My Monarch!
Prompt: Ever since first contact, many alien races have considered humans to be primitive, to the point where we are seen as intelligent animals over our own race. Because of this, many aliens have humans as pets. You are the pampered pet of a very rich alien monarch. Prompt Source: userSuperaptorminion ; subreddit “Writing Prompts”
Most of the time, my life is fantastic- there's a pretty big faction of us, though no one seems to agree on a name except "species traitors". I, however, am of the opinion that if I can live a life of pampered luxury, with no responsibilities, every need taken care of and the only thing asked for in exchange occasional companionship, give me the fucking collar. Fuck capitalism, fuck the grind, fuck all of that shit from back on Earth.
Some kind of Monarch bought me, too, so when I grabbed my mates of choice by the hand and bared my teeth, they laughed, called me cute, and bought them too.
They haven't the slightest clue that we aren't tame, aren't 'just copying them'; like a housecat back home. Sure, you know that your Pomeranian or fat tabby is capable of killing you, if pressed, but you never expect it, because if you treat them well, why would they?
I don't love the Monarch, not really- not like some of the other pet humans do, at any rate. I appreciate that they tend my every need and those of my mates, I pay them with cuddles for providing treatment for my mate's chronic conditions and making them able to pursue what gives them joy again, I tolerate their checks of my own person for such issues (and don't hold it against them when my mates rat out my old injuries), and I enjoy my life of ease. I speak their language- all of us do, because honestly it's funny to watch them lose their shit every time we say intelligible words to them.
Today, however, a threat came to my Monarch- and my Monarch is folding, fearing for the safety of their people and us, the pets, since the challenger is not one of the ones who thinks we are "cute".
This is not acceptable. You see, my Monarch is mine.
Sacrificing themselves for the good of their people is very well and good- but no one is allowed to steal what is mine away from me.
So it is without preamble that I get off my cushion, where I spend most days absorbed in books or writing my own, pressing a button on my wristlet to send a pre-established signal to my mates. One is down in the combat arena, as they always are this time of day, training now that their body obeys them again; the other has been studying intergalactic law, including treaties and declarations of war. In our own language, I consult with them first; I am the culture expert between us, so we have a fairly well-rounded plan when I reach into the side compartment of my Monarch's throne, remove the blaster there, flick it to 'lethal', and shoot all three aliens at the front of the enemy formation.
The clamor and the screaming is enough to give me a migraine, so I am scowling when I step forth, in front of my Monarch, and give them the same hand signal they give me when they want me to move- pointing, paired with a word. They sit.
I turn to the enemy formation, which has sloppily formed up again, though the front three spots, reserved for the leaders, are left conspicuously empty. Good- they had no contingency for if they fell, and no designated people to step into their roles, and without that being pre-established, their culture did not allow for a common soldier to seize command.
It DID allow for 'theft' of the battalion by a conquering commander, though.
"You answer to me now, by right of conquest," I snapped out in their own tongue, prepared to be challenged. The galaxy at large saw us as pets, or PESTS, not as people- someone would challenge that I had the right to claim by conquest at all.
They looked among each other- which was their right to do, to confer if they wanted to challenge whoever had taken out their commanders- before one stepped forward, and I kept my body loose, balanced on the balls of my feet like my mate taught me, but no challenge had been called so I kept still. This one must have been a former commander- a right hand, certainly, because despite not really being able to judge age on their species this soldier was thick with scarring, and though their march never fell out of step, there was the slightest of limps in one of their four legs.
That one knelt down, folded hands on knees, and bent forward, baring the back of their neck in the sign of obedience.
"We are conquered. We answer you."
Oh good.
"I live the life of a Queen, given everything my heart desires, tended to by my mates of choice, given entertainment, food, leisure, and all the time I require to enjoy all of these things. I will not have need of a battalion often- and you are soldiers, loyal and true, battle-tested and strong, so I would not insult you by setting you free. But I have no wish to go out and conquer more, and would not hold a good soldier back from serving honorably elsewhere, for all I can offer is drills and defense should enemies come to invade my holdings, which is rare. If any wish to leave, they are free to find a battalion that fits them better," I told them in my best formal tones. After all, conquering them for my own was only the first step- and if they wouldn't be content to stay, there was no point in keeping them, fostering resentment all along the way.
"A Queen should have guards," the Lieutenant answered, just as formally. "And should a soldier cease to function well as a guard, they may serve perhaps elsewhere."
"As they should, in accordance with their most skilled performance ability," I replied.
"I will stay. My battalion will follow, until they are drawn elsewhere."
"Then be welcome to my service. Your right and left hands?"
Two younger ones with impeccable posture stepped forth, bowed their heads, and held position in the traditional commander's triangle.
"Then it is done. Tend your wounded, honor your dead, then the hale are to report to the combat arena- that is where my right hand trains, and they will know best how to schedule rotations for guard posts. They are my shape and limb arrangement, but with a darker carapace and with the strength of a Soldier apparent in their limbs. My left hand is my shape and limb arrangement as well, but of the same carapace color, and poison-warning blue headfur. His tongue is as dangerous as his color suggests."
My new Commander dipped his head deferentially as he rose to his feet and started directing the battalion. "Understood, my Queen."
Ah. The hazards of using 'queen' with an insectoid species.
Everything settled, I turned my blaster back to stun, put the safety on, and put it in the cubby before climbing up into my Monarch's lap and laying full-body against them in the way they understood meant "I desire my hair and back petted and scratched, NOW".
"I think perhaps our opinion of human pets may be outdated," they said, even as they provided the scratches.
I smiled. "Not really. I'm just a felidae-type human. I don't tolerate people messing with what belongs to me. That includes you. That's how it works, with cats. You don't own us- we own you."
my Monarch looked a little alarmed at that.
I just laughed, and said a joke I knew they would never get until they met an Earth cat: "Meow."

The Grandkiddies: Caleb Steven Hyde (born March 17, 2015) (age 7)
Middle (left to right): Caleb, 18 months. Caleb, 4 years old. Plus, a sneak peek of Caleb as a teen, 16 years old.
@jackieburkhrts, he's the only one developed enough for a moodboard. :)
*****
-Leah and James's son, and E/D and J/H's grandson. He's their first grandkid.
-Eric and Donna are called Poppy and Mina, and Jackie and Hyde are called Pop and Lina.
-Jackie used to call him her "little prince" and put all her attention on him, until the girls came around. He still resents her.
-He's the first of many redheads. Jackie blames Donna.
-He has Hyde and James's icy blue eyes, though, so that's a consolation prize.
*****
-Kindergarten was largely spent in quarantine, and with online learning. Now, he's annoyed that he has to wear pants to school. And shoes.
-Since Eric retired at the beginning of COVID, and Leah went back to work, Caleb basically lives at Eric and Donna's house half of the time. With his twin sisters Abbie and Liv, and his baby brother Rowan.
-Abbie drives him crazy, because she always messes with him. And Jackie and Abbie have a lot in common, so…
-Eric has tried to get Caleb into Star Wars, but to no avail. He's gotten him to tolerate Spiderman, though.
-He also spends a solid chunk of time at Grooves with Hyde and James, too. James's marijuana dispensery next door is off limits, though.
*****
-He loves Minecraft, and hates Fortnite. He likes playing the OG Fallout games when everyone isn't looking.
-He loves Imagine Dragons, Muse, Green Day, The Black Keys, The Rolling Stones, and The Beatles. And Post Malone's "Sunflower" is a guilty pleasure of his.
-Leah got him into reading at an early age, and he reads at a sixth-grade level. He's a huge Harry Potter fan, and he's convinced that he's a Gryffindor.
-Aunt Becca has let him borrow her old Goosebumps books. He's read them all, happily.
-He's often dragged into whatever shenanigans his cousin Declan (via Aunt Becca) and his best friend Wyatt (K/B's grandson) get into.
-He's usually pretty quiet and chill, but he has a tendency to get whiny when in distress. Accompanied by a questionable porky mouth.

