Northanger Abbey Readthrough, Ch 3
❤️❤️HENRY TILNEY HAS ARRIVED!❤️❤️
The master of the ceremonies, Mr. King, who introduces Henry Tilney and Catherine Morland is one of the two real people mentioned as characters in Austen's novels (the other being Humphrey Repton in Mansfield Park, a real famous landscaper). Mr. King was retired by the time of publication.
I love Henry's description:
He seemed to be about four or five and twenty, was rather tall, had a pleasing countenance, a very intelligent and lively eye, and, if not quite handsome, was very near it. His address was good, and Catherine felt herself in high luck.
Ah, he is well matched with "almost pretty" Catherine Morland.
Henry Tilney is a lot like a male Elizabeth Bennet, "there was an archness and pleasantry in his manner" and "there was a mixture of sweetness and archness in her manner" (Pride & Prejudice, Ch 10) sound very similar. We also have the descriptions of their eyes being intelligent.
Now because I believe in Henry Tilney Supremacy, let me point out that Henry went to a ball where he didn't know anyone and instead of making everyone else uncomfortable (DARCY!) or just not going and doing his business (Knightley), he uses of the Master of Ceremonies to get a partner and then is just delightful. Darcy begins with insulting Elizabeth and Henry begins by being utterly charming. Just the best guy.
He starts with a hilarious bit, and while Catherine isn't sure if she's allowed to laugh, she's clearly enjoying herself. Then Tilney offers two opposing things for her to write in her journal:
Friday, went to the Lower Rooms; wore my sprigged muslin robe with blue trimmings—plain black shoes—appeared to much advantage; but was strangely harassed by a queer, half-witted man, who would make me dance with him, and distressed me by his nonsense.
or
I danced with a very agreeable young man, introduced by Mr. King; had a great deal of conversation with him—seems a most extraordinary genius—hope I may know more of him. That, madam, is what I wish you to say.
Clearly the second passage is what Catherine would actually write, though maybe not that Tilney was an extraordinary genius. She is having a very good time.
Then they discuss if women or men write better letters. Catherine is unsure that women are superior, and after some gentle teasing Henry basically agrees and says this lovely progressive opinion:
"I should no more lay it down as a general rule that women write better letters than men, than that they sing better duets, or draw better landscapes. In every power, of which taste is the foundation, excellence is pretty fairly divided between the sexes."
And then we get to Henry's most famous attribute, he understands muslins!
Catherine is a bit confused by Henry's behaviour, but she does like it (and him). However, we again have some Elizabeth Bennet vibes with this observation, "Mr. Tilney was polite enough to seem interested in what she said; and she kept him on the subject of muslins till the dancing recommenced. Catherine feared, as she listened to their discourse, that he indulged himself a little too much with the foibles of others"
There are many who think Catherine is too unintelligent to be paired with Henry Tilney, but he clearly has more respect for her than Mrs. Allen, who we are told has, "a trifling turn of mind". She is catching more of his jokes than her chaperone.
She has detected a flaw in Mr. Tilney! (This will apparently be very much forgotten later). Catherine also tells something of a lie, but then is immediately honest about it:
Catherine coloured, and said, “I was not thinking of anything.” “That is artful and deep, to be sure; but I had rather be told at once that you will not tell me.” “Well then, I will not.”
The narrator then points out that it is very bad for a heroine to think fondly of a man before he is known to love her. This is a reference to a ridiculous letter in The Rambler, where it is written: That a young lady should be in love, and the love of the young gentleman undeclared, is an heterodoxy which prudence, and even policy, must not allow. It's pretty nuts, read the whole thing if you are curious.
And we see proof of Mr. Allen's sensibleness, he quickly inquire into Mr. Tilney and finds him to be from a good family and a clergyman. Catherine is being well cared for!

