(August 2024.)
I had a terrible (great) idea for a song mashup the other day, so me + @greenswing + JashuoN on Twitter collaborated to make this mashup REAL.
I also made the thumbnail/video art! JashuoN made the SA2 logo.
I ALSO.... drew my Metal for this vid too... ///

Thanks to Hyadain I now irrevocably associate a good 50% of MegaMan 2's OST with gay sex

If you're ever feeling down about not having accomplished anything in your current age:
About 15 years ago, a man by the name of Kenichi Maeyamada (aka Hyadain) released a parody remix of 'The Battle with Four Fiends' from Final Fantasy IV. The lyrics include a bit of NSFW jokes (namely Cagnazzo having a 'turtle head', which is a penis joke), but it's a fucking bop.
youtube
Putting read more here:
Mind you, he made this in his late 20s, along with a variety of other songs including Mega Man 2 themes being remixed into love and sex ballads, a stellar remix of Dragon Quest 4's casino theme being made into characters feuding over poker, and a completely stunning rendition of the Final Fantasy theme WITH LYRICS!
youtube
Mind you: After a while, he stopped doing these videos, as he became busy making quite of a bit of music for J-Pop musicians and anime intros.
Probably one of my favorite anime intros is the one he did for Nichijou, which is such an amazing comedy anime. Don't get me started. It is so my humor, and also, the intros are so, so good and cute.
youtube
He's still making music to this day, but the funniest bit of the story happened last year. Hyadain is in his early 40s at this point, and last year, SquareEnix confront him asking for him to make a song for one of their games.
I SHIT YOU NOT: THEY ASKED HIM TO MAKE A BOSS THEME REMIX OF 'THE BATTLE OF FOUR FIENDS' (THE SAME SONG HE PARODIED AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS POST) FOR THE AWARD WINNING MMORPG EXPANSION: FINAL FANTASY XIV ENDWALKER!
youtube
And it's such a fucking banger! In the comments, you can see people reference some of the lyrics from Hyadain's parody. It's so good.
Like, I'm not going to say Hyadain has lived this legacy where he is a god we all need to bow down to. But he's made some pretty awesome stuff over the years.
Anyway. I just thought this whole story was cool, and felt like sharing.

ok, maybe I already posted this, but damn, FFXIV music team be someone on the music team* need to do a variation on the Battle of the Four Fiends be inspired by a super famous parody song by another Japanese composer from the 2000s kill so many players who couldn't do the fight because they were laughing also I am hoping y'all and Hyadain are also laughing about this joke together!!! links under the cut so the fight/songs aren't spoiled for anyone * people are variously saying Soken/Takafumi Imamura, I don't have enough of an ear for music to tell. I wish I knew where to look this up before the soundtrack's official release...
This is the original Battle of the Four Fiends
youtube
This is the 2000s Hyadain parody remix, on the composer's own channel:

Here's that same remix, but with the text + hilarious visuals:

Finding out that Hyadain wrote one of my favorite Koda Kumi songs feels the same as when I found out that the chainsaw man op was written by the Matryoshka guy, or when I learned the potion seller wrote challengers. These guys are from the internet. What are they doing somewhere else?

Not-the-Usual Christmas Music, Day 11
So this is going to be me posting not-the-usual Christmas music, from the 20th through the 31st. I’ve wanted to do this for a while, just share songs that don’t generally pop up on the Christmas radio loop. Some are funny, some are poignant, some are religious, some are secular. Just doing something pleasant at the end of the year.
Day 11: Kurisumasu? Nani sore? Oishii no? by Hyadain
youtube
Explaining the context of this bit of Japanese cultural ephemera that was popular when I was over there is going to take a bit, so grab a seat.
First of all, Christmas in Japan is treated as a romantic holiday, a date night holiday, versus New Year's which is more traditional and family-oriented, essentially the opposite of America. In as much as anyone celebrates the holiday you're more likely to have Christmas cake than a Christmas tree, and KFC take-out became a thing due to brilliant marketing by that company.
Second, "jingle bell" in Japanese is ジングルベル, which is only two voice markers (゙ ) away from シングルヘル or "single hell."
Which is how you get this song lamenting being single at Christmastime. Not in an angry incel way, just in the "frustrated to have romance shoved in my face when I'm unattached" way, accompanied by an acute awareness that the whole thing is a wild misappropriation of another culture's religious holiday. There is a whole sequence punning seinaru yoru ("holy night") with a homonym that means "get naked night." It's all very funny if you understand Japanese.
He concludes it with a reference to an actual Japanese custom from this time of the year, the hatsumoude, or first shrine visit of the year - though it should be noted that this tradition only became truly widespread during the Meiji era as part of the promotion of Shinto as the state religion of Japan.
[Edit: delayed because of car problems that sucked up all my time yesterday]