‘Choose Your Enemies Carefully’ Book Review  (Fewer Problems)
Tumblr media
SPOILERS
The second book in the early Shadowrun ‘Secrets of Power’ trilogy, is a bit better and quite a bit funnier. Mostly due to the British setting, with Dodger even dropping in on my home port of Bristol. Surrounded by an unfinished biodome in 2051, much of a muchness with our current mayor’s absurdly unsuccessful plans for a new arena and underground. For the record, we never say ‘criminey!’, a ‘rotter’ isn’t a situation but a person, cricket has a ‘first ball’, instead of an ‘opening pitch’, and it isn’t ‘three leopards’ on the shirt.
We do have some twits who hang around Stonehenge pretending to be druids, so it was rather amusing to see some upper class twits remake Wicker Man with all the deftness of Nicholas Cage. I’m not quite clear (again) whether their plan was to place Gordon-Windsor on the throne or sacrifice him in a ‘sacred king’ ritual to gain power, but ‘real’ druids would be speaking Celtic instead of Old English, and sending the Anglo-Saxon invaders back to Germany with their German royals. The Welsh are unhappy enough about an English ‘Prince of Wales’ at the moment, apart from our pinching the whole of England off them.
It was a pity Sam Verner never dropped in on the West End to take in Pirates of Penzance, and the only outlaws as insensibly over-virtuous as himself. Although it’s absurdly contrived that he ends up fighting deranged druids in Blighty at all. Dodger has to forge evidence that his sister is involved, for no good personal reason of his own, except preventing a few murders on the other side of the world. Without apparently knowing at the time that Janice was actually involved in the first place (And grateful for the obese Hyde-White shagging her, according to dear Sam, because orks are so ugly)! Dodger himself is alright though (he even has a cameo in the HBS games). His ‘verily’s are too artificial to be pretentious, much more bearable than fake-RP or mockney would’ve been. Funny voices and laughable accents are more essential to roleplaying than dungeons or dragons; Dodger is essentially a roleplayer placed in a roleplaying game.
As for Sam, the British setting reminds us that his handle of ‘Twist’ is at least appropriate; Oliver Twist was led by the Artful Dodger into a life of crime. He was also an absurdly sanctimonious little goody-goody; better if Sam had gotten out straight away, like Oliver, instead of hanging about as an insufferable prig with one foot in the deep end. Syncretism of shamanism with Christianity is a deep, real topic, the stupidity of bedhopping shadowrunners is a worthy one, but the superficial self-righteousness of everything Sam says or thinks on any topic is nauseating. He finds time to badmouth poor Hanae as well as his ork sister, and Janice’s fall/redemption would make a massively more interesting story; her sections are certainly the best parts of the book, set in a truly treacherous and corrupting Sixth World. An actual story about Sam’s search for his sister might also be worth reading. Poor Hart continues her slide into the ineffectual Bond girl zone; at least sleeping with Sam didn’t destroy Sally’s ability to do her job. Sam’s final takedown of Hyde-White was written considerably better than he deserved.
While it’s still unbelievable that a character like Sam could last a minute in the Shadows, defeat major villains with a few weeks half-hearted training, or get the time of day from Runners like Dodger or Sally if they’d stolen a crate of watches, the good old Shadowrunning action is on display; rather sharper than the last book. Willie quietly and efficiently does good work, Dodger’s matrix warfare and sally against Camelot were strong sections. Although I expected his romance with Megaera, a far-reaching event in Shadowrun history, to get a lot more attention than it did.

