Take in the Beauty of untouched Huelgoat
Tumblr media
Nestled in the heart of Brittany, France, lies Huelgoat, a place where time seems to stand still and nature's wonders await at every turn. This picturesque town, known for its lush forests, unique rock formations, and rich history, is a must-visit destination for you if you are seeking an escape from bustling city life and a deep connection with the natural world. The best time to visit Huelgoat is during the spring and summer months, when the flora is in full bloom. So, put on your explorer's hat, and let's explore the Huelgoat France tourism attractions!
The Porop Arboretum: A Botanical Paradise
Among many attractions, the Poerop Arboretum huelgoat france stands out as a serene oasis, showcasing the region's diverse flora. Located on the outskirts of the village, this arboretum is a botanical wonderland that showcases the rich diversity of plants and trees found in the region. With over 2,000 species of plants from around the world, it offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty of nature. The best times to visit here are during the spring and summer, when everything is lush and green. You can simply reach here by driving if you have a car, or take a train and a short bus ride if you prefer public transportation. As you explore the arboretum, you'll encounter towering oak trees, colorful rhododendrons, and delicate ferns. The carefully curated collections allow you to travel the globe through the world of plants, from North American maples to Asian bamboo groves.
Charming Lake
Nestled within the idyllic village of Huelgoat in Brittany, France, lies the serene Lac d'Huelgoat, a natural gem that adds to the enchanting allure of this picturesque region. This tranquil lake, surrounded by lush greenery and ancient trees, is a haven of serenity and natural beauty. You can stroll along its shores, taking in the crisp, fresh air and the soothing sound of gentle ripples. For those inclined to explore further, there are well-marked hiking trails that wind their way around the lake. These paths offer both leisurely walks and more challenging hikes, making them accessible to visitors of all fitness levels. Birdwatchers will delight in the avian diversity that calls the lake home, adding an auditory layer to the visual splendor. The Lac d'Huelgoat is not just a place for quiet contemplation; it's also a popular spot for picnics.
Not to miss Delicacies
One cannot visit Huelgoat without indulging in the delectable seafood offerings. Being close to the coast, the village is renowned for its seafood delicacies. Whether it's succulent oysters, plump mussels, or perfectly grilled fish, the flavors of the ocean find their way onto your plate. Huelgoat is equally famous for its crepes, a beloved French specialty. Locally, these thin, delicious pancakes come with various fillings, from the classic ham and cheese to sweet options like Nutella or fresh berries. Pair your crepes with a glass of crisp Brittany cider for a truly authentic dining experience. For those with a sweet tooth, Huelgoat offers delightful pastries and desserts. Be sure to try the "kouign-amann," a buttery, caramelized pastry that is a specialty of Brittany.
Historic Sites
One of the hidden gems here is the Chapelle Saint-Herbot, a peaceful chapel where people used to gather for reflection and prayers. It's a bit like stepping into a time machine, taking you back to simpler days. Another fascinating spot is the Maison des Minéraux, also known as the "House of Minerals." Here, you can explore shiny rocks and learn about how the earth's treasures have been a part of Huelgoat's story for centuries. It's like a mini-museum, making history fun and interesting.

🧀📸 Racines (Brittany, spring 2023)
Taken with a Harman reusable point and shoot camera
Ilford FP4 PLUS 125 ISO
We're still in Huelgoat. The trees were huge and some of them had a whole lot of roots showing. Some parts of the forest were too dark for the film I was using but I think it gave some of the photos a dramatic and ominous effect that I really like.

Huelgoat to Perros-Guirec
It continued to rain through the night so eventually we packed up the wet washing to move on with us. Per usual it wasn’t an early start and with everything being wet we deliberately took a bit longer.
Again we didn’t travel far today. Our first stop was at the Valley of the Saints. This wasn’t on our to do list at all but was recommended by the lovely girl at the cidrerie. We were so glad we came. It’s a bit of an homage to the priests and monks who came from Cornwall and Wales across the channel to settle in what is now known as Brittany (a nod to where they had come from). The sculptures are amazing, though frankly the number of saints is somewhat bemusing.
From there it was our usual grocery stop. We love the big supermarkets over here, you can buy pretty much anything. Today we succumbed to FOMO and now both have a Breton top. A photo will come in the next days 😆
When we set off this morning we knew a lot of the campgrounds were full so pretty much expected to end up in an Aire or at worst a car park (which didn’t bode well for the bag of wet washing). The first two campgrounds we went to pretty much confirmed that view. Luckily at the second, ridiculously over priced campground, they gave us the numbers of near by campgrounds.
We struck gold! We can’t believe we have a site right next to the beach and the beach village and can stay as long as we like. And we can stay here two nights for less than the price of one night at the aforementioned campground.
We got ourselves settled and had a very late lunch before we went to explore. I had grand notions of swimming but on putting our feet into the Atlantic I swear there are giant ice blocks floating out there because it is sooooo cold 🥶
That brings us nicely to the weather. It has been sunny all day but the constant wind is chilly. The temperature sat around 18-20 all day. In the sun it is beautiful but that wind is a killer.
We naturally stopped for a drink at the beach before heading back to Tessi for nibbles and dinner and dry washing 🎉

𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐇 𝐅𝐎𝐋𝐊𝐋𝐎𝐑𝐄: 𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐋𝐋𝐒 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐒𝐄𝐒
CDXLVII • THE MILL THAT SALTS THE SEA
The Devil one day gave a sorcerer a mill which would grind whatever was asked of it, but a Newfoundland captain stole it from him to take on his ship. Arriving offshore, he ordered it to grind salt, and the mill obeyed so well that the hold was soon filled to overflowing. Alas, the captain not knowing the magic formulas to make it stop, the ship sank and the mill continued to salt the sea more and more.
CDXLVII • THE EVIL MASK
The Devil gave Princess Dahut, the daughter of King Grallon, master of the city of Is, an evil mask, which she offered to each young man she liked and who came to join her at night, thus hidden. But the next day the mask tightened and suffocated him... a black man then took the corpse and threw it at the bottom of a precipice between Huelgoat and Poullaouen...
