Happy 18th anniversary to KARA 🎉🎈💖

Known for their catchy music, synchronized choreography, and infectious charm, KARA became one of the most influential second-generation K-pop girl groups. Their name, KARA, is derived from the Greek word "chara," meaning "joy," reflecting their goal of spreading happiness through music.

KARA debuted on March 29, 2007, with the album The First Bloooooming, initially consisting of four members: Gyuri, Seungyeon, Sunghee, and Nicole. Their early sound leaned toward an R&B-influenced style, with tracks like Break It showcasing a mature, confident concept. However, the album did not gain much commercial success, and in 2008, Sunghee left the group due to academic reasons.

To revamp their image, they added two new members: Hara and Jiyoung, shifting KARA into a five-member lineup. They adopted a brighter, cuter concept, which resonated with fans. Their 2008 single Rock U introduced this new image, followed by Pretty Girl, which gained significant attention. The group's true breakthrough came in 2009 with Honey, their first song to win a music show award.

That same year, KARA released Mister, which became iconic for its famous "butt dance" choreography. The song gained massive popularity in South Korea and later helped them break into the Japanese market.

KARA quickly rose to fame in Japan, becoming one of the first K-pop girl groups to achieve major success there. Their Japanese debut album, Girl's Talk (2010), was a commercial hit, selling over 100,000 copies. They became known as part of the "Hallyu Wave" in Japan, alongside groups like Girls' Generation.

Their following albums, Super Girl (2011) and Fantastic Girls (2013), cemented their status as one of Japan’s top K-pop acts. They also held successful concert tours, including a performance at the Tokyo Dome, a rare achievement for a K-pop group.

In 2014, Nicole and Jiyoung left the group to pursue solo careers. They held a reality show, KARA Project, to find a new member, ultimately adding Youngji to the lineup. They continued as a four-member group, releasing the mini-album Day & Night with the title track Mamma Mia, which performed well both in Korea and Japan.

In early 2016, Gyuri, Seungyeon, and Hara left DSP Media, leading to the group's hiatus. Youngji remained with the company as a solo artist.

In 2022, to celebrate their 15th anniversary, KARA reunited as a five-member group (Gyuri, Seungyeon, Nicole, Jiyoung, and Youngji) and released the album MOVE AGAIN. The comeback was well-received, proving their lasting influence on K-pop.

KARA remains one of the most iconic girl groups of the second generation, known for their catchy songs, synchronized choreography, and significant contributions to the global expansion of K-pop.

ooh I am really intrigued about that young royals trailer! are there a lot of differences from the subtitles to what they are actually saying? I have seen a few people say something similar but haven't seen anything written out.

File this under "Things I didn't know I needed: Explaining all the subtle differences between what's being said in Swedish in the Young Royals Season 3 trailer, and what the subtitles say."

It's similar, but there are just some small changes that give a different *vibe*, you know?

For example in the opening scene, what Simon literally says is "Hur har du drömt att det ska vara?", a.k.a. "How have you dreamed it should be?" It's not a super common way of phrasing it in Swedish either, so I'd probably go with, "In your dream, what did you think/hope it would/should be like?"

When Wille says "Jag vill bara att vi ska kunna ha ett privatliv" (lit. "I just want for us to be able to have a private life"), to me, there's a slight difference between "privatliv" (privacy in one's personal life) and "ett privat liv" (a private life). I'd go with, "I just want us to be able to have some privacy in our personal lives."

And then there are the small filler words, which I know are left out of subs, always. But they add nuance!

When the blonde girl says "Vem skriver du med, då?" (lit. "Who are you writing with, then?"), it's more like, "So, who are you texting?"

And then Felice answers "Wille kommer tillbaks idag, ba(ra)" (lit. "Wille comes back today, just/only"), which is more like, "It's just that Wille is coming back today". Both "ba" and "tillbaks" are informal versions of "bara" and "tillbaka", which adds to the *shrug, no big deal* vibe.

And then the blonde answers, "Vadå, det är ju en så stor grej ju!" (lit. "What, that is such a big thing!"). But! There's no way of translating "ju" – it's a filler word that means "as you/we already know/are aware of". It's not even grammatically correct to add it twice, but it happens in speech when you REALLY want to emphasize the "girl, what are you talking about, we KNOW this" part. I'd translate it as "What? But that's huge!" The "ju" comes back when the blonde woman says, "Jag vet ju att det är lite spänt mellan dig och August" (lit. "I know (as we both do) that it's a bit tense between you and August").

Then we jump to a very long sentence that I understand they had to shorten – Wille saying, "Om du tror att jag kommer låta dig ta över så kan du glömma det!" (Lit. "If you think that I will let you take over, so can you forget it" – this isn't a question, Swedish word order in subordinate clauses is just very different from English). If we had enough space, I'd go with "If you think I'm going to let you take over, you can forget about it!"

Then it's just super small differences. Simon says, "Vad är det som du tycker är så bra med monarkin?" ("What is it that you think is so good with the monarchy?"); the principal (I think) says, "Hela skolans framtid hänger på den här utredningen" ("The whole school's future hangs on this investigation"); the blonde woman says "Hillerska kan tvingas stänga, med omedelbar verkan" ("Hillerska might be forced to close down, effective immediately"); and Wille says, "Vad händer om jag inte vill det?" (lit. "What happens if I don't want that?")