Chaka Khan
Tumblr media
Yvette Marie Stevens (born March 23, 1953), better known by her stage name Chaka Khan, is an American singer and songwriter. Her career has spanned nearly five decades, beginning in the 1970s as the lead vocalist of the funk band Rufus. Khan received public attention for her vocals and image. Known as the "Queen of Funk", Khan was the first R&B artist to have a crossover hit featuring a rapper, with "I Feel for You" in 1984. Khan has won ten Grammy Awards and has sold an estimated 70 million records worldwide.
In the course of her solo career, Khan has achieved three gold singles, three gold albums and one platinum album with I Feel for You. With Rufus, she achieved four gold singles, four gold albums, and two platinum albums. She has collaborated with Ry Cooder, Robert Palmer, Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, Guru, Chicago, De la Soul, Mary J. Blige, among others. In December 2016, Billboard magazine ranked her as the 65th most successful dance artist of all time. She was ranked at number 17 in VH1's original list of the 100 Greatest Women of Rock & Roll. She has been nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice; she was first nominated as member of Rufus in 2011.
Early life
Chaka Khan was born Yvette Marie Stevens on March 23, 1953 into an artistic, bohemian household in Chicago, Illinois. The eldest of five children born to Charles Stevens and Sandra Coleman, she has described her father as a beatnik and her mother as "able to do anything." She was raised in the Hyde Park area, "an island in the middle of the madness" of Chicago's rough South Side housing projects. Her sister Yvonne later became a successful musician in her own right under the name Taka Boom. Her only brother, Mark, who formed the funk group Aurra, also became a successful musician. She has two other sisters, Zaheva Stevens and Tammy McCrary.
Khan was raised as a Catholic. She attended the elementary school of Saint Thomas the Apostle Church in Hyde Park. She attributed her love of music to her grandmother, who introduced her to jazz as a child. Khan became a fan of rhythm and blues music as a preteen and at eleven formed a girl group, the Crystalettes, which included her sister Taka. In the late 1960s, Khan attended several civil rights rallies with her father's second wife, Connie, a strong supporter of the movement and joined the Black Panther Party after befriending a fellow member, activist and Chicago native Fred Hampton in 1967. Though many think that she was given the name Chaka while in the Panthers, she has made it clear that her name Chaka Adunne Aduffe Hodarhi Karifi was given to her at age 13 by a Yoruba Baba. In 1969, she left the Panthers and dropped out of high school, having attended Calumet High School and Kenwood High School (now Kenwood Academy). She began to perform in small groups around the Chicago area, first performing with Cash McCall's group Lyfe, which included her then-boyfriend Hassan Khan. Chaka and Hassan married in 1970.
She was asked to replace Baby Huey of Baby Huey & the Babysitters after Huey's death in 1970. The group disbanded a year later. While performing in local bands in 1972, Khan was spotted by two members of a new group called Rufus and soon won her position in the group (replacing rock n roll singer Paulette McWilliams). The group caught the attention of musician Ike Turner who flew them out to Los Angeles to record at his studio Bolic Sound in Inglewood, California. Turner wanted Khan to become an Ikette; she declined stating she was "really happy with Rufus. But Ike's attention was certainly a boost."
Career
1973–1978: Early career with Rufus
In 1973, Rufus signed with ABC Records and released their eponymous debut album. Despite their fiery rendition of Stevie Wonder's "Maybe Your Baby" from Wonder's acclaimed Talking Book and the modest success of the Chaka-led ballad "Whoever's Thrilling You (Is Killing Me)", the album failed to gain attention. That changed when Wonder himself collaborated with the group on a song he had written for Khan. That song, "Tell Me Something Good", became the group's breakthrough hit, reaching number-three on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1974, later winning the group their first Grammy Award. The single's success and the subsequent follow-up, "You Got the Love", which peaked at number eleven on the Billboard Hot 100, helped their second parent album, Rags to Rufus, go platinum, selling over a million copies. From 1974 to 1979, Rufus released six platinum-selling albums including Rufusized, Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan, Ask Rufus, Street Player and Masterjam. Hits the group scored during this time included "Once You Get Started," "Sweet Thing," "Hollywood," "At Midnight (My Love Will Lift You Up)," and "Do You Love What You Feel."
The band gained a reputation as a live performing act, with Khan becoming the star attraction, thanks to her powerful vocals and stage attire—which sometimes included Native American garb and showing her midriff. Most of the band's material was written and produced by the band itself with few exceptions. Khan has also been noted for being an instrumentalist playing drums and bass; she also provided percussion during her tenure with Rufus. Most of her compositions were collaborations with guitarist Tony Maiden. Relations between Khan and the group, particularly between her and Andre Fischer, became stormy. Several members left with nearly every release. While Khan remained in the group, she signed a solo contract with Warner Bros. Records in 1978. While Khan was busy at work on solo material, Rufus released three albums without her participation including 1979's Numbers, 1980's Party 'Til You're Broke, and 1983's Seal in Red.
1978–1983: Early solo career and final years with Rufus
In 1978, Warner Bros. Records released Khan's solo debut album, which featured the crossover disco hit, "I'm Every Woman", written for her by singers-songwriters Ashford & Simpson. The success of the single helped the album go platinum, selling over a million copies. Khan also featured on Quincy Jones's hit, "Stuff Like That", also released in 1978, which also featured Ashford & Simpson as co-writers, along with Jones and several others. Ashford & Simpson performed with Khan on the song.
In 1979, Khan reunited with Rufus to collaborate on the Jones-produced Masterjam, which featured their hit "Do You Love What You Feel", which Khan sang with Tony Maiden. Despite her sometimes-acrimonious relationship with some of her bandmates, Khan and Maiden have maintained a friendship over the years. In 1979 she also dueted with Ry Cooder on his album Bop Till You Drop. In 1980, while Rufus released Party 'Til You're Broke, again without Khan, she released her second solo album, Naughty, which featured her on the cover with her six-year-old daughter Milini. The album yielded the disco hit "Clouds" and the R&B ballad "Papillon".
Also in 1980, Khan had a cameo appearance as a church choir soloist in The Blues Brothers starring John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. Khan released two albums in 1981, the Rufus release, Camouflage and the solo album What Cha' Gonna Do for Me. The latter album went gold. The same year, Khan appeared on three tracks on Rick Wakeman's concept album 1984. In 1982, Khan issued two more solo albums, the jazz-oriented Echoes of an Era and a more funk/pop-oriented self-titled album Chaka Khan. The latter album's track, the jazz-inflected "Be Bop Medley", won Khan a Grammy and earned praise from jazz singer Betty Carter who loved Khan's vocal scatting in the song.
In 1983, following the release of Rufus's final studio album, Seal in Red, which did not feature Khan, the singer returned with Rufus on a live album, Stompin' at the Savoy - Live, which featured the studio single, "Ain't Nobody", which became the group's final charting success reaching number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the Hot R&B chart, while also reaching the top ten in the United Kingdom. Following this release, Rufus separated for good.
1984–1996: Solo success
In 1984, Khan released her sixth studio album, I Feel for You. The title track, the first single released, was originally written and recorded by Prince in 1979 and had also been recorded by The Pointer Sisters and Rebbie Jackson. Khan's version featured a harmonica solo by Stevie Wonder and an introductory rap by Grandmaster Melle Mel. It became a million-selling smash in the U.S. and United Kingdom and helped to relaunch Khan's career. "I Feel for You" topped not only the U.S. R&B and dance charts, but achieved great success on the U.S. pop chart and reached No. 1 in the U.K. The song reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1984 and remained on that chart for 26 weeks, well into 1985. Additionally, it hit No. 1 on the Cash Box chart. It was listed as Billboard′s No. 5 song for 1985 and netted Prince the 1985 Grammy Award for Best R&B Song. In addition to the song's successful radio airplay and sales, a music video of Khan with breakdancers in an inner-city setting enjoyed heavy rotation on television and helped to solidify Khan's notoriety in popular culture.
Other singles that helped the I Feel For You album go platinum included "This is My Night" and the ballad "Through the Fire", the latter of which was also successful on the adult contemporary chart. Khan was featured in Steve Winwood's 1986 number-one hit, "Higher Love". That same year, a duet was planned with Robert Palmer for the song "Addicted To Love". However, her manager declined to release the duet, citing the desire to not have too much product from her in the marketplace at one time. She was still credited for the vocal arrangements in the album's liner notes, and the song became an international hit. Khan followed up the success of the I Feel For You album with 1986's Destiny and 1988's CK. Khan found more success in the late 1980s with a remix album, Life Is a Dance: The Remix Project, which reached the top ten on the British albums chart. As a result, she performed regularly in the U.K., where she maintained a strong fan base.
In 1990, she was a featured performer on another major hit when she collaborated with Ray Charles and Quincy Jones on a new jack swing cover of The Brothers Johnson's "I'll Be Good to You", which was featured on Jones's Back on the Block. The song reached No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the R&B chart, later winning her and Ray Charles a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance By a Duo or Group. Khan returned with her first studio album in four years in 1992 with the release of The Woman I Am, which was a success due to the R&B songs "Love You All My Lifetime" and "You Can Make the Story Right".
Khan also contributed to soundtracks and worked on a follow-up to The Woman I Am she titled Dare You to Love Me, which was eventually shelved. In 1995, she and rapper Guru had a hit with the duet "Watch What You Say", in the U.K. That same year, she provided a contemporary R&B cover of the classic standard, "My Funny Valentine", for the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack. In 1996, following the release of her greatest-hits album, Epiphany: The Best of Chaka Khan, Vol. 1, Khan abruptly left Warner Bros. after stating the label had neglected her and failed to release Dare You to Love Me.
1998–2016
In 1998, Khan signed a contract with Prince's NPG Records label and issued Come 2 My House, followed by the single "Don't Talk 2 Strangers", a cover of a 1996 Prince song. She later went on a tour with Prince as a co-headlining act. In 2000, Khan departed NPG and she released her autobiography Chaka! Through The Fire in 2003. The following year she released her first jazz covers album in twenty-two years with 2004's ClassiKhan. She also covered "Little Wing" with Kenny Olson on the album Power of Soul: A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix. Three years later, after signing with Burgundy Records, Khan released what many critics called a "comeback album" with Funk This, produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis & Big Jim Wright. The album featured the hit, "Angel", and the Mary J. Blige duet, "Disrespectful". The latter track went to number one on the U.S. dance singles chart, winning the singers a Grammy Award, while Funk This also won a Grammy for Best R&B Album. The album was also notable for Khan's covers of Dee Dee Warwick's "Foolish Fool" and Prince's "Sign o' the Times". In 2008, Khan participated in the Broadway adaptation of The Color Purple playing Ms. Sofia to Fantasia Barrino's Celie.
In December 2004, Chaka Khan was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee College of Music during the inauguration of its president, Roger H. Brown.
In a 2008 interview Khan said that she, unlike other artists, felt very optimistic about the current changes in the recording industry, including music downloading. "I'm glad things are shifting and artists – not labels – are having more control over their art. My previous big record company (Warner Bros.) has vaults of my recordings that haven't seen the light of day that people need to hear. This includes Robert Palmer's original recording of 'Addicted to Love' – which they took my vocals off of! We are working on getting it (and other tracks) all back now." In 2009, Khan hit the road with singers Anastacia and Lulu for Here Come the Girls.
In 2009, Chaka was guest singer with the song "Alive" on jazz drummer Billy Cobham's album Drum ' n voice 3. In 2010, she contributed to vocals for Beverley Knight's "Soul Survivor", collaborated with Clay Aiken on a song for the kids show Phineas and Ferb, and performed two songs with Japanese singer Ai on Ai's latest album The Last Ai. Khan continues to perform to packed audiences both in her native United States and overseas.
On May 19, 2011, Khan was given the 2,440th Hollywood Walk of Fame star plaque on a section of Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles. Her family was present when the singer accepted the honor, as was Stevie Wonder, who had written her breakout hit "Tell Me Something Good". On September 27, 2011, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame committee announced that Khan and her former band Rufus were jointly nominated for induction to the hall. It was the collective's first nomination 13 years after they were first eligible. The group were nominated partly due to Khan's own storied reputation, including her own solo career in conjunction with her years with Rufus. Recently, Khan rerecorded her song, "Super Life", under the title "Super Life: Fear Kills, Love Heals" with Eric Benet, Kelly Price, and Luke James in tribute to Trayvon Martin, a teenager who was killed on February 26. A number of celebrities also joined in the recording including Loretta Devine, Terry Crews, Eva Pigford, and reporter Kevin Frazier.
On December 6, 2012, Chaka Khan made a controversial decision to perform at a benefit for the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). The IDF originally invited Stevie Wonder, however after a successful lobbying campaign by the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, Wonder withdrew and was replaced by Khan who was able to raise $14 million for the IDF. This support contrasted with her earlier support for the Black Panther Party that publicly supported a Free Palestine.
On July 27, 2013, Khan was honored 40 years after signing her first recording contract with a ceremonial renaming of Blackstone Avenue between 50th and 51st street (where her former high school, Kenwood Academy, sits) as Chaka Khan Way and on July 28 the city declared the day Chaka Khan Day. She performed at Millennium Park's Pritzker Pavilion on the 28th. In August 2014, Khan served as grand marshal at the 85th annual Bud Billiken Parade and Picnic in her hometown of Chicago.
On August 27, 2015, Khan was announced as one of the celebrities who would compete on season 21 of Dancing with the Stars. She was paired with professional dancer Keo Motsepe. Khan and Motsepe were the first couple eliminated from the competition on September 21, 2015.In July 2016, she canceled concert performances and entered rehab.
2018-present:
Hello Happiness
In June 2018 she released a new single called "Like Sugar", a collaboration with Major Lazer member Switch. She later went on to promote the single on the Ellen show. "Like Sugar" is included on her 2019 album Hello Happiness. The album was released on February 15, 2019 and is her first album in twelve years.
Khan served as Grand Marshal in the 2019 Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on January 1, 2019 in Pasadena, California.
On June 25, 2019, The New York Times Magazine listed Chaka Khan among hundreds of artists whose material was reportedly destroyed in the 2008 Universal fire.
In October 2019, Khan was an honoree at Variety's "Power of Women" luncheon for supporting Little Kids Rock. Other honorees were Mariah Carey, Jennifer Aniston, Brie Larson, Awkwafina, and Dana Walden. In November 2019, Khan collaborated with Ariana Grande on the song "Nobody" from the soundtrack Charlie's Angels.
In 2020, Khan competed in season 3 of The Masked Singer as Miss Monster. She was eliminated and unmasked in the third episode.
Khan was invited to sing the National Anthem at the 2020 NBA All-Star Game. Her rendition has been heavily criticized on Twitter, comparing it to Fergie's rendition in 2018.
Personal life
Khan has been married twice and is the mother of two, daughter Indira Milini and son Damien Holland. Her first marriage was to Hassan Khan, in 1970, when she was 17, which ended in divorce a short time later. Milini's birth was the result of a relationship between Khan and Rahsaan Morris. Khan married her second husband, Richard Holland, in 1976. The marriage reportedly caused a rift between Khan and several members of Rufus, in particular, Andre Fischer. Holland wanted her to tone down her sexy stage image, but she refused. He filed for divorce in 1980, citing "irreconcilable differences." Khan dated a Chicago-area schoolteacher in the mid-1980s in the middle of her solo stardom. Following their separation, Khan moved to Europe, first settling in London, later buying a residence in Germany. She lived in Germany for a while "in a little village in the Rhine Valley" and also in Mannheim.
Khan is vegan, saying she adopted the diet to lose weight and combat high blood pressure and Type-2 diabetes. In the past, Khan struggled with drug abuse and alcoholism. Her drug use, which at times included cocaine and heroin, ended in the early 1990s. Khan had an on-and-off struggle with alcoholism until 2005, declaring herself sober. In 2006, her son Damien Holland was accused of murder after 17-year-old Christopher Bailey was shot to death. Khan testified on her son's behalf. Holland claimed the shooting was an accident. He was acquitted in the criminal trial and found liable in the civil suit. Though she sang at both the 2000 Democratic and Republican conventions, Khan says that she is more of a "Democratic-minded person".
Khan was featured in a 2013 episode of Celebrity Ghost Stories where she told the story of a shadow man who followed her on tour for years, until she met a guardian angel who admonished her to change her life or die.

