Film after film: Norwegian Dream (dir. Leiv Igor Devold, 2023)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Predictable social issues intersect in this lovely film about a Polish young adult from the north-east of Poland (where I was born too), with a traumatic history of homophobic violence experience, low socio-economic status, dead father, and shitty working conditions in Norway, where he works at a fish factory. Milkowski is a sensitive and strong lead, easily capturing the situation of someone who feels the need to put on some cis-masculinity performance and yet is aware that in this new setting he may not be immediately read as "queer" (and even if he is, he's probably relatively safer anyway) but his identification is one of an easily exploited migrant. His eventual lover is a black local openly queer man who experiences various intensities of hostile treatment from everyone around. There's also the Polish mother who seems to exist only for the sake of a coming-out moment that is well-written and well-acted, but unnecessary. All this, plus the standard indie-film aesthetics, made me think of Elephant, similarly interesting and significant yet full of well-meaning clichés.

If you like Operation Hyacinth I invite you to listen to this quick episode.
If you’re like me and it’s hard for you to let go of a show/film or you simply like to rewatch things over and over again I recommend listening to my podcast. You will get a recap of what happened, you will also find out what actors have to say about the show and what goes on behind the scenes and you can hear about my favourite scenes or things I didn’t like which opens up a conversation. Maybe you'll empathise with my feelings or maybe you’ll completely disagree. Either way it would be nice to know what you think at [email protected].

Five Non-U.S. Gay Movies
Every once in awhile I like to share a list of movies that folks might not have heard of or seen. So here are a list of some queer movies made outside the U.S. that are available to stream in the U.S.
In chronological order of U.S. release:
Tumblr media
Fin de siglo (End of the Century) (2019) (written and directed by Lucio Castro) - Fin de siglo is an Argentinian film in which Ocho (Juan Barberini) travels to Barcelona and meets Javi (Ramón Pujol). At first, the film looks like it's going to be a movie in a similar vein as Andrew Haigh's "Weekend": two men meet, hook up, and end up having to contend with the fact that one of them is soon leaving. But that's not what's really going on here. Instead, time jumps backward partway through the film, and then forward again. The film ends up being about both the subjectivity of one's memory and the possibilities of imagined futures.
Tumblr media
Los fuertes (The Strong Ones) (2020) (written and directed by Omar Zúñiga Hidalgo) - Los Fuertes is a Chilean film in which the middle class Lucas (Samuel González) and working class Antonio (Antonio Altamirano) meet, fall for each other, and have to contend with the fact that one of them is soon leaving. But more than that, the film is about exploring the choices people have (and don't have) when forced to deal with bigotry. Do you leave? Do you stay? Los Fuertes examines both possibilities and refuses to pass judgement on either option.
Tumblr media
Monsoon (2020) (written and directed by Hong Khaou) - Monsoon is a British film in which Kit (Henry Golding) portrays a British Vietnamese man who goes to Vietnam for the first time since his family fled when he was a child. While there, he meets Lewis (Parker Sawyers), an American businessman who is living in Saigon. The film is about Kit exploring his sense of identity and relationship to Vietnam, as someone who had been forced to leave at such a young age.
Tumblr media
刻在你心底的名字 (Your Name Engraved Herein) (2020) (written by Yu Ning Chu and directed by Kuang-Hui Liu) - Your Name Engraved Herein is a Taiwanese movie set in 1987 about a teenager, Chang Jia-han (Edward Chen Hao-Sen) as he meets and grows close to a new student at his school, Wang Po Te (Jing-Hua Tseng). The film depicts the specificity of Taiwan at the end of martial law, with accompanying toxic masculinity and homophobia. The film also manages to depict two teens who are trying to figure out their sexuality, without ever resorting to making their sexuality a mystery for the audience. Trigger warning for a non-consensual sex scene.
Tumblr media
Hiacynt (Operation Hyacinth) (2021) (written by Marcin Ciaston and directed by Piotr Domalewski) - Operation Hyacinth is a Polish film about the police initiative of the same name, which attempted to arrest and register every gay man in Poland. The story is told through the perspective of a police officer, Robert (Tomasz Zietek) who is investigating a murder in 1985. In the course of his investigation he meets Arek (Hubert Milkowski), and begins to question his own sense of self and identity. Trigger warning for blood and physical assault.

Note
(From sideblog @whimpers-and-whumpers)
So I just finished a movie called Operation Hyacinth and while it wasn't a great movie, the love interest reminded me A Lot of Kauri. Both his looks and his... general attitude and decision making and that sort of fragile nonchalance.
Look up Hubert Milkowski specifically as Arek and uh. You'll get what I mean. I know Kauri already has a face claim but this was just too good not to share!
Ooooh, I will have to watch it! Honestly, I don't need a movie to be good, I just need it to have ~vibes~
