Six Days in New Orleans: Five

After breakfast at the Deja Vu Bar and Grill we took a ride on the paddlewheel steamboat the Creole Queen to the nearby town of Chalmette to visit the site of the Battle of New Orleans, where many of my ancestors and relatives fought against the British with Andrew Jackson in 1815. Among the tens of thousands of people who risked their lives to stay home, fear of abandoning their animals was a primary reason for that decision. But even after the levees broke and thousands of men, women, and children were stranded on their rooftops, sometimes for days, rescuers did not allow the displaced to bring their pets into emergency facilities. Some residents had to be forced at gunpoint to leave their companions behind.

"There is a class issue involved here," Karen Dawn, an animal advocate, wrote in The Washington Post. "While Marriott hotels welcomed the pets of Katrina evacuees as ‘part of the family,’ people who had to rely on the Red Cross for shelter were forced to abandon that part of the family or attempt to ride out the storm. It cannot be denied that many poor people are dead as a result of 'no pets' policies."

"There’s no question that the pit bulls were separated out and treated differently [during the rescue effort]," a woman named Molly Gibb, who traveled to the Gulf to help lost pets after the hurricane, told me. "The media has done a very good job of 'de-dogging' the pit bull." Gibb would later foster a shy red-and-white pit bull that had been found tied to her dead owner, who had drowned. When the dog was picked up, she was wearing a fancy leather dress collar with metal studs on it, something Gibb recognized must have cost a good amount of money. "That man gave his life to save his dog," Gibb said, her voice trembling, "and other rescuers were complaining about what kind of collar she had on." (Later, the dog would be adopted by a pastor who took her to church with him on Sundays. He named her Faith.)

the "aid" the US sent is 9 years expired food MREs that they can't cook because they don't have enough clean drinking water to make it edible. It's expired, by at least nine years. They stopped including the Tabasco sauces in MREs in 2015.

How are Gazans meant to make these? You need water to rehydrate the food. If they get food poisoning from eating nearly a decade old food, what do you think will happen to them? To the people who have been starving for months and are impoverished and malnourished? Who don't have the water and nutrients you need to heal yourself from sickness? And to top it all off, the food is Haram. They sent mostly pork and other haram meals. And halal MREs exist. They knew that most Gazans are Muslim and chose to not send the halal food. it's disgusting, it's horrid. The US and all of its leaders are evil and vile

I highly recommend watching Beast of the Southern Wild if you want to keep repeating ‘Well why don’t they just leave?’ for every worsening hurricane season until the massive natural disasters due to climate destruction finally reach where you live. So then you can maybe learn to recognize that there never will be and never has been a ‘just do’ anything for everyone, even people in your own community.

It’s a real damn shame the US’s “help” to Mexico right now is focused on the safety of “US citizens” when Mexico’s actual literal military offered to help the US after Katrina and they showed up in force for us. a true shame indeed