Unless you wean off the milk, Scriptures = Letters, you cannot desire th... Unless you wean off the milk, Scriptures = Letters, you cannot desire the Meat of Jesus = His Word. THE GOSPEL TRUTH, OUR TREASURES, IS ALWAYS RECEIVED FROM ABOVE, THE WORLD OF LOGICAL REASONING THAT BREWS LOGO = HIS WORD. Unless you wean off the Milk, Scriptures or the dead letters meant for the once-born babies, the Jewish leaven forbidden by Jesus and you start thinking logical to develop Teeth of Logical reasoning to Chew the Flesh of Jesus, our Daily Bread of Life, you cannot be Part of Christ Jesus, our Anointed Royal High Priest. Here is a Youtube Video that I produced on this topic:- https://youtu.be/9FDR0ZpVdjU The Gospel comes from your own heart through intuition and not from the forbidden Scrips, the old wine. Thus, when you go Preaching Tour, do not take any money, two shoes, two tunics or Scrip, the Bible with you for bashing as they do it at the Hyde Park Corner, London. In this Dark Age of Satgur Matt wailah, whatever you do or sow, you get its fruit soon. People of Kashmir used to be known as Guru Brahmin and those of them who became Mohammedans tormented others very badly that they approached the Last Christ = Sixth Satguru Tegh Bahadur Ji for help. Then, Satguru Tegh Bahadur Ji, Commander-in-Chief of Sikhi gave his own sacrifice with his devoted Sikh Soldiers of Humility sealed to serve God. To-day, we are in the End Times and these Kashmiris are ground between the two countries, India and Pakistan to repay for the past deeds. Same applies to Afghanistan who used to attack India and do looting and killing. JESUS HAD NO ONCE-BORN DISCIPLES BUT THE TWICE-BORN LABOURERS. His twice-born Labouring Solitary Brethren/Friends called “Talmidim or Sikhs” and not the once-born natural disciples of the crook Rabbis who disciplined them through the moral laws of Moses. or Freewill. Thus, the substitutes “Disciple and Lord” are the corruptions by the Messianic Jews to set up the same Temple system from the yoke of which Jesus set us FREE by giving his own life as the Lamb of God. Or these robed hireling Dog-Collared Priests in the Churches of Mammon have fulfilled Matt. 12v43-45 making the situation worse than before the arrival of Jesus, the First anointed Christ of our Supernatural Father Elohim, Allah, Parbrahm, etc.: BIRTH OF JOHN, THE BAPTIST, AN IDEAL RABBI MATT 13, V52:- https://youtu.be/RNXvv-WwdI4 and the Proofs of the Virgin Birth of Jesus: - www.gnosticgospel.co.uk/bojes.htm Holy Gospel of our Supernatural Father Elohim, Allah, Parbrahm, etc., delivered First by Jesus, the First Anointed Christ = Satguru of the highest living God Elohim that dwells within our Temple of God called Harmandir or “Emmanuel”. He was the First Anointed Light from our Father and Satguru = Christ Nanak, the Second Anointed Greatest of all the Christs because he had to confront the Kings and Emperors of Darkness of Khatri tribal people (less than one per cent Khatris adopted Sikhism against Jatts = Samaritans 70%) against the people of Judah tribe, the Princes of Darkness. Nanak came in 1469 and Preached The Gospel to Perfection through Five more Lights for 150 years. Still, the Darkness created by Satanic Khatris turned Mullahs couldn’t be comprehended. Gurdwara stands for Gur = Dhanghh = Tareeka which is logical reasoning that Brews Logo, His Word and Dwara means a place of Sangat. So, Gurdwara is the place where GURMUKH Sikhs meet. Gur = logical reasoning and Mukh = Mouth. A mouth that speaks logically is called a Gurmukh. Gur doesn't mean Guru. Satgur means the formula for speaking logical reasoning that Brews = Parshaad = Logo. THE GOSPEL IS CALLED “LOGO” AND LOGO IS THE EXTRACT/NECTAR OF “LOGICAL REASONING” – SATGUR PARSAD. Once-born people are incapable of logical reasoning and, therefore, the logo is for the twice-born people of discerning intellect called the “holy spirit”, surtti or “common sense”. So, if you want The Gospel, then you must think logically over your own heart. Thus, listen to everyone and ponder over it logically in your own heart. Then, the Gospel would be written over the living tablets of heart – 2corn 3. Scriptures, University degrees in “dead letters” will turn you into a super donkey carrying “Holy Books”. “Letter killeth, spirit giveth Life”. Typical Youtube Video on Son of God:- Son represents Father, so in Jesus, we are the sons of Elohim and we should display His qualities for Salvation. https://youtu.be/dQ8pSqeFjQw Four Communities of Religion - One God One Faith:- www.gnosticgospel.co.uk/FourCom.htm Hajj www.gnosticgospel.co.uk/faithfat.pdf Punjabi http://youtu.be/9DqMvO1hb0U Some of my Youtube videos have been banned by Facebook. So, I have shifted them to my website:- www.gnosticgospel.co.uk/Youtbe.htm Flesh + soul = Once-born natural Disciple of the Rabbis Flesh + soul + spirit = Twice-born sensible Labouring son of God John's baptism:- www.gnosticgospel.co.uk/johnsig.pdf Trinity:- www.gnosticgospel.co.uk/trinity.pdf