bbc ghosts sexual/romantic/gender orientation headcanons because i think about them way too much
spoilers none of them are straight
thomas - bi. this isn't up for debate as a bi person and thomas thorne enjoyer this is real actually. his intense rivalry with byron????? that time he was trying to wake up mike by prodding his .. uh .. region when he was asleep in the burglary episode???? and the ICONIC line "most of my dreams are about women!!" he even dresses like a bisexual with the curly hair and little waistcoat (i know he dresses like a georgian romantic poet. my only consensus is that all georgian romantic poets were bisexual which checks out actually) he would like using he/they idk but he still identifies as cis
the captain - gay. yeah this one's canon idk what to say. man kisser. he draws little pictures of havers in his army notebook. he/him cis
pat - either omnisexual or maybe comphet gay not sure actually. i do think he did genuinely love carol but whether he was forcing himself to feel that way because of heteronormativity is up for debate. cap loves him either way (i love my dead queer autistic dads) he/him cis
kitty - comphet lesbian. this is also very real. she constantly talks about men and dating but it comes across as super performative to me. lolly adefope being a huge ally also makes me kinda go. yeah. she loves women. her and thomas bi and lesbian besties. she/her cis
mary - comphet aro lesbian her and annie were dating (annie is also a lesbian) she's a little silly i miss her so much UGH. her canon crush in mike was just heteronormativity to me tbh. she/her cis
julian - bi. the only queer tory to ever exist. robin is his husband and we stan a toxic bisexual. also the scene with mike in the burglary ep again ... Yeah. he/him cis but he would say MY PRONOUNS ARE UK just to annoy everyone
robin - unlabelled he just loves everyone. this goes for gender identity as well he just doesn't care. be like robin! any/all pronouns and genderfluid
humphrey - i actually don't know but he's definitely queer in some way just look at his hair. he/him cis
fanny - comphet lesbian COMPHET LESBIANNNNN the internalised rant she goes on in the s2 finale about queer people like fanny i know what you are .... she's just scared to admit it because of george. i believe in lesbian grandma passing her gay wisdom on to lesbian granddaughter (kitty) supremacy. she/her cis
bonus: alison (she/her) and mike (he/him) are cishet but they're huge allies and would probably set up a big pride parade at button house if one of the ghosts asked. love that for them
i am so normal. sorry i made almost of all them cis i'm cis so i can't really think of many headcanons on the gender identity side. i have seen people hc cap as trans tho so that's pretty neat. thank you for reading my rambles

Jean Harlow: Do you have a garden? If so, what kind of plants do you have?
Humphrey Bogart: Do you travel a lot? Where have you been?
Myrna Loy: Do you like going to parties?
Spencer Tracy: What time do you wake up?
Jean: My garden is shared, and predates me (no, not that way.) The largest trees are over 40 years old; an Agonis Flexuosa and Pōhutukawa dominate the north and south sides of the house, respectively, both are in excess of 15 meters tall. In the backyard, an equally freakishly large variegated Pittosporum continues to challenge them for supremacy. A flowering eucalyptus grows on our nature strip, and together with the Agonis, and a teetering Virgilia, make seasonal threats against our overhead powerline. Closer to the ground, I have made attempts to introduce more Australian plants despite the reputation of our local soil being complete trash (spoiler: it is, our suburban block was quite literally built on a historic landfill.) The survivors, to date, include Callistemon, several varieties of Correa and Leptospermum (honorable mention to the coastal teatree* to which I have a not insignificant emotional attachment that will no doubt end in bitter disappointment), Kangaroo Paw (they’re alive but screaming for help), Banksia (alive but refusing to thrive), Eucalyptus ‘Baby Blue’ (he’s adopted), Thryptomene, Hardenbergia, and Acacia. Plants that have been here for longer than I’ve been alive include Fuschias, Pelargoniums, and an ocean self-seeding Cinerarias. My father planted a Diosma in the early 90’s that he has dotingly hedged ever since, it’s now as tall as I am, but I remember jumping over it with my sister when it, and we, were much, much smaller. Back then, we also had an enormous cherry plum tree growing on our eastern boundary – shading our driveway, and the neighbours’. Summer would arrive, the fruit would fall, and with every passing car a chorus of popping plums would foreshadow the looming familial task of scraping half-fermented plum slurry off the concrete. On the upside, our local blackbirds were very happy, and so were the Hydrangeas growing in the shade of the plum tree. And because you didn’t ask for an essay, I’ll make a list of the rest: Roses (17 at last count); Buddleja; Elderflower, Convulvulus ‘Silver Bush; Salvia; Borage; Violets; Statice, Jasmine; Rosemary; Sunflowers; Gladioli; Petunia; Viola; Jade, Zygo Cactus, Catmint, Seaside Daisy, a dream of red Poppies (waiting to discover if the seeds are still viable), Grape Hyacinth, Foxglove, Snowdrops, and Bluebells (despite my best efforts at wholesale murder.) Humphrey: Not a lot. Internationally, I’ve been to Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and England - first in 2005 (there was a brief weekend in Paris, as well), and then again in 2015. In 2010 I visited New Mexico. It was my first time traveling alone, abroad, to meet and stay with people I’d met on the internet. Accordingly, I have a vivid recollection of my sister giving me instruction on how to brutally incapacitate someone as I was packing to leave for the city to catch my plane. While my friend will tell you she still has the bruise, I can at least attest that she wasn’t trying to take me to a second location when I gave it to her… affectionately – but you know this story already. Locally, I’ve been to South Australia, New South Wales, and the Northern Territory… but in the grand scheme, I’ve seen very little of Australia. Living where I do, in a little damp corner of Victoria, the rest of the country intimidates me like the promise of third-degree burns. Myrna: Categorically get away from me if people are coming that I don’t know. I can enjoy myself, or I can make small talk with strangers… I can’t do both. Smaller scale, close friends/family is fine… but anything too peopled and I’m liable to be person-not-appearing-at-this-soiree. Spencer: Any random-ass time between 1 and 4am, and ostensibly for no reason.