Then I've only just realized Swedes tend to start sentences with "but", which sometimes is more like a filler word, to "soften" the sentence. For example, the queen says "Men vi kan inte ha såna här skandaler mer!" ("But we can't have these types of scandals anymore"). (That is followed by her saying, "Så ska du kunna ta över efter mig", ("So you should be able to take over after me") which is a subordinate clause, which means there was something that came before/after that wasn't included in the trailer.) And Simon says "Men jag försöker att alltid finnas där för honom, men vad jag än gör så, ah, så blir det fel" ("But I always try to be there for him, but whatever I do, then, yeah, then it turns out wrong").

And then there's the "Hur kommer man över sin bästa vän?" ("How do you get over your best friend?") In Swedish, we use "man" (lit. "man") instead of "you", so it's more like a less formal way of saying "How does one get over one's best friend?" – I'd still translate it as "you", though.

August swears! "Jag har saknat dig så jävla mycket att det gör ont." ("I've missed you so fucking much that it hurts!") Swearing in general is a lot more okay in Swedish society, than in for example England or the US, based on my own experiences – it's done at all levels of society, by everyone (especially kids/teenagers, even in school), except for maybe at work or in very formal situations.

Simon says "Kan vi inte ba skita i allt som har hänt?" ("Can't we just ignore everything that's happened?") "Skita i" literally means "to shit in", is pretty informal and could be translated with "to not give a shit about", "to ignore" or "to skip", depending on the circumstances. Wiktionary claims it's vulgar, but I'd use it with family and friends, no problem.

So yeah! There's just more life in the actual dialogue, I think :) And I know that that's always the case, and that the translator doing the subs has limited space and time, and they need to make it work in English without adding explanations, etc., etc. So overall, I think they've done a good job – but I'm still glad I speak Swedish :)

Kravitz släpper nytt album och sin första dubbel-LP någonsin Blue Electric Light den 15 mars.

Idag återvänder Lenny Kravitz med en helt ny singel och NSFW-musikvideo med titeln "TK421”. Videon är regisserad av den hyllade videoregissören Tanu Muino. Venus vs. Mars(?) amidst the fire of Summertime Shabbos. There is tremendous public enthusiasm i’m noticing from within the communities about Barbie this year, something that hasn’t been possible for a long time in light of the imbedded nature of exploitation and eros-as-product. Now the public discourse is changed, and a new pseudo-innocence is possible, that of a knowledge that does not disrupt. The Leo mythology is rather scant within Hellenism, the Lion itself understood as Solar King and yet completely unfamiliar in Greece, where they had none. From Babylon and Egypt, again, come the insight-association of Leo-the-Season (late July, early August) with the Lion. Again: the King but the absence of mythology implies the Omnipresence of the narrative in ur-antiquity. I need to assume that the Egyptian metamyth parrallels the Babylonian, in that at least: The Babylonian Lion at the gate of Ishtar is what Ishtar rides, parralleling the Left Eye of Ra that emerges with hostility against mankind in the form of the cruel firey goddess Sekhmet who comes with the judgement of the Left Eye to destroy all the people UNTIL she’s sated with beer dressed as blood, dyed with ochre, and then becomes Ra’s other eye, the nice one, happy dancing erotic cow goddess Hathor                                                                   The house of Hor(us)  Another Venus, split between joyful rewarding fecund and punishing, vicious burning, and I suspect, this is precisely the Lion depicted in Leo: ultimately accommodating, as is the Venus/Aphrodite/Lilith nature. This brings us back to Barbie, The Bar of Bee rather than the House of Hur, the dreamhouse vessel that reflects aspirational capacity. Years ago, noted mystic artist, farmer, editor and publisher Jorian Polis Schutz released a wonderful book of Illustrated Greek Myths as devotional psychological/spiritual exploration. Amidst this he wrote about Aphrodite, relating her to the Barbie concept, as accomodating and devoted product producer of the plastic fantasy that makes ideation possible, spirituality itself:

KARA has released "Hello" ahead of their upcoming comeback with "I Do I Do" on the 24th.

You will of course remember "Hello" was Hara's b-side from "Midnight Queen," her final Japanese single album, with the MV for "Hello" itself being released after her passing.

As it turns out, "Hello" was actually a KARA song that was scrapped out of "Full Bloom," and now, the girls have released a complete version with all six members' voices.

Russia ramps up production of Shahed drones, decoys at Tatarstan plant, CNN reports

Russia has significantly increased the production of Shahed-136 drones and cheaper decoy drones at the Yelabuga drone factory in the Alabuga Special Economic Zone in Tatarstan, CNN reported on Dec. 27.This facility, located over 1,300 kilometers from the Ukraine border, plays a critical role in Moscow’s drone manufacturing strategy.In 2023, the factory produced 2,738 Shahed-136-type drones, given the name Geran in Russia, with output more than doubling to 5,760 units in the first nine months of 2024. The facility also began serial production of “Gerbera” decoy drones, which mimic the radar signature of real Shaheds but are made from plywood and foam plastic.Russia plans to produce 10,000 Gerberas by the end of 2024, twice the number of Geran drones.