If the yellow man’s God is of his race let him worship his God as he sees fit. We, as Negroes, have found a new ideal. Whilst our God has no color, yet it is human to see everything through one’s own spectacles, and since the white people have seen their God through white spectacles, we have only now started out (late though it be) to see our God through our own spectacles. The God of Isaac and the God of Jacob let Him exist for the race that believes in the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. We Negroes believe in the God of Ethiopia, the everlasting God — God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost, the One God of all ages. That is the God in whom we believe, but we shall worship Him through the spectacles of Ethiopia. Earnest Alfred Wallace Budge sometime scholar at Christ College Cambridge University and Keeper of Egyptian and Assyrian antiquities in the British Museum publishes his first edition of the Ethiopic "Book of the Glory of Kings/Kebra Negast". 1924 July 4 Julian to make transatlantic flight from New York to Liberia via Atlantic city, New Jersey and the West Indies. Potter professor at the Graduate Institute of International Studies at Geneva who were very well known for their knowledge and refinement in international law.’ ‘Italy on her part selected two Italians from among Italy’s government officials.’ Ethiopia’s clear conscience was aware of the rights due to her and We, therefore, submitted immediately our request to Italy to settle the matter on the basis of the text of the treaty, referring to the treaty concluded in 1928, by which Italy had undertaken that peace and friendship should forever persist between us and that, if a quarrel arose between us, this quarrel should have a peacful outcome on the authorative verdict of arbitrators. Royal baby latest news: New prince meets family as world awaits name announcement - The Telegraph
Tumblr media
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have begun introducing their new prince to family members, as the world awaits an announcement on the baby’s name.
Prince William and Kate have retreated to the sanctuary of Kensington Palace after showing off their third child to the world on the steps of the Lindo Wing.
As the Duke and Duchess settle into life as a family of five, the first visitors began arriving at their west London home on Tuesday. Pippa Middleton, the Duchess’s sister, was the first to be pictured after meeting the as-yet-unnamed baby.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could have been the first to visit as they are neighbours at Kensington Palace. The new baby prince’s great-grandmother the Queen, 92, is still at Windsor Castle with the Duke of Edinburgh who is recuperating after a hip operation.
Prince Charles said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon that he and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, are “both so pleased at the news”. He added: “It is a great joy to have another grandchild, the only trouble is I don’t know how I am going to keep up with them.”
The name of the baby Prince of Cambridge, who was born on Monday at 11.01am weighing 8lb 7oz, has yet to be unveiled. Royals traditionally keep the public guessing before revealing their choice and William and Kate will want to share the name with the Queen and the rest of their family before making it public.
Kensington Palace said the name would be announced in “due course” but the favourite at the bookies is currently Arthur, followed by James, Philip and Albert.
The Duke fuelled speculation about the name of his new baby boy, telling a man who suggested he could suit Prince Alexander: “Funny you should say that…”
William, who left his two-day-old son with the Duchess to attend a commemoration service, teased attendees about the as-yet-unknown name, as the world waited to hear what the Prince would be called.
Told by Alexander Downer, the Australian High Commissioner, that he favoured his own Christian name as a frontrunner for the Prince, the Duke replied: “Funny you should say that… It’s a good name.”
The Dean of Westminster, introducing the Duke to Mr Downer’s New Zealand counterpart Sir Jerry Mateparae, joked: “And Jerry would like it to be Jerry”.
“It’s a strong name, I have to say,” the Duke conceded smiling, speaking publicly for the first time since he took his new addition home from hospital.
The Duke joined his brother Prince Harry and soon-to-be sister-in-law Meghan Markle at Westminster Abbey for an Anzac Day service, but the topic of conversation quickly turned to the new Prince.
Asked how the Duchess and the baby were doing, Prince William said: “They’re very well thanks.”
The now father-of-three said they are “in good form, luckily”, and added: “Sleeping’s going reasonably well so far, so he’s behaving himself which is good news.”
While the Duke’s words stoked further speculation about the possibility of a Prince Alexander, the name is not likely to be a final contender as it is one of Prince George’s middle names.

Born fifth in line, the baby is the Queen and Philip’s sixth great-grandchild and Kensington Palace said the couple, along with the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry, and the Middletons, were delighted with the news of the new arrival.
George and Charlotte, who visited their new sibling at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London, on Monday afternoon, are likely to be at school and nursery on Tuesday.
At 2pm on Tuesday, gun salutes were fired in London by the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery in Hyde Park and the Honourable Artillery Company at the Tower of London to mark the birth.

Punters back James and Henry… but Arthur remains bookies’ favourite
Punters have been racing to place bets on the possible name of the royal baby boy, with James and Henry catching favourite Arthur.
Bookies still have the moniker of the legendary king as their top name, but are seeing Royal fans taking a punt on other choices facing the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams said: “Henry has been very popular overnight and might well be in the frame.”
The firm has Arthur as 2-1 favourite, but the odds on Henry have been shortened from 14-1 to 10-1.
Other popular names include James 4/1, Phillip 5/1 and Albert 6/1.
Coral spokesman Harry Aitkenhead said: “Arthur is the hot favourite at the moment and ever since the birth yesterday our customers have been queuing up to get their bets on.
“James, Albert and Philip have also been backed and anything else would be a major shock.”
He added their favourite was Arthur 2-1, followed by James 4-1, Albert 5-1, Philip 6-1, and Alexander and Henry both with odds of 12-1.

Royal history of Arthur… and other names new prince could be given
Arthur
A middle name of the Prince of Wales, Arthur is also one of Prince William’s middle names as well as the Queen’s father, George VI.
The legendary King Arthur was the mythical leader of the knights of the Round Table, who supposedly lived in the 5th or 6th century.
Once popular, the name fell out of fashion, but has had a revival in recent years. Former prime minister David Cameron has a son called Arthur.
Albert
Queen Victoria used to insist that the name Albert was used as a middle name by her descendants, if not a first, in honour of her much-loved consort Prince Albert.
By choosing Albert or Bertie for a boy, the Duke and Duchess would be honouring Queen Elizabeth II’s father, George VI, who was actually Albert Frederick Arthur George but always known to his family as Bertie.
Shy, stammering Bertie was forced to become king when his brother Edward VIII abdicated, but won the nation’s affection by standing firm in London during the Second World War.
Philip
A lasting tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh might see the new Prince of Cambridge called Philip.
Both Prince Charles and Prince William have Philip as a middle name.
The Duke of Edinburgh – known for his dedication to duty and his acerbic wit – has been married to the Queen for more than 70 years and is the nation’s longest serving consort.
Frederick
A Prince Freddie of Cambridge would have a historical link to the 1st Duke of Cambridge.
Prince Adolphus Frederick lived from 1774 to 1850 and was a son of George III.
He was apparently very fond of interrupting church services by bellowing out “By all means” if the priest said “Let us pray”.
Charles
William may want to pay tribute to his father – but perhaps as a middle name as it may be considered too similar to Charlotte.
James
James could be chosen to signify the Duchess’s affection for her brother, the baby’s uncle, James Middleton.
William already has a cousin James, the Earl and Countess of Wessex’s son, Viscount Severn.
James is a Stuart name. James I, son of Mary, Queen of Scots, had been king of Scotland for 36 years as James VI when he became king of England in 1603.
Other names
They could choose William as a middle name for a boy, but also perhaps Michael as a middle name out of respect for Kate’s father.
Kate’s grandfather on her paternal side was called Peter, while on her maternal side, her grandfather was Ronald.
Thomas also appears several times in Kate’s family tree, as does Francis.