*the coastal tea tree's final form. Mine is still only 8 inches tall.

Tag Game: Pick your top two favorite characters from five of your fandoms and explain why. Bonus points if the two characters have some sort of relationship (romantic, platonic, etc).
I was tagged by @talesofruby01. Thanks for the tag!
I did six fandoms, because at first I could only think of three and then I thought of six. Oh well.
Gilmore Girls - Jess Mariano and Paris Geller
Gossip Girl - Serena van der Woodsen and Jenny Humphrey (sorry Blair!)
Yellowjackets - Jackie Taylor and Shauna Sadecki née Shipman
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (TMMM) - Luke Kirby's Lenny Bruce and Astrid Weissman (sorry Imogene!)
The Vampire Diaries - Elena Gilbert and Katerina/Katherine Petrova/Peirce (Nina Dobrev supremacy!)
The Hunger Games (THG) - Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark
Tagging: @dayenurose, @stellaluna33, @strideofpride, @hydesjackiespuddinpop
Explanations on my choices under the cut! You're about to find out way too much about me via the blorbos :)
Gilmore Girls - Jess Mariano and Paris Geller
Criminally robbed of the besties bonus points I deserve...
Jess Mariano is my character of all time. I'll fight you. The highlights: Jess comes from an abusive, loveless family situation and is a bit prickly from the ordeal (both to himself and others), but is just such a goodhearted and hardworking person that he gets out the other side with both loving relationships (with himself and others) and a good, safe life that he’s built for himself. Character of all time!!! Who does it for us like Jess Mariano?
Paris is incredibly ambitious and a little bit of a bitch (in a cool, sexy way), and therefore I love her. Also, your honor she’s a repressed lesbian. These things happen. And I will never get over how quickly she comes to understand Marxist theory when working her first job. She was never a snob; she literally was just never exposed to anything outside the upper-class.
My man Jess would have helped her with that and it would have been amazing. And he would have been comfortable living in that scary apartment with her (and Doyle) and Rory.
Gossip Girl - Serena van der Woodsen and Jenny Humphrey
When I have to shorthand my self, I say "I'm a Serena van der Woodsen type". The only reason I relate more to her than Jess in terms of self is because Serena and I shared the incredible lows of teenage girldom (plus we’re both exceptionally beautiful). Also, Jess never did drugs (cigarettes count, but they don't, also I don't think they were really a habit). Good for him! Don't do drugs! Serena definitely did drugs, and she started them (and boys, who don’t love her but sure do think she’s pretty!) very young. The incredible lows of teenage girldom... and how they stick to you into womanhood... She tries so hard to “change” when really she needs to change her situation, but that’s the struggle... How do you leave everyone and everything you’ve ever loved? And even if you could, is there really anywhere on earth you can escape the incredible lows of girldom/womanhood?
