Η πρόσφατη έκδοση μιας σειράς αστυνομικών με έντονο πολιτικό και κοινωνικό χαρακτήρα από τις εκδόσεις Πόλις μάς χάρισε μια σειρά από εξαιρετικά αναγνώσματα, άξια λόγου και αναγνωρισμένης λογοτεχνικής αξίας.

Μια από αυτές τις περιπτώσεις είναι οι «Ανώνυμοι» του Ιγκ Παγκάν, του Αλγερινής καταγωγής συγγραφέα, φιλοσόφου, πολυπράγμονα και πολυτάλαντου, με βαθιά γνώση του κοινωνικοπολιτικού περίγυρου. Άνθρωποι που ορίζουν αστυνομία και υπόκοσμο, οι στενοί δεσμοί ανάμεσα στους πρώην ανακριτές, άλλοτε βασανιστές και ρατσιστές με ύποπτη ιστορία, εξακολουθούν να διαμορφώνουν το φόντο της ανώνυμης Πόλης, που φέρνει στο φως όλα τα μαύρα σημεία της Γαλλίας της δεκαετίας του ‘70.

Σε αυτή την πόλη, που παραμένει ανώνυμη, όπως ορίζει ο τίτλος, καταφθάνει ο επιθεωρητής και πρώην υπολοχαγός, βραβευμένος με το κόκκινο σιρίτι της Λεγεώνας της Τιμής, Κλοντ Σνεντέρ, για να αναλάβει τη Δίωξη του Εγκλήματος στην Ασφάλεια της περιοχής, και έρχεται αντιμέτωπος με μια σειρά από ανθρώπους που του ξυπνούν οδυνηρές αναμνήσεις − μόνο η αιματοβαμμένη από τις ανακρίσεις ταράτσα του διοικητικού κτιρίου φτάνει για να ξυπνήσει εικόνες από το παρελθόν.

Μέσα σε όλα αυτά, δεν αργεί να φτάσει η υπόθεση που θα τον βάλει για τα καλά στα βαθιά, όταν η Μπετί, κόρη του Αντρέ Οφμάν, υπαλλήλου στους σιδηροδρόμους, εξαφανίζεται και οι φόβοι του ότι μπορεί να είναι νεκρή επιβεβαιώνονται, μαζί με τις χειρότερες υποψίες για το κύκλωμα που μπορεί να κρύβεται πίσω από τη σκοτεινή αυτή υπόθεση μιας αθώας 15χρονης.

Παράλληλα με την εξέλιξη της υπόθεσης παρακολουθούμε όλο αυτό τον κόσμο των μικρών και μεγάλων παραβατών, του ρατσισμού, της διεφθαρμένης αστυνομίας, των εξωνημένων δημόσιων λειτουργών και των ύποπτων πολιτικών. Εξού και ότι η ενδεχόμενη εξιχνίαση και τιμωρία για τη δολοφονία της ανήλικης Μπετί είναι υπόθεση όχι μόνο του ακριβοδίκαιου Σνεντέρ αλλά και του ίδιου του αναγνώστη, που βλέπει όλα αυτά τα νήματα της διαφθοράς και της κοινωνικής αδικίας να αλληλοδιαπλέκονται με τον πιο ακραίο τρόπο, σε ένα απτό ιστορικό σκηνικό και σε ένα νουάρ που δεν αφήνει κανέναν αδιάφορο.

"The Johannites ascribed to Saint John the foundation of their Secret Church, and the Grand Pontiffs of the Sect assumed the title of Christos, Anointed, or Consecrated, and claimed to have succeeded one another from Saint John by an uninterrupted succession of pontifical powers. On retrouve Schneider, le flic désabusé et sans prénom de La Mort dans une voiture solitaire et de Boulevard des allongés. Fanatique de Virginia Woolf et écorché vif, hanté par la mort d'une femme, l'inspecteur principal Schneider, chef du Groupe criminel hante la ville tel un fantôme à bord de sa Lincoln Continental. Il entretient des relations compliquées avec un « Monsieur Tom », ex-avocat d'Assises et homme d'affaires pas toujours recommandable. Il doit aussi enquêter sur la tentative de meurtre qui a laissé son collègue Meunier des Stups entre la vie et la mort. Voici le grand retour d'Hugues Pagan après presque 20 ans d'absence de la scène littéraire (il a occupé activement la scène audio-visuelle pendant ce temps). Ses livres sont d'impressionnantes radiographies de la vie des flics, telles qu'on n'en a jamais lues avant lui, mais aussi des œuvres bouleversantes d'humanité. Alternant crudité et lyrisme, élégance classique et gouaille de la rue, son écriture virtuose et sa musique bluesy s'insinuent dans les tripes du lecteur et nous parlent de l'essentiel : le tragique de la condition humaine.