Who will be godparents to the new Baby Cambridge?
When it comes to godparents, the youngest Cambridge child might well be dealt the best hand yet. After seven years of marriage (and three children), the Duke and Duchess now know exactly who their real friends are.
Plus, with 12 godparents between them, Prince George and Princess Charlotte have already ticked off all those their parents felt obliged to ask. Admittedly a few of their oldest and best friends have already been bagged – Emilia d’Erlanger, for example, is George’s godmother and Prince William’s friend, Tom Van Straubenzee belongs to Chalotte – but there are plenty more of their friends waiting in the wings, as well as a few close cousins.

Arthur is bookies’ favourite – but James most popular with punters
Arthur remains the bookmakers’ favourite for the new Royal baby’s name, but James is the most popular for individual wagers placed with Ladbrokes.
James  has seen the largest amount of bets and money placed since the Duchess of Cambridge gave birth.
It is the same name as the Duchess of Cambridge’s brother, James Middleton. Prince William also has a cousin James, Viscount Severn.
Despite being the favourite in the betting at 2/1, Arthur is left for second spot in the Top 10 list, followed by Albert (5/1), Philip (6/1) and Henry (12/1), according to Ladbrokes.
Jessica Bridge, of Ladbrokes, said:  “Over 100,000 bets have placed across the UK betting industry on the baby name, and punters are eagerly awaiting the announcement from Kensington Palace to see if they will be quids in.”

Baby prince’s first achievement is to make history for gender equality
By welcoming a baby prince, William and Kate are following the birth pattern of the Queen and Philip’s children – a son, a daughter and then another son.
The Queen and the Duke had Prince Charles, then Princess Anne, followed by, after a gap of 10 years, Prince Andrew, with a fourth child, Prince Edward, born four years later.

Duke says couple are ‘very happy’ but have ‘thrice the worry now’
Smiling broadly, the Duchess was dressed in a vibrant red Jenny Packham dress with a white lace collar, reminiscent of William’s late mother Diana, Princess of Wales – who wore red and white outside the Lindo Wing after Prince Harry was born in 1984.
As William and Kate headed home after appearing in front of the banks of cameras with their seven-hour-old son, the Duke said they were “very happy” and “very delighted”.
He joked, holding up three fingers, that he had “thrice the worry now”, adding: “We didn’t keep you waiting too long this time.”

Kensington Palace said: “Their Royal Highnesses would like to thank all staff at the hospital for the care and treatment they have received.
“They would also like to thank everyone for their warm wishes.”

LONDON | Prince charming: Kate gives birth to boy, home by suppertime
Tumblr media
LONDON | April 23, 2018 (AP)(STL.News) Third time’s a charm. The Duchess of Cambridge gave birth Monday morning to a new prince who is fifth in line to the British throne — and she was home by suppertime.
The duchess and husband Prince William drove to St. Mary’s Hospital in London early in the morning, and Kate’s 8 pound, 7 ounce (3.8 kilogram) boy was born at 11:01 a.m., with royal officials announcing the birth about two hours later.
There followed a smoothly choreographed operation perfected after the births of the couple’s two other children. In late afternoon, elder siblings Prince George and Princess Charlotte were brought to meet their baby brother. Around 6 p.m. and wearing a vibrant red dress, Kate emerged alongside her husband, holding the tiny royal highness, wrapped in a white lace shawl.
After posing for dozens of photographers and camera crews outside the hospital’s private Lindo Wing, the trio headed home, with the baby nestled securely in a car seat. Television news helicopters followed the royal Range Rover as it made the mile (1.6 kilometer) journey to the family’s Kensington Palace residence.
William declared the couple “very delighted” with the new addition to the family.
The royal palace said “the queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news.” Prime Minister Theresa May offered “warmest congratulations.”
News of the royal birth came with a mix of tradition and modernity typical of Britain’s media-savvy royal family. It was announced on Twitter and also proclaimed in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace with a framed notice perched on a golden easel.
Tony Appleton, a town crier from southeast England, showed up in full regalia to declare the newborn prince’s birth outside the hospital. The words “It’s a boy” flashed in lights around the top of London’s BT Tower, which can be seen for miles around.
More ceremonial celebration will come Tuesday, including the pealing of bells at Westminster Abbey and a gun salute in London’s Hyde Park.
The baby is a younger brother to 4-year-old Prince George and Princess Charlotte, who turns 3 next week. Both were born at the same hospital, as were William and his younger brother, Prince Harry.
The infant’s name, which has been subject to a flurry of bets, is likely to be announced in the next few days. Arthur and James are among bookmakers’ favorites for the new prince, whose full title will be His Royal Highness, Prince (Name) of Cambridge.
“You’ll find out soon enough,” William said when asked about the baby’s name.
Monday is St. George’s Day, England’s national day, but the baby is unlikely to be given the name since his older brother already has it.
The new arrival is Queen Elizabeth II’s sixth great-grandchild and bumps Prince Harry to sixth place in the line of succession. The baby is fifth in line, after grandfather Prince Charles, father Prince William and his two siblings.
Charlotte is the first royal daughter to stay ahead of a younger brother in the line of succession. Before the rules were changed in 2012, male heirs took precedence.
Kensington Palace announced in September that Kate was pregnant with her third child. As in her previous pregnancies, the duchess suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe form of morning sickness.
Officials announced her previous pregnancies before the traditional 12-week mark because she was too unwell to attend public engagements. This time around, it kept her from taking George to his first day of school.
The 36-year-old duchess, formerly Kate Middleton, nevertheless kept up a busy schedule of royal duties during her pregnancy, including a visit with William to Scandinavia. She carried out her last official engagement on March 22 before going on maternity leave.
The birth was overseen by a team of doctors including consultant obstetrician Guy Thorpe-Beeston and consultant gynecologist Alan Farthing — who were also called in for the births of George and Charlotte — as well as the hospital’s midwives.
Television crews, journalists and royal fans had set up camp outside the hospital for the “royal baby watch” since early April in anticipation of the arrival.
John Loughrey, a veteran royal-watcher who camped outside the hospital for two weeks, said the baby would be “very good for our country and of course Her Majesty the queen.”
“I’m so pleased it’s St. George’s Day,” he said before the birth was announced. “St. George himself would be very pleased if the baby’s born today.”

