Hyperbaric Chambers?
There are several reasons one might choose to use a portable hyperbaric chamber over visiting traditional facilities in Atlanta.
Convenience and Flexibility
Portable chambers provide the advantage of treatment at home. You can benefit from HBOT at your own pace and on your schedule without frequent visits to a medical centre. Whether you use the chamber for recovery, wellness, or certain health conditions, the ability to have a session in the comfort of your home can make the process much more convenient.
Affordability
While traditional HBOT sessions at a clinic are expensive, an investment in a portable chamber will prove to be a more cost-effective long-term solution. The ability to use the chamber multiple times a week or month will save you a great deal of money compared to ongoing visits to the clinic.
Safety and Comfort
Portable hyperbaric chambers are very safe. Such chambers are always built with tough and quality materials. Many chambers also have built-in safety features like pressure monitors and emergency release valves. They are comfortable as well with large interiors and controls that can be easily accessed for a wonderful session every time.
Things to Consider When Using a Portable Hyperbaric Chamber
Before purchasing or using a portable hyperbaric chamber, it's important to keep the following considerations in mind:
Consult with a Healthcare Provider: If you're using HBOT for a specific medical condition, it’s essential to consult with your healthcare provider beforehand. They can guide you on whether hyperbaric oxygen therapy is suitable for your needs and help monitor your progress.

How Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Can Accelerate Recovery from Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries
Tumblr media
Brain injuries, whether mild or severe, can result in long-lasting cognitive impairments that diminish quality of life. From memory loss to difficulties in concentration, these symptoms often persist for months or even years, making it hard for patients to resume their normal activities. One promising treatment for these chronic neurocognitive deficits is hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). At Pacific Hyperbarics, we are at the forefront of using HBOT to help patients recover from brain injuries and regain cognitive function.
What are Chronic Neurocognitive Deficits?
After a traumatic brain injury (TBI), some patients develop chronic neurocognitive deficits, which can include:
Memory problems
Trouble with attention and focus
Poor problem-solving abilities
Difficulty with multitasking
Persistent headaches
These deficits can significantly impact daily life, job performance, and relationships, leaving many patients feeling frustrated and hopeless.
Traditional Approaches vs. HBOT
Traditional treatments for chronic neurocognitive deficits often focus on symptom management through medication or cognitive rehabilitation. While these methods can be helpful, they do not address the underlying damage to brain cells caused by the injury.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), however, targets the root cause by enhancing the body’s natural healing processes. By increasing the amount of oxygen delivered to damaged brain cells, HBOT can stimulate cell repair and improve cognitive function, offering a more comprehensive solution for long-term recovery.
The Healing Mechanisms of HBOT
In a hyperbaric chamber, patients breathe pure oxygen under increased pressure, allowing more oxygen to dissolve into the blood. This oxygen-rich environment enhances:
Cellular Repair: Oxygen promotes faster repair of damaged cells and tissues, helping to regenerate brain cells.
Inflammation Reduction: Brain injuries often cause inflammation that impairs function. HBOT reduces inflammation, allowing the brain to heal more effectively.
Neurogenesis: HBOT stimulates the growth of new neurons, aiding in brain recovery and helping to improve cognitive abilities.
Research Supporting HBOT for Brain Injuries
Research into the effects of HBOT on brain injuries has shown promising results. A retrospective analysis conducted at Pacific Hyperbarics evaluated the impact of HBOT on patients with chronic neurocognitive deficits post-TBI. The findings were encouraging:
Patients experienced significant improvements in memory and attention after HBOT treatments.
Headaches, a common symptom of TBI, were reduced in frequency and intensity.
Many patients reported feeling more mentally alert and able to handle daily tasks with greater ease.
These results highlight the potential of hyperbaric oxygen therapy to provide lasting relief for patients dealing with the aftereffects of brain injuries.
The HBOT Process at Pacific Hyperbarics
Initial Assessment: Every patient undergoes a comprehensive evaluation to determine the extent of their cognitive deficits and whether HBOT is suitable.
Customized Treatment Plan: Each patient receives a tailored treatment plan designed to meet their specific needs, including the recommended number of therapy sessions.
HBOT Sessions: During each session, the patient rests comfortably in the hyperbaric chamber while breathing pure oxygen. The sessions last about 60-90 minutes, and multiple sessions are typically required for optimal results.
Ongoing Monitoring: Throughout the therapy process, our team tracks the patient’s progress and adjusts the treatment plan as needed.
Success Stories from Pacific Hyperbarics
At Pacific Hyperbarics, we have seen numerous success stories from patients who have undergone HBOT for chronic neurocognitive deficits. For instance:
David, a 42-year-old patient, suffered from memory and concentration issues after a fall that resulted in TBI. After completing his HBOT sessions, he noticed a significant improvement in his ability to focus at work and manage complex tasks.
Samantha, a young mother, experienced persistent headaches and mental fog after a car accident. HBOT helped reduce her headaches and improved her overall cognitive clarity, enabling her to return to her daily routine.