Which brings me to Jenny Humphrey. I’m not even gonna start on the incredible lows of teenage girldom because just watch the show, my poor girl... ANYWAY! Did I mention that I love seeing ambition in girls and women? She’s the living embodiment of going after what you want, *and she’s earned it*. She becomes Queen, not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES, and it was only sort of on purpose once!! And do not get me started on her high school fashion career. It kills me that her family wasn’t more supportive, but I know she’ll be successful because literally no one and nothing could ever stop her. And, I know this one is probably a hot take, but I honestly think she’s a really good person. She fights against the corrupting force of the UES better than most, and she is a really sweet and earnest person when she feels safe enough to just be herself.
Yellowjackets - Jackie Taylor and Shauna Sadecki née Shipman
Bonus points: They're in love! (Yes, present tense.)
Talking about teenage girldom and how it sticks to you into womanhood... I could write essays, but I'll just say this. Jackie is my favorite. She's most of us (I say assuming my experiences are universal). She is the metaphor for what happens when you devote yourself to the role assigned at teenage girlhood (it makes you repressed, i.e. the death of the self).
Shauna is a metaphor for all the fight it takes to survive teenage girldom into womanhood, and how it's a never-ending fight (she's the friend/lover, she's the mother/daughter, she's the hater/butcher/killer).
Teenage girldom is traumatic experience and it colors your adulthood, and that's the show, but also these two characters are the clearest metaphors on that main theme. Everything is a metaphor!!! Also, they're both sides of the repressed sapphic romantic-friendship. Hard relate, my girls!
TMMM - Luke Kirby's Lenny Bruce and Astrid Weissman
Some of you may be asking, Why not Midge? Why not Susie? Well, this is my list and I do what I want.
Luke Kirby's Lenny Bruce needs no explanation. He is the dream man. He's earnest and exceptionally romantic, and there's something about him you can't help find admirable to the point of inspirational. Maybe it's that he's brave and honest. Maybe it's that he's ambitious in that way that's hard to be as a woman. Maybe he's just really charming, because he's that for sure. But, of course, he's a mess too. Who isn't?
Astrid Weissman! She's so so so funny. She's not trying to be funny. She's not making jokes. She's just delightful! Also, all of us out there swimming in cultures that are not those in-which we were raised. Astrid Weissman has got you with her over-correcting, overcompensating, and just sheer enthusiasm. You go, Astrid!
The Vampire Diaries - Elena Gilbert and Katerina/Katherine Petrova/Peirce
Bonus points: They're related/doppelgangers!
UGH! If they aren’t the dichotomy of self, idk what is!!!
Elena is *such* a good person. She is literally the martyr she is such a good person. She loves and she will die for that love. That’s Elena. But it’s all about circumstances. Elena is an orphan (she had a beautiful, loving family before they died) suffering from survivor’s guilt, and she’s mostly keeping herself together with her love for her loved ones. If she isn’t living for them, she’s just gonna disappear.
Now, Katerina/Katherine, she’s got kind of the opposite thing going on. She had her newborn baby she loved very much ripped from her arms before being disowned by her family and banished from her hometown. She has no one who loves her and no one to love. She holds herself together with love of self or she’s just gonna disappear. And that she does. She is a ruthless pragmatist, because she has to be to survive. Because the world is harsh and cruel (and frankly really sexist), but she’s clever and strong, and she survives. That’s what she does. Elena dies for you. Katerina/Katherine survives despite you. Everything is a metaphor!!! My favorite thing about Katerina/Katherine is that she doesn’t *just* survive. No, she *loves* life. She’ll literally be being held captive by a vampire who has been hunting her relentlessly for hundreds of years, and she’ll take a moment alone in the house to drink and dance, because what’s a spare moment if it’s not being lived? Life is not just about survival.
THG - Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark
Bonus points: They're basically soulmates!
Here's the thing. Katniss is a survivor/pragmatist with zero social skills, but an endless and earnest pit of love and enough passion to literally fuel a revolution.
Peeta is a child abuse victim who has learned to wield social manipulation (the charm offensive! plus literally lying!), but hasn't met an honest expression of emotion in his life (until he figures he's about to die so he might as well tell Katniss she's pretty) and doesn't know how to receive love.
They literally just fit each other. Peeta is charming when Katniss literally cannot. Katniss helps him survive when he's literally dying in a river camouflaged in mud and plants. But most importantly, Peeta teaches Katniss how to live in more than just survival mode, and Katniss reaches into her deep well of love and teaches Peeta how to be loved. Everything is a metaphor, but your honor, they are the couple of all time!!!