Chaka Khan
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chaka Khan (born Yvette Marie Stevens; March 23, 1953) is an American recording artist whose career has spanned five decades, beginning in the 1970s as the frontwoman and focal point of the funk band Rufus. Widely known as the Queen of Funk, Khan has won ten Grammys and has sold an estimated 70 million records worldwide. Khan was ranked at number 17 in VH1's original list of the 100 Greatest Women of Rock & Roll. In 2015, she was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the second time; she was previously nominated as member of Rufus in 2011. Khan was the first R&B artist to have a crossover hit featuring a rapper, with "I Feel for You" in 1984. In the course of her solo career, Khan has achieved three gold singles, three gold albums and one platinum album with I Feel for You. With Rufus, she achieved four gold singles, four gold albums, and two platinum albums. In December 2016, Billboard magazine ranked her as the 65th most successful dance artist of all-time.
1953–1972: Early life
Chaka Khan was born Yvette Marie Stevens on March 23, 1953 into an artistic, bohemian household in Chicago, Illinois. She is the eldest of five children born to Charles Stevens and Sandra Coleman, and has described her father as a beatnik and her mother as 'able to do anything.' She was raised in the Hyde Park area, 'an island in the middle of the madness' of Chicago's rough South Side housing projects. Her sister Yvonne later became a successful musician in her own right under the name Taka Boom. Her only brother, Mark, who formed the funk group Aurra, also became a successful musician. She has two other sisters, Zaheva Stevens and Tammy McCrary .
Chaka Khan was raised as a Catholic. She attributed her love of music to her grandmother, who introduced her to jazz as a child. Khan became a fan of rhythm and blues music as a pre-teen and at eleven formed a girl group, the Crystalettes, which included her sister Taka. In the late 1960s, Khan attended several civil rights rallies with her father's second wife, Connie, a strong supporter of the movement, and joined the Black Panther Party after befriending fellow member, activist, and Chicago native Fred Hampton in 1967. Though many think that she was given the name Chaka while in the Panthers she has made it clear that her name Chaka Adunne Aduffe Hodarhi Karifi was given to her at age 13 by a Yoruba Baba. In 1969, she left the Panthers and dropped out of high school, having attended Calumet High School and Kenwood High School (now Kenwood Academy). She began to perform in small groups around the Chicago area, first performing with Cash McCall's group Lyfe, which included her then boyfriend Hassan Khan, whom she would later marry.
She was asked to replace Baby Huey of Baby Huey & the Babysitters after Huey's death in 1970. The group disbanded a year later. While performing in local bands in 1972, she was spotted by two members of a new group called Rufus and soon won her position in the group (replacing rock and roll singer Paulette McWilliams). They later signed with ABC Records in 1973. Prior to signing with the label, she married on-and-off boyfriend Hassan Khan, changing her stage name to Chaka Khan.
Career
1973–1978: Early career with Rufus
In 1973, Rufus released their eponymous debut album. Despite their fiery rendition of Stevie Wonder's "Maybe Your Baby" from Wonder's acclaimed Talking Book and the modest success of the Chaka-led ballad "Whoever's Thrilling You (Is Killing Me)", the album failed to garner attention.
The band gained a reputation as a live performing act with Khan becoming the star attraction, thanks to her powerful vocals and stage attire which sometimes included Native American garb and showing her midriff. While Khan remained a member of the group, she signed a solo contract with Warner Bros.
Records released Khan's solo debut album, which featured the crossover disco hit, "I'm Every Woman", written for her by songwriters Ashford & Simpson. The success of the single helped the album go gold, selling over a million copies. Khan also was a featured performer on Quincy Jones's hit, "Stuff Like That", also released in 1978.
In 1979 she also duetted with Ry Cooder on his album Bop Till You Drop. In 1980, while Rufus released Party 'Til You're Broke, again without Khan, she released her second solo album, Naughty, which featured her on the cover with her six-year-old daughter Milini. The album yielded the disco hit "Clouds" and the R&B ballad "Papillon".
Also in 1980, she had a cameo appearance as a church choir soloist in The Blues Brothers with John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd.
The title track was the first single released. Originally written and recorded by Prince in 1979, it had also been recorded by The Pointer Sisters and Mary Wells. Khan's version featured a harmonica solo by Stevie Wonder and an introductory rap by Grandmaster Melle Mel. It became a million-selling smash in the U.S. and United Kingdom and helped to relaunch Khan's career. "I Feel for You" topped not only the U.S. R&B and dance charts, but achieved great success on the U.S. pop chart and reached #1 in the United Kingdom. The song reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1984 and remained on that chart for 26 weeks, well into 1985. Additionally, it hit #1 on the Cash Box chart. It was listed as Billboard′s #5 song for 1985 and netted Prince the 1985 Grammy Award for Best R&B Song. In addition to the song's successful radio airplay and sales, a music video of Khan with break dancers in an inner-city setting enjoyed heavy rotation on television and helped to solidify Khan's notoriety in popular culture.
Other singles which helped the I Feel For You album to go platinum included "This is My Night" and the ballad "Through the Fire", the latter of which was also very successful on the adult contemporary chart. Khan was featured in Steve Winwood's 1986 number one hit, "Higher Love". That same year, a duet was planned with Robert Palmer for the song "Addicted To Love". However, her manager declined to allow the duet to be released, citing the desire to not have too much product from her in the marketplace at one time; she was still credited for the vocal arrangements in the album's liner notes, and the song became an international hit. Khan followed up her successful I Feel For You album with 1986's Destiny and 1988's CK. Khan found more success in the late 1980s with a remix album, Life Is a Dance: The Remix Project, which reached the top ten on the British albums chart. As a result, she performed regularly in the United Kingdom, where she maintained a strong fan base.
In 1990, she was a featured performer on another major hit when she collaborated with Ray Charles and Quincy Jones on a new jack swing cover of The Brothers Johnson's "I'll Be Good to You", which was featured on Jones's Back on the Block. The song reached #18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the R&B chart, later winning her and Ray Charles a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance By a Duo or Group. Khan returned with her first studio album in four years in 1992 with the release of The Woman I Am, which was a success thanks to the R&B songs "Love You All My Lifetime" and "You Can Make the Story Right".
Khan also contributed to soundtracks and worked on a follow-up to The Woman I Am which she titled Dare You to Love Me, which was eventually shelved. In 1995, she and rapper Guru had a hit with the duet "Watch What You Say", in the United Kingdom.
1998–present
In 1998, Khan signed a contract with Prince's NPG Records label and issued Come 2 My House, followed by the single "Don't Talk 2 Strangers", a cover of a 1996 Prince song. Khan later went on a tour with Prince as a co-headlining act. In 2000, Khan departed from NPG and in 2004 released her first jazz covers album in twenty-two years with 2004's ClassiKhan. She also covered "Little Wing" with Kenny Olson on the album Power of Soul: A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix. Three years later, after signing with Burgundy Records, Khan released what many critics called a "comeback album" with Funk This, produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis & Big Jim Wright The album featured the hit, "Angel", and the Mary J. Blige duet, "Disrespectful". The latter track went to number one on the U.S. dance singles chart, winning the singers a Grammy Award, while Funk This also won a Grammy for Best R&B Album. The album was notable for Khan's covers of Dee Dee Warwick's "Foolish Fool" and Prince's "Sign o' the Times". In 2008, Khan participated in the Broadway adaptation of The Color Purple playing Ms. Sofia to Fantasia Barrino's Celie.
This support contravened her earlier support for the Black Panther Party that publicly supported a Free Palestine.
On August 27, 2015, Khan was announced as one of the celebrities who will compete on season 21 of Dancing with the Stars. She was paired with professional dancer Keo Motsepe. Khan and Motsepe were the first couple eliminated from the competition on September 21, 2015.
In July 2016, she canceled concert performances and entered rehab.
Personal life
Khan has been married twice and is the mother of two children, daughter Indira Milini and son Damien Holland. Her first marriage was to Hassan Khan, in 1970, when she was 17. They divorced a short time later. Milini's birth was the result of a relationship between Khan and Rahsaan Morris. Khan married her second husband, Richard Holland, in 1976. The marriage reportedly caused a rift between Khan and several members of Rufus, in particular, Andre Fischer. Khan dated a Chicago-area schoolteacher in the mid-1980s in the middle of her solo stardom.
Khan had an on-and-off struggle with alcoholism until 2005 declaring herself sober. In 2006, her son Damien Holland was accused of murder after 17-year-old Christopher Bailey was shot to death. Khan testified on her son's behalf defending her son's innocence. Holland claimed the shooting was an accident and was found not guilty. Though she sang at both the 2000 Democratic and Republican conventions, Khan says that she is more of a "Democratic-minded person".
In December 2011, Khan won permanent custody of her granddaughter, Daija Jade Holland, after reporting that Daija's mother, the girlfriend of Khan's son Damien Holland, was unable to raise her due to her drug addiction. The media reported that Khan's son was also addicted to drugs.
Khan was featured in a 2013 episode of Celebrity Ghost Stories where she told the story of a shadow man who followed her on tour for years, until she met a guardian angel who admonished her to change her life or die.