Conclusion :-
If you or a loved one is struggling with the long-term effects of a traumatic brain injury, hyperbaric oxygen therapy at Pacific Hyperbarics offers a promising solution. By promoting brain cell repair, reducing inflammation, and supporting cognitive function, HBOT can help patients overcome chronic neurocognitive deficits and return to their lives with renewed clarity and energy.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: A Breath of Healing Power 🫁💨
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment that harnesses the power of oxygen to promote healing and recovery in a variety of conditions. By delivering pure oxygen at higher-than-normal atmospheric pressure, HBOT enhances the body's natural healing processes, offering benefits for patients with a range of medical issues, from chronic wounds to neurological conditions. 🌍💡
Tumblr media
What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy? 🤔
Best Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy involves breathing 100% oxygen in a pressurized chamber, usually at a pressure level higher than sea level. The patient enters a specialized chamber, where the air pressure is increased to two to three times normal atmospheric pressure. This allows the lungs to absorb much more oxygen than would be possible under standard conditions. The oxygen is then transported through the bloodstream, reaching areas where circulation may be compromised and promoting healing at a cellular level. 🚀
How Does HBOT Work? 🛠️
Oxygen is essential for life, playing a critical role in the body’s healing processes. Under normal conditions, oxygen is carried by red blood cells and dissolved in the blood plasma. In a hyperbaric environment, the elevated pressure allows oxygen to dissolve more readily into all bodily fluids, including plasma, cerebrospinal fluid, and lymph, reaching areas where red blood cells may struggle to deliver sufficient oxygen. This increase in oxygen availability helps reduce inflammation, fight infections, and stimulate the growth of new blood vessels, which are vital for healing damaged tissues. 🩺
Applications of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy 🌟
Chronic Wound Healing 🦶: HBOT is widely recognized for its effectiveness in treating chronic, non-healing wounds, particularly in patients with diabetes or vascular disease. These wounds often suffer from poor circulation, and HBOT helps by delivering oxygen directly to the damaged tissues, accelerating the healing process and reducing the risk of amputation.
Decompression Sickness (The Bends) 🤿: HBOT is the standard treatment for decompression sickness, a condition that can occur in divers who ascend too quickly. The therapy helps eliminate nitrogen bubbles in the blood that cause the condition, alleviating symptoms and preventing long-term damage.
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning 🚨: HBOT is also used in cases of severe carbon monoxide poisoning. The high levels of oxygen delivered in the chamber help displace carbon monoxide from hemoglobin in the blood, restoring oxygen levels to normal and preventing brain and tissue damage.
Radiation Injury 🎯: Patients who have undergone radiation therapy for cancer may develop radiation-induced injuries, such as tissue damage or necrosis. HBOT can help these patients by enhancing oxygen delivery to the damaged tissues, promoting healing, and reducing pain.
Neurological Conditions 🧠: Emerging research suggests that HBOT may have potential benefits for neurological conditions such as traumatic brain injury (TBI) and stroke. By increasing oxygen supply to the brain, HBOT may help reduce swelling, improve cognitive function, and support neurological recovery.
Infections 🦠: HBOT has been shown to be effective in treating certain types of infections, particularly those that are resistant to antibiotics. The therapy enhances the ability of white blood cells to fight infection and can inhibit the growth of certain bacteria.
Safety and Considerations ⚖️
While HBOT is generally considered safe, it’s important to undergo the therapy under medical supervision. Potential side effects include ear barotrauma (due to pressure changes), temporary vision changes, and, in rare cases, oxygen toxicity. Patients with certain medical conditions, such as lung disease or a history of ear surgery, should discuss the risks and benefits of HBOT with their healthcare provider.
Conclusion 🏁
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a powerful and versatile treatment that offers significant benefits across a range of medical conditions. By enhancing the body’s natural healing processes through the delivery of high concentrations of oxygen, HBOT can accelerate recovery, reduce complications, and improve quality of life for patients facing various health challenges.
As research continues to expand our understanding of HBOT, this therapy holds promise for even more applications in the future. Whether it's healing chronic wounds, aiding recovery from brain injuries, or treating life-threatening infections, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a breath of healing power in the world of medicine. With this treatment option, you will be breathing in 100% pure, medical-grade oxygen while you are in a pressurized chamber. This is a chamber that will either be big enough for one person or multiple people. The pure oxygen will then be administered through either a hood or a mask. You will be monitored throughout this entire process to make sure that you are safe. The exact protocol can vary depending on the severity of your injuries.
Why can this work? The thought is that hyperbaric oxygen therapy allows you to breathe pure oxygen within a pressurized environment, which travels to the blood which can then promote the natural healing process and improving how quickly the damaged cells are repaired.
Is It Effective for TBIs?
While this approach has been well-established for a variety of different conditions, there’s still no official evidence that it’s effective for treating TBIs. The data is inconsistent, but there seems to be promise for HBOT as a therapy for TBIs relatively soon after injury. This is the acute stage, which occurs between 1 week and 1 month after your injury. There can be enough evidence to show that during the earliest stages of TBI injury, there can be significant improvements after going through HBOT treatment protocols.
TBI Treatment Protocol with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
As previously mentioned, the exact treatment protocol can vary depending on the severity of the injuries. This is a treatment option that is regulated by the FDA as would happen with any drug treatments on the market. The “dosage” will be determined by how much pressure is in the chamber and how many hours of treatment. These most commonly occur in a hospital setting, with a multiple-user chamber that has a pressure of 2.0 ATM or more. A higher pressure treatment protocol will be used for people with severe TBIs.
Your medical professional will take a closer look at your condition and consider which HBOT treatment protocol would best benefit your specific condition.
Conclusion
Traumatic brain injury rehabilitation can be difficult. With the right treatment plan in place, you can start to recover from your TBI. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can be one tool as part of an overall treatment plan, which can help you recover from your TBI quicker than if you didn’t utilize this tool. You just have to remember that any treatment is going to take time, especially depending on the severity of your TBI. Be patient and follow your treatment closely for the best results.