idrc that much about having a "canon" or separating canons bc all of the other fandoms i've been in pretty much rejected canon. i'm very much a pick-and-choose person when it comes to canon, like, i'm writing fanfic, i'm going to write what i want and if its canon compliant go off ig
rapper egg humphrey exists with rebel briar exists with the narrative forced blondie to be a royal exists with apple my beloved why did you make that well your entire personality when youre scared exists with ceo snow white exists with a more loving eq exists with justine and farrah supremacy theyre my favorites and its chronic exists with darabella could be interesting actually exists with sparchess isnt it for me exists with the jabberwocky plotline exists with i don't like darling's wonderland backstory exists with
at the end of the day, their my dolls and i get to decide how to play with them
Anyway thought that I am expressing now that I've reread at least 1 EAH book. I do not understand why people use elements from the Shannon Hale books to discuss characters in the context of the show because whilst I think some aspects of the books can inform how you see the characters outside of them (e.g. minor events, comments on characters appearances, and silly things like Apple needing glasses (which is canon outside of the books anyway)) I'd say that the books diverge so far from the show (plot wise, characters are actually pretty consistent) that using elements from the books in the context of the show doesn't rly make sense. E.g. Apple almost drowning as a child because like yes that happens in the books but there is nothing to suggest that that applies to the show in any way so bringing it up when discussing Apple's motivations in the show doesn't make sense. Like in the books they also have a party after Legacy Day and instead of just having a vision in a well Raven and Apple go on a whole adventure, do you think those events also apply to the show ??? Like they're different canons and different versions of events and personally I don't think it's useful to conflate the two and tbh outside of like the mess that is FNAF I think EAH is the only fandom where I've witnessed two different canons be treated almost as one. Maybe I'm just being overly pedantic though.

I wrote a piece for work on remembrance of the new cross fire of 1981. the piece is simply an overview of what happened and a look at what the legacy of the events has been, but it made me think about my own relationship with the story and how it has become part of a history of resistance and community where I live.
when I moved to new cross 7 years ago I was on the cusp of adulthood and had never really known what it meant to have a community, having grown up an liminal state. I had moved around a lot, in a multinational family which had no ties to any one place, and the place I had spent the most time, northern england, had mostly left me feeling disassociated; more like an outsider than a part of something. I was the child of immigrants, I didn’t belong and that was often reiterated, especially as a teen when xenophobia became especially rife in the north.
then I moved to london, seeking to blend in with the multicultural cityscape. south east london is vibrant, buzzing, nothing is too strange, too ugly or too beautiful. it became very clear to me, as it does to many students, that the university was a small part of something that spread far beyond the lecture hall. new cross especially has a deep history of community values which were alien to me. I had entered into a community which was not mine but which welcomed me so naturally that it was overwhelming. it’s just part of the fabric of se london.
one story I learned from walking around was of the new cross fire of 1981, which tragically took the lives of 13 young black people. I was walking past the house on new cross road, thinking: at 18, I was standing there where 18 year-olds whose lives were cruelly cut short should be standing now; they should have been 51 years old. I  didn’t grow up in new cross but I grew up in new cross. I became an adult there. when I passed 22—the age paul ruddock, the eldest of those taken by the fire, was—I couldn’t comprehend the finiteness of their lives. it opened my eyes to a violent inequality present in our history. things that should be, aren't.
this is all just to say that the way the bereaved, the families, the ncmac and its supporters united against police negligence, media silence or distortion and white supremacy in 1981 is still rippling through time to now.
looking at what happened then and where we are now, one might draw a line from 439 new cross road, to ella kissi-debrah, to grenfell tower, and remark that it feels like so little has changed. with this collective anger and grief in mind the most appropriate way to celebrate and remember the lives lost and the many community members who fought and continue to fight for justice is to stand in solidarity, and rage, and declare that these lives do matter and their loss is of great significance to us, our community and our history. it still is, even, especially, 40 years on
— today we remember: andrew gooding, owen thompson, patricia johnson, patrick cummings, steve collins, lloyd hall, humphrey geoffrey brown, roseline henry, peter campbell, gerry paul francis, glenton powell, paul ruddock, yvonne ruddock, anthony berbeck.