10 NFL veterans on the roster bubble
Training camp presents a bit of a mixed bag for NFL players. Every team enters the season with the potential to go on and win the Super Bowl, which is a good feeling. But before the regular season begins, players have to fight for jobs. Making an NFL roster is extremely difficult as even veterans are not safe from being cut.
Each year there are countless surprises when final cuts come through and teams break camp. Here’s a look at 10 NFL veterans who are on the roster bubble and in danger of potentially being cut, released or traded.
10. Geno Smith, QB, New York Giants
When the Giants initially signed Geno Smith, the move came as a surprise to many. But despite inking a one-year deal, Smith’s spot on the 53-man roster is far from guaranteed. In fact, he finds himself in an uphill battle, working to overcome a torn ACL while needing to beat out fellow quarterback Josh Johnson, who has experience in the Giants’ offensive system.
After having selected California quarterback Davis Webb in the third-round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the Giants will have only one spot available to back up iron-man quarterback Eli Manning.
Smith, who was a second-round pick of the New York Jets in 2013, never materialized for Gang Green and has been widely considered a bust. However, on the other side of town, Smith has embraced his situation and worked hard this offseason to revitalize his career and prove he’s worthy of another chance in the NFL.
So far in training camp, Smith has looked healthy and, at times, quite capable. However, he hasn’t completely separated himself from Johnson and will remain very much on the bubble throughout camp and the preseason.
9. Graham Gano, kicker, Carolina Panthers
Graham Gano has been the Panthers’ kicker since 2012, but his struggles in 2016 were well-documented. He made only 78.9% of his field goal attempts — his lowest mark as a Panther — and missed six field goals from over 40 yards. He also failed to convert on three point after attempts.
In response to Gano’s struggles, Carolina did something they had never before done in their history: they selected a kicker in the NFL Draft.
The Panthers snatched up Harrison Butker in the seventh round, which isn’t considered a throw-away pick. Although he’s since been fired, general manager Dave Gettleman values every pick and uses them on players he believes will help the team.
Although Gano embraces the training camp competition, it’s the first time he’s faced legitimate heat as a Panther. He’ll need to win the kicking job outright or he’ll be given a pink slip on cut-down day.
8. DeAngelo Hall, FS, Washington Redskins
In 2015, DeAngelo Hall switched from full-time cornerback to safety for the Redskins, which was done to prolong the 33-year-old’s career. However, after suffering a torn ACL in 2016, Hall has now missed 31 of the last 48 regular season games. Add in that he’s got a salary cap hit of $3.11 million (dead cap of only $812,500) and it’s a potentially rough situation for the veteran.
The Redskins also signed D.J. Swearinger and moved Su’a Cravens from linebacker to safety, further boosting competition at the position. The competition includes Will Blackmon, who has served as their primary backup.
Given that Hall is relatively inexperienced at the position, is oft-injured and comes at a fairly high cost, he could be on the hot seat. As it stands, Hall opened up camp on the PUP list. If he’s not able to come back healthy, perform well during the preseason and beat out some of the younger players, his future could be in jeopardy.
7. Kyle Fuller, CB, Chicago Bears
Kyle Fuller was a first-round pick of the Bears in 2014 and appeared in 32 games (30 starts) over his first two seasons, recording 119 tackles (98 solo), three interceptions and 19 passes defensed. However, he missed the entire 2016 season after having his knee scoped and fell out of favor with the team’s new coaches/front office.
This offseason, Chicago went to work on their secondary, adding projected starters Prince Amukamara and Marcus Cooper. They also declined Fuller’s fifth-year option.
The Bears may owe Fuller a $1,740,954 guaranteed salary in 2017, but he may not be with the team much longer. He’s essentially lost his starting job, does not appear to be in the team’s plans for the future, and is now a lame duck at his position.
If Fuller does not come out and perform well in both training camp and the preseason, it’s possible the Bears cut him loose. But even if he does play solidly, Chicago could look to trade him.
6. Ryan Mathews, RB, Philadelphia Eagles
Ryan Mathews is a rather obvious addition to this list given that his release is already expected. However, with training camps underway and the preseason in its early stages, Mathews has hung onto a roster spot, ironically, because of an injury.
Because Mathews is still nursing a herniated disc in his neck — an injury suffered in Week 16 of last season — the Eagles can’t afford to release him. If released now, he would count for more than $1.1 million against their limited cap space.
Although Mathews would have a dead cap hit of $1 million is released while healthy, it makes more sense for the Eagles to wait until he can pass a physical — which is exactly what they’re doing.
With the additions of veteran LeGarrette Blount and rookie Donnel Pumphrey, coupled with a total cap hit of $5 million this season, it’s clear that when Mathews is finally healthy enough to play, he’ll no longer be an Eagle.
5. Brandon Bolden, RB, New England Patriots
The Patriots are never shy about cycling through their roster to find the right fits and ideal role players, and that often leads to the release or trades of unexpected players.
One such player in 2017 could be running back Brandon Bolden, who has managed to carve out a niche role in each of the last five seasons. However, with the additions of Mike Gillislee and Rex Burkhead, as well as James White being a roster lock, Bolden could be the odd man out in New England.
Bolden is coming off his least productive season with the Patriots, having been given only a single rushing attempt in 2016, and would have to beat out both Dion Lewis and D.J. Foster to potentially earn himself a roster spot.
With a salary cap hit of only $695,000, a decision on Bolden certainly won’t be financially motivated. But that’s unlikely to be a saving grace for the NFL veteran.
4. Carlos Hyde, RB, San Francisco 49ers
Seeing Carlos Hyde’s name here might come as a bit of a surprise to many, but as the 49ers look to continue their intensive rebuild, it’s entirely possible they want to go with a younger player.
Hyde still has a lot to offer, but he joined San Francisco three head coaches ago. And throughout the offseason, head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch seemed lukewarm on him at best. Add in that the team traded up in the fourth round of the NFL Draft to select Joe Williams, and it would seem they have a specific plan in mind.
Shanahan has been especially high on Williams, and early reviews on the former Ute have been relatively positive. That’s not to say the cost-effective Hyde hasn’t stood out himself — he has — but like some other veterans on this list, the writing may be on the wall for Hyde.
Hyde may have the best chance at sticking of anyone on this list, but his seat is a bit warmer than some may realize.
3. Sammie Coates, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers
In the literal minutes after the Steelers selected USC wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster in the second-round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Martavis Bryant hit Twitter to let the world know that Smith-Schuster was Sammie Coates’ replacement.
Coates played it off like a joke, but Bryant didn’t appear to be joking. And given that Antonio Brown, Bryant, Eli Rogers and Smith-Schuster are all roster locks, there is little wiggle room for Coates and the others vying for a position.
On the plus side, Coates showed what he could do over the first five games of last season, hauling in 19 receptions for 421 yards and two touchdowns, but then it was all downhill from there. Hand and finger injuries limited Coates to only two receptions for the remainder of the regular season, and with a dead cap hit of only $157,881 in 2017, he is susceptible to being cut.
At the end of the day, Coates is in a “play well this preseason or else” scenario. He will legitimately have to earn himself a spot on the 53-man roster, and after missing the start of camp after having his knee scoped, he faces an uphill battle.
2. Jamaal Charles, RB, Denver Broncos
Jamaal Charles may have been a big-name acquisition for the Broncos this offseason, but the one-year, $1,000,000 contract is proof that he’s not being relied upon to come in and start.
Still, Charles will compete with C.J. Anderson for carries and provides Denver some security if things don’t go according to plan throughout training camp and the preseason. But should Anderson rebound after a torn meniscus ended his 2016 season, Charles’ cup of coffee could run dry quickly.
In addition to Charles and Anderson, the Broncos also have Devontae Booker and sixth-round pick De’Angelo Henderson in the mix.
Charles suffered a torn ACL in 2015 and then had a setback in 2016, which led to a second consecutive season-ending surgery. He had also previously suffered a torn ACL in 2011. Simply put, Charles’ health always makes his status a concern.
1. Brock Osweiler, QB, Cleveland Browns
When the Browns traded for Brock Osweiler and a second-round pick in March, the belief was that they would turn around and attempt to trade him right back out of town. It was either that, and likely eat his guaranteed $16 million salary, or release him.
To date, neither of those things have materialized. For now, Brock seems to be sticking in Cleveland.
Osweiler’s future remains to be seen, but it’s obvious he is walking on very thin ice. And as well as he performed in mini-camp, much of the first-team work went to Cody Kessler and rookie second-round pick DeShone Kizer.
Still, Osweiler was tabbed the team’s starting quarterback for their preseason opener, and they seem to want take things slowly in developing Kizer. But if Kizer keeps looking good, he could force Cleveland’s hand, thus making Osweiler expendable.
